Although an estimated forty percent of all adults pop a daily vitamin or mineral supplement, it is not necessary for healthy individuals who eat a balanced diet, says the American Medical Association. Evidence simply does not support the widespread belief that large doses of multivitamins ward off colds, combat chronic diseases or extend life. In fact, excessive vitamin A can cause illness, and massive oral doses of vitamin D can kill. *** Elderly patients often prefer medicines in liquid form. But liquid medications frequently contain considerable amounts of alcohol sometimes as much as 25 percent warns the Boston Collaborative Drug Surveillance Program. Taking an adult dose of such medicines is comparable to drinking a strong cocktail. Avoid mixing liquid medication with cocktails or other drugs such as sleeping pills or tranquilizers. The result could be an overdose, even death. ***

The Officers' Orientation held at the Mary Hardin Baylor University (MHBU) Saturday, May 2nd proved to be well planned and well executed by our Supreme Lodge body with all five officers and seven directors taking part. Coordinator was SL Secretary/Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and Chairman of the Board Cyrill (Sid) Pokladnik acted as moderator.

It was very informative to all local lodge officers and members present and questions from the assembly were answered by the appropriate Supreme Lodge member satisfactorily. The orientation also was good ground for a better understanding between the lodges, general membership and the Supreme Lodge. Your editor has heard only favorable comments about it to date. *** Sunday, May 3rd -- was another busy day for District III; this was the date at Lodge Nove Kvety (New Blossoms) No. 35 at Elk of the District III spring meeting. There were good reports made for the Supreme Lodge by SL Vice President Gebala and District III Director Pokladnik also District III officers and committees present at the meeting.

Your editor will leave the particulars of the meeting and names of officers elected in the district meeting to the District III secretary and/or reporters.

A delicious meal (as usual) was served by Host Lodge No. 35 at noon which was enjoyed by everyone present. The ladies are to be complimented, again! ** Sunday, May 17th -- We are reminded of the 30th anniversary celebration of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I at Taylor with open house from 2 to 4 p.m. We suggest that you make an effort, especially those in the District II area to attend this open house and see how much was accomplished at the home since its beginning. Those who were involved with professional and/or volunteer services . . during the long period for maintaining the rest home by receiving top rating on its operation, are to be highly commended for their very good management. Many taxpayers are not aware that the federal government is the nation's

You come home exhausted after a hard day's work. But at the front door, you are confronted by equally, tired and hungry children who demand your full attention -- immediately. It is a common scenario, especially in households with young kids. In 45 percent of families with children under 6, both parents now work. The question is how best to raise the kids without neglecting your job, straining your marriage or pushing yourself too hard. Salvation lies largely in organization.

Even day - to - day routine can be entertaining and educational for the kids, as well as speedy. These tips from the Home and School institute's "Survival Guide for Busy Parents" may help. Some are aimed at younger children; others work best for older youngsters. Save wear and tear in the morning by having everybody take time the night before to lay out items for the following day -- fresh clothes, schoolbooks, eyeglasses, whatever.

Besides making mornings less frantic, this idea encourages kids to think ahead. Also encourage everyone to leave brief notes to one another. It is a way for busy families to increase communication while improving the kids' reading and writing skills.

The worst time of the day in most families is between 5 and 7 p.m. Blood sugar is low, tempers run high and dinner has yet to be cooked. To help kids avoid before - supper grumpies, prepare small, nutritious snacks -bananas, raisins, peanut - butter sandwiches. Too little sleep may contribute to daytime behavior problems for the kids. Besides, putting them to bed at a regular hour gives you vital recuperation time. Most oungsters under age 10 need 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. ***

Insurance Workshops Held In District II SFM Gene McBride held workshops at Lodge 29 Taylor, Home Office in Temple, and Lodge 74 Lovelady along with District Director Willie E. Kohutek.

There were fifty sales representatives in attendance at these workshops. We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those who are not active to come join us.

It is the duty of the lodge and its members to support the sales representatives of your lodge, and help them secure new members in order to keep your lodge alive and growing.

Please urge the sales representatives of your lodge to attend the insurance seminars so that they can better serve your membership.

The spring meeting of District VI -SPJST was held at the Victoria Community Center on April 5, 1987 with Lodge No. 32 Victoria, No. 97 Placedo, No. 143 Inez, and No. 153 La Salle as hosts.

The meeting was called to order by District President Ardis Bacak at 1:15 p.m.

Flag Bearer Darren Dybala presented the colors and led everyone in the pledge to the flag.

In the absence of Victoria Lodge President Franklin Elles, Victoria Vice President Adolph Motal extended the welcome and introduced the guests, Director Matt Vanek and his wife, and Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and his wife.

District First Vice President Albert Olsovsky responded.

There was a moment of silence in respect of our deceased members, followed by Katherine Wokaty reading the list of those deceased since the last spring meeting.

