agreement; you are encouraged to read the letter from Brother Klecka carefully. This is, of course, a very welcome idea; maybe they can teach us how to grow "sugar beets" and conserve our resources better and we can teach them more efficient farming, ranching and dairying practices and growing better crops, however, due to colder climatic conditions, we cannot do much with "cotton growing," can we? (This is written in a more humorous thought!)

We are hoping for very cordial, friendly, beneficial and favorable results to come out of this agreement. ***

Who watches your house when you travel? If the answer is "nobody," you might come home to face some unpleasant facts of life. Among them: Huge pet - boarding bills, possible vandalism and -- if you guessed wrong on the amount of water your plants needed -- drooping foliage. To avoid such headaches, more travelers are hiring house - sitters -- people who, for a fee, move into your home while you are gone and look after the place, but choosing a trustworthy house - sitter can be tricky.

You should hire a sitter you know will leave the house in tiptop shape. A college student or a retiree, who may have the time to keep a good eye on your place, might be an apt choice.

You also can check newspaper classified ads for house - sitters under "jobs wanted" -- if you take the time to check candidates carefully. But don't place a "house - sitter wanted" ad yourself -- it announces to the world that you will be away. Instead, you might consider looking in the Yellow Pages under categories such as "house - sitter services." House - sitting agencies listed there claim to screen their sitters carefully. These sitters are often insured and bonded -- you should insist on it -- to cover any damage they might cause. No matter how impressive a service sounds, call the Better Business Bureau and previous clients before committing yourself. When you are ready to do business, you will probably be asked to sign a contract spelling out exactly what the sitter will and won't do.

Sitters perform a wide variety of household tasks, including walking and feeding pets, watering plants and lawns, taking phone messages, bringing in mail and newspapers, waiting for repair technicians -- you name it. Some will care for children.

Others serve as companions for infirm adults. For a live - in sitter performing basic duties, expect to pay between $18 and $30 per day. Care for a child or an aged parent can run more than $70 a day. A "drop in" who visits briefly to check on things can cost as little as $8 daily. *** Food costs have shot up in recent months -- 14 percent since July of last year and 11 percent since January. The average cost for a market basket of 17 items was $29.38 in early July. July's food bill was pushed up by big price jumps for beef, pork and chicken. T bone steak, for example, has risen 19 percent since last July to $5.01 per pound. Some large cities were surveyed. ***

Minutes Of District VII Spring Meeting The spring meeting of District VII was held April 26, 1987 at Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi.

District VII President Brother Bob Bayer called the meeting to order at 1 p.m.

Lodge No. 79 President Brother Frank Veselka welcomed all present and wished everyone a pleasant and enjoyable afternoon.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed for departed members.

Roll call of lodges revealed that five were represented.

Second Vice President Monta Foster read the list of 50 - year members.

They are Florence Barmacka, Lillie Hruska and Lydia Regmund from Lodge 79; Frank Bolf, August Hosek, Alois Novak, Edwin Svoboda and Ed Zidek from Lodge 107; Emma Horak from Lodge 117, and Charlie Belicek from Lodge 168.

Minutes were read and approved after making a minor correction.

Sister Helen Pavelka, at this time, introduced SL Secretary - Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and wife Dorothy Mikeska.

DYC Maxine Pavliska made her report as follows: Youth Leaders and LITs Training Class -- June 5, 6, and 7; Camp -- June 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19; (save enough money from the Camping Fund - a trip to Astroworld); YAD -- July 26 at New Braunfels; District VII outing at H.E.B. August 27, 28, 29 and 30th; State YAD at Temple August 16th.

A get - acquainted game was played by everyone. Youth Club of Lodge No. 79 presented a program.

SL Secretary - Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and his wife Dorothy were present. He brought greetings from the other Supreme Lodge officers and talked about the good progress the SPJST has made and why it is important to increase our sales so that we grow and can support all of our fraternal work we do.

He said that the Supreme Lodge had set up a special committee to make plans and goals for the future and this was very important so that both our fraternal program and financial services will keep growing. District VII Director Thelma Hrncir is on this important committee.

He also said the SPJST insurance sales are very good because we now have modern and good products and because the SPJST is financially sound and investments are doing good.

District VII Director Thelma Hrncir recognized all sales representatives; Viola Cabla on Incentive Trip; three lap held personal computers were purchased for field representatives; Insurance Department -- Sales were $1,000,000 ahead of last year; Thirty - five million dollars more insurance in 1986 than in 1985; Invested Assets: 1982 - $31,900,00, 1986 - $46,900,00 (increase of 15 million).

Premium income: 1982 - $2,200,000, 1986 - $6,500,000.

(Increase of $4,300,000).

District VII will be on direct billing by end of May with total certificate count of 34,402. Eight percent refund to lodges for 1986 was $205,000. There were 132 scholarship applicants to date -- 77 freshmen and 55 undergraduates.

"Fraternalist of the Year:" Each lodge should submit the name of Fraternalist of the Year to the Supreme Lodge for selection.

Supreme Lodge adopted a motion to select a committee to get input from SL officers and begin working on the goals and objectives for the Society including a Mission statement and plans for obtaining its goals. Supreme Lodge felt the management and membership of any organization needs to have a clear image of its purposes, its direction and what it wants to iccomplish. Bylaws are good but too broad. This committee is charged with bringing a written plan back to the board which can be used as a guide by it and the individual officers for decision making. Committee consists of Brothers Jerry Prochazka, Ben F. Trcalek, and Sister Thelma Hrncir.

Treasurer Brother Ernest Jasek gave his report and it was accepted as given.

In his report, Rest Homes Director Eugene Hrncir stated that there is a waiting list in Needville. The next board meeting will be in Taylor on May 16th and May 17th; the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the home. Everyone is invited to attend.

Brother Emil Matula (Publication Committee) has no report to give; there was no meeting held in March.

The Audit Committee -- Dwayne Doeppenschmidt (chairman), Dominic Netek and Kathryn Marek found the District Youth Club books in good order. The audit was accepted.

Lodge 18, Elgin June Meeting Lodge Jan Zizka No, 18 held its June meeting with 22 members in attendance.

President Dale Kessel opened the meeting and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Gilbert Kubicek read the minutes of the May meeting; they were approved as read.

Various reports were given by the officers and chairpersons.

Matthew Hensen was voted in as a new member of the lodge.

Under new business, the Elgin Western Day Celebration was discussed.

On Saturday, July 25, the King of Swing will play at our hall; this being Western Day Weekend, we hope to have a nice crowd. Volunteers are needed to assist during the various events held that weekend.

After Brother Ervin Kovar won the door prize, the meeting was adjourned.

News From Lodge 32, Victoria The SPJST Czech Fest is over with now and everyone had a good time.

