If you're age 65 or older, suffer from diabetes or kidney trouble or have a chronic disease of the heart or lungs, be particularly wary of the flu bug. Because your resistance is lower than most people's, your risk of catching the illness -- and even dying -is higher. So get your annual flu shot now, advises the American Lung Association. That will give your body time to build up its immunity by the time flu season peaks in January through March. Health officials estimate that 80 percent of those in the high - risk population neglect to be vaccinated each year, and the result is 40,000 deaths, primarily among victims over age 65, during flu epidemics. Don't assume you're safe if you were vaccinated last year -- new strains of the flu appear with stubborn regularity. Should you get sick -- and you may, even, if you were vaccinated -- the prescription drug amantadine can often ease symptoms and speed recovery. *** Approximately 2 out of every 5 individuals need long - term care sometime -- either in a nursing home or at home. Such care can be enormously expensive; the average monthly cost for a nursing - home stay is more than

$2,000. What's worse, neither ordinary private health insurance nor medicare will pay for it. To fill this void, at least 70 carriers now offer insurance specifically designed to cover long - term care. That's four times the number with such policies only three years ago. Typically, the policies pay a set daily amount for care in a nursing home or the insured's private home. The amount paid varies widely. Some policies cover a quarter or less of the total cost of a nursing home stay. Others include restrictions that deny benefits under some conditions. And long - term - care protection isn't cheap. Premiums can cost several hundred dollars a month.

For those with substantial assets who can afford the premiums, long - term care coverage may be worth considering, even with its flaws.

Obviously, careful shopping is well advised. A couple of new booklets, both free, may be helpful. The Health Insurance Association of America provides "The Consumer's Guide to Long - Term Care Insurance." Write to: HIAA's Company Services, 1001 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20004. The American Association of Retired Persons offers "Before You Buy -- a Guide to Long - Term Care Insurance." The address is: D - 12893, AARP Fulfillment, 1909 K Street, N.W., Washingtn, D.C. 20049.

You try to retrieve a plugged - in hair dryer that has fallen into a sink or bathtub filled with water; you could get a fatal shock even if the appliance is switched off. Some 25 persons, mostly young children, die in this fashion each year hence the stern warnings that come with hair dryers. Under rules issued recently by Underwriters Laboratories, the nonprofit group that sets safety standards for the electrical industry, all hair dryers manufactured since October 1 are designed so that if they're immersed in water -- so long as they are turned off -- you won't get jolted. If you are in the market for a hair dryer, look for one wih the new feature. Retailers are permitted to sell existing stocks of applicances without the latest safeguard. Even if you buy one with the safety feature, remember: The new system only works when the switch is turned off; thus, manufacturers still advise against using any dryer near water. If a dryer falls into water with the switch on, safety feature or not, it's still a shock! *** One million new homes are built every year; perhaps one in five is exposed to radon, an invisible, odorless, radioactive gas that escapes naturally from soil. The, gas can seep into homes, where it increases the risk of lung cancer. But builders can take simple, inexpensive steps to help keep the gas out of houses as they are built.

The measures, some of which are routine building practices in many areas: Install a polyethylene vapor barrier before the basement slab is poured. Wrap flexible expansion - joint material, such as cork or felt, around the perimeter of the slab. Caulk liberally where pipes and wires penetrate the slab and where ductwork and pipes pierce any ceilings in the house. Seal the tops of sump pumps.

Install the basic components 'of a subslab ventilation system that can be used later, if necessary, to help remove radon that slips past other safeguards.

Excerpts From Minutes Of The Fourth Regular Quarterly Meeting Of The Supreme Lodge SPJST Held October 6, And October 21 & 22, 1987 At Home Office In Temple, Texas The meeting was called to order at 3 p.m. with all Supreme Lodge members present: Howard B. Leshikar, Pres.

Leonard D. Mikeska, Sec. - Treas.

Jerry Mikulas, Fin. Sec. Sidney Kacir, Legal Advisor Ben Trcalek - Dist. I (Oct. 6) Andrew Vavra - Dist. I (October 21/22) Willie E. Kohutek - II Cyrill Pokladnik - III, Chairman of the Board Stanley Broz - IV Jerry Prochazka - V Matt S. Vanek - VI, Vice Chairman of the Board Thelma Hrncir - VII Missions and Goals Committee -A report from the committee was distributed and reviewed by the Board.

The recommendations for missions, goals, and objectives were discussed and further consideration was deferred until later during the meeting.

Recess for the day was taken at 6:15 p.m. On the morning of October 7, 1987 it was learned that District I Director Ben Trcalek passed away.

The Supreme Lodge meeting was postponed until October 21, 1987.

The meeting was called back to order at 1 p.m., October 21, 1987.

Andrew Vavra, who had assumed the position of Director of District I, was present as were all other Supreme Lodge members.

Past President Nick Morris visited the meeting and extended his regards to the Board members.

Student Loans - Report was heard from the Fraternal Activities Committee on the feasibility of a student loan program.

