Wednesday, September 23rd SL President Howard Leshikar advised the Editor and forwarded a letter to our membership (page 3 in this issue) and a copy of the letter from the NFC to our member, Brother Bruce Alan Skrabanek (Lodge 9, Snook; District I) who won first place in the contest sponsored by the NFC entitled "Constitution Promotes Equal Protection of the Law," on this 200th anniversary of the signing of the constitution. Here we include an excerpt of the letter sent to him by the NFC. For our SPJST Society, President Leshikar and the Editor congratulate Bruce!

Box 3 Snook, Texas 77878 Dear Mr. Skrabanek: Congratulations! 1 am delighted to have the honor to inform you that the essay you submitted to the National Fraternal Congress of America, National Bicentennial Writing Contest entitled "Constitution Promotes Equal Protection of the Law" has been selected by our judges as the first place winning essay.

Mr. Skrabanek, your essay was selected from a field of 81 essays submitted by 21 Senior, 26 Junior, 25 Sophomore and 9 Freshman students who invested their interest, time and effort in this contest. Keith Yates, Member, NFCA Bicentennial Committee *** "Without this treaty, we were on a crash course for disaster. Life on Earth was at risk within a century." That is what Peter Usher, United Nations meteorologist, said after two dozen countries meeting in Montreal signed a treaty agreeing to reduce ozone depleting chemicals by 50 percent before the end of the century to preserve the shield that protects the Earth from the sun's rays.

"The air - quality index for ozone is 103, which is in the unhealthful range." Weather forecasters make such statements on television and radio

almost every day, and the index is printed in many newspapers, but if you know what it means, you are unusual.

Most people have no idea, and many suffer needlessly as a result. For 10 million asthma victims, polluted air can bring on painful, sometimes life threatening attacks. In an additional 10 percent of the population, years of exposure to polluted air can eventually trigger asthma and other respiratory problems. Even if you are healthy, dirty air can cause an assortment of health problems often blamed on other causes, such as stress or allergies. But with 73 cities still unable to achieve federal clean - air standards, the culprit often is the air.

There is no magic pill to make you immune to air pollution. The best you can do is to keep track of the air quality every day and adjust your outdoor activities accordingly. For this purpose, the local air - quality index is useful. The index statistically combines levels of five different pollutants detected at more than 4,500 air - monitoring stations scattered around 360 urban areas. The pollutants are carbon monoxide, from automobile engines and woodsmoke; ozone, a dangerous form of oxygen, and sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and dust particles, all of which are emitted by industrial smokestacks. The dust increases the damage by carrying harmful gases deep into the lungs. The index ranges from a low of 0 to a high of 500. Air quality from 0 to 49 is considered good; 50 to 99, moderate; .100 to 199, unhealthful; 200 to 299, very unhealthful, and 300 and above, hazardous. Readings for carbon monoxide can vary sharply from one block to the next. But measurements for ozone and sulfur dioxide remain constant within 10 miles of monitors.

When air quality is moderate or worse, outdoor activity can trigger tightness in the chest, wheezing, burning eyes and an irritated nose and throat -- even if you are in good health.

When the reading reaches "unhealthful" or higher, anyone with a heart or respiratory ailment should avoid physical exertion out - of doors. Even taking a walk, mowing the lawn, raking leaves and barbecuing can be unhealthful. If you jog, play tennis or work out in some other way, exercising in polluted air will actually make it harder, at least temporarily, to breathe. When air pollution reaches the unhealthful range, playgrounds should shut down, outdoor - sports events should be postponed and adults should skip their midday run. This can happen up to 10 times a year in major cities such as Houston, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Milwakee and Washington, D.C. During lengthy heat waves, about the only safe outdoor activity is walking to and from your car.

Construction workers, farmhands, police officers and millions of other Americans who earn their living out of - doors have little alternative, of course. But if you must be outside, you can take some steps to protect yourself: You can minimize occupational dust by sprinkling potentially dusty areas. A fiber mask, costing $2 to $5 at hardware stores, filters out dust particles including grass and weed pollens -- but not gases. If at all possible, you should remain indoors, preferably in an air conditioned environment. For answers to specific questions about air quality, contact your air - pollution - control agency listed in the telephone directory under local government.

Travelers may even wish to call long distance to learn about air quality at their destinations. ***

The prize of $1,000 plus an all - expense round trip to Chicago was awarded on the topic "How the Constitution Promotes Equal Protection Under the Law." On October 2nd, Bruce will read his winning essay at the General Assembly of the National Fraternal Congress meeting in Chicago where he will also receive the top award of $1,000.

CTMA Pays Tribute To Otto Hanus The Central Texas Museum Association met at the Supreme Lodge on July 25, 1987 for a workshop on "The Law Says What!" A discussion on contlict of interest, new tax laws, gifts of appreciated property, appraisals, and IRS forms as they pertain to museums. Carol Huston, staff attorney for the General Counsel's office at Baylor University, presented the topic and discussed the various aspects of the laws.

The association also met to pay tribute to Otto Hanus for his dedication to museum work which serves as an inspiration to all museum workers. SPJST President Howard Leshikar presented the welcome and then proceeded to pay tribute to Otto: Citing Otto's of't repeated phrase, "To leave this world a better place than I found it:" and his love and loyalty to the SPJST organization, the Czech people and his museum.

Calvin Smith, director of Strecker Museum at Baylor University, also lauded Otto's dedication to museum work, saying that Otto and Matilda Hanus were the only couple so honored by Texas Association of

museums at their annual meeting that they were presented by a resolution commending them for their loyalty and dedication to museum work.

Mr. Smith then presented a plaque from the CTMA to Otto's three daughters; Lucille Drury of Corpus Christi, Florine Clay of San Antonio, and Rosemary Spence of Waco; his son, Dan Hanus, was unable to attend.

The plaque was, in turn, given to the SPJST museum to be placed with Otto's picture in the entry to the museum where it may be seen by everyone.

II Meeting & Fun Day At Round Rock

[Sunday, September 20, 19871 Although the weather eliminated outside activities 231 members of the various lodges of District II came and enjoyed an afternoon of games, cake walks, carnival activities, table horseraces and watching the Dallas Cowboys beat the New York Giants.

Lodge 187 of Round Rock hosted the annual Fall Fun Day. The trustees and members of Lodge 187 served barbecue beef and sausage with all the trimmings while members of District II brought pantry items, cakes and various gifts to be used in the spinwheel games, cake walks and door prizes. There was plenty of "Colorado Kool - Aid" available; Taylor, Elgin, Holland and Round Rock members donated five kegs along with twenty cases of soft drinks for the abstainers.

A short meeting preceded the fun time which was opened by President D.I. Bohac. All officers of the district were present and accounted for.

District 11 Director Wille E. Kohutek was present and discussed many matters pertinent to the operation of the various lodges including the possible availability of packaged General Liability and Liquor Law liability coverages. Each lodge has been requested to forward to the Supreme Lodge information needed by insurance underwriters to determine what could possibly be offered to the individual lodges. Willie also advised that plans are being made for the 1988 Convention. Willie told us that $35,000 ($25,000 from the Supreme Lodge and $10,000 contributions) was awarded to 70 members for scholarships this year.

