On Saturday, March 7th, forty SPJST members from all over the state met for the second Annual SPJST State Taroky Tournament. The setting and beautiful day could only be surpassed by the hospitality that was shown to everyone by hosting members of Lodge 17, New Tabor.

The tournament began promptly at 10 a.m. with a noon break for a delicious home - cooked meal of turkey, dressing and trimmings provided by Lodge 17.

By mid - afternoon a group of eight advanced to the semi - final round.

The semi - finalists were: J.J. Kubala, Albert Kubala, Louis Kubala, Henry Kubala, Lydia and Ed Jansen, Carol Petty and Leona Zella.

In this issue we are publishing a picture of the San Jacinto Monument commemorating the Independence of Texas near the Houston Ship Channel and will use this method in the same manner in the drive to establish a permanent endowment for the teaching of the Czech language (Czech Chair) in the State of Texas as we did during the Statue of Liberty drive to renew it.

To this date we have received about two - fifths (approximately 40 percent -- nearly $200,000) of the five hundred thousand ($500,000) needed to establish this worthy project. We are publishing a letter from Professor Jos. J. Skrivanek, President of Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT), with a list of out - of - state donors toward establishing a Czech "Chair" of study in Texas. These individuals are NOT living in Texas and have donated nearly $20,000 for this cause -- Professor Skrivanek rightfully writes that we, in Texas, should be ashamed of ourselves by letting others do our work for us; or are we going to "Let John do it for us?" Just think if 3,000 Texas families each gave $100, it would amount to $300,000 which would make the establishment of a permanent "Czech Chair" a reality and the donation is tax - deductible because CEFT is a non - profit organization. Members and friends, think about it -- isn't this a worthy cause; we actually, in this generation, have the ability to do this for our future generations. Will you be left out?

One of the ideals and purposes in our preamble to our SPJST Constitution and Bylaws is the preservation of our Czech traditions, customs and language (heritage and culture) and it is so in other Czech founded organizations of which we are members. SPJST (a fraternal insurance Society) and RVOS (a mutual fire insurance association) have each come forward with $10,000 each.

PLEASE DONATE! Starting April 1, medicare patients can be at least partly reimbursed for some visits to optometrists. In the past, optometrists' visits were not covered by medicare unless the patient had undergone cataract surgery. But under a new federal law, medicare will help pay for the health part of an examination by an optometrist -investigation of a symptom or complaint, treatment for eye disease and, for those who had cataract surgery, glasses or contact lenses.

Medicare will pay 80 percent of approved charges after a $75 deductible has been met. For most patients, medicare still doesn't pay for prescription glasses or contacts. *** Approximately 13 percent of all travelers have a handicap requiring use of canes, braces, wheelchairs or walkers. Perhaps two or three times as many stay home because they do not know which airlines, airports, trains and hotel chains have facilities for the disabled. To help fill this void, Rod W. A multitude of competitors in this s4 billion - per - year industry promise overnight delivery of packages and letters to any address in the country.

Most carriers, except for the Postal Service's Express Mail, will pick up either at your home or job, whichever is more convenient. Or you can drop off the material at the service's nearest office. Express Mail, for example, is available at 40,000 postal facilities.

United Parcel Service has 1,000 locations, Federal Express, 900.

Compared with a 22 - cent stamp, overnight services are expensive. An overnight letter costs $10.75 via Express Mail and $14 via Federal Express. Packages are priced by weight. For example, a 10 - pound package would cost $45 at Federal Express, $21 at UPS and between $13.15 and $23.40, depending on distance, via Express Mail. if overnight delivery isn't required, you may be interested in the second - day service offered by many carriers at rates as low as half that for overnight.

That's still well above the cost of first class mail, but it may be less than the cost of a 5 percent penalty for a late mortgage payment. And it may be an attractive alternative to having your insurance canceled because you failed to make a premium payment within the grace period. It may even be an acceptable cost just to have a gift hand - delivered to make more of a splash.

When shopping for a service, find out what time of day the service must have a package in order to deliver it on time. Can it guarantee delivery to the proper destination within the time available? Many services have trouble making overnight deliveries to some locations -- especially remote ones.

Will the firm pick up or deliver during evenings, on weekends or holidays?

Are there any limitations on what can be shipped? Most carriers supply packaging designed to protect shipments from the weather and rough handling. Are you required to use it? Is there an extra charge? Will the carrier automatically supply proof of delivery? Can a missing or delayed shipment be easily traced? How much insurance does the carrier provide in case a shipment is lost? ***

From The Vice President's Office Lodge 177, Academ Proud Of History Of Giving Ever since Lodge 177 Academy, was chartered in 1973, the lodge has had a proud tradition of sharing and caring for not only its members but anyone in need.

The lodge presently has approximately eight hundred members. They have over five million dollars of life insurance coverage with the SPJST. Otis Beck is president of the lodge and like all the past presidents of Lodge 177, he is a leader by the example he sets for the membership by his hard work.

Most of the work at the lodge is spearheaded by a group of about twenty - five loyal, hardworking members. A real experience is to attend a regular Lodge 177 meeting and watch these people who have worked so hard at fund - raising (primarily regular weekly dances and bingo) display a true fraternal spirit.

