THE FOLLOWING ISSUE IS THURSDAY.

CSA [Czechoslovak Society of America] the oldest fraternal Society in the United States was establishedin St. Louis, Missouri by several Czech gentlemen,March 4, 1854. (Thisis the parent organization of our SPJST and the WFLA.) That same year (1854), Dr. Leos Janacek, a Czech composer of six operas was born and, in July, 1854, the Republican Party was formed in Michigan.

From 1854, the fraternal spirit has blossomedand grown and in January, 1989, National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) President Lindell fittingly wrote the following: A Messagefrom NFCA President Edward A. Lindell Greetingsto all for 1989!

Fraternalists in America stand at a crucialjunction this year. I urge all of us to be sensitiveto the political arena and our need to be united and steadfast.

In the past few months as I visited various State Fraternal Congressesand met officers, Board members, Fraternalists of the Year, and State legislators, I have been impressed, even overwhelmed, by the vitality, enthusiasm and competence of our people and our organization.

Our best years are ahead because in state after state, we are activelysolving social problems that others only acknowledgeor talk about.

Pleasetell our story. Tell how we are leaders in the alleviation of hunger, suffering, and hardship. Tell how we educate; how we renovate; how we build; and how we aid the poor, the homeless, and the aged. These have been the hallmarks of American fraternalism throughout its history.

The torch has been passed to us and we need to cheerfully pass it on. This couldbe our finest year ever if we have the necessary determination and commitment!

Instead of being kind, the tendency today is to be clever. Of course, the word "clever" has various connotations. Certain beasts of prey are spoken of as being especially clever; such as the coyote and the wolverine. An ingenious toy, tool, gadget.or trap may be said to be clever.

The quick response, the witty reply are alsosaid to be clever. Clever,however, is a word of but limited praise. Thus if you wanted to compliment a lawyer, rather than telling him he had been cleveryou would use such expressions as resourceful, skillful or astute.

It should be noted that one of the definitions for 'clever' given by Webster is "intelligent, quick, ingenious, and resourceful, but lacking in depth, soundness, wisdom, or morality.'' A cleverlawyermay wellbe a tricky one, even as tricks are the stock in trade of the clever magician.

Cleverness also often manifests itself by what is called, in modern American idiom, "wisecracks" or smart remarks.

Because of this, clevernessis often given an unfavorable connotation. As Rudyard Kipling once asked; "It's clever, but is it art?" Also, another English writer years ago counseled youngladies: "Be a good, sweetmaid, and let who will be clever" Thus it has alsobeen observed that time and again a "clever mist of words" servesto hide the lack of knowledgeon the part of a speaker or writer.

Jealousy is the mark of the poor loser: It is the defense mechanism we hide behind to avoid facing up to the fact that we have lost. Jealousy is essentially thwarted pride. Never be jealous of a person who moves ahead.

He or she had what it takes. They generallydeserveit and probably have sacrificed a great deal to accomplish a step forward. Remember -·- for every step up, you must give up something.

Climb slowly and surely with grim determination and success will be yours.

SPJST To Sponsor Fund Raising Projects For The Renovation Of The Battleship Texas And Czech Chair March - September

Dear Officers and Members: The Supreme Lodge approved the proposal to help raise funds to restore and renovate the Battleship "Texas" and also at the same time to raise donations for the Czech Chair. Both projects are tax - deductible contributions.

"To establish a major new Czech Studies Program in our State, THE CZECH EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION OF TEXAS is conducting a drive to fund an Endowed Educational Chair at a major Texas University. The establishment of the chair will insure that a Czech teacher will always be available and that Czech language will always be taught."* "Since the early years of this century, the Czech youth of this state have had the opportunity to study the language and culture of their forebearers at state universities. Czech classes have served to bring generations together and foster a love and understanding of our immigrant ancestors and their values."* Battleship "Texas" is now a memorial ship owned by Texas and was called the "Flagship." Battleship "Texas" played a very important part in World War II and was used in many battles. *Reference -- Support the Czech Chair Brochure.

Battleship "Texas" has 150,000 visitors each year, but now is in critical need of major repair and must be towed into the shipyards for repair.

The complete cost of restoring the battleship is estimated to cost 13.4 million and all Texans are asked for their help in raising these funds.

Battleship "Texas" helped save our country and now we need to save her, won't you help?

We are hoping to reach our goals for

these projects by September 1, 1989.

We realize that while some lodges may have funds available, others may not, but they may want to solicit contributions from members or sponsor an activity to raise funds. In any case, we certainly hope that the effort you make in support of these projects will be richly rewarded in the benefits of fraternal "involvement."

