Your editor's motto: "If you see someone without a smile today give them one of yours!" Wouldn't this world be a wonderful place to live in if everyone wore a smile?! *** YOUR ATTENTION is called to two items in last week's (September 30) Vestnik (1) Page 3, column 4 at the bottom of page from SL/FS Jerry Mikulas titled, "To: All Members; Subject: SPJST Direct Billing" -- The second to last paragraph, first sentence read: tWe have not processed all lodges' -- it should have read: 'We have NOW processed all lodges that have requested direct billing and we are available to work with your lodge in performing this service if you so desire.' We are reprinting the correct letter on page 3 in this issue. (2) To our Youth (Juniors) -- Page 11, columns 3 and 4 at bottom of page "Halloween Contest For Juniors,"the puzzle section (shaped like a pumpkin) was inadvertently omitted -- we are reprinting that also including the entire puzzle. We hope our Juniors understand and they still have plenty of time. We regret both errors and good luck! *** The following activities are scheduled throughout the State of Texas in the near future, namely: October 11 -- Lodge No. 17, New Tabor members will act as hosts at their District I Fall Meeting; October 18 -The 47th Czech Day has been designated for citizens, especially of Czech - Moravian - Slovak descent in Dallas during the State Fair of Texas. (Refer to their program in this issue); October 25 -- There are three district fall meetings scheduled on this day plus annual Czech Day at Lodge No. 88 in Houston. We suggest you attempt to attend your respective district meeting and voice your opinion on the future of our Society. The meeting locations are listed below: District III meeting will be held in Fort Worth with Lodge No. 154 members hosting at the Eagle Mountain Athletic Center, 6500 Boat Club; District VI has their meeting at the SPJST Hall in Hillje, Locl:),_ No. 40, El Campo - Hillje members will serve as hosts; District VII will hold the Fall Meeting and Family Day at Lodge 107, Floresville (FM 1303 Road) in conjunction with Floresville lodge celebrating its 75th anniversary. What a nice way to celebrate; at any rate, the editor extends best wishes for a continued successful future.

October 28 -Remember Czechoslovak Independence Day (1918)! *** We have not been charging anything for announcing Family Reunions in the Vestnik and are glad to do the service for the present, however, why not get your Family Reunions into history -- take up a collection for the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) to establish a "Czech Chair Endowment" in a Texas university. He will give you credit for it! *** We have been informed that our SL President Howard Leshikar was recently appointed to a special committee of the NFC by NFC President Louis Engelke - Congratulations! *** Last week October 1 - 4 our Supreme Lodge Officers, Howard Leshikar, Bernard Gebala, Leonard Mikeska, Jerry Mikulas, and District III Director Cyrill (Sid) Pokladnik attended the 101st National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) Convention in Chicago, Illinois. From the Fraternal Monitor, we are printing the excerpts of the agenda for the convention for our members' information so you can see what is covered in the annual event of over 100 fraternal societies.

"Fraternalism for the Family and Our Nation" is the anniversary meeting theme.

Members of the NFCA Board of Directors will come in early for an all day meeting September 30th. The Congress' 101 member - societies have also been invited to set up displays, and those will be assembled Wednesday. The registration table will be open that afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Thursday.

Various section meetings will be held Thursday morning. Those include: Fraternal Field Managers, committee meetings, 9 to 12 noon; Medical Directors, workshop, 10 to 12; State Fraternal Congresses, 10 to 12; Constitution Committee, 11 to 12; and Resolutions Committee, 11 to 12.

The Credentials Committee will be in session all day, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The formal portion of the NFCA Annual Meeting will get underway at 2 p.m. with the Opening Plenary Session. There the assembled delegates will be greeted by various dignitaries and hear reports from numerous NFCA committees.

Thursday night will be Fraternal Night, with the Fraternal Section presenting a night out in Old Chicago.

The fraternalists will spend the evening in a "Speakeasy" complete with a seven - piece band. The ticket price will include dinner.

Friday, the fraternalists are invited to a continental breakfast put on by the Hilton Hotel Corporation.

Francine H. Liem, director of insurance sales for the Hilton, will act as hostess.

General Session I will begin at 9 a.m. Part 1 of the session will be on "Leadership: A Commitment To featuring Dennis E. Success," Mannering, president, Options Unlimited, Inc. The guest speaker for Part 2 will be James W. Reel, chairman and CEO, International Computer Marketing Corporation. His topic had not yet been announced at press time.

The traditional section luncheon meetings will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. The section programs will be as follows: Actuaries; Communications, "Communications in Art," featuring two mimes from the Crystal Balloon; Investment, "Economy," Dr. Robert Genetski, senior vice president, Harris Trust and Savings Bank; Presidents, "Directors and Officers Liability Insurance for Fraternals," Henry G. Borden, consulting attorney for Fraternal Consortium; State Fraternal Congresses, guest speaker Arley R. Bjella, past president of NFCA, chairman of the board of Lutheran Brotherhood.

