SPJST Third State Annual Straight Domino Tournament Members from across the state gathered at SPJST Lodge No. 66, Waco to participate at the third Annual SPJST Straight Domino I ournament.

Participants and guests took part in a day full of friendly competition, socializing and a delicious meal provided by the membership of-Lodge 66.

Tuesday, April 7th your editor attended the second 1987 quarterly meeting of our Supreme Lodge and listened to the proceedings of the SL Body. There was quite an amount of business transacted and not much time "wasted" in unnecessary discussions.

While present, one of the items discussed was the life insurance table which goes under the abbreviated name CSO and stands for "Commissioners Standard Ordinary " Table for life insurance companies to do business by and, of course, our SPJST Society also operates under that term. The 1980 CSO table (the latest one thus far) is the table our Society is gradually converting all classes of insurance to and will place all of our classes of insurance in more competitive range of prices and costs of insurance for our members. We must all remember that life expectancy of all people, because of advanced medical knowledge, better nutrition, physical practices, etc., is longer, thereby reducing the cost of insurance for individuals in all classes of life insurance. The editorial in last week's issue touched on certain phases of our plans of insurance; it is hoped that many of our members read it and took time to think about the realities of what concerns our membership.

Our sales representatives are urged to attend the seminars held for their benefit in various locations of the state, because it is at these seminars that the up - to - date information for our sales representatives is available so try to keep abreast of the changes going on in the life insurance field. *** Easter season is right upon us and then the days of more heated longer hours are facing us. Keep in mind that the incidents of skin cancer, due to the sun is increasing every year -- so dress accordingly.

Have an enjoyable Easter with your loved ones! *** Some people with moderately high blood pressure may be able temporarily to do without medication and its unwanted side effects if they can lose weight and reduce their intake of sodium and alcohol, according to reports in the "Journal of the American Medical Association." In one study, 189 patients were divided into three sections. Group 1 stopped taking medication and reduced weight as well as salt and alcohol consumption. Group 11 stopped medication with no nutritional program. Group III continued medication with no nutritional program. After four years, 39 percent in Group I kept their blood pressure at normal levels without medication, compared with only 5 percent in Group 11. A second study indicates that most patients must eventually return to medication to keep their blood pressure down. Taken together, the two studies suggest that some patients, if carefully monitored, can enjoy the physical and psychological benefits of living without medication at least intermittently. ***

Those popular "war" games -- in which two teams of civilians don combat gear and fight mock battles -are creating real life casualties.

Typically, participants shoot at each other with supposedly harmless, paint - impregnated pellets. Although safety goggles are worn, they do not always work. Two out - of - state doctors writing in "Archives of Ophthalmology" describe the experience of a young man who was injured while playing the game "Survival." He was wearing goggles, but a paint pellet from an opponent's gun hit the goggles at an angle, pushing the goggles into his right eye.

So much for fun -- he was hospitalized. *** If you're planning on going to Philadelphia this summer to help celebrate the bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution, don't delay in making arrangements, travel advisers recommend.

The city where the document was drafted in 1787 is gearing up fora four - month - long birthday party with more than 200 events. The May 22 - 25 kickoff, "All Roads Lead to Philadelphia," will feature a variety of activities such as an American musical extravaganza and a festival re creating life in 1787. The celebration culminates on Constitution Day -September 17, when the document was completed -- with a parade promoted as the nation's biggest ever. A commemoration ceremony will include the President, Chief Justice and Congressional leaders. Afterward will come a gala with a cast of 200 of the country's top entertainers. For details, write: We the People 200, Bourse, Independence Mall East, Philadelphia, Pa. 19106. *** With their own children, dentists appear to practice what they preach -and so, perhaps, should you. A recent survey of members of the American Academy ol Pediatric Dentistry found that 85 percent of their youngsters under age 12 had never had cavities.

By comparison, just 50 percent of all children under 12 are cavity - free. The difference, of course, is the degree of the dentists' in \ olvement. Most said they brushed their children's teeth until age 5 or later. This was done at least twice a day, in most cases -almost always with a fluoride toothpaste. Eighty - seven percent said their children either have had or would have sealants applied to their teeth.

Regular flossing is widely practiced.