Your lodge's goal amount is ten cents per member. The amount may be more or less. Each lodge that meets their goal(s) will have their lodge name in the Vestnik and what project(s) they supported. Individual contributors will also be recognized in the Vestnik.

The thermometer of progress will be in the Vestnik. Lodge donations and individual donations are encouraged.

Donation checks should be made to SPJST and mailed to the SPJST Supreme Lodge, P.O. Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503; Attention: Office of the President. After all contributions are collected one check will be distributed from the Supreme Lodge to each project. Therefore, at this time we are soliciting you and your lodge's help with these important projects.

We are asking each lodge to donate a minimum of 10 cents per member to at least one of the worthwhile projects.

If it is possible, please support both projects.

The Supreme Lodge will match each lodge's donation up to the amount of $2,500 for each project. You can be sure that we at the Supreme Lodge greatly appreciate your help.

SPJST can meet its goals only if we act on these fraternal commitments before September 1, 1989.

Let us all help keep these projects alive.

District III SPJST Minutes Of The SPJST District III Meeting Held October 30, 1988 At Lodge No. 25, Ennis The October 30, 1988 fall meeting of the SPJST District III was held at Lodge No. 25, Ennis, Brother Johnnie J. Gaidusek, Sr., president, presided.

The meeting convened at 11:00 a.m.

Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and SPJST Motto were led by Flag Bearer Larry Yates.

Welcome to the membership was by Brother James Whitfill, president of Lodge No. 25.

The response was by 1st Vice President Mydell Grochoske.

Minutes of the spring meeting were approved by the membership as published in the Vestnik.

Second Vice President Emma Ceska conducted the tribute to our departed members.

The Supreme Lodge report was given by Brother Sidney Kacir, SPJST Legal Advisor. Brother Kacir expressed his pleasure for the opportunity to visit with the members of District III and extended greetings from the other officers of the Supreme Lodge. Brother Kacir then complimented our Society for the democratic and member - oriented way it conducts its affairs. He stated that one of the most constructive things the Society is doing is its efforts to educate its members through scholarships and other programs it sponsors. He urged the membership to visit the Supreme Lodge office and to tour the library and museum.

Wednesday, March 22, 1989—VESTNIK/5 District III Director Sid Pokladnik reported on the convention, its accomplishments and items to be addressed in the future convention. He recognized the sales representatives for the fine work they are doing for the Order. Brother Pokladnik recognized the sales representatives from District III who are in the Top 25 in Sales; those were Kay Kovar (Lodge 25, Ennis), Johnnie Krizan (Lodge 6, Cottonwood), Emil Petr (Lodge 84, Dallas), Ernest Haskovec (Lodge 25, Ennis) and Norma Alford (Lodge 84, Dallas).

Brother Pokladnik spoke on the importance of the lodge system and the fraternal work done by the lodges. He congratulated the youth from District III who won the scholarships from the Supreme Lodge. He commented on the method used in selecting the winners.

Brother Pokladnik stressed the importance of the district and lodge fraternal activities coordinator. He reported on the progress on the family recreation center. Brother Sid reported the total assets of the SPJST being 58 million dollars an increase of 9.75 million. In the Top Ten Lodges in the State, District III has five, namely: Lodge 66, Waco; Lodge 84, Dallas; Lodge 154, Fort Worth; Lodge 25, Ennis and Lodge 92, Fort Worth.

District III Rest Homes Director Sid Pokladnik reported on the rest homes.

He stated the homes are still financially sound in spite of $175,000.00 spent in repairs and upgrading. Brother Pokladnik stated 15 members of the SPJST are guests at the two rest homes.

President Gaidusek called on Brother Larry Laznovsky for a report from the Finance Committee. Brother Laznovsky stated he didn't have much to report since he was just elected at the 1988 Convention. He thanked the delegates for their confidence in electing him to the committee. He, credited Arnold Vrla for the fine work on the committee in previous years.

Brother Ben Jarma, chairman of the Insurance Committee, stated he had no report and he thanked the delegates for his re - election.

District III By - Laws Committeeman Jerry Milan of Lodge 154 reported the new By - law Books have been printed and the books should have been mailed to the local lodge secretaries. Brother Milan thanked the members for his re election.

District III Publications Committeeman Brother Albert Banik of Lodge 66, Waco, reported that the contract for printing the Vestnik was, again. awarded to the Hill County Press of Hillsboro. He stated he was happy about this because there has been a very good working relationship between this firm, the editor and Supreme Lodge; thus, no problems for the committee. Brother Banik also thanked the members for his re election.

District III Treasurer Albert Banik reported on the General Expense Fund; balance as of the spring meeting (April 17, 1988) -- $1,254.93; Income -$1,307.10; Expenses -- $205.00; Balance (October 30, 1988) -$2,357.03.

