Food for Thought...

An organization may spread itself over the whole world -- may have thousand members...yet the average person will form his or her judgment of the company through his or her contact with one individual. If this person is rude or inefficient, it will require a lot of courtesy and efficiency to overcome the bad impression. Every member of an organization who, in any capacity comes in contact with the public, is a sales person...the impression he or she makes is an advertisement...good or bad! *** Our SPJST By - laws Article 33[a]states -- The Supreme Lodge has the duty and authority: - 13. to hold workshops for the training of local lodge officers in the first quarter of each year. This was adopted in the last (1988) convention. In accordance with that, the Local Lodge Officers' Workshop was held Saturday, February 25th at Lodge No. 47, Seaton.

We attended the workshop and so did a good representative group (approximately 170) of our membership statewide. All of the presentations were well - thought - out and everybody in attendance should have gone away with renewed interest and knowledge gained. We will not single out any particular SPJST presenters; they were all good and the guest speaker, Scott Gross, pointed out a thoughtful approach to the subject of fraternalism in our fraternal benefit Society. This writer feels that he inspired many of our members to continue in our efforts. There were very many questions asked your editor and we regret that time flew by so fast that some were answered only briefly.

Several asked about the scholarships for the State King and Queen.

While yours truly was at the Supreme Lodge meeting, State Youth Director Claudette Reese made her report and, therein, requested a scholarship for the State King and Queen (bottom of column 3, page 5 in February 15, 1989 Vestnik issue) which seemed like a very good idea; it would be a lasting gift they (king and queen) would always remember SPJST by, however, the Board decided to present them with SPJST Logo watches instead of scholarships (column 1, page 7 of same Vestnik issue).

We certainly need to cultivate and encourage our youth members to be our leaders of tomorrow. Could it be that we are saving in the wrong places?

Guest speaker Scott Gross included SWAT as part of his presentation and the AT he described meaning AND TRAIN; yes, that's what we have to keep in mind -- TRAINING! In conclusion we wish to express our gratitude to Lodge 47 for hosting the Local Lodge Officers' Workshop sponsored by the Home Office for their hospitality. The catered noon meal and homemade kolache served during the afternoon's break added much fraternizing with many local lodge representatives throughout the state. We encourage all officers and interested members to attend next year's workshop.

Fraternal activities should result in new prospects for membership since the writing of insurance in itself is fraternalism. By enrolling a new member and their family, we are exercising the first responsibility of fraternalism -- protecting one's family.

We must also remember benevolence is an important consideration in our Society, however, equal consideration must be given to projects and programs that will provide the opportunity for personal involvement by individual members.

While developing activities for youth, it is not enough to do things for our young people, but we must provide the opportunity for them to do things for themselves. We must make it possible for young members of our Society to share in the leadership of local lodges and districts, as well as on the state level.

Another thing we must remember, the area of leadership development and training is an important consideration in our Society's fraternal program. Seminars and conferences to train fraternal leaders in the skills and techniques of leadership should be a part of the annual activity schedule in our fraternal benefit society.

Our Society's fraternal activities should include those that are specifically planned to be implemented by the lodge on a local level; including worksheets and planning guides for local lodge leaders.

Fraternal activities should be measured against a quality standard to insure their most effectively appealing to all segments of membership; such as social, fraternal, vocational, benevolent, and outdoor camp. The more experience areas to which the activity can be related, the more effective the activity. Fraternal activities should also fulfill the special ethnic goals of our Society.

This editor strongly believes that recognition is an integral part of fraternal programs and activities. All of us have a need to be needed, and to know that someone cares. Forms of recognition can include certificates, plaques, statuettes, testimonials, citations, as well as titles and additional responsibility. A well planned program of recognition will bring new levels of motivation and inspiration, not only to those being recognized, but to the entire membership of our Society.

Fraternal activities and programs are a very vital part of achieving full dimension of membership in a Fraternal Benefit Society. These activities should serve to strengthen the local lodge, and will provide a stronger image for the Society itself and very directly enhance membership growth plus gain state and national recognition. ***

Today, we are nurturing, or if you will, helping keep alive the idea that our fore - fathers had in mind when they founded our SPJST Society. They felt that they wanted to found and establish a benevolent and fraternal organization that was humanitarian, and with a foundation of brotherhood and a financial investment in case of need and necessity. I am sure that they had no dream that our Society would reach the financial stability that it has as of this date. ***

Also attend your respective district meeting this Sunday, March 12th at Lodge No. 187 Round Rock in District II and the other one at Lodge No. 172 Pasadena in District V. ***

The final plans have been made for the District II spring meeting. The meeting will be held on March 12, 1989 at Lodge No 187, Round Rock beginning at 2 p.m., with registration beginning at 1 p.m.

The District II officers extend an invitation to all members to attend this business meeting.

A short youth program will also be presented and many door prizes will be given away. There will also be a contest for the largest percentage of members in attendance. The top three lodges will win prizes. A free meal is scheduled at about 5:30 p.m., but we are asking that each family bring either a salad or a dessert.

At the spring meeting we will have election of District II officers, recognition of 50 - year members and awards to top sales representatives as well as other various reports. This is a good time to renew fellowship with other friends in your district.

We are looking forward to seeing you all Sunday, March 12th at Round Rock.

Dear Members: It is this Sunday that we have our district meeting at Lodge No. 172, 3609 Preston, Pasadena. The lodge officers and members are looking forward to seeing you there!

Hallettsville Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, February 12, 1989 at Mr. Gatti's with Vice President Gaye Galetka presiding at the meeting in absence of President Annie Vahalik.

The pledge to the flag was recited.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the previous meeting which were approved and correspondence was read.

Our 50 - year members for 1989 include Matilda Gaidusek, Emma Gallia, Emma A. Holly, Milton Miculka, Steve G. Satsky, Magdaline Mary Vahalik and Frank J. Wojtek.

They will receive their 50 - year pins at our annual Family Day in August.

A letter was read concerning the local Lodge Officers' Workshop on February 25th at Lodge 47, Seaton.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka gave their usual reports.

The members were reminded of the District VI spring meeting to be held Sunday, April 9th with Lodge 30, Taiton hosting the meeting at Taiton Community Center.

Co - Youth Leaders Gaynell Chudej and Evelyn Holy gave a report. They plan to have an Easter egg hunt at the March meeting and encourage the youth of our lodge to attend, also the lodge will furnish pizza and refreshments for everyone that day.

The Audit Committee consisting of Elsie Mascheck, Evelyn Holy and Patsy Zabransky gave their report.

The meeting was then adjourned.

January, February and March birthdays honored were Elsie Mascheck, Gaynell Chudej and Ida Neubauer. Winner of the birthday cake was Elsie Mascheck.

A candy guessing game was won by Helen Zabransky. Door prize winners were Elsie Mascheck, Helen Zabransky, Vicky Zak, Evelyn Holy, Erwin Holy, Ida Neubauer, Gaynell Chudej and Patsy Zabransky.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, Marcn '.2th at Mr. Gatti's beginning at 2 p rn An Easter egg hunt will be held for the youth of our lodge. Pizza and refreshments will be provided by the lodge. Members and their families are invited to attend.

