BROTHERHOOD WEEK February 22 - 28, 1987 0**

In this week's edition, all dates and locations of district meetings are posted in the Bulletin Board for your reference. We suggest every member take interest and endeavor to attend, also learn what the SPJST Fraternal -Insurance Society is all about because you will be surprised what various local lodges do for their members of all ages. Can the respective district officers count on your interest and participation? ***

For quite a number of years, your editor had wondered about certain people who travel to Czechoslovakia and other countries in Europe year after year and, in certain cases, criticize the country they had visited including the customs and government, and then go, again. Why? That question was answered, at one time in large part, by a very good acquaintance who is now deceased.

This person had made a number of trips to Czechoslovakia with groups of 50 or so individuals, so yours truly simply asked the reason.

Here is the answer -- for-every 14 persons procured for the trip, this person had a 15th fare or FREE trip, so with 50 people, 3 in the family could go FREE, evidently an arrangement with the travel agency and/or airlines., This acquaintance made no apologies about it, either. One thing I appreciated about this certain individual was that there were never any words of criticism upon returning to our USA; simply stated by this individual was: "I go because it costs me nothing to go." ***

This above reminds a person about the expression of a pessimist and an optimist -- give them each a glass filled to one - half with water; the pessimist will say: "It is already half - empty," and the optimist will say, "It is still half full." The same applies to these trips anywhere, even in our United States -- you can find good and beauty if you look for it, however, you can find bad and ugly if that is what you go looking for. Personally, this editor prefers to try to. find the better things in life; maybe -- too much of an optimist. Our parents, in the Sefcik household, never let us call people names. Before World War II this editor never found any reason to call Germans -- "Krauts", Italians -"Dagos" and Japanese -- "Slant Eyed Nips." Yet, that was used rather freely, they are our "friends" -remember Vietnam, they were "Gooks." Can we ever get off that name - calling habit? Are we so perfect? Remember, others are also human individuals!

This is written for the benefit of our youth leaders and our youth. Youth leaders, please advise your youth club members to be sure to send their youth club project answers - to Supreme Lodge, attention SYD Sue Meadows, Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503 and NOT to Box 85, West, Texas because this delays the youth mail (project matters) that have to be forwarded to Sister Meadows.

That's good for home buyers because mortgages below that ceiling carry interest rates about three - eighths of a percentage point lower than those above the limit.

Conventional 30 - year, fixed - rate mortgages now carry an interest rate of about 9.3 percent. *** Bicycle safety tips that everyone must give while riding a bike in traffic.

When you are the driver you must follow rules of the road, give signals, obey signs and lights, yield the right of way and keep a sharp lookout for danger, just as car drivers do. To be a lawful and safe bicyclist the laws listed below should be learned and obeyed.

Obey all traffic signs and signals.

Warn other traffic when stopping or turning by giving the required hand signals. The signal for a left turn is the left arm extended straight out from the body, parallel to the ground. The signal for a right turn is the left arm extended out with the forearm and hand pointing up. To slow or stop, the signal is the left arm extended out and down from the body at a 45 degree angle.

Always ride as near to the right side of the road as possible and in the same direction as motor vehicles.

Be careful when passing parked vehicles or vehicles traveling in the same direction.

Not more than two bicycles may be driven side by side. It is safer to ride single file.

Do not ride double except on bicycles built for two persons.

Ride only upon the bicycle's regular seat.

Do not hitch to motor vehicles or streetcars.

Do not carry packages that will prevent keeping at least one hand on handlebars.

Always be alert for traffic from all directions.

Before leaving a driveway or alley, or when crossing a street or road, stop, look both ways and wait for motor vehicles and pedestrians to pass.

Let pedestrians go first at street crossings and on sidewalks.

-Get off the street or road and stop when you hear the sirens of emergency vehicles.

Do not race with others on a public street or road. bo not play riding games in the street or roadway.

Always keep your bicycle in good condition. Every bicycle should have brakes that will skid the braked wheels On dry, level, clean pavement. When used at night, the bicycle must have a white light on the front which can be seen at least 500 feet, and a red reflector visible for 300 feet.

From The Secretary Treasurer's Office Excerpts From Minutes Of The First Regular Quarterly Meeting Of The Supreme Lodge SPJST Held January 5-7, 1987 The meeting was called to order at 9 a.m. with all Supreme Lodge members present: Howard B. Leshikar, Pres.

Vanek - VI Thelma Hrncir - VII Election of Chairman/Vice Chairman of Board - The first order of business was election of Chairman of the Board. Director Sid Pokladnik was nominated and elected by acclamation. Director Stanley Broz was nominated for Vice Chairman of the Board, but declined to accept the nomination. Director Matt Vanek was nominated. He accepted and was elected by acclamation.

New Committees were designated as follows 1. Products Committee --Bernard M. Gebala, Chairman Jerry Prochazka Matt Vanek Sid Pokladnik 2. Fraternal Activities Committee --Howard Leshikar, Chairman Willie E. Kohutek Stanley Broz Jerry Mikulas 3. Financial Planning Committee --Leonard Mikeska, Chairman Thelma Hrncir Ben Trcalek Sidney Kacir Audit - Audit assignments were made and recess was taken at 9:30 a.m. to allow time for completion of the audit.

The meeting was convened at 1:20 p.m. and the agenda was set and SL members were given time to make brief comments. Recess was taken at 2 p.m. to allow committees to meet and formulate recommendations.