District III Youth Fund Balance (April 7, 1988) -- $2,519.12; Income -$3,398.05; Expenses -- $2,750.00; Balance (October 30, 1988) -$3,167.17 Vestnik Editor Rudy Sefcik (Lodge 54, West), spoke on regulations on publishing items on raffles, drawings and such, also the advertising on the back page of the Vestnik. Brother Sefcik then recognized Miss Agnes

Housek who, for 26 years, submitted an article every week in the Vestnik Czech Section.

The roll call of lodges revealed 148 members present representing 13 of 18 lodges in the district.

First Vice President Mydell Grochoske introduced the following visitors: Sidney Kacir and wife, Dorothy; also Sister Stacie Hejny, wife of the late Supreme Lodge Vice President Joe B. Hejny.

Unfinished business was the change to the rules and regulations proposed at the fall meeting which was approved to read: Minutes from the previous meeting will be published in the Vestnik within 30 days prior to the next meeting.

Under new business with a duly made and seconded, motion was approved to have Quilting and Horseshoe Tournaments at our spring meeting. The local lodges will receive rules and regulations in regard to these contests.

District III Youth Counselor Bessie Petr called attention to a poster on display which was prepared by the youth of Lodge 84 and won first place at the Texas Fraternal Congress. Sister Petr reported the District III Youth Club has $3,316.68 in their account; she also spoke on the cookbook sales.

The YAD was a huge success this year with numerous entries; 103 youth clubbers, chaperones and staff attended camp. Sister Petr was very happy with the number of chaperones attending and for the first time, more male then female chaperones attended camp. Sister Petr stressed the importance of starting new youth clubs in lodges that presently have none.

The Kolache Contest winners were announced by Sister Bessie Petr who was in charge. They are: 1st Place -- Georgie Pavlicek (Lodge 66) on her pecan roll; 2nd Place -- Georgie Pavlicek (Lodge 66) on her apricot kolache; 3rd Place -- Willie Mae Schuetz (Lodge 6) on her sausage roll.

We wish to thank the fine judges who judged this contest.

Appointed to the Nominating Committee were Brother Daniel Roznovsky, chairman - Lodge 183, Mid - Cities; Brother Albert Kubala Lodge 92, Fort Worth; and Brother George Pauling - Lodge 66, Waco.

Sister Rosemary Banik called attention to the new article in the By laws Book Article 45(e) in regard to electing a District Fraternal Activities Coordinator.

Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood was selected to host the spring district meeting after Brother Robert Dobecka so graciously volunteered the use of Lodge 6. Brother Dobecka said that April 16, 1989 was the only date Lodge 6 had open on their calendar.

Director Pokladnik pointed out that Article 45(p) of the By - laws states that the district must elect or appoint an Auditing Committee. Brother Pokladnik suggested that the District III president get an approval of the members to elect or appoint a committee. Motion by Rosemary Banik was made to accept the above statement, seconded by Daniel Nors.

Motion approved.

Lodge 25, Ennis volunteered to host the YAD on June 25, 1989.

The meeting was adjourned for the membership present to go to the Lodge 135 - Sokol Hall of Ennis for an SPJST Volleyball Tournament.

Our thanks to Lodge 25 in Ennis for being so gracious in hosting this very successful meeting. The food was delicious and the hospitality was great.

Dear Members: Lodge No. 13 of Dime Box held its monthly meeting February 18, 1989 at 2 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by President Ricky Ford who led the Pledge of Allegiance.

There were 11 officers present and 4 absent.

Sister Dorthey Rachel read the secretary's minutes and Debbie Kostalka read the treasury report; both were approved as read. Sister Magdeline Iselt gave the financial report.

Lodge No. 13 held a silent moment for our deceased member, Joe Marek.

We would like to thank Ricky and Doris Ford and Floyd Kostalka for going to the workshop in Seaton.

The Memorial Day Picnic will be held on May 28th. There will be a

barbecue cook - off starting Sunday morning and Kase 101 from Austin will be there from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The auction will start at that time.

There will be activities going on all day long with games, spinning wheel, dunking booth, fishpond, snow cones, popcorn, horseshoe tournament, hamburgers and sausage wraps.

If you would like to help with anything, please let us know and if you would like to donate anything to the auction, your help will be needed.

Dear Members: Lodge No. 15 regular meeting was opened by President Jo Lee Shiller leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing in silence in memory of all our deceased members. May they rest in peace.

All officers were present.

We welcomed our guests, Dan Balusek, Gene Marak and Thomas Harwell. We were happy to have you all; be sure and come, again.

"Happy Birthday" was wished to Milton Shiller and Warren Hillman who are both '39' and holding and little John Hertenberger who was one year old.

