Today's Thought...

Some people are in such a state of perpetual worry that the sight of a cheerful man upsets them.

Among the native Indians during the frontier days, fleetness of foot was a highly prized skill. The young boys, eager to attain speed and endurance would ask the older men of the tribe how to achieve their goal. The elder Sioux would tell them to go out into the prairies every summer and cover their hearts with the colorful dust from butterfly wings. (Any man who ever spent some time in the fields chasing butterflies during his youth, remembers what that meant.)

Naturally, the boys who caught butterflies summer after summer became the fastest runners.

If you aspire to be a "front runner" in life insurance selling, remember well the lesson of this brief story: You learn best by doing -- or, there is no substitute for activity in the field.

Enthusiasm is a wonderful word, but more -- it is a wonderful feeling. It is a way of life. It is a magic spark that transforms "being" into "living." It makes, hard work easy...and enjoyable. There is no better tonic for depression, no greater elixir for whatever happens to be wrong at the moment than enthusiasm. No person who is enthusiastic about his work has anything to fear from life. All the opportunities in the world...and they are as plentiful today as ever despite what people say, are waiting to be grasped by the people who are in love with what they are doing. *** The world today is looking for men who are not for sale; men who are honest, sound from center to circumference, true to the heart's core; men with consciences as steady as the needle to the pole; men who will stand for the right if the heavens totter and the earth reels; men who can tell the truth and look the world right in the eye; men who neither ,lag nor flinch; men who can have courage without shouting it; men in whom the courage of everlasting life runs still, deep, and strong; men who know their message and tell it; men who know their place and fill it; men who know their business and attend to it; men who will not lie, shirk or dodge; men who are not too lazy to work, nor too proud to be poor; men who are willing to eat what they have earned and wear what they have paid for; men who are not ashamed to say "no" with emphasis and who are not ashamed to say, "I can't afford it." ***

A true Army story. It has a good message. The mess sergeant was passing out dishes of apricots to the chow line. To say the least, the job was very boring, so he decided to experiment. He asked the next few men as they came by, "You don't want any apricots, do you?" And about 90 percent of them said, "No." (He was supposed to get rid of them.)

Meanwhile he tried a more positive approach: "You do want apricots, don't you?" Approximately, 50

percent replied, "Uh...yeah, I'll have some." The line was moving and he was not moving them fast enough.

However, he then tried a well known selling technique and started asking, "One dish of apricots, or two?" And in spite of the fact that soldiers are not supposed to like army apricots, (and they didn't) 40 percent took two dishes, and 50 percent took one.

Do you get the message? Give your prospect the right kind of choice, such as, "Do you wish to save $25 a month in our plan or would you rather double all of these benefits and save $50 per month?" *** Teenagers have a knack for wrecking up the family car, and so do the elderly. Drivers age 75 and over are second only to 16 - to -19 - years - olds in accidents per number of miles driven according to a non - profit group. But rather than hang up the car keys for good, the elderly can take courses that teach them how to compensate for reduced vision and dexterity by, for example, increasing following distance and taking more time to read signs. Courses are offered by the American Association of Retired Persons, the National Safety Council and the American Automobile Association. Each runs 8 hours and costs $5 to $35. Insurers in 24 states trim premiums up to 25 percent for older drivers who complete a course.

To nudge a dangerous older driver from behind the wheel, one can, in some states, challenge a parent's right to drive by petitioning the division of motor vehicles, which will, if warranted, give a driving test. ***

The fuss over the beef - import ban by the European Economic Community because of supposedly hazardous hormones obscures a genuine health risk. The tiny amount of growth hormones in beef is considered safe by the World Health Organization and the Food and Drug Administration. But antibiotics, commonly added to cattle and poultry feed to prevent disease and stimulate growth, may not be. The regimen breeds antibiotic - resistant strains of the bacteria that can cause salmonella and other illnesses. Additive - free beef and poultry are available, but such "clean meat" is costly. ***

Those who relish raw fish might wince at the news. Cases of anisakiasis, an illness caused by parasitic worms that may be present in some types of fish that are undercooked or used for raw - fish dishes such as sushi, are rising. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and an out - of - state university researchers say the worms are found most often in Pacific salmon and red snapper, Atlantic cod, haddock, tuna, flounder, herring, mackerel and squid.

The parasites cause a tickling in the throat and, if not expelled but swallowed, can burrow into the stomach within one to twelve hours.

They can cause pain, vomiting, fever and may require surgical removal, says one of the FDA's officials.

Approximately fifty people in the U.S. have suffered the illness, and experts stress that most fish is safe. You can spot the threadlike white worms by closely inspecting fish. After removing any you find, you can safely eat the fish. Chewing well should kill any hangers - on. At home, sushi chefs can safeguard fish by freezing it for seven days. ***

Lodge Jan ilika No. 18, Elgin Lodge 18 held its regular monthly meeting on January 17, 1989. Twenty five members attended the meeting.

Vice President Leslie Gustafson opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m.

Anton Mogonye led the assembly in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

The minutes were then read by Secretary Gilbert Kubicek. The minutes were approved as read.

Next on the agenda were reports from the other officers and committee chairpersons. All reports looked very favorable.

Under new business, President Kessel was approved as a new Sales Representative for our lodge. It is good to have him and Sue Brashar (recently approved Sales Representatives) join forces to increase our membership. We wish them the best of luck in this endeavor.

Since there was no further business to conduct, the drawing of door prize was next; this prize was, again, won by Brother Ervin (Lucky) Kovar.

The meeting was then adjourned with fellowship to follow.

Dear Members: Lodge Karel Jonas will convene its February monthly meeting at 2 p.m. the first Sunday, the 5th, in our lodge hall and will have a full complement of officers. The agenda, while following the regular "Order of Business" will have, along with the regular reports, some special reports scheduled and will consider any business needing immediate attention. It is urged that as many members be present as possible because one of the special reports is the Audit Committee report and along with this, it is a good possibility that a special guest may be present.

