District III Seminars Held In Waco And Fort Worth SFR Jim Wiest held dinner/seminars at Waco Sheraton and Lodge 92, Fort Worth along with District III Director Cyrill (Sid) Pokladnik for the active sales representatives in District III.

Of the producing sales representatives in District III, twenty nine were in attendance at these seminars. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those who are not active to come join

us aboard the SPJST train. We are moving on to bigger and better things.

It costs so little I wonder why We give so little thought, A smile, kind words, a glance, a touch What magic with these is wrought. *** This is the first issue of 1989 and the first issue of your editor's 21st year as Vestnik editor. That this writer would hold that position for 20 consecutive years did not even remotely enter my mind, in that January of 1969! With a feeling that many readers would like to see what your editor wrote in that first issue in 1969, we reprint excerpts from that January 1, 1969 issue. Much of the editorial (about our goals and SPJST) are still true to this date: For the First Time. This is my first editorial to you, our membership, who receive and read the "Vestnik" or "Herald."

I accept this new duty and challenge (and it is a challenge) with the attitude that I intend to do it justice.

I feel honored that you have allowed me the privilege of trying to serve our SPJST in the capacity as editor and I certainly will try to do my best in that capacity. That I will make mistakes, I have no doubt; however, if I do, I assure you that I am human and humble enough to admit them and correct them. However, please do not ask for the unnecessary, impossible, or unfraternal. This is not my, your, or any particular person's publication, but the property of ALL of us in the SPJST. It is OURS, however, and remember that the editor has responsibilities he is bound by from a journalistic standpoint, by the dictates of the convention in the by - laws, close cooperation with the Publication Committee (for which I am grateful), and a moral responsibility, and probably more important than all of the above, to do his best to keep harmony in our Society. Constructive criticism has never hurt anyone, if they are sensible about it; however, let us make sure that it is constructive.

I hope the Czech section continues to exist, as long as there are readers who request it and appreciate it. I hope that all our contributors continue to write those very interesting and educational articles in Czech for our aged readers.

As I sit here writing these lines, listening to the radio in the background, my mind flashes back to my boyhood in the late 20s and early 30s, when I used to attend lectures by Dr. Karel Hujer, a Czech astronomer, educated in Charles University, Prague. My father, with Brother John Nemy, and

other officers of Lodge Liberty 136, had invited Dr. Hujer a number of times to show slides and lecture on astronomy. I understand that he was a professor of Astronomy at Columbia University, the last time I heard of him. He would show slides of the Moon, Mars, Venus ,and other planets, and point out various points with a long pointer and speak of them. He had access to Mt. Palomar and other observatories of the world. He would say that one of these days, we would be at those places, and that the younger people in his audience would live to see it become a fact! I imagine I sat there with my mouth open, just not being able to comprehend how this could be accomplished; however, after witnessing the first radar wave bounced back from the Moon, at 186,000 miles a second, while teaching basic radar school in the Army during World War II, which told the world exactly how far away the Moon was, I realized how right he had been. The radio has just announced that our three astronauts, Borman, Lovell, and Anders, have just begun orbiting the Moon for 20 , hours, after another "burn" of their booster rocket. How I hope (I am sure the entire world), that the rocket will "burn" in the wee hours of December 25th, CST, to send these brave young men back to . Mother Earth and their families for a successful splashdown! I have faith in our technology that it will. How true that Czech song, "Okolo mesice, kola se delaji" ("Around the Moon, Circles are Being Made").

In conclusion, may my wife, our two sons, Terry Craig and Edwin Joseph, and your editor wish you members, readers and ALL, a healthy, happy and prospersous New Year, for after all, health and happiness are just about the most essential ingredients for a full life and, without them, life could not be enjoyed nearly as much. *** The above words, of course, were written 20 years ago and much has happened in that time --- Our SPJST Society has grown much larger and financially stronger with new progressive plans of insurance and fraternal, benevolent activities in place and in future plans. The amount of insurance we would sell at this time in our history and the amount of our investments did not enter our minds even in our dreams, at the time those lines were written 20 years ago! ***

Brother Raymond A. Urbanovsky, age 87, of Temple, formerly of West, died December 27th at a Temple nursing home. Funeral services were held Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, in West, with Monsignor Arthur Michalka officiating. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery. A longtime member of Lodge No. 36, West, Brother Urbanovsky was the former SPJST Supreme Lodge secretary for 30 years. Serving as pallbearers under the auspices of the SPJST included Brothers Bernard Gebala, Leonard Mikeska, Sid Pokladnik and Ben Zabcik; most of the other Supreme Lodge officials and employees were well represented at the funeral. Memorials may be made to SPJST Scholarship Fund or to your favorite charity. Our SPJST Society extends sincere, fraternal sympathy to the surviving family and may he find eternal peace in his place of rest. May we honor his memory now and forever.

Dear Members: Our lodge held its December meeting and Christmas Party on Sunday, December 11, 1988 at Mr. Gatti's. President Annie Vahalik opened the meeting followed by the pledge to the flag led by Janell Chudej.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the previous meeting. They were approved after minor corrections. Correspondence followed.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave her report and also gave the officers their fee checks.

Co - Youth Leader Gaynell Chudej gave her report.

The members present voted to contribute $50 to the Bluebonnett Youth Ranch near Yoakum.

Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka gave his usual report. The meeting was adjourned.

Co - Youth Leader Gaynell Chudej led the members in singing Christmas songs. Santa then arrived to the delight of the kids present. He visited and handed out candy and fruit. Games were played and enjoyed. Ida Neubauer and Erwin Holy won the candy - guessing games. Door prize winners were Annie Vahalik and Gaye Galetka. Refreshments were served.

Lodge No. 15, Buckholts Dear Members: Well, the holidays are about over.

Hope all of you had a very happy Christmas. We had a very good Christmas; all of the family and friends were well and happy.

President Leslie Sakewitz opened the regular meeting by welcoming our guests, Dan Balusek , Thomas Harwell, Gene Marak, Noma Zalesky, Thelma Groppell, Nancy and Mark Michalka, Louise Stalmach and Jana and Leigh Ann Talley. We were happy to have you all and please come, again.

We were really glad to have District II Director Willie E. Kohutek and his lovely wife, Adeline, as our guests.

Willie was so kind and gave us two door prizes to give away at the party.

They were won by Leigh Ann Talley and Sidonia Svoboda. We thank you, Willie, for all the kindnesses you gave us. Adeline and Willie, you are always welcome to come visit with us.

There was no new business so we started the party. There was so much good food to eat and drink, also playing of games and we had a very enjoyable time and, if you missed it, hope that you will come next time.

The next meeting will be January 11th at 7 p.m. with the installation of new officers. Members, please try and come. Hope all of you will have a healthy and prosperous 1989.

Lodge No. 17, New Tabor Dear Members: New Tabor Lodge No. 17 held its regular monthly meeting in December with all officers present, except Vice President Sheila Hildebrand. Bud Petty was appointed to be acting vice president.

