Former Supreme Lodge Officer Remembered

Raymond A. Urbanovsky Financial Secretary, Supreme Lodge April 5, 1943 - January 1, 1960 Secretary, Supreme Lodge January 1, 1960 - January 1, 1973

Brother Raymond A. Urbanovsky was born on a farm near West, McLennan County, Texas on November 11, 1901, the son of John and Josephine Sykora Urbanovsky.

After completing studies in the West schools, he enrolled in the commercial department of St. Mary's College, La Porte, Texas. During the first year at St. Mary's, he was forced to abandon studies, being stricken with scarlet fever. He enrolled and graduated, with honors, from Toby's Business College, Waco, Texas in 1921.

Resolution Of Respect WHEREAS, the Supreme Lodge and the SPJST membership was saddened to learn of the death of Raymond A. Urbanovsky, past secretary of the Supreme Lodge SPJST; and,

WHEREAS, Brother Urbanovsky left surviving him to mourn his departure, his wife, Hattie; his daughter, Dorothy Stiff, two granddaughters and one great grandson, a host of relatives, friends and neighbors, all of whom, with all the members of the Supreme Lodge SPJST, mourn his departure; and, WHEREAS, the members of the Supreme Lodge SPJST desire to record their sorrow at the death on December 27, 1988 of Brother Urbanovsky, who had worked harmoniously and diligently for the good of the Society and served as Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary for the period from July 5, 1943 to December 31, 1960 and served as Supreme Lodge Secretary for the period from January 1, 1961 to December 31, 1972.

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST meeting as a body in session on January 9, 1989 hereby gives its formal expression of sympathy and does hereby note in its records the passing from this life of a loyal member, who was respected by his associates and loved by his family and friends.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be tendered to the family as a humble expression of heartfelt sympathy in their bereavement; one copy be sent to the Vestnik for publication; and one copy be spread on the minutes of the Supreme Lodge SPJST. For The Supreme Lodge SPJST

Have we progressed in human value and ethics in the last 200 years?

Thomas Jefferson rode a horse to the Inauguration, in the 1920s the presidents began riding autos to be inaugurated (many of them in convertibles without tops) and now, in 1989, President George Bush has to ride in a $600,000 Lincoln limousine completely bullet - proofed for his safety. In some ways "The Good Old Days" were easier to live in, were they not? How wonder ful it would be if our president could walk or ride anywhere without fear of being assassinated or injured just because he happens to be president. Let's wish him well throughout the years! ***

The year of 1988 has vanished into Eternity. it has been a troublesome year in certain ways. Its effects on our country, its business, and its people have been very heavy. In addition, there have been civil unrest, riots, and heavy crime rates.

What is the outlook for the future?

It is hard to predict whether the world or domestic situation will get better or worse. Let us hope that it gets much better, for we feel that it will.

Majori y of us know that the chief dependence for the SPJST's advancement is upon the members themselves and their lodges. It is their personal interest and activities which give life blood to our strength.

It has always been so. It is so even now.,.at a time when many changes have come about in our methods and in the customs and outlook upon life.

True, we have life insurance plans which are more complicated than they used to be; but they must be in order to meet modern times and condit ions .

We also must be aware of the fact to have better representatives selling our product, however, it is really upon individual members and their action that we must rely upon for real progress. All of us as members and lodge officers should study the present methods to be as helpful as

we can to make them work effectively and to bring closer more people the benefits of our fraternal system. We have done well in the past, therefore, we can do even better in the future. ***

Most of us know that lodge activities are vastly different than they used to be. They have been replaced by other interests and attractions in many places and with many people.

Increased tempos of modern conditions have contributed much to these changed habits and desires.

These changes have been noted for a long time. Constant effort is made to meet this change and accommodate it in our lodges.

It usually takes active leadership in the lodge by at least a small, vigorous group to get things started to undertake such activity. Let's hope that, as times goes on, we can encourage more and more reaction of our lodges to fulfill the true mission of fraternal societies. Fraternals receive certain Special advantages under the law because of their service and help to their members. Every effort should be made to continue to merit these advantages. All lodges should make certain that they send the reports in to the Supreme Lodge concerning their activities during 1988 so as to insure themselves and their members of continuing to receive the benefits of a fraternal society.

Another vast change wrought by the years is "Life Insurance for the Entire Family." Modern insurance is sought in higher amounts these days. It should be. It is also more complicated than formerly because it tends more and more to be "living insurance," instead of death benefits.

These changes mean that it takes more training and instruction to be able to properly present available benefits. All of our members should cooperate with Sales Representatives so that our friends and neighbors will be encouraged to get the benefits in insurance which will best serve them and their family, and which will also admit them to the wholesome lodge activities and friendships which result.

Happily, in spite of the toll of time which has taken so many of our members, we still have many good, faithful workers in our lodges. ***

It is very important for every lodge officer and/or interested individual to orate plans to attend the Supreme Lodge ‘Norkshop for all local lodge officers Saturday, February 25th at Lodge No. 47 (Star Hall) at Seaton from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you cannot attend the workshop, then send a lodge representative. Let's make this the most successful workshop! ***

Tropical - fish fans may spend hundreds of dollars to populate their tanks, so it's more than an emotional loss when fish go belly up. In some countries, such as the Phillippines, saltwater fish are captured by lacing t he water with cyanide, which trims their life span to about three months from five years. Some importers get fish only from areas such as Florida and Fiji, where cyanide isn't used.

While you can't tell by looking how fish were caught, pet - store owners will know where fish are from. You can also judge a fish's health before you buy. Fish that swim with their fins curled in may be sick. Fish huddled in a corner may be too weak to fight off predators. Cloudy eyes signal disease, and fish with scratches may have parasites that they've tried to rub off against coral. The longer fish have been in the shop the better.

Urbanovsky Continued from page 1 He was employed as bookkeeper and salesman in various business establishments in West, Houston, San Antonio and Hillsboro, Texas.

In 1933, he was appointed City Secretary, Assessor and Collector of Taxes of City of West, where he was employed until 1942 when he was called to the service of the country in World War II. After his discharge from service, he returned to his employment with the City of West until July 1943, when he was appointed Financial Secretary of the Supreme Lodge SPJST and held that position until December 31, 1960.

He served as Supreme Lodge Secretary for the period from January 1, 1961 until his retirement December 31, 1972.

Brother Urbanovsky married the former Miss Hattie Cocek of West, Texas.

Lodge

Sunday, January 8, 1989, at 1 p.m., was our first Lodge 6 meeting of this year. President Johnnie Krizan opened the meeting and, with eveyone standing, Tammi Dobecka led us in the pledge to the flag; she also read the SPJST Motto.

Secretary Barbara Hykel read the minutes of our last meeting. The treasurer's report was given by Karen Kroll and Financial Secretary George Straten gave his report, which all reports were accepted as read.

Get well cards were sent to Sister Sophie Pavlas, Richard Hykel's son, Jeff, of Troy, Texas and Lydia and Robert Dobecka.

The next report was by Willie Mae Schuetz about her Youth Club activities.

