Attend Your District Meeting *** SUCCESS Success depends largely on opportunity promptly utilized. Some men would pass through a gold mine without noticing anything precious.

Our members and readers who read these columns each week get some information which, your editor feels, is helpful and informative to all in various ways in the daily lives of all of us, especially in the fraternal walks of life. It is hoped that some facets of the editorials are of some gain to those who read these lines.

These words written today are hoped to get our members to do some serious thinking about the amount of SPJST Life Insurance each one of you carry on yourself! Do some serious thinking about this; how much insurance do you have? If your insurance is not SPJST Life Insurance, how does it compare with SPJST? Do you receive premium refunds from it?

Are your payments as low as SPJST's?

Do you have as many benefits with it as you would if it was SPJST insurance? These are just some questions you may want to investigate, however, the main question you should ask yourself is: "Do I have enough life insurance for present - day conditions?"

Remember, those life insurance policies or certificates of previous years have decreased in amount of what they are worth in value in these inflated days -- this means that inflation has increased the cost of food, living, funerals, etc. so that, even though $2,000 of life insurance is still $2,000, it will not buy as much as it would have when you bought it. All of our members are urged to investigate the new plans of insurance SPJST now offers such as the Lone Pay Life Plan, Flexible Protector Plan (Universal Life), Annuity, IRA, etc. and you will find these the best you can find. Check into these plans with your SPJST Sales Representative and get these plans explained!

Our sales representatives are also encouraged to check the insurance amount of members they had signed up in previous years and see if they probably may need more insurance or they may be interested in newer plans of insurance or investment such as Annuities or IRAs. Let us sell our members SPJST Life Insurance, instead of allowing some other life insurance salesperson get their foot into our members' doors! *** After Texas declared its independence 2 March 1836 at Washington - on - the Brazos which is celebrated every year, gives us an indication that those representatives present tried very hard to form independence for all of us to live an easier life.

Incidently, this historical location lies in the SPJST District I area; we feel nearly every member is aware of the fact. The famous "Remember The Alamo" lies in the ever - fast growing City of San Antonio which is located in the District VII area, where over 300 SPJST delegates with its officials assembled for picture - taking while attending the 1980 convention.

Another historical place is the San Jacinto Battle Ground and, of course, the famous NASA are located within District V. Even though Texas officially came into the statehood 29 December 1845, Texans celebrate the occasion March 2nd. Texas is also known to hold over 500 fair events, expositions, as well as festivals each year; more than any other state! The greatest event is presumably the State Fair, held approximately 16 days in Dallas located in District III. We have a multitude of SPJST members who participate in their neighboring city/town festivals on a huge scale; namely, the Czechfest in Rosenberg, Czech Heritage Day in Corpus Christi, Ennis Polka Festival, Houston International Festival, Aquafest in Austin, Texas Folklife Festival in San Antonio, Westfest at West, and Czech Day in Dallas. (We could go on and on naming more smaller festivals, however, space at this time, does not allow.)

The present slogan entitled, "Don't Mess With Texas" is fitting for its everyday living, therefore, let us continue keeping our Lone Star State clean and what it meant to be by our Texas forefathers!

High Schoolers. Participating in summer programs offered by many colleges has long been a popular way for high school students to find out what campus life is all about. The difficulty has always been a paucity of choices. Now, help is available with "Summer on Campus: College Experiences for High School Students," a recent guide that lists 100 programs covering many interests including theater, computers, sciences, math and art. These programs -- aimed at students between their junior and senior years -- last a week to three months. Students attend classes, live in dormitories and meet professors.

Costs range from $230 for five days at New York State's Alfred University to $2,250 for six weeks at Atlanta's Emory University or more elsewhere.

The book costs $7.95 from Transemantics, Inc. 1601 Connecticut Avenue, N.W., Suite 500, Washington, D.C. 20009. *** Those new child - safety games focus too much attention on protection from strangers and not enough on dangers at home, warns Sally Cantor, a child abuse therapist at Delaware Psychiatric Associates in Wilmington, Delaware. Cantor studied five of the games, Play It Safe, Safely Home, Let's Be Safe, Don't Talk To Strangers and Lifesaver Games. The games, she says, fail to address the sad fact that most child - abduction and abuse cases involve someone that the child knows -- a family member or neighbor, not a stranger. Despite this disadvantage, Cantor argues that the games are useful because they help parents talk with their children about safety, a subject that many parents find hard to approach. ***

A change in the Law requires that IRA Contributions must be identified as to the year for which a Deposit is to be applied.

This is most important during the period, January 1 through April 15, 1987 when IRA Contributions can be applied to the previous year (1986), or the current year (1987).

This change to properly report IRA Contributions is mandated

by IRS to verify the transaction through IRS Form 5498 filed by SPJST and the Individual Income Tax Form 1040 Filing Return.

Please make certain that when IRA Contributions are forwarded, that it is clearly noted on the check, or application for what particular year the deposit is to be applied.

4, Hallettsville Activities

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, February 8, 1987 at the Grant Building. The meeting was called to order by President Annie Vahalik followed by the pledge to the United States flag led

by Janelle Chudej assisted by Nicholas Vahalik.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the last meeting, which were approved after minor corrections. Correspondence followed. Secretary Holy also read a list of 50 - year members for 1987; namely, Margaret Bucek, Clarence E. Haas, Harvey M. Haas, Louis Kartman, Hermina A. Marek, Ella Morisak and Otto E. Orsak. They will receive their pins in the mail.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Youth Leader Gaynell Chudej made their reports. Vice President Gay Galetka reported there are no plans now for the Grant Building by the City of Hallettsville.

Members were reminded of the District VI meeting to be held on Sunday, April 5 at the Victoria Community Center Annex at 1 p.m. hosted by Victoria, Placedo, Inez and LaSalle lodges.

4/VESTNiK—Wednesday, March 4, 1987 Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka gave his report. The annual report of the lodge will be given at the next meeting. The meeting then adjourned.

Refreshments and lunch were served. Members present with a birthday in January, February and March were honored; they included Gaynell Chudej, Ida Neubauer, John Galetka and Philip Vahalik. Sister Ida Neubauer won the birthday cake.

A Valentine candy guessing game was won by Ida Neubauer. Door prize winner was Nicholas Vahalik.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, March 8 at the Grant Building beginning at 2 p.m. Refreshments and lunch will be served as usual. Members and their families are invited to attend.

Our lodge meeting was called to order on Sunday, February 8 at 2 p.m. with President Ladis Navr atil presiding.

Lad Zatopek led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance; the lodge members remained standing in silent tribute to deceased members.

Members receiving their 50 - year membership pins for 1987 are Jerry Valchar, George Schiller, Tillie Blum, Annie Chupik, Henry Chupik and Leonard Hurta. These members will be honored at a future meeting.

Millie Schiller was our guest.

