The back page of this issue has a list of dates of sales seminars being held in our districts for instruction and information for our sales representatives. These seminars are held in compliance with the requirements for sales personnel to be qualified to better serve our membership. All of our sales representatives are to attend two three - hour seminars per year at least.

Please attend the one most convenient for you. *** Remember your district meetings beginning with District II at Lodge No. 187, Round Rock and District V at Lodge No. 172, Pasadena, both on March 12th, District I at Lodge No. 186, Caldwell and District VI at Lodge No. 30, Taiton, both on April 9th, District III at Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood and District VII at Lodge No. 133, San Antonio, both on April 16th, District IV meeting on April 23rd with Lodge No. 157, Lubbock hosting the event. It is every member's obligation to take interest in your organization and this will be a good opportunity to voice your opinion on what you feel should be asked at these meetings. Be active! *** Some time ago this column carried an article titled "From small beginnings, etc." and this is a case of this being true. In 1979, Brother Jack McClure of Sokol Zizka, Dallas contacted your editor to see if Sokol gymnastic program could be re activated in West. He mentioned that he had contacted some business men in West, however, they were not too enthusiastic and, therefore, he was turning to this writer, who was not too sure of the outcome, but would try.

A meeting was called and the Sokol idea was explained plus the Sokol (Falcon) motto: "Within a healthy body is a healthy mind." The idea caught on and, now in 1989, there is a brand new gymnasium erected next to SPJST Lodge Jaromir No. 54 and Sokol West "Lone Star" Hall at 1200 North Davis in West. It was built with the support of the SPJST Society, Westfest, the $10,000 gift from Brother and Sister Jos. Holasek (member of SPJST Lodge No. 36, West and also a longtime Sokol member), plus the giant share of the workload by Brother Raymond Matus and his wife, Lil, and the support of the entire community.

Sunday, March 5, 1989 is the official dedication and open house beginning at 11 a.m. with a roast beef, vegetables and dessert noon meal plus ribbon cutting at 2 p.m. A brief program will follow with arrangements being made

by Southern District Sokol President Larry Laznovsky (an active SPJST member of Lodge 135, Ennis, also a very productive sales representative from Ennis), to be followed by Sokol gymnasts performing their gymnastics for all in attendance. The parents of these Sokols are to be congratulated and, of course, the instructors as well.

We say: "Nazdar to all!" The public is cordially invited. All of us are hoping for perfect weather. *** If you ever built a house, you know that it takes a lot of time, a lot of

organization and a lot of patience to get the thing finished, and done right.

The builder optimistically assured you that you would be in your new home

by June. But June passed and so did July, then August. And even when the summer ended, you had not moved. So much had to be done!

First the excavation and the laying of the foundation. This must be four square and level. Then the raising of the structure, putting on the roof, laying the floors, fitting the windows and doors -- and so much more -- all must be done right.

Building a career is much like building a house. Each must have a sound foundation. In life underwriting, that means having a clear, working knowledge of the elements that make up life insurance.

Plus a general idea of how they are put together.

The successful underwriter needs not be able to figure rates; there are plenty of actuaries to do that. So he doesn't need to be able to recite the exact formula, for instance, for determining the premium on a policy. But he should know that rates are based on precise and well - defined mathematics. Then he can adapt this knowledge and translate it so that the prospect will understand the fairness and the value of the principles involved.

To illustrate the translating of insurance terms, I recall the experience of a young underwriter. A policyowner complained: "I have paid your company over $18 every year for 10 years on my ordinary life policy, and now your company offers me only very little for it. Why is that?"

The reply was a fine example of explaining an actuarial principle in words that the average layman can understand. He didn't attempt to go into the costs of putting the policy on the books, or trying to explain the relation of the reserve to the death rate and compound interest. Here is what he said: "The reason is the same as the reason that the Lord made little apples green -- so that you won't eat them until they are ripe."

Let us go back to the analogy of building a home and building a career.

What would you think of a man or woman who, when they had the foundation laid for a new home, would leave that unfinished structure -- leave it and go away to another field and start another house?

Yes, I have seen just that, time and time again. They lacked the courage and perseverance and faith to see the job through. And think: All the time, money and planning -- all the optimistic hoping -- all gone down the drain. And worse! For something deplorable, something truly tragic, happens to the inner soul when one surrenders because the going get rough. Once one surrenders -- once, when he accepts failure -- it's so much easier to surrender again, when the job isn't even as hard. After a little, there is developed a weak, spineless person.

It is our wish that if there is anyone reading this who is thinking of surrendering, he will take a second look at the house he has started to build. Look at the structure going up.

If one surrenders a house, there can be some salvage. But when a career is surrendered, little or nothing can be saved.

Review again the plans you have made. Your hopes and dreams can still be realities. And as you gain courage to carry on, so you will have still greater courage and increased strength to overcome all the trials of all the future years.

District V Meeting Dear Members: We officers want to remind you that our district meeting will be at Lodge No. 172, 3609 Preston, Pasadena on March 12th. There is a lot of enthusiasm at Lodge No. 172, and they all are hoping that you are planning to come!

At 12 noon there is a "Social" with refreshments donated by the district.

The dinner starts at 12:30 p.m. The district furnishes meat, and each family is asked to bring a covered dish (casserole, salad or pastry). Lodge No. 88 Choral Club, with Tim Kostom directing, will entertain us with beautiful songs during the noon hour.

The meeting starts at 2 p.m. Some highlights of the meeting are: memorial service, recognition of 50 year members, a short youth program, and election of officers. Ten door prizes of $5 will be given at the end of the meeting.

Following the meeting is a "Social" when you can enjoy the popular "Czech Heritage Accordian Band," more free refreshments and the fellowship of members! If you like, you can enjoy dancing.

So do try to come to Lodge No. 172 on the second Sunday in March for an enjoyable day. By attending you will show that you are active in this great fraternal organization. Recognition will be given to all sales representatives and convention delegates.

To Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood Members/Friends Notice

Our next regular Lodge No. 6 meeting will be held Sunday, March 12th beginning at 1 p.m., and our Board of Trustees' meeting on Friday night, March 3rd at 7:30 p.m. With this lodge meeting, we will celebrate our Easter Party; after the meeting, there will be a short youth program and following will be an Easter egg hunt for all youngsters present for same ages, as usual, with prizes given in each category. After all of these activities, supper will be served to all members and their families.

