To ALL who attend State YAD -You are reminded that your quiet attendance during performances, speeches, etc. is very much desired so that the ones performing will not be disrupted.

August 16th will be here in a few days and please keep in mind that there are TEN (10) pictures planned as written up in the State YAD Schedule.

The persons in charge of the program and youth are urged to stress to the youth, that ONLY first place winners' pictures will be published in the Vestnik and to make sure those are on hand to speed the process so everyone can leave. We ask your cooperation! ***

The NFCA Law Committee is to be congratulated on securing the enactment of the Model Fraternal Code in everyone of the six states in which the Code was introduced this year. Here is a recapitulation of those states: Hawaii -- Effective January 1, 1988; Louisiana -- Effective January 1, 1988.

North Carolina -- Effective January 1, 1988; North Dakota -- Effective January I, 1988; Oregon -- Effective. January 1, 1988.

Washington -- Effective January 1, 1988.

The Law Committee is continuing its discussions with the Pennsylvania Insurance Department in an effort to produce an agreed MFC bill for introduction in Pennsylvania this year. ***

Teenagers who bypass the dairy case for the diet - soda shelves may increase their chances of later developing osteoporosis, a loss of bone mass that makes older women, in particular, susceptible to fractures. Ongoing studies by nutrition experts at the University of North Carolina and the University of Utah indicate that teens who give up milk at puberty -- and thus tend to consume as little as half of their 1,200 - milligram recommended daily allowance of calcium -- develop bones with less mineral content than do milk - drinking peers. To complicate matters, many of the carbonated beverages teens substitute for milk contain phosphates, which may keep calcium in the diet from being absorbed into the bones. What to do? Between the ages of 11 and 19

(alter 19, the RDA falls to 800 milligrams) kids should consume three 8 - ounce glasses of milk a day or the equivalent -- two cups of broccoli or 1 lz ounces of cheese equal a cup of milk -- to get the recommended 1,200 milligrams of calcium. Since research suggests that young bones may be able to store extra calcium, teens who are careful about their calcium intake today may be defending against osteoporosis tomorrow. ***

Travel by rented car on your vacation agenda? Expect to be asked whether you want to purchase immunity from any liability in case of damage. Is the "collision - damage waiver" worth the extra $9 or so a day? It may be. Major car - rental companies used to limit a renter's liability for damage to around $3,000, but they sharply raised the stakes.

At various local car - rental agencies, customers who decline the waiver are now liable for all damage, up to the full value of the car. But don't automatically sign up. You may already be protected under your personal auto insurance. According to the Insurance Information Institute, approximately 60 percent of auto insurers extend collision benefits to a rented car. Before you rent, check with your agent. If you are covered, ask about restrictions. For example: What happens if you demolish a rental car worth more than your own? Are you covered for travel outside the United States? Find out, too, if your personal - policy deductible applies with a rented car. ***

If you get a phone call from a stranger offering to sell some " good, strong" herbicides and pesticides for your backyard garden -- "the kind you cannot get any more" -- do not buy.

The chemicals, advises the American Association of Nurserymen, may be among those outlawed or restricted by the Environmental Protection Agency, such as DDT and EDB. Some have been found to cause cancer in humans, and others are dangerous to animals.

Best advice: Buy only products you know from dealers you trust. If in doubt about any herbicide or pesticide, call your Department of Agriculture extension agent. ***

Your mother has just died. You know she had a life insurance policy, but you cannot find it anywhere. You may be able to get some help from the American Council of Life Insurance (ACLI). If you provide the insured person's name, address, birth date and Social Security number, the council will ask its 100 or so largest member companies to search their files. If the missing policy is found, you will receive a copy. The service is free.

Family Day For Lodge 4, Halletsville Dear Members: Our lodge will hold its annual Family Day on Sunday, August 23 at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville beginning with a fried chicken dinner with trimmings to be served at noon with a small charge as usual. Ladies of the lodge are asked to bring cakes, pies or kolache to be served with the meal.

