Lodge 24, Cyclone Honors 50-Year Members On May 3, 1987, fourteen 50 - year members were honored and presented with 50 - year membership pins. The

pins were presented by SL Secretary/Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and Lodge 24 President Barbara Macek.

A delicious spaghetti dinner was served prior to the presentation with about one hundred people in attendance.

Congratulations and best wishes are extended to the 50 - year members and their families.

See the ad on Page 15. *** Saturday, May 16th your editor attended a meeting of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFI') meeting at the KJT Headquarters Building in La Grange (in which city, in the courthouse, our own SPJST Society was founded in 1897). The final plans for the drive to reach the $500,000 goal to establish a permanent endowment at either University of Texas in Austin or Texas A & M University in College Station Bryan to teach the Czech language (A Czech "Chair") on a permanent basis.

Of our goal of the $500,000, we have reached two - fifths of it -- $200,000.

In the meeting, it was decided for all of our Czech - oriented and founded organizations and publications interested in our effort to use a thermometer - type of measure designating how our donations and pledges are progressing instead of the San Jacinto monument we had been using to date. CEFT needs all the help possible. A corrected list of officers and directors is in this issue also including their addresses; please feel free to contact any of them about donating to this most worthy cause.

Our SPJST lodges, family reunions, various "Fests," etc. are encouraged to donate to this project. Send donations and/or pledges to our Treasurer Brother Ben Trcalek (address is also in this issue). Rest Home No. I in Taylor and your editor also attended the occasion. The ceremony was brief and very effective and we will have more to say in the future when our pictures arrive showing the filled parking lots and the very large capacity crowd in attendance. The Bell County Chapter of the Czech Genealogy w 4 :d a workshop at 1 p.m. in the SPJS I Jupreme Lodge Building at Temple, Saturday, June 6th. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

Thelma Bartosh -SPJST-

Perhaps half of the 3.7 million children who will begin kindergarten this fall may not be ready. More and more educators now believe that these youngsters, many of them little older than 5, may not have acquired the hearing, muscle control and eye movement needed to excel in kindergarten. Boys, whose development at that age lags behind that of girls by about six months, are at a particular disadvantage. The result could be poor performance and low self - esteem that could carry over into adulthood. Here's how to evaluate your youngster -- and how to strengthen his or her skills before the fall.

Many preschool programs -- which at least 50 percent of today's children have attended by age 5 -- put graduates through kindergarten - readiness tests.

In addition, most school districts screen youngsters for admission to kindergarten. If tests are not conducted by either facility, educators should at least be able to guide you to a private testing clinic. A 5 - year - old should be able to do many of the activities encountered in preschool. A kindergartner should be mature enough, for example, to pay attention to a story for 10 to 15 minutes. A child should also be able to say his or her own name. Be easily understood. Wait for his or her turn to do and say things.

Surrender objects when asked to do so.

Draw simple figures, such as circles or squares, and stay within lines when coloring. Tell left from right, in from out and big from little. A new kindergartner who cannot perform most of these skills might be better off held back for a year, educators say.

Parents can use that time to send the child to a good preschool program -perhaps with a curriculum specifically designed to boost kindergarten skills.

Also, some public and private schools are offering special developmental kindergarten classes for the not - quite - ready child.

Even if your child is ready, you can take steps this summer -- in a casual, enjoyable way -- to help him or her do well. Involve the child more in your daily activities. Show him or her how to use a measuring cup or a screwdriver. Such lessons help children learn, among other things, to follow directions and improve their manual dexterity. Take care not to push too hard -- the idea is to have fun while learning. Read stories aloud every day, and discuss them. Provide learning experiences, such as trips to zoos or museums, or simply take walks and discuss what you see along the way.

Talk about kindergarten and what will happen there, including recess, snacks and quiet time. Try to have your child meet other youngsters who will be in his or her class. If the school does not have an orientation program, take the youngsters for a familiarization visit -during the school year, if possible.

Introduce the child to the teacher and principal so that everyone will know one another from the start. *** Here are two changes in the "Secretaries Directory"; please paste them in the directory from last week in the proper places.

Orientation Well Attended The local leaders orientation held Saturday, May 2nd was considered a success. Nearly 200 lodge leaders from over the state attended the program.

The orientation was held on the historic campus of University of Mary Hardin Baylor College.

Lodge The entire Supreme participated in presentation of the

program. The topics were chosen to address those areas where information and communication were needed.

The program was planned to address some of the needs and concerns facing our leadership at both the local and Home Office levels. It was also designed to communicate information, discuss the strengths of the SPJST and discuss goals for our future growth and progress.

A portion of the program was set aside to answer questions from those in attendance.

