In the Vestnik issue dated April 8, 1987, page 8, column 2, at the end of Br. J. Karas' first part of the article about Ladislav Vycpalek, (above: To be continued, etc.) a small rectangular piece of paper accidentally blotted out some of the words. We thank Mrs. Earl Helm of Houston for her nice letter calling our attention to it and her interest in Br. Karas' contributions.

We found the "culprit" still stuck to the print and reprint that part of the article here. We regret the error.

Reprint follows: Ladislav Vycpalek used contrapuntal forms even in the songs: Mir (Peace) is a vocal fugue; Hlidka (The Watch) is a vocal chaconne. --- What is a chaconne? It is a stress on second beat, typically consisting of continuous variation based on repeated succession of cords. (It developed originally from the slow dances, 3 beats and measure.)

Vycpalek's harmonic texture derives almost entirely from contrapuntal complications. He did not have any fear of extreme dissonances: consecutive dissonant formations are frequent and, especially in the interwar year, there is considerable bitonal tension and many passages of momentary atonality occur. The lack of clear diatonic polarity in his music meant that the Sonata form had little appeal.

How do you find a good doctor?

For most of life's usual aches and pains, almost any family physician will do. But if you have a serious medical problem -- and you will sooner or later -- you will want to be sure your doctor is qualified to treat that particular condition. An estimated 30 percent of physicians who call themselves specialists are not formally certified to practice in their fields. Perhaps one in every eleven doctors is either incompetent or impaired by drugs or alcohol. A handful are not doctors at all, but out - and - out frauds.

People you know can often supply names of physicians they trust. If you need a specialist, your regular doctor can offer names. Most hospitals and medical schools operate referral services for staff doctors. You also can get free advice from local medical societies or private referral services. A medical society, however, may tell you only that the doctor is licensed, has paid his or her membership dues and has no outstanding complaints. A referral service can often tell you the doctor's hospital affiliation, medical school, residency, specialty, fees and something about how he or she treats patients. That's fine -- but most services list only doctors who work with client hospitals or who pay for their own listings.

Once you have a likely candidate, talk to the doctor before signing on.

Most doctors will consult with you, though some may bill you for the time.

Try to gauge whether the doctor's treatment style is one you'd find comfortable. For example, will the doctor tell you as much about your health as you need to know -- or as little? Does the doctor welcome second opinions? How do this doctor's fees compare with those of other physicians? Does the office accept medicare payments? How long do patients have to wait for appointments? And once you arrive for an appointment, how long do you have to wait in that office -- and then in the examining room? How are night and weekend emergencies handled?

Will the doctor advise you over the phone, meet you at the office or send you to a hospital emergency room?

If a doctor practices a specialty, find out whether he or she is board certified. Certification is voluntary, but it indicates that besides medical school and residency, a doctor has had at least three years of specialized training. Sources such as the American Board of Medical Specialties' "Compendium of Certified Medical Specialists" and the American Medical Association's "American Medical Directory," both found in many libraries, list doctors' credentials. ***

High - school students planning to visit college campuses this summer may want to reconsider. True, colleges are uncrowded in the summer, admissions' officials have more time to talk and the trip can be combined with a family vacation. But it is also true that the majority of professors and students, like you, are on vacation.

The best time to get a feel for campus life is during the busy school year. If you must visit in the summer, try to schedule your trip during the last half of August, when the fall semester is getting under way on many campuses.

To help students plan a successful trip, the College Board has published a new book, "Campus Visits and College Interviews," by Zola Dincin Schneider, available in public libraries and bookstores. ***

Excerpts From Minutes Of The Second Regular Quarterly Meeting The meeting was called to order at 1:30 p.m. with all Supreme Lodge members present: Howard B. Leshikar, Pres.

`State Youth Director - SYD Sue Meadows gave her report on youth activities.

NEW BUSINESS SPJST Calendars - Consideration was given to three bids on the 1988 SPJST Calendar. The low bid was accepted on motion duly passed.

It was decided to update information from the 1987 calendar and to include a current picture of the Home Office Staff.