The next meeting will be on Sunday, March 8 at 2 p.m.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The anniversary celebration held on Sunday, February 15 was attended by a large crowd. Everyone enjoyed the various activities planned for the day, including the braised - beef dinner, the performance by Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra, Bingo and the Ray Jurecka dance.

Brother J.L. Pokluda passed away on February 14, 1987. Services were held on February 17 with interment at Forest Park Lawndale. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Brother Pokluda.

Brother Henry Kite is home following a short hospital visit and we wish him a speedy recovery.

The Choral Club held a meeting on February 16 and the following officers were elected for 1987: President -- Gene Barcak Secretary -- Evelyn Walla

Adult plates will be available for $4 and mini - plates will be $2.50. The Birthday Club Sisters will appreciate pastry donations. The Lodge 88 Choral Club and Concert Orchestra will perform from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and the meeting will convene at 1:30 p.m. The District V officers will be elected at this meeting; also, the youth will present a program. Door prizes will be awarded and refreshments will be served following the meeting.

The monthly meeting of Lodge 88 will be held on Monday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m.

The upcoming dances include: Saturday, March 7 -- Czech Harvesters from Dallas Saturday, March 14 -- Phil Gray; admission is $15 per couple and the DRESS CODE will be observed Saturday, March 21 -- Vrazels Please remember that the dances are from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Floresville Lodge Approved Contributions Lodge No. 107 held its regular monthly meeting on February 8, 1987 at 4 p.m.

President Bayer called our meeting to order and the pledge was led by Trey Bielefeld. All officers answered roll call.

Helen Bayer was reported on the sick list again. We wish her a speedy recovery.

President Bayer announced the sad news of the death of Museum Curator Otto Hanus who will be missed by all visitors to the SPJST Museum in Temple. Our sincerest condolences to his wife and family.

The lodge voted to honor our 50 year pin recipients with a dinner and meeting for the presentation. The lodge will furnish barbecue chicken and the members are asked to bring a side dish of vegetable or dessert. This dinner and meeting will be held on March 8, 1987 at 1 p.m. The honorees are to ask their families to join them at the hall for the meal and program. We hope to have a large crowd attending.

The District Vii youth counselor and youth leader gave a report on activities planned for our youth and youth leaders for the summer months.

President Bayer gave a financial report and the lodge voted to make the following donations: $200 Floresville Volunteer Fire Department $200 -- Floresville EMS $200 -- Lodge 107 Youth Club $200 -- Wilson County Senior Citizens Van Fund The door prize was awarded to Stephanie Burleson.

Our meeting adjourned and refreshments were served.

FEBRUARY 1987 Our meeting on February 8th opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our departed member, Sister Mildred Kamas.

New officers for the upcoming year are: President -- Kenneth W. Get well cards were sent to members Eugene Parma and Anthony Parma.

Fraternal Council Representative Helen Vrla stated that Lodge 130 hosts the February 19 meeting and asked members to bring desserts.

Beseda Director Sister Helen Vrla reported on a training session that the Texas Czech Beseda dancers held. The Louisiana Czech Heritage Society in Libuse, Louisiana, requested their assistance in learning the Ceska Beseda the weekend of February 6th and 7th.

Instructors were Brother Arnold and Sister Helen Vrla, Brother Bob and Sister Helen Oates. The training was held on Saturday and on Sunday, with 5 circles of adults and youth participating. The group was very attentive and enthusiastic. The purpose of their learning the Beseda was to be able to perform it at their third annual Louisiana Czech Heritage Society Festival to be held on March 14th and 15th.

Rules and Regulations will be voted on at the next meeting, which will be held on March 8th. The meeting was followed by dinner which was enjoyed by all.

133, San Antonio Meeting Lodge

Members of Lodge No. 133, San Antonio met in St. Margaret Mary's Activity Center on February 15 at 2 p.m. The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for the deceased members.

After reading of the minutes, reports were given by our various committees. The Entertainment Committee showed donations from Brother Don Netek and Brother and Sister Frank Fajkus. The Anniversary Committee reported the celebration of two anniversaries; Brother and Sister Emil E. Matula celebrated their 41st anniversary, Brother and Sister Bill Mares celebrated their 45th anniversary and were presented with a corsage and boutonniere from our lodge.

Julian Ronald Mattes, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Moczygemba, was welcomed into the lodge as a new member.

Brother Don Netek, chairman of our celebration of the 70th Lodge 133 anniversary, then made some announcements in reference to the March 15th celebration. The hall will be open at 11 a.m. with registration beginning at 12 noon. Dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m. The meat will be furnished by our lodge. Members are asked to bring a vegetable dish and a pastry. The Social Committee for the occasion will be Brother and Sister James Dlugosh. Volunteers to help them include Annie Stryk, Grace Rohan, Agnes Popp and Doris Moczygemba. Entertainment will include Brother Charlie Kurtz on his accordian, and the Czech Choral Group, followed by games party. Split the Pot will also be held.

Bill and Stella Mares [center] wedding 45th celebrated their anniversary. A corsage and boutonniere were presented to them from our lodge. Mrs. Marcella Kleprlik [left] is anniversary chairman, and Willie Mae Cole [right] is the honorees' daughter.

Wednesday, March 4, 1987—VESTNIK/5 In reference to new business, the president asked if anyone wanted to participate in the Domino Tournaments. Brother Joe Stryk and Brother Emil Matula volunteered for Taroky. Volunteers for Straight and "42" included Viola and Charlie Kurtz, Joe Stryk and Emil Matula.

President Trilicek said he would set up a playoff game in the last week of February and contact those interested.

Persons celebrating February birthdays included Sisters Stella Mares, Mary Kostelnik and Brother Joe Stryk.

The attendance prizes were won by -- Sister Viola Kurtz, 1st; Sister Genevieve Schultz, 2nd; Brother Anthony Trilicek, 3rd; Sister Marcella Kleprlik , 4th. The pot was split by Brothers Anthony Trilicek and George Schultz.

With no further business the meeting was adjourned. The members enjoyed refreshments followed by a games party.

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi & Sokol Corpus Christi Dear Members: The February monthly meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. by President Frank eselka. secretary/Treasurer Mack Munson read the minutes of our previous meeting and the correspondence.

There are 3 members who are to receive 50 - year pins this year and it was decided that the 50 - year pins be mailed directly to the members, who are Sister Frances Hanus, Sister Emma Malek and Brother Adolph Sassin.

Financial Secretary Millie Elzner reported that Lodge No. 79 will probably go on direct billing in March and that no problems are anticipated in the change. One new member, Patrick Spradlin, was accepted.

Brother Eugene Hrncir, chairman of Finance Committee, gave the report on the review of salaries for officers. They recommend some changes, increase in some, others stay as before and that the salary for the financial secretary be prorated for the time served before going on direct billing. The office of financial secretary will not be needed and is to be called fraternal activities officer.

It was discussed what items will be needed to be donated for the booth at the Czech Heritage Festival on March 28th. All members are asked to please donate home - canned goods, all kinds of pastry, craft items, such as aprons, potholders, etc. Sister Gracie Kubala consented to coordinate for the booth and will work up a list of volunteer workers.