New. Way To Make Mortgage Payments

What is a pre - authorized check? It is a check for an installment which is automatically drawn from your checking account. The check follows regular bank channels and is charged to your account just as if you had written it.

The pre - authorized check plan has proven to be very popular for the purpose of making policy premium payments on direct bill lodges and we expect its use for loan payments to be equally popular.

Members who have real estate mortgages through the SPJST will be receiving information on a new service now being offered. The SPJST can now automatically draft various types of checking accounts for monthly, quarterly and semi - annual loan payments. This new pre - authorized check service will save the member postage, time, and worry about the payment arriving on time.

Updates to the mortgage loan servicing system make it possible to handle loan payments more efficiently by using the pre - authorized check method. There are also advantages to the member. The SPJST automatically prepares the draft (or check) for the

Dear Readers: Our May meeting was called to order by President Barbara Macek. All officers were present. Visitors recognized at the meeting were Lodge President Howard Lesikar and Mrs. Fred Kaulfus; we hope both of you can come back soon.

Secretary Carol Chervenka read the minutes of the last meeting; they were approved as read. Several thank you -notes and letters were also read by Sister Chervenka.

Shirley Waits gave the treasurer's report and discussed it.

Board of Trustees' report was given

by Wilbert Mikeska.

The committee chairmen gave good monthly reports.

The members voted on several new members; we hope you all will start coming to our lodge activities.

Birthday celebrants this month are Bernise Sebek, Carol Chervenka, Louise Zavodny and Wilbert Mikeska.

Martha Zavodny had a birthday in April. "Happy Birthday" to all celebrants; we hope you have a wonderful day.

President Macek thanked everyone for their help at the 50 - year pin celebration; it turned out to be a wonderful afternoon.

There is no Cleanup Committee as of now, so if anyone is interested in cleaning the hall on a weekly, monthly or yearly basis, please contact Louise Zavodny -- 985 - 2556.

Kitchen chairman for the month of June will be Linda Smetanka; if anyone wishes to work contact her.

Remember District II YAD will be held here July 19, the members will be preparing a meal (spaghetti plate for $2.50 per person) for those in attendance. You may start making plans as to whether you will eat here or not, it should be very good.

President Leshikar said a few words of thanks to the members for their continuous support and keeping Lodge 24 one of the strong ongoing charter lodges. He was very proud of us and it made all the members feel good and we

Youth Leader Rose Howell gave the youth report; she had lots of information on the new rules for YAD and State YAD, so , if you have any children involved in this, please contact Rose. She also reminded parents that, at the next meeting, they need to bring a signed and notorized note saying your child can go to camp.

25, Ennis Honors 50-Year Members

Our lodge met Thursday, May 14th at 8 p.m. President Ken Krajca called the meeting to order.

Secretary Laure Krajca read the minutes of our previous meeting; these were accepted as read.

Correspondence included a letter from SL President Howard Leshikar regarding a Senior Citizens directory.

Reports were given by other officers. Financial Secretary Margaret Krajca reported that Lodge 25 was on direct billing from the Supreme Lodge.

Vice President Albin Bouska, chairman of the door, thanked all who helped out at the Polka Festival.

President Krajca also expressed his appreciation to all who made the Polka Festival a great success.

Treasurer Phillip Langer said he should have a complete report at the next meeting.

President Ken Krajca announced the 50 - year members and asked them to come forward. Fifty year members who were able to attend the social were Joe Kudrna, Dorothy M. Kudrna, Elizabeth Moucka and Louis Kudrna.

Congratulations to the honorees. We wish the other four recipients would have come, too. We missed you, Frank Gurecky, Emily Kubin, Joe Hejny, Jr., and Vlasta Jurcik.

The Fraternal Council meeting will be held on May 28th at Lodge 25 at 7:30 p.m. with SPJST Host Lodge 25 and Co - Host SPJST Lodge 135, and WFLA No. 402. Members are asked to bring refreshments.

From Victoria Lodge 32 'Newsletter

Lodge 32 held their regular monthly meeting recently with 15 members and all officers present. President Franklin Elles presided.

Since our previous meeting, we have lost a very active member. Ruby Rokyta who passed away April 29th.

She was also one of our Czech Singers of Victoria and we miss her very much.

Those attending the SPJST Orientation in Belton recently were Franklin Elles, Adolf Motl, Ella Arnold, Michael Ahlstrom and Katherine Wokaty. Each made a report and brought out the Fraternalism with the State, which was much discussed and promoted. We all appreciate having the opportunity to attend this most informative session.

A donation of $105 was made to the Spirit of Youth of Victoria; this is $35 per child for 3 underprivileged children.

