REMEMBER your district meetings with enjoyable entertainment for all ages, all the same day October 25th: District III at Lodge 154, Fort Worth District VI at Lodge 40, El Campo Hillje District VII at Lodge 107, Floresville *** Wednesday, October 7, the editor planned to attend the third quarterly SL Board meeting which had begun the day before. However, that plan was very abruptly changed by a call from our Supreme Lodge stating that the meeting had been postponed to a later date in October; the reason -- the sad, sudden and rather shocking news that District I Director Ben Trcalek had died in his motel room the night before (Tuesday night). He was found Wednesday morning by his fellow directors when he failed to answer.

From all indications, at the time of these lines being written, the cause was a heart attack, and evidently, came suddenly. Naturally, it was a shock, because, at the evening meal, he appeared in the best of health. Such are the calls of Fate, which does not give much warning!

Brother Trcalek will be remembered by all who knew him as a loyal, quiet mannered, deliberative, fraternal, soft - spoken and level - headed individual who was always a pleasant fraternalist to be associated with. There is so much that could be eulogized about him, however, his deeds in the service of his country, community, our SPJST Society, and his fellow citizens speak better in his behalf than any words this writer could place on paper.

Brother Trcalek's funeral service was scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, October 9 at the Caldwell Brethren Church with burial following.

Our SPJST has indeed lost a dedicated fraternal director and CEFT, a trustworthy treasurer .

On behalf of the Supreme Lodge, our entire membership and editor, sincere sympathy is expressed to the surviving loved ones. May honor and respect, in our memories of Brother Trcalek, live forever! ***

SMOKEOUT The Fabulous Thunderbirds, an Austin - based blues - rock quartet, will act as the honorary "spokesband" for the Great American Smokeout in Texas, American Cancer Society officials announced today at a news conference in Austin.

Guitarist Jimmie Vaughan, bassist Preston Hubbard and drummer Fran Christina -- all smokers -- will try to do without cigarettes November 19, the

former smoker.

We think it's entirely appropriate that a Texas band which rose to national fame on the strength of a song called "Tuff E' Nuff" is proving just how tough it is by accepting our challenge to abstain from smoking November 19, said John Frankhouser of Lubbock, state volunteer chairman of the Great American Smokeout in Texas.

The Great American Smokeout is sponsored by the American Cancer Society each year the third Thursday in November. It is a light - hearted event to encourage smokers to try quitting for 24 hours.

According to a Gallup survey, 23.7 million American smokers quit or cut down during last year's Great American Smokeout.

The band's example will help reach young Texas smokers who may not have considered quitting for health reasons, Frankhouser said. We know smokers will relate to other smokers who are trying to quit...the whole purpose of the Smokeout is to give smokers an opportunity to try quitting in an atmosphere of support and good will, he said.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds will be featured in a 30 - second television public service announcement for the Smokeout to be distributed statewide.

In the spot, the T - Birds encourage others to join them in the Great American Smokeout by saying...we think you are tough enough to quit, too.

American Cancer Society units around the state are currently planning local celebrations to mark the observance of the Great American Smokeout. ***

The coming of cool autumn winds may be pushing you to find ways to make your home more comfortable in cold weather and hold down heating bills. Of course, the easiest way to conserve energy is to lower the thermostat setting to 65 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit while you are awake and 50 to 60 degrees while you are in bed. But many people find this too cool. In fact, infants, the elderly and the infirm risk hypothermia below 65 degrees.

Another way to cut your heating bill while actually making your home more comfortable is to weatherproof your doors and windows. There are a number of techniques that won't break your budget, such as door sweeps, weatherstripping and storm doors and windows. ***

Job seekers would do best to keep their resumes brief, truthful, neat and relevant, according to a recent survey of personnel officers at 100 of the nation's largest companies. In terms of length, 65 percent of those surveyed thought that the resumes for top executives and middle management should be 2 pages -- no shorter and no longer. Fifty - five percent thought that resumes for staff - level employees should be no more than one page in length. The greatest mistakes made on job resumes, said survey participants, are: Distortions or lies about accomplishments (36 percent); an overlong _document (21 percent); typographical errors and misspellings (19 percent); insufficient detail (12 percent) irrelevant material and failure to cite job accomplishments (10 percent). Only 2 percent faulted some resumes for being too short.

Since the meal will be catered, each lodge is asked to send the total number of persons planning to attend from their lodge. Please send this total to: Rita Vanek, W. Norris Street, El Campo, Texas 77437 before October 21, 1987. So that this would be truly a district affair, each family attending is asked to bring a dessert.

In addition, a "Wheel of Fortune Game" will be played and each family is asked to contribute two pantry items and one youth item.

This will be our first attempt to have a full social meeting. Encourage the members of your lodge to attend and participate in the activities on October 25th.

Minutes Of District V Fall Meeting September 20, 1987 The fall meeting of District V was held September 20, 1987 at Lodge No. 88 in Houston, Texas. All officers were present, including District V Director Jerry Prochazka.

Special guests from the Supreme Lodge were Brother Leonard Mikeska and his wife, Dorothy; also, in attendance was Brother Matt Vanek, District VI director.

A brief business session was conducted. On motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, Lodge No. 142 in Houston will host the District V spring meeting in March, 1988.

The meal for this meeting consisted of barbecue chicken furnished by District V and the remainder of the meal was covered dishes and desserts brought by those attending. Food was more than ample, and many expressed their enjoyment of the food and fellowship. Accordian music, before and during the meal, was played by Jerry Hurta of Lodge 88.

The program consisted of presentation of colors by Paul Pflughaupt and Keith Kieschnick, and they led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Sister Helen Hegwood gave beautiful renditions of "The Star Spangled Banner" and "Kde Domov Muj," accompanied by Sister Naomi Spencer.

A number of paintings painted by members were brought and were placed in three categories: Landscapes, Flowers, and Still Life. The judges were Alice Souchek and Doris Deutsch. Winners in Landscapes were Agnes Cheney, Alice Braikovich , and Edna Wehring. In Flowers, they were

Several very well - written skits by our own District V President Tillie Helmcamp were presented and performed by various members of Lodge 88 and Lodge 142. These were quite humorous and much enjoyed by all.

Sister Hegwood sang "Blue Skirt Waltz" and "God Bless America," as well as a couple of songs in the Czech language, and asked the audience to join her in the singing.

Door prizes were drawn for. There were a number of gifts such as a windbreaker, dominoes, tie, cap and cup, as well as $60 in cash donated by various members and given in $5 individual gifts.

The District VII Family Social will be held at the Lodge No. 107 Hall on FM 1303 Road near Floresville, Texas on October 25, 1987. Everyone in the district is welcome to come.

We will have fresh sausage, smoked turkey and a lot of other goodies to go with it; this will be at no charge, the food will be ready at 11:30 a.m.

Games are planned for the afternoon.