Wednesday, October 7, 1987—VESTNIK/3 Following the section luncheons, General Sessions II will open at 2:15 p.m. Part I will feature a talk on "What We All Need to Know About Drug Abuse," by John E. Keller, author, lecturer, clinician. Part 2 will be on "The C's of Success" featuring Benjamin Franklin, also known as Robert L. Bray, of Bray, Franklin & Associates.

At 4:30 p.m. the Nominating and Resolution Committees will hold meetings.

Saturday, the fraternalists will attend General Session III which will open at 9 a.m. The theme of that session will be "Survival of the Fraternal System." Part 1 will feature a talk on "What Is a Fraternal Benefit Society?" by a member of the NFCA Law Committee. Part 2, a panel of fraternal speakers will discuss "Fraternalism and the Future." The panelists are NFCA Past President Virginia E. Farmer, national president, North American Benefit Association; John L. Dutton, vice president, public affairs, AAL; and a member of the NFCA Law Committee.

From 11:45 -a.m. to 2 p.m., the following sections will hold luncheon meetings: Field Managers, "People Make the Difference," Catherine Bauby, consultant to industry for management and sales; Fraternal, "Fraternalism for the Family and Our Nation," presented by the Polish Folk Dance Ensemble from the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America; Law, "Challenges to the Tax - Exempt Status of Fraternals: The Unrelated Business Income Tax and Other Attacks -- An Emergency Battle," Sheldon L. Fink, Sonnenscheim Carlin Nat & Rosenthal, attorneys at law; Medical, guest speaker; and Secretaries, "Crisis Communications and Lobbying," Judith M. Cronin, assistant vice president, Western Union Mail Services.

Thursday, the past presidents of the Congress will also hold their traditional luncheon.

The fraternalists will reassemble at 2:15 p.m. for the Closing Plenary Session. There they will hear Committee Reports, watch the presentation of the Fraternalist of the Year Award and hear Congressman Martin Russo (D - Ill.) give the keynote address. As the final order of business, they will elect officers and directors for the coming year.

Saturday night, the fraternal delegates and their guests will attend a reception from 6:30 to 7:30, then go to the annual banquet. Following dinner, the new officers and directors will be installed. Then the Frank Winkler Orchestra will furnish music for dancing. ***

Dear Members: This is to inform you of the approaching XXV SPJST Convention to be held in Temple, Texas on June 19 - 23, 1988.

The Bylaws direct me to notify each lodge as to the number of qualified votes so they may elect the proper number of delegates to the convention.

I will be forwarding this information to each local lodge secretary during the first week of October. Leonard Mikeska (Secretary - Treasurer) will also forward the required forms in reporting the qualified delegates to the Home Office.

My computations show that the lodges will be entitled to a total representation of 356 delegates.

Please refer to Articles 4 through 6 of our 1984 Bylaws pertaining to qualifications and procedure in electing delegates and substitutes.

(A Correction) TO: ALL MEMBERS SUBJECT: SPJST DIRECT BILLING Dear Members: This letter is to update you on the progress of direct billing throughout the SPJST. To convert to direct billing was a gigantic task and I want to thank all lodges who have already converted for their cooperation in making this project a huge success.

All lodges who have converted have indicated that they are extremely pleased with the results. The Home Office has certainly been able to render more prompt service to our members on direct bill by having current data on these certificates in our Home Office computer.

We have now processed all lodges who have requested "Direct Billing" and we are available to work with your lodge in performing this service if you so desire.

District I Fall Meeting/Family Day Sunday, October 11, 1987 at 1:30 p.m. New Tabor Lodge No. 17 will host the District I Fall Meeting and Family Day. The day's events will begin with a program, followed by games for the youth and adults. Refreshments will be provided by the host lodge. Bring the family and enjoy District I Family Day. Of District III Spring Meeting-May 3 Host Lodge No. 35, Elk utes

The spring meeting of District III began promptly at 11 a.m., which was convened by District III President Daniel Roznovsky.

Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST Motto were led by Melissa Burney and Darrell Uptmore.

Welcome remarks were made by President Henry Breitkreutz of Lodge No. 35, Elk. An Auditing Committee consisting of Sister Barbara Pavelka, Sister Jeanie Mason and Sister Mary Pavey was then appointed and accepted.

A motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes as read in the Vestnik.

A tribute to departed District 111 members was held by 1st Vice President Richard Burney.

Correspondence: None at this time.

SUPREME LODGE REPORTS SL Vice President Bernard M. Gebala gave best regards from all home officers in Temple. Brother Gebala reported on sales of insurance.

Brother Emil Petr was awarded a solid gold pin for One Million Dollar sales of SPJST insurance for 1987, also a solid gold pin for Million Dollar sales went to Brother David Andreason and Brother Albert Kubala.