Lotteries - There was a review of the matter of lottery type of money raising promotional activities which are made an offense by Texas law and illegal under federal law if conducted by mail or any means involving interstate commerce.

Museum - On motion duly adopted, Thelma Bartosh was named museum curator.

The agenda for the meeting was set and recess was taken until April 7th at 8:30 a.m. to allow time for committees LO meet to formulate recommendations. The committees scheduled to meet were Products Committee, Fraternal Activities Committee and Financial Planning Committee. An appraisal information seminar was scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Local Lodge - Consideration was given to a request from an SPJST Lodge for permission to meet quarterly instead of monthly. The request was not approved because the Supreme Lodge was interested in keeping lodges active.

MINUTES - The minutes of the January 5 - 7, 1987 Supreme Lodge meeting were considered and accepted as presented on motion duly passed.

Editor Rudy Sefcik arrived at 4:20 p.m. to visit the meeting.

Reports - The Supreme Lodge officers' reports were acknowledged to be placed on record.

OLD BU SIN ESS Reactivating Lodges - There was an exchange of ideas concerning the reactivation of inactive lodges.

A Plan For The Future - There was considerable discussion about goals and objective for the organization and a clear image of a plan for the future that can be communicated to our membership.

Sales Incentive Trip - It was agreed to book hotel accommodations in Las Vegas for the 1988 sales incentive trip.

Orientation - It was agreed to have coffee available at orientation at UMHB from 9 - 9:45.

IRA Audit - Report was made on disagreement with the IRS position that our mortgage program for members is unrelated business. After discussion it was decided to appeal our position that the mortgage benefit is related business to the IRS Regional level.

It was further decided Legal Advisor Kacir, Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska consultant Joe Flori represent the SPJST at the IRS Regional appeal.

Directors' and Officers' Liability - The policy came up for renewal and, on motion made and duly passed, it was decided to renew the policy and pay the increased premium.

Recess for lunch was taken from 12 noon until 1:30 p.m.

Litigation/Bankruptcies/Pending Foreclosures - Report was made on tax suits, bankruptcies and pending foreclosures.

New Member Referral Program - A proposal was considered and referred back to the committee for further study.

Control of Certificate - The proposal for control of certificate of a juvenile member was reviewed and approved.

The form will apply to all certificates Issued after this date.

New Plan of Insurance - It was agreed to develop current rates on a self sustaining 20 - year payment life plan for a minimum of $2,000 and $5,000 for consideration in the July Supreme Lodge meeting.

Editor Sefcik - Editor Sefcik was given the opportunity to share his comments with the Board.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:25 p.m. until 8:30 a.m. April 8, 1987.

Computers For Field Representatives After consideration, authorization was granted to purchase 3 lap held personal computers for the 3 field representatives.

Yellow Page Listings - It was decided to discontinue the out - of - town yellow page phone listing.

Mission/Goals and Objectives Consideration was given to proceeding with work on a plan for future direction of the Society. This plan could then be communicated to the leaders and members to obtain statewide commitment to and support for our plans.

A motion was adopted that a committee be selected to get input from the SL officers to begin working on the goals and objectives for the Society including a mission statement and plans for obtaining the goals.

It was decided to set size of the committee at the number of three. The following directors volunteered and were approved.

The Delinquent Loans recommendations for action on delinquent loans was considered and approved.

Minutes of Supreme Lodge Officers' Meetings - The minutes of SL officers' meetings held concerning investments were approved.

First Quarter Investments - The investments as listed in the Secretary Treasurer's report were ratified on motion carried.

SPJST Mortgage Rates - The mortgage rates were left unchanged. The rates could be changed by a mail poll.

Convention Committee - Suggestion was heard about the possibility of selecting a Convention Committee to plan activities and arrangements for the 1988 SPJST Convention. Action was postponed to the July SL meeting.

The next Supreme Lodge meeting was scheduled to begin on July 13th beginning at 9 a.m.

