It has come, to your editor's attention that some of our sales representatives and members have certain misgivings about the new minimum of life insurance that will be offered by SPJST, however, remember that any member or prospective member can always purchase an Annuity insurance in very small amounts, and thereby become members of our SPJST Society.

Everyone is urged to keep in mind that the "old days" of a $1,000 life insurance certificate to be paid to the surviving family and be of much benefit are gone. The average funeral nowadays will incur a cost of between $4,500 and $5,000. We must keep this in mind if we are purchasing or selling insurance for that purpose! *** Last week, watching the Motion Picture "Oscar" Awards, it was interesting to note that one of the five foreign films nominated for an "Oscar" was a Czech film titled "My Sweet Little Village." It did not receive first place, however, to be nominated thus is, of course, no small honor.

Brother John J. Karas of Houston, one, of our Vestnik correspondents, has seen it and his letter about it appears in this issue.

Yours truly was also impressed by a flashing moment during the presentations when the camera "flashed" a picture of Jane Fonda (a previous winner of Oscars and one of the five actresses nominated for the 'best - actress' award) when the award was awarded to a deaf actress. Ms. Fonda's eyes lit up and her lips moved in that instant and next morning the news revealed that she stated: "Isn't that wonderful!" That shows a true heart of a great person! *** Our members and readers in Fayette County, especially, the Schulenburg area, etc., are reminded that the Czech - language play "Kos to zaridi" will be presented at the Cozy Theater in Schulenburg this Sunday afternoon, April 12th. (Refer to the advertisement on page 14). Your editor had the privilege and good fortune of directing this play in the 1960s when it was presented at that time. You will not regret seeing the play---rest assured! *** This is the time of year that college accept and reject applications for admission. Statistically your chances are good: Only 17 percent of nearly 3 million applicants each year are turned down by their first choice among colleges. But the better a school's reputation, the steeper the odds against you. If you are turned down, don't despair. There are steps you can take to launch your college years successfully.

First, if you really want to get into a particular school, appeal the rejection.

Write or call the admission's office to make sure that all of the application forms, recommendation letters, test scores and so on were received and evaluated. Try to persuade officials that you were underestimated. Schools will reverse decisions if errors have been made, even if officials won't

change their minds, ask why you were turned down. Admissions' officers will usually tell you. Their explanations may help you decide the kind of school where you might fit in better. If you are determined to attend a particular institution, its admissions' officers can tell you what you must do--what other schools to attend, what courses to take, how high your grades must be--to transfer there later. And when you do seek to transfer, your high school grades will no longer be considered.

That can be a real advantage.

It's not too late to apply to other schools, either. Many of the nation's 3,000 universities and colleges--even private ones, still have openings.

Although the most prestigious state universities in your home state'may be booked up, don't neglect smaller state colleges: Some will accept applications as late as August, also don't be put off by the expense of private schools; many still offer some forms of iinancial assistance.

Some students, unable to get into the university of their dreams, are tempted to take a year off from school to improve their credentials. It's true that volunteer activity, travel or interesting work experience can impress admissions' officials. But you run the risk of letting your academic skills become rusty and, even worse, losing interest in higher education altogether. While you delay, the cost of college education is rising about 7 percent per year. If you do decide to take time off, enroll in at least one course just to keep your hand in. *** When a doctor advises you to have an operation, it pays to get a second opinion 1 rom another doctor. Even simple medical procedures can carry risks. Many kinds of operations--from plastic surgery to heart bypasses--are performed on a non - emergency basis, which means they can often be scheduled at the patient's convenience, so take the time to make sure you understand the chances of success and tailure, how costly the procedure is and how long recovery will take. Ask whether your condition can be controlled by non - surgical means, such as medication or diet. Most insurers, including medicare, will cover a second--or even a third-opinion, it necessary. Your doctor can suggest another physician; most doctors encourage patients to seek second opinions. Or call the referral service of the local medical society, a major hospital or medical school. *** Before phoning a company long distance, it might be worthwhile to see if the firm has an 800 number that you can dial toll - free. There are approximately 450,000 such listings.

Retirees, hobbyists, moonlighters, homemakers and the disabled--these are types of people who tend to be attracted to running a business from their homes. Joe Bobalik [left] and Steve West of Lodge 74 were the chief barbecue chairmen at the recent District H meeting.

On March 22nd, District II held their spring meeting at Lodge No. 74, Lovelady. A crowd of 250 were present to enjoy the day's meeting and activities.

The enthusiasm and spirit of fraternalism was very evident and the day's events will be remembered for years to come.

It had been noted that this was one of the biggest district spring meetings ever held by any district and can be attributed to the lodges that helped to coordinate the transportation and made certain that the buses arrived on time.

Also, my thanks to all the lodges of District II that gave freely of their time and energy in making this the successful event that it was.

We appreciated having Supreme Lodge Secretary/Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and his wife, Dorothy, Editor Rudy Sefcik and his wife, Maxine, for sharing this day with us.

