Sir Frederick Treves Three Districts [III, IV and VII] have their Fall meetings, Sunday, October 25th. Refer to the Bulletin Board and the agendas in this issue.

Sunday, October 11 this writer attended the District I meeting at the New Tabor Hall, which was hosted by Lodge No. 17 members. They held a brief meeting which Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas also attended and, on the way to the meeting yours truly took pictures of the "Adopt a Highway" signs at each end of the 2 miles of highway that the Lodge 17 Youth Club has "adopted" to keep clean -- congratulations, the signs are a real asset to our SPJST and to the Youth Club. (We will publish the photos when they arrive.)

District I has so much to be proud of for having written a lot of insurance in the past years, having a 1987 - 88 State Queen (Melissa Victorick) and State Duchess (Rebecca See), Cheryl Schoeneman being the State YAD $1,000 scholarshi p recipient, plus having a National Winner Bruce Skrabanek in the "U.S. Constitution Bicentennial Writing Contest" which was sponsored by the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA); all of these youngsters are members of Lodge No. 9 in Snook, Texas. District I has come a long way with their prosperity and achievements since the districts were organized in 1952. Keep up the good work!

It was nice to visit with Brothers Victorick, Wentrcek, Dickson, including late Brother Trcalek's son and Sisters Betty Schoenemann and Kubena as well as PC Secretary Melvin Skrabanek, etc. This was a nice Sunday fraternally spent. *** Remember you can open an IRA or Annuity Account with our SPJST anytime in the year. It is a good way to save for the future and an IRA is a good way to reduce your income tax payment to IRS! Think about it.

Check with your SPJST Sales Representative about the plans of insurance SPJST has to offer, especially, "Lone Pay Life" and also "Universal Life." If you don't ask, you won't know! *** During Westfest (Labor Day Weekend), one of the West Sokol members came to the editor with the news that Saturday there was a couple from California at the cultural program tent at Westfest, and he understood they were also present Sunday. After announcing it a distinguished lady came and introduced herself as Blanche (Dibelka) Duffey of 847 No. San Mateo Drive, San Mateo, California 94402. She also introduced her son and granddaughter who live in Texas. Mrs. Duffey is past president of San Francisco Sokol, head gymnast (instructor) for 4S years and assistant editor of San Francisco Vestnik. At the

ASO Slet in 1942, she placed first of 52 girls in High Division and attends 95 percent of all International and ASO Slets. She said: "Thanks for all your wonderful enthusiasm and entertainment!" At her age she is still an enthusiastic senior citizen and very friendly. She ended by saying: "Let's exchange Vestniks. Nazdar!" We hope to do so. If some of our members wish to write to her, the address is listed above. The editor hopes they had no the recent during problems earthquake.

Incidently, Sokol Gymnastic Association of West will celebrate their 8th anniversary Sunday, November 8th at Lodge No. 54/Sokol West Lone Star Hall. It doesn't seem that it was 8 years ago when we had our first organizational meeting in 1979; how time does fly! *** NFCA Convention Highlights --The "Fraternalist of the Year" award was presented to Mrs. Lillian Taubert, a member of the Order of the Sons of Hermann in the State of Texas.

Congratulations also to Bruce Skrabanek, member of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST). Bruce was the winner of the "U.S. Constitution Bicentennial Writing Contest" sponsored by the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA).

Bruce Skrabanek, of Snook, Texas, has been named winner of the U.S. Constitution Bicentennial Writing Contest sponsored by the National Fraternal Congress of America.

Skrabanek received a $1,000 prize for winning the contest, plus a trip to the National Fraternal Congress of America's 101st annual meeting in Chicago, October 1st - 3rd.

The National Fraternal Congress of America is an association of fraternal life insurance and benefit societies based in Naperville, Illinois. its membership consists of 100 fraternal organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada, with membership numbering more than ten million.

Skrabanek's essay was one of more than 80 entered in the NFCA Writing Contest. Other top finishers were Donald Liebrecht, of the Catholic Ladies of Columbia, Ohio, who won $500 for his second place finish; and, Charles Hokanson, Jr., of the Danish Brotherhood in America, Omaha, Nebraska, who won $250 for finishing third.