Changes In Mortgage Rates The SPJST has raised its interest rate for residential and commercial mortgages 3/4 percent. residential

10-1/2 percent for 1 to 10 - year term 11 percent for 11 to 15 - year term The SPJST change is the result of a sudden upward surge in interest rates in recent weeks. It was necessary to catch up with what has been happening in the market the past few weeks.

But the SPJST is not alone in raising interest rates. Most lenders have raised their rates and the Federal Home loan mortgage corporation recently said that the average rate for 80 percent conventional mortgages was 10.52 the previous week.

Other SPJST loan requirements and conditions remain unchanged. We do require that at least one applicant be an SPJST member for at least one year and that the applicants have at least $25,000 insurance in force at the time the application is submitted.

The SPJST can handle loans to purchase real estate, long - term financing of construction and improvements and refinancing of valid more loans.

6, Cottonwood Meeting

Dear Readers: Our Lodge 6 meeting was called to order Tuesday, May 4 at 8 p.m. by President Johnnie Krizan.

Sister Karen Kroll led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and the SPJST Motto. All remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed members, Brother Alvin Schuetz who passed away Sunday, April 19 in the VA Hospital at Temple, and Brother Edward Lenart of Irving who passed away Saturday, May 2 at Irving Hospital; to these families, we express deepest sympathy and may our brothers rest in peace.

Sister Barbara Hykel read the minutes of our last meeting and other reports were also given by the treasurer and financial secretary. All reports were approved as read.

Correspondence was a thank you card from the Alvin Schuetz Family.

Our last Board of Trustees' meeting was held May 1 and business brought up was about our Lodge 6 annual picnic coming up on July 19; those on the committee are Brother Robert and Sister Lydia Dobecka -- advertising, Barbara and Edward Hykel -- auction, also George and Josie Mae Straten and all the others are the same as last year.

The next Board meeting will be held May 29 at 8 p.m. and our lodge meeting will be Sunday, May 31 at 1 p.m., with a meal served before the meeting.

It was approved to build our booth on wheels for the Westfest celebration.

Robert Dobecka, Edward Hrabal and Ronnie Kroll will do the building.

All mothers were honored at our last meeting; gifts were butterflies with handkerchiefs and door prizes by our youth club members.

Our 1987 membership pictures that were taken on April 5 at our Easter celebration are ready. We had a big attendance even thought it was a rainy day. On May 17, Pool and Domino Tournaments were held at the lodge.

Dear Members and Readers: At 2 p.m., on Sunday, May 3, 1987 President Dennis Hermis called our monthly meeting to order. We had 33 members and 5 guests present at this meeting.

All stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Secretary Alice Jochen held roll call of officers and read the minutes from the previous meeting, which stood approved. All officers' reports were read.

Sick Committee reported that Keith Kieschnick and Emil Valka were in the hospital.

New members for April were James Tomastik, Bertin Doskocil, Tiffani Sharp and Stephanie Wilson (4 new members); additional insurance was for Elizabeth Hermis, Bruno R. Patke, Lillian Mae Patke, Lillian Schmidt, W.J. Schmidt, Ann M. Wilganawski, Christopher W. Behrens and. Joyce M. Malenosky. There were four new members and eight additional insurance applicants credited by Sales Representatives Robert Kieschnick (2), Dennis Hermis (1), and Sidon Tumis (9).

Brother Jerry Prochazka, District V director, was present at this meeting and he spoke to our membership.

Brother Sidon Tumis spoke on the activities of the Qrientation Day in Belton on May 2nd.

Our capsule prize for $40 was unclaimed due to the absence of Charles Thomas Mikus. Next month's prize will be $50.

The $5 attendance prize went to the oldest member present at our meeting.

Congratulations to Brother Rudy Cernuch.

Door prizes went to A.J. Ognoski, Agnes Becker, Ruth Kieschnick and Rosie Tumis.

154, Ft. Worth Meeting

Dear Members and Friends: Our Mother's Day dinner was a big success. A lot of delicious food was consumed.

