Marie V. Janac Celebrates 96th Birthday Wednesday, October 28, 1987 officers and members of Lodge No. 9 Snook gathered with family members and friends along with District I Director Andrew Vavra at the home of Mrs. Marie V. Janac to celebrate her 96th birthday.

Sister Janac was born on September

5, 1891 in Snook, Texas, the daughter of Joe and Annie (Mikula) Junek. She had six brothers and three sisters. One brother John A. Junek now resides in a rest home in College Station, Texas.

One sister, Mrs. Annie Kulhanek, resides in a rest home in Bryan, Texas.

The other brothers and sisters are no longer living.

Sister Janac has lived all of her 96 years in Snook. As a young girl, she lived on the farm with her family and helped with all the chores. She was (Continued on page 3)

What is a convention? Convention is a body of delegates, representatives, members of the like, periodically convened for a common purpose.

Individuals have been trying to define the term for many, many years.

Some have been trying to change the definition. To us it connotes a gathering of persons for a common educational, business, and social purpose. The size of the occasion doesn't matter. You can nit - pick about whether it's a meeting or a conclave or a conference. The term convention covers all of these.

Camaraderie, fellowship. If you don't get that feeling of community, the convention will not be a successful one, regardless of how great the educational sessions or the speakers are. *** The purpose of originating districts, which were approved at the SPJST Convention in 1952 at Houston, is so that each district is better represented at the Supreme Lodge and district meetings by electing its director and other committee members from its district; to have a district representative to recruit sales force for selling life insurance. These, of course, are some of the main reasons for organizing districts and dividing the state so each director and/or committee member has a certain territory to be responsible for. *** Suppose your elderly father is a widower, living alone. What if he gets sick with a terminal illness -- who will care for him as his condition worsens?

As a matter of family loyalty, you may feel obligated to take on the entire burden yourself. But think it through.

The physical, financial and emotional stresses brought on by caring for a chronically ill relative can take a crushing toll: Marriages break up, jobs are lost. Some caretakers neglect their own health. Others turn to alcohol or painkillers to relieve the depression and exhaustion. Still others end up abusing their charges. A few care givers have even been driven to suicide.

Approximately six million elderly patients suffering from various disabling illnesses need long - term care. The responsibility for caring for ill relatives has traditionally fallen to women -- wives, daughters or mothers.

But it makes more sense to share the burden without regard to gender.

Caring for an ailing relative -especially the mentally ill, who often cannot be left alone even for a few minutes -- can be a full - time job and more. If you are like most adults, you already have a job you need to keep, plus your own family to look after.

Medical profession recommends to spread the responsibility among as many relatives as possible, including even members of the extended family.

If there aren't enough relatives, consider bringing in someone for at least a few hours each day. The patient's doctor may be able to help you find an organization that supplies volunteers to provide some free assistance. But you will probably have to hire someone eventually. If the

patient's health is fairly stable, you may be able to find someone for relatively short periods of time -- an occasional afternoon or an evening -for little more than you'd pay a baby sitter. Full - time care, even if it is largely custodial, can cost much more unless you are prepared to accept a chronic turnover problem. If nursing is required, you may pay $300 per week and up. Or perhaps the patient could be placed for a few hours each day in one of the adult - day - care programs.

The patient's doctor usually can provide referrals. Groups concerned with specific illnesses, such as the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association and the American Cancer Society, run support groups that furnish information and advise for relatives and close friends of the ill.

The expenses can be ruinous. A survey of elderly patients suffering from dementia found that 1 and 4 spent most or all of their savings after becoming ill. A number of the caretakers surveyed and about 22 percent said they had even been forced to cut back sharply on their own expenses. Many eventually have to give up their jobs, while medical expenses continue to mount and daily living costs -- for such essentials as food and housing -- have to be paid. But help is available. Government agencies in 35 states provide some financial aid, ranging from $60 per month in Arizona to $800 or more in California.