District Youth Counselor Anita Roye listed some of the past activities she had participated in: Viewed camps in September, attended a State DYC workshop in November, aided Victoria Youth Club in February and in March, assisted Lodge No. 40 El Campo Hillje Youth Club. Upcoming events are a youth counselors' training session on April 11th, a youth workshop on June 5th and 6th for youth over 15 years of age, district camp at Camp Wagon Wheel in Caldwell on July 17 through 20, District YAD in Taiton on August 9th and State YAD in Temple on August 16th.

Former District Youth Counselor Janet Marek spoke a few words, complimenting Mrs. Roye and thanking her husband, Melvin, for his assistance during her time as counselor.

Roll call of district officers showed all officers present and Publication Committee Member Sophie Dybala was the only absentee from the Standing Committees. Ten lodges responded to the roll call of lodges.

Minutes were read and approved as read.

District Vice President Albert Olsovsky read the list of 50 - year members.

Anton Kellner, Jr. gave the following district treasurer's report: In the District Youth Fund, there was a balance, on September 1st, of $280.34.

Income was $100, expenses were $240, leaving a balance on April 1st of $140.34. In the General Expense Fund, there was a balance of $870.54 on September 1st, expenses were $335, leaving a balance on April 1st of $535.54.

District VI Rest Homes Director Erwin Holy gave his report. On May 17, the Taylor Rest Home will be celebrating their 30th anniversary; also $180,000 worth of improvements had been made on the Needville home.

District Director Matt Vanek brought greetings from the Supreme Lodge. He introduced Mrs. Ed Sralla, wife of the departed District VI Director. Director Vanek said, two years ago, a consultant reported that fraternals would decrease in popularity because their salesmen worked only part - time. However, due to increases in types of insurance, SPJST sold $67 million worth of insurance in 1986 compared to the $20 million usually sold. Sales classes had been held to instruct sales representatives. The mortality table had been updated and new application forms were being used. Director Vanek instructed everyone to contact Jerome Hlavaty if they had not received the forms. There would be a workshop in Belton on May 2 for all lodge officers and interested persons. A contest was being held for the top 30 salesmen to go to Nashville. Five had qualified from District VI, namely, James Bacak, Melvin Marek, Jerome Hlavaty, Frankie Vanek and Matt Vanek. The top three salesmen in the district were Jerome Hlavaty, Melvin Marek and Matt Vanek. Jerome Hlavaty, James Bacak, Frankie Vanek and Matt Vanek were in the Million Dollar Club.

Jerome Hlavaty was the top salesman with over $2 million sold. Director Vanek reminded local lodges to select a "Fraternalist of the Year" and submit their selection to the Supreme Lodge

by November 1st. Commercial loans were available on real estate and, to qualify for a home loan, a person must be a member for one year. Director Vanek concluded by congratulating the youth clubs and Anita Roye. He also spoke about the good job done by Janet and Melvin Marek. He announced a film on early immigrants would be shown on Channel 19 at 10 p.m. on April 5th. The VCR tape could also be obtained from him.

State Sales Representative Jerome Hlavaty followed with an insurance report. He said he was excited about last year's sales and sales for the first three months of this year were very good. District - wide, $1,532.000 worth of insurance was written with $670,000 issued. The top three sales representatives were Frankie Vanek, Jerome Hlavaty and Ray Pilgrim. The top three in insurance written were Jerome Hlavaty, Frankie Vanek and Leona Macha. So far this year the ritten grand total was $18,350.800; the issued g rand total was $12,679,010 and the premiums were $298.500. State Sales Representative Hlavaty said workshops in Districts VI and VII had just been completed. Policies were available for juvenile whole life from birth to 16 years of age and minimum whole life for adults (16 - 80) was $5,000. This minimum was set because funeral expenses now averaged $4,000.

There was a new plan renewal for those 16 - 65. Return interest rates for annuities are 8 percent and for Universal Life they are 9 percent. Both can be tax - deferred. All policy rates set by SPJST were competitive. State Sales Representative Hlavaty urged everyone to contact a local sales representative, the Home' Office, or him for more information.

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar congratulated the sales representatives and complimented Janet Marek and Anita Roye. All applicants for scholarships should be members for at least one year and,

beginning at this time, each applicant can win only once. President Leshikar presented checks to the district: $1,976.10 to the Youth Fund; $100 for the District VI YAD and $450 for the General Expense Fund. The heritage film, "Czechs with a Texas Checkerboard," was planned during the Sesquicentennial Year to make something that would last. President Leshikar said the film had been shown on PBS stations in Houston and Temple - Austin but the showing in Victoria was the first on a commercial station. There had been talk that the fraternal societies would lose their tax exemption status. However, in an October meeting, after several meetings, the Insurance Board seemed to look more favorable on fraternals but some changes would need to be made. On March 30, there had been a meeting on these changes. The Insurance Board determined that fraternals must have a functioning lodge system, representative type government and benefits given to members (non - profitable). Because of these mandates, President Leshikar asked the district to continue having two meetings a year. He concluded by thanking all the hard workers in the SPJST and our forefathers for setting up the organization.