With this celebration, we will also honor all our 50 - year members who will be recognized this year during 1989. We have 9 longtime members who have favored us with their support. This is a special invitation to all of them to attend. We hope they will and can come to receive their 50 year pins, which will be given to them by our lodge president.

Since time is passing so fast, maybe now would be the time to start thinking if the sisters would like to enter a quilt contest that will take place at the District III meeting, which will be held at our Lodge No. 6 on Sunday, April 16, 1989. We are also supposed to have a horseshoe pitching contest, so think about that, too.

We have on the sick list Sister Lydia Krizan of Melford, Oklahoma; she was in the hospital for several days convalescing from a slight stroke and now she is in the Melford Rest Home. I think she would enjoy hearing from some of our members, relatives and friends; her address is Melford Nursing Home, Melford, Oklahoma 73757. (I wish her a very happy birthday on March 6th.) We also have another sweet member, sister and Aunt Katie Krizan who is in West Rest Haven here at West; she, too, would enjoy your visit.

Dear Members: Lodge No. 17 held its regular monthly meeting on February 12th (due to ice, we were a week late) with all officers present with the exception of Susan Skrabanek (due to illness of her son), FAC Bud Petty (work) and Hall Manager Gladys Hejl (illness).

Martha Trcalek reported that letters had been mailed for local dues. She has gotten some back. Even though you have a full year to pay them, it is better to get your dues paid so you won't forget about them; you have to pay your local dues to enter the different lodge supported events.

Our local "Straight" Domino Tournament was held on February 11th and Charles Petty and Randy Gaas won first place, Glen Paul and Donnie Paul won second place. They will represent Lodge No. 17 at the State Tournament.

Plans will be discussed pertaining to our local lodge "42" and "Straight" domino tournament eliminations, also set date(s) for those who are, especially, interested in participating, therefore, let us hear from you and be present at this meeting to voice your opinon.

Dear Members: For some unknown reason, Lodge Karel Jonas' 90th Anniversary was forgotten last year. To remedy this, this year in the March monthly meeting, the first Sunday, the 5th, there will be an observance of the 91st anniversary of the March 19, 1898 chartering. Along with this, the birthdays of members present who had birthdays in February and those who have birthdays in March will be remembered and honored. At 2 p.m., the agenda will follow the regular "Order of Business" and will have many reports of which some were scheduled for the canceled February meeting. Two reports scheduled are the annual Audit Committee report and a Special report on the pending SPJST tournaments that might be of interest to the membership. Any new business needing immediate attention will be taken care of. For clarification, the February 5th monthly meeting was officially canceled at 12 noon of that Sunday due to the "Alaskan Express" ice storm, up to 11:30 that morning

there was still some conversation in favor of convening the meeting.

There will be a fraternal gathering and luncheon after the business meeting, as always.

Lodge No. 47, Seaton Dear Brothers and Sisters: President Jerry Pechal called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 12, 1989, postponed to second Sunday due to cold weather on the 5th.

Flag Bearers Lori Greger and Erin Skrabanek brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing in tribute to the memory of Brothers Ted Blankenship of Temple, Johnny E. Kovar of Hutchins, and Sister Binnie Simek of Houston who passed away recently. May these departed rest in eternal peace and we express deepest sympathy to the surviving families.

Visitors Ann Balusek, Gertrude Kahlig, Freddie Schroeder plus 80 members were welcomed by President Pechal.

In the absence of Secretary Dolores Skrabanek, Dorothy Pechal read the roll call of officers, trustees and sales representatives. Secretary Skrabanek was the only officer absent. Brother Calvin Skrabanek was the trustee absent and two sales representatives, Anton Motl and Dolores Skrabanek, were absent.

Minutes of the January 8th meeting were approved after corrections of the Family Night being on the regular date and Anton Motl had a birthday instead of Anton Vitek.

Correspondence included letters from the office of Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar regarding the Officers' Workshop on February 25th at our lodge; the Fraternal Activities to be filled out and sent back and also about the Tarok Tournament to be held Saturday, March 4th at our hall; a thank you card from the John V. Schneider family for flowers sent to the funeral; also names of 15 members to receive 50 - year pins.

New members accepted into the lodge were Paul Edward Russell, Sherry Lynn Russell, Michael Joseph Sodek and Daniel Lawrence Trampota. Transfers in Lodge 47 from Lodge 24 were Sharon Ann Hejl, Sarah Lynn Hejl and David Ray Hejl.

A warm welcome to each of these named and thanks for choosing our lodge to belong.

On the sick list were Brothers Jerry Pechal and Leo Kahlig. Get well wishes to these plus others we may not know about. This week Sister Theresa Chlapek and Brother Bill Havlik were hospitalized.

President Pechal stated the Saturday dance last week and lodge meeting were canceled due to extreme cold weather and rescheduled for today; thanks to George Pavelka for announcing it on the Polka Show. The local "Straight" Domino Tournament was held Friday night, "42" will be held on March 31st and State Tarok Tournament on Saturday, March 4th with a meal to be served by the lodge.

The leak in the hall needs immediate attention. Brother Pechal thanked all for the visits, cards, flowers and prayers while he was in the hospital.

4/VESTNIK—Wednesday, March 1, 1989 First Vice President George Pavelka reported on the one - day license for social games at the June 4th Picnic.

Second Vice President and FAC Tim Reese reported that 12 members participated and Brothers Dan Hejl, Eugene Hejl, Joe Jim Kohut and John Kohut will represent Lodge 47 in the "Straight" Domino Tournament on March 25th. He thanked Sister Dorothy Pechal for the room to use, Ann Hejl and Charlie Sirney for being judges, Dana Glaser for collecting the money, Henry and Helen Janacek for opening up and serving drinks and Judy Pechal for the cake. The "42" Tournament will be at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 31st and participants are to bring a covered dish to share with others. The three - lodge Tarok Play was held Saturday, February 18th at New Tabor with 12 from each lodge with possibly a children's table in the future. The State Tarok Tournament will be at Seaton Star Hall on Saturday, March 4th with about 100 players with Sister Lucy Mihatsch, the kitchen chairperson to have a delicious noon meal at a nominal price. The Youth Club members will be selling sweets. Kolache and coffee are to be served at 9 a.m. during registration.

Sister Lucy Mihatsch gave her report and Sister Adeline Kohutek reported on her monetary sums and the members' status.

