Lodge Dobry Zivot [Good Life] No. 180, Burleson hosted District III YAD, June 28th. When we arrived at 11:30 a.m., a very nice enthusiastic crowd of SPJST members had gathered, both youth and adult. After registering and visiting a while, a delicious and appetizing noon meal was served by the host lodge 'members. It was appreciated by all in attendance, and lodge President Louis Grochoske, his wife, Mydell, plus the other officers and committee members deserve our thanks.

Promptly at 1 p.m., under the direction of DYC Bessie Petr and Assistant Rosemary Banik, the program began and proceeded, without complications, to an end of a very enjoyable day. DYCs Bessie and Rosemary, youth leaders, assistants plus other interested individuals are to be commended for the efficient and fraternal manner they work with the youth, parents and members for their interest and attentiveness.

It was a pleasure to meet with so many of our longtime acquaintances, again. District III Director Pokladnik was busy with his duties at YAD in charge of the entire tabulating, and it was also with pleasure that we visited with District III Secretary Emma Ceska and her husband, Otis. Sister Ceska was elected District III secretary at this past spring meeting at Lodge No. 35 in Elk and your editor is certainly glad to see her become active in our SPJST, again. If our membership will remember the beginning of our SPJST Youth Program, in the 1950s, she was the first DYC (youth organizer in those days) of District III and it is mainly due to her influence that we have the Arts and Crafts part at our Youth Program; she was with the Waco Parks Department at that time and gave our SPJST the benefit of her experience. She has just retired after 30 plus years with that department, after stepping aside from SPJST for awhile due to her work load. Welcome back, Sister Emma!

After the YAD, Brother Otis and Sister Emma Ceska and yours truly spent a short while reminiscing about days gone by and the conversation wandered to the opening of the Lodge No. 66 Hall (of which they are members) in August 1955. Lodge No. 88 chartered a bus that day and came to help Lodge 66 celebrate. Brother Otis mentioned the happy sing - along we had of those good Czech songs with Brothers George Kacir, Frank Olexa, Frank Parma, etc. and how everyone enjoyed pitched in and built the hall.

He said that he and Brother Parma built the first buildings at the newly acquired 5 - acre site -- two outhouses!

Your editor mentioned that only one was needed for the men to build the hall and Sister Emma spoke up and stated that -- no, one was needed for ladies because: "We practically lived at the hall -- while the men nailed the boards, the ladies painted. We would come home from work, eat and go work at the hall; that's how it got built

by August 1955!"

Oh, where are those dedication oriented members in these days? Yes, they have dwindled in number, haven't they? Again, welcome back, Brother

It is a beautiful day -- but your children, as usual, are sprawled in front of the television set. The scene has become so common that health experts are worried: An estimated 40 percent of all youngsters between 5 and 8 show at least one risk factor for heart disease -- obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or physical inactivity. Half of all girls ages 6 to 17 and 30 percent of boys 6 to 12 cannot run a mile in less than 10 minutes. And the average grade schooler gets only 30 minutes of physical education a week, so it's really up to Mom and Dad to get their kids into shape. But how?

Many parents send their youngsters to exercise programs designed for kids.

At some centers, children ages 2 and one - half to 5 combine preschool academics with simple exercises. Other parents take their kids to child oriented fitness classes in which children as young as three months attend weekly classes at a reasonable cost per session. Many YMCAs offer "You and Me, Baby," a six - week course in which infants and adults work out together. However, be sure to check before putting money down.

What qualifications does the staff have? What is the condition of equipment? Is there any way to get a refund?

Of course, children don't have to enroll in exercise programs. Babies can get all of the exercise they need by normal crawling and climbing.

Encourage them to do what comes naturally. Rather than placing a safety gate at the bottom of stairs to keep a baby from falling, put the gate on the third step -- allowing the child to crawl up and down without serious injury.

Exercise kits for babies are available -some which comes with lightweight plastic barbells, a baby - balance beam and a videocassette, but such gadgets do little more than other baby toys.