It was decided that further research be made into the need for a student loan program by the Fraternal Activities Committee. It was also suggested that the committee look into the possibility of offering a student information or referral service with emphasis on information on available scholarships.

Plans of Insurance - There was a review of the new Twenty Pay Life Plan with a $2,000 minimum. After review, the new Plan of Insurance was approved.

CEFT Brochure - The plan for distribution of CEFT Czech Chair brochure with billing notices was approved.

Lodge Liability - There was a review of what has been done to assist lodges in developing a liability package for local lodges. The problems and possible solutions were discussed. It was agreed that each director continue to review the need for general and liquor liability with the lodges within their districts.

Recess for the day was taken at 6:15 p.m. until 8 a.m., October 22, 1987.

Missions and Goals Committee Chairman of the Board Pokladnik, with approval of the Board,appointed Director Vanek to, fill the vacancy on the Missions and Goals Committee.

Resolution of Respect To Ben F. Trcalek -A resolution of respect was unanimously adopted.

Direct Bill - Report was made on the outstanding progress in placing lodges on direct bill. It was estimated that by convention time, 85 percent of our membership should be on direct bill.

Committee Meeting -The Products Committee, Fraternal Activities Committee and Financial Planning Committee then met to formulate recommendations on matters within their areas of responsibility.

Tax Suits/Bankruptcies/Foreclosures Report was made on status of bankruptcies and tax suits of borrowers and two foreclosures in process.

MINUTES - The minutes of the July 13 - 15, 1987 Supreme Lodge meeting were considered and the minutes were accepted as presented.

REPORTS - The Supreme Lodge Officers' reports were acknowledged on motion duly adopted. The reports will be placed of record in Exhibits Volume 6.

OLD BUSINESS Convention Plans - Consideration was given to plans for the convention schedule and activities. The Fraternal Activities Committee presented its recommendations which were discussed and agreed upon as amended. Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska was chosen to coordinate the arrangements with the Convention Center. The Supreme Lodge Officers were to meet and assign tasks to the Supreme Lodge members and staff.

Real Estate Owned - Report was made on efforts to sell foreclosed property. Authorization was granted for real estate listings and procedures to be followed.

An alternative approach of trying to generate interest in the Longview property and reorganizing the lodge was considered at length and a motion was adopted to authorize Director Pokladnik, President Leshikar, and Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska to pursue the possibility of reorganizing the lodge with the plan of returning control to the local group.

Scholarships - There was discussion on a proposition of transferring seven of the scholarships from our present program, one per district, to be awarded through our youth program.

A motion was made to refer the idea to the Fraternal Committee for consideration.

WFLA Convention - Director Pokladnik, who had been chosen to represent the SPJST at the convention, gave a report on his observations at the convention.

NEW BUSINESS Youth Department - SYD Claudette Reese was invited to the meeting and she presented a report of youth activities.

Recess for lunch was taken at 11:45 a.m.

On motion duly passed, a T - Shirt design contest was authorized. Motion carried.

A motion was adopted authorizing the sum of, up to $400 to have the Beseda tape corrected.

Request to send the SYD and 2 representatives per district to LRL in Brownwood was approved.

Authorization was granted for the Youth Leaders' Retreat at Lone Star in La Grange on March 25 - 27, 1988.

Youth Program At Convention - It was decided that the President and the SYD be charged with the responsibility of selecting the best available acts from our SPJST Youth to perform a - one hour program at the convention.

There was Lodge Meetings discussion concerning requests from lodges who decided to meet quarterly instead of monthly. Because it was felt that quarterly lodge meetings are not in the best interest of the. Society and it, was felt that monthly meetings were preferred, a motion was adopted to seta policy that requests for quarterly) meetings would not be approved.

Kolak Bakeoff - There was discussion of having a Kolde 13akeoff. A state bakeoff was suggested and discussed.

A motion was adopted to encourage Czech Pastry Bakeoff at the Spring 1988 district meetings. A $25 prize was authorized for each district.

1987 - 88 Deer Contest - Two $50 prizes were authorized for a contest for the widest set and most points for a whitetail deer shot in Texas by an SPJST member during the current season. Verification by a public official. Complete rules were to be formulated to implement the contest.

Volleyball - The Fraternal Activities Committee was assigned the task of setting up rules for an SPJST Volleyball Tournament for further consideration.

Blood Testing - It was agreed in order to get the best reinsurance rates, blood tests will be required for life insurance applications of $25,000 or more.

New EDP Equipment -Purchase of two model #5251 CRTs was authorized.

Delinquent Loans - Action on loans delinquent three or more months was approved motion carried.

Minutes of Officers' Meetings and Investments - The minutes of Supreme Lodge Officers' meetings and investments as listed in the Secretary Treasurer's report were approved.

Loan Application - The interest rates on real estate loans were set.

Annuity/Universal Life Rates -After due consideration, the rates were left unchanged and extended to January 31, 1988 as follows: (1) Annuity Rate - 8 percent annualized (2) Universal Life Rate - 9 percent annualized Lodge Loans - A letter was read from an SPJST Lodge requesting reduction of the interest rate on their lodge building loan. After discussion it was agreed to do the following: Notify those lodges with lodge building loans bearing rates greater than 10 percent that their interest would be calculated at 10 percent until further notice. Payments were to be adjusted accordingly, if so requested.

