Brother Karas writes correct Czech and the mistakes are NOT his; we apologize and hope our readers keep this in mind. *** Thanksgiving Day started in Plymouth Colony in 1621, when the Pilgrims, who had migrated to Massachusetts, gave thanks that the new land had been good to them and that they had been able to harvest a good crop during their first year. The first officially designated Thanksgiving Day actually was in 1631 in Massachusetts. Abraham Lincoln was the president to proclaim the day a national celebration, and he set the date as the last Thursday in November.

This moveable date, so to speak, was changed by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939 to the 4th Thursday in November, although some states have been somewhat reluctant to change.

Actually, days of thanksgiving with their prayers and feasting are far older than Pilgrim times. The U.S. celebration is an adaptation of Lammas (Loaf Mass) Day, August 1st, which was celebrated in Britain if there was plenty of crop wheat but not otherwise. On Lammas Day the farmers brought loaves of bread made from the successful crop to mass (thus Loaf Mass Day) as a token of thanksgiving. Moreover, thanksgivings for successful crops are common enough to all agricultural people, as the selections that follow testify, though usually the dates are later than August 1 when the yield of crops in addition to wheat is known.

Harvest Home observances mark the end of seasonal tasks involving the work community and at the same time express gratitude for the bounty of nature.

Our modern Thanksgiving is a combination of two very different and very old holidays: The harvest home feast celebrated when the main crops were harvested; and the formal day of thanksgiving proclaimed by a community's authorities to focus attention on a particular event, such as a military victory, or the need for rain.

For approximately the next 250 types of years, these two "thanksgiving" remained quite distinct. Very few formal "days of thanksgiving" coincided with harvest.

They were proclaimed at various times in all regions of the English colonies and were popular. No special foods became associated with them. During the same period (1620 - 1870) harvest home feasts also flourished. The menus of these feasts differed along regional and ethnic lines. The harvest supper of the various nationalities living in Pennsylvania, New York, in Appalachia, in the South, and in New England: all were unique. Because these regional ethnic cultures remained isolated and autonomous, their harvest home and thanksgiving day feasts continued to be local and provincial in character.

During and after the Revolutionary, a desire for national rather than local

holidays developed and an attempt was made to combine harvest home with the formal day of thanksgiving.

George Washington noted in his orderly book October 1777, "Tomorrow being the day set apart by the honorable Congress for Public Thanksgiving and praise, and duty calling us devoutly to express our grateful acknowledgements to God for the manifold blessings he has granted us." Later in the years while President, he appointed the last Thursday in November as a national thanksgiving day. Regional feeling was, however, still too strong for the feast to be accepted nationally. But regionalism began to crumble in the 19th century as mass communications and transportation evolved. Hard surfaced highways, railways, etc. helped a national market develop. An industrial revolution began, cities began to expand, and tens of millions of immigrants flooded in from Europe. A nationalistic spirit developed and pressure was put on both regional and immigrant ethnic cultures to adopt the new national, popular culture.

Compulsory education in public schools insured a measure of common enculturation. The story of the Pilgrims became an ideal medium for fostering "Americanism," so to speak. The last attempt to thwart this nationalism came about in 1861 when the southern slave - owning states seceded, setting off Civil War. During the worst of the fighting, President Lincoln, in an attempt to bolster unionist spirit, appointed the last Thursday in November as an annual national Thanksgiving holiday.

Shortly afterwards, the northern regions won the war and the union was actually preserved. While regionalism quickly faded, the tradition of a combined harvest home and thanksgivng day feast celebrated nationally was accepted. The new holiday featured all the characteristics common today: a church service in the morning, followed by an afternoon's feast and a weekend of sports. The menu centered around roast turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, numerous vegetables, and pumpkin pie --- the main dishes of the New England harvest home feast. Many of these foods had gained popularity because of their supposed connection to the Pilgrims. Thanksgiving as a national cultural event is still relatively unchanged. In a nation of continual and rapid change, it remains surprisingly very important.

The Czech - Americans mainly in Iowa and Minnesota used to celebrate the harvest - home with a thanksgiving supper on the feast of their national patron saint, Duke Wenceslaus of Bohemia (September 28). _ This a celebration was called pout; pilgrimage because it was customary for people from the surrounding countryside to make the journey into town on foot like pilgrims. In Bohemia the pout' really was a sort of pilgrimage, for groups of peasants sang hymns while they walked to the festival and stopped at wayside shrines to offer prayers of thanksgiving for a successful harvest. That Czech Americans held this celebration on the day of their national patron saint was doubly fitting, for Wenceslaus is said to have been, in one respect, a farmer himself. According to tradition, "good King Wenceslaus" with his own hands sowed the wheat and pressed the grapes to be used for the Mass in his own household.

Lodge No. 6 9 Cottonwood Dear Members and Readers: Gosh! The months go by so fast. To me, it seems that I have just written my last report a few days ago. So, here goes again! This time our Lodge 6 meeting was held Tuesday night, November 10 at 7:30 p.m. and it was opened by President Johnnie Krizan.

The pledge to our fl'ag was led by Kevin and Tammi .Dobecka and the SPJST Motto by Kevin Dobecka; all present remained standing for a moment of silence in honor of our member Albert Casper, Jr., age 53, who passed away October 13 in a Waco hospital.

The reading of the minutes of our last monthly meeting by Secretary Barbara Hykel and the treasurer's and financial secretary's reports were given and approved as read.

Correspondence: A letter from Brother Jerry Mikulas of Supreme Lodge reminding us of the convention and that our lodge is entitled to have 4 delegates to represent our Lodge No. 6. We need 20 more new members (adults) to earn another delegate, so you members contact some of your kinfolks or friends and help our representatives to secure new members or have some transfers.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schutz reported on her youth club activities and also reported on her sending get well cards to Cilford Straten, Jeff and Joshua Hykel, Rudolph Matus, Carol Stuckly, Shirley Dobecka, Marie Plumkett and Sara Hrabal. Sympathy cards were sent to Violet Parma and Mary Marek. Their father passed away October 30 at age 89 and also, to the Albert Casper family.