We welcome two new members, Mark and Nancy Michalka.

On the sick list were Mathilda Havlik and Anton Svetlik. We hope and pray both of you are feeling better.

Since the State "42" Tournament is being played at Buckholts, we planned the day. I hope all of you who come will have a very enjoyable day.

I want to thank Lodge No. 47 for the very good day we had at the training seminar for the Officers' Workshop. I really did learn a lot.

Thanks for all the hard work.

At the next meeting on April 12th at 7 p.m., we will start giving a cash door prize so, if you want to get in the drawing, be sure and come to the meetings! I hope to see more of you present.

Dear Readers, The March 7, 1989 meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Christy Marek.

Jeff Posvar and Bradley Marek led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Roll call was called by Secretary Melissa Holtman. There were 16 members, 3 adults and one guest, Mark Macek, present.

The minutes were read and the youth leader corrected the treasurer's report in the minutes from last month.

Treasurer Kristie Waits gave the treasurer's report and the current balance was $259.11. The treasurer also mentioned that we will be making plans for a fund - raising project.

Our Youth Leader Rose Harvell reported about the District II meeting which was held Sunday, March 12, 1989 at Round Rock Lodge No. 187.

The youth of District II gave a program to our former District II DYC Frankie Klinkovsky. The Lodge 24

Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29 held their regular monthly meeting on Sunday, March 5th at 4 p.m. with President Melvin Steger presiding.

Darrell and Derrick Melicoat presented the flag and led the members reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a few moments in silence for our deceased members, Rosie Strnad and Rosie Stern.

Roll call of officers and the minutes of our previous meeting were read.

The treasurer's report was given by Patti Rieger.

We had two applicants for membership; they are Lillian Kaspar and Hazel Edwards.

We also had a report on the Rules and Regulations Committee; they were reviewed and revised and Edwin Adamek was chairman of that report.

We also had a Salary Committee report and the members accepted the committee's recommendation.

Bobby Wuensche reported on the Tarok Tournament; he said 12 members went and Chester Simcik and Lydia Jansen won the State Tournament. In the "42" Tournament are Lillian Ocks and Dorothy Morket, 1st; Bobby and Ruth Wuensche, 2nd place.

Youth Leader Donna Vanecek reported 22 members attended their meeting and the Easter egg hunt was changed to a later date. She reported the youth leader will go to camp for retreat next week.

On Saturday, February 18, 1989, Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Lindemann celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the First United Methodist Church in Brownsville, Texas. Kermit is Karl Lindemann's brother. Karl, Lowrina and their son, Bruce, flew to Brownsville for that happy occasion, and stated they had a real good time. We wish you many more years together.

One new item concerning rental of the hall for social and other activities was discussed and adopted.

On Sunday, February 26th, lodge members and the Needville community had the opportunity to hear the Lodge No. 88 Concert Orchestra from Houston presenting a program at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home. It was good to hear this fine group of musicians playing the familiar tunes "Ze stare vlasti" (From the Old Country).

She was a member of St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, worked for Mothers Day Out at the Foundry United Methodist Church, and was "Room Mother" for the first grade at Emmott Elementary School. Peggy was a dedicated wife and mother. She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Reibenstein of 8 years; three small Lodge

Youth Leader Bessie Petr introduces Adam Faraizl to the membership at Lodge Pokrok Dallas No. 84 February meeting. She stated that Adam was cast as "Joe Boot" in the Lonesome Dove TV Series, recently.

Final plans for the March 11th lodge barbecue were made at the March 8th meeting of Danbury Lodge No. 139.

Financial Secretary Helen Filipp stated there was a good response to the invitation to the barbecue. All committees reported arrangements were progressing on schedule and the barbecue should be a big success.

Our Vice President Henry Novak is recovering nicely from his surgery and was welcomed back to the meeting. He thanked everyone for cards and visits during his stay in the hospital.

Members stood for a moment of silence in memory •of our departed member, Mary Ermis.

On Sunday, March 5th, our regular monthly meeting was called to order

by President Dennis Hermis.

There were 41 members and 6 guests who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Secretary Alice Jochen read the roll call of officers; all were present.

Then she read the minutes from our previous meeting which stood approved as read.

All other officers' reports were also given.

We welcomed one new member Charlie Mazoch. Sales Representative was Sidon Tumis who also had one increased insurance member.

Youth Club report was read by John Buri.

Sick Committee reported that Mae Schleider, Rudy Cernuch and Frank Tumis were on the sick list. We hope all of you are feeling much better at this time.

Under new business, District V spring meeting to be held at Lodge No. 172 in Pasadena on Sunday, March 12th, beginning at 12 noon. All our members are invited to attend this meeting.