Congratulations to Annie and Philip Vahalik on the birth of a daughter, Elizabeth Ann born Saturday, February 18, 1989. She is welcomed home by a proud brother, Nicholas.

No. 40, El Campo-Hilije Meeting Lodge

The regular monthly meeting was held on Monday, February 20, 1989, following the social games.

President Rita Vanek called the meeting to order. Trustee Landis Kopecky led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and our deceased and sick members were remembered in a time of silence.

Secretary Leona Macha called the roll of officers; all were present except 1st Vice President Bennie Reck and Trustee Albert Kresta, Sr. The minutes of the previous meeting held January 16, 1989 were read and approved.

All correspondence since the last meeting was read. A letter from President Howard Leshikar regarding the workshop to be held on Saturday, February 25th at Seaton Hall, another letter from President Leshikar advising us of our fifty - year members, Mary Frances Boatwright, Vincent Dettling, Harry Lee Hafernick, Olga E. Popp, John Stephan, Evelyn Irene Watz and Hadvika Zacek. Our lodge plans to honor these members at a social during the year; date to be set later. We congratulate these members, a letter from El Campo Independent School District regarding scholarships for the May, 1989 graduates and thank you notes and a report of new insurance annuities, terminations and lapses.

Treasury Madeline Shimek gave the financial report for January, 1989.

Youth Leader Mary Ann Karasek reported on activities of the Youth Club.

The lodge accepted the transfer of Douglas W. Dornak from Lodge No. 175. We welcome you, Douglas and hope to meet you soon.

A motion by Leona Macha, seconded by Floyd Shimek, that we award scholarships to each of the following schools: El Campo Independent School $200 Scholarships District -- (5) $1,000; Louise Independent School District -- (5) $200 Scholarships $1,000.

Dear Members: My goodness, such a good crowd at our monthly meeting last Sunday. The pledge to the flag was recited, followed by the reading of last month's minutes

by Secretary Salac. Correspondence included a thank you from S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II of Needville, a thank you from Sister Dorothy Prasifka, a letter from the Czech Heritage Society of Corpus Christi, a letter from the Longhorn Ballroom, the National Fraternal Congress, and the SPJST Supreme Lodge.

President Cheri Petr gave the entertainment report, also named all who serve on the Entertainment Committee.

Ball Team -- Brother Jarma had no report.

House Committee -- Brother Salac reported on the water tower that was repaired as well as the fence, thanks to him and Brother Olson. He thanked Brother Paul Pokladnik for his help to arrive at the lodge to turn on the heat during the freeze; also Brother Salac thanked all the help on cleaning, mowing and clipping the hedge, namely, Sister Evelyn Salac, Sister Carlyn Ondrusek, Sister Buelah Horak, Sister Rose Scott and Brothers 0. Horak, Charlie Petr, Randy Scott and Emil Petr.

Lodge Coordinator Schulz gave the dues report and your newsletter will be arriving at the end of the month.

Lodge No. 88, Houston News In January 1989, Mary and Johnny Kosut were invited by one of their sons, Gary, and wife, Katie, to go with them on their skiing vacation to New Mexico and Colorado. They traveled

by car and spent a few days in Santa Fe, New Mexico visiting the Wheelwright Indian Museum and St. John's University, also the shops around the square. They continued their trip to Taos, New Mexico and on to Pagosa Springs, Colorado, the skiing resort. Mary told me the weather was beautiful with sunshine and snow four to five feet deep, and the temperature was 20 degrees to 30 degrees below zero; however, it didn't seem as cold as our Texas Northers.

Gary and Katie skied and went snowmobiling, and she and Johnny enjoyed sitting by a huge fireplace sipping hot chocolate looking out the big plate glass window watching the skiers and the beautiful winter scenery.

After a week of the "Life of Riley" Mary and Johnny came home to Katy, and their children went back to Austin.

Katie is back in school at University of Texas where she is working on her doctorate in Architecture. She recently won a prize for having the best design for a building for St. John's University in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Gary is a graduate of UT and is employed as a Civil Engineer for the City of Austin.

Mary Ehret, who is a Birthday Club member and she and husband, Richard, participate in the Choral Group of Lodge 88.

Wednesday, March 8, 1989—VESTNIK/5 Mary informed me that Major Joseph M. Kiel of the United States Army is now back home in Houston, from his last post in Germany. Major Kiel is, the son of Mary and Richard Ehret, and a graduate of Texas A&M University of Veterinary Medicine and has set up his practice in the Woodlands. We wish Major Kiel good luck in his endeavor.

On February 26, 1989, the Czech Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Vlastimil Kovanda, played at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville from 2 to 3:30 p.m. They played so beautifully and no one knows how gratifying it was for those confined residents unless you were there to witness it. Their happy faces, clapping their hands, and those who were able were trying to dance; this was evidence that they were enjoying it very much. There were about 25 members of the band in attendance.

The Needville Lodge No. 81 was well represented by Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Matcek, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Walzel, also Mr. and Mrs. Nowotny. Mr. Nowotny is a new resident there now.

Many of you remember him well; he was a real active SPJST member up to this time. Administrator Harvey Marx and wife, Martha, with their kitchen staff, served some refreshments to the musicians and visitors. Thanks to the orchestra members for such a fine gesture.

Saturday, February 25th Manny Green played at Lodge 88, with Era Richards in command, with Gene and Ruth Kibbons, Millie and Harry Wheeler, Ella and Lee Flores, and John Chometa assisting her. The dance was well attended with a great group of people. As I have said before, Harley was there in tuxedo, celebrating his birthday. Viola, his wife, brought a big decorated birthday cake. Happy birthday, Harley.

Check our Vestnik, the Bulletin Board and the calendar schedule, which are always available, for all the fine dances coming up in March and April.

The Ladies' Circle of Lodge 92 met on February 14th, with 41 ladies and 9 men present.

President Betty Billington called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m. Betty passed out 3 by 5 index cards; each member is to fill in the card with something that has happened to them, something they would like to do or some place they would like to go. Then the cards were given to Vice President Lillie McMillen and, at each meeting, Lillie will read 3 or 4 cards and the members are to guess who wrote the card; should be a lot of fun.

Get well cards were sent to Mr. Wruble, Mary Dunlap, Millie Water and Joe Gregory, and a sympathy card to Louise Oujesky family. Lillie McMillen and Mac also went to visit Sunshine Easley, who is in a rest home in Keene, and Lillie said that Sunshine looks very good and was happy to have visitors. Sunshine is a member of the Circle for a number of years and has lots of friends there.

Joyce Tesar announced that there will be a benefit dance on April 8th for "KASH FOR KIDS," an organization for troubled kids. Jodie Mikula Band will play. The Circle voted to donate $25 to the benefit, also to donate some cakes Tor the cake walk the same night.

After the meeting, the door prize, a heart - shaped red pillow (appropriate for Valentine) made by Clara Marchioni, was won by Betty Loyd.

Florence Greer will donate the March door prize.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Clara Cohen, Magie Konecny, Pauline Morbitzer, Rose Nieswiodomy, Imogene Reaves and Al Svacek.

Hostesses for March will be Martha Durham, Clara Cohen, Esta Belle Hubenak and Ann Schneider.

Marie Tesar gave thanks and all members enjoyed a delicious lunch.

