Courage is to feel The daily daggers of relentless strife And keep on living. *** While most families have at least some life insurance protection, statistics indicate that many could well have more than they now own. The average amount in force today would cover only approximately two years of disposable income per family.

At the beginning of this ear, the average life insurance protection per family was very low. Many experts in financial planning advise that families generally need at least enough life insurance to cover four or five years of income.

Although the nation's protective level still can be considered low in relation to needs, life insurance coverage is increasing faster than family income. The average amount of life insurance per family has more than doubled the past decade. During the same period, disposable income per family climbed.

By far the largest share of family life insurance protection is on the husband.

Many families carry at least some insurance on the wife, who makes an important economic contribution even when she does not earn income. Coverage also often includes at least moderate amounts on the children, particularly with the wider use of family plan policies. *** Tuesday evening, March 28th a three hour sales seminar was held at Lodge No. 66 in Elm Mott presided over by SFR Wiest and District III Director Sid Pokladnik assisting. A large number of sales representatives was present and Brother Wiest really had an interesting evening planned.

He went into details about our Universal Life "Flexible Protector Plan," especially, plus the other plans of insurance our SPJST offers. He ended with some very inspiritional comments about fraternalism and insurance being "hand - in - hand" and advised all sales representatives to contact our members, do them a fraternal favor and help them to update their insurance to present day levels. He ended with this appropriate remark: "If you don't contact them and advise them to update their plans, somebody else will." How true!

Yours truly really enjoyed the three hours of instructions including fraternal fellowship. *** In this week of March 26th to April 1st, our SPJST lodges, in many parts of our State of Texas, especially in East Texas, received more than their share of rain and, in many cases, flooding in excessive amounts. Texas really was in the center of the heavy rainy and stormy weather and we hope none of our members suffered very much damage of any kind, and such is ow Spring weather and it seems that the tornado season continued right througf Winter instead of lasting from April until November as usual. Spring arrived March 20th and Daylight Saving Time began Sunday, April 2nd at 2 a.m., so here we are set

for six months of Spring and Summer and our SPJST activities will increase, as usual, during this time. *** Your editor attended the funeral of Lodge No. 47, Seaton President Jerry Pechal, Wednesday, March 29th at 2 p.m. at the Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple, after having been notified by SL Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas of his death and funeral. Upon arriving at the funeral home, there was an overflowing assembly of members, friends, neighbors, etc. present and even the lobby and two lounge rooms were filled with people paying their last respects, which proved that Brother Pechal was a very valued and respected member of our SPJST Society and of the Seaton community. The service and eulogy were very appropriately delivered and consoling to the immediate surviving family.

The graveside service was brief and a final military tribute with "Taps" conducted by members of Bravo Battery, 4 - 5 ADA of The First Cavalry Division, made a very proper farewell to him.

Some members agreed that Brother Pechal was a "Big" man physically with a heart just as "big." At Lodge 47, District II and in our Society as well, he will be missed and long - remembered for all the good deeds performed. For our entire SPJST and our family, this writer extends sincere condolences and sympathy to the family and relatives. May we honor his memory with respect, now and forever. *** Three weekends in April are busy ones for our Society's members. From reports in this and last issues, we feel that District II and V had productive meetings in March, both on the same day.

Districts I and VI will have their meetings Sunday, April 9th; Districts HI and VII -- Sunday, April 16th and District IV -Sunday, April 23rd. For places and times see Bulletin Board and agendas respectively. *** From all indications the State Youth Director, District Youth Counselors, Youth Leaders, etc. had an enjoyable and productive Youth Leaders' Retreat at Camp Lone Star and our Youth Department will have a good start for the Summer School break. Keep up the good work, gang; we're supporting you all the way! *** Be sure to remember the Czech Play at Lodge No. 88, Houston, Sunday, April 16th. Having been in and even directed Czech and English plays in Houston twenty years ago, yours truly knows how much work goes into putting on a play, so, please, support this effort; you will enjoy this comedy. Seeing Jan Schroif in his comical antics is worth the price of admission, alone.

It is our wish that local and out - of - town people will fill the Chandelier Ballroom to capacity.

You have to become a whiz in the language of beer labels to know how much alcohol a brew contains. Actual alcohol content usually isn't listed. Under new rules from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms that standardize labeling terms, "low alcohol" or "reduced alcohol" beer can contain only up to 2.5 percent alcohol by volume. That's less than the 3.2 to 5 percent in regular beer, but more than people avoiding alcohol, such as pregnant women, may want. And "light" beer has about 20 percent fewer calories than regular, but may not have less alcohol.