A resolution of sympathy was read for Eugene Kaltwasser. We would like to extend our syinpathy to his family and friends.

It was reported that the State Playoffs will be: March 4th Taroky March 25th -- Straight Dominoes April 8th -- "42" We did not ask for either tournament to be held at our lodge because the tournaments have outgrown our hall.

New members are Snider, Joshua, Shanna and Rebecca Campise.

Well, Christmas is over and the New Year is upon us. So what else is new? Well, our deer hunters are back in our midst and they are either bragging about the big buck that they got or the bigger one that they saw and missed.

Our lodge held its regular meeting December 20, 1988. President Dale Kessel opened the meeting at which twenty - five members were in attendance.

After the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Rueben Krieg, reports by the officers and chairpersons were made.

We close out 1988 and we wish to thank all of our friends and patrons who supported us during this year and all previous years. With your continued support, we can continue to supply good times and friendship for many years to come.

We also want to thank all of the workers who make Lodge 18 a success. It takes people (hard working people) to make things happen.

Dear Members: A REMINDER!!! The first monthly meeting of 1989 of our lodge, Lodge Karel Jonas, will be held this Sunday, January 8th. The meeting will start at 2 p.m. and will be held in the lodge hall.

Besides the regular reports, there will be several pieces of "Old Business" to be resolved.

The fraternal gathering and luncheon is still scheduled after the business meeting.

A question came up in this writer's mind, after hearing a statement about good members. This question was "What is a good member?" At this point in time, this writer will reserve his comments and questions until a later date. This is a good question with the criterion set by some really in question. Enough said.

SPJST Lodge 133 met at St. Margaret Mary Activity Center, 1314 Fair Avenue, San Antonio, Texas at 12:30 p.m. Members shared Christmas dinner. Forty - five members were present. Four guests who attended were Thelma Hrncir, District VII director and her husband, Eugene and Rudy and Marie Kutach.

The meeting began at 1:40 p.m.

President Anthony Trilicek called the meeting to order. He then led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

A moment of silence was held for deceased members. President Trilicek thanked Joe and Viola Spacek and everyone who helped prepare and serve the meal.

celebrating their wedding anniversaries included Brother Otto Hurta and his wife, 49 years; Kathy Uribe and her husband, 8 years; and Frankie Campbell and her husband, 27 years.

Brother Adolph Popp was reported on the sick list. Brother Jaroslav Kleprlik was in the Nix Hospital recovering from surgery on his hip.

Sister Thelma Hrncir thanked the members for inviting her to the Christmas dinner and meeting. She spoke briefly on refunds to the lodges on premiums and annuities and the funding of an SPJST recreational facility.

Sister Frankie Campbell, youth leader of Lodge 133, asked members to begin collecting their favorite recipes.

The youth club planned to put together a cookbook.

Sister Thelma Hrncir installed the officers for 1989. They are: President -- Anthony Trilicek Vice President and Fraternal Coordinator -- William Mares Secretary and Treasurer -- Jarolyn Popp Flag Bearer -- Joe Stryk Youth Leader -- Frankie Campbell The youth club sang several Christmas carols for the members.

Afterwards, Santa visited and presented treats for the children.

Those celebrating December birthdays were honored. They included Viola Kurtz, Emil Rohan, Grace Rohan, Mary Popp and Karen Popp. Robert Popp won "Split the Pot." Attendance prizes were given to William Pavliska, 1st; Alfred Kalmus, 2nd; Frankie Campbell, 3rd. Door prizes brought by Thelma Hrncir were given to Kathy Uribe, James Kostelnik, Joe Spacek and Mary Popp. More names were drawn and the extra Christmas packages were presented to the winners.

With no more business to discuss, Sister Viola Kurtz made a motion that the meeting be adjourned. Sister Viola Fajkus seconded the motion.

Refreshments and a games party followed.

Lodge No. 88, Houston Birthday Club December 14, 1988 the Birthday Club met in the dining room for their regular monthly meeting at 11:15 a.m.

Due to President Kathy Trefell having to leave Houston for an emergency, I was asked to conduct the meeting.

The minutes were read and approved; also, Rosalee Kostom read some correspondence.

The financial report was given by Lillie Spies.

Mary Kosut gave the card report.

Vice President Pearl Hanka, on behalf of the Birthday Club Sisters, thanked the hostesses of December for the beautiful meal they served. The hostesses were Kathy and Mike Trefell, Rita and Homer Alexander, Edna Froelich, Alice Bily, Ardith McClellan, Gladys and Dub Pulley and Martha Baxter. The officers and the Board were our guests for the turkey dinner; also many of us baked extra pastry.

My nephew, Larry Green, donated spices, potatoes and gravy mix, which we really appreciate -- thank you so much.

Our sick members are Agnes Pederson, Birdie Pech (who is slowly improving), Mary Johnson's son, Victor Janak, has arthritis so badly, Ruth Duncan (a former member of our club is in Spring Health Care Center) and also one of our dear friends, Elenora Bristik, passed away; she was never a club member but an SPJST member.

The birthday celebrities for December were Gladys Pulley, Willie Mae Ermis, Ardith McClellan and Lillian Finn.

The Kathy Trefell gift was won by Pearl Hanka; the Calcutta game was won by Willie Mae Ermis and Pearl Hanka; Ima Lero donated a beautiful pillow, but I don't remember who won it -- too many holidays.

Our cooks for January 1989 are: Helen Hegwood, Marie Pokluda, Inez Jeanes and Virginia Hale.

Mary Kosut dismissed us with a table grace.

Class At Alief

Alief Evening School, under the auspices of AISD (Alief Independent School District), is again offering a Conversational Czech course at Hastings High School. The location of this school is between Bellaire Blvd. on the south and Alief - Clodine on the north on the southwest side of the intersection of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the community of Alief.

The first lesson of this 12 - week course, designed to develop basic skill

in the Czech language wherever it is spoken, will be on January 18, 1989 and henceforth once a week on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Tuition, set by the school, will be $43 and the instructor will be John J. Karas of Houston.

A Sincere Appreciation

Henry John Langer Dear Friends: I asked my niece, Martha Durham, to come to the nursing center to help me write a letter to thank all of you who have been so kind to send cards, letters, fruit, nuts, candy, and Christmas packages to us. I have been at the nursing home since December 2, 1985, when my wife and I entered here together.

I wanted to tell you a little about my life in general. I was born in Ennis, Texas, May 2, 1900, one of eight boys and four sisters. I am the only living boy of my family and there are two sisters living -- one in Dallas and one in California. I am 88 years old and the sisters are 93 and 85. Our parents both died when I was three years old; the youngest child was seven months old at the time of our parents' deaths. The father was stabbed to death and I was told that my mother died of a broken heart. (Uncle Henry did not recall exactly who reared the whole family, but a family member thinks an orphanage took the family for a while; then an older sister raised the family.)

