Brother John Hranicky, 96, Outlives His Insurance Policy Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hranicky hosted an open house for his father, John Hranicky, Sunday, October 18, 1987.

The occasion which marked the 96th birthday of John Hranicky was held in the Jennie Hranicky memorial room in Orange Grove.

Approximately 73 friends and relatives were in attendance.

During the afternoon, a brief ceremon y was conducted by Mrs. Thelma Hrncir, District VII director of the SPJST, who presented the honoree with a certificate from the Supreme

Lodge of the SPJST indicating that he had outlived his policy, along with a check for the face value of the policy.

A number of members of Mr. Hranicky's lodge in Robstown were also in attendance.

John Hranicky became a member of Lodge Texassti bratfi (Texas Brothers) at Yorktown, Texas in 1911. The Hranicky family moved to Orange Grove in 1927. Some years after moving to Orange Grove, his membership NN as transferred to Lodge (Con't on Page 6)

SPJST Member Wins First Place In Essay Writing Contest

Bruce Skrabanek, the son of Milton John and Barbara Skrabanek of Snook, and a member of Lodge 9, Snook, has been named winner of the U.S. Constitution Bicentennial Writing Contest sponsored by the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA).

Skrabanek read his winning essay "How the Constitution Promotes Equal Protection Under the Law," to the General Assembl y of the NFCA meeting in Chicago, Illinois, where he also received a $1,000 prize for winning the contest.

To All Our SPJST Lodges: Each year the National Fraternal Congress of America issues a request for information on the Fraternal Activities and Expenditures of its member - society local units.

Distribution of the Questionnaire will be made to member - society secretaries soon. This information is very important to the NFCA, its Law Committee and the Fraternal Benefit System. With your help we can meet the challenge to reach our goal for 100 percent participation. Be sure your lodge sends your Fraternal Activities and Expenditures to the SPJST Supreme Lodge, PO Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503. *** This week's issue includes the very good and welcome information and pictures of Brother John Hranicky who has outlived his acturial amount of his insurance certificate at age 96; what a wonderful age and he joins the ranks of what so many of our members who have done the same in the past. This writer has known Brother Hranicky for 40 years in the SPJST Convention he attended and during his time as director in District VII and on the SPJST Publication Committee. In all these associations, he has proved himself as a very sound, sensible, fraternal, benevolent member in his deliberations and decisions which were always for the benefit of our entire Society; he never allowed his personal views and feelings to interfere with his ultimate judgment.

It has been activities of a free minded group of deliberate - thinking members (both men and women) like Brother Hranicky which have guided our Society for the better and sound far - reaching goals which- we as a fraternal society have reached and are still heading forward toward which we can celebrate, less than ten years from now, at the time of our 100th anniversary.

Members such as Brother Hranicky are few and far between, especially who will live as long as he has and yet be interested in the affairs of our Order. Certainly this editor speaks for all members of our SPJST by stating that the most fraternal, sincere and heartfelt wishes for a healthy, happy future are being sent with these lines. *** In the October 28 issue on page 7 of our Vestnik is the itinerary of group of officials and farmers from Slusovice Cooperative Farm in Czechoslovakia on tour in Texas (columns 3 and 4 on the- page). Some members and/or readers may wish to read and then plan to visit with them at some location. ** When you purchase a home, you expect to get clear title, but it doen't always work out that way. A previous owner may have agreed to a road easement across the front yard, or a lien may have been placed against the property because of bad debts. Those

are the kinds of nasty surprises that title insurance is designed to prevent.

Your lender will, of course, require you to purchase title insurance, but that policy protects only the bank. To safeguard your investment, consider signing up for owner's title insurance.

Without it, if someone asserts a prior claim to your property, the lender would get the money back, but you could lose every cent you've paid.

Owner's coverage isn't cheap, but you can save money by getting it at the same time you buy the lender's policy.