A luncheon and fraternal gathering after the business meeting is scheduled. At this time the Fraternal Activities Officer will discuss ideas that will brighten up these gatherings.

The January meeting was held on the second Sunday, the 8th. After all reports were given and accepted, and "Old Business" left over from the December meeting was taken care of.

A new motion was made and passed to supersede a motion made and passed in the December meeting which will NOW make the vice president and fraternal activities officer two offices instead of one. With the election of these two officers, this makes the lodge officers list complete for 1989. Starting with this writer being re - elected as president, the officers are: Vice President -- Sister Frances Haverda Secretary -- Sister Helen A. Kelner Treasurer -- Brother Albert Lupik Fraternal Activities Coordinator -A.J. "Tony" Kelner The Board of Trustees will remain the same as those who were on the board at the END of 1988. Also, this writer will remain the writer. The appointed offices were filled in the December meeting. There were several motions made and passed to take care of lodge business.

Sister Frances Haverda won the door prize.

With everyone who stayed in a relaxed mood, the luncheon was a success. Sisters Kortis, Polasek, H. Kelner and Nezval added a major portion to the items furnished by the lodge; adding to this were Brothers Lupik and A.J. Kelner, also. The A.J. Kelner family brought a large birthday cake for those who had birthdays in January. The three members who already had or will have birthdays who were present were Sister Polasek, Sister Nezval and Brother Lupik. By the way, Brother Lupik's birthday and the lodge meeting shared the same day this year. Another member who also has a birthday in January but cannot attend meetings because he is a "shut in" is Brother T.R. Heaphy, Jr. who sent something to be used for more than one luncheon via this writer.

Taking care of the cleanup were Sister H. Kelner, Sister Nezval, Brother Lupik and A.J. Kelner and, last but not least, a helping hand with setting up and clearing of the buffet table was that of young Jessica Kelner.

This writer mentioned in his last letter that he had asked himself the question "What is a good member?" and that he had planned to write more on this in this letter. Well, he found he had more questions than answers with some questions and answers doing nothing more than opening an extra large "can of worms." This dilemma caused him to come up with this set of criterion HE AND ONLY HE

THINKS are major points of being a good member: 1) A member who strives to better the lodge for the good of the lodge as a whole without excessive personal monetary gain; 2) Never feeling the lodge owes one something more than is actually given by this person to the lodge; 3) Has the personal satisfaction that one has done one's best for the lodge and was part of something; 4) Last, but not least, one who attends lodge functions (meetings, etc.) when one can, knowing that this helps the lodge and the fraternal process. It is understood when someone cannot attend these functions because of good and valid reasons but this too can bring up some questions.

This writer could expound further but knows this would just cause further questions and problems. Enough said.

This special note to all members who have loved ones laid to rest in the "Czech National Cemetery" of East Bernard. The first semi - annual meeting of the association for 1989 will be held on March 12th, the second Sunday, at 2 p.m. in our lodge hall.

No. 29, Taylor

SPJST Lodge No. 29, Taylor, met on Sunday, January 8th at 4 p.m. at the lodge hall. President Melvin Steger presided at our meeting.

Tammy Machu and Nikki Rieger, representing the Youth Club, presented the flag and led our members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing in a minute of silence for our deceased members, Joe Ed Betak, Leona Kincl, Henry J. Zak, Irene Sloan, Eugene Ripple and Frank J. Kincl.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read, the treasurer's and Property Committee reports were also given.

We had one applicant, Edward J. Loeve.

Elaine Machu reported 25 members attended the Youth Club meeting; for their activity, they will go to Highland Mall in Austin.

A motion was made that we host the Tarok Tournament at our lodge hall.

There being no further business, we adjourned, and will meet Sunday, February 12th for our next meeting.

The regular monthly meeting was held Monday, January 16, 1989, following the games.

President Rita Vanek called the meeting to order with Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence was observed for deceased and sick members, especially, our recently deceased members, John A. Socha, Frank Huvar, Steffie Dornak and C.J. Massingill.

Secretary Leona Macha called the roll of officers.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read and approved.

Correspondence since the last meeting included a Supreme Lodge letter of January 5, 1989, announcing the "Good News" of a declared 9.75

Lodge No. 79 , Corpus Christi Recognizes Recipient

On December 16, 1988 Brother Frank Veselka, representing Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi, presented Sister Annie Laza with a Certificate, stating that her policy has matured.

She had attained the age of 96 on October 5, 1988 and had been a member over 50 years, first joined Lodge No. 118, Kingsville, and, when that lodge disbanded, she transferred to Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi.

Currently she is a resident of Canterbury Villa Nursing Home in Kingsville.

Other Lodge No . 79 members who were present on December 16th were Sister Carrie Veselka, Sister Helen Pavelka, Sister Lillie Osborne (niece of Sister Laza) who enjoyed visiting with Sister Annie Laza.

Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi Dear Members: The December annual meeting of Lodge No. 79 was held and the attendance could have been better. We were disappointed that more members did not come to join us for the evening of good food and socializing.

One new member, Grady E. Cowan III, was accepted as a member into the lodge.

It was voted on for the $50 charity donation for November and December be used to purchase items for the Women's Shelter.

There was a discussion, pro and con about changing the meeting time to a Sunday afternoon; no action was taken and it was tabled for further discussion.

The officers elected to serve for 1989 were President Eugene Hrncir, Vice President Michael Majek, Secretary and Reporter Helen Pavelka, Treasurer Jerry Sijansky, and .Youth Leader Kay Majek. Since the office of fraternal activities coordinator is optional, the vice president will serve as the lodge fraternal activities coordinator. After the meeting, District VII Director Thelma Hrncir installed the officers for the coming year.

Sister Thelma Hrncir donated two extra door prizes and the lucky winners were for (women) -- Sister Helen Pavelka and for (men) -- Brother Frank Veselka.

