When these lines are read, the shortest day of the year, December 22, 1987 will be past history and our Planet Earth will be tilting the North Pole and Northern Hemisphere (which the United States is a part of) toward the sun more and more until June and the longest day of 1988. Such it has been for millions of years and repeats every 365 - 366 days. Of course, south of the equator, summer is now beginning -- surely no snowy Christmas season there! The Christmas tree still is what it has been for centuries -- an evergreen sign of warmer seasons returning.

May this Christmas Holiday Season find all, who read these lines, in the best of health, happiness, spirits, etc., possible.

The Texas Department of Safety estimates 77 deaths on our highways during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Let us lower that estimate.

Don't drink and drive! *** Our modern jet age reduces long distance miles to minutes and it is not uncommon to hear of someone having breakfast in Paris and dinner in Rome.

One can be assured, moreover, that anywhere you go in this world, the spirit of Christmas exists. Holiday greetings, when offered with sincerity, are understood instantly, no matter what the language.

Below are a few ways to say "Merry Christmas" to individuals in foreign lands: Bulgaria - Chestita Koleda, Croatia - Sretan Bojic, Czech - Vesele Vanoce, Denmark - Glaedelig Jul, France - Joyeux Noel, Germany - Fri5hliche Weihnachten, Ireland - Nodlaig Mhaith Chugnat, Italy - Buon Natale, Poland - Weselych Swiat, Portugal/Brazil - Boas Festas, Spain - Feliz Navidad, Ukrania - Srozhdestvom Krisovym, Wales - Nadolig Llawen. *** We all have our own particularly meaningful memories of Christmases past and it's those memories that remind us of the love and joy that is truly the spirit of the season.

For some, Christmas memories are of the entire family gathering together.

This is always especially meaningful to parents whose children have scattered throughout the land and have "come home" for the holidays.

Perhaps helping others less fortunate provides outstanding memories for some. Inviting a lonely elderly person to join in your Christmas dinner or donating carefully - selected foods and gifts to your favorite charity organization makes one feel very much in tune with the holiday theme. Often, our most poignant memories come from such expressions of selflessness.

For others, special Christmas memories go farther back in time --- to younger days when simple hopes and dreams prevailed. The memory of the first time you earned the money yourself for Mom's gift comes to mind. You might still recall the feeling of anticipation and pride as she opened

"your" gift. Of course, her response couldn't have been better --- she was thrilled!

Music is always a special part of Christmas and the voices of carolers take on a more potent significance when heard through the halls of hospitals and convalescent homes.

Spreading cheer to those who will not be able to go home for Christmas is indeed a heartwarming memory for those who've participated in this thoughtful act.

A child's excitement at Christmas is especially delightful and memorable.

Who can resist getting caught up in Santa Claus, candy - filled stockings, midnight toy assemblings and the wide - eyed expectancy of kids being trotted off to bed on Christmas Eve. Many of us claim our fondest memories when recalling Christmases spent with children and we all agree that nothing quite matches the pleasure of sharing Christmas with the youngsters.

In perfect harmony with the season, our most cherished memories are certainly those of love. *** Can you remember the aroma of candles burning on the Christmas tree?

If so, you have some precious memories of a bygone era, the time of the old - fashioned Christmas.

Most of us have only handed - down stories to evoke that special bit of Americana. According to these reminiscences, here is what Christmas was like many years ago: Dashing through the snow in a one horse open sleigh was not just a song, it was a very real experience during the holiday season, with harness bells jingling away as you crossed fields blanketed with snow.

At home, the old wood stove would be hard at work. Maybe mother would be making a batch of candy or baking some of her delicious holiday cookies.

There was wood to be brought in for the stove and fireplace; that was brother's job, while sister helped in the kitchen.

There was the tree --- a real fir, pine or spruce tree --- decorated with strings of popcorn made from homegrown corn, apples from the orchard, and handmade paper cones.

Even shopping was a special treat in those days; the wood stove in the local store would give out its warmth and spices in open bins would give off their wonderful aroma. On the counter, there were jars of colored candies to entice the youngsters.

On Christmas Eve, church bells would summon the faithful to special services; or perhaps there would be a Christmas play performed.

In the morning, there were gifts to open, gifts that had been fashioned by hand. There might be a hand - carved whistle, hand - knit socks, or carefully embroidered handkerchiefs. Whatever the gift, you knew it had been made with love and received it in that spirit.

Later that Christmas Day, the family would gather in the kitchen, the biggest room in the house, at a long table burdened with holiday foods.

There would be Christmas turkey or ham or goose, pies that had been baked the day before, as well as special holiday breads.

After dinner, the youngsters would take their sleds to coast down snowy slopes; or, they might head for the pond with their ice skates, At the end of the day, visiting uncles, aunts and cousins would pile into a sleigh or bobsled as the horses stamped their feet and shook their harnesses. And off they would go, shouting goodnight and " Christmas" under the Christmas stars,

SPJST And The Wonders Of Christmas On KNCT - TV Christmas Day on KNCT features 7 holiday presentations to enhance the spirit of that day for all ages.

