West's Westfest for 1987 is history now and plans for Westfest, 1988 are already being discussed in ways to improve it for the future. Although Westfest has no direct connection to our SP JST Society, yet. the theme of Czech heritage, culture and language of Westfest does coincide directly with one part of the preamble to our SP JST Constitution and Bylaws, i.e., the preservation of our Czech heritage, culture and language.

As a coincidence, our 1987 - 88 SP JST State King Michael Morris and Queen Melissa Victorick rode in the Saturday's Westfest Parade; Lodge 6 member, Victoria (Torie) Grmela (also a Czech Folk Dancer of West) was selected 1987 "Miss Westfest;" the Czech Folk Dancers of West Float won first place (many are members of Lodges 6, 35, 54 and 66); West Gymnastic Sokol Float received second place (also many are members); Cottonwood Lodge 6 Youth Club (with their District Ill Royalty, Queen Lanette Hykel and Duchess Tammi Dobecka) placed third in the parade; therefore, we can see that our SPJST was well - represented, plus other members who took part in the parade, namely, Elk Lodge 35 Youth Club; Sister Christine Hruska (Lodge 54) was privileged to serve as Westfest Parade Marshal; Mayor William Pareya with his wife, Betty Pareya (Lodge 54); former longtime SP JST Vestnik Publisher and former West Mayor Joe Holasek (Lodge 36); Brother James Pavlicek (Lodge 66) chauffeured Texas State Representative Betty Denton.

There were also several SPJST members dressed in authentic costumes consisting of Joe Janecka (Lodge 180) with his wife, Alice; Willa Mae Cervenka (Lodge 54) with her sister, Henrietta Cervenka; Torie Grmela (Lodge 6), Dorothy Warren (Lodge 66), plus several other ladies and the 3 generations of the Karol Vaculik family who helped make the Parade of Costumes a beautiful attraction.

Vestnik Editor. along with 'his wife, Maxine, were in charge of the program at the Cultural Section where the SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Beseda Dancers and also visiting Sokol Corpus Christi gymnasts performed in conjunction with the Sokol West gymnasts for the very large and receptive audience. The editor regrets that, at that time, he had to be absent to broadcast the 15 - year - old American. - Czech Hour, KHBR - 1560 AM, Hillsboro in conjunction with Brother David Kolar (Lodge 54) at 1 :30 p.m. Our thanks to Alden Blanar Smith (Lodge 130) who filled in for the 2 - hour portion of Sunday's program.

All in all, it was worth the long hours and Mother Nature was cooperative and held the temperature down and postponed the rain until Labor Day (Monday morning)! On behalf of Westfest, we express our appreciation to all the people who came by to say "Hi" and regret we could not spend more time visiting, however, duty calls continually!

From the first Westfest held in 1976 and organized to preserve the Czech Moravian heritage of the community and to raise funds for community projects, funding from Westfest enabled the city to purchase land and construct a ballpark and a new community center in past years, plus improving the Westfest facilities, etc.

Westfest has also donated money to clubs and organizations; namely, Sokol West, Czech Folk Dancers of West, West High School Band, Boys and Girls Scout Programs, West Summer Baseball Program, West Library Association, West Ambulance Association, West fest Scholarship Program, Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT), and many other projects.

Thirty to forty thousand people attend this 2 - day event each year.

Most attendees come from within a 150 - mile radius, with Houston 150 miles south of West and Dallas/Fort Worth 85 miles north.

*** Be careful how often you use nasal sprays and nose drops, warns the American Academy of Otolaryngology -- Head and Neck Surgery. They can provide welcome relief for a stuffy nose, but if you use such products regularly for more than 5 to 7 days, you could literally become addicted.

Even infants can develop a dependence. This is why the academy recommends that nasal sprays and nose drops be used only on a short term basis and in emergencies. Heed the cautionary label that many of the sprays and drops carry: '' Do not use this product for more than 3 days."

The warning sign that dependence has developed is a congested nose that doesn't clear up after 3 to 4 days of use of drops or sprays, even when combined with an over - the - counter antihistamine and decongestant preparation taken orally. At this point, it's time to see a doctor.

*** "Buyer beware" is sound advice, whether you are shopping for central air conditioning, planning a funeral or looking for a worthwhile charity. To help consumers protect themselves, the Better Business Bureau publishes scores of booklets on topics ranging from appliances to work - at - home schemes. Some of these publications my not seem very interesting to sophisticated shoppers, but others -­ young people, for example -- may find them helpful. For a complete list at no charge, send a self - addressed, business - size, stamped envelope to: "Booklets on Wise Buying," Council of Better Business Bureaus, 1515 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, Virginia 22209.

Help is now available for elderly people who have eye problems but cannot afford a doctor. Some 7 ,000 ophthalmologists have agreed to treat the eye disorders of any disadvantaged person age 65 or older at no charge.

The doctors will waive the deductible that medicare patients must normally pay. For patients who do not belong to medicare, the doctors will forgo their fee entirely.