Dan Balusek from the Taylor S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home thanked the Taylor Lodge No. 29 for the color TV contribution to the home.

Frank Klinkovsky presented the youth of District II and led the group in a sing - a - long.

Of those in attendance, the top four lodges with the greatest attendance were: Seaton -- 50 members, Taylor -43 members, Round Rock -- 37 members, Elgin -- 23 members.

We were all delighted to have SL President Howard Lesikar and his wife as guests of the meeting.

Dear Fellow District VI Members: This year's fall district meeting, to be held October 25th at the SPJST Hall in Hillje, will be a change from the routine. At our last district meeting, it was decided to have a social instead of the usual business meeting.

The following is the planned agenda: 11:00 - Noon -- Registration Noon - 1:00 -- Meal 1:00 - 1:15 -- Welcome & Announcements 1:15 - 1:30 -- Preparation 1:30 - 2:30 -- Youth Program 2:30 - 3:00 -- Czech Singers 3:00 - 5:00 -- Dance & Games Door prizes will be given throughout the afternoon.

Since the meal will be catered, each lodge is asked to send the total number of persons planning to attend from their lodge. Please send this total to: Rita Vanek, W. Norris Street, El Campo, Texas 77437 before October 21, 1987. So that this would be truly a district affair, each family attending is asked to bring a dessert.

In addition, a "Wheel of Fortune Game" will be played and each family is asked to contribute two pantry items and one youth item.

This will be our first attempt to have a full social meeting. Encourage the members of your lodge to attend and participate in the activities on October 25th.

23, Moravia Holds Meeting

Dear Members: The quarterly meeting of Lodge No. 23, Moravia was held Tuesday, September 15th at the lodge hall with 12 members present.

President Albert Olsovsky called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed for the departed members.

The secretary read the minutes of our previous meeting and the treasurer's report was given.

After some discussion, it was decided that a garage sale will be held next spring so we can make some money to paint the lodge hall. We would like for all the members to participate so when you decide to throw something away which can still be used, remember us. If you have some articles that you would like to donate right away then contact Eddie Vrana; he is in charge of accepting the things for our garage sale or if you have any questions contact him, also.

We would like for everybody to make his donations early so we know what we have in order to go on with the sale.

The annual Family Meeting which includes a party was discussed. It will be held December 13th at 1:30 p.m. at Eddie and Frances Vrana's cabin.

We are hoping all the members will be present; it has always been nice to visit with our members, especially those who do not live near by, but are able to

make our annual Family Meeting which is always held in December.

28, East Bernard Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: This month's meeting on October 4th is very important for members of Lodge Karel Jonas who plan to attend the District VI meeting on October 25th. A letter from the District Secretary Sister Elaine Berkovsky with details of what will take place . and what is expected of those who plan to attend, was received by our Lodge Secretary Brother Albert Lupik.

Remember, you must be present at this month's lodge meeting if you plan to attend the District VI meeting on the 25th. This, along with the regular reports, is scheduled on the agenda.

The "Order of Business" will be "by the book" with the usual exceptions.

The meeting will be held in the small office at 106 Leveridge and will start at 2 p.m.

An after the meeting luncheon and gathering is scheduled to be held upstairs in the hall.

The regular monthly meeting, September 13th, started on time and lasted about half an hour. Those reports given were accepted. A general discussion on the District VI meeting was held; since there was no information available, this was left for the October meeting. The meeting adjourned and most went upstairs to the luncheon.

The door prize was won by Sister Elsie Brdecka.

A bit of ham, rye and white bread was furnished by the lodge to make sandwiches. This and the food donated

by Sisters Kortis, Sontag, Brdecka and Nezval along with Brothers A.J. "Tony" Kelner, August Kubena and Albert Lupik made the luncheon a "full meal deal." All who were present enjoyed themselves.

A special thanks to those three members who stayed to help with the cleanup. It may seem as though this writer is repeating himself but he feels as though he must when help is given with the cleanup. This help makes time shorter for those of us who have to stay. Until someone has to do such work alone or with only one helper does one realize what work it is.

33, Bleiblerville Annual Fish Fry

The annual Fall Fish Fry will be held Sunday, October 18, 1987 at the Bleiblerville SPJST Hall located on FM Road 2502.

There will be fried fish sold to go at 9 a.m. for the noon meal, serving will begin at 11:30 a.m. The meal will consist of fish, bread, catsup, potato chips, and slaw; all you want td eat for the price of $5.50 for adults, $2.75 for children ages 6 through 12. Cakes, pies, and kolache will also be available.

We members of Lodge No. 33 wish to ask for a cake, pie or kolache to be donated, the variety of pastry will be sold with the meal or earlier. The donation of cakes, pies, and kolache will help to keep up the expenses in our lodge hall.

Lodge 40 Meeting The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 40, El Campo - Hillje was held on Monday, September 21, 1987, following the bingo games.

President Rita Vanek called the meeting to order. Youth Member Kim Kacal led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. A minute of silence was observed for all departed members, especially for William Rod who passed away since our last meeting.

Secretary Leona Macha called the roll of officers; all were present except Albert Kresta, Sr., trustee, who is ill.

Minutes of the meeting held August 17, 1987, were read and approved.

Treasurer Madeline Shimek presented balances of all accounts. A complete copy of report is on file.

First Vice President Bennie Reck reported all fill dirt hauled around the hall is now complete.

Second Vice President Dora Lee Kopecky had no report.

Youth Leader Mary Ann Karasek reported all Youth Club activities.

Koby Gerberman was accepted as a new member in our lodge. Welcome, Koby!

Leona Macha, chairman of "Fraternalist of the Year Award," reported nominees and any nominations from the floor will be voted on at our October meeting.

Attend the meeting October 19th and vote for Janet Marek, Laverne Bacak, Landis Kopecky or Bennie Reck.

There was discussion regarding the District VI Social to be held at our lodge hall on Sunday, October 25, 1987 beginning at 11 a.m. -- complete program listed in Vestnik.

Quarterly Lodge 54 Meeting Third

President Ted Kocian called the third quarterly meeting of Lodge No. 54, West, to order at 2 p.m. on September 13, 1987.

All officers were present with the exception of Treasurer Freddie Kaluza.

Everyone present stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

There were no deceased members for the third quarter.

Secretary Anne Emery read the minutes of the May 31st meeting.

There were no corrections or additions to these minutes.

President Kocian read correspondence from SL Vice President Bernie Gebala regarding a monetary award that will be presented to the lodge with the largest membership growth and a letter from SL Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas regarding "Direct Billing" and expressing thanks to Sister Maxine Sefcik for a job well done as Lodge 54 financial secretary. Many long hours were involved in getting our lodge's records ready for direct billing.

It is hard sometimes for lodge members to appreciate the time and effort spent by lodge officers and committee members in lodge work. It seems that there are very few members who are willing to take the responsibility of being an officer in a lodge. This seems to be truly a thankless job.