They vote to give not only financial but moral support to a very broad spectrum of recipients.

Orientation For Lodge Leaders Planned For May In response- to requests from a number of you, we are pleased to announce plans for a Local Lodge Officers' Orientation. The orientation is set for Saturday, May 2, 1987 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. It will be held on the campus of the historic University of Mary Hardin - Baylor in Belton, Texas. Belton is a small town located about 4 miles south of Temple on Interstate Highway 35.

We, in the SPJST Home Office, are excited about the orientation. It will be similar to an officers' workshop but the format will be different to enable us to better address some of the changes facing our local lodge leaders.

The orientation will be geared to communicate information about the needs, problems, strengths and goals of the SPJST. It will also address plans and ideas for the future progress of the SPJST. An important objective is communication and sharing of information: The program will be designed for lodge officers but all other interested lodge leaders are also invited to attend.

Your lodge president has been provided with information and a form for preregistration. Because we need to know how many will attend, preregistration is requested before April 15th. We would like to have representatives from every lodge.

Please contact your lodge president if you plan to attend so that we can preregister you.

The information packet mailed to each lodge -president included a question and suggestion form and lodge leaders are encouraged to submit questions, problems and concern they would like to have covered. In this way, they will have the opportunity to have some input into the program.

Dear Members of District IV: Lodge No. 160 of San Angelo will be hosting the 1987 District IV meeting at the Fire Hall in Wall, Texas on Sunday, April 12th. The meeting will begin at 1 p.m.

A barbecue meal will be served after the meeting. Each family of Lodge 160 is asked to bring a dessert for the meal.

24 Cyclone To Honor Members

Dear Readers: Our March meeting was called to order by President Barbara Macek, with all officers present.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and members stood for a moment of silent prayer for the deceased.

Mr. Luther Parks, representative for the Belfalls Electric Coop, was introduced and he started off the meeting by explaining to our members the increased light bills' reason. REA has put a rate demand increase on all public places; we were confused and concerned about our large bills but now, hopefully, everyone understands.

We want to thank Mr. Parks for taking time out to come and visit us and help us understand the new billing system.

Our meeting continued with the reading of the February meeting minutes by Secretary Carol Chervenka. There were no corrections and the minutes were approved as read.

Monthly reports were given by the committee chairmen and discussed.

President Macek thanked everyone who helped with the fund - raising barbecue dinner. It was a success and we want to thank everyone who came out, hopefully, enjoyed a good meal.

During our meeting, the president brought up a problem that we have during our meetings and that is disorderly conduct. Everyone at our meeting are adults and should act as such; also, alcoholic beverages will not be allowed in the meeting area during our meeting.

There was a donation made by our lodge to Dennise Posvar/FHA Scholarship Fund at Rogers High School in memory of Dennise, who would have graduated this year.

Anyone wanting to make a personal donation needs to contact the Rogers High School office or go by the First State Bank in Rogers.

There was a lot of discussion on the Bingo again, it's still up in the air as to whether we will have it or not.

Members were asked to attend some local Bingo games to learn how other organizations conduct the games.

There will be more discussed on this subject at our next meeting.

President Macek appointed the 1987 Audit Committee. They are Chairman Arleen Tschoerner, Linda Smetanka and David Vanicek.

The NFCA is sponsoring the "Fraternalist of the Year" award to honor a person at the local level outstanding service, dedication and fraternalism. Secretary Carol Chervenka has the form required to nominate someone in your local lodge.

All entrants should be submitted no later than August 15, 1987.

This year we have 18 people receiving 50 - year membership pins from our lodge; they are local people so we hope you can make our celebration, which will be Sunday, May 3 at 12:30 p.m. for a noon luncheon. The meal will be provided by the hall, members are asked to bring a dessert. Those being honored will be receiving something in the mail soon from our secretary, so start making plans to attend.

There was some discussion on the District 11 YAD which will be held at Flag Hall this year on Sunday, July 19th. We will need to come up with some sort of a meal to serve at supper time; it needs to be a reasonable price and fairly simple; any suggestions need to be brought up at the next meeting.

A menu and price needs to be set to put in the Vestnik so people know what to expect. We hope we have a good turnout at DYAD; also remember the State YAD will be on Sunday, August 16th at Temple High School.

Those celebrating anniversaries this month are Lynn and Arleen Tschoerner, Clayton and Sherry Cabla, Joe and Lorain Haisler who are celebrating 50 wonderful years together. Birthday celebrants this month are David Vanicek, Christi Waits, Robert Macek, Christe Marek and Melissa Holtman. Hope all of you have a wonderful day.

Our March meeting was called to order by President Franklin Elles. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was recited and a moment of silence was observed for departed members.

Due to the resignation of our lodge secretary, election was held for a new secretary. Treasurer Ella Arnold was elected to do the duties of the secretary, thus combining these two offices, and which will also include being reporter, therefore, you shall be hearing from me every month.

Plans are underway for the District VI meeting to be held in Victoria on Sunday, April 5 at the Victoria Community Center Annex, beginning at I p.m. with Lodges 32, 97, 143 and 153 hosting. Katherine Wokaty and Ella Arnold will serve as chairmen of the social following the meeting. We are hoping for a 100 percent representation of lodges in this district to be present at the District VI meeting.