In his essay, Skrabanek described the political system created by the U.S. Constitution. "The United States' political system is one of reason, reflection, and expression of deliberate choice. Individuals who join to form public opinion may be insincere, fearless, blind, corrupt, or of limited wisdom, but true government regards with respect that the masses can distinguish between good and evil.

Housewives, farmers, actors, cab drivers, doctors, nurses, ministers and teachers, together with highly educationed lawyers, all constitute the opinion we as United States citizens respect. The opinion is not of one or of a few -- but the sagacity of many."

The Credentials Committee reported a total of 727 people in attendance at the 101st annual meeting. Post convention remarks indicate that the meeting site, hotel facility, and program substance were excellent. A full report of the annual meeting proceedings is being prepared and will be distributed in January to all who were in attendance at the meeting.

District II Workshops State Field Manager Gene McBride held workshops at Taylor and in Temple (Home Office) along with District Director Willie E. Kohutek.

There were 37 sales representatives in attendance at these workshops. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those who are not active to come join us.

It is the duty of the lodge and its members to support the sales representatives of your lodge, and help them secure new members in order to keep your lodge alive and growing.

Please urge the sales representatives of your lodge to attend the insurance seminars so that they can better serve your membership.

District III Meeting, October 25, 1987 Members of District Ill: We hope each of you will make plans to attend the fall meeting hosted

by Lodge 154 in Fort Worth, 6500 Boat Club Road, which is off Azle Avenue.

The district meeting is so important to your fraternal life and a wonderful opportunity to be with brothers and sisters from other lodges. This is your chance to exchange ideas and pick up helpful suggestions for your local lodge.

Lunch will be available at the hall. The menu will consist of roast beef, potatoes, green beans, salad, dessert and drink for $4.50 - adult plate and $3 for 12 and under. (Please take notice of the price correction.)

District VI Social Agenda Dear Fellow District VI Members: This year's fall district meeting, to be held October 25th at the SPJST Hall in Hillje, will be a change from the routine. At our last district meeting, it was decided to have a social instead of the usual business meeting.

The following is the planned agenda: 11:00 - Noon -- Registration Noon - 1:00 -- Meal 1:00 - 1:15 -- Welcome Announcements 1:15 - 1:30 -- Preparation 1:30 - 2:30 -- Youth Program 2:30 - 3:00 -- Czech Singers 3:00 - 5:00 -- Dance & Games Door prizes will be given throughout the afternoon.

Since the meal will be catered, each lodge is asked to send the total number of persons planning to attend from their lodge. Please send this total to: Rita Vanek, W. Norris Street, El Campo, Texas 77437 before October 21, 1987. So that this would be truly a district affair, each family attending is asked to bring a dessert.

In addition, a "Wheel of Fortune Game" will be played and each family is asked to contribute two pantry items and one youth item.

This will be our first attempt to have a full social meeting. Encourage the members of your lodge to attend and participate in the activities on October 25th.

The District VII Family Social will be held at the Lodge No. 107 Hall on FM 1303 Road near Floresville, Texas on October 25, 1987. Everyone in the district is welcome to come.

We will have fresh sausage, smoked turkey and a lot of other goodies to go with it; this will be at no charge, the food will be ready at 11:30 a.m.

Games are planned for the afternoon .

35, Elk Meeting

Our monthly meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz on October 11 at 3 p.m., with all officers present.

Pledge to the flag was led by Youth Club Members Jessika Tierce and Jana Breitkreutz.

Minutes were read by Secretary Rosemary Banik and were approved.

She then read thank you notes from the families of Henrietta Pavelka and Rudy Zalman. She also read correspondence from the Home Office concerning delegates to the coming convention and the "Fraternalist of the Year" awards. Sister Rosemary Banik was elected as our "Fraternalist of the Year" of Lodge No. 35.

The treasurer's report was given by Sister Rosemary Banik.

Youth Leader Louise Burney reported that there were 15 members, I social and 5 adults at their meeting.

New youth members are James Stead,

Chaflene Stead and Sandra Trickett.

They plan a cake walk October 24th and October 31st, a fun - raiser for the next meeting, and getting together a Christmas program. The Youth Club door prize was won by Tommy Pavelka.