Refund - Action on the refund to lodges and members' refund would be handled by mail poll of Supreme Lodge members.

Discount A&B CERTS - The usual discount of 25 percent on premiums was granted to all, members in Class "A" and "B" whose certificates were in force 35 years or more and who have attained the age of 70 or more, plus an additional 25 percent discount when they attain the age of 75.

Legislative Liaison -- There was a report on developments and problems of securing a legislative liaison to assist the Texas based fraternal coinpanies.

Missions and Goals Committee - It was suggested that the .Missions and Goals Committee meet prior to the January Supreme Lodge meeting to review its report and present its recommendation for consideration in the January Supreme Lodge meeting.

Management Committee - After discussion, a new subcommittee was established to be headed by Financial Secretary Mikulas. The committee would be named the Management Committee.

New committees were designated as follows: 1. Products Committee Bernard M. Gebela, Chairman Willie E. Kohutek Stanley Broz 2. Fraternal Activities Committee Howard Leshikar, Chairman Thelma Hrncir Andrew Vavra 3. Investing Planning Committee Leonard D. Mikeska, Chairman Jerry Prochazka Matt Vanek 4. Management Committee Jerry Mikulas, Chairman Sidney Kacir Sid Pokladnik DIRECTORS - It was decided that each director be authorized to come to the Home Office for two days annually. to observe the operation.

The next Supreme Lodge meeting was set to begin on January 11, 1988 at 9 a.m.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:33 p.m.

New members joining our lodge are Dominic Polasek, William Thomas Stovall and Shayne Allen Stovall.

We had one visitor, Mrs. Minnie Kaatz, at our meeting. Come back again.

Youth Leader Donna Vanecek reported 21 members attending their meeting. They will make cookies to take to the rest home and, for their social, they will go shopping at the Mall.

Next, we had election of officers.

All officers were elected by acclamation. Our next meeting will be Sunday, December 6 starting at 3 p.m. with a short meeting and Christmas Party.

The membership voted to contribute $100 to Memorial Hospital of El Campo and $200 to Wharton Matagorda County Child Protective Services (Department of Human Resources).

The following members qualifed and were elected as delegates to XXV Convention to be held in Temple, Texas on June 19 - 23, 1988: Rita Vanek, Frankie Vanek, Leona Macha, Dora Lee Kopecky, Landis Kopecky, Bennie Reck and James Bacak. The alternate delegates elected were Madeline Shimek, Floyd Shimek and Mary Ann Karasek .

President Rita Vanek presented Landis "Dutch" Kopecky with an Appreciation Award; four (4) years of perfect attendance at regular monthly meetings, district meetings, socials, bingo worker (weekly), and bar worker. The members gave "Dutch" a standing ovation for his dedication to our lodge.

District VI Director Matt Vanek installed the new officers -accompanying Matt was his wife, Henrietta. Come back again, Matt and Henrietta; we always enjoy your visits to our lodge functions.

The October meeting was called to order by President Ken Vrla. The Pledge of Allegiance was said and the minutes were read from the previous meeting.

During the meeting, the Nominating Committee made its recommendations for the 1988 officers and they were accepted by the membership. The 1988 officers are: President - Helen Oates Vice Pres. - George Stark Secretary - Martha Vrla Treasurer - Bob Oates Beseda Director - Helen Vrla A new position was also created for the new year; Helen Oates was voted as assistant Beseda director.

The lodge also elected convention delegates. They are Arnold Vrla, Helen Oates and Helen Jo Vrla. The alternates chosen are Bob Oates, George Stark and Alden Smith.

The Texas Czech Beseda Dancers will be performing at Christmas at Old Fort Concho in San Angelo on December 5th and 6th. We look forward to participating this year again. We always receive a very warm welcome from the people of San Angelo.

The dancers also recently performed for the anniversary celebration of KJT No. 111 on November 22nd. It was a very enjoyable celebration.

Our next regular meeting on December 14 will be our lodge Christmas Party. All members are invited to attend. Turkey and dressing will be provided by the lodge and everyone is asked to bring a salad, vegetable or dessert. We will also be exchanging gifts.

November 15, 1987 Meeting The monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 133 was called to order by President Anthony Trilicek. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was held for deceased members. There were 62 members and 2 guests present.

The secretary read the minutes of the last meeting. They were approved as read. The treasurer then gave her report. The treasurer was reminded that, as of January 1, 1988, there would not be a mortuary fund due to direct billing.

Brother Emil Matula reported on the Publication Committee. The Progress Committee met and opposed an effort to cut the Vestnik printing to bimonthly. During the SPJST Convention in June, a topic to be discussed will be increasing the Vestnik four pages. Brother Dominic Netek suggested that articles about our country be included in this section.