President Dennis Hermis attended the Officers' Workshop which was held at Seaton Lodge No. 47 (Star Hall) on February 25, 1989. He reported this was a very informative meeting and said he learned much by being in attendance.

March birthdays observed at our lodge were Rosie Tumis (March 24th), Sidon Tumis (March 17th) and Nelson Jochen (March 12th).

Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Linhart were observing their 12th wedding anniversary on this very day of our meeting (March 5th). Congratulations to both of you, "Johnny and Kathy."

We had 2 drawings for our $100 capsule attendance prize -- Calvin Dodd and Frank Krustchinsky; sorry both were absent, so the prize went unclaimed. Next month we will draw again, twice for $100 prize. Come out and see if you might be the "Lucky One." The oldest member present prize of $5 went to Emil Valka, 76 years old.

Door prizes went to Henry Hermis, Rita Hermis, Robert Kieschnick and Marilyn Spivey.

The meeting adjourned at 2:50 p.m.

Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: Can you believe our weather; freezing and one week later in the 90s.

Due to the ice, we had to cancel our dance with Moostash Joe. A lot of people were disappointed.

Luckily all our travelers had nice weather for flying and returned home safely.

Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan, along with their son, Brother Talon Milan, were met in Naples, Florida by Henrietta's mother Sister Ann Banfi from Chicago, Illinois to attend Henrietta's One Person Show at the Park Show Gallery and did quite well. Celebrities who have purchased some of her paintings are the former "Miss USA," Miss Fitchner, Danny Ainge with the Boston Celtics and Robert Ludlum, Top Spy Thriller writer. Now she is getting ready for a show in Chicago.

Sister Julie Hopkins had a wonderful week at the Mardi Gras; Anna Johnson also flew to New Orleans after seeing her nephew being ordained a deacon in the Catholic Church in St. Louis, Missouri. She brought back beads and cups to us all from the Mardi Gras; Sherri Mason spent another week in Los Angeles, she must have some interest there; Billie Jo Mason spent a week in Vail, Colorado and then a week in Aspen, Colorado.

She loves skiing; Lisa Hopkins met with Richey Turri in New York on March 3rd and left for Switzerland and is due back March 17th. We hope they return home safely. Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta made it through the ice to attend an elegant gala given by the Women's Guild for a Cerebral Palsy Benefit in Dallas, but they spent the night in Dallas.

Sister Agnes Merlick had a wonderful visit with her daughter, Betty Mueller of Miami, Florida for 3 weeks. Betty took our cold weather back with her.

We extend our congratulations to Brother Bernard and Agnes Havran of Cortez, Colorado who just returned home after celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary for 2 weeks in California. Hope you have many more! We also extend our congratulations to Brother Danny and Lisa Suges who were wed Saturday night, March 11th in a beautiful ceremony at Birchman Baptist Church followed by a reception at the Lost Creek Country Club. (Our hall was rented that night and several of us were unable to attend.) Danny is the son of Brother Dr. Don Suges and Sister Tina and Brother Roy Cox. The parents of the bride are Patricia Britton and Medford Sumrow. They were honored to have their grandparents Adele Suges Masla of Chicago, Illinois, Brother Henry and Sister Ann Banfi of Cicero, Illinois, aunts Sister Annette Schabowski of Berwryn, Illinois, Sister Raydeen Naughton and daughter and son, Teryn and Justin from Westchester, Illinois, (they are all members of our lodge) and Phillip Suges (uncle) and Jeff Suges (cousin) from San Diego, California, and

relatives Hazel Cox and family from Lubbock, Texas. The happy couple are honeymooning in Las Vegas, Nevada and may they have a long and happy life together.

We extend our sincere sympathy to Sisters Linda Johnson on the loss of her grandmother in Minnesota, and Vera Richards of Issaguah, Washington on the loss of her father Frank Matustika in Kunovice, Czechoslovakia. May they rest in peace.

We are happy to report Brother Marvin Janca is now home and doing well. I understand he will go back and have surgery in a couple of weeks; you will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Our meeting yesterday was short and sweet, we had a very busy day. All our officers were present. Plans were made for our annual Lodge 154 and Sokol Picnic (Easter), weather permitting. The picnic will be held as in previous years at Brother Roy and Sister Lydia Alholm's, 6805 Pleasant Run Road in Colleyville. Pleasant Run has the bank on the left and Burrow's Market on the right, turn left and follow the signs. Picnic time will be from 10 a.m. until ?? Anyone needing information may call 237 - 7514, 236 2314 or 237 - 1500. There will be games and egg hunt. Each family bring a dozen colored eggs for the hunt. There will be many prizes.