The meeting was called to order at 8:30 a.m. on January 6, 1987.

Home Office employee, Doris Tyroch, was present in the Board Room and was honored for 20 years of service to the SPJST in the Home Office. She was presented with a corsage and plaque.

The previous evening, the members of the Supreme Lodge surprised Chairman of the Board Sid Pokladnik with a dinner party at the Stagecoach Inn in Salado where he was honored for 20 years of service to the SPJST on the Board of Directors.

Minutes - The minutes of the October 6 - 8, 1986 Supreme Lodge meeting were considered and approved.

Reports - The Supreme Lodge officers' reports were acknowledged on motion made and carried. The reports will be placed of record in Exhibits Volume VI. OLD BUSINESS: Incentive Trip - It was agreed that if any of the sales winners decline the trip, their place will be passed on to the next sales person in line.

SPJST Lodge No. 178, Longview - Report was made on plans to accept a deed on the lodge property and a bill of sale on personal property items covered under the mortgage. The principal balance of each loan was reported.

After a review of the procedure the following was decided on motion duly adopted.

1. To proceed with the plan to have the lodge deed, the real estate to the Society with a bill of sale for covered personal property items.

2. To authorize the District III director and the SL officers to set sale price of real estate and property and choose method of disposal.

NEW BUSINESS: Premium Refund Scale - The following scale was adopted effective January 1, 1987: Three percent of the current certificate year mid - terminal reserve on permanent plans only, less S0.35 per premium - paying certificate less $1.60 per paid - up certificate. If the resulting refund is not at least $2.25, then no refund is to be paid.

The Universal Life certificates are excluded. The motion was made, seconded and it carried.

State Youth Director - SYD Sue Meadows reviewed her written report.

Proposals for changes in the Youth Department were reviewed, discussed and agreed upon.

Fraternalist of the Year Award - It was decided to initiate a Fraternalist of the Year award and that a letter be sent to each lodge encouraging the lodge to select a Fraternalist of the Year for the local lodge and to send a nomination of that individual to the Supreme Lodge for selection of the State Fraternalist of the Year. The local lodge nominee for the state award must be a local lodge winner.

Senior Citizens - Suggestion was heard from the Fraternal Activities Committee to provide a service of matching of senior citizen member homeowners with members not owning homes who desire to share their homes for mutual assistance. It was agreed to look into this service and prepare the plans.

Lodge Revitalization - The following proposal was presented by the Fraternal Activities Committee: 1. Select method of revitalization.

2. Each district director will select an inactive lodge in his /her district.

3. All departments at the Home Office will concentrate on that lodge.

4. The goal is to have all 7 lodges contacted by July 1st.

It was decided to proceed with the plans on motion duly passed.

Fraternal Fest - After discussion, the October 1986 meeting action on the Fraternal Fest was rescinded since a sponsor of the Fraternal Fest could not be found.

Conflict of Interest - Opportunity was given for each Supreme Lodge member to report conflict of interest, if any. None of the members of the Supreme Lodge reported any conflict of interest.

Insurance Plans - it was agreed to discontinue marketing of all 1958 CSO Cash Value products as soon as the new Ordinary Life certificate is ready for marketing.

There was Incentive Trip discussion of a sales incentive trip for sales contest winners. It was decided to proceed with plans for a trip in 1988 for the top 30 sales representatives.

The destination tentatively selected is Las Vegas.

Czech Music - The sum of $100 was authorized to transcribe a portion of the Polka Music Workshop for future use.

Editor Sefcik - Editor Rudy Sefcik arrived to visit the remainder of the afternoon session. He discussed the Vestnik and complimented the Supreme Lodge on their cohesive management of the Society. There was a discussion about various matters pertaining to the Society and various ideas were shared by Editor Sefcik and other board members.

Delinquent Loans Recommendations on delinquent loans were considered and approved on motion duly passed.

Minutes of Supreme Lodge Officers' Meetings - The minutes of 14 meetings held concerning investments were approved.

Third Quarter Investments - The investments as listed in the Secretary's - Treasurer's report were ratified on motion adopted.

SPJST Mortgage Rates - The mortgage rates were set as follows: Residential/farm mortgages, 8 3/4 percent for 1 - 10 years; 9 1/4 percent for 11 - 15 years, 9 1/2 for 16 - 20 years.

Commercial mortgages, 9 3/4 percent for 1 - 10 years, and 10 1/4 percent for 11 - 15 years.

Mortgage Loan Requirements/Policy The rules and requirements and the mortgage loan policy was left the and unchanged program refinancing/modification now in force was extended.

Directors and Officers Liability Report was made that the Society has not been successful in finding a company that would write directors' and officers' liability coverage because most companies had withdrawn from the market.

Resolution Authorizing Indemnification - A resolution indemnification for authorizing Supreme Lodge members and persons serving on SPJST committees was brought up for consideration.

Discussion followed. A motion duly passed, approved the resolution which will be placed of record in Exhibit Volume VI. TFC AD HOC Committee - Legal Advisor Kacir was approved as a member of the AD HOC Committee charged with working out certain legislation with the State Board of Insurance.

Local Lodge Officers Orientation Consideration was given to schedule an orientation of local SPJST lodge officers which would also be open to other interested members. The following suggestions were heard: 1. That the affair be set up in a different format from the workshops held in previous years.