Franklin and Lois Elles have arrived back home from a one month tour of Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia. Their main interest was a visit with daughter, Darla and her husband, Mark Buccigrossi, who are stationed there with the Air Force.

Side trips were made into Austria and a wonderful trip into Breclav, Czechoslovakia to visit with the PODLUZAN singing and dancing group who had visited all over Texas last November and December. They reported a most wonderful trip and their writeup will probably be in another area of this newspaper.

We are very proud to report that one of our youth members, Jason Motal, has had the honor of being one of our youth selected to receive the San Antonio - Victoria Diocesan Award.

We are proud of Jason for this accomplishment.

Much discussion was held on the SPJST Czechfest which is fast approaching on Sunday, June 28th, at the Victoria Community Center. We invite everyone to come join us for a very fun - filled day, with lots of music and dancing and lots of kolache, among other foods to eat and things to do.

Mary Raska won our attendance prize. Our next meeting will be held June 3, at Citizens National Bank Meeting Room, at 7:30 p.m.

The regular monthly meeting of El Campo - Hillje lodge was held on Monday, May 18, 1987, following the Bingo games.

President Rita Vanek called the meeting to order. Youth Member Kim Kacal led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. A minute of silence was observed for our departed members, especially George E. Rubesh.

Secretary Leona Macha called the roll of officers.

The minutes of our last meeting held April 20, 1987, were approved.

Treasurer Madeline Shimek presented the treasurer's report pending audit. Report on file.

First Vice President Bennie Reck reported on hall management.

Second Vice President Dora Lee Kopecky reported all plans in progress for our "Family Day" to be held on Sunday, July 12, 1987, at 3 p.m.

Youth Leader Mary Ann Karasek reported on youth activities and summer camp.

Floyd Shimek, Building Committee member, reported the committee studying ramp construction at main entrance of our hall.

The lodge welcomed new members Megan E. Frankson, Elizabeth Ann King and Lillian Marek.

Our lodge voted to contribute $200 to the Louise Volunteer Fire Department.

Dora Lee Kopecky and Leona Macha reported on the Officers' Orientation they attended on Saturday, May 2, 1987 held at University of Mary Hardin Baylor Campus at Belton, Texas.

Plans Finalized At Lodge 47

Picnic

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The Lodge 47 picnic will be here before we know it. Members of the lodge are being asked to donate kolache, cakes, pies (fruit or nut), home - canned or baked goods, varied crafts, crocheted or knitted items; green plants, hanging baskets, items for the auction (antique or brand new) and help with the all day cleanup on Saturday, June 6 and the preparations early Sunday morning, June 7 set up the booths. Serving of foods -barbecue - on - bun, hamburgers, grilled sausage wrap - arounds, corn on - the - cob, Nachos, sweets booths with coffee and begin at 11:30 a.m.

Games for all ages will be open at 12:30 p.m. or when the crowd is there.

Among some of the booths will be the teddy bears, fish pond, ring - a bottle, milk bottle throw and bean bag throw. We shall have plenty of cold beverages to quench the thirst of all.

There will be free entertainment from 12 noon until 5 p.m. by musical groups includes Eddie Ray and the Polka Dots, Charles Mikeska and the Sensations, Ike Steffek's Oompah Band, Seaton Brass Band, and probably others, plus the local Beseda dancers will perform.

The auction of donated items will start at 5 p.m. Here's hoping we have many varied items to auction off.

Circle your calendar Sunday, June 7 at Seaton Star Hall, from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. or maybe later. We are located 5 miles East of Temple on State Highway 53. Make plans to come spend the day at SPJST Lodge No. 47, Seaton. We are hoping the weather is cooperative and we don't have rain that day.

Lodge 51 Ellinger To Meet Dear Members: Meeting Time! Once again we need to realize that getting together and discussing the various problems of our lodge is of upmost importance. This is especially so when we realize that our bi-annual lodge picnic is nearing.

Plans and preparation must soon begin. Many things need to be arranged, committees need to be appointed, and various plans need to be set up. This means that we need to meet in our next quarterly meeting scheduled for Sunday, June 14th at 10 a.m. in the lodge secretary's business office. Write the date and place on the palm of your hand so that you will be reminded. Of course, after it washes off you'll have to write it again.

Regardless how you keep this information on your mind, don't forget to come.

Due to the facilities being rented on the date of our regular meeting (June 14), instead Lodge 54 will hold its second quarterly meeting at its usual meeting place (Lone Star Hall) on Sunday, May 31, 1987 at 2 p.m. This will be a very important business meeting and all members are encouraged to attend. If you have opinions regarding lodge matters and you are not there to express them, we can only feel that you are in agreement with whatever is approved by the members who are present.

SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple honored 50 - year members at a meeting on Friday evening, May 8th.

A covered dish meal was served to honorees and guests.

President Navratil called on Dorothy Chervenka to give the invocation.

Lad Zatopek led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and deceased members were remembered in silent tribute.

Following the meal, President Navratil called on Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and Director Willie E. Kohutek to speak to members and guests. President Leshikar presented 50 - year pins to Leonard P. Hurta, Henry Chupik, George Schiller and Jerry Valchar; the wives of these honorees pinned the pins on their husbands. Annie Chupik and Tillie Blum also received pins.

Congratulations to these members.

Special guests were Mr. and Mrs. Howard Leshikar and son, Mr. and Willie E. Kohutek, Sidney and Dorothy Kacir and son, Daniel; also Sidney Kacir's mother, Betty Kacir, from State Headquarters.

Other guests were Patrick Vansa and Millie Schiller, also children of the George Schiller family, Joana and Ronnie and families.

A special thanks to the chefs who prepared the food, Ed and Florence Reisner, Lad and Mary Ann Zatopek, and Annie Plsek, plus to the members who brought dishes and desserts. The meal was enjoyed by all.

Lodge 139 Report

Danbury

After President Vincent Hechler called the Danbury Lodge 139 meeting to order on May 13, Secretary Tommie Lostak read the minutes of our last meeting. He also read correspondence received during the past month, discussed the planned senior citizens directory, and gave an account of the Officers' Orientation which he and Vincent Hechler attended in Belton.

Financial Secretary Helen Filipp gave her report and informed the members of the demise of W.D. Evans. She also stated that members Helen Brittain and Stacy Starr had recently been released from the hospital.

After his report, Treasurer Lonnie Lostak detailed the highlights of the Nashville trip made by the top thirty SPJST sales representatives. An item of interest was the performance of member Gladys Lostak in a jitterbug exhibition at the American Grandstand in Opryland.

Plans were made for President Hechler to present Jarad Vrazel with the first Lodge 139 scholarship at the Danbury High School awards ceremony on May 25th.

The members again voted to make the lodge's yearly donation of $500 to the Danbury Volunteer Fire Department in appreciation of the department's excellent service to the community.

The possibility of building a lodge meeting hall was discussed.

A social was held upon adjournment of the meeting.

Country Lodge 185 9 New Braunfels

Members of Hill Country lodge will meet at Eagles Hall on Thursday, June 4 at 8 p.m.

All members are urged to attend in order to plan work schedules for the Bavarian Polka Fest. Our lodge will work the food booth at the festival as one of our fund - raising projects for this year. The Bavarian Polka Fest will be held June 6th at the Bavarian Village and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church Recreation Hall and will feature 12 hours of polka and waltz music provided by six of the top Texas polka bands.

Seaton Choral Group Meets Dear Members: We have been meeting this spring as announced but the number of members are usually 10 or 8. We talked about having a picnic in the near future, but we need more members present to make the decision.

We will meet on Tuesday, June 9th and June 23rd, so please make plans to come and sing the favorite songs and plan the picnic, too.

The members voted to not meet in July and August, so it is vital that the next meetings are well attended.

Enjoying a cold brew and fellowship in the shade of the pavilion Activities started with Lodge President Gene Landry introducing each of the Board members and their spouse. Gene expressed a word of appreciation to all who had donated their time and talents in constructing the pavilion.

In addition to the Board of Trustees, Gene also recognized Buck Laquey, Fred Klaus, and Norman Fuessel for their contributions in building the pavilion.

Attending the ceremonies were a number of local dignitries including Judge William Lott, Judge Timothy Maresh, county Commissioner Leroy Mehevec, and SPJST Supreme Ldodge President Howard Leshikar.

After the ribbon - cutting ceremony, a barbecue brisket nd sausage meal was served, and, as everyone who was there will attest, the new barbecue pits do a very good job.

Lodge 187 Ribbon-Cutting Ceremonies Held A ribbon - cutting ceremony was held at Lodge 187 on April 26th to commemorate the completion of thte new barbecue pavilion.

Dear Members: The other day a man became peeved while walking his twin girls down the street when passerby patted them on the head and asked if they were twins; his answer was: "No, I have two wives."

The lodge's regular monthly meeting was held Monday, May 11th at the hall. A lot of discussion was about the burglary of the lodge building in April and what can or needs to be done to avoid another in the future. It is very sad when things are stolen after the members worked so hard to make the lodge a success.

This month's winner of the $10 door prize was Jeanne Roznos, but Jeffery Bailie missed winning $5 by not being

at the meeting or $25 if he had made all of the meetings this year.