Welcome back from Polly Ryan Hospital in Richmond are Ladik Sabrsula and Rosie Zdunkewicz. We are sorry to hear that Harmon Matula is hospitalized in Polly Ryan Hospital and wish him a speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear that Frances Jezek and Richard Reininger were dismissed to a skilled home and Roy Schroeder was dismissed to the VA Hospital.

A box of bananas donated by AARP, lap robes donated by the Senior Citizens of Damon, bibs donated by Norma Walcik, crafts donated by Harriette Legendre and cookies donated by Vlasta Nowotny.

Every Monday morning, Elverna Graeber, Olie Eixman, Nona Eixman, Joy Hurta, Alice Bergen and Merylyn Leus come to have sing - a - long with the residents. These residents enjoy singing.

Every Tuesday morning, Kitty Smith of Wallis comes to have Bible study with the residents. Eula Ganske from New Gulf comes to visit with the in - room residents every other week and teaches Bible study when needed.

In the afternoon, Frances Muzny, Lydia Hortmon, Georgia Vacek, Ida Gasch and Lorene Novosad came to play games with the residents.

The Damon ladies, Catholic ladies, and Sunshine ladies came Thursday afternoon to have crafts with the residents who really enjoy crafts.

Every Friday morning, Annie Stavinoha and Rosie Kovar come to have rosary with the residents. In the afternoon, Lydia Hortmon, Freda Klawitter and Melva Hastings come to roll hair for these residents, which they greatly appreciate.

Monday afternoons, February 6th and 20th, Betty Seiler came from the library to show movies. They enjoyed the movies and popcorn.

Tuesday afternoon, February 14th, Gladys Hix had a birthday party with the Valentine Party. Juanita Chudalla, daughter of Gladys Hix, brought a large decorated cake. Lydia Hortmon brought brownies. Martha Marx brought a heart cake and candy, and Irene Martinez, D.O.N., brought candy. Volunteers Lydia Hortmon, Lorene Novosad and Margaret Jones helped serve cake, candy, punch and coffee to all. Paul Shafer and Gladys Hix were chosen King and Queen for the Day. Paul and Gladys were presented a boutonniere and a corsage.

Valentines were passed out to the residents.

Thursday evening, February 23rd, Larry Ognoski, Fred Gerke and George Lolley provided music and singing for the residents. Everyone had a great time. Families and friends are invited to come and be with their loved ones.

"Happy Birthday" for the month of February are Gladys Hix, Maxine Hood, Paul Shafer and Sophie Rusnak and Staff Anthony Foston.

The Birthday Party was held Friday, February 24th, which included singing "Happy Birthday" and listening to favorite music. The Unique Shop provided corsages and boutonnieres.

The First Baptist Church of Needville brought a cake and Cecilia Fernandez brought a cake. Volunteers Melva Hastings, Bobbie Bates and Ida Gasch helped serve cake, ice cream, coffee and punch to all. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

Sunday afternoon, February 26th, Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra came to play favorite Czech music.

Lydia Hortmon and Helen Buchta helped serve cake, cookies, coffee and punch to all. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon.

District II Meeting Activities Dear Members, The District II spring meeting will be held on Sunday, March 12th at Lodge No. 187, Round Rock.

Registration begins at 1:00 p.m.

Business meeting will begin at 2:00 p.m. (The meeting is a very important one for District II; it will be election of officers).

We will have a short youth program.

If there are any youth who have not contacted me, and would like to be on the program, a short talent act, please let me know.

The schedule for the meeting will be similar to the past; SPJST 50 - year members will be announced, insurance sales' awards, committee reports, and the lodge that will host the fall meeting.

There will be prizes for the adults and also for the youth. Prizes will be awarded to lodges with the most percentage of members present.

Members, be sure and register when you arrive, so your lodge will have a chance at the prizes. We hope each lodge will have a large attendance for this important meeting.

After the meeting there will be free drinks and a free meal. Each member is asked to bring a salad or sweet for the meal.

The officers of District II invite all members in District II and the Supreme Lodge officers and families to attend our meeting.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Our Youth Group had a very nice Valentine Dance at Bavarian Village on February 2, 1989. All of our youth members were present along with a lot of guests. Everyone enjoyed playing games and dancing to the music.

Everyone, especaily, enjoyed the food and decorations.

The Valentine Dance Committee included April Haag, Devin Koehler, Amy Doeppenschmidt and Andrea Mills. A special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Roy Haag for letting us use the Bavarian Village and to the parents who chaperoned.

Rock YC Holds February Meeting Dear Readers, On Sunday, February 26th, Lodge 187 youth members held their monthly meeting. Stephanie Leschber led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Thirteen members, two visitors and three adults were present. Our visitors were welcomed and recognized by our President Patrick Johnson. The visitors were DYC Patsy Koslovsky and her daughter, Melanie. They are members at Lodge 47, Seaton.

Our social for March is to go bowling on March 19th. More information will be mailed to members.

We had 18 members and 9 adults attend the District II Skating Party in February. A good time was had by all.

Thanks to Patsy Koslovsky for organizing this activity.

Door prizes were won by Lauren Johnson, Amy Rohlack, Lance Rohlack and Stephanie Leschber.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 23 of Moravia, express our sympathy to the family of our departed brother WILLIE EMIL MATUSTIK, who passed away Thursday, January 26, 1989 in Johns Community Hospital in Taylor, at the age of 91.

Rosary was recited Friday, January 27th at 7 p.m. at the Condra Funeral Home in Taylor.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 28th at 10 a.m. in Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Granger with Msgr. Edward Rabroker officiating.

Brother Matustik was born May 23, 1897 in Lavaca County, Texas. On September 28, 1948 he married Julia Dobias. He was a World War I veteran and a retired farmer. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, SPJST and Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in Granger.

Survivors include his wife, Julia Matustik; brother, Ludwig Matustik of Schulenburg; a nephew, Don Dobias of Austin and several nieces and nephews.

Brother Matustik was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

May our departed brother rest in peace.

Of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge No. 172 Pasadena, Texas wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother MICHAEL JOSEPH TANECKA, who passed away January 31, 1989 at the age of 28.

Rosary was recited February 2, 1989 in Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus, Texas. Mass was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. February 3rd at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Columbus, Texas with Father Adam Martinez, celebrant. Burial followed in St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery.

Survivors include his father and mother, Joe and Rose Tanecka of Lampasas, Texas; two sisters, Mary Jolene Hardy and Janice Marie Tanecka; a nephew, Joseph Hardy, all of Pasadena, Texas; grandparents, John and Wilma Tanecka of West Point, Texas and Frank Chovanec of Columbus, Texas; also surviving are aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

Pallbearers were Marvin Tanecka, Ted Harbere, Johnny Michalsky, Jim Martin, Bob Smith and Ken Freytag.

May our departed brother rest in peace.

Michael Joseph Tanecka will be remembered by everyone he ever knew as a good loving person whose life was filled with pain, but he never let his health or his physical handicaps change his outlook on life. Everyone at Lodge 172, all his school friends and

his entire family knew Mike as a helpful young man with a generous heart; his main goal in life was to make people happy. He always had something good to say about everyone he knew. He was a people's person. He just loved people.

