An estimated 83 percent of dishwasher owners handrinse their dishes before putting them in the dishwasher-- and it is a waste of time and effort. Dishwashers have been improved in the past decade -- the water is hotter, the system for disposing of food debris is better and the spray is more powerful. Except for burned - on food, there is no need for hand. - rinsing, according to Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers. Yet 70 percent of all owners still rinse everything, and 13 percentmore routinely rinse hard - to clean itemssuch as casseroles, pots and pans, the survey revealed.

Is year - round schoollng here? Its time may have arrived.

July, 1989, Los Angeles, with 618 schools, will be the largest school district in the country operating year round. Only 67 districts, involving less than 1 percent of the student population, now run year - round classes. Most are in the West -­ California, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and Texas -- in cities with rapidly growing enrollment but limited finances, The concept gained some popularity during the late 1960s and early 1970s when booming suburbs couldn't build schools fast enough. It lost some of its appeal later as enrollments dropped.

The plans vary. Some.schools hold classesfor 3 months and close for one.

At others, it's 60 weekdayson, 20 off.

There are some 12 variations in all. In most, students are divided into "tracks" so that at any time one group is on vacation, and classrooms never sit idle.

Still, there's plenty of resistance -­ from . parents and students whose vacations and job plans stand to be disrupted and from summer - camp operators whose businesses . are threatened. Teachers'. unions take no position on the subject, and teachers themselves are divided. Impact . on quality of education is a big question.

School officials hope Los Angeles' experience will provide answers.

If you've ever watched someone close to you wage a losing battle against a terminal illness, you've probably already asked yourself at what point you would have conceded -defeat, Now that modern technology can keep a desperately ill patient alive long after all hope of recovery has vanished, those who want some control over when in treatment they say "enough" have to take precautions while they're still healthy.

Under common law, any adult of sound mind has the right to refuse medical treatment necessaryto sustain life. If you become incapacitated and unable to speak, however, you may require written proof of your wishes.

A living will can protect you and your family from the indignity, heartbreak and financial devastation that your protracted death may mean.

More than 10 million Americans have so far drawn up living wills.

Basically, these documents state your unwillingnessto be subjectedto useless life - prolonging medical measures should a catastrophic injury or illness such.as stroke or cancer leave you no chance of recovery. A living will can also spell out the kind of care that you do want if you become temporarily incapacitated and unable to express your wishes. Living wills are recognized by 41 states. Even in those states without specific legislation, living wills usually are considered evidenceof the patient's intent and so can ease a doctor's, fear of civil or criminal liability if he or she abides by a dying patient's wishes. Of course, some doctors -- as a matter of professional or religious ethics -­ oppose letting a patient die as long as it is within their power to prolong life.

Before you draft a living will, therefore, discuss the idea with your physician. Also, talk it out with your family, friends, clergy and lawyer.

Most attorneys can draw up the document for you. Or you can save from $50 to $250 in legal fees by writing your own. But because state law varies so greatly, you may want to have an attorney at least review your willto make sure it is valid under your state's provisions. In general, the document should be signed and dated in the presence of two witnesses who aren't blood relatives or heirs. Be as specificas possible. Spell out precisely whichsorts of treatment are acceptable and which are not. As an additional precaution, you may want to give someone you trust "durable" power of attorney, which wouldauthorize the designated person to make decisions about your medical treatment even after you become unable to do so yourself.

Once the will is written, give copies to anyone who can speak for you if it becomes necessary -- family members, close friends, lawyers, clergy. Ask your doctor to include a copy in your medical records. Should you someday changeyour mind, a living will is easy to revoke. You can sign a witnessed and notarized statement indicating that the document is no longer valid, or you can simply destroy all copies of the original document.

District IV Holds Insurance Workshops

Lodge 15, Buckholts Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting was called to order by President Joe Zajicek.

We stood for the Pledge of Allegiance. Then our visitors were recognized, namely, Lillie Zajicek, Dan Balusek and Thomas Harwell. We are always happy to have you all.

We had two members transfer from Houston lodge to Buckholts, the little country town. They were Mr. and Mrs.

SFM Gene McBride held workshops at Rowena and Seymour along with District Director Stanley Broz.

There were 15 sales representatives in attendance at these workshops. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those who are not active to come join us.

It is the duty of the lodge and its members to support the sales representatives of your lodge and help them secure new members in order to keep your lodge alive and growing.

Please urge the sales representatives of your lodge to attend the insurance seminars so that they can better serve your membership.

Dear Members: Lodge No. 17 at New Tabor held its regular monthly meeting on October 4 at 2 p.m. with all officers present.

A Resolution of Sympathy was read for Michael Huffman; to his family and friends, we extend our deepest sympathy.

New members are Charles Petty and Lyndon James Zgabay.

Bud Petty reported on the challenge Tarok match with Lodge No. 47,

Seaton. Seaton won but by a small margin and we will do better next time; and, yes, they did win our trophy.

Speaking personally, it was a fun - day and I'm waiting for a rematch. 1 would like to see more of these matches across the state.

At our next meeting, we will make plans for our memorial service, annual meeting and meal. Come out and help us make plans.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Dear Readers: On October 4 at 1 p.m. was our monthly meeting of Lodge 6 which was opened by President Johnnie Krizan.

Pledge to the flag was led by Keith Hykel and Tammi Dobecka and SPJST motto was led by Keith Hykel.

The minutes from our last meeting were read by Barbara Hykel. Our Treasurer Karen Kroll gave her report.

Financial Secretary George Straten also gave his report with no corrections. All reports were approved as read.

A get well card was sent to Cilford Straten of Houston; Cilford is the son of Brother and Sister George Straten.

Cilford received second degree burns some time ago and was hospitalized for two weeks. We hope he is doing good by now. A letter was received from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar congratulating us for all the donations that our lodge has made during the year to our neighboring societies and also for the Youth Club receiving third place prize in the Westfest Parade.