For older children, real improvements in fitness may require changes in lifestyle for the whole family. In fitness, as in other matters, parents must usually set the standards.

Turn off the TV more often and encourage everybody to become more active every day if possible. Go for walks, ride bicycles, play soccer. Jog with the kids -- at their pace, not yours. Aerobic exercises -- those that condition the heart and lungs -- are fine, but don't let children overdo it Those under 14 should limit aerobics to three 30 - minute periods a week.

Children under 16 who want to lift weights should routinely heft no more than half of the maximum they can handle. Remember not to push too hard. If exercise isn't fun, your child won't keep it up.

After saying all this, why not put them in an SPJST Youth Club or some Sokol unit in Texas? ***

Under federal law, anybody hired after November 6, 1986, must present documented proof, such as a birth certificate, driver's license or alien registration card, that he or she has the right to work in the U.S. All workers -citizens or not -- must comply. But, reminds the American Civil Liberties Union, the law also forbids discrimination against foreigners. You cannot fire or refuse to hire someone because he or she looks or sounds foreign. And you cannot hire only citizens. If you need more information get a hold of the free booklet on "Immigration Reform Act: Employer Sanctions and Discrimination Prohibitions.''

Successful District III %TAD Dear Members Attendance was good at the SPJST District III YAD held on June 28, 1987 in Burleson. Members of Lodge No. 180 are to be commended for their efforts in hosting this important event.

Thanks to all the youth of the participating lodges, to Sister Bessie Petr and her assistants, to the local lodge youth leaders and to the parents for all their time, work, efforts and talent in making this day the success that it was. The talent, the crafts, the king and queen contestants all were great. Our congratulations to all the winners and to each youth who contributed so much by participating.

We can all be proud of the leadership of the SPJST who makes this opportunity available to our youth today.

The programs were most enjoyable and the YAD afforded us an opportunity to re - new acquaintances and to meet new friends among our membership.

4, Hallettsville Meeting

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, June 14, 1987 at the Grant Building. President Annie Vahalik called the meeting to order, followed by the pledge to the flag led by Janell Chudej.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes from the last meeting which were approved. The usual reports by officers followed.

Correspondence was read.

Under old business, our annual Family Day was discussed. Family Day will be held Sunday, August 23 at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville with a fried chicken dinner with trimmings to be served at noon as usual. A Surprise Walk, Domino Tournament, and a money - making project for the Youth Club are also planned. Final plans will be made at the July meeting.

It was also decided to have our August meeting on our regular meeting date, the second Sunday of the month at the Grant Building beginning at 2 p.m.; also July, August and September birthdays will be honored that day.

Members were reminded of the Czech Fest sponsored by Victoria Lodge on Sunday, June 28 at the Victoria Community Center.

The meeting adjourned.

Refreshments and lunch were served and enjoyed. A special Father's Day door prize was won by August Neubauer and the door prize went to Evelyn Holy.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, July 12 at the Grant Building beginning at 2 p.m. Refreshments and lunch will be served as usual.

Dear Members: The quarterly meeting of Lodge Moravia No. 23 was held Tuesday, June 16th with eleven members present.

President Albert Olsovsky called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed for the departed members.

The secretary read the minutes of our previous meeting and the treasurer's report was given.

The officers' orientation in Belton was discussed.

Then it was reported that we gained six new members.

At the previous meeting, a discussion was held on ways to make money for the lodge so the lodge hall can be painted. A garage sale was suggested, but was tabled until our next meeting which will be Tuesday, September 15. We encourage all members to be present so we can decide on this matter and are expecting your cooperation. We will be looking for you at our September 15 meeting.

We will read your letters to her just like she was doing for all of the grandmas and grandpas at the Hillje utulna (rest home) where she would go every day until she became ill. She found great joy in being able to read, in Czech, to others who could not read anymore because of their age or sickness.