District III Director Cyrill (Sid) Pokladnik gave a report on insurance sales. Brother Sid said that the insurance sales have increased and everyone is doing a good job and keep up the insurance sales.

He also gave a report on the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I in Taylor.

He said it is up - to - date in good standards. On May 17, 1987, the rest home in Taylor had their 30th anniversary. He also reported on the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville, which is in good standard.

A break for lunch was taken.

The meeting resumed from lunch break at 1 p.m.

Youth Club of Lodge No. 35, Elk presented a nice program under the direction of Sister Louise Burney, youth leader.

District III Bylaws Committee member, Brother Jerry Milan (absent) -- No Report.

District Youth Counselor Bessie Petr made her report, also reminded all the youth about the summer camp at Camp Val Verde. She then thanked the youth for their efforts.

Editor of Vestnik, Brother Rudy Sefcik made his report and stated that everything is going well. He also suggested to have color contrast in background and clothing when taking a picture to put in the Vestnik.

Roll call of all lodges by Brother Johnnie Gaidusek, Sr. revealed that 10 lodges were present; total attended -76. Lodge No. 35, Elk had the most attendance.

Unfinished or deferred business -NEW BUSINESS Brother Johnnie Gaidusek, Sr. reported for the Auditing Committee stating that all 3 sets of books were in excellent condition.

There was a motion made and seconded to give $100 in memory of Brother Otto Hanus to the SPJST Memorial Fund.

District III Sid Pokladnik presented a 50 - year pin to Brother Ed Holub of Lodge No. 35, Elk. Brother Henry Breitkreutz of the Nominating Committee then reported the results of their Nominating Committee.

The meeting was turned over to President Daniel Roznovsky for the next meeting in the fall. Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth volunteered to be the host lodge. It was accepted by acclamation.

Door prizes were handed out totaling $100. Everyone enjoyed the meeting.

District VI Social Agenda Dear Fellow District VI Members: This year's fall district meeting, to be held October 25th at the SPJST Hall in Hillje, will be a change from the routine. At our last district meeting, it was decided to have a social instead of the usual business meeting.

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, August 9, 1987 at the Grant Building. President Annie Vahalik presided over the meeting. Members were led in the pledge to the U.S. flag , by Janelle Chudej.

A Resolution of Sympathy was read

by Gaynell Chudej for our departed member, Joe Rehak.

Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the June and July meetings.

Correspondence followed. The usual reports by officers were also given.

It was decided not to meet in September because of the Vsetin social on the same day of our regular meeting date.

Final plans were made for Family Day. The meeting adjourned.

Refreshments and lunch were served.

Members present with birthday in July, August or September were Hilmer and Gaye Galetka, Mary Matula, Patsy Zabransky, Annie Vahalik and Erwin Holy. The birthday cake was won by Gaye Galetka. Door prize winner was Viola Holly.

Our annual Family Day was held Sunday, August 23 at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville with a good attendance. A delicious fried chicken dinner with trimmings was served at noon. President Annie Vahalik gave the meal blessing and welcomed everyone.

A short program followed the meal.

Pledge to the flag was said followed by a moment of silence for our departed members.

President Vahalik recognized our guests, District VI Director Matt Vanek and wife, Henrietta, also State Field Representative Jerome Hlavaty and wife, Henrietta. Our lodge was happy to have them with us. Director Vanek and SFR Hlavaty spoke to the

members about SPJST and life insurance.• Two SPJST videos-, were shown to the members and enjoyed very much.

Door prize winners were Helen Zak, Vicky Orsak, Vivian Belicek, Philip Vahalik, Hilmer Galetka, Jeff Holly, Wilma Wagner, Albert Kahanek, Jr., Sidonia Kovar, Selma Grones, Julia Roeder, Johnnie Zak, Victor Galetka, Betty Kahanek, Jo Ann Matula and Doyle Holly. In addition to the lodge door prizes, many thanks to Matt Vanek, Jerome Hlavaty and Betty Kahanek for donating door prizes.

The Youth Club project winners were Jason Kalmas, Bonnie Manno, Selma Grones, Philip Vahalik and Julius Galetka.

Everyone was thanked who helped make the day a success including the lodge officers, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Muenster for donating the beer, those who brought food and, especially everyone who attended the event.

The rest of the afternoon was spent in conversation and playing games.

Refreshments were served. The day was a success and enjoyed by all.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, October 11 at the Grant Building, beginning at 2 p.m. as usual.

9, Snook Meets

Lodge No. 9, Snook met for their monthly meeting September 2nd. Vice President James Schoeneman called the meeting to order.

Officers who were absent were E.R. Jakubik and Richard Vajdak.

Secretary Lyndon Jakubik read a note from SL President Howard Leshikar commending our lodge for sponsoring a Little League Baseball Team in Burleson County.