Those having birthdays in October were Wendy Whitby and Ron Williams.

It was reported that Gaylon Dulock had sustained a broken leg, and his dad, Vernon Dulock, is slowly recovering and is able to be up and about with the aid of crutches. We want to wish them both continued good recovery and, to Sister Helen Dulock, the strength to nurse them back to good health.

I want to remind all members to come to the November 8th meeting; we will have election of officers and you are urged to attend and make your vote count.

The youth door prize went to Jamie Williams and adult door prize winner was Ernest Clemons.

The meeting was then adjourned, and a fried chicken supper was enjoyed by all. Until next time, I'm wishing all a smile and happy thoughts.

Roads Lead To Hillje Lodge 40 District VI Social

All

District VI Members: The members and officers of Lodge No. 40, El Campo - Hillje invite all of you to attend the District VI Social to be held at the Hillje Hall on Sunday, October 25, 1987. It would be wonderful to see someone from every lodge in the district present, especially. the officers, sales representatives and those on standing committees with the Supreme Lodge. You are the backbone of the lodges and your presence is important. An afternoon of fun and visiting is planned by the district officers and the hosting Lodge No. 40.

A catered noon meal will be served, and we ask that the members from all lodges bring a dessert to be served with the meal and for the afternoon coffee.

I need to know how many to prepare for, so I ask that the president of each lodge let me know how many will be attending from their lodge. Dear Brothers and Sisters: The lodge meeting was held Sunday, October 4 at 2 p.m. with Lodge 47 President Brother Jerry Pechal presiding.

Flag Bearers Tommy Gibson and Jason Reese, substituting for Amy

Kohutek, brought in the flags and led the pledge to the flag. We remained standing for a moment of silence for our deceased members, Brothers Henry L. Kabella and Joe H. Mikulas and Sister Frances Hejl. Sister Hejl was very active in lodge activities until her illness prevented her and her husband Emil from continuing to clean the hall, but came to the meetings when she was not in the hospital or feeling real bad. She was always very friendly and had a smile for everyone. We are missing her; so is her family. May all the deceased members rest in eternal peace and may their memories live among us forever.

To the bereaving families, we express our deepest sympathy.

Brother Pechal welcomed everyone to the meeting and recognized our five visitors Ann Balusek, Margie Turner, Joe Macek, Willie Hegar and Freddie Schroeder, in addition to the 76 lodge members.

Sister Delores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, trustees and sales representatives, and read the minutes of our previous meeting and these were approved.

Correspondence included a thank you letter to our lodge and members for donations of gifts and food and for everyone's presence at the District II Fun Carnival from DYC Frank Klinkovsky; a letter from Brother Bernie Gebala informing us of a - $100 incentive for the greatest membership increase until December 31st; a letter from Brother Howard Leshikar about the nomination of "Fraternalist of the Year:" Brother Jerry Mikulas' letter about the lodges that are on direct billing; an invitation from Pasadena Lodge No. 172 to the Gulf Coast Texas Czech Festival; a letter from Brother Jerry Mikulas informing us that we elect 14 delegates to the 1988 Convention; thank you cards from the family of Sister Frances Hejl for the flowers, visits and friendship and for the devotion to Memorial Fund; thank you cards from the family of Brother Joe J. Simek; also Sister Millie Lesikar's family and Sister Amalia Schneider's family for the flowers and memorials; a thank you card from Brother Alfred Klusacek for visits and get well cards while in the hospital; Sister Katherine Smith for visits and cards when she was hospitalized for 15 days and a thank you from Joshua Smith for the monetary gift from the lodge when representing Lodge No. 47 at District II and State YAD. Those who were sent get well cards were Sisters Vlasta Hruska, Lillie Maresh, Agnes De Palma, Theresa Chlapek and Brothers James Bartek, Alfred Klusacek and George Divis.

Sister Mary Kohutek has been hospitalized since the meeting. We hope everyone is recovering satisfactorily and will be able to return to their homes soon.