Sister Maxine Sefcik reported on the following new members Jeffrey Tobala (adult) and Mark'Sinkule, Jr. (juvenile) signed up by Sales Representative Bernice Pustejovsky; a renewal policy for James H. Park by Sales Representative John J. Mynar; and one policy surrender. Our lodge currently has 359 active members and 324 paid - up members for a total of 683 members. She also expressed thanks to the lodge sales representatives for securing new members.

Sister Sefcik then reported on the following members who have attending meeting 100 percent for 1984, 1985 and 1986, namely, Ted Kocian, Maxine Sefcik, Josephine Kocian and Rudy Sefcik. The following members have 91 2/3 percent meeting attendance for the same years; namely, Anne Emery, John J. Mynar, Beanie Kacir, John Emery, Lillie Mynar and Jan Vaculik.

All these named members are qualified to run for delegates for the XXVth SPJST Convention at Temple in June, 1988. The delegates will be elected in the December meeting.

We were happy to see Brother John J. Mynar in our midst and are happy that he is recovering from his recent illness. We were also happy to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Marek and daughter Lisa to our meeting.

There was no action taken by the committee appointed to select our nominee for the "Fraternalist of the Year." This action was tabled because two members of this committee were absent.

The fourth quarterly meeting will be held at 1 p.m. on December 6th. This will be a very important meeting; officers for 1988 will be elected and this will also be our Christmas Party with a traditional dinner and a visit from Santa Claus.

Eleanor Uptmore was the only birthday celebrant present and we all sang "Happy Birthday" to her.

Sister Mildred Grossman was the door prize winner. The meeting was adjourned. Everyone enjoyed refreshments, fellowship and food.

We're looking forward to a large turnout at our next meeting.

Dear Fellow Members & Friends: Our SPJST lodge meeting was held Sunday, September 6 at 2 p.m. with President Bohac presiding. The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. with the members reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Secretary Latham read the minutes of the August meeting and they were approved as read.

We had 21 members present at the meeting. We also were glad to have, as our visitors at the meeting, President Jerry Pechal and Mrs. Pechal of Lodge 47, Seaton.

New members voted on and accepted to our lodge are , David Martin Mills, Dorothy Pajestka, Marie Spearman and Robert J. Spearman.

Additional insurance was taken out for Jeneth Ward and Gary Gersbach.

President Bohac asked the members to attend the District II meeting to be held Sunday, September 20 at Lodge No. 187, Round Rock.

Secretary Latham and Mrs. Latham were given a round of applause; they were celebrating their 46th wedding anniversary on this day, September 6th. We all wish them many more anniversaries.

Jerry Massar, our vice president, gave us an interesting talk on his recent visit to Czechoslovakia. We all enjoyed it.

Door prize winners were Billy Latham, Edward Kunz, Esabel Kunz, Otto and Adell Horelica and Louse Ivicic.

We had some good rains in these parts of the state; they were good for the pastures and to cool things off.

The rains were welcomed by all but the cotton farmers who were in the process of harvesting a good cotton crop.

Some farmers are harvesting as much as 11/2 bales to an acre. I would say the crop is about half harvested. The price of cotton is also good this year.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our recent dances were well attended and enjoyed by our members and their guests. A variety of music is scheduled by the Entertainment Committee for your dancing pleasure.

Brother Amos Kadlecek is home from the hospital and we wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him in the near future.

Our annual Czech Day celebration will be held on Sunday, October 25, 1987. A turkey dinner with all the

trimmings will be served starting at 11 a.m. Adult plates will be $4 and mini plates will be $2.50. Various entertainment is being planned for the afternoon. The Parade of Costumes will begin at 5 p.m., followed by a free dance until 9 p.m. with music by the Vrazel Polka Band. Make your plans now to spend Czech Day, Sunday, October 25th, at Lodge No. 88.

Dear Members and Friends: On Sunday, September 13th, Lodge No. 92 held their monthly meeting, opened by President Albert Kubala.

Officers' reports were given and approved with Vice President John Paprskar substituting for Treasurer Rose Jaworski who was absent. One guest, Mrs. Annie Kadlacek of Buckholts, Texas (sister of Justine Chaloupka), was present.

The attendees learned that work was to begin, the following week, on the basement walk - in cooler, a part of the bar renovation.

Plans are being made for the anniversary celebration in 1988 marking the 50th year of existence of our lodge building. A Planning Committee of four was appointed, namely, Kenneth and Mary Ann Krivanek, Frank ie Tesar and Al Kercho.

Twenty - five birthday cards were mailed in August to senior citizen members. Sympathy cards were sent to families of Zipriano Strittmatter and Benny Pavey. Zipriano's father, Leonard, is our member and Mary Pavey and her deceased husband were frequent guests at our activities and are members of Lodge No. 154.

Margaret Kratky has been in the hospital with a heart problem for the second time, and Bennie Bartek was present at the meeting and almost fully recovered from a severe attack of fire ant bites. May I correct last month's mistake concerning Billie Krivanek -- it was her daughter, Melanie,. who underwent a tonsillectomy, not Billie.

Sharon Gibson, daughter of Mary Ann and Gordon Gibson, and granddaughter of Joe and Anna Juran, is beginning her first year as a teacher at a Bedford High School. Mac and Lily McMillen recently became proud great - grandparents and Alice Lindsey enjoyed a surprised 70th birthday party in Dallas arranged by her children.

Recent summer travelers were Jimmy and Florence Greer who went to Colorado and Mac and Lily McMillen along with the Roy Alholms and Jeff and Natalie Maly attended a Czech Dance Festival in Nebraska.

Martha and Dick Durham, accompanied by Richard Hubenak, spent some time in Las Vegas while my sister, Rose Jaworski, my husband, Mike, and I and daughter, Angela Castell, took in the sights of Hawaii for eight days.

Youth Leader Gordon Hubenak reminded members of the Halloween Dance coming up and, as before, requested as many as possible to "dress up" and win a prize. There will be a cake vvheeliiand our contribution

We had Christine Ermis from Weimar as our visitor at this meeting.

It was nice for you to come, Ms. Ermis.

At this meeting, we elected a new Rules and Regulations Committee which consists of Dennis Hermis, Robert Kieschnick, Bill Merryman, Rosie Schilhab, and Mary Ann Kieschnick. Anyone who has any recommendations or changes should give them to one of these committee members.

Brother Sidon Tumis got the Honorable Mention of being Number Four for insurance on the state level.

He is also Number Three for writing new applicants in the State of Texas.

The $80 capsule attendance prize was won this time by Nelson Roemer -congratulations, Mr. Roemer. The next prize goes back to $10. Come to our meeting because you could be a lucky winner.

Dear Members and Readers: Our monthly meeting of Lodge 142, Houston, was called to order by President Dennis Hermis at 2 p.m.

Sunday, September 13th.

We had 54 members and guests present who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. All of us remained standing for a minute of silence in memory of our departed Sister Frances Barrett. May she rest in peace.