The lodge would like to thank Donnie Victorick for working with the team.

We will donate $200 to help sponsor the Lodge 88 Czech Concert Orchestra to the Burleson County Kolache Festival.

Our next meeting will be October 7th.

Before I forget my husband and I visited Charlie and Amy Haisler at Copeland, Texas. He has had a stroke and Amy is a diabetic. They have been members for a long time; in fact Charlie got his 50 - year pin a good while back. We hope they are both improved, and it was a very enjoyable visit.

SPJST Lodge No. 29 held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, September 13, 1987 at 4 p.m. with President Melvin Steger presiding at the meeting.

Tommy Rieger, Nikki and representing the Youth Club, presented the flag and led our members to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing a few moments of silence for our deceased members Annie Mokry, Henry Schwenker, and H.E. (Bud) Jacek.

We then had roll call of officers, it showed all were present. Minutes of our previous meeting were read and approved. Treasurer's report and the Property Committee report were given. Sister Edith Shiller then gave the Quarterly Report.

New members accepted into our lodge are Randy Ben Faltesek, Michael Messar, Kevin Massar, and La Vonna Massar.

Youth Club Leader Donna Vanecek announced that they had 19 members present at their meeting and 2 visitors.

There were 14 youth members present Saturday to learn how to bake kolache. Donna Pasemann volunteered to show how to prepare the kolache. They gave one dozen kolache for the door prize and they were won by Ila Mae Jansky (yours truly).

We had a couple of visitors at our meeting, namely, District II Director Willie E. Kohutek and his wife, Adeline Kohutek; do come back to see us again.

Lodge 33 , Bleiblerville Annual Fish Fry The annual Fall Fish Fry will be held Sunday, October 18, 1987 at the Bleiblerville SPJST Hall located on FM Road 2502.

There will be fried fish sold to go at 9 a.m. for the noon meal, serving will

begin at 11:30 a.m. The meal will consist of fish, bread, catsup, potato chips, and slaw; all you want to eat for the price of $5.50 for adults, $2.75 for children ages 6 through 12. Cakes, pies, and kolache will also be available.

We members of Lodge No. 33 wish to ask for a cake, pie or kolache to be donated, the variety of pastry will be sold with the meal or earlier. The donation of cakes, pies, and kolache will help to keep up the expenses in our lodge hall.

District VI Members: The members and officers of Lodge No. 40, El Campo - Hillje invite all of you to attend the District VI Social to be held at the Hillje Hall on Sunday, October 25, 1987. It would be wonderful to see someone from every lodge in the district present, especially, the officers, sales representatives and those on standing committees with the Supreme Lodge. You are the backbone of the lodges and your presence is important. An afternoon of fun and visiting is planned by the district officers and the hosting Lodge No. 40.

Dear Members: Those of you who read this but did not bother to attend the membership picnic on September 20th are going to be sorry after you read what we are about to reveal.

First, let me say that there were about 100 members and guests gathered here to enjoy the wonderful noon meal. The meal is usually the main subject of any and all events.

Much credit must be extended to the Food and Drinks Committee for arranging such a fine menu. Not only the menu, but the work that they themselves gave, and the excellent work of their appointed cooks and helpers. All members who worked, whether it be with the barbecuing or cooking, gave their best and, believe me, it turned out to be the BEST. Lodge President Ludwig Kocian

Wednesday, October 7, 1987—VESTNiK/5 certainly did not forget them when he expressed his thanks to all who have given help. Many compliments were buzzing around expressing the wonderful meal. About 100 members and guests were served. Brother L.G. (Tom) Kubena, one of our senior members, said the Grace.

One of our lifelong members, Edward Orsak, and his wife came from as far away as Baytown, and don't think that they did not enjoy the day's activity. The fraternalism, the brotherly feeling and the festive fellowship throughout the day was very visible.

Following the noon meal, a business meeting was called to order by President Ludwig Kocian. This is the time when the president thanked all who helped as well as all who came to enjoy the day with one another.

Also during this meeting, Secretary D.A. Juren, who delivered a brief report, brought out a special recognition of our senior members. A special recognition of our eldest member, Mrs. Marie K. Blair of Trinity, Texas, age 99 years. Mrs. Blair, a native of Ellinger, and a retired school teacher has outlived her Life Certificate. She is a sister of Mrs. L.W. Eckel of La Grange, Texas and sister of the well - known Ellinger native, the late Henry Kucera, for many years the City Attorney of Dallas.

Also recognized was Lodge No. 51 active member, a well - known and well - liked Brother Charles J. Divin of Ellinger, age 89 years.

We could go on and on, but it would take up entirely too much space so perhaps you can begin making your plans to attend the next lodge picnic on the third Sunday of September, 1989.

That is what the members decided at the last meeting.

