Taylor Lodge Presents $800 To Johns Community Hospital

Balla demonstrates how to use "Christine Clean," the Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation_[CPR] doll, presented to Johns Community Hospital through the Auxiliary with funds provided by Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29. Shown with Mr. Balla is Mrs. Edith Shiller of the Auxiliary, and Jerry Tallas who presented the $800 provided by SPJST Lodge 29. The doll will be used in training hospital staff and others interested in helping to save_ lives_through the use o£ tactics designed to restore breathing or heart action in patients in emergency situations. The American Boychoir, Symphony Bournemouth the Orchestra, the Ely Cathedral Choristers, and the Vocal Arts Chorus join. Norman in an evening filled with song. In addition to the traditional tunes "0 Holy Night," "Silent Night," "Good Christian Men Rejoice," and "The Holly and the Ivy," Norman sings a new carol written especially for her.

SPJST And The Wonders Of Christmas On KNCT - TV Christmas Day on KNCT features 7 holiday presentations to enhance the spirit of that day for all ages.

Santa's Surprise starts the day at 8 a.m. followed _ by the beauty of Christmas With The Morman Tabernacle Choir and Shirley Verrett at 9. The Nutcracker ballet sweeps everyone into fantasy at 10 and 11:30 brings Jessye Norman's Christmas Symphony. Christmas carols continue with Robert Shaw's Christmas Festival at 1, then Bert and Ernie tell the story of Christmas Eve on Sesame Street at 2:30. A beautiful Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols caps off the day at 3:30 reciting the history of our favorite traditions.

A day for the whole family to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.

Another wonder of the season is the three part presentation of "Box of Delights" on WONDERWORKS. Airing Saturday the 12th, 19th, and 26th at 7 p.m., children (and adults) will delight in this tale of a "magical box."

CHRISTMAS WITH THE MORMON TABERNACLE CHOIR AND SHIRLEY VERRETT A holiday special from the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, Utah, presents the 325 - member Mormon Tabernacle Choir in concert with opera diva Shirley Verrett. Set amid the bright lights and poinsettias of the Tabernacle, the musical program includes such Christmas favorites as "Joy to the World," "0 Holy Night," and a haunting rendition of "I Wonder as I Wander."

This musical Christmas special for the whole family features the Muppets, cast of "Sesame Street," and skaters from Holiday on Ice. Three original songs highlight the holiday program including "True Blue Miracle" by Carol Hall and "Keep Christmas With You" and "I Hate Christmas" by Sam Pottle and David Axlerod.

The parties may need to be reminded that the recommended changes should be signed. It should also be helpful if a party is recommending a change to a particular bylaw that he or she specifically mention which bylaw they are recommending the change to. Uncorrected Minutes Of District VI Fall Social District Meeting The fall District VI meeting and social was held at Lodge No. 40, El Campo - Hillje on October 25, 1987.

Registration was held from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. Lunch consisting of chicken spaghetti, beans, salad, garlic bread and desse rts, was served.

The meeting was called to order at 1 p.m. by District VI President Albert Olsovsky. The pledge to the flag was led by District VI Flag Bearer John Thomas Richardson. A moment of silence in respect of our deceased

The following guests were introduced by Second Vice President Annie Vahalik: SL Vice President Bernie Gebala and his wife, Evelyn; Mr. and Mrs. Anton Pokorny of Lodge No. 29, Taylor; District VI Director Matt Vanek and his wife, Henrietta; Rest Home Director Erwin Holy and his wife, Evelyn; and SFR Jerome Hlavaty and his wife, Henrietta.

The spring District VI meeting will be held at Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville.

President Olsovsky appointed Joe Nezval and William Berkovsky and First Vice President Wokaty appointed Mike Ahlstrorn to the Nominating Committee.

District Director Matt Vanek brought greetings from the Home Office. He spoke of the death of District I Director Ben Trcalek. He also brought greetings from past SL President Nick Morris. There would be a Czech Pastry Contest at the next district meeting. More details would appear in the Vestnik. There would also be a Deer Contest for members during the upcoming deer season.

Youth Club members would be eligible for a $1,000 scholarship from the Youth Fund. One $500 scholarship per district would be given. Members were urged to talk to Publication Committee Member Sophie Dybaia about some proposed changes for the Vestnik. Director Vanek said there was money available for farms, homes and commercial sites. Sixty - nine lodges were participating in direct billing with 33,011 certificates on direct accounts.

He concluded by reminding everyone of the convention to be held in June in 1988 in Temple.

Sophie Dybala, Publication Committee, asked members for suggestions for the Vestnik.

SL Vice President Bernie Gebala reported that 46 percent of the SPJST business has been written since January of 1985. We are ranked the 27th largest insurance fraternal in the nation but licensed only in Texas.

Director Vanek was responsible for getting the Supreme Lodge to give scholarships to the Youth Club members. The interest rate on annuities is 8 percent and 9 percent on Universal Life. Vice President Gebala had brought an SPJST jacket, which sells for $20, as a door prize. He had also brought vests, which come in red and black, and any lodge that orders ten will get the lodge imprint free.

Anton Kellner, Jr. gave the treasurer's report. In the District Youth Fund, there was a balance of $140.37 on April 1st. Income was $1,976.10, expenses were $1,707.81, leaving a balance of $408.66 on September 1st. In the General Expense Fund, there was a balance of $535.54 on April 1st. Income was $550.00, expenses were $431.92, leaving a balance of $653.62 on September 1st.

There was a late check so the actual balance was $628.62 on September 1st.

District VI Youth Counselor Anita Roye gave her report. In June, the youth went on an educational trip to Galveston. Camp was held at Camp Wagon Wheel in Caldwell with the youth from District V. Forty - one youth and chaperones attended from District VI. The District VI YAD was held in Taiton with 85 craft entries, 10 talent entries and 2 scrapbooks.

Several of the district winners also won at State.

Frankie Vanek made a motion to adjourn and Rita Vanek seconded it.

The motion carried.

After the meeting, everyone enjoyed various kinds of entertainment. The State Talent winners performed their winning routines. Songs were sung by the Youth Club members. The German Dancers of El Campo High School and the Christian Square Dancers of El Campo performed several dances. A Wheel - of - Fortune game was played with prizes donated by the members. A dance was held with music provided by the Happy Home Boys. Door prizes were awarded throughout the afternoon.

District VI had a successful and enjoyable social district meeting.

Dear Members: Our lodge met on Sunday, November 8, 1987 at the Grant Building. President Annie Vahalik called the meeting to order and led the members in the pledge to our U.S. flag assisted by Nicholas Vahalik.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the previous meeting with a correction made.

Correspondence followed.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Co Youth Leader Evelyn Holy also gave their reports.