The costs of hospitalization, glasses and prescription drugs are not covered. But patients will be referred to local social service agencies that may be able to help. For details, call the American Academy of Ophthalmology toll - free at (800) 222 - EYES.

There were 20 sales representatives in attendance at these workshops. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those who are not active to come join us.

It is the duty of the lodge and its members to support the sales representatives of your lodge and help them secure new members in order to keep your lodge alive and growing.

Please urge the sales representatives of your lodge to attend the insurance seminars so that they can better serve your membership.

Sister Martha Broz was appointed the new Postmaster at Lowake effective Saturday, August 29, 1987, Sectional Center Manager/Postmaster Norman R. Adamson, Sr. of Waco announced today.

Broz, age 54, a native of Veribest, has served as Officer - in - Charge of the Lowake Post Office for the past year. She has lived in the Lowake community for the past 28 years.

Postmaster selections are made on the basis of merit from a list of qualified candidates submitted to the Sectional Center Manager by a Review Committee. The Review Committee, composed of a Sectional Center Director and two Postmasters from the same Sectional Center as the vacancy, reviews the applicants for the position and recommends to the Sectional Center Manager the candidates for interview. The Sectional Center Manager then selects and recommends to the Division Manager, for appointment, the candidate who best meets the position requirements.

Broz is a member of the Lowake and Lowake H.D. Club, Community Center Association and the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rowena.

She is a president of Rowena VFW Auxiliary and serves as Commodity Coordinator. She is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 160. She is an SPJST Sales Representative. She and her husband, Stanley, who is District IV Director, have 3 children: Gary of Brady, Mrs. Debra Halfmann of Rowena and Carl of Lowake. They also have 3 grandchildren.

The Oath of Office will be administered Friday, September 18, at 10:30 a.m. at the Lowake Post Office.

It is this Sunday that we have our District V Family Day at Lodge No. 88, 1435 Beall Street, Houston. We district officers hope to see you and your family.

Don't forget to bring your paintings to display in any or all three categories: (1) Landscapes (2) Flowers (3) Still Life. Rosalee Kostom will be in charge of this.

Registration starts at 11:30 with Lee Pflughaupt in charge. Be sure to also register for door prizes; Janet Raymond will have charge of this.

A brief social starts at 12 noon when you can enjoy your favorite drink donated by Lodge No. 88. Then at 12:30 we will have the covered dish dinner; the district will furnish the meat, and you are asked to bring a covered dish or a dessert. Some of the helpers for the dinner are Lillie Spies in charge of pastry, Edna Wehring in charge of coffee and tea with Alvin Raymond helping, and Louis Hanus bringing the bread.

We will be able to enjoy good accordion music by our Accordionist Jerry Hurta at noon and during the afternoon.

Dear Readers: Our September meeting was called to order by President Barbara Macek.

All officers were present, except Treasurer Shirley Waits.

The members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and stood for a moment of silent prayer for deceased members Ernest Shiller and Albina Vanicek.

Monthly reports were given by various committee chairmen. There was much discussion on the bands playing at the hall; hopefully, next year we will have a good year dancewise. There was some discussion on the board report given by Barbara Macek.

The District H fall meeting will be at 2 p.m. in Round Rock and dinner at 5 p.m. Each family is asked to bring a salad and/or dessert for the dinner plus 2 party items per family are needed for the games after our district meeting. We need as many members from Lodge 24 present at this meeting as possible.

President Barbara Macek appointed the following: Salary Committee -Chairmen Billy Smetanka, Robert Macek and Johnnie Chervenka. Rules & Regulations Committee -- Chairman Margaret Mikeska, Linda Smetanka and LaVerne Cabla.

Those celebrating birthdays in September are Margaret Mikeska and Doris Vanicek. Celebrating anniversaries are Billy and Linda Smetanka, Jerry and Louise Zavodny, Harold and Doris Vanicek, Charlie and Shirley Waits, and Larry and Nancy Posvar. Congratulations to all of you and hope you have a wonderful day!

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our last lodge meeting was held Monday, August 31st at 7:30 p.m. with Jerry Pechal presiding. Flag Bearers Amy Kohutek and Melanie Koslovsky brought in the flags and led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

We remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of deceased members, Sisters Frances Pavlica, Millie Bartek Lesikar, Amalia Schneider and Brother Joseph J. Simek. May they rest in eternal peace and sincerest sympathy to the bereaving families of these departed.

Secretary Delores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, sales representatives and trustees.

Correspondence read included a thank you from Michael Morris for the moral and monetary support given to him for being the youth representative of Lodge 47 in district and state competition, a thank you card from the Frances Pavlica family for the wreath of flowers, a letter from Brother Leonard Mikeska, SL Secretary/Treasurer, regarding the liquor and general liability insurance that the Supreme Lodge is trying to obtain a package at a reduced rate so all lodges could afford it, a letter from Brother Howard Leshikar informing us that David Dohnalik, Robert Hejl, Thomas Kopriva, Beth Jez, Stephanie Mikeska, Linda Pechal, Mark Tepera and Althea Young from Lodge 47 were selected to receive college scholarships from the SL, a card from Linda Pechal expressing her thanks for the scholarship she received and a letter from DYC Brother Frank Klinkovsky regarding the upcoming District H fall meeting and fun carnival September 20th at Lodge 187, Round Rock. Read his letter in the Vestnik very carefully for the full details.