Our meeting was short. Sister Carolyn Cleveland presented beautiful plants to our youngest mother, Sister Kelly Eaton; oldest mother, Sister Mary Hale,and she had a drawing and Sister Anna Johnson, a most deserving member, was the lucky mother.

We extend a special thank you to Brother Kent Johnson. He was a big help in the kitchen serving food and a big cleanup.

Make note of our next meeting which will be the first Sunday, June 7 at 3 p.m. (due to the Southern District Slet being held in Houston on June 12, 13 and 14).

Sisters Mary Renfro, Jeanie Mason, Rose Steinman, Carrie Milan and Mary Pavey took off early Saturday morning (May 2) for the officers' orientation in Belton. The meeting was informative and time flew by. They served a delicious lunch, it was like a banquet.

We spent the night in Waco since we were going to the District III meeting Sunday at Lodge 35, Elk. Sister Rosemary Banik invited us to come to their dance Saturday night; we enjoyed the music and visiting. Thanks to Brother Albert and Sister Rosemary Banik, Sister Dorothy Banik, Brother Richard and Sister Louise Burney for making us so welcome.

The District III meeting was enjoyed by all. Lodge 35 makes everyone feel at home. We had a delicious dinner. The attendance should have been better, but so many events were being held that weekend. Sister Mary Renfro and Mary Pavey were lucky door prize winners. After bidding our good byes, we headed for the Polka Festival in Ennis for a short stay, but we enjoyed it. We arrived home safely after driving through some heavy rains here and there. It was a most wonderful weekend.

We extend our congratulations to several of our members. Darren Williams, a graduate of Castleberry High School, has been named Salutorian of Castleberry High School Class of 1987. Darren also has the distinction of one of the first persons earning 3 letter jackets; one for Athletics for tennis, one for music in band, and an academic letter jacket.

Darren plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin majoring in physics. He also was accepted to the Longhorn Band at University of Texas. Good luck, Darren! To Tressie Jean Sanders -- she was awarded a Medallion for Handwriting. She was chosen one of four percent in Fort Worth Public Schools' Grades 3 through 12. Melissa Johnson attended the Student Council in Austin. Jill Parker was elected to vice president of the National Honor Society of Azle High School. We are proud of all of you! Carrie Ann Cleveland will be leaving from Lynchburg, Virginia on May 17 for Liberia, Africa and Holland; she is going to sing and do Puppet Ministry with the Missionaries. Good luck and get home safely!

Softball Team Report

Lodge 84, Dallas Ball season has started for the SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas, Texas Fastpitch Team. First action came in a Round - Robin Tournament in Austin, Texas.

The first game was against The Raiders, one of the hometown teams from Austin. Tommy Yates pitched a 5 - hitter and knocked in 2 runs with a double - to - lead SPJST to a 4 to 1 victory. Danny Yates and Jerry Zabojnik each drove in a run with Paul Bartos scoring twice.

The next game was a 5 to 4 loss in 8 innings by a San Antonio team, The Bucs. Longtime SPJST Pitcher Lionel Schulz pitched a gutty game despite being in the hospital only a week earlier. Jim Zoller went 4 for 4 with 2 RBIs and Kerry Goad scored 3 runs and hit a homerun. Kerry scored in the top of the 8th, but The Bucs came back with two runs in the bottom of the 8th for the victory.

The third game was one of the most exciting games in tournament history.

We played Trans - Con from Dallas 1985 State Champions and longtime local final. The time limit ran out at the end of 4 innings when SPJST scored 3 runs to tie the score at 6 to 6.

Each team scored one run in each of the next 5 innings before Trans - Con broke loose in the 10th inning. Randy Furlowe pitched all 10 innings for SPJST. There were many hitting stars as SPJST pounded out 16 hits in the slugfest. Donnie Lennox had 3 hits and 3 runs scored. Tommy Kline had 3 hits and 3 RBIs. Kerry Goad -- 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBIs. Randy Furlowe -- 2 hits, 2 runs, and Jerry Zabojnik hit a homerun. Trans - Con finally burst loose for 8 runs in the bottom of the 10th for an 18 to 10 final.