I worked on the farm until I was seventeen years old; then I went to work for the Southern Pacific Railroad in Ennis, January 24, 1917. I worked for the Southern Pacific for four and one - half years. Then December 22, 1921, I went to work for the T&P Railroad in Fort Worth. I retired from the T&P, after forty four years, July 1, 1965. I was an inspector/foreman, starting as a boilermaker, for the T&P. I traveled all over the railroad and inspected everything on the line -- freight depots, switch engines, etc.

I really enjoyed playing the accordian. I started playing when I was eight years old, teaching myself as I went along. I played at all kinds of places, reunions, dances, lodge functions, playing only for the

enjoyment of others. I didn't earn any money doing this. The accordian I had and loved the most came from Czechoslovakia. I ordered it from a catalog from Czechoslovakia. It is now 72 years old and my daughter, Pauline McMurray, has it in her safekeeping.

I really enjoyed working for the railroad. I started out and had to make a living somehow, so I went to work for the railroad. I made 10 cents an hour and worked 10 hours a day ($1 per day) and I was really rich. That was very good money in those days. I married Anna Hubenak on May 9, 1927. She and I had three daughters -Dorothy Mae, who died when she was three years old from scarlet fever; Betty Ann, who is now married to Dr. Bob Phillips and Pauline, who is married to Jim McMurray. I have nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren and another expected in 1989.

Mama (Anna) and I lived mostly in Fort Worth -- in Arlington Heights from 1922 to about 1963; then we farmed in Mansfield for about two years, moving to the Northside of Fort Worth until 1975, when we came to live in Weatherford, near Betty Ann's home on September 16, 1975; then to this nursing home when Mama (Anna) got sick December 2, 1985, to the present time. Mama (Anna) was born January 4, 1905 and will be 84 this coming birthday. I used to love hunting rabbits and swimming, and I would love to see some of the old friends who went hunting and swimming with me.

I was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church while living in Fort Worth, and now I am a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church here in Weatherford.

1 want to thank all of you, again, for remembering us. I still can play dominoes and "42" if you want .to come see me at Leisure Lodge Nursing Center on Santa Fe Drive in Weatherford, Texas, Room 38.

December 11th and we had lots of fun. We sang Christmas songs and then Santa Claus came and gave us Christmas packages. We all stayed and had a very good supper.

39 Youth Discuss Plans

Dear Readers, The youth of Lodge No. 39, Bryan held their monthly meeting December 11, 1988 at 2:40 p.m . We discussed our plans for the month of December. We have planned to go Christmas caroling December 20th at 6:30 p.m. in rest homes and passing our candy cane reindeer, which were made as our craft at the meeting.

Afterwards, the teenagers watched a movie at the youth leader's home.

December 4th, at 3 p.m., we participated in the Bryan - College Station Holiday Parade with our float "Frosty Sounds," which carried our District 1 King and Queen. They are Brian Faust and Trudy Krenek.

We also attended the Lodge No. 39's Christmas Party, December 3rd.

Everyone had a good time.

88 Youth Club Activities

Dear Vestnik Readers, The December 7, 1988 meeting of the Lodge 88 Youth Club, Houston was called to order at approximately 7:30 p.m. by Vice President Crystal Wallace; Darlene Migl, the president would show up a little later.

Substitute Sergeant - at - Arms Tammie Wallace led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. All remained standing following the pledge for a moment of silence for the peace and good of our members.

Then, Secretary Michelle Linney read the roll call of officers. Officers present were President Darlene Migl, Vice President Crystal Wallace, Secretary Michelle Linney and Treasurer Marlene Migl. Sergeant - at Arms Kevin Faske and Reporter Paul Groendes were absent. Also, committee chairmen who were absent were Paul Pflughaupt (Membership Committee) and Wesley Faske (Refreshments Committee). Those present were Tammie Wallace (Fund Raising Committee), Clint Vick (Get Well Committee), Cindy Groendes (Scrapbook Committee) and Brian Havemann (Social Committee).

The secretary then read the register.

There was a very good attendance of both youth and adults. It was very nice to have the parents come and help; they are very essential to our youth club, especially with the "San Antonio Express Trip."

Secretary Michelle Linney read the minutes of our last meeting held November 2, 1988. There were no corrections or additions and the minutes stood approved as read.

There was no correspondence.

Treasurer Marlene Migl read her report. She reported to the youth of Lodge No. 88, that the District V Fund - Raiser on November 19, which was a garage sale, brought in over $500 to the "San Antonio Express Trip" funds. She thanked all these who helped before that Saturday and on the day of our Saturday's sales.

There was one visitor who belongs to the youth club of Lodge No. 142 also in Houston; she is 13 years old.

There were no new members.

Next, the officers gave their reports.

Vice President Crystal Wallace told all about the Christmas program on December 12th at 7 p.m. She reminded all the actors and actresses who planned on making the program such a success to show up Friday, December 9th for one final dress rehearsal.

There were no committee reports for the month of December.

Under unfinished business, the club discussed the Christmas Party and/or caroling at a nursing home. It was decided that the plans for a party be taken in with the lodge Christmas program Monday night. The youth club would have their party following the distribution of presents from Santa Claus.

Under new business, it was discussed that all would decorate the tree Sunday following the lodge's annual meeting, also during the meeting we would bag the fruit and candy, that would be given out Monday night and distributed to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home by the Choral Club.

Next, DYC Marie Stayton gave her report. At the top of her list of discussion as it has been for months, was the "San Antonio Express Trip."

She told the club that we would be applying to stay at an Air Force Base in San Antonio; breakfast there is 75 cents, lunch is $1.50 and dinner is $1.50. It is our wish that we will go on the trip June 16 - 18, 1989. She reminded youth members and parents, that anyone who plans to go must attend their youth club meetings and work at various fund - raisers including the kitchen sales on Thursday nights. Also, if any parent plans to drive, they should let either Marie Stayton, Nancy Steubing, Barbara Linney, or Lou Groendes know. To stay at the base will also cost $3 per person. So, if we do get accepted to stay that weekend, then we will be about set; so far, there is about $1,000 in the funds for our trip. There are plans for another garage sale in the spring of 1989, and everyone is asked to bring cans and newspapers to give to A.J. Stayton. Finally, everyone will need their own spending money on the "San Antonio Express Trip."

Mrs. Stayton also told the LITs of our club that LIT Retreat would be June 9 through 11, the weekend right before the weekend we hope to be in San Antonio. Also, camp will be from July 29 through August 1 at Val Verde.

This year District V plans to camp with the youth of District VII. All of us are very happy about this, because there will be many new friends to be made from District VII. Our YAD for District V will be at

Lodge No. 88 on July 23, 1989. Mrs. Stayton announced this year's T - Shirt Contest to everyone, and Youth Leader Barbara Linney passed out entry forms to all desiring to have their design on the 1989 Camp T - Shirt. She reminded the 1988 winner, Darlene Migl, that she was exempted from this year's contest. Also, the entries are due in by January 6, 1989. Finally, Mrs. Stayton ended her report by announcing the Christmas Ornament Contest winners who won first place in their category and will have their ornament on the tree in Temple, namely: Darlene Migl -- 15 - 17 Cindy Groendes -- 13 - 14 Amanda Havemann -- 10 - 12 Nicholas Havemann -- 6 - 9 Next, our Youth Leader Barbara Linney gave her report. She asked that all the parents try and come to the annual meeting, so, they can get involved with the lodge and know what is going on. She told about this year's special category that is a quilt block.

