Million Dollar Pins Presented In District VI

SPJST State Field Representatives At Work For You The SPJST presently has three state field representatives strategically located around the state to furnish immediate, professional assistance to our all volunteer sales force. These field people are available to our sales force "around the clock" to assist with technical questions our membership may have regarding their insurance coverage.

State Field Manager Gene McBride oversees this operation, and he personally assists the sales representatives in Districts 1, 11 ana IV. He is located at the Home Office in Temple. District Ill sales representatives are assisted by Norma Alford. In District V, Helen Hegwood offers assistance to sales representatives and Jerome Hlavaty does the same in Districts VI and VII. This method of help was instituted about a year ago and has proven quite successful.

The SPJST heritage film, sponsored by the SPJST, "Czechs Within A Texas Checkerboard" will air on the Huntsville Cable System - Channel 7 July 21st at 9 a.m.

Correction: In the April 29th issue of the Vestnik concerning the District VI Million Dollar sales representatives for its district, one of the individuals was incorrectly identified. The name William Marek should have read Melvin Marek.

ATTENTION DISTRICT III MEMBERS! In this issue Sister Bessie Petr has the complete lineup of the District III Youth Achievement Day scheduled for June 28th hosted by Lodge 180 in Burleson. Everyone should take notice of the entry (entries) registration so each entrant with their chaperone will have ample time to relax, eat, and get dressed for talent competition. The host lodge members are preparing a delicious noon meal which will be convenient for those in attendance. Let us all give the district youngsters the support they deserve and see for yourself how artistic and talented our youth of today are.

The other district youth achievement days are forthcoming and they are listed in the Youth Section Calendar.

We suggest you set aside the date in your respective district and attend their entertainment as well as craft exhibition. *** Newspapers these days carry many help - wanted advertisements since summer is the busiest time of the year for job - hopping. By their very nature, classified ads are brief and often cryptic. When you scan them, it can be hard to read between the lines. What kind of person is the employer really seeking? Which ad should you pick for a response? How do you answer it to get the employer's attention?

First, you should know which classifieds carry the kind of job you want. Many professional - level positions are not listed in newspapers but in professional and trade journals found in many public libraries.

Positions near the top of the corporate ladder often are not advertised at all.

They are filled from within, by word of mouth or by executive recruiters. As you read through the classifieds -- both newspaper and magazine -- be skeptical. Blind ads, in particular, can be risky; you could be applying for a job at your own company. Others are placed by employment agencies or recruiters who may charge a fee to help you find a job.

Apply immediately if you see an intriguing possibility -- certainly within a week. Of course, the fastest response is by phone, but if the ad specifies "no phone calls, please," it is probably wise to write. If you call, be ready to say then and there why you are the best candidate. And do not be bashful about asking for an interview. The call could show an aggressiveness and interest that might set you apart. You will be asked at some point to send a resume. When you do, always include a covering letter. It is your chance to explain why you are right for the job.

If the employer's name is listed, do

some research on the company, using such references as "Standard and Poor's" and . "The Million Dollar Directory." That way you can tailor your letter to the company as well as the job. Do not exaggerate; that can backfire with cautious personnel people. In fact, you might be better off bypassing personnel altogether. Try sending a resume directly to the correct department head, who will probably do the hiring anyway. Never reveal your salary, even if the ad requests it.

The wrong figure -- either too high or too low -- can shoot you down. Say that salary is negotiable.

If you have not heard anything after a few weeks, there is nothing wrong with a phone call to find out how things are going. Most personnel officers do not mind one call. But do not overdo it. Ask if it is all right to stay in touch or if you should just wait to hear. While you wait, keep responding to ads. And try not to get discouraged.

Your performance should improve with experience. *** Before this year's hurricane season ends in November, if history is a reliable guide, five of the giant tropical storms will rage in from the ocean to threaten lives and property. That has been the average number of hurricanes each year since 1970. To help track these killers as they develop, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has activated its hurricane hot line. By dialing (900) 410 - NOAA, you can hear a taped update on any hurricane or tropical storm threatening states along the East Coast or the Gulf of Mexico. Callers will be charged 50 cents for the first minute and 35 cents for each additional minute. Average charge: About 85 cents. ***

More than 58,000 public, parochial and independent elementary schools can get a free Polaroid instant camera -- the Sun 600 LMS, which lists for $63.50 -- and a 10 - exposure pack of film. Approximately 23 million Americans allergic to dust mites may be able to get some relief by imitating their great - grandmothers, says a doctor, head of allergy and immunological diseases at an out - of state medical center. In the early 1900s, he says, families stored their carpets and rugs during the summer. It was mostly to enjoy cool floors and to keep the floor coverings from soaking up humidity. But the practice can also help fight allergies -- especially in homes without air conditioning -- since dust mites flourish in warm, damp rugs and carpets. Vacuuming doesn't help much, since most vacuums clean only superficially, leaving mites undisturbed. ***

From The SecretaryTreasurer's Office Change In Mortgage Rates The SPJST has raised its interest rate for residential and commercial mortgages 3/4 percent.

The new rates for residential mortgages are: 91/2 percent for 1 to 10-year term 10 percent for 11 to 15-year term 101/4 percent for 16 to 20-year term The new rates for mortgages are:

10% percent for 1 to 10-year term 11 percent for 11 to 15 - year term The SPJST change is the result of a sudden upward surge in interest rates in recent weeks. It was necessary to catch up with what has been happening in the market the past few weeks.

But the SPJST is not alone in raising interest rates. Most lenders have raised their rates and the Federal Home loan mortgage corporation recently said that the average rate for 80 percent conventional mortgages was 10.52 the previous week.

Other SPJST loan requirements and conditions remain unchanged. We do require that at least one applicant be an SPJST member for at least one year and that the applicants have at least $25,000 SPJST insurance in force at the time the application is submitted.

The SPJST can handle loans to purchase real estate, long - term financing of construction and improvements and refinancing of valid mortgage loans. For more information, please contact the Secretary - Treasurer's department or your district director.

Lodge 15, Buckholts Plans Party Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting was called to order by President Joe Zajicek.

We stood for the Pledge of Allegiance. Our visitors were Lillie Zajicek, Dan Balusek and Thomas Hartwell.

The minutes from our previous meeting were read and approved as read, also the bar and kitchen reports were given.

For new business, we are planning a party for our 50 - year members; it will be July 19 at 1 p.m. at the Buckholts SPJST Hall. There will be entertainment for everyone, so come on out and have a day of fun.

Our next meeting will be at 7 p.

Annual SPJST Czechfest In Victoria The 10th annual SPJST Czechfest will be held in the Victoria Community Center on Sunday, June 28th from 12 noon to 10 p.m.

There will be Czech culture, Czech singing, country store, and a variety of entertainment, plus 2 dances with music by: Vanek Polka Band -- 1 to 4 p.m.

Plain Country (C ) -- 6 to 10 p.m.

The $3 admission will include dances; under age 16 free.

The regular monthly meeting of El Campo - Hillje Lodge 40 was held Monday, June 15, 1987.

President Rita Vanek called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Youth Member Kim Kacal. A minute of silence was observed for all deceased members.

Secretary Leona Macha called the roll of officers and read all correspondence.

Shimek Madeline Treasurer reported on all accounts.

First Vice President Bennie Reck reported all is going well with hall management. June, July and August were booked well.

Second Vice President Dora Lee Kopecky reported on plans for Family Day July 12, 1987. All committees are functioning and everyone is looking forward to a great day of socializing by our membership.

Youth Leader Mary Ann Karasek reported on all youth activities including plans for a field trip by our youth club to Galveston.