Brews below 0.5 percent alcohol cannot be called beer at all, but rather "near beer," "malt beverage" or "cereal beverage."

They may be labeled "non - alcoholic" as well, notwithstanding the presence of alcohol. For recovering alcoholics, near beer may not be a healthy choice. The taste sometimes tempts them back to the bottle, says a doctor with the NCA. And adolescents who drink near beer also may develop a liking for the real thing.

From The President's Office' SPJST To Sponsor Fund Raising Projects For The Renovation Of The Battleship Texas And Czech Chair March - September 1989 Dear Officers and Members: The Supreme Lodge approved the proposal to help raise funds to restore and renovate the Battleship "Texas" and also at the same time to raise donations for the Czech Chair. Both projects are tax - deductible contributions.

"To establish a major new Czech Studies Program in our State, THE CZECH EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION OF TEXAS is conducting a drive to fund an Endowed Educational Chair at a major Texas University. The establishment of the chair will insure that a Czech teacher will always be available and that Czech language will always be taught."* "Since the early years of this century, the Czech youth of this state have had the opportunity to study the language and culture of their forebearers at state universities. Czech classes have served to bring generations together and foster a love and understanding of our immigrant ancestors and their values."* Battleship "Texas" is now a memorial ship owned by Texas and was called the "Flagship." Battleship "Texas" played a very important part in World War II and was used in many battles. *Reference -- Support the Czech Chair Brochure.

Battleship "Texas" has 150,000 visitors each year, but now is in critical need of major repair and must be towed into the shipyards for repair.

The complete cost of restoring the battleship is estimated to cost 13.4 million and all Texans are asked for their help in raising these funds.

Battleship "Texas" helped save our country and now we need to save her, won't you help?

We realize that while some lodges may have funds available, others may not, but they may want to solicit contributions from members or sponsor an activity to raise funds. In any case, we certainly hope that the effort you make in support of these projects will be richly rewarded in the benefits of fraternal "involvement."

Your lodge's goal amount is ten cents per member. The amount may be more or less. Each lodge that meets their goal(s) will have their lodge name in the Vestnik and what project(s) they supported. Individual contributors will also be recognized in the Vestnik.

The thermometer of progress will be in the Vestnik. Lodge donations and individual donations are encouraged.

Donation checks should be made to SPJST and mailed to the SPJST Supreme Lodge, P.O. Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503; Attention: Office of the President. After all contributions are collected one check will be distributed from the Supreme Lodge to each project. Therefore, at this time we are soliciting you and your lodge's help with these important projects.

We are asking each lodge to donate a minimum of 10 cents per member to at least one of the worthwhile projects.

If it is possible, please support both projects.

The Supreme Lodge will match each lodge's donation up to the amount of $2,500 for each project. You can be sure that we at the Supreme Lodge greatly appreciate your help.

SPJST can meet its goals only if we act on these fraternal commitments before September 1, 1989.

Let us all help keep these projects alive.

District II President D.I. Bohac called the meeting to order.

The regular monthly meeting was held on Monday, March 20th, following the social games.

President Rita V anek called the meeting to order. Kim Kacal led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed for our sick and deceased members, especially for Fred Stepan, Mary Hafernick, Clement Bacak and Gilbert F. Rod who have passed away since our last meeting.

Secretary Leona Macha called the roll of officers and all were present except 1st Vice President Bennie Reck and Trustee James Bacak.

The minutes of the previous meeting held on February 20, 1989, were read and approved.

Correspondence since the last meeting was read: A thank you note from Leona Macha for the colorful African Violet plant received during her stay at the hospital, new insurance and annuities report and letter from El Campo Association of Retarded Citizens asking for our continued support of their Fair Booth at Wharton County Fair and Exposition.

Treasurer Madeline Shimek gave the financial report. A complete report is on file.

The members heard reports from 2nd Vice President and Youth- Leader Mary Ann Karasek.

New hall rental rate schedule with rental contract required as proposed to members by Trustees was accepted by members.

A motion by Floyd Shimek, seconded by Frankie Vanek to contribute $100 to El Campo Association of Retarded Citizens, motion carried.

Lodge 66, Waco Honors 50 - Year Members Our Lodge 66 regular meeting was held March 19th. We had made plans to honor our six members receiving their 50 - year pins. We were very happy when four of the six showed up.