66 Celebrates Anniversary

Our regular lodge meeting began with a delicious meal served by the Entertainment Committee.

The meeting began promptly at 2:30 p.m. with President Pauling asking for the flags to be presented. Larry Yates and Mike Warren presented the flags with Bill Warren leading everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Motto.

Everyone was asked to remain standing for a moment of silent prayer in memory of Mary Simcik.

Our Youth Club presented a program which everyone enjoyed.

All officers were present. We had Qne visitor, John Wright.

Correspondence included thank you notes from the Simcik and Narovec families; a letter from SL Vice President Bernie Gebala concerning the incentive program for all lodges; a letter from SL Secretary - Treasurer Leonard Mikeska concerning the obtainment of liquor and liability insurance; also a letter from SL President Howard Leshikar concerning the "Fraternalist of the Year."

President Pauling gave a recognition to several members who had done a great deal of work at the hall; they were Brothers James Locke, Ira Niswanger, George Shilling, Ray Orsag and Arthur Langlotz.

Minutes of the Board meeting held September 2nd were read by Sister Langlotz.

Entertainment Committee chairlady reported that hot dogs would be served at the next meeting. Members will be asked to bring a dessert. Sister Orsag then thanked George and Sue Pauling for the Mr. Coffee they donated.

Sympathy cards were sent to the Henry Narovec and Mary Simcik families; also to Brother Daniel Nors on the loss of his sister. A get well card was sent to Candace Pavlicek.

New members accepted were Lara N. Herring, Marianne Matus and Michael Matus. Additional insurance was issued to Tim Urbanek and Agnes Vesel k a.

A Resolution of Sympathy was read for our departed Sister Mary Simcik.

Under unfinished business, Brother Gaidusek reminded everyone of the District Ill fall meeting. He also noted that a chartered bus could be rented; cost would be $11 per person. At least 30 people would be needed. The bus can hold 43. Anyone wishing to go should contact Brother Gaidusek.

The fraternalist representing Lodge 66 will be Brother Frank Parma. He is truly a great fraternalist in every sense of the word.

Kevin Stuckly, SPJST scholarship recipient from our lodge, was asked to come forward. He then proceeded to thank everyone who was responsible for his receiving this honor. Brother Stuckly is a very deserving recipient of this scholarship.

Youth Club report, given by Youth Leader Gladys Yates, stated that 17 members and 2 visitors were present.

The youth will hold a Halloween Party on October 23rd at the hall.

Brother Frank Parma then thanked everyone for choosing him as the "Fraternalist" nominee from our lodge.

Sister Ceska made a motion to have a plaque with all fraternalist nominees' names to be put on it. It was agreed to do this. Trust Fund report, given by Libbie Parma, awarded Donna Stanislav with her graduation gift. She thanked everyone. Sister Parma then said thank you to Kevin Stuckly for his nice address and congratulated him.

Sister Langlotz thanked everyone for helping her with Bingo. She appreciated everyone's cooperation.

Door prize winner was Jimmy Stuckly. Winner of the Youth Club drawing for a lovely quilt was Harry Wadhams of San Antonio.

September birthday honorees were Ira Niswanger, Dillion Locke, Ruby Orsag, Annie Hanus, Mary Vrana, Michael Warren, Diana Engelke and Jessie Riggs.

Lodge No. 130, Dallas The Texas Czech Beseda Dancers of Lodge 130 recently participated in two special events. They performed in Houston at the 25th annual Sts. Cyril and Methodius Festival, July 10 th 12th. The participants included the Croatian, Czech, Polish, Slovenian, and Ukrainian communities. The event was held at the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2917 Hall and was sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and the Slavic Heritage Committee of Houston. The dancers also participated in the Mass on Sunday, where they carried the banner in procession.

The dancers also took part in the 16th annual Texas Folklife Festival in San Antonio, August 6th - 9th. This year we were very proud to have three generations of dancers with the fourth generation in the audience. The rest of our dance group included a sister and brother - in - law, nephew and niece, and two longtime family friends. You could say our group is a real "Family Affair." We look forward to and enjoy the friendly welcome and hospitality we receive from the people of San Antonio each year.

The next regular monthy meeting will be held Sunday, October llth. We invite all members to attend. There will be a covered dish supper after the meeting.

1) The first annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival will be held November 7th and 8th. It will take place at the SPJST Lodge No. 172, 3609 Preston, Pasadena, Texas. A $4 donation admits you to all exhibits, dances, and performances, 2) Lodge No. 107 is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its founding on October 25th. The celebration will be in conjunction with the District VII Fall Meeting and Family Day at the SPJST Hall on FM 1303 in Floresville.

Dear Members and Friends: Just a few lines to remind you of our Lodge No. 154 meeting Sunday, October 11 at 3 p.m.

The Youth Club had their meeting Sunday, September 20 and after the meeting, they went to Putt Putt and reported a good time.