Sister Mary Renfro reported on her trip, along with daughter Sister Mary Jean Stoeppelman, to meet Sister Kelly Eaton and Abbe in Oklahoma City on Thursday. Kelly flew in with 6 of her gymnasts for the American Cup Meet.

Kelly and Abbe came in for a short visit; they got in Saturday night and they got to be with us yesterday. They left for Chicago this morning.

I called our assistant youth leader, Sister Carrie Milan, this morning (our youth leader was working) who with their spouses attended the youth leader's retreat over the weekend in La Grange. She reported they were kept busy and enjoyed every minute of it.

She also said Brother Joe didn't even complain his knees hurt after dancing.

Brother Howard Leshikar spent the weekend with them. We will hear about all of it.

Sister Rose Steinman was our door prize winner.

Memorials were made in memory of Mary Picha by Ella Mae Faraizl, Jeanie Mason, Mary Pavey; in memory of Brother Judge Joe Spurlock Sr. by Jerry and Henrietta Milan, Jeanie Mason and Mary Pavey.

The quarterly meeting of Lodge No. 189 was called to order at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, 1989 at the offices of W and W Real Estate by President Ernest Wentrcek. Alfon Quitta led members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call of officers was called with all being present. The minutes of the previous meeting held in December were read and approved. The treasurer's report was given and approved.

Benevolence Committee Chairman Nina Quitta reported that a get well card had been sent to Chad Kuboviak.

Wednesday, March 22, 1989—VESTNIK/9 and John Skrabanek on the birth of their new baby boy.

Members discussed becoming more involved in fraternal activities outside the community. Larry Wentrcek suggested that the lodge participate in the Brazos County Youth Livestock Show by confirming funds to youth projects. A motion was made by Jane Junek and seconded by Mary Novosad to donate up to $300.00 to the youth projects. This motion was approved by all members present.

Larry Wentrcek was appointed as the new fraternal activities coordinator; assistants to him will be Claudia Novosad, Nina Quitta, Alfon Quitta and Jaime Wentrcek.

Members discussed the Family Recreation Area proposal. Our delegate, Cliff Junek explained that the Family Recreation Area would be a statewide recreational area for SPJST members only.

Members of the lodge then proceeded to fill out a people and financial form for the Supreme Lodge.

With no further business, President Wentrcek adjourned the meeting.

Members then enjoyed wonderful refreshments provided by Jane Junek.

Hlahol Presents Czech Comedy

Club

"Virgin in the Castle" is delightful, funny Czech comedy. With a stage setting including a dungeon and a castle that has seen better days, the titled nobility still try to pretend they are living in the wealthy by - gone days, and the others thinking they still have their wealth try to latch on when in reality no one has anything.

The cast of characters include a Count (Hrabe Ignac Pumpernickel z Nemanic); his son - Polydor; his manservant - guide - treasurer - jack of all trades -- Trumbus Fric; and a hungry husband - seeking Countess (Adelaida) von Womatschek). The other characters are perfectly cast.

There are two young women, both from Czechoslovakia. One is the virgin who escapes from her wedding ceremony because she doesn't want to marry the stuttering old nobleman.

The other is the big - mouth daughter of the manservant, who is also looking for a rich "catch." Then there is the Count's son, who is living off his father's title, and his friend, a meek, shy, music teacher who does not have the courage to profess his love.

The cast includes nine characters -seven are from Czechoslovakia -- the other two are from Czech descendants but all love the Czech language and are the happiest when they can use their talents to continue to preserve the Czech language.

No one wants to miss a play when talented, comic Jan Schroif. performs.

Jan Schroif has performed in almost every Czech play and musical over the past 30 years. We also have the very Vera Cotrino, born in talented Czechoslovakia, who has played the lead actress in several past plays and always leads the audience to ask, "Who played that part?" Then, we must not forget Karel Sicner, who played so well the part of the Baron a few years ago. He's back again as the stuttering Zimostraz -- the jilted bridegroom. Jerry Persan plays Count Ignac Pumpernickel of Nemanic (Count "Broke"). Jerry Persan has played in Czech plays in the recent past. His interpretation of Count Nemanic is one that shouldn't be

missed. It's laugh after laugh. Ted LaPesh plays the Count's son...a bumbling, comical young man. Ted has played so well in past plays, and the audience has had many laughs from his characters. There's also Helen Kubicek from Lodge 88, starring as the husband - seeking countess. Helen has given great performances and this one is no exception.

Now, in addition to these veteran actors, we have three newcomers.

Zdena Pomeroy is a very talented young woman. Her performance on stage is excellent. She plays the bride who escapes the marriage ceremony.

Her suitor, Peter Link, dramatizes his role as a bashful musician so well.

Peter is a university student and surprised the other members of the cast how well he adapted to the role.