Correspondence was also from the William Onstatt family acknowledging with grateful appreciation of our kind expression of sympathy. Brother Onstatt passed away April 27, 1987 at Malone, Texas; a donation was sent to the family from our lodge; he was our member since June 1972. May our departed brother rest in eternal peace.

frost refrigerator from Jodie and Cynthia Krizan from Garland, Texas.

He also delivered it. This is a very generous gift to our lodge and is appreciated very much by all of our members. We want to say thank you very much!

Our next Board of Trustees' meeting will be held Friday night, November 6 at 7:30 p.m., and please notice our Sunday monthly meeting had been changed to Tuesday night, November 10 at 7:30 p.m.; as usual, a meal will be served before the lodge meeting at 6:30 p.m. We hope to see those who couldn't make it Sundays so _they can make it on week days, especially, at night; there can't be any excuses, if you want to come! We are planning on having games, dominoes and Taroky.

A prize for the winners will be given, so why not attend!

At our last Lodge 6 meeting, the meal was served by George and Josie Mae Straten -- a delicious turkey and dressing supper was served with all the trimmings and sweets which was enjoyed by all who came. Those who don't come don't know what they are missing, or do you?

Today's door prize was won by Shirley Dobecka; progressive prize for $10 -- name drawn was Margaret Schroeder (not present); second prize of $4 was Eddie Ray Hrabal (also absent).

For those of you who are familiar with the game know it to be very challenging combined with a great deal of luck. The members of Lodge 47 could not have found more friendly Tarok adversaries then the members of Lodge 17, New Tabor. The day was spent in friendly competition and this writer encourages anyone who hasn't played to give it a try.

Our annual Family Meeting will be Sunday, December 13 at 1:30 p.m. at Eddie and Frances Vrana's cabin.

We will have a garage sale next spring so we can make some money to paint our lodge hall. We would like for all the members to participate.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Dear Readers: Our October meeting was called to order by President Barbara Macek. All officers were present.

We also wish to thank Supreme Lodge Secretary - Treasurer Leonard Mikeska for taking time out from his busy scheduled to visit at our meeting. _ Those on the sick ,l ist are Shirley Kelarek and Otto Schneider; hope both of you have speedy recoveries and will be back on your feet soon.

The minutes of the September meeting were read by Secretary Carol Chervenka. Monthly _reports were given by the committee chairmen. The reports were very good this month and we hope it can stay that way. President Macek thanked those of us who attended the District II fall meeting and helped out. It was a really nice

meeting which seemed to be enjoyed by all.

The Salary and R&R Committees gave their reports. The salaries were proposed to stay the same and the R&R Committee has two changes to be voted on at the next meeting.

December 13 has been set as our Christmas Party date. There will be a program by the youth, dinner and fellowship time. We will be having turkey and dressing and everyone is asked to bring a vegetable and dessert.

The youth will be drawing names for Christmas gifts so parents remember this.

Our next meeting will be held the first Tuesday, November 3 (it has been changed). Remember November 3 at 7:30 p.m. because this will be election of officers and election of delegates to the 1988 Convention. Please make time to attend because we need each and every member. See you then.

Lodge

Dear Members: Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its November monthly meeting on Sunday, the 1st, at 1 p.m. in the small office at 106 Leveridge Street. The "Order of Business" will be standard.

The agenda will have, besides the regular reports, a report on the District VI gathering that took place on October 25th. A report will be given naming those members who will meet the qualification to be elected a delegate.

There will be the usual gathering upstairs in the hall after our meeting.

The October monthly meeting, on the 4th, started on time with a good quorum present. All reports were accepted as given. Two motions were made and passed to take care of lodge business. It was announced that the December meeting will be held upstairs in the hall since there will be an election of officers and delegates. The meeting lasted about an hour.

The door prize was won by Sister Julie Janik.

More than enough food was had by those who stayed for the luncheon after the meeting. Sisters Hanzelka, Janik, Brdecka and Nezval along with Brother Lupik added to the items furnished by the lodge to make it a success.

Thanks, again, go to those who stayed to help with the cleanup.

Without your help, some of us could still be there.

The Taylor .SPJST Lodge No. 29 held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, October 11, 1987 at 4 p.m. with President Melvin Steger presiding.

Pledge of Allegiance was recited and we had roll call of officers.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read. The treasurer's and Property Committee's reports were also given.

New members accepted were Jody Prenz, Ronald Leigh Krueger, Kendall Ray Prenz, Jennifer Krueger and Jeffrey Kent Krueger.

We were very proud to have our Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar present at our meeting.

Youth Leader Donna Vanecek reported 15 members attended the meeting and there will be a District II Skating Party Sunday, October 25th in Temple, Their club social will be a lock - in Friday, October 30 at the lodge hall. There will be a costume contest.

On their fund - raiser of Tom Watts sales, the club sold $4,106 and cleared $1,200.

Our lodge received a beautiful plaque from Williamson County 4 - H Club for having their banquets at our lodge for the past years.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, November 8th, our officers for the coming year will be elected at this meeting and also delegates to our convention will be elected, so please be present at our next meeting.

President Rita Vanek called the meeting to order. Youth. Member Kim Kacal led the members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. A minute of silent prayer was observed for all departed members, especially_for A.E. Priesmeyer and Adolph Bacak who passed away during the_ past_ month.

Secretary Leona Macha called _ the roll of officers. All were present except Albert Kresta Sr., trustee, who is ill.

The minutes of our September 21, 1987_meeting were read and approved.

Treasurer Madeline Shimek presented balances of accounts. A copy of reports is on file.

First Vice President Bennie Reck reported on hall management.

Albert Kresta Sr. was chosen "Fraternalist of the Year" for our lodge.

A motion_ was made by Dora Lee Kopecky, seconded by Floyd Shimek, to donate $50 for each member walking for CROP (Annual Crop Walk for World Hunger) on Saturday, October 24, 1987. Motion carried.

A motion by Floyd_ Shimek, seconded by Mary Ann Karasek, to donate $200 to Wharton County Sheriff's Department. Motion carried.

President Rita Vanek appointed Yvonne Morris, Ella Mae Knebel and James Bacak to the Nominating Committee for officers for 1988.