Lodge 33, Bleiblerville Annual Fish Fry The annual Fall Fish Fry will be held Sunday, October 18, 1987 at the Bleiblerville SPJST Hall located on FM Road 2502. [here will be tried fish sold to go at 9 a.m. for the noon meal, serving will Domino Tournament winners were the team of Doris Godwin and Frankie Blanton. Event Coordinator Johnnie I. Krajca awarded the trophies.

Winning Domino Teams were: 1st -Doris Godwin and Frankie Blanton; 2nd -- Sam Bass and Allan Prachyl; 3rd -- George Zhanel and George Prachyl.

Fund- raisers earmarked to benefit the Ellis County Child Welfare program were especially successful, announced Lodge 25 President Kenneth Krajca. The cake auction was officiated by Mr. Gentry Holmes.

Many lovely cakes were donated by the lodge ladies. The donations were arranged by the Lodge 25 Welfare Committee and ticket sales were coordinated by the Lodge 25 Youth Club under the direction of Linda Trojacek.

Roads Lead To Hillje Lodge 40 District VI Social

District VI Members: The members and officers of Lodge No. 40, El Campo - Hillje invite all of you to attend the District VI Social to be held at the Hillje Hall on Sunday, October 25, 1987. It would be wonderful to see someone from every lodge in the district present, especially the officers, sales representatives and those on standing committees with the Supreme Lodge. You are the backbone of the lodges and your presence is important. An afternoon of fun and visiting is planned by the district officers and the hosting Lodge No. 40.

A catered noon meal will be served, and we ask that the members from all lodges bring a dessert to be served with the meal and for the afternoon coffee.

News From Lodge 172, Pasadena Dear SPJST Members: Time is drawing near for the first annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival.

First, I want to point out this event is a festival not a fest; strictly and only a Czech Festival, no commercial or other ethnic groups involved co sponsored by three Czech organizations, namely, SPJST Rozkvet Lodge No. 172, Harris County Czech Heritage Society, and the San Jacinto Czech Club.

There will be something for everyone; singing, dancing, drinking and eating. You are welcome to come and enjoy the weekend with the friendliest Czech lodge in Texas.

Details will follow in later issues of the Vestnik.

Several of our faithful, hard working fraternal members have retired and moved away from Pasadena; for instance, the Greens moved to Arkansas, the Hugos to New Risingers to the Braunfels, Madisonville, the Taneckas to Lampasas, and the Berrys to Livingston. We are fortunate that they have kept their membership with us.

This means that others of us here at Lodge 172 have to put in more time to maintain our lodge. I would like to invite more of our members to get involved, come attend our meetings, attend our socials, attend our dances, and meet your fellow members. I promise if you do, you will meet some of the nicest people and you will return again and again.

Several of the larger firms near Pasadena have booked rentals for their parties and dances at our lodge and the balance of the year we are looking forward for them to enjoy our facilities over the holidays.

Our Saturday night dances are still drawing good crowds and, rightly so, we have some very good entertaining bands in our Grand Ballroom: The River Road Boys played October 10th; Pure Texas is booked for October 17th, the Texas Brew on October 24th. On October 31st we have the Wilderness Band with the Repkas playing country/western and polkas. This band is drawing larger crowds each time they appear.

Donnie Wavra will be on the bandstand Saturday night, November 7th playing polkas and waltzes for the Czech Festival weekend. Sunday, November 8th polka and waltz music will be furnished by Ray Krenek from Wallis and LeRoy's Swinging Band from Hallettsville.

Lodge No. 172, Pasadena wishes to express their deepest sympathy to the following families: John and 011ie Brice on the loss of their granddaughter, Michelle Moore; Mr. and Mrs. V.R. Malek on the death of their son, Ralph; Henrietta and Ciarence Fee on the loss of her mother, Frances Sliva; and the family of Adolph Dusek on his passing away.

In our August meeting, members chose Brother Victor Peter as "Fraternalist of the Year" for Lodge No. 172 and we are sure he will be represented and acknowledged as a good choice.

Dear Members and Friends: First of all, we. at Lodge No. 172 hope that everybody everywhere is well

by now'. There were so many of us under the weather with all , kinds of illnesses. We wish all a speedy recovery and take it easy for a while.

There is much work to do and it seems never to get done because when one thing is finished something else comes up: We have stopped all the leaks, fixed all the air - conditioners that needed fixing, polished and buffed the dance floor, fixed up the outside sign, bought some office furniture and a new lawnmower and are now repairing the parking lot.

Thanks to all you hard workers for all you do around here.

The New Year's Eve tickets are on sale, so please buy yours early! We will have blackeyed peas with sausage and cornbread. There will be hats and noisemakers.

We have a wonderful Entertainment Committee who tries to make everyone who comes here comfortable at all the activities. We hope to be seeing many of you as often as you can come, also come to our meetings. We always enjoy our meetings, especially, at refreshment time after the meeting.

We get to meet new members or those members who come for the first time.

Our regular monthly meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Come and bring your children, especially those of school age. If, somehow, we could get together we could start a youth club.

Let it be known that you have someone at home who could be coming with you. We have a youth room ready for them. If 2 or 3 of you let us know that you are bringing children, the youth leader or someone else would be expecting you and be ready for the children, too!

Our big event will be the Gulf Coast Czech Festival on November 7th and 8th. Watch for details. There will be so many activities taking part, dancers, singers, bands from different places.

There will be plenty to eat and drink so do try to come and watch for more detailed schedule for that day or rather two days, it will all be announced in the Vestnik. This will be held at Lodge No. 172 in Pasadena.

This Festival is co - sponsored by Harris County Czech Heritage Society and San Jacinto Czech Club. We are looking for this to be a successful undertaking with so many participants from near and far. The Czech Educational Foundation of Texas will have a booth and someone to explain what it is all about. It is encouraging that so many Czechs and others are contributing to this undertaking. As many of you already know that it will take $500,000 to endow a permanent chair of Czech studies (language and Czech culture) at either the Texas A&M University or University of Texas in Austin. When we raise the $500,000 one of those universities (whichever will be selected) will match the $500,000. This is something of which we should all be proud, just to know that we are about half way there with our half of the contributions.

Some individuals have contributed to this project more than just once and many more are planning to do so, individually, as well as through their organizations. It seems that the last half should be down hill and much easier. Let's keep it rolling with whatever contribution we are able to give, large or small, they all add up! I don't believe there is a deadline on this and everyone is welcome to contribute; you don't have to be of Czech - Moravian descent! (If I made a mistake in explaining this, I hope someone will call my attention to it.)

Let's hope the hot days of summer are behind us and cool autumn days

are here to refresh us and prepare us for a nice cold winter. Here in Pasadena, we don't have much cold weather; it hardly every snows, but isn't it nice to have warm houses, warm cars, and good all - weather roads and go just about everywhere we want to go at anytime.