President Vahalik reported on the information she received on direct billing for our lodge. After a discussion, it was decided to check further into it.

A report was given on the fall District VI meeting hosted by El Campo - Hillje lodge. It was well attended and enjoyed by all. Thanks to President Rita Vanek and her lodge and the district officers for the wonderful job they did. Attending from our lodge were Annie, Philip and Nicholas Vahalik, Evelyn and Erwin Holy, Patsy and Helen Zabransky.

Our lodge will host the spring District VI meeting.

Our December meeting and Christmas Party were discussed and planned; it will be held Sunday, December 13 at Mr. Gatti's beginning at 2 p.m. A short meeting will be held followed by entertainment and a visit from Santa Claus. Lunch will be served as usual. Special door prizes will be given. Members and their families are invited.

Election of officers was held with all present officers being re - elected by acclamation. Delegates to the SPJST Convention will be voted on at the January meeting.

Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka gave his usual report. The meeting was adjourned. Refreshments and lunch were served and enjoyed. Door prize winner was Hilmer Galetka.

Members present with a birthday in October, November and December were Evelyn Holy, Victoria Zak, Janell Chudej, Anton Bolom and Emil Galetka. Winner of the birthday cake was Janell Chudej.

Our next meeting and Christmas Party will be held on Sunday, December 13 at Mr. Gatti's at 2 p.m.

When the lodge organized in 1902, it took the name "Cesti Bratri" (Czech Brothers) and, with 12 charter members whose family names were Marek, Haisler, Hejl, Zalman, Maresh, Ripple and Langer, was so to say, immediately, a self - supporting local lodge. Initial assistance came from Lodge No. 1 at Fayetteville and the Supreme Lodge which, at that time, had offices in La Grange.

The lodge offered fellowship, person - to - person support, and financial planning. At this time, Lodge 44 probably is the largest fraternal society group which calls Industry "home."

The Supreme Lodge, in the past and likewise today, is a source of financing of local businesses and farmers. The support to heritage projects, for higher education and concern for day - to day activities are highlights of SPJST. The ANNUAL MEETING is to be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Miroslav Petrusek on December 13 at 1 p.m.

Election of officers, election of a delegate to the 1988 SPJST Convention and discussions of local concern are the program for the afternoon.

Dear Members and Friends: The fourth quarterly meeting of Lodge No. 49, Rowena, was held November 4, 1987 in our lodge hall.

President Elizabeth Walther brought the meeting to order at 6:45 p.m. The usual business procedure was observed.

Correspondence from Supreme Lodge informed us that we may send two elected delegates and two alternates to the State Convention on June 19, 1988 in Temple, Texas. It was decided to elect the delegates and alternates in our February meeting.

Brother James Teplicek moved that we send a memorial for District I Director Ben F. Trcalek to our local Building Fund.

Committee reports were heard.

Jeffery R. Hoelscher was accepted as a new member.

Our Christmas Party and Game Night will be held on December 11 starting at 5:30 p.m. in the lodge hall.

Our lodge will furnish the meat and members and guests are to bring a side dish such as salads, vegetables, desserts, etc.

Members agreed to allow the Runnels, Concho and Tom Green Counties Czech Heritage Society to have the use of the hall for their meetings.

This will be a very important meeting, even more so than our regular quarterly meetings, because at this meeting we will be confronted with the responsibility of not only to elect our lodge officers for 1988, but also to elect our delegate and alternate for the state convention.

No. 92, Fort Worth

Dear Members and Friends: It has been several years since I have written to the Vestnik, so I may break the ice and let you know about our lodge and its members. I remember when I was young and joined the SPJST Lodge No. 92, it was around in

the Stockyards area, which pow is getting popular by Billy Bobs which is supposed to be one of the largest night spots around these parts.

Lodge No. 92 was, at first, together with the Sokol, but later they built their own building and a new SPJST Lodge No. 154 was organized.

Those long - ago days were very interesting; the members really thought the lodge was part of their lives; large attendance was always on Sunday and then later that evening, a polka and waltz dance. The dance was always held from 8 p.m. to midnight.

There were always very good officers elected to run the lodge, and good fellowship was there to be had.

We always had very good reporters to write to the Vestnik to let members know what was going on.

Later on, our lodge needed more room, so a place was selected to build a new buildin g . We are still very proud of the building; it has been kept up - to - date and new things have been done around the kitchen and bar areas.

The dance floor has always been the best; it is of a maple wood and is easy to dance on.

The Board of Trustees always is finding a way to improve our building.

Fort Worth has always tried to show its members and friends a good time and there are still polka dances held often.

Here, at our lodge, we have had many members who have out - lived their policy but have now passed away; we have many members in their 90 years still coming to the meetings which are held each second Sunday in the month. We must never forget what our older members have done for our lodge.

There are, in our area, four lodges now who cooperate together. The Christmas parties are held at a different lodge each year; this way maybe it will help bring a new member because we need to have things like this to bring our younger generation into the organization.

Lodge No. 92 has had a very good reporter for the past few years, but the 26th of November, Thanksgiving morning, I had a sad phone call saying our beloved Sister Helen Paprskar had just died. it was a shock to all of us and hard to believe such a wonderful person could come to meetings and be so jolly and never complain about her illness. Sister Helen had been a member for many years; we were together at the old lodge on Houston Street in 1930 or so.

Helen Paprskar and Mike were always at the dances when they first met, later were married (48 years).

They have three sons and three daughters and several grandchildren.

It does not seem that it has been so many years that my wife, Christine and I have had the pleasure of enjoying such good times with them.

Sister Helen Paprskar was a good reporter and she will be missed by all the members and friends. She was laid to rest November 28, 1987.

Before the last few meetings, she and two other members were selected to pick a "Fraternalist of the Year" at our lodge and it was an honor for me that they picked me. No one could have been more appreciative than I was for this honor; I thank all the members for being selected from Lodge No. 92.

We, here at Lodge No. 92, enjoy having other lodges visit our lodge and our Supreme Lodge officers and editor are always welcome any time.

I will close and I might say I will never be able to replace our deceased Sister Helen, but I just had to write to

express my feelings because our lodge has lost a good member. May she rest in peace!

I would like to wish all of you a Happy Holiday Season.

Betty Mueller stopped on her way home from China to visit her daddy and mother, Brother Joe and Sister Agnes Merlick. She was happy her daddy did recognize her. Sister Rose Steinman and I went to see him Wednesday. I'm sure he felt that we were there.

We extend our get well wishes to Brother Joe Gregory who just underwent an eye operation.

Sister Betty (Svitak) Jordan, her husband Herman and sons, Jerry and Terry, just arrived home from a week visiting the different islands in Hawaii.