At one out - of - state title agency, for example, premiums for a $150,000 house could cost $312 for the lender and $425 for the owner -- or as much as $737 if bought separately.

Purchased together, the two premiums would cost only $435. Always ask if you qualify for a reissue rate, a discount of up to 40 percent that's available in most states when the seller has carried an owner's policy for a set period of time, say, five or 10 years.

You will probably have to ask; title companies rarely volunteer discounts. *** In November some lodges will be holding their annual meetings including election of delegates for our XXVth SPJST Convention (June 19 23, 1988) in Temple. This editor wishes to caution members who will be eligible to run for delegates that they be certain each one has attended the majority of the lodge meetings and is in good standing (up - to - date premiums and/or local lodge dues paid).

Another thing this editor wishes to caution the delegates about is whenever you are elected, study your SPJST Bylaws Book (if you don't have one, obtain one from your- local lodge), also read any proposed new or revised bylaw(s) by the SPJST Bylaws' Committee for publication, because, this will be serious business for the future SPJST's operation and the Society depends (democratic association) on the delegates representing their lodge to take action on what should or should not be in the SPJST Bylaws; with the constant government and/or competition changes, we must keep abreast of the yearly operation which is placed in the trust of our SPJST Officers, District Directors and District Committees. We hope most of the lodges met their quota to elect the number of delegates; unfortunately, there were some lodges in District III that didn't meet their quota.

Remember, what is in the best interest of our SPJST Society should be the uppermost thought in everyone's mind!

The SPJST Bylaws, Finance and Insurance Committees are scheduled to meet in January 1988 and the Publication Committee is scheduled to meet in February. Dates to be published. *** Some people are understandably infuriated -- and some are embarrassed -- by vulgar advertisements that arrive unsolicited in the mail. But you can stop such material from being delivered simply by filling out a form at your local post office. That is one of many tidbits from the latest edition of "A Consumer's Directory of Postal Services and Products." This unpaid 34 - page booklet provides a useful overview of the. mails. It explains the various levels of services which now range from first to fourth class. The speediest, of course, is Express Mail Next Day Service for overnight delivery of letters and packages. The booklet is available free at your local post office.

During Mr. Hranicky's 76 years as a member, he has served in many capacities. He served as secretary of Lodge No. 152 for many years. He attended six SPJST Conventions, served two terms on the SPJST Publication Committee and served as District VII substitute director for 8 months following the incapacity of Director Joe Koliha.

Mr. Hranicky continues to live on his farm which has been his home for over 50 years. He has been interested in the affairs of the community and the world. His first task each morning is to read the daily paper. He continues to drive his car and makes a trip or two to town each day.

His many friends wish him continued health and hope that he enjoys many more birthdays.

Due to the absence of President Kessel, Vice President Leslie Gustafson opened the meeting.

Pledge of Allegiance was led by Brother Roy Simank.

The minutes from the previous meeting were approved as read.

Under old business, a special thanks go to Ervin Becker who was in charge of frying fish and trimmings for our fish fry held on October 16th. A nice crowd was had and everyone enjoyed the food and fellowship.

New Business: Sister Gladys Mogonye was selected as the "Fraternalist of the Year" for Lodge 18. All of those countless hours of work finally paid off for her.

Congratulations, Gladys, you certainly earned it.

Dear Readers: Our November meeting was called to order by _President Barbara Macek with all officers present.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flag Bearers Steve Bruggman and Michael Harvell. Members also stood for a moment of silent respect for our deceased members.

No one was listed on the sick list, so I am assuming everyone is in good health this month.

The minutes of our last meeting were read and approved with a few minor corrections. Reports were given by the chairmen of various committees and all were pretty good reports.

Congratulations are in order for Jerry Zavodny who was nominated for "Fraternalist of the Year" representing Lodge No. 24. Jerry was picked on the basis that he is one of the oldest and very active members of our lodge. I am not picking on your age, Jerry, but we all hope we can be as active as you are when we get your age.