The Auditing Committee of Eddie Warta and Erwin Holy reported all books were in order.

Under unfinished business, there was much discussion on whether the district continue having two meetings a year. Rita Vanek said the money in the General Expense Fund should be used.

She suggested we have a business meeting in the spring and a social in the fall, \ ith a meal. She said El Campo - Hillje lodge could be the site for the fall meeting because of its central location. Anton Kellner suggested that El Campo - Hillje could host every meeting and get the $150 due to the host lodge. Additional expenses could be taken out of district funds but he felt there should be a limit on expenditures. Leona Macha felt there should be no limit imposed and Erwin Holy suggested the district officers set the limit. Joe Nezval said District V was already having a social meeting. Adolph Motal felt these socials would give incentives to the members to attend. Anton Kellner made a motion that El Campo - Hillje host the social meeting in October with the $150 due them plus a limit of $250 more for expenses. Adolph Motal seconded it and the motion passed.

There were none so hankie Vanek made a motion to accept the slate as presented by the Nominating Committee.

William Nlareth seconded it and the motion passed.

The call was done but there were no nominations and Erwin Holy remained the director.

Lodge 4 Hallettsville To Meet Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, April 12, 1987 at the Grant Building. President Annie Vahalik called the meeting to order, followed by the pledge to the flag led by the youth.

Gaynell Chudej read a Resolution of Sympathy for our departed member, Mary Rabel.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the last meeting which were approved.

Correspondence was read and discussed. l reasurer Helen Zabransky gave her report. Youth Leaders Evelyn Holy and Gaynell Chudej also reported pertaining to their activities.

Those who attended' the District VI meeting in Victoria informed our members of the happenings in our district.

Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka then gave his report followed by adjournment.

Games were played and enjoyed.

Refreshments and lunch were served.

Ida Neubauer won the Easter Candy Guessing Game contest. Door prize winners were Irene Barcak and Victoria Zak. Our next meeting was scheduled for Sunday, May 10 beginning at 2 p.m. at the Grant Building; Mothers to be honored by the youth; also refreshments and lunch were planned to be served as usual.

ST— Lodge 13, Dime Box Meeting

Dear Members and Friends: SPJST Lodge No. 13 held their regular monthly meeting on Sunday, March 15th. President Mildred Horak called the meeting to order.

Hag Bearer Susan Spacek led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call of officers found nine officers present and four absent. Sister Dorothy Rackel read the minutes from the last meeting. They were approved as read.

Due to the absence of Sister Magdeline lselt and Sister Mary Daily, the Mortuary Fund report and treasurer's report were read by Sister Dorothy Rackel. Both were approved as read.

Communications from the Supreme Lodge was read next. Two of our members were to receive 50 - year membership pins. They are Brother John Tydlacka and Brother Charlie

Koudelka. At the time of this writing, it is with sadness in our hearts that, in fact, Brother Charlie Koudelka passed away without receiving his May his soul rest in peace.

The St. Joseph's Catholic Church will hold their annual church bazaar at our hall this year, again, on Sunday, July 26th Mark your calendar.

We had two new members to be welcomed into our lodge. They are Gary and Tobie Heidle (Davidson).

Glad to have you join us!

With no further business to discuss, the meeting adjourned with door prizes being won by Sister Doris Ford, Brother Richard Ford and Sister Susan Spacek.

Elgin Lodge No. 18 held its regular meeting on April 21, 1987. Twenty eight members attended plus our honored guest, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar.

Roll call of officers showed all to be present.

The minutes of the March meeting were read by Secretary Gilbert Kubicek. They were approved as read.

Reports were then given by the other officers as well as the committee chairpersons.

President Dale Kessel thanked the busload of members who attended the District II spring meeting in Lovelady. The meeting was well represented by our lodge. Brother Leslie Gustafson was re - elected as District 11 secretary. Leslie has done a super job and we are all glad to see him remain in that office.

We were pleased to have President Leshikar visit us at our meeting. His knowledge and experience with the SPJST was shared with us. Thanks for your time (we know how precious your time is) and you are always welcome at Lodge No. 18.

After some discussion of our upcoming May Fete, the meeting was adjourned.

Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29 held their regular mouthy meeting on Sunday, April 12th at 4 p.m.

President Melvin Steger called the meeting to order and the members recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Minutes of our previous meeting were read and approved. The treasurer's report and Property Committee's reports were also given.

Sister Edith Shiller gave the audit report for January, February and March.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The May 3 lodge meeting was called to order by lodge President Jerry Pechal at 2 p.m. with 100 members and 14 visitors.