Also, there is supposed to be a contest where the youth club with the most new members throughout the year will get a prize. She told all that they could bring a present for a girl if they were a girl, and a boy should bring one for a boy to be exchanged at the Christmas program. Also, you may bring gifts for other friends.

The last item of business was by DYC Marie Stayton who wanted to tell all, that she received correspondence from the youth leader of Lodge No. 39, Bryan who read the letters youth members are writing about the "San Antonio Express Trip." Mrs. Stayton said that she was real excited to read about it, and she wanted an idea for a trip in her own club.

Next, the club sang "Happy Birthday" to all December birthday celebrants. Those birthday people were Angela Gloria who will be 9 on December 10th, Julio Gloria who will be 12 on December 29th, Cara Salazar who will be 12 on December 20th, Kristy Sokol who will be 11 on December 15th and Crystal Wallace who will be 17 on December 17th.

Last, we recited the Youth Club Motto and sang the "Fraternity Song." Everyone was wished a "Merry Christmas" and the meeting was adjourned at about 9 p.m.

Our next meeting will be January 4, 1989 at 7:30 p.m.

39 Youth Club News

Dear Members, The youth of Lodge No. 39, Bryan held their monthly meeting at 2:40 p.m. December 11th we made candy cane reindeer for our craft. We will pass these out at rest homes, which we will be caroling December 20th.

The mother lodge hosted a Christmas Party December 3rd which went well.

On December 4th, at the Bryan College Station Holiday Parade, we had entered our float "Frosty Sounds," which carried the District I King and Queen. It also went well.

Memoriam

JEROME J. VASEK of Shiner died at 8:08 p.m., Monday, December 12, 1988, in the Trinity Lutheran Home in Shiner, following a long illness. He reached the age of 80 years, 4 months and 8 days. He had been a resident at the nursing home since April 28, 1988.

Mr. Vasek was born August 3, 1908, near La Grange, Fayette County, Texas, son of Frank and Antonia (Stang) Vasek. At a young age, the family moved to Komensky, east of Moulton, where he attended school.

He was a retired farmer and rancher, and a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Moulton.

On October 24, 1939, he was married to Helen Zidek in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Moulton. The Rev. Joseph Kopp performed the ceremony during the nuptial Mass.

The couple made their home with his wife's parents on the farm, three miles west of Moulton on FM 532, his wife's birthplace. They farmed and raised cattle. Two children blessed this marriage union. They moved to Shiner in September 1985.

Mr. Vasek was a member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight for two years. He was also an active member of the KJT Society. He held the office of secretary of the organization for 34 years. As a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 184, Moulton, he was on the By - Laws Committee of the Supreme Lodge in Temple for 12 years and was a delegate to several SPJST Conventions.

He was a director of the Farmers Co - op in Moulton for many years, a sales representative for the Hochheim Prairie Insurance Group, and a Justice of the Peace eight years for Precinct 2, Lavaca County.

The parish, KC and KJT rosary was recited jointly at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 13 at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Moulton, led by the

Rev. Msgr. Robert Schmidt.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Wednesday, December 14 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Moulton with Holy Mass celebrated by the Rev. Msgr. Schmidt.

Altar server was a grandson Jeffrey Vasek of Navasota, with Mrs. Paul Panus of Shiner as the lector. The offertory gifts were presented at the altar by a granddaughter, Virginia Vasek of Navasota and Mrs. Paul Panus of Shiner.

The church choir sang several hymns during the Mass, accompanied by the organist, Mrs. Frankie Darilek.

Burial followed in the Moulton Catholic Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were a son, Leon Vasek of Navasota; son - in - law, Joe Panus of Shiner; grandsons, Mark, Paul and Michael Panus, all of Shiner, and his only brother, Darwin Vasek of Moulton.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Mrs. Helen Vasek of Shiner; daughter and son - in - law, Leonita and Joe Panus of Shiner; son and daughter - in - law, Leon and Sheryl Vasek of Navasota; three sisters, Mrs. Tony (Antonia) Gassmann of Columbus, Mrs. Viola Janek of Arkadelphia, Arkansas and Mrs. George (Irene) Drozd of Yoakum; one brother, Darwin Vasek of Moulton; and five grandchildren, Mark, Paul, Michael Panus, all of Shiner; Virginia ,Kay `Ginger' Vasek and Jeffrey Vasek, both of Navasota; also nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 15, Buckholts on behalf of our entire membership, express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother LOUIS W. ZAZICEK, who passed away in a Cameron hospital on Wednesday, November 23, 1988 following an extended illness at the age of 87.

Services were held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, November 26 at the Marek - Burns - Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron, with the Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Burial was in the Corinth Cemetery near Buckholts.

He was born September 23, 1901 to the late Thomas and Veronica (Chudej) Zajicek of Buckholts, Texas.

He was the youngest of 10 children; 5 sisters and 4 brothers preceded him in death.

Brother Zajicek was a farmer and later moved to Houston where he was a painter for many years.

He was a longtime member of the Buckholts Brethren Church, the SPJST Lodge No. 15 and the Sokol where he enjoyed working with people. He also enjoyed all kinds of sports, fishing and gardening.

After his health began to fail, he moved back to Buckholts and spent the last few months of his life in a nursing home in Cameron.

Survivors are nieces and nephews and a sister -in - law, Lydia Zajicek of Buckholt s .

Pallbearers were nephews, Joe Zajicek, Vince Zajicek, Albert Zajicek, A.W. Zajicek, Jr., Jack Ruzicka and Elmer Busch.

Memoriam

CHARLES J. KALINA, age 90, died Monday, October 24, 1988 at Tower Nursing Home in Smithville, Texas after a lengthy illness. Born in Kovar community, Bastrop County on July 17, 1898, he was the son of John and Rosie Palla Kalina. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha V. Kalina on July 5, 1975.

Mr. Kalina was a longtime member of SPJST Lodge No. 38, Kovar, Texas.

Rosary was recited at Marrs - Jones Funeral Home on Wednesday,

October 26, at 7:30 p.m. Mass was offered at St. Paul's Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Thursday with Msgr. John Frizelle officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Smithville, Texas.

He is survived by two sons, Raymond J. Kalina of Smithville and Charles H. Kalina of Missouri City; four daughters, Margaret Stryk, Elaine Olsovsky, Della Thompson and LaNell Coppock, all of Austin; brother, Leon Kalina; sister, Elsie Sodek of Smithville; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Presentation Of The Olympic Cup (Trophy) To The Czech Sokol Organization (While visiting the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, Sisters Annette Schabowski, Henrietta Milan and Brother Jerry Milan discovered the Olympic Cup. The display mentions that it was presented to the Czech Sokol Organization in 1910.

by Sister Vera Roknie of Sokol Tabor -- Sokol 1910, 700.34.4 ASO Library) (Translated from Czech by Vera Rocknie) A week ago, a large part of Bohemia from the Bavarian border all the way to Praha, did welcome the winners from London. Praha welcomed them with such an ovation that is seldom witnessed and only when sparked by a patriotic flame which --- so far --- has been the greatest in the existence of nations. After a triumphant trip through Bohemia, through a myriad of people that lined the streets of Praha, after a formal greeting at the City Hall, there took place an honorary reception for. the Czech Sokol District.

