*** We are publishing the district seminar photos and reports plus back pages as they arrive; one comment your editor would like to make and that is that those of you who are taking pictures, PLEASE try to use black/white film and try to be not more than 12 or so feet away from the object or person, preferably 10 feet or less; you will have much better pictures and be sure you have a good contrast between the background and whatever you are taking a picture of, be it a person or something - white background and white faces and dresses or suits, clothes, etc. and vice versa -- NOT GOOD!

The 200th Anniversary of the signing of our U.S. Constitution was celebrated at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at Constitution Hall Thursday, September 17, 1987, indeed an historic event! We published the entire Constitution in the August 5, 1987 issue on pages 11, 12 and 16 and the 26 Amendments in the August 26 and September 2, 1987 issues on pages 16 (back pages) of both issues. This editor sincerely and fraternally hopes you read all of them and hopes you saved those pages for your reference because YOU WILL NOT regret it!

*** The District Fall Meetings are listed in the Bulletin Board in each issue; keep the dates. and places in mind and do your best to attend them because you certainly will enjoy the fraternal fellowship.

*** Just before the school bus arrives, your child develops a stomachache, or refuses to get out of bed, or simply announces balefully: "I don't want to go to school.'' Sound familiar? Fear of school is quite common and perfectly normal in most cases; it can occur at any age to boys and girls alike. But it is most common in kindergarten, when many children first leave the familiarity of home for the wilds of the classroom, and around age 12, when youngsters enter junior high. The sixth and seventh grades confront students with a greater academic challenge and increased demands for independence just at the time the hormones begin roiling, and these expectations can precipitate a crisis. Handled correctly, school fears should quickly subside.

But for almost 1 in every 50 children, apprehensive reluctance turns into a paralyzing phobia that may demand professional help.

It's often not school but something children associate with school that really frightens them. The cause may be connected with school -· a playground bully, for example, or being teased by classmates; sometimes an event in the family -· .a new baby or a parent's illness -- may be the trigger.

In the latter case, it's not so much a reluctance to go to school as it is a desire to stay home to make sure things are all right. Some children, for no obvious reason, suffer severe separation anxiety that may take patience and ingenuity to overcome. ln extreme cases, children may refuse to go to school for weeks or even months.

Fear of that magnitude may be a symptom of more serious problems.

An 1 i - year - old boy, for example, was so scared that he would not even play outside his house, much less go to school. The child's fear reflected family problems -- a clinging mother and an emotionally distant father who spent most of his time away from home.

The best way to handle school fear, psychologists advise, is to sit down with your child and gently find out what it's all about. Small children or kids who have trouble talking about what's wrong may be able to draw pictures of their fears. If your child complains of headache, sore throat, nausea or other physical symptoms, see your pediatrician to rule out illness.

When you talk to your child, don't raise your voice.' Avoid ultimatums and threats; they won't help and probably will provoke tears or temper tantrums. Make sure your child knows you understand. Emphasize that while it may take a few days, eventually the child will make new friends. That may make going to school less frightening, perhaps even fun. Try giving a very young child something of yours -- a wallet, a photograph or a bracelet -- to take to class as a keepsake. You can accompany your child to school for several days, but make sure it's clear that you won't do it forever. It may help to tell your child where you will be and how to contact you. Explain the situation to teachers and school officials. If the problem persists, consult the school guidance counselor or contact your local mental · health association for a referral. Be patient. It may take some time to work things out.

*** An estimated 95 percent of all children receive vaccinations against debilitating childhood diseases. Most school districts require them. But many adults fail to keep their vaccinations up - to - date, risking serious illness or even death, says the Mayo Clinic. Here are some examples: Influenza -- only about 20 percent of persons at high risk, including everybody over age 65, get the vaccine each year. Pneumococcal pneumonia -- most elderly people and others at greatest risk haven't been immunized.

Rubella -- about 20 percent of women of childbearing age are susceptible to German measles, which can cause miscarriages and birth defects.

Tetanus ·· if boosters aren't given every 10 years, effectiveness against deadly bacteria introduced through puncture wounds drops seriously.

Diphtheria -· half of the nation's adults may not be protected. Hepatitis B -· less than a quarter of people at high risk have been vaccinated.

Measles -- a minor illness for most American children, it can be very serious for adults. When is the last time you reviewed your immunization :·(: ..:~~·;·d?

There were 42 sales representatives in attendance at these workshops. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those who are not active to come join us.

Dear Members and Friends: Our monthly meeting was held Sunday, September 13 at 1 p.m. and it was convened by President Johnnie Krizan with all officers present. The pledge to the flag was recited by Tammi and Celia Dobecka and all members present; then Tammi Dobecka recited the SPJST Pledge.

We had reading of the minutes by Secretary Barbara Hykel, a report from the treasurer and the financial secretary. All reports were approved as read.

Get well cards were sent to Robert Dobecka who injured his knee by working with the cattle; he had to use crutches for a while and now is getting around better. Easter Melina was injured by falling off the steps at her home; she is doing much better now, too. Brother L.B. Dobecka was in the West Community Hospital for a few days; he, too, is back at the West Rest Haven. We hope these folks will have better days to come. Also, a get well card was sent to Josephine Wachmann.

Brother George Straten reported on the Trustees' meeting that was held September 9 at 8 p.m. A discussion was about the need of an electric coffee pot for the hall and 3 electric roast cookers; it was voted to let the president check on these items and take further action at our meeting. At our Sunday's meeting, the membership voted to purchase these items.