His favorite thing to do was cook and bake. He was studying to become a chef. His dream was to some day have a wonderful bakery; a small but very special bakery, where he could bake all his wonderful desserts. His cheesecake was sampled by many. He never baked anything far himself, he always shared all of his tasty creations; one thing he really enjoyed was to get up early ahead of his family and surprise them with a fancy breakfast.

When he was a little boy, quite often he was too sick to play with the neighborhood children, so he sat in my kitchen and learned to cook.

He will be missed by many. His untimely death in an auto accident, will leave a great void in our lives. For those of you who knew our family will remember that Mike was our Center.

He was the youngest of our three children. Our two daughters gave of their lives to share everything with Mike because he was their baby, too.

We all made him our baby because he was so special.

We lost our Mike on January 31, 1989. An accident in his truck on Interstate 10 took him from us. He is survived by his parents, Joe and Rose Tanecka of Lampasas, Texas; two sisters, Mary Jolene Hardy and Janice Marie Tanecka; one nephew, Joseph Wm. Hardy, all of Pasadena, Texas; grandparents, John and Wilma Tanecka of West Point, Texas, Frank Chovanec of Columbus, Texas; also aunts and uncles, Lorine and John Michalsky of Houston, Lyndelle Harbers of West Point and Marvin and Laura Tanecka of Plano, Texas.

We wish to express our "Thanks and Gratitude" to all of our friends, neighbors and relatives who loved Mike because all of you made his life a little easier.

He was laid to rest February 3rd after a beautiful service in St. Anthony's Catholic Church at Columbus, Texas by Father Adam Martinez of Lampasas, Texas. Father Martinez officiated at both ceremonies, church and St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery.

In Memoriam ALMA KUBALA, 84, of Houston and formerly of Temple, died Saturday, December 17, 1988 at a Houston nursing home.

Services were at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Temple, with Msgr. Arthur Michalka officiating. Burial was in Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple.

Mrs. Kubala was born in Fayetteville and later moved to Temple. She was a member of the Altar Society of Temple and the Catholic Daughters.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward F. Kubala, who was a bookkeeper for SPJST Supreme Lodge in Temple for more than 20 years, prior to his death in 1976.

Survivors include a son, Edward J. Kubala of Denver, Colorado; two daughters, Margaret Wilson of Richardson, Texas and Angeline Stastny of Houston, Texas; eight

grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The body lay - in - state at the church from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother JUDGE JOE SPURLOCK, SR., who passed away Sunday, February 5, at his residence at the age of 78 years.

Brother Spurlock attended the Southern Methodist University and then went to the University of Texas where he received his Bachelor of Arts and Jurisprudence degrees before he was 22.

He had practiced law 37 years in Fort Worth before being elected judge of the 96th District Court in Tarrant County in 1968.

He served on the district court until January 1, 1975, when he was sworn in after being elected to the 2nd Court of Appeals that covered 12 county areas.

Brother Spurlock retired January 10, 1983, from the Appeals Court.

He was a member of Meadowbrook United Methodist Church where he taught the Men's Bible Class and was a longtime member of the Board.

During World War II, he was a member of the Army's Security Intelligence Corps, a 50 - year member of the Masons, Shriners, Knights of Phythias, BPOE Elks Lodge, Past Commander of American Legion of Texas, Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, the NAACP, Fort Worth Club, Knife and Fork Club, SPJST Lodge No. 154 and Sokol Fort Worth since 1940.

In 1977 he was preceded in death by his first wife, Clarice Stiles Spurlock of 45 years.

In 1978 he married Monica Basel, the widow of a New York district judge.

Survivors include his wife, Monica Spurlock; sons, Joe Spurlock, II and Dean Spurlock, all of Fort Worth; daughter, Kay Spurlock Heizer of Seguin; sister, Maxine Hay of Fort Summer, New Mexico and eight grandchildren.

The family received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Shannon Rose Hill Funeral Home.

Services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Meadowbrook Methodist Church, with Rev. Michael McKee officiating.

Pallbearers were, Mr. Jay Schultz, Joe Corbett, Judge Charles Murray, Denning Schatman, Hal Monk, Clay Peebles, Kelly Jacobs, Bob Guthrie and Marion Massey.

Interment was at Shannon Rose Hill Cemetery.

Vladimir was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia on December 4, 1897 and moved to Mineola, Texas in 1907.

He was a World War I veteran and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi. He married Marie Krivanek of Czechoslovakia in 1926 and they moved to Corpus Christi, Texas in 1947 where he was a longtime farmer. He and his wife, Marie, and his son, Charles, moved to Montana in 1958 and has ranched in Montana since that time.

He is survived by two sons, Leo of Terrell, Texas and Charles of Hilger, Montana; three daughters, Mrs. C.J. (Libby) Ackerman of New Port, Virginia, Mrs. Helen Dulak of Austin, Texas and Mrs. C.M. (Mary Ann) Dodd III of Corpus Christi, Texas; one sister, Mildred Boubelik of Denver, Colorado; 13 grandchildren, six great - grandchildren and one niece and one nephew.

He was a lifelong resident of Bell County and married Vlasta Mikulas on May 17, 1938, in Temple. He was a rural mail carrier in the Temple area for 18 years and owned and operated a grocery store near Seaton for 20 years.

Mr. Martinec retired from Temple Products after 14 years of service and served as a trustee at the Seaton school. He was a charter member of the Evangelical Brethren Church of Temple. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 24, where he served as financial secretary for 15 years. He was co - director of the Seaton Senior Citizens Center.

Survivors are his wife, Vlasta Martinec of Temple; three sons, Franklin Martinec, Jr. of Phoenix, Arizona, James Martinec of Lufkin and John Martinec of Clear Lake; a daughter, Linda Morgan of Cameron; a brother, Joe Lee Martinec of Austin; two sisters, Martha Kocurek and Wilma Psencik, both of Austin; seven grandchildren and a great - grandchild.

Expression Of Sympathy On behalf of SPJST Jaromir Lodge No. 54 West, we, the Resolution Committee expresses its condolences to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother ERVIN L. PUSTEJOVSKY, of Route 2, West, who passed away late Monday evening, February 27, 1989 at a local hospital at the age of 61.

Recitation of the Rosary took place at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, with Rev. Isidore Rozycki.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption with Msgr. Ray Widacki as celebrant and Rev. Isidore Rozycki, co celebrant. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Brother Pustejovsky was born 21 April 1927 in Hill County, Texas to August and Stevie Pustejovsky. He married Bernice Uptmor in Tours on 29 December 1949. He was employed for 38 years at General Tire Rubber Company in Waco before retiring in 1984.

He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 2305, the KJT Lodge No. 31, and SPJST Lodge No. 54 since July, 1959, having served as sales representative. (His father, August Pustejovsky served as president of SPJST Lodge No. 54.) He was also a past president of the West Bass Club, a member of the United Rubber Workers Union, and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Pustejovsky of West; his mother, Stevie Pustejovsky of West; one son, Ronnie Pustejovsky of Waco; three daughters, Mrs. Tommy (Peggy) Holecek of West, Delayne Massirer of Speegleville and Donna Price of West; one brother, Lambert Pustejovsky of Arlington, Texas; six grandchildren plus several nieces and nephews.

Serving as active pallbearers included Tom Wolf, Bill Wolf, Mike Hutyra, Daniel Pokluda, Harry Lee Hykel, Jimmy Polansky, Bernard Chudej and George Fidler.