Secretary Alice Jochen read the minutes from the last meeting which stood approved as read with corrections. She also held roll call of officers; all officers were present except Guide Frank Tumis.

Correspondence -- we had an acknowledgement of sympathy from

Members of Lodge 177, Academy be reminded a vote will be taken on changing the Rules and Regulations to have our election of officers at the November meeting. Any pro and con will be appreciated.

Dear Members: The monthly meeting was held at the lodge September 14th. Minutes of the June meeting and all reports were approved.

A letter from Supreme Lodge was read which stated that, if local lodges were interested, the Supreme Lodge would try to get a package insurance for all lodges in Texas and, if that way, maybe cheaper insurance could be obtained.

Two new members were voted on and approved at the meeting, namely, George Dollery and Robert Heath; welcome to SPJST; hope our stay with

Lodge 183 will be a long and enjoyable one.

A motion was made and passed to try and have the 1992 SPJST Convention in Arlington Convention Center.

A Volunteer Committee consisting of Daniel Roznovsky, Angeline Stiborek, Norman Kneschk, Jeanne Roznos and Inez Greenlees agreed to work with the Convention Center and the Supreme Lodge in making the arrangements for the 1992 Convention.

As a member of Arlington Chamber of Commerce, Lodge 183 was active in Business Expo along with members of Grand Prairie Chamber of Commerce.

Jim Wiest set up the booth and manned it on Thursday and Lodge 183 Sales Representatives manned it the rest of the time. The lodge now has many prospects to contact; we hope to make Lodge 183 grow real fast in the future. A gentleman from Arlington won the TV that the lodge gave away at the Business Expo.

There is talk of starting a softball team and possibly a co - ed team for all of you young and young - at - heart members or friends who could become members if enough people are interested. Rudy Rejcek volunteered to be the contact man, so, if interested, call Rudy at (817) 261 - 9560. Let's see if this could be the spark that starts a new fire under SPJST Lodge 183.

There are also some tennis players who would like to have someone to play with them. If interested, call Inez Greenlees (214) 262 - 8811 or Gracie Kneschk (Metro) 572 - 3673. Also, let's see how many bowlers there are in Lodge 183; contact Norman Kneschk (Metro) 572 - 6373.

We were told that Geneva Bragg's grandmother passed away and the lodge wishes to extend their sympathy to Geneva and her family.

On the sick list were Daniel Roznovsky and Angeline Stiborek's father; also, one of Daniel's cousins, Charlie and Geneva Bragg's daughter had surgery, Janie Allen's husband got his hand caught in a hay baler, and Tony Sanchez is on the sick list. I have an aunt and uncle involved in an auto accident, and Gracie's and my friends from Lodge 180, Nancy and Ernest Kelly, have a son - in - law involved in a motorcycle accident. The lodge sends best wishes, hope and prayers that these people get well soon.

The Fraternal Activities Committee named Inez Greenlees as "Fraternalist of the Year" for Lodge 183. Inez has spent many hours working for Lodge 183 and trying new things to help the lodge and SPJST; she is, without a doubt, the one to be named to this honor.

It is almost time for election of officers for the year 1988 and the Nominating Committee for the year are Angeline Stiborek, Gracie Kneschk and Jeanne Roznos. It you would like an office or want to make a change of officers, contact one of the committee members.

At this writing, Patrick Sulak missed getting $5 by not being at the meetng, but B.J. Hlavaty won the cash door prize of $12 by being there.

Some of us complain about hard times and the new things we have to do so I would like to quote a paragraph from a book I just read. The History of Paige and Vicinity by Doris Goerner Laake: "As there were many in Paige who enjoyed their beer, Prohibition (1920 - 1933) caused some changes.

They began making their own "home brew" and had to do their drinking at home. The beer was made by using Blue Ribbon malt, yeast, water, and

There were several types of bottles. One had clamp - on 'patent cap' made of white porceline, another needed a seal which was easily made by cutting a gasket type circle from an old innertube.

Some bottles were made to use a capper and metal top such as a sodawater press - on top. At family gatherings or house parties, hospitality included serving beer, usually warm, but sometimes cooled in a water bucket let down into the cistern or buried in the ground. At times, the beer would spew to the ceiling when opened. A pitcher was used to catch it as it dripped off the ceiling.

Silver Fox 'near beer' was served in the bars during prohibition. le had a beer taste but contained no alcohol."

Let's See. That sounds simple enough, doesn't it?

Lodge 187, Round Rock AUGUST TIP PARTY HELD Over 200 people attended the TIP Party held on August 23rd at Lodge No. 187. Present at the TIP Party, were members and friends of the lodge and members of the Thrall and Hutto Booster Clubs who had volunteered some of their time and talents at the lodge during the past couple of months. The TIP Party allowed those associated with the lodge with an opportunity to talk, socialize, play games, dance, enjoy a delicious meal and just have a great time.

Red Oman, Whimpy Gainer, and Arnold Leschber did a great job preparing fried fish, hush puppies, French fries, and chicken nuggets for the meal. The women of the lodge also did an outstanding job in preparing the remainder of the meal and the desserts.

Two hundred dollars in cash door prizes were given away to those who were present at the TIP Party.

But what does "Let's See" really mean?

To many of us it is only a figure of speech.

But the most significant meaning to those who have a vision impairment "Let's See" has a very personal and vital meaning.

There are some whose vision can be -immeasurable improved with the help of Eye - Glasses, but there is a big problem precluding self - help because of financial strain. If only a few dollars could be spared from a very meager pay check maybe such person might help himself, but that is not always possible.

Uh huh, you say -- but how does that involve me?

Well, I might just be able to answer this question.

We, at Lodge No. 88, Houston, have a very beneficial assistance program attempting to, in a very small way, to aid those indigent persons by collecting old eye - glasses from our members and, in turn, donating these glasses to the Houston Lighthouse.

These old discards which we can no longer use, because old father time has finally caught up with us and told us "Get Yourself a New Pair," now becomes a piece of junk that we stash away in an old file cabinet, dresser drawer or who knows, maybe ends up in the attic where all of the good old stuff goes.

And the pack - rat in us inherently tells us not to throw them away because someday we might find a need knowing deep down within our inner self that we can never use them again.

But, I have good news for you.

They can be used again by assisting someone in need.

The lens, through the assistance of The Lighthouse of Houston, are re ground to prescription needs and are given to those in need.

Now, knowing this, how can anyone of us call our old discards a piece of junk when we have heard the old axiom that one man's junk may be another's treasure.

Now don't go scurrying up that attic stairway and maybe missing a step and ending up wrapped in plaster around your torso. But have a "Let's See" around your abode and gather all of those old junky eye - glasses for this worthy cause.

Bring them to the lodge office any time and our secretary, Sister Shirley Stonaker, will tag your name on them, or maybe you might want to bring them on meeting nights, or even lug them to a Saturday night dance. By whatever means of delivery, they will eventually end up in Homer's hands who will take the ball forward.