Dear Members: Our President Charlie Matcek called the October 13 meeting to order at 7 p .m.

Gilbert Walzel led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of our departed member, Sister Frances Barina. May she rest in peace.

Minutes of our previous meeting were read by Mary Werner. She also read a thank you note from the Raymond Matula family for a memorial, and from Martha Marx, S.A.D., from the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville for a donation.

Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall gave her report. Special Fund report was given by Gilbert Walzel. All reports were accepted as read.

Benita Walzel read the changes in the R&Rs in addition to the old ones.

They were approved.

President Charlie Matcek read a letter concerning the "Fraternalist of the Year;" vote was taken and Mary Werner was elected as fraternalist.

Our next meeting will be on November 8 at 12 noon for lunch and meeting at 1 p.m. Election of officers will take place at this meeting.

For our lunch, the lodge will furnish roast and ham. Ladies are asked to bring covered dishes of vegetables and pastry. Do try to come and fraternize with us.

Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council met at the Czech Club Wednesday; a good time was reported. October 21st -WOW will host at SPJST Lodge No. 84; a charity project is being located.

The Czech Culture met here and, as reported by Sister Bessie Petr, Czech Day at the fair discussed and all plans are completed.

House Committee -- The front door is repaired and painted and new locks on side and back doors. Special thanks to Brother Olson for bringing most needed equipment that was used; also Brother Emil Petr for painting the front door and Brother Adolph Salac for work performed. Thanks to Sister Carlyn Ondrusek, Evelyn Salac, Rose Scott and Brothers Adolph Salac, Emil Petr, Randolph Scott and Emil Petr for taking down and disposing of the large shrubbery in front. Thanks for a job well done!

A Nominating Committee has been asked to put forth names of members willing to hold office at our Lodge No. 84. October 19 is our next meeting and you should try to come.

The October 14 meeting of Danbury Lodge No. 139 was called to order by President Vincent Hechler. Secretary Tommie Lostak then read the minutes of the September meeting. He also read correspondence received since the last meeting. Financial Secretary Helen Filipp's report was followed by the report from Treasurer Lonnie Lostak.

It was voted to continue the practice of giving a Christmas turkey to each Lodge 139 member over 70 years of age. As in the past, Secretary Lostak will purchase and then deliver the turkeys to the recipients.

A Christmas Party was planned for the December meeting. The meeting time has been changed to 6 p.m., for the December meeting only. After completion of the business meeting,

the members will adjourn to E.J.'s Restuarant for dinner. The lodge will pay $5 toward the meal of each member who attends the meeting.

Brother Tommie was selected as candidate for "Fraternalist of the Year" from Lodge 139.

Because of the time change back to Standard Time, beginning with the November meeting, but excluding December, the lodge meetings will begin at 7 p.m.

beautiful program was presented by Kaye Bily's Dance Studio. She is the daughter of Lad and Tilly Bily and married to Dalton Knight. Tilly is a member of our club and we are so proud of her talented daughter, Kaye.

She had 4 dancers, namely: Natalie Garza, Audie Grammer, Gi Gi Grainger and Shelly Seelik. They were superb and I hope they can perform for us again some day.

Harry (Bubba) Finn, husband of Lillian had a bad accident. They live in Dickinson, right on the water, so naturally they cook a great deal of seafood. He had been boiling crabs and somehow spilled boiling water on his foot which is a serious burn. Tim and Rosalee Kostom who have a home at the Bay in the same area, had been to see them. They were quite alarmed about his condition, but ,he'll be all right, only a burn takes so long to heal.

One advantage they have is that Lillian is doing so well after a long siege of illness.

1 have to mention my dear friends' birthdays. Frances Olexa and her brother, Frank Dvorak, had birthdays October 8th; Frances is 88, and her brother, Frank, 90. They both have been active in Lodge 88 for a greater part of their lives. They both played in many plays and sang in Tim Kostom's Choral Group as well. Frances started our Birthday Club in 1946 and, when times were hard, they (the ladies) baked kolache and cooked goulash just to keep our heads above the water.

We should be very grateful for people like that, and there were many more who helped, however, many have passed on to the Great Beyond, but haven't been forgotten.

I, again, visited Grandma Hanka in Needville -- she's a marvelous person, so cheerful all the time and still so interested in all, of Lodge 88 activities.

She appreciated visitors; Louis and Oleta Hanus visited her, and she enjoyed them so much. Her address is: S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II, PO Box 347, Needville, Texas 77461. She would really like to hear from some of you. I also visited Mrs. Helen Valcik and Mr. Dobesh. They both had been to a picnic at Brazos River Park last week. Mr. Dobesh told Mrs. Marx that it was so wonderful to sit out under the trees and observe the surroundings, that it reminded him of his farm and home.

On November 17 the Birthday Club will have a treat. All the club members will go to Wyatt's Cafeteria and then to the hall for all kinds of games for the rest of the afternoon. Helen Hegwood has made arrangements with the manager.

Friendship Club Of Ft. Worth Report Dear Members and Friends: I understand that the October meeting was well attended, and much planning was done in regard to the November 4th Family Night Thanksgiving Dinner, beginning at 6 p.m.

To those members who did not attend the October_ meeting and did not sign the Thanksgiving menu, we ask you to make .a money donation if you attend the dinner in order to help defray the cost of the turkey.

The drawing for the handmade quilt, donated by Mrs. Mollie Walker, will take place at our December meeting. Many of our members need

to get their tickets to sell, to make this a worthwhile project.

Games will be played at our Family Night Dinner.

My thanks to Vice President Rose Steinman for taking the October meeting minutes._ Roy and I were in Reno, Neveda, plus taking in the sights in and around Lake Tahoe, Carson City, Virginia City and Grass Valley, California. It was nice visiting with Roy's brother and his wife from Kelso, Washington, who met us in Reno.

We express sincere sympathy to Ella Mae Faraizl and her family on the loss of her mother, Mrs. Angelina Ozymy, who passed away recently.