Appointed to serve on the Resolution Committee were Sister Judy Majek, Sister Millie Elzner and Brother Michael Majek.

For the District VII meeting, scheduled for April 26, registration will begin at 11 a.m. and there will be sandwiches, pastry and coffee available at 12 noon for those coming in early who wish to eat. The District VII meeting is tentatively set for 1 p.m.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned until the March monthly meeting which is Wednesday, March 11, at 7 p.m.

Following the Lodge No. 79 meeting, the Sokol Corpus Christi meeting was held starting at 8 p.m.

Among the topics discussed was the Lasagna meal sponsored by the gymnast parents, which will be held on

Sunday, April 12th. This is one of the fund - raisers the gymnasts are having to pay for expenses to the Slet in June.

Members of both organizations are asked to support them by coming on April 12 to eat the delicious Lasagna meal.

Come to our next meeting on Wednesday, March 11 and be an active member!

133, San Antonio 70th Anniversary

Lodge

San Antonio Lodge No. 133 will be celebrating their 70th anniversary on March 15th at the St. Margaret Mary's Activity Center located at 1314 Fair Avenue. Dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m. Members are asked to bring ONE vegetable dish and ONE pastry dish.

The rest of the meal will be furnished by our lodge. A short meeting will follow.

We will be honored to have our Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and family with us.

Invitations were sent to our District VII director, and District VII president. Also, as our guest, we will have District Vi Director Matt Vanek.

We hope to have them all with us.

Lodge 133 was organized in 1917 by a few determined people who believed that fraternal organization such as the SPJST was needed in our city. Details of the lodge will be published at a later date.

We want to encourage the members to attend this great event; this is your lodge, so come out and enjoy the afternoon and dinner with your sisters and brothers; by coming, you will show your fraternal friendship.

177 Commended On Continued Donations

The February meeting of Academy Lodge No. 177, was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Otis Beck.

All members present stood for the pledge to our flag.

Minutes from our last meeting were given by Treasurer Josie Tomastik in the absence of Dorothy Lisenbe.

Correspondence were letters from the Supreme Lodge commending Lodge 177 on our continued contribution to many charities and organizations.

All chairpersons' reports were excellent.

Three new members were accepted by unanimous show of hands. Those being accepted were Christopher Baca, Carol Sedlacek and Nancy McClaren, plus three transferees, Gene, Frances and Amy McBride; all of you are welcome!

Libbie Bartek sent a sympathy card and pot plant to the Reese Hughes family.

Board of Trustees' report concerned the roof has been repaired and discussed getting bids on the walls and stalls in the restrooms.

Youth Leader Ann Tomastik has re scheduled the Youth Club dance to a later date.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8 p.m.

Lodge 179, Warrenton To Meet Lodge No. 179 met for their regular meeting on February 12, 1987 at 7:30 p.m. in the Warrenton Guest Room.

President Bergmann opened the meeting by having the secretary read the minutes.

Financial Secretary gave his report followed by Treasurer Lee Leonhardt.

No other business was brought forward.

The Food Committee advised that for our next meeting, we will have cold cuts and members may bring a covered dish.

Meeting was adjourned, followed by a beef stew provided by Lee Leohardt, Elgen and Doris Eckermann.

Our next meeting will be March 12, 1987 at 7 p.m.

Chatter From Lodge 183, Mid-Cities Dear Members: Just a reminder that our next regular meeting will be on Monday, March 9th at the hall at 7 p.m.; bring a covered dish, come a little early and everyone will eat before the meeting.

Several new ideas were discussed at the last meeting to help get more members to attend our meetings and they will be tried to see which ones do the most good.

At the last meeting, Jerry Mikus won the $16 door prize; it pays to come to meetings.

There will be another dance on March 7th with "THE LAST CALL" (country/western) band playing for your dancing pleasure. Mark your calendar and bring your friends.

The dance held on Saturday, February 1st was well - attended and music of "AGAINST THE WIND" band kept everyone dancing all night; they even learned "the chicken or duck dance" whichever you want to call it and a large crowd was on the floor. It was the first time for some of these dancers and they really enjoyed it.

1 was just reading about that very unusual hospital for alcoholics in California. The nurses drank, the attendants drank, the doctors drank and the patients drank; they don't cure many alcoholics but, my, how time does fly!

Ten Percent Discount At Lodge No. 88, Houston Yes, you sure can receive a discount on you r automobile insurance premium by attending an AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) 55 Alive Mature Driving course sponsored by SPJST Lodge Pokrok No. 88.

Although the course title is a bit misleading the age limit is 50 years and over. The previous Vestnik article listed age as 55 years which was in error.

The course is conducted by an AARP instructor and consists of two each four - hour sessions.

The certificate issued by AARP upon completion of the course is good for a three - year period toward reductions of your insurance premium.

You might want to check with your automobile insurance agent prior to registering.

The first course held at Lodge No. 88 has just been completed February 19 and 20 and other classes are scheduled for March, April, May and June.

It's amazing how fast that these classes fill up. Classes are limited to thirty students and when an article about this course appeared first in Vestnik on February 4 so many persons called to register that classes for March, April and May filled to capacity.

It seems that, if you have a good product at the right price, it'll certainly go in a hurry.

Registration is now open for those wanting to attend the June 11 and 12 class. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the fee is $7. Location is SPJST Lodge No. 88.

You do not have to be a member of SPJST nor do you have to be a member of AARP, so bring your non lodge, non - AARP friends to share in this savings. But don't forget to call Homer to register.

Circle Of Lodge 92, Ft. Worth Ladies'

Dear Members and Friends: Our February 10th meeting was attended by 44 members with President Dona Hubenak presiding, with all officers present.

Secretary Clara Marchioni read the minutes from January meeting and Treasurer Evelyn Spacek gave her report and both were approved.

The secretary read a thank you card from Sunshine Easley for the greeting card from the Circle with all the

names. She always came to the meeting as long as she was able. Sheis now in Silver Creek Rest Home.

Sunshine Chairman Lillie McMillen reported Roberta Peters is still in the hospital but may be going home shortly and her husband is also in the hospital. She sent sympathy cards to Inez Krivanek (her uncle passed away) and to the Simmank family who lost a brother, Otto Simmank.

Florence Greer announced that Otto Hanus, curator of the SPJST Museum passed away. We were all sorry to hear that; he did such a great job with the museum and if some of you haven't seen it, you owe it to yourself to go see it.

There have been several grief stricken families since our meeting.

Richard Hubenak passed away and was the father of Martha Durham and brother o f Clara Cohen and Anna Langer, who belong to the Circle. His wife, Mary Hubenak, who preceded him in death, was an organizer of the Ladies' Circle. Joe Skrasek passed away in Ennis where he had recently moved from Fort Worth and was a brother of Frances Blake. Ida Mayer had a terrible tragedy in her family; she lost a son - in - law, Walter Overstreet, a member of Lodge No. 180; he died from smoke inhalation when their home burned and was a total loss. Our sympathy to all these families and may their loved ones rest in peace.