Most of these subsidies go to families of patients who otherwise would probably be placed in institutions. The doctor or perhaps a support group should be able to advise. Care givers may also be eligible for a federal tax credit of up to $2,400 per year by filing Form 2441 with their 1040. Four states -- Arizona, Idaho, Iowa and Oregon -also provide tax breaks.

As you struggle to care for a sick relative, don't neglect yourself. Take time to see your own doctor and dentist. Don't become isolated. Keep in touch with friends. Go to an occasional entertainment. It will refresh and strengthen you, making you a better care giver. *** When you are buying a house, drawing up a will or preparing to file suit, a lawyer can be handy to have.

But rather than go through the hassle and expense of hiring one, many people do without. There is a third alternative: You can sign up for a free legal - services plan. Over 30 million Americans are already covered by such plans. Many small groups -- civic groups and homeowners' associations, and churches, for example -- are setting up their own. These plans typically provide free consulation with a lawyer, review of legal documents such as insurance policies, leases and consumer loans and follow - up letters or calls. For more complicated matters, such as drafting wills substantial discounts are offered.

Almost any organization with 150 or more members in a local area could offer such plans, usually at no charge.

The lawyers make their money from a steady supply of customers for their discounted services. ***

concerned with helping others in the community and lived with various families caring for the ill and doing household chores.

She was married to the late Joe L. Janae in May, 1928. She enjoyed her family and the many activities of sewing, gardening, cooking, canning, growing flowers and embroidery.

She and her husband opened their home to several teachers who lived with them during their teaching years in Snook.

Sister Janae attended the public school in Snook in her early years. She is a member of the Snook Brethren Church, where she attended services as long as she was able; also attended meetings of the Christian Sisters as often as possible.

She had five stepchildren, Edwin Joe, Albert, and Joe Janae who are deceased and Tracy Jakubik and Ella

Klecka, both of Snook.

She still lives in the same house that she and her husband lived in when they were first married, the same home of her husband's parents.

She has visitors everyday and is such a delightful person to visit with. She enjoys reading Czech papers and magazines, especially the Vestnik.

A Certificate of Appreciation from the Supreme Lodge was read by Lodge No. 9 President Richard Vajdak , A check representing the cash settlement option of her endowment policy upon reaching the age 96 was presented to her by President Vajdak and District I Director Andrew Vavra.

35 Elk Meeting Lodge

Our meeting was called to order November 8 at 3 p.m. All officers were present, except Vice President Richard Burney who was ill. After the

recitation of the pledge to the flag, the minutes of our last meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer's report was given.

The youth report was given by Youth Leader Louise Burney, stating that the youth were selling tickets on a Christmas centerpiece made by Henry Breitkreutz, Jr. They plan to sponsor a needy family and are asking all to bring canned goods for this project.

They also planned a cake walk on November 28th and December 5th.

She reported the District Ill youth plan to go to Six Flags on December 18 and then go to Lodge 84 for a lock - in, which I'm sure all the youth will enjoy.

Our guests were Gina Kubitza and Crystal Freeman; we hope they come, again, soon. Those having birthdays in November are Louise Burney, Albert Banik, Helen Dulock, Edna Tepe and Christopher Pavelka.

On the ill list were Vice President Richard Burney and Marvin Camp.

We wish them both well and a speedy recovery.

Lodge 47, Seaton Elects Officers and Delegates Dear Brothers and Sisters: The annual meeting of Lodge No. 47 was called to order by President Jerry Pechal on Sunday, November 1st at 1 p.m. Flag Bearers Amy Kohutek and Michelle Skrabanek brought in the flags and led the pledge to the U.S. flag. We remained standing for a moment of silence for District I Director Brother Ben Trcalek of Caldwell. May he rest in eternal peace and honor to his memory forever.

Deepest sympathy to his bereaving family and he shall be missed by all.