Board of Trustees Chairman George Straten reported on the board meeting held Friday night, November 6 at 7:30 p.m. The discussion was about some work to be done on the ladies' room and kitchen. Edward Hykel spoke up and said he will donate some sheet rock that was needed and also will help others who will be working at the hall.

Other discussion was adding more insurance on the hall, killing fire ants around the hall, and having an Appreciation Party for our workers who work for our lodge. We also set the date for our Christmas Party which will be held December 6 at 1 p.m. beginning with our meeting, election of officers and delegates, followed with a turkey supper, youth program and Santa Claus is coming with his bag of goodies to give to all those who are present.

We also have two active youth club members who received scholarships from the Robert Dobecka family in memory of their daughter, Theresa; they are Kathy Brem and Tammie Mynar and they were presented to them by Brother Bobby Dobecka.

At our last Lodge 6 meeting, the supper served before our meeting was by the Edward Hykel family and Ronnie Kroll family; a delicious barbecue chicken with all kinds of salads, homemade bread and many goodies were enjoyed.

The monthly door prize was won by Sister Georgia Soukup -- present; progressive prize winners were Annie - °

Remember our next board meeting is December 4 at 7:30 p.m. and Christmas Party on December 6 at 1 p.m. Set this date aside and attend this annual event.

A Resolution of Sympathy was read for Brother Ben F. Trcalek, Sr. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family, friends and loved ones.

We have one new member, Antonio Mendez.

Our memorial service will be held on December 6 at 5:30 p.m. There will be a youth program with a meal following. The meal will be a traditional turkey dinner. Lola Vavra and Carol Petty are co - chairpersons to plan the meal.

Our annual family meeting of Lodge No. 23, Moravia will be held on Sunday, December 13 beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Eddie and Frances Vrana's cabin.

From Lodge 32, Victoria

The Victoria Lodge No. 32 meeting was held on November 4, with President Franklin Elles presiding. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and all present remained standing for a moment of silence for our departed members.

Adolf Motal introduced our guest speaker preceding our business meeting. Our speaker was Michael L. Herzik of Katy, who is a candidate for U.S. Congress from District No. 14.

He was born and raised in Praha (Fayette County), Texas and belongs to SPJST Lodge No. 88 in Houston.

His prime interest is in helping our

country in agriculture and oil.

Everyone enjoyed hearing all that he had to tell us.

A report was made on the District VI social meeting held in Hillje on Octqber 25th. Those attending were Matt and Henrietta Vanek, Adolf and Valeria Motal, Michael and Kathy Ahlstrom, James and Monica Yana, Theo and Sylvia Kocian, Becky and Johnny Richardson and children, Kendra, John Thomas, and Bryan, Frances and John Motal and sons, Jason and Eric, Katherine Wokaty, Frank Rokyta, Ella Arnold, and Jim Gajer, father of Sylvia Kocian. This was a very enjoyable get - together and the programs and activities were very well planned. We thank the El Campo and Hillje lodges for this most enjoyable day.

Ella Arnold was selected as the "Fraternalist of the Year" for Lodge No. 32. Her report was sent to the Supreme Lodge for judging with other lodge entries. Ella was presented a lovely plaque by President Elles from our local lodge for her untiring efforts in community service, patriotism and love of country.

We are glad to report that Daniel Svoboda, husband of Vlasta Cuba Svoboda of Lodge No. 32 is recuperating nicely after having had a quadruple by-pass heart surgery recently. All went well.

We were very saddened in the loss of our member, Frank Rokyta, who died suddenly on October 26th. He had attended the social meeting in Hillje SPJST Hall on October 25th. The next day he was found dead in his home; his wife, Ruby Rokyta, had preceded him in death on April 29, 1987. Both were active members with us. Their son - in law, Leo W. McCormick of Victoria, and grandchildren, Shara L. McCormick, Chad Lee McCormick and Mark R. Rokyta, all are members of Lodge No. 32. Our sympathy goes to all their children and grandchildren.

We will all miss Ruby and Frank Rokyta who were also members of the Czech Singers of Victoria. An SPJST scholarship donation was made in memory of Frank Rokyta.

The next meeting is December 2 at "6:30 p.m. at the Victoria Community Center Annex. This will also be our Christmas Party. A snack tray meal will be provided; members are to bring a plate of sweets. A short meeting with election of new officers will be held along with a short Christmas program.

Serving on the Nominating Committee are Michael Ahlstrom, Evelyn Horelka and Lois Elles. Ella Arnold is in charge of the program. All members are invited to the supper meeting and party; call 575 -6851 or 573 - 2330 so that we may know how much food to get, Evelyn Horelka is the party chairman.

66 October Meeting

Our meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m. by President George Pauling.

Flags were presented by Larry Yates and Terry Gilchrest. Chris Pavlicek led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Motto.

Brother Pauling introduced a visitor, Hal Smith (a representative from Leroy Bank) who said he was there to ask for help for the depositors and would be around after the meeting.

Our guide, Tommy Forbes, called the roll of officers. All were present except Dorothy Warren, English reporter. (I was attending my son's homecoming activities.)

Correspondence read were two thank you notes from. Alton Pierson, administrator of Hillcrest Hospital, sent a thank you for the contribution made to the Hospice Center in memory of Sister Simcik and a thank you note was also read from Brother John Simcik and family. Sister Engelke read a letter received from Brother Jerry Mikulas, Financial Secretary of the Supreme Lodge. He stated that our lodge would be able to send 8 delegates and elect 8 alternates to the 25th Convention in Temple.

Brother Pauling showed the plaque for the "Fraternalist of the Year." He thanked Emma Ceska for buying the plaque. Brother Pauling also thanked Brother Frank Parma for building and donating the cabinet to hold photo albums. He thanked Brothers Jim Locke, George Shilling, Ira Niswanger, Frank Kofnovec and Arthur Langlotz for work done on the hall floor.

Minutes of the Board of Trustees' meeting held October 7 were read by Sister Langlotz.