Instead of a July meeting, all members and a few guests who helped us were treated to a picnic in the park as a "thank you for working" together. The weather was very accommodating. At least 50 adults and youth participated. We thank our General Chairman, Franklin Elles,and his wife, Lois, for all the hard work they did weeks ahead of time to make certain that everything was doing well.

We thank all of our members and helpers who worked so hard for this organization to make it a success. We also thank everyone who donated to the auction and also those who bought our merchandise. Our auction was a success, as well as our other booths.

We had lots of kolache to eat.

We are all set to have another Czech Fest next year with Mrs. John (Frances) Motal as General Chairman.

We thank the Editor of the Vestnik for giving us the good publicity which we had through the Vestnik.

We were indeed happy to have Thelma Bartosh, curator of the LAM at Supreme Lodge in Temple, with us at the Czech Fest.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday night, August 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Citizens National Bank Meeting Room.

Our regular monthly meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz on July 12, 1987 at 3 p.m.

The pledge to the flag was led by youth members, Jana Breitkreutz and Jesika Tierce.

We had as a visitor, Paula Williams.

We hope she will come again.

There were no minutes read or treasurer's report given due to our secretary - treasurer being on vacation.

We hope she and her family had a nice time on the coast.

Youth Leader Louise Burney was called on to give her report,,She said that there were 11 members present for their youth meeting. She then gave a report on the District III YAD saying t;-..-v had 39 entries and named all the winners and participants from Lodge 35. Congratulations to you all! She also stated that they will have a cake walk August 1, a swim party and will go to Six Flags later and that most of the youth will attend camp at Val Verde.

Those having birthdays in July were Nathan Tierce, Jana Breitkreutz, Velma Clemons and Henry Breitkreutz. Happy Birthday to all of you.

We all wish a speedy recovery to Vernon Dulock who was accidentally hurt at work and is in the Hillcrest Hospital as of this report. We hope that all goes well and that he will soon get to go home.

With no further business, the meeting adjourned with a barbecue supper enjoyed by all.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Congratulations to Chairman Dora Lee Kopecky, President Rita Vanek and everyone who worked so hard to make the July 12 Family Day a great success at Lodge 40, El Campo Hillje.

The presence of SL Vice President Bernie Gebala, along with District Directors Sid Pokladnik (Dist. III), Willie E. Kohutek (Dist. II), and our own District VI Director Matt Vanek made it an especially happy event.

They even "sang for their supper" to the music of "A ja sam" played by our favorite local musicians, the Happy Home Boys -- Al Kutac, Frankie Vanek, Edwin Hrncir, "Cap" Kovar, and "Pancho" Barrera.

Everyone regretted that Jerry Polasek was unable to be with us.

Jerry is in Garden Villa Nursing Home, locally. He celebrated his 84th birthday on July 12th. He is a lifelong member of Lodge 40 and never missed any of its activities. The present modern lodge hall was built during his presidency back in the early 70s.

He says he would be happy to hear from old friends. His residence address is now 106 Del Norte Drive, El Campo, Texas 77437.

Everyone attending Lodge 40 Family Day signed a get well card to Brother Jerry and another one to Mary Baca, who is recovering from a stroke at the Czech Catholic Home, Route 3, Box 40, El Campo, Texas 77437.

Reverend Emil Vinklarek and I enjoyed visiting with Brother Pokladnik who shares something in common with me --- we are both native Minnesotans, raised near the mythical town of "Lake Woebegone" which has been in the news quite a bit for the past year and was the subject of a Number One Best Seller book nationally.

Lodge 47, Seaton Meeting Dear Brothers and Sisters: The regular lodge meeting was held on Sunday, July 5 at 2 p.m. with President Brother Jerry Pechal calling the meeting to order.

Flag Bearers Tommy Gibson and Tracy Klusacek brought in the flags and led the assembly in the pledge to the flag. We remained standing for a moment of silence for departed member Brother Edwin J. Chlapek, 86, who passed away Friday, June 19, 1987 at his home after a lengthy illness.

A member of our lodge for 38 years, he held positions of treasurer and board member and was very active when the present lodge hall was built by donating a sum of money and working at lodge functions for nothing. He was regular in attendance for lodge meetings until January, 1986 except when he was hospitalized. He shall be missed by lodge and family members. May he rest in eternal peace and may honor remain to his memory forever. In the Resolution of Sympathy previously printed, a brother, Joe V. Chlapek of Seaton, was omitted.

President Pechal welcomed everyone and recognized visitors Gertrude Kahlig, Ann Balusek, Milton and Jo Lee Schiller of Lodge 15, Buckholts. We enjoyed having you present and do come again.

Secretary Sister Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, sales representatives and trustees. The minutes of the May 31 lodge meeting were approved as read.

Correspondence included a thank you note from the Edwin J. Chlapek family for the wreath of red carnations, the five - dollar memorial fund and the food, memorials, cards and other acts of sympathy from lodge members; memorials from Brother Leon and Sister Vallie Zavodny, Brother Willie E. and Sister Adeline Kohutek in Brother Chlapek's memory; and an acknowledgement of a memorial to St. Francis Espicopal Church in Brother John E. Adams' memory.

New members accepted into the lodge were Gerald Lynn Poboril, Heath Earl Novosad, Heather Marie Novosad, Eldora Joan Janacek, Jason Andrew Sutter and Linda A. Schneider. Conversions were on Beth Marie Poboril, Dean P. Mikeska, Edwin J. Pechal, Judy D. Pechal, Rickie Earl Novosad, Calvin H. Skrabanek, Gerald J. Schneider, James R. Skrabanek, and Paul Emmit Willie. Fredrick Kaulfus transferred to Lodge 24. We value your choice of our lodge for membership and we hope you become active in lodge activities.

Welcome again.

On the sick list, we knew that Brothers Albert Hejl, Bill Kosarek and Leon Zavodny and Sisters Annie Jakubec and Ella Macek were recovering from surgery or illness. Get well soon and may better health be yours in coming days!

Officers' reports included the president's report with thanks expressed to all who brought items for the booths or auction, the workers, the musicians, all the Beseda dancers and to those who helped put up the tables and chairs after the picnic that Sunday night and to Brothers Charlie Sirney, Henry Janacek, Donald and Jerry Pechal who put everything where it belonged. Special thanks to Tom Gibson, Tommy and Laura Gibson for disassembling the booths and putting

up the blocks and loading the boards on the trailer Monday morning while we were busy with other matters.

Thanks to all for whatever you did.

The kitchen chairpersons for August are Brother Elmer Skrabanek and Sister Bertha Capps, thanks for volunteering.

The September meeting will be on Monday, August 31 at 7:30 p.m. due to the Beseda dancers going to the Westfest on September 6th (our regular meeting date).

The treasurer and financial secretary gave their respective monthly reports.