Honors were given in the young, simple yet confident spirit which made Sokol great. In the grand hall of Zofin which was filled with row upon row of spectators basking in the light of sparkling chandeliers, underneath the balconies which adorned the hall like hanging garlands, the Sokols showed a kaleidoscope of color and movement which won them honors in London and which they will perform during the Slet in Sofia, Bulgaria and Krakow, Poland. Each number performed culminated in a new wave of excitement. At the sound of the last note --- when the magical vision of the "London Calisthenics" faded away, the hall exploded in tremendous applause which echoed the undescribable thunder which the Sokols received after their calisthenics at the Slet. When we witnessed this fascinating gymnastic symphony three weeks earlier at Praha Sokol, we were filled with hopes that the success in London will belong to us. Yesterday, we understood the joyous amazement of the English public on the noble expression of strength and dexterity which is both beautiful and aesthetic.

For the English audience it must have seemed out of this world --- this truly Slavic expression of gymnastics which shows strength,lightness of movement, deftness and precision.

The Czech Sokol organization honored the composers of the calisthenics, brothers Vaclav Vorel and Karel Mrazek, instructors of Sokol Praha, by presenting them with diplomas.

During the evening festivities, Dr. Jill Guth, president of the Czech Executive Board of the Olympic Games, presented to the Czech Sokol Organization the Olympic trophy for 1910 as a token of their affection for the Czech nation as well as in appreciation of their work in the field of physical education.

The gymnasts from London (J. Czada, Sv. Svoboda, F. Vacha, V. Kukec, K. StarV, J. Machovs14, F. Svoboda and S. Peca) under the leadership of Dr. Jindra Vanieek opened the evening program with a performance on parallel bars. Each performer received well - deserved applause.

Afterwards the Sokols from Praha District performed calisthenics which were written for the Slet in Sofia, Bulgaria where these will be performed by 26 district teams, or about 150 gymnasts.

The president of the Czech Olympic Board, Dr. Jiff Guth, handed over to the Czech Sokol Organization the Olympic cup, reflecting on the festive welcome of the gymnasts after their return from London and he highlighted the honors bestowed on the Czech Sokols. He expressed pride and joy on being able --- as member on the international board and as director of the Czech Olympic Board --- to hand this cup to the Czech Sokol Organization for their merit in physical education. In a short speech he described the beginning, goal and work of the international Olympic Board who organized the Olympic Games in Athens, Paris, St. Louis, London and the next ones (in 1912) in Stockholm. He explained the meaning of the Olympic cup which was founded in 1906 by Baron P. Coubertin. This cup represents the highest honor given to organizations promoting physical education. In 1906 it was awarded to Touring C. de France, in 1907 Henley regata, in 1908 Svensk Centralfor, for Idrottens Tremjande, and in 1909 German touring group. By awarding this trophy the Olympic Board testifies to the high esteem of the Sokol gymnastics. Dr. Guth expressed his wish that all our sportsmen would take as their example the high standards of the Sokols as well as their patriotic

The Cyniple Cup sentiments. He asked the Czech Sokol Organization to accept the cup for the year 1910 --- a year which will be forever remembered in Sokol history as testimony of the affection of the international Olympic Board. He concluded his speech with a Sokol "Nazdar."

President of the Czech Sokol Organization, Dr. J. Scheiner, replied: "Dear brother and friend! On behalf of the Czech Sokol Organization I accept, with sincere thanks, this proof of recognition of our work by the international Olympic board and ask that you deliver our thanks to your committee which so generously bestowed this honor on us and our entire nation. Our reward is in the knowledge that we have done our work conscientiously and the fact that the world is honoring our small nation today gives us great satisfaction."

"The realization that this honor was bestowed upon us by the Olympic Committee reminds us of the beautiful celebrations that took place at one time in Greece. We think back to the times when the Olympic Games represented national strength and greatness. However, greed and hunger for individual glory overturned the entire institution into destitution and degradation."

"And thus by accepting these honors we are passing them on the altar of our nation. Among us, there are no winners or conceited individuals but we remain as brothers equal in their striving to excel in honest work for the country of competitors. It is the noble Sokol idea that deserves the laurels of glory. Nazdar!"

After the speech, Dr. Scheiner handed to brother V. Vorel and Karel Mrazek an award for their excellence and success of the London tour.

Next on the program was the singing group of Sokol Praha with their rendition of Vendler's "BO jsme a budem" and following groups marched up on the stage: Jungman strict, Sokol Praha (horse), District Central Bohemia (parallel bars), District arak and pobelohorska (horse). It presented a pleasant picture of physical variety when the eyes wandered from one group to another, searching for the best from the best. In the center of the gym hall a group of gymnasts under the leadership of brother Kavalir performed a routine on parallel bars which will be repeated at the Sokol Slet in Krakow, Poland.

And as the grand finale, there followed the London calisthenics

which performance was rewarded by endless applause. The Sokols, led by brother Dr. J. Vanleek, marched off but the audience didn't want to leave the stadium, hoping that the gymnasts would return for additional performance.

In the meantime, down on the field, the second part of the program took place. While a light rain shower came down, it didn't stop the spectators from watching the performance of Junior teams from 2i2kov, Vinohrady, women's group from Vy gehrad and 2i2kov.

The highlight of this evening were the human pyramids carrying lighted lamps. Beautifully bodied gymnasts from 211kov, dressed in white uniforms, performed symbolic tableaus of fairytale beauty framed by the green circle of lovely chestnut trees illuminated by specks of light.

Spectators --- admiring the beauty and skill of their brothers --- with the music playing the rustle of trees, and distant murmur of rushing water and the quieting noise of the city --- fringed by the dark surface of the Vltava River --- all that added to an unforgettable evening.

Men Of America The Board of Advisors for the Outstanding Young Men of America awards program announced today that the men named on the list have been selected for inclusion in the 1988 edition.

Now in its 26th year, the OYMA program is designed to honor and encourage exceptional young men between the ages of 21 and 36 who have distinguished themselves in many fields of endeavor, such as service to community, professional leadership, academic achievement, business advancement, cultural accomplishments, and civic and political participation. Wednesday, January 4, 1989—VESTNiK/9 How do you tell a young child that she will never see her mom, dad and brother again -- that they are dead?

The question doubtless occurred to millions of people after the recent airline crash that left a 4 - year - old girl the sole survivor. The scope of her loss was unusually tragic. But every day more than approximately 5,000 families have to deal with youngsters who lose a close relative.