District VI Director Matt Vanek and Jerome J. Hlavaty of the Insurance Committee will be special guests. Our 50 - year members will be recognized.

A "42" Domino Tournament will be held with prizes to be given to the first and second teams. A surprise walk will also provide entertainment and door prizes will be given.

Refreshments will be served.

Members and their families are cordially invited to attend and spend an enjoyable day.

Snook Annual Country Store & Barbecue SPJST Lodge No. 9 Youth Club is announcing their annual country store event in conjuction with the Snook Fire Department at the SPJST Hall in Snook on Sunday, August 23rd.

Festivities for the youth club will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. There will be a fishing booth, a white elephant table, crafts, jellies, plus all sorts of goodies.

Our next Family Night Social at Seaton Star Lodge No. 47 will be Friday, August 21st. We will sell hamburgers and French fries starting • at 7 p.m. We hope to see a lot of our members and friends come out, eat with us, play dominoes and/or Taroky or just visit.

Our July Family Night was very well - attended and we hope to have even more come out Friday, August 21st.

The Teens held their meeting Friday, July 17 and decorated for the Princess Ball afterwards. The Junior Youth are holding their meeting and making name tags for camp. The District III YAD was successful. Campers will be leaving Tuesday and come back Sunday around 2:30 p.m. Tara Andreason is the new lodge queen.

Brandon Andreason is the new lodge king. Congratulations to both of you.

The Czech Culture date was set for July 27th.

Coordinator Sister Ida Schulz gave a report on dues received.

Warrenton Lodge 179 Lodge 179 met for their monthly meeting on July 9, 1987 at 8 p.m.

Vice President Elgene Eckermann presided at the meeting in the absence of the president. In the absence of the secretary, Mike Noak read the minutes of our previous meeting. The financial secretary gave his report followed by the treasurer's report.

Katherine Diane Cordes was voted in as a new member. A motion was made and accepted.

A motion was then made and passed to adjourn, followed by baked ham with trimmings.

The Food Committee advised for the next meeting that we will have cold cuts, and members may bring side dishes.

Our next meeting is set for August 13 at 8 p.m. in the Guest Room at Warrenton.

Lodge 180, Burleson [AUGUST MEETING DATE CHANGED] Dear Members and Friends: Lodge 180 held their meeting on July 21 at 7:30 p.m., with President Louis Grochoske leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Everyone remained standing for a moment of silence in honor of our deceased members and friends.

After roll call of officers, the secretary read the minutes of the June meeting, and then all other officers gave their reports, and all were approved as given.

The president thanked all the people who worked so hard to make the District III YAD a success. We had a nice crowd, and a very enjoyable day.

It was a pleasure to see how talented our youngsters are.

We are sorry to report that Jeff Janek broke his right arm while skating on a "Skate Board," but I understand that Jeff now has given the skate board away. No more skating!

Jeff, we hope your arm is much better.

We wish to extend our sympathy to the families of Adalee Hurta Rourke, a cousin of mine, of Grand Prairie, who passed away Saturday, August 1st.

Adalee was a member of Lodge 84, Dallas and a member of RVOS. Adalee will be missed by all Our August meeting date has been changed to Sunday, August 23 at 2:30 p.m. for our 10th anniversary.

After a short business meeting, we will have sandwiches, chips, cake and homemade ice cream, so, please, members get out your favorite recipes and bring some goodies and join the other members in some fellowship and fun.

We want to send our get well wishes to a number of our members and friends -- Celia Janke had surgery on her knee and I hear she is doing real well, Elizabeth Hurtik Thomas had minor surgery, Ida Mayer had eye surgery, Frances Simmank has been under the weather, Ernest Alfred Dueser fell out of the back door and hasn't been feeling too well, and to all others who are on the sick list.

Congratulations on the marriage of Michell Corjanardy and Christeen Manning in June, and then having their reception at Lodge No 180 during one of our dances. He is a member of Lodge 88, Houston.