On behalf of the District II officers, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the officers and members of Lodge 74, Lovelady, for the delicious meal that was served, the beautiful facility that was provided and, most important of all, the hospitality that was shown to all who were present.

We feel that we can see the successful results of any endeavor when all members work together.

4 To Meet April 12th

Lodge

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, March 8, 1987 at the Grant Building at Hallettsville. President Annie Vahalik called the meeting to order and led our members in the pledge to the U.S. flag assisted by Nicholas Vahalik.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the last meeting which were approved.

Correspondence was read concerning the Lodge Officers' Orientation on Saturday, May 2 on the university campus of Mary Hardin - Baylor in Belton from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Also on the selection of the Fraternalist of the Year and a letter from District VI vice president inviting our lodge to attend the District VI meeting in Victoria.

Youth Leader Gaynell Chudej reported that an Easter egg hunt might be held at the next meeting.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka gave their reports. The meeting adjourned.

Refreshments and lunch were served. Door prize winner was Annie Vahalik.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, April 12 at the Grant Building beginning at 2 p.m. Refreshments and lunch to be served as usual.

29 Schedules May Fest

Lodge

SPJST Lodge No. 29 in Taylor held their monthly meeting on Sunday, March 8 at 4 p.m. with President Melvin Steger presiding at the meeting.

Our members stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance; we remained standing for our deceased Sister Dorothy Kurecka.

We had one applicant for membership in Lodge 29, namely Adrian Ronnie -Simcik.

Our traditional May Fete, which is held on the first Sunday in May, will be called "May Fest." We will have a chicken dinner, country store, cake walk and heritage display. There will be a dance at our lodge that afternoon, so people who buy a meal ticket will be able to go to the dance FREE. A motion was made to donate $25 to the Thrall School paper.

President Steger announced that on April 11, the Czech Club will have their annual meeting. Our next lodge meeting will be Sunday, April 12th.

63 Changes Meeting Date

The April meeting of Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home will be held on April 12, 1987, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Firemen's Hall in Sweet Home. This will be a very short meeting followed by a lodge Domino Tournament.

Members and guests will be eligible to play. Snacks may be brought if desired.

Note that this is a change from our regular monthly meeting date of the third Sunday in the month. This is due to Easter falling on the regular date.

A change has also been necessary for our annual supper. Due to hall conflicts the supper will be held at our May 17th meeting. More details will follow later.

Mark these date changes on your calendar and make plans to attend both of these meetings. Come out and play dominoes on April 12th and see which team is the best.

Frances Olexa Mrs. Frances Olexa (better known as Frances to all of her friends at Lodge 88) has just completed the AARP Mature Driving Course conducted at Lodge No. 88. This course is designed to increase elder drivers' concern for the normal age - related physical changes of vision, hearing and reaction time because they affect driving as related to today's complex traffic problems.

Frances' completion of this course isn't so unusual in itself except for the fact that Frances is 87 years old and always looking to the future.

What a wonderful outlook on life.

Here's hoping that we all will be so fortunate to have the same outlook when we reach that wonderful age.

Mrs. Renee Hall, the AARP instructor, says that Mrs. Olexa is the eldest person to have taken the course and what a remarkable and interesting student.

As Frances says,"Why not grow old gracefully since it doesn't cost anymore to do so and is so much more fun anyway."

Frances was 10 years old 'when she came to America with her parents from Vienna, Austria and settled in the Rosenberg, Texas, area. Not until she was 18 years old was she able to join the SPJST lodge in Rosenberg, because, unlike now when an infant may join the society,in those days the earliest age was 18 years.

She later transferred membership to Lodge No. 88 and has worked continually for the benefit of the lodge.

Frances is a charter member of the Birthday Club and was instrumental, with other members, in starting this club in 1946. She is a past president of the Birthday Club, having held that office for 4 terms and is still a Birthday Club sister.

During her 70 years as a member of SPJST, Frances has held every job in the lodge, except president. She had declined the nomination many times.

When asked why she declined, she said (with that little sparkle in her eye), "Why should I be president when I'm having so much fun not being president," laughing all the while.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The Vrazel dance held on March 21st was attended by a large crowd who enjoyed dancing to the polka and waltz music. The Jan Garber dance held on March 28th was also well attended with the guests wearing their formal attire.

Brother L.A. Kucera passed away on March 16, 1987. He was the former President and Chairman of the Board of Liberty Savings Association.

Funeral services were held on March 18th at St. Luke's United Methodist Church with interment at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. Sister Josephine Lukasik of Conroe passed away on March 14th and services were conducted on March 16th. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the families of Brother Kucera and Sister Lukasik.

Sister Eloise Flores is home from the hospital. She and her husband have been missed at our Saturday night dances. We wish Sister Flores a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing both of them soon.

The Lodge No. 88 Choral Club was well - received at their performance at the Houston International Festival on March 21st. The Choral Club and Czech Concert Orchestra traveled to Corpus Christi on March 28th to perform at the Czech Heritage Festival which was sponsored by the Czech Heritage Society of South Texas in an effort to preserve and honor our customs, language and heritage. These groups wish to express their gratitude to Lodge No. 142 for the use of their hall for rehearsal on March 24th.