Honorary pallbearers were Eddie Marek, Ed Mashek, Adolph Volcik, Edwin Volcik, Felix Mynar, Ted Kocian, Jerry Cocek, Floyd Wolf, Al Picha, Ernest Zahirniak, Joe Wolf, Joe Holasek, Henry Nors, James Miller and Bill Karlik.

The family has designated memorials be made to the West Public Library or to the Little Sheppard Day Care Center.

Features Bravenec National Merit Finalist John B. Bravenec, senior at A&M Consolidated High School (College Station) and member of Lodge 189, Bryan - College Station, advanced to the final stage of the National Merit Scholarship competition.

John's father, Lorence L. Bravenec, is a member of Lodge 88, Houston and is a professor at Texas A&M University. John's grandfather, John J. Bravenec of College Station, is also a member of Lodge 88, as was his deceased grandmother, Florence M. Bravenec. One set of John's great grandparents, Tomas and Teresa Bravenec, were charter members of Lodge 9, Snook and among the original members of the SPJST. Another set of John's great grandparents, Josef and Mary Katherine Malinak, were members of Lodge 88, Houston.

Students are chosen for the National Merit competition by scoring in the top 0.5 percent of a national exam, the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test.

John will be attending The University of Texas in Austin beginning in the Fall of 1989.

In Theater Invites Stage's Challenges

By Pamela Sword - Taylor, a Flower Mound free - lance writer ARLINGTON -- Even at age 5, B.J. Cleveland wasn't nervous, and he knew all his lines. Now 20 years and 120 roles later, Cleveland has been involved in almost every aspect of theater imaginable.

At the moment, Cleveland is employed at Theatre Arlington. "If I'm not at the desk, I'm building a set, dumping trash or starring in shows," he said. "Since the staff consists only of myself, Judy Rehders and Cliff Redd, we're all very, very busy."

Cleveland also hosts "Cartoon Clubhouse," the local television kids show on KXTX (Channel 39).

In his first professional role -- at age 7 -- he was a street urchin in the play Mr. Scrooge at Casa Manana.

By age 12, he had joined the Equity actors union and toured the country in the production "A Thousand Clowns." After three and a half months on the road, he returned to the area and continued working at Casa Manana as well as other area theaters.

By the time he began high school, Cleveland realized he and only four years left with his peers. "I hadn't spent any time with them," he said.

"These are the kids I grew up with. I hated just completely missing out on school stuff."

Although Cleveland concentrated mainly on high school drama, he didn't completely jump out of area regional theater and, whenever possible, he did shows in the area.

After his senior year he worked summer stock for four and a half months at Granbury Opera House.

After that he attended Tarrant County Junior College, where he received an associate degree in drama, and he landed the job at Channel 39.

"We're about to go into our third year with Cartoon Clubhouse, that's really scary, but it's fun."

Cleveland has a large family in the area. "Part of my family is Czechoslovakian in origin; every time somebody gets married we have a polka dance and eat Czech food."

Cleveland attributes much of his success to his family. "I would say they have been, in a way, role models," he said. "My parents gave me a full - steam - ahead personality.

My sister is a gymnast and my 10 - year - old brother likes theater, gymnastics anc computers. We're all involved in 12 things at once."

Cleveland just finished four shows over a three - month period. "You get worn down physically, emotionally and mentally," he said, "but once a show is over -- if you don't have something coming up immediately -you feel lost."

Cleveland's portrayal of Dr. Frankenstein in Trinity Art Council's recent production of Young Frankenstein was his 120th role. The next show he will appear in is The Foreigner, scheduled to open February 3rd. It will run for six weeks at Theatre Arlington.

Not only has Cleveland done theater, but in 1983 he played Pfc. Scott Bush in the movie Streamers, which was filmed in Las Colinas. And while visiting in Los Angeles in 1984 he did a two - week stint on the TV sitcom Facts of Life with childhood friend Lisa Whelchel.

However, Cleveland says he will stay with Theatre Arlington. "I dort't think I'll ever get completely away from it. I'm very busy in this area, and I'm glad of that," he said.

"Right now, Theatre Arlington is between being a major community theater and a professional theater.

We've set a standard, and we have to keep meeting it with every show. We're selling out crowds with six weeks of performances."

Even with his busy schedule Cleveland is involved with several different charities. "I do a lot of work with Easter Seals along with Tracy Rowlett and Troy Dungan," he said of the two Dallas TV personalities. "I make public appearances on behalf of the Arlington Kiwanis' Just Say No To Drugs Program."

This Christmas season Cleveland will represent the Arlington Woman's Shelter Toys for Tots Program at Butler Elementary School. "Instead of giving presents to each other, the students are going to bring a gift and give it to the shelter," he said.

Recently, Cleveland gave an advice workshop for the State Thespian Convention at W.E. Boswell High School.

"It was sort of a big brother advice, sit around and talk kind of thing," he said. "I just told them be easy to work with and always give 100 percent."

Cleveland also has directed several children's plays, worked in creative dramatic workshops and choreographed several high school musicals. "I like to keep up with that.

These are the kids who will keep theaters going years from now."

Cleveland has some critical advice for would - be stage parents. "I definitely don't think a child should be pushed -- it'll harm them more than anything. Make sure they want to do it. If you are wondering if your child is theater material, look for singing a lot, mimicking, a high reading level and a good personality. Let them do what they enjoy and listen to them. They need a good friend as well as a parent."

And to aspiring actors and actresses, "Kill'em with kindness," he stresses.

"Good people skills are your best asset. Be a neat person, and give somebody a hug."

The Death Of Latislav Pohrobek By: W.J. Malina The death of Latislav Pohrobek, the seventeen - year - old King of Bohemia, left doubts that he had died of natural causes. Some claimed that he had been slowly poisoned after he returned to Prague in 1457 to assume the rulership of the Czech Crown Lands in his own right. During that day and age court intrigue was common, nobles of all ranks sought power and prestige by any and all means. The Czech Estates in the Bohemian Kingdom were no different, they too had their share of political intrigue.

During Latislav's minority years Bohemia was governed by George of PodebradY (Jiff z podebrad), who ruled as regent or administrator in Latislav's stead. After Latislav died, George of PodebradY was elected King of Bohemia. The election and reign of George of Podebrady was tainted by suspicion and allegation that he was responsible for having Latislav secretly poisoned.

Latislav was born about four months after his father's death.

Although he was a Hapsburg, the son of Albert II the Archduke of Austria, King of Bohemia and King of Hungary, Latislav was given the surname Pohrobek (English -posthumous, literally "after the burial" in Czech). He spent most of his youth in Vienna, was crowned King of Hungary in 1445 and King of Bohemia in 1453. About two months after he returned to Prague in 1457, Latislav became ill and died, leaving three countries without a sovereign -Bohemia, Austria and Hungary, which at that time included Slovakia. After Latislav's death Matthias Korvin (Corvinus) was chosen King of Hungary and George of Podebrady was elected King of Bohemia.