New members accepted were Thomas W., Jacob W., Michael D., and Margie E. Kamas and Dennis M. Moses. Toby Joe Rector converted a previous policy. Transferred into Lodge No. 47 were Frank W., Letha F., and Pamela Gale Marek, all from Lodge No. 24 and Robert L. Haisler, Jr. and Cynthia A. Haisler, both from Lodge No. 177. A warm welcome to each one named and may you all become active in lodge activities.

All the officers and chairpersons gave good reports. The Bell County Unit of Health Department had visited and gave us a good report.

The Audit Committee set the date for auditing the books of our chairpersons and officers for Wednesday, October 7th.

Brother Tim Reese, family social chairman, stated hamburger and French fries will be sold and all Halloween contestants will be judged at the next Family Night. He also showed the two trophies the Taroky Team won at New Tabor.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky reported 26 members, 2 visitors and 6 adults were present. They will have a spook house at Family Night and the youth are looking forward to the District II Skating Party, October 25th. They will be selling Tom Wat products, so if a Youth Club member calls on you, pick from the assortment of excellent gifts in the showcase and help them raise some money for their club.

The Salary Committee reported that all salaries remain at the present schedule. The Rules and Regulations were accepted as the committee had proposed them.

The Eligibility Committee was chosen. Those serving will be Rose Marie Orsag, Woodrow Marek and Vallie Zavodny. They will report in the November meeting who is eligible to hold office or be elected delegates to the next SPJST Convention.

Those observing birthdays in October are Brothers Dan Balusek, Albert Koslovsky, Louis Kohutek, Nick Morris and Frank Janacek and Sister Ruth Janacek. Wedding anniversaries will be celebrated by Edward and Lucy Mihatsch, Dan and Ann Balusek, Wallace and Elsie Jez, Robert and Evelyn Heese, Alfred and Martha Klusacek. Hope you had a "special day" and that you may have many, many more years of health and happiness.

The officers for 1988 and the delegates to the convention to be held at Temple in June 1988 will be elected. If time permits, the trustees will be elected, also. The chairpersons are elected in the December meeting.

Here's hoping we get some good rains so the small grains will grow and provide the cattle some good grazing.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our annual Czech Day celebration will be held this Sunday, October 25, 1987. Dear Members and Friends: We are in the best season of the year, Indian Summer, or be it Fall, Autumn or whatever your name for it.

There's a promise of security, of work almost done until Spring and long cozy evenings within the shelter of your choice. Perhaps this was the reason for the increase in attendance at our October meeting. The Youth Club began the activities by leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers' reports were given and approved. We welcomed one visitor, Mrs. A.E. Corcoran, mother of Youth Club Assistant Leader Cheryl Hubenak and also "almost visitors" Dan and Jo Ellen Kubala.

All attending members with October birthdays were recognized. Martha.

Durham reported sending 16 birthday cards to senior citizen members. She also sent congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Jon Whatley who became parents of a son, thus making Dona Hubenak a great - grandmother for the first time.

Sharon Tesar, niece of Frank Tesar, was wed to Robert Stone. Frank, along with wife, Marie, will celebrate their 48th wedding anniversary in a few days.

Hospital patients included Mary Ann Kozel and Margaret Kratky. We all express our sympathy to the family of S.P. Lindsey. Mr. Lindsey's wife, Alice, is a sister of Clara Cohen and Annie Langer and a relative of several other members. We were also sorry to learn of the death of Al Corcoran, father of Cheryl Hubenak and grandfather of Melissa and Holly Hubenak.

John Paprskar reported that Czech classes will begin on October 20th.

There most likely will be a beginner's class and an intermediate class. Frank Kovar will instruct one class and the other will be led by a TCJC instructor.

The classes will be on Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. and will accommodate 20 to 22 persons. Please sign up soon.

Gordon Hubenak reminded us to try to participate in the activities of the Halloween Dance on October 31st.

The Youth Club always works with the adults on this project so that everyone has a good time.

There will be prizes in three age groups for costumes and also awards for best - decorated cakes made by adults and by different age groups of children. Please donate a cake even if you do not compete for a prize. Simple cakes are appreciated as well as the fancier ones.

A notice to remember for the November meeting: because of the election of officers and delegates to the convention, we will begin our meeting at 1 p.m. instead of the customary 2 p.m. This is always a significant gathering, so we hope to see as many as possible present at this earlier time for November only.