2. Location to be Temple or a central location and a facility such as the Cultural Activities Center.

3. Reimburse mileage for one automobile per lodge - use a pre registration to determine attendance.

4. Use the orientation as a means of communicating information about needs, problems, strengths and goals of the Society.

5. The month of March was suggested.

The SL officers were authorized to proceed with plans for the orientation and Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska was to coordinate the plans.

Employees Salaries - Employees salary adjustments came up for consideration. Recommendations were heard from the Supreme Lodge officers and the adjustments were approved with amendments.

Universal Life Rate - The Universal Life rate was discussed and set at 9 percent for the period from February 1, 1987 through July 31, 1987.

State Insurance Law Changes - A report was heard on the work and progress of the AD HOC Committee :.barged with solving some legislative problems affecting all fraternal benefit societies in Texas.

A motion was adopted to endorse the legislative proposal prepared by the AD HOC Committee and as it may be modified with the approval of Legal Advisor Kacir, the SPJST AD HOC Committee member.

Investment Policy - The Society's investment policy was amended to increase the amount that can be invested in bonds and government guaranteed securities "not to exceed 35 percent of assets at time of purchase."

It was agreed to amend the section on "Other Accounts" to read: "Investment in insured brokerage firm

Exchanges/Rollovers/Commission It was decided to pay a 5 percent commission on a rollover one time only. If a policy is surrendered and new coverage is purchased within a reasonable period of time, this will be considered a rollover and subject to the 5 percent commission limitation of 5 percent.

Annuity Rate - The interest rate for the accumulation period on annuities was set at 8 percent annualized for the period from February 1, 1987 through April 30, 1987.

Directors' Audit - The directors' audit report was made. Information was requested on several items. Report was heard that the books were found to be in order. The securities in the safety box were audited and accounted for.

Theme Contest - The theme entry selected was "Preserving the Past Protecting Your Future." The winning entry was submitted by Ron Frnka of Lancaster, Texas.

The next Supreme Lodge meeting was set to begin on April 6 at 1:30 p.m.

There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 3:15 p.m.

TO SPJST IRA OWNERS A change in the Law requires that IRA Contributions must be identified as to the year for which a Deposit is to be applied.

This is most important during the period, January 1 through April 15, 1987 when IRA Contributions can be applied to the previous year (1986), or the current year (1987).

This change to properly report IRA Contributions is mandated

by IRS to verify the transaction through IRS Form 5498 filed by SPJST and the Individual Income Tax Form 1040 Filing Return.

Lodge 15, Buckholts Sets Meeting Date Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting was called to order by President Joe Zajicek.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by everyone.

Secretary Charlie Svetlik read the minutes of the January meeting which were approved as read.

There was some discussion about what we were going to do for our 50 year pin members.

We had a • fun - day last Sunday while playing dominoes and also what a delicious meal we had! We had such good food and good fellowship. I think everyone enjoyed it very much.

Our next meeting will be on March 11th.

28, East Bernard Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: Like the February meeting, the first Sunday in March is the 1st. Lodge Karel Jonas will convene its monthly meeting at 2 p.m. The meeting, again, will be, on a trial basis, in the small office downstairs in the hall building at 106 Leveridge. The "Order of Business" will be standard. On the agenda, besides the usual items, will be the up and coming District VI spring meeting, in Victoria, on April 5th.

Since the District VI meeting will be held on our regular meeting date, our April monthly meeting will be held on the 12th.

The gathering, for the luncheon, after the meeting, will be upstairs in the hall. Since, AGAIN, the lodge WILL NOT take part, due to reasons that CANNOT be expressed here, it will be a "Catch as Catch Can" affair.

Those wishing to bring and contribute something to the luncheon, MAY DO SO. It is not mandatory or requested.

All, who wish to stay, whether they bring something or not, are invited.

One thing, for sure, there will be some coffee.

The February meeting was on the 1st. It was a great honor and privilege to have, as our guests, SL Vice President Brother B. Gebala and District VI Director Brother Matt Vanek who accepted this writer's longstanding invitation. We thank them for attending. They both gave us reports on what is happening within our Society and asked, those present, to ask questions on any subject. Those who raised the most questions, in the last meeting, were either not asking any or were not present. All reports, given, were accepted. A new member was voted in. Now, after many years of helping the lodge, off and on, on special occasions, Helen Kelner became a member. Welcome, Sister Helen.

The luncheon was convened upstairs in the hall. Our guests joined in the fellowship. This writer was glad that

some of the sisters were kind enough to bring something to make the luncheon a success. Thanks to Sisters Janik, Kotis, Srubar, Brdecka, Luquette, Nezval and Brother A.J. "Tony" Kelner for the luncheon did come out well since the lodge did not take part.

Sister Luquette sent something even though she is still unable to attend because of her hip.

35, Elk February Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: Our February 8th meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flag Bearers Jana Breitkreutz and Jessica Tierce.

Secretary Rosemary read the minutes of the January meeting which were approved. She also gave the treasurer's report.

Visitors were Jeff Stanford and Tim Rasco. We welcome you, and come back, again!

We have two members to receive 50 year pins, namely, Edwin Holub and Lillian Smith.

Our new member is Summer Marie Smith.

Youth Leader Louise Burney reported that the youth made Valentines. They were made out of cake or cookie dough; they were beautiful. Those who won were in ages 13 and over: First -- Dawn Pavelka Second -- Melissa Burney Third -- Tracy Breitkreutz Winners in ages 10 to 12: First -- Charlie Easter Second -- Stephanie Holloway Third -- Timmy Pavelka Also winners in ages 9 and under: First -- Jessica Tierce Second -- Nathan Tierce Third -- Jana Breitkreutz The judges were Mary Wasek, Lucy Holub and Gloria Pavelka.