When there is a death in a child's family, do not sugarcoat the painful truth. "Terms like 'passed on' or 'long, long sleep' are confusing to children and can be destructive. A child told that Mother or Father "went for a long trip" may forever associate travel with death. Children can be told that someone has died and that they are not coming back. Very young children, of course, generally will have no idea what you mean and will have to hear the message again and again.

With children age 4 or under, you may have to tell them for weeks that Daddy isn't coming home tomorrow before they grasp it. Try to explain patiently each time the child asks. Children about 8 or 9, can understand that death is permanent. But they still may need to be reassured, as do younger ones, that they did not cause the death by being disobedient or doing something wrong.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Bordelon, Jr. of Plano.

The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George J. Reznik of Dallas.

Matron of Honor was Vicki Knipp of Plano. Best man was Mitchell Pannek of Dallas. Bridesmaids were Beth Turner of Plano and Pam Garber of Princeton. Groomsmen were Frank Turner of Plano and Roger Enlow of Dallas. Flower girls were Krista Garber, niece of the bride, and Natasha Tye, niece of the bridegroom.

Ring bearer was Brian Johnson, nephew of the bridegroom.

The bride wore a formal length ivory satin gown featuring an open scalloped neckline and a fitted satin bodice with Alencon lace, seed pearls and sequins. The Elizabethan sleeves had satin bows and matching lace appliques. The back of the dress had satin - covered buttons, a bustle below the waistline and a satin bow. The V waist swept to a full skirt and cathedral - length train edged with scalloped lace. A fingertip - length veil had sprays of tiny pearls and silk embroidered flowers cascading to one side.

The bride carried a crescent bouquet of white phaleanopsis orchids, stephanotis, white roses and calla lilies.

The bridesmaids wore emerald green v., taffeta waltz - length gowns with bateau necklines, V - backs and bows at the bottom of the yoke waistlines.

A reception was held at the Mitchell House in Plano.

The four - tiered wedding cake was scented with chambord raspberry

records' clerk for the City of Plano.

The bridegroom is a graduate of Lake Highlands High School and Texas Tech University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Landscape Architecture. He is a real property specialist for the City of Plano.

The couple honeymooned in New Mexico. They will reside in Plano.

Children should be allowed to grieve. How they do it depends on age and is bound to be different from adult behavior. Children age 3 to 6 cannot articulate their feelings, and it's not uncommon for them to be angry, either at the dead relative -- Why did Mommy leave me? -- or at surviving family or friends. Children also may suck their thumbs or regress in some other way. Youngsters often need to be encouraged to express their emotions so that they do not get all bottled up inside, on the other hand, children are more aware of their feelings but are often self - conscious about expressing them. They may, in fact, be imbarrassed by the death, which makes them feel different. Teenagers often need more emotional support than younger children. Try to assure such youngsters that their situation isn't unique, that deaths within families happen to everyone.

As with adults, children adjust to death in phases. Effects can linger for years. But after the initial period of mourning, children should be encouraged to move on and enjoy life, even while grieving. The more that daily routines and familiar environments are preserved, the better.

A small percentage of children have lasting emotional problems. Some telltale signs: Little or no outward emotional reaction to the death, poor school performance, sleeplessness, illness, depression or change in eating habits. If symptoms persist, counseling may be needed. The most important factor in a child's readjustment is the care giver. If a woman loses her husband and she has a rough time of it, her children may be essentially motherless for a while. There are several interesting books to read such as, "They Need to Know: How to Teach Children About Death," "Explaining Death to Children," "Caring About Kids: Talking to Children About Death."

Chairman Donnie Victorick reconvened the Convention at 1:00 p.m. and relinquished the Chair to Vice Chairman Larry Pflughaupt who made the following introductions: Emil Brozek, First Vice President, Farmers Mutual Protective Association (RVOS) Raymond David, First Vice President, Czech Catholic Union of Texas (KJT) Julius Hlavinka and Johnnie Gaidusek, Directors, (RVOS) Stan Patak, Area Supervisor, Western Fraternal Life Association Minutes for Tuesday morning, session 8:05-10:00 a.m. were reviewed. Maxine Sefcik (54) asked if any action would be taken on her request to view the expenses of the Directors for the past four years. Finance Committee Chairman Arnold Vrla (130) announced information would be forthcoming. Donnie Victorick (9) suggested that on page 3, first paragraph, the sentence should now read "Maxine Sefcik (54) asked if it would be in order for the Finance Committee to give an expense report for each Director for the last four years."

By-Laws Committee Chairman Donnie Victorick said the ByLaws Committee intended only the question and vote to be published. Cyrill Pokladnik (84) reiterated that all members were invited and welcome to attend the meetings. Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska agreed that it was important for all members to keep informed and wanted to know if it would be unfair to give the vote without giving reasons why. Editor Sefcik (54) responded that Supreme Lodge members should not mind the recording of their votes. District Director Thelma Hmcir (79) would like the membership to know why votes were cast. Emil Petr (84) stated members who were interested could ask for details in writing. Johnnie Krizan (6) stated that the issue was one of accountability and that if an individualized vote of all Officers and Directors was taken and recorded in the Supreme Lodge minutes for all members to inspect then the need to print each vote in the Vestnik would be unnecessary. Therefore, to avoid the cumbersome problem of printing lengthy minutes in the Vestnik, we should omit the final sentence of the proposed Article 32 (b)". Lonnie Lostak (139) suggested copies be mailed to each local lodge instead of being published in the Vestnik.

Helen Oates (130) stated that we have the right to know how our Director voted.

Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska said the official minutes of the Supreme Lodge meeings were available at the Home Office. A.J. Kelner (28) made the motion that the last sentence of the recommended Bylaw change be deleted, seconded by Johnnie Krizan (6). Leona Macha (40) asked Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska if a copy of the Supreme Lodge meeting minutes would be available if requested. SecretaryTreasurer Leonard Mikeska said no minutes had ever been mailed but they were available for viewing and copies could be made. Norma Cavanaugh (20) requested a clarification of the vote and said she agreed with Helen Oates (130).

By-Laws Committee Chairman Donnie Victorick said the By-Laws Committee felt this was a procedural issue and should not be included in the By-Laws. Darlene Engelke (66) thought this would be an incentive to get the Convention to different cities.

ARTICLE 4-a-2- the By-Laws Committee recommended to update the NOTE to read "A lodge meets its insurance goal when it achieves a 15% increase of net premium income (excluding annuity premiums) on base year 1987 for the year of the Convention and the two years following the Convention". Joe Nezval (28) asked if this could be worded so it would not have to be updated at each Convention. Chairman Donnie Victorick and Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas responded no. ARTICLE 4-e-7- as recommended by the By-Laws Committee failed. Former Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris said this had been brought up in the 1976 Convention, and he did not see why a Supreme Lodge member could not be a delegate. Cyrill Pokladnik (84) also spoke against the recommendation.

Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir indicated that Robert's Rules of Order states that you cannot deny anyone from being a delegate because they are an officer.