CVCH Society Changes Meeting Date The Concho Valley Czech Heritage Society composed of Runnels, Tom Green and Concho Counties, have changed their meeting date from October 18 to October 25 at 2 p.m. in the Wall Fire Hall at Wall, Texas.

There will also be an election of officers for the coming year. All members and any interested persons are asked to please attend this important meeting.

ST— Greetings To Vestnik From Czechoslovakia We are sending our warmest greetings to the Vestnik from Czechoslovakia; we, who are on the People to People Agricultural Tour with Rudy Klecka's Klub Kontinental Group, send greetings from Slugovice Jednotne zemedelske dru2stvo area of Czechoslovakia located in a beautiful area of Moravia. The people have been gracious and eager to please us in every way. We have been visiting the facilities on the JZD Cooperative Farms; this includes the dairy feedlots, canning, dry fruit, processing poultry, orchards and vineyards' operations including, of course, the winery. Also we went to see the beautiful horses of which many have won derbies and also saw their race tracks.

We have had an occasion to visit with many of the people and have thoroughly enjoyed the free exchange of information and the ideas between us and them. We have been allowed unlimited access to people and places and, for this, we are indeed grateful.

There are some 25 persons of Czech descent and all have enjoyed the opportunity to see the places of origin of our forefathers and we are very grateful for this. The people are very patient with our linguistic capabilities and are surprised as well as glad that we still claim our Czech language after so long a time.

We would urge anyone with a similar background to make the same journey as we have because we consider the experience priceless and enriching.

The 15th Kulhanek reunion was held on Sunday, September 27, 1987 at Sts. Peter and Paul Dining Hall in Frelsburg. Holy Mass for deceased family members was celebrated at 10 a.m. by Monsignor Bockholt assisted

by Deacon Jerry Kulhanek of Galena Park at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Serving as lectors were Leonard Kulhanek of Houston and Robert Socha of Frelsburg. Gift bearers were Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Seidel and Jennifer of Frelsburg.

Registration began at 11 a.m. followed by a basket lunch served at 12:30 p.m. Deacon Jerry Kulhanek led the prayer before the meal.

Leonard Kuihanek, historian, spoke briefly about updating the Kulhanek Family History Book. Copies of the book may be purchased from him for $7 each plus $2.50 postage and handling for mail orders. Relatives attending were recognized in family groups as the descendants of Frank, Joseph, Maurice, Albert, Anton Kulhanek, and Marie Kuihanek Canik, five of the children of Antonin and Celestina Kuihanek.

Also recognized were the oldest male and female relatives attending, Mr. Joe Janish of Fayetteville, age 88 years and Mrs. Albina Krenek of Wallis, age 95 years.

The longest - married couple present were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Janish who were married 64 years. The most recently - married couple present were Chad and Susie Kuihanek of La Grange, married 3 months.

The youngest person present was four - month - old Cory Halfmann, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Halfmann of New Ulm. Traveling the longest distance to the reunion was David Kuihanek of Copperas Cove, Texas.

A drawing for door prizes was held.

The winners were Pete Kulhanek, Mary Goering, Chad Kulhanek, Kenneth Kuihanek, Mary Janish, Anna Supak, Vlasta Korenek, David Kulhanek and Betty Kuihanek.

The fall meeting and fun carnival is about all we have left as a district wide activity this year. It will be held at Lodge 187, Round Rock on September 20th, so please set this date aside and plan to be there. The youth were learning a Czech song and one action song at camp and they will plan to sing these for you at the fall meeting, plus many other activities just now being planned and full details at a later date.

A big THANK YOU to all leaders, assistants, chaperones, parents and friends who brought the youth to camp and back and to all leaders/chaperones for doing a fine job in making camp a happy experience for our youth and everyone who helped with every activity, plus to the youth for attending. At the monthly meeting of our club, we had a very interesting program by Mr. Richard Kovar who told us about the American flag and what it stands for. Then he showed us the proper way to dispose of an American flag when it can no longer be used.

Our club participated in the "Fun Day" at New Tabor last Sunday. We

Box 3 Snook, Texas 77878 [Lodge 9; District I] The gifts of heart and mind are widely spread all over the universe and the feeling of truth, love, and justice are instilled in most men. Because of this assumption, one can conclude that common sense and fair judgment in politics and religion is the highest authority on earth and is the best means of providing equal protection under the man - made laws of our land.