Sister Leona Nors gave the Entertainment Committee report.

There will be no meal served at the November meeting; only popcorn.

The Fraternal Committee chairwoman, Sister Smith, reported they recommended giving $165 each to Salvation Army and Caritas. Members approved this recommendation.

Sister Gloria Locke sent a sympathy card to Brother and Sister Dunagan and a get well card to Brother Ed Mazanec. She also noted that Brother Frank Leshikar had been moved to Hillcrest Manor and would appreciate visitors.

Our youth leader reported there were 12 members present and that they would have a Halloween Party October 23 at the hall. The youth are to bring canned goods to the November meeting to make a basket to give to charity. November 12, the youth will make door - knob covers to carry to the Bellmead Nursing Home.

November 14, the youth will have a cake walk during intermission at the dance.

Sister Parma gave the Trust Fund report. She was presented a check by President Pauling to add to the fund.

Books had been audited and Sister Cory Pruitt reported everything was in order.

New members accepted were Kevin G. Schutza, James Yates, Sr., Jeanette Brown and Kelly Le Ann Handy.

Brother Pauling said Lodge 66 had been challenged to another Taroky Tournament. The challengers are Lodge No. 92, Ft. Worth.

A motion was made and a second given to move our November meeting up to November 8th. The youth meeting will begin at 1 p.m. with the adults to start at 1:30 p.m.

Sister Emma Ceska made the motion that Lodge 66 go on direct billing; Brother Jim Locke seconded the motion. Members will vote on this matter at the November meeting.

Door prize winner was Sister Gloria Locke.

There was no one present who had a birthday in October, therefore, members with December birthdays were honored since there is no meeting in December. The birthday cake was brought by Alisha Neslony.

Lodge 66 Elects Officers and Delegates Our regular monthly meeting was called to order at 1:30 p.m. on November 8 by President George Pauling. Flags were presented by Bill Warren and Larry Yates with Ashley Locke leading the Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Motto: Everyone was asked to remain standing for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased member, Brother John Simcik.

Our Guide Tommy Forbes read the roll call of officers and all were present. We had one visitor, John Reich.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved after some minor corrections.

Sister Langlotz read the minutes of the November 4 Board meeting.

Brother James Locke thanked everyone who helped paint the sign that has Linden Hall on it.

The Entertainment Committee report, given by Sister Ruby Orsag, concerned the upcoming holiday

season. The lodge's Christmas Party will be December 5 with dinner served at 5 p.m. Members are asked to bring desserts. She also read a thank you note from Nita Mazanec for the card sent to Mr. Mazanec from our lodge.

Sister Jeanette Smith gave the Fraternal Committee report. She stated that Caritas and Salvation Army each received $165. Sister Smith then recognized Sister Mary Langlotz and all the bingo workers for all they did.

Without them, the many donations our lodge made would not have been possible. West Community Hospital Association thanked our lodge for donating the facilities for their Halloween dance.

Sister Gloria Locke sent get well cards to Glena Dunagan and Mrs. James Pavlicek, Jr. A sympathy card was sent to the John Simcik family and Eugene Gerlich, Jr. Our youth leader reported that the youth would meet November 12 to make Christmas door knob covers to take to the Bellmead Rest Home. They would have a cake walk November 14 and meet December 2 to decorate the lodge and fill stockings.

President Pauling presented Sister Parma a check for the Trust Fund.

Resolution of Sympathy for Brother John Simcik was read by Sister Engelke.

Our lodge was challenged to another Tarok Tournament which is scheduled for November 21st. Challenge' s will be Lodge No. 92, Ft. Worth.

A vote was taken on direct billing, however it did not pass.

Due to the Christmas Holiday Season, we will not have a meeting in December, only our Christmas Party.

Our door prize winner was Sister Bonnie Pruitt.

Next on the agenda was the election of officers, Board of Trustees, Entertainment Committee, and Delegates.

The Alvin Community College Czech Class has completed another semester and is sponsoring the showing of the highly - acclaimed Czech movie, "The Fireman's Ball," on Sunday, December 6 at 2 p.m. The movie, a comedy, is directed by the noted Czech Director Milos Forman. It is in the Czech language with English sub titles, so one need not be able to speak Czech in order to understand and enjoy the action. The public is invited and it is hoped there will be a large turnout. There will be no charge to see the film, but a nominal voluntary donation will be accepted. The movie will be shown in the "Hideout," which is located in the round building in the center of the campus. The accompanying map will show you how to find the campus. Alvin is an easy drive for those of you living in Houston, Rosenberg, Galveston, Freeport, Bay City, and surrounding areas, so what better way to spend an enjoyable Sunday _afternoon outing?

Our meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. The minutes were read and approved. All chairpersons and treasurer's reports were excellent.

We had one new member Carol A. Wiest.

The trustees' report was given by Josie Tomastik; they decided to replace the ceiling tiles that are bad, recarpet the stage, the hall doors have been painted and work goes on and on at the hall.

The Christmas Party was discussed.

The committee decided to shy away from the traditional turkey and dressing meal and have ham and sausage, candied yams, pea salad, potato salad, cheese and raw vegetables tray, tea, bread and dessert instead. The hall will open at 3 p.m. for refreshments and socializing; the meal will be served at 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 13 for members only.

It was further decided to decorate the hall Friday, November 27 at 5 p.m.; anyone wanting to volunteer, feel free to come.

There being no more business, our election of officers was held. The day of anticipation finally arrived, November 14th, and all that we planned turned out to be a huge success. Let me explain: Around September our lodge President Jerry Sizemore came up with the idea of having our first Presidental Ball. It would be a dinner and dance night and strictly dress code. From that day on, we had projects of fixing up and upgradin g our lodge and we did. We want to thank the people who dedicated themselves and hung on to the last minutes of preparation. I would like to acknowledge Jerry and Gloria Sizemore, John and Helen Anderson, Ken and Betty Thornton, Walter and Bea Williams, Frank and Delores Juarez, Ken and Charlotte Rolands. my wife, Seale, and me.