Chairpersons' reports were given and all were good.

Brother Willie E. Kohutek stated that the Fraternal Report is of utmost importance and excellent records are needed. Sales representatives will be required to attend sales seminars in District II and in other districts, too.

District II spring meeting will be held on Sunday, March 12th in Round Rock SPJST Lodge No. 187.

Board minutes were read by Brother Wallace Jez. Brother Frank Klinkovsky told of the Tarok Tournament at our lodge and plans that are needed to be complete.

Under new business, we voted to honor the 50 - year members receiving 50 - year pins on Sunday, April 2nd at 2 p.m.; also the Easter egg hunt will be held the same day for our youngsters.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky reported that 31 members, 4 visitors plus 5 adults were present. A new member, Sarah Hejl joined. The District II Skating Party was held February 19th at Skate Haven and Valentine treats were brought to Burmont Nusing Home. Their fund raiser will be held Friday, March 3rd beginning at 5 p.m. Stew and hot dogs will be served; later games will be played, a cake walk, a door prize drawing and auction will be at 7:30 p.m. Angela Pechal, David Koslovsky and Mark Greger had February birthdays. Door prize winners were Joshua Smith and Heath Novosad.

Everyone is invited to the Fund Raiser.

The matter of our lodge going on "Direct Billing" was brought up. A discussion followed with a vote by secret ballot following. Sisters Lillie Mikulas, Ruby Bolton and Dorothy Pechal tabulated the votes with Frank Janacek and Woodrow Marek assisting. The voting results were for Direct Billing -- 35 and against -- 38 votes, so we will stay with collecting being billed by our Lodge 47 financial secretary.

Door prize winners were Emily Stuteville and F.E. Hejl, Jr. Birthdays in February will be observed by Brothers Eugene Hejl, Wallace Jez and Freddie Schroeder and Sisters Vallie Tupy, Lillie

The first quarterly meeting of 1989 for Lodge 54, West will be held in Lone Star Hall at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 12th. Make notice of this change of date meeting due to Sokol West having their new building dedication on March 5th.

The meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m. by President Mary Alice Langlotz.

The flags were presented by Ashley Locke and Jesika Tierce. The pledge and lodge motto were led by Alicia Neslony.

Members stood in a moment of silence for deceased member, Harold B. Copeland.

Sister Shilling called the roll of officrs; all were present except Secretary Bonnie Pruitt who just got home from the hospital. Hope she gets well soon.

Sister Leona Nors read the minutes of our previous meeting; they were approved.

Sister Mary A. Langlotz read a thank you note from Arthur Langlotz.

Sister Darlene Engelke read the names of members who will receive their fifty - year membership pin.

There was a discussion to honor them at our March meeting dinner.

Sister Jeanette Smith read the minutes of the board meeting and they were approved.

Sister Locke reported for the Entertainment Committee. For our March 19th meeting, we will serve fried chicken and members are asked to bring salads and desserts. For the Straight Domino Tournament dinner, which will be held at Linden Hall on March 25th, we will serve doughnuts and coffee in the morning and dinner will be boxed chicken, dessert, coffee and tea.

Sister Locke sent get well cards to Ellanora Busch, Bonnie Pruitt and Arthur Langlotz.

Sister Libbie Parma reported for the Trust Fund. The fund had received a donation in memory of Harold B. Copeland from SPJST, also for Arthur Langlotz.

Sister Gladys Yates reported for the Youth Club. They will have an Easter egg hunt at the March meeting; they will also be going bowling, skating and to the movies and each member will have a choice.

Sister Jeanette Smith reported on the Fraternal Activities. She has purchased the horseshoes for the hall, so they may start practicing for the District III meeting. She also asked the Tarok players to sign up if they want to play in the tournament. The Straight domino playoff is now in progress every Monday at 7 p.m. The "42" domino playoff will start Monday, March 13th at 7 p.m. at the hall; if interested, contact Sister Jeanette Smith.

Sister Emma Ceska reported on the District III meeting which will be held in Cottonwood Hall, April 16, 1989.

There will be a horseshoe tournament and a quilt contest which will be held at this meeting, so be sure to attend.

Our Lodge 66 meeting has been changed to Sunday, April 9, 1989 at 2:30 p.m.

Door prize winner was Leo Klemitchek.

Members celebrating a birthday in February were Jamie Williams, Amanda Neslony, Ray Orsag and Bennie Engelke. The birthday cake was brought by Justin Engelke.

Dear Members: SPJST Lodge No. 87 held their regular meeting Friday evening, February 10th at 7 p.m. with President Ladis Navratil presiding.

The meeting was called to order.

Flag Bearer Ed Reisner led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and deceased members were remembered in silent tribute.

Minutes of our previous meeting were read and approved as read.

Various reports were given, and old and new business was discussed.

Mary Ann Zatopek reported the following new members were accepted into our lodge, namely, Ernest W. Bachus and Paul Clifton Boyd.

Additional insurance was for Nicolas K. Henry. A warm welcome is extended to these new members.

Our lodge is proud to announce that seven (7) of our members will receive their 50 - year membership pins in this calendar year 1989. They are Betty Jane Engbrock, Viola Evelyn Jezek, William J. Matush, Lillie Emma McDonald, Georgia Ann Navratil, Barney T. Sissom and Edwin J. Tyroch.

The next meeting will be Friday evening, March 10th at 7 p.m.

Ed and Florence Reisner will host our next meeting for the social hour. It was announced that pizza will be served for refreshments.

Lodge No. 88, Houston News On February 13th, Lodge 88 had a monthly meeting with a very nice crowd attending. It was a long evening, although it didn't seem that way; however, we had an extra special event; Tim Kostom, who was selected by the Supreme Lodge as the Fraternalist of the Year 1989, was highlighted by his. Lodge 88, which he has supported in many ways -- too numerous to name, for 61 years. Tim is a dedicated fraternalist and has been nearly all of his life. Tim, who is 85 years of age, has never turned down a job under any condition. Whenever the Men's Club, of which he's a faithful member, has a big job to do -here is Tim with tools and screws or whatever, and takes hold of it like a middle - aged person. It's amusing and amazing to watch him perform. One night recently, I observed this myself, a younger man half Tim's age pointed to the ceiling and said "Tim, we need a bulb in that fixture." Immediately, Tim looked around for a ladder, but someone said; "You put it up there."