Remember our country/western dances every Saturday night, dancing from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Activities Abound Lodge 187, Round Rock

July

July 1987 will go down in the history books as the busiest month ever at Lodge 187. Over 15 different major activities were held at the lodge in July; that corresponds to an average of almost one activity every other day.

Maybe that is why the Board of Trustees have looked like they didn't know „1 they were coming or going most of the time.

Everything started on Friday, July 3, when Lee Roy Matocha's Polka and Waltz Band played at the lodge. The

Wednesday, August 12, 1987—VESTNIK/7 Round Rock Policemen's Association followed closely behind by sponsoring a July 4th celebration that lasted from 11 a.m. Saturday until 1 a.m. Sunday morning. The Policemen's Association arranged for five bands to play during the day - long festivities. Other activities included parachutist drops, a fabulous fireworks, display, horseshoe and washer pitching, volleyball, and barbecue brisket that melted in your mouth, it was so juicy and tender.

July also saw four nights of unprecedented country and western music as a result of the "Country Showdown" music competition. The "Country Showdown" is a nationwide search for the best country and western bands. This year's local competition was sponsored by the KASE - 101 Radio Station, True Value Hard-ware Stores, and Apple Dodge of Austin.

More than 250 bands submitted tapes for consideration. Judges narrowed them down to the top twelve bands that competed against each other on July 8th, 15th, and 22nd. The top three bands then competed for first place on July 28th. The three bands included the Joe Bob and Cindy Burris Band, eople's Choice, and the Scott Hoytt Band. The bands were judged on originality, quality of music, and stage presence.

The Joe Bob and Cindy Burris Band won the competition and, as such, qualifies them for regional competition. Winners of the regional competition will play in a national contest in Nashville that has a $50,000 grand prize. Two years ago the Debonaires won the local event and went on to win the national title. We wish the Joe Bob and Cindy Burris Band the best of luck at the regional and national competition.

The Children's Dance Theatre of Austin sponsored a fund - raising activity on July 24 and Johnny Dee and the Rocket 88's provided the music. Funds raised by the activity were used to help send local youth to New York to compete with other youth from across the nation.

A special Polka Pfest was held at Lodge 187 on Sunday, July 26th.

Three bands provided plenty of polka and waltz music from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. The three bands included the Vrazels, Fritz Hodde, and the Polka Dots. A great time was had by all.

So, as you can see, the above activities made for a very busy month when added to the normal busy schedule. But, all of this could not have been accomplished without the active support of a lot of dedicated volunteers. As such, the Board of Trustees of Lodge 187 would like to take this opportunity to thank the Thrall and Hutto Booster Clubs and all of the members and friends who unselfishly dedicated time and talents to the lodge to make this the most successful month yet on record.

Post Scriptum: Studies of Czech and classes of the same are vitally important in perpetuation of our national heritage as they bring forth the increased ethnic awareness of all involved Czech - Americans.

Everybody knows that the advantages of learning another language are a hundredfold, and the fact that Czech belongs to the Slavonic languages (largest group of European languages) adds to the value of the Czech language. Knowledge of Czech is a halfway step towards the learning of other Slavic languages. Czech is, according to the survey done by the Texas Educational Agency in the early seventies, the third language of Texas, after English and Spanish. Anyone interested in this class should register as soon as possible or should come to the walk - in registration August 26th and 27th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Please do not wait until the start of the first class. Everybody, young or old, is welcome.

Alief Evening School under auspices of Alief Independent School District is again offering a Conversational Czech course right after Labor Day at Hastings High School. The location of this school is between Bellaire Blvd. on the South and Alief - Clodine on the North on the Southwest side of the intersection of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the community of Alief.

The first lesson of this 12 - week course, designed to develop basic skill

Kovar-Volcik-Prcin Reunion The annual family reunion will be held Sunday, August 16, 1987 at the VFW Hall at Circleville, Texas.