A special picnic report was given, also.

Board minutes were read by Sister Kohutek.

Sister Jo Lee Schiller invited everyone to the 50 - year pin celebration for Lodge 15 members on Sunday, July 19 at 1 p.m., also the date for District II YAD at Cyclone.

Brother Dan Wiley asked for the microphone and read his resignation as trustee and auditor, immediately. We accepted the resignation with regrets and Brother Elmer Skrabanek was elected to both positions. The Wileys are moving to Houston where he will be employed, therefore the traveling time and the Monday night meetings made this decision necessary. Thanks, Brother Dan, for serving as trustee for the last two years and three quarters of a year as auditor.

The chairpersons' reports were all good. Brother Tim Reese reported on the family social night that sandwiches and ice cream will be served.

Many are interested in learning the Taroky game and possibly have a tournament later in the year with some other lodges.

A work day will be held this Friday evening at 6 p.m. until all is done. Be present to help.

Youth Leader Sister Patsy Koslovsky gave her report that 29 members plus 3 guests were present.

She reported that 48 crafts are entered for YAD by Lodge 47 members, 8 in talent, and one for king. We were privileged to hear Michael Morris' speech. Good luck to all participants!

Sister Koslovsky announced that our member, Sister Claudette Reese, is the new State Youth Director. Good luck and we are proud of you. A basketball goal was installed by Brother Albert Koslovsky and son, David, for the use of the youth after their youth club meeting.

Birthday celebrants in July are Brothers Joe L. Sefcik, Elmer Skrabanek, Jerome Orsag, Charlie Sirney, Lonnie and Jimmy Schroeder and Willie E. Kohutek and Sister Kathy Pavlica. Wedding anniversaries will be observed by Brother Jerry and Sister Annie Chupik (58 years), and Brother Louis and Sister Mary Tepera (50 years) in the month of July.

Wishing all of you named "a very happy day" and may you enjoy good health for many years. The 77 members and four visitors enjoyed a lunch and 30 minutes of free drinks after adjournment of the meeting.

Lodge 66 Honors Fathers Lodge 66 held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, June 21 (Father's Day). President George Pauling called the meeting to order at 2:30 p.m. Flags were presented by Bill Warren and Larry Yates with Mike Warren leading everyone in the pledge.

All officers were present except Sister Darlene Engelke.

Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Gaidusek were recognized; they were celebrating their 40th anniversary.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Correspondence was read concerning the number of delegates who could attend the upcoming convention from our lodge, also a letter from SL President Howard Leshikar thanking our lodge for hosting the Toraky Tournament between our lodge and Lodge 92, Ft. Worth. He stated that this is a big step in preserving part of the Czech heritage.

Brother James Locke, board chairman, thanked several people who had helped with some work around the lodge. Sister Langlotz then read the minutes of the board meeting. She also showed everyone a plaque that was presented to our lodge in appreciation by the Veterans Administration for our contribution towards the purchase of a van.

The Entertainment Committee chairman gave her report. She stated that a Father's Day drawing would be held later in the meeting. Also, for the July meeting, members are asked to bring sandwiches with the committee furnishing potato chips.

Our Fraternal Committee reported that there were no funds available to give away this month.

Cheer Committee Chairlady Gloria Locke reported sending a sympathy card to Mrs. M.J. Pustejovsky and a get well card to Estelle Hykel.

Our youth leader reported that there was one new member, Nichole Pruitt.

She spoke about the youth attending YAD and camp. The youth took Father's Day gifts to the residents of the Bel'mead Nursing Home on June 20th. For a fund - raising project, the youth are selling tickets on a beautiful quilt. The drawing for this will be in September. Youth Club dues were also to be turned in.

Sister Libbie Parma reported that Donna Stanislav, West High School graduate, would be receiving her graduation gift from the Trust Fund.

She also reminded all youth present about the point system honors.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt asked all members to be thinking of someone to nominate for the "Fraternalist of the Year" award. This would be discussed more thoroughly at a later date.

New members accepted were William Cunningham, Mary E. Munas, Nichole D. Pruitt, Jonathan Spivey and Charles Stone.

Under old business, the Taroky Tournament between Lodge 66 and Lodge 92 was discussed. Our lodge took top honors and brought home the trophy, however, this trophy is a floating trophy. Any other lodge wishing to challenge Lodge 66 to a match and wins, will then move the trophy to their lodge. Each winner will have their lodge number and date won put on the trophy.

There was a total of 14 players from each side. Following are the results of the games held June 20: Lodge 66 total points -- 4,468 and Lodge 92 total points -- 3,937. Top four players according to points earned were: Joe

Jaska (66) -- 416, Dan Kubala ,(92) -398, Emil Hanus (66)-- 396, Bill Warren (66) -- 378.

High point team honors for Lodge 66 went to Brother Emil Hanus and Sister Dorothy Warren. For Lodge 92 the honors went to Brothers Mike Watkins and Ed Scaff.

A deck of Taroky cards was presented to the oldest player being Brother Emil Hanus, youngest player -- Kim Kubala, and low score -- Jo Ella Kubala.

Everyone really enjoyed the day and the games.

Several other topics were then discussed; among them was the idea of discontinuing dances on Friday nights.

After much discussion and a vote, it was decided to continue having Friday night dances.

President Pauling then asked that members who come to play bingo help put up the cards after the games. This would make it a lot faster to clean up.

He also asked Brother Gaidusek to have the Taroky trophy engraved with the necessary information.

Sister Mary Alice Langlotz spoke on behalf of Sister Jewell Warhol and asked all members to be saying prayers for her grandson, Jeff Warhol during July. They will be checking to see if he is in remission.

Sister Irene Mueller suggested that, from now on, all pictures taken of different events be placed in albums instead of picture frames. The albums could then be put into a cabinet where members could get them out and look through them at any time. A vote was taken and this is what will be done from now on.

Our door prize winner was Brother Charlie Mueller. "Father of the Year" was Weldon Galler and the runner - up was Jim Vrana.

The youth also presented the following fathers with a little something -- Jim Locke, ,Charlie Mueller, James Yates, George Shilling, Tommy Forbes, Ira Niswanger, Albert Jaska, Raymond Volcik, Arthur Langlotz, Louis Macha, Leslie Dunagan, James Pavlicek, Leo Klimitchek, George Pauling and Frank Kolnovec.

Before birthdays for the month of June were announced, our flags were retired.

June birthday honorees were Chris Pavlicek, Ashley Locke, Jeremy Forbes, Raymond Volcik, and Larry Yates.

Our meeting adjourned at 4 p.m.

80, Holland Held Meeting

Lodge

Dear Members: After being absent from the columns of the Vestnik for some two months or so, I thought I would write a few lines and mention what we are doing here at Holland.