Then after many years of living alone, Tim fell in love with Rosalee Hanus Ruland, who has been a wonderful companion for 21 years, and has been a pillar in his later life.

They have traveled to many countries, and always report to their many

friends about the beautiful time they had. I believe this statement and many of you readers agree with me that -"Behind a good man is a good woman."

We are so proud of Tim, who is so deserving of the best.

Rosalee had ordered a big birthday cake for Tim and Tom Jecmenek who had their 85th birthday, and since Amos Kadlecek had a birthday on the same day with Tim, although he's only 75 years, his name was included on the cake which was served after the meeting. We really had a night of festivities. We missed Amos who was unable to be there.

The other night a very proud and grandmother, Josephine happy handed me this Pflughaupt, information about their granddaughter Cathy L. Goedeke. The title was "Outstanding High School Student of America." Cathy is the daughter of Carol A. Globke of Spring and Ken T. Goedeke of Houston, and the granddaughter of Leander and Josephine Pflughaupt. Cathy J. Goedeke, as a new inductee, will be listed among the top high school students across the country in the Outstanding High School Students of America Directory. This directory is distributed to many of the nation's colleges, universities and corpo,rations to ensure our members the national recognition they deserve. She's also a candidate for several scholarships including ten $2,000 scholarships available only to OHSA members.

My personal comment to Cathy is that she is intelligent like her mother Carol, who was Ernie Hanka' s secretary at one time, and he was so pleased with her work. You are wished the very best. You've made the first rung of the ladder, so keep it up -- one rung at a time.

Carolyn Antrich Morse from California, daughter of Milert and Evelyn Antrich, surprised her parents with a visit and also a birthday cake for Evelyn, her mother. Milert and Evelyn have four daughters Carolyn and Judy who live in California, Victoria who lives in Azle, Texas and Genevieve who lives in Houston; only two of the daughters were able to be here for the celebration and the big surprise was when Milert handed her a bunch of beautiful red roses. Evelyn, Milert is a pretty good fellow, isn't he?

I was so surprised when I heard that Abner Dixon had a heart attack on December 16, 1988. He was in the Bellaire Hospital. After tests were made, he was taken to St. Luke's Hospital where he had a pacemaker implanted on December 23rd. He is at home now, still weak at times, but is doing well. Dorothy, his wife, will take care of him, I know.

Harley Cox and Royal Warnasch both had surgery at Southwest Memorial Hospital, and they are both doing fine. Irene Slovacek fell and is severely bruised; she's in ICU at Heights Hospital and so is Joe Ehler.

He had some kind of attack, but I haven't heard too much in detail. John Hilsher is in the La Grange, Texas Hospital, but presumably is back home now. Amos and Della Kadlecek have had a bad time, too, but are at home with their daughter Marian taking care of them. L.A. Mikes has been ill and we miss all these active members so much. We hope that all of you will be back in the "fold" soon.

Mrs. Jolly announced that the Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra will go to the S.P .J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville on Sunday, February 26th from 2 to 3:30 p.m. to entertain our residents there.

Our Youth Leader Barbara Linney has all the youth members'at Lodge 88 excited. Their San Antonio trip to Sea World is one of the main events coming up, and that is June 16th 18th. DYC Marie Stayton made arrangements with Lackland Air Force Base to house the kids at their barracks for a minimum rate. The youth members are making the money it takes on their own, which is always appreciated more than somebody just handing it to them. Other events are an Easter Party on March 18th, and to our Great Rodeo on March 4th at 11 a.m. and, in April, Mrs. Linney is planning a trip to the San Jacinto Monument.

President of the Men's Club Ed Miculka spoke for his club; they have been cleaning up the chairs, polishing the chrome, et cetera. They had planned on one work day for that, but it turned out to be three work days. It's a big job and many, many chairs, but they look so pretty. Now the ladies with those beautiful dance dresses won't mind sitting down.

Blue Room Manager Margaret Allbritton with Assistant Roy Stonaker reported that on April 2nd is the next big party. It will be one of the best. Willie Wehring will serve a menu planned by the committee, consisting of brisket barbecue and the trimmings.

I understand they are sold out; however, get your name on the waiting list because it's possibly that some who already have reservations may not be able to attend. Come out to eat, drink and dance to Henry Repka's music for $10 a person. It will be a gala affair.

On February 12th, we had our 24th Anniversary of the present Lodge 88 Hall. Willie Wehring cooked the braised beef and Annie Vala with some of the members prepared the rest of the food. The officers and sales representatives had a so - called "Wheel of Fortune." It was put on by Helen Hegwood and King B. assisted her, also Franklin Bravenec, Arnold Cmajdelka, Tom Marsh, Tim Kostom and Frank Tilich assisted. I think we'll do that again , since it was so successful.

Lillie Spies at the Birthday Club pastry booth did real well, too. We really appreciate all you good people who brought pastry.

The day concluded with a dance from 5 to 9 p.m. by Ray Jurecka's band from Weimar. To me this was like a family reunion because you get to visit with people you don't see very often.

Lodge No. 92 Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: I am sure that all of you were surprised that the winter didn't pass us up this season. That "Alaskan" cold front really did lower the temperatures all the way across Texas. Some parts had it worse than others. In our area, it was really bad because the roads were like an ice - skating rink and at least, it kept most people home and off the slick streets. Now, the rains are here which we need to help fill the tanks for cattle and to get soil ready for planting, but after so many days the sun will be most welcome and all we can do is talk about the weather; there is only one who controls that so we take it as it comes. This type of weather brought some type of sickness that is hard to get rid of. The doctors didn't know what some of it was, however, I hope those of us who were

sick are over it and back to normal routine.

Our regular meeting was well attended. The officers gave their reports which pleased everyone. The meeting started promptly at 2 p.m. because, after the meeting, a meal had to be over with due to the Valentine Dance which was to start at 4 p.m. The Youth Club was in charge of the meal that consisted of hamburger, chips and drink. Of course, our lodge pays for the meals and also pays the person who prepares the meal. Our Youth Club did a nice job of cooking the meat. They also sold hamburgers during the dance.

In our January meeting, we discussed those who attend the February meeting before 2 p.m. would get a free meal and also a free ticket to this dance. It was a rainy afternoon but that didn't keep members and friends away from the good dance which was played for by a very nice band, Henry Rejcek from Ennis, Texas. Their music was lovely and it kept people on the dance floor.