Lodge members voted to buy two smoke eaters for our hall and also to clean, seal and wax the floor of our hall.

On motion passed the meeting adjourned.

Lodge

The annual Family Day social will be held on July 12, 1987 at the Lodge Hall, Hillje, Texas. Happy hour and social will start at 3 p.m.

Fried chicken and drinks will be furnished by the lodge. Members are asked to bring a covered dish of a vegetable, a salad, a sweet or a pastry.

There will be live music for entertainment from 3 to 5 p.m., also bring your cards and dominoes.

Fifty - year pins will be given to Marie Chovanec and Charlene Nevill.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our last lodge meeting was held Sunday, May 31 at 2 p.m., a week early because we scheduled a picnic for the regular Sunday. President Jerry Pechal called the meeting to order and Flag Bearers Tommy Gibson and Tracy Klusacek brought in the flags and led the pledge to the flag.

First item of business was the acceptance of the resignation of Czech reporter, Sister Annie Jakubec. We regretted that she had to resign. But she said that because of health reasons, she relinquishes her duties to Sister Della Mares. Sister Mares was nominated and elected to finish this year as Czech reporter. Sister Jakubec cannot recall how many years she was the reporter, maybe 20 years or more.

Many, many thanks for the wonderful job of reporting for the long period of time. She was at the picnic Sunday, June 7 and then Thursday she was taken to Scott and White Hospital for treatment. Get well soon, Sister Annie and we shall miss you at the meetings.

You can come to meetings but you don't have to take notes. Good luck, Sister Della with the new position.

The program was turned over to Sister Patsy Koslovsky who honored the high school graduates who were active in the youth club in their younger years. Those present were Kathy Billeck and Tammy Kortis; absent were Shana Patterson, Christi Wiggington and Wade Mikulas.

Congratulations to all named and hope you continue your education in the field you pursue. Brother Nick Morris spoke briefly to the graduates. Each received a gift from the youth club, a monetary gift from the lodge and a special decorated cake in their school colors baked by Judy Pechal.

The youth went to their meeting room and we'proceeded with our lodge duties. A welcome to everyone by the president and visitors recognized were Ann Balusek and Gertrude Kahlig.

Sister Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, sales representatives and trustees. She read the minutes of the previous meeting and these stood approved as read.

There was no correspondence and the new members accepted were Pamela Williams, Gerald Lynn Poboril, Justin Lee Pole and Polly Ann Galure.

Conversion for Sarah Ann Zavodny and additional insurance for Beth Marie Poboril, Kelli Marie Klinkovsky and Frank E. Klinkovsky III. A warm welcome to each named and hope you can come to some of our meetings or other activities.

On the sick list for the month of May, we knew that Brothers Eugene Marak and Edwin Jez were hospitalized and Sisters Anne Krcha and Frances Hejl. Hope you are on the way to recovery and, of course, we wish Sister Annie Jakubec a speedy recovery so she may return home.

On the officers' reports: President Pechal reminded everyone of the upcoming picnic, the preparations Saturday and Sunday and active participation of everyone. He thanked Brother Henry Janacek for cleaning and painting of the dry boxes and holder for the gas grill. Thanks to Brother Willie E. Kohutek for working on the gas grill to be used for the picnic. Thanks also to Gene and Ann Hejl for the carpeting back of the bar.

4/VESTNIK—Wednesday, June 24, 1987 supper. We are needing kitchen chairpersons for the months of August and December. The fathers were requested to stand because we honor the fathers in June. Additional members on the Family Social Committee are Frankie Klinkovsky and Patsy Koslovsky. Brother Dan Balusek thanked those from Lodge 47 who attended the 30th anniversary of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor.

The treasurer and financial secretary gave their monthly reports. Board minutes were read by Sister Adeline Kohutek.

Sister Patsy Koslovsky, youth leader, reported that Brother Willie E. Kohutek, District II director, installed the 1987 - 88 youth officers. She stated that Tommy and Laura Gibson also had perfect attendance last youth year.

She reminded everyone of the practice of Beseda before the picnic. A comment here: the two circles of Beseda Dancers stole the show at the picnic. Thanks for dancing and good luck at the District II YAD Sunday, July 19 at Flag Hall, Cyclone Lodge No. 24 and on to State!

Birthdays in June celebrated by these named: Calvin Skrabanek, Martha Klusacek, Jamie Beran, Helen Bragewitz, Frank Klinkovsky and Ruby Bolton. Wedding anniversaries will be observed by Frank and Irma Klinkovsky, Ronnie and Martha Culp and Ralph and Dorothy Kohutek. May you all enjoy continued health and happiness. Hope you all had a Special Day. The door prize winners were Dolores Skrabanek and Annie Chupik.

The next lodge meeting will be Sunday, July 5 at 2 p.m. We enjoyed a covered dish supper plus sausage prepared by the kitchen crew.

The picnic has come and gone. The weather cooperated but the crowd was not as large as anticipated. We want to thank everyone who came, brought items for the booth and auction, the bands who donated their time and talents, the Beseda Dancers and, of course, the workers. We had people from Burleson, Beyersville, Taylor, Granger and a couple from Oklahoma who come to our dances several times a year. There were others from surrounding areas, too. Thanks to all of the Supreme Lodge officers and their families for coming. The auction went over real well, thanks to the buyers. Special thanks to those who helped with the preparations and the cleanup afterwards. To those who brought their antique cars, thanks also. A special thanks to all!

The rainy weather is playing havoc with the wheat fields and gardens alike. Everything looked so promising this year and now it's ruined. The price of vegetables will really be high in the grocery stores later.

Dear Members: This past month has been a busy month for our lodge. We have had several fund - raisers which have turned out quite well.

Theresa and Billy Bobalik organized a Pool and Domino Tournament.

There was a large turnout. The winners of the Pool Tournament were: Singles Tournament -- 1st - Leslie Edwards, 2nd - Kent McNabb, 3rd - Billy

Bobalik. Partners Tournament -- 1st Kent McNabb and Russell Bond; 2nd Charlie Goldman and Dick McNabb, 3rd - Billy Bobalik and Leslie Edwards. Winners of the 42 Tournament were: 1st - Bobby Harber and Danny Harber, 2nd - Mike Rothrock and Buddy Mienen, 3rd Mrs. Bobby Harber and Mrs. Danny Harber.

Congratulations to all the winners and we would like to thank everyone for coming out and enjoying the fun!

The Ladies' Circle recently had a junk auction and despite the rainy weather, we had a large crowd. We had several junk auction buyers attend plus members and guests. The Ladies' Circle intends to have future fund raisers and would like to invite everyone out.

At our monthly meeting, we discussed the Fourth of July. I would like to welcome everyone out to our 14th anniversary celebration. The doors will open at 12 noon. From approximately 1 to 2 p.m., the youth club will perform before members and guests. Afterwards, there will be a cake auction and around 2 p.m., the fish fry consisting of fish, hushpuppies, sausage, and French fries will begin.

Meal tickets will be $3 per adult and $2 per child. From 3 to 6 p.m., the Texas Highriders from Austin will entertain members -- $2 and guests -- $3. Then from 6 to 9 p.m., the youth club will auction off more cakes. Supper with same prices will be served for those who wish to stay. Then at 9 p.m., the regular Saturday night dance will begin with the Texas Highriders until 1 a.m.; admission will be $3 for members and $4 for guests. I hope everyone is able to attend and join in on all the fun. See you there!

Dear Members: Tuesday, June 9 at 7 p.m., our President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order.

Willie Mae Kuykendall led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

All officers answered the roll call.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of our last meeting. Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall gave her rep-oft. Financial Secretary Mary Werner gave the financial report.