Here is hoping that we do have nice weather for the Gulf Coast Czech Festival on November 7th and 8th and hope to see you all.

Dear Members and Friends: The monthly meeting was held at our lodge on September 15 at 7:30 p.m. The minutes of the August meeting were read and approved. All other reports were given and also approved.

Our get well wishes go to a son - in law of Brother Ernest and Sister Nancy Kelly, who was involved in a motorcycle accident but, at last report, was feeling much better; also to Henry Denson Dueser who has been having problems for some time and now has had surgery, but I am happy to report he, too, is feeling better. Henry is my brother - in - law. We also extend our get well° wishes to all others on the sick list.

It is time for election of our officers for 1988. The Nominating Committee consist of Jerry Janek, Estelle Hurtik, and Mydell Grochoske. I hope we get a good slate of officers so our lodge can go forward even stronger.

The Fall District III meeting will be held Sunday, October 25, 1987 and it will be hosted by Lodge 154, Fort Worth at 6500 Boat Club Road, so make plans to attend.

The 47th Czechoslovak Day at the State Fair in Dallas will take place Sunday, October 18th. Activities start at 10:30 a.m. and will be held in the Band Shell Auditorium. Make plans to attend and help celebrate Texas Czech Heritage.

Lodge 180 will be hosting the Christmas Party for the four sister Lodges 92, 154, 180 and 183 this year.

The date is set for December 13th. A meal will be served from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. and music for dancing will be by Harold Strand of Waco.

The meeting adjourned with our President Louis Grochoske winning the door prize. It really is getting to be a habit, Louis!

Our Board of Trustees' meetings are held the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. and our regular meeting is on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Come to our meetings and join our fellowship.

Remember our country - western dances every Saturday night -- dancing from 8:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m.

If you see some one without a "smile" give them one.

88, Houston Czech Class Report Lodge

"Ef yo' ain't got nothin,' yo' ain't got nothin' to lose." The converse of this quote rings true with our Czech class at Lodge 88, Houston. Of our 30 students all have something to lose, so they come to class to reinforce what Czech background they have inherited.

Very few will become orators or writers, but, by and large, they come because somewhere deep inside their memories lays a dormant desire to nurture their "Ceske dedictvl".

Finally, don't become discouraged with Czech grammar, conjugation and sentence structure! All of this is seasoned with: "Kam de g?, Jak se dere pefi?, Mam to rad."

Should you not be registered into a Czech class, don't allow your brain to run in neutral all the time. Use it every moment. Someday you may become a very good ambassador to Czechoslovakia! Who knows?

From The District Youth Counselor District II Fall Skating Party The date is October 25, 1987 at Skate Haven in Temple which is located on North 31st Street (north of the Temple High School), from 5 to 7 p.m. This is a Halloween Party and we will be giving cash prizes to the winners of the prettiest, ugliest, and funniest dressed youth.

For the rest of us who do not wish to compete in the costume prizes, we hope you will have something orange or black because these are the colors for this party; sew on an orange or black patch or wear something in that color.

We hope to have a good attendance, as usual, and so you will be allowed to bring a friend and we hope you will ask your friend to join our SPJST and your Youth Club.

Door prizes will also be given. Be sure you make plans to attend and see the rest of your friends you made at camp. See you there!

142, Houston YC Meeting

Lodge

Dear Readers, The Lodge 142 Youth Club held their monthly meeting on Wednesday, September 30, 1987 at 6:30 p.m. There were nine members and three adults present.

We had one new member, Kevin Hermis, to join our Youth Club.

We discussed several fund raisers.

We decided to have a drawing which will be held on December 13 at the lodge's annual meeting. We will be making tickets so, at our next Youth Club meeting, we will cut and assemble them. We will also have a cake sale at the next adult lodge meeting; those bringing pastries will be Amanda Hermis, Keith Kieschnick, and Tammy Pat ke.

Our social for the month was decided to go ice skating. We planned to meet at the lodge on October 12 at 7 p.m. so we all could try our ice skating skills.

Our meeting adjourned and all of us went out to eat pizza. See you at our next meeting.

Lodge No. 6 Cottonwood Youth Club Meeting Dear Members and Friends, The Youth Club meeting was held October 4, 1987 after the Lodge No. 6 meeting with a fair attendance.

On September 20 the club members, parents and youth leaders went to Six Flags. They all had a good time and it was a very pretty day. Those who didn't go missed a good time.

The youth made Halloween pumpkins and their Halloween Party will be Friday, October 30, with refreshments and games. They also plan to have a costume contest and bring a friend.

Lodge 6 Youth Club brought cakes to the West Rest Haven, donated items to St. Martin's Church Picnic, also baked goods for St. Paul's Bazaar.

They are invited to the St. Martin's, at Tours, CD Halloween Party on October 31st. It certainly is nice to invite our youth and leaders. Thank you!

Saturday, October 31, the youth club will have a bake sale at Nemecek Brothers Meat Market from 9 a.m. until ?? All the youth members are asked to bring their baked goods. This will be our money - making project.

The club will start working on Christmas items and Christmas Program.

Lanette Hykel had a birthday in October. Susan Hrabal brought the cake, and Tammi Dobecka will bring a cake in November.

A Thank You Officers and Lodge Supreme Members: Let me take this opportunity to say that I'm honored and pleased to serve as your SPJST State Queen for the next year.

I want to thank my parents, Youth Leaders Betty Schoenemann and Ann Schoeneman, and DYC Susan Skrabanek for their help and support in reaching this goal.

I have had a chance to attend the West fest Parade and the Kolache Festival in Caldwell. It was a lot of fun!

Let me say that if 1 can help you or your lodge in any way this coming year, please let Mrs. Reese, or me know. With youth activities in local lodges this can be a good way to introduce other youth and their parents to the opportunities that are available by becoming a member of the SPJST. I'm looking forward to a good year!

88, Houston YC Meeting

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The meeting of the Lodge 88 Youth Club was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by our President Crystal Wallace.

Vice President Darlene Migl led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. We remained standing for a moment of silence fox the good of our members.

Our Secretary Marlene Migl read the register. There were 19 members present at the meeting. We have one new member, Renee Roznovsky. We also had one guest present, Jessica Darrington. Our secretary then read

the minutes of our last meeting. There were no corrections or additions to the minutes.

Treasurer Karl Pflughaupt had no report.

The youth then decided on their next social; we will be going to Tradewinds Roller Rink for a roller skating party.

We will meet there at 1:45 p.m. Before we skate, we will hold a brief meeting for our Halloween dance and party in October. Please come early for this meeting. I hope to see you all there!

Remember we will be having our Beseda practices every Thursday evening at the lodge at 7:30 p.m.

Dear Members, Our youth club held a fund - raiser on Friday, September 25th and Saturday, September 26th. We had two booths at the Bohemian Fest which were darts and ring - the - bottle of coke. We made about $200.