Santa's Surprise starts the day at 8 a.m. followed _ by the beauty of Christmas With The Morman Tabernacle Choir and Shirley Verrett at 9. The Nutcracker ballet sweeps everyone into fantasy at 10 and .11:30 brings Jessye Norman's Christmas Symphony. Christmas carols continue with Robert Shaw's Christmas Festival at 1, then Bert and Ernie tell the story of Christmas Eve on Sesame Street at 2:30. A beautiful Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols caps off the day at 3:30 reciting the history of our favorite traditions.

A day for the whole family to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.

Another wonder of the season is the three part presentation of "Box of Delights" on WONDERWORKS. Airing Saturday, December 26th at 7 p.m., children (and adults) will delight in this tale of a "magical box." *** CHRISTMAS WITH THE MORMON TABERNACLE CHOIR AND SHIRLEY VERRETT A holiday special from the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, Utah, presents the 325 - member Mormon Tabernacle Choir in concert with opera diva Shirley Verrett. Set amid the bright lights and poinsettias of the Tabernacle, the musical program includes such Christmas favorites as "Joy to the World," "0 Holy Night," and a haunting rendition of "I Wonder as I Wander."

Of Bylaw Committee Meeting Notice

JESSYE NORMAN'S CHRISTMAS SYMPHONY Diva Jessye Norman sings a variety of Christmas hymns and carols in a performance from England's Ely Cathedral. The American Boychoir, Bournemouth Symphony the Orchestra, the Ely Cathedral Choristers, and the Vocal Arts Chorus join Norman in an evening filled with song. In addition to the traditional tunes "0 Holy Night," "Silent Night," "Good Christian Men Rejoice," and "The Holly and the Ivy," Norman sings a new carol written especially for her.

CHRISTMAS EVE ON SESAME STREET *** This musical Christmas special for the whole family features the Muppets, cast of "Sesame Street," and skaters from Holiday on Ice. Three original songs highlight the holiday program including "True Blue Miracle" by Carol Hall and "Keep Christmas With You" and "I Hate Christmas" by Sam Pottle and David Axlerod.

PLACE: SPJST Supreme Lodge, Temple, Texas "Even though Article 20 of the Bylaws permits recommendations for changes to the bylaws to be submitted to secretary of the committee not later than 60 days prior to the convention, I believe the earlier parties will submit their recommendations, the better it will be for the benefit of all concerned.

The parties may need to be reminded that the recommended changes should be signed. It should also be helpful if a party is recommending a change to a particular bylaw that he or she specifically mention which bylaw they are recommending the change to. This would help eliminate confusion when there may be some doubt as to which bylaw the recommendation pertains to." (From letter received from Mr. Sidney Kacir, Legal advisor.)

News From Lodge No. 32, Victoria

Sunday, December 6, 1987 the lodge meeting began at 1 p.m. with President Johnnie Krizan presiding. Pledge to the flag was led by Kevin Dobecka and Keith Hykel. The SPJST pledge was led by Kevin Dobecka; all remained standing for a moment of silence in honor of our Brother John F. Zapalac who passed away on November 30, 1987 at the age of 94. He was our member since 1916.

Reading of the minutes of our last meeting was by Barbara Hykel. The treasurer's report was given by Karen Kroll and the financial secretary report was given by George Straten. All reports were approved as read.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz reported on her youth club activities.

We were glad to have and meet State Youth Director Claudette Reese who came to visit with us.

Chairman George Straten reported on the Board of Trustees' meeting that was held Friday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. A discussion was held about the Appreciation Day. The date was set for Sunday, January 10; this Appreciation Party will be for all the workers who helped us at our annual picnic and for all those who worked at our booth during Westfest. On this same day (January 10th), our lodge will hold its regular meeting beginning at 1 p.m., as usual. After the meeting, our officers will be installed.

The election results are as follows: President -- Johnnie Krizan Vice Pres. -- Robert Dobecka Secretary -- Barbara Hykel Treasurer -- Karen Kroll Financial Sec. -- George Straten Flag Bearer -- Shirley Dobecka Reporter -- Ruth Krizan Youth Leader -- Willie Mae Schuetz Assistant YLs. -- Peggy Dobecka and Rose Uptmor Delegates are Johnnie Krizan, Robert Dobecka, George Straten and Barbara Hykel. Today's door prize was won by Karen Kroll. The progressive prize names drawn were Edmond L. Hegar, $10 and Michael Parma, $6.

After all the business was taken care of, our Christmas Party started with all enjoying the social and playing games until the turkey supper was served, followed by a youth program.

After the program ended, there was a knock on the door and we heard"Ho! Ho! Ho!" and here came "Ole" Santa! The children started yelling and running to him, as always, telling him what they want for Christmas. After all the bags of goodies were given away, he bid farewell to all of us.

Now, the most important joy began with passing out all the gifts that were under the beautiful Christmas tree.

Happiness was seen on all faces. This was a very successful day, even though we had a storm come through Cottonwood at about 3:30 p.m. We had big wind, hard rain and some hail.