A report was given by the Westfest Committee on activities and the work that took place at the Westfest. The main leaders were Brother Robert Dobecka and Sister Lydia Dobecka, leading everything and oversee to have everything ready for us in the booth sales. They were there both days from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. closing time and cleaning up for next day's booth sales.

Brother Eddie Ray Hrabal was also a great help for these 2 days cooking 650 pounds of sausage and keeping the other food warm by using his own equipment. The others who served those 2 days in the booth for 4 to 8 hours each one knows what a hard and tiresome time this was and is; there was no time for having fun. We also had some good members working at the lodge hall for 2 days peeling 650 pounds of potatoes and cooked them to be brought to our booth. There was also a lot of baking done at the hall.

We baked 85 strudels, 95 dozens of fruit and cheese kolache, 210 dozen of sausage kolache and all this work was done by our members of the lodge; too many to name all; those who worked know they helped. Our Westfest project turned out very successful. The lodge president and its members want to say "thank you" very much to all for the hard work well done.

We also had a pretty float in the parade that won third prize.

Donations voted on was to donate a gift to Penelope to their auction, Tours picnic and the Chalk - Bluff Fire Department -- Bellmead.

A committee was appointed to find a way to store our booth; if any

member has a place to store it, let the committee know; it would be appreciated very much.

Door prize went to Sister Georgia Soupak. Progressive prize -- name drawn was Georgia Skerik - $10, and second was Mark Pavelka - $3.

Our next meeting is October 4 at 1 p.m. Lunch will be served before the meeting, so try to come because we have some very delicious meals served.

At the last meeting, we had a fish fry dinner served by the Eddie Hrabal family.

17, New Tabor Meeting

Dear Readers: Lodge No 17, NeW Tabor held its regular monthly meeting on September 6 with all officers present.

New members were Doyle Petty, John Petty, Linda Mendey, Codey Freeland, Casey Freeland, Lori Mavdez, Nicholas Mavdez and Charles Davis.

Resolutions were read for Brother Wesley Clepper, Sister Mary Nabelek, and Brother Harry Bowers, Sr. The trustees will meet after our regular meeting next month to discuss the home dues.

The Tarok players of New Tabor have been challenged by Seaton Lodge No. 47 to a tournament on September 26th. Yes, we did accept the challenge.

The winning lodge will take home a traveling trophy.

Lodge No. 17 held a very short meeting due to the wedding of Brother Dick Dusek and Angela Vavra being held the same afternoon.

Our next meeting will be on October 4th at 2 p.m.

From Lodge 32, Victoria Report

The Victoria SPJST Lodge No. 32 meeting was held on September 7, with 12 members and one guest present.

President Franklin Elles presided. We were happy to have had Edward Malik's wife, Joan, as a guest.

State Senator Kenneth Armbrister was our speaker. He was very informative on our State laws and all the various State legislation. He stated that the legislature meets in the odd number of years, starting in June and holds a session for 140 days. Census is taken every ten years. The entire talk was most educational and a question and - answer period was held with many informative answers given.

Senator Armbrister is very interested and well - informed about our SPJST procedures. His wife is a member of the Shumbera family of La Salle who are SPJST members of La Salle lodge.

We are happy to report that Johnny and Becky Richardson are now the new youth leaders of our lodge and we feel that our Lodge No. 32 youth will prosper under their guidance.

We are glad to report that Katherine Wokaty is home from the hospital and feeling lots better. After being home from the hospital for a few days, Frank Rokyta had to re - enter the hospital again. We hope that he will soon feel much better; we also miss him at our meetings.

Our next meeting will be held on October 7 at Citizens National Bank Meeting Room at 7:30 p.m. We will have an interesting speaker again.

33, Bleiblerville Annual Fish Fry

Lodge

The annual Fall Fish Fry will be held Sunday, October 18, 1987 at the Bleiblerville SPJST Hall located on FM Road 2502.

There will be fried fish sold to go at 9 a.m. for the noon meal, serving will begin at 11:30 a.m. The meal will consist of fish, bread, catsup, potato chips, and slaw; all you want to eat for the price of $5.50 for adults, $2.75 for children ages 6 through 12. Cakes, pies, and kolache will also be available.

We tnembers of Lodge No. 33 wish to ask for a cake, pie or kolache to be donated, the variety of pastry will be sold with the meal or earlier. The donation of cakes, pies, and kolache will help to keep up the expenses in our lodge hall.

35, Elk September Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: On September 13, Lodge No. 35 meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jana Breitkreutz and Jesika Tierce.

Then the president asked us to stand in a moment of silence for our departed Brother Rudolph Zalman and for Sister Henrietta Pavelka. Our sympathies to both families.

Paula Williams was our only visitor.

Come back again!

Secretary Rosemary Banik read the minutes of the August meeting. She also made the treasurer's report.

Youth Leader Louise Burney told about the Youth Club having a cake walk during the September 26 dance; also a Halloween party on October 18th. The Youth Club gave Dawn Pavelka a graduation present.

Then we sang "Happy Birthday" to Randy Pavelka and Rosemary Banik. "Happy Birthday" to both of you!

On the sick list is Marie Reichardt; she had hip surgery and Charles Pavelka had surgery. Both of them are in Hillcrest Hospital. Vernon Dulock is slowly getting better and Ernest Clemons was back at the Lodge 35 meeting; it was good to see you, Ernest!

Door prizes were won by Timmy Pavelka (youth) and Albert Banik (adult). After the meeting we had a delicious fried chicken dinner. Our next meeting will be October 11 at 3 p.m. I hope to see you all there.