Lodge 88, Houston YC Activities Dear Brothers and Sisters: On September 20, 1987, the District V Youth Club held a fund - raising project during the annual Family Day at Lodge 88 in Houston. The youth also participated in a few skits and dialogues. Members who participated with the skits were Karl and Paul Pflughaupt, with an introduction to the Family Day, Lindsey Michalek and Jamie Meyer made a cake, and our District V Youth Counselor Marie Stayton starred in a play entitled "Blonde Trouble." All who came had a great time.

Our next meeting was planned for October 8 at 7 p.m.; we also had planned to discuss our October and November socials.

Lodge 40 Youth Club Meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, The SPJST Lodge No. 40 Youth Club of El Campo - Hillje held its monthly meeting on October 1, 1987 at 7 p.m. in the Commercial State Bank Gold Room.

We had a short meeting conducted

by Youth Leader Mary Ann Karasek, due to all the absence of the president and vice president. We discussed the upcoming District V 1 Social.

Reporting showed that our Christmas Fund - Raiser is doing very well.

Birthdays for the month were Jody Henderson and Charlene Mondrick.

Door prizes were won by Martha Bartos, Bradley Rubesh and Kim Kacal.

In the spirit of Halloween, we came dressed in costumes and did craft.

Social for October will be a "Spook House" during Family Night; the date is set for October 16th. Also in October, there will be the District II Skating Party at Skate Haven in Temple, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 18, Elgin on behalf of our entire membership, extend our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother BLAINE WESTON SADECKY. Blaine Weston Sadecky was one year and 11 months old when he died on August 17, 1987.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on August 19 from the Grace Lutheran Church with the Reverend Bryan Sullivan officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Survivors include his parents, Lawrence and Kimberly Sadecky of Elgin; brother, Lance Sadecky of

Of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden No. 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the family of our departed sister MARY SIMCIK, of Waco, Texas who died August 26, 1987 at the age of 86.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, August 27th and Mass of Christian Burial took place Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Monsignor Edward Rabroker, Monsignor Mark Deering, Monsignor Frank Miller and Rev. Angelo Bertini officiating. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Sister Mary is survived by her husband, John Simcik of Waco; three sons, John, Ernest and Carroll Simcik, all of Waco; one sister, Hattie Matus of West; 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Sister Mary came to Texas as a child and attended schools in the West area.

She was a faithful member of St. Mary's Church and Guild, was a KJZT member, and an SPJST member since August, 1953.

May our departed sister rest in peace.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Nove Kvety No. 35 Elk, on behalf of our entire membership, express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother RUDOLPH P. ZALMAN, 76, of 2523 McKenzie Avenue, Waco, Texas, who died at a Temple hospital on Wednesday, September 2, 1987.

Rosary was recited at Wilkerson Hatch Funeral Chapel.

Funeral Mass was at St. Louis Catholic Church, Monsignor Mark Deering officiated. Burial, with full military honors, was at Waco Memorial Park.

Brother Zalman was born January 9, 1911, in Elk, Texas.

He was a veteran of World War II and a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He retired from the United States Navy July of 1954, after 23 years of service at the rank of Chief Machinist Mate. In addition to serving in the South Pacific, he also served during the Korean War. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4819 of West and American Legion Post No. 421 of Waco.

He formed Waco Branch 240 of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.

He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church.

Brother -Zalman, past president of

SPJST Lodge No. 35, also served as financial secretary for many yea â&#x2013;ş . He was very, instrumental in re - activating our lodge in the 50s.

Survivors ae his wife, Inez Zalman; three daughters, Frances Marie Zalman of Honolulu, Hawaii, Johnnie Maye Lyda of Dallas and Sarah Kathleen Kolinek of Bloomington, Indiana; a stepson, Charles W. Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth, Texas, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy on behalf of our mem bership, to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother BERNARD ALVIN [PAVLICEK] PAVEY who passed away Thursday morning, September 3, 1987, at his home.

Benny, as he was known to all, was born June 16, 1905 in Rowena, Texas.

At an early age he and his family moved to Bomarton, Texas in Baylor County. After graduating from Bomarton High School in 1925, he moved to Fort Worth, where he attended Brantley - Draughon Business College. After his graduation at Brantley - Draughon's, he joined the Wagner Supply Company, an oil field supply company. After 2 years, the company liquidated and he joined Hercules Supply Company; in 1941, they transferred him to Houston, Texas. After 17 years with Hercules, he joined Republic Supply Company in Houston. In 1953 the company moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where he was invoice manager until he retired after 25 years in 1970.

In 1971 he and his wife, Mary, moved back to Fort Worth where he was a very dedicated volunteer worker for SPJST Lodge 154 and Sokol Fort Worth.

He married the former Mary Chorich on November 23, 1935 in St. Louis, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Adolph and Emily (Zapalac) Pavlicek and his brother, Manislav (Pat) Pavlicek of Silverton, Texas.

Benny was a member of Lodge 154 since 1945 and a Charter member of Sokol Fort Worth. He was a Catholic.

Survivors include his wife, Mary C. Pavey of Fort Worth; brother, Jerome Pavlicek of Olney, Texas; sisters, Hattie Havran of Cortez, Colorado, Lydia Sykora of Megargel and Elsie Densmore, Justine Valek, and Evelyn Zalkovsky, all of Dallas plus many nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, at Mount Olivet Chapel.

Father R.J. Matus and Brother Darrell Williams for Lodge 154 and Sokol Fort Worth officiated. Interment was in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Pallbearers were his nephews, Bernard Havran, Jr., David Zalkovsky, Bill Sykora, Richard Staight, Harlis Wright and Charles Zalkovsky.

Arrangements were by Mount Olivet Funeral Home.

She was born August 31, 1948, in Dallas the daughter of Dr. Ervin J. and Faustie Cole Skrivanek. She was reared in Ennis and graduated from Ennis High School in 1966. In 1970, she graduated from Stephen F. Austin University with a degree in Elementary Education. She received her Masters degree in Early Childhood from East Texas State. In 1970 she started teaching at Sam Houston Elementary School in Ennis. July 2, 1971, she was married to Scott Morgan of Houston.

After their marriage they lived in Ennis. She was a member of the Texas State Teachers Association, the Ennis Garden Club and the New Horizons Ladies Group at the First United Methodist Church where she was a member.

Survivors include her husband Scott Morgan of Ennis; one son, Scott J. Morgan of Ennis; one daughter, Amanda Morgan of Ennis; her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Ervin J. Skrivanek; one brother, Don Skrivanek of Austin; one sister, Mrs. Cecil Strnad of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Paula Morgan, 39, were held at 10 a.m.