"VIRGIN IN THE CASTLE" Illahol Dramatic Club of SPJST Lodge Pokrok No. 88 will be presenting a hilarious Czech comedy, "A v torn zamku byla panna" (Virgin in the Castle), Sunday, April 16, 1989 at 2 p.m. at the SPJST Lodge No. 88, 1435 Beall Street, Houston.

A very talented cast made up of Czech speaking Texans and native Czechoslovakians will be entertaining you. The actors and actresses are voluntarily giving their time and energy to make this play possible. "Virgin in the Castle" is a delightful, funny, Czech comedy, with a stage setting including a dungeon and a castle which has seen better days, the titled nobility of the castle still try to pretend they are living in the wealthy by - gone days, and the others thinking they still have their wealth try to latch on, when, in reality, no one has anything.

The lodge will be serving a delicious dinner and pastries. Tickets are $2.50 with children under 12 years admitted free.

There were twenty - five members present.

Sympathy cards were sent to Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Weadoch, Mrs. Claude Chaney and family, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Hawk and Dorothy Massey. Get well cards were sent to Juanita Ramm, Acnia Hughes and Sharon Hutka.

Rosa Lea Weadoch is doing well and Acnia Hughes suffered a broken arm and was missed at the meeting.

Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernie Gebala and Jim Wiest were our guests.

Trustees' report was that Mary Ann Summers and Bill Hutka were absent.

We hope you all had a nice Easter.

The Good Lord was with us, yesterday. It looked grim for a few minutes, but then it turned out to be a beautiful day for our annual Lodge 154 and Sokol Picnic. We had a large turnout. Everyone was in a happy mood and all had a wonderful time.

We were honored to have guests from Czechoslovakia, New Zealand and Dallas.

It was really a special treat for the 5 cyclists, their trainer and mechanic, who are here from Czechoslovakia touring Texas and other states for the Cycle Race.

They won third place in Fort Worth. We had a big supper for them and guests at the hall Tuesday night and they were so excited to be around Czech people. The first time they were able to speak to anyone.

Brother Jerry Milan and family entertained them with a supper and Czech videos in their home Friday night, and several of us were there also and they felt so at home.

Brother Tal Milan took them shopping Saturday afternoon and Sunday they picked them up for the picnic. We thank Sister Millie Wruble, since she speaks good Czech and gave them the itinerary we had planned for them and that was the first Czech conversation they heard and felt so relieved. Otto Kurtz, after hearing they were here, went over and visited them and then took them out. They will have a lot to talk about when they get home, and they could not believe the Fort Worth hospitality. We hope they have a safe trip on their return home.

A reminder of the District III meeting, Sunday, April 16th that will be hosted by Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood.

We extend our get well wishes to Sister Leslie Poindexter who had knee surgery, Brother Lad Maly who just had eye surgery and to Sister Anna Juran of Lodge 92 who is in St. Joseph's Hospital; to all, get well soon.

Sister Mary Renfro was missed by all at the picnic. She had a bad few days with a bad case of bronchitis, and I'm glad to report she is feeling better today.

My brother Emil (Dugan) Chorich is very ill in St. Louis, so I am leaving to go up and see him.

The winners at the picnic are: (Young Children) -- 1st - Melanie Mason, 2nd Tressie Jean Sanders, 3rd - Craig Galloway, 4th - Amy Gallaway.

(Juniors) -- 1st - Kory Pace, 2nd - David Alvarado, 3rd - Blaine Mason, 4th - John Pace. The golden goose egg was found by Ky Cleveland.

The egg toss (ages 12 and under) were won by Ky Cleveland and David Alvarado at a 40 - foot distance.

The women's team winners were Julie and Lisa Hopkins at 60 feet.

Men's team winners were David and Danny Suges at 100 feet.

Men and women team were Tal Milan and Leslie Poindexter at 100 feet.

Then the big beer hunt of 140 cans -- 1st place - Rome Milan, 2nd - Talon Milan, 3rd - Joey Milan It looked as if the Sokols were able to get up in the trees faster.

We extend a special thanks to Brother Roy and Sister Lydia Alholm for having us.

Everyone cannot wait for the occasion next year. There was plenty of room for all the horseshoe and baseball games and fun was had by all.

I will miss our next meeting on Sunday, April 9th, but I'll see you when I get back.