Snacking is usually prohibited or restricted to once or twice a day. How soon should a child first visit a dentist?

Before the first birthday. *** Au estimated 87,000 Magnalite professional saucepans have lids that fit too tight and could explode off the pan it pressure builds up, warns the Consumer Product Safety Commission. -1 he result could be burn injuries and property damage. One, two and three-quart saucepans produced between September, 1984, and July, 1985, are being voluntarily recalled by their manufacturer. The aluminum pans, which sold in department stores and gourmet shops for $54 to $80, are dark gray in color, with the name "Magnalite" impressed on the bottom. An owner can test a pan by placing it on a stable surface, putting on the cover and pressing down firmly. If the pan can be lifted by holding just the cover, it's too tight.

Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503 Re: SPJST - 1986 Financial Review Dear Sid: Since the Statutory Financial Statement has been completed and filed for calendar year 1986, 1 have reviewed the operations for the past few years. Please pass these comments on to the other Board Members and Officers.

The past success of the SPJST has provided a solid base of in force business to build upon in the current insurance market. As in the past the experienced leadership of the Supreme Lodge has not opted to rest on its laurels, but to meet the changing times in making available current era products such as high yield Annuities and a Universal Life Certificate. The Universal Life Certificate has helped to provide the highest volume of insurance issued in a single year in the Society's existence. Both of these insurance products furnish tremendous benefits to members.

The general operating expenses increased only slightly with the development and training expenses for the new products. The increase in expenses was more than offset by the increase in investment income. This is an example of the teamwork effect exhibited by the departments of the Supreme Lodge.

Agee the Employment Retirement Pension —SPJSTPlan; recommendations were received and discussed by the committee members. The Finance Committee recommends a 5 percent increase for the qualified recipients of the SPJST Employee Retirement Pension Plan as of December 31, 1985 effective January 1, 1986. Supreme Lodge approved 3 percent.

President Kocian appointed a committee of the following members to meet regarding this topic, namely, Chairman John Mynar, Freddie Kaluza, Jan Vaculik, Beanie Kacir, John Emery, Maxine Sefcik and Anne Emery.

Sister Beanie Kacir gave a report on Lodge 54 activities regarding people involvement and financial involvement for 1986. Totals of 4,535 hours and $5,227.25 were turned in by our members. These amounts could be much larger if more members would participate in this. This is very important because this justifies our federal and state tax exemptions and other areas of special treatment.

President Kocian read a letter from Leonard Mikeska regarding the local lodge officers' orientation session which will be held on May 2nd at Mary Hardin Baylor. All officers and other interested members are encouraged to attend.

Sister Josephine Kocian was the winner of the door prize. The meeting was adjourned and everyone enjoyed ťellowship and refreshments. Thanks to the Kitchen Committee ladies for the nice luncheon that was served.

Our next meeting will be held on May 31st at 2 p.m. It will be a very important meeting and make an effort io attend.

Lodge 88 Houston Dear Brothers and Sisters: It is with deep regret to report the death of Brother Herbert Jarisch, who passed away on March 30th at the age of 78 years. He is survived by his wife, Sister Emma Jarisch; daughter, Marilyn Jaksch; grandchildren, Joseph F. Jaksch and Carl E. Jaksch; great - grandchildren, Jodi and Jacob Jaksch; sisters, Mrs. Del Rose Nussbaum, Mrs. Dotie Pape, Mrs. Elizabeth Pape; brothers, Wilburn Jarisch and Othmar Jarisch; and numerous other relatives. Services were conducted on Wednesday, April 1st at Earthman's Resthaven Chapel in Houston. Brother Jarisch was always willing to extend a helping hand and our deepest sympathy is extended to his family.

Brother Joe F. Jirasek, who is the father of Sister Evelyn Walla, passed away on March 30th at the age of 90 years. Funeral services were held on April 2nd at Earthman's Resthaven Chapel with interment at Earthman's Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Houston. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Brother Jirasek.

The dance held on Friday, April 3rd to the music of the Texas Brew was well attended. The Central Texas Sounds played for the dance on Saturday, April 4th to a large crowd.