Betty located her nephew, Jimmie Svitak and family in Honolulu and they had a great reunion after not seeing one another in 20 years.

Remember the Lodge 154 and Sokol Christmas Party on Thursday, December 17 at 7 p.m. Santa will be there. Sisters are asked to bring cookies for the social following.

No. 155, Austin Christmas Party Lodge

The SPJS Lodge 155 will hold their Christmas Party on Sunday, December 13 at 2 p.m. in Rosie's Tamale House No. 2, 6406 N. 1H 35 Suite No. 1100.

Take IH 35 and exit west on St. John's. After passing the bridge, turn left on access road off IH 35. Go about 21/2 blocks and you will see a white stucco building. It is located in Lincoln Court Square.

A Supreme Lodge officer of SPJST will be our guest and install the slate of officers for 1988.

Come enjoy a meal and fellowship with other members of SPJST. The last meeting and delicious meal was held November 8 at the home of Dr. Svatava Jakobson in the hill country on an enchanting winding road. Her quaint picturesque home is nestled among cedar trees and a lovely lawn. Deer are often seen grazing on the grass. Recently she had an unusal problem to remove a large buck that chose to die on her lawn.

Eleven of us braved the steady rain and cold weather as we drove from Austin to River Hill Road. Our hostess met us with an umbrella and provided each of us with jackets until we dried off. Raymond Prasatik, still recuperating from his thigh fracture, came with his walker assisted by several members.

In the absence of President Sharon Gavin, Vice President Mina Sponberg presided at the • meeting. Brother Charles Sponberg recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

A moment of silence was observed in tribute to our departed Brother Albert Heine who died recently.

Minutes, as well as reports of officers, and all communications were read by Raymond Prasatik.

The membership voted to send Christmas donations to Salvation Army, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I in Taylor, Austin State School and the Center for Battered Women as previously.

The Nominating Committee presented the slate of officers for 1988.

Election followed. Our new president will be Brother Clarence Boriski.

Dear Fellow Members: My second year as your Lodge 172 Vice President is coming to an end and 1 would like to say it has been a pleasure to serve; however, I will not be an officer next year but will still be available to serve, at least part of the time, in other capacities when needed.

Ever since I was .a boy old enough to hold a hoe, I have been committed to work but on January 31st, I am retiring from this commitment in order to enjoy the fruits of my years of labor. My wife and I are planning to use our new motorhome to see some of our beautiful country for a few years.

We will, however, be dropping by for a visit from time to time.

At our November 25 meeting, all business was attended to promptly and the meeting adjourned. It was decided not to have refreshments at this meeting; mostly everyone needed to return to their homes in preparation for Thanksgiving.

Our annual meeting and election of officers for the coming year will not be held on the 4th Wednesday of the month of December because that would make it too close to Christmas Day; instead, it will be held on DECEMBER 16 at 7:30 p.m. We hope to have as many of you as possible in attendance because this will be the night we elect new officers for 1988 and we would like this election to reflect the wishes of as many of our membership as possible. Please make it a point to be at this meeting.

Our Christmas Party will be held on December 19 beginning with "Happy Hour" at 5 p.m., dinner will be enjoyed at 6 p.m. with a dance following with music by the Texas Brew. The meat, coffee and tea will be furnished by your lodge, but we ask that you bring a covered dish for you and any guests you may want to bring.

We are always happy to see all our members and their guests, so please plan on being with us on this night.

The New Year's Eve dance tickets are now on sale at $12.50 per person.

The South Texas Bohemian Cowboys will be playing the music from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. They are a very good dance band and tickets are going fast so be sure and get your order in soon because we wouldn't want you to miss out on this one.

We would like to extend our sympathy to Mr. E.C. Baker in the recent loss of his wife, Jo. Our thoughts will be with you, E.C., in your sorrow.

Preston Freude of Yoakum, Texas passed away recently and we extend our sympathy to Tennie Walla for this loss.

Also, we have learned that Johnny and Esther Mikeska have recently lost a dear daughter - in - law, Ethel Brown, who recently passed away.

We send our best wishes to Joe and Estelle Hurtik as they celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary and all others who have an anniversary in December.

My husband, Ernest Alfred, and I had a wonderful trip to Charlottesville, Virginia in the month of November to visit our son, Dr. Raymond Dueser and his wife, Joan.

We had the pleasure of seeing a beautiful snow while we were there, but the outstanding part of the trip was to go to the eastern shore of Virginia to a big party. Our son, Raymond, of the Department of Environmental Science is the Principal Investigator of the Virginia Coast Reserve Long - Term Ecological Research Program. It will be a 5-year program. L.T.E.R. has rented a lovely, older farmhouse at Oyster, Virginia, to use as its laboratory, so the University of Virginia had the dedication of the Eastern Shore Headquarters on Saturday, November 14 with a lovely party, with about 300 people with the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Gerald L. Baliles, landing in the yard in a helicopter to give his dedication remarks. Everyone enjoyed seeing the huge, picturesque farm house all newly painted and redecorated. Everyone enjoyed the delicious eastern shore dinner and some really enjoyed the oysters; the crowd ate eleven bushels of oysters with all the other goodies. The weather was beautiful for the few days we spent there. We enjoyed seeing the Eastern Shore of Virginia for the first time, met a lot of the people living there and some of the people told me that their farm has been in the family over 200 years and they still live in the same house. The farmers grow a lot of vegetables in that area.

Our December meeting, will be held on Sunday, December 20 at 3 p.m., followed with a turkey dinner, with all the trimmings. The ladies are asked to bring a vegetable, salad or a dessert to go with the turkey. All the members are to bring a "toy" as an exchange of gifts. The members will get to play with the toy the rest of the day; then the toys will be given to a children's home or hospital. This should be a lot of fun!

Perhaps this is my last report; I won't be writing for 1988. 1 have certainly enjoyed this job for 2 years and wish to thank the editor, Mr. Sefcik and his lovely wife for being so prompt with all the reports and also the compliments I ha y ' received. So, now I send my best regards to everyone for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, 1988.

of the officers. Each member of our lodge is asked to bring a gift worth $5 for exchange with another member.

Members are also asked to bring a dessert and a salad for the meal that will follow the exchange of gifts. The lodge will provide the meat. All members are encouraged to come out and have some fun, share a few laughs, eat some great food, and help celebrate the wonderous birth of Jesus Christ.

I am happy to announce that the members of Lodge 187 approved plans to financially help local 4 - H Booster clubs. The lodge voted, unanimously at the November general meeting, to donate $200 to each of three local 4 - H Booster Clubs. The Booster Clubs selected by our lodge to receive the donation this year include Thrall, Hutto and Leander. The money will be used by the Booster Clubs to support the purchasing of show animals at local Livestock Shows.