If you are a contestant in anything, be sure that you register in time or are in line before registration time is over.

We are asking that everyone cooperate because the people in charge of registration must then move on to other jobs. (The schedule for this day follows this report.)

Please do not put your craft in the display area until after you register. If you have a large craft or several crafts to enter, get your relatives or friends to help you ahead of time. We will again have large signs designating the various craft areas.

Contestants in talent must be sure to bring their own props -- including their tapes, cassettes and the equipment on which to play these. This is very important because we will not be able to furnish the necessary equipment.

Contestants in talent are asked to announce their own selections, but NOT names, lodges or district.

Be sure to get your scrapbooks to your DYC or get them to the YAD during registration time.

We hope you and your club and your district are represented at this State YAD. Do not let them down. If you can't come, be sure to inform your DYC so that your alternate or second place winner may represent your district.

The directions to the Temple High School are as follows: Coming from the south on IH35, take the Adams Avenue Exit, turn left at 31st Street.

The high school is located on your right. Coming from the north on IH35, take the Adams Avenue Exit, take a left on Adams, cross bridge and take left at 31st Street.

There are motels in the Temple area offering nice accommodations if you plan to stay overnight either before or after the State YAD. We are starting a little earlier this year and hope to be able to finish as soon as possible so that people needing to travel a distance will not be inconvenienced. You will also notice that the lunch hour overlaps some of the activities. This is regrettable, but there are many phases to cover and as stated, we hope to finish at a reasonable time.

is announcing their annual country store activities in conjunction with the Snook Fire Department at the SPJST Hall in Snook on Sunday, August 23rd.

Festivities for the youth club will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a fishing booth, a white elephant table, crafts, jellies, plus all sorts of goodies.

The Snook Fire Department will hold their annual fund - raising (barbecue) from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Dear Readers, Lodge No. 39 Youth Club has had a very busy summer but it is coming to an end, while everyone is beginning to think about school starting.

Our group thoroughly enjoyed camp this year and we would like to thank our DYC Susan Skrabanek for that.

We have also competed in our District 1 YAD at Caldwell and had many proud winners!

In craft winnings, we had in 6 - 9 years -- Grant Faust -- 1st place in Science/Education, 1st place in Hobby Kits.

In 10 - 12 -- Jennifer Kubin 1st place in Foods, 1st place in Needlecraft, 2nd place in Science/Education, 2nd place in Handicraft.

In 13 - 14 -- Brian Faust -- 1st place in Constructed Items, 2nd place in Science/Education and also in Pictorial Arts, 3rd place in Handicraft; Denise Holubec 1st place in Foods, 1st place in Needlecraft, 2nd place in Constructed Items; Diane Luza 1st place in Pictorial Arts. In Royalty Brian Faust won 2nd place as king contestant. In Individual Talent Donna Luza won 3rd place, and Brian Faust with Jennifer Kubin won 1st place in Group Talent. So off to State YAD we go with 9 first place winnings.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my youth members for all the hard work and practice we went through preparing for YAD and a special thanks to the parents for getting them to practice every time.

Also thanks to Renea and Carolyn for being there when I needed them. We'll see you at State in Temple!

Snooks YC Attends Camp Dear Readers, Camp was fun. I had fun hiking, swimming and canoeing. The ghost

stories were funny. I also enjoyed the relay games.

The tour of the SPJST Museum was very interesting, also the tour of Richland Mall in Waco was fun, especially, the toy store.

We had our YAD in Caldwell last Sunday and we had many winners.

Everyone had a very good time and we would like to thank Caldwell for being our host.

13, Dime Box Youth Hold Meeting Lodge

The last monthly meeting of the Dime Box Youth Club was held on July 20 at 10 a.m. The meeting was then called to order by President Trudy Krenek. Matthew Ford led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The minutes of our last meeting were read, and the roll was called by Secretary Jennifer Gold. Treasurer Scott Whitsel then gave his report.