News From Lodge Rozkvet No. 172, Pasadena Dear Members: The monthly meeting of Lodge No. 172 on March 22nd was well attended.

The main highlight of the meeting was the formation of a Youth Club for our Lodge No. 172. We have a youth leader, Sister Robin Zucha, and our lodge intends to support her in any way to make the youth club a success.

We were fortunate in having State Youth Director Claudette Reese in attendance and to assist our lodge in organizing the Youth Club.

We have approximately seven fine youth members in our lodge who would be eligible for membership in the Youth Club and they will be contacted shortly to form and meet at our lodge. We hope every effort is made by the youth to start our club.

When our lodge building was constructed in 1981, one of the rooms was designated a youth room but due to the lack of a Youth Club was turned into a storage room. Now with the formation of the Youth Club, that room will be a youth room again.

The masonary work has been completed for our new driveway canopy and, shortly, we will install lighting in the ceiling. Also, we hope to construct two large planter boxes over the masonary base of the canopy. With the addition of shrubbing, planted with the assistance of Brother Louis Hanus, the District V director, our lodge home is beginning to look like a lodge and not just a building.

In the March meeting, the lodge made donations to the Boy Scouts of America and to the Supreme Lodge for the restoration of the Battleship Texas and the Czech Chair. We also have set up a box for used eye glasses to be donated to the Lighthouse For The Blind. Those members who wear eye glasses I am sure have several pair of used glasses that cannot be worn and we urge you to bring these to the lodge and leave them in this box -- a very good cause.

All benevolent deeds and donations are under the supervision of Brother Irving Theiss who is the 1st vice president and fraternal activities coordinator of Lodge 172.

The officers of Lodge 172 want to thank all members who assisted in making the District V meeting at our lodge on March 12th a success. We had a very good turnout and it seemed as though everyone enjoyed themselves. We are looking forward to the fall meeting to be held at Lodge No. 88 in September.

After our March meeting, everyone gathered in the ballroom to help celebrate and enjoy refreshments on the 39th birthday of our able president, Brother Alvin Sefcik. We are very proud of this dedicated SPJST member.

Members of Lodge 172, don't forget our dinner and dance social on April 16th; this is FREE to all dues-paying members and for anyone else, the charge is $6. Dear Members and Friends: The Ladies' Circle of Lodge 92 met on March 14, 1989. The meeting was called to order at 10:30 a.m. by President Betty Billington.

As I See It

By W.J. "Bill" Malina In our modern society we tend to shy away from words that end in 'ISM.' We do not want to be identified with concepts that are usually associated with words such as communism, socialism, racism, fundamentalism, liberalism, etc. We conveniently substitute other words or phrases for them in order to avoid using them.

Even patriotism, one of the reasons that our country is so successful in world affairs, has, in the minds of many, become tainted by the refusal of a relatively small number of citizens to serve in military service when our country was involved in what they considered unnecessary conflicts.

In the pursuit of the fulfillment of our personal goals and ambitions we tend to put fraternalism, the fundamental 'ISM' of our SPJST, into a remote corner of our lives. Perhaps, in these modern times, we do not really understand or comprehend the concepts and principles of fraternalism. Fraternalism inculcates all of the concepts reflected in the words found on the front page of each issue of the Vestnik -- Benevolence, Humanity and Brotherhood. When our great nation was born, our founding fathers embodied the principles of the brotherhood of all citizens into the constitution. Our country has extended its right hand of fellowship to the oppressed people of many nations, including our Czech Moravian forefathers, and took them into the brotherhood of our citizenry.

It is unfortunate that membership and interest in many fraternal organizations are declining. This indicates that people are losing interest in the concept of fraternalism, the practice of which urgently needs to be kept alive. The officers of our Supreme Lodge have placed renewed emphasis upon fraternal activities. The last State Convention saw fit to elevate the function of the Chairman of the Fraternal Activities Committee to the level of a lodge officer. Hardly an issue of the Vestnik is published without our editor, Brother Sefcik, making some comment about the importance of renewing our spirit of fraternalism.

These efforts are not a mere show of words to establish public opinion about our programs and activities, they are a realization that we MUST PRACTICE what we preach.

It occurs to me that we get so wrapped up in our own personal projects and activities that we do not see the whole, as the old saying goes, "We can't see the forest for the trees."

I do not intend, in any way, to diminish the importance of the work of those who perform deeds of benevolence, those who sell our insurance and annuity programs or those who oversee and participate in our social activities which generate funds for our lodges to operate on, but fraternalism extends beyond that.