Thanks also to my good friend, Ronnie Freeman of R&R Mobile Homes Manufacturing for donating the carpet to cover our bandstand and Temple - Eastex of Diboll for donating the plywood for the bandstand floor.

Well, folks, it was a "sellout" night.

Everyone attending looked like a million dollars. The food was absolutely delicious catered by Miss Linda Kayal; she did a fabulous job.

We had the Henry Tannenberger Orchestra come in from Houston and the music was just perfect and, needless to say, everyone stayed to the last minute. am sorry I've neglected to keep up with the monthly activities through the Vestnik. I have also forgotten many of our other activities that we have had.

A little light on our Hawaiian luau dance, which was a really fun dance.

Everyone dressed real colorfully and 1 remember having a real good time.

Then our Halloween dance, which is always a fun dance -- lots of crazy costumes and a lot of fun.

I guess by the time you read this article, you will be full of turkey or maybe eating turkey sandwiches for lunch hereafter. I figure it is never too late to wish everyone in SPJST country a happy and thankful Turkey Day. God bless you all.

The Birthday Club Sisters met for their regular monthly meeting on November 11, 1987, in the lodge dining room (close to the kitchen where the good food aroma is available). That gives us all a good appetite. The. meeting convened , at

11:15 a.m. with President Rita Alexander presiding.

Rosalee Kostom, who's been our secretary for many years, read the minutes of the previous meeting, which were approved as read.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the financial report, which included the report of the pastry booth on Czech Day. I was amazed at all the good pies, cakes, kolache and strudels that were brought to us by SPJST members other than the Birthday Sisters; even some friends who don't belong to our Society brought pastry. Thanks so much to all you lovely people who showed an interest and helped us.

Lillie, who was in charge of the booth also thanks all of you and those who helped her, especially Evelyn Mikolas, Esther Holton, Lydia Marsh and Juanita Simon.

Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut gave the card report. She's kept very busy contacting our ill members.

The Birthday Club was saddened, again, by losing another loved member, Mrs. Louise Chudej; she will be missed so much since she never missed our regular functions and even qualified to be a delegate, and above all, she loved our club.

The ladies who are ill are Emily Bily, who has been ill for 3 years. I was just informed today that she was in the hospital. We need to express our love for her and her family in some way, especially, at Christmas. Minnie Bravenec is in a nursing home; she was very active in our Lodge 88 until she became incapacitated several years ago. Mary Schenburn has been down in her back for sometime and presumably will have surgery soon.

Della Kadlecek has been real sick, but is doing much better now. I am glad to report that Lillian and Harry Finn are on the mend and hopefully will be back in circulation. When God closed one door, he opened another for this fine couple. Betty Kulhanek, a club member, informed me that her 38 year - old brother had a massive heart attack. He is survived by a wife and three children. You ha ,, c our sympathy.

Mr. and Mrs. Steve Kelly were so overjoyed when their pretty granddaughter, Lisa Kelly, performed at Cy - Fair High Sehool with the choir and orchestra putting on a musical recital. Lisa sang "Take Back Your Mink " from Guys and Dolts. She surprised her grandpai ems with the talent of singing and acting she possesses. She probably took after her grandmother who plays the piano so well. Estelle was formerly president of the Birthday Club for a number of years.

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Miculka, Ed and Ellen just returned from a month vacation. Two weeks were spent with Ed's daughter, Donna and son - in law, Paul East, in Boston, Massachusetts. They had a beautiful visit, sightseeing and also spent sometime with Ellen's relatives in the east. They said it was a "fun" trip.

Ellen was the financial secretary for Lodge 88 for 13 years and Ed is the president of Lodge 88 Men's Club.

Our hostesses for November were Bessie Dewer (who cooked for Anna Hoffman), Delores Condon, Inez Jeanes, and Ardith McClelland helped when she noticed the ladies needed help.

Our birthday celebrities for November were Alice Bily, Minnie Bravenec, Mary Schenburn and Virginia Hale. "Happy Birthday" was sung and we adjourned at 12:00 noon.

Friendship Club Of Ft. Worth Report Dear Members and Friends: This is a reminder of our Wednesday, December 2nd meeting at 10:30 a.m. After the meeting, there will be a Christmas dinner consisting of ham and all the trimmings. The members are to bring the same covered dish as for the Thanksgiving dinner, except in smaller quantities. A gift of not less than $5 will be exchanged at the party.

Our Thanksgiving Family Night dinner was well attended and we welcomed many guests, names of whom are too numerous to mention.

We wish to thank Elma Anderson, Rosemary Gribble, Ima Lou La Plant and her daughter, Linda Rangel, for preparing the turkeys, dressing and gravy. NVe also wish to thank the hostesses who helped in the kitchen and for their assistance in the serving line. They were Jo Prochaska, Rose Steinman, Geneva Hennessey, Josephine Bugaj and Mary Pavey.

Birthday wishes were expressed through song to Merel Kovar, Elma Anderson, Joe Milan and Genevieve Earle.

The homemade quilt donated by Mollie Walker will be given to a lucky winner at our December meeting.

We would like to express our condolences to Rosemary Gribble on the loss of her sister, who passed away on November 5th.

Those of us who are members of SPJST Metroplex Lodges Nos. 92, 154, 180 and 183 are looking forward to a pleasurable Christmas Party being hosted by Lodge 180, Burleson on Sunday, December 13th. Don't miss this party because, as in the past, it has been great fun!

What a nice turnout of members for our November 5 meeting!

President Zvolanek opened the meeting with the pledge to our flag and a moment of silence for our departed member, Angelina Ozymy.

Jana Nesestrova, who is visiting here from Czechoslovakia, was introduced.

She is the guest of George and Dorothy Reznik and also visiting with Calvin and Mildred Chervenka.

Special recognition was given to Agnes Janecka who was crownec.

Trojacek, Phil Reames, Roy Alholm, Frank Houzvicka, Alvin Elsik, Charlie Kocian, Frank Noska, Julius Podhrasky, Arnold Vrla, and Ella Mae Faraizl. Members who haven't been with us for a while were acknowledged, namely, Evelyn Salac, Millie Noska, Lillian Kaska and Barbara Dybala.