The final game was halted after 5 innings when a cold front hit and rains came. SPJST was leading 3 to 1 to win.

Tommy Yates pitched a 5 - hitter against The Austin Texans, the top team from Austin. Kerry Goad got 2 hits, scored a run and had 1 RBI. Darrel Clements and Donnie Lennox each scored a run and Roger Little had 1 RBI. Paul Bartos had 2 hits.

SPJST ended with a 3 to 2 record when The Austin Chiefs forfeited.

SPJST was to play Tex Turf from Fort

Varth, but the rains ended the tournament at that point when the playoffs were to start. It was a good tournament for SPJST and, with a couple of breaks, could have easily been 5 to 0.

Next action was scheduled by the Denton, Texas Round - Robin, April 11 - 12 with league play starting Wednesday, April 15 vs. Moody Printing of Fort Worth.

Softball Team Lodge 84, Dallas

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our annual Softball Team benefit dance held on Saturday, night, April 18 was, again, a success, although not like we had hoped for. We realized that a Saturday night before Easter Sunday is not an ideal night for a benefit dance. This was the least profitable dance of all dances, however, we did meet ends and made some profit which will carry us through the season, hopefully. We wish to thank those loyal and wonderful people who attended. We had a total attendance of 112 paid admissions, including players and wives, which speaks for itself; we are really thankful for so many attending.

We blame the time for our dance and we have already made plans to have our annual dance next year in May. It was a real fun dance and had plenty of food, fun and prizes.

Without naming any individuals, I wish to thank everyone who donated prizes for our drawing and attendance, for buying tickets and food, also for being so generous.

As I said, it was a wonderful crowd, we just needed few more of you.

I also wish to thank all the players who worked in the kitchen, door, sold tickets and pitched in; you were all great!

The orchestra, The Czech Harvesters never sounded any better; they played very good music.

We also wish to thank our mother lodge for the use of the hall and thank those members who could attend and to all members who helped us in any way they could.

The team is now playing on Wednesday or Thursday nights at Samuel Grand No. 2. I hope to have a schedule of our games in the next issue. Currently, our league record is 2 wins and 1 loss; details of our games will follow.

Lodge 88, Houston Czech Class Report The Spring - Term Czech Class at Lodge 88, Houston completed its course of study on April 27, 1987.

Throughout the ten weeks, student interest appeared to be generated anew during each session. Thirty - four were registered in February and 28 remained as regulars. Of the various reasons given for non - attendance, the obvious ones were difficult with the grammar and inability to learn pronunciation.

The last period lasted twice as long as any of the others. Two enrollees showed movies they taped from TV productions. Bill Rogers brought his tape of Czechs of Checkerboard Square and Dennis Kocich showed the Czech film from Czechoslovakia entitled: (Hasiel bal), The Firemen's Ball.

No final period is complete without the usual socializing. Not one of the 34 in attendance left hungry. Czech pastries, sandwiches and other finger foods again showed that good cooks are found in all Czech gatherings. We felt sorry for the Lodge 88 members who had to close the building, so we left at 11:30 p.m.

By W.J. "Bill" Malina Now, that spring is here many people will be enjoying the rewards of home gardens. How good it is to smell the fragrance of flowers, to taste the fresh flavor of home grown vegetables and herbs. Among the many varieties of home - grown vegetables will be the ever - popular "potato." Call them Irish potatoes, taters, spuds or any other name you wish, potatoes are one of the most widely eaten foods in the world. Over eleven billion bushels are grown annually. In addition to being used for food, potatoes are used to make alcohol, starch and some kinds of flour. In Europe, potatoes are sometimes used for cattle feed.

The white potato originated in South America on the high plateaus of Peru and Bolivia. Spanish explorers brought them to Spain in the 1550s.

The use of the potato spread throughout Europe rapidly and reached Italy, England and Ireland in the late 1580s. The potato grew so well in Ireland that it soon became Ireland's main food.