Other announcements by the president and Board of Trustees' chairman included the discussion about our Easter Party to be held some time in March. More on this later.

In the news -- The Cyrill Svrcek family celebated their 25th wedding anniversary at our hall on January 7th.

Congratulations to them on their occasion; also his parents Cyrill and Christine were married on the same date, they celebrated over 50 years together. We wish them all many more happy days to come.

In other news -- congratulations to Sister Betty Jean (Pavlas) Orler and her husband, Phillip, on their new son, Jacob Aaron, born January 8th. The mother was our "Miss Westfest" of our lodge in 1984. Also congratulations to Brother and Sister Eddie Hykel on the birth of their new baby boy.

A happy birthday to Sister Annie Schroeder on January 19th; hoping she had a good day with the things she enjoyed. A belated birthday to Sister Aunt Kathy Krizan who celebrated her 94th year last October 10th. She must have made many steps and put in lots of work with her hands up - to - date.

Lodge No. 15, Buckholts Dear Members: The regular meeting of Lodge 15 was opened by President Leslie Sakewitz leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

He also welcomed our guests, Dan Balusek, District II Director Willie E. Kohutek and his lovely wife, Adeline and Leigh Ann Talley. Thanks to all of you for attending our meeting.

Brother Willie gave us a very interesting talk about direct billing, about 79 percent of all members in District II are on direct billing. Then he installed all the new officers for 1989. All officers were present besides Sidonia Svoboda who was sick.

Lodge 15 officers installed were: President -- Jo Lee Shiller, Vice President -- Louise Sakewitz, Secretary -- June Harwell, Treasurer -- Pat Hillman and Financial Secretary -Sidonia Svoboda.

Happy Birthday was wished to Ann Balusek and Pat Hillman.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Brother Jerry Pechal, Lodge 47 president, called the meeting to order Sunday, January 8th at 2 p.m.

Flag Bearers Lori Greger and Erin Skrabanek brought in the flags and led the pledge to the U.S. flag. We held a moment of silence to honor the memory of Sister Dorothy Bedrich and Brother John Schneider. May these departed rest in eternal peace, also, all who had passed away in 1988 were included in the moment of silence.

Deepest sympathy is being expressed to the surviving families. President Pechal welcomed all 93 members plus 7 visitors and expressed a "Happy New Year to all." Visitors recognized were Sharon Hejl, Gertrude Kahlig, Ann Balusek, Della Marinik, Eugene Brenek, Willie Hegar and Freddie Schroeder.

Then we proceeded with the installation of the 1989 lodge officers and trustees. Brother Willie E. Kohutek, District II director, read the charge to each officer. The new officers took their places after the installation. Thank you was expressed by the president to Brother Kohutek for the installation who stated, that with cooperation, the lodge will progress.

Sister Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, trustees and sales representatives. Then she read the minutes of the December 4th meeting, which were approved as read.

Correspondence included a Christmas card and appreciation of our advertising on KMIL Radio Station from Brother Alfred Vrazel, a thank you from the Dorothy Bedrich family for flowers sent to their dear one's funeral service, a thank you from Brother Edward and Sister Lucy Mihatsch for the "Brother and Sister Award for 1988," a thank you from the Joe Divis family for flowers sent from the lodge, and a thank you from Brother Robert Heese for the get well card he received recently.

New members accepted included Dennis David Marek, Jr., Melissa Denise Marek, Sarah Marie Marek, Alyssa Brooke Zavodny, Lisa Annetta McClendon, Joe Weldon Truelove, Jr., Barbara Lee Dalton, James Ryan Parnell, Ricky Edward Brenek, Ashley Nicole Sosa, Charcelia Cey Holloway, Henry Fayne Holloway, Brenda Lea Lueck, Rustin Gray Mikeska and Michael Joseph Sodek. A warm welcome to each named and thanks for choosing Lodge 47 for your membership. Little Ricky Brenek was the only one present at the meeting. He is starting out the right way!

Those we knew about being hospitalized, since the last meeting, were Brothers Albert Ach, Albert Mihatsch, Robert W. Haisler, Rudolph Schiller, Alfred Musacek and Jerry Pechal. Brother Frank Klinkovsky had surgery since the meeting and Brother Leo Kahlig was also hospitalized. Sisters Diane Kohutek, Ann Kohutek, Angeline Dana and Ella Haisler were also hospitalized (Ann for a blessed event, a daughter for Brother Kenneth and Sister Ann and a granddaughter of Brother Willie E. and Sister Adeline Kohutek). Congratulations to all and also Brother Frank and Sister Mary Shenkir, the great - grandparents. I'll bet we gain another member at Lodge No. 47.

The lodge had been asked to host the workshop that the Supreme Lodge will hold this year. We approved to host

Forty - fifth wedding anniversary celebrants, Vlasta and Johnny Hruska.

Congratulations and many, many more -- January 8, 1989. the event. More will be forthcoming about the workshop from the Supreme Lodge; the date is Saturday, February 25th. We, also approved the "Roll of Honor" to be printed twice in the Temple Daily Telegram.

Officers' reports included -President Pechal thanked all for helping with Christmas Party, participating and special "thanks" to Santa Claus for the repeat visit to our lodge, the food brought and special thanks to Willie E. and Adeline Kohutek for coordinating the meal for the annual party, the Youth Club and leaders for the Christmas Program, and Memorial Service assisted by Brother Jerry Mikulas of Supreme Lodge, thanks to Brother Clarence and Sister LaVerne Pechal, Brother Calvin and Sister Dolores Skrabanek, Brother Henry and Sister Helen Janacek for helping me with the table covers for New Year's Eve, thanks to those undecorating the hall on January 1st, Brother Frank and Sister Ruth Janacek, Brother Henry and Sister Helen Janacek, Brother Johnny and Sister Vlasta Hruska and Jerry and Dorothy Pechal, thanks to Frank and Ruth Janacek for donating more Christmas decorations, and to all who helped in any way working in the bar, kitchen or ticket area making the chairperson's task easier. A special thanks to retiring Vice President Brother Calvin Skrabanek for being a big help, especially when he had to take over at the picnic when Jerry was in the hospital and at other times; he was always willing to help. Treasurer Lucy Mihatsch had a yearly report as did Financial Secretary Adeline Kohutek.

Brother Willie E. Kohutek spoke on the progress of SPJST and the Supreme Lodge.

Brother Frank Klinkovsky gave the fourth quarterly audit report. We all had a lot of figures to listen to that day.

The chairpersons gave their monthly reports and I presented a yearly report, also, for tickets and monies deposited.

Brother Wallace Jez read the Board of Trustees' minutes.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky gave her report with 37 members, 7 adults and 5 visitors, so with their total and the adult members, we have 149 members present. Thanks to all coming and do make plans to attend, again.

The local eliminations for Straight and "42" dominoes were set -Straight domino will be held Friday, February 10th at 7 p.m. and the "42" will be played Friday, March 31st at 7 p.m. So everyone sharpen up your wits and win the local and state championship. We voted to place our bids for two of the tournaments with the Supreme Lodge -- Taroky - March 4th and Straight Domino - March 25th.