SPJS I Czech hest will be held at the Victoria Community Center on Sunday, .1une 28, 1987 from 12 noon to 10 p.m. More comments will be given on this affair as time goes on. Set this Sunday aside to join us for an enjoyable time.

We are sorry to report that our member, Ruby Rokyta, spent several days in DeTar Hospital in Victoria and is home again.

Ardis HuVar, daughter of Frank and Rubie HuVar, graduated magna cum laude from Texas Women's University, Denton, Texas on December 20, 1986, receiving a degree in Deaf Education. She is teaching the deaf students in Sealy, Texas. Ardis is a former recipient of the SPJST Scholarship and we are truly proud of her. Ardis and all the members of her family belong to Victoria Lodge No. 32.

We were truly happy to have our Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and his wife, Mary, and the District VI Youth Counselor Anita Roye, of El Campo, attending our February meeting.

Michael Ahlstrom brought his TV and VCR to our meeting to show the film on the Czech Texans, which was well accepted. Wanda Petras of Hillje and a member of Lodge No. 40, desiring to view this film, was a guest at our meeting.

Jarmilla Obermiller won the attendance prize. Refreshments were served by Franklin and Lois Elles.

Dear Readers: Our meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitreutz on March 8 at 3 p.m. with all officers present.

Secretary Rosemary Banik read the last month 's minutes which were approved.

She then read correspondence from the Home Office to Albert Banik and the lodge, praising his orderly handling of our lodge's financial books, which made for ease in the transition to direct billing. Our thanks also to you, Albert, for a job well done.

After the treasurer's report was given, Youth Leader Louise Burney gave her report. She stated that there were eleven youth members present for their meeting, and they plan to have an Easter egg hunt at the April meeting.

The youngsters are asked to each bring a package of candy eggs and one decorated egg; each child is also asked to bring a decorated hat or cap because these will then be modeled and judged.

Those having birthdays in March are Bennie Beran, Dawn Pavelka and Ruby Pavelka.

Lodge 40 Welcomed New Members l'he regular monthly meeting of El Campo - Hillje SP JST Lodge was held on Monday, March 16, 1987.

President Rita Yanek called the meeting to order. Second Vice President Dora Lee Kopecky led the members in Pledge of Allegiance.

A minute of silence was observed for our departed members and, especially, for recently deceased members Henrietta Mezík and James J. Hradecky, Jr. Minutes ol the previous meeting were read and approved. Reports were received from Treasurer Madeline Shimek, 1st Vice President Bennie Reck and 2nd Vice President Dora Lee Kopecky. The secretary read all correspondence.

Leona Macha, Bennie Reck and Laverne Bacak were appointed by President Rita Vanek to nominate "l-raternalist of the Year" for our lodge.

Lodge members welcomed new members Dorothy Dornak, David Larza, Karen Larza, Jill Haynie and Chris Haynie.

Second Vice President Dora Lee Kopecky and Secretary Leona Macha will be attending officers' orientation at University of Mary Hardin - Baylor University on May 2, 1987.

Sister Bernice Wahlberg is home from her recent hospital stay. A speedy recovery is wished to all sick members.

Brother Bill Malina announced that the Dramatic Club will present a Czech play entitled, "Kos to zaridi" (Kos Will Fix It) on Sunday, April 12 at 2 p.m. in the Cozy Theatre at Schulenburg.

Lodge 133 Anniversary A Big Success The time has come and gone and now the members of Lodge No. 133 will have to wait another 5 years before we celebrate our 75th anniversary, which we are all looking forward to that date. The anniversary party we just had was very successful- the meal was extremely good, and all the covered dishes that our members brought were excellent.

As chairman of the celebration, I wish to thank everyone who helped so much to make it a success. To Jimmy and Lucille Dlugosh, who were on the Social Committee, thanks for a fine job in the kitchen, also to Doris Moczygembía, Annie Stryk, Grace Rohan and Agnes Popp who took care of the placement of covered dishes on the tables that were assigned, and to Joe and Viola Spacek who are always called upon to make arrangements for the meat, etc. and to serve it as well.

Thanks to all others who came to the hall early in the morning to arrange tables, and other details that always need to be taken care of. It was indeed a fraternal effort on the members' part. Thank you, again!

I received a call from President Anthony Trilicek who informed me that the next meeting will NOT be held on the third Sunday, April 19 because it is Easter Sunday. Lodge 133 will have their regular monthly meeting on the second Sunday, April 12th. To all our members mark the date on your calendar April 12 at 2 p.m. at the Activity Hall, 1314 Fair Avenue.

It was reported to me this morning that Brother Tom Moczyembia was admitted to the Floresville hospital where he had a serious operation, but with great success. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Dear Members: Our quarterly meeting was held at Gate - Way Restaurant (formerly K Bob's) in Pleasanton, Texas on Sunday, March 8, 1987 at 11:30 a.m.

Thirteen members and two guests attended.

President Lloyd House, on arriving, asked the group if they would like to have the luncheon first before the business meeting. This was agreeable with all present. Joe Juricek gave the table blessing.

Following a meal of choice with each expressing enjoyment of the good food, the meeting was then called to order by our lodge president who asked all of us to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

President House asked Secretary Tillie Valchar to read minutes of our last meeting, which were approved as read.