Upon the belief that there was a discoverable order in the universe that should govern in the affairs of man the same way it governs in the world of nature, the "Founding Fathers" realized that their duty was to understand the divine purpose and assist this purpose by establishing a mechanical device such as a constitution. Keeping in mind the formula, human selfishness times power equals corruption, and wanting to provide equal protection of the law, the writers of the constitution devised a government with a limited system of checks and balances under which none of the three branches of the government received absolute jurisdiction within its own field. They believed that the so vereignit y of people could be preserved by separation of the legislative, executive, and judicial arms of the government.

The United States political system is one of reason, reflection, and expression of deliberate choice.

Individuals who join to form public opinion may be insincere, fearless, blind, corrupt, or of limited wisdom, but true government regards with respect that the masses can distinguish between good and evil. Housewives, farmers, actors, cab drivers, doctors, nurses, ministers, and teachers, together with highly - educated lawyers all constitute the opinion we as United States citizens respect. The opinion is not of one or of a few -- but the sagacity of many.

We, as Americans; appreciate the pervasive influence of the constitution in the lives of all Americans. Whether an accused killer insisting on his "constitutional rights," or an

American minority fighting Thr those rights guaranteed under the supreme law of the land, the Constitution is daily invoked. Vendors selling their wares have questioned the legality of local and city ordinances forbidding them to do so. Strolling park musicians and poets have been known to cite "lack of freedom of speech" when told by authorities to cease their work. High school students resisting local school codes have gone into courts challenging the authorities claiming infringement of their constitutional rights. Even the prisoner on death row has waited for the Supreme Court to decide the constitutional legality of the death penalty. All these Americans are conscious of their relationship to the constitution. In the United States, no ordinance is passed without accordance with legal principles that were laid down 200 years ago by a few politicians who had assumed responsibility for establishing a government to guide the affairs of millions of people.

When an individual is wronged in the United States, where does he go for help? First place he turns is to his peers or the public. The public opinion, if favorable, leads him to consult a member of the legal profession. If pressed, he moves on through the courts - all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary. In this manner, the laws of the land have been interpreted and enforced. Imagine a world without this type of array!

The Watergate scandal is a prime example of just how well the constitution instills confidence in the American notion that our laws are written and enforced to provide equal protection to all people. This scandal reminded the American people of the existence and importance of the document that shaped us in our formative years. Even the president of the United States with all his executive powers was subjected to public pressure demanding that justice be done. Through television, newspapers, and magazines, the American people were informed about the nature and past experience with impeachment.

People were impressed and awed. The constitution placed the president on the same footage as all Americans, within the law - not above it. The constitution had reached over all the intervening years and forced a president out of office. Ironically, this particular president had just been elected by one of the largest majorities in our history.

The public's happiness is the true goal of legislation and can be secured only by mankind taking care of their own interests. By reversing false and unworthy distinction between men and refusing to give in to social klans, our constitutional laws make known that the common mind is the true material for the making of a great nation. Our nation advances through the culture of the moral and intellectual powers of all people. We, the people, accomplishing this end, have therefore established the highest purpose of government. The government, by the people, of the people, and for the people, is the strongest government in the world.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club Dear Readers, The October 13, 1987 meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was called

to order at 7:40 p.m. by President Janet Macek.

Michelle and Kindra Mikeska led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

The register was read. There were 20 members present and 4 adults. Chad Bruggrnan was our guest.

Our fund - raiser will be a barbecue chicken dinner with all the trimmings on November 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost of the ticket will be $4 and may be purchased in advance from a youth member or at the door.

Each youth member's family is asked to bring 5 pounds of cooked and diced potatoes to Flag Hall on November 7th. Also bring 2 desserts on November 8th to the hall.

All youth members are to sell their tickets and help out at the barbecue. If we all work together, this can be a great success.

On November 15th, we will bring crafts to a nursing home for Thanksgiving. We will have a work day before this day.