President Pechal welcomed everyone; 95 members and visitors Ann Balusek, Gertrude Kahlig, Miladie Kristinek, Freddie Schroeder and Mr. Harvey Polivka of Manitowoc, Wisconsin and his wife, Rosie, who is our member; so glad to see all of you at our meeting and make plans to come again.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, sales representatives and trustees. She also read the minutes of our October 4th meeting and they were approved as read. Correspondence included thank you cards from the Henry Kabella family for the wreath of red carnations sent to the funeral and for the memorial fund donation in his memory and from the Joe Simek family for the memorial.

We gained two members, Albert Wychopen and Juanita Wychopen transferred from Lodge No. 24, Cyclone. We welcome them to our lodge and they are very regular at our dances, already, and Brother Albert was also at the meeting. Welcome, again!

Those we knew of on the sick list were Sisters Mary Kohutek, Dorothy Morris, Gennie Tepera, Matilda Sefcik and Brother Henry Mares. Hope you are better and on the way to good health again.

The officers all gave good reports and so did the chairpersons. Brother Woodrow Marek gave the third quarterly audit report.

Sister Patsy Koslovsky gave the youth leader's report. The youth have been given parts for the Christmas program and will have a practice Thursday, November 19th. A new member joined and she is Shannon Pechal. The youth reporter will have the full report.

We assembled for our regular monthly meeting on Sunday, November 1, 1987 at 2 p.m. at our hall with President Bohac calling the meeting to order. The president then welcomed all members present and he asked the membership to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and then asked the members to remain standing for a moment of silence in honorable memory of our deceased members.

On Sunday, November 8 at 12 noon, our lodge members enjoyed a very delicious dinner of roast baked by Sister Mary Matcek and ham by Sister Mary Werner. We thank you and also all the good sisters for the various covered dishes of vegetables and pastry they brought. What a feast we had!

We were honored to have with us our District V S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes Director Louis Hanus, and Ernest Huff of Dallas with his daughter, Dorothy Sherrall of Mesquite, Texas.

Ernest Huff is a member of our lodge.

We were happy to see them and you all come again.

At 1 p.m. our meeting was called to order by President Charlie Matcek.

We were led in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag by Mary Matcek. We remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of our departed members, Albert Svec and Mildred Thompson. May they rest in peace.

Mary Werner read the minutes and also a thank you from the State School at Richmond for a donation from our Lodge No. 81. She also gave the financial report.

In new business it was decided to have goodie bags of candy, nuts and fruit, as usual, at the Christmas tree.

Apples and oranges are to be given to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville for Christmas.

For our Christmas dinner, turkey and dressing will be furnished by the lodge and ladies are to bring covered dishes of various vegetables and pastry. Dinner will start at 12:15 p.m. on December 13 and meeting at 1:30 p.m.

There were no reports from our lodge of the October meeting. Here are thd new members we accepted into our Lodge No. 80, namely, Jarret J. Arnold, Clinton C. Arnold, Evelyn Marie Lange and additional insurance was taken by Alan Bland.

There was no old business to be discussed further and the president asked for new business.

We will have our annual meeting on the first Sunday, December 6th; at that time we will elect our officers for 1988.

We are also entitled to elect four delegates to the State SPJST Convention to be held in June, 1988 so the lodge would like to see a large turnout at the annual meeting. A good lunch and drinks will be served after the meeting. Do come and elect the officers and delegates of your choice.

Lucky ticket winners at this meeting were Risa Pajestka, Frankie Pajestka, Harold Rohde, Glen Lathan and lsabell Kunz. The meeting adjourned at 3 p.m. with a happy hour following.

Before I close this meeting writeup, I would like to comment a few lines on the passing of a dear friend of mine and a lot of music - loving folks of Texas, Mr. Joe Patek who managed the Patek Orchestra of Shiner, Texas.