New members accepted into Lodge 47 were Jessica L. Kirby, Elsie H. Carlson, James E. Hanusch, Lillian Ann Hanusch, Phil E. Hanusch, Dorothy Ann Zarosky, Betty Hall Pisar and Joycelyn L. Meyer.

Conversions were George W. Pavelka, Jr., Leon George Zavodny, Jr., Mary Frances Zavodny and Theresa Ann Zavodny. Transferred from Lodge 84 to Lodge 47 were Patricia Rose Rogers, Rose Wells and Gwendolyn Ann Wells. A warm welcome to each named and do try to attend meetings and other lodge activities.

On the sick list and sent get well cards were Sisters Frances Hejl, Lillian Kosarek, Theresa Chlapek, Ella Kotrla and Annie Jakubec and Brothers Clarence Sula, Robert Haisler, Jimmy Schroeder, Raymond Mikeska and Gordon Kohutek. Since the meeting, Brother Will Junek is hospitalized. We are hoping you all are recovering nicely. (Sister Frances Hejl passed away September 7th.)

Since the Beseda group is dancing for the Czech Day at the State Fair Sunday, October 18th, Lodge 47 is sponsoring a bus to the fair.

Reservations from Lodge 47 members are being taken by Sister Martha Klusacek until Sunday, October 4th; the next lodge meeting. A letter in last week's Vestnik gave more details.

The officers' reports included thank your to Brother Henry Janacek for extending the vent - a - hood from the kitchen, Brother Charlie Sirney for cutting the bar ditches, and Brother Woodrow for ordering and delivering the air - conditioning filters by the president; all other officers gave good reports and the board minutes reflected on the Christmas party with

Family Night Social Committee Chairman Tim Reese stated that hamburgers and French fries will again be featured for the September 18th family night. Taroks will be played and taught to anyone interested in learning.the game so come out to eat those good country - style hamburgers and join the fun in Tarok and domino games.

All chairpersons gave excellent reports for the month of August; we had a lot going on and five Saturdays as well.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky gave her report. Vice President Darryl Kortis presided with 25 members present with one new member, Jacob Kamas. Their "Lock - in" really went over. There were 33 youngsters and 4 adults, the youth leader, assistant and their spouses who spent the night.

Only a few slept; the others played games all night long. I forgot to congratulate the Lodge 47 Youth Club Beseda Dancers for winning the State title at State YAD in my last report.

My apologies! Congratulations to all the winners and the other participants, too. Better luck next time.

Brother Frank Klinkovsky detailed the fall meeting activities at Round Rock September 20th and asked that everyone come because they are hoping 300 district members are present, so be there and be counted.

Brother Willie E. Kohutek spoke briefly on the upcoming convention in June, 1988. It seems far off but this year is flying by so fast that the convention will be here before we know it.

In new business, a three - member Salary Committee was selected to review the salaries of the officers and the chairpersons for 1988 and they are Brothers Frank Klinkovsky, Louis Kohutek and Floyd Stuteville.

Birthday will be celebrated by Sister Dorothy Morris and wedding anniversaries will be celebrated by Brother Calvin and Sister Delores Skrabanek and Brother Leo and Gertrude Kahlig. Here's hoping you enjoy your special day in a "special" way and that you may celebrate many more.

Door prize winners were Sister Della Mares and Brother Henry Janacek.

The meeting was attended by 59 members and 2 visitors, Ann Balusek and Freddie Schroeder. Be making plans to be at the next lodge meeting Sunday, October 4th at 2 p.m. and don't forget the District 11 fall meeting at Round Rock, September 20th!

Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home will hold its regular monthly meeting and social the third Sunday of the month, September 20th, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Firemen's Hall in Sweet Home. There will be a short business meeting, followed by a drawing of door prizes and someone with a birthday in July, August or September will win a birthday cake baked by Millie Kutac.

Games will then be played and the lodge will furnish liquid refreshments.

Dear Members: Our meeting September 8th at 7 p.m. was called to order by our President Charlie Matcek.

Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mary Werner. We remained standing for a minute of silence in memory of our departed member Raymond Matula.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes and also a thank you note from the Vlasta Holt family.

Financial report was also given by Mary Werner. Gilbert Walzel gave the Special Fund report and Willie Mae Kuykendall gave the treasurer's report.

All were accepted as read.

Susan Matcek was accepted as new member of our lodge. We are very happy to have her.

Benita Walzel read the Rules and Regulations changes; after a discussion they were accepted.