Our congratulations to Laure and Lance Ryan, who were married on October 10th at St. John's Catholic Church in Ennis with a reception, dinner and dance at SPJST Lodge No. 25. Laure is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Krajca.

Many of us wish to extend our congratulations to members Jo and Frank Prochaska who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on October 17th at Sokol Ft. Worth with a Polka Mass celebrated by Rev. R.J. Matus.

After Mass a delicious dinner was served, followed by a dance. There were many out - of - town family and friends in attendance. Georgia (Becan) Mihelich came from Chicago, Illinios and Bernard Prochaska and his wife, Elaine, from Santa Marie, California.

1 am sorry if I have not acknowledged others who came from outside of our state, but their presence was not made known to me.

It was indeed a great celebration assisted by the help of many friends to make it such an elegant event.

We also wish to extend our congratulations to Yvonne and Danny Zapletal who were married on October 17th at St. John's Catholic Church in Ennis, followed by a reception, dinner and dance. The Ernie Kucera Orchestra from Abie, Nebraska played for dancing.

Under old business, we were informed by Sister Alice Roberts that the Texas Queen Boat rides have been discontinued for a while. We will have to wait until next year to take our excursion ride.

We decided that the menu we choose to have for our catered Christmas Party will be chicken breast and trimmings. Dessert will be included.

A game will be played so everyone will be asked to bring a gift value of $3. Please do not bring a grocery item for this particular party.

The Telephone Committee will be contacting you in order to get reservations for the dinner and also for any guests you plan to bring.

Bertha Podhrasky reported on the Czech Cultural Society. The State Fair has limited the number of tickets given to participants this year. They have also cut down on car passes. It was voted that our Circle purchase 10 tickets that will be given to workers and participants from our group.

Under new business, Bertha Podhrasky had the Sokol's 75th Anniversary pins for sale. She announced that on November 1st the Sokol will have their 75th Anniversary Dinner/Program. Everyone is invited to come.

President Zvolanek announced that she had Souvenir Books from the 1986 Sesquicentennial Czech Day on sale for $1. She also had programs for this year's Czech Day at the Fair that were passed around.

The Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council meeting was announced to be held on October 22nd at SPJST Lodge No. 84, Dallas, with the Woodmen of the World hosting.

This month_ Mary Sebestik and Alice Roberts brought flowers for the officers' table. Bessie Kalich furnished the door prize.

I will report the donations this month along with November meeting's donations.

Those of you who were at the Czech Day at the Fair this year must agree how beautiful the day was. The weather and everything in general went so well. So many of our Circle members were there, many working in booths or participating on the program.

Once again, I must comment on the small children. They always steal the hearts of everyone. I especially enjoyed the group of children who represented WFLA No. 401. The songs and dances they performed were so

different and the children were all smiles enjoying 1, themselves immensely. Thanks to the youth directors of this group; my granddaughter was privileged to perform with the group and learn all the songs and dances.

Everyone who performed or participated in any way did a splendid job. God willing, let's look forward now to the year 1988 and, once again, meet at the State Fair of Texas.

Farmers/Officers To Visit Texas Zy Rudy Klecka An invitation to Vestnik readers and others and surrounding communities to join in welcoming 25 Czech farmer/officials of a farm exchange program from the "Slusovice" cooperative in Czechoslovakia at Riverside Hall, Sunday, November 8 from 5 to 9 p.m. Master of Ceremonies will be a former teacher in East Bernard, Professor Joe Skrivanek of Caldwell, retired language teacher at Texas A&M University. A short program will be presented by the East Bernard Czech Singers and plenty of time to meet, mix and talk to our Czech friends. Hamburgers and chips will be available at a nominal cost. At the same time a "big band sound" of Leo Henruch Orchestra will be playing at Riverside from 4 to 9 p.m., and you are invited to attend the dance for a nominal cost. A coat and tie is recommended for the gentlemen.

Thursday, November 19 is set for the "Farewell" at Riverside Hall, with everyone attending bringing their

favorite "covered dish" beginning at 4 to 8 p.m. Master of Ceremonies will be Mr. Charles Heyda, of Houston. A musical program will follow with the East Bernard Czech Singers, Fred Gerke and his friends of Beasley, our local western talent, and other talents.

After the reception, we can tap our feet to the beat of "Wichita," a western band, open to the public for a nominal cost; dancing from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

October 1, twenty - five area farmers and wives returned from a 12 - day tour of the "Shgovice" cooperative farm exchange program, through the organization of Rudy Klecka's Klub Kontinental. Rudy and Henrietta have been organizing group tours to Europe and Czechoslovakia for over 20 years annually, and this is their first "people - to - people" exchange group.

Come out and meet the Czechs and let's show our Texas hospitality and community spirit.

In recent correspondence with Mr. Antonin Pelikan, Director of the Czechoslovak Foreign Institute (CSUZ), we have been advised that there are scholarships (stipendium) available for high school graduates (and or first year college students) to study for a year at Charles University in Prague, Czechoslovakia.

Mr. Pelikan writes that they would expect two or three students from Texas to apply for this government grant which includes room, board and tuition for the 1988 - 1989 school year.

According to the cultural exchange prograrlsigned last year by the United States and Czechoslovakia scholarships (stipendium) are to be made available for university study in both countries on an exchange basis.

From The State Youth Director November Vestnik Project On the first two days of November when the last leaf is slowly falling to earth, leaving Nature to sleep its winter rest, we · remember the dead in

Czechoslovakian custom. All Saint's and All Soul's Days are observed fittingly when dark and heavy clouds are shading the earth and only a little warmth comes from the fading sun; a time when the North wind brings a white blanket, signaling an early winter. These 2 days are sadly pathetic scenes: a close - fitting sleep of Nature.

The first day of November is the feast day of All Saint's Day (svátek vtech svatých) and the second day is All Soul's Day (dusiček). The cemeteries during these 2 days are aglow with the shimmering light of thousands of small candles placed on the graves which have been decorated by many beautiful varieties of chrysanthemums. During these days, the Czech cemeteries in the Old Country are alive with the visits of those irretrievable left behind by families' loved ones, interned in this garden of death.