After the meeting the youth club took the cookie to the Mart Rest Home.

On March 1st the youth will have a skating party and pizza will be furnished by the youth club. Youth Leaders' Retreat will be held February 20th - 21st.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Coty McCauley, Louise Beran, Melissa Burney and Ernest Banik.

Congratulations to Johnny Holub, our new sales representative for Lodge 35.

Our next meeting will be held March 8 at 3 p.m. Bring sandwiches or something for lunch because the lodge isn't buying the meat anymore.

Large Donations Approved By Lodge 40 The officers and members of El. Campo - Hillje SPJST Lodge No. 40 met for regular monthly meeting on Monday, February 16, 1987.

First Vice President Bennie Reck led the members and guests in the Pledge of Allegiance. A minute of silence was observed in memory of Sister Albina Rod and all other departed members.

Our members have again committed themselves to helping their fellow people. They voted to make the following contributions: $150 -- El Campo Adult Retarded Citizens Workshops $350 -- Wharton County Deputy Sheriff's Reserves $180 -- Sponsorship of a girl to American Legion Auxiliary's Girl State Program $2,000 -- El Campo ISD and Louise 1SD for ten scholarships of $200 each to be awarded to 1987 graduating seniors.

66 February Meeting

Our regular monthly meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m. February 15th. President Pauling asked our Flag Bearers Bill Warren and Larry Yates to present them, while Michael Warren led everyone in the pledge.

Everyone remained standing for a moment of silence in honor of our dear departed Brother Otto Hanus. He will surely be missed by everyone.

All officers were present and minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Correspondence was read concerning all the Tournaments coming up including some changes in the domino rules. Other correspondence concerned the special Sesquicentennial film to be aired; nominations for a Fraternalist of the Year Award and a letter stating everything Linden Hall would be responsible for during the Straight Domino Tournament to be held at our lodge.

We have two members who will be receiving their 50 - year pins. This will take place in the near future.

President Pauling thanked several individuals for their help and work they have done at the hall. He also thanked the ladies of the Entertainment Committee for their diligence.

Minutes of the February 4 Board meeting were read. A Cleanup Day will be scheduled in April.

The Libbie Parma Trust Fund Committee was organized. The new treasurer is Sister Mary Alice Langlotz. Several memorial donations were given in memory of Brother Otto Hanus. Also the usual $50 check was given from the lodge.

Youth Leader Gladys Yates reported that there were 21 youth members present, one visitor and 7 adults. In March the youth will have a kite flying contest. The youth club also gave a $25 donation to the Libbie Parma Trust Fund in memory of Brother Otto Hanus.

The youth made and filled Valentine boxes for a contest. The following in ages 0 - 6 won: 1st - Alicia Neslony, 2nd - Matthew Pavlicek, 3rd - Sherrie Kofnovec. In ages 7 - 12: 1st - Candace Pavlicek, 2nd - Chris Pavlicek, 3rd Katherine Warren.

Teen winners were: 1st - Greg Nors, 2nd - Donna Stanislav, 3rd - Bill Warren.

Sister Leona Nors reported that at the March meeting, the Entertainment Committee would serve cold cuts and the ladies are asked to bring desserts.

She also read a thank you note from the Otto Hanus family for serving the luncheon after Brother Otto's funeral services.

Sister Smith read a thank you from the Texas Department of Human Resources for a recent donation our lodge made. More donations will be given at next month's meeting.

Cheer Committee Gloria Locke reported sending get well cards to Mrs. John Simcik, Otto Hanus, Betty Urbanovsky and -Kaylee Pruitt; sympathy card was sent to Rosemary Spence.

New members accepted this month were Amy De Nuzzio and Alan De Nuzzio, plus a conversion policy on Donna Stanislay.

Sister Engelke read the Resolution of Sympathy for our departed Brother Otto Hanus. Brother H anus always made all the picture frames for our lodge, and at this time, President Pauling showed everyone present the last piece of work that was done.

President Pauling reported that anyone wanting to enter the Taroky Tournament had to let Bonnie Pruitt know now. She had to mail in a list of players' names to the Supreme Lodge this week (February 15 - 20).

Brother Pauling said the actual playing of Straight Dominoes at our lodge to determine the winners began February 17th. There will be a first, second and third place prize given.

On March 3rd the "42" Tournament at our lodge will begin.

Sister Pruitt spoke about the Fraternalist of the Year Award and mentioned that everyone should be thinking of someone from our lodge to nominate for this award.

If there is anyone in our lodge who can speak and write Czech and would like to assume the position of Czech reporter for our lodge, please attend our next meeting and let us know.

Sister Engelke reported on the class for insurance sales representatives held at our lodge recently. She made the comment, "that due to the State Board having so many new rules, it will be a lot tougher to sell insurance."

President Pauling stated that as of this meeting, there would be a change of policy in reference to the flag bearers. They would also retire our flags before the conclusion of each meeting; this was then taken care of.

Our door prize winner was Mrs. Albert Jaska.

Our youth leader then drew names for the Valentine boxes the youth had made. Dear Brothers and Sisters: The Rudy Kurtz dance held on Saturday, February 7th was attended by a large crowd. It has been a while since this band has played and everyone had an enjoyable evening.