Flag Bearers Heidi Schroeder and Tracy Klusacek led the pledge to the flag. We remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Brother John Adams who passed away recently. To the family, we express deepest sympathy and may our brother rest in eternal peace.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, sales representatives and trustees. She also read the minutes of our previous meeting and these were accepted with minor changes.

Correspondence included a letter from SL President Howard Leshikar regarding a Senior Citizens' directory, a thank you note from Sister Gladys Marek for all courtesies shown her since she broke her ankle, get well cards, visits, food, etc., and an invitation to Scott and White Hospital for a retirement party for May 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. for Sister Ann Hejl who is retiring after 26 years.

The new count is 39 members. They may outgrow the Youth Room at this rate. They had election of officers for the next year. (I didn't get all of the names written down, therefore, their reporter will have this in a future issue); also, four members had perfect attendance for the last year.

The next meeting will be in May, again, because our picnic will be held on our regular lodge date. Remember the meeting date is Sunday, May 31 at 2 p.m. There will be a covered dish supper again; this time to honor high school graduates who were active in the Youth Club.

Chairman of the (Family Game Night Committee) Social Committee Tim Reese set the date of Friday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. for the first meeting.

Committee members who volunteered were Dan Hejl, Dan Balusek, Ann Hejl and Adeline Kohutek. Members, bring a covered dish and see what the committee will have to offer in the way of games. Everyone is invited.

Next on the agenda was the awarding of the 50 - year pins to seven members who came to the meeting.

Corsages or boutonnieres were pinned on arrival at the hall before the meeting. Those present were Vlasta Divis, Miladie Jecmenek, W.E. Kosarek, Frank Sefcik, . Louis A. Sirney, Georgie Sodek and Lydia Vanicek. Brother Howard Leshikar spoke to the honorees and guests. 6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, May 13, 1987 the honorees and Sister Dolores Skrabanek pinned the pins on. Each recipient expressed how glad they were to be here. There was a special table with a yellow centerpiece, candles and a cake for the honorees (baked by Sister Judy Pechal) at which the recipients were seated. Lodge President Pechal, SL President Leshikar District 11 Director Willie E. Kohutek congratulated these members. They remained seated until the meeting ended. Nick Morris spoke briefly in Czech.

Congratulations to the honorees, we wish the other three recipients would have come, too.

Birthday celebrants in May are Alfred' Klusacek, Patsy Koslovsky, Henry Mares, Martha Wofford, Lillian Hejl, Mary Vasicek, Bertha Capps, Ann Hejl, Clarence Wilde, Charles Sodek and Bill Kosarek.

Wedding anniversaries will be observed by George and Marie Pavelka, Bill and Martha Wofford, Tom and Margaret Gibson, Edwin and Judy Pechal. We hope all named will have a "Happy Day." Door prize winners were Sisters Mary Vasicek and Annie Chupik.

The mothers were all asked to stand at the meeting. Happy Mother's Day to each mother reading this report.

The youth club honored mothers in the youth club with presents to each from their child or children. Judy Pechal had made a cake for the mothers and one 1or those celebrating birthdays in May. Thanks for making these three cakes!

After adjournment, all other members congratulated the 50 - year recipients. There were several visitors who came after the meeting. The covered dish meal was enjoyed by everyone. Thanks for bringing the food.

Sister Lucy Mihatsch, country store chairwoman, told our members that kolache (6 in a package), canned goods, pickles, preserves, crafts, crocheted items, will be welcomed in her booth. Sister Martha Klusacek asked for kolache, cakes, fruit pies, strudels, cinnamon rolls, etc. for her sweets booth. Coffee will also be sold.

Sister Ann Hejl wanted the green plants, hanging baskets, etc. for her green plants booth. She also is in charge of donations for the auction, if you have items for the auction, you contact her. 1 better tell everyone this is for the lodge's picnic on Sunday, June 7 at Seaton Star Hall.

63 Sweet Home Reschedules 1" leeting

Due to a conflict in hooking at the Firemen's Hall, Lodge No. 63 will hold its yearly supper and social honoring our 50 - year members in May. Pie date has been set for May 17 beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Firemen's Hall in Sweet Home. A short meeting will be held, followed by the presentation of pins to the 50 - year members by a Supreme Lodge member.

Door prizes will be drawn and someone with a birthday in April, May or June will win a birthday cake baked

by Mildred Bolech.

Gaines will be played after the meeting with liquid refreshments furnished by the lodge, as usual.

Supper this year will consist of barbecue chicken made by our famous Sweet Home chefs. Members are asked to bring a side dish and/or dessert.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The recent dances were well attended by our members and guests, including the Les Blume Orchestra on April 25 and the John Sullivan dance on May 2nd.