The Tarok players of Lodge No. 66, Waco think they are the best in the SPJST; if you think your lodge is better, call me to set up a tournament.

The Tarok trophy will be on the line and go home with the winning lodge.

The minimum players for the tournament is eight but we play with more if both lodges have more players.

The cost is $5 per person and the price of your lunch. The $5 goes back to the players in the form of prizes and helps defray some expenses.

August Meeting Of Lodge 66 Before I begin, I want to thank Bonnie Pruitt for being so considerate and sending me the notes of our meeting. I was unable to be present due to State YAD in Temple.

The August meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m. Ashley Locke led everyone in the pledge and lodge motto.

Members were asked to remain standing for a moment of silent prayer for our departed member Henry Narovec.

Brother Tommy Forbes called the roll of officers. All were present except Youth Leader Gladys Yates and Reporter Dorothy Warren. There was one visitor present, Brother Jerry Mikulas of the Supreme Lodge.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Correspondence read informed us that members Kay Maynard and Kevin Stuckly had been awarded $500 college scholarships from the Supreme Lodge.

Sister Langlotz gave the report of the board meeting. She thanked Jeanette Smith for taking the minutes in her absence.

The Entertainment Committee report was given by Sister Leona Nors.

The lodge will furnish chicken and salad for the September meeting.

Members are asked to bring a vegetable or dessert. The meal will be served at 1:30 p.m. Members of the youth club will give a program.

Sister Gloria Locke gave the Cheer Committee report. Get well cards were sent to Georgia Pavlicek and Chris Pavlicek. A sympathy card was sent to Ruby and Ray Orsag. Sister Georgia Kofnovec's sister had also passed away.

Sister Libbie Parma gave the Trust Fund report. She was presented with a $50 check.

Books had been audited, and Johnnie Gaidusek reported everything was in order.

New members accepted in our lodge were Davis Wayne Pruitt and Terry Towery.

Sister Darlene Engelke sent in a memorial from our lodge to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of Henry Narovec. She then read a resolution of condolence for Brother Narovec.

Sister Pruitt reported the committee to appoint a fraternalist had voted not to recommend a candidate.

Brother Jerry Mikulas gave a very informative talk on direct billing and answered several questions from the members.

Our door prize winner was Brother Johnnie Gaidusek.

Members having birthdays in August were Gloria Locke, Johnnie Gaidusek, Tommy Forbes, Elenor Volcik and Frank Miller. The birthday cake was brought by Justin Engelke.

The meeting adjourned at 3:45 p.m.

1987 Potpourri - Lodge 88, Houston Lodge No. 88 has been most generous this year in helping those in need.

Our Board of Trustees, so far this year, has approved contributions exceeding $5,000 for some very worthy causes, the largest being $2,250 for the

Czech Educational Foundation of Texas; $500 for the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II at Needville, Texas; $425 for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo; $100 for the needy children at Casa and contributions to other worthy causes such as the Memorial Fund, the March of Dimes, the Shriners Hospital for crippled children, the Good Samaritan Auxiliary and many others.

Our thanks to the Board of Trustees from all members -- We applaud you!

Our used - eye - glasses project has been most successful during its first year ending August 1987. We all at Lodge No. 88 know these glasses are donated to the Lighthouse of Houston to help the indigent in the local area.

More than 380 pairs have been donated by Lodge 88 members and the Greater Houston Legal Secretaries' Association by Sister Carolyn Sager, our own lodge recording secretary, who is a member of the secretaries' association. For those mathematicians wanting a quick "fix" on averages it seems that 31.666666 pairs per month or 1.0410958 pairs per day is a pretty good "round" figure average - wise.

Oops!! I certainly hope that my small pocket calculator didn't go haywire with these "big figures." Let's go to other things now since my mind becomes boggled with such enormous calculations. Thanks to those who were able to give.

Now to bend your ear a bit longer, it's great to see such a magnanimous listing of members' names who have contributed clothing, shoes, magazines, library books, toys and cash for the youngsters at the Covenant House/Houston and Casa de Esperanza. 139, Danbury Report

The September meeting of Danbury Lodge 139 got underway with President Vincent Hechler calling the meeting to order.

The lodge did not meet in August so Secretary Tommie Lostak read the minutes of the July meeting. President Hechler and his wife, Catherine, were on vacation in Nebraska at the time; also, this reporter and her daughter, Mary Anne Smith, were on a tour of Peru, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands.

Financial Secretary Helen Filipp gave her report. She announced that one of our lodge members, Leona Zwahr, was in a Rosenberg hospital following a traffic accident. The entire lodge joins in wishing her a speedy recovery.

After Treasurer Lonnie Lostak gave his report, he announced that Jarad Vrazel, the first recipient of the Lodge 139 SPJST Scholarship, is attending the University of Texas and is working in an Austin bank. A note of thanks from Jarad was read to the members.

After business was completed, the meeting adjourned for a social which was enjoyed by all.

Dear Members and Friends: It is with great sadness I write this article, but I know Benny would want me to continue as I have in the past.

Our meeting Sunday was called to order by our president, Brother Jerry Milan. He led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag; he asked the members to remain standing to honor our deceased members, Brothers Larry Schramm, Julius Huzarevich and Benny Pavey.

Our sympathy is extended to their families, and may they rest in peace.

Brother Milan welcomed Sister Mary Kathryn Garrison from Creve Couer, Illinois. She drove her mother, Sister Mary Hale, home after spending several weeks there and to Micky Ban from St. Louis, Missouri.