The first meeting in 1989 was held Wednesday, January 11th, with the usual attendance. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Brother Billy C. Brock, who had died the week before.

Sister Helen Pavelka read the names of the six members who had transferred to Lodge No. 31, Yoakum; they were Monta Foster, Mildred Foster, Juanita Rico, Jessica Rico, Angela Rico and Toye Tanner.

Voted and accepted as new members were Lucas Ray Cowan, Wendy Sue Wright, Allison D. Huff and Dustin J. Tepera.

There was a continued discussion about changing the meeting and, again, this was tabled for further discussion.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 8 at 7 p.m. at the hall.

All our officers were present except Youth Leader Barbara Linney who had a legitimate reason for not attending.

President Jerry Ermis asked all the officers and Board members to dress up for picture - taking at the February

13th monthly meeting. Do not say you didn't know it because it's been in the Vestnik several times.

Entertainment Chairman Harley Cox gave me a written report on his accomplishments for 1988. He was very happy about the gain over 1987.

We have set a goal of $50,000 in 1989. Please pick up your dance schedule for January through June.

Come to the dances and have a good time with us.

It was announced that our hard working youth will have a garage sale in March so check your possessions and give the articles that you have no use for to the youth. Remember: "One hand washes the other."

Kathy Jolly reported that Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra will entertain the residents at S.P .J.S.T. Rest Home, in Needville on Sunday, February 26th.

They will be looking forward to that date.

Manager of the Blue Room Margaret Allbritton has another unusual party planned for April 2nd.

The tickets will go on sale February 1st and be only $10 a person with food, drinks and dance (all yours). Henry Repka will furnish the music, and Willie Wehring will prepare the barbecue with a planned menu by the committee. You will love it! Get your reservations as soon as possible.

Evelyn Walla, a Choral Group member, lost her mother recently.

Elenora Bristik, wife of deceased Albert Bristik, who was a Sales Representative for many years, died recently in Austin, but was buried in Houston. The families have our sympathy.

Arnold Spencer, who is at home now after surgery, is doing fine.

Naomi, his wife, is busy cooking for him because he has to eat 6 meals a day.

Ed Miculka is a busy man, too, waiting on Ellen, who also has had serious surgery, but thank the dear Lord, she's progressing very well, too.

Mr. Holly, Ellen's father, is in the hospital again. The true saying is "When it rains it pours."

Ann Gerlich, wife of Gus Gerlich fell and broke her arm which makes us all so sad because her health has been failing recently.

The SPJST membership is extending their sympathy to Edna Ruppert, who lost her husband E.A. Ruppert on January 12, 1989.

Nick Navarro played January 14th to a big crowd of fine people. Henry Kite and wife, Adella, were in charge of the dance with Laura Bell and Royal Warnasch and Rosalee and Tim Kostom assisting. You can't imagine the beautiful gowns the ladies wore and the gentlemen in tuxedos, with the staff there to greet them and then escort them to their tables. This courtesy is greatly appreciated.

February 12th is our 24th anniversary of the present Lodge 88 location. What a Big Day that will be!

A dinner of braised beef will be served at 11:30 a.m. until ?? The special night will entertain those who wish to spend the afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. and then Ray Jurecka will play for the dance from 5 to 9 p.m. Our meal tickets are $4.50 per person, which includes the dance; however, if you don't have a meal ticket, there will be a charge of $2 for the dance. There will be other entertainment by the Men's Club, Sales Representatives and Officers. Come and see the "fun" we have to offer.

On March 12, 1989 District V has a meeting at Lodge 172 at Pasadena -- a

very important meeting. Be sure and don't miss this. I will give details later.

No. 88, Houston January Meeting Lodge

The meeting was opened with Flag Bearers Darlene Migl and Marlene Migl, assisted by Lindsey Michalak, leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Since our last meeting, we have lost three members, Vlasta Eleanor Bristik, William F. Hoffmann and Emilie Jirasek, and the members stood a moment in silence in tribute to the departed members.

All officers were present except Parliamentarian Ellen Miculka and Youth Leader Barbara Linney. Ellen was home recovering from open heart surgery and being capably nursed back to health by husband Ed Miculka. In the absence of Ed, not much was reported for the Men's Club. I understand that the Men's Club was Ed's brainchild which now has some thirty children, all working on the lodge premises in beautifying and maintaining them. It saves the lodge a lot of money in addition to the fun these guys have. I would not be surprised if they are not looking for more members and, if you are retired and want to accept this challenge, give Ed a call or speak to any of the members. They are an active group -it's for men only. The wives and girlfriends enjoy the parties, so you ladies encourage your man to join.

All appointed committees were ratified and approved by the membership. Tillie Helmcamp and Nancy Stuebing were elected to the Remunerations Committee. Secretary and Treasurer Shirley Stonaker gave a good report and presented President Ermis with a check for $33,377.76 representing a 9.75 percent refund on total premiums submitted to the Supreme Lodge this past year -undoubtedly, the highlight of evening.

One new officer, Fraternal Activities Coordinator Homer Alexander, graced the officers' table, and gave an outstanding report of 1,240 pairs of eye glasses having been turned over to the Houston Lighthouse for the Blind, in addition to clothing and shoes having been given to the Covenant House. The Board of Trustees donated $325 to purchase toys for underprivileged children at Christmas and the Popcorn Committee donated popcorn for the kids. I tried to find the Popcorn Committee listed some place, but couldn't. The entire committee consists, I believe, of King Hegwood and Bill Malak -- two members who give unselfishly of their time and talent without much fanfare. They just keep the popcorn poppin'.

Entertainment Chairman Harley Cox reported good earnings for 1988, and introduced his 1989 committee members. Only four new members were added. Twenty - three members stayed on for the new year. That speaks volume -- they must be enjoying the work and fellowship. Without mentioning your goal amount for 1989, I am believing you will succeed, Harley!