Brother Andy and Sister Ann Sustala were honored Saturday, September 26 at our hall by their children to a cocktail hour, a delicious dinner and a dance, with music by the Czech Harvesters. It looked like everyone enjoyed the occasion. May they have many more years together.

We wish to extend our get well wishes to Brother Frank Kovar who had gall bladder surgery. He may be home soon. Brother J.C. Mason had a freak accident and did severe damage to his left knee. He underwent a 4 hour surgery. We wish both of them a speedy recovery.

I will be leaving for St. Louis tomorrow (September 30th) to visit my brother, Dugan Chorich, who is hospitalized, and the rest of my family. I hope to be back for our meeting and get more details in before the District III meeting.

Dear Members and Friends: Our September meeting was called to order by President Dona Hubenak with 39 ladies, 4 men, and 2 new members in attendance.

Get well cards were sent to Maria Frill and Ida Mayer, both had eye surgery and are doing well. A sympathy card was sent to Mary Pavey who lost her husband. We extend our sincere sympathy to Mary and all her family and may Benny rest in peace.

It was decided to sell tickets on the beautiful crocheted collar that Zdenka Skotak, from the Dallas Circle, had donated and the drawing will be in the October meeting.

Mary Powers won the door prize and Laura Posival will donate the prize for the October meeting.

Helen Paprskar told a funny story (which she is so good at it) in place of Bennie Bartek who was absent. In the October meeting Clara Marchioni and Ida Mayer will be telling their interesting stories.

Reports from vacationers were Lillie McMillen who had been in Lincoln, Nebraska for the annual Polka Festival. Frances Blake told about her trip to San Francisco and up the coast on a 17 - day tour. Florence Greer told about her trip to Colorado. Going on a trip are Helen Paprskar and Rose Jaworski to Hawaii. Dona Hubenak's daughter is vacationing in London, England.

Hostesses for October will be Florence Greer, Frances Blake, Betty Loyd, and Pauline Morbitzer.

Seaton Choral Club News Dear Brothers and Sisters: On September 23rd seven members met to sing the selections that we will present to the nursing homes in October. Mature Driver's Course Lodge No. 88, Houston AARP

Don't fail to take advantage of the mature driving classroom refresher course for drivers 50 years of age or older being conducted at SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston, October 15 - 16, 1987.

Class starting time is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day and is conducted by an American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) instructor.

Fee is $7 and is payable the morning of October 15th.

The settlement itself is known to exist from 1263. At the end of the 14th century, it became a town having the privilege to hold an open market and anniversary sales; this, in turn, was a cause of the progressive craftsmen work (such as shoemaking, weaving and cloth making, pottery, ceramics, etc.) in those days. The hills in the neighborhood of the town were covered with vineyards yielding rich harvests. At the beginning of the 19th century, the craftsmanship in the town declined and the settlement became almost entirely involved in agriculture.

Later, on the 10th of August 1847, one of the most outstanding events of Slovak awakening took place at Cachtice Parish house when the 2nd assembly of the Tatrin Committee met there. This educational and publishing body, which was founded in 1844, goal was to reassure and expand Slovak National endeavour by setting aside the differences in religion, in social standing and any other variations among the Slovak people. Tatrin accepted gtur's Slovak grammar as the overall correct base for the Slovak language, thus accomplishing the main base for Slovak National unification.

This chapter of recent Cachtice 's history, which in itself is one of the

most important events of the Slovak Nation is. thou gh. eclipsed by the horrible events at Cachtice's Castle in the Middle Ages.

This stronghold was a fortress guarding the borders of Hungary against Moravia, (Slovakia was, for almost a thousand years, part of Hungary after the destruction of the Great Moravian Empire). Its first written document from 1276 records its siege and its great damage by Czech King Pfemysl Otocar II. The castle was rebuilt several times, enlarged and had its fortifications increased during its history. Finally, the progressive war technique brought an end to the castle's glory as the army of Ferencz Rakoczy, Duke of Transylvania, needed only 3 days of artillery fire - not only to cause great damage to it - but to capture it. During the siege the castle was burned out, and it was then only partially rebuilt in 1715 and some of its buildings served as a prison for some time. Later when it burned out again it was abandoned.