Special Fund Treasurer's report was given by Gilbert Walzel. All reports were accepted as read.

Upon the resignation of Willie Mae Macha, who is unable to continue sending get well cards to members who are ill, Willie Mae Kuykendall was elected to send the get well cards.

Willie Mae will appreciate your calling her if you know of any member ill or in the hospital.

In my May report, the name of Mary Werner was omitted from the list of persons who attended the orientation seminar for SPJST local lodge officers which was held in the historic university of Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton, Texas, Saturday, May 2. She also gave us a very good report.

by Sister Cheri Petr. Entertainment meeting report was given by Sister Ida Schultz. Sunshine -- Get well cards were sent to Don Petr, Dotty Hagar, Larry Petr and Neal Andreason.

Sympathy card was sent to Timpy Ondrusek on the loss of mother.

House Committee -- Adolph Salac reported roof was fixed, and parking lot light was corrected. Hall Rental -Emil Petr reported on rental dates.

Ball Club -- no report. Decorating Committee -- no report. Special Committee -- Evelyn Salac gave up to date report on money made.

Youth and Teens are having a meeting and Beseda practice was discussed. July 3 -- Bake sale at Rudolph's. July 8 -- Spaghetti dinner at 7:30 p.m. July 18 -- Princess Ball.

July 23 -- District III Camp. The Juniors are working on their scrapbook.

Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council met in Ennis at SPJST Lodge 25. Good food and games were enjoyed. Picnic on June 10 at Lodge 84 was hosted by the council. The meetings resume in September. Czech Culture meets June 29 at our lodge. Fraternal coordinator reported on dues and donations.

Unfinished business by Brother Ondrusek was on the icemaker, also a discussion followed about the light meter for DP&L. July 4th -- The Dallas Sokol picnic discussed was about the dinner, activities, games, covered dish to be brought by all barbecue furnished and workers from each lodge needed.

A motion was made to send a check to the child abuse program and they will be contacted for a presentation.

Lodge No. 88, Houston Dear Brothers and Sisters: Sister Elsie M. Talcott passed away recently at the age of 89 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Hazel and Bert Thompson, Doris and Henry Knapick; grandchildren, Jim and Ann Pech, Betty and Derrell Fogarty, Melonie and •Pete Cogbill,

Mary Knapick, Becki Knapick, Tommy and Sandy Thompson, Sonja and Frank Hartley, Bonnie and Jim Majestic, June and Dean Donze, Jean and Steve Suggs; 14 great grandchildren and 1 great - great grandchild. Services were conducted at Heights Funeral Home with interment at Forest Park Lawndale. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Sister Talcott.

Cindy and Mark Wheeler are the proud parents of a new son, Michael Christopher. Michael was also welcomed into the family by his two older brothers, Timothy and Jeffrey.

Proud grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Willie Wehring. Congratulations!

The annual "Homecoming with a Splash" held Sunday, June 7 was a successful day and enjoyed by all. The officers and committee members wish to express their appreciation to everyone who helped to make the day a success.

Brother Johnny Kosut is in Methodist Hospital undergoing tests.

Sister Vlasta Stasta was hospitalized recently. Brother Dewey Faske is a patient at St. Luke's Hospital. We wish a very speedy recovery to all of our sick members.

All members are urged to support the dance to be sponsored by the Men's Club Friday, July 10 to benefit the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas. The Central Texas Sounds will play for the dance and donations are $5 per person.

Dear Members and Friends: Like they say "you can't have it all." After so many days of rain, we finally got the sunshine we were all hoping for, but then along with that came the humidity, however, it was nice enough June 14 to bring out a good attendance for our monthly meeting.

The youth club led the Pledge of Allegiance to open the session. All officers were present and gave approved reports. We were informed of a compliment paid to our Financial Secretary Evelyn Spacek by Supreme Lodge Secretary Jerry Mikulas. We all agreed that she is most diligent and capable and she received a well earned round of applause.

The next order of business was the acceptance of three new members.

"Happy Birthday" wishes were expressed in song to Nancy Paprskar, Christine Zich, Helen Kubala and Frankie Tesar, all present at the gathering. Thirteen birthday cards to senior citizen members were mailed this month.

June 23 Carl and Christine Zich will observe their 47th wedding anniversary. We were given a vivid description of the 50th anniversary celebration of Carl's sister, Mary Pulliam's and her husband's celebration a few weeks previously, so hang in there, Christine and Carl, ONLY three years to go! We learned of one more happy high school graduate. Stephen Kercho, son of Alene and Al Kercho, finished his last year at Bell High School in Hurst.

Wednesday, June 24, 1987—VESTNiK/5 We all hope that Agnes Merlick is out of the hospital by now and that husband, Joe, is settled in at Colonial Manor Nursing Home at Beach and Lancaster streets.

Youth Leader Gordon Hubenak recounted the plans for the kids for the summer, namely Six Flags, Wet and Wild and Camp Val Verde. I failed to get the exact dates of these activities.

Before closing the meeting, President Kubala gave special gifts to the oldest mother and father present, Justine Chaloupka and Joe Paprskar. The youngest mother and father were Bunny Tesar and Mike Watkins. The rest of the membership were also given monetary gifts to mark Mother's and Father's Day. For our July meeting we have been promised a fish fry to be prepared by Dick Durham and "friend" Ron. This notice has been saved as a last news items so that it may be more easily remembered. The Sunday afternoon Polka Dance planned for June 28 has been cancelled due to a conflicting schedule of activities, but there are others listed in the calendar on page 15 of the Vestnik.

Lodge 154, Ft. Worth Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday, June 7 was called to order by President Jerry Milan. He led us to the pledge to our flag.

All the reports were approved as read.

New members accepted are Jeremy Jirik, Randall Halley, Jr. and Hunter Collins. We welcome you.

Our youth leader was working, so Rose Steinman reported the youth club had their meeting the week before, then went to the Arlington Theatre to see the "Story Book Show" and then went out for refreshments and all reported a good time.

Frank Kovar reported on the meetings he attended for CEFT in La Grange and the TOCA in Temple. He also announced Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas was changed to October 18th.

Brother Milan reminded us of the YAD being hosted by Lodge 180 in Burleson June 28th. It seems, again, several activities are scheduled for that day.

We are happy to report Carrie Ann Cleveland arrived home safely from her missionary assignment in Africa.

She had her purse strap cut from her shoulder. The purse was found later; this was in New York City.

Jerry and Donna Parker spent a week in Niagra Falls visiting Jerry's family. At this time their daughter Jill attended a State Choir Meet in Austin.

We extend our congratulations to our graduates Koy Stoeppelman, the daughter of Johnny and Mary Jean Stoeppelman; and Darren Williams, the son of Darrell and Gaye Williams, and to any graduates we didn't hear of. Best of luck for a successful future.

We extend our get well wishes to Susan Peaton and Alfonse Tesar who are now home recuperating. We were sorry to hear Agnes Merlick was re admitted to the hospital. I got a report this evening she is better and may go home soon. Her daughter Betty Mueller is here from Miami, Florida to help out. May you all get well soon.

A large group of our members along with Sokol members had 50 rooms at the Marriott in Houston while

attending the Southern District Slet, which was a big success. We drove in a hard rain Friday, but Saturday and Sunday were beautiful sunshiny days.

Due to so many who will be going to Denmark, we will not have our meeting in July. Mark the date for Sunday, August 9 at 3 p.m.

Our Vice President Rose Steinman was presented a new brief case much to her surprise.

The Sokol Gymnasts extend a big thank you for your donations and help during their benefits. We wish them a safe journey.

We hope all you fathers had a happy Father's Day. Sister Carrie Milan was our door prize winner.