It is almost impossible to compare these November days, the days of decorating and visiting graves in the Old Country with those in our country here.

The Czech cemeteries there are whispering with the breath of loved ones, lit by the small candles and beautiful with autumnal colors of the last blossoms.

During those days, our cemeteries are full of spiritual remembrances of those who have left the physical unbroken circle.

The Czech people have always tended their cemeteries just as carefully as their gardens. The solemn pride of the cemeteries is very evident in the Czech lands, and so it is of little wonder that the Czech pioneers settling in Texas, Nebraska and other states in this country should establish their cemeteries so closely resembling those in their homeland.

President Trudy Krenek called the meeting to order. Aaron Hervey led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

There were no secretary's minutes.

The treasurer's report was then read.

There was no old business to discuss. Under new business we planned on having a wiener roast and hayride on Thursday, October 22nd at 6 p.rn, Visitors to be welcomed;

We began our project by picking up litter on Highway 141. It looked very good afterwards.

Before entering the spook house we all listened to a tape recorded about our Youth Club's own famous "Adolph M." It was really scary. The spook house had a table set up with different body parts; a witch brewing, and then all visitors were able to stick their hands in spaghetti and jello. I had a coffin with a light shining in it. It wasn't too hard to be serious lying there real still, until our dear Beseda teacher, Calvin, came up and tried to kiss me. I cracked up. We all had a great_time. I really believe the adults who came through had the most fun and were probably the most scared.

Our Youth Club is. selling Tom Watts for a fund - raising project. A portion of our money made will help a needy family at Christmas and also a donation to the SPJST Scholarship Fund. Please help by buying some items for Christmas.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, November 1st at 1 p.m. Please note the time. This meeting will be the adult elections for next year. Ask your parents to be sure to come and vote.

We will also plan for our _ Christmas program and we need to talk about our party for Christmas.

He married Lillian Zavodny on August 5, 1947.

He and his wife owned and operated a general merchandise and recreation center in Marak. The place of business served as home for SPJST Lodge Pokrok Jihu No. 72, Cameron and CSA Fraternal Life Lodge Cameron No. 460.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Ben Milam Post 2010, Disabled Veterans Post Sam Tyson No. 18, American Legion Post Edwin Hardy No. 9, Second (Indian Head) Division Association, Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church serving as annual picnic concessions chairman for 20 years and also a member of SPJST Lodge 47 Seaton Choral Group, Charter member of CSA Fraternal Life Lodge 460 (Cameron) serving as vice president, and had served as Marak Public School trustee.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian Mikulec of Marak; sons, Frank Mikulec III and Michael Mikulec of Cameron, Maurice Mikulec of China Springs; daughter, Joetta Ehler of Cameron; brothers, August Mikulec of Corpus Christi, Alphonse Mikulec and I.J. Mikulec of Cameron, Theodore Mikulec and Alfred Mikulec of Marak, Norbert Mikulec of Dallas; sisters, Minnie Krenek of Taylor and Claudia Hill of Abilene; and five grandchildren, Lamar Paul Mikulec, Tamara Mikulec, Adrienne Ehler, Alena Ehler, all of Cameron and Wesley Paul Mikulec of China Springs.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Micky Montgomery.

Services were held at 10 a.m.

Saturday, August 1st in Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church with Father Tom Chamberlain officiating.

Burial was in Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Cemetery with full military honors. A rosary was recited Friday at 7 p.m. in Marek - Burns - Laywell Funeral Home Chapel.

Serving as pallbearers were nephews, T.J. Mikulec and Myron Mikulec of Cameron, Frankie Krenek of Taylor, Virgil Klaus of Austin, Jeffrey. Mikulec of Dallas and Thomas Mikulec of Cameron.

Serving as honorary pallbearers were members of American Legion, Julius Cabron, Alfred Dusek, George Hosch, Don Lemons, M.T. Morris and Walter Lester.

Frank Paul Mikulec, Jr. of Marak passed away July 29, 1987 at Olin E. Teague Veterans Medical Center in Temple, Texas.

A retired merchant, farmer and rancher, he was born to Frank and Emily Balusek Mikulec in Marak, Texas on December 3, 1916 the fourth child in a family of ten children. He attended Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic School and Marak Public School.

He entered military service in November 1940 serving in Company "G" 38th Infantry Second (Indian Head) Division.. He was wounded at St. Lo, France in the Allied Invasion of Europe. He was awarded the Purple

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Novy Tabor No. 17, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother MICHAEL EDWARD HUFFMAN, who died Friday morning, August 28, 1987, following an auto pedestrian accident.

He was born October 1, 1975 in Temple, Texas, the son of Guy and Martha Huffman. A lifelong resident of Caldwell, Texas, Michael would -have been in the 6th grade in the Caldwell Middle School. He loved

gymnastics and playing the piano. He was also fascinated with computers and enjoyed playing baseball. He was an active member of the Caldwell Brethren Church, never missing Sunday services.

Survivors include his parents, Guy and Martha Polasek Huffman of Caldwell; one brother, Matthew Allen Huffman of Caldwell; one sister, Rachel Renee Huffman of Caldwell; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Huffman of Blufton, Ohio; and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Bennie Polasek, Sr. of Caldwell, Texas.

Funeral services for Michael Edward Huffman, age 11, were held at 3 p.m.

Sunday, August 30 in the Caldwell Brethren Church with the pastors, Rev. Dan Marek and Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Interment was in the New Tabor Cemetery.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Seaton Star Lodge No. 47, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother HENRY L. KABELLA, who passed away in a Temple hospital Thursday, September 10, 1987 at the age of 87.

Mr. Kabella founded Kabella Plumbing Company of Temple more than 50 years ago, retiring in 1965. He married the former Albina Eva Slovak on May 15, 1917. He was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Kabella in 1975 and by a granddaughter, Nancy Jordan, in 1980.