When it was getting late in the night, everyone was ready to go home. What a day!

Remember the date, January 10, 1988 meeting at 1 p.m., followed by the Appreciation Party for all the workers. * So until next time, have a very joyous happy, healthy Christmas Day and a happy, happy New Year 1988.

The December meetin g for Lodge No. 32 was held along with a Christmas supper. The supper be gan at 6:30 p.m. Chairman Evelyn Horelka planned the meal with everyone providin g the sweets.

The youth club led the Christmas carol sine - a - long with everyone joining in for entertainment.

Guests attending were Joan Malik, Linda Spiller, Annie Orsak and Nelson Arnold.

Election of officers was held during the meeting. Officers elected for the comin g year are: President -- John Motal Vice President -- Adolf Motal Sec./Reporter -- Kathy Ahlstrom Treasurer -- Ella Arnold Trustee (3) -- Edward Malik Youth Leader -- Johnny Richardson Assistant YL -- Becky Richardson Michael Ahlstrom and Lois Elles were elected delegates to the SPJST Convention in 1988. Alternates elected were Adolf Motal and Valeria Motal.

Ella Arnold asked that everyone please contact her to turn in their hours for "Fraternalism for 1987" as soon as possible after the first of the year. Many members work long hours, especially for the Czech Fest, and we do want our lodge to have a good and accurate report for the Supreme Lodge.

Attendance prizes after the meeting were won, by Wayne Spiller, Alfred Horelka, Ben Malina, Mary Taylor, Henrietta Vanek and Ella Arnold.

Jason Motal won the attendance prize for the youth.

We are happy to report that our Lodge No. 32 members Calvin and Georgia Horelka are the proud parents of a baby boy born on December 1st.

Evelyn and Alfred Horelka are the proud grandparents.

Lodge No. 35, Elk Dear Members: On December 13 the meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flag Bearer Jesika Tierce.

The president asked the members to stand for a moment of silence honoring our departed Sister Betty Kunkel. We extend our sympathy to her family.

Our visitors were Ora Lee Burney, Charles Trickett, Sandra Clemons and Brother Leonard Mikeska. We welcome you and come back again.

Secretary Rosemary Banik read the minutes of the November meeting.

They were approved.

Treasurer Rosemary Banik then gave the treasurer's report.

Youth Leader Louise Burney said there were 17 members and 2 social members at the youth club meeting.

The youth all brought canned goods to make a basket for a needy family.

All youth are urged to submit a design for the T - Shirt contest. The youth club members are still selling cookbooks; be sure and get one.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Timmy and Tommy Pavelka, Charlene Stead and Sandra Smith.

A graduation gift was presented to Dawn Pavelka from the mother lodge.

Brother Leonard Mikeska then installed the officers for 1988. He also thanked the lodge for the invitation and also spoke a few words.

After the meeting "High Chapprall," a band played for our entertainment. A dinner of turkey and dressing and all the trimmings was served to all.

Our next meeting will be on January 10 t 3 p.m., so let's make 1988 a good year and everyone work together.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The December Lodge No. 47 meeting was held on Sunday, December 6 at 2 p.m. with President Jerry Pechal presiding. Flag Bearers Tommy Gibson and Amy Kohutek brought in the flags and led reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. A moment of silence was held in memory of our departed Brother Werner A. Dornhoefer who passed away recently.

May we honor his memory forever and deepest sympathy to the surviving family.

President Pechal welcomed everyone and these visitors Ann Balusek of Buckholts Lodge No. 15, Della Marinik, Carole Pechal, Freddie Schroeder, Robert and Dorothy Bockholts of Robstown were recognized. We enjoyed having you as visitors and hope you are making plans to come again.

Sister Dorothy Skrabanek, secretary, read the roll call of officers, trustees and sales representatives. She also read the minutes of the November 1st lodge meeting which were approved. Correspondence read included a thank you card from the get well card sent to Brother George Divis recently, a thank you from President Jerry Pechal for visits, cards, flowers and prayers while he was hospitalized for 15 days, a Christmas card from Dan and Helen Wiley from Houston and a letter commending our dedicated Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky and Assistant Judy Pechal for all that they have done in this past year for the youth club.

We welcomed, as new members in our lodge, Jami Elicia Evins, Sherry Lynn Evins, Donna Kay Baca and Monroe M. Jimenez. A warm welcome to each of you and come to the meetings and other activities whenever possible.

Those we knew of being hospitalized were Sisters Annie Chupik, Agnes De Palma, Norma Mares and Brothers Edwin Jez, Gordon Smith and President Jerry Pechal. We hope everyone is recovering nicely and you'll be good as new before long.

President Pechal reminded everyone of the times of the Christmas Party and asked the sisters to bring a salad or sweet for the supper. He thanked Brother Woodrow Marek for buying the refrigerator while he was in the hospital; also thanked Henry Janacek and Robert Hoelcher for enclosing the west vent to keep the rain out.

The other officers and chairpersons all gave good reports. The board minutes were read by Sister Adeline Kohutek.