All officers were present. All the reports were approved as read.

Thank you notes were read from Sister Anna Johnson, Sister Mary Pavey and Justine Valek for the Pavlicek family.

Brother Milan announced we would be hosting the District III meeting October 25th. More details later. He also announced a card of thanks will be sent to the SVPS Fire Insurance Chapter 9 for their generous donations.

Sister Renfro announced new members, Kathryn J. Brown, James R. Brown, Jr. and Vona Louise Shaw.

Sister Pavey reported on all the get well, sympathy and birthday cards sent .

Brother Kovar reported on the Czech Day at the State Fair October 18, and that Czech classes start today (15th) at Lodge 92 at 7 p.m.

Some of our lodge members, along with Sokols from several units, performed along with'. Czech Dancers at the Cowboy Game Half - time Saturday, September 5th. Brother Rome Milan reported the Czech Culture was well - presented.

We extend our congratulations to Sister Melissa Ann Johnson, the daughter of Brother Carl Johnson and Sister Linda Johnson, was chosen as Young Tex Anne for the August Optimist Club. She had a grade point average of 91 and was ranked 40th out of 276 in her class.

She was a member of the National Honor Society for 3 years and was selected to Who's Who Among American High School Students. She was varsity baseball's statistician and manager her junior and senior years and a faithful fan of other Azle High School athletics. She was a member of the Junior Engineering Technical Society her freshman year and also a member of the Future Business Leaders of America. She has worked as a selling specialist at J.C. Penny, an office assistant at her father's business, Johnson Precision Mfg. Co. and is presently a lifeguard at Ridglea Pool Association. She plans to attend college and major in business accounting. We are very proud of you, Melissa, and Sister Billie Jo Mason who will be leaving for New York City Friday to accept the highest Fashion Award for the Apparel Mart in Dallas for the Jessica McClintock Designer Clothes and Sister Vicki Steinman who headed a team of 31 for the United Way at Houston General Insurance and won first place. She received free dinner tickets and Ranger game tickets for her team.

Brother Mark Mamula has had surgery again on his fingers on both hands from his bicycle accident. We wish you a speedy recovery and you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Names for the member of the year have been turned in.

Our youth leader was working Sunday and she called during the meeting and said the Youth Club would meet next Sunday and then go to Putt-Putt.

Lodge 177, Academy Approved Donations The September 9th meeting of Academy Lodge No. 177 was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Otis Beck. The pledge was recited and a moment of silence was observed in memory of Frankie Hutka and Adell Tyroch.

The minutes were read by Dorothy Lisenbe and they were approved as read. Thank you cards were received from James Tomastik, the Barbara Brown family, Adell Tyroch family and from Scott & White Cancer Research for the donation made in Barbara Brown's name.

We had 6 new members and I failed to get their names. I'll try to report them in my October letter.

All chairpersons' reports were good.

Libbie Bartek reported that she sent a get well card to Vernie May and sympathy cards to the families of Barbara Brown, Adell Tyroch, Frankie Hutka, Ray Peterek and also a spray to Frankie Hutka's and Adell Tyroch's services.

Board of Trustees' Report -- They decided to fix the air - conditioning rather than replacing all units, granted the use of the hall to the Cen Tex Square Dance Club on April 29, 1988 and November 14 to Larry Bartek and discussed fixing the parking lot, seems this is an ongoing problem.

A motion was made and seconded to donate $250 to the Little River Fire Department and $100 to the Department of Public Safety Officers' Association.

Also a motion made and seconded to give Youth Leader Ann Tomastik $50 to purchase items for the Fun Carnival to be held in Round Rock September 20th.

A discussion was held on changing our Rules and Regulations on the election of officers, those changes being to hold our elections at the November meeting, install the new officers and they, in turn, would have time to hold the Trustees' meeting in plenty of time to elect the chairpersons before taking office in January. If anyone has any input or output about these changes, feel free to come to the October 14 meeting and air your views.

Members, also be reminded if you are planning on seeking a position in this lodge you must have attended 7 meetings in the last year and the maintenance of the hall falls on the shoulders of the president and vice president. This lodge needs to be checked on and equipment maintained. The last 2 years, the president and vice president have kept a close watch on the lodge; so, if you are planning on running for either of these positions, be assured it will be more than name only and making the meetings!

Birthday Club Of Lodge 88 The Birthday Club Sisters met for their regular monthly meeting on September 9, 1987 with a fair attendance.

President Rita Alexander opened the meeting with Rosalee Kostem reading the minutes of our previous meeting and were approved as read. Secretary Rosalee also read a thank you note from Mary Schenburn who had been stung by a wasp, which put her to bed for a while.

Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut gave a report on all the cards she sent.

We were glad that her husband Johnnie, is doing so well after serious heart surgery.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the financial report.

Our known sick are Emily Bily, who has been very ill for several years, and we still miss her; she was a devout member and always ready to do her part in everything. Others who are on our sick list are Louise Chudej, who never missed a meeting and Minnie Bravenec, who is in a rest home. Our Sister Emma Jarisch surprised us all; she moved to Tomball, 30 miles away, and she attended our meeting; that's a real member of our club.

Marie Pokluda lost a brother - in law and Margaret Bohac lost a brother - in - law and a nephew. You have our sympathy.

Mary Schenburn announced tliat her daughter, Susan Murray, a nurse, got 3 promotions and also selected to play as a nurse in the operating room in a play by Dr. Red Duke played by Dennis Weaver.