Door prize winners were Vlasta Nowotny and Edwin Susan. Names were drawn by Edwin Susan.

The meeting adjourned for social hour during which we enjoyed a delicious German chocolate cake baked by Winifred Susan to honor her husband, Edwin, on his birthday.

Coffee was also served. Edwin is a faithful and loyal member of our Lodge 81 (also our bar manager).

"Happy Birthday" was sung to him with our best wishes for many, many more healthy and happy years.

Our next meeting will be October 13th at 7 p.m. Members, why not come and enjoy our meetings and social hour?

This board is responsible for all income and disbursements of the lodge and is pleased to report that the first installment of our pledge has been met, and we are aware of the importance of the program which the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas embraces and represents.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The following members met to sing: Emily Stuteville, Ruby Bolton, Della Psencik, Mary Holick, Anne Krcha, Albina Mikeska, Martha Klusacek, Vallie Zavodny, Leon Zavodny, Georgia Sodek, Dorothy Pechal, Helen Janacek and Henry Janacek, the accordionist. We were privileged to have visitors Joe and Christine Marek.

They joined us in the singing and may become members.

The next regular singing will be at Burmont Nursing Home. The Telephone Committee will be informing you of the exact time and date. We will not meet Tuesday, September 22nd at the hall; a farmer's meeting is scheduled to discuss the farm program for 1988.

I'm hoping everyone can go to sing at the nursing home; that is where our Song Director Annie Jakubec is a resident for about two weeks and it will be good to see her.

From The District Youth Counselors District II Fall Meeting If you want to attend an exciting meeting of fun, food, fellowship and prizes, you cannot afford to miss the District Il meeting at Lodge No. 187 at Round Rock on September 20, 1987.

The time is 2 p.m. and we have a special door prize drawingThe name is "Be on time drawing." Three will be a drawing for a winner every 30, minutes beginning at 3 p.m., but you must register before 2 p.m. for this contest.

Districts V and VI Lifeguards, L to R: The meeting will be called to order Karen Korenek, Vernon Hegwood, at 2 p.m. and will be short. It will be and Bobby Allbritton. followed by 2 songs by the youth which they learned at camp and they will ask you to join them, also; this will be followed by a get - acquainted name then bingo, 15-minute intermission, carnival games, horseshoe tournament, cake walk, horserace game and a drawing; then food and fellowship. There will be washer pitching set up so you can test your skill plus 2 volleyball courts for the youth and adults. Now, you can see it will be a full afternoon of activities but you must be present to be a part of it!

The District II officers invite all members and their families to attend this meeting; our goal is to have 300 in attendance and we are counting on you!

SPJST Lodge No. 29, Taylor youth have had a busy summer attending eight parades in the Central Texas area. Their awards were Austin Aqua Festival (Category II Runner - up), Coupland Best Fest (First - Most Beautiful), Taylor Fourth of July (First - Most Original), Pflugerville Deutschen P fest (Second - Most Beautiful), Elgin Western Days (Second - Best Out - of - Town Entry), Taylor Rodeo (Third - Best Overall Theme), and Granger (Honorable Mention).

Many thanks to my assistant, Karen par, and District V YC Marie Stayton for all their help. Our nurse, Nancy Steubing, did her part in taking care of all our ailing campers.

The chaperones we had were wonderful and very helpful. Thank you Louis Hanus, Johnny Richardson, Wanda Dorotik, Mary Ann Karasek, Lora and Ed Mabry, Vic Dybala, Bill and Yvonne Morris, Rebecca Dluhos and Elizabeth Hermis. You are a special group of people!

Many thanks to our lifeguards, Karen Korenek, Bobby Allbritton, and Vernon Hegwood. They were wonderful with the campers!

Last of all, the LITs were SUPERB in their leadership and creativeness.

They helped with craft and were in charge of sports, folk dancing, hikes, singing, court, party planning, scavenger hunts, and red, white and blue (which taught the campers about our flag.) My sincere thanks to Marcy Dorotik, Jennifer Dluhos, Landis Dornak, Crystal Wallace, Marlene Migl, Darlene Migl, Jody Henderson, and Charlene Mondrik. SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo - Hillje Youth Club held a meeting on September 3 at 7 p.m. in the Commercial State Gold Room.

There were 9 members present and one new member Jody Krpec.

A report was given by Lori Holub and Kim Kacal on District VI and State YADs. We will have a Family Day on October 25 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the SPJST Hall in Hillje.

Our next meeting will be a Halloween party and meeting on October 1 at 7 p.m. in the Commercial Bank Gold Room. Mrs. Jerry Mondrik served refreshments.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Our monthly meeting of the youth club was well - attended September 3rd. We recognized those who participated in State YAD. Our program was a special treat. We watched the videos of both District and State YAD. After the meeting the youth gave our leaders, Mrs. Betty Schoenemann and Mrs. Ann Schoeneman a surprise thank you party. We wanted to thank them for all the help they give us all during the year. We had cookies, ice cream and drinks.