District II Director Willie E. Kohutek reported on the audit of the Supreme Lodge being done at that

time and also announced that he will, again, be a candidate for director of District II in the forthcomirig SPJST Convention in June, 1988.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky reported 40 youth, 6 visitors and 4 adults present. She reported on the hayride they had recently and thanked the Novosads for use of the premises and the tractor to pull the trailor. She thanked the parents and others who bought the Tom Watts products from the youth club members. The Beseda group that won the State title danced at the National Guard Armory and State King Michael Morris, along with State Queen Melissa Victorick were in the Christmas Parade in Temple, recently.

Next, we proceeded to finish the elections. Those serving on the Balloting Committee were Rose Marie Orsag, Bertha Capps, Della Mares, Ruth Janacek, Helen Janacek, James Skrabanek, Ralph Kohutek and Ann Hejl.

Trustees elected were Woodrow Marek, Dan Balusek, Henry Janacek, Jerome Orsag, Elmer Skrabanek, Wallace Jez and Anton Vitek.

Bar chairpersons will be Henry and Helen Janacek.

Cleaning chairpersons elected were Charles and Judy Sirney, and ticket chairperson will be Dorothy Pechal.

Brother Woodrow Marek was re elected as an auditor.

Those celebrating birthdays in December are Wesley Tupy, Harry Gersbach, Mary Ann Billeck and Dorothy Pechal. Wedding anniversaries will be observed by Woodrow and Gladys Marek, Jerry and Dorothy Pechal and my mother, Theresa Chlapek.

Door prize winners were Theresa Chlapek and Frank Klinkovsky. The number who attended the meeting were 76 members and 6 visitors. We are hoping you all are making plans to come to the next meeting to start a new year right by coming to every meeting in 1988.

On behalf of my husband and myself, we wish to thank everyone who helped with the duties at Seaton Star Hall in 1987 and for attending activities that are held. This year my husband was hospitalized twice and also I lost my father. I wish to thank those who helped out so much. I won't attempt to name everyone for fear I might miss someone, so a great big "THANK YOU" to each of you!

We enjoyed a good lunch after the last meeting, also the fellowship was enjoyed by those present.

The Christmas Party was enjoyed by 375 members even though the weather did not cooperate. The program by our youth was enjoyed by everyone and Santa Claus made his appearance.

Happy hour and supper were next on the day's agenda. A surprise for Brother Jerry Pechal was an award of a plaque for his many years of devoted service to the lodge by the board members. He was really nervous after that presentation. The "Brother and Sister Award" was presented to Brother Henry and Sister Helen Janacek. Congratulations! More on this, later, also photo to follow.

Thanks to all who worked at the party or brought food.

The next meeting will be Sunday, January 3, 1988 at 2 p.m. with installation of officers for the new year.

The Old Machine Left Intact At Ellinger Lodge 51 Dear Members: Unbelievable, but, "You better believe it."

It happened, again! The same old story, the same old machine continues to generate the power of operating the Lodge No. 51, Ellinger. This system has been in control of its existence and complete operation for many years without any repairs or replacements.

Surprisingly, it continues to function satisfactorily enough to remain in operation and even improving its growth.

Do you know what we are trying to tell you? Lodge No. 51 has approximately 200 members of mixed ages, and yet, the lodge is being run by a trio of senior citizen members. That is why we said it is unbelievable and so surprising that it is functioning as is.

Oh, yes, the same old "GANG" had to take the same old responsibilities upon themselves for another year.

That means Ludwig Kocian is still your president, and F.R. Hruska is your vice president and yours truly is the rest of it -- Secretary - Financial Secretary, etc., etc.

Sometimes we get "lucky" and we were fortunate to find a qualified member for a delegate and alternate.

Elected as a delegate to the convention was Brother Gus L. Hruska and Brother F.R. Hruska was elected as an alternate.

Re - elected also were Ed Tobias and Gus L. Hruska to the Auditing Committee.

So, until our next meeting in March -- "Don't get mad, get glad," and come to the March meeting. The date and place will be announced in the Vestnik a week or so prior to the meeting.

Dear Members and Friends: As this year of 1987 is coming to a close, I thought I would write a few lines from our Lodge 80 to close the lodge activities for 1987.

We held our annual meeting on Sunday, December 6th. President Bohac called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. He welcomed all the members to our meeting and asked us to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and to spend a moment of silence in honor of our deceased members.

With all the officers present, the secretary was asked to read the minutes of the November, 1987 meeting. They were accepted as read.

Under correspondence we had a letter from the Bell County Youth Livestock Show. Secretary Latham mentioned that we donated $100 in 1986, so the members voted that we give the same sum for 1987.

Secretary Latham gave a good report from other activities at the hall and also from the bingo games.

The members present gave Secretary Latham a great ovation for the work he is doing at the hall and, especially the work he has done in the kitchen lately. Thank you, again, Glen.

A motion was made by Brother Rhode that we pay the kitchen chairman the same salary as the bar chairman. Motion carried.