Final plans are being made for this year New Year's Eve dance at Lodge 187. The Debonaires will be playing from 8 to 12. Notice: Reserved seating only. Tickets for the dance are now on sale at HEB in Round Rock. The total cost of each ticket is $13.50. Everyone is cordially invited to join us at Lodge 187 to help bring in the new year together.

By W.J. "Bill" Malina The year 1987 is rapidly coming to a close. The Thanksgiving holidays have come and gone. Many people celebrated Thanksgiving with a bounteous meal, while others were thankful just to have something to eat, and still others went hungry. In addition to the usual prayer of grace before a meal, many of us paused to give thanks for all the blessings we had enjoyed and experienced throughout this past year. But, did we really stop and reflect upon the events that touched our lives, our families, friends, community, state and nation during this past year? For many, 1987 was a trying year economically as well as spiritually and emotionally.

The following words were written many years ago: "We work hopefully, only because we believe that God is just, and the universe a harmony. And yet, so far as we can see the world is full of injustice and wrong, and dissonant with discord. But, for all that, our faith in God's wisdom and beneficence remains unshaken and immovable. If it did not, to what use would we work and struggle? We would lay down our arms and implements in despair." (The author of these words and the time in which they were written is unknown to this writer.) These words certainly describe the present world situation, things have not changed very much since those words were written. The words "We work hopefully" and "because we believe" seem to hold the key to what the author was tryin g to say.

Faith and belief are among the most powerful words in the English language, transcending even knowledge. Faith and belief compel people to venture beyond the realm of knowledge, to dare to strive to change the world and shape its destiny. Faith and belief are not limited to devout,

Faith and belief in the future propel the most outspoken agnostic to forge beyond the limits of knowledge in an effort to discover new truths, and alongside with the devoutly religious, work enthusiastically to make the world a better place in which to live. Belief without faith is passive.

In order to make it active there must be a dynamic faith in the future that pushes us into trying to change the course of our own lives.

Our forefathers had faith in the future and worked very hard to make their part of the world a better place to live in. Their's was not an idle hope, they believed in the future and made definitive plans to insure the continuation of their ideals. Today we are the beneficiaries and heirs of their plans and ambitions. The concepts they founded and the institutions they established stand as monuments to their faith in the future.

A large number of modern corporations run their businesses using a technique called "Management by Objectives." As they plan for the future, they make long range plans and set specific, attainable short term goals. Their plans and goals are periodically reviewed and modified, if necessary, to keep the company in harmony with changing technological and economic times. Some families, without realizing it, use the same principle and make both short term and long range plans by which they hope to fulfill their ambitions and, at the same time, provide for their well being.

All of us have ambitions, some of which have already been fulfilled, others have changed or just sort of fallen by the wayside and lie dormant waiting to be revived.

The young folks of today have ambitions that were once inconceivable. Only a few decades ago, it was not uncommon for a person to want to be a doctor, banker, lawyer or movie star. Today young people have ambitions of becoming astronauts, computer programmers, electronic technicians or famous TV personalities. In many cases, the complexities of our changing, modern world force us to change our ambitions. Whether we are young or old, ambitions must be changed into goals if we are to add new meaning to our very existence.

Soon after Christmas most of us will be making New Year resolutions, many of which will not be kept. If New Year resolutions are to be meaningful, they should be attainable and worthwhile. They should be designed to reinforce the plans and goals we already have, to give new purpose and meaning to those things which we have thus far only hoped for. It is true that some of our plans and ambitions will never be attained, but having definitive goals and plans give our lives a sense of purpose and a sense of direction.

No one knows what 1988 will bring.

We, like our forefathers, must have faith in the future and strive toward making the world a better place to live in, thereby enriching, not only our own lives, but also the lives of those around us.

For The Record Of War Veterans Of Czech Ancestry

Guidelines

A commemorative record is being collected for Texans of Czech ancestry who served in the wars fought since 1898. Herein are guidelines which you may follow in submission of data on a Czech veteran.

1. Type on a good grade of white paper, 81/2 x 11. Leave a 3/4" margin all around. Clean your keys and use a new ribbon. Single space or space and one half! Print if unable to type.

2. Paste or tape a photograph in the upper lefthand corner, about 2" by 3" in size. Be sure to write the veteran's name on the reverse side! The photo should be, preferably, taken in his military uniform. Any photo if military not available.

3. Include personal statistics for the Czech veteran, such as date of birth, place of birth, names of parents and education.

4. Include his serial number, place and date of enlistment, theater of operations, and any battles he fought in. Be sure to include a list of medals received, whether wounded or not, and date of discharge.

5. If the Czech war veteran is deceased, give date of death and details on his place of burial.

6. If the veteran is still living, give his present address.

7. A half page will be accepted for each veteran's write - up, so make your write - up brief and concise, including only basic details.

9. Remember, if you don't do it, your Czech war veteran's record may not get done! No one else will do it for you.

Letters From The Youth Lodge No. 9, Snook Christmas Program Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 9 planned their Christmas Program on December 6, 1987. First we were to have our December meeting at 2 p.m. After the meeting, we were to make decorations for the tree and practice our program. At 4 o'clock was the annual adult meeting. Then, at 5:15, a covered dish supper and everyone was asked to bring enough food for their family; friends were also invited. At 6 p.m., the youth club presented their program. Last, but not least, at 6:25 p.m., Santa was supposed to visit if we were good.

No. 39, Bryan Youth Club

After Saturday's practice, we will be delivering the canned goods and taking our Christmas craft to the hospital for children who are there on Christmas.

The District III has scheduled some fun for us, while we are bored at home during Christmas holidays. The District III youth leaders are planning fun at "Holiday in the Park at Six Flags." Afterwards, they want us to drive them crazy for a lock - in at Lodge No. 84, Dallas. So plan to have a night of fun and at Six Flags on Friday, December 18th.

The Mother Lodge No. 84 is planning a semi - formal dance on December 19, so wear your Christmas clothes and come out from 8:30 to 12:30 to dance to the music of the Polka Patriots. They are also taking early reservations for the New Year's Eve dance. Get your call in to Emil Petr, Wanda Petr, Evelyn Salac or Rose Scott.

The meeting was adjourned for us to work on our craft for the children who would be in the hospital at Christmas.

Dallas Lodge No. 84 YC November Meeting The November 23, 1987 meeting of Lodge No. 84 Youth Club was called to order at 7:47 p.m. by President Kern Andreason. Leslie Barnes led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. The register was read, and there were 28 members and 11 adults (4 of whom were leaders). I read the minutes from the last meeting.

Keri Andreason had asked our Head Youth Leader Bessie Petr to explain our Christmas Program. She read the story to us and parts were given to all members.