We held our regular monthly meeting on Sunday, July 5th.

President Bohac called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. with all officers present, as is our custom to start the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of our country and the president asked the members to remain standing for a moment of silence to commemorate the passing away of our departed members.

Secretary Latham read the minutes and they were accepted as read.

Secretary Latham discussed details of the different type of bingo we play here at our hall once a month on Saturday nights. The crowd has been real good for this type of bingo.

The Moran Burns Scholarship Fund sponsored by SPJST Lodge 80 and the American Legion Post #526 of Holland awarded $1,000 scholarship to Connie Wolf of Holland, Texas.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Wolf of Holland; they are members of Lodge 80.

Sue Merchinney took out additional SPJST insurance.

Our former Vice President Adelle Horelica gave a report on a trip with the Road Runners into Canada and back. Her trip was very interesting as she reported.

You know folks, I always admired individuals who strive to work hard and achieve things. I must say we have a young member in our lodge who fits that description. He is young Frankie Pajestka, Jr. There are not many young men who will do what Frankie is doing here at our lodge; in the kitchen, he can flip over more hamburgers at our bingo games and other entertainments than 1 ever witnessed anyone doing. He is always willing to help and doesn't have to be told; he knows what to do. He is one of our callers at the bingo games. In my book, he is a real good "Young Fraternalist." My wife and 1 had gotten an invitation that Frankie and Risa are getting married real soon.

Best of everything!

After a rainy spell in our area, the crops are looking real good; milo and corn looks very promising and the cotton crop is in full bloom.

81, Needville Approves Donations Lodge

Dear Members: Our President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order on July 14 at 7 p.m.

We stood for the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag led by Vlasta Nowotny.

All officers answered the roll call.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes which were accepted as read.

Our lodge made money donations to our S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 11 in Needville, the Needville Fire Department Building Fund and to CCAP (Concerned Citizens Against Pollution).

Letters of correspondence were read

by Mary Werner from SL VP Brother Bernie Gebala in regard to Insurance and from SL FS Brother Jerry Mikulas on local dues.

President Charlie Matcek read a letter from Supreme Lodge, thanking Mary Werner for all the effort, time and work she gave that was necessary for our Lodge 81 to go on direct billing. We, the lodge members, also appreciate it and "thank you, Mary."

Willie Mae Kuykendall gave the financial report and Gilbert Walzel gave the Special Fund report. Both were accepted as read.

Louis Hanus, our S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes director, discussed and explained about the local dues.

Victor Werner reported his sister, Vlasta Holt, was on the sick list.

Last month's door prize winners were August Teykl and Victor Werner.

This month's winners were Louise Neuman and Mary Matcek.

After our meeting, Sister Mary Matcek entertained us with a very

delicious oatmeal cake and coffee for our social hour.

I shall add to this that our President Charlie Matcek and wife, Mary, are rejoicing over becoming very proud grandparents of a girl born to Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Edwin Matcek, Jr. of Brazoria, Texas on June 25, 1987. She weighed 7 pounds and 4 ounces and has been named Susan Michele Matcek. Congratulations! May God bless Susan with a long and healthy life and may she always be a great joy to all.

Our next meeting will be August 11 at 7 p.m.

Activities Of Lodge 92, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: We are already into the second half of 1987 now with aspirations for a good quality of conditions to finish the year. Our first lodge meeting of the latter half of the year was July 12 and was conducted by Vice President John Paprskar due to the absence of our president. Al Kercho sat in for John Paprskar. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Melissa Hubenak, Jolie Paprskar and Sheree Ingraham.

All officers' reports were approved.

Treasurer Rose Jaworski divulged in her report the acceptance of a gift of $100 from the SVPS Fire Insurance Lodge. We all express our appreciation.

Many familiar faces were missing; numerous members were out of town for a number of reasons. Bill, Norma and Steve McClendon were in Orlando, Florida attending a convention. Joe Paul and Sandra Hubenak accompanied their daughter, Staci, to New York where she was an entry in "Miss America Co - Ed Beauty Pageant." It is with pride we can announce that Staci was first runner - up in talent, chosen from a group of 95 entrants. Albert and Helen Kubala and friends were "horsing around" in Oklahoma. I didn't g et all the details, so ask Albert about the horse.

Martha Durham reported sending 11 birthday cards to senior citizen members and we sang "Happy Birthday" to Jolie Paprskar, the only July birthday person present. I'd like to use a line or two to send personal greetings to former Fort Worth members Joe and Evelyn Swick of Marlin, Texas. An Expression of Sympathy was mailed to the Ed Lackey family due to the death of his mother.

Youth Leader Gordon Hubenak recounted the list of our children's winning entries at the Burleson District Ill YAD and the winning projects were displayed for viewing. Carl Zich suggested that we give Gordon and wife Cheryl a round of applause and encouragement in the future for the interest shown in working with a relatively small group of children. We need more youth members so sign in any time.

We adjourned our adult meeting at 3:30 p.m. to start enjoying a fried catfish dinner that Dick and John Durham had been frying out of doors in the heat while we all sat in air - conditioned comfort. Now that's "Fraternal!"

Our August meeting will be Sunday, August 9, so plan on being present as we would "enjoy the pleasure of your company."

Lodge 139, Danbury Lodge 161, La I?arita Report

Meeting

Danbury Lodge 139 held a brief meeting on July 8th. After President Vincent Hechler called the meeting to order, Secretary Tommie Lostak read the minutes of our last meeting and Financial Secretary Helen Filipp and Treasurer Lonnie Lostak gave their reports .

In attendance was Tommie MacLane Lostak, one of our faithful young members who rarely misses a lodge meeting. He has been chosen as a member of the Danbury Little League All Star Team. Throughout the season he had served his team well in the position of shortstop and also excelled as a pitcher. Another of his interests is basketball, and in June he attended a week - long basketball camp in San Antonio. Tommie MacLane is the son of Lonnie and Eloise Lostak.

The social and fellowship hour following the meeting was enjoyed by all those present.

A very enjoyable fellowship meeting was held June 14, 1987 at Gateway Restaurant at 11:30- a.m. in Pleasanton, Texas. Sixteen members and four guests attended.

President Lloyd House called the meeting to order and asked all to stand to repeat the Pledge of Allegiance of )ur flag.

Sister Tillie Valchar was asked to give the secretary report. The minutes )f the last meeting were read and approved as read. Correspondence and old business was on the picnic in September, asking all to bring plans of place, etc. for the meeting in September.

"Fraternalist of the Year" selection followed. Tillie Valchar was nominated by Joe Juricek and seconded by Mary Wallace. The vote was approved and carried.

New Business -- Correspondence read by Sister Tillie Valchar, secretary, on SPJST information on companion list suggestion, followed by treasurer's report given by Sister Tillie Valchar, which was approved as read.