We really appreciate all you do-again congratulations and good luck!

Those celebrating birthdays this month are Linda Smetanka, Jerry Zavodny, Jerry Cabla and Lynn Tschoerner. We hope you all have a wonderful day. Milton and Martha Zavodny are celebrating a wedding anniversary this month.

The membership thanked the following for decorating the hall for our Halloween dance: Jerry and LaVerne Cabla, Barbara and Robert Macek, Margaret Mikeska and Arleen Tschoerner. The costume dance turned out very well; we had a lot of people participating with some well - designed and original outfits. Also thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Bartek and their friends for being the judges; they did a fine job; thanks again.

The bingo chairmen asked that more people participate in bingo, we need more workers. The more people, the less you have to work; it really has been fun. If you're interested, come out because you're always welcome any time.

The youth club report was given by Youth Leader Rose Harvell. She thanked the Bingo Committee for donating $200 for the club's activities.

On November 15, the youth will be visiting the local nursing homes in Temple and bring the senior citizens Thanksgiving decorations. The youth will also draw names for Christmas that day, so be sure you are there or have someone put your name in the pot. On December 6 they will be singing carols at the nursing homes and December 7, the youth will be in the Temple Christmas Parade. Please contact Rose Harvell for times and places they will meet.

Our Christmas Party is scheduled for Sunday, December 13 with happy hour starting at 3 p.m., youth club program at approximately 4 p.m. followed by the meal at 5 p.m. Dinner will consist of turkey and dressing and all the trimmings that each member is asked to bring, so get together your favorite salads and desserts. The youth will prepare fruit bags this year. We hope to see several of our long lost members on that day, so plan on coming out for a fun afternoon.

New Year's Eve will be here soon; we will be having the New Sterling Country playing. Bernise Sebek and Louise Zavodny are in charge of the reservations; you need to call them at 985 - 2556 or go by Red Ranger Grocery. If you want to get your ticket

in advance you need to pay before December 30, if they do not receive your money they will not hold your seat. The band is very good so make plans on having a great time and ring in the new year with us at Flag Hall.

At last month's meeting the R&R Committee and Salary Committee gave their reports. Salary Committee requested the salaries stay the same; they passed on the vote; the R&R Committee proposed two changes, but the members_ voted to keep them as they are. No changes.

Well, it was election time again. I have to say I was really disappointed in a lot of our members; short of saying, you will do it, we had no one who wanted to participate. It's really amazing how much we know when we're sitting on the sidelines; we know how to do everybody's job and more often better than they do!

But ask them to do the job, well, that's another story about a mile long.

My favorite line is: "I work;" well, don't we all? I hope everyone supports our new officers and work with them; it's hard to do it alone. Dear Members and Friends: Lodge 180 meeting was held on October 20th at 7:30 p.m. with our President Louis Grochoske leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance and all present remained standing for a moment of silence for our departed members and friends.

The September meeting minutes were read by our Secretary Frances Simrnank and the minutes were approved as read.

All other reports were approved. A letter from the SL headquarters was read informing the members as to how to select the delegates to go to the SPJST Convention to be held in 1988 in Temple.

I heard that Mrs. Mark Doutlick is now in a rest home, and we hope sheds feeling much better; also, we hope Joyce Russell is feeling better. I hear she stepped into a hole and damaged her foot and now is wearing a cast on her foot. Get well, soon, Joyce.

Congratulations to Marie Hampton; she has a new grandbaby. We also send our best wishes to Mike and Ann Sammet; they got married last month.

Ann is the daughter of Joe and Estelle Hurtik. We wish you many happy years!

We, the members and friends, wish to thank Frank and Jo Prochaska for a lovely 40th wedding anniversary party held at Lodge 154. Everyone had a great time and certainly there was plenty of good food plus good music to dance to; we really enjoyed it and all I can say -- a party well done, and many more happy years! We also send our best wishes to George and Kiddy Rippin on their 41st anniversary and I hear they are going to celebrate with a cruise to Jamaica. Have a good trip.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II Tony Reyes, Theresia Walger and Marion Brockway are the new residents to join the group at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No 11 in October, and staff -- Laverne Battles (NA), Patricia Henke (LVN) and Christine Watson (NA).