Mr. and Mrs. Franklin D. Bravenec celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at our lodge on Sunday, April 5th. This celebration was hosted by their daughters, Linda and Joan, and was attended by family and friends. We wish many more years of happiness to Brother and Sister Bravenec.

Many thanks to the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra for the beautiful music enjoyed by all at that 79th Celebration Day, also thanks to our guest speaker Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas.

187 Ribbon-Cutting Ceremonies Planned Lodge

lhe members of Lodge 187 have been busy mixing and pouring concrete, welding, moving dirt, painting, cutting and hammering, and laying a lot of brick. All of this hard work is being done to help provide a comfortable and private recreational area for all of the members to enjoy.

To date, a 48 - foot by 48 - foot covered barbecue pit pavillion has been built, a pipe fence has been put up and a sport's court has been laid out. A lot of time and energy is still needed to complete the landscaping and to finish construction of the two volleyball courts, four horseshoe pitching courts, and two washer pitching courts.

In order to make sure that all of the members are aware of the improvements that are being made to the lodge, a formal ribbon - cutting ceremony is planned for the barbecue pavillion on Sunday, April 26th.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our softball season will open the week of April 13th; as yet, 1 have not received a copy of the schedule.

Our team entered a tournament in Austin, Texas the weekend of March 28th and 29th. We played 4 games, we won two games and we were to play Sunday morning when the rains came and washed out the balance of the tournament.

Our Annual Softball Team Benefit Dance will be Saturday night, April 18th at Lodge 84, 2625 Floyd Street, Dallas, Texas from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. The Czech Harvesters Orchestra will be playing your favorite polkas, waltzes and some country music for an evening we promise you will enjoy if you attend our dance.

The purpose of our dance is to raise funds for the team, and it gets harder each year, however, we feel that a lot of our members of SPJST of Lodge 84, a lot of our friends from other societies and friends from Dallas, Ennis, Fort Worth and all ex - players will lend us your support. Without all your help and attendance, we couldn't survive.

Ladislav Vycpalek (1882 - 1969) [Continuation from the last Vestnik] Ladislav Vycpalek, as a composer, was remarkably direct and assured. He seldom revised his products and, apart from student exercises, did not destroy or suppress any. His association with composer Viterslav Novak, 12 years his senior, ensured early performances of his musical works; most were published practically right after composition. Although Novak had strong influence on his creativity, it was Vycpalek's studies of Bach and of few other composers with similar musical tendencies which proved more lasting, for his interests were polyphonic rather than harmonic. His orderly disciplined approach and consistent artistic success meant that within 15 years or so of his first composition he had, steadily and organically, found a very personal style that fitted his needs exactly. If it lacked, according to some musical critics,charm and seemed narrow in its emotional range, this was more than compensated for by depth and seriousness of his conceptions, the technical mastery of their execution and his eloquent brand of spiritual luminosity rarely equalled in the music of the 20th century. Some of Vycpalek's works were not published and are now located in the archives. in this group of unpublished songs is, for instance, a chamber orchestra piece Ticha usmiteni (quiet reconciliations) and a musical piece from Scottish Highlands called Divka z Lochroyanu (the maid of Lochroyan). 1912 under the title Vycpalkovy muieke sbory (Vycpalek's male - voice choruses) by Bedfich Vornaeka. The same author put out Ideova stranka dila Ladislava Vycpalka (intellectual aspects of Vycpalek's works); Listy Hudebni matice (The periodical of the Scholastic Council,of Music published it in 1921 - 1922. The same periodical printed in about the same time VycpalkuV sloh (Vycpalek's style) from Vaclav Stepan. This writeup was translated into German and published in Dem Auftakt in 1925. Richard Newmarch wrote about "Some Czechoslovak Choral Works" and "Vcypalek's Canata of the Four Last filings" in English in 1923 and Franti gek Krejei had Dva nabo2enske momenty v moderni eeske hudbe (two religious moments in modern Czech music) published in the above mentioned periodical of the Scholastic Council of Music in 1 olume of 1924 1925. J. Plavec published in 1932 Vokalnost Ladislava Vycpalka (Vycpalek's vocal qualities v Peveckem a Hudebnim Vestniku (in vocal and musical herald); Vaclav Helfert wrote about composer L. Vycpalek v Ceske moderni hudbe (in Czech modern music publication) in Olomouc in 1936 and ye VybranYch studiich (in the selected studies) in an article 0 hudebni tvorivosti (about musical creativity) in Prague in 1970. In the year of 1942 four different musical critics or analysts dedicated their articles to Vycpalek and to his creative artistry. G.N. Bakard2ijev wrote Raz hudby Ladislava Vycpalek (the character of Vycpalek's music) in the publication Na ge doba (our times), H. Dole2i1 had an article titled Ladislav Vycpalek v Peveckem a Hudebnim Vestniku (in vocal and musical herald).