The Christmas Party is scheduled for December 13th. The doors will open at 5 p.m. A social hour will be from 5 to 6, with dinner serving at 6 p.m. As soon as everyone is finished with their meal, our Christmas Program will begin. Our Christmas theme is "Twas The Night Before Christmas." We hope everyone will plan to bring friends to the party, for an enjoyable program. All members are asked to bring a covered dish and dessert to the dinner.

Practices for the Christmas Program are scheduled for Tuesday night, December 1 at 7 p.m.; Monday night, December 7 at 7 p.m.; and final rehearsal on Saturday morning, December 12 at 10 a.m. Lunch will be provided before going over the program from start to finish. At each practice we voted for everyone to bring canned goods for the needy. So don't forget your can goods, because it is not on your flyer to remind you.

Alan Dale Wiederhold was born in Giddings, Texas on February 18, 1969 and was the son of James Clarence (J.C.) and Dorothy Meyer Wiederhold.

Alan was a May 1987 graduate of Lexingon High School of Lexington, Texas and was active in football and FFA. He had recently enrolled at Texas State Technical Institute (TSTI) in Waco, Texas.

Alan was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Alma Klagman Wiederhold and Willie Meyer, also by nephew, Robert Charles Wiederhold.

Serving as pallbearers were Mike Allen, J.D. Beltran, Conley Brown, Jeff Hayes, Randy Hayes and Allen Sanders.

[BILL] URBANEK, 72, of Route 1, Rowena, who died at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, 1987, in St. John's Hospital in San Angelo.

A rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rowena. A Funeral Mass was concelebrated by Rev. Richard Altenbaugh, cousins, Msgr. George and Msgr. Edward Rabroker and Msgr. Benedict Zientek at 2 p.m.

Tuesday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Altar boys were Joe Urbanek and Scott Matschek. Commentator was Larry Pelzel. Gift bearers were Greg and Debbie Halfmann. The music was provided by the St. Joseph's Choir. Burial was in the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, directed by Rains Seale Funeral Home of Ballinger.

Pallbearers were Charles Matschek, Jr., Kenneth Halfmann, Allen Weishuhn, Donnie Halfmann, John Halfmann and Roger Halfmann.

The fourth degree Knights of Columbus regalia were honor guards.

Bill Urbanek was born November 20, 1914 in Taylor, Texas. He married Elizabeth Halfmann, daughter of Otto J. and Minnie Halfmann on January 3, 1940 in Olfen, Texas. He was a farmer and rancher. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and

Wednesday, December 9, 1987—VESTNiK/9 was a third and fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus where he held many offices as past district director. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 49. He served on the SPJST State Bylaws Committee.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Adolph Urbanek.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Urbanek; daughters and sons - in law, Barbara and Bob Frenzel of San Angelo, Texas, Susan and Glenn Bohnenberger of Seguin; Beatrice Holubec of Seguin; one son and daughter - in - law, David and Linda Urbanek of Lowake; three sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Matschek, Mrs. Pauline Halfmann and Mrs. Della Halfmann of Ballinger; 13 grandchildren, Debbie and Greg Halfmann, Sherri and Jamie Lee, Kathy and Jeanne Frenzel, Kristie Holubec, Tanya, Joe and John Urbanek, Stacey Branham, Whitney and Mark Bohnenberger; 3 great grandchildren, Christopher, Latasha and Sara Halfmann.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple on behalf of the officers and entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of MARY NELL HIPP, who passed away October 22, 1987, in a Temple hospital at the age of 60 years.

Mrs. Hipp resided at 1408 East Central Avenue in Temple. She was born in Holland and lived most of her life in Bell County. She married Lewis Hipp on August 7, 1951.

Graveside services for Mrs. Hipp were Friday, at Hillcrest Cemetery at 12:00 p.m. in Temple with Reverend Ernest Thompson officiating. Hewett Funeral Home of Temple was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are her husband, Lewis Hipp of Temple; three stepdaughters, Carol Ann Clarke of Temple, Peggy Wood of Kermit and Mary Gordon of Metairie, Louisiana; two sisters, Thelma Brown of Belton and Roxie Beckworth of Temple; two brothers, Bobby Cockrum and Lee Cockrum, both of Killeen; and seven grandchildren.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple.

Memorial Mass was held at 2 p.m. on November 25 at St. Rita's Catholic Church, in Dallas.

Her husband, Albert Ammeter,

preceded her in death in 1976. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Rosie Cocek of West and attended West schools.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Ann Ammeter of Dallas; two sons, Dr. Leslie Ammeter of San Antonio and Geoffery Ammeter of Dallas; a sister, Virginia Pickel of Fair Oaks, California; a brother, Berriard Cocek of Carrollton; and a granddaughter, Aiessia Ammeter of San Antonio.

Sister Ammeter was a faithful member of SPJST Lodge No. 54 since 1968.

The Birthday Party which was held Friday, November 27 included Louis Vacek entertaining with the accordian and piano and singing "Happy Birthday." The Unique Shop provided the corsages. Betty Schulz brought a birthday cake. Volunteers Melva Hastings, Lydia Hortmon, Betty Schulz and Ida Gasch served cake, ice cream, punch and coffee to all. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

Thanks to all the denominations in this area that give services and communion, and to the volunteers who do services in the home for the residents in the month of November.

We were sorry to hear that Roy Lee Schroeder was hospitalized in Polly Ryan Hospital in Richmond and glad he has already returned.

We regret the death of Margaret Werner and Lila Quinney. Margaret and Lila will be missed by our staff and other residents.

Ima Todd has returned home in Rosenberg. We wish her the best of luck.

The fruit donated each month by AARP, the box of apples donated by the Presbyterian ladies and the fruit donated by the Needville FHA was greatly appreciated.

The residents want to thank everyone who donated cakes for the bake sale for the Residents' Activity Fund and a special thank you to Melva Hastings and Lydia Hortmon who volunteered their time to work at the bake sale.

Our sympathy goes out to LVN Mary Trevino for the loss of her mother, Herlinda DeLeon of Boling.

The Senior Citizen Social held at the Immanuel United Church of Christ was attended and enjoyed by Gladys Hix and Helen Valcik.

Every Monday morning, Olie Eixman, Elverna Graeber, Nona Eixman, Joy Hurta, and Ella Eisman come to have sing - a - long. The residents greatly appreciate the singing.

Every Thursday afternoon, Elton Tielke come to have sing - a - long.

Everyone enjoys the old - time songs.

Monday afternoon, November 2 and 23, Betty Seiler came from the library to show movies. The residents enjoyed the movies and popcorn.