On July 30, a group from Lodge 88 decided to go to Las Vegas to get rich.

It doesn't work that way for some of us. Those who went were Royal and Laura Bell Warnasch, Joe and Della Miksch, Tim and Rosalee Kostom, Steve and Estelle Kelly, Pearl Hanka, Arnold Cmajdalka, Mary and Rosie Roznovsky, and Norman Miksch. We had a lot of fun, even if it was very hot.

Alice Bily and her husband, Miroslav, have just returned from a 1 O - day trip to Alaska. It must have been a fabulous trip. Then, a few days later, they decided to visit their son, Robert and family in Atlanta, Georgia. "Gad Abouts!"

Last Friday, September 11, Frances Olexa and I went to see Grandma Hanka at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville. I was amazed how wen she looks, but that proves that our S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home is a good place - to be when you need special care.

Frances and I had lunch with her, and it was a delicious meal. Grandma was so happy to see us and really practiced the Czech language with Frances. Also Brother Dobesh is there and he joined us and loves to talk Czech.

Vice President Edna Froehlich announced the following cooks for October: Chairman Bessie Lero, Martha Sacco and Martha Baxter.

We are so glad to report that our dear Sister Lillian Finn attended our meeting and is doing quite well.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Tilly Bily, Pearl Hanka, Susan Murray and Birdie Pech.

We adjourned at 12:00 noon.

Friendship Club Of Ft. Worth Report Dear Members and Friends: Since my last report, Roy and I have attended the Play - Mor Czech Days in Lincoln, Nebraska, visited our son, Tony, his wife, Kathy and three grandsons in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, plus seeing other relatives and many friends.

We also attended the Women's Auxiliary Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) Convention in Chicago, Illinois and also the Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association Convention in Rosenberg, Texas.

The September 4th meeting was attended by 32 members.

The birthday members for September were Pauline Walker, Mary Pavey, Annie Belota, Ted Bugaj and Josephine Bugaj.

Member Marie Prill had eye surgery and Homer Johnson was reported on the sick list. We wish these members a full recovery with no additional complications.

We express our sincere sympathy to Mary Pavey on the loss of her husband, Benny, who passed away on September 3rd. Those of us who were with him the day before he passed away know that he had a beautiful day, because he played his favorite game of dominoes for several hours.

We shall miss Benny at many of our club activities.

We also express our sympathy to Irene Green on the loss of her nephew, Zypryan Strittmatter, who passed away on August 30, 1987.

Our congratulations to Andy and Ann Sustala who will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on September 26th at Sokol Hall in Ft. Worth with a reception, dinner and dance. We wish this couple many more years of togetherness.

The door prize was donated by Frank Tesar. The lucky winner of the $5 door prize was Annie Belota.

The hostesses for the October 7th meeting are Genevieve Earle, Jo Prochaska and Lydia Alholm. It will be a hot covered dish luncheon.

Reunion Held At Circleville The Kovar - Volcik - Prcin reunion was held at Circleville VFW Hall on August 16, 1987. A covered dish was served to approximately 86 guests attending from San Angelo, Temple, Belton, West and many surrounding towns. Leslie Loessin led the noon meal grace.

A short business meeting was held and it was voted the 1988 reunion to be held on October 2, 1988 at the same

location.

Officers for 1988 are President Erna Kovar, Vice President Leslie Loessin, Secretary Marie Ann Ripple, Treasurer Ruby Loessin and Evelyn Leshikar, reporter.

The afternoon was spent visiting and listening to accordian music by Hudson Leshikar.

The children enjoyed the fish pond and bidding on homemade and home canned goods was enjoyed by all.

The family traveling the longest distance was Edwin and Viola Krupala of San Angelo; the shortest distance, again, went to Leslie Ruby and Terry Loessin; and the oldest one present was 76 - year - old Hermina Wentrcek and youngest one was 2 - week - old Kevin Lee Kovar, son of Brian and Pam Kovar of Taylor.

This year was the first for the Prcin family reunion and there was a great showing of families.

47th American Czechoslovak Day At The State Fair Of Texas The 47th American - Czechoslovak . Day at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas will take place on Sunday, October 18, 1987. Activities will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will take place at the Band Shell Auditorium and various locations on the fairgrounds throughout the day. By John See, Ill ln 1918, a new nation arose in an important old land in the mountainous heart of Europe. As far back as 1500 the rugged upland of Bohemia had been an important center. For four centuries it was under Austrian rule; and even before . the .end of the first World War the Allies gave the land to a new nation named Czechoslovakia.

It came into being on October 28, 1918 following the fall of the Austro Hungarian Empire.

The name Czechoslovakia means "land of the Czechs and Slovaks."

The Slovaks lived in the eastern part of the country (Slovakia). The Czechs lived in the center known as Moravia and the west called Bohemia. Both people . were Slavs and the main religion is Roman Catholic. The official name of the country is Ceskoslovenska Republika, or Republic of Czechoslovakia.

The Czechs are the most westerly branch of the Slavs. By the 14th Century, they had gained Western culture and won a high place in Europe. After a long and bitter struggle they fell to the Austrians in 1626. After this the German influence made them industrial people more advanced in culture than the Slovaks.

They have a long roll of famous individuals including some like John Huss, a religious leader who was burned at the stake for his religious beliefs. The Unity of the Brethren Church was later formed in this country as a result of his teachings.

Others included Antonin Dvorak and Friedrich Smetana who were composers; Jan Kubelik, a violinist; Johann Comenius, an educational reformer; and Karel Cepek, a writer.