Our next meeting will be October 7th.

Lodge 66 Youth Goes To District III Camp Dear Youth and Readers: Lodge 66 youth went to the District III youth camp at Camp Val Verde July 23rd through July 26th. We all had a great time.

There were twelve youth members, one LIT, and two youth leaders at camp. The youth were Alicia Neslony, Shane Pruitt, Denise and Sherri Kofnovec, Candace and Chris Pavlicek, Ashley Locke, Greg Nors, Larry Yates, Terry Gilchrest, Pat Wright and Roman Spradlin. Donna Stanislav was the LIT and Patty

Neslony and Gladys Yates were the youth leaders.

My duty at camp this year was working in the craft cabin. It was very enjoyable because I was with all of the youth and watched them create and enjoy the crafts. I "bunked" in with the teenage girls. I wore out a pair of tennis shoes hiking every night. Every year camp is a new experience and I am looking forward to next year.

Lodge 66 President George Pauling came for a visit and lunch on Saturday. My husband, James Yates, came for the Saturday night activities.

I would like to encourage you two to come as counselors next year.

The August 6th meeting of Lodge 84, Dallas was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Aaron Kopecky, vice president. There were 16 members present, 1 guest and 13 adults (7 of them were leaders).

The minutes were approved as read.

There was no correspondence. The treasurer said that everyone paid their dues, so don't forget your $1 at the next meeting. Chris Coker's friend, named Mark, was our visitor (guest).

We welcomed him, again, to our club.

Unfinished business was Adam Faraizl's play "Tin Pan Ali" which was scheduled for Friday, August 7th, meet at the Garland Civic Center.

SYAD, August 16th, was discussed, reminding everyone of the new category of decorated cakes. Beseda practices for SYAD were scheduled for August 6th and 12th at 7:30 p.m. at the lodge.

New business was Youth Extravanza - doors open at 5 p.m. for dinner and entertainment. This is everyone who participated at the District III YAD and/or the SYAD could showl, their crafts and talent number to the mother lodge, or those who did not see the

activity, who were in the tabulating room. Our next meeting is Monday, September 21st at 7:30 p.m. at the lodge.

The vice president asked our Youth Leader Bessie Petr to add to our meeting, and she did not have anything else to report; other than due to bad weather at Wet 'n Wild that we re scheduled the swim party to next Monday, the 10th. Everyone agreed and adjourned the meeting.

Our second swim party still had bad weather, but 14 children, 1 guest and 14 adults (6 of them were leaders), still got to swim and later the clouds went away.

Due to me practicing for SYAD, I was unable to write the results of the August 6th meeting. Please forgive me and I will have this letter on time net month.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The SPJST Lodge No. 40 Youth Club met at 7 p.m. September 3, 1987, in the Commercial State Bank Gold Room of El Campo.

We had a brief meeting. The District VI fall social will be held October 25th.

At this time, we will perform all of our talent entries from YAD. We will also be doing some other skits. All crafts we have done in the past year will be displayed. We also discussed our 1987 Christmas Fundraiser. This project should be under way shortly.

After the meeting, Mrs. Jerry Mondrik served refreshments.

Our next meeting will be a Halloween party. Everyone will come dressed in some sort of costume. It will be held October 1st at 7 p.m.

Dear Members, We had our youth club meeting on July 19 with 14 members present and 3 adults.

We planned a swimming party on Thursday, August 20 at West Pladium Pool. Everyone was encouraged to come and bring a friend.

Our youth club officers were sworn in by Vice President Mary Alice Langlotz. Sister Langlotz thank you ior a job well done.

The top point winners were honored with a check from the Libbie Parma Trust Fund. This check matched the one we got from District YAD. We, the youth would like to thank the bingo workers and members for this Trust Fund.

Our youth meeting attendance has been down due to vacations. I hope everyone has a good vacation and gets back to our meetings. We miss you when you are not with us.

The birthday cake was brought by Matthew Pavlicek. The door prize was won by Ashley Locke and Shane Pruitt.

3in Memoriam, We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 15, Buckholts, wish to express our sympath y , on behalf of our entire membership, to the family of BEN V YBIRAL, who passed away Tuesday, July 28, 1987, in Waco, Texas at the age of 88.

Brother Vybiral was born April 24, 1899 in Czechoslovakia to Joseph and Josephine (Tomciek) Vybiral. He came to the United States with his parents at the age of 4. They landed in Galveston and, shortly after, they settled in Flatonia, then at Buckholts.

He married Minnie V. Tomasek on October 9, 1923. She died on August 18, 1979. They were engaged in farming and lived in the Ad Hall community for about 38 years. They retired in 1961 and moved to Cameron, Texas.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 15 for 69 years. He was 19 years old when elected financial secretary of Lodge 15 and he served in this office for over 30 years.

Services for Brother Vybiral were held July 30 at 11 a.m. at Marek Burns - Laywell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William Anderson officiating. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery at Cameron, Texas.