There were no reports from the English and Czech reporters. Sister Marcella Kleprlik announced the anniversaries -- Mr. and Mrs. James I. Kostelnik celebrated their 65th anniversary while Mr. and Mrs. Joe Stryk celebrated their 40th

anniversary. Sister Kleprlik also mentioned that Mr. and Mrs. August Blanar would be honored at the December meeting on their 65th anniversary. This is due to the fact that Sister Blanar was not able to attend the November meeting due to an injury.

Sister Stella Mares was in St. Luke's Hospital recuperating from a heart attack. Brother Albin Popp remained on the sick list. Sister Helen Pendleton is recuperating at the Fort Sam Hospital.

The newest Lodge 133 member, Valerie Marie Popp, was welcomed.

Approval on her membership was made by Brother Don Netek and Sisters Viola Kurtz and Viola Fajkus.

Old Business: The Fund - Raising Committee consisting of Brothers Don Netek, Joe Spacek and Emil Matula as well as Sisters Viola Kurtz and Alma Trilicek decided to eliminate the treasurer's office. The secretary would then also assume the duties of the treasurer and be paid $200 a year extra. The motion was made by Viola Fajkus and seconded by Charlie Kurtz.

All compensation for scrapbook chairman, flag bearer, reporters and auditors would cease as of January 1, 1988. Volunteers would be accepted for these positions. Corsages would only be given on the 25th, 50th and 75th wedding anniversaries. The motion to accept these changes were made by Sister Viola Fajkus and seconded by Brother Joe Styrk.

In regards to the Christmas dinner, Brother Netek said the lodge would provide the meat and bread. Members were asked to bring vegetable dishes and pastries. Members would be free.

Guests would be $2 for adults and $1 for children.

New Business: The Nominating, Committee consisting of Viola Kurtz, Grace Rohan and Don Netek then presented their candidates for election.

They were: President - Anthony Trilicek Vice Pres. - Bill Mares Secretary/Treas. - Jarolyn Popp Nominations from the floor were asked for. The nominees were accepted. The election was chaired by Brother Emil Matula.

Members were then selected as delegates to the convention to be held in Temple, Texas during the summer.

Brother Don Netek, seconded by Brother Charlie Kurtz made the motion to _accept Anthony Trilicek and Viola Kurtz as delegates by

acclamation. The motion carried.

Alternates selected were Brother Emil Rohan and Sister Alma Trilicek.

Sister Marcella Kleprlik then told members about a new service for members 65 and older called Care Health Services. She suggested that members needing help call 349 - 9999 and take advantage of the service.

It was recommended by Brother Dominic Netek and Sister Viola Kurtz that any Certificates of Deposit maturing at this time be renewed for not more than one year in hopes that interest rates will rise.

Birthday members were then honored. They were Viola Fajkus, Adolph Popp, Agnes Popp, Jarolyn Popp and Charlie Kurtz. Brother Charlie Kutil also asked members to remember his mother Frances Kutil who was 90 years old on November 17th.

Sister Viola Kurtz then showed the quilt she was donating for the December sale. Sister Viola Fajkus showed the afghan she was donating.

Split the Pot was won by Gertrude Pavliska and Alfred Kalmus.

Attendance prizes were won by James Kostelnik - 1st, Joe Stryk - 2nd, Evelyn Matula - 3rd, and Anthony Trilicek 4th.

With no more business to discuss, Brother Don Netek seconded by Charlie Kurtz made a motion to adjourn. Members then enjoyed refreshments and a games party.

Wednesday, December 2, 1987—VESTNIK/7 The secretary read an acknowledgement from the family of Charles Murray for the lodge's sympathy sent to them on the death of their loved_ one.

Keith Kieschnick gave the youth club report. The youth will be sponsoring a project with prizes to be given away at our Christmas Party on December 18th. The tickets are being sold by our youth club members.

Sick Committee Report: Jeffrey Cernoch had knee surgery due to a football injury, but is doing well now.

All committee reports were given.

Rosie Schilhab read the changes that were recommended to the Rules & Regulations Committee for 1988.

These will be voted on in the next annual meeting to be held Sunday, December 13 at 2 p.m.

This will be an important meeting.

We will have election of officers, board of trustee members and also we will elect 4 delegates and 4 alternate delegates to go to the 1988 Convention More

in Temple. We need all our members to come to this important meeting and voice their opinions.

Capsule drawing for $20 prize went unclaimed due to the absence of Cheryl Schilhab; the next month's prize goet to $30. Youngest member under 16 years who had not already won -- none present, therefore the $5 attendance prize went to Bertin Doskocil, 73 - year - old and oldest member present. Congratulations and keep on attending our meetings. Four door prizes went to Elizabeth Hermis, Dennis Hermis, Eugene Veselka and Adela Stein.

The meeting adjourned at 2:55 p.m.

A delicious meal and refreshments were served to all who were present.

Dear Members and Friends On November 10 there were 75 of us who got together to eat out at the Brown Derby Restaurant. We were seated at 3 long tables, the service was good and everybody really enjoyed it.