Minutes of the October meeting were read and treasurer's report was given by Mary Sebestik and Vicki Kohn who always do an excellent job.

Correspondence Secretary Helen Vrla, Jr. read thank you notes from Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Houpy, Jr. (for our donation in memory of Angelina Ozymy), Libbie Slovak (for her birthday card), and Martha Kocian (for get well wishes). Literature was received from Arthritis Foundation, Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, and American Lung Association.

Membership Chairperson Bertha Malik had membership books for those members who have not received them.

Sunshine Chairperson Liddie Pavelka and Libbie Elsik sent get well greetings to Martha Kocian, Joe Pokladnik, Mary and Frank Stransky.

Sympathy cards were sent to the family of Angelina Ozymy and Theresa Carper.

Birthday Card Chairperson Bessie Reames mailed greetings to the following November Celebrants Mary Nesuda, Lillian Moran, Libbie Smith, Lillian Graeser and Rose Parma.

Hostesses this month were Libbie Smith, Barbara Dybala, Millie Noska and Lillian Kaska.

Reporter Dorothy Reznik stated she had a nice telephone conversation with Bessie Houpy. Bessie said she always enjoys reading about our Circle in the Vestnik. Zdenka Skotak agreed she would write to the Vestnik in the Czech language, occasionally.

Bessie Reames stated that the Czech Day at the Fair turned out very beautiful. She announced the next meeting of the Czech Cultural Society would be the last Monday of November. She also announced the next meeting of Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council would be on Wednesday, November 18 at the SPJST Lodge No. 84 Hall with Lodge 84 hosting, and KJT No. 111 (31st) anniversary on Sunday, November 22nd.

Anne Zvolanek said she received photos from Merel Kovar. These photos were taken when our Circle visited in Fort Worth, Texas. We agreed to buy a picture for our scrapbook.

Bertha Podhrasky thanked those sisters who came out to the Sokol and helped in the preparation of the food for the Sokol's anniversary dinner.

Bertha also invited everyone of us to attend the Christmas Party at Sokol on Saturday, December 19th. Our Circle agreed to, once again, donate towards this party.

We talked about our Circle's Christmas Party and were reminded to turn in any dinner reservations to Vicki Kohn by November 26th. Please, also remember to purchase a gift in the amount of $3; put your name on it, and bring it to the party. Liddie Pavelka will be in charge of the game we will play. Bertha Podhrasky will take care of the table set - up. Dorothy Reznik will arrange the songs we will sing.

A Correction The article "Few facts about the Czech class at Alief" written by Brother John J. Among the Czech - Moravian descendants in Texas, the word pout' is still used at harvest time as a community celebration much as the word "fest" such as pout' in Praha, Texas August 15 each year (known as Matiela Praha Pout'); "Westfest" in West, Texas held during Labor Day weekend. District II Skating Party The Skating Party was a success as usual. The attendance was a little smaller but the enthusiasm was great.

Lodge 40, El CampoHillje YC Meeting We had a meeting on November 5, 1987 at the Wharton County Electric Coop Building.

We discussed old and new business.

District VI Youth Counselor Anita Roye gave us dates of important events with the SPJST. Door prizes were won by Bradley Rubesh, Lisa Morris and Darrin Dybala.

We made turkeys at home for a contest for November. In ages 6 to 10 were: 1st -- Jody Krpec, 2nd -- Martha Bartos, 3rd -- Lisa Morris. In ages 11 and up: 1st -- Lori Holub, 2nd -- Kim Kacal, 3rd -- Jody Henderson.

November 7 our youth went to the Texas Renaissance Festival at Plantersville, Texas. We had a great and good time.

We will have our Christmas Party on December 3rd at 7:30 p.m. at the Hillje Hall.

From Lodge No. 84 Youth September Meeting News

The September 21, 1987 meeting of Lodge No. 84 Junior Youth Club was called to order at 7:40 p.m. by Vice President Aaron Kopecky. C.J. Novak led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. We remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for peace and the good of our members.

The roll call was read. There were 25 members present, 6 guests, and 11 adults (6 of which were leaders).

The secretary read the minutes of our last meeting and the treasurer read the dues report.

Unfinished business was congratulations to all State Youth Achievement Day winners.

The Czechfest was a success, and we thanked everyone who came and those who worked a game booth or participated in the event. The Youth Extravaganza was a success; for we had collected a lot of money which will be donated to the Abused Children's Foundation. Everyone enjoyed the talent show and reviewing all the crafts and foods.

District III is having cookbooks printed, and all of the youth clubs are asked to sell them, for there had tteen a large request for Czech recipes. A booth will be set - up at some mother lodge's activities and functions.

Door prize winners were Collectte Kinney, Aaron Kopecky, Christopher Tonic and C.J. Novak.

News From Lodge No. 84

Youth

The October 15, 1987 meeting of Lodge No. 84 Junior Youth Club was called to order. Our meeting was said to be very short, due to it being a school night and Beseda practice for the fair was scheduled.

There were 32 members and 17 adults present (7 of them were leaders).

Our Head Youth Leader Bessie Petr announced the schedule of the Fair for October 18 at the Band Shell. A District III meeting was scheduled to be in Fort Worth Lodge No. 154 on October 25th. The Halloween Party was scheduled for Halloween afternoon on October 31 from 2 to 4 p.m. Cookbooks are available to sell at $6.50 each.

The meeting was adjourned and we all ran to our places to practice Beseda with Brother Sid's Orchestra.

Expression Of Sympathy The Resolution Committee and the entire membership of Lodge Vytrvalost No. 138 of Ganado wish to express our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Irene Hodde and her bereaved family at the death of her father ROBERT J. ZAJICEK, who passed away after a rather brief illness in a Victoria hospital.

Mr. Zajicek was born June 3, 1901 in Wesley, Texas to George and Rosalee Horak Zajicek.

He was married to Ella Tegeler; they had one daughter, Irene.