This year the high school graduate is Shelby Sill. Congratulations, Shelby may this be the most important day of the rest of your life. The lodge presented her with a $50 gift.

Graduation is the day when a student feels they have learned just about everything only to find out in today's world you never learn everything but that you keep on learning every day the rest of your life.

Some people think too many meetings are held simply because it has been a month since the last one, so come on out and make the next one something different than the last one.

The next meeting will be June 8th that is the second Monday of the month so be there and see and hear how your lodge is doing and give your suggestions as how to improve it. The officers need your help and ideas in order to do the things that you like or would like to have done.

Bryan-College Station Dear Members: The quarterly meeting of Lodge 189 was held on March 8th at 2:15 p.m.

Treasurer Joseph Polasek read a letter to the membership regarding their donation to the local Cheer Fund.

There was one new member and two transferees accepted into the lodge at this time, namely, Kenneth J. Rieger, Agnes Best and Paul Best.

Our next meeting will be held on June 14th at 2 p.m. at the KC Hall in Bryan.

The youth club, headed by Sister Lora Maybry, will host an outdoors party for the handicapped children at their facility at the Lighthouse of Houston on Friday, June 26 starting at 11 a.m.

Our youth members plan to bring hot dogs, punch or some cooling refreshing drink to cook down the hot dogs and, naturally, what would an outing of this kind be without toasted marshmallows, cookies and who knows, maybe some popcorn.

The Lighthouse has a very nice swimming pool and our youth of Lodge No. 88 are invited to bring swim wear and enjoy themselves.

We at Lodge No. 88 have a very active youth program and one of their projects for this year is collecting clothing and shoes for the Covenant House of Houston. The Covenant House is a haven for homeless children who for a number of reasons have been forced to leave their homes because of intolerable circumstances. it's so encouraging to know that our youth at Lodge No. 88 are very sensitive to the needs of others who are less fortunate and are so willing and eager to help "hurting kids."

And who else other than our own Sister Lora Maybry who is behind all of these good things that her youngsters are doing and planning to do.

We, at Lodge No. 88, thank you so much, Sister Lora, for the wonderful job that you are accomplishing with our youngsters in teaching them Benevolence -- Humanity -Brotherhood, and we also realize how demanding your duties as youth leader are, not forgetting that you also have two small children at home who also you have to share time with.

Here's hoping a very successful party for the handicapped children on June 26th.

Birthday Club Of Lodge 83 The Birthday Club Sisters met for their regular monthly meeting on May 13, 1987.

President Rita Alexander opened the meeting with Pearl Hanka reading the minutes for Secretary Rosalee Kostom who was with her husband, Tim and brother, Louis Hanus and wife, Olita on a cruise through the Panama Canal.

It seems like a delightful trip.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the financial report for April.

Mary Kosut, our sunshine lady, gave a report on the many birthday and get well cards she sent. We have many ill club members. With all the prayers being offered, all will be back with us soon.

Our known sick are Louise Chudej, Minnie Bravenec, Emily Bily, also Imo. Lero has missed the last two meetings due to eye trouble. Florena Taake had shoulder surgery and is recuperating at home.

Vice President Edna Froehlich asked for four cooks for June.

Delores Condon, Ticket Committee chairman, gave a short report. she stated she needed some help, so sisters do help her.

President Rita Alexander asked the Birthday Club members to bring pastry for June 7th Splash Day and Homecoming. I would like to ask for pastry from our Lodge 88 members; we do not have enough club members to supply enough for so many people, so please help the Birthday Club members in this money - making project. Lillie Spies is in charge of this booth and needs help badly.

We were so happy to have Lillian Finn attending our meeting; she had been very ill for some time, but with the Grace of God is doing quite well, now. Keep it up, Lillian. Also, Marie Pokluda was back with us for the first time, since Mr. Jimmie died.

Della Kadlecek announced, at this point, that she would have surgery on May 18th. We wish her the best.

"Happy Birthday" was sung for Sisters Willie Mae Stang, Agnes Pederson, Josephine Buri and Helen Valcik who is in the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No II in Needville, Texas.

The Men's Club of SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston, will sponsor a benefit dance on Friday, July 10, 1987 in the Chandelier aliroom it for the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT).

Music will be furnished by the Central Texas Sounds (formerly the Eilinger Combo) and they will be playing for the benefit dance starting at 8:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m.

All profits from the dance will be given to the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas.

Friendship Club Of Ft. Worth Report Dear Members and Friends: Twenty - nine members and three children enjoyed dinner at Furr's Cafeteria. Tables were in a group section, and each member had a choice of his/her favorite food and enjoyed a delicious dinner.