Same title had an article of I. Krejci publikaci Rytmus (in the rhythm publication) and Zdenek Nemec compiled an excellent article titled Nad 2ivotem a dIlem Ladislava Vycpalka (Vycpalek's life and work) in the publication Divadlo a hudba (theatre and music). Marie Svoboda wrote an interesting article titled Ladislav Vycpalek a poeatky hudebniho oddeleni universitni knihovny v Praze (Lad. Vycpalek and the beginning of the music section at Prague's University Library), which appeared in 1956 v Roeence pralske universitni knihovny (in the yearly publication of university's library in Prague). In 1957 Umelecka Beseda (the guild of artists) published the following: Ladislav

Vycpalek: K sedumdesatYm patYm narozeninam Umelecka Beseda svemu starostovi, 1882 -- 23. II. 1957 (the guild of artists to its head on his 75th birthday. This publication included E. Herzog's excellent article Umeni Ladislava Vycpalka (Vycpalek's art). Smolka's VycpalkOv tvfirei vYvoj (Vycpalek's creative evolution) published in 1959 in Prague lists all musical compositions and writings of this artist, including also extensive bibliography. A publication Tvarce nadeasovY (a creator above his times) written about Vycpalek by Karel Janeeek was published in Tempo in 1947; it was later reproduced with a subtitle Uvahy, eseje, studie a poznamky (reflexions, essays, studies and notes). Vycpalek's obituary "Ode gel rreirodni umelec Ladislav Vycpalek" national artist Lad. Vycpalek passed away) was ably delivered by V. Holzknecht in 1969 and a publication titled Narodni umelec Lad. Vycpalek (national artist L. Vycpalek) from Marie Svobodova and H. Krupka was published v Praze (in Prague) in 1973.

Ladislav Vycpalek was an outstanding Czech musical composer in the long line of distinguished artists of this kind. Let us hope that this eulogical article written to commemorate his 105th birthday anniversary will enhance the overall ethnic awareness in the membership of our SPJST and among the all other Czech - Americans in the Lone Star State.

Post Scriptum.

Saturday, March 28th the Choral Group and the SPJST Orchestra from Lodge 88 Pokrok in Houston, including a couple of other members of this lodge, traveled on 2 chartered buses to perform at the Czech Heritage Festival on that day in Corpus Christi, Texas. (Some members of the two above - mentioned entertaining groups, dedicated to our ethnic cause, traveled to the festival by their own cars.) It was a pleasant trip and I believe that all of us had a grand time.

Czech Educational Foundation Of Texas The

UNIVERSITY ENDOWMENT FOR CZECH STUDIES <le officers and directors of The Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEI-T) met in Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon, March 28, 1987, to discuss and evaluate the progress of the fund drive to endow a university chair for Czech studies. The endowment of $500,000.00 will guarantee the teaching and study of the Czech language and culture to all future generations at either the University of Texas or Texas A&M University.

An amount of nearly $200,000.00 has been raised thus far from a small group of interested donors. The goal is to raise the additional amount needed from the large population of Texans of Czech ancestry inhabiting the state.

The relatively large population of Czechs in Texas began with the arrival of the first group of immigrants via New Orleans in February, 1852.

From The Youth Leader Lodge 160, San Angleo Youth Club Our Youth Club is staying busy for the month of April. On April 12th we had a booth at the District IV meeting held at Wall. We sold "worm memo holders" which we had made at our March meeting. We also sold baked and canned items which the members brought. Our Youth Club then presen ted a program about Easter at this meeting.