Tuesday in the Keever Chapel with Rev. Allen Goss of the First United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment was in Myrtle Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary with Don Roberts, Don Tubbs, Mike Reel, Frank Hoffman and David Gerhauser, all of Ennis and Ken Bean of Richardson, serving as pallbearers.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Seaton Star No. 47, on behalf of our entire membership, express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister FRANCES T. HEJL, who passed away in a Temple hospital Tuesday, September 8, 1987 at the age of 73.

Mrs. Hejl was born in Bell County (Seaton community) to parents Joe and Elizabeth Mikeska. She attended Seaton School and married Emil Hejl in 1934. They farmed in the Seaton community all their married lives.

Mrs. Hejl loved to cook and was always willing to share her recipes with her friends. She always had a smile for everyone despite her failing health.

Sister Hejl was a member of the Evangelical Brethren Church and she and her husband were cleanup chairmen at Lodge 47 for 41/2 years.

Funeral services for,Sister Hejl were

held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, September 9 in the Harper - Talasek Funeral Home with Rev. John Bravenec officiating. Burial was in the Seaton Cemetery.

Survivors are her husband, Emil J. Hejl of Temple; one son, Alvin J. Hejl of Elkhart, Indiana; two daughters, Betty Lou Marek of Temple and Patsy Jo McGlothlin of Dallas; one brother, Raymond Mikeska of Temple; four sisters, Annie Chupik, Della Coufal and Betty Bowles, all of Temple and Tracy Carper of Dallas; three half brothers, Albert Mikeska and Reuben Mikeska of Temple and Leo Mikeska of Damon; one half - sister, Judy Meyer of Temple; her stepmother, Olga Mikeska of Temple and 7 grandchildren.

Brother Vajdak was born in Snook and had lived in Bryan since 1945. He was a retired cook with the Department of Food Service at Texas A&M University.

Brother Drozd served in the U.S. Air Force in Okinawa during the Korean War for 3 years. He was employed with A&P Food Stores for 21 years and, for the last 13 years, with the Temple Postal Service. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was a volunteer at the Olin E. Teague Veterans Center Chapel. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 3444, Academy SPJST Lodge No. 177, Veterans of Foreign Wars Bell Post No. 1820, and the National Letter Carriers Association.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Vasicek Drozd of Temple; three sons, Bernard Drozd of Victoria, Ivan Drozd of Holland and Nathan Drozd of Temple; three daughters, Catherine Kelm of Temple, Diana Caldwell of Temple and Mabel Carpenter of Austin; two brothers, Albert Drozd of Houston and Steve Drozd of Granger; four sisters, Martha Glaser of Buckholts, Lillie Kaderka of Granger, Annie Jackson of Kathy, and Helen Hundel of Corpus Christi; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held September 29 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Monsignor Arthur Michalka and the Rev. Harry Bilski officiating. Burial was at Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple, with Harper - Talasek Funeral Home in charge.

Memorials may be made to the Cancer Research Department at Scott & White Memorial Hospital.

Victoria Czech Heritage Festival The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society will hold their third annual Czech Heritage Festival Sunday, October 18, 1987, at the Victoria Community Center Annex, 2905 E. North Street. Joe Janak, Society chairman, stated the festival will again

feature the same wholesome food and entertainment for the same general admission, $2 per person, except more has been added this year! .

Due to the tremendous response from the public last year nearly all events are being extended or added to.

For instance, this year's festival starts with a meal, a full - course Czech meal.

Doors open at 11 a.m. for the public.

Sausage, buttered potatoes, sauerkraut, peaches, truly homemade bread, and/or homemade 'chicken noodle soup will be available. This can then be followed with any of your favorite kolache. The genuine Czech food seems to draw the people because a lot of it is truly homemade.

Speaking of homemade, there are hundreds of excellent Czech cooks out in the surrounding counties and, for their second year, the society will host a Czech Baking Contest open to the public with no entry fee. Twelve categories are featured including poppyseed, prune, apricot, cheese, peach and sausa g e kolache, poppyseed cakes, prune cakes, white bread, rye bread, poppyseed buchta (rolls), and Vanocka (Christmas Bread). Ribbons, rossettes and a trophy will be awarded.

To enter call 575 - 4304 by October 7th. Registration for entries is 9:30 10:30 a.m. on October 18, 1987.

The third Texas State Tarok Tournament will also be held one hour earlier than last year, at 12 noon. Since the first State Tournament, the attendance has nearly doubled with 42 contestants coming last year frOm as tar as 200 - 300 miles. "Tarok" an old out interesting card game which dates back to the 15th century, has been played by Czechs and other nationalities for hundreds of years.

The society initiated this tournament three years ago to preserve and develop this type of culture. A $10 tournament re g istration tee is charged as last year, but tour cash prizes and trophies will be awarded this year including first through fourth place; $100, $75, $50 and S25. Contact 578 - 2507 after 6 p.m. by October 7th to pre - register.

From 12 noon until 3:30 p.m. everyone will be entertained and can also join in as a Czech sing - along will be featured. Also, the Victoria Czech Singers will be performing and an accordianist's jam session will be held. ['here will be no charge for the accordian session, but all musicians amateur or better, are encouraged to call 573 - 2330, so we can make arrangements. for those wanting to learn to bake kolache, a Czech cooking demonstration will be held in the afternoon. And for those interested in Czech artifacts and antiques, a collection of 300 pieces will be on display for the first time in Victoria.

To end off the day, what better way than to dance to the music of the Rudy Kurtz, Jr. Orchestra of Port Lavaca.

Concho Valley Czech Heritage Society The Concho Valley Czech Heritage Society composed of Runnels, Tom Green and Concho Counties, will have their quarterly meeting Sunday, October 18, 1987 at 2 p.m. in the Wall Fire Hall at Wall, Texas.

There will also be an election of

officers for the coming year. All members and any interested persons are asked to please attend this important meeting.

"Happy Birthdays" for the month of September are residents Betty Wruck, Rosa Bremner and Frank Carnes, also staff -- Florence Kramer, Dottie Johnson, Molissie Bains, Delores Watson, Lanora Broaden and Paul Legendre.

The Birthday Party which was held Friday, September 25 included Louis Vacek entertaining with the accordian and piano and singing "Happy Birthday." The Unique Shop provided corsages and boutonnieres. The Immanuel United Church of Christ SIS provided cakes; also Sophie McDougle brought a cake. Volunteers were Edith Schulz and Lydia Hortmon who served the cake, ice cream, punch and coffee to all. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

Thanks to all denominations of churches in the area who give services and communion and to the volunteers who do services in the home to residents in September.

The residents greatly appreciate the singing.

Every Thursday afternoon, Elton Tielke and Albin Tielke, Jr. come to have sing - a - long. Everyone enjoys the old - time songs.

The KCs came to play Bingo Tuesday afternoon, September 8th and 22nd with the residents. The residents enjoyed Bingo and visiting with the ones present.

Saturday, September 12, the Brazos River Cloggers came to entertain.

Everyone enjoyed the clogging.