Thursday morning, November 19, the First Assembly of God women from Rosenberg came to have a sing - a - long and visit with the residents. In the afternoon, Garland Huryta and Mary Goffinet, with the Fort Bend Humane Society, brought dogs for therapy for the residents.

Monday evening, November 23 Larry Ognoski, Fred Gerke and George Lolley provided music and singing for the residents. Everyone had a great time. Families and friends are invited to attend.

Thursday, November 26 was Thanksgiving Day. Everyone at the home enjoyed turkey and all the trimmings.

By Jenny Butler Staff Writer Taylor Daily Press Taylor SPJST Lodge 29 is one of the major social institutions in the area, providing services for everyone from young folks to the elderly.

Lots of non - members are familiar with the SPJST only through the weekly dances at the lodge hall on FM 619. But there's a lot more.

Members of the lodge can enroll their kids in the Youth Club, which offers a free summer camp, along with frequent trips see the Schlitterbahn, Six Flags, and Harlem Globetrotters' games.

"We Do Just about everything and anything," said Elaine Machu of Taylor, whose husband, Albin, was named one of the top two SPJST insurance salesmen in the state last year.

Older people are welcome in SPJST's Senior Citizens' Group, which meets one afternoon a month for a social with dominoes, cards and refreshments provided.

The lodge .enters a float in most local parades, and organizes the annual Mayfete, a celebration fashioned after old - time May Day festivities.

Besides the weekend dances, the lodge organizes fundraising projects such as domino tournaments, and rents the hall for weddings, meetings, and other gatherings.

"We have a lot of weddings," Mr. Machu said.

The 1934 - Vintage lodge is one of the few in the state that has two stories, and its size gives it an advantage. "We can hold three functions at a time" in the hall, Mr. Machu said.

But the dances still rank as the most popular activity. "They have a lot of battle dances on Sundays," Mr. Machu said. Battle dances get their name from the way that two bands play back - to - back, without a break.

Regular bands include Eddie Ray and the Polka Dots, a traditional Czech music group, and the Debonaires, which appeals to the "teenage crowd," Mrs. Machu said.

Both are popular, she said, but added that the Debonaires' dances often are "more lively" than the Polkt Dots because "they (the Dots) draw an older crowd."

From fundraising activities, percentage is donated to charities.

Some Of The donations made so far this year by the SPJST include $300 each to the Williamson County Child Welfare Board, the Williamson County Activity Center, and the Salvation Army; $500 each to the Taylor Volunteer Fire Department, the Thrall Volunteer Fire Department, and Johns Community Hospital Auxiliary; $117 to the University Czech Club; $150 to the Taylor Little League Association; $75 to the American Heart Association; $60 to the SPJST Scholarship Program; $25 to Thrall High School; and a color television and riding lawnmower to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home.

Mr. Machu said the rest home like the lodge hall, is open to non members.

Most of the local Officers are not of Czech origin, nor are about half of the SPJST's 2,000 local members, he added.

"I'm a German myself, and I've been a member for 20 - something years," said Mrs. Machu, who serves as financial secretary.

She said the Taylor SPJST currently carries $6,825,000 in insurance policies.

It Out: Families Have Fun At The SPJST Hall Czech

By Jay B. Lewis Fort Worth Star - Telegram TEMPLE, Texas (AP) --- It started out nearly 100 years ago as an insurance company and evolved into a lodge with strange - sounding initials that is the hub of social activity in dozens of Czech communities across Texas.

The SPJST still offers insurance, but it's pleasure, not business, that draws hundreds of people to each of its fraternal halls in 128 communities scattered across Texas.

"We think we've got a pretty good thing going, especially for a country place," said Dorothy Pechal of Seaton, east of Temple, whose husband, Jerry Pechal, is president of the local SPJST. The Dances, held every Saturday in Seaton draw 250 to 350 people --- in a tiny rural community with one store and one church and no population figure on the road signs, Mrs. Pechal said. Between dances are other socials where members get together for supper and dominoes or the traditional Czech card game Taroky.

Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas --- the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas --- was created to offer subscription insurance to Czech immigrants as they settled in towns from Galveston to the Rio Grande.

As an insurance company, it now claims $175 million worth of policies in force and assets of more than $40 million.

Which is all well and good, but for many of its 57,000 members, the SPJST is --- first, last and always --- a swell place to take the family on Saturday night.

Waco lodge President George Pauling, who calls himself ~ 'Czech by choice.''

"People Who Like to go partying --­ and i used to be a big partyer --- don't

like to have kids around. But we have them come in anywhere from still in their mothers' arms to old enough to start dancing."

Membership in the SPJST is not restricted to Czech Texans, and Pauling says an increasing number of Czechs - by - choice are joining. But the organization does take on the task of preserving Czech culture, sponsoring language classes, publishing the weekly newspaper Vestnik and maintaining a museum and library at the SPJST Supreme Lodge in Temple.

This last project was started as a labor of love by Otto Hanus, who collectedand catalogued from the late 1%0suntil his death in February at 86.

His work won him a citation by the Central Texas Museum Association.

Now run by Curator Thelma Bartosh, it includes 17,000 volumesof Czech language books, and a marvelous display of the Czech community's artifacts, ranging from the uniforms of its war heroes to the implements of its farmers to the instruments of its musicians.

The first batch of Czech immigrants landed in Galveston, and books about Texas --- notably those of Karl Anton Postun --- started circulating in Czechoslovakia,attracting many more settlers.

By The Time the SPJST was founded at La Grange in 1897, the Czechs had already made their mark on Texas. SPJST history records that the first settlement was established in 1848 at Cat Spring in the Austin County. Others followed through the 19th century.

In Texas, the Czechs gained a reputation as a sober, hardworking group who kept small, tightly cultivated farms. The museum in Temple is packed with samples of carefully oiled implements and a collection of nearly 100 miniature models of machinery the Czechs fabricated on the spot.

The Czechs also knew how to party.

Their pastries --- the best known of which is the kolache breakfast tart --­ eclipsed anything available in Texas, and their dances often bring the whole community into one swirling circle --­ whichexplainswhy someof the SPJST halls are octagonal, to facilitate circular dancing.

Ms. Bartosh shows the music collection in the museum. A mechanical music box that plays 10 different tunes off the same spindle.

Gramophones playing polkas off discs and spindles --- which have her swayingand tapping her feet in time within a couple of bars. Sheet music, accordians, dulcimers. A vertiablefolk music mother lode.

By 1910, when Austrian - Czech Anthony Lucas (nee Luchnich) brought in the first Texas oil well in what became the Spindletop Field, the Czechswere firmly in the mainstream.

Some, such as Jerry Baletka of Houston, didn't even wait for the United States to enter World War I. He wentoff and joined a CzechLegion of the French army, and left his uniform to the museum.