A report of our member, Henry Mann, was reported being in the hospital. A get well card will be mailed to him; wishing for a speedy recovery.

Treasurer's report was given by Tillie Valchar which was approved as given.

The 1986 secretary's books, bank statements and money market funds were audited by Jim Zezula, Joe Juricek and Lydimil Ermis; approved and in good order.

The 1986 donations of $100 to Supreme Lodge Scholarship Fund, $25 in memory of Silas Smith, and $25 in memory of Frances Mutina.

Correspondence was reported pertaining to "Fraternalist of the Year" to be nominated; the nomination forms will be mailed to our lodge.

A report of amount of help each member gave to help others in 1986 will be given in June.

President Lloyd House read a letter of "Officers' Training Shop" in Belton, Texas; travel, expenses and meals furnished for one car, to register ahead of time and meeting to be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Belton.

• Activity Coordinator Tillie Valchar asked all members to bring plans to our next meeting in June for a picnic and outin g . Plans to be completed at this time.

Dear Members: On Monday, March 9 the regular membership meeting was held with 15 members present. It was a very informative meeting with several letters from the Supreme Lodge read; one informing all lodges about the "Fraternalist of the Year" selection of each lodge to be forwarded to the Supreme Lodge. A committee of three, Robert Sill, Irene Pustejovsky and Jeanne Roznos, was appointed to select the "Frateralist of the Year" for Lodge 183 by September 1st. If any of you members have someone in mind for this honor, please let your committee know so they won't miss any nominees and give everyone a fair chance to win.

Next, the hardwood dance floor was discussed and a committee of three, John Pustejovsky, Daniel Roznovsky and Ed Kral, was appointed to look into costs and report back to the next meeting.

There is also a square dance group renting the hall on the second and fourth Fridays of every month and the Financial Committee voted to use $50 of the rental income toward purchase of the hardwood floor.

This month Irene Pustejovsky won the $15 door prize and then donated it to the floor fund. Congratulations, Irene, and thank you for the good deed; also Donald Mocek lost $5 by not being at the meeting, or $15 if he had been at the last three meetings.

This is a new idea that is being tried at the meetings now to encourage more members to come to the meetings.

The Entertainment Committee has been busy and there are a lot of things going on at the lodge, so come to meetings and find out what is happening at our lodge.

Birthday Club Of Lodge No. 88 The Birthday Club Sisters met for their regular monthly meeting on March 11, 1987.

President Rita Alexander opened the meeting. Rosalee Kostom read the minutes of our previous meeting, which were approved as read. She also read communications from Mrs. Maria Pokluda, Jeff Murray, Thomas Jecmenek, and a thank you note from Mrs. Pokluda for the memorial which was given to the lodge in memory of her husband.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the financial report.

Our Sunshine Lady, Mrs. Mary Kosut, gave the card report.

Our known sick are Herbert Jarisch (husband of Emma, a Birthday Club Sister) is very sick, Mary Johnson had eye surgery this week, Louise Chudej is sick with inner ear trouble, Louise Kadlecek (who has been with her daughter, Mary Louise in Dallas for a week due to surgery) 1 . 1orena Taake is again facing surgery, Alice Bily's husband is in the hospital for hip surgery and Betty Kulhanek's mother is very ill. All these people need our prayers and cards.

President Rita announced a Fiesta Dinner at the lodge on April 1 at 12 noon. The Birthday Club Sisters will prepare the dinner. Tickets are $3 and must be bought in advance. We will appreciate anyone participating.

District V meeting and dinner was at Lodge 88 with good food prepared by Annie Vala and her dependable helpers, also the delicious pastry furnished by our club members.

On June 1, 1987 is Splash Day and Homecoming, the Birthday Club will have a fund - raising project and pastry booth. We hope that we sell tickets to all who attend for the nice cash prizes and a quilt, donated by Mary Johnson.

Fickets will be sold in the lobby every Thursday evening.

The March birthday celebrants are Martha Sacho, Bessie Dewer, Kathy Trefell and Ann Elzner. "Happy Birthday" was sung to them.

Our hostesses for March were Bessie Lero, Martha Sacho, Josephine Bishop and Martha Walla.

Mary Schenburn made a motion, seconded by Della Kadlecek, to have a free dinner at Wyatt's Cafeteria on Wednesday, March 25 at 11 a.m. The motion passed.

Friendship Club Of Fort Worth Report Dear Members and Friends: Twenty - seven members and guest, Nadine Sales, enjoyed another day of food, games and fellowship.

We made welcome our new member, Ezra Walker, whom I have known since childhood years when we both attended elementary school in Colleyville. It is always nice to see old acquaintances and talk about "old times."

The birthday members for March were Clem Oujesky, Maria Prill, Jo Prochaska, Carrie Milan and Monte North. We also included Sunshine Easley in our, birthday wishes.

The five - dollar door prize was donated by Mary Pavey and won by Bessie Brizina.

Our congratulations are sent to Corina and Robert Cranfield to whom their first child was born on February 26th -- a boy, Jonathan Henry. The proud grandparents are Joyce and Frankie Tesar, and great grandparents, Mary and Frank Tesar.