Our meeting adjourned with a big "Happy Birthday" for Benny Pavey's 82nd, with Anna Johnson's special cake. May he and all celebrants have many more. Birthday wishes go out to all our July celebrants.

A memorial was made in memory of Jerry Maly by Otto Kurtz.

177 Gains Many New Members Lodge

Our June 10 meeting of Lodge 177, Academy was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Otis Beck.

After the pledge, Louis Driska reported B.J. Brozd was in the hospital.

Roll• call of officers showed all present; minutes were given from our last meeting and approved. Seventeen members were present in spite of the rain.

New members from last month are Erin M. Schwartz, David Messar, Allen Bartz and James A. Wiest; eight new members were also accepted this month, namely, Jake Josh and Zack Moore, William Johnson, Michael Hughes, Alma Johnson and Kathryn Allen.

Libbie Bartek sent get well cards to Donna Lisenbe, B.J. Brozd and Robert Nault.

Correspondence was a thank you from the Wilbert Ramm family and the Bluebonnet Chapter of the Red Cross thanking the lodge for the use of the hall.

There will be NO dance July 4 at the lodge.

Bids are being accepted for new air conditioners of the lodge.

The Audit Committee appointed were Sharon Veselka, Ornow Hutka, Georgie Pertle and Louis Driska; they ask to please have the books ready by July 1st.

Door prizes last month were by Georgie Pertle and Mary Ann Summers; this month's winners were Jerry Tomastik and Helen Bland.

Lodge 179 met for their regular meeting on May 14, 1987 at 8 p.m. in the Warrenton Guest Room. President Bergmann opened the meeting; all officers were present.

Secretary Ricky Weyand read the minutes of our previous meeting, followed by Financial Secretary Arnold Peter's report and Treasurer Lee Leonhardt's report. All reports

were approved as read.

Mr. and Mrs. Arvil Kunkel were accented as members of our lodge transferring from Lodge No. 88 in Houston.

In new business, for entertainment, we will have Bingo. All members, who wish to participate, may come for that activity.

For our next meeting the Food Committee decided to have cold cuts and members may bring a covered dish.

The meeting was adjourned and followed by a fried fish dinner and refreshments along with fine fellowship.

Lodge 180 , Burleson To Host District III YAD Dear Members and Friends: Lodge 180 regular meeting met on Tuesday, June 16 at 7:30 p.m. with Vice President Joe Hurtik conducting the meeting. The meeting was called to order by all members and visitors reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

We were happy to have two visitors, Norman and Gracie Kneschk of Lodge 183. We were happy to have you and do come back. We had two new members, Ernest and Nancy Kelly. We are happy to have you join our lodge and hope you will be active members because we are in need of more working members.

After the roll call of officers, the secretary read the minutes of the May meeting and the minutes were approved as read.

Please remember June 28. because that is the date for the District III YAD to be held at Lodge 180. Hope we will have a good crowd, because that is the day for our young people to show off their skills. We have a nice menu planned for dinner. But we are asking the ladies of our lodge to bring pastries for dessert.

We hope Charles and Ann Schneider had a good trip and a good time on their trip to Canada.

To all of those who may be on the sick list, we wish you a speedy recovery.

Remember our dances every Saturday night and bring some friends with you. Dancing is from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. with a good western band every Saturday night; bring your own bottle and setups are free.

Board of Trustees' meetings are held on the first Wednesday and regular meetings on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. Please make an effort to be present because you are needed to keep the lodge active.

Echoes From Lodge 183, Mid-Cities Dear Members: The June meeting is now history, and attending the meeting were District III Director Sid Pokladnik and also District III Sales Representative Norma Alford and her husband.

Brother Sid congratulated the members and officers for doing a good job and encouraged us to keep up the good work.

Norma showed a movie about SPJST and those members present enjoyed it very much, only wished more of you members could have been there.

After the regular meeting Norma met with the sales representatives Inez Greenlees, Angelina Stiborek, Jerry Hiesler, Daniel Roznovsky, B.J. Hlavaty and Norman Kneschk and she gave us some very good information.

The members enjoyed Brother Sid's and Sister Norma's visit to the lodge and hope they can come back real soon.

B.J. Hlavaty was the winner of the $5 a month prize and he has attended all meetings this year so he received $30. Congratulations B.J. The winner of the special door prize of $20 was Mary Ann Roznovsky AGAIN -- just goes to prove that Mary Ann attends all of the lodge meetings.

Since our last meeting we were notified that two members graduated from college, namely, Kevin Roznos and Leon Stiborek; they each were given $50 gifts from the lodge.

Congratulations Kevin and Leon and may your careers be successful ones.

The lodge voted to give $200 to the dance floor fund, the fund keeps building and it is due to members' donations. If you wish to dance on a hardwood floor and wish to donate to the fund, see your Chairman Daniel Roznovsky.

Just a thought for the day by Dale Carnegie: You can make more friends in two months by becoming really interested in other people than you can in two years trying to get people interested in you.

Birthday Club Of Lodge 88 The Birthday Club Sisters met for their regular monthly meet on June 10, 1987.

President Rita Alexander opened the meeting with Secretary Rosalee Kostom reading the minutes of the previous meeting, which were approved as read. We had no correspondence.

Our Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut wasr. 't present due to her nusband Johnnie who is in the Methodist Hospital. I 've talked to Mary since and she said he's doing very well after a major surgery.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave an accurate financial report. Lillie can always be depended on for a job well done as she keeps our finances straight. Lillie, chairman of the pastry booth on Splash Day, thanked everyone who brought pastry and helped her.

Delores Condon gave a short report on the sale by the Birthday Club: 5th -- Marie Pokluda - lace collar, 4th -- Louis Hanus - a handmade purse, 2nd -- Starla Cotton - $50 cash, 3rd -- Ann Urbanovsky - $25 cash, 1st -- David Kocurek - bedspread.

The following members are ill and need our prayers: Louise Chudej, a faithful member who never missed a meeting, Louise we miss you; Minnie Bravenec, who was the lodge caretaker for a number of years, has been admitted to Bayou Glenn Rest Home; Emily Bily, a devout Birthday Club Sister, has been confined in her home for several years. Her husband, Emil, takes such good care of her. Do send cards to these confined people, so they are reminded that we care for them. It was also announced that Della Kadlecek went back to the hospital.

We wish her the best. Mary Schenburn is still slowly recovering from a wasp sting.

Elsie Talcott, a former member of the Birthday Club, passed away May 30th. She was the mother of Doris Knapick and will be remembered as a very sweet and kind lady.

Vice President Edna Froehlich gave the names of the hostesses for July, namely, Bessie Dewer, Margaret Bohac, Georgia Buchanan and Martha Baxter.

Our birthday celebrities for June were Louise Chudej, Emily Bily, Inez Jeanes and Esther Holton. "Happy Birthday" was sung, after which we adjourned for a sandwich lunch.

Last, but one of the greatest occasions is a 50 - year Jubilee of Religious Profession that will be celebrated by Sister Mary Charlotte Vesely June 26th in Lisle, Illinois. A second celebration, the Texas Jubilee, will be celebrated Sunday, January 3, 1988 at St. Thomas Church in Ft. Worth.

I wish to thank many of you for your thoughtfulness in taking time to call on the phone, write a note and enclose the newspaper article and just verbally mention that you saw and read my interview that was published in the Northeast Extra of the Ft. Worth Star - Telegram May 20th and 21st. The June 13 historical marker dedication at the Pleasant Run School in Colleyvile was a great success.

With all the rain we have been having in Texas, we do hope that the American Sokol Southern District Slet in Houston was a success.