Since our last meeting, Tuna Meislohn had an accident and broke her leg in 3 places; we hope she has a speedy recovery and also we hope everyone else is well.

November birthdays were for Flora Koci, Merel Kovar, Ida Mayer, Lillie McMillen, Agnes Merlick, Victoria Murphy and Claude Marchioni. We hope it was a "Happy Birthday" for all of you.

For our next meeting on Tuesday, December 8, the Circle will furnish the meat which will be ham. Betty Billington is taking care of the ham and rest of the ladies are to bring a vegetable, salad or dessert; something to complement the ham.

For those who plan to participate in the gift exchange, bring a $3 gift. Let's hope all of you do, because it really is a lot of fun.

We extend our get well wishes to Brother Joe Gregory who just underwent an eye operation.

Sister Betty (Svitak) Jordan, her husband Herman and sons, Jerry and Terry, just arrived home from a week visiting the different islands in Hawaii.

Betty located her nephew, Jimmie Svitak and family in Honolulu and they had a great reunion after not seeing one another in 20 years.

Lodge No. 186, Caldwell On November 5, 1987 we held our regular meeting for SPJST Lodge No. 186.

Leisure Lodge Nursing Home was invited to attend to accept 200 bingo cards that our lodge donated to the residents there for their weekly bingo games. Activity Coordinator Ruth Johnson represented Leisure Lodge and accepted the bingo cards from our lodge President O.T. Wine.

Our next guest was Ben Frank Trcalek who represented the Cooks Point Fire Department and accepted a check in the amount of $350.

From The State Youth Director Over the centuries, Christmas and carols became inseparable. The first known Christmas carols were not written in English until 12 centuries after the birth of Christ. The first printed collection of carols was not published until 1521.

St. Francis of Assisi started the modern custom of caroling in Italy in the 13th century. It soon spread over Europe. Today, no Christmas service is complete without singing the Christmas songs.

The word "carol" comes from the Middle - English "carolen," meaning "to sing joyously." The earliest English carols were round dances with recurrent refrains.

The great age of the English Christmas carol was the 15th century.

Then came the Reformation, and the growth of Puritanism and carols became much more gloomier. By 1647, the Puritan Parliament had abolished the observance of Christmas. Carols were forbidden.

Many of the early carols were not recovered until the 19th century. If carols and Christmas are inseparable, organs and Christmas are even more so. Some historians say that the organ was used in the Western church from as early as the 6th century.

Music is, after all, one of the greatest tributes to Christmas.

35 Youth Club Meeting

Our meeting was held on November 8 at 2 p.m., with 11 members and 4 adults present.

Old business discussed was selling tickets on a Christmas ceramic centerpiece; anyone interested just ask a youth member and we will be glad to sell you some tickets. The District III meeting was also mentioned because they decided to get together. District III youth members are meeting at Six Flags on Friday, December 18 and then going over to Lodge No. 84 afterwards for a lock - in. We're looking forward to seeing everyone and don't forget your sleeping bag, pillow and gift.

We're also making a food basket for Christmas so don't forget your canned goods next month. We have planned 2 cake walks; one on November 28th and the other on December 5th, so come on out to support the youth club, especially on December 5th.

Plans for our Christmas program are underway. We will be doing a play. again this year and it will be on December 13th. See you then!

Dear Readers, The holiday season is slowly creeping upon us once again, and Lodge No. 39 Youth Club has a full calendar. again. Our charity projects for the rest of the year will be collecting food for the needy for Thanksgiving and for Christmas and also collecting aluminum cans to recycle to "Save Battleship Texas," money earned from recycling these cans will be donated to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to help pay for the restoration costs.

Our social for the month of November was a trip to the movies to see "Teen Wolf Two," which was enjoyed by all.

In December we will be going to the annual Bryan - College Station Holiday Parade and, hopefully, maybe we can get in some caroling, also.

December 19 will be the date of our Christmas Party at the hall with the mother lodge, we will have a short program, goodie bags, dinner, and a dance at night. Don't forget to put this date on your calendar and come on out

to help us celebrate this holiday season.

Lodge 13 YC Holds Sleepover On Saturday, November 7, Lodge 13, Dime Box held their regular monthly meeting and a sleepover. The meeting began at 7 p.m. It was called to order by Vice President Susan Spacek, and Aaron Hervey led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Due to the absence of the secretary, no report was given from last month's meeting. Treasurer Scott Whitsel gave his report.

Under old business, we discussed Christmas caroling. We will all go caroling in Dime Box on Wednesday, December 23rd. We are to meet at the hall at 6 p.m., and bring your flashlight. After caroling, we will have refreshments.

Under new business, we decided to send some flowers to Mr. Claude Flippin who is in the hospital.

Everyone is reminded that we will have a meeting and Christmas Party on Sunday, December 20 at 1 p.m.

After the meeting was adjourned, everyone ate supper. We went on a night hike, watched movies, and played games. Everyone had a great time.

Dear Vestnik Readers, On October 24, the members of Lodge No. 88 Youth Club had a Halloween Party from 2 to 6 p.m.