Monday afternoon, September 13th arid 28th, Betty Seiler came from the library to show movies. The residents enjoyed movies and popcorn.

Thursday, September 17, in the afternoon, Garland Hurtye and Mary Goffinet with the Fort Bend Humane Society brou g ht dogs for therapy for the residents.

Monday, September 21, the Hope Lutheran Church Women of Beasley came to have a sing - a - long and brought cookies and had a social afterwards. They also brought prizes for Bingo. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon.

Thursday morning, September 24, residents Annabelle Schoppe, Gladys Hix, James Little, Helen Valcik, Rosa Brenner and Martha Marx (SAD) went riding to Rosenberg and surrounding area. Everyone enjoyed the trip. In the evening, Larry Ognoski, Fred Gerke and George Lolley provided music and singing for the residents. Everyone had a great time. Oddíl Dopisovatelů Tak Všelicos Anežka Houdková Tak zase se přihodila ta hrozná věc v té Kalifornií když přišlo to zemětřesení a nadělalo tolik škody a už řekli, že asi 6 je, jich zabitých a 100 poraněných.

Možná, že ještě na konec toho bude více. Toto přišlo jaksi z nenadání a dosti silné a je to vždy velice zlé když něco takového se stane myslím, že to zemětřesení které přišlo v 1906 bylo tehdy nejhorší ale toto zas bylo horší než to předešlé které bylo před krátkým časem; už toho bylo v te Kalifornii kolikráte a člověk neví co se přihodí. Jeden člověk byl zabit když stěna budovy na parkovišti se zhroutila a spadla na něj. Bylo to brzy ráno minulého týdne a teď teprve se vyšetřu­ je co vše se kde stalo a jistě toho bude dosti. Prý se to stalo poblíže města Los Angeles a okoli.

Nedávno udělali zákon, skrze ty psí "Pit Bull" ráce a teď mnozí co mělí takové zvířata tak je dali odpravit aby někoho nekousli a oni neměli pak nesnáze s žalobou za poranění. Už moc jich kousli lidi a ti pak žalovali majitelé těch psů. Oni jsou tak učení aby opatrovali lidi a jejich majetky a tak oni se vrhnou na ledakoho kdo se jim zdá, že by mohl těmto uškodit. V tom průplavu persíanským se pořád něco děje. Minulý týden čtyři lodě prý vymetaly moře aby odtud vyčistily ty vybušniny které ti Iránové tam dali neboť oni nechtí aby cizí lodě projížděly tam. Také stříleli v těch Iránech a zas stříleli po lodích Japonských a též i těch v Afghanistanu. Bylo řečeno že ještě jiné národy se připojí k těm kteří chránějí aby se střelba už nekonala lodím at jsou kterékoliv. Je to pořád napjaté.

Ten Španělský Král a Královna byli v San Antonio a měli se dobře neboť je pěkně uvítali tam a pak v neděli minulého týdne byli v Houstonu a navštívili známou nemocnici M.D. Anderson která slouží lidem kteří trpí rakovinou a malé děti tam je pobavili.

Už brzy pojedou zase zpět domů ale vše se pěkně vydařilo. Ty nemocné děti tam jim darovaly vánoční lístky kterě oni zhotovili a tak mají památku na Texas. Také že prý odevzdali tam sochu toho Cabeza de Vaca který s třemi druhými muži byli na lodi jenž ztroskotala poblíže Galvestonu v listopadu 1528. Ten Cabeza de Vaca byl první ktery zkoumal poprvně v našem Texasu. Pak se odebrali do Mexika. A královská dvojice nyní odhalila a odevzdala sochu tam v Her­ man Parku. Tedy vše se pěkně vydařilo a dnes v neděli 4. října odjíždějí zas zpět domů. Královna španělská je dcerou krále Pavla a Královny Frederiky z Řecka.

Dnes nám oznamovali, že škoda způsobená tím zemětřesením v Kalifor­ nií prý je asi 64 milionů dolarů. Asi 500 lidí je bez domova a moc budov bylo úplně rozbito a škol asi 200 musí býti nějaký čas zavřené. Také ta stará misie San Gabriel byla poškozená a musí být opravená. Je to vše velmi zlé že se to musí stát, že ano?

Před týdnem byla footballová hra

zde když dvě černošské školy soutěžily a pak po té hře 6 studentů se dalo do hádky a pak se pobodali a teď se vyšetřuje kdo to začal a byl vinen s tím bodáním a budou potrestaní dobře neboť nechtí aby ještě někdy se něco takového stalo, vždyť mohlo se stát že to mohlo dopadnout že někdo mohl být zabit. Proč se ti hoši prali a tak špatně se zachovali jeden k druhému?

To bylo ošklivé jednání. . Nyní bylo řečeno, že dosud je asi 60 žalob proti letadlové firmě skrze tu srážku letadla před několika lety zde kdy bylo zabito 137 lidí a ty škody jdou do milionů dolarů. To vše bude stát tu firmu strašně moc pěnez ovšem ty peníze nenahradí pozůstalým životy těch zemřelých, že?

Jeden muž a jeho syn kterým byla zabitá manželka a matka tak obdrželi prý 900 tisíc dolarů za to a jiní už obdrželi též velké peníze za to že jejich příbuzní ztratili životy v tom neštěstí.

Tento týden jsme měli opravdu pěkné podzimní počasí kdy bylo chlad­ navo a přes den bylo pěkně teploučko.

Snad prý budeme míti ještě trochu he­ zké počasí a to člověk se hned cítí lépe.

Obyčejně v říjnu jsou pěkné dni, že?

Ty ceny oleje jaksi pořád jsou všeli­ jaké, jeden den jsou větší o pár centů a pak zas spadnou též o pár centů a tak nevíme jak to vše dopadne. Minulý týden jistý člověk kdesi na severu zemřel když mu bylo už 106 let a také prý mohl řídit auto ještě když mu bylo už 104 léta. Ten opravdu mohl vyprávět sousedům a jiným lidem co vše prožil za ty léta a byl zdráv až pak najednou zesnul. Byl prý to dobrý člověk a tak je ho škoda že mohl leccos světu říci co vše se dělo za tu dobu jeho života.

V naší zemi už 141 bank udelalo úpadek a musely býti zavřené na čas než se spojili s jinou a pak otevřeli znovu.

Též přes 40 bank v Texasu bylo tak postiženo a je to opravdu špatné že to tak dopadlo. To je jistě špatné pro ty kteří řídili obchody těch bank. To dříve nebývalo aby tolik bank mělo takové neštěstí v jednom roce. Už je čas aby se to· zlepšilo.

V Chicagu jistý člověk který se jmenoval šourek prý chtěl dat svou kočku hadovi druhu "python" aby si ji snědl ale ten o ní nestál a lidé kteří 'to viděli tak řekli to policii a ti kočku vysvobodili a dali ji usmrtit té společnosti která usmrtí nemocné aneb nežádoucí zvířata klidně a je to. Ten Šourek vlastnil restauraci tak mohl dát hadovi něco od jídla nemyslíte?