We regret the death of Lynos Honeycutt, Hulda Richter and Betty Wruck. They will be missed by our staff and other residents.

Lillie Korenek has returned home in Wallis. We wish her the best of luck.

The money donated by SPJST Lodge No. 81, at their request, was used for the benefit of the residents.

The senior citizen social held at the Methodist Church was attended and enjoyed by Gladys Hix, Annie Stavinoha, Helen Valcik and Rosie Brenner.

Every Monday morning, Olie Eixman, Elverna Graeber, Nona Eixman, Joy Hurta, Ella Eisman and Merylyn Leus come to have a sing - a long. The residents greatly appreciate the singing.

Every Thursday afternoon, Elton Tielke and Albin Tielke, Jr. come to have sing - a - long. Everyone enjoys the old time songs.

Monday afternoon, October 5 and 19, Betty Seiler came from the Library to show movies. The residents enjoyed the movies and popcorn.

Thursday afternoon, October 8, residents James Little, Ludvig Dobesh, Helen Valcik, Annie Stavinoha, Gladys Hix, Annabelle Schoppe, Edmund Brandi, Roy Lee Schroeder, Rosie Brenner, Pearle Herschap and Moody Flagg and Paul Legendre, volunteer and Martha Marx, SAD, went to the Brazos Bend State Park and had a wiener roast. Everyone reported a good time.

Tuesday evening, October 13 and 27, the KCs came to play bingo with the residents. The residents reported a fine time.

Thursday morning, October 15, the Assembly of God women from Rosenberg came to visit and sing with the residents. In the afternoon Garland Hurtye and Mary Goffinet with the Fort Bend Humane Society brought dogs for therapy for the residents.

Thursday evening, October 29, Larry Ognoski, Fred Gerke and George Lolley provided music and singing for the residents. Everyone had a great time. Families and friends are invited to attend.

Friday morning, October 30, the Good Beginning Day Care children came to trick or treat and sang to the residents. In the afternoon, a Special Place Day Care children came to trick or treat and sang to the residents.

Visiting Annie Zich were her son, John from Detroit, Michigan and daughter, Leona Knight from Corpus Christi, Texas.

Happy Birthdays for the month of October are residents Janie Dvorak, Minnie Graeber, Moody Flagg, Johanna Jacobson, Richard Reininger, Martha Stuchly, Elva Muehibrad and also staff -- Grace Loesch, Billie McNeal and Tina Dunn.

A combination Birthday and Halloween Party which was held Friday, October 30 included singing "Happy Birthday" to the residents. A contest of staff and some residents dressing in Halloween costumes was judged. Brother John Hranicky of Lodge 117 - 96th birthday which was held at the Orange Crate in Orange Grove. The birthday activities took place October 18th.

He received the check and letter of appreciation from District VII Director Thelma Hrncir on behalf of the SPJST Society.

Lodge 117, Robstown Youth Club Dear Readers, The Robstown Youth Club has been kept busy throughout September and October.

September 5th -- Movie trip, followed by an eat out at Pizza Inn September 9th -- A group of eleven persons went to the "Ice Capades" at Memorial Coliseum September 12th -- Film Festival at Cine 6 September 19th -- Meeting September 26th -- Game Party at the Scout Hut September 27th -- A day filled with excitement by attending the Bayfest '87. There we saw a magician, Gypsy dancing, clowns, exhibits of all descriptions, sea rescues by a helicopter and plenty of ethnic food.

October was also a busy month. On the 3rd we went bowling and ate out.