After everyone had finished the meal, the members returned to the regular meeting center. A brief meeting was called to order by Vice President Rose Steinman due to the illness of President Maria Tesar. We express get well wishes to our president after undergoing back surgery on May 14th.

The May birthday members were Anna Johnson, Virgil Dockery, Mollie Sladovnik , Andy Sustala, Mary Dunlap and my mother, Mrs. Frances (Tyrek) Tirk, who will be 87 years of age on May 31st.

Hostesses for the June meeting will be Louise Oujesky, Josephine Bugaj and Genevieve Earle.

Rose Steinman was the door prize winner of a beautiful pot holder with a matching towel' donated by Ima Lou La Plant.

Our congratulations are sent to Renee and Joe Dolkos to whom their first child was born, a girl, Jennifer Renee. Proud grandparents are Sylvia and Rudy Dolkos.

Also, we express our congratulations to our member, Louise Oujesky, who received a 50 year membership pin from the KJZT Grand Lodge during a district meeting in Abbott, Texas on Sunday, May 17th.

Our condolences to our President Maria Tesar and to the August Kubecka, Sr. family of Shiner, Texas on the loss of their father who passed away on April 26th. Mr. Kubecka had celebrated his 100th birthday in November, 1986.

In April the first successful annual Polka Festival was held at Ernie's Polka Palace near El Reno, Oklahoma. The sponsors of the festival reported that dancers from at least 20 states were represented. The Pete Weiss band of Tulsa, Oklahoma played there and was one of the favorite dance bands. They will play at the Westfest on Labor Day Weekend (Saturday and Sunday). It was an enjoyable weekend spent with Bessie and Gilbert Kalich of Dallas and many newly made friends.

On May 17th, a host of friends and relatives gathered at the lakeside home of Lad Maly in Azle, Texas. Now we know how Lad spends much of his time. It has to be fishing because there was an abundant amount of fresh fried fish served to many friends who came from Oklahoma, Dallas, Ennis, West and surrounding towns. The special occasion was a surprise birthday party

for Lad's sister, Lillie Mobley. At the same time, a special tribute was given to Johnnie Krajca of Ennis, Texas for bringing polka music into our homes every Sunday.

We wish to convey our congratulations to all the 1987 graduates. May they move into higher leatning opportunites or accept honorable positions in today's work force.

Also to the dedicated school teachers, we wish a much deserving restful summer.

Circle Of Czech Women

Our meeting held on May 7th was called to order by President Anne Zvolanek after the pledge to the flag.

Thirty - three members were present.

Our 15 guests were Bob Zvolanek, Alvin Elsik, Phil Reames, Julius Podhrasky, Arnold Vrla, Frank Noska, Frank Houzvicka, Roy Alholm, Charlie Kocian, Dianne Malooly, Jessica, Anne Hoffman, Stanley Vrla, Harold Champion and Ken Vrla.

Minutes of our April meeting were read and approved.

Treasurer's report was given concerning donations to our Circle, namely, Rose Kopecek and Martha Malooly contributed to our fund; Dorothy Reznik made a donation in memory of her mother Marie Urban; and Martha Malooly in memory of her mother, Rose Holitak; Zdenka Skotak made a crocheted collar and sold tickets; the monies from the money also went into our Circle Fund.

Our books were audited by Arnold Vrla and Phil Reames. Our Treasurer Vicki Kohn was complimented for keeping excellent books.

Correspondence this month was as follows: Thank you notes from Helen Oates, Libbie Smith, Mary Nesuda and Ella Bartos. Letters received were from Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, Windmere Jewelry, Senior Citizens Greater Dallas, and Lyric Opera of Dallas. Greetings were relayed from Lydia Dirkx, Hattie Ground, Mildred Voss, Josie Kankrlik and Vlasta Cerovska from Czechoslovakia.

Membership report given by Bertha Malik informed us of two new address changes, namely, Floy Pokladnik, 202 County Road 213, Forney, Texas 75126; and Suzanne Novak, 1214 High Mesa Drive, Garland, Texas 75042.

Announcements were made as follows: Stacie Athas invited all to attend the KJZT No. 108 anniversary on June 14th at the Catholic Czech Club. Bertha Podhrasky informed us of the movie presently being shown at the Inwood Theater entitled "My Sweet Little Village." She said it was a very entertaining movie and suggested we all make an effort to go out to see it. Bessie Kalich quoted prices for printing our membership books.

Mildred Chervenka informed us of the charter bus fee to Ft. Worth. We will decide whether we will go by bus or cars when we visit the Ladies' Circle in Ft. Worth.

News of our members -- Anne and Bob Zvolanek have a guest Miroslav Knizek from Czechoslovakia.