Also, our congratulations to Bunny and Johnny Tesar for becoming parents of a girl, Laura Elizabeth, born on February 28th and whose grandparents are Mary and Frank Tesar.

Many members of our club were saddened to hear that our friend, Joe Skrasek, died on February 22nd. My husband and I were attending the dance in Ennis when Joe had this massive heart attack. As always and prior to the start of the dance, Joe would recount many adventures he experienced while visiting our farm in the 1930s. Joe's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Polasek, lived on our acreage and assisted in the farm operations. Helen's and Joe's presence at dances will be missed by all their friends here and as far away states as Ohio, Wisconsin and Nebraska. We express our condolences to his wife, Helen, and their two sons and their families; also to the one brother, Willie, and the four sisters, Frances, Toni, Mary and Lillie and their families.

We also express our sympathy to the Linda Krenek Thom family for the loss of her son, Kenneth Thom, who passed away on March 2nd.

We extend congratulations to Lori Steinman and John Pace, who were married on Saturday, March 14th.

Lori is the daughter of our Vice President Rose Steinman.

Dallas Circle Of Czech Women On Thursday, March 5, we met at 10:30 a.m. for our monthly meeting.

We watched the second part of the film of the Podluzan group and so many commented on how much they enjoyed watching the dancers and musicians in colorful costumes.

After the film, President Zvolanek opened the meeting with the pledge to our flag. A moment of silence was held for Irwin Voss (husband of Mildred Voss), Pauline Trojacek Gajdica (daughter of John Trojacek, stepdaughter of Evelyn 1 rojacek, and niece of Adelle VIk), also for Fred Roberts (brother - in - law of Alice Roberts).

Our guests were Ella Mae Faraizl, Stacie Athas, Ruth Chmelar, Charlie Kocian, Bob Zvolanek, Roy Alholm, Julius Podhrasky, Phil Reames, Frank Noska, Stanley Patak, Frank Houzvicka and Alvin Elsik.

Our Circle voted to contribute towards Jerry Bartos' campaign who is running for City Council; he is Ella Bartos' son.

We discussed inviting guest speakers to our meeting such as from Cancer and Kidney Foundations.

Alice Roberts stated more prizes are needed at our meetings. A motion to bring a gift and win two gifts was made. We approved this motion. From now on, we are to allow others to win so we will limit two gifts per member or guest.

Evelyn Salac invited everyone to attend the Anniversary DanceProgram at Lodge No. 84 on Sunday, March 15th.

Stanley Patak reminded everyone of the 17th Annual Kolache Festival on April 5 at the Catholic Czech Club.

Doors will open at 10 a.m., so come out for a day of good food, socializing and dancing.

Frances Jurcik and President Zvolanek told us about the flower show at the DeGolyer Estate. Tuesdays are free and carts are available for those who cannot do much walking.

The bulbs and flowers are beautiful at this time of the year.

The Czech families in the Concho Basin will be able to attend another Czech Genealogy Seminar to be held on May 15, 1987. This seminar will be in the Rowena SPJST Lodge No. 49 Hall, with registration and browsing to start at 9:30 a.m.

For their generosity, we are really grateful; but doesn't this make us a little ashamed of many Texans who have not contributed anything yet? CEFT hopes that we all will accelerate our giving now and not wait to see if we can do it. Many have already contributed more than once and we are not talking about pledgers.

We hope that everyone understands that all people, who are interested in anything Czech, wherever they are living, will be allowed to come and make use of the facilities here in Texas.

The history of Czech, Moravian and Slovak immigrants must be preserved.

Researchers will be looking for cultural, artistic, religious, political, genealogical, even anthropological materials. Our task is to collect materials after we have set up our program at a university. We are hoping that, in the future, anybody and everybody will know that if one or wants to learn to speak Czech or learn about anything Czech, he or she will be told: "Go to the University of Texas and you will find the answer, if there is one." BEDRICH SMETANA Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884) was born in Litomy§1, Bohemia, near Pardubice. He was a leading composer of Bohemia and tried to produce a Bohemian (Czech) national music based on folk songs and folk dances.

An example of this is The Bartered Bride (1866), one of the greatest of all comic operas. Two Widows (1873), The Kiss (1875 - 1876), and The Secret (1877 - 1878) are some of his other operas. A cycle of six symphonic poems which he composed was called My Country. This ranks foremost among his orchestral works and contains one of his best - known works, The Moldau.

From 1856 to 1861 he conducted the Goteborg, Sweden orchestra. In 1866 he became conductor of the National Theater in Prague and resigned the position in 1874 when he suddenly became deaf. After this he devoted his time exclusively to composition.

Letters From The Youth Lodge 24, Cyclone YC Activities Dear Readers, The March meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was held on March 11, 1987, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

President Christy Marek called the meeting to order. Craig Waits and Rodney Posvar led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The roll was called; present were 27 members, 2 adults, Mrs. Jane Bruggman and Mrs. Nancy Posvar and one guest, Chad Bruggman. treasurer Janet Macek gave her report. Our new balance was $479.50.

We made over $200 on the fund raising project and bake, sale at the mother lodge barbecue held in February.

Our social for the month of March was a donkey basketball game held on March 20, at the Rogers High School Gym. We all had a super time.