Mr. Kaballa was a charter member and 4th degree member of Council No. 3444 Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He also was a member of the Temple Lions Club and Chapter No. 138 BPOE. Mr. Cuba resided at 814 South 45th Street, in Temple. He was born in Temple, Texas. After graduating from Temple High School, he attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he received a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He received a Master's degree in Accounting from Baylor University. He was a Temple businessman and former president of Temple Savings & Loan Association.

Services for Mr. Cuba were held Friday, September 25 at 3 p.m. at Harper - Talasek Funeral Home with Reverend Don Barnes and Reverend W.A. McCann officiating. Burial was held in Bellwood Memorial Park.

Survivors are four daughters, Sally Day of Austin, Nancy S. Lasly of Belton, Karen Cuba and Wendy Cuba, both of San Antonio; his mother, Mrs. Patricia Machalek Cuba of Temple; two brothers, Donald L. Cuba and Benjamin J. Cuba, both of San Antonio; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Ben Cuba, who died in 1983.

WICHITA, who passed away Sunday, September 27, 1987, at Olin E. Teague Veterans Center in Temple, Texas at the age of 93 years.

Mr. Wichita resided at 1115 South 19th Street in Temple. He was born in Fayette County, Texas. He married Miss Lottie Bravenec on December 19, 1923. He served in the Army during World War I in Company D315 U.S. Engineers, seeing action at St. Mihiel, the Meuse, and the Argonne. He also served in the Army of Occupation in Liese, Germany.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Temple and a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1820.

Services for Mr. Wichita were held Tuesday, September 29, at 2 p.m. at Harper - Talasek Funeral Home Chapel in Temple, with Reverend Theiss Jones officiating. Burial was held in Bellwood Memorial Park.

-7eatures Orsag - Foster Wedding Debra Gale Orsag of Austin and Gary Don Foster, also of Austin were united in marriage on Saturday, July 18, 1987 at 7 p.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Father Larry Covington performed the ceremony. A reception, dinner and dance followed the wedding with music by "Cross Ties."

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Roy Orsag of Austin, Texas.

The groom is the son of Mrs. Sylvia Foster and the late Eugene Foster of Princeton, West Virginia.

The bride's wedding gown was a soft ivory candlelight color. The gown had a high neckline with a beaded and lace bodice and a dropped waistline. The train was full of soft shimmering ruffles. The headpiece was a wreath of ivory silk flowers and glimmering beads with a bunt of soft ruffles at the back. The bridal bouquet was an ivory ruffled - lace fan covered with teal, mauve and ivory silk flowers. The bridesmaids also carried ivory ruffled lace fans covered with teal and mauve silk flowers. All of the wedding flowers and arrangements were made by the bride. For something borrowed was a gold chain and cross centered with a diamond of the bride's mother.

Mrs. Gary Don Foster For something old a gold wedding band of her grandmother's worn in her wedding in 1921. For something blue the bride wore a blue garter, a gift of Sharon Styron.

The bridesmaids wore teal full length gowns with teal lace and a silk bow on the side of the hip.

The maid of honor was Pamela Lane of Austin. Bridemaids were Karen Poehl of Austin, Sharon Styron (sister of the groom) of Austin, Grace Clemens (cousin of the bride) of Paulding, Ohio and Jill Bickford Foster (sister - in - law of the groom) of Austin. The flower girl Jodie Styron, niece of the groom, carried an ivory lace parasol covered with silk flowers.

The groom wore an ivory Pierre Cardin tuxedo with tails. The groomsmen wore charcoal grey Pierre Cardin tuxedos. The best man was Grant Foster, brother of the groom from Austin. The groomsmen were Mike Milillo of Palatke, Florida, Brian Styron (nephew of the groom) of Austin, Ron Styron (brother - in - law of the groom) of Austin and David Orsag (brother of the bride) of Giddings, Texas. Clint Boundy (great cousin of the bride) escorted the flower girl and Kyle Boundy (great - cousin of the bride) was the ring bearer, both of Paulding, Ohio. Ushers were Tom Bigbee of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Rick Kendrick of Princeton, West Virginia.

A graduate of William B. Travis High School in Austin, Texas, the bride attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos. She is employed by the U.S. Post Office in Austin.

The groom graduated from Princeton High School in Princeton, West Virginia and graduated from Concord College in Athens, West Virginia with a Bachelor of Science

degree. He is employed by ICI Pharma as a sales representative in Austin.

After a honeymoon to Nassau, Bahamas, the couple will make their home in Austin, Texas.

Carol Lynn Marek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel R. Marek of Rockdale, was married Saturday, September 19, 1987 at 3 p.m. to Charles Richard Faulder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald E. Faulder of Fort Worth.

Rev. Hume Reeves, Jr. performed the ceremony at the Peace Lutheran Church in Rockdale.

The bride, escorted by her father, wore a designer bridal gown with Queen Anne neckline, chantilly lace leg of mutton sleeves. The fitted bodice was adorned with lace appliques, pearls and sequins. The full skirt of organza was draped and held by lace appliques, pearls and sequins which swept into a full train. The veil designed and made by the bride featured a crown of flowers and pearls which held the ruffled edged illusion veil.

She carried a cascading bouquet of white roses, stephanotis, miniature carnations, pearls, English ivy and touches of peach flowers.

Pam Marek, cousin of the bride from Temple, was maid of honor.

Bridesmaids were Cindy McConkey, sister of the bride; Monique Kovar of Rockdale; and Margaret Lopez of Burleson. Junior bridesmaid included Melissa Zaskoda, cousin of the bride, from Rockdale.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Faulder They wore royal blue floor - length dresses with sweetheart necklines with puffed sleeves. They carried white lace fans with peach ribbons, carnations, and peach roses.

Ashley Watters of Temple was flower girl. She wore a street - length dress identical to the bridesmaids and carried a white flower basket with peach roses and carnations.

Eddie Faulder, brother of the groom, was best man. Groomsmen included Daniel Marek Jr., brother of the bride; Dan Browning of Fort Worth; and Andres Lopez of Burleson. Donny Faulder, brother of the groom, was junior groomsman.