We discussed old business. The senior group will go to the Schlitterbahn on August 10th. They will leave the hall at 8 a.m. The Junior group will go to Bastrop where they will go roller skating. They will also go to the Bastrop State Park to swim.

They will go on August 22 and they will leave the hall at 12 noon.

We also picked the date that we will go to the lake; it will be Saturday, August 29th. It will start around 10 a.m. We will eat lunch there and have a meeting. This will be held at Nails Creek Park.

Door prizes were drawn and the meeting was adjourned. Those who attended camp, then left for camp.

District V Youth Went Camping Dear Brothers and Sisters, On July 17, 1987 District V left for cam at Camp Wagon Wheel in Caldwell, Texas. We left for the 4 - day stay at camp at about 1 p.m. with about 50 campers including 3 LITs and several chaperones. LITs were Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl and Crystal Wallace. Our chaperones included Louis Han us, Elizabeth Hermis, Ed Mabry, Lora Mabry, Nancy Steubing, and Marie Stayton. Lifeguards from District V were Bobby Allbritton and Vernon Hegwood.

Everyone enjoyed swimming, horseback riding, sports and crafts, as well as searching for items in a scavenger hunt, learning new dances and how to fold, put up, and take down a flag. We also had parties and dances. One night our theme for the party was "Malibu Beach Club." We all dressed up in bathing suits and played Beach Boys' music. Everyone had a terrific time. Before the party, we had court and initiation with a shaving cream war.

We left from Camp Wagon Wheel on July 20 at about 12:30 p.m. and returned to Lodge 88, in Houston at about 3 p.m.

Dear Members, District I went to Camp Val Verde July 20 - 23, 1987 with District IV. We all had a wonderful time.

After we left camp on July 23, we went to see the Supreme Lodge in Temple. Afterwards, we went to a park and had catered barbecue.

Our lodge also had our monthly meeting on July 30 at 2 p.m. We drew from the box of tickets we sold for a fund - raiser and Charles Luza won the lawn chairs.

Jennifer Kubin won the door prize.

After our meeting we practiced for YAD. We have been very busy with YAD projects.

Dear Members, The youth of Lodge 29 just got home from Junior camp yesterday and, boy, did we have fun. We want to

thank all the leaders, cnaperones, and workers who helped to make camp a lot of fun. Once again, everything ran very smoothly, also thanks to Frank ie's planning. We would like to encourage the members who didn't go this year to mark it on their calendars for next summer, because you sure missed a great time. We saw a lot of the friends we made last summer and made a lot of new friends. We also got to work on some neat crafts.

Our next youth club meeting was set on Sunday, August 9 at 3 p.m. It was supposed to be our installation of new officers' meeting. All members were asked to bring a new member to this meeting.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge No. 9, Snook wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother CHARLES J. SEBESTA, who passed away January 18, 1987.

Mr. Sebesta was born August 1, 1911 in Snook, Texas. A lifetime resident of Snook, he was a member of the Snook Brethren Church. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII. In 1968, he founded the Snook Bakery and was owner and operator of Sebesta Sales in Snook. He was postmaster of Snook for 34 years and served as president of Texas Branch of National League of Postmasters. He was a director at the Caldwell National Bank and First Bank of Snook. He was postmaster and member of Lee Scott Masonic Lodge #793 in Somerville, Past Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star, Somerville Chapter, Lodge No. 245 and also a member of SPJST Lodge No. 9, Snook. He was a charter member and president of the Snook Lions Club, a member of the Burleson County Historical Commission and charter member of the Burleson County Historical Society and past president of the Brazos Valley Chapter of the Texas Restaurant Association. He married Dolores Vance on September 3, 1938 in Bryan, Texas.

Mr. Sebesta is survived by his wife, Dolores Sebesta; daughter and son - in - law, Nancy and Lawrence Matus, Jr. of Bryan; daughter, Marilyn Sebesta of Wharton; son and daughter - in law, Charles J. and Jane Sebesta of Caldwell; also two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m.