According to an article in the July 1988 issue of "CeskoslovenskY Svet," written by Eva Cobejova, all suspicions about the possible unnatural death of Latislav Pohrobek were proved wrong and the name of George of PodebradY totally vindicated. Latislav's body was exhumed in November of 1984 and examined by modern techniques, under the direction of Dr. Emanuel V16ek. After three years of study it was determined that Latislav died from a kind of leukemia and no trace of poison was found. Today the remains of Latislav Pohrobek can be seen in the National Museum in Prague.

Museum Tells Story Of Czech Pioneers 7y George Carmack of San Antonio Express News February 4, 1989 Edition A Czech fraternal organization has a museum with what must be the most unusual name of any museum in Texas -- or anywhere else.

The museum -- a very interesting one and open to public -- is the SPJST Museum in downtown Temple.

The SPJST name comes from the initials of the original name of the fraternal group that sponsors it. That organization was chartered in Texas in 1897 under its name in Czech -Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas.

That name has been changed to English, and the English version comes

Original Initials But the museum, the overall lodge organization and individual lodges still carry the original SPJST initials as part of their name.

The 2,000 artifacts in the museum tell in fine fashion the story of Czech pioneers in Texas. fr Texans of Czech ancestry may view these artifacts with added sentiment, but Bonnie and I can testify the museum is of outstanding interest no matter the viewer's ancestry.

Farm tools and sunbonnets, dance costumes and wedding dresses and clocks and watches that have counted the hours on both sides of the Atlantic all have found a place in the museum.

One alarm clock quickly catches one's attention. It looks much like an old - fashioned alarm clock and has a working alarm, but it is far larger, its face almost the size of a dinner plate.

Then, in addition to the regular numbers, there are 12 more numbers in red, thus making it a full 24 - hour clock.

Parade of Costumes Along the walls there is a parade of uniforms and colorful costumes of the Czechoslovakia homeland. Several trunks and hampers that made the long ocean journey stand along the walls. A big one is filled to its top with beautiful shawls and scarfs.

Bonnie and I had two fine guides -separately -- to the museum. Our chief guide was Thelma Bartosh, the museum curator. The other was Howard Leshikar, president of the Supreme Lodge SPJST, which operates a major life insurance program for its members. There are 55,000 members of SPJST, all in Texas.

But Bonnie's and my interest was solely in the musuem, which occupies the entire first floor of the SPJST headquarters. Thelma has unmatched knowledge of the museum, having worked there even before she became curator. Her grandparents came to Texas from Czechoslovakia in the 1880s.

When it became known the new Temple headquarters building might have a museum, the response from Texans with Czech ancestry was overwhelming "We didn't start out to have a museum," Leshikar said. "But things were brought to us with so much value and interest that we came to realize we must have one."

The stories on the unexpected success of the museum turned the conversation to its first curator, Otto Hanus. Thelma had been his assistant.

"Otto worked for Sears Roebuck & Company as manager of farm implement sales in this area," Thelma said. "He had a great record. Sears had an annual contest in Waco, and Otto won the display prize 11 years out of 12."

"The SPJST Supreme Lodge hired him in 1970 to set up and take charge of a system to collect all the things needed to make the museum a success," she continued.

"He could stir people up. Czechs from the four Texas counties where the Czechs originally settled particularly gave wonderful things that came from their pioneer ancestors. And those who visited Czechoslovakia brought back gifts for the museum."

Hanus kept going strong to a ripe, old age. One of the most appealing rooms in the museum is the Pioneer Room. Its centerpiece is a small log

cabin that Hanus built when lie was 82 years old.

The cabin is a replica of the first Czech home built in Texas. It was built in 1854 in Austin County where many pioneer Czechs settled. It was near the town of Nelsonville, which is not far from the historic Wesley Brethren Church we wrote about in one of our recent Saturday pieces.

Builder of this origional Czech home was Joseph Lidumil Leshikar, of the ancestral family of Howard Leshikar.

Another exhibit is a mannequin with a pretty face, dressed as a cotton picker.

She is wearing overalls with patches on the knees and carrying a long cotton - picking sack. Her costume is topped with what was known as a slat sunbonnet. There is much headgear on display, from embroidery caps for festive days to even an elegant, ostrich - trimmed hat.

An even more interesting room in the museum is devoted to old tools, most going back to pioneer Czech families. Most early - day Czechs were farmers, and cotton was the principal crop.

Many of the tools came from the Old Country. Though rusted away, there was a substantial part of an old plow brought from Czechoslovakia in 1885. Nearby was a broad - bladed ax in the Czech Veselka family since 1852.

An older hewing ax, used to square logs, had been used as early as 1870.

Because many of the pioneer Czechs came to Texas in the 1870s, many hand tools date back to that period.

A scythe was brought from Germany that year, and a flail used to thresh grain by beating it dates to 1860. Oldest is a grass - cutting scythe labeled as having been made in Russia in 1760 and brought over much later by a pioneer.

A pitchfork with two steel points is dated 1901, and beside it is a similar fork, its points carved from wood.

There is a hand rake much like those we have today, but all of its teeth are made of wood.

We saw many of these old tools in company with Leonard Mikeska, a member of SPJST for more than 35 years, and for a number of those years, its secretary - treasurer.

He pointed out interesting items given the museum by the Winedale Museum at Round Top. One was a hand - split, red cedar shingle. With it was a froe (also spelled frow), which is a sort of hand ax with its handle at right angles to its blade. It was used a century ago to split shingles from blocks of cedar.

In the old - time kitchen we saw a wood stove. If you lived in the country, your grandmother probably cooked on a stove that burned wood -before graduating to a coal oil or coal stove.

Antiques Important Mikeska gave an appealing reason why museums with antique items are important.

"It is a great place for school children, and most children from anywhere near here visit it at least once a year," he said. "It is important for them to understand how grandparents or great - grandparents lived. It is one thing to tell them that their grandfather lived in a cabin and split shingles for the roof by hand, but seeing is believing."

Mikeska made the point that adults also might be helped by seeing what their ancestors had to do in an earlier time.

But apart from any lesson, the pure pleasure of seeing these exhibits, with the colorful Czech background, made

this SPJST Museum visit something to remember.

Folklore Puppets Bonnie's favorite exhibit was that of the 114 - year - old puppets. There are 13 of them in a row -- men, women and children, each dressed in a colorful costume. All were standing erect, with their control wires reaching up to the top of the glass - fronted case.

Three on the left end are the "terrible" ones: the Hastrmann (Water Sprite), the D'abel (Devil) and the Hrbata Carodejnice (Hunchback Witch).

"Czech folklore says these three keep you on the straight and narrow path, " Thelma said. "If you do something wrong, their punishment of you will be something terrible."

The SPJST puppets were brought to Texas from Czechoslovakia and used in puppet shows over a long period.

They then stayed in an attic about 30 years before being found.

But surpassing all puppets in the museum is a Mandarin puppet more than 150 years old.

"Back in the 1870s, it was used to teach Christianity in China," Thelma said.

A beautiful display of dolls was given the museum by the Czech Embassy in Washington, D.C., but the prettiest item was a doll dressed in Czech costume.

"The costume was given us by Maritza Morgan, a Czech artist and sculptor living at Chautauqua, New York," Thelma explained. "She came through Temple on her way to Austin to display her art at the University. She stopped at our museum and saw things she thought were beautiful.

"She later sent us this marvelous

Czech costume. It had been made by her mother. Maritza wore it as did her two daughters later, Thelma added.