Annie Vala graciously thanked the members in advance for helping her on the Anniversary Day coming up on February 12th. Even on a busy day like that one will be, Annie always seems to

GIVING is a year - round affair at Lodge 88! Willie Wehring reported a successful year for 1988 and also that the members on his committee had donated 3,497 hours to make it a success. The : irthday Club Sisters are a thriving group; this was reported by President Kathy Treffel. They served food to families of their members who have lost loved ones during the past year. The Choral Club and Czech Concert Orchestra do a superb job in representing the lodge in our community when they go out and perform at various community functions. Mary Kosut reported charity work of 2,741 hours and 18,327 hours spent for the lodge without compensation during 1988.

Quite a lot of hours for love and affection!

Congratulations to the new Board of Trustees' Chairman Karl Lindemann, and thanks to Bobby Miksch for a job well done in 1988. The Building Committee chairman is working closely with the Board and the architect, and we should have some positive feedback on the new building soon.

Congratulations to Helen Hegwood, Sidon Tumis, and Evelyn Mikeska, for being $1,000,000 producers, as reported by Helen Hegwood. There were eleven $1,000,000 producers statewide and District V proudly claims these three. Helen introduced Victor Janak II and moved that he be accepted as a new Sales Representative from our lodge. Motion was unanimously carried, and so, Victor, that means you will have to sell $1,000,000 next year!

District Y Youth Counselor Marie Stayton proudly presented her team that participated in statewide competition in Temple. She beamed as she introduced Lynn Pflughaupt and Vincent Hegwood, co - captains, and players Vernon Hegwood, Bobbie Allbritton, Christi Bilnoski, Kim Holub, and Traci Green (who was not present -- and was on a ski trip).

DATES TO REMEMBER: Czech Classes taught by our own Bill Souchek will begin on January 23 at 7:30 p.m. and will meet each Monday, except for lodge meeting nights. Youth Leaders meeting at Camp Lone Star on March 10, 11 and 12; District V meeting at Lodge 172 on March 12; Twenty - fourth Anniversary of Lodge 88 on February 12th. That's not fai away, so start making plans to attend.

Lunch will be served and your luncheon ticket will admit you to the dance.

There were 119 members present.

We sang "Happy Birthday" to twenty members, and Carol and J.R. Bruce celebrated their eleventh anniversary in January. Door prizes were won by this writer (Mildred Holeman), Pearl Hanka, Pat Neskorik and Estelle Kelly.

Our members and Sokol friends are encouraged to attend the Annual Gymnastics Exhibition of Sokol Havlicek Borovsky because it enters its 81st year of activity. Dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Group pictures of gymnasts will be taken at 12:30 p.m.

The exhibition will start at 1 p.m. with a dance to D.J. music to follow. embership awards will be presented.

A donation of $1 will cover the cost of the exhibition and the dance.

Saturday, preceding the exhibition, Sokol will host a Volleyball Tournament with all Sokol units in the district participating.

Sokol in Ennis was recently recognized by the Gymnastic Association of Texas for 80 years of continuous service to the youth of our community. Brother Larry Laznovsky, unit president, and Sister Laznovsky were guests at the organization's Annual Banquet in Austin to receive the award.

The first meeting of 1989 was called to order by President Bill Hutka at 7:30 p.m. The pledge was recited with all officers present and other members.

A get well card was sent to Juan Santiago and a sympathy card was sent to Earl Sandelier.

The minutes were read and approved as read. Correspondence was from the Supreme Lodge and a request for a donation for the Bell County Youth Fair and Livestock Show.

All Trustees were present and decided to close the kitchen at Debonaires and also Leather and Lace dances.

Two new members were voted into the lodge, namely, Amelia Ybarra and Shirley M. Trigg.

Our lodge voted to donate $100 to the Bell County Youth Fair; this donation is to come out of the Lodge Game Fund.

We had twenty - nine members present at the meeting.

Shryl Wiest resigned as Youth Club leader; a committee was appointed to seek a replacement. The committee consists of Kathy Fritz, Ancia Hughes and Helen Bland. If you are a member in good standing and would like to be youth leader, contact one of the above persons so they can consider you.

An Audit Committee was appointed, namely Barbara Wright, Ray Ybarra and Dorothy Lisenbe.

Lodge No. 180, Burleson Dear Members: Our first meeting of 1989 was held January 3rd with all officers present.

President Louis Grochoske thanked Randy Payne for the good job he did as trustee chairman for the past two years. Joe Hurtik, Sr. was elected trustee chairman for 1989, and Louis Grochoske was elected co - chairman.

Our New Year's Eve Dance was a huge success; the best attendance we've had at any dance all year. Our January attendance has been good so far and we hope this keeps up. Last year, we were really struggling at times wondering if we would make it.

Lodge No. 180 made a donation of $300 to the Child Abuse Program.

Our meetings are now held the first Tuesday of the month. Our next meeting will be February 7th at 7:30 p.m., and the Trustees' meeting is on the same night at 6:30 p.m.

Lodge

Members of Hill Country SPJST Lodge No. 185 met at the Bavarian Village on January 19th for the meeting of 1989.

Minutes of the October and December meetings were approved.

A card of thanks from the family of the late Mr. John Haag (father of Roy Haag) was read.

The treasurer gave a financial report.

It was decided that members of our lodge would be working at the

Bavarian Polka Fest this spring. We will be preparing and selling food in the Wurst Haus on the grounds of the Bavarian Village. Roy Haag reported no definite date has been set for the polka fest.

Our president presented Betty Doeppenschmidt with a plaque for her three and one - half years of faithful service as our youth leader. Our new youth leader is Theresa Haag.

Our next meeting will be March 16th at the Bavarian Village beginning at 8 p.m. The Youth Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. on the same date.

The name Kathleen was drawn for the attendance prize.

The joint quarterly meeting and 1988 Christmas Dinner Party of Lodge 189 was called to order at 12:30 p.m.

Sunday, December 11, 1988, at University Inn by President Ernest Wentrcek.