The door prize winners were George Pavelka, Vallie Tupy and Alice Banning.

The next lodge meeting will be Sunday, February 5, 1989 at 2 p.m.

Make plans to come to every meeting, if possible. We are asking the lodge sisters to bring margarine or cool whip tubs (any size) with the tops for the pantry. When we have surplus food, we can divide and not worry about bringing popcorn bowls back.

Dear Members: Another year has begun and the first month of the year is almost gone.

Everyone is preparing for all the coming activities including the Taroky and Domino Tournaments. Hope all of you have a very successful new year.

Our January meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m. for the first time by our new President Mary Alice Langlotz.

Flags were presented by Ashley Locke and Alicia Neslony. Alicia Neslony led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Motto.

Guide Dorothy Shilling held the roll call and all officers were present.

Visitors were Blanche Lewis and Mary Petterson. Everyone was asked to remain standing for a moment of silence for our deceased members, Sister Angela Poehls and Sister Ella May Magee.

Secretary Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of the previous meeting and

they were approved.

Sister Pruitt then read correspondence from the Supreme Lodge concerning the upcoming Domino and Taroky Tournaments.

She also had the new by - law books from the 1988 convention. She then read a thank you from the families of Sister Angela Poehls and Brother Ed Mazanec, Sr. There was a discussion about Lodge 66 possibly holding one of the tournaments at our lodge.

Board of Trustees minutes were read

by Sister Jeanette Smith who happens to be our new vice president. She also is our new fraternal activities coordinator. She reported that the practice for the Domino Tournaments will start February 13th at 7 p.m. at the lodge hall. Anyone interested in playing may call Sister Jeanette Smith.

Entertainment Committee report was given by Sister Locke and it was that members are to bring casseroles for the February meeting.

Sister Locke sent sympathy cards to the Angela Poehl family, Ella May Magee family, Mr. and Mrs. A.D. Urbanovsky and Ed Mazanec, Jr. She sent a get well card to Sue Pauling and baby congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Joey Cvik el.

Our youth leader reported that 19 members and 8 adults were present at the youth meeting. Sister Yates reported the club donated money to three charitable causes in December; they also donate to Linden Hall and Sister Libbie Parma Trust Fund. She also reported they would make Valentine boxes for the February meeting, which will be judged and then auctioned off to the highest bidders.

She then reported the youth will have the kitchen open for our Saturday night dances.

Sister Parma gave the Trust Fund report. She received a memorial donation to the Trust Fund for Ed Mazanec, Sr. by Frank and Libbie Parma. She also received a check from the Youth Club.

The Auditing Committee chairman reported that all the books were in good shape.

Shilling, George Brother bookkeeper, gave the quarterly report.

New members accepted were Ashley E. Wallace, Kelly Ann Reynolds and Justin Engelke. Dear Members and SPJST Friends: Our meeting was called to order by President Bohac at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 8th. All the members present were asked to rise to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and to remain standing in memory of our departed members.

The first order of business was to install the elected officers of Lodge 80 for 1989. Yours truly (Honorary President Joe Barabas, Jr. of Lodge 80) had the honor and privilege to install the following officers: President - D.I. Bohac, Vice President-Harold Rohde, Secretary and Treasurer - Glen Latham, Financial Secretary - Glenda Liles and Reporter - Joe Barabas, Jr. After the installation, the officers took their positions.

Brother Glen Latham read the minutes of the December 1988 meeting and, with a minor correction, they were adopted as read. The secretary also gave a lengthy report of the income and expenses for 1988. A big hand of applause was given to Secretary Latham for the work he is doing for Lodge 80.

The Rules and Regulations of our lodge were discussed and explained.

We donated $100 to the Mexia State School and $100 to the SPJST Cemetery at Holland, Texas. This was donated from the SPJST Games Fund.

The lights in the hall were discussed.

The subject is that there wasn't enough light in the center of the main hall during our games. A motion was made

by Brother Rhode, commander of the American Legion Post No. 526 of Holland, that the Post would donate 50 percent of the cost to install fluorescent lights in the center of our main hall and leave the decorated lights as they are. The motion was seconded and approved by the members. This will provide much more light when we need it.

As I go along here, I have a copy of the Vestnik before me that was edited

by Brother Nick Morris, who was the editor of the Vestnik at that time. it was printed October 30, 1963. I want to mention that we dedicated and celebrated the opening of our new hall.

(The present one) on October 20, 1963.

Brother Nick had a nice writeup about the opening of our lodge hall when, I guess, we had from 1300 to 1500 people present at the opening. At that time I was president of Lodge 80, and Supreme Lodge Edward L. Marek would come out quite often while we were constructing the building. I recollect one evening they came to see how we were coming along with the structure. I think it was 104 degrees.

They said "How in the world can you all stand this heat?" We were putting on the roof at that time. This copy of the Vestnik is turning yellow with age, but I am proud of it. I kept every copy of the Vestnik since we dedicated the hall in 1963. I save every copy, except some I may have given to someone or Mary by mistake, threw in the waste basket. I have a stack about six feet high on the organ in a closed - in porch. I have about 80 copies of the Literary Digest. Some time ago, a person had an ad in the Temple Daily Telegram and wanted a certain copy of the above - mentioned magazine about 10 years ago. I answered his ad and told the person I had one. He gave me $7.50 for it. He wanted to give me more but I would not accept. To you younger people, keep some things that you have or read about because you will be glad you did 60 and 70 years from now .

I have some farming tools that are 80 - 85 years old. I got some of them from my father. I have a one - horse planter to plant corn or cotton which is 90 years old. First, to use this planter, you had to prepare your seed bed in the wintertime. You would take a turning plow; this was a 10 - inch moldboard plow pulled by two horses (or mules). If it was cotton stalk ground, you would take this plow and throw the dirt away from the stalk on each side and then you would take a middle buster plow and plow out the stumps of the cotton plant. Of course, stalks were destroyed some day when the` round was frozen, and they would breakup like peppermint stick candy.

In other words, you would go three times to make one planting bed for the next planting. What a change now 6 to 8 rows at one time! During planting time, you would take this middle buster with two animals to open the bed, followed by this one-horse planter to plant corn or cotton.

The best improvement in those days was a little one horse plow. They called it "The Go Devil." That was a plow mostly to lay by the corn crop. It had a little steel wheel back of the single tree and had 3 plows; 2 of these moldboard types and one sweep in the back of the 2 side type plows.

Brother Otto Hanus asked me some time after they opened the museum at the SPJST Home Office. if he could locate one of this type. I told him I had one so I donated it to the SPJST Museum.

Yes, they say they were the good old days, think about it!

Lodge No. 92, Ft. Worth Dear Members and Friends: The year of 1989 has come so we bid farewell to the old year; our hope is that the coming year will be better and will treat us all well healthwise.

It seems that all who did celebrate New Year's Eve at dances all had good times and had no casualties or accidents going home. The weather did cooperate very nicely so that made a difference.