Don't forget that the Dramatic Club will present the Czech play entitled "Kos to zaridi" (Kos Will Fix It) on Sunday, April 12th at 2 p.m. at the Cozy Theatre in Schulenburg.

All members are urged to attend the Lodge No. 88 monthly meeting to be held on Monday, April 13th at 7:30 p.m.

Lodge 133 March Meeting & Celebration The March meeting of SPJST Lodge No. 133 San Antonio was held on March 15 at St. Margaret Mary's Activity Center. The meeting was preceded by a dinner to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Lodge No. 133. The meeting was opened by President Anthony Trilicek.

There were 63 members and 25 visitors present.

The colors were presented by the Youth Club. Members included Flag Bearer Jeffrey Spacek, Charlie Kutil, Robby Popp, Michelle Popp, Kara Morrisey, Nicholas Morrisey and Leora Uribe. After the Pledge of Allegiance, Brother Dominic Netek led the members in singing "The Star Spangled Banner." A moment of silence was then held in honor of all deceased members.

President Trilicek introduced guests attending the 70th anniversary celebration; they included Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and his wife, Mary; District VII Director Thelma Hrncir and her daughter, Angie; District VII President Bob Bayer and his wife, Polly; District VI Director Matt Vanek and his wife, Henrietta; and other guests included Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Vanek, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Pavliska and District VII Youth Counselor Maxine Pavliska.

Brother Rudy Sefcik sent his regrets that he could not attend.

Sunday, April 12 at St. Margaret Mary's Activity Center.

Mr. and Mrs. John Holub were extended congratulations on their 47th wedding anniversary. Birthday members were honored. They included Michelle Popp, Leora Uribe, Nicholas Morrisey, District VI Director Matt Vanek, Albin Popp, Kathy Uribe, Alma Trilicek and Marie Blanar.

President Trilicek then presented a short history of Lodge No. 133.

Brother Don Netek thanked all those who helped in the preparations for the 70th anniversary celebration, especially Brother and Sister James Dlugosh, Brother Joe Spacek and Charlie Kurtz who entertained with his accordian. He then introduced guest speaker Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar. In his speech, President Leshikar highlighted the most cherished values of the Czech ancestors: 1) Freedom 2) Thrift and Hard Work 3) Development of Individuality and Group Strength Brother Netek then extended thanks to Brother Emil Matula for helping to revitalize and keep Lodge No. 133 progressing and Sister Marcella Kleprlik for preserving the history of the lodge in the scrapbooks.

Brother Bob Bayer and Sister Agnes Popp . split the pot. Brother Bayer donated his winnings to the Youth Club.

With no further business the meeting adjourned. The members enjoyed refreshments and a games party.

Lodge 177 Academy Meeting The March meeting of Lodge 177 was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Otis Beck.

Pledge to the flag was given and members remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Brother Harold Bland.

Treasurer Josie Tomastik had to leave for a ballgame; her report was given by Secretary Dorothy Lisenbe.

Eighteen members were present.

Secretary Dorothy Lisenbe thanked Helen Bland for taking the minutes in her absence last meeting.

President Beck then asked if any members were on the sick list and it

was reported Wilbert Ramm had returned home from the hospital and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Thank you cards were received from the Reese Hughes and the Harold Bland families, also the Academy Little River Improvement Association.

Treasurer's report was fantastic.

Hollie L. Moore was accepted into the lodge by an unanimous show of hands.

Bar report from Helen Bland was excellent.

Libbie Bartek sent a card and plant to the Bland family.

Kitchen report and Bingo report were good, as usual.

The trustees gave Bernie Gebala the use of the hall for May 8th; new smoke eaters are being installed at the lodge, this expense is being paid from the Bingo Dedicated Building Fund.

The Junior/Senior Prom will be held on April 24th and the FFA Banquet will be on April 30th with the lodge being donated for these functions.

Bathrooms are almost refinished and much improvement is being made at the lodge this year and, hopefully, more before the year is out.

Welcome to J.C. and Linda Johnson; glad to have you all at our meetings and come, again.

Pat Tomastik won the door prize at the meeting which was a jacket and Ann Tomastik won a floating pen.

Our lodge is most proud of all our workers in the lodge and the members who attend our meetings. We all get along so well and enjoy each other so much; it really has been pleasant these last six months and will have to give ourselves another trip for being so good!

The secretary read the minutes of our previous meeting. The financial secretary gave his report followed by the treasurer's report. All reports were approved as read.

Our lodge is getting to be the favorite meeting place for fun and dance and we thank everyone for supporting our lodge.

At our March 28th dance, we had the privilege of having Bill and Daphne Ritchie from Houston visiting our lodge expressing delight, complimenting our lodge and friendly people. They do their dancing normally at SPJST Lodge No. 172 in Pasadena and at Chandelier Ballroom at SPJST Lodge No. 88 in Houston.

NEW S...NEWS...NEWS... We will have to replace the roof on our building before fall. We are now starting a Roof Fund and would appreciate everyone's contribution because this endeavor will cost several hundred thousand dollars.