Joseph Polasek led everyone in prayer and thanksgiving. A delicious buffet was enjoyed by all.

The business portion of the meeting began at 1:45 p.m. Flag Bearer Loren Helton led members and guests present in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call of officers was called with all being present.

President Wentrcek then recognized all of the 1988 officers as well as the new 1989 incoming officers.

Minutes from the September meeting were read and approved.

Correspondence was read which

included a Christmas card from District I Director Andrew Vavra.

The treasurer's report was given and approved.

Benevolence Committee Chairman Nina Quitta reported that get well cards had been sent to Derek Shultz, Hawley West, Vlasta Wentrcek and Doreen Wentrcek.

President Wentrcek welcomed Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernie Gebala and District III Field Representative Jim Wiest. District I Director Andrew Vavra was unable to attend due to illness. All other guests were also welcomed.

Old business discussed at this time, included the garage sale which had been cancelled due to the lack of goods' contributed. Members were advised that they could pick up their contributions or they would be donated to Twin City Mission.

The next topic for discussion was a letter received from the Bryan College Station Eagle regarding our past participation in the Cheer Fund and the success of the 1988 Cheer Fund. This fund is a community - wide campaign to provide food for the needy at Christmastime. Sponsored by the Bryan - College Station Eagle newspaper, it has become a tradition in which local businesses, families, church groups, schools, clubs and individuals participate. Donations of money, canned goods and non perishable food items are accepted.

Cash donations are especially welcome since they allow the purchase of nutritious food at wholesale cost. Last year $25,682 was raised and over 10,000 food items were contributed -enough to distribute two bags of groceries each to 1,400 families in our area. A motion was made by Cliff Junek and seconded by I.J. Shenkir that the lodge donate $100 to the Cheer Fund campaign. All present approved.

In keeping with the spirit of giving at Christmas and fraternalism, a motion was then made by Alfon Quitta and seconded by Ernie Wentrcek, Jr., to make a $100 donation to the SPJST Scholarship Fund. This motion was also approved by all members present.

Joseph Polasek made a motion to donate $100 to the Czech Educational Foundation Fund of Texas (CEF1).

This was seconded by Billie Wentrcek and approved by all present.

Joseph Polasek presented a brief program on the history of SPJST which was very enlightening and entertaining. Everyone joined in singing "Joy to the World." Gift sacks were then passed out to all the children present.

SL Vice President Bernie Gebala installed the officers for 1989. They are: President -- Ernest A. One other item of interest and note to all of our members is that our quarterly meeting place has been changed. Effective with the March 12, 1989, meeting, Lodge 189 will be meeting at the W&W Real Estate Office located at 4343 Carter Creek Parkway, Suite 117, Bryan, Texas.

No. 88, Houston Choral Group Lodge

By Naomi K. Spencer The Choral Group of Lodge 88, Houston, held its annual meeting on January 17, and was called to order by President Gene Barcak.

Primarily, the purpose of this meeting was to elect officers for the new year and to outline a prospective program.

At the present time, there are approximately forty members in this group, however due to illness and other drawbacks, very often the group of 35 members meets for rehearsals. It is fitting at this time to remember our faithful members who have been unable to report for rehearsals on a regular basis because of illness: Brother Amos Kadlecek and his wife, Della, have been members since the Choral Group was organized and they are missed. Likewise, Frances Olexa, another charter member, has found it inconvenient to attend rehearsals. Our most recent member, Arnold Spencer, on the sick list found himself in emergency at the Diagnostic Hospital early on Christmas Day. After eighteen days he was on his way home after a serious operation. He appreciates the number of get well cards and flowers received during this time and sends his thanks. He also joins me in thanking his three sisters for coming from Louisiana to offer moral support. Also, my sister, Ruth, and her husband, Frank Kurz, of Oklahoma City, who spent a few days with me. Their prayers and moral support led us all through this crisis.

We can only hope that in time , these faithful members will return to our fold.

After some old business was brought up for discussion, Tim Kostom announced that plans to have a picture of the group taken are being made.

Members will be advised of this move.

Under more new business, a move was made and passed for the Choral Group to take part in celebrating the 24th anniversary to be held on February 12th, by making a generous contribution to the SPINNING WHEEL in charge of Helen Hegwood.

The following officers were elected to serve in 1989: President Gene Barcak having served two previous years, there are times when he is limited due to business, but he is, nevertheless, happy to serve the third term.

Secretary Evelyn Walla -- this is likewise her third term. She is very efficient and professional, and her records are reliable and well catalogued. What's more, she enjoys the responsibility. In addition to this, she is the Telephone Committee.

Treasurer Rosalee Kostom -- this responsibility has been in her hands for as many years as one can remember.

She also is responsible and efficient and finds it a pleasure to be in control.

Choral Group Director Tim Kostom -- he has held the group together since

8/VESTNiK—Wednesday, February 1, 1989 1965, and it is difficult to imagine the group without him. Getting the music together, taking appointments for commitments when the president is otherwise tied up has been one of his main concerns.

Helen Hegwood, our soloist, is again our assistant director. It is my pleasure to add that, with her God given voice, she has held a special place in our group, like in most cases, if a group has a leading voice, it makes it a pleasure to hit the right notes and to mark time correctly. A tremendous leader in the soprano section she is!

Naomi K. Spencer was again elected as accompanist. This is my pleasure.

After the meeting adjourned, there were refreshments which would satisfy all highly - gourmet tastes. As we all know, when you call for "something on the plate" for the meetings, you may be sure the Czechs will come across!

Now, in conclusion: I have just been advised that word from the Supreme Lodge has been received confirming the "Fraternalist of the Year Award" to none other than Brother Tim Kostom of Lodge 88, Houston.

May 1989 be a healthy and prosperous year for everyone. For those of you who made New Year's resolutions, keep them up. Somehow most resolutions get broken before the end of January, like mine.