Fraternalism is the life blood and spirit of the SPJST. The practice of the concept of brotherhood (fraternalism, if you will) must take precedence over all of our activities. We often lose sight of the fact that our insurance and annuity programs are a part of our fraternal activities. The only reason they exist is because they are the fruit and harvest of the seeds of the fraternal concept and benevolent concerns which the founders of the

It is a cold hard fact that if we stop practicing brotherhood and charity, our fraternalism will turn into commercialism. We cannot let this happen. When the spirit of fraternalism begins to take precedence over all of our activities, our Order will grow and continue to prosper.

Fraternalism will be, as our founders intended, the motivating force behind all of our activities. As a result, our insurance, investment and social programs will take on a new vigor and vitality. A renewed spirit of fraternalism within our organization will become a strong defense against the commercial interests who persist upon attacking our policies and programs. We must get back to basics, it's as simple as that!

Youth Leaders' Retreat "The Best Little Retreat In Texas" 1989

Camp Lone Star in La Grange was the site for the 1989 Youth Leaders' Retreat. The weekend was jam-packed with new games, dances, crafts, ideas and enthusiast.

Friday night started off with leaders playing Win, Lose or Draw while DYCs met for their spring meeting. A night scavenger hunt was followed by a sing - a - long around the fire conducted by songbird Ruth Hanusch.

A get - acquainted skit with new leaders (who by the way claim that they do not have an Aunt Sally) was performed followed by a closing ceremony and the singing of the SPJST song.

Saturday morning brought flag raising and a game that helped to acquaint everyone. President Leshikar welcomed and thanked everyone for taking time out from their busy schedules to be present.

The rule book changes were reviewed and new ideas for the youth program for 1989 were shared. All leaders who were unable to attend this year's retreat will receive all changes and new materials via this month's meeting suggestions.

This year's special guest speaker was Scott Gross. Scott stressed the importance of leaders of today's youth. He emphasized that we are

The dining hall was colorfully decorated with kites, balloons and streamers. A special ceremony, "The Whole Person" was conducted by DYCs Patsy Koslovsky, Susan Bohnenberger, Marie Stayton, Anita Roye and Maxine Pavliska honoring Frank Klinkovsky for his 17 years as District II DYC and for his dedication to the SPJST Youth Program. Our hats go off to Colonel Klink!!!

Square Dance Instructor Joel Wilson had everyone dancing the night away learning new dances to bring toour youth. Youth Leader Donna Vanecek of Lodge 29, Taylor, danced the night away while over 50 pairs of eyes watched over her hoping that we wouldn't be having an extra pair of feet joining us at any second. (Donna is 81/2 months pregnant!) I am happy to say that this writer saw Donna at the District II meeting last Sunday (March 12th) and she was still with child.

The evening ended with a mini Tarok and Domino Tournament. The winner in the Taroks was Tim Vanecek, the winners of the Dominoes were Louise and Richard Burney.

Dear Vestnik Readers, During the weekend of March 10 - 12, I' was fortunate to be able to attend the annual Youth Leaders' Retreat at Camp Lone Star in La Grange.

My sincere thanks to everyone for making this weekend possible. The organizing and planning of all events of the weekend showed through by everyone leaving with much more knowledge and motivation than they began the weekend with.

The new games, crafts, dances, song, etc., that we learned will be so valuable to us in our working with our youth at camp and throughout the year.

Discussions were held on various rule book changes with all changes being explained, discussed and understood.

It was, however, disappointing to know that one change had not taken place involving a scholarship being awarded to the State King and Queen. We are living in a growing society now where education is so very important -- but the costs are sky rocketing. What better way to show our youth our appreciation for their meeting their responsibilities as State King and Queen for the year than rewarding them with a scholarship to better themselves. I have myself experienced the pride and enthusiasm shown by them as they represent our SPJST Society at various functions throughout the year. I do hope the decision will be reconsidered.

Other items of interest were discussed throughout the retreat weekend.

An SPJST goal that the majority would like to see become a reality is our SPJST Recreation Center. The idea of having a facility for the use by the many functions and facets of our society seems so worthwhile. Our senior members would have a safe place at which to spend time.

Annual State events such as Domino Tournaments, Taroky Tournaments, Youth Leaders' Retreat, Officers' Workshops and Camp could take place at such a recreation center. This recreation center would truly be an asset to our society.