I he Choral Club and Czech Concert Orchestra were well - received at their performance at the annual Fort Bend county Czech lest in Rosenberg on Saturday, May 2nd. i he Blue Room party held on Sunday, May .. 3 was enjoyed by everyone. The music was provided by the Central Texas Sounds and the dinner was catered by Brothel Willie Wehring.

Our annual "Homecoming with Splash" will be held on Sunday, June 7th. A barbecue beef dinner with all the trimmings will be served free to all members from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

I he charge for dinner or guests will be $4.50 and $3 for mini - plates. The Birthday Club Sisters will appreciate pastry donations. Lodge 130 Dallas Met The April meeting was called to order by President Ken Vrla. All members stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Then the last month's minutes were read by Secretary Martha Vrla.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to our newest member, David Hlavenka. We are happy to have you in our lodge. David is also the President of KJT Lodge No. 111.

The Texas Czech Beseda Dancers of Lodge No. 130 participated in the opening of the Dallas World Salute activities with a performance at the Dallas Market Center open house in conjunction with the Dallas Council On World Affairs and the Dallas Committee For Foreign Visitors on April 5, 1987. The festivities included performances by several ethnic groups and bands and plenty of food and drinks.

The Texas Czech Beseda Dancers of Lodge 130 also performed Saturday, April 25th, during the Dallas International Bazaar at City Hall. This is an annual event in which the dancers participate each year.

The festivities were kicked off with a Parade of Nations at 11:45 on Friday, April 24th. Representing Czechoslovakia in the parade was a former member of the Texas Czech Beseda Dancers, Ed Oates, who is visiting from Florida. Thank you, Ed, for carrying our banner and flag. Lodge 156 Baytown Recognizes Recipients Our Baytown Lodge No. 156 met at 7 p.m. at Wyatt's Cafeteria with fourteen people present. Cleo Liebham, our president, called the meeting to order.

Lodge No. 179 met for their regular meeting on April 9, 1987 at 8 p.m. at the Warrenton Guest Room.

Our president called the meeting to order by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

The secretary read the minutes from our previous meeting, followed by the financial secretary's report which led to the treasurer's report. All reports were approved as read.

There was no old business and no new business brought forward.

The Food Committee announced that for our next meeting, which will be May 14 at '8 p.m., we will have fried fish. and members are asked to bring covered dishes.

The meeting was adjourned followed by a fried chicken meal and refreshments. The chicken was fried by Elgene Eckermann, Ricky Weyand and Mike Noak.

Dear Members and Friends: It was very nice to see all the good rain, as April was a very dry month.

Elie gardens should do good now.

Seems as it hasn't been a good year for gardens so tar.

The meeting of Lodge 180 was called to order by President Louis Grochoske at 7:30 p.m. on April 21st.

All youth club leaders should keep in mind June .18 for the District Ill AD to be held at Lodge 180 in Burleson.

It was nice to see Brad Janek's (son 01 Jerry and Karen Janek of Joshua), picture in the Vestnik and to know that he has chosen to play basketball at Midwestern State University in Vsichita Falls, instead of working on the farm at West, which his parents are so proud of. Good luck, Brad and I know that everyone will be proud of you.

May I weekend is always a fun time and a good time for the Mayfest; it seems as there was so much going on. lhe Sons of Hermann Lodge No. 33 had a Mayfest and there were several drawings. 1 he first prize was a freezer and it went to Cathy Simmank, and second prize (keeping it in the family) went to her mother, Sister Frances Si in m an k .

Sorry to report that Jonathan HammonS spent some time in the hospital; hope he is feeling much better; also Ldd Simmank hasn't been feeling too well. Our brother - in - law, urly Roberts, fell and cracked and chipped a bone in his shoulder, so he is in a lot of pain. We wish these and all others who are sick a speedy recovery.

Lodge 180 has voted to go to direct billing, so it should take effect in a month or two.

I hear that two - month - old David Allen Russell is growing like a weed.

David is the son of Joe and Becky Russell and grandson of B.J. and Joyce Russell.

We were glad to see and talk . to Dennis Barabas alter his return from a lengthy stay in South Korea. Dennis had a lot of stories to tell, but then sorry to hear that Dennis was transferred to San Antonio. We were hoping to see him at the lodge.

It is nice to see some of the old familiar faces back at the dances, such as Robert and Doris Smajstrla and their .children and all the other families. We need more members and families at the dances. The young folks are now being allowed in. The lodge voted to increase the price of the dance tickets from $6 to $7 per person. May 16, the Ramblin' Rhythm will be playing, and New South will play on May 23, dancing from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m, so come and join the good times.

Sister Mydell Grochoske attended the Officers' Orientation meeting on May 2 in Belton. Mydell said the meeting was very informative and was sorry that Louis Grochoske, Joe Hurtik and Frances Simmank, the other officers, were unable to attend.