Namísto dávat kočku do klece k tomu hadovi?

Zase jedna královská dvojice z Japonska přijela do naší země na návštěvu a sice, princ Akihito a jeho manželka princezna Michiko jsou od soboty minulého týdne v Massachusetts a navštíví zvláštní místa a pobydou zde asi 18 dní. Tak se zdá, že nyní více těch vůdců z cizích zemí přijíždějí k nám. Snad vše se vydaří dobře. a nepřihodí se nic špatného během jejich návštěvy zde; v tech Filipínech je to pořád jaksi nejisté neboť stále někdo něco dělá z cěho je strach, že se přihodí revoluce proti presidentce Aquinové že musí být její palác stále střežen aby nebyla třeba zabita. A v tom průplavu čili "gulfu"

Ve Washingtonu jistý člověk byl chycen když pašoval drogy a tak jeho drahé auto druhu "Ferrari" bude v dražbě prodáno a myslí se že to přinese aspoň dva miliony dolarů. Majitel byl zabit a vláda to vzala a bude to prodávat tomu kdo dá nejvíce.

Tak jsme se dověděli, že poblíže Ft. Worthu jistý 54 letý člověk se zabývá chytáním hadů. On prý z těch kuží hadů vyrábí různé věci jako pásky, též peněženky a vesty a na ty prý potřebuje prý 14 až 16 hadů. On musí kůže pěkně vysušit a pak leccos zhotovuje. Má na skladě prý asi 600 hadů (většina je jich v zamrzačí "freezer"). Někdy když mu schází hadí tak kupuje hady od jiných mužů pro svou potřebu. Tedy vidíme, že někdo se zabývá těmi opravdu divnými pracemi, že? Nikdy nebyl ušknut hadem za ty léta!

V neděli večer nám oznamovalí, že v Kalifornií zase měli trochu zemětřesení po tom před dvěma dny měli a škody též zase byly. To první zemětřesení tak třášlo budovami že teď už cihly začaly padat dolů a bude práce dost vše dát do pořádku a peněz to bude též stát dosti.

Mají. strach, že mosty jsou poškozené a potrubí též a moc lidí je bez elektriky=-je to opravdu velmi zlé.

A ještě se bojejí že přijde další otřes a udělá více škody. Dnes ráno v pondělí zas bylo to zemětřesení které nadělalo zas škody když věž ve které byl zvon v San Gabriel spadla a v auditoriu prý nadělala škody 500 tisíc dolarů. Od minulého· týdne ve čvrtek prý škoda už je 108 milionů a prý 800 domovů bylo zničeno a přes tisíc lidí museli býti přes noc ve veřejných přístřeších když neměli kam jit. Už kolik těch otřesů se stalo v Kalifornií a je to už moc.

Někteří neví zda mají znovu opravovat domovy anebo se odstěhovat jinám někam; je to velmi špatné pro mnoho lidí, že ano? Šest je jich mrtvých a dvě stě je prý poraněných skrze to neštěstí.

Slováky a velký národ západoslovanský nikdy se nevytvořil.

V pár letech byla situace změněna ''zásluhou" německého císaře Jindřicha II, kterému zmíněný veliký slovanský stát byl trnem v oku.

Pomocí Němců byl Boleslav Chrabrý z Čech vypuzen a knížetem se stal Přemyslovec Jaromír a pak v letech 1012 - 1024 Oldřich (choť Božena).

Polský kníže Boleslav Chrabrý si podržel až do své smrti Moravu, kterou pak v roce 1029 ovládl Břetislav a Slovenska se zmocnili Maďaři.

Břetislav I se pak stal knížetem v letech 1035 - 1055 (choť Jitka). V Polsku mezitím bojoval po smrti Boleslava Chrabrého o trůn jeho syn Měšek II s bratrem Bezprimem a byl nucen v roku 1031 uprchnout do Čech. Po zavraždění bratra se vrátil a vládl do roku 1034. Pak bojovali o polský trůn jeho syni, Boleslav a Kazimír. Této situace využil zmíněný již Břetislav I, který dobyl Slezsko a zmocnil se tehdejšího hlavního města. Polska Hnězdna, odkud přivezl ostatky sv.

Vojtěcha. Z toho vznikla válka s německým císařem Jindřichem III v roce 1039, v níž český kníže Břetislav I byl donucen se vzdát polských výbojů; za Slezsko mu Poláci slíbili poplatek.

Břetislav I však připojil k přemyslovskému státu západní Sloven­ sko (Pováží) a trvale Kladsko. Polsko ve zmíněný rok sjednotil Kazimír I zvaný Obnovitel, který vládl v letech 1039 až 1058. Potom vládl tam jeho syn Boleslav II Smělý a pak jeho bratr Vladislav Heřman. V letech 1102 až 1138 vládl v Polsku Boleslav III Křivoústý, syn Vladislava Heřmana a Jitky z rodu českých přemyslovců.

Tento panovník pobyl ve svém mládí na dvoře českého knížete Břetislava II (1092-1100), který mu dočasně svěřil Kladsko. Boleslav III Křivoústý byl přítelem pozdějšího českého knížete Soběslava I (1126-1140), kterému poskytl útulek během sporů Přemyslovců o trůn a postaral se o smíření rozvaděných českých knížat.

(Soběslav I porazil na hlavu německé vojsko císaře Lothara u Chlumce roku Pozoruhodná polská 1126.) Po smrti Boleslava III Křivoústého se rozpoutaly v Polsku výstavka a Houstonu boje o trůn, do kterých zasahovali jak Pokračování z minulého Věstníku němečtí císaři tak řád německých Sepsal John J. Karas z Houstonu rytířů, který se usadil kolem Baltu v K podobnostem mezi Přemyslovci a severním Polsku. Podobná situace Piastovci náleží též okolnost vzniku (spory a boje o český trůn a takřka obou rodů. Obě původní knížetství stálé zásahy Němců do českých vznikla sloučením okolních kmenů; v záležitostí) byla též v českém státě po Čechách toto sloučení provedli smrti českého krále Vladislava II v roce Přemyslovci, v Polsku Piastovci.

1173. - Oba státy šly pak svou vlastní Podívejme se nyní na styky panovníků cestou až do roku 1241, kdy do Polska českého a polského státu. Kněžna vpadli Tataři. Tito nájezdníci, ve staré Doubrava, dcera českého Boleslava I a vlasti nazvaní Tataři, o kterých světové manželka polského Měška I urychlila dějiny hovoří jako o Mongolech, pokřesťanštění Polska. Syn Měška a zbudovali nedlouho předtím, za vedení Doubravy, polský kníže Boleslav chána Džingise, obrovské imperium.