This being Valentine month, Betty Bellington told us when \ialentine started and is one of the oldest traditions which is still going strong. It was very interesting.

Dona Hubenak told us about going to Minnesota to her grandson's wedding and the wonderful time she had and the weather was like we had on our meeting day: cool and sunshiny.

Hostesses for March will be Clara Cohen, Estabelle Hubenak and Inez krivanek . Clara Cohen will donate the door prize.

There were three prizes for our meeting and were donated by Maggie Konecny, Clara Marchioni and Dona Hubenak and the winners were Frances Blake, Imogene Reaves and Clara Marchioni.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Bennie Bartek, Maggie Konecny, Clara Cohen, Rose Nieswiodomy, Imogene Reaves and Evelyn Zacek who all had birthdays in February.

Remember March 10th is our next meeting; bring your favorite covered dish and join us for fun and fellowship. Guests are always welcome.

I wish to express deepest sympathy to the Otto Hanus family on the loss of their husband, father, grandfather and great - grandfather in behalf of Seaton Choral Club. Our Choral Group lost a good member, too. When his health was better, he made every practice and was the reporter for the group for many years. May he rest in eternal peace.

Shady Oak Nursing Home resident Mrs. Albina Jasek, 93 years young, enjoyed listening to the Czech Singers from San Antonio; her two sons, Louis Jasek [left] and Frank Jasek [right] are members; Brother George Jasek is in the center.

San Antonio Czech CC Entertains Members of the Czech Choral Club entertained the residents at the Shady Oak Nursing Home in Moulton, Texas on February 21st.

The members assembled at Grumpy's Restaurant on 1H - 10, where reservations were made. The management reserved the special dining room where a delicious dinner was served and enjoyed by the members. They arrived at the nursing home at 1:30 p.m. where they visited with many of the residents, also with relatives who came to visit and to hear the members sing. It was a large crowd and we were happy to see so many present. Members continued to visit the residents, showing them their love and encouragement.

As members of our club, we always feel it is a privilege to entertain residents at various nursing homes.

When we sing the many Czech songs that most of the residents are acquainted with (the songs they learned to sing in their younger days), it can become very emotional, especially, when you see tears shed from so many; you know then, they do appreciate you and that gives a person a lot of satisfaction.

There are other Czech groups who entertain residents at nursing homes and we commend them for this; also we wish to encourage other groups to do the same because you will never regret the effort.

San Antonio singers are planning another trip to the S.P.J.S.T.Rest Home in Taylor, also the Blue Bonnet Nursing Home in Granger, Texas. We hope to make the trip some time this year.

We wish to thank the Shady Oak Nursing Home administrator and, especially, Mrs. Kresta for her kind words and the good kolache and coffee.

The Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce in Fayette County is hosting a Czech Genealogy Seminar at the SPJST Lodge No. 1 Hall on March 7, 1987 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The registration fee for the seminar will be $2.

Persons from Fayette and surrounding counties interested in Czech culture, heritage, language and genealogy are urged to attend. There will be performances by two groups of the Fayetteville Beseda dancers and the Fayetteville Czech singers. A Czech lunch will be sold at the hall.

A Note Of Appreciation Temple, Texas Dear Friends and Members: We're happy to report that Dorothy spent only a short time in the hospital recently and is recovering nicely after her surgery, modified radical mastectomy. There is every indication that the procedure was done in time.

The Word "Bohemian" Obsolete?

By: W.J. "Bill" Malina The word "Bohemian" was once used exclusively to describe the people who lived in the eastern part of what is now Czechoslovakia. It was also the name given to the people whose Slavic ancestry could be traced to Bohemia.

Prior to the formation of Czechoslovakia as an independent nation in 1918, Bohemia was a province of the Austrian - Hungarian Empire; so were Moravia and Slovakia. In their native language, the Slavic people of Bohemia called their province "Cechy" and described themselves as being "Cech." The German - speaking people called the province "Bohmen" and the people "Bohmisch." Since English is a Germanic language, it was natural that words derived from German would have originally been used to describe those Slavic people and their province.

-1-4e German word "Bohmen," as well as the English word "Bohemia," are derivatives of the French word "Boheme". The English word, "Bohemia", was first used around 1603, and "Bohemian" around 1861.

The usage of the Czech words "Cech" and "Cechy" go back to about 500 A.D., when Slavic people, under the leadership of a man named "Cech," migrated to that part of Europe now known as Bohemia, and called their new home "Cechy" in honor of their leader.

Bohemia, prior to the immigration of the Sla ys, was inhabited by Celtic tribes known as "Boii" (or Boians) who were driven out of their native land of Gaul, which today makes up p rance and the western part of Germany. The new land where these "Boians" settled became known, in Latin, as "Bojhemum" or "Bojohemum." About the same time, another group of Celtic tribes, called "Cotians," were also driven out of Gaul and settled in Moravia and Slovakia.

It is possible, and very probable, that the number of Bohemian immigrants into the United States prior to World War 1 is greatly understated. They came to the United States on German or Austrian passports and spoke very little English.

I heir limited knowledge of English, together with the American's limited knowledge of Czech, made it difficult for them to communicate with immigration authorities. It is possible that when the Bohemians told them that they came from "Cechy," the officials, not realizing that "Cechy" was Bohemia, assumed that they were from some part of Germany or Austria and classified them as Germans or Austrians.

In the United States, in the early 1900s, the word "bohemian" began to be used to describe the unconventional lifestyle of writers and artists who often lived in isolated colonies or communes. It was also used to describe vagabonds, wanderers and gypsies.

Bohemian immigrants, especially writers and artists, often banded together and remained separated from mainstream society, sometimes moving from place to place in an effort to establish, for themselves, a livelihood based upon their particular talents, their mode of dress with its rich colors and artistic embroidery which resembled the dress of gypsies.

The majority of the Bohemian immigrants were hard - working and and settled into permanent homes and jobs. They and their American - born second and third generations resented being known as gypsies or vagabonds, which, by then, was the connotation of the word "Bohemian." They started calling themselves "Czechs" after the word, "Cech", in their own Slavic language. The people in the new nation of Czechoslovakia were also becoming known as "Czechs," thus giving the Bohemians a new sense of pride by calling themselves "Czechs" and identifying themselves with this new nation.

The English word "Czech" came into use around 1841; prior to that time the words "Slavic" (first used around 1813) and "Slavonic" (first used around 1645) were used to identify the Czech people. (This explains why the founders of the SPJST chose the word 'Slavonic' instead of 'Czech' as part of the name for their new fraternity.) When Czechoslovakia became an independent nation, the words "Slavic" and "Slavonic" became too broad of terms to identify the people of this new country, and the English

word "Czech" came into use to identify them. The Moravians, with rare exceptions, also became known as "Czechs," however, the Slovaks retained the use of the word "Slovak" (first used around 1829) to identify themselves. The American Bohemians and Moravians also became known as "Czechs."

