Annual Reports Of Supreme Lodge Officers And Directors
Howard B. Lesh ;ar
President's Annual Report for 1988 Dear Fellow Members: As we look with pride on a number of accomplishments for the SPJST Society in 1988, we realize that the following excerpt entitled "Silent Assets" might well have been written about you, our members. ..."When all is said and done, a company is little more than the sum total of the people, their talents, their loyalty, their dedication and concern these are the real assets a company brings to the competitive marketplace. These assets never appear on any balance sheet, for their value is impossible to measure. They bear no price tag, for they evade outright purchase. They are a company's Silent Assets and they must be recognized and nurtured, if they are to pay proper dividends." We, like the writer of these words, realize the importance of our members and their accomplishments. We know that without our members, lodge officers, sales representatives, district officers, youth leaders, editor, district directors, the officers of the Supreme Lodge and their staff, we would not be the strong viable organization that we take pride in. Financially, we continue to be the envy of many other financial institutions. As other reports will show, we have come through the downturn in the Texas economy in very fine shape. We look forward to
continued growth and stability. We will continue to search for ways to better serve our members' financial needs through quality insurance products, annuities, mortgage loans, and scholarships. Our Society, as all other Fraternals, has faced numerous challenges at both the State and Federal levels. Because the proposal for licensing of our sales representatives would affect us adversely, we have worked to defeat this bill. We were pleased that the Commissioner of Insurance withdrew his proposal for the licensing of sales representatives before the Texas Legislature convened. Since the Legislature is in session this year, we will continue to monitor the session very closely to insure that we have our input on any proposal that would affect our Society. At the Federal level, we are still awaiting a definite proposal by the Treasury Department regarding the taxation of Fraternals. Although the IRS and the Treasury Department have gathered extensive information on the operation of the seven largest fraternals, so far the results of their study have not been reported. These occurrences on the state and federal levels have made us aware that we must maintain a closer relationship with the public officials who can have an impact on our fraternal status. We ask that officers and members of each lodge make that extra effort to keep our state federal representatives informed of your lodge's involvement with and contributions to your community. Not only have these occurrences made us aware of the need to better report our fraternal activities, but they have also pointed up the need for focusing and expanding these activities. Local lodges continue to offer a wide variety of social opportunities within their communities. Many lodges offer planned events that emphasize the importance of heritage and family. Realizing the importance of these efforts of our local lodges, the delegates of our 25th Convention authorized the creation of a new position at the local and district level the Fraternal Activities Coordinator. These coordinators will help to emphasize the different activities and events that are occurring among the lodges in the district. At the state level,
we are pleased to announce that Frank Klinkovsky has accepted the position of Fraternal Coordinator. We welcome him, knowing that with his past experiences, he will be an asset to our Society. Our Tournaments continue to create interest among members and lodges across the state. Our most recent tournament, Volleyball, created much excitement. We were pleased to see the large turnout at all levels for this tournament. Again, in 1988, many lodges selected a "Fraternalist of the Year' to represent their local lodge at the state level. We are pleased to announce that Tim Kostom of Lodge 88, Houston, was selected 'State Fraternalist of the Year.' We congratulate Brother Kostom and thank him for his many contributions to the SPJST. The presentation of this award will be made on February 25th at the Local Lodge Officers' Workshop. Recently, the Supreme Lodge, after holding a special meeting on the Family Recreation Area, decided to ask the delegates for a nine - month extension to seek more information to complete the study of this project. The delegates granted this extension by a favorable vote of 33,172 for to 1,420 against. In the January meeting, the Supreme Lodge authorized the officers to visit the camps owned by other fraternals comparable to SPJST in size to gather the necessary information. Another exciting addition to our fraternal offering is the addition of a computer in the genealogy section of our museum. Museum Curator Thelma Bartosh stated that this will enable us to better serve our patrons and members who wish to research and preserve their family history. Again, in 1988, the Youth Department registered gains both at the local and state levels. Our State Youth Director Claudette Reese, the District Youth Counselors and Youth Leaders have created much interest with new projects and programs for youth in all ages. These programs have been designed to encourage our youth encourage them with an understanding of their heritage and to enable them to participate responsibly as citizens. It is gratifying to see youth mature and assume their rightful place in their lodges and communities. Also, as a result of the 25th
Convention, the Czech Language Grants, the 50 - Year Membership Pins and the Age 96 presentations were delegated to the Office of the President. Assisting with these programs is Secretary Barbara Wright (Assistant to the President). In conclusion, as we review our accomplishments and chart the course for the coming years, let us take stock of our real strength. Let us capitalize on all of our assets, the talents of our members and the financial strength of our Society. Let us continue to invest wisely in both the financial and fraternal areas. Finally, thank you for your confidence and encouragement. My family and I wish each of you a happy and prosperous 1989. Fraternally, Howard r . Leshikar —SPJST-