In 1949, when we built our first SPJST Hall here in Holland, it was the fourth Sunday in May, I was on the Entertainment Committee. I hired the Patek Orchestra to play for our dedication and dance that day, which was the first time the Patek Orchestra played that far north of Shiner and, after this date, they were playing for entertainment at Taylor, Seaton, Granger, Corn Hill, West, Linden Hall and the Dallas - Fort Worth area.

After this the Patek Orchestra had a standing order here at Holland to play for our annual picnic every fourth Sunday in May until they disbanded some years ago. I listened to Alfred Vrazel Polka Hour some two weeks ago and I thought it was nice of Alfred to dedicate a part of his program that Sunday to the memory of Joe Patek with some of the Patek Orchestra favorite tunes. I thought this was real nice of Alfred. I would have liked to have gone to his funeral, but, due to the illness of my wife, I could not go.

History Of Youth Directors Of Lodge 88 1-Iouston, 1933-1960

Lodge 88, Houston Czech Day Held Oct. 25

[Delivered by Sister Della Kadlecek at Lodge 88's 50th Anniversary] We are gathered here today to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Lodge 88 and pay our respects to those pioneers who had the fortitude and perserverance to lay the foundation for this lodge of which we are proud. Let us hope that 50 years hence there will be others to pay tribute to us and, therefore, we must call upon our youth to propogate this goal. I am proud to inform you that it was Lodge 66 which sponsored the first youth club of the SPJST and it was founded in September of 1933 and organized in December of the same year. Brother A.A. Lesikar was elected the first president and, under his administration, the club sponsored dances, parties and other social activities.

The following year, 1934, Brother Alvin Hosek was elected youth club president. The club gained in membership and sponsored more dances and fund - raising activities and, from the financial gains, the club enjoyed swimming and skating parties and other social activities. Brother Hosek was replaced as president by Brother Louis Rulik in 1938 and in 1939 war clouds hung over Europe.

(You will recall that Czechoslovakia was conquered in 1939.) It was then that the youth club foresaw the need of support of a suffering people and sponsored a dance, the proceeds of which were donated to the Czech Red Cross in England. This, Brothers and Sisters, is Humanity, Brotherhood and Fraternalism. In 1941, Brother Rulik announced that he is moving to California and Brother A.C. Motl was elected president. It was also in 1941 which many of the members were called to the service of their country and the youth club was disbanded. The treasury of the club was given to Lodge 88.

The youth club was reorganized in 1952 under the sponsorship of the State Youth Counselor of SPJST, Sister Birdie Hilsher. Five youth directors were named for Lodge 88: Sister Louise Kadlecek and Sister Marie Rezek were in charge of the teenage group. Sister Helen Schnell was in charge of the preteen age group and Sister Estelle Kelly and Sister Della Kadlecek were in charge of the tiny tots' group, ages from 1 to 6. Singing and dancing classes were sponsored and the enrollment consisted of 126 members. Programs were presented on Mother's and Father's Day as well as Easter and Christmas. In 1953, baseball and volleyball games were played in competition with other lodge youth clubs.

In 1956, the entire youth group was consolidated into the present youth club under the sponsorship of Sisters Estelle Kelly, Maxine Sefcik and Della Kadlecek. Fred C. Burl was elected the first youth club president of this newly founded group. Robert Hilsher followed Fred Buri as president and the present youth president is Margaret Ann Rezek.

For the youth directors and each and every member of the youth club, I thank you.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Meeting Dear Members and Friends: On Sunday, November 8, President Albert Kubala opened our November meeting one hour earlier because of election of officers of Lodge No. 92 and election of delegates and alternates to the next convention. When we mention. November, it is strange but one seems to remember the pungent smell of burning leaves, the aroma of baking turkey and bayberry candles, and we won't be having another monthly meeting until after Christmas because of the Four - Lodge Christmas Party which will be held at Burleson Lodge No. 180 on Sunday, December 13 this year. Dinner will be served at noon followed by festivities until 7 p.m.