The highlights of the day were a dance, contests, and a ghost storytelling time. The winners of the contests were balloon stomp -- Justin Furstenfeld, costume contest (ages 6 to 9) -- Nicholas Havermann, (10 - 12) -Sonny Portes, (13 and up) -- Brian Havermann and congratulations to Team No. 1 for winning in the pass the - lifesaver's game and Team No. 3 in the gossip - line game. We want to thank everyone who worked so hard to put it together, namely, Youth Leader Laura Mabry, Crystal Wallace, Darlene Migl and Marlene Migl (LITs).

Then, on November 8, we had our monthly social at Fame city from 2 to 6 p.m. We purchased the Fun Saver passes which are enjoyed by everyone.

Our next social, on December 14, will be around 7:30 p.m. The youth are going to present a play: "The Night Before Christmas."

Dear Readers, On Thursday, November 12, at 7 p.m., we held our monthly meeting and bake sale.

After the meeting was opened, we welcomed new member Michelle Linney who is 15 years old. Then, we had the committee reports. Marlene Migl (scrapbook) requested everyone's'. help by donating pictures to the scrapbook. Karl Pflughaupt (fund raising) announced the plan of a "special" fund - raiser to come.

Crystal Wallace (social) reported to everyone that the December social on December 14 will be a play "The Night Before Christmas," and she said that parts are going to be assigned after the meeting.

Other business was reported by Youth Leader Laura Mabry. In December we are going to the Golden Age Nursing Home to sing Christmas carols and get everyone in the holiday spirit. Also, we are to bring a wrapped present for either a man or woman to the next meeting to take to the nursing home.

It was requested that we keep bringing food and clothing since it is the holiday season.

From around 6 to 9 p.m., we had our bake sale going on. It wasn't a very great turnout.

In December everyone has been requested to bring something "Christmasy" for the bake sale.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Texaska Orlice No. 13, Dime Box, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our most sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our dear departed lodge sister OLGA MARGARET SUKUP, of Georgetown who died Sunday, August 9, 1987, at Round Rock Community Hospital.

Services were at 10 a.m. at St. Helen's Catholic Church in Georgetown with Monsignor George Tydlacka and the Reverend Isidore Rosycki officiating. Burial was at IOOF Cemetery under the direction of the Davis Funeral Home.

Olga Sukup was born November 16, 1929 in Dime Box and was the daughter of Frank and Mary Tydlacka (both deceased). She married Pete P. Sukup in 1959 and they owned and operated Robert's Printing Company in Georgetown for 25 years.

Survivors include her husband, Pete P. Sukup of Georgetown; son, Kevin Paul Sukup of Georgetown; daughter, Joan Marie Sukup also of Georgetown; several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Glen Tydlacka, Frank Tydlacka, Jr., Bruce Cowan, Dennis Mikulin, James Spacek, Arnold Tydlacka, Brian Spacek and Dennis Mikulin, Jr. Memorials may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 186, Caldwell, on behalf of our membership, express our sincere sympathy to the surviving family of our departed brother J.D. WATSON, who died suddenly Sunday, August 2, 1987, in Burleson County Hospital.

Funeral services for Japser Dee (J.D.) Watson, age 70, of Route 1, Caldwell, Texas were held at 10 a.m.

Tuesday, August 4 in the First Baptist Church in Caldwell with the Pastor Rev. Phil Lovelace officiating.

Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery.

He was born January 22, 1917 in the Hogg Community of Burleson County to the late William Wright Watson and Hattie Wolz Watson.

A lifelong resident of Burleson County, he was a well - known and respected rancher. He was an active and faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Caldwell. He served as a deacon in the church. He was active in the community, member of ASC and all community activities. He was married to Mary E. Cross on October 7, 1939, in Johnson County.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Watson of Caldwell; one son,

Jay Don Watson of .Bryan; one daughter, DeAnn Keilberg of Giddings; two grandchildren and two sisters, Lula Mae Dusek of Caldwell and Maurine Payton of Bellville.

Serving as pallbearers were Jim Cross, Roger A. Broesche, Wes Payton, Wendell Payton, Anthony Schroeder and David Cunnington.

Honorary pallbearers were Deacons of the First Baptist Church of Caldwell.

Funeral Mass for Rosie Kubelka, age 72, of Dallas was held at 4 p.m.

Friday, September 4, in St. Mary's Catholic Church with Monsignor Emilian Foltyn, celebrant. Burial was in St. Mary's Church Cemetery.

She was born October 13, 1915 in Burleson County, the daughter of Frank B. and Mary Vacek Kubelka.

She grew up in the Red Hollow Community in Burleson County and moved to Dallas in 1936. She had her own printing shop in her home, specializing in lettering and emblems.

She was confirmed and baptised in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Caldwell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and a sister.