Mary was born February 15, 1905 in the community of Stary Hamry, located in the county of Frydek Mistek and the state of Moravia in Czechoslovakia. Her parents were Joe Chovanec and the former Barbara Matejka. They moved to the United States to the Corn Hill, Texas community when she was two years old. They later moved to Granger, Texas. Mary has lived in El Campo since 1918.

She has always been active in charitable work and is a founder of the Czech - Catholic Home for Aged in Hillje near El Campo. She is a lifetime member of its Board of Directors.

Among the many honors she has received for her humanitarian projects is the coveted Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal from the Catholic Church. She is a past recipient of the Outstanding El Campo Citizen of the Year awarded by the Chamber of Commerce and has similarly received honors from the local posts of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars for her assistance to military veterans. Several years ago, she was also honored at the State Convention of Nursing Homes for her work in establishing the Hillje utulna.

Please pray for her complete recovery so that she can return to her active work in the community and, especially, among our people of Czech heritage. She has done so much to bring honor in Texas to those who speak Czech. Mary also has brought great joy to so many with her jovial ways and many acts of kindness.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Most of you know Mary Baca, a member of Lodge 40 El Campo Hillje. We regret to report that she is in the hospital in El Campo after suffering a stroke Thursday, June 16 at her home.

I am happy to report, however, that she is recovering and making slow, but steady improvement. Mary started to talk a little and is no longer in a coma.

I know that she would be very happy to hear from all of her old friends.

The annual Family Day social will be held on July 12, 1987 at the Lodge Hall, Hillje, Texas. Happy hour and social will start at 3 p.m.

Fried chicken and drinks will be furnished by the lodge. Members are asked to bring a covered dish of a vegetable, a salad, a sweet or a pastry.

There will be live music for entertainment from 3 to 5 p.m., also bring your cards and dominoes.

Fifty - year pins will be given to Marie Chovanec and Charlene Nevill.

Lodge 87, Temple To Meet SPJST Lodge No. 87 met Friday evening, June 12 at 7:30 p.m. with President Ladis Navratil presiding.

The meeting was called to order.

Flag Bearer Lad Zatopek led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. A silent tribute was paid to deceased members.

Old and new business were discussed and various reports were also given.

Get well wishes are extended to Vlasta Valchar and Georgia Navratil and all who are convalescing.

Millie Jez was a guest for the evening.

The next meeting will be July 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Watermelon will be served during the social hour.

A special thanks to Frank Machalek for the time and effort he's given to help maintain the lodge hall property and grounds; also to George Schiller.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Brother Edward A. Broz passed away on Monday, June 22, 1987 at the age of 54 years. Survivors include sons, Mark A. Broz and Craig S. Broz, both of Houston; daughter, Cheryl D. Broz of Houston; brothers, John R. Broz and Frank Broz, both of Houston; sister, Marie Buzek of Pasadena; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, June 26 at Heights Funeral Home Chapel with interment at Houston National Cemetery. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Brother Broz.

The benefit dance to be sponsored by the Men's Club will be held Friday, July 10th. Proce$ds will benefit the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas and music will be provided by the Central Texas Sounds. Donations are $5 per person.

The Lodge 88 swimming pool is open every day from 1 to 8 p.m.

Admission is only $1 per member and $3 per guest. Members must accompany their swimming pool guests at all times.

All members are urged to attend the monthly lodge meeting to be held Monday, July 13 at 7:30 p.m.

Remember that Social Night is held every Thursday evening. The early bird game begins at 7:15 p.m. and the regular games start at 7:45 p.m. The Blue Room is open during Social Night to serve your favorite refreshments.

We had 35 members and 4 guests who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. All remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of our departed Brother Eddie Erickson.

President Dennis Hermis was absent due to District V YAD at Pasadena, scheduled this same date.

The secretary held roll call of officers and we showed absent Youth Leader Elizabeth Hermis and Flag Bearer John Buri. These members were also absent due to District V YAD at Pasadena where they were in attendance.