Another thought on this is that there is a conflict of interest if a delegate is also an officer. The decision should be left to the membership. Darlene Engelke (66) said there were only 12 members of the Supreme Lodge and they should be eligible to be delegates. A.J. Kelner (28) called for the vote. Leonard Jansa (160) and Harley Cox (88) also felt members of the Supreme Lodge could be delegates.

Johnnie Krizan (6) questioned if this would not cause a conflict between the President and the Chairman of the Board.

By-Laws Committee Chairman Donnie Victorick stated that the President was a full-time employee while the Chairman of the Board was only in attendance parttime and therefore not available for all necessary decisions. He also added that the President can prepare the agenda, and the Chairman of the Board can preside at the Supreme Lodge meetings. Chairman Donnie Victorick stated that Cyrill Pokladnik (84) wanted to make a statement. Cyrill Pokladnik (84) stated that a rumor was started at the banquet that he would be a candidate for President of SPJST. He wanted to make a correction that he would not put his name in the pot, but that he would like to keep his job as Director from District III and would appreciate his district's support.

The Chair announced that the pink reimbursement sheets should be completed by 10:00 a.m. break, but he stated that we would take time out right now to complete the reimbursement forms.

Some of the delegates left their forms in their hotel and Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska said he could take care of that right now and would make photocopies of the forms. He also said that some of them would be putting three days on the form and they knew what their per diem should be. Others who met Sunday would be paid on the old rate and beginning on Monday morning, new rates became effective.

Dorothy Pflughaupt (88) asked about the mileage when a husband and wife rode together would they be entitled to mileage for two or one. It was explained

Homer Alexander (88) holds this position at Lodge 88 and felt it should not be an officer because it took him 25 to 40 hours a week and it would be too much work put on a First Vice President or any officer.

President Howard Leshikar stated that in many lodges there is not a person available to be a liaison between the Supreme Lodge and the local lodge regarding fraternal activities. He asked if the By-Laws Committee would accept the following addition "unless the lodge elects a Fraternal Activities Coordinator as a separate position".

He could not spell out guidelines and duties specifically at this time but fraternal activities would be increasing and the purpose of this was to promote more fraternal activities within the lodges. Jerry Milan (154) stated that they would try to generalize and list some of the duties of the Fraternal Activities Coordinator in their committee. By-Laws Committee Chairman Donnie Victorick (9) explained that it was difficult to set down rigid guidelines because of the difference in sizes and interests among local lodges.

Cyrill Pokladnik (84) stated that the Supreme Lodge requested the President to supply some guidelines and regulations. District VII Director Thelma Hrncir (79) explained why they needed someone to be a contact person so that the Supreme Lodge could also know what the local lodges were doing. She said there were a lot of great things happening on the local lodge level but the Supreme Lodge could not be made aware of it unless there was a contact between the local lodges and the Supreme Lodge.

As the program progresses we can track and evaluate the Fraternal Activities Program. She stated this position would be very important to your local lodge and to our operation as a tax exempt oganization.

George Pauling (66) stated that the Fraternal Activities Coordinator could be responsible for the domino, "42", and taroky tournaments. There is a floating trophy which goes from lodge to lodge.

Donnie Victorick, By-Laws Committee Chairman (9), then stated that the Directors themselves had submitted this By-Law change and the outside auditing firm had also suggested that we employ certified appraisers. A question was propounded as to whether we would have an outside appraiser or a local broker; also, if this would not prolong the appraiSal and the loan processing. District II Director Willie E. Kohutek (47) said that so far the Directors have a good record regarding appraisals. Susan Skrabanek (17) asked who would be paying for the independent appraisers.

Norma Cavanaugh (20) asked what the outside auditors recommended. Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas stated that if an independent appraiser were used, the application fees would increase.

Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska stated that the auditors were not comfortable with the directors' appraisals since they were not considered certified appraisers, but he personally had mixed emotions about their suggestion because of the minimal loss and lack of troubled loans even in the now depressed market.

Emil Matula (133) stated his experience with certified appraisers and spoke against using independent certified appraisers. President Howard Leshikar read the report of the auditor concerning the suggestion on using outside appraisers.

Cyrill Pokladnik (84) said he just spent $500.00 on an appraisal but judging from his period of 24 years as a Director he did not believe he had over five problems and most of them had been resolved. He stated that the Directors' track record was good, they cannot appraise loans for anyone related to them, and that they were trying to keep the cost down for the members. The CPAs do not quite understand fraternal operations. Just last week in Dallas, one of the banks put 750 houses up for sale. A.J. Kelner (28) stated that if you read the Vestnik you would see that the Directors were doing a good job and therefore, he called for the question. Bill Hutka (177) asked if the District Directors' appraisals would stand up in court. Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir stated that this was an in-house appraisal but the U.S. Courts would not ac-

cept these appraisals. Bill Hutka (177) also asked if there was a $100.00 charge for each appraisal by each Director if three Directors were used. The answer was yes. Helen Oates (130) concurred with Cyrill Pokladnik (84). Dan Balusek (47) asked what percent default of loans were made each year by the Directors.

The Convention reconvened at 10:30 a.m. with Chairman Donnie Victorick presiding.

It was announced that Czech Chair donations would be accepted today and receipts mailed at a later date. Stan Patak (84) donated $100 in memory of his wife, Mildred. Bessie and Emil Petr (84) donated $100.

The representatives from the three cities competing for the 1992 Convention gave their presentations. Inez Greenlees, President of Lodge 183, invited everyone to Arlington and introduced the representative from the Arlington Convention and Visitors' Bureau who made a video presentation. The Arlington Bureau provided refreshments for the morning break. Bob Janca from the Victoria Chamber of Commerce gave some information on Victoria. Wendell Williams, president of the Temple Chamber of Commerce, extended an official invitation to the delegates to hold their Convention in Temple in 1992. Bob Kaspar, of the Temple Convention Center, also extended an invitation for the 1992 Convention. Chairman Donnie Victorick relinquished the Chair to Vice Chairman Larry Pflughaupt. By-Laws Committee Chairman Donnie Victorick explained to the delegates that they would be deliberating recommendations by the By-Laws Committee which were not actually By-Laws. The reason for these recommendations was because the Committee had received many proposals on these matters. Parliamentarian Sidney Kacir explained that these recommendations would automatically be in the form

of a motion and second and vote would be by majority rule. These recommendations appear in the Appendix.

Recommendation #1- (Editor office space) Approved Emil Matula (133) said that this would not be a permanent office but an office to be used when the Editor was in the Temple area. By-Laws Committee Chairman Donnie Victorick clarified this. Emil Petr (84) questioned the proposal made to the By-Laws Committee by Lodge 84 pertaining to office space for the Legal Advisor. Chairman Donnie Victorick said he already had the space. Cyrill Pokladnik (84) asked for clarification of these By-Laws Committee recommendations and were they binding on the Supreme Lodge. Chairman Donnie Victorick said these recommendations would be sent to the Supreme Lodge and they would have to respond to them either at the next Convention or in the Vestnik. Editor Rudy Sefcik (54) said President Howard Leshikar advised him that space was available to him at the present time.