Funeral services were held on October 25, 1987 at St. James Lutheran Church with Pastor Donald Marquart officiating with Mrs. Kenneth McElveen, organist, assisting.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Ganado Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Raymond Lee Pagel, Gus Tegeler, Jr., W.L. Tegeler, Adolph Zajicek, Jr., Carl Zajicek and Raymond Zajicek.

Survivors include daughter and son in - law, Irene and Joe Hodde; grandsons, Randall Hodde of Houston, Kenneth Hodde of Weimar; a sister, Emily Krajcik of Victoria; and many nephews, nieces, friends and neigbors.

He was a faithful member of Lodge No. 138 and attended the meetings, regularly. He will be missed by all of us.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our dearly departed brother BEN F. TRCALEK, SR., who passed away suddenly on October 7, 1987 in Temple, Texas.

Brother Trcalek was born on December 9, 1920 in the New Tabor community, the son of the late Boleslav Karel (B.K.) and Anna Vavra Trcalek. He had lived most of his life in the Cooks Point community. He was retired from the Texas A&M University Fiscal Department after 34 years of service.

At the time of his death, he was engaged in ranching. He was the District I director for the SPJST and very active in local lodge activities. He was a member of the Caldwell Brethren Church, serving on the Board of Elders. He was treasurer of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas, a board member of the Cooks Point Community Service, Inc. and a former director in the Burleson County Saddle Club.

He was a 1941 graduate of Texas A&M University, a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in the 4th Infantry Division, and served overseas in the European Theater of the war. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 4458 in Caldwell and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 17, New Tabor.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Willie H. Trcalek.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Trcalek; one son, Ben Trcalek, Jr. and a sister, Esther Zavodny, all of Caldwell. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Serving as active pallbearers were Clint Luksa, Ernie Waldrop, Theodore Dusek, Ray Erpelding, Edwin Hlavaty and Melvin Skrabanek.

Serving as honorary pallbearers were officers and directors of the Supreme Lodge SPJST, Caldwell Brethren Church Elders and Walter L. Lightsey, J.J. Skrivanek, Ernest A. Wentrcek and Clark Diebol.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace and may his memory live with each of us forever.

Of Sympathy SPJST Lodge No. 153, Bennview officers and members express sympathy to the surviving family of brother CLARENCE JOHN HAFERNICK, age 65, of Lolita who died Saturday, November 7, 1987 in Edna Hospital.

He was born April 23, 1922 in Ellinger, Texas. He was married on September 15, 1947 in El Campo.

He was a former teacher and coach for the Industrial Independent School District, past president of Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and past member of ISD board serving 15 years.

He was a veteran of World War II in the Air Force. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Lolita, a Boy Scout leader, a member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church and past member of the parish council.

He was a member of SPJST and was RVOS treasurer.

He was graduated from the University of Texas in 1947 with bachelor of arts and master of arts degree. He was a member of the UT track team from 1942 - 43 and from 1945 - 47.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Monday at St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Vanderbilt with the Rev. Eugene Janson officiating. Burial was in St. Andrew's Catholic Cemetery in Hillje, under the direction of the Slavik Funeral. Home of Edna.

Of Sympathy The SPJST Lodge No. 39, Bryan officers and members express sincere sympathy to the surviving family of HATTIE HOLUBEC KRISTYNIK, who died Monday evening in a local hospital. She would have been 69 years old on Sunday.

A funeral service was held at 1:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. John McCaffrey officiating. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery. A rosary was recited Tuesday at Memorial Funeral Chapel.

Mrs. Kristynik, born in Kurten, had lived in Bryan for 15 years and in Houston for 30 years before moving back to Kurten 15 years ago.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and of St. Clair's Altar Society and KJZT Lodge No. 6, both of St. Joseph's. She was also a member of KJT of Bryan, American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 159, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post No. 4692 in Bryan and SPJST Lodge No. 39 of Bryan.

Items Of Interest Our Small Town Postmasters

The tournament which attracted 52 card players from throughout Texas was held during the Victoria County Czech Heritage Festival_ at the Community Center Annex. Over 800 people attended the 3rd event which was sponsored by the brewery.

Festival Doubles In Attendance The Victoria County Czech Heritage Festival, held October 18, 1987 in Victoria, Texas doubled in attendance from last year's event -- a measure which truly shows its success, noted President Joe Janak of the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society.

The Society, organized in June, 1984, set forth with an objective "To preserve the history, heritage, culture and language of the Czech people" and, in 1985, held its first festival with over 200 people attending. The second festival in 1986 doubled to nearly 400 . people and now the third annual event more than doubled again to well over 800 people attending.

Janak attributes its success to hard work and determination by its 60 - plus members and to scheduling of events that are of the "old" traditional Czech. The hall was packed with people and everyone had a splendid time.

The festival started in 1985 with the organizing of the First Texas State Tarok Tournament. Taroks or "Taroky" in Czech, is a card game which many of our Czech forefathers brought to America a hundred or more years ago. Being Czech culture, the society chose to preserve it by promoting it with a state contest. It has been very successful; it, too, doubled in participation from 24 in the first tournament to 52 in the October 1987 festival. (See winners' picture.)

Competition is keen; participants from as far as 200 miles away deal to win $250 in cash plus Texas - shaped plaques.

Other events which brought in the crowd included the authentic Czech meal served at noon, which was a total sellout. All the baked good -- kolache, etc. were also gone by the end of the day!

The event also included a "Czech Sing - Along," a feature everyone enjoyed and numerous participated in.

Also, an "Accordian Jam Session," an addition which widened the smiles and perked up the ears of many as the squeeze - boxes battled out the songs of request.

While all of this was taking place, the Czech Baking Contest was being judged. Lois Elles of Victoria received the Best Czech Baker trophy, and the following received first place within their category: Louise Jurena of Yoakum -- white bread, cheese kolache

and poppyseed kolache; Marjorie Watts of Refugio -- rye bread; Edith Krenek of Victoria -- prune kolache; Merle West of Victoria -- poppyseed cake; Lois Elles of Victoria -poppyseed buchta. In the Commercial Division, the following first places were awarded: Halepaska Bakery of Victoria -- white bread; Pat's Sweet Shop of Schulenburg -- sausage kolache. These first place entries were then auctioned off with the proceeds going to support the society's projects.