Our meetings were held November 10th and December 8th. The attendance for November was 34 members and 7 guests; for December, 25 members and 6 guests. Guests were Joe Houdek, Milan Dujka, Bill Foit, Bob Zvolanek , Alvin Elsik, Jerry Kohn, Ernest Huff, Erben Crone, Wesley Tupy, Frank Holley and Frank Hejny.

President Sadie Kubin presided at both meetings. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and the secretary's and treasurer's reports were given and approved as read.

Sunshine Report -- Sister Stacie Hejny sent a get well card and a money gift to Sister Leona Jurica. Sister Jurica thanked the Circle for the card and the gift.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to November and December birthday sisters.

Sisters on the sick list were Leona Jurica, Millie Vytopil, Annie Vrana, Frances Vita, Agnes Janecka, Rosie Zazvorka, Mary Sebestik, Libbie and Alvin Elsik and Tom Roberts. We hope all are feeling better now.

Sister Wilma Jelinek's quilt was quilted in November. She thanked all the quilters. The quilters got a day off since there was no quilting in December.

Election of officers for 1989 was held in November. The following officers and committee chairpersons were elected: President -- Saide Kubin, Vice President -- Georgia Zabojnik, Secretary -- Ella Mae Zmolek, Treasurer -- Mildred Trojacek, Sunshine -- Libbie Wisniewski, Kitchen Hostess -- Stacie Hejny and Reporter -- Alice Roberts.

At our November meeting, tickets were sold for a quilt and afghan. Sister Hattie Lekar was the winner of the quilt and Sister Ella Mae Zmolek was the winner of the afghan. Before we adjourned to our luncheon, Sister Anne Zvolanek read "An Ode to the Soaps" and Sister Mildred Trojacek read a short humorous verse.

A Christmas greeting was read from Sister Anne and Bob Zvolanek who were on a Caribbean Cruise on the Royal Princess. Sister Georgia Tupy spent 3 weeks in Anaheim, California, visiting her sister, Mildred Baker and brother - in - law, Bill.

An invitation from the family of Sister Betty Houdek was read, inviting the members of the Circle to Sister Betty's Birthday Party on December 11th. Congratulations to you, Betty, upon your 85th birthday!

Donations to Circle -- a memorial in memory of Joe Janicek from Katie Omelina, votive candles brought by Sister Anne Zabojnik; these were given to our Circle by Revco Drug Store.

Sister Liddie Pavelka brought plants and sample upholstery material for sale; money received went to the Circle. Sister Liddie also brought several 1988 Presidential Handbooks for sisters to take. On behalf of the Circle, thank you all!

Thanks to Sister Sidney Bridewell for taking on the responsibility of purchasing silverware for the Circle.

We enjoyed using the new silverware at our Christmas luncheon. Good - bye to plasticware!

Our Circle gave a donation to the Sheltered Workshop. in Ennis as our 1988 choice of charity.

Christmas gifts were exchanged and Christmas Carols were sung.

Decorations were brought by Stacie Hejny and Georgia Tupy. I displayed a few of mine. I got to the meeting a little late so will save the decorations for next year. Thanks to the Sisters who brought the decorations and those sisters who helped to decorate.

Each officer and committee person received a lovely poinsettia plant from the Circle.

Sister Liddie Pavelka thanked the officers and committee persons for performing their duties so well in 1988.

She also thanked the ones who brought the Christmas decorations and decorating the tables and Christmas tree.

We did not have a meeting in January.

Our next meeting will be February 9th. See you then!

Circle Of Czech Women

I am quite late in reporting on our Christmas Party, but I did have a lot to io in betweem that time and just didn't get around to the old typewriter.

We did have a wonderful attendance and the many guests and members introduced themselves one at a time so that by the end of the party we all knew each other better.

President Bertha Podhrasky held a short business meeting.

Minutes and treasurer's reports were correct as read. The following correspondence was read: A thank you card from Lillian Moran, a note from Millie Noska wishing happy holidays to all, a thank you from the Ronald McDonald Home, a thank you from the Shriners Hospital, a thank you from American Legion Auxiliary, a thank you from Genesis Women's Shelter, literature from City of Dallas office of International Affairs, also literature from Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, a Christmas card and donation from Josie Kankrlik.

Sister Zdenka Skotak read a letter that she received from Frances Konakovsky. Aggie Mach extended her thank you for our sympathy on the loss of her husband, Frank.

Libbie Elsik mailed get well greetings to James Pavelka (Liddie's husband) and to Tom Roberts (Alice's husband).

Liddie Pavelka mailed an anniversary congratulations card to Lillian and Edmund Kaska, a get well to Joe Vlk (Adelle's husband) and Liddie mailed Christmas greetings to Frances Barfield, Virginia Blatney, Anna Brown, Mary Dusek, Ella Foit, Rose Urban, Mildred Voss, Ella Bartos, Frances Konakovsky, Adela Lesikar, Georgia Long, Martha Malooly and Mary Nesuda.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to December birthday celebrants Mary Kubacak, Florence Peressenyi, Evelyn Cechan, Frances Sparks, Frances Barfield, Lillian Kaska, Bessie Reames, JoAnn Maca, Vicki Kohn, Agnes Mach, Evelyn Cechan, Roy Pokladnik, Justine Pokladnik, Adela Lesikar, Agnes Finch, Linda Kartous and Ann Skrabanek.

There were no hostesses since the party was catered.

Everyone enjoyed the fellowship and joyful environment. The singing of Christmas Carols (led by Dorothy Reznik, Stacie Athas and Anne Zvolanek) was especially heartwarming. Everyone sang so well and knew the songs, especially "Jingle Bells" in Czech.

Esther Cunningham handed out 1989 calendars to each member.

Pictures were taken for our scrapbook collection.

Announcements were made regarding the American - Czech Culture meeting by Anne Zvolanek.

The Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council's Christmas Party was announced by Dorothy Reznik.

Sister Mary Sebestik recited a cute poem entitled "A Little Girl's Christmas Wish."