I, again, thank all who made the Youth Leaders' Retreat weekend possible. It was educational, rewarding and will be instrumental in my working with our youth in the upcoming months.

The youth (our future) are an important part of us always. I feel privileged and enjoyment by being a part of watching them grow and better themselves through a society's opportunities such as ours.

Mr. Bartek was born to Joe and Mary Bartek in Marak, Texas. He married Annie Salac on January 19, 1937. He owned and operated a welding and blacksmith shop in Zabcikville for 30 years. He later worked on metal craft and wood art for 10 years.

He had served on the Rogers School Board for several years and was a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 24 in Cyclone. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cyclone.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.

Mr. Bartek is survived by his wife, Annie Bartek of Zabcikville; one son, Charles Bartek of Fort Worth; one daughter, Diann Bartek of San Antonio; five sisters, Toni.

Zucha of Cyclone, Annie Doskocil of Zabcikville, Janie Jecmenek of Temple, Bessie Kleypas of Marlin and Wilma Younts of Cyclone; two grandchildren and two step grandchildren.

Ag-Exchange Program Sends Krpec To Australia

By John McMillan Chris Krpec of Hillje is high on the "down under" continent.

The 19 - year - old likes the visitors from Australia he has met, not to mention the kangaroos and koala bears he hasn't.

Krpec said he first spoke with an Australian his freshman year at Louise High School while representing his FFA chapter at a cattle show. "From the experiences I've had with them, they're all nice people and they seem to enjoy life," he said.

Since about age 10, Krpec said, he's always wanted to visit Australia. "I always found it interesting -- their habitat down there and their different species of wildlife," he said.

So when John Carleston, the agricultural science teacher at Louise High, asked Krpec last November if he wanted to visit Australia, the reaction was immediate and enthusiastic. "Can I pack my bags and meet you Thursday?" Krprec recalls saying.

The trip, as it turns out, begins the first week in April. Krpec will travel to Australia as a participant in the

International Agricultural Exchange Association and plans to work on a cattle ranch in Northeastern Australia until October.

He is the first graduate of Louise High to participate in the program, whose international headquarters is in Copenhagen. The 18 - country exchange program is limited to single people from ages 19 to 28. "It'll be a wonderful education for him," Carleston said. "I think he'll learn a lot dealing with a foreign country."

Krpec, an agribusiness major at Wharton County Junior College, said he hopes the visit to Australia will help him to better understand the economies and agricultural techniques of other parts of the world.

From what he's heard, he said, Australians have modern agricultural equipment, but. "not as up - to - date as ours." As for Australian cattle, "They have mostly the same types of cattle we have," Krpec said. "They've been buying cattle from the United States for some time."

Krpec said he does not know how cattle are raised in Australia, aside from the fact that the Australians "run them in large quantities and on large quantities of acreage." He said he spoke with an Australian woman living in the Palacios area as part of the exchange program, and she said the ranches in her country are often much bigger than the ones in the United States. The Australians refer to ranches as "cattle stations," he said.

Krpec said he hopes that during his visit he can make use of his expertise at artificial insemination techniques for cattle. He learned the techniques at a program in Brenham sponsored by the American Breeder Service.

Krpec said the fartherest he has previously traveled was to the states bordering Texas. The trip will require a 36 - hour plane flight. The round trip ticket cost him and his family $2,795, which he financed partly by selling some cattle he's raised.

He's expected to bring another $2,000 for expenses in Australia and Krpec said he will also receive earnings for his farm work.

Rosalie Krpec, Chris' mother, said her son has "very big dreams in general, but is willing to work to make them happen."

"It's clear across the world, it seems like, but I think it's a very good experience." Rosalie Krpec said.

"He's really looking forward to it, and I think he's going to make the best of it."

Chris Krpec said he has never lived away from his parents for more than two weeks. "I'm sure I'll miss my family and friends, but I don't believe that it will effect me enough that I'll want to come home," he said.

There's even a possibility, he said, that he'll want to become an Aussie.

"If it seems like there could be a profitable economy down there, I'd think about it pretty seriously," Krpec said.

But he said his first trip to Australia will be limited to seven months, and he probably will settle in Wharton County. He plans to obtain an agricultural business degree from Texas A&M University, he said, and pursue a career in agribusiness, possibly owning a cattle ranch someday.

Chris was a member of Lodge No. 30, Taiton since 1969 and an active member of the Youth Club there after the age of 6.