THANKS to Ann Milstead for her $20 contribution to the Scholarship Fund. We are presently taking applications for the 1987 scholarships.

Anyone who has a talent that can be shared with the youth, will be greatly appreciated.

The youth club is always open to new members. Their parents do not have to be members of the lodge for them to be a member of our youth group. Remember all those kids who will be out for a long summer vacation with not much to do. Get them involved with the SPJST Youth Club and keep them happy and busy.

The youth club still has several calendar dates left. They are only $2 and have the birthdays of all of your fellow lodge members in it. How nice it is to be remembered on our special day with a simple phone call to wish us "Happy Birthday." There is plenty of room in the squares for each day to jot things to be remembered. Several businesses have placed advertisements in this calendar, so, please patronize these businesses. Be sure and thank them for their support of our youth club. Circle Of Lodge 92, Ft. Worth Ladies'

Dear Members and Friends: Our March meeting was attended by forty - eight ladies and six men with all officers present. President Dona Hubenak presided at the meeting.

Secretary and treasurer gave their reports from our February meeting.

Dona Hubenak welcomed new members Helen Kubala, Liz Howard and guest Lynda Rangel; we were also happy to have Master Jonathon Henry Cranfield born February 26th, son of Corina and Robert Cran field, grandson of Joyce and Frankie Tesar and great - grandson of Marie and Frank Tesar.

Estabelle Hubenak reported about attending the Youth Leaders' Retreat at La Grange. They really enjoyed the trip and said Sue Meadows is a wonderful person to work with children.

Josephine Prochaska announced that there would be a dance at Lodge 92 on April, 5th with Jodie Mikula playing; sponsored by KJT. The door prize was won by Estabelle Hubenak. The door prize for April will be donated by Helen Paprskar.

Betty Billington told us a little history about Grandview in Johnson County and a mystery about it, which was very interesting.

We had previously voted to draw two names with all the members' names present. They will tell about something interesting that happened to them or about a trip they've been on.

The names drawn are Maggie Konecny and Phyllis Cihacek.

Sister Zvolanek brought Kolache Festival programs. Door prizes were brought by Sisters Mary Polasek and Sadie Kubin and our guest, Victoria Vlk. Lucky winners were Stacie Hejny, Georgia Morales and Frances Vita.

Sister Stacie Hejny volunteered to help in the Circle's gift booth at the Ennis Polka Festival. Please bring items for sale for this booth.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to March birthday Sisters Olga Ewing, Leona Jurica, Julia Laning, Mary Sebestik, Anne Staglik and Georgia Tupy. Sister Vivian Vrana surprised the sisters with a beautiful birthday cake for the March birthday celebrants. I often wondered why there are so many birthdays during the winter months. Could it be because the farmers needed the wives to help in the field during the spring and summer months? That's just a thought.

There were 32 members and 9 guests present. Guests are always welcome. 1 did not attend the March meeting. My excuse was very legitimate. I spent several days in the hospital with an inner ear problem, which I don't wish on anyone. From what I hear, it seems to be a very common illness.

I'll see you at our next meeting on April 9th. I hope it doesn't snow.

Wasn't that a surprise when the snow fell on March 29th? It was beautiful but did not last long enough. Bye now!

It seems like ages since I have written a letter, however, it has been only three months go. Time flies by so Quickly.

Since we had no meeting in January, the news will be from our February 12th and March 12th meetings. At our February meeting the regular order of business was conducted. After the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence was observed in memory of Sister Antonie Novak.

Our guests were Julie Harris, Alene Skrivanek (who renewed her membership after several years' absence), Emilie Harrison (who became a new member), Anna and Vaciav Hofman from Prague, Czechoslovakia, Bob Zvolanek, Leslie Vrla and Wesley Tupy. Welcome to the Circle, Alene and Emilie.

A thank you note was received from the Antonie Novak family for the flowers for the funeral service. Sister Wisniewski read an interesting letter from Sister Vlasta Parma, who is in the St. Joseph's residence home in Dallas. It was good to hear from her.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to January birthday Sisters Agnes Houdek, Annie Kostak, Liddie Pavelka, Mary Polasek, Helen Vrla, Jr., Anne Zabojnik and Georgia Zabojnik. We sang for February birthday Sisters Sidney Bridewell, Lillie Hejny, Stacie Hejny, Annie Taylor, Alice Roberts, Vallie Tupy, Frances Vita, Libbie Wisniewski and Rosie Zazvorka.

A get well card and money gift were sent to Sister Vita who had eye surgery, and a get well card was sent to George Novak, husband of Sister Annie Novak.

Donations to the Circle were Alice Roberts for quilt quilted; Anne Zabojnik, all occasion cards; Olga Ewing, a quilt top; Liddie Pavelka, Valentine napkins; Rosie Bednar, homebaked Valentine cookies; Mary and Bertha Mancell, material SPJST Podhrasky, dessert plates. All donations are appreciated and, on behalf of the Circle, "thank you."