As a matter of information there have been more than four hundred (400) pairs, as well as some extra lens, that have been collected since our "Let's See" program was initiated in August, 1986.

Many contributing members' names have been mentioned in prior issues of the Vestnik and here's a listing-of more names of recent donors.

"Let's See" who these most :ecent Good Samaritans are: Tim and Rosalee Kostom Andy and Alice Braikovich Janette and Alvin Raymond King and Helen Hegwood So, Ma, get busy now and send Pa up that attic stairway.

Circle Of Czech Women

Our September 3rd meeting was called to order by President Zvolanek.

She led us in a pledge to our flag and then introduced guests, Betty Jean Grier, Phil Reames, Roy Alholm, Charlie Kocian, Bob Zvolanek, Julkus Podhrasky, and little Jessica.

Minutes of our August 6th meeting were read by Secretary Sebestik.

Treasurer Vicki Kohn gave her report.

Correspondence was read by Mary Sebestik from the following: A card from Alaska written by Ann and Bob Zvolanek sending their greetings while on their cruise, Revocable Proxy card from Richardson Savings and Loan, Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, Arthritis Foundation, Visiting Nurses Association.

We discussed whether or not to fill out the Revocable Proxy card from Richardson Savings and decided we should.

A motion was also made to pay Bessie Kalich for the cost of printing of our membership books.

Membership Chairman Bertha Malik announced we have another new member, Betty Jean Grier. We welcome you Betty!

Bertha also gave us Betty's address to mark down in our membership

Sunshine Committee -- Liddie Pavelka mailed get well cards to Mary Sebestik, Georgia Long and Dick Ground. Georgia also was to be a recipient of a gift but her wishes were that, in lieu of the gift, she wanted the money to go into our Krouzek Fund.

September birthday celebrants were Helen Macik, Virginia Blatney, Frances Jurcik, Bessie Kalich and Bertha Malik. "Happy Birthday" was sung for these members.

Hostesses for this month were Bessie Reames, Aggie Mach, Martha Kocian, and Dorothy Reznik.

Bessie Reames reported that the American - Czech Cultural Society has completed the program for Czech Day at the State Fair. Bessie also said help is needed in the kolache booth that Vicki Kohn is in charge of. She also announced the Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council meeting at the Catholic Czech Club on September 15th. WFLA No. 401 will be hosts. Bessie invited everyone to come out to the Klobase Festival held at the Czech Club September 26th and 27th.

Bertha Podhrasky announced that the "Miss Texas" entry in the Miss America contest this year is a SPJST member. Bertha also reminded everyone of the 75th anniversary of Sokol. A motion was made and passed that our Circle purchase an ad in their Souvenir Book.

We discussed our Christmas Party.

A motion was made and passed that we hold our party at Sokol Ziska this year and have our dinner catered.

Alice Roberts reminded us that we never went on the Texas Queen Boat Excursion trip. We need to think about -.hen we want to go. Let's not pass this opportunity up.

Lydia Alholm announced that Mary Pavey's husband passed away suddenly. Mary and her husband are members of SPJST Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth.

Zdenka Skotak donated a crocheted collar which was won by Vicki Kohn.

The other door prize donated by Alice Roberts was won by Lillian Moran.

Other donations were made by Sisters Rose Kopecek and Josephine Kankrlik.

Now for news of our members -Bertha Malik's trip in July covered visiting Iceland, Greenland, and Faeroe Islands. Bertha has now been in 80 countries. Libbie Elsik attended her 50th high school reunion in Topeka, Kansas. Dorothy Reznik with husband, George and son, Jonathan, took off for a nice tour of Colorado, New Mexico and then the Texas Panhandle visiting our nephews and nieces; came back to Dallas with a car trunk loaded with vegetables from Hereford, Texas. Some of our Circle members were at Mildred Chervenka's home celebrating her granddaughter's second birthday. Little Danica Oates is also the granddaughter of Sister Helen Oates, and daughter of Dianne and Eddie Oates. She had a very nice crowd celebrate her big day and those present also cheered the Dallas Cowboys on to their first victory that day. Little Danica probably couldn't understand why all these big people were yelling and screaming so much.

Those Cowboys make people do strange things.

Just a few more days before we once again celebrate Czech Day at the State Fair. Wouldn't it be wonderful to make this the biggest one we ever had?

It doesn't just happen automatically! Come out and wear your Czech costumes whether homemade or original. Be proud to be out there with all your people and enjoy meeting Czechs from outside our own area.

Sewing Circle

This newsletter will cover the months of July, August and September. There were 22 members and 5 guests present at our July 9th meeting. The guests were Lisa Zabojnik, Leslie Vrla, Ernest Huff, Joe Houdek and Bob Zvolanek.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. Secretary Georgia Tupy read the minutes and Treasurer Georgia Zabojnik gave the treasurer's report. Both reports were approved as read.

Sunshine Chairwoman Libbie Wisniewski passed out birthday cards to birthday sisters present. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters Agnes Janecka, Hattie Lekar, Rosie Mynarcik, Annie Novak, Mary Sill and Mary Vrla.

A quilt was quilted for Sister Alice Roberts. She thanked the quitters and purchased a ticket for each quitter.

The tickets are for the drawing.

Thanks to the following who made donations: Sister Roberts for quilting her quilt, and Sister Liddie Pavelka for plants for sale. Money received from the plant sale went to the Circle. Sister Zvolanek brought a shrimp plant.

Sisters took cuttings from the plant.

Door prize was furnished by Mildred Tupy Baker of Anaheim, California.

The lucky winner was Sister Millie Vytopil.

I usually don't comment on our luncheons but I would like to say that we always have a delicious lunch and plenty of it. We have good cooks in our Circle. Before we adjourned, we sang "My Country 'Tis of Thee" in Czech.

Our August 13th meeting was well attended. However,I did not get the exact count. Our guests were Dorothy SharFell, Milan Dujka, Wesley Tupy, Bill Foit, Bob Zvolanek, Julius Podhrasky, Ernest Huff and Joe Houdek. The meeting was called to order by President Sadie Kubin. After the Pledge of Allegiance, the officers gave their reports, which were approved as read. We voted to give a money donation for the Abused Children Program.

A quilt was quilted for Sister Mary Polasek. Sister Polasek thanked the quilters.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters Elizabeth Crone, Margie Macalik, Anne Mullins, Mary Nemec, Mary Novak and Anne Zvolanek.

Birthday cards were given to sisters present.

On the sick list are Sister Verlie Lipscomb and Sister Georgia Morales' father - in - law. A get well wish is wished to them soon.

Door prize was brought by Sister Millie Vytopil. The lucky winner was our guest, Dorothy Sharrell. Plants for sale were brought by Sisters Agnes Janecka and Liddie Pavelka. Money received from the sale went to the Circle. Sister Rosie Mynarcik donated two bags of quilt batting. On behalf of the Circle, thanks for the donations.