The white potato was first introduced into the United States in the early 1600s from England and Bermuda. Potatoes did not become an important crop in the United States until the early 1700s, when the Irish first migrated to America. The potato was so important a food and crop for these Irish settlers that the white potato became known as the Irish potato.

Potatoes, composed of 80 percent water and only 20 percent solid, have become more than a basic, staple food; they are also a snack food. Look on any grocery shelf and you will find all sorts of potato chips; plain or ruffled,

barbecue flavored, sour cream and onion, etc. French fries are eaten as a part of a meal as well as snack. Where would we be without the traditional potatoes and gravy or without the baked potato, stuffed with all kinds of "goodies"? Potatoes, prepared in some fashion, are served in over half of the meals eaten by Czech and German families.

Anyone who served in the Armed Forces and did K.P. knows how many potatoes are consumed by servicemen daily. He probably thought that he peeled and cleaned the entire world's production for just one meal, really he only peeled and cleaned less than a 100 - pound sack. Everyone knows that K.P. stands for "Kitchen Police," but to the one who had "potato duty" it meant "Keep Peeling."

Among the Czech - speaking people in the United States, particularily Texas, potatoes are called by at least three names: brambory, cobzole or zemaky.

Potatoes were first introduced to the Czech - speaking people of Europe by the Earl of Brandenburg. The Czech word "brambor" is derived from the Czech name for Brandenburg. The word "brambory" could easily be translated as "those Brandenburg things." There is no doubt that the European Czechs also used names, such as "zemaky" or "cobzole," for potatoes. Obviously, these names were brought to America by the immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It is understandable that during times when anti - German feelings ran high among the Czechs, they would not have wanted to use words reminding them of anything German. The word "brambory" reminded them that Germans brought this food to them and, therefore, used other names for the potato, such as "cobzole" and "zemaky."

A potato by any other name would still taste the same.

All entries must illustrate a birthday theme - Decorating shall be done on a form; not on actual cakes - The maximum size to be no larger than 9 inches in one direction and no more than 13 inches in the other direction with a maximum height of 4 inches tall. It may be any shape within the maximum size range.

- Display board shall be cardboard - Allow no more than 2 inches between the edge of the cake and the edge of the display board.

SPJST State YAD Rules Dear Parents and Youth Club Members: Summertime will soon be here and the District YADs and camps are just around the corner.

There are some new things to look forward to at the YADs this year.

There will be a Special Craft Category at STATE YAD ONLY! The category is Cake Decorating and is open to all age groups 6 - 17. Prizes and awards will be determined by the Youth Department. Watch the Vestnik for further details on how to register and compete in this Special Category.

Another exciting change to anticipate is that beginning with the 1987 YADs: First place winhers at State, except Royalty, may compete the following year in a different category or age group. EXAMPLE: A talent winner in singing could return the following year as a talent entry in dancing; a youth winning in Pictorial Arts could enter in Foods, etc. (Approved Supreme Lodge Meeting January 1987) Of special interest to teen members is the following information concerning the State Royalty winners and the high merit point winners.

MERIT POINT SCHOLARSHIP The teen from each district with the total most points over the last three years will be eligible to compete for the merit point scholarship. Each top teen will be notified by the SYD to submit a 1,000 word essay. The topic of the essay is "How Fraternalism Can...."

The winner will be selected by a panel of judges using the following criteria:

Neatness 15 Content 50 Mechanics 35 (Grammar, spelling, sentence structure) (Approved Supreme Lodge Meeting January 1987) The scholarship winner must request and use the scholarship within 2 years of their high school graduation.

ROYALTY The State King and Queen will be requested to make (4) public appearances during their reign. Two of these will be within the SPJST organization and one will be at Texas Fraternal Congress and one will be outside the SPJST organization. State Royalty will be reimbursed for gas mileage and other expenses as approved by the Head of the Youth Department. (Approved in Supreme Lodge Meeting October 1985) I've included the craft competition guidelines to help you prepare for YAD. Be sure to contact your youth leader or YC if you have any questions concerning YAD or camp.