Although Czechoslovakia is located in the interior, it still has the Elbe and the Ode Rivers which flow to the north. The Moravia River runs south to the Danube, along the boundary next to Hungary and Austria. These rivers and railroads help move people and products to all parts of the continent. Its borders touch those of Germany, Poland, Russia, Hungary and Austria. A long narrow country, it is made up of three natural regions -­ Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia.

Bohemia was the largest province of Czechoslovakia until all provinces were abolished in 1949. It is bounded on the west, north and east by wooded mountains and its high, level plains and river valleys are very good for

Mountains in Bohemia contain rich mineral deposits. Some of the largest firms manufacture Bohemian glass, chemicals, china, furniture, cotton and woolen materials, iron, steel and paper. Bohemia has many breweries and distilleries.

Moravia covers an area of more than 8500 square miles and its lands are fertile and lie in the middle of the country. It slopes from the mountains in the north and west to the valley of the Moravia River in the south. This small part of Czechoslovakia near Ostrava, drained by the Oder River, is considered part of Upper Silesia. The low area is called the Moravia Gate. A large portion of the land in Moravia is hilly. The chief crops are rye, oats, barley, wheat, corn flax and suger beets. Leather goods, yarn, silk, wine and machinery made in Moravia are well - known in many parts of the world. Woolen goods and sugar are the main exports of Moravia.

Slovakia is the eastern part of the country. It has the highest mountains.

One of these are the High Tatras, which are 8,000 feet tall. A lot of the land slopes from the Carpathian Mountains in the north to the prairie land. It has deposits of coal, lead zinc, mercury, silver and gold. Other mineral resources include uranium, clay and sand used in making glass.

The entire country of Czechoslovakia is about the size of New York, covering an area of 49,373 square miles. The climate in Czechoslovakia is continental, a lot like that in southern Canada with hot winters. summers and cold Temperatures average 20 degree F. in January and 70 degree F. in July. The country has about 20 to 40 inches of rain each year.

Some of the rivers that help drain the land include the Labe (Elbe) and the Vltava (Moldau) Rivers flow northwest through Germany to the North Sea. This helps drain the land in Bohemia. The rest of the country is drained by the Danube River and its branches the Moravia, Vah, Nitra and Hron. The Danube flows south and east to the Black Sea. Even though there are no large lakes in Czechoslovakia, there are many small lakes high in mountain valleys used for fishing and sports.

Wooded mountains cover a third of the land. Cultivation of the lower slopes and valleys makes the nation almost self - sufficient in food. Some of the farm products raised here are potatoes, sugar beets, wheat, rye, barley, oats, hops, and fruit. In the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) in Bohemia and Silesian basin in the Oder Valley in Moravia, coal and lignite are the main ores mined. Some other ores mined in Bohemia are iron, graphite, garnets and silver. Copper, lead and rock salt are mined in Slovakia.

The capitol and largest city in Prague (Praha). It is an old city on the Vltava (Moldau) River. My great grandmother Frances Quitta, who is 96, was born in Prague in 1891 and still lives in Bryan, Texas. She came to the United States at the age of 3.

Bratislava is the leading commercial city because of its river port. The cities of Brno and Plzen are the major manufacturing centers.

Before preparing this report, I did not realize that Czechoslovakia was not in existence until 1918. Its people have a long history of hard work and dedication. It is a country of varied regions and opportunities for different ways of life.

Cottonwood Lodge 6 Youth Club Meeting The Youth Club meeting was held September 13 at 2:30 p.m. with a good attendance.

The youth took cakes to the West Rest Haven. Then, every Friday night, all of us made sausage, kolache and strudels for Westfest. We did pretty good at West fest. Lodge 6 Youth Club float won third place; we all are very proud to be a winner; also Keith Hykel and Kevin Dobecka were proud to carry a banner for the State King and Queen.

I want to thank each of you for helping us bake kolache and strudels, also for the items that were donated to us which was very helpful. Thank you very much!

Our Youth Club had Lanette Hykel going to State YAD as queen, Tammi Dobecka as her duchess and Kevin Dobecka with craft in Hobby Kits, Tammi Dobecka as "Junior of the Year," who won "State Junior of the Year," Kevin Dobecka was selected among the State's Top 10 noir': winners; also Lanette Hykel and Keith entered in the decorating cake contest.

Congratulations to all the winners and good luck was wished to them at State YAD. Youth Club members with thei parents had a picnic at Lake Whitney on August 30th. They grilled hamburgers, had chips, sweets and refreshments. Everyone had a good time swimming and boat riding.

We donated paper to St. Mary's and clothes to the Salvation Army.

The youth clubbers will be working on Halloween things and will start on Christmas projects; we have Christmas card samples and other items. We also have a booklet on knives and a few new items which will make nice Christmas gifts.

On September 3rd the club members decorated a float for Westfest Parade and I want to thank Roney and Karen Kroll for getting the pickup and trailer for our float. Thank you very much!

There were no birthday celebrants in September. Bradley Kroll brought the cake and Susan Hrabal will bring the cake for October. Our next , meeting will be October 4th at 2:30 p.m.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club Dear Readers, The monthly meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was held September 8, 1987 beginning at 7:30 p.m.

President Janet Macek called the meeting to order. Jeffrey Posvar and Adam Bruggman led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. In attendance, we had 10 members and 2 guests, Mrs. Jane and Chad Bruggman, present.