We are, once again, happy to announce that we have another new member. Welcome, Carlyn Ondrusek!

Esther Cunningham and her husband visited their son, Dr. Michael Smalky in Boston, Massachuetts. They helped celebrate the birthdays of their granddaughters, Natasha and Sasha.

The week after Christmas, they visited with sister Frankie and her husband, Tim Morgan. Tim is a colonel in the Army in Washington, D.C. They also enjoyed seeing their nieces, Christine and Elizabeth.

Sister Justine and husband, Sid Pokladnik, held an open house on January 8th for many of their friends and family. It was a lovely occasion and they were very gracious hosts.

Everyone who attended enjoyed themselves. Their home is indeed very lovely!

We will soon be resuming our meetings. I do hope to see all of you at our February 2nd meeting.

Keep your fingers crossed that we don't have to cancel our meeting because of snow or ice. It still can happen to us and it most likely will when we don't invite it.

Mr. R.J. Sefcik Editor of Vestnik PO Box 85 West, Texas 76691 Dear Mr. Sefcik: Thank you for publishing, in the January 4, 1989 Vestnik, the words (both in Czech and English) of the Czech National Anthem.

As a child growing up, in Temple, I remember the many times my grandmother, Mrs. Anna Juroska Klecka, sang this song to me and my family. My ,grandparents came to America from the Horni Becva area of Moravia in the early 1900s. My grandfather died in 1941 and my grandmother died in the late 1960s. My grandmother always talked about the beautiful homeland she left behind and, unfortunately, never returned to visit. My husband, Barton Fuchs, and I visited Czechoslovakia and her village in 1972. In 1976 my mother, Mrs. Frances Bartek, of Temple, and I made the trip back to Czechoslovakia.

What a wonderful experience we had meeting my grandmother's sisters and their families, visiting the church where my grandparents were married, and seeing the places that my grandmother talked about all those years. It is truly a "krasna zem6."

I sang "Kde Domov Milj" with my grandmother many, many times but had forgotten most of the Czech words and did not remember the English translation. Your printing of the song brings back many happy memories for me.

The Southern Pacific train rolled into the station shortly after 2 a.m. on a sultry July night. The sleepy soldiers were welcomed with the sound of martial music and the voices of 500 Czech - Texans shouting, "Nazdar Vitame Vas" (To success - welcome).

Czech girls dressed in festive costumes escorted the somewhat bewildered men. The Red Cross and other volunteers passed out food, drink, cigarettes and gifts to the soldiers. The mayor's representative and a committee of Houston Czechs officially welcomed the famed Czech Legionaries to Texas.

Here Comes Santa! Reindeer Billy Henry, James Stead and Jason Pipes are really pulling the load with Santa [Charlie Easten] in the sled.

On December 11, 1988 , the Lodge No. 35 Youth Club presented their program for guests and mother lodge.

The program entitled "Here Comes Santa Claus" consisted of Charlie Easten (Santa Claus), Charlene Stead (Mrs. Claus), elves were Jason Breitkreitz, Timmy Pavelka, Tommy Pavelka and Waylon Callaway, reindeer included Billy Henry, James Stead and Jason Pipes. The program was written by Youth Leader Louise Burney.

As we entered the North Pole to check on Santa, he and Mrs. Claus welcomed us.

We observed while the elves loaded the sled with live toys (train engineer

Christopher Pavelka) dolls of all kinds, ballerinas consisting of Sheena Pavelka, Brandice Pavelka and many visiting guests, ballerina Sissy, a duck ballerina Carla and football player R.E. Easten.

Special music was provided by Billy Boatman, Barbara Pavelka and Cindy Easten.

We want to express our sincere thanks to Mrs. Billie Boatman and her beautiful voice. We have already reserved her singing talent for next year. The singers provided music while the program ran its course. Elves hitched up the reindeer and the reindeer sang "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer." Then they pulled their sled with Santa and his toys around the dance floor several times while the singers were singing "Here Comes Santa Claus."

The audience seemed to enjoy our program and the children took turns riding in the sled while the reindeer pulled it. The sled was made by Louise and Richard Burney.

Our old business for this month is the quilt sale. On the quilt sale, we made $195; also on tickets sold at the Lodge 66 Christmas Party, we made $160.

New business for this month is to make Valentine boxes. If you do not want to, you don't have to make them.

Brother Mazanec worked as a rancher in the Waco area. He was an active member of St. Joseph's Parish in Bellmead and took an active part in civic and community projects. He was an RVOS Lodge 109 member and an SPJST member since 1917. He served as president and secretary of SPJST for many terms.

Brother Ed and his wife, Agnes had been loyal and faithful workers of Lodge 66 for many years. They were charter members of the lodge.

Sister Agnes preceded her husband in death on March 6, 1988.

Sister Angela was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Daughters and an SPJST member since October 1962.

She and her husband, Walter, were faithful and hard - working members of Linden Hall for many years.

12/VESTNIK—Wednesday, February 1, 1989 were Frances Blaha Kotrla and John Kotrla. At an early age, her family moved to Taylor, Texas, where she met and later married Joe F. Jirasek on June 18, 1922. The family moved to Houston, Texas, where she has resided for the past 46 years. She was a professional dressmaker and was employed by the Atlas Dress Manufacturing Company for over 20 years.

She was reared in the Czech Moravian Brethren Church and in Houston was a member of the Denver Harbor Presbyterian Church and was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 88.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Joe F. Jirasek on March 30, 1978; son, Jerry Lee Jirasek and daughter, Gladys Ruth Jones; two sisters and a brother also preceded her in death.

Survivors include one daughter, Evelyn Walla and son - in - law, Max Walla; nine grandchildren, fifteen great - grandchildren and seven great great - grandchildren. Also surviving are one sister, three brothers, numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Interment was in Earthman Resthaven Cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Lucy was born September 4, 1906 in Rowena to Frank Havlak, Sr. and Mary (Mazur) Havlak. She was married to Charlie Bubenik May 19, 1931 in San Angelo. He preceded her in death on February 27, 1986. Mrs. Bubenik was also preceded in death by one son, Charlie Bubenik.