Our April social will be a fun - day.

This will be held on April 12th. We will probably have an Easter hunt for the smaller youth, while the bigger youth will play games. More information will be supplied at the next meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m.

30 YC Discussed Activities Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held its monthly meeting on March 1, 1987 at the Taiton Community Center.

Our meeting was called to order by President Marcy Dorotik. Minutes were read by Secretary Jean Dorotik and the treasurer's report was given by Treasurer Linda Treumer.

We discussed the District VI meeting which will be held on Sunday, April 5th in Victoria. We would like small donations for the booth at this district meeting.

Our next club meeting will be held on the second Sunday, April 12th and we ask each family to bring six or more decorated hard - boiled eggs for the Easter egg hunt that we will have if the weather permits.

On April 11th will be the District VI training class held at the WCEC; this is the Saturday before our meeting in April. Please try to attend!

Craft project for the month of April is for everyone to make an Easter basket and the refreshments will be served by Mrs. Anthony Dorotik and Mrs. Karen Kaspar.

The March 1, 1987 meeting/social of Lodge No. 32 Youth Club was called to order at 3 p.m. by President Jason Motal.

The register was read and there were nine members and four adults present.

Minutes were read and approved as read. Eric Motal gave the treasurer's report and the balance is $468.

Plans for the booth and skit were discussed. The youth members enjoyed having nachos and red hots for refreshments. Refreshments were provided by the Waida family.

After the meeting activities included basketball and playground games and activities.

Dear Vestnik Readers, On March 1st Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club called its meeting to order at 2 p.m. by Michael Morris. Present were 31 members and 6 guests. The guests were Heath Novosad, Shannon Pechal, Bill Schneider, Janna Schneider, Lori Kohutek and Joshua Welch. We had 3 new members this month, they are Russell Wier, Amy Kohutek and Jon Gersbach.

Diane Pavelka led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Club Motto.

Minutes from our last meeting were read by Secretary Melanie Koslovsky and were approved.

Our fund - raisers, held on February 22nd, were a great success. Thanks to all who donated auction items and desserts; also, a big thank you from all the youth members to everyone who came out to support us.

This month we began practicing Beseda dancing. These practices will be held on Thursday nights at 7:30 p.m.

This month's social will be at Wonderland Park on Sunday, March 15th. We are to meet at the park at 2 p.m.

Sammy Crawford celebrated his birthday this month. Door prizes were won by Daryl Kortis and Gary Skrabanek.

Our meeting was held on March 12, 1987 at 7 p.m. There were 29 members and 8 parents present. We also had 4 new members who joined our club. We are happy to have them.

Sister Annie Jurach was born 24 February 1892 in Lavaca County, l'exas to the late Vincent James and Caroline (Herchek) Jurach.

Surviving her is a sister, Carrie Mae Nolte of Westhoff.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Monday, February 23 with the Rev. Edward C . Bartsch officiating at the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Westhoff, Texas. Burial was in the Westhoff Cemetery under the direction of Oak Memorial Funeral Home of Cuero.

Sister Annie received her 50 - year membership pin with the SPJST in 1983.

Of Sympathy On behalf on the entire membership of Lodge Jaromir No. 54 in West, the Resolution Committee wishes to express its condolences to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother of longstanding FRANK VOLCIK, 94, of West (McLennan County), I exas who died Thursday afternoon, 5 March 1987 at a local nursing home.

Born 27 March 1892 in Chota, Czechoslovakia, he was the son of Paul and Annie \i olcik. On July 20, 1915 he married Agnes Kovar of Granger, Texas who preceded him in death on 25 June 1985.

Brother Volcik was a farmer and worked with Swift and Company for 12 years.

Brother Volcik was a member of West Brethren Church.

He joined the SPJS I on 9 March 1913, who was the oldest member of Lodge 54 for 74 years.

In 1984 Brother Volcik with his wife were selected as the oldest married couple and that same year they had the honor to ride in the West lest Parade while Brother Volcik served as parade marshal.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Law rence Junek at the West Brethren Church on March 7th at 11 a.m. Interment followed in West Brethren Cemetery under the direction of Aderhold Funeral Home.

Pallbearers"` were Harry Volcik, Larry Volcik, James Holacek, Erwin Janek, Wayne Haug and Paul KobY.,,

Honorary pallbearers included Terry Barton, Darryl Barton, Jerry Haug, Daniel Deiterman, Wilburn Willis, Dr. B.D. Pierce and Fred Salazar.

In Memoriam Albina Dolezal, who was a member of SPJST Lodge Rosenberg No. 175, passed away on Saturday, March 7, 1987. For the past 12 years she lived with her daughter and son - in - law, Olga and Harvey Measels in Alvin, I exas.

Sister Albina was born in Fayetteville (Fayette County) Texas on December 16, 1891 to John and Rosie Spacek.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. on March 9 at Froberg Funeral Chapel in Alvin. Services were held on Tuesday, March 10 at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. James Miller officiating. Graveside services were held by Rev. L. Angell of St. IVlichael's Catholic Church of Needville at the Calvary Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter, Olga Measels, Frank A. Dolezal; two sisters, Lillie Follett and Cecelia Snedecor; two brothers, John E. Spacek and Emil Spacek; also five grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.

Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in West.

Rosary was recited Sunday night at Kotch Funeral Home Chapel also in West.

Brother Makovy was born near West (McLennan County) Texas on 27 January 1921. He was married to Margaret Kaluza on 1 October, 1946, in West; she preceded him in death on 12 November 1984.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 2305, KJT Society No. 31, and SPJST Lodge No. 54 since 1972.

Brother Makovy was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of

He owned Charlie Sheet Metal Works for 30 years.

Survivors include two sons, Ernie Makovy of Arlington and Leo Makovy of Eddy; four daughters, Mrs. Tommy (Jeanette) Petter, Mrs. Doug (Bernice) Dulock and Mrs. Tommy (Barbara) Moore, all of West and Nancy Makovy of Rowlett; two brothers, John Makovy and Alois Makovy, both of West; two sisters, Olga Whitley of Dallas and Lillie Canady of Waco and 14 grandchildren.

The family has designated St. Mary's School Endowment Fund for memorials.

Sid Pokladnik Temple, Texas

Deserved Recognition Dear Friends and Members: I noted with great interest the Vestnik issue of February 18th and the picture and piece about Brother Sid Pokladnik. However, it barely scratched the surface about his many activities in the SPJST and the world of fraternalism. Ihis is an attempt to till in some o f the "gaps" and highlight the record of Brother Pokladnik's fraternal activities over a long period of time and in many capacities.

Brother Sid's accomplishments are so numerous that I must state, very frankly, that I have most likely overlooked some of those accomplishments. I first met Sid in the late 50's when 1 first located in Dallas after graduating from - NTSU in Denton. I had met Sid through another active Dallas fraternalist, Stanley Patak.

Sid Pokladnik first joined the SPJST and Lodge 84 in Dallas on 1 January 1929 at the age of 16. He was awarded his 50 - year pin in 1979, so he's been a member close to 60 years.

He served Lodge 84 as president for 13 years. In addition, he has been very active in his local lodge activities throughout his adult years.

He was active in and promoted the Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council for over 20 years and has been an active participant in that organization since.

Sid has always been active in Czech related events, and served as chairman and vice chairman of Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas on several

occasions and is still involved and active to the present time.

He organized the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra 20 years ago. This group has performed at many festive occasions, SPJST Conventions, Sokol Slets, Czech Days at the State Fair, and many other events.

Sid had previously organized and led a Czech band (The Sid Pokladnik Orchestra) which played over Dallas Radio Station WRR for a number of years and at functions around the state.

He served on the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home(s) Board of Directors, both as chairman and vice chairman for 20 years. He was one of the original donors to the Taylor S.P.J.S.1 . Rest Home in the 1956 Temple Convention.

I ie and the late J.M. Skrabanek put up the security for loans on the second rest home in Needville in the late 60's.

Sid served District III as its first president in the 1950s when the districts were created.

Brother Pokladnik served as vice chairman of the 1956 SPJST Convention in Temple; also of the 1960 Convention in San Antonio; the 1964 Convention in Waco, and the 1968 Convention in Dallas.

He was elected chairman of the 1972 Convention in Houston and has been elected chairman of every convention since that time.

He was elected to the SPJST Supreme Lodge as District III director in the 1964 Waco convention, and has served in that capacity since that time, for a total of 22 years, as of 1 January 1987. He has served as chairman of the SPJST Board of Directors since the 1984 Convention.

He played a key role in the reactivation of Lodge 66, Waco after it appeared that that lodge was on the verge of disbanding. He appealed to the members in a special meeting in the Ed Mazanec home in June of 1953.

He made donations to many lodges in District 111, courtesy Rudolph's Market, which he and his family own.

His place of business has been the scene of many bake sales, benefiting SPJST lodges and other worthy organizations.

He served on the Board of Directors of the Texas Fraternal Congress for 3 years, advancing to the presidency of the TI.C. He served on the Board of Directors of the National Fraternal Congress, made up of representatives of 100 Fraternal Benefit Societies in the US and Canada, and served as an officer of several NFC Sections over a period of many years. (President of the Fraternal Section and also of the Fraternal Monitor Committee.)

It can be stated that Sid has been active in lodge fraternal activities since he first joined the SPJST in 1929, and on the state and national level since 1965 - a combined total of 58 years in active fraternal work - a very notable achievement!

As stated at the outset, I have probably left out something, but I have done my best to research the record and make it complete as possible. I'm sure others in the Dallas area can add to this information.

Sid, our hats are off to you and we salute you. We know that on numerous occasions you've given much credit to the help and support of your family, particulary your dear wife Justine, so these sentiments also apply, in great measure, to her. Of Interest Are Our Kids Ruining Their Hearing

By Richard L. Riess, Ph.D. A casual observation of teenagers indicate that they enjoy loud things such as music, televison, cars, and motorcycles. Unfortunately, noise takes its toll on hearing. Studies Indicate that more than 14 million U.S. citizens suffer from some type of hearing loss.

Much of this hearing loss can be linked to our evposure to noise.

Cultures which have little excessive noise exhibit little or no hearing loss even in their aged population.