On the sick list we had Henry Balusek and Lillian Foerster. Both were in the hospital, but are home and doing O.K. Additional insurance was taken out

by Kevin Cavanauth, Patricia Hightower, Ryan Martinets, Amy Martinets and Andrew Mills.

I am sorry to report that Maggie Kellough, who was a member of our lodge, passed away since our November meeting.

There was no other old business and it came time to elect our officers for 1988. They were all re - elected, namely: D.I. Bohac -- president Jerry Massar -- vice president Glenda Liles -- financial secretary Glen Latham -- secretary/treasurer Joe Barabas, Jr. -- Reporter I will give you the names of our lodge's delegates to the SPJST Convention after we have our January meeting and also various committees will be elected at this meeting.

Our door prize winners, at the meeting, were Dan Grossman, Rieshia Grossman, Monk Ivicic, Glenda Liles and D.I. Bohac (who has a birthday in December) also got a prize.

My sincere wish is that all of you out there have a glorious and Merry Christmas, a prosperous Happy and Healthy New Year 1988.

Lodge No. 81, Needville Dear Members: On December 13 at 12:15 p.m., our Lodge No. 81 met for a turkey and dressing dinner, with members bringing covered dishes of vegetables and pastry. Willie Mae Kuykendall baked the turkey and dressing for which we thank her and all the other ladies. It was all very delicious!.

We were very happy to have Brother Jerry Prochazka and his lovely wife, Delores and Mr. and Mrs. Vyvial with us.

At 1:30 p.m , our President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order.

We were led in repeating the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag by Louise Neuman.

All officers answered the roll call.

Our Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes and also the financial report.

Willie Mae Kuykendall gave the treasurer's report. Gilbert Walzel gave the special - fund report. All reports were accepted as read.

President Charlie Matcek reported he delivered the apples and oranges to our S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home. He also read a thank you card from our Rest Home Administrator Harvey Marx for the fruit the rest home residents will enjoy.

District V Director Jerry Prochazka spoke to us on loans, life insurance and to the Bylaw Committee on their duty. He also said SPJST now has the honor of having a member of Lodge No. 191, Miss Thompson now "Miss Texas" to ride on a float in Lufkin Chamber of Commerce Parade.

Marion Teykl and August Schwettman were reported to be convalescing at home from the hospital.

Wednesday, December 23, 1987—VESTNiK/5 Christmas cards will be sent to the elderly members of SPJST in the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home and also those in their homes.

Mary Werner read a beautiful Christmas poem.

Delores Prochazka drew the door prize winners' names. They were Delores Macha and Vlasta Hurta.

We adjourned for a social hour in which we sang Christmas carols around the Christmas tree which Santa left with "Goodie Bags" around the tree. Sheryl Macha and Shelley Macha were Santa's helpers and distributed the goodie bags.

After that, we again engaged in lunch before we departed for homes, with memories of an enjoyable day.

Our next meeting will be on January 10, also with a dinner at 12:15 p.m. and meetin g at 1:30 p.m. Why not come and socialize with us. again?

December 14 SPJST Meeting Dear Members: Sister Ellen Gerlich led the group in reciting the pledge to our flag, followed by Sister Salac reading the minutes of the last meeting which were approved as read.

Corrrespondence included a thank you card from Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra for use of hall for practice, family of Sister Angelina Ozymy, and a thank you card from City of Dallas.

Sunshine Committee Report: New baby cards were sent to Frank and Kelli Vrla (baby boy), and David and Pam Vrla (baby girl); get well cards to Donald Petr, Alvin Hamusek, Eddie Chmelar, Albin Vrana, and Mrs. Ardis Hagner.

House Committee Report: Brother Salac fixed the roof leak; he reported Brother Olson replaced the motor in the vent - a - hood and made a dolly for the bar. Many thanks!

Decorating Committee Report: Thanks were given to Chairwoman Betty Olson and Wanda Petr for leading the group in decorating our lodge very beautifully.

Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council had a Christmas Party at SPJST Lodge 130, a great crowd attended.

The Czech Culture Society meets at Lodge No. 130 on February 29th.

Fraternal Coordinator Schulz says lodge dues are being received.

Hall Rental Report: Brother Petr gave scheduled dates for hall activities.

Lodge No. 139, Danbury Report At the December 9 meeting Danbury Lodge No. 139 had District V Director Jerry Prochazka as a guest. Director Prochazka told the gathering of the changes in the loan rates and he gave a comprehensive report on direct billing for insurance premiums. He fielded many questions the members had about the impact of direct billing on the local lodges.

Financial Secretary Helen Filipp announced that members Velma Boyd, Ella Marie Filipp, and Frank Filipp had all been hospitalized recently.

Lodge No. 191, Lufkin I sit here looking at my Christmas list and see that not too many items have been checked off! But then my thoughts switched over to all the efforts, dedication, work and joy that many of us had building our first Christmas float for the city parade.