Raymond Kuzell is the new resident Sister Skrivanek brought a lovely Friendship quilt made by the Circle to join the group at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in March. Staff Sisters many years ago. It was interesting to see so many names of members include Michele Trevino (NA), Lottie Jordan (NA), Jo Ann -sisters who have died and sisters who McKnight (LVN), Kay Martinez are still living.

Rest Home No. II Corner

On Monday, March 9th, the HOT e Lutheran Church of Beasley came to have services and brought cookies and had a social afterwards. They also brought prizes for Bingo. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon. We regret to hear that Rev. Gerald E. Goldapp will no longer be with us.

Monday afternoon, March 16th, Betty Seiler came from the library to show a movie.

Tuesday afternoon, March 17th, the home had a combination St. Patrick's Day and a Birthday Party for Administrator Harvey Marx.

Everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to Harvey. Margie Hall sent a St. Patrick's cup with candy decorated with balloons and the nursing staff presented him flowers. Martha Marx had a birthday cake which was decorated in green and white.

Volunteers Lydia Hortmon and Frances Muzny helped serve cake, coffee and punch to all. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon.

Wednesday, March 18th was an open hearing by the Texas Department of Health. Everyone present gave satisfactory reports.

Thursday morning, March 19th, the Assembly of God ladies from Rosenberg came to sing with the residents and visited. In the afternoon, Garland Hurtye with the Fort Bend Humane Society brought dogs for therapy for the residents.

Tuesday morning, March 24th, the Needville Baptist ladies visited and sang with the residents.

Wednesday evening, March 25th, the Bell Button and Bows from Richmond came to square dance.

Everyone enjoyed the evening.

Thursday evening, March 26th, Larry Ognoski, Fred Gerke and George Lolley provided music and singing for the residents. Everyone had a great time. Families and friends are invited to attend.

Liz Daniels, from dietary, wrote a poem about the kitchen after the remodeling.

"Complicated Kitchen Conditions" Because men were adding on a part to the kitchen which would be new, we worked under complicated kitchen conditions for some days, not just a few.

Everything was pushed from the stove on back, leaving us hardly any room and cutting us no slack.

At one point we couldn't walk on the floor, we had to use the back door.

We had to pack our food and water around, crawling under, climbing over, up and down.

We were walking in the rain, with our silverware, pots and pans.

Most mornings it was too cold, but reaching the dining room was our goal.

But we never skipped a meal and every resident ate, even though it was out of a paper plate.

We managed to serve our food hot, thanks to the electric pots.

Like one other thing that was nice, the drinks were also served cold from being kept on ice.

Everything was kept extra sanitized, as we went home every day extra tired.

Some days we'd argue, fuss and shout, but we all hung in there and toughed it out.

As Mrs. Hall and her phone calls, coached us through it all...

"Happy Birthday" for the month of March are residents Ida Hanka,

Martha Losack, Annie Stavinoha, Ben 3acica, James Little and Malcolm Tinsley and staff -- Harvey Marx, Shawnda Jones, Diane Rivers, Sally Wleczyk and Esther Foston.

The Birthday Party which was held Friday, March 27th included Louis Vacek and John Bar entertaining with accordians, piano and singing.

Everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to the residents. The "A" Flower & Gift Shop provided corsages and boutonnieres. The Ruth Circle of the Methodist Church provided cakes.

Lydia Hortmon brought a cake. Pearl Hanka brought a birthday cake for Ida Hanka. Volunteers Melva Hastings, Lydia Hortmon, Edith Schulz, Bertha Ross and Frances Muzny helped serve cake, ice cream, coffee and punch to all. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

Thanks to all the churches in the area who gave services and communion and to the volunteers who do services in the home to the residents during the month of March.

Karas of Houston This eulogistic writeup was compiled to introduce, to the readers of our Czech - American publications, another outstanding Czech musical composer Ladislav Vycpalek at the occasion of his 105th birthday anniversary at the end of February of this year. Ladislav Vycpalek, who was born on 23rd of February 1882, came from the typical Prague family. Both his father and mother were musically talented. They both belonged to the well - known choral society Slavoj and later formed a vocal quartet.

Participation of their child Ladislav, the future composer, in this quartet possibly led to his predilection for polyphony. This talented little boy learned the violin and piano at the tender age of 6 and played in the string quartets at the elementary school, at gymnasium and at the university.

There, at the university, he studied in the years 1901 - 1906 Czech and German, taking the doctorate with a dissertation on legends in Czech literature ptedev§im ze staro'des14ch apokryfii z mladosti Mariin6 a Jeilgov6 (First of all from the apocryphs in the historical old Czech writeups about the youth of Mary and Jesus). In 1905, Vycpalek prepared for the state examination in singing, which actually was a teaching diploma covering a wide range of musical subjects. He then obtained a post at the library of Prague's university in 1907, instead of going on to qualify as a teacher of German of the university level. He begun shortly to take lessons (for 4 years, 1908 - 1912) with the well known musical teacher and an outstanding composer Viterslav Novak and became a member of his circle. (Vit6zslav Novak, 1870 - 1949), was an author of extensive symphonies and cantatas. His operas ZvikovskS7 raraek, KarBtejn a Lucerna are a proof of his progressive search for constant artistic improvement.)