Then Secretary Alice Jochen read the minutes from our previous meeting which stood approved as read.

Under correspondence, Secretary Alice Jochen. read an acknowledgement of sympathy card from Mrs. Adolf Pavlicek.

All officers' reports were read.

New applicants were Lindsey Anlinger (new applicant) and additional insurance consisted of Julie Ann Chupik, Eric J. Chupik, Daniel Schimcek, Gary A. Behrens, Craig Michael Behrens, Donald Kieschnick, Gregory L. Blahuta, James M. Blahuta and Wanda Sue Wilson. Sales Representatives were Sidon Tumis (7), Robert Kieschnick (1), and Evelyn Mikeska (2).

Brother Henry Hermis made a motion to accept the new applicants.

This motion was seconded by Ruth Kieschnick. All members were for; none against.

The capsule attendance prize for $50 went unclaimed due to the absence of Sharon K. Merryman. Next month's prize goes to $60. Come to this meeting and you may be the winner!

The $5 attendance prize for the oldest member present went to Maggie Cernuch, 74 years old.

Door prizes went to H.J. Ognoski, Terry Kieschnick, Lorraine Motl and Gus Molensky.

The meeting adjourned at 2:35 p.m.

All members and guests enjoyed a meal of sausage, sauerkraut, and all the trimmings, also refreshments. This was prepared and served by our Kitchen Manager Rosie Tumis. Thank you, Rosie, for the delicious treats.

Travelers' News: The Tumises and the Schleiders have been traveling again. Sister Rosie, along with daughter, Pat Schleider and husband, Bob, and Bob's mom, Mae Schleider, has hit the glittery cities of Reno and Lake Tahoe. They reported a funfilled week of sight seeing, attending cocktail shows and hitting those onearmed bandits. Welcome back home, travelers!

Lodge 179, Warrenton Plans Activities Lodge 179 met for the regular monthly meeting June 11, 1987 at 8 p.m. in the Guest Room at Warrenton Grocery. President Bergmann opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the secretary's report. The financial report was given and the treasurer gave his report. All reports were approved as read.

There were four new members brought in to our lodge. They are Matt and Greg LittleJohn, Raylon Zwernman and Dustin Wied.

In new business, the lodge decided to not have a feast, however, we will still have a variety shoot at Harvey's Place in Waideck. The date for the shoot will be decided at another meeting.

A new Food Committee was appointed as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Kasse, Mr. and Mrs. Peters and Mike Flinn. The committee advised that for the next meeting on July 9 at 8 p.m. we will have baked ham and members may bring a side dish or dessert. The meeting was then adjourned.

Our SPJST Lodge No. 186 in Caldwell, Texas is accepting donations to our Cemetery Fund. We are now trying to keep our cemetery looking very nice, but it takes money from all people who have loved ones buried there to keep it maintained. This is the only means we have for paying for maintenance.

Circle Of Lodge 92, Ft. Worth Ladies'

Dear Members and Friends: Our June meeting was called to order by President Dona Hubenak with 47 members present. She welcomed our new member, Oletha Cook and guest, Ida Garret.

Our secretary read the minutes from the May Meeting. They were approved as read. She then read a thank you card from Christine Zich on behalf of Lodge 92 for donations for the stove and light over the past presidents' pictures from the Circle. Thank you cards were also read from Mac McMillen and Marie Tesar.

Sunshine Chairman Lillie McMillen reported that Agnes Merlick is in the hospital. We wish her a speedy recovery. We were sorry to hear that Minnie Ruzicka's home had been robbed while she was visiting in San Antonio with her children.

We will not have a regular meeting July 14, but we need to be there early so we will be ready to welcome the Dallas Circle of Czech Women when they get there.

All of you members bring the dish you are supposed to as planned in our last meeting and those of you who weren't there just bring some pastries.

The Circle is furnishing the meat and bread.