The most inspiring thoughts for all of us, throughout the building of the float, were that "Miss Texas" Jo Thompson would be riding and representing the State of Texas, the City of Lufkin and, last but not least, our SPJST Lodge No. 191. I want to thank Miss Jo Thompson for giving us the honor of accepting our invitation to represent us and, in turn, all of us were more than honored to have her.

The weather didn't cooperate too well with the City of Lufkin on Sunday, December 6th. The parade was postponed for that day but re scheduled for Monday, the 7th.

Everything turned out real nice and the smiles and happy faces of all kids from one to ninety were plainly visible.

1 want to thank the many people who helped with this project, making over 2,000 flowers, loaning the equipment to build the float and all contributions to make this possible. I cannot put down the names for fear of missing someone, but each and everyone of you know who you are!

Again, this gives me the opportunity to wish everyone the opportunity to wish everyone in SPJST country a very Merry Christmas and a joyous holiday.

My dear wife writes this little poem for your joy: "May the Christmas stars sing together, Light your way to a bright Christmas dawn, Echo in your hearts forever, Even when Christmas is gone."

Birthday Club Of Lodge 88 The Birthday Club Sisters met for their regular monthly meeting on December 9, 1987 in the lodge dining room. The meeting was opened by President Rita Alexander at 11:15 a.m.

Secretary Rosalee Kostom read the minutes of the previous meeting which were approved as read. She also read correspondence from the families of Stella Bukowski and Louise Chudej; both deceased in October, 1987.

Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut gave the card report and a report on Mary Schenburn, who had back surgery but is doing so well that she expects to go home this weekend.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the financial report and also reported that our Sister Tillie Bily gave us a nice donation. Thank you, Tillie.

There was no old business but election of officers for 1988 was our new business. There's always so much joy in our club, but, at the same time, we have a great deal of sadness, too. Our former Club member, who moved to La Grange, Geraldine Hlozek, lost one of her grandsons, a young man, in a car accident several weeks ago. Geraldine and Bill, we are sympathizing with you, and deeply care.

This was a joyous occasion on November 28, 1987 when Della and Amos Kadlecek celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary with their children and friends at a dance at Lodge 88. Their daughter, Marian, stated that her parents enjoyed dancing and Amos presented Della with a beautiful diamond emerald necklace. God Bless you both!

On December 2, the Birthday Club served a superb turkey dinner with the Board of Trustees and their spouses and the Lodge 88 officers and their spouses invited. Kathy Trefell, chairman of the hostesses, planned a delicious lunch. Her assistants were Candy Cockrell, who worked for Dub Pulley, Gladys Pulley, Mike Trefell, Homer Alexander and Vice President

Edna Froehlich and Betty Kulhanek.

The tables were decorated by Rosalee Kostom.

The Sisters who had birthdays in December are Gladys Pulley, Ardith McClellan, Lillian Finn and also one of our precious shut - ins, Mrs. Albina Drawe. "Happy Birthday" was sung.

I will include a few articles about some of our members of our Society who are not members of our club, but feel like should be mentioned. Every month I'll write a few extras, if you don't mind.

We are delighted that Franklin Bravenec is back with us after a long bout in the hospital and at home. He went for one surgery and ended up with two, which was quite hard to tolerate, but Franklin is very strong and has lots of faith, and many friends who were pulling for him, also a good faithful wife, Almeda. He's one of our leading sales representatives.

Tom and Lydia Marsh had a beautiful trip to Arkansas, where they saw some beautiful scenery, of course, the apples had been picked. Tom's brother lives in northern Arkansas and they visited with him. On their way home they visited with Lydia's brother, Rudy and family in West.

While there, Maxine prepared a dinner for all.

Now, I have to also mention my Thanksgiving dinner, which was a busy, but gratifying day. All my grandchildren were here. Thirty - nine people came including Grandma Hanka from Needille, and she was having a "blast."

One other occasion is Micky Rice's mother, Mrs. Bucek, from Schulenburg will celebrate her 90th birthday December 12th.

Our Choral Group under the direction of Tim Kostom will go to the Needville Rest Home Saturday, December 19th to cheer up our people there who are lonely and many enjoy the Czech songs.

Friendship Club Of Ft Worth Report Dear Members and Friends: The December meeting was well attended, and everyone was in a jovial mood. The delicious meal, exchange of gifts and games were enjoyed by all.

We made welcome new members Lucille Kret and Lena Marett.

The birthday members were Janie Allen, Camille Bolcer, Dolly McGill, Ann Sustala, Agnes Reznicek, Lucille Kret, Rose Romeo and Maria Tesar.

The elected officers for the year 1988 are as follows: President -- Josephine Prochaska Vice President -- Rose Steinman Secretary -- Merle Kovar Treasurer -- Lydia Alholm Reporter -- Mary Pavey A monetary gift was presented to Maria Tesar as a token of appreciation for her faithful service to our organization as president for the past 20 years.

We express sincere sympathy to member Homer Johnston and his

family on the loss of his wife, Gertrude, who passed away on November 18th; also to member Elma Anderson who has had two sisters who have passed away within the last six months; to the family of Helen Paprskar who passed away on November 26th and to the family of Millie Stroleny who passed away on November 30th. May these dear friends rest in peace.