Mydell also gave a report-on the District III spring meeting at Lodge 35 in Elk, Texas. The crowd was small but the meeting was very important.

The District 111 fall meeting will be held at Lodge 154, Fort Worth.

The trustees' meeting date has been changed from the first Tuesday to the

first Wednesday of each month, so please keep this date in mind.

Our next Lodge 180 meeting wilt be on May 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Lodge 186 Caldwell Hosted A Charitable Project A dance was held on a Sunday afternoon for the Brenham State School residents at Lodge No. 186 in Caldwell. he "Mustangs" provided the music and their time to come out and entertain everyone.

Mr. and Mrs. Ray Muzny and Mr. and Mrs. Bennie Supak provided the meal for the residents and our guests.

Several members of our lodge and several town people came out to help make the day enjoyable for our party.

The youth of our lodge also played a big part in making this a 'very successful day for all of us.

Fellow Lodge Members -- If you ever get the opportunity to attend a function such as this, do yourself a big favor and go because it will do your heart a world of good!

Czech Class At Alief Alief Evening School under auspices of AISD (Alief Independent School District) is, again, offering a Conversational Czech course at Hastings High School. The location of this school is between Bellaire Blvd. on the south and Alief - Clodine on the north on the southwest side of the intersection of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the community of Alief.

The first lesson of this 9 - week summer course, designed to develop basic skill in the Czech language wherever it is spoken, will be on June 4th and, henceforth, once a week on 1 hursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuition, set by the school, will be $43.00 and the instructor will be John J. NEEDVILLE, TEXAS Ludvig Dobesh and Lynos Honeycutt are the new residents to join the group at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in April. Staff members are Carol Kohn (NA), Michelle Lott (NA) and Vivian Jedlicka (Dietary).

Welcome back from Polly Ryan Hospital in Richmond is Alrnida Ullrich and, from the VA Hospital in Houston, is Roy Lee Schroeder.

We regret the death of our faithful, longtime employee, Dietary Supervisor Margie Hall. She will be greatly missed by our staff and residents.

Mary Trevino, LVN, spent the weekend in San Antonio, Texas for the Fiesta week. She reported a great time.

Mary Bankston was the winner of the afghan given away Friday, April 17th.

I he residents enjoyed the treats made and donated by the National Honor Society girls. A special thank you to them.

Elie senior citizen social held at the Methodist Church was attended and enjoyed by Helen Valcik, Thelma Hiller and Annie Stavinoha.

Thursday morning, April 9th, residents Gladys Hix, Frank Carnes, Hilda Cole, Raymond Kuzell, Roy Lee Schroeder, Helen Valcik and Annabelle Shoppe and S.A.D. Martha Marx went riding to Rosenberg and saw some yards full of bluebonnets and enjoyed the ice cream cones.

The KCs came to play Bingo Tuesday afternoon, April 14th and 28th, with the residents. The residents enjoyed the Bingo and visiting with hose present.

Wednesday, April 15th, Elsie Lee Gilfond entertained her father, Ludvig Dobesh, with a birthday party. A few relatives and all the residents attended.

On Holy Thursday, April 16th, the residents had an Easter egg hunt.

Gladys Hix won the prize rabbit.

Everyone had a great time.

The residents reported having a very nice Easter.

Thursday morning, April 23rd, Paul Legendre and Anthony Foston flew kites for the residents. Everyone enjoyed looking at the kites and remembered when they were young. In the afternoon, Garland Hurtye and Mary Ann Goffinet with the Ford Bend Humane Society brought dogs for therapy for the residents.

"Happy Birthday" for the month of April are residents Harmon Matula and Ludvig Dobesh and staff members Mary Ann Foston, Anita Taylor, Lizzie Lightfoot, Donna Holik and Dorothy Lipinski.

The birthday party which was held Friday, April 24th, included Louis Vacek entertaining with the accordion and piano and singing "Happy Birthday." The "A" Flower and Gift Shop provided the corsages and boutonnieres. I he Methodist ladies provided cakes. Lydia Seiler from the Methodist church and volunteers Melva Hastings, Lydia Hortmon, Edith Schulz and Bertha Ross helped serve cake, ice cream, coffee and punch to all. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

Thursday evening, April 30th, Larry Ognoski, Fred Gerke and George Lolley provided music and singing for the residents. Everyone had a great time.

Thanks to all denominations of churches in the area that gave services and communion and to the volunteers who perform services in the home to the residents for the month of April.

A Nursing Home Visit

May 10 - 16 has been declared "National Nursing Home Week" and is a good reminder that we reach out to our elderly who happen no longer to be living in our houses and neighborhoods, but who are still very much with us.

I here is nothin g more meaningful to the residents than visitors, conversation and the human touch.

I hose are simple things we can all give, but there is a lot to be gained.