Clara Cohen told about the program =hat is planned and each member is to gyring two wrapped gifts. If, for some -eason, you don't wish to participate in this, you bring one gift. It will be fun.

Hostesses for this meeting will be Evelyn Spacek, Clara Marchioni, Maggie Konecny and Frances Simmank and, hopefully, others will help if needed.

Joyce Tesar announced there will be a dance at Lodge 92 July 25 with Jodie Mikula furnishing the music and also a dance August 23 with Don Peachey playing.

The hostesses for August will be Florence Greer, Imogene Reaves, Lydia Pollacek and Mary Pollacek.

The door prize was won by Imogene Reaves and she will donate the prize for the August meeting.

We have some traveling members and they are Maria Prill who left for Germany June 22 to visit relatives and friends, Frances and Robert Blake are going to San Francisco, then on to Vancouver, Canada and, when they get back, they will go on a 17 - day bus tour.

Back from their trip are Ann and William Leskar after visiting their daughter, Pat and son - in - law, Steve Hungerpiller in South Carolina, they stayed in their condominium and also did some fishing and had a wonderful time.

Congratulations to Flora Koci's granddaughter who graduated with honors and congratulations to all the graduates.

Congratulations are also in order to Julia and Ernie Dueser who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary July 4th.

Dona Hubenak read an article from the Grandview paper about Betty Billington who has been a member of the Homemakers Conservation Club for 8 years; during that time she has assumed leadership positions at the club county, district and state levels.

Presently she is serving as District 4 director of Texas Extension of Homemakers Association and has received the "Homemaker of the Year" award. Congratulations, Betty!

Entering thin gs that members have experienced and share with the Circle was an interesting ghost story by Mary Cihacek, and Helen Paprskar told of some very funny things she experienced while growing up.

The two ladies to share their experiences in August meeting will be Bennie Bartek and Clara Cohen.

District II YAD July 19th The District II YAD will be held July 19 at SPJST Lodge No. 24 in Cyclone beginning at 1 :45 p.m, This includes Beseda dancing, individual talent, group talent for Juniors and Teens. Thirty entries have been received in talent and over 150 craft entries and the royalty competition consists of 6 queen contestants and 3 king contestants who will compete for state competition.

All members and friends, Supreme Lodge officers, attorney, editor and their families are invited to attend and give our youth their support by being in attendance for these contests.

Registration will be at 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Assembly called to order at 1 :45 p.m.

Pledge of Allegiance Welcome by local Lodge 24 President Barbara Macek Response by District li President D.I. Bohac Craft judging and Beseda competition is planned to start at 1 :SO p.m.

Individual talent and group talent to follow. Point awards by the Supreme Lodge.

There will be a one - hour break for the afternoon meal and to view the crafts. This will be about 4:45 p.m.

Then the royalty contests will begin followed by announcements of craft and talent winners and awards.

Introduce talent judges and royalty competition and finally the crowning of the 1987 king and queen.

We anticipate to finish at about 7:30 p.m.

Once again, we invite you to be with us and enjoy the talent, craft and royalty speeches presented by our youth.

Wednesday, July 8, 1987--VESTNiK/7 Lodge 24, Cyclone will have hamburgers available for the noon meal beginning at about 11:30 a.m. until about 12:30 p.m.

The delicious evening meal will consist of a spaghetti dish, salad, garlic bread and dessert for a price of $2.50.

Everyone is invited to eat with Lodge 24.

All camp applications and entries are due now and chaperone applications, also. Camp will start Monday, July 27 at 10:30 a.m. and the Juniors are scheduled to go first. The Juniors will leave Thursday morning, July 30 at about 10:30 at which time the teens will arrive and they will leave Sunday, morning, August 2 at about 10:30 a.m. Complete details on camp will be next week.

Also let's all plan to reserve the date of September 20 to attend our third annual Fun Carnival and Fall Distict II meeting at Lodge No. 187, Round Rock. More details, later.