President Lloyd House welcomed the guests attending which were family and members.

A motion was made by Joe Juricek and seconded by Henry Mann to adjourn the meeting.

Table prayer was given by Joe Juricek, following a luncheon of choice which was enjoyed by all.

Door prizes were won by: 1st place -Henry Mann, 2nd -- Sandra McCann, 3rd -- Mary Wallace.

Lodge 155 Plans Picnic

Austin

The regular meeting of SPJST Lodge 155 was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Prasatik, 3000 Enfield Rd. at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 7th.

Honoring us with their presence was Brother Gene McBride from Supreme Lodge, and his wife, Frances and daughter, Amy. While we regret the rather small attendance, the presentation Brother McBride gave, via the SPJST - VCR video tape, was viewed with rapt attention. Questions regarding our new insurance plans were clearly explained and enough information in leaflets was left with us for more guidance.

This meeting was also the occasion of presentation of a 50 - year pin of one of our most active members, Georgia Mae Robertson. Brother McBride presented the pin to her and honoring her for her long years of membership in our Order. Georgia Mae's mother, Mrs. Matejek, is remembered by the many UT Czech students whom she helped at her residence while they attended the university.

We especially want to welcome a new member into our lodge, Daniel Neal Ward, 640 Shoalcreek Blvd., Austin.

A typical Czech dinner was served by the hostess, Alice Prasatik, and her daughter, Virginia,from Houston.

All attending seemed to enjoy the get - together and conversations between members.

The next social event will be at the Deer Creek Ranch Lake near Hamilton Pool -- a beautiful clear lake for swimming, shallow and deep, hosted by Doris and Clarence Boriski on Sunday afternoon, July 19th.

Lodge 183's monthly meeting will be history by the time this letter gets printed, and the members voted to skip the August meeting so we can talk about the September meeting to be held September 14 (second Monday) at 7 p.m. at the lodge hall. Come a little early and bring a covered dish, we eat and socialize before the meeting.

It is summertime, again, and times when a lot of people are on vacations.

Let's try to keep them safe and happy this summer.

A fellow passing through Juniper Junction was admiring Uncle Eph's farm. "Mighty pretty place you got here," he said. "Yep," said Uncle Eph. "But it's right unhandy being so far out of town. Feller's got to walk three miles to get a glass of whiskey."

"Why don't you get a jug of whiskey and keep it in the house?" asked the stranger. "Mister," Uncle Eph said sadly, "Whiskey don't keep."

I have been told that Dorothy Kral is in the Mansfield Hospital, and the members wish her a speedy recovery and also send our prayers.

175, Ft. Bend Meeting

Dear Members: At our second quarterly meeting held on June 9, 1987, Sister Helen Bryson reported she had finished all work relating to direct billing by the Supreme Lodge. We had a very informative discussion pertaining to what the Supreme Lodge will do and what will be expected or required of our local lodge officers.

There was some negative imput relating to direct billing. There is some feeling among the members which will harm the fraternal aspect of the local lodges. This should not affect Lodge 175 very much because we have had small participation by the members.

So, dear members, you will be getting your statement from the Supreme Lodge; may it be to your advantage.

The first game was a loss to Moody Printing of Fort Worth, 9 to 1. Paul Bartos had a good night going 1 for 1 with a triple and Tommy Kline knocked in Jim Zoller for our only run.

The next game was a win against Elmo's Wrecking, 6 to 5. There were many hitting stars including Donnie Lennox, Danny Yates, and Paul Bartos, all with 3 hits. Daryl Clements also had a triple and 2 RBIs. Lionel Schulz also added another pitching win to his record.

The next game was a win against Dallas Hawks, 6 to 1 on a six - hitter by Tommy Yates. He also went 2 - 3 with a double and run scored. Paul Bartos hit a homerun with 3 RBIs and longtime SPJST player Jerry Manak came in with a pinch hit single in his first at bat of the season. Jerry Manak has played and supported the team for many years and keeps track of the scorebook for all league games.

League game No. 4 was a 5 to 4 loss against Trans - Con the TAAF defending state champions. Kerry Goad went 2 - 4 with 1 RBI. Tommy Yates was 1 - 2 with a run and Donnie Lennox was 1 - 3 with a run. Randy Christian had a triple.

Our fifth league game against Club Charlie was rained out.

League game No. 6 was a big win against Casa View Baptist, 11 to 1.

Tommy Yates and Randy Furlowe combined on a 4 - hitter. SPJST blew open the game in the top of the 7th inning by scoring 7 runs. Kerry Goad was again the mainstay on offense. He was 2 - 4 with a triple 2 runs scored and 3 RBIs. Paul Bartos went 2 - 4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. Randy Furlowe came in and doubled in his only at bat to knock in 2 runs.

Birthday Victor Kunz

Lodge 187, Round Rock The barbecue pavilion and backyard of Lodge 187 were completed in time for the July 4th celebration held there from 12 noon until 1 a.m. Fireworks display was enjoyed by not only those in attendance but by the surrounding neighbors.

Director Victor Kunz is pictured standing behind the outdoor bar which he built the last week of June for the lodge.

The facility was built to accommodate not only the members but is also available for lease for private functions. There are four horseshoe pitching courts, two volleyball courts and six washer pitching courts for entertainment.

Sitting area around the grounds is available for over 400 people.

The Birthday Club Sisters met for their regular monthly meeting on July 8, 1987. We had a very good attendance even though the rains were coming in buckets.

President Rita Alexander opened the meeting with Rosalee Kostom reading the minutes of the previous meeting and were approved as read. We had no communications.

Our Sunshine Chairman Mrs. Kosut was unable to attend because her husband, Johnnie, had heart surgery several weeks ago and it seems he has some problems recovering. We certainly hope he will be well soon as we miss him. He is one of many who help us when we need extra help.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the financial report, which is always a good report.

We had a special occasion the end of June when Della and Joe Miksch celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Della is very active in our Birthday Club and famous for her Angel Food Cake. It makes me happy when people are fortunate enough to make 50 years of married life. Joe is

We have the following members and spouses on the sick list; Dub Pulley, husband of Gladys Pulley, who has been hospitalized, but is home now doing much better; Emma Jarisch lost her brother - in - law; Agnes Pederson is on the road to recovery; Louise Chudej has been quite ill; Marie Pokluda lost a nephew; also, we miss our devoted members, Lillian Finn, Emily Bily and Ima Lero, who always presents beautiful gifts to our gift tables. We hope to see everybody back in good health soon. Say a prayer for all our ailing members.

Vice President Edna Froehlich announced she cannot get cooks for August so we will have a covered dish with the club furnishing the meat.