Eveyone always enjoys polkas and waltzes; they also liked the Colonel Sanders Dance number (Birdie or Chicken) fun dance. I took some pictures of the members who were at the meeting and 1 hope to have them in the Vestnik, soon.

In addition to these activities, there was a cake - decorating contest and there were lots of cakes to be judged to decide the winner. However, all were winners and the judges had a difficult time picking a prize cake. These cakes were decorated by young and old members. The winners were proud of their accomplishment they put into their work and came away happy.

Our lodge wants to thank all our friends who come to our dances and, especially, the ones from Dallas, Seymour, Wichita Falls and surrounding towns. We try to show all of them a good time and enjoy having them here.

Our game nights are getting ready for Tarok Tournament; we would like to bring the trophy to Fort Worth. We hope the weather cooperates with us for that day so all of us can go to Lodge No. 47, Seaton, Texas. Lodge No. 92 will be well represented. I would get a rabbit's foot for luck but that wouldn't be a good idea; the rabbit wouldn't think so, either. I wish all the members who will be in attendance, a full day of enjoyment and fraternal fellowship.

We have had several members and friends in the hospital with some type of surgery, namely, Sisters Clara Cohen, Anna Leshikar, Millie Waters and Margie Praslicka and Brothers Rudolph Wruble, Joe Zak, Stevens McClendon; also Elizabeth Gregory and Lad Maly. We wish them a speedy recovery.

Our Sunshine Lady Martha Durham does a nice job of sending birthday cards to members over 65 years of age, also cards to members and friends in the hospital as well as nursing homes.

I am sure most of you have seen the nice board on the left side of the stage that has names of deceased members who someone has made a donation in their memory. Members, as well as friends, can have a nice plate with their names. Also, on the right is a place that if you care to make a donation to the building, your name will be placed on it. This donation will be used to remodel or for some other purpose of our hall, only. The lodge appreciates all gifts to this worthy cause.

Kostom, we salute you for being the one selected for 1988. I have read about the nice things you are doing for the SPJST and want you to continue fraternal work. We are proud of all these lodges' fraternalists because all of you are winners in our hearts.

Don't forget to read the calendar section of the Vestnik about dances and other activities that are going on in your lodge. Please remember the March Dance sponsored by the KC Degree on March 18th from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. with music by The Czech Harvesters.

Then don't forget another dance for "KASH FOR KIDS" on Saturday, April 8th; this dance is for abused children and all proceeds over expenses go to this cause. More information will be written about this later, however, keep this date in mind. The music will be furnished by Jodie Mikula Band also from Ennis, Texas.

Make arrangements to be at this dance for a good cause on April 8th.

We haven't forgotten about the L,adies' Circle who meet every second Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. until ?? Don't forget their next meeting on March 14th; and our lodge meeting on Sunday, March 12 at 2 p.m. Good health to all of you!

Any Lodge 130 members who would like to learn the Czech dances are welcome to come out to the meetings and join in the practices.

Lodge 130 Youth Club is holding an open house on Sunday, March 12 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. All those youth who are interested in participating in the Youth Club arc invited, along with their parents, to attend the open house. We look forward to lots of fun and fulfilling activities this year for youth, so come out and support the Youth Club and see what we have to offer.

Lodge 130 extends its condolences to the families of our deceased members, Ella Bartos and Amalie Sulac. May God be with you in your time of sorrow.

News

SPJST members are known to be good cooks. This was proven again at our covered dish dinner before our monthly meeting held on Wednesday, February 22nd at 6:30 p.m. The table held Italian food, Mexican food, Czech food and American food such as shrimp and red sauce, plus different types of wonderful home - cooked pastries including bread. We all are looking forward to May 24th when this will be repeated.

President Alvin Sefcik opened the meeting with a welcome in Czech as always. A moment of silent rememberance followed in memory of our deceased members and, especially, our Brother Mike Tanecka. Mike is gone, but will never be forgotten by members of Lodge No. 172.

Lodge Secretary Lillia Mae Peter read the January minutes which included the annual report for 1988.

As always, the reports from the various officers and committee persons were encouraging.

Brother Willie Walla, our new trustee chairman, gave a report on the "Workers' Day" which was held Monday, February 20th. Two projects were completed; a new sign in front of our lodge was replaced, and our fire sprinkler system in the meeting room was revised to meet five code regulations. There are several other projects slated on the next work day, which is March 6th.

Our District V Director Louis Hanus and wife were our guests at this meeting and we want to thank him for his assistance during our work day. He also had a comment for each of the members who were present and took part in the workers' day; much of the work was completed before the rains came.

Again, remember the District V meeting on March 12th, to be hosted

by Pasadena Lodge No. 172. The day will begin about noon that Sunday,

with dinner at 12:30 p.m. and conclude about 4:30 p.m. with a short dance, music by the Czech Accordian Band of Galveston County. The lodge is furnishing meat, roast beef and sausage, but everyone is requested to furnish a covered vegetable dish or pastry, so March 12th bring an empty stomach and empty wallet because refreshments will be on the house.

We have booked two new bands -March 11th, "Family Tradition;" and March 18th, "The Texas Borderline," so if you enjoy dancing to fine country and western music, you will be delighted to hear these two bands.

There was no meeting on January 3rd because of icy weather.

Our dance attendance has improved this year, which we are very pleased with and we hope they will continue.

For our dance Saturday, February 25th, "Treadin' Water" furnished the music and on March 5th "Country Junction" will play for your dancing pleasure, so come out and enjoy it. Set - ups are free and the kitchen is always open.

Dear Members: Valentine's Day has come and gone for 1989. I hope your Valentine remembered you.

The February meeting is past; only a few members attended this meeting and several things were discussed to help the lodge improve and grow.

In March the sales representatives of Lodge 183 will meet and talk of ways to sell more insurance and increase the membership because the more members our lodge has, the more things can be done and more ideas on how to improve. This is one of the things that Lodge 183 needs now -- it is the input from you the members.

About three years ago, some of the members said Lodge 183 couldn't make it and a small group of members got together and did it. I now would quote a Chinese proverb: "Man who says it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it."

There is light at the end of the tunnel and it is time more members get involved and to commit themselves to SPJST fraternalism and Lodge 183.