Our Youth Leader Rose Harvell reported about our November 8 turkey and dressing meal. We will receive tickets to sell at our next meeting. We will also get information about a Halloween party.

Tracey Chervenka was presented a gift for selling the most tickets for the half of beef given away in July. The beef was won by Melanie Zavodny.

Dear Members, Taiton SPJST Youth Club No. 30 met Sunday, September 6, with ten members and seven adults present.

Marcy Dorotik conducted the meeting. Michael Kaspar led the pledge and Stephanie Roye led the opening prayer.

Winners of the District and State Youth Achievement Days were congratulated.

The lodge will sponsor a cake walk at the Taiton Fall Festival on October 4th. Other upcoming events include Fraternal Congress in Austin on October 17 and 18, District VI meeting at Hillje SPJST Hall on October 25, next club meeting at 10 a.m. on October 10 in Taiton Community Center.

Poems were read by Stephanie Roye, Craig Dorotik, Lenice Kaspar, Craig Dornak, Jeanine Dorotik, Valerie Roye, and Marcy Dorotik.

Craig Dornak and Curtis Dorotik were wished "Happy Birthday."

Dear Vestnik Readers, On September 10, 1987 the Lodge 88 Youth Club held their monthly meeting and bake sale.

The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. by President Crystal Wallace.

Darlene Migl led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The September social will be at Tradewinds on September 26 at 1:45 p.m. when we will hold a short meeting until 2 p.m.; we will leave around 5 p.m.

In October, we are going to have a Halloween dance including a costume contest. In November, the social was decided on Fame City. More on the October and November socials will be announced at the next meeting on October 8 at 7 p.m.

Birthdays in September were Jason Michalak and Cindy Groendes.

Scrapbook Committee Chairman Marlene Migl announced that we needed pictures that anyone could donate, and she also said that committee pictures would be taken for the scrapbook at the October meeting.

During Bingo, we also held a bake sale on which we made $51.75.

District V Family Day was set for September 20 with a meal being served at noon. District V Youth Club planned to auction off items and Lodge 88 Youth Club were to clean tables.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 17, New Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother WESLEY M. CLEPPER, who passed away Tuesday, July 21, 1987 in St. Jude's Hospital in Brenham.

He was born December 15, 1912 in Burleson County, to the late William Morris Clepper and Lela Neva Krueger. He was raised in Burleson County and moved to Galveston County in 1949. He worked for the Texas Highway Department in Texas City. He retired in 1975 and returned to Caldwell in 1978.

He was married to Velma Whisenant on August 13, 1933 in Lovelady, Texas. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Caldwell, Masonic Warren Lodge No. 56, AM FM Eastern Star No. 976, Scottish Rite 'and SPJST Lodge 17 No. 17.

Survivors include his wife, Velma Clepper of Caldwell; one son, Wesley Clepper of Seguin; two daughters, Carolyn Fraizer of Killeen and Beverly Smith 8 Ann of Angleton; grandchildren 2 great and grandchildren; also 2 brothers, 2 sisters and a half - brother. Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

Funeral services for Brother Clepper were held Thursday, July 23rd at 2 p.m. in the Phillips - Luckey Chapel with the Rev. Phil Lovelace, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating.

Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery.

Serving as honorary pallbearers and graveside Masonic rites were members of Caldwell Masonic Warren Lodge No. 56 AF AM. May our departed brother rest in eternal peace.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 17, New Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister MARY EMMA NABELEK, who passed away Wednesday, July 29, 1987 in the Sweetbriar Nursing Home in Brenham where she had been a resident for 3 years.

Mary Nabelek was born on February 1, 1911 in Burleson County in the Birch area to the late Gustavus and Mary Benn Schultz. A resident of Burleson County all her life, she was a member of the United Church of Christ in Lyons. She was married to Anton John Nabelek on November 29, 1934 at Birch. He preceded her in death on October 25, 1977.

She is survived by a sister - in - law, Emma Schultz of Needville and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mary Nabelek, age 76, were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 1st in Phillips - Luckey Chapel with the Rev. Charles Stark, pastor of the United Church of Christ in Lyons, officiating. Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Willie Schmidt, Herbert Neimann, Raymond Cedidla, Milton Koehler, Edmond Cedidla and Ernest Knesek.

Expression Of Sympathy On behalf of the members of Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor, we wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother HARRY BOWERS, SR. Harry Bowers, Sr. died Saturday, August 1, 1987, in the Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. He was born April 22, 1923 in Caldwell, Texas to the late Robert Hays and Jessie Harvey Bowers. He and Earlyne Rankin were married October 23, 1942 in Houston, Texas.

Mr. Bowers was a lifelong resident of Caldwell, Texas. He was the owner of the Harry H. Bowers Insurance Agency for over 40 years. He served as the Burleson County Veterans' Service officer for 19 years.

Mr. Bowers was also a member of the Caldwell Methodist Church, the Caldwell Evening Lions Club, the Caldwell VFW Post 4458, the American Legion Post, the Masonic Warren Lodge No. 56, and the Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department.

He also was a 32nd degree Mason in the Scottish Rite Bodies of Austin and a member of the Ben Hur Temple of Austin.

Mr. Bowers served as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army in World War II from 1942 to 1946 and, again, in the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by his wife, Earlyne Bowers of Caldwell; one son, Harry H. Bowers, Jr. of Caldwell; one daughter, Nita Beavers of Caldwell; 4 grandchildren; a daughter - in - law, Jackie Bowers; a son - in - law, Doug Beavers. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Robert (Bobby) Bowers.

Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Seaton Star No. 47, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister FRANCES PAVLICA, who passed away Sunday, August 9, 1987 in a Temple nursing home. She was 83 years old.

Sister Pavlica was born in Williamson County on May 3, 1904.

The family moved to Bell County in 1906 and lived in the Temple and Ratibor area where they farmed. She married George Pavlica on November 8, 1920. She was a housewife and was very well known for her beautiful quilts. She was a member of the Seaton Brethren Church and Lodge 47. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1966.

Survivors include three sons, George Pavlica, Johnnie Pavlica and Raymond Pavlica, all of Temple; four daughters, Georgia Sodek of Temple, Martha Palla of Temple, Dorothy Jones of Picayune, Mississippi and Irene Beran of Temple; one sister, Mary Kohutek of Temple; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

Tuesday, August 11 in the Harper Talasek Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eugene Kotrla officiating.

Burial was in the Seaton Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Douglas Sodek, Charles Sodek, Eugene Palla, Marvin Palla, Gary Pavlica and Randy Pavlica. Honorary pallbearers were Russell Schneider and Larry Poulter.

Sister Pavlica will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Sister Holt worked as a licensed vocational nurse with the Rugeley Blasingame Clinic, Gulf Coast Medical Center and also worked as a private duty nurse. She was a former member of the Texas Nurses' Association.

Her husband, Ernest Holt, preceded her in death in October, 1976.

Sbrusch, Jr. [Age 77 years] Funeral services for Charlie Walter Sbrusch, Jr. of Beasley, Texas were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 14, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Beasley with Rev. Henry C. Rachunek officiating. Interment was in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg, Texas.

Brother Sbrusch passed away Wednesday, August 12, 1987 at his home in Beasley. He was the former owner of Sbrusch Dirt and Gravel for over 50 years. He was preceded in death by his mother in June, 1958 and his father in March, 1978. He was a native of Engle (Fayette County), Texas, and moved to Fort Bend County in 1918. He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Beasley and was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 28. He was a past director of the Farmer's Gin in Beasley and was one of the founding fathers of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Parish in Beasley.

Survivors include his wife, Lillie Sbrusch of Beasley; three daughters, Delores Sbrusch of Beasley, Bernice Steinocher of Rosenberg, Ardis Bacak of El Campo; one sister, Lillie Kainer of East Bernard; three brothers, Willie Sbrusch of Beasley, Frank Sbrusch of Aransas Pass, Bennie Sbrusch of Rosenberg; two grandchildren, Brad Bacak and Jeff Steinocher.

Thursday, August 13 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Beasley, where services were offered at 8 p.m. August 13th.

Sister Lesikar, was born in the Doubleheader community in Bell County, Texas. She married Rudolph Lesikar December, 1920. They farmed in Bell County. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977, an infant daughter and four sisters and two brothers.

He was born in Fort Worth and attended the University of Texas at Austin where he graduated with honors in 1947. He was in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was lead navigator in the 8th Bomber Squadron and received a Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a petroleum engineer for Standard Oil Company and Atlantic Richfield Oil Company in Kuwait until he retired in the early 1970s.

He was a member of the Texas Exes for more than 40 years and a member of SPJST Lodge 154 since 1964.

Survivors include one brother and sister - in - law, Walter and Pat Henry Huzarevich; sister - in - law, Stella Huzarevich; nieces and nephews, Walter Huzarevich, Thomas Huzarevich, Julianne Huzarevich, all of Ft. Worth and Pattianne Nolan of Covena, California.

Sister Rosie Zabodyn died in the Sunbelt Regional Hospital, August 19, 1987 just 9 days short of her 85th birthday. She was born on August 28, 1902 to John and Mary (Grigar) Svec at West Point, Texas.

Sister Rosie just received her SPJST 50 - year membership in this year. She and her late husband, Frank, were both members of our Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28. In the community of Cloverleaf, where Sister Rosie lived these last 28 years, she was a member of the Gold Star Mothers of VFW Post No. 10462.

Frank Zabodyn and Rosie Svec were married in 1918 and to this union 17 children were born. Three of this number died at birth or shortly thereafter, 14 lived to reach adulthood. Her husband, Frank, passed away in 1955; also 3 sons preceded her in death.

Survivors include 3 sons, Stanley Zabodyn, Rudy Zabodyn, both of Houston, Charles Zabodyn of El Campo; 8 daughters, Martha Bohac of El Campo, Mildred Srubar of Katy, Helen Lewis, Mary Konvicka, Eva E. York, Delores Denman, Bernice Malowski, Sophie Thompson, all of Houston; 51 grandchildren, 64 great grandchildren, 12 great - great grandchildren, 1 great - great - great grandchild; 4 sisters; 7 brothers plus numerous nieces and nephews.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. August 21st in the San Jacinto Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Robert D. Carlson officiating.

Services were held at 10 a.m.

Saturday, August 22nd also in the San Jacinto Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert D. Carlson officiating.

Interment was at 1 p.m. Saturday.

August 22nd, in the Czech National Cemetery in East Bernard with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating at the graveside services. Also, at the graveside, eulogy was given by Brother Joe Nezval, president of Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28.

Services for Mr. Hinkle were held Tuesday, August 25, at 11 a.m. in Memorial Baptist Church with Reverend Eugene Hoover officiating.

Burial was in Bellwood Memorial Park, with Masonic rites. Sheffield Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Melnar who died August 6, 1969.

Lou Ann Marek was the narrator in church for her grandmother's services.