The Lodge 88 Men's Club is gaining momentum with preparations for the benefit dance it is sponsoring on July 10. at the Chandelier Ball Room, in further support of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas.

The admission fee will be $5 per person, but you may wish to make an additional contribution toward this movement by issuing your check to the CEFT and showing your correct name so tha; your contribution may go on the permanent record of the foundation, tax exempt.

I would like to remind you that you may also make your contribution in memory of a loved one and this also will go on record, tax exempt.

The purpose of this benefit dance is to raise funds for continued encouragement to support a chair of the Czech language and culture recently created. The University of Texas and the Texas A&M University are interested in sponsoring this program.

Establishing such a chair means that any person or group wishing to study the Czech language and culture now or in fifty years or more could request it at the endowed university and it would be guaranteed to be offered and taught by an outstanding professor.

Plans call for raising an amount of $500,000 which will be matched by the elected university.

Congratulations to Agnes Janecka for being a great - grandmother to triplets (2 girls and a boy). Wow! A lot of work cut out for someone.

Adell and Joe Vlk went to Springfield, Virginia to attend the high school graduation of their first grandson, James Lingberg. Joe and Adell are also very proud of their son in - law Thomas Roche, who was ordained a deacon of the Catholic Church June 6th.

My son, Jonathan, received the sacrament of confirmation at St. Patrick Catholic Church May 1 lth.

His brother, David, was his sponsor. ln last month's report I mentioned that our shut - in sisters were visited but I would like to add that the Easter 11owers that were brought to our dear ones in the rest homes and those confined at home were donated by our Krouzek (Circle).

San Jacinto Czech Club Prepares For Festival The San Jacinto Czech Club is in the process of making preparations for the Gulf Coast Czech Festival to be held at SPJST Lodge No. 172 in Pasadena, Texas November 7 and 8, 1987. The location will be at 3609 Preston Road.

The SJCC must prepare a layout of Czech teaching aid books, Czech News Media, Czech Culture, and life with Czech singing.

Raymond Skrabanek is seeking donors of each local Czech community life as mentioned above for this Gala Czech affair. For information write to 11016 Munn Street, Jacinto City, Texas 77029.

The SP JST Lodge No. 172, with the Czech Club, and Harris County Czech Heritage Society wiij present their first Czech Festival. There will be activities including music and singing by at least seven Czech groups; some are coming from Kolin, Louisiana.

Saturday, November 7, there will be meetings, refreshments and ballroom dancing from 1 p.m. until 1 a.m.

Sunday, November 8, the festival will begin at 9 a.m. through 12 p.m.

Come and enjoy a typical Czech Day. The Harris County Czech Heritage Society will present handbooks on Czech, genealogists' handbooks, cemetery records, census, villages of origin, passenger lists, and maps.

SVPS Chapter Ft. Worth Dear Members: The next meeting of Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association will be held at the Sokol Hall, 6500 Boat Club Road, June 28 at 2 p.m.

The officers and committees will give their reports of the business which has been transacted since the last meeting.

Sister Evelyn Spacek, the secretary, will be at the hall at 1 p.m. so those of you who want to pay your assessments before the meeting may do so.

After the meeting, as is the custom, dinner will be served to the members present. The ladies are asked to please bring pastries to go with the meal.

In order to get more members to attend our meetings, three drawings of $25 each will be given to some lucky members who are in attendance so be sure to be there; you may be one of the lucky ones.

We just heard that Agnes Merlick had been taken to the hospital for a second time. Joe, her husband, is in a nursing home and Carl went to see him last week. He said Joe looks good and he had a nice visit with him.

A Right 0 A Privilege

By W.J. "Bill" Malina As Independence Day, the 4th of July, approaches we are all brought to a renewed sense of patriotism. We hear and say words like "What a privilege it is to live in such a wonderful country as the United States." We look upon our past national accomplishments with great pride.

Too often, we are quick to criticize everything and anything that does not suit our fancy. We take so many things for granted, things that in other parts of the world are only hoped for.

We say that in the United States we have liberty and freedom, but do we know the real meaning of these words?

The motto "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" was first used by the leaders of the French revolution, which resulted in the drawing up of a document, in August of 1789, known as the "Declaration of the Rights of Man." In December of 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights," which, among other things, sets the basic social rights and freedoms of every person and states that all persons are born free and equal in dignity and rights.

In the modern day usage of English we can, and often do, use the words "liberty" and 'freedom" interchangeably. For example: the Statue of Liberty could be called "The Statue of Freedom" without changing any of its meaning, importance or glory.

The word liberty is derived from the Latin word "libertas," which meant freedom. The word freedom is derived from the Old English word "freodom." Freodom was made up of two Anglo - Saxon words; "freo" meaning dear, precious or esteemed; and "dom" meaning state, condition or rank. "Freodom" meant esteemed rank and was usually used to describe the nobility. Our modern word friend is derived from the Old Anglo - Saxon

word "freond," meaning esteemed or dear one.

The Anglo - Norman word privileges gradually replaced freedom as the word used to describe the active usage of rights usually given only to the nobility. The word privilege is made up of two Latin words, "privus" meaning separate or special and "legis" meaning law or a law. Privilege implied that the nobility was special and set apart to be governed by a separate, special set of laws, which were different from those which governed the common folk.

As Americans, we are usually held in high regard by people of other nations.

It might be said that we are people of esteemed rank -- a kind of non - regal nobility, a nobility of common people with privileges, privileges not usually enjoyed by the common people of other nations.

One of the definitions of the word right is "that which is due anyone by just claim." It has been suggested that rights are only privileges which do not have to be paid for, therefore making them available to everyone.

In modern usage, each of us has our own personal definitions of the words: freedom, liberty, privilege and rights.

We each have our own idea of what is a right and of what is a privilege. Many things which we today accept as rights were considered privileges by our forefathers.

There is a hymn that goes "Count your blessings, name them one by one --." Perhaps, if you would count your rights, name them one by one, it might surprise you how many of them are really privileges. Rights are ours just for the asking, privileges are special and not available to everyone. It cannot be denied that rights are dear, but all things which must be worked for, especially privileges, are precious.

We tend to boast of our freedoms and, rightfully so, not in a spirit of superiority, but in a spirit of leadership, setting an example for others to follow, hoping that they can see something in our lives that they want for themselves.

As we reflect upon the freedom that is guaranteed by our Constitution and symbolized by the celebration of Independence Day on 4th of July, can we truly say that our "FREEDOM" is a right? Or is it in reality a privilege?

May 26, 1987 Dear Parents and Youth Campers.

It will soon be time to attend SPJST Youth Camp. I'd like to take this opportunity to acquaint you with the Guidelines For Campers. *** GUIDELINES FOR CAMPERS 1. Effective January, 1984 the ages for camp will be 6 through age 16.

2. All campers will participate in all scheduled activities.

3. If you have to be late for a scheduled activity or cannot attend for some valid reason, it must be reported to the adult leader in charge.

4. (a) If you arrive in an automobile and it is to stay at camp until you leave, you will be permitted to unload your belongings, park it and not drive it during your stay at camp, except to leave in case of dire necessity or emergency. Upon arrival in your car, the key(s) to your car will be left with the DYC, who will give them to you in case of need or at your time of departure. The principal mode of getting around at camp is your feet; cars will not be used to transport persons from one location to another.

When driving onto and from the camp premises, the speed is 15 mph and will be strictly observed. Anyone driving in

excess of this limit is endangering the lives of others. (b) Transporting campers to any activity site will be done by an adult.

NO CAMPERS; or LITs will be allowed to transport campers.