Another anonymous quotation that comes to mind is: "The difference between bein g involved and being committed is like a ham and egg breakfast. The chicken is involved but the ham is committed.

There have been several good ideas brought up at meetings the last few years but we need someone to help carry out these ideas; that is where you, the members, can help by coming to meetings and taking part in helping our lodge and have the satisfaction of knowing you helped.

At the last meeting, Charlie Bragg won the $8 door prize and Bart Betick

lost $5 by not being there; you have to be there to win.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, March 12th at 5:30 p.m. I'll see you there.

The next lodge dance will be Saturday, March 18th with the Silverods Country - Western Band; come out and have a grand time.

Camp T-Shirt Design Contest Congratulations to all the youth club members who participated in the T - Shirt Design Contest. The competition was so stiff this year. We had 95 entries. That is 30 more youth than last year. The judges said that they had their work cut out for them in determining the winners. Each youth should be commended for taking the time to enter the contest. Leaders, please award each youth 20 points for participating.

Certificates will be sent to the youth leader through the mail.

The Tatra Monster "An Old Slovakian Legend" Many years ago in Old Slovakia a most terrible event took place in a beautiful valley at the base of the Tatra Mountains. Grandfather Vashko was a young man at the time. He was the strongest and smartest man in the valley and could outwork two men.

When he told about the TATRA MONSTER his voice was weak and hoarse.

It all started on a black and stormy night. It was near midnight, in between the crack of the lightning and the clap of thunder a most fearsome sound was heard above the pouring rain.

The roaring of the beast kept up all through the night. The people dis,:overed that many of their small o.nin-ials were gone. Night after night Lite monster came down to frighten the neople and consume whatever he could find. This did not work long for the people were very poor and soon could no-. buy animals to feed the monster.

mountain. As he approached the rock wall, the terrifying sound of the monster was so near, it sent a chill up and down his spine. As Vashko's lantern light fell upon the monster, he was alarmed at his size. The head was the size of a barrel. The creature was a dull purple color and had purple teeth.

The monster's eyes gave off a purple color and seemed to hypnotize Vashko. The monster opened his giant mouth and Vashko knew that one munch and he would be hamburger.

Just as the monster started for our hero, he got an idea. He took out a slab of bacon he had brou g ht with him. He picked up a rock trom the wall that served as a fence, he rubbed it very well with the slab of bacon, then he threw it to the monster. The monster was so hungry that he snat tiled it up with his mouth and one crunch. td.2 rock was gone. The bacon was smeared onto another rock and again the monster snatched it up, crunch, and it was gone. The District II Skating Party was held Sunday, February 19th. We had a fantastic attendance of 199 with 177 those being skaters. We are very proud to report no accidents. Lodge 6 Cottonwood Youth Meeting Dear Members and Friends, Valentine's Day is over and Easter is around the corner.

Our Valentine Party was held February 10th and it was well attended. We had a lot of food and the youth clubbers played games.

March 12th will be our Easter Party with the lodge meeting and also youth club meeting, along with an Easter youth program, egg hunt and supper following egg hunt, so everyone bring a salad or pastry. Members, also bring along a friend. Easter Bunny will have enough eggs for everyone. We hope to see all of you at our lodge, youth meeting and Easter Party.

The youth club went bowling on January 22nd at TSTI Campus Bowling Alley. All of them had fun including parents and I. Cakes were donated to West Rest Haven, clothes to Caritas, paper to Matallic Age Group, Campbell labels for St. Mary's and food to a needy family.

We need all our youth club members in the Easter program, so come and practice with us.

Our Youth Club will be having a fund - raiser on Friday, March 3rd at Seaton Star Hall. A meal consisting of either stew, drink and dessert or a hot dog, chips, drink and dessert will begin at 5 p.m. and continue until 7:30 p.m.

During this time, there will be games.

We will have a cake walk, dart throw, country store and a craft booth. An auction will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Donations of cakes, items for the country store or auction will be appreciated by mother lodge members.

We are all looking forward to this evening. This fund - raiser will determine the destination and plans of our overnight summer trip, so I know each of the Youth Club members will appreciate your support.

66, Waco Youth Valentine Meeting

Dear Members: The youth of Lodge 66 had their Valentine meeting on February 19th.

There were 20 youth members present.

The youth made Valentine boxes and they were judged. The youth then gave these boxes as door prizes. All of the boxes were beautiful and they were filled with various goodies. The judges were Ruby Orsag and Irene Mueller.

Thank you for your help.

Congratulations to each youth who participated in the contest.

The youth will be having a trip in March. You may go to one outing of your choice: Bowling at TSTI at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 13th; Skating, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 12th at Skatin' Place; or Movies at 7 p.m. on

February 28th at Shulman 5. All the youth are encouraged to attend the trip of your choice.

We will have an Easter egg hunt for all our youth at the March meeting; bring your Easter baskets and come have fun.

At the March meeting, all youth members bring are to bring Crayolas.

We are going to color Easter pictures and judge them.

30 Taiton Plans Egg Hunt

Dear Vestnik Readers, Our Youth Club meeting will be on March 5th at 2:30 p.m. at the Taiton Community Center. Since Easter falls on the last Sunday in March, we will have an Easter egg hunt after our meeting.

Each member is asked to bring some colored Easter eggs for the egg hunt.

Dear Vestnik Readers, A very big trip for the District V Youth Club is being planned. It's the `San Antonio Express Trip." Way back in the summer of 1988, the idea to go to Sea World started to emerge in the mind of our DYC Marie Stayton.

The trip first started out as a day at Sea World. Then, it moved on to spending the night following the Saturday at Sea World. Finally, everyone wanted to make it an all - out weekend trip to San Antonio.

The first concern in our trip to San Antonio, which took on the name of "San Antonio Express Trip," was to raise enough money. DYC Marie Stayton, along with her Assistant DYC Nancy Steubing, got together a Parents' Committee. In charge of the finances is Jo Ann Buri of Lodge No. 142. All the parents whose children are planning on going on the trip are part of the committee to help make it all a success.

One of the fund-raisers that has been on-going since the beginning of October is the kitchen sale in the Lodge 88 kitchen during the games on Thursday nights. We thank the Lodge 88 Board of Trustees for allowing Marie Stayton, with the help of the District V Youth Club, to open the kitchen at 6:30 p.m. every Thursday night. During the games, we sell hot dogs, cheese dogs, chili dogs, chili cheese dogs, frito pie, pizza, pickles, nachos and desserts. We thank those who have been supporting us in this fund - raiser, and we hope you continue to do so.