The castle was originally Royal property. Later its owners were several different houses of nobility. It was branded with a horrible infamous stigma during the rule from 1569 to 1703 of Nadasdy House because of the bloodthirsty crimes of Elizabeth Nadasdy nee Bathory. She married at 15 and while her husband (the county governor) was preoccupied elsewhere most of the time, she ruled the castle and its surrounding district. She was more and more cruel to her subjects and, when she inherited all of this estate after her husband's death in 1604, her cruelty multiplied and finally came to light as the most horrible crime of the Middle Ages. She had young maidens recruited into her service and in the castle she, with the help of several similarly degenerated servants, tortured them and murdered them. Although these bestialities were cleverly kept secret for a long time, the unhappy parents of many of the disappeared maidens finally prevailed upon help of Cachtice's Parish priest Jan Ponicenus, who sent a complaint to Matthias II, Ruler of the Austro Hungarian Empire. At the end of 1610 Elizabeth Nadasdy, better known as Bathory, was caught and jailed after another of her horrible crimes by a special Royal investigator sent by the Emperor. Soon afterwards, her helpers were tried and executed and Elizabeth Bathory, while awaiting trial that was always postponed, died in jail.

The number of her victims was never correctly established. Her helpers at their trail stated it was between 30 to 50 young girls, while Elizabeth's own records contain information concerning 650 maidens.

This horrible event grew even more hideous, repugnant and terrible since its solving because of tales connected to the case.

It was said that the "desire to keep everlasting youth and beauty by taking baths in maiden's blood" was the reason for Elizabeth Bathory's perverted crimes. The tales did not even let her rest in eternal hell, they said she appears, from time to time, as a ghost, either as "White" or "Black" Cachtice's Lordship. It was said that in her black attire she lured the chance travelers to search for Cachtice's treasures. This story also adds that only someone who, as a baby, was rocked in the cradle made of cherrywood from a tree which would grow in deserted Cachtice's Castle, would be successful. Although the geologists and archaelogists did not find Cachtice's Gold Treasure, the fairtale became somehow more 0

Note: Elizabeth Nadasdy nee Bathory was a Hungarian, the same as all of the ruling class living in the castles and chateaus of Slovakia, oppressing the Slovak people for many centuries.

Post Scriptum: In a reference to the Tatrin meeting at Cachtice 140 years ago in August of 1847 few basic facts concerning the Slovak language should be included with today's article. First of all it is not true to say that Slovak was not written until the 19th century as some philologists assert. It is true that the modern Slovak, as it is known today, was then first stabilized, but there are traces of the Slovak language in the local Latin documents from the 11th to the 15th centuries, Latin being the official language in Hungary at that time. Slovakia called the Upper Hungary (Slovensko zvane Horni Uhry) was part of Hungary since the destruction of the Great Moravian Empire in 907 to the birth of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918. In the 14th century, Czech became the literary language of the Slovaks, many of whom studied at the University of Prague. Czech language and culture was highly esteemed at that time everywhere in the Central Europe; the Slovak people appreciated the fact that the Czech language was very close to their own (nearer than it is now) and much easier to learn and use than

Latin. Later the Hussites' and the Protestant reformers in the 16th century also furthered the use of Czech, as well as the churches and other self - governing institutions in Slovakia. qhere thus grew up a sort of Czechoslovak language, for into the Czech written by Slovaks at that time there inevitably crept in Slovak linguistic features. The national consciousness of the Slovaks was thus this way saved from the obliteration.

The earliest documents in this somewhat Czechoslovak language date from the 15th century. In the 17th and 18th centuries some Catholics, especially those centered round the university of Trnava in Western Slovakia, tried to introduce Slovak as opposed to Czech in their church books, as for example in the Catholic hymnal, Canthus Catholici of 1655, which had no r, é, etc. In the city of Trnava, a big Latin - Slovak dictionary was also produced in 1777 and grammars of Slovak. At this period the dialects of Western Slovakia were used as a basis for the language. A slavicist Anton r3ernolak (1762 - 1813) crowns this movement. Among other works, he published a big Slovak Grammar in 1790; after his death, in 1825, his Slovak - Czech - Latin - German Hungarian dictionary appeared. His phonetic orthography was later to guide the reforms of Star, and his linguistic teaching guided the Slovak poet Jan Holly (1785 - 1849). In the churches the Catholics followed Bern°Mk, while the Protestants preferred to use Czech.

Ludovit Star (1815 - 1856), a Protestant (Evangelical), often called the father of the Modern Slovak, and his main collaborators, Michael Miloslav Hodia and Josef Miloslav Hurban, finally broke this division by introducing the speech of Central Slovakia as the basis of literary Slovak. Star's chief aim was to save the Slovak nation from extinction under the Hungarian tyranny by uniting them and educating them through and with their native language. One school of thought defines Star's reasoning as follows: "Understanding the wide social basis of modern languages, he realized that it was no longer the time when a foreign language, however, akin, (Star talks here about the Czech language!) could be used as a medium of social intercourse. The spread of education and democracy among the masses must be made in their own language.

He thus laid sure foundations for their liberation." In 1846 Star's decisive disquisition on the Slovak language and its use "Nareeja Slovenska alebo potreba pisafija v tomto nareef," Slovak speech or the necessity of writing in this dialect, appeared in Bratislava; but such eminent Slovaks as Jan Kollar, 1793 - 1852, (see my eulogical article in the English language printed in the SPJST Vestnik in February, 1987), and Pavel Jos. Safarik, 1795 - 1861, outstanding Slavic philologist and scientist, still opposed him, preferring Czech and declaring the need of a unified language for all Czechs and Slovaks.