Currently, he is a member of Lodge No. 40, El Campo - Hillje (a scholarship receiver from that lbdge in 1987.)

Chris was chosen best all - around by teachers and classmates his senior year at Louise High School and that year also received the U.S. Army Reserve Award for academic and athletic achievement.

He is also a member of the National Santa Gertrudis Cattle Association and a First Degree Knights of Columbus Council No. 9394.

University Of Texas At Austin Department Of Music Dear Friends of Czech Culture: It gives me great pleasure to inform you of an event in our neighboring State of Louisiana that will surely be of interest to members of your organization. The University of New Orleans, in collaboration with myself and other Czech music enthusiasts nationwide, will host an International Music Festival and Musicological Conference in 1991 to celebrate the 150th birthday of the Czech Composer Antonin Dvorak. The dates are scheduled for Thursday through Monday, February 14 - 20, which will be immediately following Mardi Gras in 1991. The Festival and Conference will bring musical scholars, performers, and fans of Czech music from around the world to what will surely be one of the greatest celebrations of Czech music ever to take place in our country.

It is well known that Dvorak was one of the first composers to secure for Czech music a place of honor alongside the revered traditions of Mozart and Beethoven. In so doing, he helped bring to Czech culture the worldwide respect which it so richly deserves. But Dvorak also made important contributions to the development of music in America. He served for three years as Director of the National Conservatory in New York, during which time he visited parts of the American Midwest as well, and he composed some of his most beloved music under the direct influence of the American musical environment. Such works as the "New World" Symphony and the "American" String Quartet were, in fact, the result of a conscious effort on his part to incorporate American musical styles into the traditional European forms, and to provide an example for young American composers seeking to establish their country's musical identity.

The Dvorak Festival and Conference in New Orleans will emphasize the melding of Czech and American cultures which Dvorak's music embodies, and in so doing will celebrate that very combination of cultural influences which your own organization so admirably represents.

The Festival will consist of a week of musical performances by nationally renowned artists, featuring familiar works by Dvorak along with many musical gems, both by Dvorak and by his American associates, which one rarely has the opportunity to hear.

Undoubtedly, the highlight will be a performance by Indiana University Opera Theater, considered the best university opera company in the United States, of one of Dvorak's unjustly - neglected operatic masterpieces. Indiana is currently in the process of deciding among three works: DIMITRIJ, which has never before been staged in the United States, THE JACOBIN, performed in this country only once previously, and

12/VESTNiK—Wednesday, April 5, 1989 THE DEVIL AND KATE, performed here just twice before. This event will be of major national significance . and will surely be an uncommon treat for all lovers of Czech music.

Also prominent in the Festival will be three different full - length programs by the New Orleans Symphony. The first will feature neglected orchestral masterworks by Dvorak. The second will offer one of Dvorak's rarely - heard major choral works (to be performed at the lovely St. Louis Cathedral on Jackson Square in the French Quarter). The Third will include the "New World" Symphony along with works by American composers whom Dvorak inspired.

The acclaimed Emerson String Quartet together with pianist Menahem Pressler will perform an evening of Dvorak chamber music. In yet another concert, the fabulous base - baritone Simon Estes will sing songs

by Dvorak along with traditional Negro spirituals, highlighting the influence which folk music of Black Americans had on the Czech composer.

In addition to the major performances in the evenings, several daytime concerts and informal presentations will be given, along with scholarly papers by music historians from around the world. There will be a special exhibit of art from Dvorak's milieu, along with special book and record displays. We are also looking into the possibility of inviting a folk ensemble from Czechoslovakia to perform at the Festival.

Almost all of the Festival events will take place within walking distance of the center of New Orleans' historic and charming French Quarter, with special accommodations to be arranged at a number of the French Quarter's quaint hotels.

In hosting the Festival, the University of New Orleans is taking on a formidable task. As Czech -- Texans we applaud their tremendous initiative in propagating a cause as precious to us as Czech music in America. We can help them in two ways: 1) By expressing a tentative interest in attending the festivities. The University of New Orleans needs to be able to demonstrate to prospective backers that the event will draw participants from outside its immediate area. It views the large number of culturally - sophisticated Czechs living in the neighboring State of Texas as an important potential audience and would be most gratified to have this perception confirmed by letters from organizations such as yours. Perhaps your members have been wanting to witness the spectacular New Orleans Mardi Gras in person, but for one reason or another, you have never gotten around to it. Your organization may want to charter transportation so that you celebrate both the Mardi Gras and the Dvorak Festival together with your friends in 1991.