Every person of Czech ancestry has his own concept of the old country. To many, the word "Czechs" carries with it that concept of a modern, agricultural and industrial nation, forged in the 1920s and 1930s, and developed to its present state in the post World War 11 era. The words "Bohemian" and "Moravian" have a romantic implication, one of castles, knights, dukes, barons and the simple life of Slavic peasants, together with music, laughter and brightly - colored, highly - decorated costumes.

Descendants of Czech immigrants tend to have a concept of the old country as being in the state of development that existed when their ancestors left it.

Perhaps the descendants of those people who left the Czechoslovak

lands, prior to 1918, should be called "Bohemian," "Moravian" or "Slovak," depending upon the province from which their ancestors came, and those whose ancestors left Czechoslovakia after 1918 should be called "Czech." This, in itself may seem proper, however, the development and changing usage of a language does not always fall along logical lines, and such usage would only confuse the younger generations, particularly those who are not familiar with Czech history and heritage, for they would interpret these terms with contemporary meanings.

The researcher of Czech family heritage, as well as the student of American - Czech history, must be aware of the differing connotations of these words: Bohemian, Czech, Slavic and Slavonic.

No! The word "Bohemian" is not obsolete, it has only fallen into disuse and has been replaced by the more contemporary word "Czech."

n Memory Of Otto Hann; The loss of Brother Otto Hanu§, curator of the SPJST Museum, temple, Texas, is a sad loss, indeed.

Brother Harm§ will be missed greatly, both as a friend to so many and as a fine curator. His example will benefit President Howard Leshikar and Mrs. Thelma Bartosh, and those others who will continue his work.

Last September 9, 1986, Mr. Hanu§?

President Leshikar and Mrs. Bartosh visited us here at the Huber Farm in Austin, where a number of artifacts from the turn of the century were carefully chosen to represent north Bell County of that period. Articles from the J.H. Shaw Family of Troy, spanning the first half of this century, included a buggy, saddle, harness, farrier and smithy tools, with firearms and other collections to follow.

The energy of Brother Hanu§, his enthusiasm and knowledge of proper historical artifacts, were evident here in Austin, and his guidance will be sorely missed. We had a delightful and convivial meal at a nice restaurant, where conversation flowed easily, and Brother Hanu§ was wonderfully responsive in two languages.

We would like this to be a tribute to Brother Hanu§, whom we held in such high esteem, and to extend our respects to his family.

Lodge 66 Youth Leader Attended Workshop Dear Members and Readers, I want to take this opportunity to thank SYD Sue Meadows and SL President Howard Leshikar for the Youth Leaders' Retreat at Camp Lone Star in La Grange. The weekend was very educational, fun - filled and a chance to renew old friendships, and meet new friends.

By going to this retreat, I feel as though I can be a better youth leader. 1 cannot say that one part was better than another because all of the discussions, workshops and the speaker were great.

I would like to encourage all youth leaders and their assistants to go to the retreat next year because it can make your year as a leader much easier.

Thanks, again, and it is so nice to know that I have you two if I have any problems at all.

News From Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club Dear Vestnik Readers, The February 2, 1987 meeting of Lodge No. 47, Seaton Youth Club was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Michael Morris.

Angela Pechal led the Pledge of Allegiance and Club Motto.

The register was read. There were 24 members and 2 guests and 4 adults present. Guests introduced were Victoria Smith and Shannon Pechal.

The minutes were read and approved.

Celebrating birthdays this month are for Angela Pechal and David Koslovsky.

Door prizes were won this month,

by E.J. Pechal and Michelle Reese.

The fund - raising plan for this month is going to be a chili supper on February 27th. Each family was asked to bring a batch of cookies or a cake for the auction or cake walk. The supper to be served was set at 6 p.m for $2.50 per plate. Our supper consisted of chili, crackers, tea or coffee, a dessert. (Beans in chili cost 50 cents extra.)

The youth members enjoyed cake and punch served by Mrs. Judy Pechal after the meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 2:35 p.m.

Our next meeting was set for March 1st at 2 p.m.

The Youth Club meeting of Rowena Lodge No. 49 was held on February 14 at the Skating Palace in Ballinger, Texas, at 9 a.m. The group enjoyed skating. Shana Hite was also honored on her birthday. The seven members present were Tanya, Joe and John Urbanek, Shana Hite, Tammy and Wayne Strube and Paul Rollwitz; also five visitors enjoyed the party, they were Shanna Wells, Neil Werner, Doug and Dusty Hohnesee and Katherine Jeschke. Adults present were Linda Urbanek, Sandra Rollwitz and Angela Jeschke. After skating our group enjoyed ice cream and coke.

The next meeting will be held March 14 in the SPJST lodge hall in Rowena.

Dear Members, On February 14, we had our Youth Club meeting with 21 members present. There were 7 adults and one visitor, Amanda Neslony, present.

We made Valentine boxes, filled them with "goodies" and had them judged. Judges were Annie Hanus and Jeanette Smith. In the 6 - year - old age group first place was won by Alicia Neslony, 2nd -- Matthew Pavlicek, 3rd -- Sheri Kofnovec. In the age group 7 to 12: 1st place -- Candace Pavlicek, 2nd -- Chris Pavlicek, 3rd -- Kathy Warren. In age group 13 and up: 1st place -- Greg Nors, 2nd -- Donna Stanislav, 3rd -- Bill Warren. In the adult meeting we had a drawing for all of the boxes.

We made a $25 donation to the Libbie Parma Trust Fund in memory of Brother Otto Hanus. We will all miss Brother Otto very much.

For our March meeting, we are going to have a kite - flying contest.

Everyone be sure to bring your kite and let's have a fun - filled day. Our meeting will be on March 15 at 2 p.m. at the hall.

Our birthday cake for February was brought by Matthew Pavlicek. Door prize winners were Bill Warren, 1st place; Alicia Neslony, 2nd.

On February 10 the Youth Club went to the Shulman Five Theaters.

We had our choice of movies and everyone enjoyed the movie they saw.

Dr. George V. Pazdral was born in Fayetteville, 1-ayette County, Texas on September 29, 1905 to Dr. George A. and Julia Sladek Pazdral. The family moved to West, Texas, just north of Waco, when he was a small boy and he grew up I here, graduating from West High school in 1923.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 3o in \\ est .

He received his bachelor's degree from Baylor University in 1927, then taught biology and science in Orange, Texas for one year prior to beginning medical school. He graduated from the University of I eras Medical Branch in 1932. tte did his medical internship at Santa I•e Hospital in Temple, Texas and from there came to Somerville, Texas in July, 1933 to serve as the railroad physician and to begin his medical practice. He was a general practitioner in Somerville until his retirement in June, 1983.

On June 15, 1939, he married Lucille Brown and two children were born to this union, Julia Ann Pazdral Fuller and George Howard Pazdral.