Miroslav is Bob's relative. Sister Rose Urban was honored by her family on her 85th birthday recently. Sorry I had to miss the big party, but Aunt Rose sent me a card with photos and all the details. My Aunt Mary Urban who is in the Doctor's Nursing Center also celebrated her 85th birthday in April. Congratulations to Mildred Chervenka and her husband, Calvin, who were crowned queen and king of the Ennis Polka Festival this year.

Congratulations also to all the high school and college graduates: My nephew, Adrian Muehlstein, is graduating from Grapevine High School with a scholarship. My niece, Lisa Reznik, is graduating from Bishop Lynch High School. If any of you sisters have news within your families, please inform me. We always like to know what is happening with your loved ones.

Class At Alief

Alief Evening School under auspices of AISD (Alief Independent School District) is, again, offering a Conversational Czech course at Hastings High School. The location of this school is between Bellaire Blvd. on the south and Alief - Clodine on the north on the southwest side of the intersection of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the community of Alief.

One of our YC members is giving an Easter basket to a resident at West Rest Haven.

Here we have another YC member giving an Easter basket to a resident at West Rest Haven.

They also held an election of new officers for the coming year, namely: President -- Kevin Dobecka, Vice President -- Lanette Hykel, Secretary -- Keith Hykel, Treasurer -- Tammi Dobecka, Reporter -- Sharon Hrabal.

On April 17 the club members' bake sale was very good. I want to thank everyone for donating toward the bake sale and working.

The clubbers made Mother's Day gifts and they were given to each mother during our lodge meeting.

A few members of Lodge 6 attended the District III meeting at Lodge 35 in Elk. The youth club meeting was well attended and the program was good.

I would like to have the YAD cards

by May 29th so I can send them to our DYC. Our lodge and youth club meetings will be held on May 31st, so be sure and don't forget the meeting.

Tammi Dobecka brought the birthday cake for the month of May, and Sharon Hrabal will bring one for June.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood YC Meeting The Youth Club of Lodge 6 held their monthly meeting Friday, May 15, 1987.

Correspondence was read from Sister Willie Mae Schuetz and Sister Peggy Dobecka.

Dear Readers, Our last monthly meeting of the Dime Box Youth Club was held on Sunday, May 17, 1987 at 1 p.m.

President Susan Spacek called the meeting to order. Flagbearer Matthew Ford led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Trudy Krenek called the roll and read the minutes of the last monthly meeting. There were 23 members, 2 social members, 9 adults, and 2 visitors present. The visitors were Debra Robb and Ryan Wubenhurst. Welcome to our club!

Treasurer Jennifer Gold gave the report on how many checks and deposits we have made. She also reported our balance.

For the Western Week of Dime Box, we held a booth where we sold barbecue and made a total of $64.

Under new business we held election of officers. They are as follows: President -- Trudy Krenek, Vice President -- Susan Spacek, Secretary -Jennifer Gold, Treasurer -- Scott Whitsel, Reporter Keith Spitzenberger, Sergeant - at - Arms -Kurt Pharis and Mike Whitsel For flagbearer there were so many people who wanted to be it that we just decided to switch off every month so that everyone would get the opportunity. When we were elected to an office, we had to tell about our old office and what we did and what it meant to us so the new officer would know what it is all about.

Also elected was a Telephone Committee. They are as follows: Monica Spitzenberger, Amy Brown, Matthew Ford and Shawna Lawhon.

The officers above are the 1987 1988 term. We ask them and everyone of them to help in every way possible to fulfill their position. The meeting was adjourned and everyone received a free soda.

Dear Readers, The May 13, 1987 meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Christy Marek.

Amber Geistman and Tracey Chervenka led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. The roll was then called by Secretary Kim Schneider. There were 24 members present and 4dults. Next, the minutes were read by the secretary.

Janet Marek gave the treasurers report and the balance was $224.62.

Our fund - raising project will be a ticket sale. We will be giving away a half of beef from Green's Sausage House in Zabcikville, Texas. The youth members are selling the tickets.

The drawing will be held July 8, 1987.

On June 14, we will be having a 'fun day" at the Lions Park in Temple. We will find out more about this at the next meeting.

Our Youth Leader Rose Harvell gave us our YAD cards. Lodge 24 will be hosting YAD this year on July 12th.

Everyone please make an effort to enter. Camp forms were also handed out.

Before our meeting was adjourned, we elected new officers for the 1987 88 year. The results are as follows: President -- Janet Macek, Vice President -- Christy Marek, Secretary -- Susan Holtman, Treasurer -- Kristie Waits, Reporter -- Melanie Zavodny.