2) By direct financial support. A most pressing need is to raise funds tc pay the expense of bringing Indiana University Opera Theater to New Orleans. If we can do this, then Indiana will pay for the costs of the production, which will be presented as part of the regular opera season at the IU Campus, as well as in New Orleans.

Our share will be only the costs of transportation and accommodations for personnel and equipment, but this will come to over $65,000 above and beyond projected ticket receipts.

Indiana has requested a definite commitment from New Orleans by September 1st of this year since they

will be deciding on their 1990 - 91 season at that time and would probably not include the Dvorak opera without the knowledge that they would bring it to New Orleans. This means that pledges of support must be obtained very soon. The University of New Orleans will gratefully acknowledge, in printed programs for the event, any contributions received, and will mention major donors in its publicity material as well.

Ethnic Town JIeeting In La Grange-April 8th The Institute of Texas - German Studies at the University of Houston is sponsoring the first "ethnic town meeting" in Central Texas on Saturday, April 8th in La Grange. The meeting will focus on the past and present nature of the Texas Germans, the relationship between the Texas Czechs and the Texas Germans who live in that region and the impact of progress on both of these ethnic groups.

The free public meeting will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the La Grange City Hall, 155 East Colorado.

The meeting will begin with kolache and coffee. Participants may also purchase tickets at the meeting for a catered barbecue lunch.

The meeting will be moderated by Dr. Theodore Gish, chairman, Department of German at the University of Houston and Director of the Institute of Tex -as - German Studies at the UH. —SPJST-

Items Of Interest Few words unravel parents like, "Your child is very ill." Naturally, you want the best medical care for your offspring. For minor illnesses and injuries, the family pediatrician or perhaps one of the new for - profit, walk - in clinics will usually do. But if the situation requires hospitalization, things can get tricky. Children -- being smaller and more fragile than adults -have different needs for drugs, surgery, anesthesia and other medical services. So if your youngster needs a hospital, the choice should be one with expertise in caring for kids.

There are more than 150 children's hospitals nationwide. Most are private, non - profit facilities that specialize in treating only the most difficult medical problems affecting kids, such as serious injuries or complicated heart conditions. Among the best, in the opinion of many specialists, are those in Boston, Los Angeles and Houston. For less serious ailments, a good general hospital with a strong pediatric department will probably be fine. Look for a teaching facility. Such hospitals usually have the newest diagnostic equipment and medical - surgical teams with the best training and experience. As a rule, they charge no more than most private hospitals. You can get recommendations from your doctor -who will need to provide a referral for admission anyway. Or check the "AHA Guide 1987, American Hospital Association Guide to the Health Care Field," which lists all hospitals and their specialties. It's found in most libraries.

Hospitalization is a big step, and it wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion.

If your child has a major illness, there may be a national organization you can call -- the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, for example. If there's no chapter, local check the

"Encyclopedia of Associations," published by Gale Research Company and found in most libraries. Ask which medical institutions are receiving the group's research funds. They're likely to know the most about the disease.

You can also seek suggestions from the chief of pediatrics at a nearby medical school. If the school's hospital can't handle the child's problem, officials there can point you in the right direction. For puzzling health problems that local doctors have been unable to resolve, you might ask your doctor to contact the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. It's one of the most comprehensive biomedical - research centers in the world. If the illness is the subject of an NIH research project, a patient may be accepted for treatment at no charge. But your child's personal doctor has to get in touch with the NIH. Accidents, of course, don't give you the luxury of careful contemplation -you need to know beforehand what to do. Whether you can move the child yourself or must call an ambulance, you have the final say on where the child is taken. Since the training of -ambulance attendants varies widely, you can't always rely on them for advice. In general, a nearby walk - in clinic is fine for minor cuts andfractures. It can even provide preliminary first - aid for more serious injuries. But such clinics aren't equipped to do much more then stop bleeding, set bones and write prescriptions. Also, many walk - in clinics aren't open at night or on weekends. For major injuries, particularly during off - hours, you need a hospital emergency room, but not all of them are prepared to treat the worst traumas. Under guidelines of the American College of Surgeons, there are three levels of trauma centers. The most comprehensive is Level I, which should be equipped to handle all contingencies. Your doctor should have an opinion about the emergency rooms he or she thinks are best.