Ladislav Vycpalek also joined at that time Podskalska Filharmonie and regularly attended its monthly meetings at Podskalska ulice (Street), where music from different contemporary French and German novelties were played through on two pianos. During his time and Novak, Vycpalek composed, under his

8/VESTNiK—Wednesday, April 8, 1987 supervision, quite a few songs, some piano pieces and a string quartet. The Podskalska Filharmonie broke up in the WWI and Vycpalek himself fell out with Novak in 1917 through his critical stance on Novak's opera Lucerna.

Ladislav Vycpalek later developed a sincere friendship with another well known Czech composer Josef Suk, who was a son - in - law of the immortal maestro of the Czech music Antonin Dvoiak. During WWI, Vycpalek arranged his first folksong collections and in that post war era he greatly increased the range and dimensions of his output with several series of string pieces and the three largescale cantatas culminating in the Ceske requiem, composed during the Nazi victories in Europe in 1940. - - Coming back to the happier times; Vycpalek founded the university music department at its library which he directed up to his retirement in 1942.

During the first Czecholsovak Republic, he was a member of several musical organizations such as for example the Czech Academy, which he joined in 1924, and acquired administrative positions in those musical bodies. In 1928, he became a chairman of the musical section of the Umelecka Beseda, and was a member of the Advisory Committee of the Czech National Theatre in Prague. He was briefly -- during the illness of Talich -- artistic director of this musical shrine of the Czech nation. He continued to compose to an advanced age and was recognized, after the deaths of Josef Bohuslav Foerster and Viterslav, Novak, as the most important living Czech composer until his death on the 9th of January 1969. -- Musical composer Josef Bohuslav Foerster (1859 - 1951) was also a talented painter and writer; it was thus no wonder ., that he was deeply involved in a creation of songs inspired

by Czech poetry. Special place in this field have his magnificent men choir songs which were written to accompany the excellent poetry of the well - known Czech poet Josef Vaclav Sladek. J.B. Foerster also composed 5 large symphonies and six operas, where Eva (Eve), written according to a drama Gazdina roba from Gabriela Preissova, is the best known. --Ladislav Vycpalek received in 1957, at the age of 75, the title Artist of Merit and ten years later, at the age of 85, he was named National Artist. He died at the age of almost 87 years, on 9th of January 1969 in Prague.

Vycpalek's musical output is somehow narrow in its range as it does not contain any music for church or stage. Although his time for composition was limited, it is still surprising that, as a accompanied violinist and violist playing regularly in a quartet, he did not write more of the instrumental music; the four string pieces of the late twenties seem to have been written almost as a challenge.

Beside the just now mentioned string pieces and the Violin Sonatina from 1947 he left only 2 small sets ' of piano pieces (one very early, one very late), an early string quartet and a late orchestral work. Although some sources claim a lack of stringed music in Vycpalek's creativity was partially due to his cautious and fastidious nature, the fact is clear that he was quite more interested in the vocal music. This type of music involved more of his talents and could bring into play his literary tastes, refined by extensive reading and a literary education. He was excellent here and all the poetry he set was of high quality. His own literary ability is attested by his many reviews in the pre

-WWI Hudebni Revue (The Musical Review) and in the well - known publications Ltunir and Narod (Nation). From time to time he also translated for composers Novak and Suk as well as for himself; his timely translation of the Dies irae - smrt a spaseni in his Czech Requiem 'Death and Redemption" in 1940 was a solemn musical setting of the mass for the repose of raped and few months later murdered Czechoslovak Republic in 1938 - 39. Vycpalek's Czech Requiem is according to the experts a very remarkable achievement, not only imitating the rhyme and rhythmic scheme of the original but also something of its preserving onomatopoeic qualities.

(Onomatopoeia is a formation of words by imitating sounds.) Apart from Czech and German symbolist poetry which provided texts for quite a few of his songs, a major source of Vycpake's inspiration were poems of Moravia. Some of the texts and melodies from over there were incorporated into his splendid doctoral work on folk legends. His kantata o poslednich vecech eloveka (Cantata of the Last Things of Man), arguably Vycpalek's greatest musical work, is one of his most approachable because of the simplicity and directness of the folk tekt, p one of the most knowledgeable Czech musical experts says the following in his evaluation of the above musical piece: "It drew from Ladislav Vycpalek some of his most deeply - felt music, its calm moral confidence matched, for example in the final section Ejhle co je elovek?

(Lo, What Then is a Man?), by the spiritual repose that is at the heart of Vycpalek's finest work." Vycpalek's musical ideas are primary contrapunctual. He had an almost passionate belief in the fugue and used it generously in all of his major cantatas and in many of the smaller works. --- What is a fugue? It is a musical composition of the special type in which a theme is taken up successively and developed by the various instruments or voices in counterpoint. --- Vycpalek's great Kantata o poslednich vecech eloveka (Cantata of the Last Things of Man), for instance, is a monumental fugue with subjects derived from variations of a single motif. This composer also used other contrapuntal forms. Sonata Chvala housli (Praise to the Violin) includes an unaccompanied chaconne on a four - bar motif, which rises a tone or a semitone on each repetition, a device also employed in Vzhiiru srdce - sursum corda (Lift Up Your Hearts).