Pallbearers were grandsons.

Survivors include 2 sons, Bennie Vybiral of Bryan and Johnnie Vybiral of Temple; 3 daughters, Mrs. Alvin (Annie) Krupicka of Waco, Mrs. Lawrence (Minnie) Hertenberger of Texas City and Mrs. Henry (Irene) Kluck of Waco; 4 sisters, Frances Gelner, Mary Krause and Josie Reynolds, all of Cameron, Albina Machalicek of Taylor; 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth on behalf of our membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother LARRY ROGER SCHRAMM who passed away Monday, July. 20, 1987 at a Dallas hospital after a short illness, at the age of 39.

Larry was born in Fort Worth and graduated from Castleberry High School in 1965. He was in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He had been a self - employed landscaper for 15 years.

He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and a member of Lodge No. 154 since November, 1974.

Rosary was recited Tuesday night at the Mount Olivet Funeral Chapel at 7 p.m.

Funeral Mass was held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church.

Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Survivors include his parents, Frank and Frances Schramm; three brothers, Frank J. Schramm, John B. Schramm and Scott Schramm, all of Fort Worth; Doris Schramm of The Colony and Suzanne Collier of Fort Worth.

Arrangements were by Mount Olivet Funeral Home.

Brother Henry was a lifelong resident of Waco. He had served in the Army and was a retired Postal Service employee. He was a KJT member and a Lodge 66 SPJST member since June, 1959.

Survivors include his wife, Edith Narovec of Waco; two daughters, Christine Stephens of Woodway and Teresa Norwood of Austin; and four grandchildren.

BARBARA JOYCE JEZEK BROWN, who passed away August 3, 1987 in a Temple hospital at the age of 36.

A lifelong Temple resident, Mrs. Brown was a 1969 graduate of Temple High School. She graduated from Temple Junior College and graduated with honors from Texas State Technical Institute in Waco as dental technician. Mrs. Brown was a member of Beta Sigma Pi, St. Mary's Catholic Church and Academy SPJST Lodge No. 177.

Survivors are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Jezek of Temple; one son, Alan Michael Brown of Temple; one brother, Leon Victor Jezek of Temple.

Brother Urban died Thursday, August 6, 1987 at his home in Wharton. He was born on July 10, 1913, in Wharton County, Texas. He was a World War II veteran and a retired employee of the Texas Highway Department.

Funeral Mass for John Louis Tydlacka of Dime Box, was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 6 in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dime Box, with the Rev. Monsignor Emilian Follyn officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Dime Box. Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, in Phillip - Luckey Chapel, led by Ben M. Kocurek. Mr. Tydlacka died Monday evening, August 3 in Burleson County Hospital.

He was born January 10, 1899, in Burleson County, to the late John and Annie (Blinka) Tydlacka. He had lived in Burleson and Lee counties all his life and was a farmer all his life. He was a member of St . Joseph's Catholic Church in Dime Box. He was married to Margaret Koudelka on August 8, 1922. She preceded him in death March 28, 1983. He had been a resident of the Leisure Lodge Nursing Center in Caldwell since December, 1983.

Survivors include a son, Arnold Tydlacka of Dime Box; a daughter, Mrs. Emil (Hattie) Mikulec of Edge; 4 grandchildren; 2 great - grandchildren; one half - brother, Rudolf Cepcar of Giddings.

Serving as pallbearers were T.J. Krenek, Patrick Tydlacka, David Sherrill, Lonnie Mikulec, Joe C. Koudelka, George Koudelka and Glen C. Tydlacka.

Honorary pallbearers were Adolph Koudelka, Henry Krenek and Pete Sukup.

Brother John received his 50 - year membership pin this year.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Danbury Lodge 139, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to extend our sincere condolence to the bereaved family of our departed sister ELLIE FILIPP of Danbury, who passed away on Friday, August 7, 1987 at the age of 83 at her home.

Born in Moulton on October 29, 1903, Sister Filipp was a resident of Danbury since 1929. She and her husband owned and managed the Filipp's Cafe in Danbury from 1951 until retirement in 1968. Under their management, the restaurant was well known for its excellent food and was a favorite eating place for people from a wide surrounding area.

Mrs. Filipp was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and the Ladies' Auxiliary of American Legion Post 501 in Danbury.

Survivors are her husband E.J. Filipp, Sr. of Danbury; son E.J. (Junior) Filipp of Danbury; daughters, Lydia Shock of Danbury and Evelyn Lassman of Point Blank; sister, Vlasta Stulka of Shiner; 10 grandchildren and 22 great - grandchildren.

A rosary for Sister Filipp was recited on August 9 at 7 p.m. at the Palms Chapel of Roses in Angleton. The Funeral Mass was celebrated at i 1 a.m. on Monday, August 10 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Danbury with Fathers Anthony John Connoly Orlando and officiating. Interment was at St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery in Danbury.

Pallbearers were Michael Lassman, Dennis Lassman, Greg Filipp, Glen Shock, Steve Brothers, Dennis Rice, Bobby Mathews and Robert Crocker.