During his long and dedicated professional life, he served the medical needs of his patients from Burleson and Washington counties and continued as the Santa Fe Railroad physician in Somerville. In 1969, he was elected vice president of the Texas Medical Association. He was an original associate in the formation of the Brenham Clinic Association.

He was a lifelong Presbyterian, having been baptized as an infant by his grandfather. He served the Somerville Presbyterian Church as an elder for more than 50 years. He was also chairman of the board emeritus of Citizens State Bank in Somerville and was city health officer in Somerville for many years.

After a lengthy illness, he passed away at Santa Fe Hospital in Temple, Texas on February 16, 1987, aged 81 years, 4 months and 18 days. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Olga and Pat. He is survived by his wife, Lucille Pazdral of Somerville; his daughter, Julia Fuller of Carrollton, Texas and her husband, Jerry; his son, Dr. George Pazdral of Austin and his wife, Lynn; his granddaughter, Suzanne Fuller of Carrollton; and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Thursday, February 19, '1987, from Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville with the Rev. Walter Lazenby, Jr. officiating. Interment followed in Oaklawn Cemetery in Somerville.

He was an insulator for J&J Insulation and Acoustics, Inc. He attended Carrol High School and was a member of the Most Precious Blood Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Majek; his parents, John and Kathryne Majek; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Majek, Sr.; his sister, Deborah McKinzey; two brothers, John Majek Ill and James Majek; father and mother - in - law, John and Audrey Hominick, all of Corpus Christi.

A rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, December 22 at the Clifford Jackson Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, December 23 at the Most Precious Blood Catholic Church with Father Randy Majek as celebrant, Monsignor William C. Kenlough, Father Hugh Clarke and Father James Harris assisting. Interment followed at Seaside Memorial Park. Clifford Jackson Funeral Home at Kostoryz Road, Corpus Christi, Texas, was in charge of arrangements.

Visitation was held from 8 a.m. to 12 noon on Thursday.

Brother Graves died on Tuesday, January 27, in a Houston hospital, after a brief illness. He was born on April 2, 1930 to William and Thallie Wenzel Graves in Lissie, Texas. On March 1, 1952, he married Polly Novosad in the Newgulf Methodist Church. A farmer by trade, he specialized in growing grain. He also liked to fish and hunt. He was a Methodist.

Survivors include his widow, Polly Graves of East Bernard; four sons, William DeWitt Graves and Jon Cam Graves, both of East Bernard, Rusty Graves of El Campo and Joey Graves of Freer, Texas; a daughter, Melinda Hoffman of East Bernard; five grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Eugene Dusek, Buck Matthew, Rickey Hough, Toby Hlavinka, Charles Kieler, Jr. and Steve Powers.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

She was a faithful member of the Caldwell Brethren Church, the Church Christian Sisters, and SPJST Lodge No. 186.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Kristof of Caldwell; two brothers - in law, four sisters - in - law, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Sister Swan was an active member of First United Methodist Church and held membership in Outstanding Women of America and Sweeny Chapter No. 873 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Of Interest Why Go To Russia After Chernoble?

June 1986, touring the Scandinavian cities of Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki with our Klub Kontinental group, visiting landmarks such as Tivoli Gardens, the Little Mermaid, a sculpture, the medieval Kronberg Castle, a setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet, the elegant Frederiksborg Castle and the Fredensborg Palace, the summer home of the Danish Royal Family, the outdoor markets abundant with fish, flowers, fruits, vegetables, furs and leather goods. The overnight cruise from Stockholm to Helsinki by Silja Line with a fabulous smorgasborg dinner abroad, while cruising the archipelago and the Midnight Sun shining all night. The days so far north are known as White Nights, even upon arrival in Leningrad with long daylight hours.

We arrived in Leningrad via a 7 hour train ride on a Russian train. To enter Russia we had to declare all U.S. currency or other foreign money, travel checks, gold jewelry, bibles, cameras and equipment. When departing Russia, you are checked if you are bringing out the declared same items or money or less, since you exchanged your dollars into rubles and made purchases.

Meanwhile as we crossed the Finnish/Russian border, we were two persons in each train compartment.

Upon boarding, the Russian officials shut our doors simultaneously and began their search of each person's luggage, wallets, coats, cameras, counted our money if corresponded with the declaration. These deadly serious uniformed officials were with intent to harrassment.

Our Intourist Russian guide, who spoke excellent English, was waiting for us at the Leningrad train station, also Lenin's statue. The bus was waiting for us to take us to our Hotel Priboltiyskaya, on the Baltic Sea. Our guide helped us check in. This is a huge, modern hotel, built in 1980 for the 1980 Olympics by a Swedish company using Swedish workers. It is used only for foreign visitors.

Intourist is in complete charge of all foreign travel within Russia. It operates hotels, restaurants, bus service and "Beriozkas," the hard currency stores that sell souvenirs, folk art, amber, lace embroidery, furs, caviar at New York prices. These stores are open only to foreigners.

They also accept credit cards and the clerks behind the counters still use the abacus to total up your purchases.

Feigners are given special treatment in the Soviet Union at train stations and airports. People are isolated from ordinary Russians and kept in separate waiting rooms. Their luggage is handled separately. There were no crowds, all was in silence, the terminal had no bright lights, as was true in the hotel lobbies. With these privileges the Soviets can't compare to the West, hotels are not Hyatt or Sheraton; the food is nothing to write home about. Their many ways of doing things are quite different from our ways. Remember, you are a guest!

To visit Leningrad, the former capitol of the Imperial Russian State, is to step into Czarist Russia.

Leningrad is one of the northermost cities in the world, much further north than most U.S. tourists realize. The city, across the Gulf of Finland from Helsinki, is further north than Janeau, Alaska. Leningrad is called "Venice of the North" built in Peter the Great era. It was built by French and Roman architects. The residents there are most civilized and cultured in the USSR. The city was rebuilt since WWII, because it was under German seige for 900 days, bombed and shelled almost flat. The city has many pre - 19th century buildings, St. Issac's Cathedral, Old Admiralty Building, Peter and Paul Fortress, has 620 bridges crossing 66 canals and rivers.

The most outstanding are the palaces that line along the Neva River, these include the blue and white Winter Palace, which houses the Hermitage Museum. This prize museum has 1,000 rooms, with 3 million art treasures. Its collection of statues, glassware, large crystal chandeliers, 8,000 paintings started in 1716 and continues to this day. It would take 3 years to see them all spending one minute at each. The main staircase of the Winter Palace envisions their great rulers.

During our last day in Leningrad, it was 24 hours of daylight the "White Nights" and each day thereafter; in June, the day gets shorter. The sun was setting around midnight and rising about 4 a.m. We had many short nights! This is a phenomenon I have always heard about. On our last evening we enjoyed a 2 - hour "Georgian Song and Dance Ensemble" performance. The dancing costumes were highly professional.