The February monthly meeting was well attended. Sister Laura Mabry will serve as youth leader during 1987.

It was reported that Brother Jimmy Pokluda is still in Westbury Hospital.

Sister Clara Jecmenek reported that Brother Tom Jecmenek is feeling better. Brother Joe Knapick is doing better and was able to attend the meeting. It was great to see Brother Knapick. We wish all of our sick members a speedy recovery.

Don't forget the District V spring meeting to be held at Lodge 88 on Sunday, March 8th. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. A baked chicken dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Adult plates will be available for $4 and mini - plates will be $2.50. The Birthday Club Sisters will appreciate pastry donations. The Lodge 88 Choral Club and Concert Orchestra will perform from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and the meeting will convene at 1:30 p.m. The District V officers will be elected at this meeting. Also, the youth will present a program. Door prizes will be awarded and refreshments will be served following the meeting. All members are urged to attend this important meeting. District V President Clara Broz has planned an enjoyable day for everyone.

Our deepest sympathy is extended to Sister Naomi Spencer and Brother Tim Kostom whose brother, Emmanuel Kostom, passed away on Wednesday, February 4th.

The upcoming dances include: Friday, February 27th -- Dance sponsored by the Ladies' Oriental Shrine Drummett Unit to the music of the Texas Brew. Donations are $5 per person. The kitchen will be open and sliced barbecue beef sandwiches will be available.

Saturday, February 28th -- Manny Green; admission is $17 per couple and the dress code will be observed.

92, Ft. Worth Meeting & Games Tournament

Dear Members and Friends: If any of you are interested in representing Lodge No. 92 in the Games Tournament to be held in Temple soon, please attend the March meeting; after the meeting and supper, games will begin to determine the champions who will subsequently go to the SL finals to attempt to become State Champions, so let's see you Sunday afternoon, March 8th and give them a fight for the title!

Another purpose of this short extra letter is to inform you, who do not know already, that we lost one of our most - revered members in February, Brother Richard Hubenak. In the youth of our lodge he was a most diligent worker. For the more recent decade or so he served as guide and registrar at all our meetings, seldom missing until lately as he became more seriously ill. We will all miss him and fondly remember a truly dedicated.

139 Has Guests

At its meeting on February 11 Danbury Lodge 139 was honored by the presence of Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and District V Director Jerry Prochazka, both of whom addressed the members present.

Director Prochazka spoke on the current interest rates on loans. He congratulated three lodge members, Helen Filipp, Lonnie Lostak and Tommie Lostak, for being among the top thirty statewide sales representatives to win trips to Nashville. He stated that ten percent of the sales representatives making the trip are from Danbury.

President Leshikar complimented the three sales representatives, also. He emphasized that the SPJST has had a large increase in sales representatives and new members, and its future looks bright. He described how changes in the laws on the fraternal benefit system could affect fraternal organizations.

Among other topics President Leshikar discussed were the upcoming Domino Tournaments.

During the business part of the meeting, Secretary Tommie Lostak, having been absent from the January meeting, read the minutes of both the December and the January meetings.

Treasurer Lonnie Lostak and Financial Secretary Helen Filipp gave their reports with Helen Filipp announcing the death of Sister Velina Sebesta.

Plans were made to hold a barbecue for all Lodge 139 members on March 28th. Lorenda Baldwin was appointed chairman in charge of making the arrangements.

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by President Jerry Milan. He also led us to the Pledge to our flag and the members remained standing for a moment of silent tribute to our deceased Sister Agnes Dolan and to our Supreme Lodge Museum Curator Brother Otto Hanus. Brother Otto will long be remembered for his dedication; his smile and personality brought smiles to many faces. May both rest in peace.

Brother Milan made welcome our guest, Nadine Sales.

All reports were approved.

Sister Mary Renfro was congratulated for being top sales representative for January.

Brother Milan read correspondence he received from Brother Otto Hanus, from the Supreme Lodge President Brother Howard Leshikar, workshop at Lodge No. 84, thank you notes from Brother Bill Bradford and Sister Sunshine Easley.

Sister Mary Pavey reported on cards sent.

Sister Ellen Simpson and Brother Jerry Wanich will be receiving their 50 - year pins. Congratulations!

It was voted and passed to send a memorial in memory of Brother Hanus to the Scholarship Fund.

To all interested in the Domino Tournament, we will play Sunday, March 1st at 1 p.m.; Straight and "42" with $5 entry fee.

Brother Milan passed around the Czechoslovak Svet Magazine. Brother Frank Kovar was on the cover and several pictures throughout the magazine, the pictures were taken while he attended the Charles University in Prague (Praha). We understand he is now teaching Czech at TCJC. Congratulations to James and Sister Kay Brown on the arrival of their daughter Krysten Elaine on February 5th, the proud grandparents are Brother Frankie and Sister Martha Milan; to Bruce and Sister Vera Richards on the arrival of their first, a son, Paul Andrew born on February 13th in Seattle, Washington (the proud grandparents are Frank and Vera

Matustikova of Kunivice) Czechoslovakia; also to Brother Tim Kret and his staff for their donation to the elementary students in the Azle Independent School District for the eye - screening exams they performed; to Sister Susan Alien whose Valentine poem to her husband was selected out of 250 entries in the Star Telegram Valentine Contest.