Sister Anne and Bob Zvolanek were surprised by Anne's family with a beautiful anniversary cake on their 50th wedding anniversary. The cake was shared with everyone present. The Circle presented them with a lovely card and a money gift. Sister Zvolanek thanked the Circle. They celebrated their anniversary on the Sun Princess cruise ship to Alaska. Sister Sadie Kubin vacationed in San Francisco, California, and Mexico. All these travelers reported to have had a wonderful time. The Jurcik reunion was held August 2nd, with about 150 present. The oldest present was Vojteska Jurcik Janicek and the farthest came from Brookville, Illinois. Reunions are always a lot of fun. Before we adjourned, Sister Pavelka read a humorous letter titled "A Polish Mother Writing to Her Son." Thanks to the Lodge 92 Ladies' Circle of Fort Worth for passing this on to us.

Our September 10th meeting was not so well attended due to bad weather. I did not attempt to drive in the high winds and heavy rains.

However, the day ended up warm and sunny. Texas weather is very unpredictable. There were 17 members and 2 guests present. The guests were Joe Houdek and Julius Podhrasky.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. After the Pledge of Allegiance, the officers gave their reports which were approved as read.

Sister Wisniewski passed out birthday cards to birthday sisters present.

A card sent to the Circle from Alaska by Sister Anne Zvolanek was read.

The Circle voted to place an ad in the Souvenir Program for Sokol of Dallas 75th anniversary, which will be celebrated on November 1, 1987.

A quilt was quilted for Sister Albie Nesuda.

On the sick list are Sisters Annie Mullins and Olga Ewing. Since our last meeting, Sister Mary Bouska had surgery and, at present, is in Intensive Care in Baylor Hospital in Ennis. Each one is wished a speedy recovery. Also, just heard the news that Sister Verlie Lipscomb passed away. We express our sympathy to the family. Sister Mullins thanked the Circle for the get well card and money gift.

Sister Margie Macalik has a new granddaughter and Sister Annie Jaska is the great - grandmother.

Congratulations to them and the proud parents. Somewhere down the line, my family on my mother's side, is related to the new mother.

Czech Day at the Dallas State Fair will be held on October 18, 1987.

Klub Kontinental Group Returns From ECF Tour Rudy Klecka of Klub Kontinental and group of 25 persons have just returned from Czechoslovakia as guests of the "Slusovice" collective farm of their 12 - day stay. Farmers who participated in the exchange were from Houston, Victoria, Richmond, Rosenberg, Hallettsville, Caldwell, Petrolia, Aquilla, Yorktown, Dallas and East Bernard.

The exchange of the Czech collective farm is due in East Bernard Friday, November 6 to 20, 1987. East Bernard will host the 25 leading officials of Czechoslovakia's Number One collective farm for 12 days, and they will tour our community, farms and surrounding areas.

The lodging will be provided by local East Bernard residents. Since this is the first farm exchange with the "Slusovice" collective farm, Henrietta and I believe East Bernard residents and area people will open their doors and hearts, that this exchange will succeed and contribute to mutual understanding between America and Czechoslovak people and to further development of friendly relations between the two countries. East Bernard and surrounding communities have their roots from Czechoslovakia, since many of our forefathers and parents immigrated to Texas 75 to 100 years ago.

We know East Bernard citizens will welcome and respond to the first such exchange program. You, as an individual or as an organization, may contribute to this effort by offering your help such as transportation, lodging, meals, socials and entertainment.

The following 12 - day program was enjoyed by the Klub Kontinental group at the collective farm of "Slusovice."

September 16 -- arrived in Prague and transferred to the Panorama Hotel with a welcome lunch.

September 17 -- a full day city tour of Prague, lunch at "Na Vikarce" restaurant, dinner at typical Czech restaurant "Starocek's Rychta" with beer and music at Hotel Pariz.

September 18 -- tour of glass factory "Bohemia" in Podebrady, tour of castles Karlstejn and Konopiste with lunch; in evening attended the National Theatre performance.

September 19 -- morning was free for shopping in Prague, departed by "Slusovice" motorcoach to the cooperative farm in the heart of Moravia with a welcome dinner.

September 20 -- made excursion to Svaty Hostyn pilgrimage church for services, had a typical lunch at a Czech restaurant at Rusava.

September 21 -- all - day touring of the collective farm of different aspects of their operations, lunch at the "Derby Centrum," dinner with officials of the "Slusovice" collective farm in restaurant "Reneta" with folk music.

September 22 -- toured the collective farm as cattle breeding, poultry, horse breeding; had an excursion to nearby city of Gottwaldov, formerly Zlin, city of museum of shoes, saw the film studio at Kudlov, dinner at "Koliba" restaurant in Interhotel Moskva?

September 23 -- attended the cattle and horse exhibitions, toured the spa

of Luhavovice, had an excursion to factory of "Sloko Jelinek" with tasting its prune brandy Slivovice, with dinner at Vizovice.

September 24 -- toured the glass factory of "Karolinka," the open air museum of restored Wallachian buildings at Roznov pod Radhostem in the Beskydy mountains, with lunch and continued to visit the brewery at Nosovice with tasting.

September 25 -- an all - day tour to south of Moravia to Buchov and the castle Buchlovice, and visited another collective farm "Mir" at Prace and wine tasting at Cejkovice wine cellars with folk music of "Podluzan" from Breclav, who made a tour of Texas in 1986.

September 26 -- the morning was free to shop in Gottwaldov and dinner and meeting with the workers of the "Slusovice" collective farm with brass music "Vseminaka" " and "Slusovjanka."

September 27 -- this day was free to visit relatives/friends or stay at the Slusovice Hotel in the mountains.

September 28 -- transported by the "Slusovice" motorcoach to Prague for departure home.

Karl Czerny (1791-1857)

Karas from Houston This eulogical article was not put together at the 130th anniversary of the passing away of an outstanding pianist, musical teacher and composer, Karl Czerny (Karel Cern9), who wrote over a thousand compositions. He is though mainly remembered for his remarkable books of piano exercises on which piano students are nurtured.

Karl Czerny was born on February 20, 1791 in Vienna of the Czech and Polish lineage. (Some sources state that some of his family roots came from the so called Austrian Galicia, a region Austria usurped at the third division of Poland in 1795. See my Czech article titled K videtisk9m v9roeim, "At the Occasion of Vienna's Anniversaries," printed in six continuous installments in the Czech section of the SPJST Vestnik at the end of 1984. -- The spelling of Czerny's name suggests the Polish heritage as far as his family tree is concerned; the Czech spelling of the same would have been Cerni and Tscherny would have been spelling of this name in the German language.)

Karl's father, Vaclav Czerny, a piano teacher from Nymburk in Bohemia, gave him piano lessons for 4 years. "I was able to play little pieces on the piano to my parents when I was three years old," he recalled in his autobiography, and by the time he was ten he had acquired an imposing repertoire. A friend of the family, Vienna's violinist Krumpholz, introduced the young prodigy to Beethoven, who immediately accepted the boy as a pupil.

Ludwig van Beethoven, the greatest orchestral composer of the 19th century was born December 16, 1770 and died March, 1827 in Vienna.