Our first meeting of 1989 was well attended but we need to get more younger members interested in fraternal lodge work. I am sure the other lodges over the state have the same problem. Let's hope someone some day will come up with a good idea that will get more members to attend meetings. I do remember years ago, before TV, the meetings were always well attended and all worked for a good SPJST. It seems that sports have taken away our younger members. The SPJST is trying hard to bring members together. They haVe started playing volleyball, "42", Taroky and other games of interest in the lodges; our older members need to encourage our children and youth to keep up the good things the lodge has to offer; it is also good to hear from different members and reporters, who write to the Vestnik that they are doing fine reporting from their lodges; this way we get to keep up with our fellow members. A person doesn't know who reads our articles so we do try to keep them interesting.

I wish to thank our Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar for keeping up with what we write in the Vestnik and also for what goes on in the lodges. I always enjoy reading from each reporter; that way we can compare our lodge with other local lodges. The reporters are doing a wonderful job; also at times a member will write something that is good to read. It is hard for a reporter to write without the help of the members.

The Vestnik is a nice Czech paper and our editor and his wife are doing a splendid job. They help correct our spelling and wording. I do hope that members will want to continue receiving the Vestnik; it is free to members so they can keep up with the good progress SPJST is making.

Our Youth Club led us in the pledge and, as always, they recited and led the membership in the pledge. The officers always give an interesting report on the progress we are doing. Lodge No. 92 is always doing nice things for its members. The lodge does pay members over 65 years of age their lodge dues and has done so for many years; also flowers are sent to the members who pass away. There are so many things that our lodge does for us that I am most proud to be part of Lodge No. 92. We have a slogan on our wall that says: "This is our home and could be yours." So all you Sales Representatives get out and try to get new members with the good insurance the SPJST offers. Our Sales Representatives did a lot of work the past two months; several members were secured and a transfer was accepted to our lodge. It was asked that we give our Sales Representative Albert Kubala a nice hand for the applications which really did amount in big figures. Congratulations to you, Brother Albert and to other Sales Representatives.

The Board of Trustees still have some work in completion on the work inside of the hall. Now, that the

holidays are over, things will get into order and settle down. We are proud of our hall because it is always kept up - to - date. The managers see that it is clean and polished, Joyce and Frank Tesar, Jr. always decorate the hall for dances and parties which looks so nice.

I believe the ladies enjoy the new kitchen with the large sinks to wash dishes and pots. I have not been able to get in to help so far, but as soon as the new wears off they will be glad to have me to help. The food for the past meeting was prepared by Al and Alene Kercho and it was very tasty and always plenty to eat. All ladies are thanked for the pastries they bring.

Our game nights are back on schedule and we want more to attend; we will teach you the games we play.

Once you come and play you will not want to miss the night that we play.

We always have at least four tables and more of Taroks and, if you want Poker, there will also be players ready.

The game nights are on the first and third Tuesday of the month. We play from 7 to 10 p.m. It's lots of fun, especially if you win. Oh, by the way, thanks to Sister Victoria Murphy for sending the candy to the players. It was enjoyed very much even though we didn't have to put on the extra weight.

Next month, the meeting will start at 2 p.m. sharp, because there will be a dance starting at 4 p.m. Brother Kubala has orders to start the meeting right at 2 p.m. Members who are in the hall before 2 p.m. on February 12th (no late exceptions) will receive free hamburgers and a free ticket to the dance. This is a Valentine Dance and the music will be furnished by Henry Rejcek. The dance is from 4 to 8 p.m., so be sure if you come to the meeting, be there before 2 p.m. THIS DEAL IS FOR LODGE NO. 92 MEMBERS ONLY! During the meeting word was received that Henry John Langer passed away. Henry Langer had a nice writeup in a recent Vestnik issue. He loved to play the accordian and he was loved by many friends.

Our Sunshine Chairperson Martha Durham sent cards to members over 65 years of age and for December and January 32 cards were sent to them on their birthday. Get well cards were sent to Brothers Joe Zacek and Rudy Wruble and Sister Clara Cohen. Anna Leshikar had surgery recently. We extend get well wishes to all these members and expect them back at our meetings, soon.

Lodge No. 133, San Antonio The Lodge No. 133 officers (pictured) were re - elected for the 1989 year.

President Trilicek became president of Lodge 133 January 1, 1985 and has done a tremendous job keeping the lodge active. Brother Trilicek first became active as a social member and enjoyed what he saw and he became a member by buying an insurance policy; later, he was appointed to the Entertainment Committee and did so well that the president of Lodge 133 saw the potential leadership in him to get some new ideas for the lodge and asked Brother Trilicek to allow the Nominating Committee to recommend

After a careful study he finally agreed and was elected president in 1985. This was one of the best things that could have happened to Lodge 133.

Brother Dominic F. Netek agreed to stay on one more year and help with the transition because of the retirement of the president and retirement of Sister Viola (Mazac) Kurtz.

Sister Kathy Uribe was elected treasurer and served in 1985 to 1986.

Brother Dominic Netek retired in 1986 and Sister Jarolyn (Matula) Popp was elected secretary for 1986 - 1987 and, by combining the secretary and treasurer positions, she was elected to hold both offices in 1988 and was re elected for the 1989 term.

Brother Trilicek, who retired from the railroad, has done Lodge 133 an outstanding job and, with the younger people serving in office, has been successful in getting a Youth Club started under the leadership and direction of Sister Frankie Campbell.

Brother Mares who has served as president on several occasions and vice president for the past 12 years, has been a great asset to the president's position. Brother Mares, a veteran who served in Medical Corps during WW II and as owner of a business and finally retired from Civil Service, has contributed his skills to SPJST Lodge 133 for the past 30 years.

Sister Jarolyn Popp, who is on leave - of - absence from teaching, has taken a great interest in Lodge 133 insurance

sales and has produced many members for the lodge. She is one of the 25 finalists to win the Bahama trip.

After President Vincent Hechler called the January 11 meeting of Danbury Lodge No. 139 to order, a moment of silence was observed in memory of our recently - deceased member, Bennie Heiman.

Lonnie Lostak gave the treasurer's report and Helen Filipp, financial secretary, gave her report and read correspondence received since the last meeting.

A barbecue for all lodge members was scheduled for March 11 with Lorenda Baldwin being in charge of making the arrangements. Members will receive reservation notices for the barbecue in February. Helen Filipp and Catherine Hechler will serve on the Dessert Committee.

Dear Readers: I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the member ,, and guests who were able to attend our Christmas Party on Friday, December 16th and make it such a g reat success.

A. special thanks to Sister Rosie Tumis and her kitchen staff for preparing such a delicious meal and to our past Youth Leader Elizabeth Hermis and the Lodge Youth Club for a fine play and also to Henry Hermis, Sr. for being our Santa Claus. Sunday, January 8th, at 2 p.m., President Dennis Hermis called our monthly meeting to order.

We had 42 members, 6 visitors and 7 youth members present who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Secretary Alice Jochen held roll call of officers. All were present. The secretary then read the minutes from our previous meetin g , which stood approved as read without any corrections. All other officers' reports were also read.