Sister Cynthia (Watson) Martin had a bit of good luck while attending a convention in Las Vegas, she won a Chrysler car. Yours truly also had a bit of good luck Saturday night at a Benefit Dance held at our hall, I won two - gift certificates for his and her Justin Boots.

Sisters Sherri Mason and Lisa Hopkins returned home safely last night from a trip to New York City, New York and New Haven, Connecticut; they got to visit their cousin, Brother Steve Mamula, who is studying music at a university there.

They also reported a wonderful time even though it was cold there.

Brother C.L. and Sister Patti Gage spent a few days in Las Vegas celebrating C.L.'s 40th birthday.

When they arrived home Sunday afternoon, the 8th, C.L. was greeted with a houseful of well - wishers. Was he surprised! We hope you have many more.

"Happy Birthday" to all our February celebrants!

We extend our sincere sympathy to the family of Brother Richard Hubenak of Lodge No. 92. May he rest in peace.

Quite a few of our members have really been sick with the flu or whatever it is that has been going around. Get well soon to you all!

We extend our get well wishes to Sister Margie Cline who is in Harris Hospital.

Brother Frank Kovar was our door prize winner and he was not present.

Things are really looking up at the lodge in 1987; bingo is improving, hall rentals are going great and, if you wish to rent the hall, you need to call Tony Sanchez at 264 - 9691 or Pat Sill at 265 - 5618 SOON or you may not be able to get the date that you want.

Our lodge received a very nice letter from the Strawn family; this is the family that some of the members gave clothes, toys for the children, a turkey, some deer meat, and some money after their home burned just before Christmas. This is what SPJST is all about -- helping people whose needs are greater than your own; this makes you feel good all over! Just one more example of members working together, because one person cannot do all the things that need to be done and, therefore, the officers are asking all of you members to give them a hand so more good work can be done by your lodge. Maybe you have heard someone say or try to imply that they are indispensable; then read this poem

The weather is getting prettier and what do you know; it's gardening time, again. How do I know? Well, my mother - in - law informed me that she is ready to garden and start breaking up the ground. My mother - in - law is 93 years old and still running circles around me. What else can 1 do? This sweet lady's name is Alimae Marshall.

My wife, Seale, and 1 are hosting this month of February: February 14 -- We held a Country/Western Dance with music

by Texas Country Band February 21 -- Country/Western Dance music was by Bill Wesley Band February 28 -- Country/Western Dance will be with music by Rolling River Band How long has it been since you visited our lodge? DID YOU KNOW it has been remodeled? If it's been a year since you have been there, let me tell you a few things that have changed.

The walls have a fresh coat of paint, the floors have been redone, the bleachers are gone, the rest rooms have been rebuilt, a concession booth has been added, and an exhaust system has been put in (no more smoke problems). The work days that are held the first Saturday (usually) of every month have really paid off, so if it has been a little while since you were there, come on out and enjoy the NEW LODGE 191 deep in the heart of Fuller Springs, Texas.

If you haven't paid your lodge dues, do so now. You pay at the lodge or send to SPJST, Rt. 2, Box 1695, Lufkin, Texas 75901.

Call Jerry Sizemore if you would like to volunteer to be host - hostess for any month during 1987.

Square dance lessons started February 3rd and will continue every Monday night for fifteen (15) weeks. If you are interested in taking the lessons, just come on to the lodge on Monday night. The cost is only $30 per person.

Clogging lessons started January 20th and will continue every Tuesday night for five (5) weeks. The youth lessons start at 6:30 p.m., beginners at 7 p.m.; advanced at 8 p.m. Youth lessons are free and small fee for adults.

Country/Western lessons will be starting, soon. If you are interested in taking them, contact Jerry Sizemore at 632 - 2804.

The youth of the lodge have put together a calendar of the members of Lodge 191. They are at present assembled and hope to have them on sale shortly. The cost will be $2 per calendar with funds going to benefit the youth club. Be sure to get one of these and support our youth club.

Lodge 88 The Birthday Club Sisters met for their regular monthly meeting on February 11, 1987.

President Rita Alexander opened the meeting. Secretary Rosalee Kostom read the minutes of the previous meeting, which were approved as read.

Communications were read by the secretary, a thank you card from Gladys Pulley, who had just recently lost her mother.

The financial report was given by Treasurer Lillie Spies. Sister Anna Hoffman gave a generous gift to the

club in honor of her and her husband's birthdays and their anniversary, which was graciously received by all of us.

Mary Kosut, our Sunshine Lady, read the changes in the Rules and Regulations for the second time and they were then accepted by the club.

The sick, in addition of others who have been ill for some time, are Jimmy Pokluda and Jeff Murray. We also have had the following deaths: Lillie Spies lost another brother, Adolph Gerlich, Gladys Pulley's mother, Tim Kostom and Naomi Spencer lost their brother, E.D. Kostom in New Mexico (a member of the SPJST), and Kathy Trefell who lost her brother - in - law Phil Falan.

We were so happy to see Clara Jecmenek back at the Birthday Club after a long absence, due to Tommie's illness; glad to report he's doing fine.

Also, Agnes Pederson, who had been in the hospital a while back was back looking great.

President Rita announced the District V meeting on March 8 at Lodge 88 and asked to bring pastry for our Birthday Club pastry booth. She also announced the defensive driving course on February 19 and 20, a fund raising project for June 1 Splash Day/Homecoming with Chairman Delores Condon. On March 4 (Ash Wednesday), it was decided to have a Tuna Casserole dinner with Bessie Lero in charge; on April 1, we'll have a Fiesta dinner.