5. Except in case of an emergency, you will not be allowed to leave the camp grounds.

6. Lights OUT will be strictly observed -- QUIET! 7. No boys visiting in girls' quarters and vice - versa. No campers are to be in the staff cabins at any time and the staff is not permitted to be in campers' cabins.

8. No discourteous acts toward anyone.

9. No hazing (pranks - harmless or otherwise) of fellow campers.

10. No throwing anyone into the swimming pool.

11. No abusing camp property or equipment. Any damage done while your group is at camp will be charged against your district's allocation and that means less money for your district and you as a camper. In addition, if you are caught, your parents will be called to come pick you up immediately. Vandalism of any sort will not be tolerated.

12. Each camper will keep everything orderly around his own bunk.

13. Good sportmanship and conduct

14. Alcoholic beverages will not be tolerated anywhere at any time by anybody.

15. All camp areas will be cleaned before leaving camp. Campers will be expected to pick up all litter on the grounds and inside cabins where they stayed.

16. Necessary personal phone calls by campers will be made on a collect basis only. In the event this is not done, the camper will be charged later after the billing comes through.

You can show your appreciation of camp by observing all rules and accepted norms of behavior. Whatever you do will reflect on you first of all, on your family second. and on your lodge and district, and ultimately, the whole SPJST. Think about it. Enjoy yourself and have a good camp.

Hey, all you District IV youth club members - the 1987 YAD is over.

Maybe it's hard to believe but June 20th came so fast.

Signing in began at 1 p.m. with talent and royalty competitions at 1:30 p.m. This year's YAD was hosted by San Angelo Lodge No. 160 and was held at Wall Brethren Church Hall, Wall, Texas. A light meal followed the award presentations.

Dear Members, Summer is a time which all our youth look forward to with excitement.

May began with a reception honoring our moms for Mother's Day. Each youth honored their mom with cake, punch and a wooden fork ornament which they had previously made.

June was the installation of our new youth officers for 1987 - 88. District II Director Willie E. Kohutek installed each officer, along with a short outline of his duty and a word of encouragement. Thank you, Willie, for being a special part of our meeting.

June 7 was a big day at the Seaton Star Hall Picnic. There was plenty of good food, games and visiting with old and new friends. Our youth members were busy working with the fish pond, bottle throw, ring - a - bottle and bean bag toss. I want to thank all youth members and parents for working and doing such an outstanding job. To those of you who helped the day before, thanks to you, also. Maybe I should say thank you also to David and Donnie, the four wheeler drivers, who rewarded each worker with a ride.

The picnic also brought much excitement for 16 of our youth. They made their first public appearance, representing the two Junior Beseda circles of Lodge No. 47. The youth have put in much time and hard work and June 7 proved this to everyone in attendance! You all did great. I am so proud of you and I also speak for all of Lodge 47. Members of the Beseda are (Circle I) -- Michelle Skrabanek, E.J. Pechal, Lori Greger, James Kortis, Melanie Koslovsky, Jason Reese, Laura Gibson, Tommy Gibson. (Circle II) -- Deana Culp, Tracy Klusacek, Jennifer Reese, Gary Skrabanek, Michele Reese, Melinda Reese, Erin Skrabanek, Jon Gersbach. Our alternate is Diane Pavelka.

Our instructors are definitely to be praised for their time, hard work and patience. We appreciate your willingness to learn the youth version.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club Dear Readers, The monthly meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was held Wednesday, June 10, 1987 beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was led by Jeffrey Posvar and Tracie Chervenka.

The new officers were installed before our meeting by our DYC Frankie Klinkovsky in the mother lodge meeting. Then the officers were presented an assortment of pink and white silk roses by the youth leaders.

The officers are: President -- Janet

Macek, Vice President -- Christy Marek, Secretary -- Susan Holtman, Treasurer -- Kristie Waits and Reporter -- Melanie Zavodny.

President Janet Macek called the meeting to order. Secretary Susan Holtman called the roll; 24 members, 4 adults, Mrs. Jane Bruggman, Mrs. Nancy Posvar, Mrs. Darlene Pechal, and Craig Waits and 1 guest, Chad Bruggman, were present.

The minutes were then read and approved.

Kristie Waits gave the treasurer's report. The balance was $224.62. The treasurer reminded us about our yearly dues. They are $1.00 and need to be in at the next meeting to Kristie Waits.

We are still selling our prize tickets for the half of beef to be given away.

The barbecue that was scheduled has been cancelled.

The meeting was then turned over to our special guest, Mr. Klinkovsky. He told us about the YAD on July 19 at Lodge 24. Camp for Juniors is from July 27 to July 30th. Camp for Teens is July 30 to August 2nd. The fall meeting is September 20th.

Our Youth Leader Rose Harvell gave us our YAD cards. They are to be turned in (in duplicate) to her by June 27th. She encouraged us to participate since we are hosting this year's YAD. Congratulations to Craig Waits who recently graduated from Rogers High School. "Best of Luck" to you in the future.

Happy Birthday to Chris McNeill whose birthday will be June 29th.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 14 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Our meetings will always be on the second Tuesday of each month, instead of the second Wednesday. This change was made by the mother lodge members.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 80, Holland, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother CLAUDIE CECIL GAINES, who died May 28, 1987 in a Holland nursing home at the age of 75.

Brother Gaines was born in the Joe Lee community. He lived most of his life in Holland. He was a member of Val Verde Baptist Church near Holland. He was a retired farmer.

Funeral services were held May 30 at Goodnight Funeral Home of Bartlett with the Rev. Jay Thomas officiating.

Burial was in the Holland City Cemetery.

Brother Gaines was preceded in death by his wife, Connie Mable Gaines; a daughter, Karen Gaines; a son, Grover Gene Gaines; two brothers, Clyde Gaines and Woodrow Gaines; one sister, Nila Parmer.

Of Sympathy Expression We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 80, Holland, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother RUDOLPH GROSSMAN, who died March 27, 1987 in a Holland nursing home at the age of 80.

Born June 1, 1906 in Granger, Brother Grossman was a retired farmer. In February, 1985, our lodge held a special meeting to present Brother Grossman with his 50 - year membership pin.

Funeral services were held March 30 at St. Cyril nd Methodius Church in Granger with the Rev. Walter Matus officiating. Burial was in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Julia Grossman of Granger; two sons, Rudy Grossman, Jr. of Rockdale and Daniel Lee Grossman of Holland; one grandson, Randy Grossman; two granddaughters, Debbie Fenter and Keisha Grossman; one great granddaughter, Tuesdi Fenter; one sister, Mrs. Lillian Horsak of Granger.

Sefcik - Recek Wedding St. Mary's Church of the Assumption in West was the setting for the ceremony uniting Melissa Ann Recek and Edwin Joseph (Bubba) Sefcik in marriage on Saturday, June 13, 1987 at 1 in the afternoon. Msgr.

Edward Rabroker performed the double ring ceremony with Mrs. Ernest Uptmore and Mrs. Johnnie Shimek as witnesses; godmothers of the couple.

Andy Grmela and Dale Berger served as altar boys.

The groom is the son of Mr. ana Mrs. Rudy J. Sefcik of West.

The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny L. Recek, wore a designer bridal gown of ivory organza with full puff sleeves. The satin bodice was accented with silk lace and pearls. The full skirt was appliqued with lace.

Pleated organza ruffles edged the train. A wreath of silk blossoms held a silk illusion veil.

The bride's bouquet was a cascade of cymbidium orchids, yellow roses, starburst mums, gypsophilia, purple statice, and English ivy. Statice was tied into the love knots of the ivory streamers.