Get well wishes we express to Frank Houzvicka of Dallas, who is still undergoing various tests after spending nine days in the hospital.

We extend our congratulations to two couples who were married recently; namely, Lise Uhl and Michael Landsfeld, who were married at St. John's Catholic Church in Ennis on November 28th. Michael works as a butcher at one of our local supermarkets here in Colleyville. He boastfully states that his best teachers for his skills in this trade were his father, Joe Landsfield and his uncle, Frank Liska.

The second couple, Catherine Schneider and Richard Ross Hyde were married on December 5th at the Ridglea United Methodist Church in Ft. Worth. Catherine is the daughter of Mary and Edward Schneider, and the granddaughter of my aunt, Mrs. Mary Botik. The reception at the Ridglea Country Club was a nice family and relative re - acquaintance occasion.

As the Holiday Season approaches, many SPJST lodge parties are planned for a festive time, and many will travel great distances to be with family, therefore, our son, Tony, his wife, Kathy and three sons and possibly Tony's mother and father - in - law from Illinois will arrive here after Christmas. Being a Notre Dame oriented family, they will all attend the Notre Dame - Texas A&M Cotton Bowl football game on New Year's Day. The Sister Charlotte Vesely 50 - year Jubilee of Religious Profession will be celebrated on Sunday, January 3, 1988 at St. Thomas Church in Ft. Worth at the 4 p.m. Mass.

In closing, I would like to thank Editor Rudy Sefcik for always being prompt in getting my letters printed for the last seven years. Keeping in touch with the editor and his wife, Maxine, with a personal note every month will be missed, but I declined to take the secretary and reporter's duties for another year.

Czech Class At Alief Alief Evening School under auspices of AISD (Alief Independent School District) is again offering a Conversational Czech course at Hastings High School. The location of this school is between Bellaire Blvd. on the south and Alief - Clodine on the north on the southwest side of the intersection of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the community of Alief.

Lo, Lord will come and His Light to the world with Him! (This is my translation of the above chant.) The feast of St. Nicholas celebrated on December 6th is in the Advent, which is a time of longing expectancy. The motto of this time is: "Rorate coeli, desuper, et nu bes pluant justum (Drop , , .down, ye heavens, from above, and let

the skies pour down the Righteous One). Much shorter but to the point Czech chant of the same goes like this: "Rosu dejte nebesa již zhůry ----."

"O heavens, give us the Dew from above ----." (Rosa - Dew - is the long awaited Jesus Christ.)

There are four weeks of Advent, representing four comings of the Son of God: the first in the flesh, the second in the hearts of the faithful thru the Holy Spirit, the third at the death of every man and the fourth at the Judgment Day. The fourth week is though never completed (X - mas Eve is regarded as not part of Advent), because the glory bestowed on the Saints at the Last Coming will never end. I remember Advents of my early youth as an altar boy at tlie' early masses at the convent church of St. Michael next door to our house and at later masses at the parish church of St. Lawrence in the centre of my hometown. Following the mother lodge and youth club meetings, the membership was treated to a delicious turkey and dressing meal.

The youth club's program was on "The Story of Christmas." The welcome was given by Kevin Dobecka and songs were led by Lanette Hykel.

Players for the "Story of Christmas" were by Mary -- Sharon Hrabal, Joseph -- Keith Hykel, Baby -Christy Elaine, Angels -- Celia Dobecka, Amy Hromadka, Kayla Hromadka, Sherri Lenart, Melenda Kolar, Stacy Mynar, Samantha Hrabal and Susan Hrabal.

Lodge 74, Lovelady YC Participates In Christmas Parade Dear Youth Members: I would like to commend all the mothers who put so much effort into the costumes for the Christmas float.

Everyone looked so colorful.

Our youth group will be having their Christmas Party this weekend and we have lots of prizes and fun things planned.

There is one game we have planned · that I would like to share with other youth clubs. It was given to me by a friend.

This is a scavenger hunt done with photos. You will need a few parents and a polaroid camera per group and several cars.

The adults drive and are in charge of taking the picture. Now give each group a Jist such as a picture of all of you with a cow, a picture of all of you holding a Sonic waitress, a picture of you with a law official.

This can. also be done without cameras by using baby pictures or having them go through their family photos.

A time limit is set for this game of an hour.

Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Taiton Youth Club Meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 30 Youth Club, along with the adult lodge · held their Christmas Party on December 6, 1987 at the Taiton Community Center. A noon meal was served with turkey and fried chicken and all the trimmings. Gifts were given to the members and all who helped with the youth club for the past year.

After the meal the adults had their meeting followed by the youth club meeting. We were happy to have Brother Matt and Sister Henrietta Vanek at our Christmas Party and meeting.

Sister Paprskar is survived by her husband, Mike Paprskar; three sons, Michael J., Jr., John E. and Stephen T. Paprskar; three daughters, Angela Casteel, Helen Brown and Kristi Gilcrease: 3 grandsons; two granddaughters and one sister, Rose Jaworski.