Members do have to be morally and physically sound.

The SPJST has contributed to endow a chair in Czech studies at the University of Texas and at Texas A&M University.

Forgotten Sources Dealing With The Life Of

Rev. Ernst Bergmann (E. Bergmann and the Czech Author Alois Jirásek

Seidler] Thanks to the efforts of American friends, I have recently had the opportunity to read several works dealing with Rev. Ernst Bergmann, who is sometimes called the Father of CzechImmigrants in Texas. The most important of these works appearsto be The Sa~a of Ernst Bergmann by Dorothy Klump and Albert Blaha. In addition to these works I have come across two additional sources of information on Bergmann. Although neither source reveals substantially new information, these may be of interest to historians dealing with the early history of Czech immigrants in Texas.

The first piece of information is a letter from John Barta Letovský, a prominent figure among the Czechsof North America. Writing from Iowa on October 8, 1856, Letovský addresses Alois Kares, a Czech entrepreneur in Bremen, Germany. This letter was published in 1970 by Czech historian František Kutnar and reads in part: "As far as Texas is concerned, the climateis so hot there that our people are completely unable to work and they frequently suffer from yellow fever. Last year several familiescame here from Texas. They told us about the sad condition of Czechs living there. They cursed Rev. Bergmann, who, through his letters, had enticed them to come to Texas. They blamed him for the loss of their health and their savings. ln short, Texas is a disaster for Czechs... " This subjective report shows that Bergmann described contemporary conditions in Texas too idealistically.

His view of Texas can be seen in a letter which was written to the Bohemian village of Stroužné and which is reprinted in Klump and Blaha's monograph. The experiences of early Czechs in Texas proved to be substantially different, however.

The second source of information on Bergmann is found in Czech literature. It may be argued that such literary sources do not have the documentary value that, for example, the correspondence from Letovský has. Yet this additional information should nevertheless be an interesting contribution to the story of Rev. Bergmann.

Ernst Bergmann is one of the charactersin the four - volumenovelU Nás (Among Us) written by the famous Czech Author Alois Jirásek. I think it willbe helpful to providesome background information here about this author. Jirásek, who was born in Hronov in 1851 and died in Prague in 1930, was the author of historical novels and one of the greatest Czech authors of the 19th and early 20th century. His works, which idealizethe virtues of democracy and liberty, provided the Czech people of his day with great inspiration. Jirásek's novels have engrossing plots with true - to life characters. Even today these novelscan serve as textbooks on Czech history. ln his novels Mezi Proudy [Between Streams), Proti Všem (Against All)

and Bratrstvo (Brotherhood), Jirásek described the development of Hussitism. The nation's crisis during the Counter Reformation of the 16th century is depicted in Temno [Darkness]. The Czech National Revival which followed is the background for F.L. Věk and U Nás (Among Us.), In these novels, Alois, Jirásek inspired the Czech people with stories from their glorious past. His works strengthened and encouraged the Czech people in the dark periods during both World Wars. Jirásek was such a popular figure among the Czechsthat many people wanted to see him president in 1918 when the Czechoslovak Republic was created.

Jirásek's novel U Nás takes place in Hronov, which is called "Padolf" in the novel, in the first half of the 19th century. U Nás depicts the development of the Czech National Revivalin this area. The protagonist of the novel is the Catholic priest, Havlovický,who is based on the actual person of Rev. Josef Regner, a local patriot and "national awakener". In the second volume of the novel we meet the Protestant Pastor Bergmann from the neighboring village of Stroužné. Stroužné is a small villagein Prussian Kladsko, near Padolí and the Czech border. Bergmann provided Jirásek with a model of an enlightened Protestant clergyman. Bergmann's character complements that of Rev. Havlovický and developments illustrate the evolution of Czech· national awareness in this area in the early 19th century.

To depict the life of Rev. Bergmann and his family, Jirásek borrowed from Bergmann's own work, "A Chronicle of the Protestant Evangelical Community of Stroužné ." Jirásek obtained this work about 1899 or 1900.

It is true that many parts of this chronicle are exaggerated and modified, but the author was trying to illustratethe fact that, despitelivingin a German environment, the village population had retained a Czech character. For the purpose of his novel, Jirasek transformed the figure of Bergmann to some degree, but the main events of the character's life correspond to the life of Rev. Bergmann. Bergmann is presented as "a sincere Czech and a good man, concerned about the poor, especially so during the cholera epidemic of 1832." ln the second volume of the novel Rev. Bergmann appears as a background character so that in the third and fourth volumes the reader is already familiar with Bergmann's life before his arrival in Stroužné in 1831 and through his departure for America in 1851. To suit the developmentof his novel, Jirásek places Bergmann's arrival in Stroužné a year earlier and his departure two Y$!ars later than actually happened. The author wished to time Bergmann's departure for America with the death of the main · character, Havlovický. According to the novel, Rev. Bergmann lived in Stroužné 20 years, but in actual life the term wasa year less, from 1830 - 1849.

In the novel we meet Rev. Bergmann's wife, a charming and energetic woman, a Czech from Prussian Kladsko, and his four daughters, Julie, Matylda, Otilka and Anežka. In Bergmann's chronicle he mentions only the name of one daughter, Julie. Since Jirásek knew the correct names of the daughters as well as their ages he must have had access to additional information about Bergmann, such as a diary or letters.

In this novel the Protestant Pastor Bergmann encounters the Catholic

priest from Padolí several tímes.

Despite the fact that Bergmann was formerly a Catholic, both men are able to communicate with one another. in the novel Havlovický is criticized by several other priests and parishioners for his contacts with Bergmann. As Bergmanntells something of his life in the novel, he emphasizes: "I've been fascinated with the world, .especially with the sea. I wanted to goto Sweden.

I've even dreamed of going to America.'' At another point Bergmanncontinues his reflections: "I sought after truth and I fell in love with philosophy. I've sought out men of wisdom. I wanted to get to the sea and Lord knows where else beyond and I've landed in this forsaken corner of the world inhabited by poor weavers."

Bergmann's role in the novelends in the last volume with the last days of the character Havlovický. The priest in Padolí receives a letter from Rev. Bergmann in which he bids farewell and announces that he is leaving to seek a better life in America.

Bergmannexplains that becauseof his poor financial condition he is unable to insure a decent future for his children. The letter in the novel is paraphrased from a note from the year 1849 which appears in Bergmann's chronicle, where he explains his reasons for emigrating.

Jirásek felt, however, that he could not end Bergmann's story in the novel without some explanation of his fate beyond the ocean. To. this end Jirásek employs literary license but probably bases Bergmann's fate on an authentic source. We find a letter written by Bergmann in 1852 to Stroužné in which he confides that his beginnings in America are very difficult, but that things are improving. He relates that he was stricken by a great tragedy during the voyage. His next - to youngest daughter died at sea.