Our own Christmas, Santa, and Children's Program Party will be on December 20 at 6 p.m. The youth leader asks that the children, who participate in the program, please arrive at 5 p.m., and you dear ladies are, again, asked to bring those homemade cookies to accompany the coffee and traditional punch. Santa will present the gifts and fruit and nut packages from the lodge.

Martha Durham reported sending 17 senior citizen birthday cards and also get well cards to Mary Ann Kozel, Juanita Johnnie and Elmer Howard.

Nancy Paprskar will undergo a cornea transplant soon. On November 28, Joyce and Frankie Tesar will observe their 23rd wedding anniversary and on December 11 a 4th anniversary will be marked by Sherry and Mike Watkins.

A decision was made to grant donations for 1987 to S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes No. I and II, also to the Star Telegram Goodfellow's, Sansom Park Volunteer Fire Department, Lake Worth Volunteer Fire Department, Child Abuse Prevention _ Program, Czech Chair at the University of Texas, the SPJST Scholarship Program, and the Lodge 92 Youth Club.

The aforementioned election resulted in the following choices: President -- Albert Kubala Vice President -- John Paprskar Secretary -- Christine Zich Treasurer -- Rose Jaworski Fraternal Coordinator -- Evelyn Spacek Our flag bearer is John Eric Paprskar and Gordon Hubenak is, once again, the youth leader.

Our Board of Trustees consists of Al Kercho, Albert Kubala, John Paprskar, Rose Jaworski and Kenneth Krivanek.

During the adult meeting, the youth club constructed Christmas door decorations and Gordon announced that they would go to Holiday Park at Six Flags on Friday, December 18th.

They will meet at the park at 6:30 p.m.

The last business of the meeting was a presentation of a plaque to Carl Zich who was named "Fraternalist of the Year." He was both surprised and grateful. This token was not easily earned and the decision was made because of the volume of fraternal work that Carl does.

Perhaps we will send a December report although there will be no scheduled meeting. If not, it's Adios, I won't be writing for 1988 I have enjoyed doing so, and now send my best regards to EVERYONE for a blessed New Year.

Dear SPJST Members: The first annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival is history, but plans are underway for the second festival which

8/VESTNiK—Wednesday, November 18, 1987 will be the weekend of November 5 and 6, 1988. There was a good crowd although there was a threat of rain on that weekend. Everyone enjoyed the performance of the Czech Singers and Dancers from Louisiana, Lodge 88, Gulf Coast Singers of El Campo, and the Galveston County Singers, also the two polka bands who kept everyone dancing and listening to good Czech music.

Lodge No. 172 would like to thank the visitors and workers for a wonderful weekend. We hope to provide pictures for the Vestnik soon.

I would like to remind all Loage 172 members of our annual meeting to be held December 16 instead of the 4th Wednesday of December (the normal meeting). The election of officers for 1988 will be held and it is important for everyone to attend and make your choice of officers.

On Saturday, December 19, we will celebrate our Christmas dinner and dance. The lodge will provide the meats and drinks and each member or family is asked to bring a canned vegetable dish or pastry. Lodge 172 was very proud to host the annual meeting of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas. This was a statewide meeting on Saturday, November 7 and the election of new officers. We were happy to see one of our members, Brother Raymond Skrabanek elected president for the new term. Also in attendance for the meeting and the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) were Albert Blaha, Calvin Chervenka, Louis Hanus, Joseph Skrivanek and Sid Pokladnik. We were specially happy to see Sid from the Supreme Lodge and show him our lodge. Do come back, again.

I want to thank the Supreme Lodge and Jim Wiest for his part in setting up a sales office and mini - museum for the Gulf Coast Czech Festival. Jim did not have much to enjoy himself; he was a busy man for two days. Thanks again and the Dance Committee is taking reservations for New Year Eve's dance. No reservations after December 6, so plan to purchase tickets as soon as you can; this will be another sellout and we have the South Texas Bohemian Cowboys playing until 2 in the morning.