Jannette Cotrino will play the part of Count Egon. This lovely 14 - year - old will transform into the stuck - up snob son of the Countess. She plays the part so convincingly. Our prompter is Vera Brejnikova. Mrs. Brejnikova was kind enough to volunteer her time to be the prompter. She and her husband are presently visiting their daughter and her family in Houston. We are fortunate to have the talents of Tomas Krejci as director. Tomas Krejci, also from Czechoslovakia, worked with Milos Forman in filming "Amadeus."

His professional expertise has contributed greatly to the success of this play.

"Virgin in the Castle" will be performed at the SPJST Pokrok Lodge No. 88, Houston, 1435 Beall Street, Houston on Sunday, April 16th at 2 p.m. Tickets are only $2.50 with children 12 years old admitted free.

Annual Meeting

CESAT

The Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas (CESAT) will hold its annual meeting on Saturday, April 15th at the SPJST Lodge No. 29 Hall in Taylor, Texas.

Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the meeting will get underway at 10 a.m., with adjournment planned for about 1 p.m.

All members and persons interested in the promotion of the study of Czech language and culture are urged to attend this important meeting which will also include the election of officers for the 1989 - 90 term and discussion of plans for CESAT activities and _projects this year.

Following the CESAT annual meeting, students and teachers of the Czech language will hold their annual conference sponsored by the University of Texas Czech Department. This affair beginning at 2:00 p.m. will include a program offered by UT Czech students under the direction of Woody Smith, UT Czech language instructor, also a dinner and dance later in the evening.

The CESAT meeting in the morning plus the program and activities of the UT Czech Club in the afternoon and evening will provide a day of interesting Czech cultural and promotional activities for all.

On Saturday, March 4, 1989, the Executive Committee of CESAT met at the RVOS Lodge Headquarters in Temple to plan the organization activities for the year. These include a drive to increase CESAT membership, a CESAT scholarship program to be announced soon, monitoring of Czech classes being taught throughout Texas and recognition of the teachers of these classes.

Increasing membership in CESAT will be a top priority this spring, and it is hoped that more interested persons will join CESAT to indicate their concern for the promotion and maintenance of Czech culture and the study of the Czech language in Texas.

The Czechoslovak Foreign Institute (CSUZ) is planning to hold another summer session of Czech language study at Charles University in Prague this July. Charles Heyda, coordinator of this program for the CSUZ hopes to receive full information -- cost, dates, pre - requisites, etc. very shortly. The Executive Committee of CESAT decided in this Temple meeting to provide a grant of up to $300 for needy students desiring to participate in the Czech classes at Charles University.

******** Lodge No. 30, Ta:Lion Dear Officers, Directors and Vestnik Readers, After reading the 'Editor's Comments' in the March 8th Vestnik, I have to write and commend our Editor Rudy Sefcik for always supporting our youth.

On the other hand, I was very disappointed reading in the February 15th Vestnik that the Supreme Lodge Board of Directors and Officers, with the exception of one, voted against awarding a scholarship to the State King and Queen. A lot of money is spent in different areas and activities, and I don't think it's asking too much, if, when the State King and Queen fulfill their obligations for their year of reign by attending the many functions when they take the time to show their interest and support, publicly representing the SPJST, to award them a scholarship to help with their education.

I wish to again, express my thanks to all who are behind and working for our youth and hope the Board will

Expression Of Sympathy We, the officers and members of Lodge Pokrok Jihu No. 72, Cameron express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed brother JOE BISKUP, JR., who passed away Saturday, February 25, 1989 in a Cameron nursing home at the age of 88.

Brother Biskup was born in Czechoslovakia and was a retired blacksmith. He became a member of Lodge No. 72 on March 9, 1919 at the age of 19.

Services were held Tuesday, February 28th at 10 a.m. in Marek Burns - Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron with Father Tom Chamberlain officiating. Burial was in St. Monica Cemetery, Cameron, Texas.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple, on behalf of the officers and entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of JOAN HARDING, who passed away Sunday, February 26, 1989, in her home at 2405 Marland Wood Drive, Temple, at the age of 61 years.

Mrs. Harding was born in Canyon, Texas to A.B. and Zola Caldwell Pinnell. She attended West Texas State University and was a graduate of Powers Modeling School in New York.

She married Otis Harding on November 15, 1948. She lived in Grand Prairie before moving to Temple in 1971. She had been chairperson of the March of Dimes Golf Tournament for three years. She was an avid golfer and was a member of Mill Creek Country Club and Wildflower Country Club. She was past president of Women's Golf Association. She was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters. She served as secretary for St. Vincent de Paul Society for more then ten years. She was active in Red Cross at Grand Prairie. She was corporate secretary for Harding Motors.