Board of Trustees and Bar reports were read by Rosie Schilhab.

Youth Club report was read Matthew Mabry.

New members for the month were Joshua P. Wisnoski, Emil Ktra, Jr., Richard D. Lawhorn, Barbara S. Boyd, Robert A. Boyd and Shannon Marie Boyd. Sales Representative Sidon Tumis wrote 3 new members and 6 increased insurance policies; Robert Kieschnick wrote 3 new members and one increased insurance policy. One transfer to our Lodge No. 142 was Leonard Wasicek from Lodge No 139. We welcome Brother Wasicek.

Sick Committee reports Michael Schleider, son of Bob and Patricia Schleider is in the hospital. We hope he is feeling much bet t L.r by this time.

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting yesterday started out with a beautiful sunshiny day. We were lucky escaping the sleet and ice that was predicted the day before.

Our meeting was called to order by President Brother Jerry Milan. All the officers were present and we all recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Sister Mary Renfro read the minutes of our November meeting, since we did not meet in December.

They were approved as read.

Sister Mary Hale's treasurer report was also approved as read A thank you expression was read from Brother Frank Picha.

Youth Leader Sister Carolyn Cleveland reported 13 youth members and 4 adults attended Holiday - in - the - Park, and that it was enjoyed by all.

She also received a nice thank you note from our State Youth Director Sister Claudette Reese for the pin presented her and how much she and her family enjoyed the program.

Sister Mary Pavey reported on all the Christmas, get well and sympathy cards sent.

Brother Milan reported on attending 2 seminars, at Lodge 92 and Lodge 84, which he enjoyed and said they were very informative. It was good to hear all the happenings with our Fraternal Insurance. We all should be very proud of our Society.

He also read the correspondence from the Supreme Lodge, so that the members would know the premium amount mailed to the Headquarters and on our percentage increase to our lodge.

Brother Milan extended his special thanks to all who helped make our Metroplex Lodges' Christmas Party, our Lodge 154 and Sokol Christmas Party and our Big New Year's Eve Party such a success. We had a very busy December and our volunteer workers are the greatest. God bless you all!

We're happy that all our travelers arrived home safely. Sister Mary Jan Stoeppelman flew to Chicago to take her granddaughter, Abbe Eaton, home. Abbe had a long visit in Fort Worth. Sister Sherri Mason just returned from 10 days in Los Angeles, where she has been a frequent visitor.

Sister Debbie and Dr. Alan Stockard returned New Year's Day from a cruise to several islands on their honeymoon.

Congratulations! Debbie is the daughter of Brother Emil and Sister Sally Milan.

Brother Rome Milan returned from Colorado Springs where he attended the International Judging Course, where he was one of the judges in the highest rating in the United States.

Brother Brad Durham, along with Mila Waldauf and Wade Garrett got in last night from Chicago after teaching a course at Sokol Stickney.

Sokol Fort Worth invites you to attend their Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday, January 29th. Dinner will be served from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.; adults $4.50, children 12 and under - $3, with" salad, dessert and drink. There will be a short program following with a special guest, Lance Ringnald, the U.S. Olympian winner in Seoul, Korea and at the age of 18 years is the top gymnast in the United States. He resides in New Mexico; also our last living charter member of Sokol Fort Worth, Sister Frances Tirk (a member of Lodge 92), will be honored.

Jerry Max Lane will be back Saturday, February 4 for a country/western dance.

A group of our members attended an open house Sunday, January 8 in the beautiful home of Brother Sid and Sister Justine Pokladnik -- such great hosts.

We wish them much happiness and good health. It was good to see Brother Joe Pokladnik recovering so well after his stroke. Keep it up, Brother Joe; missed you, Roy. She had the flu.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Sister Hattie Oujesky and family on the loss of her husband, Joe L. Oujesky. May he rest in peace.

After congratulating the officers who pledged their fraternal services for the coming year, Brother Kohutek spoke of the progress made by our Supreme Lodge and Convention -approved future kinds of insurance plans/benefits, also a possibility of permanent youth camp. His inspirational talk was enjoyed by all.

Janet Hejl was the lucky door prize winner of a beautiful set of SPJST Dominoes. Dr. Svatava Jakubson was a winner of a large violet "Proud Country" compliments of the reporter.

The remainder of the afternoon was spent in socializing with members.

Our Vice President Sister Mina Sponberg and husband, Cr arles, were unable to attend due to her brother's death and funeral in Dallas -- Mr. Joe

Manda. Please accept our heartfelt sympathy, Mina. Her cousin, Leona Kind, was buried at the same time in Taylor. Another member, Georgia Mae Matejek Robertson, lost her sister, Lorraine Matejek Thrasher, a U.T. graduate about two months ago in Austin. She taught school in several cities and later worked at Nau's Drug Store here for a number of years.

Georgia Mae, may the memories of happier times soon soften the sadness you feel.

On January 5th, Alice Prasatik suffered a knee fracture and was admitted by ambulance to the cardiac floor of St. David's Hospital for 5 days. She is recuperating nicely with a cast and walker.

The next meeting scheduled for February 5th at 2:30 p.m. will be held at Sister Georgia Mae and Louis Robertson's home, 11200 Pearce

Dear Members: It's a new year so let's try a new year's recipe: Take 12 fine, full grown months; see that these are thoroughly free from all old memories of bitterness, rancor, hate and jealousy. Cleanse them completely from every clinging spite; pick off all specks of pettiness. Cut these months into 30 or 31 equal parts. Do not attempt to make the whole batch at one time, but prepare one day at a time as follows: Into each day, put equal parts of faith, patience, courage, kindness, rest, prayer and meditation. Add about a teaspoonful of good spirits, a dash of fun, a pinch of folly, a sprinkling of play and a heaping cupful of good humor. Pour love into the whole and mix with vim. Serve with quietness, unselfishness and cheerfulness -- Author Unknown.

The meeting of 1989 was held on January 8th. A small group attended this meeting. Maybe some forgot, some were ill and football took care of the rest. It was a good meeting and discussions were on ways to improve cooperation and fraternalism among members and to get more members interested in activities at the lodge.

Members who had been ill the past month were Cecil and Martha Phillips, Irene Pustejovsky, Terry Lincoln and Jeanne Roznos' granddaughter; the most were home and improving. I hear that Cecil is still ill and unable to go to work because of the flu. Hope everyone gets better and can get this new year on the road; also best wishes to those who the officers don't know about.

The year 1988 was a difficult year and Lodge 183 made it standing on its own two feet and looking to 1989 and ways to improve. The officers are asking YOU, the members, to give us your ideas and advice to help make 1989 a better year.

Doris Laws was voted and approved as a new member. We hope her membership will be a long and happy one with SPJST. She has already been busy helping around the lodge, the lodge needs more members like her.

Jud Bassett has taken over the kitchen as of the first of the year; we wish him well and hope for a successful year.

The Silverado band will be playing for your dancing pleasure on Saturday, February 11. This is a very good band so let's come out and support your lodge and band; music to start at 8:30 p.m.; bring your trienas, family and neighbors and have a big crowd at this dance.