Lodge 13 Dime Box YC Adopt-A-Highway The last monthly meeting of the Dime Box Youth Club was held Friday, June 26th. Everyone met at St. Joseph's Church at 3:45 p.m. We then took a picture in front of the "Adopt A - Highway" sign. After we took the picture, we started our meeting. All of our new officers took over at this meeting.

President Trudy Krenek called the meeting to order and Drew Davenport led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. The roll was called and minutes from our last meeting were then read by Secretary Jennifer Gold.

The minutes were accepted as read.

Treasurer Scott Whitsel then read his report.

Under old business, it was decided that the senior age group, age twelve and over, would go to the Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels. Mrs. Ford, our youth leader and her assistant, Ladonna Ford, will check into places for the Junior age group.

The meeting was then adjourned.

After the meeting, we all picked trash for our Adopt - A - Highway program. After we finished picking up trash, we all ate a spaghetti supper that was prepared by Doris Ford, our youth leader, and her husband, Ricky Ford.

It was delicious.

The door prizes were won by Lindsey Wiederhold, Jamie Cottrell and Wendy Reeves.

Dear Vestnik Readers, This is a very late but much - needed report about District VII annual youth meeting. This meeting was held April 26, 1987 at Sokol Hall in Corpus Christi. The youth program presented involved all members in attendance, both adult and youth.

We elected new officers. The officers for the years 1987 - 88 are President -- Cheryl Majek, Vice President -- Jackie Burleson, Secretary -- Christy Majek, Treasurer -- Tammy Rambo, and Reporter -- Charlie Majek.

District VII also had their annual camp June 15th through June 19th.

This year it was held at Camp Shawandosse on Lake Corpus Christi.

We swam, went boat riding, went to the beach and had dances every night.

We did many enjoyable things and we had a great time.

84, Dallas Youth June Meeting Lodge

The Junior Youth Club of Lodge No. 84 Dallas held their monthly meeting on Monday, June 15, 1987 at 8:05 p.m. Amber Ondrusek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Present were 11 members and 4 adults.

We discussed Youth Achievement Day (YAD) in Burleson on June 28 hoping that everyone is finishing up on their projects. The month of July, the Juniors dedicated it to the Teens. The Teens are planning their annual Bake Sale on July 3rd at Rudolph's Meat Market at 8 a.m. until all pastries are sold. They will also be having their spaghetti supper and game night on July 8 at 7 p.m. at the lodge. Bring an empty stomach and some game prizes to help raise money for the Teen Youth Activities. The crowning of the Teen queen and king will be held on Saturday, July 18, 1987 at the lodge at 10 p.m. Bring your dancing shoes at 8:30 p.m. for a dance with music by Czech Harvesters.

Beseda practices for the District YAD was scheduled for Tuesday, June 23 at 7 p.m. and Friday, June 26 at 10 a.m. Camp is coming up on July 23 26 at Camp Val Verde. I hope all the forms have already been received by DYC Bessie Petr. Sorry if you did not get your forms in because we will miss you at camp.

Expression Of Sympathy On behalf of the officers and members of Lodge No. 39, Bryan, Texas wishes to express our deepest sympathy to the family of LENA REGMUND, 93, of Bryan, who died Saturday morning at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with the Rev. John McCaffrey officiating. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Bryan. A rosary was recited at Hillier Funeral Chapel on Monday.

Mrs. Regmund was born on the Fridel family farm in Kurten and lived in Brazos County, Texas all her life.

She was probably delivered by her paternal grandmother, who was a midwife.

She attended Kurten schools and what later became San Marcos State University. At the age of 16, she was already a teacher, riding horseback to her charges in Snook and in surrounding communities. She was also a basketball coach in Snook.

Mrs. Regmund married in her early 20s and became a farmer's wife in Smetana. There were no paved highways through Smetana then, only mud roads, and most of her activities were confined to that community for many years.