Just a little extra! Louis and Oleta Hanus asked me to go with them to the annual chili supper in Needville at Lodge 81. We visited with Grandma Hanka and Mrs. Valcik. It was a rewarding trip. Grandma Hanka will be 92 on March 20, and still is a jovial person.

Dear Members and Friends: The February meeting was well attended and everyone was amazed that our Ft. Worth Fat Stock Show weather was so mild. Usually, at that time- of the year, we have very inclement weather.

Our new member, Pauline Walker, was made welcome. She is the sister of Irene Green and has moved to Ft. Worth after living in Houston for 25 years.

The birthday members were Rose Mary Gribble, Ruby Jones and Roy Alholm. Besides birthdays, the month of February seems to be noted for many kinds of celebrations; from Valentine parties to Presidents' holidays.

Mary Pavey was the door prize winner of a wooden letter rack, donated by Anna Johnson.

We express get well wishes to member, Clem Oujesky, who is in Harris Hospital in Ft. Worth after having a 4 by - pass heart surgery on Friday the 13th.

Our congratulations to Steve Kercho, son of Al and Ailene Kercho who has accepted a scholarship to attend Rice University in Houston.

Also, congratulations to Verka and Bruce Roberts for being proud parents

of a baby boy, born Friday, February 13th. Verka (Matustikova) Richards, after leaving Moravia, Czechoslovakia, has covered a lot of territory in less than three years. Not only did she graduate from the American Airlines Training School as an airline hostess, she married an airline pilot and now is a mother. You can bet that the grandparents and great - grandparents in Moravia can hardly wait to see the new off - spring.

We express our sincere sympathy to the Richard Hubenak, Sr., family on the loss of their loved one, who died on February 11, 1987. He was a lifelong friend to my family and a dedicated member of SPJST Lodge No. 92 in Ft. Worth; also, our sympathy goes to the Frank Tesar family on the loss of Lillian Tesar, Frank's sister - in - law, who was in a nursing home in the vicinity of Shiner, Texas.

Bessie Reames reported on the Czech Cultural Society and then Stanley Patak told us about the annual Kolache Festival that the WFLA holds each year will be a joint function with the American - Czech Cultural Society.

Stanley also stated the Czech Day at the State Fair, this year, will be held on the second Sunday, October 11th.

Dorothy Reznik reported on the Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council and passed out schedules of the meetings.

Under new business, Bertha Podhrasky reminded everyone to stay after the meeting and view the video of the Podluian Group from Czechoslovakia. Any free - will ionations will be given towards the Czech Chair project. President Zvolanek announced that Jerry Bartos, son of Ella Bartos, has announced his candidacy for the Dallas City Council District 3.

Olga Janosek, our hostess, brought a Valentine cake for a drawing. The lucky winner was none other than our new member, Mildred Patak.

by Sister Alice Roberts and Ann Zvolanek. The Valentine surprise treats were furnished by Sister Zdenka Skotak.

President Zvolanek also brought the picture of our Krouzek that is to be put in the Showcase.

HCCH Society Met In Pasadena

The Harris County Czech Heritage Society met at the SPJST Lodge No. 172 on February 15, 1987 with about 40 members.

The group researched about 30 different recorded books for some looked into possible family notes.

Business consisted of cemetery surveys, census surveys and treasury report.

Lodge 172 President Jerry Dressler informed the group of a Gulf Coast Czech Festival to be held on November 8, 1987 at 3609 Preston, Pasadena, Texas; the sponsors will be SPJST Lodge No. 172, San Jacinto Czech Club, and Harris County Czech Heritage Society.

Dancing Czech music and Czech singing, will be conducted by well known and established Czech organizations.

Also Czech family histories of these organizations will be on display. Czech schooling methods will be displayed and several Czech news media publications will be on display.

Perhaps you may be interested in an article published in the January 8, 1987 issue of the Suburbia - Reporter which includes a picture of me holding a copy of the Vestnik.

Apparently the Vestnik notices and the Suburbia - Reporter articles have stirred up a lot of interest in the study of the Czech language because we have had the largest registration ever this semester -- 25 students in all.

Retiree's hobby leads to teaching Czech language, European travels

By Phil Montgomery, News Editor of Suburbia - Reporter A Czech • enthusiast's love of language which began as a desire to communicate with distant relatives has led to teaching in Spring Branch (suburb of Houston) and traveling in Czechoslovakia.

Charles J. Heyda, 75, teaches a class on the Czech language at the Spring Branch Westchester Education Center.

He has traveled to Czechoslovakia seven times where he and others from the United States studied at Charles University in Prague, the capitol of Czechoslovakia.

Heyda was a chief engineer and plant manager for 42 years for American Can Company before retiring and beginning to teach.

Heyda says his parents emigrated from Czechoslovakia to the United States where they settled in Minnesota.

He says he has always spoken Czech, but when he began writing to cousins in. Europe he realized he needed to improve his language skills.

He says he signed up for his first Czech language course in 1977 and by 1980, he had begun to teach the class.

He says teaching languages is "more or less a hobby for me. I have six cousins over there."

He says as a teacher he has learned so much more than when he was a student.

Heyda says the students who take his classes at Westchester are usually working people from 30 to 40, usually second or third generation. "Most have an interest to learn the language to communicate with relatives."

"One young lady wanted to understand what her husband was saying when he spoke to his parents," Heyda says.