Our social will be the District 11 Skating Party at Skate Haven, from 5 to 7 p.m. on October 25th. Everyone is urged to dress up for Halloween and come out.

Door prizes were won by Michelle Mikeska and Michael Harvell.

Birthdays in October are for Carl Macek (October 9th) and Melanie Zavodny (October 22nd). Happy Brthday!

Dear Members, The Youth Club of Lodge No. 29 met on Sunday, October 11 at 3 p.m.

There were 15 members and 6 adults present at the meeting.

Youth Leader Donna Vanecek announced to our club that there will be a District II Skating Party on Sunday, October 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. in Temple at Skate Haven. All members may bring a guest. There will be a costume contest with prizes going to the prettiest, ugliest and funniest.

Those wishing to go are asked to meet at Lodge No. 29 at 3:45 p.m.

Our club social will be a lock - in on Friday, October 30 at Lodge No. 29.

This will be held from 8:30 p.m.

Friday until 7 a.m. Saturday. Guests are invited to join the members. We usually have a great time. There will be games to play, movies to watch, a spook house and lots of food to eat.

Wear your costumes because there will be a costume contest. We also will have a pumpkin carving contest. You must have your pumpkin already carved before you arrive at the hall.

A report was given by Youth Leader Donna Vanecek on our fund - raiser that we just completed. Our Youth Club sold $4,106 worth of Tom Watts merchandise. Several of the orders have already been filled and the rest are on order. They should be delivered around October 30th. We really appreciate the local support that we receive. Wal - Mart in Taylor was especially helpful by donating 100 paper bags to help with filling our orders.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, November 8 at 2 p.m. Note the change in time because we are meeting one hour earlier. We sure hope that the

members who were absent due to illness will be able to be with us.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the officers and members of SPJST Lodge No. 39, Bryan, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother STANLEY S. MACIK,

of 2104 Northside Drive, Bryan, Texas, who passed away Monday in a local hospital after a lengthy illness at the age of 54.

A funeral service was held at 10 a.m.

Thursday at Faith United Church of

Christ in Bryan with the Rev. Norman Sirnic officiating. Burial was in Rest Ever Memorial Park. A prayer service was held at 8 p.m. today at Memorial Funeral Chapel.

Brother Macik, born in Burleson County, had been a Bryan resident for 33 years. He retired in 1984 as an upholstery cutter at International Furniture. He was a member of Teamsters' Union Local No. 968, SPJST Lodge No. 39 in Brazos County, and Faith United Church of Christ. He was a former member of the Coon Hunter's Association.

His favorite hobbies included fishing and all phases of hunting. He was an avid coon hunter. During the last few years, he greatly enjoyed taking his grandchildren fishing and hunting with him. His wife, Evelyn Macik, said her husband had always cooked since she had known him. He loved to cook for his family and other

people as well. He was disabled the past 5 years and he did most of the cooking until 2 weeks ago. He loved people and was always inviting someone to come over. He will be remembered by everyone as a man who would "walk a mile for a smile."

Brother Macik was a regular listener of "Muck and Mire." He enjoyed calling in and announcing birthdays, wedding anniversaries and sharing a joke with "Muck and Mire."

He was preceded in death by a brother, Clem Macik in 1973; a sister, Evelyn Paul, in 1985; and his father, Alfred Macik, in 1982.

May he rest in eternal peace.

Sister Mollie was born November 16, 1894 to Alois and Mary (Toman) Urbanec in East Bernard. She spent her last 11 years in a nursing home in Dallas. She died September 2, 1987.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Betty Urbanec Slovacek Tucker of La Habra, California, Mrs. Martin (Gertrude) Schultz of Austin, Texas; two daughters - in - law, Mrs. Macy Ann Martinak and Dorothy L. Martinak; four grandchildren, Mrs. Jeanne Martinak Redmond, Michael Richard Martinak, Mrs. Toni Martinak Wallace, Mrs. Connie five great Martinak Cole; grandchildren, James Richard Redmond, Donald Kellum Redmond, Ann Elizabeth Redmond, Jayne R. Martinak and Michael Robert Martinak; also numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Sister Bridwell was buried in Dallas, Texas.

Their children, Mr. and Mrs. R.P. Chervenka, were hosts for a family dinner party at the Hyatt Regency in Austin, Texas.