Lodge No. 188, Centerville Dear Members: Lodge 188 has changed its monthly meeting from the third Monday to the first Monday of each month. We would like to have as many members as possible to attend.

We are also having games now on Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m. and Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. We have been having some really good crowds and lots of fun, so bring a friend and come out. The kitchen is open with good food so you can eat while playing.

We've gotten a lot of new bands coming this year plus a lot of our favorite regular ones. Make plans to come out on Saturday night. The music starts at 9 p.m. and ends at 1 a.m.

No. 88 Birthday Club News

Lodge

Mrs. Anna Hoffman, a faithful Birthday Club member lost her husband, Bill Hoffman on December 14th. He was buried at Forest Park Cemetery on December 16th. His nephews were pallbearers. He was born in Bauer, Texas on February 19, 1898.

After his primary education, in a German - speaking school at Rose Hill, he continued his education. After high school, he took a business course and went to work for his Uncle Robert Griffin at Griffin Machine, Reed Roller Bit and then went in business for himself helping found Victor Oil Company. He was active in buying oil leases, real estate, raising Santa Gertrudis cattle and Quarter I lorses.

Mr. Hoffman married Anna Kubenka of Weimar in 1940 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. In 1963 they adopted a son, William Alan.

Mr. Hoffman was a member of Lodge 88 and other fraternal organizations.

Anna said he was a very good husband and father and she will miss him very much. You have our sincere sympathy.

The Birthday Club sisters served a dinner at Lodge 88 to the family after the funeral.

January 11, 1989, the Birthday Club met at Lodge 88 in the dining room at 11:15 a.m. for our regular monthly meeting and luncheon with President Kathy Trefell presiding. She opened the meeting with the roll call and the members accepted Lowrina Lindemann as a new member unanimously.

Secretary Rosalee Kostom read the minutes of the December meeting, which were approved as read. She also read correspondence from Anna Hoffman and Lillie Johnson.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave a monthly report and the annual report in detail. Lillie is very capable in handling our finances.

Ticket Chairman Evelyn Mikolas also gave an annual report, which was very good.

Here is a correction on my Telephone Committee -- they are Bessie Dewer, chairman, Rita Alexander, Margaret Bohac and Juanita Simons. I am so sorry I made this error.

10/VESTNiK—Wednesday, January 25, 1989 Schaefer Pfannstiel, who was born June 26, 1901 and died December 23, 1988. Her funeral was at St. Paul United Church in Cibolo, Texas. The Birthday 'Club sisters extend their sympathy to you.

Mary Kosut gave the sunshine report -- she mailed 15 cards; sympathy, get well and Christmas cards.

Pearl Hanka thanked everyone who sent Christmas cards to Mama Hanka.

Mrs. Hanka appreciated these cards and used to write thank you notes, but it's becoming a chore, so I told her I'd thank all for her.

Thanks to Tilly Bily for her donations every year and also to Frank Tilich who donated a 10 - pound box of Tide as a door prize in memory of his deceased wife, Mary, who had a birthday in January. I must say we really miss Mary and also Emily Bily, and many others who have been so active in our club.

President Kathy asked for a donation of pastry for our yearly anniversary which is February 12th; also we will have a drawing on Splash Day this year.

The Calcutta game was won by Willie Mae Stang and Juanita Simons.

President Kathy's gift was won by Edna Froelich, and gift donated by Rosalee was won by Tilly Bily and a gift donated by Helen Hegwood was won by Alma McNaspy.

Our cooks for February are Della Kadlecek, Josephine Buri, Bessie Dewer and Esther Holton.

Our January birthday sisters were Marie Pokluda, Margaret Bohac and Ima Lero. We sang "Happy Birthday" to all except Ima Lero who was absent.

Mary Kosut dismissed us with a prayer and grace at 11:50 a.m.

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting was called to order by our Vice President Rose Steinman.

Our President Jo Prochaska had a prior commitment.

Rose welcomed our guests, Emily Kaichum, sister of Annie Belota and Bessie Prochaska, Jewel Clark and Carol Sanders and new son, Billy Wade, Jr. She extended New Year's greetings to all and led the 30 members present and guests in the pledge to our flag.

We were sorry to hear our Secretary Merel Kovar was ill; she is doing better, and Mary Pavey read the minutes of our December meeting.

They were approved after a minor correction.

Our Treasurer Lydia Alholm gave a good report. She also read a nice "Thank you" from St. Theresa's Home for our donation.

Anna Johnson reported on cards sent to Linda Rangel and Mary Dunlap; they both had surgery. We extend our prayers and good wishes.

Billy Starr reported our hostesses for the February meeting will be Annie Whitsell, Anna Johnson and Geneva Hennessey; it will be a covered dish for a hot meal, weather permitting. We had a summer - like day for our January meeting.

We have 2 quilts donated, again, by Mollie Walker who will be 95 next month. One will be given away at our June meeting and then at our Thanksgiving Family Night.

Glasses Program At Lodge No. 88 9 Houston

Yes, we still do -- do what') Still collect eye glasses for Eyes For The Needy Program. This is in answer to the many inquiries received about used eye glasses.

Eye glasses are still needed to help local needy individuals in obtaining glasses at greatly reduced cost by using "eye cards" that are furnished by the Houston Lighthouse.

Please continue helping as you have in the past and those who have not contributed may be able to do so at your next eye glass prescription change.

(Smokey) Stover, lodge member and also Past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Council Number 2917 -"Smokey" has ram - rodded the used eye glass program at the KC and has just recently turned in 91 pairs to your Fraternal Activities Coordinator -thanks to KC Council Number 2917.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Activities Dear Members, The Youth Club meeting was held January 8th after the lodge meeting with a fair attendance.

They reported bringing cakes to the West Rest Haven for their Birthday Party and visited with the residents.

I want to thank all the youngsters who helped with the Christmas Program and also for the donation for the money - making project. Thank you, very much!

The Youth Club did not get to go with the District III group on December 16th to Holiday - in - the Park and to Lodge No. 84 Party, because we were all sick with colds and flu. I know we missed a good time.

Christmas gifts were taken by our youth to the rest home on Decmeber 20th and each resident received a gift.

All our youth received their entry forms for 1989 T - Shirt Design Contest.

A Valentine Party is scheduled for February 10th, so we will be making Valentine items for this party.

January 22nd plans were made to go bowling at TSTI Campus between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m. for all invited members.

The Youth Club is planning a hayride and wiener roast plus a bake sale before Easter for our project.

They are selling birthday, get well and sympathy cards, plus knives and District III SPJST Cookbooks (which will make nice wedding gifts).

Remember, the Youth Club dues are due so give them to Tammi Dobecka or the Youth Leaders.

The minutes of our previous meeting were accepted as read. Our treasurer reported our current balance.

Under old business, our Youth Leader discussed our Parent Appreciation Dinner planned for February 19th. Members are asked to get to the hall around 11:30 a.m.

Members will serve their parents. A meeting will follow. Our bake sale is planned for February 3rd. It will be held in front of First State Bank.