Brother Pesak was born December 10, 1914 in Shiner, Texas to Joseph and Emillie (Merecka) Pesak. He was a member of Lodge No. 148 since October 26, 1939. He received his 50 year pin.

Brother Pesak served in World War Ii as a sergeant under General Patten in the 4th Armored Division. He was a member of the Cecil Lee Post No. 649 American Legion of Blessing, Texas.

Services were held at Taylor Bros.

Funeral Home Chapel. Rosary was at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Catholic Church and funeral services were then held Wednesday at St. Peter's Church with Rev. Peter Higgens officiating.

In Memoriam ANNIE MALINA HRIBEK, age 87, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 1987, in Austin, Texas. She was born on February 23, 1900 in Bastrop County to Tomas and Rosa Volcik Malina.

Services were held at the Marrs Jones Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, June 19 at 4 p.m. with Rev. Daniel Marek officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Hribek's survivors include a daughter, Naomi Novosad of Point Comfort; 5 grandchildren; 2 great granddaughters; 2 sons - in - law; 1 niece and 1 nephew.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hribek; daughter, Joyce Krusekopf; 2 sisters and 2 brothers.

Pallbearers were Jerome Malina, J.D. Malina, Daniel Malina, Stephen Malina, John Hribek and August Medana.

Mrs. Hribek was a member of SPJST Lodge 38, Kovar since the age of 21 and a lifelong member of the Smithville Brethren Church.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II Activities Ann Marie Harris is the new resident to join the group at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. H in July and staff -Marcia Bowers, LVN. Yolanda Tafallo had given a crocheted doll to the Residents' Activity Fund. This was sold off on tickets and was greatly appreciated.

Mildred Allen was the winner.

The senior citizen luncheon held at the Immanuel United Church of Christ was attended by Helen Valcik.

We are proud to announce that the last inspection the Texas Department of Health has rated the nursing home a superior facility.

Monday afternoons, July 6 and 20, Betty Seiler came from the library to show movies. The residents enjoyed movies and popcorn.

On Monday, July 13, the Hope Lutheran Church of Beasley came to have sing - a - long and brought cookies and had a social afterwards.

They also brought prizes for bingo.

Everyone enjoyed the afternoon.

Several KCs came to play bingo Tuesday afternoon, July 14, with the residents. The residents enjoyed bingo and visiting with the ones present.

The First Baptist Women of Needville visited and had Bible study every Tuesday in July. We appreciate them coming.

Thursday morning, July 16, the Assembly of God Church Women from Rosenberg came to sing with the residents and visited. In the afternoon, Garland Hurtye with the Fort Bend Humane Society brought dogs for therapy for the residents.

Thursday evening, July 30, Larry Ognoski, Fred Gerke and George Lolley provided music and singing for the residents. Everyone had a great time. Families and friends are invited to attend.

"Happy Birthday" for the month of July are residents Edmund Brandi, Mary Ann Spezia, Ladik Sabrsula, Bernice Bradley and Anna Belle Schoppe; also staff members, Viola Vadles, Dorothy Faniel, Catherine Lukasik, Erma Gatelka, Rosa Garza, Jeanette Darley and Martha Marx.

The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society is sponsoring a Czech Heritage Festival at the Victoria Community Center Annex, 2905 E. North Street, Victoria, Texas on Sunday, October 18, 1987, from I1 a.m. to 8 pin.

An afternoon of entertainment is planned which includes an "Accordian Jam Session." Miss Austin AF Finalist During the 1987 Austin Aqua Festival activities Janine Veselka, daughter of Alex and Helen Veselka of Taylor, received the title of Miss Austin Aqua - Festival finalist 1988. interview, Janine competed in swimsuit and evening gown competition where she placed in the top seven out of all competing contestants. Contestants served as ambassadors for Austin and surrounding areas throughout the festival.

Janine is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 187 of Round Rock and was Mayfete Queen in 1984. Miss Veselka is currently a senior at the University of Texas at Austin where she is majoring in marketing and management.

Robstown Youth Receives Award Jennifer Sue Marek received the Presidential Academic Fitness Award at - end - of school ceremonies at Pretrolina Elementary School.

The program is designed to encourage students to achieve their full academic potential. The award is offered to students at the exit grade of each school level: elementary, middle and high school.

The elementary recipient must attain a "B" plus average, accumulated in grades 3, 4 and 5, and must have received a recent score placing him or her above the 80th percentile on any nationally recognized standarized achievement battery test.

A framed certificate signed by the President and the Secretary of Education was presented to the qualified student.

Mr. and Mrs. William J. Marek are the parents of Jennifer who will attend the Junior High in Bishop this fall.

Jennifer is a member of Robstown Lodge No. 117 since birth and a member of the youth club for 6 years.

He has worked at the Texas American Bank for 4 years while going to school.

You remember that in your study of English, a pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. In Czech, there are 7 types of pronouns.