January 20th from Snook Brethren Church with Rev. Henry E. Beseda

and Rev. Henry Stoval officiating.

Interment was in the Snook Cemetery.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Nove Kvety No. 35, Elk, Texas wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our lodge brother HERMAN W. MORRIS, age 83, who died May 17, 1987 at a Waco hospital.

Rosary was recited Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Wilkerson - Hatch Funeral Chapel in Waco, Texas.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 19 by Rev. Msgr.

Edward Rabroker officiating. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery in Waco, Texas.

Brother Morris is survived by his wife, Frances; and a sister, Ann Farek of Waco.

He was a retired machinist and hardware salesman.

Brother Morris became a member of our SPJST Fraternal Society in July 1926.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Texaska Orlice SPJST Lodge No. 13, Dime Box on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother ED SAMUEL E. PETERS, who passed away Wednesday, June 17, 1987 at Lee Memorial Hospital, at the age of 72.

Services were held Friday, June 19 at 2 p.m. at the Dime Box Brethren Church with Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating. Burial was at Saint John's Cemetery, Dime Box. Arrangements were under the direction of Phillip Luckey Funeral Home of Giddings.

Brother Ed Samuel Peters was born in Lee County, Texas on December 21, 1915 to Eula Bell Byrum and Milford Peters.

Survivors include his wife, Lydia (Marek) Peters of Dime Box; his mother, Eula Peters of Giddings; two brothers, Wayne Peters of Giddings and Ellis Peters of Houston; one sister, Dorothy Krenek of Giddings.

He was preceded in death by his father, Milford Peters; and one brother, Wilburn Peters.

All who knew Ed loved him and admired his quiet, friendly personality.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Expression Of Sympathy On behalf of the members of Lodge No. 9, Snook, we wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother STEVE T. VICTORICK. Brother Victorick, of Snook, died May 20, 1987. He was born May 22, 1915 in the New Tabor community and was a lifelong resident of Burleson County.

He was a member of Snook Brethren Church, attended Red Hollow School, was a farmer and rancher and worked in construction, was a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 9 in Snook, a member of Marion Mayes American Legion Post #455 in Somerville, a member of the Snook Volunteer Fire Department.

He was in the U.S. Army during World War II, during which he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal and Ribbon, American Campaign Medal and Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and Ribbon, 4 Bronze Service Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Bronze Star.

On February 20, 1946, he married Vlasta Adamek in Caldwell. He was preceded in death by his wife on November 11, 1967.

Mr. Victorick is survived by a daughter and son - in - law, Janis and Wallace Johns of Houston; son and daughter - in - law, Donnie and Janis Victorick of Snook; and son and daughter - in - law, David and Carol Victorick of Houston.

A prayer service was held at the Strickland Funeral Home and funeral services were held May 23 from Snook Brethren Church with Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Interment was in the Snook Cemetery.

Folding and presentation of the flag was by American Legion Post #455 of Somerville.

Features Harris County CHS To Meet The Harris County Czech Heritage Society will hold a genealogy workshop at the Crosby American Legion Hall on FM Rd. 2100, off Highway 90 toward Crosby. The workshop time will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on August 30, 1987.

There will be information on how to start a family research. Local family histories will be displayed. There will be a painting (mind you) of J.F. Petters home that was built in 1914 and the home is still there.

The Department of Health and Human Services publishes a free 65 - page booklet, "Depression: What We Know." *** Sulfites -- preservatives that were banned in 1986 from the nation's salad bars because as many as 500,000 people may have extreme physical reactions to them -- are also found in some local anesthetics used by dentists, such as Novocain or Xylocaine, the American Dental Association notes.

Sulfites enable dentists to store the drugs longer, but for those who are sensitive, the preservatives can cause severe reactions, including nausea and shock. To avoid problems, dentists should take careful health histories, and patients with known allergies should inform their dentists so a sulfite - free anesthetic can be substituted. ***