IV Held Youth Leaders' Training

District

The home of Mr. and Mrs. William Urbanek was the meeting place for District IV 1987 youth leaders' training. Those present included Angeline Kristinek - YL Lodge 157, Henrietta Pavliska - YL Lodge 73, Linda Urbanek - YL Lodge 49, Sandra Rollwitz - Assistant YL Lodge 49, Sandra Jansa - YL Lodge 160 and District IV DYC Susan Bohnenberger.

The meeting began at 10:30 a.m. on April 25th.

Topics of discussion were the upcoming YAD which will be held June 20th in Wall, Texas, hosted by Lodge 160 San Angelo; summer camp at Camp Val Verde in McGregor -July 20 - 23; LIT Retreat the first weekend in June and general ideas, problems and questions. The changes to YAD rules were discussed and clarified.

Youth leaders were reminded of the due dates for their camp qualification forms, camp registrations and YAD cards.

A delicious meal at Lowake Steak House ended the meeting. All those present felt the day was very informative.

of Poth, Texas, who died on March 8, 1987 at the age of 67 years, 1 month and 10 days.

Sister Orts was born on January 28, 1920 in Karnes County, Texas to Jacob and Agnes Prasek. In 1923 the family moved to Poth where Martha attended elementary schools and graduated from Floresville High School. On January 14, 1950, she was married to August Leopold Orts who died on May 31, 1950. To this union, one son was born.

Sister Orts worked at and operated "Prasek's" for 47 years. She was active in civic and church endeavors and is remembered as having a witty and vibrant personality.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Martha Sassin, in 1975.

Survivors include a daughter and son - in - law, Mr. and Mrs. Bob (Martha) Johnson of Corpus Christi, Texas; one son, Adolph James Sassin of Corpus Christi, Texas; two sisters, Mary Hermis of Corpus Christi, Texas and Maggie Kristek of Yoakum, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Cecho - Moravan No. 106 of La Grange, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of VLASTA MARY MAREK, who passed away Tuesday, April 28, 1987 in an Austin hospital at the age of 82 years.

Mrs. Marek, formerly of La Grange, was employed at the Bonton Cafe for many years. For the last two years, she lived at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alfreida Otto. She was born July 3, 1904 in Fayette County, Texas to John and Johanna (Holub) Steffek.

Survivors include her son, Oscar and wife, Martha from Victoria; two daughters, Olivia Trueper, Alfreida Otto and husband, E.G. of Austin.

Mrs. Marek is also survived by three sisters, six grandchildren; and seven great - grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m.

Thursday, April 30 at Christ Lutheran Church in Austin with Rev. Ray K. Bohrer officiating. Interment followed at the Assumption Cemetery.

SPJST Rest Home No. I Held Spring Festival The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home held their annual Spring Festival on April 14, 1987. Mrs. Frances Schwenker opened the program and introduced Rev. Felix Sager who had a short Easter devotional. Mrs. Karine Gilstrap provided the background piano music for the program. Children of the Seventh Street Day Care Center modeled their Spring and Easter outfits for the style show.

The climax of the show was the crowning of the king and queen. This year's king was Eugene Oliver, 90, from Thrall, Texas. He was born in Beaukiss, Texas on March 28, 1897.

He was a farmer all his life. He has 3 daughters, Mrs. Eric Johnson from Thrall, Mrs. James Reaves from Austin, and Mrs. Dan Laxson from San Antonio. He also has 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. The queen was Julia Lightner, 96, from Taylor. She was born on December 8, 1890 in Kovar, Texas. She has one daughter, Mrs. Julia Johnson from Austin; 3 sons, Ted Lightner of Smithville, Ray Lightner of Taylor, and Ed Lightner of Denver, Colorado. She also has 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Enjoy the sun, but respect its rays. A lew simple precautions can help you avoid the sun's darker side effects: sunburn, skin damage, increased risk of skin cancer and heat - related illness.

It's really worth the effort to wear cover - ups and sunscreen lotions. For maximum protection, use screens with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15.