1. Personal: jä, ty, on, ona, oni, ony, my and vy.

2. Possessive: infij, tvuj, jeho, jeji, ng , vas, etc.

3. Demonstrative: ten, ta, to, tento, tato, toto, onen, ona, ono.

4. Interrogative: kdo? co? kterY? jak'? ei?

5. Relative: ktery, jen (who, which, that...), kdo, co.

6. Indefinite: Nekdo, nekter9, nejak9, kdo-si, co-si; quantitative pronouns: kaid9, vgechen; sam, sama, samo, t92, ta2, tee latter all expressing Identity.

7. Negative: Nikdo, nic, ladn9

6. Indefinite pronouns: nekdo, nekterY, nejakY, nekde, nekdy; the suffix si: kdo-si, co-si, kde-si, kdy-si, ei-si; also the suffix -koli: kdokoli, cokoli, jak'-koli, kterYkoli; also the prefix lec: lec-kdo.

KaidY may be used only with countable objects; v gechen for uncountable objects. In the plural, v gichni does duty for both countables and uncountables.

Ex.: kaidY elovek, kaRla iena, kaide devee. vgichni lido, Vgechny ieny, vgechny chleby, Vgechna deveata.

Sam means "alone": byl jsem tam sam.

Sam', sama, same, are used to express an idea of fullness or richness: stromy byly sam' kvet; byli tam sami cizinci; na samem konci; u sameho okna.

7. Negative pronouns: if the prefix ni is added to the personal pronouns, they are turned into negative pronouns ni-kdo, nic. From kterjr, jakjr, the negative pronoun 2Adn9 is used before nouns: 2adn9 elovek, 2adna 2.ena, etc.

1. Personal pronouns: the longer forms— mne, mne, tebe, tob'e— are used in emphasis and after prepositions. The shorter forms— mi, me, te, ti— are used when no stress is needed, and are used AFTER the stressed word.

After prepositions, of course, the j becomes it— do neho, k nernu, s ni, s nimi, etc.

2. Possessive pronouns: correspond to the personal pronouns. For the 1st person singular, the possessive pronoun is milli (ma, me) and plural: na g . For the 2nd person singtilar, it is tviij (tva, tve)— plural vas (vase). For the 3rd person singular, masculine and neuter, the possessive pronoun is jeho, which remains invariable; for the 3rd person singular feminine, it is jeji; for the 2nd person plural, it is jejich, for all 3 genders. It also remains invariable.

3. Demonstrative pronouns: ten, ta, to, tento, tenhie. Colloquially, tamten or tamhle is used for "onen" (yonder, that one). The gender of course, determines which you use.

4. Interrogative pronouns: Kdo, koho, komu, o kom, kYm; co, eeho,

Some nouns are used only in the plural form although they denote a single thing. You know the problem

from English (shears, pants, glasses).

Some of the frequently used nouns: penize, Gen. penez — money, gaty, G. sate — clothes, niliky, ni.12ek — scissors, shears. brYle, brYli — glasses, dvefe, dvefi — door, hodiny, hodin — clock, hodinky, hodinek — watch, noviny novin — newspaper, kalhoty, kalhot — trousers, pants, prazdniny, prazdnin — holidays, testa, tist --mouth, kamna, kamen — stove. Some place names: Cechy, G. Cech, Hradeany, Hradean, Ceske Budejovice, Cesk'ch Budejovic.

Sometimes there is a singular form of the noun with a different meaning: hodina — hour, hodiny — clock; novina — a single piece of news, an information, noviny — newspaper.

5. When counting plural nouns a special kind of numerals must be used: jedny, dvoje, troje, &very, patery, lestery, sedmery, osmery, devatery, desatery.

Observe: Do toho pokoje vedou troje dvefe. Moje hodinky jdou dobfe.

Machu Reunion The 17th annual Machu Reunion will be Sunday, Septembei 27, 1987 at the Granger Brethren Fellowship Building. Registration starts at 10:30 a.m., followed by a luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Families attending are asked to bring a meat, vegetable or dessert dish.

Bring family mementos, pictures and also items for an auction; items consisting of homemade or homebaked or canned item goods or white elephant. Contact your children and relatives. Also try to attend church services and Sunday school at the Granger Brethren Church.

Surovik - Nedbalek Reunion The 15th Kulhanek reunion of the descendants of Antonin and Celestina Kulhanek will be held on Sunday, September 27, 1987, at Sts. Peter & Paul dining hall in Frelsburg, Texas. A Holy Mass for deceased family members will begin at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. Each family is asked to bring a basket lunch for their family. Plates, napkins, forks, knives, bread, coffee, tea and ice will be furnished. Serving of the meal will at 12:30 p.m. There will be a short business meeting at 2 p.m. Each family registering will be eligible for the drawing of a door prize.

Mr. Leonard Kulhanek, historian for the reunion, will have copies of the book, The Kulhanek Family History Book, which may be purchased at the reunion.