Chrabrý, se dostal se souhlasem Střed této říše byl v úbočí Altajských vlivných českých rodů po Boleslavovi hor a na východě toto imperium III na český trůn. Tím byly spojeny zasahovalo hluboko do jižní Číny. všechny slovanské kmeny mezi Baltem Tatarskému postupu na západ padl za a Dunajem a mezi Šumavou a Bugem. obět nejdříve nejvýchodnější slovanský Toto spojení bylo zcela přirozené, stát, Kievská oblast, a tyto hordy na jelikož mezi Čechy a Poláky nebylo nízkých, sibiřských konících nyní většího rozdílu než mezi Bavory a Sasy. porazily Poláky ve Slezsku v Lehnice, Odstředivé síly však nabyly převahu; kde padl tehdejší vládce Polska, co se povedlo mezi Bavory, Sasy a Jindřich II Pobožný. V tomto roce Šváby, z nichž vznikl německý národ, 1241 vládl ve staré vlasti král Václav I, nepovedlo se mezi Čechy, Poláky a který odrazil u hranic Čech útok

14. řijna 1987-VĚSTNÍK/13 vítězných Tatarů od Lehnice, kteří pak vpadli na Moravu. Tam byli tito mongolští barbaři poraženi u Olomouce Jaroslavem ze Šternberka a ztroskotaly též tu jejich útoky na Štramberk a Hostýn. (Tataři však zničili zeměpanský hrad a osadu Přerov - poznámka pisatele tohoto článku.) Zprávy o politických změnách v jejich domovině pak přiměly Tatary ku kvapnému ústupu. Po hrozném tatarském zpustošení Slezska volali polští vládci jak tam tak i jinde Němce k zakládání či obnovování měst a ke kolonizaci liduprázdného venkova. V tuto dobu, v roce 1255, táhl Polskem Přemysl Otakar II na začátku své vlády (1253-1278) na křížové výpravě do Pruska na přání papeže Inocence IV. Slovanští Prusové byli v tu dobu převážně ještě pohané; Přemysl Otakar II, později zvaný "železný a zlatý," založil v Prusku na pobřeží Baltu město Královec (Konigsberg), nyní se jmenující Kaliningrad a patřící Rusku.

Po nešťastném konci Přemysla Otakara II na Moravském poli v severním Rakousku při moravské hranici, a po neblahém "hospodaření" v Čechách, poručníkem nezletilého Přemyslova syna Václava, Otcu Braniborským, se konečně Přemyslův syn Václav jako král Václav II ujal vlády v roce 1288. Tento český panovník, snažíc se podobně jako jeho otec vytvořit ve Střední Evropě velký státní celek, si počínal mnohem opatrněji. Vzhledem k východnímu nebezpečí - Tataři v roce 1285 znovu vpadli do dnešního Maďarska a též i do Polska - uzavřel Václav II přátelskou smlouvu s litevským knížetem Lvem a zároveň začal diplomaticky získávat polská knížata v rozdrobeném Slezsku.

(Slezsko, jak Horní tak Dolní, patřilo ve své historii někdy českému, jindy polskému státu.) Václav II získal si v roce 1291 mírnou cestou i Krakovsko.

Proti sousedícímu však Sandoměřsku, které ovládal kníže Vladislav Lokietek, podporovaný polským králem Přemyslem Velkopolským, musil už Václav II použít vojska. Po zavraždění Přemysla Velkopolského vlastními lid­ mi (neboli po vymření přímé větve Piastovců) byl Václav II korunován polským králem v historickém korunovačním městě polských králů Hnězdně, (Chotí Eliška Rejčka, dcera Přemysla Velkopolského) v roce 1300. Ve snaze čelit nebezpečí z výcho­ du vytvořením již zmíněného velkého středoevropského státu, Václav II při­ jal po vymření Arpádovců v Maďarsku pro svého 12 letého syna Václava (jako Ladislava V) maďarskou korunu. V čele jeho přívrženců byl Matouš Čák Trenčanský. Papež Bonifác VIII byl však z nevysvětlených důvodů nepřítelem Václava II. Tento papež určil v Maďarsku králem Karla Rober­ ta z Anjou a v Polsku stranil Vladislavu Lokietkovi (z poboční větve Piastovské). Papež Bonifác VIII získal i císaře Albrechta (Němci se ovšem nikdy nedali dlouho pobízet k boji pro­ ti Slovanům) k válce s Václavem II. V roce 1304 byl Václav II okolnostmi donucen odvést syna z Uher, ojedinělé české posádky se udržely v některých tamějších hradech až do roku 1306. Ve zmíněném roce 1304 Václav II též důkladně odrazil útok Němců ke Kutné Hoře. Mezitím však souchotě podhlodávaly jeho zdraví a smrt následovala předčasně roku 1304. Jeho jediný syn, Václav. III, byl zavražděn v Olomouci za necelý rok na výpravě do Polska proti nově povstalému Vladislavu Lokietkovi. Václavu III bylo pouze 17 let; jím vymřel rod Přemyslovců, vládnoucí v historické době přes 400 let. Vladislav Lokietek, "Druhý obnovitel Polska" (1306-1333) "uhájil" jak říkají některé historické záznamy trůn proti

Václavovi III a Janu lucemburskému, jež bojoval po boku německých rytířů, kteří získali gdaňské Pomoří. "První obnovitel Polska" byl v tomto článku jíž zmíněný Kazimír I, který vladl od roku 1039 do roku 1058. Jakým způsobem vlastně "uhájil Lokietek trůn proti Václavovi třetímu? Tento poslední Přemyslovec se do Polska vůbec nedostal, jelikož byl na válečném tažení proti vzbouřivšímu se Lokietkovi zavražděn již na Moravě v Olomouci. Některé prameny uvádí, že vrah Václava III byl najat Lokietkem.

Po Vladislavovi Lokietkovi nastoupil na polský trůn Kazimír III veliký, poslední z vedlejší linie Piastovců.

Hlavní větev Piastovského rodu vymřela, jak již v tomto článku zmíněno, Přemyslem Velkopolským roku 1300. Kazimír III Veliký sjednal v roce 1335 mír s českým králem Janem Lucemburským a zřekl se Slezska. Ten­ to poslední Piastovec vládl v letech 1333-1370; jím vymřel rod Piastovců, který v Polsku vládl od roku 960 do roku 1370. V Polsku pak vládl velmi krátce rod Anjouovců (1370-1388); 1370 až 1382 to byl Ludvík Veliký, král uherský, syn sestry Kazimíra lil. V roce 1384 Hedvika, dcera Ludvíkova, si vzala za manžela Vladislava Jagello, litevského knížete. Ve staré vlasti vládli mezitím Lucemburci; Karel IV do roku 1378 a pak jeho syn Václav IV, který zemřel v roce 1419 na srdeční záchvat uslyšev o hrozných nepokojích v Praze.