A fine collection of musical instruments, often from the Old Country, ranged from violins to tubas.

There was a beautiful dulcimer and many a well - worn accordian. An organ there was bought from Sears, Roebuck and Company for $28.45. It still has a good tone.

Unbelievably, one of the most breathtaking museum exhibits is of pencils. There were more than 70,000 in a great mass, most with advertising on them.

Now for the oldest objects in the entire museum: three coins from Moravia and Silesia. They are dated A.D. 658 and 638 and the oldest of all -- A.D. 627.

The museum also had a library. It is a wonder with 23,000 books -- 18,000 in Czech.

It is the weekly publication of the Supreme Lodge. Two of the 16 - page issues we saw were in Czech, and there were two special features teaching Czech to English speakers.

Gene Mikulik Completes Sculpture Of "Doughboy" For American Legion November 12, 1989, American Legion Post No. 94 in Flatonia will unveil one of the most beautiful pieces of art ever completed in Central Texas.

For over three years, Gene Mikulik has been working on a lifesize sculpture of a World War I "Doughboy" that will be dedicated to all men and women of the Flatonia area who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States.

This project began in 1985 , when Otto Steinhauser suggested to Gene Mikulik that he consider making an appropriate monument for placement in front of the American Legion Hall.

Mikulik is reported to have asked Steinhauser what he had in mind and the response that he got was, "I don't know -- you are the sculptor, the artist and the idea man -- just design something that will honor every man and woman who has served their country, whether in peacetime or wartime."

Flatonia's most famous sculptor took this perplexing problem home and he now states that an idea popped into his head that very night. What better way to honor our service men and women than to produce a sculpture from World War I -- the war to end all wars! Gene Mikulik also wished to honor someone special from that war. His father - in - law, Willie J. Migl, was a World War I "Doughboy!"

Gene and Josephine Mikulik still have some of Willie Migl's momentos from the war; however, that is not all that he brought back from France following the war. He brought back two bad lungs after having been gassed by the German Army -- Willie Migl died at age 39, and Josephine was 21/2

years old at the time. This is an added reason that Flatonia's "Doughboy" will have a special place in our hearts.

The sculptor now had to find a model and this problem was soon resolved. Willie Migl's son, Bowdy, is almost the perfect image of his father.

Gene Mikulik was now ready to look for scrap iron to construct the "bones" of this lifesize sculpture.

Drilling - stem pipe was used for the legs and some other parts of the body -- it was time to weld pieces of scrap iron to make the pelvis, waist, chest, shoulders, neck, and head!

Gene Mikulik's "Doughboy" is not a simple soldier in uniform. There was the rifle, gas mask, canteen and other parts of the uniform to mold into this remarkable piece of art. Hundreds of hours were expended placing liquid metal over all parts of the sculpture -even to the extent that muscles and veins are readily visible. Of course, the face projects the image of Willie Migl!

All of the talent, time, labor and materials were donated to the American Legion by Gene Mikulik. It was agreed, from the beginning, that the Legion would construct an appropriate site to place the sculpture.

This site will also be used in future years as the stage from which the annual Memorial Day services are conducted. The design for this site is currently being developed by a committee of Legionnaires.

Everyone in the Flatonia area is encouraged to become a part of this special project. Contributions for the construction of the memorial site can be taken to the Flatonia State Bank or Fayette Savings. There will be a plaque on the monument dedicating the

Great Moravia: A Historical Background The ancient homeland of the Moravians and other Slavic tribes was located north of the Carpathian Mountains and south of the Baltic Sea. The western border of this territory was formed by the Elbe River and the eastern border by the Bug River. This land was inhabited by the ancient Slays, who until the third century A.D. formed a single tribe.

The ancient Slays referred to themselves as "Slovene." This name derives from "slovo," which means "word" in the Slavic languages. The Slays indentified race with language. A Slav was someone who spoke and understood the Slavic word. Along this same line of reasoning the Sla ys named their German neighbors "Nemci," which derives from the adjective "nemy" and means dumb. (Not able

to speak as in "deaf and dumb." -Editor's note.) For the ancient Slays, the neighboring Germanic tribes were unable to speak Slavic and therefore, in their mind, incapable of speech.

The Slavic languages belong to the Balto - Slavic branch of the Indo European languages. The modern Slavic languages share certain common elements and a period of common historical development with the modern Baltic languages, such as Lithuanian. The Baits were the closest neighbors of the ancient Sla ys, with whom they lived side - by - side quite peacefully.

If we examine the Slavic languages we find that after the Baltic languages, Slavic has most in common with the Germanic languages. The Germans, the ancient and traditional foes of the Slays, lived to the west and northwest of the Slavic tribes. The third major group with which the Slays shared ties of language, though to lesser degree than with the Baits and Germans, were ancient Iranian tribes which lived to the east and southeast of the Slays.

In a great migration of tribes which took place throughout Europe, Slays followed Germanic tribes which were migrating westward. Slay s settled as far west as the Elbe River. Numerous towns in modern East Germany were founded upon earlier Slavic settlements. The Polabian and Pomeranian Sla y s inhabiting the territories of modern East Germany were eventually annihilated by the Germans and the population and territories of the Slavic Sorbs (Wends) of Lusatia were greatly reduced.

While Slays in the west suffered greatly at the hands of Germans, Slays to the east fared somewhat better. In the 9th century the state of Kievan Rus' was founded by eastern Slavic tribes with the help of Scandanavian warrior - tradesmen. From this state emerged the modern nations of Ukraine, Russia and White Russia.

Croats and Serbs, who at that time inhabited modern Galicia, were invited

by Emperor Heraclitus (610 - 664) to settle on lands which today form Yugoslavia. The Slovenes of modern Yugoslavia were to be driven south and separated from their kinsmen, the Slovaks, by invading Magyars in the 10th century. Slays living between the Danube and the Balkans were organized into a political state by the Turkic Bulgars, who themselves assimilated into the more numerorus Slavic population. From the ancient Slavic homeland, the ancestors of the modern Poles spread out over the Oder and Vistula valleys. They received their name from "pole," which means field in Czech. Their land, modern Poland, resembles a great, flat field.

This migration of tribes took place between the second and seventh centuries. From a single Slavic tribe, the Slay s began to follow different paths of national and regional development. It was during this time that the ancestors of the modern Czechs, Moravians and Slovaks crossed the Carpathian Mountains and occupied their land.

The influence of geography upon the development of history as well as upon language is seldom remarked upon. This fact is quite evident in studying the Sla ys, however. The development of both Russia and Poland was influenced by the lack of natural boundaries found there. This allowed for frequent invasion from foreign lands, but it also allowed the unification of vast territories with scattered populations. Over vast stretches of territory in both Russia and Poland, the culture andlanguage showed surprising homogeneity. In

comparison with the smaller region of Moravia, where various dialects are spoken, it is surprising that Russian and Polish have so few dialects. We can note a resemblance between Slavic dialects which have developed and natural borders which somehow restricted communication between the Slays from the period of migration and settlement.