Aimee Wolske of West was the maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Debbie Burleson, the bride's cousin, Laura Russell, Sandra Berger, Torie Grmela, all of West; and Pauline Dvoracek of New Orleans, Louisiana.

They wore gowns of purple satin with open necklines and full sleeves.

Bows accented the bodice back. The full satin skirts swept into chapel trains. The bridesmaids carried ivory and lace fans accented with purple statice, yellow fugi, white cushion mums, English ivy, gypsophilia* and lavender and purple cascading streamers.

Kristin Uptmore, the bride's cousin, was the flower girl. She carried an ivory lace nosegay of statice, starburst mums and yellow roses with lavender and ivory streamers.

The best man was Darrin Banik of West. Groomsmen were Terry Craig Sefcik, the groom's brother, Gary Uptmore, the bride's cousin, Kevin Brown, Mark Recek and Mike Recek, the bride's brothers. Bradley Uptmore, the bride's cousin, was ring bearer for the ceremony.

Performing ushers' duties included Shawn Kudelka of West, Brent Cooper of Waco, Jim Ferrero of Round Rock, and Randy Hendrick, the groom's cousin, of Houston.

The groom was dressed in an ivory tuxedo. The groomsmen, ring bearer, ushers and the couple's fathers were all attired in charcoal gray tuxedos.

The soloists were Natalie Gandy and Jackie Watkins with Kim Dillard as organist.

The houseparty consisted of Ann Nors, and Paula Barton of West, and Mary Hendrick, the groom's cousin, of Houston.

Following the ceremony, the couple's parents were hosts for a reception, dinner and dance at West Fraternal Auditorium. The Bavarian Two provided music in the afternoon and the Harold Strand Orchestra played for the evening dance. The grand march was led by Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Kapczynski of West.

After a honeymoon in Runaway Bay, Jamaica, the couple will reside in West.

The groom is the grandson of the late Edwin and Annie Stavinoha of Schulenburg, and the late Joe and Theresa Sefcik of Dayton, Texas.

Leaders of America state winner. She received the National Cotincil of Teachers of English writing award, as well as numerous other awards. She is a member of National Honor Society.

Kimberly is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Neil MacArthur of Houston, Texas. Her family are members of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth, Texas.

Her maternal grandmother is Anne Juran Polk, who is also a member of

Lodge 92. Her great - grandparents were Mary and Josef Juran. Mr. Juran was a charter member and the first president of Lodge 92 when it was organized in 1910. Mary Juran was a Vestnik correspondent for Lodge 92 for approximately 35 years.

The CHS Of Texas Organizes New Chapter A new chapter was organized at Rowena, Texas during a regular meeting and genealogical seminar of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas that was held May 16, 1987. (The Kenneth Klanika society is a state organization.) This new chapter is known as Runnels, Tom Top academic honors at Taft High Green, and Concho Counties Czech School this year were earned by Heritage Society.

Kenneth Klanika, valedictorian, who Officers elected were President graduated with a 98.21 average.

Stanley Broz of Lowake, Vice Kenneth is the son of Mr. and Mrs. President Robert Mikeska of San Alton Klanika, all members of SPJST Angelo, Secretary Elizabeth Walther Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi. of Rowena, Treasurer Albert Vaja of San Angelo, and Reporter Pauline —SPJ ST— Shiller. They were installed by Marjorie Mican Matula of Victoria, State President, assisted by Victor National Peter, State President and Membership chairman. of Pasadena.

A Czech genealogy seminar was held throughout the day and included 3 state officers as speakers, who were Marjorie Matula of Victoria, Victor Peter of Pasadena, and Arnold Pechal of Temple. Other speakers were Mrs. Millie Welch of Farmers Branch, Mrs. Jackie Chude of Midland and Robert Mikeska of Wall. Katherine Wokaty of Victoria was in charge of registration.

Scholar Recipient

Over 60 attended this historic event which was hosted by SPJST Lodge No. 49. The ladies of the lodge served a delicious Czech - style lunch. Mrs. Elizabeth Walther, currently serving as president, handled all the arrangements prior to this meeting.

The next state meeting and genealogical seminar has been set for August 15, 1987 at the Sokol Gymnastic Center, one and one - half miles east of Ennis, Texas (near Dallas).

Under other chapter announcements, the following were noted: The Fayette County Czech Heritage Society will hold its first regular meeting June 18 at the La Grange State Bank in La Grange, beginning at 7 p.m. Mrs. Matula and Mr. Peter will both be on hand for this meeting. Bell County Czech Heritage Society held a seminar on June 7 in Temple.

Victoria County Czech Heritage Society will hold its 4th annual Czech Heritage Festival and State Taroky Tournament on October 18th. Harris County Czech Heritage Society will co - host their first Czech Festival on November 7 and 8 in Pasadena.

Concho Valley Counties CHS Held The local chapter of Concho Valley Counties Czech Heritage Society held their first business meeting of officers Wednesday night, June 3rd at 7, at the Catus Flower Shop in San Angelo.

The purpose of the Society is to learn of the Czech heritage, history, genealogy and language.

The local society was organized Saturday, May 16, 1987 in Rowena at the SPJST Lodge No. 49 hall, with state officers in attendance. They explained how to organize and go about obtaining information on your genealogy; Villages of Origin -- Victor A. Peter of Pasadena, How to Begin and Some Problems Involved -- Mrs. Millie Welch of Richardson (Dallas), Catholic Church Records -- Mrs. Jackie Chude (Midland), Maps of Czechoslovakia -- Arnold J. Pechal (Temple), Czech Pioneers -- Mrs. Marjorie Matula of Victoria, Educational Foundation Director of Czech Brethren -- Robert Mikeska of San Angelo - Wall area, Czechs in the Census -- Mrs. Jackie Chude (Midland), Researching Your Family and Getting It Into Print -- Mrs. Marjorie Matula.

Local officers elected are President -- Stanley Broz of Lowake, Vice President -- Robert Mikeska of San Angelo, Secretary -- Elizabeth Walther of Rowena, Treasurer -- Albert Vaja of San Angelo, Reporter -- Pauline Shiller of Rowena. State President Marjorie Michan Matula of Victoria presided at the seminar and installed the officers.

Membership is open to all Czech and interested persons to preserve the Czech language, history, genealogy and language. It is a non denominational, non - political and non - profit organization.

The next meeting of the Concho Valley Counties Czech Heritage Society is scheduled for the third Sunday, July 19 in the SPJST Hall in Rowena. Meetings will be held alternately in Rowena, San Angelo and Wall.

Reunion Brings Back Friends, Memories To Old School Grounds [Courtesy Ft. Worth Star Telegram; Northeast Extra]

By Pat Nimmo Lydia (Tirk) Alholm's deep roots still cling to the land of her childhood on Pleasant Run Road in Colleyville.

Her parents, Anton and Frances Tirk, bought a 150 - acre farm there in 1924 when she was 4. She and her husband, Roy, live on 25 acres of that land today.

Interwoven into Alholm's early memories are the two - mile walks down the winding road she made to her home every afternoon with her sister and two brothers from the old Pleasant Run School, built in the 1870s.

A two - story brick building replaced the wooden structure about 1912, and another single - story brick building, part of which remains today housing B - K Plumbing Supplies, was built around 1939.

Stacks of white plastic pipe and other plumbing supplies line the school grounds where children used to play.

In 1962, after the Pleasant Run district consolidated with Grapevine Independent School District, the building was closed because too many repairs were needed.

Alholm, 67, secretary - treasurer of the Pleasant Run Ex - Students and Teachers Association, said a historical marker is scheduled to be dedicated to the school site at a reunion June 13th.