Services for Joan Harding were held at 3 p.m. Monday, February 27th in St. Luke's Catholic Church of Temple with the Reverend Oliver Johnson, Monsignor John Driscoll and the Reverend Walter Matus officiating.

Burial was in Bellwood Memorial Park. Sheffield Funeral Home of Temple was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Otis Harding of Temple; a son, Steve Harding of Temple; a daughter, Cindy Snodgrass of Temple; her mother, Zola Pinnell of Grand Prairie; a brother, Ben Pinnell of Dallas; a sister, Lou Innis of Mesilla, New Mexico and six grandchildren.

Memorials are to be made to cancer research at Scott and White Memorial Hospital or the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Temple.

Mrs. Harding was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple.

Mr. Massey was born in Mart, Texas to the late Robert Bell and Mary K. Lynch Massey. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and married Dorothy Dicks in 1948. He worked in the maintenance department of the Professional Building and for the Temple Independent School District prior to retirement.

Survivors include a son, Cecil Massey, Jr. of Temple; a daughter,

Bettye Hawke of Temple and two grandchildren.

Mr. Reagan was born in Temple. He was a graduate of Temple High School and Temple Junior College. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He graduated from the University of Texas Law School. He was assistant district attorney for Bell County for 15 years. He was recently elected judge of the 146th District Court. He was a member of the Western Hills Church of Christ. He was a member of Knob Creek Masonic Lodge No. 401, Temple Lions Club and Bell County Peace Officers Association. He was a judge for the Bell County Spelling Bee and a Reader for the Temple Public Library.

Services for Paul R. Reagan were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Western Hills Church of Christ of Temple with Minister James LeFan officiating. A Masonic burial was held in Bellwood Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife, Yvonne Ann Reagan of Temple; a son, Brian A. Reagan of Temple; his mother, Minnie Reagan of Temple; a sister, Mrs. Ronald T. (Patricia Ann) Lowe of Arlington.

Mrs. Shenkir was born in Bell County, Texas to Adolf and Anna Millian. She was a lifelong resident of Bell County. Mrs. Shenkir and her husband owned and operated Shenkir Grocery for many years prior to their retirement in 1973. She was a member of Temple Brethren Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph Shenkir, in 1980.

Services for Albina Shenkir were held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Harper Talasek Funeral Home in Temple with Rev. Albert Michalik officiating.

Burial was in Ocker Cemetery.

Survivors are two sons, Richard Shenkir of Waco and Randy Shenkir of Temple; three daughters, Judy Millender, Pat Wiater and Carol Stanke, all of Temple; two brothers, Joe Millian of Belton and Ed Millian of Temple; two sisters, Mary Martinec of Temple and Agnes Michalik of San Angelo and seven grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Albert E. Ersch, Sr.; son, Albert A. Ersch, Jr.; daughter - in - law, Barbara Ersch; grandchildren, Stephanie Ann Leihsing and Stephen Paul Ersch; sisters, Clara Gombert of San Antonio, Cora Kremel of Comfort and Elsie Burks of Abilene; brother, Ernst Bohnert, Jr. of Fredericksburg.

Peggy was preceded in death by her baby daughter, Frances Elaine Ersch and leaves behind many loving relatives and friends.

Features Buckholts School/ Community Reunion The second annual Buckholts School and Community Reunion will be held on June 3, 1989 with the theme being "Just For Old Time's Sake."

Antonio Czech Choral Club Sponsors Activities San

The San Antonio Czech Choral Club is sponsoring an event on Sunday, April 9, 1989 at Martinez Hall, 7791 St. Hedwig Road at FM 1516 in San Antonio, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Another occasion for a celebration is the Namesday or the Birthday. In this country, one's Namesday is rarely celebrated, but in Czechoslovakia, it is put on the same level as the Birthday.

On the days of popular patron saints, such as St. Joseph, St. Wenceslaus (Vaclav) or St. Anna, it is not uncommon to have bands of musicians going from one Joseph's house to another and serenading him. Also dances are often organized on the nearest Saturday and named Josefska, Vacla y ska or Annenska zabava. The word "zabava" stands for entertainment, but is often used also to mean dance. On one's Namesday or Birthday, people are congratulated as follows: V§ecko nejlep§i k svatku— Everything best for your Namesday.

All the above can be preceded by "I wish you" In Czech— "Pfeji vam" or "Pfeji Ti". The first is the polite and the latter the familiar form. The word "zdravi" stands for health, "§testi" for happiness, "spokojenost" for satisfaction, "narozeniny" for birthday, and "svatek" for namesday. As you can see, the above English translation of "mnoho §testi, zdravi a spokojenosti" is not a literal one. Learn the above phrases and use them in greeting those of your friends who know Czech.