The general meeting of Lodge 187 was held on October 26th. During the meeting President Gene Landry opened the floor for nominations for both officers and members of the Board of Trustees. Members nominated to fill the various positions include: President -- Gene Landry Vice President -- Albert Lange Treasurer -- Rubie Volek and Victor Kunz Secretary -- Larry A. Rohlack Board Members -- James Stacey, David (Red) Oman, John Keltgen and Victor Kunz Youth Leader -- Sharon Holman Elections will be held at the November 22 general meeting. The meeting is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. and will be followed by a covered dish meal. All members are encouraged to come out and vote and enjoy themselves.

Gene Landry informed the members at the general meeting that Rubie Volek had recently exceeded the one million dollar mark in insurance sales.

The members of Lodge 187 voted to postpone this year's Christmas Party until January. The postponement was made due to the busy schedule everyone has in December. More news about the late Christmas Party will be forthcoming.

December 6-we will have our lodge meeting and then youth meeting including election of officers and our Christmas Party with Santa Claus, exchange gifts, a Christmas Program and supper. I would like for all the youth members who paid dues to be in the Christmas Program because I need all of you and the parents. We started practicing on November 13, so please come and help us because we need all of you.

On December 19 the RVOS asked the youth club to have their Christmas Program for their Christmas Party.

Dear Readers, The November 3, 1987 meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Janet Macek.

Zachary Schneider and David Macek led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

The roll was called by Secretary Susan Holtman. There were 15 members and 2 adults present. Guests introduced were Mark Macek and Chad Bruggman.

The minutes were read and approved. The treasurer's report was given and the balance was $209.57.

Our fall fund - raiser was a barbecue chicken dinner on November 8 which was a great success. Thanks to everyone who helped out.

Our Youth Leader Rose Harvell reported to us about visiting the nursing home on November 15 to bring the patients the crafts we made for them. We also will be going caroling to the nursing home on December 6 and December 7 we will have a float in the Christmas Parade in Temple.

We would like to thank the mother lodge bingo for donating $200 to our club.

Our meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m. "Happy Birthday" to Jason Harvell on November 16th.

The next meeting will be on December 6 before we go caroling at 2 P.m.

Craft project for November meeting of Lodge 30 in Taiton.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club Dear Vestnik Readers, The Lodge No. 30 Youth Club meeting was held on November 1 at the Taiton Community Center with President Marcy Dorotik presiding.

Secretary Jennifer Dluhos read the minutes and Linda Treumer and Lenice Kaspar gave their treasury reports.

The District VI social at Lodge No. 40 in Hillje was discussed and money was given to the members who performed.

The Christmas Party was also discussed and it was decided to have a Christmas dinner and party along with the adult lodge on Sunday, December 6 at the Taiton Community Center. It will be a catered meal. The members are asked to bring a dessert. Our meeting will be held at 2:30 p.m.

A workshop will be held on November 16 after school at Mrs. Dorotik's house.

A trophy case was discussed and it was decided to purchase another trophy case.

For the craft project for November, members were asked to make a turkey.

66 YC Halloween Party Lodge

Dear Youth Members, On October 23, we had our Halloween Party. There were 19 youth, 5 visitors and 15 adults present.

We all had a great time.

We started off with a costume contest. Winners in the boys' group were Pat Wright, Chris Pavlicek and Joy Wills. Winners in the girls' group were Denise Kofnovec, Candace Pavlicek and Angela Kubala. The Junior winners were Shane Pruitt, Sherri Kofnovec and Amanda Nesloney. Our judges were Dr. Milan Gellner and his wife Maria Gellner; they were from Czechoslovakia and spoke no English. Our other judges were Dorothy Moore and Henrietta Cervenka.

We had a pinata full of candy that we all enjoyed very much. I want to thank Joe Pruitt and Richard Pruitt for their help. We then had a wiener roast that was taken care of by Paul Nesloney.