There are about 15 active members of the association, Alholm said, but she expects more than 100 to attend the dedication. Other officers in the association include President Bill McGinnis and Vice President Ray Hicks. Certain to be at the reunion are Alholm's three girlhood chums, Frances Reynolds McElhaney, Loveta Buckingham Vaught and Mildred Crow Ziegler.

"We were always together," Alholm said. "They called us the big four."

Ken Ridley, who attended the Pleasant Run School in the first through the eighth grades, owns the plumbing business. He said it doesn't bother him to work in his old school building.

(The Pleasant Run School reunion group gathered at the Colleyville Elementary School at 10:30 a.m. June 13 for a picnic lunch. Drinks were furnished. The dedication ceremony was at 2 p.m. at the old school site, 5505 Pleasant Run Road.)

"It's all right," he said. "I kind of liked the fact I went to school here but anymore I just come in and go to work."

Alholm has other memories of school days in the red brick, two story building constructed in 1912.

"I remember the old outside stairs that went from the bottom to the second floor out in the back," she said. "We waited under that stair step when my father brought us to school early. We always walked home."

She enjoys showing a class photo taken in 1929.

"Upstairs they had sliding doors, because that was the auditorium.

There was a stage at the north side of it," Alholm said.

The older children had classes upstairs, and when the y had a

program, "they would just open up those doors and make it into an auditorium."

The classrooms were heated by large, pot - bellied stoves with metal grillwork around them so children couldn't get burned.

"There was an old pump well a little bit to the northeast of the school and outside toilets," Alholm said. "When you went to the bathroom you had to go outside regardless if it was raining."

There was no cafeteria. "Everyone brought their sack lunches, and a lot of time we would exchange sandwiches," Alholm said.

When her father divided the farm between the children, she asked for the land where she worked so hard while growing up.

"We ran a dairy and a truck farm, and I worked on that old farm," she said.

Alholm's mother, now 87, still lives in the family farmhouse, which is about 300 yards through a grove of trees behind Alholm's land. Her younger brother, Joe Tirk, lives on land next to his mother.

In 1943 during World War II, Alholm joined the Women's Auxiliary Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) and was stationed, for several years in Washington, D.C. Her older brother, an Air Force fighter pilot, was killed over Italy in 1944.

Alholm's love of family roots and genealogy has given her another hobby -- keeping in contact with her ancestors in Czechoslovakia. Her parents immigrated to this country from there in the early 1900s, and Alholm speaks the language fluently.

She and her younger sister, Frances Matthews, spent a month there with relatives in the 1970s.

Lekce osmnacti—Lesson 18 Correcting some often made errors.

In this lesson, we will deal with some errors that are frequently made by Czechs in Texas.

KDE—KAM These 2 words are probably misused more than any other. We frequently hear, "Kde jede g?" This is wrong. To indicate the physical action of going somewhere, the word KAM is used: Kam jdeg; Kam jedeg? The word kde indicates a stationary situation, and cannot be used to indicate physical action. Ex.:Kde to je? Kde bydlite? Kde je flatiron? etc. And using KAM, we say the following: Kam pojedete veer?

Kam pfijdete po divadle? Kam jste gli po zabave, etc. All you need to remember is whether you are indicating action or not.

SEM —JSEM We call words like these homonyms; they sound the same but have entirely different meanings. In English, some homonyms are: there, their, they're, bear, bare; and close, clothes.

SEM means "here", or "to here", with ACTION, Ex.: Veera pfijeli sem.

Pojd' sem! Dojeli sem gtastne. All of these involved action in coming or getting here.

JSEM means simply I am, or used with certain verbs, denotes tense, or time something happened.

Ex., Jsem uz starK1 elovek.

Jsem byl (byla) na vflete v horach.

Jsem se mei dobfe.

In speaking the above two words of sem and jsem, there is practically no recognizable difference: however, in writing it makes all the difference in the world. One means one thing, and the other means something else.

SPRAVA—ZPRAVA Here are 2 tricky words, both written and pronounced exactly the same, but again have 2 entirely different meanings. It is therefore important that we know how to spell the one we wish to use.

SPRAVA— means administration, or SPRAVKA, which is a repair; or SPRAVITI, which means to fix or to repair.

Ex.: Statni sprava je umistena v Austin!.

(In colloquial speech, "mole, and "milIou" may be used for mohu, mohou.)

NESMIM—NEMUSIM Nemusim means: "I need not— don't have to."

Nesmim means, "I must not".

SMET Smet means, "to be allowed to" Smim— I may Smig— you may Smi— he (she) may Smime— we may Smite— you (pl.) may Smeji— they may Ex.: Smim koufit?— Smite.

Soft nouns take the ending -i, hard nouns the ending -I and soften (palatalize) the preceding hard consonant. But some hard inanimate masculine nouns take the ending -u: nouns ending in g, h, ch and r (but words having -a in G.sg. use the ending -e; na dvofe, v potoce, see lesson 17), newly formed and recently borrowed words and other words that cannot be specified by a rule. Often both endings can be used with one noun (v jazyku-v jazyce). Masculine animate hard take -u or -ovi. The longer ending is used when the noun stands alone or the last in a group of nouns denoting one person.

Vjrstavu "Britska soueasna fotografie" priprovily ministerstvo kultury Ceske socialisticke republiky, velvyslanectvi Spojeneho kralovstvi Velke Britanie a Severniho Irska v SSR a Britska rada. Je reciproeni akci za obdobnou kolekci eeskoslovenskS,ch fotografii, kterou pro Velkou Britanii pfipravila pfed dverna roky Mora y ska galerie v Brne (Jihomorayskjr kraj) Tam bude take tato expozice koncem roku 1986 instalovana. Groggily awakening, you get the good news: Your operation was successful. Later comes the bad news: Your health insurance will cover only a fraction of the costs, leaving you saddled with massive medical bills. It's a common scenario; 85 percent of Americans have too little insurance for major illnesses. But if it happens to you, don't just accept the insurer's decision. You can always appeal -- and you may win.

Although they don't like to talk about it, insurance companies do make mistakes. In 1986, one of the out - of insurance state departments investigated more than 6,000 complaints about health coverage, many of them involving alleged errors by insurers. Of the total, 40 , percent were resolved at least partially in favor of the consumer. The problems could be a simple clerical error or a computer mistake; a policy's language could be ambiguous and open to being misinterpreted. In any case, a health insurance company that denies your claim or pays only part of it owes you a detailed explanation. The address and phone number of the insurer's claims department should be in your policy.

Ask under exactly what provision the claim is being denied or reduced. Then check your copy of the policy to see if you agree with the insurer's interpretation.

If you're convinced you have a case, it's time to appeal. The right kind of letter can be effective. Instead of an angry letter, send "a cool, precise one with all the facts." Start with the insurer's consumer - complaint department. If that doesn't work, write the company president. If your insurance is provided through your employer (as it is 75 percent of the time) get your personnel office involved. Employers pay a large part of the cost of workers' premiums, and they can put pressure on insurers to handle complaints fairly.

If the problem is still not solved, the next step is to write your state insurance - regulatory agency. The agency usually can't compel an insurer to pay a claim, but it can step up the pressure by contacting the company on your behalf. Also check, if your policy has an arbitration clause. If it does, you may be able to submit the dispute to an independent panel for settlement. The last resort, of course, is to sue to recover your medical expenses, plus -- in almost half of the states -- punitive awards for mental distress. But brace yourself for a long, expensive battle. Meanwhile, don't neglect to do something about the disputed medical bills. If no attempt is made to arrange payment, the hospital may turn your account over to a collection agency. If the bills are high, most hospitals will help you work out a monthly payment plan. Some hospital administrators will even contact the insurer on your behalf. ***