The following sisters have a birthday in July: Emma Jarisch, Evelyn Mikolas, Louise Kadlecek, Sylvia Melia, Martha Baxter, Ann Svestka, Rosalee Kostom, Annie Baethe (98 years), Stella Bukowski and Della Miksch. "Happy Birthday" was sung to all. We adjourned at 12:00 noon.

Czech At The Victoria College

Study

The Victoria College will offer Beginning Czech for the first time this Fall. The class will meet the requirements for foreign language credit and is a transferable course.

The class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday from 7 to 9:15 p.m. and the Victoria Czech Heritage Society is giving limited scholarships for the Czech class. For more information about the scholarships, call Mrs. Ella Arnold at 512 - 573 - 2330.

Registration for the evening classes will be held between 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Student Union Building according to the following alphabetical schedule: Monday,„August 24 -- P - Z; Tuesday, August 25 -- A - G; Wednesday, August 26 -- H -0. RVOS State President Glen Hutka has been recently selected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT), the group spearheading the drive to establish the University Endowment. Nearly $200,000 has been raised thus far from a small group of interested Czech - Americans and the remainder is expected to be donated by descendants of Czech immigrants to Texas.

The RVOS was founded in 1901 in Ocker, Texas, in Bell County, Texas and presently has a membership of over 36,000.

People - To - People Farm Exchange Progam Agreement Signed A "People - to - People Farm Exchange" program between Rudy Klecka, Klub Kontinental, East Bernard, Texas 77435 and the Agricultural Cooperative J ZD Agrokominat of Slusovice, Czechoslovakia, was discussed and signed this past June to arrange an exchange of a group of farmers, ranchers, dairymen between the two countries.

The purpose of the exchange is to contribute to the broadening of understanding between the American and Cechosiovak people and to further development of mutually beneficial and friendly relations between the two countries.

The agreement between the two countries is the first such with the Slusovice collective farm to come to America, Dr. Zdenek Novak said. He is very interested in his group visiting Texas and looks forward for the first exchan ge to be a success.

The cooperative of Slusovice ranks among the top and most productive Cechosiovak agricultural enterprises and in some aspects among the top farming organizations. The cooperative's activities spread over 17 villages in the Gottwaidov district, totaling some 20,025 acres, with 13,741 acres in cultivated land. There are 3260 members permanently active, with 810 members of secondary education, and 326 with a university education and 17 rank among senior scientists with a candidate of science degree.

The American members to sign up for the program and participate in the full 12 - day collective program will have no cost upon arrival in Czechoslovakia such as hotel accommodations, 3 meals daily, drinks, transportation, entertainment and visa fees. The airfare from Houston/Prague and return will have to be paid by the person participating.

East Bernard will host the Czechoslovak farmers reciprocity during their stay in Texas. Local farms, ranches, schools, A&M University, NASA, Houston, Galveston and San Antonio will be visited.

The departure date to Czechoslovakia of the American farmers is set for September 15, 1987 and returning October 1, 1987. The exchange arrival of the Slusovice members will be in early November 1987 for 12 days.

Dear Editor Sefcik, Members and Friends: With day - to - day summer activities dominating our lives, it is with regret that I have not been able to submit this letter earlier, and that the harmonious and joyful second reunion of the Zastoupil - Houpy families will have

It is my special pleasure to record these memories in our Vestnik.

Our Houpy reunion began with the delayed arrival of Katherine and Bruno Tabisz due to bad weather on June 2 (3?). Their families arrived intermittently, thereafter, and it was chaotic bliss from then on. Of course, all the youngest craved entertainment, the younger needed entertainment, and only the young could withstand the entertainment! After a big sunburning - splash at "Wet - 'n - Wild" and rehearsals at John and Jeraldine Becan's, then came Saturday night ---.

We all danced until the end of Lodge No. 84 in Dallas. A special thanks to Cheri Petr for those last - minute arrangements for our group at the dance and thank you, John and Jerri, for, without the piano and tuning, Sunday might not have happened!

The weather was ideal on June 7 for those who traveled to Dallas. With so many members in one family, SPJST Lodge No. 84 provided such gracious accommodations, we cannot be other than grateful for its hospitality.

After the invocation by Rick Tabisz as the eldest grandchild of Jerry and Bessie Houpy, Bessie and Emil Petr and their helpers, once again, served a most delicious dinner to us. Thank you all so very much; we so appreciated your efforts in our behalf.

Following dinner, pictures were taken and brief introductions were made by the heads of each family represented. There are four surviving generations of the Venzl, Sr. and Katherina (Chmelikova) Zastoupil family. Of their seven children, Joe, Bessie Houpy, Mary Mach, Janie Barta, Venzel, Jr., and Frank are alive and doing well. Needless to say, there are a lot of us. We were pleased that Mary Jane (Barta) Birdsong and her family were able to come in from Marshall, Texas. Her husband, Carl, was unable to attend, however, their daughters Teresa, Janie, Debbie and her husband, Trace Bagley, and their children (Bobby, Brandon, Heather and Jennifer), and daughter, Carla and her husband, Jerry Tynes, and their children (Serena and Kyle) were able to attend. It was so good to see you, again!

New members and additions to the family since our last reunion include Frank Zastoupil, born to Patrick and Kris Zastoupil; David Charles Edwards, 111, son of Cynthia (Becan) and David Edwards; Jason Kerr, son of Deborah (Becan) and Bill Kerr; and James Wilson who recently married Sherri Wheat, daughter of Mary Jo (Zastoupil) Wheat. Welcome to the family!

Special family friends and guests introduced were Sid and Justine Pokladnik, Libby Tlamicha, Charlie and Mary Nemec, Milton and Albina Vrla, Mike and Irma Dean and June Warnecke and her son, Artie, who flew in from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to be with us. June is the daughter of the late Frank and Millie (Houpy) Kapernik. Also representing the Houpy side of the family were Henry and Lillian Houpy, half - brother Walter and Ellie Fredrich and their daughter, Ann, and her husband, Bill Adaska and their children. We were indeed honored by the presence of these special guests and will always cherish their kind words toward our family.

Following announcements of recent celebrations and accomplishments of various family members, a very entertaining program was presented by many of the talented young people in the family. Kris and Pat Zastoupil and

their nephew, Jason McBride,' began the program by playing a medley of selections on the piano, drums and saxaphone, respectively. Kris and Pat also performed two other lovely duets during the program. Stephanie Becan followed by singing "Nothing" from Chorus Line. Debbie (Becan) Kerr and Andrew Tabisz sang a duet, "Somewhere Out There," accompanied by Steven Tabisz on the piano. Steven then played and sang in Czech "Nikdy se nevrati pohadka mladi," accompanied by Gregory Houpy on the violin and Michael Houpy on the trumpet. Next, Julie Thomas performed a jazz dance routine followed by Bryan Becan who portrayed the Scarecrow's part and sang "If I Had A Brain" from The Wizard of Oz. Collette Kenney then did a cute tap dance routine and sang "Elvira," followed by Carolyn Tabisz who played a solo on her recorder.