Ladislav Vycpalek used contrapuntal forms even in the songs: Mir (Peace) is a vocal fugue; Hlidka (The Watch) is a vocal chaconne. --- What is a chaconne? It is a stress on second beat, typically consisting of continuous variation based on repeated succession of cords. (It developed originally from the slow dances, 3 beats and measure.)

Vycpalek's harmonic texture derives almost entirely from contrapuntal complications. Did You See Czech Film, "My Sweet Little Village"?

My Sweet Little Village (Ma rozmila stiediskova vesnieka) is playing at the Bell Air Movie Theatre at 4020 Bellaire at Weslayan in Houston. This movie, which is nominated for this year's foreign film Oscar, received high marks in the reviews here in Houston

by Jeff Millar from the Houston Chronicle and from other competent evaluators.

Na Veveti devet kdo neveti, at tam Mi. (There are nine towers at Verdi castle; if you do not believe it, run there!) In other words: Seeing is believing. This Czech movie, with excellent English subtitles, is very popular with the American public here in Houston if the sellout at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on March 21st, when I attended, is any indication. And you should have heard the audience laugh!

This refreshing film is a jewel and it should be seen by everybody who is concerned about his or her heritage. I also highly recommend it to students of the Czech language. (Several students of my Czech class in Alief intend to go see it.)

Post Scriptum. I called the office of the Bell Air Cinema and was told "My Sweet Little Village" will still be playing on Saturday and Sunday, April 11th and 12th. It would thus still be playing after this notice in Vestnik.

It will be great for our ethnic cause if this movie is shown in the other cities across Texas. The Czech dedicated members of our ethnic organizations (be it SPJST, KJT, Sokol, RVOS and others) should obtain the information regarding this from the Bell Air Theatre, 4020 Bellaire Blvd., Houston, Texas 77025.

CHS Of Texas Meeting/Seminar In Rowena Saturday, May 16, 1987 is the date of the second Czech Genealogy Seminar to be held in the Concho Valley. It will be sponsored by the Czech Heritage Society of Texas and hosted by SPJST Lodge No. 49 of Rowena, Texas.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and the fee will be $2. A lunch will be served at noon by Lodge No. 49.

At 1 p.m., a meeting will be held by the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, after which the seminar will resume. A chapter of the Society will be formed

by Concho Valley Czechs from Concho, Runnels and Tom Green counties.

The District 11 spring meeting was a huge success. We had our largest attendance ever at a spring district meeting -- 250 members and guests attended our meeting. The District 11 officers wish to thank all of you for attending. We hope you all enjoyed the meeting, bus trip and fine hospitality shown to each of us by Lodge 74, Lovelady members. Thank you members of Lodge 74 for the delicious meal, the use of your facilities and for your friendly welcome and direction signs, plus all of the things you all did to make this day a success.

We also wish to thank Ronnie Rieger, Leslie Gustafson and Gene Landry and the local lodge presidents for getting their members to go and arranging the bus rides.

From The Youth Leaders Lodge 47 Seaton YC Activities Seaton Lodge No. 47 Youth Club has been very busy. February began with our making Valentine treats for the Colonial Nursing Home in Cameron. Our youth visited the residents to pass out our treats. What a "treat" it was for us to see the smiling faces among all the residents. We later enjoyed cookies and cokes at the park in Cameron.

District II skating party was well attended by our youth club. Everyone enjoyed it. Congratulations to Shannon Pechal and Jennifer Pechal for winning door prizes.

The Youth Leaders' Retreat was a great opportunity for me. This being my first year, I was able to meet leaders from all around and share ideas. It's great to know that SPJST has leaders with such enthusiasm of caring for the youth.

Our chili supper/auction fund raiser was a great success. 1 would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you present that night. Thank you for all the donations and buyers, a big THANK YOU! We were happy to see so many of you from our neighboring lodge, Cyclone. We appreciate your support. The success goes to our youth members. They all worked very hard and did a fantastic job.

March began with our club forming two Beseda circles. Our thanks and appreciation go to our leaders who have worked so hard. Both circles are doing great. Remember, practice every Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Nine of our youth club members, along with Assistant Judy Pechal and I, enjoyed a beautiful scenic tour of East Texas, visiting Lovelady, for the District II spring meeting. Everyone had a great time. To Sherry and Don McKenney and all of you at Lovelady Lodge No. 74, you made us feel so welcome. The food, the atmosphere and program were great. Thank you! I know all of District II are proud and grateful to have Frankie Klinkovsky as our DYC for another year. Thanks, Frankie, we need you.

Our next youth club meeting was planned for Sunday, April 5 at 2 p.m.

We also planned to hunt for Easter eggs after our meeting. Youngsters were told to bring a friend to join the youth club.