While classed among the German masters, the Dutch van in his name (which is not a sign of nobility) indicates his descent from a family in the Netherlands (Holland), the world's musical center in the 15th and 16th centuries. -- Czerny studied intensively with Ludwig van Beethoven between 1800 and 1803, more intermittently for another decade From 1804 to 1806 he also studied with Hummel and, in 1810, gained valuable guidance from Clementi.

Johann Nepomuk Hummel was born November 14, 1778 in Bratislava, since 1918 capitol city of Slovakia, and died October 17, 1837 in Weimar presently East Germany. Bratislava was called, in Hummel's time, by its German name Pressburg or Poscony by its Hungarian name. Prior to the end of WWI Bratislava was often called Pre g purk by many Czech and Slovak people; this name also appears in the very popular song from the Southern Moravia titled "Pod Pregpurkem kraj Dunaja." Hummel's father became music director in one of the theaters of Vienna and removed his family there when Johann Nepomuk was about 7 years old. Little Hummel got the attention of Mozart, who took him into his own family and taught him for more than 2 years. The boy's talent made a great impression on all the musicians with whom he came in contact, and the list of his teachers takes in most of the masters of the day, including Haydn. At the age of 9 his father took him, on two year's tour, through Germany, Denmark, Scotland, England and Holland. He wrote his composition Variations for the piano in London and afterwards continued his studies in Vienna. He

was soon among the best pianists of the time, being also a teacher of the piano music and having several important musical positions at the different courts of Europe.

Muzio Clementi, who also influenced Karl Czerny, was an Italian composer and pianist. He was born January 24, 1752 in Rome, Italy and died March 10, 1832 at Eversham in England. At the age of 12 he wrote a successful Mass for 4 voices, and had made such a progress in the pianoforte that an Englishman, Peter Beckford, took him to England to complete his studies. He soon became the director of the orchestra of the Italian opera in London. He became a composer and he was unequalled as a teacher. His most important compositions were 60 sonatas for the pianoforte and the great collection of studies known as Gradus and Parnassum (1817), a work of high educational value. He represented perhaps the highest point of technique of his era, and his influence on modern execution has led to his being characterized as "The father of pianoforte playing." Among his pupils were Field, Cramer, Moscheles, Kalkbrenner and Mayerbeer. Muzio Clementi was interred in famous Westminster Abbey in London. -Let us return to Karl Czerny.

Displaying remarkable progress, this outstanding pianist soon won the support of such notable aristocrats as Prince Lichnowsky and Archduke Rudolph, to whom he had been introduced by Ludwig van Beethoven.

-- Archduke Rudolph was a member of the infamous Hapsburg family which ruled Austria since 1278 until 1918.

(The other branch of Hapsburgs ruled Spain since 1516 to 1700.) The Hapsburg family, as such, had its humble beginning in a little castle in present Switzerland. To block the upcoming election of the Czech King Otakar II, the most powerful king on the European continent at that time, as an Emperor of Germany, the electors selected, in a hum - bug election, Rudolph Hapsburg to this status.

After defeat to Pfemysl Otakar II (he lost because of a treachery) and his death on the battlefield, Rudolph I Hapsburg became a ruler of Austria.

Hapsburgs "inherited," later in 1526, after death of the Czech King Ludvik Jagellonsk9 in the battle at Mohae against Turks, our old country, that is a large Kingdom of Bohemia, consisting of Bohemia (Cechy) proper, Moravia, Upper and Lower Silesia, Kladsko and Upper and Lower Lusatia. Kingdom of Bohemia was thus almost 3 times larger than Hapsburg's Austria. The capitol city of this new state, which also included Hungary and other territories, was Prague almost to the Thirty Years' War. Because of the religious strife and the just - mentioned war, Vienna became the capitol city of this conglomerate state, known to the outside simply as Austria.

On December 21, 1867, this country was divided into 2 parts with so - called dualist constitution and called the Austro - Hungarian Empire. Although Czechs and the other Sla ys had a clear majority there, this dual monstrosity oppressed them to the end of WWI in 1918. Prince Lichnowsky, an ardent supporter of Karl Czerny, was a member of the old noble Czech family with large estates in Silesia and Moravia. He was the well - known benefactor of music and art; he gave, for example, an annual stipend of 600 florins and later additional annuity of 4000 florins to keep Ludwig van Beethoven in Vienna.

Karl Czerny, the subject of this eulogical article, planned an extensive concert of Europe, but political unrest prevented him from realizing this project. (The Napoleonic Wars were going on at that time.) After several appearances in Vienna, Czerny decided to devote himself to teaching and composition rather than to concert work. Except for brief trips to Prague and Leipzig in 1836, Paris and London in 1837, and Italy in 1846, he remained in Vienna until his death. He became one of the most esteemed music teachers in Europe; among his many pupils were for instance Liszt, Thalberg and Leschetizky.

Franz Liszt was born on October 22, 1811 at Raiding near Odenburg and died at Baireuth on July 31, 1886. He made his first public debut as a pianist at the age of nine, trained under Czerny and Salieri. In 1823rhernade a sensational tour of Vienna, Prague, Munich, Paris and other chief European cities and composed his first operetta Don Sancho in 1824 at the age of 13. Later he made a triumphal progress through practically whole Europe and he was knighted by Frederick William IV and decorated by almost every court in Europe. In 1861, he settled in Rome and in 1865 he took minor orders in the Catholic Church becoming known as Abbe Liszt. In 1870 he was made president of the Royal Musical Academy in Budapest, Hungary and, henceforth, lived in turn there, at Rome in Italy and at Weimar, in present East Germany. Liszt produced a very large volume of compositions; to make just a list of his work would require to write a separate article. Sigismund Thalberg, the second pupil of Karl Czerny, mentioned in this article, was from Geneva, Switzerland. He was born on January 7, 1812 and he passed away on April 27, 1871 in Naples, Italy. (He was the natural son of Prince Moritz Dietrichstein.) He studied under Czerny and, by the age of 14, was an accomplished player. In 1830, at the age of 18 he made a concert tour of Germany and in 1835 - 1845 toured Belgium, Holland, England, Russia and Spain. In 1855 - 1856 he visited South America and the United States.

He composed 2 operas Florinda in 1851 and Cristina di Suezia in 1855. He also wrote numerous short pieces for piano, including fantasies on themes from various operas. Theodor Leschetizky, whom _I mention as a piano including Etudes, Sonatas, born at Lancut, near Lemberg in Galicia on June 22, 1830 and died on November 15, 1915 in Vienna.