Ludovit Star and his followers though prevailed in the establishment of the Slovak literary language. The net result of this effort is the fact that we have two nations and two languages in Czechoslovakia.

YOUTH LEADER Pottery is the art of taking wet, lifeless clay, turning it on a wheel until the desired shape is reached and firing the final product into hardness in a kiln or oven. It can be molded into beautiful, living creations that can be painted either in floral or pastoral scenes or in geometric patterns. It may also be left plainly painted in a neutral color and, either way, it is very practical, useful and ornamental.

The early Czechs not only made pottery locally for kitchen use, but also as accessories for decoration throughout the house.

Pottery was produced practically in each territory by local folk artisans in all areas of present - day Czechoslovakia. It included not only the more elaborate types, uniquely shaped and richly painted, but also the simple and practical pieces which were more of a utility type used for daily household needs.

The famous white Majolica pottery, beautifully - ornamented with naturalistic, figure or floral design is typical for the eastern territories.

Lodge 39, Bryan Youth Club Dear Readers, The Lodge No. 39 Youth club held its monthly meeting at Central Park in College Station. This was also our fun Family Day. We played tennis and also we fished some. Our big let - down of the day was when we drove up and the volleyball courts were covered with water, so instead of playing volleyball, we went into a game of football and then some more tennis.

We played games and worked on Vestnik projects. Birthday celebrant in September was Charlie Hill.

On October 9th we are going to see the Shriner's Circus. We are going to have our meeting on October 17th. All members are asked to bring a cake.

On October 31st we are having a Halloween Party. Each member can invite one guest.

The club welcomed Cash Eastwood as a new member.

Dear Readers, The September 19, 1987 meeting of Lodge 160 Youth Club was called to order by President Robyn Jansa.

Jason Schwartz led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Christy Dierschke read the minutes of the last meeting and Bridget Schwartz read the treasurer's report.

There were 10 members, 3 adults and one guest present.

For a money - making project, we decided to clean the hall after the annual RVOS meeting.

Golden Anniversary Celebrants Theo and Olga Fuchs celebrated their 50th anniversary with a dinner - dance reception at the Buckholts SPJST Hall on Sunday, August 16, 1987, given in their honor by their children and grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Fuchs and Charles, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Fuchs and Randy of Houston, and Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Chlapek, Chris and Matthew of Temple. Theo Fuchs and Olga Zajicek were married in Buckholts, Texas on August 19, 1937, and are now retired and living in Temple. Olga Fuchs is a member of Lodge No. 47, Seaton.

Triliceks Celebrate Golden Anniversary Lodge 133 President Anthony Trilicek and his wife, Alma, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on August 2nd. The celebration took place at the beautiful church where they got married 50 years ago at the St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Frelsburg, Texas; it also happened to be on the same date, August 2, 1937.

The couple, once again, repeated their marriage vows. The celebrant at the Holy Mass was Monsignor Buckholt.

He had a wonderful sermon to all of us on love and happiness.

The couple was blessed with three daughters, Gladys Baker, Gloria Weatherman and Glennie Lecocke plus five grandsons and two granddaughters.

A reception was held at the Parish Hall with a barbecue dinner and all the trimmings was served to all the guests.

Following the meal, the honorees with all the guests were entertained with a dance. The hall was decorated with beautiful flower arrangements and a beautiful welcome sign above the stage "Happy 50th Anniversary Alma and Anthony Trilicek."

St. Peter and Paul Church is located 11 miles from Columbus, Texas; as we left Columbus traveling the 11 miles in the country, I couldn't help but notice the beautiful surroundings, the rolling hills, with beautiful oak trees, lots of green grazing and the beautiful cattle.

One thing that was so noticeable was that the whole area was so neat and well - kept. Even after we arrived at the church, the yards were well - kept and all the buildings were in perfect shape.

The church itself was something to see.

The old - fashioned altars were all freshly painted with white and gold trimmings. The people in that area and the parish are to be commended and I am sure that they are very proud of their community.

We wish Anthony and Alma the very best and hope that God will give them many more years together.

Abbott Man Welcomed Pope John Paul "Honored, thrilled, overwhelmed," were the only words Alden Blanar Smith of Abbott could use to express his feeling when he was informed that he had been chosen to serve on the Welcome Committee when his holiness Pope John Paul II visited San Antonio, September 13th.

As part of the papal visit, the Texas Catholic Conference of Ethnic Affairs selected six representatives each from the 28 Ethnic groups which settled Texas and included not only Czech, Polish and Germans but such diverse groups as the Wends, Alsatians and Slovenes.