Dear Readers, Our monthly meeting was called to order on Wednesday, April 1, 1987 by President Angie Sebesta and Pledge of Allegiance was led by Rebekah See. Roll call, treasurer's report and minutes were read.

Old business was that the St. Patrick's Day party in New Tabor was reported a lot of fun. The Lions Club chili/bingo supper was a real big hit.

Thanks ,o everyone who came and supported our Lions Club.

New business is the new rules for the Rule Book, make sure everyone reads them; also the chicken/dumpling sandwich supper and bingo which was set for April Ilth from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Activities for this month will be the Parent Banquet, the Easter egg hunt at the churches. And, again, members pay your dues! We also need contestants for king, queen, duke and duchess; YAD is coming up in August.

We need volunteers for the scrapbook.

Special thanks go to John See 111, Becky and Randy See, Melissa and Ashley Victorick, Kristine and Kevin Junek and Matt Jakubik for putting up the posters for our chili supper.

Thanks also to Becky and Randy See, Kathy and Chad Kovar for doing their method demonstration. Becky and Randy did theirs on lambs and Chad did his on gun safety and Katy did hers on food. They were very good!

Expression Of Sympathy Expression Of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge No. 142, Houston, Texas, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed brother ADOLPH PAVLICEK, of Houston, a native of Moravia, Lavaca County, Texas, who died Sunday, March 8, 1987 at his home in Houston, at the age of 62 years, 10 months and 15 days.

Brother Pavlicek, one of five children, was born April 23, 1924 to Frank and Cecilia (Holec) Pavlicek.

He was reared on the family farm, attended the area school and was married to Anita Kohloeffel. The couple made their home in Houston for many years.

He was a retired welder and was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Houston. He was a veteran of World War 11 and was a member of American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the SPJST Lodge No 142.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m.

Wednesday, March 11 at Ascension Catholic Church in the Moravia community with the Rev. Brian Crookes officiating. Burial followed in the Moravia Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Kubena Funeral Home of Hallettsville.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Tuesday at the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Anita Pavlicek of Houston; three daughters, Ann Klaus and Annie Pavlicek, both of Houston and Mrs. Alice Snook of lola; two sons, Adolph Pavlicek, Jr. of Houston and Frank Pavlicek of Hallettsville; two sisters, Mrs. Elo (Cecilia) Anders of Witting and Mrs. Fred (Mary) Anders of Moulton; a brother, Anton Pavlicek of Schulenburg; one grandchild; nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Pavlicek, 14 November 1975, a traffic accident victim.

The Czech Heritage State Society of Texas held its seminar at Fayetteville, Texas. Hosting the event was the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce.

Registration began at 9 a.m. The seminar started at 10 a.m. and was held until 4 p.m. A brief history of the seminar opening was conducted by CHS State President Marjorie Matula and CC President Alvin Minarcik.

Mrs. Marjorie Matula presided at the meeting throughout the day.

Czech Team Participates At The Modern Pentathlon EModerni Petibojati] The Czech team from Czechoslovakia which participated at the Modern Pentathlon held at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, was very competitive. This competition was held as a preparation for the 1988 World Olympics which will be held in Korea. This was the third time that the Czech team came to San Antonio, the first time being in 1977, and then in 1982. Various teams from many nations participated -- Romania, Russia, Italy, Spain and many others.

Once again, I was called upon to be the interpreter for the Czech team. It never is an easy task, for reasons that the language spoken at such events is not heard too often or, should 1 say, the average Czech spoken. It always is very interesting, the various events that I attended, to see the many countries competing.

My wife, Marie, and I hosted the team throughout the week. We had dinner together and took them shopping throughout the city a number of times. Their money was limited so we had to look for bargains.

The only free time they had was after 6 p.m. and they had to be in bed by 10 p.m.

The Modern Pentathlon has not received much attention in the United States, mainly because it is so different from other American sports, but the Americans are very competitive.

The pentathlon, which began in the 1912 Olympic Games, is a test of military skills. Athletes must be skilled in riding, fencing, swimming, running and shooting. We enjoyed all the events.

They had a new trainer with them this time; his name is Pavel Kupka. I still keep in touch with the trainer they had in 1977 named Karl Bartu. We wish them well.