Recommendation #2- (Notify Editor of noteworthy items) Approved By-Laws Committee Chairman Donnie Victorick (9) felt that this was already being done but some of the members felt that this was not being done to the fullest extent. Editor Rudy Sefcik (54) requested that all noteworthy items be sent to him for publication. Vice President Bernard Gebala asked for further clarification of these recommendations as to whether we are reviewing them or whether they are binding. By-Laws Committee Chairman Donnie Victorick (9) said these were just guidelines for the Supreme Lodge to follow.

Recommendation #3- (Finance Committee's bi-annual meeting) Withdrawn by the By-Laws Committee.

Recommendation #4- (National Anthem) Approved Dominic Netek (133) said this recommendation was submitted

by Lodge 133 because, at the last three Conventions, the National Anthem was not sung. The lodge felt the National Anthem should be part of the agenda of the Convention because we sing a foreign national anthem and God Bless America, which is not the National Anthem. Joe Nezval (28) spoke in support of this recommendation. Darlene Engelke (66) also felt we should sing the National Anthem and give the Pledge of Allegiance at each session opening. By-Laws Committee Chairman Donnie Victorick (9) said that this was usually done but that due to his oversight it was omitted yesterday. Maxine Sefcik (54) asked what happened to the SPJST Fraternal Song which Professor John Pech had written and since copyrighted. She felt this should also be included in the Convention agenda since it had not been done since 1980.

Emil Matula (133) concurred. Bessie Petr (84) informed the Convention that the State Youth Director will be encouraging the young people to learn this song at camp.

Recommendation #5- (Retirement age) Failed Melvin Steger (29) asked if this would be mandatory retirement age. ByLaws Committee Chairman Donnie Victorick (9) said this should be considered and not be mandatory. Lonnie Lostak (139) cited an instance in his local lodge and felt this should be considered at the Supreme Lodge level. A.J. Kelner (28) said this was already being covered on page 42 of the By-Laws, and if Officers were capable, they should continue to hold office no matter what age. Cheryl Petr (84) asked who would decide this age. By-Laws Committee Chairman Donnie Victorick (9) responded that the members of the Supreme Lodge would make this decision. Marie Stayton (88) asked if there was not a federal law covering a mandatory retirement age.

Legal Advisor Kacir responded that no action could be taken at least until the next Convention where it could be put in the By-Laws if the delegates voted it in and it complied with the law. Marie Stayton (88) felt if the Officers were capable and qualified, she saw no sense in implementing this. Joe Nezval (28) said if we set a retirement age for the Supreme Lodge, we would be obligated to set a retirement age for the delegates.

Recommendation #6- (Recreational facility) No decision in this session.

Susan Skrabanek (17) made a motion as follows: "A committee should consist of the Supreme Lodge along with at least one member from the Youth Department,

one who is familiar with the needs of this type of facility, (possibly the DYC). This committee would be responsible for the purchase of land for the recreation facility.

This committee should have the authority (within limits) to purchase the land and begin construction - not e just make a study due to price changes in 4 years.

A similar committee was set up at the 1980 Convention but somehow was forgotten by the 1984 Convention. If a committee is given the responsibility of securing the property and beginning construction, this could possibly lead to the Society having a facility completed or partially completed by 1992.

This would be a great asset to our Society and an excellent sales pitch for our sales representatives. I move that this recommendation be considered with my amendments."

Marie Stayton (88) seconded the motion. Joe Nezval (28) said at the present time our youth go to camp for four days, but if we had our own facility, they could go to camp for longer periods of time.

Marie Stayton (88), speaking as a District Youth Counselor, thanked Joe Nezval (28) for his support and stated that it would be an asset to have our own camp.

Monta Foster (79) asked Vice President Bernard Gebala and Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska for financial information. Dorothy Pflughaupt (88), speaking as a former District Youth Counselor, said it was a real challenge to find a place and date to attend camp at the present time. President Howard Leshikar said the Home Office had already obtained some information on a family recreation area, not a youth camp, but many things would have to be ironed out, such as legal aspects. Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir was called on to explain these legal aspects.

President Howard Leshikar felt that the Supreme Lodge Officers should be on this committee, but others could be added. Darlene Engelke (66) felt we could lease sites in each district instead of purchasing one place that may be impossible to attend. She said we should not jump into this matter without thorough research. Helen Oates (130) said a study had already been made on a recreational area including a youth camp at a recent Convention but found it not feasible. Bessie Petr (84) said she had been attending camp as a DYC and cited that the cost of camping had risen from $37 per camper to $52.22 per camper in the last five years. She said it was hard to select a

camp site and date because of use by other organizations. Vice Chairman Larry Pflughaupt relinquished the Chair to speak to the issue. He said Richard Wahlberg (88), in 1980, had brought the Convention's attention to finding a "packaged" camp, but none was suitable.

Vice Chairman Larry Pflughaupt said a recreational area would be an asset, and we should consider it a family area and basically an investment. Vice Chairman Larry Pflughaupt resumed the Chair.

Vice President Bernard Gebala said no one would be against a recreational area, but we must consider dollars and cents.

Vice Chairman Larry Pflughaupt asked how insurance sales affect our finances.

Vice President Bernard Gebala said we are responsibile for maintaining surplus to cover our expenses. He said our basic question should be can we afford it and maintain it. By-Laws Committee Chairman Donnie Victorick (9) asked to hear from the actuary. Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska said the idea was appealing but we are talking from $100,000 to $2,000,000, and we should decide where we want to set our priorities. Our surplus is built on insurance premiums which are affected by expenses, mortality, and earnings on investments. So far, our estimates are better than anticipated but we need a large surplus for unforeseen contingencies. We may be able to afford a recreational area, but it may reduce yields. Some sacrifices may have to be made. When asked by Vice Chairman Larry Pflughaupt what were our reserves, Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska responded approximately $13,000,000. Meeting tomorrow with assurance -- Americans take money matters to heart. Every adult knows the difficulties of meeting today's financial demands and putting enough aside for tomorrow's: buying a home and protecting it, educating the children, and preparing for sickness and retirement.

Imagine making the dollars work out for very large groups of people --all with similar needs and desires but of different ages, incomes and levels of health --- for the next twenty, thirty, even forty years. That is what actuaries do.

Sometimes called "social mathematicians," actuaries predict the future financial effects that such events as birth, death, illness, retirement, fire and accidents have on your insurance and employee benefit plans. No small task considering the unknowns.

The actuarial profession continually strengthens its code of practice to ensure that actuaries meet the highest levels of competency possible.

Professional practice guidelines for actuaries have existed for years, according to the American Academy of Actuaries, but the standards currently being proposed broaden their scope, strengthen the discipline process should an actuary produce sub standard work, and help define the future parameters of the profession.

Actuaries' projections affect all our lives. It's good that the profession is strengthening its standards of practice to ensure that these important estimates are being made only by those people truly qualified to make such calculations, using accepted techniques.