She was a member of St. Helen's Altar Society, St. Ambrose Catholic Church and the SPJST Lodge No. 160 and was a homemaker.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Stanley (Martha) Broz of Lowake; one son, Larry Bubenik of Veribest; one brother, Frank Havlak of Wall; six sisters, Julie Havlak of Veribest, Annie Braden of Wall, Barbara Wanoreck of San Angelo and Mary Germany, Elva Havlak and Emily Bernardo, all of Dallas; five grandchildren, Gary Broz of Brady, Carl Broz of Lowake, Debra Halfmann of Rowena and Danny Beverly and Joann Beverly, both of Bryan and four great - grandchildren, Shauna and Jonathan Broz, Jimmy and Roxanne Halfmann.

Kelly Chapman, Megan and Justir Mikeska; one brother, Calvin Mikeska of Houston, Texas; four sisters, Vlasta Surovec of Wharton, Texas, Viola Spalding of Portola Valley, California, Leona Wilhite of Austin, Texas and Dorothy Eversole of Hitchcock, Texas and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 27 at 2 p.m. at the Garmany - Carden Chapel, in Needville, with Rev. Richard Avery officiating.

Interment was in the Guy Public Cemetery under the direction of the Garmany - Carden Funeral directors.

Pallbearers were nephews, Calvin Mikeska, Jr., Clay and Bruce Eversole, Michael Anderson and grandsons, Chris and Chad Crum and Kelly Chapman.

Eckers Mark 50 th Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Ecker celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a noon Mass in Sacred Heart Cathedral Chapel on Monday, January 16, 1989.

Johnny F. Ecker and Ruby Faltisek were married January 16, 1939, in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rowena.

They have lived in San Angelo since their marriage.

The couple has two children, Ardone Therault of San Angelo and Arveal Wimbish of Fort Worth; five

grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Ecker worked in a grocery store for 10 years and at Texas Commerce Bank for 35 years. He is now retired. His wife is a member of the Catholic Women's Organization and Baptist Memorials Auxiliary. They are both members of Sacred Heart Cathedral.

A New year's Eve family dinner, at Western Skies restauant, was hosted by their daughters and their families.

Akademik Franti g ek Travnieek (1888 - 1961) vydal fadu praci, z nich je nej yYznattinej g i Mluvnice spisovne 'eegtiny. Spolu s Pavlem Va g ou sestavil Slovak jazyka eeskeho (1937 a dalgi vydani), dnes ul zastaravajici. VYvoj spisovne ee g tiny a eeska nateei zpracoval akad. Bohuslav Havranek (1893 - 1978); vedle mnoha studii o spisovnem jazyce napsal spolu s prof.

Aloisem Jedliekou Cetnj5mi pracemi z oboru Ceske mluvnice, zejmena ze skladby, o tvofeni slov, ale take o pavodu slov a mistnich jmen obohatil eeskou bohemistiku prof. Vladimir Smilauer (1895).

V osvobozene republice bylo dokon'eeno monumentalni dilo Pfiruent slovnik jazyka eeskeho (viz str. 134). Zaeal vychazet v roce 1935, tedy sto let po Jungmannove Cesko-nemeckem slovniku (viz str.

142) a byl dokoneen v r. 1957. Je to kolektivni dilo pracovnika Ustavu pro jazyk e'eskY (dive kancelat Slovniku jazyka eeskeho) a jeho redakce se zueastnili na g i ptedni jazykovedci Oldfich Hujer, Emil Smetanka, Milog Weingart, Bohuslav Havranek, Vladimir Smilauer, Alois Ziskal. V letech 1960 - 1971 vychazel Slovnik spisovneho jazyka eeskeho (viz str.

136), rovnel peel Ustavu pro jazyk eeskY a za redakce Bohuslava Havranka, Jaromira Belice, Miloge Helcla, Aloise-Jedlina, Vaclava Ktistka a Franti g ka Travnieka. V roce 1978 vy g el za redakce J. Filipce a Fr. Dane g e Slovnik spisovne 'Catiny, vhodnY pro g kolu i pro nej g ir g i vetejnost.

V soueasne dobe se studium eeskeho jazyka stale prohlubuje a roz g ituje i o oblasti nove. Se jrneny nagich vynikajicich jazykovedca se setkavate v easopisech, v rozhlasu, v televizi a zejmena v easopisech Nak fec a Slovo a slovesnost a dale v mnoha odbornYch i popularnich publikacich.

Na g i jazykovedci usiluji o vedecke poznani na g eho matetskeho jazyka, ktere je nezbytne k tomu, aby se e'e g tina stavala stale dokonalejgim prosttedkem dorozumeni mezi eleny na g eho naroda. Jazykova kultura je jednim ze znakii kultury naroda vabec.

A loved one dies, household chores and expenses mount, neighborhood crime worsens. For these and other reasons, many elderly in good health but living alone feel forced to leave their homes. Rather than take such a drastic step, thousands of older people are turning to roommates who provide companionship, security and help with housework and costs. More than 400 house - sharing programs in 42 states now match healthy elderly with housemates, typically financially strapped young or middle - aged women who are recent divorcees or between jobs. Before a match is made, both parties must fill out a questionnaire regarding living habits.

Agencies, which may charge a fee of $5 to $30, then check references and put potential roommates in touch by phone. If both parties are agreeable, the agency helps them draw up a month - to - month lease detailing specifics of responsibilities and rent.

Boarders can expect to do up to 10 hours a week of chores and shopping in exchange for free or reduced rent, which averages about $150 to $300 a month. While such arrangements allow the elderly to stay put, there are drawbacks, such as some loss of privacy. And because boarders tend to relocate quickly, most matches last less than a year. To find programs in your area, call your local agency on aging or the Shared Housing Resource Center.