Edwin married the former Dorothy Louise Holcomb on October 1, 1937 in

Temple. The Reverend L.B. Reaves of Temple per formed the marriage ceremony.

Mr. and Mrs. Chervenka have lived in Temple most of their lives.

Golden Anniversary Celebrants Mr. and Mrs. Henry Grossman of West, Texas celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. on October 11 at the First United Church Annex and Pine and Davis Streets in West.

Hosting the reception were the couple's children, Nancy and Jerry Vidrine of West and Gordon Grossman of Plano.

Henry and the former Mildred Heitmiller were married on October 9, 1937 at St. Peter's Evangelical Church

near West.

Mr. Grossman is a retired nursing assistant of West Community Hospital and a farmer. Mrs. Grossman is a retired seamstress of the Lorch Company and a homemaker.

They have four grandchildren, Mark Riggins, Jeremy Vidrine, Gregory and Ginger Grossman.

Many relatives and friends came to help Henry and Mildred celebrate.

V Polsku v tu dobu vlacil Vladislav II Jagello, 1386 a2 1434, (unie s Litvou od to doby existovala a2 do roku 1569).

Behem vlady tohoto panovnika v Polsku, dodo v roce 1410 k bitve u Grunwaldu ye VYchodnim Prusku, kde byl Polaky a jejich spojenci pora2en fad nemeckYch rytifu. Mezi Cechy pornahajicimi to PolakUrn byl i Jan Zi2ka, pozdej gi skvelY vojev6dce hushskYch vojsk. V roce 1420 Husite volali VladislaVa II Jagello na 6eskY trim.

Tento polskY kral vyslal do Cech sveho vzdaleneho pfibuzneho Zikmunda Korybutoviee. Zikmund Korybutovie byl synovcem Vitolda, kterY byl bratl-ancem Vladislava II Jagellonskeho. V letech 1434 ai 1444 vladl v Polsku syn pfedegleho. Mladgi bratr Vladislava III, Kazimir, byl knaetem litevskYm.

Pak panoval v Polsku v letech 1444-1492 Kazimir IV Velik9, kter9 znieil nemecke kfi2aky a VYchocini Prusko se stalo lenem polska koruny.

Nejstar g i syn Kazimira IV jmenem Vladislav se stal v roce 1471, po smrti eeskeho krale Jifiho z Podebrad, kralem eeskYm, a roku 1490 i kralem uherskYm. Jagellonci byli pak na vrcholu moci; v Polsku a v Litve vladla polska vetev tohoto rodu, v eeskem kralovstvi a v Mad'arsku vladli tak zvani ee g ti Jagellonci. V zemich svatovacla y ske koruny (to je v Cechach, na Morava, v Hornim a v Dolnim Slersku, v Kladsku a v Horni i Doln1 Lu2ici), vzrostl v tu dobu blahobyt; mesta se rychle zvedla z bidy obeanskYch valek a zahy konkurovala glechte y e shonu za penezi. Slechta, nechtic se nechat me'sty pfedstihnout, se pougtela do podnikani, jet dfive nale2elo jen me gtanum, a rovne2 v zernedelstvi vynalezala jine cesty: vykupovala, obeas i nasilim, selske statky, zcelovala pudu, zakladala oveince, sady, cihelny, rybniky a pivovary, a usazovala ve vsich femeslniky. (Bylo mu zakazano se stehovat bez svoleni panu a nesmel se dovolavati prava proti vrchnosti.) Vnuk dfivejgfho eeskeho krale Jifiho z Podebrad, Bartolomej MinsterberskY, byl na strane mast; v tu dobu vypukly v rnznych mistech stare vlasti selske boufe; jeden z vtldc6 techto nepokojil, Dalibor z Kozojed, byl veznen pak ye ve2i nazvane Daliborka v Praze. Doba Vladislava II byla tak zvanou dobou "vladislayske gotiky." Nejznamejgi dilo teto doby je Vladisla y skY sal na Hradeanech, jet byl vybudovan v letech 1487 a2 1502. Nejznarnejgi stavitele "vladisla yske goticky" byli Beneg Rejt a Matoug ei Matej Rejsek.