Serving ushers' duties were Frank Marek of Temple; Greg McConkey and Carl Bitnar, both of Fort Worth.

Providing music was organist Liz Allen and soloists were Mary Graham and Stephanie Reeves. Teresa Nolen had charge of registering the guests.

Christie Spence, cousin of the bride, handed out rice bags.

A reception followed at the Rockdale Civic Center, which was decorated in royal blue and peach colors. Houseparty participants consisted of Frances Speer, Elizabeth Doud, Elsie Svrcek, Dawn Bryd and Adeline Kovar.

A 1982 graduate of Diamond Hill Jarvis High School (Fort Worth), the groom attends Tarrant County Junior College and works for M & M Manufacturing, Inc. also in Fort Worth.

The bride graduated from Rockdale High School in 1985. She is employed at General Agency, Inc. in Bedford, Texas.

After a trip to Austin and San Marcos, the newly - wed couple is making their home in Fort Worth.

A rehearsal dinner was hosted by the groom's parents at the Longhorn Steak House in Rockdale.

The bride is the granddaughter of Dolfina Chovanec of Rogers and Mr. and Mrs. Chris Spence, Jr. of Waco.

Orchestra Celebrates Anniversary

The Jodie Mikula and Orchestra celebrated their 20th anniversary as a band on Saturday, July 18, 1987 with an appreciation dance for their fans.

The band members and their wives met their guests at the front door to greet each person as they arrived. Each guest received a ticket for door prize drawings and a picture of the band.

According to the guest register, people from all across the State of Texas attended and some people from as far away as Louisiana, Arkansas. and Oklahoma.

The hall was decorated with rainbow colors. Four hot air balloons outlined the ceiling across the dance floor.

Rainbow streamers ran from the balloons to the center light fixtures.

On the tables were colored bottles with balloons and sacks of popcorn. Also on the tables were tent cards which contained two pictures; one taken in 1967 and one taken in 1987, and the 1987 dance schedule. Cardboard musical instruments and streamers outlined the stage. The registry table was decorated with a lace tablecloth, balloons and streamers. On the registry table were pictures of the band and a chest made by Jodie Mikula for the door prize tickets. The cake table was decorated with lace tablecloths, ivy, streamers, an anniversary streamer and cardboard musical notes.

The band was presented with a plaque from several special people: Mr. and Mrs. Jim Matula and Sharon, Mr. and Mrs. Tim Prasifica and

Family, Mr. and Mrs. James Belota, James Rejcek, Jacqui Honza, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Belota, Mary Rasbury, and Chris Divin. The plaque was inscribed with the words, "Jodie Mikula and The Boys 20 Years of Great Czech Music." The band also received a beautiful plant from a very close and dear friend, Helen Skrasek.

Several cards were also received congratulating the band on their anniversary.

During the dance, the original members of the band gathered together to play a couple of numbers for old times sake. These members included Jodie Mikula and his uncle, Frank Mikula, on the button accordian, Ken and Nick Mikula on cornets and saxophones, Rosie Mikula, Jodie's wife, on the drums and Andy Mikula on the bass horn.

Keith, age 11, and Bradley, age 6, sons of Ken and Becky Mikula, played a few songs on cornets with the band later in the evening.

During the last 20 years, the band has had a few changes in personnel.

Two other band members, Daniel Barto and Larry Prda, were present at the dance and played a few songs with the band.

The band held a happy hour for their guests. They also served three cakes and punch. One cake announced the 20th anniversary of the band. A second cake was a replica of the band's music stands. The third cake listed the current members of the band: Jodie, Ken, Nick and Andy Mikula, Frank Kubena and Pat Zapletal. The cakes were served by Patty and Sandra Mikula and Cindy Kubena. Michelle Zapletal served the punch.

The band released their new album, "Dance Tonight," in honor of their 20th anniversary. The album was one of the door prizes given away.

Words are hard to come by to express everything the band feels. The great crowd overwhelmed each one of the band members. The words "thank you" just do not say enough. Each guest helped make the evening a happy and memorable one for each band member and their families.'

The band would also like to thank the officers of the SPJST Lodge No. 25 for their hospitality and for allowing the band to celebrate their anniversary dance at their hall.

Rodney Kaase... a fighter; a hero in our time and_not knowing it, that's Rodney. Born August 26, 1975 to Marvin and Nancy Kaase; he was diagnosed with Acute Monomyclogenous Leukemia in April, 1981 at the young age of 5'/ . He was on a chemotherapy program for 2 years in which Rodney received treatments every 21 days...indeed a fighter. With determination and a

positive attitude during this time, Rodney went into remission for over 5 years and became quite an athlete, playing football and baseball. He also enjoys fishing, swimming, and life in general. He has participted, supported and contributed to numerous fund raisers for the Leukemia Society.

Always smiling, never complaining, that's Rodney. And then in November, 1986, he had a relapse, forcing him to take more chemotherapy treatments.

During these treatments Rodney fought hard to finish his schooling and passed to the 7th grade. He is also the last survivor of a group of children which entered Texas Children's Hospital for Leukemia treatments 51/2 years ago...indeed a hero.

On June 11, 1987, Rodney was hospitalized to be the first patient at Texas Children's Hospital to receive Autologous Marrow Rescue (a modern technological advancement of removing one's own bone marrow, treating it, and transplanting_ it back into one's own system). If successful, this procedure will insure Rodney a long and healthy life without chemotherapy and hospitals; possibly a cure. For now, there is an intensive recovery period of fighting infections and organ rejections. But as Rodney lies in his sterilized room, he assures his family and friends that "he'll be just fine ' ...a true fighter!

By Willa Mae Cervenka I would like to add this about the Podlu2ans. They said that when they were on their way to USA, they were expecting to find advanced and highly developed computers, electronics and technology and large cars with all kinds of gadgets. But they didn't expect to find so many Czech people settled in Texas, speaking the Czech language, orchestras playing polkas and waltzes, choral groups and the many Czech costumes (korje) worn here. They highly commended the bands that played at the symposium in Bryan. One of the fellows popped up and said that they were also expecting to see cowboys and Indians., By the way,they liked the Czech Folk Dancers of West very much, especially the country - western dance. I told them; "Go to Detva Festival in 1988 and you can see them there." They voiced how proud they were of the people here in keeping up the Czech heritage, and to them it was like finding a "Little Czechoslovakia in Texas."