There was no new business.

Birthday celebrants of the month were Tony Ford and Jamie Cottrell.

Wa sang "Happy Birthday" to them.

The meeting was adjourned. We then took down Christmas decorations.

Bryan Lodge 39 Youth Plan Activity Dear SPJST Readers, The Lodge No. 39 Bryan youth held their monthly meeting on January 8, 1989 at our lodge home at 3 p.m.

President Jennifer Kubin called upon }Crystal Macik to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.

We had ten members, one social member and five adults present.

We have a balance of $176.91 in our treasury. Our social for this month will be a dollar movie at the Schulim Six Theater in Bryan, it will be held on January 29th.

We had several door prize winners and many programs. We also discussed YAD; many of us had great ideas for our talents and crafts, again.

I hope to see everyone on January 29th.

47 Seaton Youth Goes Bowling Lodge

I wrote a letter earlier saying the Youth Club would be going bowling if the weather wasn't bad. Well, we had bad weather earlier in the week, but the weather was real nice Sunday, January 15th. We had a very large turnout and everyone had a lot of fun.

We bowled and some of us even played games in the game room.

The weather was a lot nicer Sunday, January 15th than, Friday, the 13th.

When my brother, Daryl (State King), little brother, David and I were going to school (Friday the 13th), we had a wreck; none of us really got hurt, except Daryl popped his neck and

shoulder and his car was totaled. We were really lucky.

47 Seaton YC Discuss Events Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers, The January meeting of Lodge No. 47 was called to order by President Daryl Kortis at 2:15 p.m. Mark Greger led the Pledge of Allegiance and Club Motto.

There were 37 members, 7 adults and 4 visitors, Jennifer Kohutek, Heather Novosad, Lisa Greger, Sara and David Hejl.

Secretary Michelle Skrabanek read the minutes and they were approved.

Birthdays this month are for Heather Novosad, Billy Holt and Jennifer Pechal.

This month's social was a Bowling Party at the Bowling Alley in Temple on January 15th at 2 p.m. January 20th was Family Night.

Door prizes were won by Michael Morris and David Koslovsky.

Our next meeting will be February 5th at 2 p.m. The meeting was adjourned at 3 p.m.

88 Houston Youth Activities

Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters, On Saturday, January 14, the youth of Lodge 88 Youth Club held their social for the month of January. The social took place at Trade Winds Roller Rink from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.

We met at Trade Winds from 1:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Approximately 20 youth members attended this social.

Once everybody got their skates on, we were all ready to have what we all knew was going to be a great social. If you don't like to rollerskate, there were still plenty of things you could do and still have fun. There were games, video games or you could go to the snack bar. Those who considered themselves good skaters could compete in races (individual or pairs), so you can see that no matter what you like to do, there was something there for you.

Mostly, all members of our Youth Club found it fun to spend the entire time skating. Even our Youth Leader Barbara Linney could be seen out on the rink.

After everyone had the chance to skate, we all met in the snack bar for some refreshments, but not many youth members sat down long, for the races were about to begin. Our Youth Club had at least one member competing in each category.

Afterwards, we returned to the snack bar and finished our drinks.

Everyone was sad when 5 o'clock came. I think I can speak, on behalf of all the youth members, when I say that this was a great social. I hope our Youth Club returns to Trade Winds soon for another social. We all had fun skating and being with close friends.

Thanks to everyone who made it such a fun social!

Our Youth Club's next meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 1st at 7:30 p.m. I hope to see everybody there. Also, don't forget to come to the lodge each Thursday night to help out in the kitchen and the bake sales to raise money to go to our "San Antonio Express" trip this summer. Many of our youth members have been working real hard, but we still need more money so we can do more things and visit more places in San Antonio, so be sure and drop by the lodge on any Thursday night during games to help out. Remember, you must work a majority of these Thursdays in order to attend this exciting trip. A year ago, it seemed it was a long way off and it wasn't really going to happen, but time flies fast and our District V trip is not a dream anymore! We've already set a date and, to find out more information, come to the meeting and keep watching for more news in our newsletters.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Monday night, December 12, 1988, the Youth Club of Lodge 88 presented their Christmas Program that they worked long and hard on since the beginning of November. The program was opened with MC Marlene Migl introducing Lodge 88 President Jerry Ermis who gave a wonderful welcome to all gathered.

Next, the wonderful Lodge 88 Choral Group along with the Youth Club members, parents, and leaders sang many popular Christmas Carols such as "Joy to the World" and "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas."

The most exciting and long - awaited event of the evening began -- the Youth Club's Christmas Play, "The Nativity." The script was written by Crystal Wallace. The director, along with DYC Marie Stayton, Youth Leader arbara Linney and Lou Groendes, was Crystal Wallace.

Mistress of Ceremony was none other than the District .V Youth Club President (1988 - 89) Marlene Migl.

The dedicated and determined cast for the Youth Club's Christmas Play about the Christ Child's birth were the following: Narrator I and IV -- Darlene Migl Narrator II -- Michelle Linney Narrator III -- Melissa Havemann Shepherds -- Angela Gloria, Julio Gloria, Nicholas Havemann Angels -- Cindy Groendes, Amanda Havemann, Jamie Meyer, Kristy Sokol Wise Men -- Darren, Havemann, Jason Michalak, Michael Williams Innkee per -- Michael Williams King Herod -- Marlene Migl Keeper of Book -- Cole Vick Head Angel -- Lindsey Michalak Mary -- Tommie Wallace Joseph -- Brian Havemann Following the four - act play, the Choral Group joined the youth following the bows and sang "Jingle Bells" to help in the arrival of the long - awaited Santa Claus. Finally, with the loud and joyful singing, Santa came full of presents for all.

After each child sat on Santa's lap and had his picture taken, he was given a bag of fruit and candy bagged by the youth members themselves. Thanks to Angela Clayton, Daryl Havemann, Cole Vick, Lillian Clayton, Julie Caton, and Christine Porter for helping Santa out by giving each child their bag while Santa continued to do what he does best -- talking to wonderful little children.

Also during Santa's visit, Crystal Wallace announced the names of the people who had a gift under the tree from their friends and families.

Michelle Linney, Darlene Migl and Marlene Migl handed out the gifts to each of the lucky receivers, also all members of the Youth Club did receive a gift from the lodge.

Finally, as always happens at the end of a movie or television show, credits must come at the end of my letter; they were also at the end of the program handed out 7:30 p.m.

Monday night. Choral music was provided by the Lodge 88 Choral Group who I must say did an excellent job singing with the youth. Art work for the play was done by Darlene and Marlene Migl who along with Cole Vick did the props that were used.

by Darlene Migl; also, the parents did a great job helping out: Ronnie Havemann took care of the stage curtains, all mothers made their children's costumes, and Cheryl Michalak, along with her committee, was responsible for the wonderful refreshments of cookies and lime sherbet - Sprite floats. Also, all youths are grateful to Sister Helen Hegwood for singing "Away in a Manger" so beautifully during the play.