The theme for Nursing Home Week this year is "Discover Life's 1Treasures k isit a nursinil, home resident." '1 hey were the farmers, housewives, mothers, businessmen, teachers, clergy and soldiers of another time. Many of these Texans grew up in this community and helped make the changes we take for granted. They are a part of the richness of our community today. We can broaden our own perspectives by visiting with them about their adventures of life.

Starting Sunday, May 10 was Mother's Day; Monday, May 11 was releasing balloons; and Tuesday, May 12 w as good beginning day care (which already is in the past). The other days' activities include: Wednesday, May 13 -- Recognition of Volunteers "The Thursday, May 14 Expressions" Friday, May 15 -- Open House, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

If you know someone in a nursing home, this is a good time to renew a friendship. If you do not know someone in a nursing home, then it is a good time to make a new friend.

MERIT POINT SCHOLARSHIP The teen from each district with the total most points over the last three years will be eligible to compete for the merit point scholarship. Each top teen will be notified by the SYD to submit a 1,000 word essay. The topic of the essay is "How Fraternalism Can....'

The winner will be selected by a panel of judges usin g the following criteria: Neatness 15 Content 50 Mechanics 35 (Grammar, spelling, sentence structure) (Approved Supreme Lodge Meeting January 1987) The scholarship winner must request and use the scholarship within 2 years of their high school graduation.

ROYALTY The State King and Queen will be requested to make (4) public appearances during their reign. Two of these will be within the SPJST organization and one will be at Texas Fraternal Congress and one will be outside the SPJST organization. State Royalty will be reimbursed for gas mileage and other expenses as approved by the Head of the Youth Department. (Approved in Supreme Lodge Meeting October 1985) I've included the craft competition guidelines to help you prepare for YAD. Be sure to contact your youth leader or DYC if you have any questions concerning YAD or camp.

We had our youth club election.

Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother HENRY JOSEPH MOCEK, who died suddenly Tuesday, March 31, 1987, in the Burleson County Hospital.

Brother Mocek was born October 17, 1.909 at Seymour, Texas in Baylor County, to the late Anton and Christine Parma Mocek. He was a resident of Burleson County, living in the Chriesman community since 1973, where he was a rancher and farmer. He was retired employee of the City of Houston retiring in 1963.

He was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Caldwell, the Knights of Columbus, and the KJT of Caldwell.

Brother Mocek was married to Mildred Brassel November 28, 1935.

Funeral Mass was held April 2, in St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Emilian Foltyn and Msgr. B.J. Zientek, of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dime Box, officiating. A Christian Wake service was held April in Phillips - Luckey Chapel led by Nlsgr. Emilian Foltyn. Interment was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery:.

Survivors include his widow , Mrs. Mildred Mocek of caldwell; one daughter, Patricia Sheppard of Caldwell; three grandchildren; five great - grandchildren; brother, Jerry Mocek of Seymour, Texas; and two sisters, Marjoria Brom of Seymour and Lillie Orsak of San Antonio.

Sister Sebesta was born May 2, 1927 in Midway, Texas, to the late Albert Sidney Key and Edith Annie Stornes Key. She was a resident of Caldwell for 45 years. She was a homemaker and had worked for Boedeker Super Market for 20 years.

She was a member of the Caldwell Brethren Church.

Sister Sebesta was married to Frank Sebesta on November 16, 1946. He preceded her in death April 3, 1975.

She is also preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Sebesta, a granddaughter and by a sister.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 2, in the Caldwell Brethren Church with the Rev. Daniel J. Marek officiating. Interment was in

the New Tabor Cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, James and Gary Sebesta, both of Caldwell; six daughters, Linda Strange of Crockett, Sandra Monroe of Bryan, Rene Zwernemann of Carmine, Barbara Lewis of Somerville, Virginia Sebesta of Bryan and Carolyn Hobbs of Caldwell; 15 grandchildren; 9 step grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two brothers, Leon Key of Seagoville and Everett Key of Midway; two sisters, Myrtle Tabor of Caldwell and Ruth Green of Brenham.

SHIMEK, JR., who passed away of a heart attack at his residence in Schulenburg on Wednesday, April 22, 1987 at the age of 68 years.

Christian Burial services were held at 10 a.m. April 25 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with Fr. Richard Filice officiating. Interment followed at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in Schulenburg with military graveside services. The U.S. Flag was presented to Brother Shimek's wife, Edna Shimek.

Pallbearers were Emil Janek, Edwin E. Stavinoha, Lee J. Shimek, Terry Craig Selcik, Eldon Knape Jr., and Edwin (Bubba) Sefcik. Honorary pallbearers included Darren Shimek, Ottmar Schimek, Wilbur Stavinoha, John Yarling, A.J. Kalich and Jason Stavinoha.