Most of us are born with normal hearing. We also are born with "hearing to spare" as we actually use only a small portion of our hearing range for communication. Loss of a significant amount of hearing can occur before our ability to communicate is impaired.

Hearing loss from noise begins early in life and usually goes unnoticed.

Loud toys and household appliances expose children to noise. Many children cry when a vacuum is running. 1 he noise may be so loud it reaches the pain threshold of these young, sensitive ears.

Later, cap guns and fireworks take their toll on hearing. Many children have had their hearing permanently damaged from fireworks. Other youths enjoy target shooting and hunting with rifles, shotguns, and handguns. Such loud weapons cause significant hearing loss if good ear protection is not used.

Any doubt that firing weapons will cause hearing loss can be eliminated by studying hearing tests of gun club members. One study noted that even the twelve and thirteen - year - old members had significant, permanent hearing loss.

Few individuals realize the impact that miniaturized •radios and cassette players have on hearing. Rock concerts, playing in rock bands, loud car radios and home stereo systems all contribute to our noise exposure and uture hearing problems.

HOW MUCH NOISE IS TOO MUCH? Most research has been aimed at protecting the hearing of workers in industry. A steady noise level of 85 dB (decibels) has been determined to be a safe level to work in for eight hours.

Some ears are more sensitive to noise, so damage may occur to these individuals even at lower decibels.

Noises in excess of 85 dB are safe if a person is exposed for a short period of time, but once above 100 to 105 dB

even exposures of short duration are dangerous.

Fortunately is rare that a single exposure to loud noise damages hearing. The human body has the capacity to heal itself if injuries are not too severe, but repeated injuries to the tiny hair cells within the ear that enable us to hear can destroy the hearing which those hair cells provided.

WARNING SIGNS Certain warning signs indicate that a person has been exposed to excessively loud noise. Ringing in the ears following noise, diminished hearing following noise, difficulty hearing or sound distortion indicates hearing has been temporarily impaired. Having to yell to be heard or to hear oneself indicates that the noise level is damaging.

Heredity is thought to be a predisposing factor in noise induced hearing loss. If a relative has suffered early hearing loss, you could have inherited such a trait. It is advisable to have a baseline hearing test for comparative purposes at future dates.

Protective measures can then be taken to preserve hearing if a variance is noted following the initial test.

WHAT TO DO Lducation: Parents need to be better informed in order to warn their children about the consequences of noise exposure. The public appears to be aware of noise as a nuisance, but not of the relationship between noise and hearing loss. Schools could incorporate such information into health classes.

We certainly are not advocating eliminating fun and pleasure from life in order to preserve hearing, but we do advocate the use of ear protection while participating in noisy activities.

EAR PROTECTORS Ear protectors are readily available at Scott and White. Inexpensive foam plugs work very \sell and are comfortable. Custom made earplugs are available. These are formed to your ear and are more effective than the foam plugs, especially when used in combination with earmuffs. You may have noticed airport personnel using the earmuff protectors.

Common sense will help you when listening to music. Volume on the devices we use can be reduced and protection can be worn at rock concerts.

Our noisy U.S. society is ruining its hearing. Recreational noise, which younger persons tend to enjoy the most, is a major risk of future hearing problems. Many popular activities and hobbies are excessively noisy.

Education, properly used e tr protection and common sense can save hearing and still allow us to enjoy ourselves.

That was the day for gaity. After six weeks of Lent, the time of sacrifice, came Easter Day (Hod Bo21 velikonoeni,) as a day of rejoicing because of Christ's Resurrection, but that still was a day full of deep religious meaning— a solemn day. Adding of another holiday on Monday gave opportunity for more wordly signs of joy. The boys, from toddlers to young unmarried men, were pursu ing girls with gaily decorated whips made of young willow branches. The girls could avoid a "whipping" only by offering the fellows fancily-painted Easter eggs. Some were frgsh eggs while the more elaborately painted ones were only shells. They were fine examples of folk art. In the Eastern part of the country, the customs called also for practical jokes like pouring of cold water over an unsuspecting victim, etc. It was not unusual to have a dance on Monday just to give an outlet to the vivacity of the people pinned up during Lent.

Another occasion for a celebration is the Namesday or the Birthday. In this country, one's Namesday is rarely celebrated, but in Czechoslovakia, it is put on the same level as the Birthday.

On the days of popular patron saints, such as St. Joseph, St. Wenceslaus (Vaclav) or St. Anna, it is not uncommon to have bands of musicians going from one Joseph's house to another and serenading him. Also dances are often organized on the nearest Saturday and named Josefska, Vacla yska or Annenska zabava. The word "zabava" stands for entertainment, but is often used also to mean dance. On one's Namesday or Birthday, people are congratulated as follows: V§ecko nejlep§i k svatku— Everything best for your Namesday.

1) When addressing a person we use a special case, the vocative. nouns ending in hard consonants take -e — pane! kamarade! Karle! nouns ending in g, k, h, ch take tatinku! soudruhu! hochu!

-u nouns ending in soft consonants take — pfiteli! mai! nouns ending in -ec take -ee — chlapee! °tee! nouns ending in -a take -o — babieko! Aleno! Honzo!

Other nouns, all nouns in plural and all adjectives and pronouns have no special vocative form and use the nominative instead.