Recitation of the rosary was held at 7 p.m. on Friday at Harveson and Cole Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 28 at All Saints Catholic Church. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were by Thompson's Harveson and Cole Funeral Home.

Expression Of Sympathy

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 47, Seaton Star, on behalf of our entire membership, express our sincere sympathy to our departed brother WERNER DORNHOEFER, 65, who passed away in a Temple hospital Tuesday, November 17, 1987.

Services were held Friday, November 20 at the Temple Brethren Church with the Rev. Johnny Baletka and Dr. Mark Labaj officiating. Burial was in the Ocker Brethren Cemetery.

Sheffield Funeral Home of Temple was in charge of services.

Mr. Dornhoefer was born in the Ocker community, the son of early Bell County settlers, Lewis O. and Clara Pagel Dornhoefer. He graduated from Rosebud High School and attended A&M University. He was in the A&M Corps of Cadets and served in the Army during World War II. He married the former Lillian Motl in 1947. They lived in Temple all their married life. He was employed with the Santa Fe Railway and retired in 1986 after 39 years of service as a locomotive engineer.

He was an active sportsman and coached Little League baseball for many years.

He was a member of the Aggie Club, and the Texas A&M Former Students Association. He also was a member and deacon of the Temple Brethren Church.

Survivors are his wife, Lillian Dornhoefer of Temple; one son, J. Rick Dorrihoefer of Houston; one brother, Milton Dornhoefer of Seaton and two sisters, Lorene Wilde of Temple and Leona Gottschalk of Ratibor.

He was born on August 13, 1914 in Hackberry to the late Fred and Elizabeth Henneke Butschek. I-le married Irene Novak on October 1936 in Hallettsville. He was a memb of Sacred Heart Catholic Church i Hallettsville, SP JST Lodge No. 4, International Association of Boilermakers and International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. He retired from Cameron Iron Works in 1978.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 3 at St. Jerome's Catholic Church in Houston. Burial followed in Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m.

Monday, December 7 at Kubena Funeral Home in Hallettsville.

Surviving are his wife, Irene Butschek of Hallettsville; a daughter, Mrs. Varnell Dodd of Houston; a son, Allen Butschek Sr. of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Kiesel of Hallettsville and Miss Pearline Butschek of Houston; five brothers, Victor and Leroy Butschek, both of Hackberry, Frank Butschek of Hallettsville, Gilbert and Bob Butschek, both of Houston; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Each Christmas, music lovers everywhere are enthralled by the angelic sound of the Vienna Boys' Choir, lifted in songs of the season.

Whether performing on television or in one of their world - wide concerts, this talented group of young boys never ceases to delight listeners. And, why not? The group's history includes the "Golden Age" of music in Vienna.

Comprised of approximately 100 boys, the Vienna Boys' Choir is actually four separate groups, rotating concerts

abroad and at home, so that they are always available to perform at the Court Chapel in Vienna. It was for this purpose that the choir was originally created by the Emperor Maximilian I in 1498. He decreed that singers be chosen for service at the court with the state assuming responsibility for their education, plus their room and board.

Since then, the Vienna Boys' Choir has attracted youngsters from throughout Austria, including some illustrious names: Josef Haydn and Franz Schubert, for instance, were members in their youth.

Today, the choir travels throughout the world and reaches millions through the medium of television, besides. ln fact, it would probably amaze the Emperor to see just how far his court singers have traveled from the chapel where they originally performed!

One thing has not changed since those days, however, the standard of excellence maintained by these young musicians.

Their fresh, young voices are especially welcome as they sing beloved hymns and carols for the whole world to enjoy at Christmas.

Festive f'lowery Messages Especially during the Victorian era, the floral legend was prominent. The receiver of a bouquet from her admirer could either smell the message or read it. Each tlower had a s11eeial meaning.

The design of Christmas cards was influenced from this·· Victorian language.

Merry Christmas Rosemary Bush The herb, rosemary, has been associated with Christmas for centuries. Legend has it that on the way to Egypt, Mary washed the Baby Jesus' clothes and spread them over a rosemary bush to dry in the sun. That is how the rosemary bush got its lovely fragrance, according to the legend.

Mistletoe Musings While other plants arc rooted in the earth, the mistletoe grows in air. As you go riding along the highway, observing the winter scenery, away up high in some trees you will sec some dark green dumps; those dumps are probably mistletoe. Mistletoe is a parasite getting its sustenance from the host tree. Birds eat the shiny, white mistletoe berries, the berry seeds ding to their bills and when these birds sharpen their bills on the bark of trees, those seeds arc scattered. Since mistletoe is often in tall trees, sometimes the easiest way for some people to get it is to shoot it down!

Kissing under the mistletoe has long been one of the merry customs of Christmas!

Merry Christmas Origin of Wreath The great Della Robbia family of Florence, Italy, supposedly inspired the decorative wreaths for windows and doors. The popular wreaths of foliage and fruits were first made as small, circular garlands to surround figurines. Eventually, the circles of greenery grew in size and their many variations make them a true work of art.