A Veteran's Memorial service was held at Schwenke - Baumgarten Funeral Chapel on April 24 at 7 p.m.

Following that, also on April 24 at the Chapel at 8 p.m., a Rosary was led by Fr. itilice.

Brother Shimek was born 28 February 1919 in Schulenburg to John and Annie (Sternadel) Shimek. He attended school in Schulenburg and married Edna Marie Stavinoha at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Praha, texas on October 27, 1947. He lived in Schuienburg all his life except for four years during which he served his Country as Tech - 4 Sergeant in North Africa; Sicily, Italy; Salerno to Cassino and Cassino to the Alps with the 91st Cavalry RCN Alert Squadron, and was attached with the Fifth U.S. Army and 10th Mountain Division.

For his bravery, he was awarded decorations and citations of the American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the LAME Campaign Medal with 6 Bronze Stars.

During his civilian life, he became a professional truck operator for Herder Truck Lines, Inc. of Weimar, Texas for 34 years. He was recognized and honored for his long years and loyal service with the firm in 1984. In addition to this recognition, he was also ,selected and pictured in the National Truck Transportation Magazine for his safe and courteous driving.

Brother Shimek was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, VFW Post 5623, American Legon Post 143, and SPJST Lodge No. 88 in Houston.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father.

They had no children. Survivors include his wife, Edna Shimek; two sisters, Mrs. Victor (Roslyn) Vacek of Schulenburg and Mrs. Eldon (Delores) Knape of Swiss Alp; and a brother, Eugene Shimek of San Antonio.

Brother Schuetz was born December 28, 1917 near Gerald and lived in the Gerald - West areas all of his life. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, the SPJST Lodge No. 6 of Cottonwood, and the RVOS No. 46.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Veterans of I •oreign Wars Post 4819. He was married to Willie Mae Barton on October 13, 1944, in Waco.

Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae Schuetz; two daughters, Mrs. Tommy (Rut hie) Sadler of l ort Worth and Mrs. Richard (Dorothy) Hykel of Troy; a brother, Theodore Schuetz of Waco; and two grandsons, and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were James Schuetz, Alfred Schuetz, Dick Schuetz, Ernest Banik, Vernon Dulock and Ronnie Syman k Honorary pallbearers were the officers oISPJST Lodge No. 6, SPJST Lodge 6 Youth Club, and members of the VFW Post 4819.

Sister Mat us born 29 March 1893, in Hill County, Texas to Frank and Rosie Marek, was married to Frank M. Matus, in West, November 9, 1915. He preceded her in death on October 28, 1979.

She was a housewife and farmed with her husband. She was a member of the West Brethren Church and The Christian Sisters, and was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 54 in West.

Survivors include two sons, Frank W. Matus of West and Louis J. Matus of Elm Mott; 10 grandchildren; 26 great - grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Jerry F. Matus, David Lee Matus, Larry Matus, Marvin Matus, Robert Joe Kasik, Edward Gene Kasik, Harry Lee Kasik and Ronnie Louis Kasik.

Sheryl is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Macha of Needville; and her grandparents include Mrs. Selma Bednarek and the late Theodore Bednarek of Needville and Mr. and Mrs. Anton Macha (deceased) of Wallis, Texas.

Architecture Student Accepted Into National Honor Society Mark A. Mikeska was recently accepted for Membership in TAU Sigma Delta, a National Honor society for Architecture students. He received the honor at a formal banquet recently held at the College Station Hilton in College Station, Texas.

TAU Sig ma Delta makes its selection from the top 20 percent of architecture students in the nation.

Mikeska is a junior at Texas A & M University and is studying Environmental design and Architecture. He is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 24 and is the son of Supreme Lodge Secretary/Treasurer and Mrs. Leonard D. Mikeska.

Macha Achieves Recognition In USAA Society The United States Achievement Academy announced today that Sheryl Danette Macha has been named a United States Award winner in Science and Foreign Language.

These awards are prestigious honors very few students can ever hope to attain. In fact, the Academy recognizes less than 10 percent of all American high school students.

Sheryl, who attends Needville High School was nominated for this National Award by Mrs. Paula Robinson, Chemistry teacher, and by Mrs. Judy Reyes, Spanish teacher, at the school.

Mr. Jerry Bartos was sworn in today as a member of the Dallas City Council. Bartos was elected by 87 percent of the vote in his District 3 receiving the largest vote of any district of the city.

A Dallas businessman, Bartos is president of Bartos, Inc., a member of the United States Chamber of Commerce Council on Small Business, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, and was, recently, president of . 1 he Greater Dallas Planning Council.

Bartos served as a member of the Dallas School Board 1979 - 1981 and was cited in the Congressional Record for distinguished service in correcting public business practices.

Ona a jeji rodina byli z Cech a tak jsem je pozvala aby nas navgtivili a teprve si v ge povime.