After she quit teaching, she helped with most of the Smetana school programs, was the chairman of March of Dimes for the Smetana community, a trustee for the Smetana school district, and a 4 - H leader, all for several years.

Lena Regmund administered to the sick, sewed and baked for family and neighbors, and served her community in numerous ways. She still baked her bread and kolaches and gardened, until the week before she died. Mrs. Regmund mixed her own concoctions, which she administered to sick neighbors. She spent many hours sitting with the sick.

She also took time out to call square dances at community gatherings; participated in 4 - H club campouts, and had numerous canned goods entries at the county fair booths at the American Legion.

Mrs. Regmund was a seamstress and made clothes for herself, her family and for the neighbors, as well as costumes for children for years in school programs.

She was a 50 - year member of SPJST Lodge No. 39 and the St. Joseph Holy Rosary Society, and a lifelong member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Victoria LeNoir and Helen Cahill.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Dorothy) Biggs of Bryan; a brother, Frank Fridel of Kurten; six sisters, Josephine Fridel, Frances Fridel, Bernadette Fridel, all of Kurten, and Ann Fridel, Mary Fridel and Verna Hahn, all of Bryan; six grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

May our departed sister rest in eternal peace.

Features Brother Shimek Honored Posthumously Sister Edna Shimek of Schulenburg received a certificate signed by the President, honoring the memory of her husband, Johnnie Shimek Jr., who passed away April 22nd. The certificate states "The United States of America honors the memory of Johnnie Shimek Jr. This certificate is awarded by a grateful nation in recognition of devoted and selfless consecration to the service of our country in the Armed Forces of the

United States. (Signed) Ronald Reagan, President of the United States."

During World War II, Brother Shimek was ranked Tech - 4 Sergeant.

He served in North Africa; Sicily, Italy; Salerno to Cassino and Cassino to the Alps with the 91st Cavalry Rcn. Alert Squadron, and was attached with the Fifth U.S. Army, 10th Mountain Division and 88th Division. For his bravery, he received decorations and citations of the American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal,, and the EAME Campaign Medal with 6 Bronze Stars.

We regret the death of Edward Petrusek. He will be missed by our staff and other residents.

The senior citizen luncheons held at the Immanuel United Church of Christ were attended by Annie Stavinoha and Helen Valcik. The senior citizen social held at St. Michael's Catholic Church was attended and enjoyed by Annie Stavinoha, Gladys Hix and Helen Valcik.

Monday afternoons, June 1 and 15, Betty Seiler came from the library to show movies. The residents enjoyed the movies and popcorn.

The KCs came to play bingo Tuesday afternoons, June 9 and 23, with the residents. The residents enjoyed the bingo and visiting with the ones present.

Thursday morning, June 18, the Assembly of God Church women from Rosenberg came to sing with the residents and visited. In the afternoon, Garland Hurtye and Mary Ann Goffinet with the Fort Bend Humane Society brought dogs for therapy for the residents.

The Needville First Baptist women visited and had Bible study Tuesdays, June 23 and 30, to help Kitty Smith while she will be absent this summer.

Wednesday evening, June 25, Larry Ognoski, George Lolley and Fred Gerke provided music and singing for the residents. Everyone had a great time. Families and friends are invited to attend.

Of Interest Perhaps you have finally found the house of your dreams, but you still have to sell your old residence. What if you cannot do it by the time you close on the new one? This type of loan permits you to borrow against the equity in your current house for a short period -- usually 30 to 120 days -to finance the new one. As tempting as this strategy may seem, it can be quite tricky, so take a close look before acting.

Such loans are not very popular with lenders, who complain about a lot of paper work for a short - term loan.

Still, they do make such loans to please valued customers or to get the lone term mortgage for the new abode. To protect themselves, most lenders require you to have a signed contract to sell your present home, ideally one with no contingencies, before they will make the loan. You will usually be charged 1 or 2 percentage points above prime -- now 8.25 percent -- plus at least 1 point, or 1 percent of the loan.