The arrival in Moscow was by air from Leningrad with our Intourist guide accompanying us. We arrived at our Hotel Kosmas, a monstrous facade overlooking the Monument of Space and Exploration and the park grounds of the Exhibition of Economic Achievements. We were taken to the Space Exhibit by our guide, nothing like our Johnson Center at NASA (Houston). The Kosmos was also built in 1980 and is like a grand central station with foreign tourists arriving and departing day and night; its lobby too was very dimly lit.

We visited the Kremlin on a misty cold day. The Red Square was uncrowded and with St. Basil's Cathedral dominating with its multi colored onion - shaped domes is Russia's and world's most timeless and symbolic structure, a symbol of timeless Russia. Red Square is a scene of televised funerals and military parades. Lenin's tomb, the most famous mausoleum, with its guards standing in the rain, was closed this day. Seeing Mao Tsetung mausoleum while in Peking Square (during my visit to China), I felt this one didn't matter.

Moscow was gray, gloomy, harsh and severe with its austere buildings

around Red Square and others that face the river. There are no bright lights in the city, except those that illuminate the numerous monuments and public buildings. It is a cheerless city, no pubs, cafes or Tivoli Gardens.

Moscow is strictly Russian, with its depressing Stalinist and post Stalinist architecture with historic churches and buildings of pre - communist era. The Moscow Metro, is sleek, polished with its impressive stations of marble, chandeliers and paintings. An incredible fast,_ steep escalator took us 7 stories underground to the platform; it cost 6 cents to ride.

In the evening, we were transferred to the Kremlin to the Palace of Congresses for an enchanting ballet and front row seating.

Departing Moscow by air, we had a long wait to get our passports and visas validated. It took forever, with stern looking, still wet - behind - the ears passport officials scrutinizing the simple documents as if they were coded messages being carried by secret agents.

When someone hears we recently returned from a vacation in Russia, the response is skeptical. Russia, is hardly a place to go for a first - class, relaxing fun - filled vacation. it is totally different from the West, a strange society. Travelers find a depressing, totalitarian system that limits your freedom and keeps close watch on you.

Russia is still a backward country, covers one - sixth of land surface of the world, with 200 dialects spoken. It is a huge, powerful country. At one end of the country it is daylight and other is night - time. it pours its resources into military hardware, not consumer comforts. People are intentionally isolated from western clothes, food and ideas. We had a precision program with few free moments to gaze and reflect on Russian life. If someone asks did I have a good time in Russia, I say, I wouldn't have missed it. Most people have no desire to return.

Our entry to Warsaw, Poland from Moscow was by Swiss Air. Our days were sightseeing the rebuilt city, because during WWII it was completely destroyed, and today it is rebuilt to its original splendor. The Royal Palace, the Lazienkowski Park with Chopin's monument, where we took a group photo, the quaint restaurants with sidewalk cafes, riding a horse drawn carriage (taxi) from center of town to our hotel door, and attending a beautiful Polish operetta "Straszny Dwor" with front seats.

The finale was an extravaganza of entire cast riding a horse drawn wagon on stage.

From Warsaw to Krakov, we had a motorcoach completely to ourselves driving through the rural farmlands with our jovial Polish driver.

Krakov is a university town with students prominent everywhere we went. This city was not destroyed during WWII, therefore, its centuries old buildings, as the 14th century Cloth Hall on the main square. The Cloth Hall is a mecca for shoppers, natives or tourists, as you can find in abundance the Polish handcrafts from embroidery to furs and leather goods.

The square was filled with natives with their shopping bags doing their morning daily shopping and musicians entertaining on the square.

We visited Jasno Gora Monastery, the shrine of the Black Madonna of Czectochowa, Poland's patron saint.

This icon is the most precious and venerated symbol of Poland. We were privileged to attend Mass with our

members Bishop John Morkovsky of Houston and Msgr. Robert Barzyk of Rosenberg, at the main altar of the Black Madonna.

En route we had a short visit to the Auschwitz concentration camp where the horrendous crimes were performed by the Nazis during WWII. This visit leaves you with thoughts, did it actually happen? Yes, it did!

The town of Wadovice, near the Czech border, hometown of our present Pope John II, a short stop was made to visit his home and church and buy souvenirs. We had a long wait at the Polish /Czech border, due to being a weekend, because the Poles were leaving the city or vacationing and other tourists, vans and transport trucks in transit. The waiting time was spent looking for drinks or ice cream in nearby stores and, unfortunately, two members of the group lingered too long, our motorcoach was ordered to pass through the border, but, they made the control on foot with the motorcoach driver's interception.

Our 10 days in Czechoslovakia were spent in numerous ways and destinations since we had several days on our own, to pursue individual interests looking for ancestors or relatives/friends. visiting From Moravia area, we journeyed individually to Prague to the Inter Continental Hotel for several days' stay of touring the city.

Prague is Eastern Europe's architectural treasure house of the past and present. The Vltava River unites the city, you cross back and forth several times a day the many bridges spanning it, as Prague can be seen walking.

The Charles Bridge is the focal point and a gallery of fine Baroque sculptures of saints blackened by time.

From the bridge you see spires of St. Vitus, Prague Castle on the hilltop and domes of great churches and the National Theater. Prague has many churches, the Baroque St. Nicholas, St. Thomas, Our Lady of Victory, home of Infant Jesus of Prague, dressed in bejeweled robes and gold crown. The church is on an off street, reached by a flight of stairs with huge trees surrounding the entrance.

Prague is full of scaffolds, much more than other years, as a mandate was set to restore the landmarks to its original splendor, after 40 years of neglect. Prague always did and does attract tourists, pilgrims, artists and nobility; also lately, two famous films Amadeus and Gentil have been filmed there in original settings.

Prague is inexhaustible, the shops are not stocked with consumer goods, as we are used to, but their famous crystal is displayed and can be purchased easily with dollars or Czech crowns. If your suitcase and arms can hold it, buy it. Many first timers usually are skeptical about a trip behind the Iron Countries and are approached with uneasiness, there is nothing to fear, the people are hospitable, generous and are curious about the West and surprised American - Czechs can speak the language, it's also true in Poland.

You leave Czechoslovakia and Poland with lasting memories, as I have for the 20th visit. Both nations have survived centuries of foreign rule, maintaining cultural heritage and preserving the language. Both are a mosaic of nationalities. As they say in Czech "na shledanou" which does not mean "good - bye" but "see you again," which will be June 25 to July 3, 1987.

The first bath tub that came out was of tin and painted white. After several hot water baths, the paint would sluff off, leaving the tin exposed. Women of the neigborhood came over to exclaim and look over this new fangled bath tub. It was then that the No. 3 wash tub took to the wash house and it then became the fashion to bathe more than just on Saturday instead of just washing up in a wash basin. Finally, the big enameled beauty on four legs became a permanent fixture and luxury in our homes until it too, took the back seat to the streamlined fixtures we enjoy today.

One could go on and on reminescing! After the First World War, things progressed very rapidly.

New inventions competed with each other for the buyer's pocketbook, and it is still going on at a fast clip. Only today, one can purchase on credit or time payment, whereas, when Henry Ford put out his Model "T," it was "cash" or do without with our elders.