Children in Czechoslovakia are very interested in our cowboys. Milan CECH'S, son Hynek, drew a poster with a cowboy on a horse, herding cattle on a ranch for me to take home.

The Podluians were discussing and telling me that we need a better formula for our beer comparing their 7 percent to 20 percent alcohol to our 7.5 percent. The wives of Tibor Janog, Milan Cech and Franti gek Macinka, all are either dancers or singers with the Podlu2an group. Jaroslav Grof's wife is a gymnast, and performed at the SPARTAKIADA mass - gymnastics exercises that are featured every five years. Next performance is in 1990 in the Strahov Stadium in Prague. To my knowledge, this stadium is the second largest in the world; it seats 250,000 spectators.

In Ostrava, I visited in the home of Antonin and Bo2ena Fialek. They were fun and interesting people. En route from Brno to Uherske Hradi gte, a tourist attraction is the Buchlov fortified castle built in the 13th century. It is sitting on top of a mountain, you can see it from the highway. This castle was the property of several noble families who used it as a hunting lodge. Inside you will find a large collection of handcarved furnishings with intricate designs, vases, books and also weapons on display. As you walk up the steps to the entrance, there is a tree on your left that has branches resembling the roots of a tree. The legend is told that a man

was accused of a crime, and he pleaded not guilty. The judge gave an ultimatum. "That a tree will be planted and if the roots sprout upward, the man will be freed." Sure enough, the tree started to grow with the roots upward, therefore, the accused man was freed. Inside of this castle is a deep well, as you look down into it, you can see where unfaithful wives were thrown to die. Further down the road we saw a truckload of hogs overturned. What a sight, pig here, pig there, they were running everywhere, and here was the driver with a stick in his hand trying to keep them together and off the road!

In the Brno area is Macocha, the underground cavern resembling the Carlsbad Cavern in New Mexico, except this one has an underground river. One can proceed by boat into a magnificent cathedral structured by nature that looks like a fairyland. The karst formations gleaming along the tunnel passages are a sight to behold.

The temperature down in the cavern gets very cold - taking a sweater along was handy; many souvenirs can be purchased at the entrance of the cavern. You can see busloads of tourists, including tourists from Russia. MACOCHA was derived from the word MACECHA meaning stepmother. Close by is a little valley with very steep cliffs. There are two small lakes at the bottom. Here is the story about how this area Macocha got its name. A woman married a man who had a small daughter. The wife was very jealous of her stepdaughter and disliked her so much that she made a plan to get rid of her. She took the little stepdaughter for a walk along the edge of a steep cliff and pushed her off. As the little girl was tumbling down, she grabbed hold of a branch on a bush and held on, called for help and was rescued. The ste pmother was put to death for this crime.

Now a week later, it was time for me to return to Prague and await the arrival of my brother Wilfred Cervenka and his wife, daughter, Sandra, and son, Gary, from their trip to France, Italy and Switzerland.

Jaroslav and Ludmila Grof drove me to Prague. We ate lunch at the Panarama Hotel in Prague. It's a nice hotel with good food, but the location is too far out from downtown. Unless you have a car, you must ride a bus, subway, tram or a taxi to get to town.

Then we headed for the Esplanade Hotel where reservations were held for my brother's family and me.

Esplanade was not our choice of hotel, but due to an unforeseen delay of our trip, the Intercontinental Hotel was canceled and later booked to full capacity. My choices of hotels are, first--Intercontinental and, second-the Alcron. It's more expensive, but it's worth it. Both have good friendly service, good locations, excellent food with a larger variety, and there are more of their employees who can communicate in the English language at the Intercontinental Hotel, you can always get a decent cup of coffee. The restaurant Zlata Praha, is encircled with a glass picture window giving you a beautiful scenic view of Prague. -SPJSTMany people who have been mugged on the street, had a home burglarized or even felt threatened by crime have considered getting a guard dog for protection. It's safer than packing a pistol, and it's a lot cheaper than an elaborate electronic - security system like that of Lt. Col. Oliver North, but keeping a guard dog is not as easy as it seems, nor is it risk - free, as many pit bull owners are finding.

True guard dogs -- those trained to deter intruders -- are best suited to homes where there aren't many visitors of any kind. Most dogs find it hard to distinguish between friends, relatives and burglars. Some species -especially the newly - popular pit bulls, which were once bred mainly for fighting -- are so aggressive that they can maim or kill innocent children, old people and even their owners. Safer choices are those breeds that are so large and act so aggressively that they can deter evildoers by their mere presence. Among them are German shepherds, Doberman pinschers and Rottweilers. Some large dogs -- such as collies and Labradors -- are so docile that, while they may be great pets, they may not make very good guards.

There are vicious dogs in every breed, of course. To avoid ending up with one, ask about the dog's lineage before you accept it. A dog from a long line of aggressive animals is more likely to turn out the same way. Also, look for a puppy. Puppies' personalities are easier to shape than those of adult dogs. Once you get a dog, make sure that it is properly trained. At a minimum, training should include housebreaking and basic obedience, such as responding to simple commands -- "come," "heel," "sit" -- and walking on a leash. All of this can be quite expensive. You can pay $1,000 or more for a well - bred dog. And training -- which can begin when the dog is as young as eight weeks and last as long as six months -can cost an additional $1,500 and up.

You can hold down costs by adopting a puppy from the local pound for almost nothing and training it yourself. Book and pet stores carry a wide selection of training manuals.

If your dog attacks without provocation -- even on your own property -- you could be in big trouble.

The number of liability suits involving animal bites has increased 33, percent since 1985. In two - thirds of the cases, the plaintiff wins. The average award for flesh wounds is $37,620. Most homeowner - insurance policies cover dog bites.