After we ate, we went on a hayride and we all enjoyed this very much. I want to thank Charlie and Irene Mueller for the trailer and hay.

We finished our party off with an apple dunking. This was fun with everybody getting their apple and wet, too.

We had a great party and everyone enjoyed it very much. I want to thank everyone who had a part in making it a success.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 155 on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed brother ALBERT WILLIAM HEINE, who passed away Friday, August 21, 1987 at the Retirement and Nursing Center in Austin. He was 80 years old.

Brother Heine was born December 4, 1906 in Rowena, Texas. His family moved to Travis County soon after his birth. He married Louise Klaus in 1927. They settled in the Manor area where he farmed. Later they moved to Austin in 1956. He worked for the University of Texas until he retired in 1972. He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church and the SPJST Lodge No. 155 in Austin.

He is survived by his wife, Louise Heine; daughter, Laverne Hejl; son in - law, John Hejl; two granddaughters, Janet Hejl and Diane Hejl, all of Austin; brother, Walter Heine of Fort Worth; two sisters, Elsie Neidig of Elgin and Clara Ponder of Austin.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

Monday, August 24 at Weed - Corley Funeral Home in Austin with Rev. Dean Busboom and Rev. Alvin Emerson officiating. Burial was in Austin Memorial Park Cemetery.

of Waco, Texas who died Wednesday, October 21, 1987 at the age of 90 years.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 22nd at Wilkerson - Hatch Funeral Chapel. Mass was offered on Friday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waco with Monsignor Ed Rabroker, Monsignor Mark Deering, Monsignor Frank Miller and Father Angelo Bertini as celebrants. Burial took place in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Brother John is survived by his three sons, John C. Simcik, Ernest R. Simcik and Carroll R. Simcik of Waco; 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Brother John founded his own plumbing business in 1930 and which his sons are now running. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, a past president of Lodge No. 66 and an SPJST member since July 1914.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, in August 1987.

Brother Dur was a retired real estate broker, a veteran of U.S. Army services, World War I, a member of All Saints Catholic Church and SPJST Lodge 154 since 1945.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Verna Josephine Dur. He is survived by a son, Virgil L.; daughter, Katherine; grandchildren, Nancy, Veronica, Deborah, Eric, Lee, Michael Henry and Suzette Marie; 8 great grandchildren; brothers, Herman and Joe Dur; sisters, Verna, Louise, Helen and Janie.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. Thursday at All Saints Catholic Church. Interment was in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Arrangements were by Thompson's Harveson and Cole, Inc. May he rest in eternal peace.

ALBERT HENRY DUR, who passed away Monday, October 26 at the age of 93 years.

He was a native of Bremond, Texas and a resident of Fort Worth for more than 70 years.

Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 32, Victoria on behalf of the officers and the entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of FRANK A. ROKYTA, who passed away Monday evening, October 26, 1987 at his former residence. Brother Rokyta was born in Calhoun County on March 22, 1921 to Frank J. and Delfie Holy Rokyta. A resident to Victoria since 1961, he formerly resided in Houston. He was a WW II veteran and a retired employee of the Victoria Machine Works. He was a member of the Calhoun County VFW Post 4403. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 32 and the Victoria Czech Singers.

A prayer service was held at 7:30 p.m. on October 28 at the Funeral Home.

Services were conducted by the Rosewood Funeral Chapel and burial was in the Colonial Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Richard Mayerhoff officiating.

Pallbearers were Wayne and L.J. Rokyta, Robert and Gary Valchar, Jerry Lange and William Neiser.

Danny Rokyta was an honorary pallbearer.

Brother Rokyta is survived by three daughters, Ruby Mae Wilson of Conroe, Gloria McCormick of Victoria, Marion Noska of Houston; two sons, Marvin Rokyta of Spring, Franklin Rokyta of Victoria; a sister, Elsie Lange of Telferner; two brothers, Emil and Leo Rokyta of Port Lavaca; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Ruby Rokyta on April 29, 1987.