October 10th -- Circus time. This circus is sponsored by the Shriners October 17th -- Regular meeting was held with twelve members present and two guests. After the meeting, seven members and one guest delivered cakes and cookies to Westwood Manor Nursing Home.

October 18th -- I attended the 96th Birthday Party for Brother John Hranicky in Orange Grove October 25th -- District VII Meeting and Family Day at Lodge No. 107 in Floresville October 30th -- The youth visited a haunted house at P.J.'s Bowling October 31st -- Halloween Party was held at the Scout Hut November will also be a busy month. Charity projects will be food basket, gifts and making assorted Christmas wreaths. These will be distributed to nursing homes.

Christmas is nearing and many activities will be held. For now, this is all I have to report.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club Dear Members: The meeting of Lodge No. 47 Youth Club was brought to order by President Michael Morris. We had 33 members present and have one new member, Shannon Pechal.

Our fund - raiser was selling Tom Watt's products. All orders need to be turned in to Patsy.

Our social for November is a hayride.

We talked about the Christmas Program and were given our parts to memorize. We will have a practice on November 19th. We also drew for Christmas gifts.

The meeting was adjourned by Michael Morris.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge F.B. Zdrubek No. 112, Guy, Texas on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our most sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister DELLA. LEE FOJTIK, age 74, who passed away on Friday, September 18, 1987 at her residence in Brazoria, Texas where she had been a resident for 18 months. She had been a resident of Guy for many years.

Wednesday, November 11, 1987-VESTNIK/11 Funeral services for Sister Fojtik were held on Sunday, September 20 at the Garmany and Carden Chapel in Needville, Texas. Officiating at the services was Rev. Richard Avery.

Burial was in the Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Survivors include her brother, Elmo Stacy of Ingleside; a niece, Elizabeth Kemp, also of Ingleside; a nephew, Joe Stacy of Rosenberg; an adopted son, Lester Sweeny of Brazoria; two stepsons, Bill Fojtik of Guy and Joe Fojtik of Wharton, and several grandchildren.

Services were under the direction of Garmany and Carden Funeral Directors in Needville, Texas.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge Rozkvet No. 172, Pasadena on behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother ADOLPH JOSEPH DUSEK, who passed away Tuesday morning, September 22, 1987 at St. Mary's Hospital, Galveston, Texas at the age of 78.

Brother Dusek was born November 11, 1908 in Galveston. In his youth he was interested in athletics, and was a member of the Little. Hurricane Football Team and also coached the Islandettes, a girls' softball team, and was active in the Beseda and Sokol groups.

Brother Dusek retired from the A.T. & F.F. Railroad Company on August 1, 1970, after 45 years of service.

When the Galveston office was closed, he served in the Topeka office for 4 years and 9 months prior to his retirement. He was a director and past president of the Board of Directors of the Santa Fe Employees Credit Union.

He became a member of Lodge Rozkvet No. 62, Galveston, in April 1925, and served as president of same for many years, being re - elected time and time again.

During World War II, he served in the United States Army Air Corps in the China, Burma and India Theater for four years. He was also a member of Leggs of the Women's Marine Corps, his wife having served in the Marines.

He was a member of Lodge Rozkvet No. 172, Pasadena, a member of Msgr. Kirwin Council No. 78.7 and Msgr. Kirwin Assembly of the Knights of Columbus, and member of St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica.

He was preceded in death by his father Adolf Dusek who was a charter member of Lodge Rozkvet No. 62, and his mother Peregrina Marek Dusek who passed away at the age of 99, having attained her acturial age three years prior in 1977.

Brother Dusek was married to Mildred 0. Rourke on August 16, 1952, and they recently celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary.

Rosary was recited at 6 p.m.

Wednesday, September 23, led by Deacon W.J. Bobb, at the Malloy & Son Funeral Home.

Christian Mass of the Resurrection was offered by Msgr. C.J. _Alleman and Father Paul Chovanec at St. Mary!s Cathedral Basilica at

Thursday, September 24th. Father Chovanec gave the eulogy and concluded the Mass with a Czech prayer. Members. of Msgr. Kirwin Assembly of the Knights of Columbus served as Honor Guards.