Steven Tabisz, Laura (Tabisz) Janovsky and Terrie (Tabisz) Overstreet beautifully harmonized to "Could I Have This Dance?" After that, Michael Kenney played "The St. Louis Blues" and "Orange Blossom Special" for us on his harmonica.

Another skit was then tossed up into the air as the grandchildren of Bruno and Katherine Tabisz pantomimed "The Super Bowl Shuffle." One of the "players" ended up by getting "kicked out of the game" for poor sportmanship. Jessica really should have questioned that call ---. Priceless!

Then came a touching performance by Jackie (Becan) Kenney and her sister, Stephanie, portraying a reversal of roles as mother and daughter in "How Can I Ever Let You Go?" Debbie Kerr than sang "Memory" after which an instrumental rendition of "Cuckoo Waltz," one of Jerry Houpy's favorites when he had his orchestra, was played by Steven Tabisz and Michael and Gregory Houpy.

Members of the audience led by Jeraldine (Houpy) Becan then joined in a sing - a - long, "Pisnicka ceska" after which all the grandchildren of Jerry and Bessie Houpy sang in unison as a finale, "That's What Family's For." At the close of a most delightful program and day's events, JoAnn Zastoupil, daughter - in - law of the eldest Zastoupil, Joe, presented a most fitting Benediction as we each parted to go in our separate directions.

Once again, we were fortunate in having so many of such a large family together -- nearly 130! To those who made such special efforts to attend and participate, we extend our heartfelt thank you. To those who were not able to attend, "We missed you;" but, we hope it will be possible for us to be together again in the near future.

There are so many things to be grateful for during one's lifetime; family reunions surely should be one of those things.

NOTE: Brother and Sister Zastoupil, Sr. were charter members of Lodge Pokrok No. 84 where he served as one of its earliest presidents.

Their children and a majority of their grandchildren, great - grandchildren, and even great - great - grandchildren are members of Lodges 84 and 130 in Dallas.

Fourth Quarter Report Dear Members: This marks the end of the fourth quarter of the youth year. The average monthly attendance has increased from the third quarter by 21 youth.

It is most important that each and every person attend the monthly meetings. It takes everyone pulling together and doing their part to keep the Youth Department prospering.

If you are a contestant in anything, be sure that you register in time or are in line before registration time is over.

We are asking that everyone cooperate because the people in charge of registration must then move on to other jobs. (The schedule for this day follows this report.)

Please do not put your craft in the display area until after you register. If you have a large craft or several crafts to enter, get your relatives or friends to help you ahead of time. We will again have large signs designating the various craft areas.

Contestants in talent must be sure to bring their own props -- including their tapes, cassettes and the equipment on which to play these. This is very important because we will not be able to furnish the necessary equipment.

Contestants in talent are asked to announce their own selections, but NOT names, lodges or district.

Be sure to get your scrapbooks to your DYC or get them to the YAD during registration time.

We hope you and your club and your district are represented at this State YAD. Do not let them down. If you can't come, be sure to inform your DYC so that your alternate or second place winner may represent your district.

The directions to the Temple High School are as follows: Coming from the south on 1H35, take the Adams Avenue Exit, turn left at 31st Street.

The high school is located on your right. Coming from the north on IH35, take the Adams Avenue Exit, take a left on Adams, cross bridge and take left at 31st Street.

There are motels in the Temple area offering nice accommodations if you plan to stay overnight either before or after the State YAD. We are starting a little earlier this year and hope to be able to finish as soon as possible so that people needing to travel a distance will not be inconvenienced. You will also notice that the lunch hour overlaps some of the activities. This is regrettable, but there are many phases to cover and as stated, we hope to finish at a reasonable time.

Attention District II Members Important notice to all youth of District 11 who are planning to attend camp. Please bring a T - shirt (preferably white) to camp. It will be used as a craft project for you to stencil and paint. This was omitted from my camp letter last week. We are looking for a week of fun and excitement.

meeting on August 10 at Lodge No. 80 in Holland at 7:30 p.m. to plan and finalize the fall meeting and the third annual fun carnival which will be held at Lodge 187, Round Rock on September 20th. District VI SPJST Youth Tour Youth from Lodges 30 (Taiton), 32 (Victoria) and 40 (El Campo - Hilije) departed from El Campo on June 30 for a day of education and excitement in Galveston.

First stop was the Automobile Museum where the youth viewed some 100 antique cars on display. Next, the youth boarded The Colonel, an 800 passenger paddlewheel boat, and were taken on a cruise through the harbor after eating lunch.

Then, before shopping the Strand, everyone stopped off at La King's Confectionary to watch the process of old - fashioned candy making.

After a fun - filled day, the tour group arrived home in El Campo at approximately 9 p.m.

JULY 26, 1987 Lodge 185, New Braunfels will host our 1987 YAD at St. Mary's Church Annex. The lodge members and youth clubbers will serve sandwiches, drinks and desserts at noon.

Robstown Youth Club Of Lodge 117 Dear Readers, The Robstown Youth Club members are kept busy at all times.

In March, the regular meeting was held, a movie trip was taken, and Czech Festival was held at the Bayfront Plaza where the youth club had a booth.

The month of April was a busy month; regular meeting was held on the llth; we also decorated and filled 66 Easter baskets which were delivered on the 18th to the Westwood Manor Nursing Home. April 25, a trip was taken to the Hazel Bazemore Park by the Nueces River. The youth enjoyed the barbecued hot dogs, drinks, chips, etc.; also, always a favorite are the nature trails.

The May meeting was held on the 16th. At all of the meetings, the youth clubbers work the Vestnik projects; also a movie trip and eatout were held.

Election of officers for the year 1987 88 was held. The officers are: President -- Donald Marek, Vice President -- Alex Landin, Secretary -Jennifer Marek, Treasurer -- Darryl Foster, Reporter -- Inivet Ramirez.

Julie Siler had a birthday May 23rd.

June 6 a movie trip and eatout at Pizza Inn was taken. June 7 was a trip to see the Veit Nam Memorial and eatout at McDonald's. June 13th was our meeting and birthdays were celebrated by Erika Landin and Ben Hill.

Camp was held June 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 at Shawandosse at Lake Corpus Christi. The following attended camp: Jennifer Marek, Donald Marek, Inivet Ramirez, Eirka Landin, Alex Landin, Darryl Foster, Julie Siler, Clinton Siler, Sandra Garcia, Monica Eastwood, Venessa Saucedo nd

On June 29 several attended the Valentine Circus at Memorial Coliseum.