Well, it is a beautiful day after the snow over the weekend.

I went to District Ill outh Leaders' Training on Sunday through the snow.

1 enjoyed the meeting and thanks to Bessie and Emil Petr for the wonderful lunch.

The last monthly meeting of the Dime Box Youth Club was held on Sunday, March 29 at 1 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President Susan Spacek, and Matthew Ford led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The role was called. We didn't have the secretary's minutes due to the absence of our secretary. The treasurer's report was then read.

Under old business, it was announced that we could not paint the bridge for our community project. We decided to do the Adopt - a - Highway project. We will start this project at the next meeting. We then decided on a meeting date. The next meeting will be held on Saturday, April 18 at 11:30 a.m. Everyone is supposed to bring a sack lunch to the meeting. Drinks will be provided.

Since there was no new business, we sang "Happy Birthday" to Sue Ellen Flippin and Keith Spitzenberger, who had birthdays in March. Door prizes were then drawn. They were won by Keith Spitzenberger, Sue Ellen Flippin and Latnanda Koustelka.

The meeting was then adjourned.

After our meeting, everyone made Easter crafts and had refreshments.

Lodge 25 Ennis YC Plans Project Dear Readers, At our last meeting we decided to go bowling Saturday, March 14, in Waxahachie. Everyone was to meet at our youth leader's house at 4 p.m. I think everybody, including our youth leader, had lots of fun. On the way home we stopped at Pizza Hut and everyone got their fill.

Our Youth Leader, Linda Trojacek, encouraged everyone to participate in YAD. A Polka Festival booth was discussed as a money - making project.

Everyone was asked to help decorate the float after it has been built. All youth having Czech costumes were asked to ride in the parade.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Jaromir No. 54 at West, Texas in behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our condolences to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother EDDIE E. MIKESKA, 74; of Route 1, Abbott, Texas, who passed away 23 March 1987 in Fort Worth.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

Thursday at the West Brethren Church with Rev. Lawrence Junek officiating.

Interment followed in West Brethren Cemetery.

A prayer service was held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel. Aderhold Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Brother Mikeska was born 15 December 1912 to Frank and Albina Mikeska. He was a native of Abbott in Hill County where he lived most of his life. He married Viasta Skrivanek 28 April 1946 in Ennis. She preceded him in death on March 26, 1985. He was a retired farmer, a member of SPJST Lodge No. 54 of West and the American Legion. He was a member of the West Brethren Church. He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II. Survivors include three daughters, Betty Jean Watts of Duncanville,

Diane Blagg of Fort Worth and Patricia Ilgenstein of Austin; two brothers, Robert Mikeska of San Angelo and George Mikeska of Abbott; six sisters, Ruby Kucera of Ingleside, California, Geraldine Brezina of Fort Worth, Elfie Srubar of Abbott, Elsie Kucera of West, Bessie Surovik and Marion Adamek of Brenham; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

L. A. KUCERA, who passed away on March 16, 1987.

Brother Kucera was a former President and Chairman of the Board of Liberty Savings Association in Houston.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Kucera; daughter, Lilly Pryor; two sisters, Jennie Eckel and Marie Blair.

Funeral services were held on March 18 in St. Luke's United Methodist Church with interment at Forest Park

who passed away on Thursday, March 19, 1987, in a Temple hospital.

Brother Biels was born in Schwertner, the son of Gus and Annie Biels. He married Bessie Kudlacek in 1930. He was a retired farmer and rancher in the Holland area. He also worked in manufacturing for Chupik Corporation in Temple and Taylor Bedding Company in Taylor..

Services were held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, March 21 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bartlett, with the Rev. Clarence Roses officiating. Burial was in Holland City Cemetery.

Brother Biels was preceded in death by a brother, Edwin Biels.

Survivors include his widow, Bessie Biels of Holland; two daughters, Pauline Berg of Dallas and Shelley Pagel of Temple; one brother, Ruben Biels of Temple; two sisters, Alice use of Georgetown and Gladys Biels of Marlin and four grandchildren.

V prdbehu sezdny dostalo ptileitost mnoho hrdeft; naopak ti, ktefi byli vyiazeni po mistrovstvi sveta 1986, se jen nesnadno vraceli. Nakonec se v gak vratili vgichni, az na Jiiiho Lalu, ktery byl v nominaci pouze nahradnikem. IMPORTANT NOTICE TO SPJST IRA OWNERS A change in the Law requires that IRA Contributions must be identified as to the year for a Deposit is to be applied.

This is most important during the period, January 1. through April 15, 1987 when IRA Contributions can be applied to the previous year (1986), or the current year (1987).

This change to properly report IRA Contributions is mandated by IRS to verify the transaction through IRS Form 5498 filed by SPJST and the Individual Income Tax Form 1040 Filing Return.

Please make certain that when IRA Contributions are forwarded, that it is clearly noted on the check, or application for what particular year the deposit is to be applied.

If You Do Not Designate What Year Your IRA Contribution Is For, We Will Assume It Is For The Year Received (1987)