Interment was at 11 a.m. Friday morning, September 25 at Houston National Cemetery. Catholic services were offered by Rev. Walter W. Sheffield. Military _ rites were conducted by the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Rourke Dusek of _Galveston; three sisters, Annie Ruth Kennedy of Dallas, Mary Cordray and Helen Coroneos, both of Galveston, also numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Thomas J. Cordray, III, James J. Cordray, Adolph J. Coroneos, Jeffrey Jay Rourke, Cecil C. Kennedy, Jr. and Jack Kivch.

Honorary pallbearers were James K. Rourke, John W. Rourke, Robert 0.

Rourke, Jerome B. Rourke, Emil J. Cordray, Tommy J. Clark, Bernard Ott, A.E. Wegner, Carl Hill and Melnotte W. Rourke.

Brother Dusek was a beloved husband, a kind brother to his sisters, a loving uncle to his nieces and nephews, and a true and compassionate friend. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to know him.

May our lodge brother rest in eternal peace and many his memory remain with us forever. Let perpetual light shine upon him.

Memoriam

Julius Holub was born on March 27, 1905 in Fayette County, Texas. He was the youngest son of five boys and one daughter born to Anton and Josephine Holub.

In 1907, when Julius was only two years old, the family moved to Baylor County and settled in the Mary's Creek community,

On March 29, 1932, Julius married Edna Kovar at Bomarton in Saint John's Church. He and Edna moved into their own home on the farm they had purchased just west of Seymour.

They lived there until moving to Seymour in 1974 when they sold the farm and built a home on Lawn Street.

Julius' health began to fail and, in March 1985, he entered the Westview Care Center, where he remained until his death. Monday morning, October 12, 1987.

Julius was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the SPJST Lodge No. 95, Seymour.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday at Seymour Memorial Funeral Home. Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Seymour with Rev. Harry Fisher of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church officiating. Burial was in Bomarton, Texas, Catholic Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Holub; a sister, Martha Cernosek of Graham, Texas, and a large number of nieces and nephews.

To you, the many friends and relatives who came by and brightened his days, I know Julius enjoyed every minute of your visits. To you, Edna, I know Julius looked forward to your care and love during his two years and seven months at the Care Center. We will all miss him.

Expression Of Sympathy VLASTA BARCAK MRAZEK of Robstown passed away Sunday morning, October 18, 1987 in a local nursing home after a long illness.

She was born in Engle (Fayette County) Texas, July 23, 1899 and was a longtime resident of Robstown since 1917. She was a retired sales clerk for Balzer's. She worked at Balzer's until their closing in 1971. She loved flowers and dancing and enjoyed people; her friends will remember her. She was a long faithful member of St. John's Catholic Church, KJZT, SPJST, St. Ann's Altar Society, Women of the Moose, AARP Golden Age Club and Czech Heritage Society of South Texas. She was preceded in death by her son, Vernon Mrazek in 1939.

Survivors include one daughter, Darlene Edwards; three grandchildren, Sandy Edwards and Candy Hunter, both of Robstown and Randy Edwards of Corpus Christi; two great grandchildren, James Edwards and Stacey Hunter, both of Robstown and several nieces and nephews.

A rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday, October 20th at St. John's Catholic Church. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 21st at St. John's Catholic Church with Father Aidan Leddy as celebrant.

Pallbearers were Sandy Edwards, Randy Edwards, Jerry Kubala Jerome Mrazek and John Cabron.

November 15 is the date of the next Shirley and I went along to attend as Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance visitors. It was so nice to see so many Chapter No. 9 meeting. It will be held friends that we have made at previous at the National Hall, 3316 Roberts Cut conventions. The members of the Rosenberg Chapter were perfect hosts - Off Road at 2 p.m. this time.