All this was great entertainment, but yet to follow was singing by the Victoria Czech Singers and the Czech Singers of East Bernard. Victor Cejka, accordianist from Shiner, also played notes which kept the pace happy.

There was also much to see such as the 400 - piece authentic Czech display of jewelry, crystal, dolls, history and other items exhibited by Anne Spencer of Corpus Christi. Also a booth with Czech goods such as homemade noodles, poppyseed, Czech Christmas cards, "Jak se m8' buttons, etc. were available. The hail decorations featured old photographs of Czech families, catching everyone's eye.

After the awarding of the Tarok State Championship plaques by Jules Silvers, co - owner of Spoetzl Brewery, Inc. and sponsor of the festival along with Allison - Shiner of Victoria, the Rudy Kurtz, Jr. Orchestra of Port Lavaca provided dancing entertainment for all. Proceeds from the festival have been used to make donations to the Victoria Public Library for the purchase of Czech books, the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas for the establishment of a Czech language chair, the society's project of compiling, into a book, the history of all Texas Czech orchestras and bands, and other donations for the preservation of the Czech history, language, heritage and genealogy.

Millions of Americans depend on the more than 30,000 post offices for a lot more than just the mail.

A recent study found American citizens have long viewed postal service as a daily necessity; a right rather than a privilege.

A nostalgic view of the typical post office pictures the citizens sitting in rocking chairs around a pot belly stove, swapping tall tales. Those stoves may be cold today, but the rural, small town and suburban post offices are still a focal point of society, a communications center and a neighbor and counselor for many.

Despite the inroads made by rural free delivery, many small - town residents still prefer to rent boxes at their post office. This is a choice of convenience. They would rather be sociable (taking daily trips to the post office) than lonely (awaiting delivery of mail at home). The daily ritual of walking to the post office, of visiting there with neighbors, of being recognized and called by name --- all of this seems part of a comforting ceremony and an important item on the social agenda.

The post office is also an old friend to many older people. Often, older citizens whose eyes may be too dim to read small print ask postal workers to read aloud contracts and other documents. In some cases, the postal worker not only explains the document in hand, he or she helps the person write a suitable response.

The elderly are regularly helped with package - wrapping and envelope window especially --stuffing envelopes, a contrivance often troublesome to people with weak eyes and arthritic fingers.

Wherever possible, Social Security checks are sorted in advance of the day of distribution, so recipients can get their checks first thing in the morning, before the rest of the day's mail is distributed.

In some rural post offices, arrangements with the local bank make it possible for a postmaster to sign checks on behalf of citizens too feeble to sign for themselves.

Postmasters keep an eye on their daily elderly customers. When one fails to show up, the postmaster may telephone or else dispatch someone to the missing person's house.

These are just some of the important responsibilities of a postmaster in addition to seeing that the mail is delivered.

Can Make A Difference

Remember neighborhoods? They used to stand for something. A community of interest...something to be proud of...to brag about. In rural areas, a whole town could be a neighborhood. In the cities, a neighborhood could be a floor in a big apartment building. But we knew we belonged. Suppose we revitalized that spirit. Suppose we all saw the benefits of making our neighborhoods better.

12/VESTNIK—Wednesday, November 25, 1987 Suppose as part of that spirit we made sure our home or apartment, or yard was in order, then offered to do the same thing for that elderly couple down the street. Suppose we decided not to wait, or even expect the government to "take care of it" --whatever the need --- and took it upon ourselves.

From a personal standpoint one believes that one person can make a difference --- a world of difference.

Goal - setting is habit - forming, especially if you can enjoy the personal satisfaction of making something good --- anything good --- happen regularly.

As your positive "can do" attitude spills over to your neighbor, to your schools and churches, then, by example, it will soon flow from city hall to the state house and, ultimately, it will spread throughout this great land.

They could be small individual steps at first, but the momentum could quickly build toward making our neighborhood improvement as one step in making our country better ... and our world.

Remarried Couples Need Financial Plan A budget and spending plan can benefit any family, but for remarrieds it may be critical, says a Texas A&M consumer economics specialist.

Finances, children and child rearing have been identified by researchers as the major problems in many remarriages, says Bonnie Piernot, with finances often ranking the highest.

People entering a remarriage often have assets -- and debts -- to bring to the new marriage. When couples share this information prior to the wedding, it will make it easier to develop a financial plan, says the economist.

Fluctuating income from child support can be a major strain on the new family's budget.

One recent study of remarried couples in Kentucky found that when child support was awarded, 36 percent either never received it, received it irregularly or regularly received it but not in the full amount, she reports.

According to the specialist, a financial plan for remarrieds can involve saving ahead for large annual or semi - annual bills and unexpected expenses so they won't be caught short by fluctuating income.

Like any family, remarried couples can also benefit from planned spending that enables them to meet bills, reduce debt and save for future goals, adds Piernot.

Develop Partnership For Health A partnership in which patient and doctor share the responsibility for maintaining or restoring health can contribute to quality health care, according to a health education expert.

Becoming an active partner in your health care starts by choosing a doctor you can communicate with, says Dr. Mary Ann Heussner. Select a doctor who will listen, ask questions and thoroughly explain a diagnosis or treatment.

She emphasizes that patients have equal responsibilities to communicate by giving complete and accurate information to their doctors and asking questions when they don't understand.

Since you're paying for : expert medical advice, never hestitate to question your doctor about anything you don't understand. Don't be reluctant to ask the doctor to translate medical jargon into plain language or to take notes if you wish.

The Texas A&M specialist with the AES home economics program notes that it may be especially important to ask questions about diagnostic tests, medications and the costs, risks and benefits of treatment alternatives.

To take a more active role in your health care, the specialist advises the following steps: Keep a record of your personal health history. It will be helpful in providing information the doctor may need for a diagnosis. A Family Health and Medical Record is available through County Extension offices.