Another big fund - raiser the youth club has held was the garage sale November 19, 1988. There was a great help in donations of clothes, toys, and appliances. The youth were great in helping by making garage sale signs, posting them up, sorting out all the items, and helping keep things going that Saturday. The sale began at 9:30 a.m. and ended at 6:30 p.m. at the SPJST Lodge 88 back parking lot. The total earnings from the garage sale alone were $550.20 Assistant DYC Nancy Steubing found out about the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio that would possibly let us stay there for the weekend at $3 per person. Breakfast there is 75 cents a person and lunch and dinner are $1.50 each. Marie Stayton has sent off a form requesting to stay on the base June 16 - 18, 1989.

Mrs. Stayton has confirmation by the Air Force Base that we will be able to stay there.

Coming in March, the District V Youth Club is going to hold another garage sale for the trip. So far, there is $1,400 in the trip's account; hopefully, this garage sale will bring in as much as the other one did.

Ultimately, the youth club plans on taking a bus, which will cost us over $1,000 of the funds, to get to San Antonio on Friday, June 16, 1989. We hope to stay at the Lackland Air Force Base, which has some very nice things to do right there. The next day, Saturday, June 17th, we will be going to different places, especially Sea World. Then we hope to leave the Air Force Base Sunday, June 18th.

As many have probably read in our letters, the District V Youth Club is very excited about this trip. The biggest topic for this month has been "The San Antonio Express Trip".

Those youth who belong to a lodge in District V should notify DYC Marie Stayton whose number is on page 2 in the weekly Vestnik publication and tell her that you are interested in going; you will be required to attend or have attended a majority of the lodge adult monthly meetings and helped at the kitchen sales and/or other fund - raisers as much as possible.

I, as well as many others in the youth club, am really looking forward to the trip. We all have our DYC Marie Stayton and Assistant DYC Nancy Steubing to thank for getting everything going as it is now.

39 Bryan Youth Plan Events Lodge

Dear Readers, The Youth Club of Lodge 39, Bryan canceled their February meeting due to bad weather.

On February 19, 1989, at 3 p.m., we went bowling at Chimney Hill Bowling Alley for our social.

Melissa Havemann led the youth club, parents, and guests in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. All remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for peace and for the good of our members.

Next, we sang the SPJST Fraternity Song after reciting the Youth Club Pledge.

Secretary Michelle Linney then read the roll call of officers. President Darlene Migl, Vice President Crystal Wallace (who was a little late), Secretary Michelle Linney and Treasurer Marlene Migl were all present. Sergeant - at - Arms Kevin Faske and Reporter Paul Groendes were absent; only one committee chairman was present, namely, Tommie Wallace of the Refreshment Committee. Other committee chairmen who were absent are the following: Get Well Chairman -- Clint Vick, Membership Chairman -- Paul Pflughaupt, Refreshment Chairman -Wesley Faske, Scrapbook Chairman -Cindy Groendes and Social Chairman -- Brian Havemann.

Next, our secretary read the register.

There was a very good attendance, and we are very happy to see everyone's parents there. Parents who attended the meeting Wednesday were Jan and Gene Gloria, Cindy Havemann, Cheryl Michalak, Diana Sokol, Nancy Steubing and Jo Ann Clayton. We encourage everyone's parents to stay at the monthly meetings and find out what's going on with your child.

Then, Michelle read the minutes from the January 4, 1989 meeting.

There was one correction to the minutes. It was found by Crystal Wallace that the rodeo plans hadn't been decided on during the actual meeting, but they were discussed after the meeting by the officers and youth leaders.

There was no correspondence for the month of February.

Treasurer Marlene Migl then gave her report. She announced to all of us that there was a total of over $1,400 in the funds for the "San Antonio Express Trip."

We had no visitors and no new members attending our meeting Wednesday night.

Then, President Darlene Migl called for committee reports. All committee chairmen were absent, except Fund Raising Chairman -- Tommie Wallace who had no report at this time, it was announced that it has been found necessary to appoint new committee chairmen. Anyone interested was asked to sign up with an officer, preferably President Darlene Migl, or Youth Leader Barbara Linney before the meeting in March. The new chairman will be decided upon at the next meeting.

Next, we discussed many different things such as our socials and the District V kitchen sales on Thursday nights. Everyone had a chance to voice their opinions. We decided for each one to write down the social we would like to do. The results were in favor of going to Fame City; yet, it was said DYC Marie Stayton had thought of going there for a spring social.

Next, we discussed the rodeo. This year we will be going to see the Oakridge Boys on March 4, 1989 at 11 a.m. We are to meet at the lodge at 10 a.m. and leave for the Astrodome at 10:15 a.m. After the rodeo is over, we plan to go to the Livestock Show.

We also discussed Anniversary Day at the lodge for February 12th. The youth club planned to help clean the tables, etc.

Then, Gene Gloria announced and invited the youth to attend the Immanuel Lutheran School's Valentine Dance on Feburary 18th from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Another announcement was made by Crystal Wallace who is going for her Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. She is working on a clothes drive as part of her service project, and she asked for any donations from anyone.

Finally, we sang "Happy Birthday" to the fellowing February birthday celebrants, namely, Lindsey Michalak, Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl, Michael Williams and Paul Pflughaupt who was absent. Lindsey will be 11 on Feburary 5th, Darlene and Marlene will be 17 on February 24th, Paul will be 12 on February 23rd and Michael will be 9 on February 7th. Happy Birthday to all of you!

Then, around 9 p.m., the meeting was adjourned by President Darlene Migl. Our next meeting will be March 1 at 7:30 p.m. I hope to see you all there.

13 Dime Box Youth Meeting

Dear Readers, The Dime Box Youth Club held their last monthly meeting on February 19th at 12 noon. President Scott Whitsel called the meeting to order.

Secretary Trudy Krenek called the roll. There were 19 members present.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read.

Treasurer Jennifer Gold then reported our current balance. Jennifer reported we made $177 from our bake sale held on February 3rd. First State Bank of Dime Box donated $50 for our bake sale.

Under old business, we discussed our Adopt - A - Highway Project. Our next trash cleanup will be April 1st at 2 p.m.