Finally, I thank the cast of the Christmas Play for being so cooperative and putting up with me as your youth director. I want to thank all who came out and hope that you enjoyed the program. I also wish to thank our roving photographers Nancy Steubing and, especially, picture - happy Gene Gloria!

Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 36 West, on behalf of our entire membership, express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother RAYMOND A. URBANOVSKY, who passed away in a Temple health care facility on December 27, 1988 at the age of 87.

Services were held at 2 p.m.

Thursday, December 29, 1988 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, with Monsignor Arthur Michalka officiating. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 28th at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West.

Brother Raymond was born on November 11, 1901 near West in McLennan County, Texas, the son of John and Josephine Urbanovsky.

After completing studies in the West schools, he enrolled in the commercial department of St. Mary's College, La Porte, Texas. During the first year at St. Mary's, he was forced to abandon studies, being stricken with scarlet fever; enrolled and graduated with honors from the Toby's Business College, Waco, Texas in 1921. He was employed as bookkeeper and salesman in various business establishments in West, Houston, San Antonio and Hillsboro.

In 1933 he was appointed City Secretary, Assessor and Collector of Taxes of City of West where he was employed until 1942 when he was called to the service of the country in World War II. After his discharge from service, he returned to his employment with the City of West until July 1943 when he was appointed Financial Secretary of the Supreme Lodge and held that position until December 31, 1960. He also served as Supreme Lodge Secretary for the period from January 1, 1961 until his retirement on December 31, 1972.

Brother Urbanovsky is survived by his wife, Hattie; his daughter, Dorothy Stiff; two sisters, Hattie Lednicky and Vlasta Makovy; two brothers, Joe Urbanovsky and Henry Urbanovsky.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Joe Baros, Sr. on September 1, 1974.

BEN NIE HEIMAN, who passed away Saturday, January 7, 1989 at the age of 70 in the Angleton Danbury Hospital.

A resident of Danbury for 46 years, Brother Heiman was born in Shiner, Texas on December 15, 1918. He was married to Jeannie Dubuisson on July 15, 1942.

Brother Heiman was well - known in the area as a rancher and the owner of Heiman's Meat Market in Danbury which he operated for 25 years. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, the SPJST and RVOS. Preceded in death by a son, Frank Delano (Lanny), in 1969, Brother Heiman is survived by his wife, Jeannie Heiman of Danbury; one daughter and son - in - law, Pat and Louis Vrazel of Danbury and four grandchildren, Jarrod Vrazel, Jason Vrazel, Brent Vrazel and Lisa Vrazel.

The rosary for Brother Heiman was recited by Father Joseph Kalladan and lather Anthony Orlando in the Palms Chapel of Roses in Angleton on Sunday, January 8 at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass was celebrated Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with the Reverend Kalladan officiating.

Serving as pallbearers were Vincent Hechler, Jimmy Jordan, Tommie Lostak, Robert Peltier, Gene Smith and Dr. Wayne K. Steele.

CA RRIE POLASEK, who died Thursday morning, October 13, 1988 in Leisure Lodge Nursing Center. She had been a resident in the home since February 1984.

Funeral services for Carrie Julie Polasek, 93, of Caldwell, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 15, in Phillips - Luckey Chapel with Rev. Daniel Marek and Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating. Special music was rendered by her grandson James Polasek, organist and granddaughter Kay Kolask and Annie Polasek Runnels singers. Interment was in the New Tabor uemeiery.

Born January 18, 1895 in Burleson County to the late Frank and Rose Elsik Hronek, she was a lifelong resident of Burleson County, Texas.

She was a homemaker, enjoyed her home, flowers and gardening. She was a member of the Caldwell Brethren Church and, in early years, as active with the Brethren Church Christian Sisters.

She was married to John Anton Polasek on August 8, 1922 in Caldwell by the Rev. Frank Horak. He preceded her in death December 15, 1976. She was also preceded in death oy a son - in - law, Alvin W. Wotipka on June 15, 1983; a great - grandson, Michael Edward Huffman on August 28, 1987 and by four brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include one son, Bennie L. Polasek and daughter - in - law, Annie Polasek of Caldwell; one daughter, Lillie D. Wotipka of Caldwell; eleven grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were grandsons and grandsons - in - law, Alvin J. Wotipka, Edward Wotipka, Ray Wotipka, Ben L. Polasek, Jr., S.R. Polasek, David Polasek, Joseph J. Polasek, Roger Runnel, Guy Huffman and Johnny Kramer.

He married Ruby Helen Gage on December 2, 1944 at Caldwell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, Lillie Urbanovsky; four brothers, Emil Urbanovsky, Frank Urbanovsky, John Urbanovsky and Kverin (Quitty) Urbanovsky.

Brother Cervenka was born November 6, 1930 in Lavaca County, Texas and was a resident of Jackson County since 1964. He was a mechanic and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include three daughters, Arlene Neumann, Laura Ann Cervenka and Doris Gayle Cervenka, all of Edna; a son, Michael Cervenka of Edna; three sisters, Edith Filip of Point Comfort, Georgie Roznovsky of Moulton and Bernice Barborak of Gonzales and tour grandchildren.

Brother Cervenka was preceded in death by a brother Frank Cervenka.

Tuesday, December 20th at the Schwenke - Baumgarten Funeral Home in Schulenburg and Mass was celebrated Wednesday, December 21st at St. Rose Catholic Church with Rev. Richard Filice officiating. Burial followed in the St. Rose Catholic Cemetery, in Schulenburg, under the direction of Schwenke - Baumgarten Funeral Home.

Sister Schramek was born July 1, 1895 in the St. John area, south of Schulenburg, to the late Joe and Anna Kellner.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Herbert 011ie Mendel of Bloomington; three sons, Ira Schramek of Pasadena, Ignac Schramek of San Antonio and Charles Schramek, Jr. of Petersburg, England; two sisters, Mrs. Louisa Ulman of Floresville and Mrs. Lillie Sokol of Slaton; 12 grandchildren, 18 great - grandchildren and two great great - grandchildren.

Expression Of Sympathy

Ernest Vince Morris Ernest Vince Morris of rural St. James in North Meramec Township died at Fort Leonard Wood Army Hospital on December 28, 1988 at age 69, following a short illness of cancer.

Morris was born in Bomarton, Texas on January 20, 1919, son of Czechoslovakian born parents, the late John and Anna Mares Morris.

Morris and his wife were married on V.E. Day, May 8, 1945 while stationed at Pearl Harbor Naval Air Station; his wife being the first U.S. Navy Wave married overseas.

Morris retired from the Navy in 1961 in Illinois at Glenview Naval Air Station as a Chief Petty Officer after 21 years of active service during WW II and the Korean War. He worked the next 10 years as a Quality Control Inspector at Signode Steel Company near Chicago.

In 1969 he relocated with his family to Phelps County, Missouri where in 1970 he was hired as the founding manager of Rolla Area Sheltered Workshop for 14 years.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death in 1966 by a son, U.S. Army PFC John (Jack) Ernest Morris and an older only sister and two older brothers.