Survivors include one brother, Frank Kubelka of Caldwell and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for rother Blazek were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 17 at the Shiloh Baptist Church near Franklin. The Reverends Curtis Archer, B.C. Watson of Shiloh and Clifton Barnett of Wheelock officiated. Burial was in the Wheelock Cemetery. other Blazek, born in the Edge Community, had lived in the Wheelock area in Robertson County most of his life. He was a farmer and rancher and a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Nedbalek Blazek of Wheelock; a son, Henry E. "Buckier" Blazek III of Houston; a daughter, Jo Ann Raney of Dallas; two brothers, George T. Blazek of Bryan and Fred Blazek of Wheelock; two sisters, Frances Blazek of Bryan and Mrs. Sam McDonald, Sr.

of Navasota; two grandchildren and a number of great - nieces and great nephews. Nancy Blazek of Houston is his daughter - in - law and Cleburne Raney of Dallas is his son - in - law.

Expression Of Sympathy The officers and members of Smetana Lodge No. 39, Bryan wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved Severa family of our departed lodge sister JULIA HOLIK SEVERA, age 100, of 1401 Memorial Drive in Bryan, who died early Friday morning in a local nursing home.

A funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan with the Rev. Norman J. Sirnic officiating. Burial was in Smetana Cemetery.

Mrs. Severa, a native of Brazos County / was a homemaker and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 39 in Smetana and Faith United Church of Christ in Bryan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fritz Severa on March 14, 1977.

Survivors include a son. Joe Severa of the Rye Community, three daughters, Emily Janosek and Victoria Brandt, both of Corpus Christi and Albina Yeager of College Station; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a nephew and several nieces. Fred Janosek and Fred Brandt, both of Corpus Christi, and William Yeager of College Station are her sons - in - law.

Sister Julia Severa attained age 96 on May 15, 1983 and was the 74th person in the history in the SPJST to outlive her SPJST life insurance policy.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee, on behalf of our membership of Lodge No. 33, Bleiblerville, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother BENJAMIN SCHOVAJSA, who passed away on October 24, 1987 in the Sweet Briar Nursing Home of Bellville at the age of 76 years.

Brother Schovajsa was born on June 29, 1911. He was the son of Frank and Frances Schovajsa and had lived in the Nelsonville - Bleiblerville area all his life as a farmer and rancher.

He was a member of Nelsonville Brethren Church, and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 33, Bleiblerville.

Funeral services were held on October 26 at the Nelsonville Brethren Church with Rev. Albert Michalik officiating. Burial was in National Cemetery near Nelsonville.

Pallbearers were Willie, Darwin and Raymond Schovajsa, Dalton and Leroy Pick and Jerry Hoff.

Survivors include a daughter and son - in - law, Jeanette and Vernon Gaskarnp of Brenham; grandsons, Brian and Bruce Gaskamp of

Features Adventure With A Top Gun

By Ann Druen Last year, the movie "Top Gun" exploded on the nation's movie screens. It told the story of hot - shot Air Force pilots competing to be the best pilot in the air --- the "Top Gun." G.I. Joe Magazine talked to an Air Force instructor pilot, Lt. Brent Hrncir (pronounced Hern - sir), to see if life in the Air Force is like the movie.

Lt. Hrncir teaches young pilots to fly at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas. A graduate of the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, he flies with each student 20,000 feet up in a T - 37 jet. The jet's nickname is "Tweeter" because of the weird sound its engines make. Lt. Hrncir is 23 years old and his wife, Pam, is also an Air Force instructor pilot.

G.L. Joe Magazine: What kinds of flying do you teach the pilots in training?

Hrncir: The flying lessons are broken into three categories; contact flying, when you fly using landmarks on the ground to navigate; instrument flying, when you learn how to take off, navigate and land by looking only at the gauges in the cockpit; and formation flying, which teaches you to fly very closely to other planes.

G.I. Joe Magazine: How do the pilots react to their lessons? firneir: These are very intelligent people, so most do very well. But I've had some students become immediately airsick after a spin and other students who've frozen up. I have to knock their hands off the controls and take over myself.

G.I. Joe Magazine: What did you think of the flying sequences in "Top Gun?" Hrncir: The flying was very real.

The tension in the cockpit, between the pilots, was very accurate. When two planes are dogfighting, you're constantly straining to stay conscious and alert. It gets very tense.

G.I. Joe Magazine: What was one of your tensest moments in the air?

Hrncir: Once, during a spin, a student misapplied the controls. I had to take over and straighten out the plane closer to the ground than usual.

We were pulling six Gs, which means pulling away from the earth's gravity and feeling six times my own weight.

Pulling Gs causes loss of hand movement and also blurs your vision.

It was scary, but we made it.

Mr. and Mrs. James I. Kostelnik celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Sunday, November 8, 1987 by returning to St. Boniface Catholic Church in Hobson, Texas where a Mass of Thanksgiving was offered by Rev. Julius Dworaczyk.

A dinner reception followed in the parish hall for 120 relatives and friends, hosted by the couple's children and their spouses, James C. and Lucille Kostelnik and Emzy and

Joyce. Garrett. The couple has five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. James I. Kostelnik reside in San Antonio and are both members of SPJST Lodge No. 133 of that city.