The influence of the Magyars in Slovakia can be partly explained through geography. When the Magyars arrived in the early tenth century, they displaced the Slavic populations from the fertile flatlands of what is modern Hungary. The Slays fled northward towards the Carpathians (and southward, in the case of the Slovenes). No physical boundary separated the Slovaks from the Magyars and each nation was strongly influenced by the other. Had the Carpathian Mountains been located south of Slovakia, it is likely that a powerful state would have developed between the Poles and Slovaks.

The region of Moravia takes its name from the Morava River, which stretches southward across the region and flows into the Danube near the Austro - Moravian border. The prefix "mor-" signifies water and the word "morava" referred to water or a river.

Another Morava River is found in Yugoslavia.

Before the arrival of Sla ys, Moravia was inhabited by Celts, Avars and other tribes about whose history we know little. From probably the late fourth century, the lowlands and valleys along the Morava River were inhabited by Slavic tribes. In culture and language these Sla ys were nearly identical to the other Slavic tribes which were migrating through other parts of Eastern and Central Europe.

Yet differences in folk culture as well as speech began to develop as soon as the tribes in Moravia began to establish settlements. Archeologists believe that the ethnographic divisions of modern Moravia (i.e. the regions of Hana, Slovacko, etc.) correspond to tribal differences which distinguished the early Slavic settlers of Moravia.

The territory of Moravia existed as a political unit from the early ninth century A.D. It was Prince Mojmir (822 - 846) who united the Moravian tribes. The early Moravians were menaced by the Avars, a Turkic tribe from Asia settled on lands bordering the Moravians. In the eighth century tribal chieftans among the Moravians consolidated their power and united the Moravians against the common Avar enemy. A report from the year 822 states that tribes in the Danube valleys and near the Morava and Thaya Rivers accepted the supremecy of the most important of the local Slavic tribes, the Moravians.

The Moravians inhabited a territory encompassing modern Moravia and extending southward to the Devin Pass and eastward to the White Carpathians. The Moravians were in close contact with the neighboring Slovaks. Under Mojmir Moravian territory was expanded to the east to include Slovakia. Mojmir's neighbor, Prince Pribina, was driven from his seat at Nitra, Slovakia between 833 and 836 and this territory was annexed to Moravia. In the south Mojmir extended his territory to the area between the Danube and Dyje Rivers in modern - day Austria.

Under Mojmir's successors Rostislav (846 - 870) and Svatopluk, Moravia's borders expanded to include Bohemia, all of Slovakia, Lusatia and parts of Poland. The Great Moravian state was bordered by the Frankish

Empire in the west, by the Bulgars to the southeast and on the south by Pannonia, parts of which also fell under Svatopluk's rule.

Archeological research in recent decades has uncovered much to teach us about the history of Great Moravia.

Numerous settlements, strongholds and burial grounds discovered attest to the wealth and cultural development of the Moravians. Gravesites have yielded artifacts of gold, silver and bronze.

The number of artifacts discovered at Moravian sites is unsurpassed by that of any other Slavic archeological find, garments of linen, leather and fur have been discovered, as well as silken and woolen fabrics. Many of the artifacts were imported to Moravia and thus attest to the commercial relations which existed between Moravia and foreign trade centers.

The history of the Sla ys is closely related to that of their Gemanic neighbors, with whom they have lived in unfortunate conflict since ancient times. The Germans came into contact with Western civilization earlier than the Sla y s. It was through German intermediaries that much of Western culture was imparted to the Sla y s. The Slays paid a heavy price for this bequest, however.

Mojmir enjoyed friendly relations with the neighboring Franks. During Mojmir's reign Christianity had already penetrated to Moravia, as is proven by the existence of early Christian churches dating from that period. Mojmir allowed Frankish missionaries to proselytize in Moravia, where missionaries of Greek and other nationalities were also at work.

Upon the invitation of Moravian ruler Rostislav, the Slavic - speaking missionaries Cyril and Methodius arrived in Moravia in 863. This mission resulted in the Christianization of the Sla ys inhabiting Great Moravia and, subsequently, spread to other Slays beyond Moravia. It is interesting to note that the Sla ys first accepted Christianity in its Eastern rather than Western form. Mojmir understood well that German missionaries had political as well as spiritual interests at heart. As their political power grew in the West, the Germans played an increasingly important role in the Western Church. Germans were responsible for much of the dogmatism evident later in both and Catholicism Roman so which came Protestantism, naturally to the German mind but which confused and revolted Christians of the Eastern Church.

Some Slays refused to accept the Germans' Christianity and thus perished under the swords of Crusaders.

Cyril brought with him to Moravia a new alphabet which he had invented and which ideally suited the particular sounds of the Slavic speech. This was the ancestor of the modern Cyrillic alphabet used today in the Soviet Union, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia. Cyril and his disciples began the translation of scripture and sacred books to the new written language. After Cyril's death in Rome in 869, this work was continued by his brother, Methodius.

The Moravian capitol was located at Velehrad. There is some argument about the exact location of ancient Velehrad, but many scholars believe the site to be near the modern - day town of Stare Mesto in Southern Moravia. As is proven by numerous archeological discoveries, Southern Moravia, with its relatively mild climate and productive agricultural areas, formed the heart of Great Moravia.

In 907 Moravia was overrun by invading Magyars from the steppes of Asia. It appears that the Magyars, with their unique style of warfare, took the Moravians quite by surprise. The Moravians were more concerned about defending their western borders against the Germans. Great Moravia's political structure had already been weakened through German intrigue.

After the Magyar invasion Moravia was left without a political administration. The Germans had long sought to banish the Slavic clergy and their Slavic liturgy from Moravia.

Methodius' successor as bishop, his disciples and the Slavic clergy fled to Bulgaria and other Slavic lands, where Slavic Christianity flourished and spread to other lands. Although most of Moravia's population survived the Magyar invasion, those of the administrative class and clergy who did not flee were killed. Velehrad was razed.

While Bohemia had formed part of Great Moravia, it was not devastated by the Magyars like Moravia. In about 955 the Bohemian Prince Boleslav I joined Moravia to Bohemia. In 1003

Bohemia and Moravia were united with Poland by Boleslaw, the Brave of Poland. Although Bohemia regained independence after two years, Moravia remained joined to Poland for nearly three decades. Geography and cultural factors dictated that Moravia would naturally follow a similar political development as neighboring Bohemia.

While Moravia's development was not identical to that of Bohemia, both territories would share much in the way of historical, political and cultural development.

Moravians never forgot about the past glories of Great Moravia. It was there that Sla ys were first united by a written language, that Slavic literature was born and that Slavic Christianity first flourished. Great Moravia was the first great Slavic state and their ancestors of different modern Slavic nations lived in peace and prosperity.

In the minds of Moravians was a pinnacle of political and cultural achievement which has never again been matched among the Slays.

—SPJSTIf it looks like a car and hauls passengers like a car, it's a car, right?

Maybe not. Under a new Treasury Department reclassification, many imported sport - utility vehicles, that once were called "cars" are now "trucks." The matter involves more than semantics. Trucks carry a 25 percent import tariff, 10 times the 21/2 percent duty on cars. Auto - industry analysts estimate that the tariff, retroactive to January 4, will add $2,000 to $2,500 to a dealer's cost for affected models. But over all, prices aren't expected to climb significantly.

One reason is that many foreign auto makers already are paying the higher tariff by exporting their sport - utility vehicles as trucks to get around import quotas on cars.