July started off with a bang; July 4th Parade, Fireworks at the Marina, and picnic at Cole Park. July 11 regular meeting; a trip to Corpus Christi Beach for swimming and picnic.

The most important date coming up is District YAD which will be held on July 26th at New Braunfels. Later another trip to New Braunfels on District VII outing will be taken August 27-30, trip at Leakey to HEB Camp; this is family outing. 4I'm hoping to see you all in Leakey on the Frio River.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club Dear Vestnik Readers, On June 30, 1987 District VI took their educational tour to Galveston.

Our Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club went and also Lodge 40, El Campo Hillje Youth Club and Lodge 32, Victoria.

We went to an antique automobile museum first. Then we went on the Colonel which is a big paddleboat that takes you on a tour around the harbor.

We also ate lunch on the boat.

Then we went to the candy factory on the Strand and watched them make candy. Later everyone went shopping on the Strand.

On the way home, we stopped at Wendy's to eat something for supper.

It was a very educational day and we also had a lot of fun.

Lodge 24, Cyclone YC Activities Dear Readers, The monthly meeting of Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club was held Tuesday, July 14, 1987 beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by President Janet Macek. Kindra and Michelle Mikeska led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

The roll was then called by Secretary Susan Holtman. Present were 20 members and 1 guest, Chad Bruggman and 3 adults. Martha Zavodny, Jane Bruggman and Nancy Posvar.

Treasurer Kristie Waits gave the treasurer's report and the balance is $592.62. Also, if you have not turned in your dues of $1, please do so before or at the next meeting to the treasurer.

Our Youth Leader Rose Harvell reported to us about the fall meeting which will be September 20 in Round Rock. She also told us more about camp.

Our social will be a swimming party on August 16 and 30 at the Walker Pool in Temple from 8 to 10 p.m. Each member will be responsible for bringing his or her own food. More information will be supplied at the next meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m. Door prizes were won by Michelle Mikeska and Michael Harvell.

Our ticket winner of the one - half beef was won by Melanie Zavodny.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, August 11 beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Dear Readers, Our last monthly meeting was held Friday, June 26, at 3:45 p.m. President Trudy Krenek called the monthly meeting to order. The Flag bearer for the month of June was Drew Davenport. He led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Jennifer Gold then called the roll. She then read the minutes of the May monthly meeting. They were approved as read. Treasurer Scott Whitsel then gave the treasurer's report.

Under old business, we decided that the Senior Group will go to the Schlitterbahn for their summer project. It will be in August, but no exact date has not been set, yet. The Junior Group will have to decide where they would like to go. Some of the ideas mentioned for the Juniors were going to Astroworld and also Waterworld.

Under new business, we decided to have our August monthly meeting at Lake Somerville. It would begin around 11 a.m. More information would be given at our next meeting.

The meeting was then adjourned by all and everyone got started on our community project.

This year we decided to "Adopt - a Highway." We got a sign and put it up on Farm Road 141; we have adopted 2 miles. Our picture was put in the Giddings Times and News in front of the sign. It was a neat experience. We got to wear bright orange vests when we picked up the litter. Mrs. Ford was waiting on the side of the road whenever we needed water. We will have to do this 3 times a year.

Afterward, we went to the SPJST Hall where we enjoyed a spaghetti supper provided by Mrs. Ford.

66 YC Honors Nursing Home Fathers

Dear Members, We had our youth club meeting June 22nd. There were 14 members present with 1 new member Nicole Diane Pruitt. Nicole, we are happy to have you.

We brought Father's Day gifts and honored the fathers of the lodge. We had a special gift for Arthur Langlotz, who does extra work for the youth club.

We are selling tickets on a Texas Star quilt. This is a money - making project for all the youth to be involved in.

Saturday, June 22 we went to the Bellmead Nursing Home and presented the fathers with a gift. I want to thank Patty Neslony, Bonnie Pruitt and Jim Locke for going with us.

I want to remind everyone of camp July 23 through 26th. I am excited about going and seeing old friends again.

The birthday cake was brought by Larry Yates.

At the meeting, Youth Leader Lora Mabry made the announcement that we would be going to the Astro game on August 20 at 1:35 p.m.

Scrapbook Committee Chairman Marlene Migl asked for any donations of pictures from anyone to help make the scrapbook better.

Our DYC Marie Stayton made final announcements on camp. She also informed everyone that Lee Pflughaupt was the member of District V to be up for the $1,000 merit scholarship.

We also held a bake sale that night during the weekly bingo games. We made $70.50 from the bake sale.

Our next meeting will be August 13 at 7 p.m., followed by our monthly bake sale.

Four SPJST youth members from Crockett recently attended a Leaders - in Training [LIT] camp at Camp Wagonwheel outside of Caldwell. L to R are Kathy Listiak, Sherry Michka, Scott Listiak, and Scott McKenney who were instructed on assisting and working with younger youth. The youth were instructed on story telling, dancing, games, song leading, crafts, flag ceremonies, and the importance of responsible leadership. These four youth will assist adult leaders this summer at Camp Val Verde near Waco for the SPJST Youth Camp.

Lodge 88, Houston YC Activities Dear Vestnik Readers, On July 11, 1987 we at Lodge 88 held a car wash from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the lodge. We washed cars for $3 and trucks or vans were $5. Things worked out better than we hoped; we made $135. We ended up staying until around 3:30 p.m. charging $5 also for cars.

After the car wash, pizza was delivered from Pizza Inn. The money we made from the car wash is going toward a bus to transport us to camp.

Sandra House McCann was graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from Texas A&M University. Her accumulative grade point average included a 4.0 for the 1987 spring semester. After 30 hours of accounting courses, Sandra was eligible to take the State Certified Public Accountant exam May 6 - 8, 1987.

While at Texas A&M, Sandra was a member of Freshman Agricultural Society as treasurer, Agricultural Economics Club, Saddle and Sirloin Club, collegiate 4 - H Club as historian for 2 years, intramural sports, Sigma Delta, Alpha Zeta as vice president, Phi Etta Sigma, and Alpha Lambda Delta. Shortly before graduation, she was accepted in the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi which honors only the top 10 percent of all senior college students. Sandra also received the Senior Merit Award which is given to the top 2 percent of all 1987 graduating agriculture students.

Attending Sandra's graduation were her husband, Cullen, and daughter, Misty. Also present were her parents, Lloyd and Bettie House of Charlotte; her grandmother, Tillie Valchar and friend, Mary Wallace of Pleasanton; her uncle and aunt, Bennie and Billie Valchar of New Berlin. Sandra's brother and sister - in - law, Richard and Cherri House of Uvalde, were among those present at the dinner honoring Sandra following graduation.

Sandra was a 1983 honor graduate of Charlotte High School. She is employed as an accountant with Tenneco Oil Company in Houston.

Sandra and her family are members of Lodge No. 161, La Parita.