Golden Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Joseph Stang of Houston, Texas, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on October 18, 1987, with an open house buffet reception.

The reception was hosted by their daughter and son - in - law, Betty and Gene Dobesh; and two grandchildren, Debby and Craig Dobesh at their home.

Willie Mae, formerly a Jalufka, came from Engle and Edward came

from Moravia. Edward is a retired employee of Reed Roller Bit Company in Houston. Both are active members of SPJST Lodge No. 88 and Willie Mae is a member of the Birthday Club Sisters.

Many friends and relatives helped them celebrate their golden wedding anniversary.

Gerty Theresa Cori nee Radnitz (Radnicka) [1896 -1957) This commendatory article was written to introduce to the Czech American readers Bohemia born Dr. Gerty T. Cori nee Radnitz, the first American woman to receive a Nobel Prize in Medical Sciences. --- Nobel Prizes, as we know them today, were established by the will of munitions magnate Alfred B. Nobel for the encouragement of persons who work for the interest of humanity. Nobel Prizes are awarded annually in various fields, as for example in peace, literature or medicine. Swedish philanthropist Alfred B. Nobel died in 1896, the same year Gerty Theresa Radnitz (Radnicka) was born on August 15th in Praha (Prague) in our old country. --- For the sake of simplicity and uniformity I will from now on use only the first name and married name of our Nobel Prize winner through this eulogical write up.

--- Although Gerty Cori was born in Prague, she spent her childhood and teenage years v Severozapadnich Cechach (in Northwestern Bohemia).

She was educated in the Lycee type of school for girls and later graduated from Gymnasium in 1914 at Mein, known also at that time by its German _lame Tetschen. TURKEY SAFETY A CONCERN A food safety expert with TAMU Extension Agricultural System's Service cautions against letting convenience, lack of time or a favorite family recipe get in the way of following safe food handling practices this Thanksgiving.

Because a large frozen turkey can take several days to defrost in the refrigerator, people start to take short - cuts like putting the bird on the kitchen counter to thaw, explains Marilyn Haggard. This practice allows salmonella bacteria to flourish.

The only safe way to thaw a turkey in a hurry is to use microwave oven or to thaw in cool water in the sink, changing the water every 30 minutes.

If you don't want to bother with thawing, you would be better off buying a fresh turkey which can br kept refrigerated for 1 to 2 days before cooking.

According to the specialist, both frozen and fresh turkeys should be washed inside and out in cool water and patted dry with a paper towel before stuffing and cooking.

Then wash in hot soapy water all cutting boards, pans and utensils that have come in contact with the raw turkey.

It might seem like a convenience to stuff the turkey in advance, but it could be dangerous, Haggard says.

When a turkey is stuffed it creates ideal conditions for the growth of bacteria in the cavity. In a home refrigerator, it's very difficult to keep the stuffing inside a pre - stuffed turkey below 40 degrees F, which is cold enough to keep most bacteria from growing.

For that reason, she says, the U.S. Department of Agriculture advises

Most products in food stores have dates and handling directions on them, even though manufacturers are not required to put this information on packaging.

The date stamped on product packages can indicate product freshness and serve as a guide to safe storage time. if you know how to use it, says Marilyn Haggards, A TAMU nutrition specialist.

She explains that the "sell - by" date is the last day the product should be sold, the "use - by" date indicates how long the product will retain top eating quality after purchase, and the "expiration date" tells the last day the food should be eaten or used.

Reading handling directions can also help you make sure food remains safe to eat, says the specialist.

All perishable products must give handling instructions, such as "keep frozen" or "keep refrigerated." Some meat and poultry products may be labeled "ready - to - eat" or "fully cooked," which means no further cooking is necessary.

The specialist advises checking the labels of aseptically packaged products, since many will require refrigeration after opening.

Use of capital letters: There is a difference in the usage of capital letters in Czech and English. Ex.: Yesterday was Wednesday, July 14, 1968.