James I. Kostelnik and Mary Swize were married on November 8, 1922 in St. Boniface Catholic Church.

The eventful period of the 17th century had a prelude in the Boekaides invasion to Moravia in 1605. Much greater wounds were dealt to the region by the 30 - year war, especially in the first decade and the last phase during the Swedish inroad in 1644 1645. The pauperizing and long lasting wars, the unbearable war requisitions, the pest epidemics were the cause of one - third, nay, often more than half of the farmsteads having deteriorated.

The individual estates were acquired by foreign families, the principal position, however, was kept by the Lichten gtejn and Ditrich gtejn. The subjects were suffering under the second heavy yoke of bondage and the corvee in order that the feudal lords could build up extensive castles, especially the Lednice, the Valtice and Mikulov.

The Bfeclav region on the economic side was and remained the granary of the monarchy; it excelled in vine culture and pheasant keeping.

In the cultural sphere the prime place was kept by the piaristic college at Mikulov, founded in 1631 which was well - known by the outstanding level of the tuition, through music and the school theatre. Almost 600 students were taught by professors of extraordinary reknown, as, for instance, G. Dobner, A. Voigt, D. KrnskY, who stook at the beginning of Czech national liberation.

Mikulov became the refuge and the center of Jews fleeing before the persecution in the 16th and 17th century from Vienna. The Jewish wholesale trade was known by their initiative in the whole central Europe.

The Jewish community at Mikulov was the most numerous in Moravia and its rabbi held a provincial rabbi position.

The veritable dividing stone in the Breclav region became the year 1839, when there the first train arrived to Bfeclav from Vienna. Bfeclav became the railway junction grew up economically, industrially and stood at the beginnings of labor conscience.

For the first time on May 1st was celebrated at Bfeclav and Lanzhot in 1890; the local organization of the social democracy arose in 1893 at Bfeclav and Mikulov.

After the inception of the Czechoslovak republic the class self confidence grew up rapidly. The proletariat awakened by the Great October socialistic revolution radicalized by the war and the after war misery went through various social centests.

The affirmative relation towards proletarian internationalism was certified by the Bfeclav railway men in 1920; in the same way the agricultural laborers took active part in the strike in December 1920. In 1924 the leader of the Bulgarian labor, Jiff Dimitrov, passed Bfeclav and, in 1934, after the suppression of the working man's insurection in Vienna passed through Bfeclav and Mikulov, the advanceminded working men from the neighboring Austria to the Soviet Union.

The Bfeclav region has changed hardly to be recognized in respect of industrialization, the development of agriculture, building - up, transport, commerce, schools and culture.

In praising the Bfeclav region in Czechoslovakia, the scenery in the Palava district the well meritorious master of arts Dr. Jaromir Tomecek Palava district, the well-known meritorious master of arts, Dr. Jaromir Tomeeek, terminates his eulogy with the words: The Bfeclav region, the Palava, the Podpalavf is a country of wonders.

The Breclav region is the southern most area of the South Moravian region and the CSR. The most important river of the Bfeclav region and the greatest affluent of Morava, is the Dyje river which flows round, in a great arch, the whole amphitheatre of the Moravian forests, having been strengthened by the flow of the Svratka, the Jihlava and the Svitava.

The neighboring lowland forests, pierced by a series of pools, the inactive river branches, regularly in springtime flooded, together with the area of Lednice Hlohov fishponds, belong to the most productive nesting places of wild birds.

The region is rare not merely from the natural point of view by the unique reservations of fauna and flora, but also from the settlement point of view.

It yields rare testimony about the people, who had been living there thousands upon thousands of years before our era, as graphically shown by the find places of the mammonth hunters near Pavlov, or the world unique specimen of the "Venus of Vestonice," or the places of finding of the Roman legions. It is equally testified by the Slavonic settlements in the 6th century and the excavations in one of the centers of the Greater Moravian Empire at Pohanska, with the rich finds of jewels, earrings and buttons.

After the doom of the Greater Moravian state the task of the center, such as was previously Pohansko was taken by Bfeclay . It was built up by the prince. Bietislav in the first half of the 11th century to be an important aid to the Czech state in the sensitive border region. The Slavonic feature of the country was partially shattered by the colonization in the 13th century, especially from Austria, when the Bfeclav region was mixed up in the nationality way but it was not Germanized. The Germanization was augmented in the following times up to the 19th century. In the pre - Hussite time there emerged the towns among which was the oldest Podivin, and the greatest in extent was acquired by Mikulov which in 1414 numbered 400 farmlands.

In Hussite time Bfeclav fulfilled its difficult but glorious task of the border country against the incursions from Austria. Much more frightful catastrophes brought the Czech Hungarian wars in the second half of the 15th century and their epilogue in the series of the marauder incursions, when numerous villages and settlements 45) (more than disappeared.

The areas of the destroyed settlements were utilized by the feudal lords for the construction of ponds, when the area of Lednice Hlohovec and Pohorelice fish ponds were created which today are a worldwide unique place with an extra ordinary rare flora and fauna.