Congratulations to all the new officers and thanks to last year's officers who did a tremendous job.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m. Door prizes were won by Kim Hubnik and Gary Coots. "Happy Birthday" to Kim Schneider who had a birthday on May 14th.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Our May Youth Club meeting was held Thursday, May 14, 1987. It was called to order by President Lee Ptlughaupt at 7:12 p.m. There were 23 members present that night at the meeting. We also had our monthly bake sale. This month, our bake sale benefitted "The Lighthouse For The Blind."

Our Youth Leader Lora Mabry began the meeting with the election of officers. The newly - elected officers of Lodge 88 Youth Club are as follows: President -- Crystal G. Wallace, Vice President -- Darlene K. M igl, Secretary -- Marlene A. Migl, Treasurer -- Karl Pflughaupt, Sergeant - at - Arms -Jeremy Furstenfeld, Reporter -- Chris Dugas.

During our meeting, we also discussed a Social Committee, Scrapbook Committee, and Get Well Committee members. Congratulations to all!

The month of June will be a very busy month for our youth; we have many entertaining as well as worthwhile projects planned ahead.

We begin the month with the LIT Retreat on June 5 - 7 for members 15 to 18 years old. Then we have Splash Day on June 7 where the youth will have a snowcone booth. District V YAD will be on June 14, in Pasadena, at Lodge 172. Be sure to come and support all of our very talented Youth Club members; next, we will go to a hot dog social on June 26th. Don't forget about camp. This year it will be at Camp Wagon Wheel on July 13 - 16 in Caldwell, Texas where we all will enjoy plenty of sun, horseback riding and swimming. Hope to see you all at these exciting upcoming events.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 32 of Victoria, Texas, on behalf of the officers and the entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of RUBY VALCHAR ROKYTA, who passed away Wednesday, April 29, 1987 at her residence.

A homemaker, she was born February 12, 1922, in Colorado County, Texas to the late Jerry J. and Annie Malinovsky Valchar. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and the Port Lavaca VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She had been a member of SPJST since 1976 and a member of the Victoria Czech Singers.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 1 at 3 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Richard Mayerhoff officiating. Burial was in Colonial Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Rosewood Funeral Chapels.

Pallbearers were William Neiser, Wayne and L.J. Rokyta, Robert and Gary Valchar and Jerry Lange.

Surviving are her husband, Frank A. Rokyta of Victoria; three daughters, Ruby Mae Wilson of Conroe, Gloria McCormick of Victoria, Marion Noska of Houston; two sons, Marvin Rokyta of Spring and Franklin Rokyta of Victoria; two sisters, 011ie Kozlowski of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Milady Ermis of Weimar; two brothers, Jerry Valchar of Temple and Johnnie Valchar of Schulenburg; and ten grandchildren.

Sister Rokyta will be missed by all of us who loved her. May she rest in eternal peace.

Survivors include his wife, Jerlene (Krizan) Lenart; two sons, Edward Joe Lenart of Irving and John Lenart of New Jersey; four daughters, Mrs. Michael (Patricia) Barnehall of Grand Prairie, Mrs. Hoyt (Cathy) Jaynes of Grapevine, Mrs. Donny (Barbara) Kennedy and Kristy Lenart, both of Irving; a brother, Raymond Lenart of Abbott; a sister, Mrs. Leo (Evelyn) Sulak of Lake Granbury; and 10 grandchildren.

He was born September 5, 1903, in Lavaca County, Texas. He was the son of the late John and Frances Matusek Woytek. He was a retired farmer.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Wednesday, May 6 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville. The Rev. Celestino Say officiated. Burial followed in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.

Pozdeji jsme nav gtivili domov Franti gka Macinky, kde jsme poznali jeho man2elku, deti a take jeho maminku, ktera nam dala krasne ruene vygivane gatky. ZvIaltni je to co nosil Franti gkiiv otec.

Na veeefu jsme byli v dome Ladi a Hany Bravencov9ch, ktefi bkvaji v Bfezi; potom nas vzali do vinn9ch sklepu Pavla Bravence a tam jsme si povidali; on ma veliky sklep s vinem a moc dobreho vineeka.

Na druh9 den Tibor Jano g nas vzal do Bratislavy, kde on uei mlade 16-lets tanec. Clenove Podlu2an tancili s nimi.

Take tam meli v9stavku, malby, rueni ozdobene veei na posouzeni, kter9 ma lepgi.

Pozdeji, po dobrem jidle, jsme si prohledli Bratislavu a koupili dareeky.

Veeer zase ke Grofov9m, kde podavali dobroty a dali nam krasnou panenku v kroji z Velk9ch Bilovic; tato panenka ma zvla gtni misto v nagem domove a jsme hrdi, 2e ji maple, take jsme poznali jejich syny Roberta a Leoge.