Prepare in advance for a doctor's visit. Be prepared to provide the doctor with specific information on your current problem, symptoms, family medical history, current medications and personal habits.

Read labels on over - the - counter medicines and take prescribed medicine according to directions.

Make sure you know how and when you should take the medicine and for how long. Ask about side effects, and if there are any foods, beverages, medicines or activities that should be avoided while taking the medication.

Follow the doctor's treatment plan.

When you have doubts about a treatment plan, get a second opinion.

But once you and your doctor agree on a treatment plan, it's a waste of time and money if you fail to carry it out.

Practice a wellness lifestyle. This may include having regular medical checkups, having immunizations, losing weight and stopping smoking.

Vaccine is especially recommended for these people.

The vaccine is also recommended for household contacts of these high risk people. Medical personnel should get the flu shot to protect the patients they treat as well as themselves.

However, anyone who doesn't want to run the risk of being sick with the flu for two weeks may get vaccinated.

Dr. Howard noted that people in their 30s or younger were hit hard with the new strain of flu last year because, unlike older people who caught that virus in the 1950s, they had not had the opportunity to build up immunity to this particular strain of flu.

One Shot Should Do It Last year, a new strain of virus developed after manufacturers of the vaccine had put it together for the year. Therefore, in order to be protected, patients had to get two shots.

This year, however, you should be able to be immunized against the flu with the shot, unless a new strain develops again this year. Children who did not receive at least one dose of any influenza vaccine from 1978 to 1987 should receive two doses of this year's vaccine, a minimum of four weeks apart.

Dr. Bess Gold, pediatric infectious disease specialist at Scott and White in Temple and assistant professor of pediatrics at Texas A&M University College of Medicine, highly recommends the influenza vaccination for children in the high - risk categories. She adds that any child over six months old may get the vaccine in order to void the flu.

Frostbite -- A Serious Winter Hazard

NOW is the time to get your annual flu shot.

It takes four to six weeks after the vaccination for the body to produce the antibodies necessary to combat the influenza virus. The flu virus usually gets to Texas between Christmas and New Year's.

Dr. John Quarles, associate professor of microbiology at Texas A&M University of College of Medicine, says the incidence of the flu in the Texas A&M student body is typical of the rest of the state's population.

We usually see a major outbreak of the flu right after Christmas break.

Students come back to campus from virtually all over the world and bring the flu virus with them, said Dr. Quarles, who charts the flu's activity on campus and who has been involved with influenza research.

He added that there is usually an outbreak of colds when students return to campus in the fall, but that there is a big difference between a cold and the flu. For unknown reasons, flu is a winter disease in the northern hemisphere. Colds occur throughout the year. Although colds produce flu like symptoms, the flu makes you feel much worse than a cold.

The flu stops you in your tracks, said Dr. Paxton Howard, infectious disease specialist at Scott and White in Temple and professor of internal medicine at Texas A&M University College of Medicine.

In addition to the upper respiratory problems that a cold produces, the flu causes lower respiratory problems and makes you achy all over. The flu can be particularly serious in the elderly

What is the best treatment for frostbite? Here are some views from John W.Becher, Jr., D.O., Chairman of Emergency Medicine.

First, it is important to recognize that frostbite is the actual freezing of body tissue. The most important thing to remember with frostbite is to keep the injured part cold until you can be sure it will not be subject to refreezing once it has thawed. Thawing and re freezing is considered the most damaging thing that can happen.

If competent medical attention can be reached quickly, the frozen portion should probably be kept literally on ice. Inside a warm car or vehicle, it would actually be best to pack the frozen arm or leg in ice. This will prevent a gradual thaw that increases tissue damage.

In cases where it is impossible to reach a physician in less than several hours, Dr. Becher, an osteopathic physician, recommends the following: Heat water to a temperature between 100 and 108 degrees Fahrenheit.

Immerse the frostbitten part in a suitable container filled with this warm water.

Handle the frozen part as little as possible. Do not massage it. This will cause further damage.

Keep the injured part in the warm water until the tip of the thawed part flushes, is warm to the touch, and remains flushed when removed from the bath.

With this rapid thawing the injured person may notice some degree of sensation returning to the affected part. When blisters develop...and they will in all but the mildest cases...sensation will disappear again

and will not return until healing is complete. Do not touch or prick the blisters open. They are clean and protect the underlying tissue so that healing can begin.

Remember, an untrained person should only attempt to thaw a frozen part when physician care cannot be reached within several hours. Medical supervision is preferred because it will almost always improve the chances of complete recovery.

Kdo za to vlastne mule?

To si neumite pfedstavit, jak' to byl prb nes gok. Vratili jsme se z dovolene o t?i dny &lye a nage Hani6ka, a nag byt ... Ani nevim, jak bych to iekl. Proste v byte, na kterY si hlavne manielka tak potrpi, byl stragny nepofadek, spousta cigaretoveho nejake Iahviiky a lest spolulakel.

Hanioka byla jako matoha. Nejcifiv se na nas nepfitomne usmivala a pak pozvracela nag krasnY koberec.

Pravda, ul &lye jsme si vgimfi, ie bYva nejaka divka. V uoeni se zhorgila, doma s nikYm nem/uvila. Mys/eli jsme si, ie je to puberta, vidyf je ji ul dvanact prya.

Dali jsme ji vgechno, co jsme mohli. Sotva ji bylo roku, gla manielka do prate, abychom mohli dcefi zafidit detskY pokoj.

Ja odjakiiva practiji o sobotach a nedelich.

Nejdfiv jsme staveli chatu a ted' — vgak to znate — nejakji ten melouch se vidycky najde, tak jsme ji mohli &Vat pornygleni.

Hanka se uoila dob/e. Vgak taky za kaidou jedniaku dostala korunu a za vysvedieni samozfejme vic.

I k domacim pracfm jsme ji vedli. Za umyti nadobi dostala pet korun, za vyluxovani tri. Kdyi n6co provedla, penize jsme ji strhli.