There was no new business.

The meeting adjourned and we all enjoyed a chili dinner in honor of our parents. The members served their parents. It was enjoyed by all.

Features Sokol Charter Member Honored

Sister Frances (Gajda) Tirk was the recipient of a plaque and a bouquet of gladiolus by Brother Darrell and Sister Gaye Williams, honoring her dedication and long years of support and membership in Sokol Fort Worth, at the annual Sokol spaghetti dinner Sunday, January 29, 1989.

Sister Tirk was born May 31, 1900 in Kunovice, Czechoslovakia. She came

to the United States and Texas with her parents in 1912. She also holds membership in SPJST Lodge No. 92 and is the oldest member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Grapevine, Texas.

She met Anton (Tony) Tirk at a Sokol Picnic at Fort Worth in 1914 and, in 1916, they were married.

Brother Tirk (now deceased) also became a charter member of Fort Worth Sokol in 1914. He held the office of president of Sokol for 12 years.

Brother and Sister Tirk had four children -- the eldest, Lt. Colonel Anthony Tirk, Jr. who served with the 12th Air Force and was killed in action in 1944; Mrs. Lydia Alholm, next oldest and Joe Tirk, the youngest live next door to their mother in Colleyville and Mrs. Frances Matthews lives in Forth Worth. Sister Tirk has five grandchildren and four great grandchildren, and her sister, Sister Mary (Krupka) Botik.

Sister and Brother Tirk will always be remembered for the many years allowing the annual SPJST Lodge 154 and Sokol Picnics held on their farm that everyone always looked forward to. Now, her son - in - law and daughter, Brother Roy and Sister Lydia Alholm invite us every year.

Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 47, Seaton (Star), on behalf of our membership, express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother TED BLANKENSHIP, SR., who died in a Temple hospital Friday, January 27, 1989 at the age of 60.

Services were held Monday, January 30 at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Temple with the Rev. Ed Stewart officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery. Harper - Talasek Funeral Home of Temple was in charge of arrangements.

Firasek, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Firasek of Penelope, has completed an aircraft Pneudralic Systems Mechanic Course at Chanute, AFB, Illinois He completed a course in Crewchief University while assigned to 3246th Organizational Maintenance Squadron at Eglin AFB, Florida, where he is permanently stationed.

Benedict is a 1987 graduate of Penelope High School, and he is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 167, Penelope, Texas.

Mr. Blankenship had been employed

by Gresham's in Temple in sales and as a manager for 33 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Temple, Rotary Club, Junior Chamber of Commerce and Temple Sales Executive Club.

Survivors are his wife, Shirley Riney Blankenship of Temple; two sons, Ted W. Blankenship, Jr. of Albany and David Blankenship of Hamilton; two daughters, Ann Blankenship of Temple and Judy Sawberger of Irving; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Blankenship of Temple; a sister, Jo Ann Wickham of Middleton, Wisconsin and a grandson.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace and may his memory live among us forever.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the members of SPJST Lodge No. 161, La Parita, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother JOHN GABAYACH. He was born December 25, 1903 in Yorktown, Texas to Dominick and Susan Gabayach as the second child.

While a young boy he lived in Falls City. His parents moved to Atascosa County during his teen years and on to 1-owlerton, Texas where he spent all his life. He was a farmer who had a green thumb. In his garden, he planted and furnished vegetables for his family and friends all those years. It was stated that last year he didn't think he'd plant a garden, probably realizing his time was running out, but which he didn't want to admit to himself.

He never married but spent his time taking very good care of his grandparents. His niece stated that his grandfather was blind 15 years, needing constant care. The niece stated he was faithful to his God, church, family and a host of friends. He will be greatly missed in the family circle, but will know he is happy in the presence of our Lord.

He is survived by one brother, Frank Gabayach of Snowflake, Arizona; one sister, Eola Hardcastle of Fowlerton, Texas and many nephews and nieces plus many friends.

He entered rest on January 22, 1989 in Frio Medical Center in Dilley, Texas. Interment was in the Cotulla Cemetery.

In Memoriam Memorial services for ELLA MARIE BARTOS were held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1, 1989, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

She was born June 14, 1905, the daughter of Harry Heitman and Mary Machala Heitman in Galveston, Texas.

She married V.T. Bartos on 19th of July, 1923. They were lifelong residents of Dallas.

She worked for many years for Neiman - Marcus, Volks and other ladies' ready - to - wear stores. She concluded her career in the real estate business as a residential real estate agent.

She was a member of Circle of Czech Women, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and a founding member of Sokol Zizka. She was recently named an Honorary Life Member of the Sokol Athletic and

Fraternal Society SPJST Lodge 130 of Dallas.

Ella Marie Bartos was preceded in death by her husband, V.T. Bartos and two children, Jeanette Bartos Williams and Thomas Bartos. She is survived by her son, Jerry Bartos (a City Councilman); daughter - in - law, Candye Bartos; three sisters, Mildred Voss, Georgia Long and Vlasta Rezek of Dallas; six grandchildren, Mark, Paul, Marla, Sara, Julie and Mary Meghan Bartos and three great grandchildren, Alexander, Jessica and Justin Bartos.

It is not necessary to add an equivalent of "you", but it could be done and it is often done. Then, it is "dekuji ti" when we are close to the person addressed, or "dekuji Yam" if the relation to the person addressed is more formal.

The most common reply to the word "dekuji" is the word "prosim".

"Rado se stalo" and "neni zae" is used similar to "I was glad to do it," or "don't mention it," in this country.

Dovolte prosim — with your permission, (please) pardon me, (please) odpust'te (prosim) — excuse me, (please) promiiite (prosim) — I am sorry— pardon me nic se nestalo — it was nothing The word "prosim" is the most common courtesy word. The original is, "I beg you" and only from the context can you tell whether the word "prosim" means "I beg you" or whether it serves as "please".

"Prosim", shown above in parenthesis, because its use is optional, making it more polite.

The words "odpust'te" and "promifite" mean practically the same. The informal address would be "promiii" and "odpust" to be used only with those persons with whom you are on a "thou" basis. The "thou" and "you" basis sounds archaic in English, but there is an important difference in the relation between persons whom we address "thou" — in Czech "ty" — (the verb "tykati si"), and persons we address "you" — in Czech "vy" — and, therefore, the verb describing the relation is "vykati si."