The skilled laborer brought home a paycheck of $15 to $20 a week, which was considered bankers' wages and from this capital these hardy Czech and Moravian folks laid by the foundations of their later fortunes and earned the excellent credit ratings they enjoyed among the business people of Texas. They saved not only money, they saved food which was a sin to throw out, they saved clothing, which was handed down, made over, or given to someone to finish wearing until it was threadbare. Patched clothes were considered honorable. Styles were unknown then, for when a woman washed her hair with homemade soap until it shone to pile up in a luxurious bun on top of her head, scrubbed her face until it shone, carried herself erect, she was just as beautiful and in style as her counterpart today with all the folderol dame fashion dictates to

have that "groomed look."

This thriftiness and conservative management of our fathers made our SPJST what it is today, and with today's headlines telling of heavy unemployment and some want in our America, it just might be a good idea to adopt some of our elders' frugality to see us over this stress.

Before I close this lengthy letter to you today, may I wish all of you having birthdays in February a "Happy Birthday" and many returns of the day. You have been born in the same month with our two biggest men, Washington, the father of our Country and the emancipator Abe Lincoln.

Member National Award Winner SPJST

The United States Achievement Academy announced today that Sheryl Macha has been named a United States National Award winner in Leadership Service.

This award is a prestigious honor very few students can ever hope to attain. In fact, the Academy recognizes less than 10 percent of all American high school students.

Sheryl Macha, who attends Needville High School was nominated for this Award National by "Unknown" at the school.

Sheryl Macha's name will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, published nationally.

"Recognizing and supporting our youth is more important than ever before in America's history. Certainly United States Achievement Academy Award winners should be congratulated and appreciated for their dedication to excellence and achievement," said Dr. George Stevens, Executive director of the USAA. The Academy selects USAA winners upon the exclusive recommendation of teachers, coaches, counselors or other school sponsors and upon the Standards of Selection set forth by the Academy. The criteria for selection are a student's academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership, qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, citizenship, attitude and cooperative spirit, dependability, and recommendation from a teacher or director.

Sheryl is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Macha; her grandparents are Mrs. Selma Bednarek and the late Mr. Theodore Bednarek of Needville, also the late Mr. and Mrs. Anton Macha of Wallis.

V kvetnu 1986, byla jsem pozvdna sv/m bratrancem Jaroslavem Elznerem, 1301 Prince, Corpus Christi, Texas do Spojen/ch state americk/ch, kde jsem mela b/t 20 drill o sve dovolene.

Tato cesta byla pro mne velkou uddlosti, neb dosud nikdy jsem tak daleko od domova nebyla. I pro moji rodinu, pfdtele i spolupracovniky to byla velkd senzace, le jedu al do Texasu.

Rodiee meho bratrance Jaroslava pochazeli z teskoslovenska a to z Moray skeho Slovdcka z obce Vetefov u Kyjova. Mora yske Slovdcko je velmi proslaveno sv/mi nddhern/mi puvodnimi kroji, ktere se oblekaji pfi riizn/ch slavnostnich pfilelitostech, taktel je tento kraj proslaven v/born/m vinem pestovan/m tam na rozsdhljr ch vinicich. Rodiee bratrance Jaroslava ode gli asi v roce 1922 (jako ostatne mnoho jinjr ch Cechil) do Ameriky, kde se trvale usadili a zalolili tam rodinu. Mitj bratranec Jaroslav se u2 narodil v Americe, ro yal tak i jeho sestra Anieka a dal gi sourozenci. Velmi mi vyhovovalo, e v rodine bratrance mluvili i eesk/, take jseitrxse s nimi

mohla velmi dobfe domluvit a nepfipadalo mi ani, le jsem v cizine a citila jsem se jako doma.

Na cestu do Texasu jsem se velice tegila a zdroven jsem byla i zvedavd, jak to tam vypadd. Cesta letadlem z Ceskoslovenska do Londjrna a ddle do Washingtonu s mezipfistdnim v Houstonu - byla pro mne velmi pfijemn/m a velk/rn zdlitkem. Za den a pul jsem byla koneene na miste v Corpus Christi. Kdy2 jsme se pfiblilovali ve veCernich hodindch k hlavnimu mestu Texasu - Houstonu byla jsem uchvdcena nevgednim obrazem, kter/ se mi pohledem z letadla naskytl. Mesto bylo ozdieno mnoha neony a vie vypadalo jako v pohadce.

Na v Corpus Christi me jil oeekdval bratranec Jaroslav s rodinami. Shleddni bylo velmi srdeene a mile, al me to dojalo. Potom me jejich autem odvezli z leti gte' do jejich bytu v Corpus Christi, kter/ se mi stal nyni doeasn/m domovem. Tam bylo pfipraveno bohate poho gteni a viichni se mi velmi venovali. Ndlada byla v/bornd, mëli jsme si toho tolik co fici, 2e to nebralo konce. Pfestole jsem byla unavena dlouho cestou a pfekvapena hork/m tamnim podnebim - (zatim co v Ceskoslovensku pfi mem odjezdu bylo mime jarni poeasi) - zapojen/ "ERKOIDISHEN" v jejich byte, vytvofil pfijemn/ chladek, take jsem se brzy aklimatizovala a citila se pozdeji v/borne. maj bratranec Jaroslav ptipravil pro milj pobyt u nich, bohat/ program, take kald/ den byl doslova nabit na.vgtevami u daliich pfibuzn/ch, ktefi se viichni velmi mile a srdee'ne ke me chovali, pohostili me a snaiili se plipravit mi pfijemne prostfedi v jejich rodinnem kruhu. Moc na ne s vdeenosti vzpomindm. Podnikali jsme autem bratrancem ruzne v/lety i do okoli, sezndmili me s pametihodnotmi jejich mesta, podivala jsem se i k mofi, ktere me velmi okouzlilo, zavedli me do velk/ch obchodnich domft, pin/ch vieho mo2neho zbo2i aloCi pfechdzely a umolnili me zhlednout v Houstonu misto, odkud se vystfeluji rakety, a tak dojmy byly ze vieho velke a nezapomenutelne. Tamni strava byla v/bornd a moc mi chutnala. Vafi se tam a ji hodne zeleniny, ryb, ovoce a jind dobrd jidla.

Co me velmi zaujalo v rodine bratrance Jaroslava i jeho pfibuzenstva byl vfel/ vztah k vlasti jejich rodieCt a pfedkil k Ceskoslovensku. Pravidelne se schdzeji a bavi se vzpominkami a zpevem naiich krasn/ch, eesk/ch, lidov/ch pisni, ktere se nautili od sv/ch rodiCü nebo krajaml. Je milo v cizine zaslechnout nage krasne, Ceske pisne a obdivuji tyto rodiny, ktere vale stale silne pouto ke stare vlasti sv/ch pfedku a hluboke pokofena rodova tradice udrlovand z pokoleni na pokoleni.