According to Jirásek, the 14-year­ old Otilka died. Otilka was the most energetic and most beautiful, also the daughter most liked by Rev. Havlovický. In actuality it was daughters Anežka and Matylda who died, but not during the voyageand at a later time. Yet most Czech readers are not aware that eventhe conclusion of Bergmann's story in the novel is close to actual events. The reason for this is simple. No American essay on Bergmann has been published in Czech.

Rev. Bergmann is presented in Jirásek's novel in an overly idealized manner, as is also true for the main character Havlovický. Bergmann, in the novel, appears as an educated man who is interested in philosophy. Even minded and capable, he is lost in the small and foresaken village of Stroužné. Bergmann is a man who is more than half German by upbringing and education, as is evident by the poor Czech with which he wrote his · chronicle.

He is shown as compassionate towards the poor and suffering.

It would be an exaggeration to say that Bergmannis the main character in the novel U Nás. Jirásek's depiction of Bergmann's life and conditions in Stroužné are only one of a series of vignettes that Jirásek uses to portray that era of Czech history. Jirásek included information about Stroužné to illustrate the complicated religious situation of that day.

The person of Rev. Ernst Bergmann is a forgotten figure in Czech history.

Few readers of Jirásek's U Nás imagine that Bergmann was not a creation of the author's imagination but was in fact a real person.

Since 1980 laws regarding driving on an improved shoulder, rural interstate speed zones and the use of seatbelts have passed through the Texas Legislature.

The underlying benefit, Draper claims, is to reeducate drivers and polish their driving skills. We want to make people aware that they are not as good drivers as they thought they were.

Class participants receive an added bonus. According to state laws, defensive driving courses are acceptable for the dismissal of one traffic citation every two years.

Drivers can also receive a ten percent discount on their body injury and property damage and collision insurance for taking a defensive driving course every three years.

Draper believes drivers should take the course each time they renew their license. In fact, Draper has been

involved'''. 4n discussion regarding license renewal DDCs with Texas legislators for future action.

He stresses that people, even the best drivers, forget many of the things they were taught when they first learned how to drive. Even if you did everything just right to get your license, he says, you will forget things you know. The longer you go without updating your knowledge on driving, the worse driver you become.

Presently, the Texas Safety Association (TSA) supports 400 public and 700 private agencies which promote and provide defensive driving courses. In the 8 - hour session films and other visual aids are used to demonstrate the need to drive safely and defensively. They remind the drivers of the two second following rule of passing cars when approaching a hill, and of the need for a lengthy following distance. They teach the driver how to look out for the other guy and avoid possible accidents.

Another program, the National Corrective Training Institute (NCTI) focues its main defensive driving objective on behavior modification for traffic law offenders. While the program reviews traffic laws and driving habits, it uses round - table discussions on why people should not break the laws. Outside of the TSA, which teaches the National Safety Association's driving guidelines, Draper says there are 31 different approved programs. NCTI is one of them.

But does defensive driving really improve somebody's driving record?

Draper recalls a study from Lubbock which showed a 75 percent reduction in the number of traffic tickets for people who had taken the defensive driving course. While he admits that other variables might have had an affect on the tick:: reductions, he reiterates that the course makes a mark in the way people drive.

I can make you worry about your pocketbook, he states, but not for your life. You never think you are going to be in an accident. It's always somebody else. We are not teaching participants a new way to drive. We are telling them to polish their driving skills and knowledge. The bottomline is defensive driving makes you a safer driver.

BEFORE THE FEASTING BEGINS...

While Christmas holiday festivities are a time for family celebration, gaiety and feasts, the possibility of food poisoning can turn a pleasant get - together into an unhappy event.

Because of the handling of large amounts of food, the preparation of food in a busy kitchen, and the serving of buffet style meals, the possibility of food poisoning is increased during the holiday season.

According to Dr. C. David Morehead, director of the Division of Infectious Disease in the Department of Pediatrics at Scott and White Clinic and Hospital in Temple, Texas, "The nation's foremost food hazard is food poisoning due to bacteria. The initial symptoms may include diarrhea, vomiting and stomach cramps, and the major contributing factors to this illness are faulty food handling practices in the home or at food service establishments."

"The best way to deal with food „poisoning is to prevent it," noted Dr. Morehead, who is also Assistant Dean of the Texas A&M University College

of Medicine. He lists the following information which may be helpful: SHOPPING When shopping, meat, poultry, and dairy products should be picked up last to minimize the time they remain unrefrigerated in transport. Go directly home to refrigerate perishables. Freeze fresh meat and poultry immediately if you plan to keep them longer than 3 to 5 days.

Do not buy foods stored above the frostline in store freezers. These foods may have been partially thawed.

Do not buy eggs with cracked shells.

PREPARING Thawing of meat and poultry should be done in the refrigerator or in a microwave oven on the defrost cycle.

If it is necessary to hasten thawing, use a watertight wrapping under cold water. Keep water cold by changing it frequently. Cook promptly after thawing.

When preparing foods, be sure to keep hands, utensils, cutting boards and counter tops clean by using hot, soapy water.

Dispose of food from cans that leak or bulge.

While preparing or storing food, keep hands away from mouth, nose and hair. Do not use hands to mix foods. Avoid tasting from fingers or utensils you are cooking with.

Persons with infectious illnesses or skin infections should not prepare food.

If stuffing poultry, do so just prior to cooking it. To avoid undercooking, use a meat thermometer. Remove all stuffing after cooking. Stuffing left inside the poultry stays warm for a long period of time, allowing for easy and rapid bacteria growth.

PREPARING When serving buffets, keep servings small and replenish dishes as necessary from the refrigerator or stove. When guests have finished eating, put perishables into the refrigerator.

Foods left on the buffet table for more than 2 hours increase the risk of food poisoning.

Leftovers should be refrigerated promptly and thoroughly heated before serving.

Throw food out if you know it has been handled carelessly or left out more than 2 hours. Foods seldom change in taste, odor or appearance when unsafe to eat.

Dr. Morehead concluded with three simple rules which should be followed to increase the likelihood of food safety during the holidays. "Keep food hot (above 140 degrees F. or 60 degrees C.), keep food cold (below 40 degrees F. or 4 degrees C.) and keep food clean."

This is most important during the period, January 1 through April 15, 1988 when IRA Contributions can be applied to the previous year (1987), or the current year (1988). An IRA suited for you is currently paying 8%.

This change to properly report IRA Contributions is mandated by IRS to verify the transaction through IRS Form 5498 filed by SPJST and the Individual Income Tax Form 1040 Filing Return.