(Lemberg was a German name of a big historical and industrial city of Lvov, which was in Eastern Poland from 1918 until Fall of 1939; this territory with the city of Lvov is part of Russia since the end of the WWII). Young Theodor Leschetizky received his first piano instruction from his father, a prominent teacher in Vienna and then he studied under Czerny. After a successful concert tour in 1864, Leschetizky was made a professor of the pianoforte at the Conservatory of Saint Petersburg (later Petrograd, now Leningrad), where he turned out many illustrious pupils. In 1878, he returned to Vienna with an ever - increasing reputation. He composed some very elaborate pieces for piano, some songs and an Opera Die erste Falte (The First Wrinkle) in 1867. Among his famous pupils, was for example, Ignac Paderewski, later a well - known pianist and a premier of the Polish Government after WWI. Coming back again to Karl Czerny, the celebrated Sunda y afternoon

musicals at Czerny's home were attended by Beethoven, Hummel, Clementi and Liszt, among many other renowned musicians. Czerny's first published composition appeared at 1805, when he was only fourteen. It was the Variations concertantes for violin and piano, a series of variations on a theme by a friend of his parents, Viennese violinist Krumpholz, already mentioned at the beginning of this eulogical article. Although it was thirteen years before the publication of his second composition, a Rondo brilliante for 4 - hand piano, he subsequently became an extremely prolific composer, creating huge choral works, as well as compositions of every variety for piano. Many of his works had a great vogue in the early nineteenth century and realized a fortune for his publishers, Cappi and Diabelli. "His Writings," said Leschetizky, " Lacked depth, but no one can deny that they show a great knowledge of form, of the resources of the instrument, and of all the pianistic effects." Except for the occasional revival of a piano composition (Russian - born American pianist Vladimir Horowitz has recorded the Variations on La Ricordanza) virtually none of Czerny's works have survived beyond the several volumes of piano studies and exercises which Clementi encouraged him to prepare. "I practice Czerny's exercises for half an hour every day," Liszt once said. There is hardly a pianist since that time who has not profited from these studies.

"Czerny understood better than anyone else the simple, primitive form from which all piano passage writing is evolved," said Hugo Riemann. "His studies, therefore, are of immense help in the earlier stages of development."

Hugo Riemann, German author and music teacher, was born on July 18, 1849 and died in 1919 in Leipzig, in present East Germany. He served in the Franco - Prussian War and later studied at the Conservatory at Leipzig where, in 1878, he became university lecturer of music. In 1880 he removed to Bromberg and, in 1881 - 1890, he was a teacher of theory and piano at the Conservatory there. Later he taught at the Conservatory at Wiesbaden in 1890 - 95. Returning to Leipzig as a lecturer in 1895, he became professor of music there in 1901 and a director in 1908. He wrote much and authoritatively on the teaching and theory of music, and his musical compositions are designed to aid the teaching of music. He also edited many works of older composers. His most important work is Musik - Lexicon from 1882; eight edition dated 1916 attained world wide recognition.

The most celebrated Czerny's pedagogical volumes were Die Schule der Gelaufigkeit (The School of the Fluency) and Die Shule der Fingerfertigkeit (The School of the Finger Readiness). His most valuable studies and exercises were assembled in three volumes and issued under the collective title Complete Theoretical and Practical Piano School. Czerny's nervous system and physical resources were severely taxed by his active life.

In or about 1850 he was forced to give up most of his activities. He died in Vienna at the age of 66 years on July 15, 1857. He never married, and was survived by no immediate relatives.

His large fortune was distributed among many charities and Benevolent institutions, including the Vienna Conservatory. His contemporary C.F. Pohl described Karl Czerny as "Modest and simple in manner of life, courteous and friendly in his behavior,

Wednesday, September 30, 1987-VESTNIK/11 just and kindly in his judgment on matters of art, and helpful to all young artists who came his way. His disposition was so gentle that he shrank from a harsh or coarse word even spoken in jest." Czerny's principal works were in the Chamber Music, in the Choral Music, in the Orchestral Music and Piano Music.

His Chamber Music consists of Quartets and Trios. His Choral Music consists of 300 Graduals and Offertories; 24 Masses and 4 Requiems. His Orchestral Music deals with Concertos, Overtures and Symphonies. His Piano Music has hundreds of Compositions for the piano including Etudes, Sonatas, Variations and so forth. The publications dealing with Czerny's life and his achievements are as follows: The Music Masters, Vol. 2 (Editor A.L. Bacharach); The Great Pianists (H.C. Schonberg; Etude -- June 1909); Musical Quarterly (July 1956).

YOUTH LEADER Pottery is the art of taking wet, lifeless clay, turning it on a wheel until the desired shape is reached and firing the final product into hardness in a kiln or oven. It can be molded into beautiful, living creations that can be painted either in floral or pastoral scenes or in geometric patterns. It may also be left plainly painted in a neutral color and, either way, it is very practical, useful and ornamental.

The early Czechs not only made pottery locally for kitchen use, but also as accessories for decoration throughout the house.

Pottery was produced practically in each territory by local folk artisans in all areas of present - day Czechoslovakia. It included not only the more elaborate types, uniquely shaped and richly painted, but also the simple and practical pieces which were more of a utility type used for daily household needs.

The famous white Majolica pottery, beautifully - ornamented with naturalistic, figure or floral design is typical for the eastern territories.

Unfortunately, it is very expensive but well worth the investment.

In the beginning, the artists were limited in their color choices, mostly the four basic colors of blue, yellow, green and purple. A typical addition of the 18th century was the introduction of the vivid red and the use of glaze to produce a more enameled appearance.

The local potters and painters mostly disappeared during the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. They were unable to compete successfully with the more efficient factory - made pottery being mass - produced which was cheaper, harder and often more resilient than their product. Nevertheless, workshops of local artisans are still producing pottery in smaller quantities in both Slovakia and Moravia.

While the factory - made pottery has been modernized to meet present demands, the rural designs are preferred because of their unique, traditional patterns.

The cold, wet, limpy clay turns into a living creation appreciated by all for its usefulness and its beauty and is a very skilled craft. ***

From The District Youth Counselor District II Meeting A Huge Success The officers of District II wish to thank all the members for their attendance and contributions to our recent Fall Meeting and Fun Carnival.

The support of all the local lodges and individuals was generous and greatly appreciated. I will not name the individuals or lodges because everyone in attendance contributed food and game prizes. We hope you enjoyed the afternoon.

Our goal of 300 was not reached due to many conflicts of area local lodges, but we were very pleased with our attendance of 231. That was great!

A special thanks to our hosting Lodge No. 187, Round Rock and all the members for their fine hospitality and generous amounts of good sausage, barbecue beef and trimmings.

All of your hard work and fine facilities were greatly appreciated. We also wish to thank everyone else for all of your help because it was a combined effort of all of you who made that afternoon a success. All local lodge donations were very much appreciated.

Sokol kiika 75th Anniversary Sokol 2i2ka of Dallas will be celebrating its 75th anniversary November 1, 1987. The celebration will take place at the Sokol Athletic Center, 7448 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, Texas, the home of Sokol Zizka and SPJST Lodge Jaro No. 130.

The festivities shall start at 11 a.m. to 12 noon with a social hour, followed with a Czech dinner of roast pork, beef, klobase, sauerkraut, gravies, dumplings, breads and salad, a short gymnastic program, speeches and music by Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra. We shall also have awarding of longevity membership pins.