Heyda says Czech is a slavic language like Romanian or Bulgarian.

"It's a phonetic language. If you read it you pronounce it. It's not like English where your , ph's and ÂŁe's you don't pronounce."

Heyda also is a member of the Czech Ex - Student Association of Texas (CESAT), which begin in 1911 to maintain interest in Czech studies.

CESAT sponsors an overseas program that last summer sent a professor and a student, each with a grant, to Prague, the capitol of Czechoslovakia.

In 1984 Heyda organized a group of 25 students and this summer he had 18 students who went to the schooling offered by the Czech government.

The students attend one month of classes with a one and a half week excursion. The students only have to pay air fare to and from the country; the government of Czechoslovakia pays for everything else.

Czechs let students tour collective farm

During the last excursion the students attended a price collective farm. He says they were treated quite royally.

They stayed at a state hotel in the town of Kraslice, known for the musical instruments.

"I organize the whole group. I go over with them also as a student and I attend classes also."

He says the last group that he took consisted of the youngest, 17, and the oldest, 75. He says most of the students are third generation Czech.

He says he has been to Czechoslovakia seven times. He also says that he will probably take another group this summer. He received inquiries from as far away as Montana and Washington, D.C. from people who want to study overseas.

He says the Czechs left Europe in the late 1840s. Many of them came to New Orleans and Galveston where they moved into the interior of Texas.

Eventually they settled at towns like Bellville, Schulenburg, Brenham, Hallettsville and other areas in Texas.

Heyda says because there are not new immigrants from Czechoslovakia many of the second and third generation cannot speak the language.

"They become assimilated and lose their language," he says.

Some students do not want to study grammar, they just want to learn the language, he says. But, he says, a student needs grammar to learn the language.

The date of the 1987 District IV meeting has been changed to Sunday, April 12th. Lodge No. 160, San Angelo, will be hosting at the Wall Fire Hall from 1 to 5 p.m. More details later. ***

The month of March has many days honoring "Saints." Probably the best - known would be St. Patrick's Day. On that day, many people of Irish descent wear green clothes and have parades to honor St. Patrick.

A lesser - known holiday follows on March 19 -- St. Joseph's Day. St. Joseph's Day is the Czech counterpart to St. Patrick's Day. It is a day honoring everyone named "Joseph."

In Czechoslovakia the day was a community event for fun and merrymaking. Many Czech communities today celebrate by wearing red, having_a,parade, and even drinking red beer and eating red bread.

There is another Czech holiday in March that really isn't celebrated to any great extent today. March 12 is St. Gregory's Day. According to legend, on St. Gregory's Day, boys in the villages performed a play in honor of St. Gregory. One of, them played a prince, another the standard - bearer,

and the other was a medicine man. The boys were presented gifts for their performance. Behind the boy walked a girl, collecting gifts for the teacher's kitten. Much later, children brought their teacher a loaf of bread, flour, barley and eggs, but the children of poor parents brought snuff tobacco for the palm of her hand.

Easter Sunday is sometimes on March 30th. According to Czech folklore, painted Easter eggs (kraslice) are not only beautifully decorated, but are very symbolic as well. There are many legends and much folklore associated with the egg. The constant, remaining symbol from the very beginning of recorded history is that the egg represents Universal Creation, Fertility and Rebirth of the earth out of winter weariness into the bright promise of Spring and new Life. Many years ago Easter eggs were dyed from onion skins, beet juice and tea leaves.

District II Activities The Valentine skating party is now over and it had one of the largest attendances that we ever had. There were 144 youth and adults who put on skates; a few for the first time and didn't last long, but many of the youth skated almost 2 hours. There were 36 additional adults, leaders, assistants,

parents, and grandparents for a total of 180 which was just great. We hope you had an enjoyable afternoon skating and watching your children.

We thank you for attending this annual event and taking time to bring the youth; this is wonderful and thanks, again, to all for your support!

Letters From The Youth Lodge 9, Snook YC Meeting Dear Readers, Our February monthly meeting was called to order on Wednesday, February 4, 1987 at 6:30 p.m. by our President Angie Sebesta.

•The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Cheryl Schoeneman. Roll call, secretary's minutes, and treasurer's reports were read.

Old business was about the District I Food Show at Texas A&M and the Go Texan held at Frenstat.

Activities for this month consists of basketball games, and the chili/chicken soup supper that was held on February 7th.

Lodge members, this is a reminder to pay your dues!

Our speaker was John See III who read a Valentine message. Thanks, John! We really enjoyed it.

Our next meeting will be held on March 4th at 6:30 p.m.

13, Dime Box YC Holds Meeting

The last monthly meeting of Dime Box Youth Club was held on Sunday, February 15 at 3 p.m.

President Susan Spacek called the meeting to order, and Matthew Ford led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The roll was then called. There were 21 members and 9 adults present at our meeting. We also had a visitor, Ryan Wubenhurst.

Secretary Trudy Krenek read the minutes from our last meeting. They were approved as read.

Treasurer Jennifer Gold gave a treasurer's report. We made about $900 from the Youth Club dance which was held on Saturday, February 7th.

There was no old business. Under new businss, we dicussed two different things. The first was a community project. We finally decided to do a project called, "Adopt - a - Bridge."

We will start this project at our next month's meeting. We also decided to put an ad in the next edition of the Dime Box Longhorn, a school annual.

Claude, Lee and Sue Ellen Flippin donated $50 to the Youth Club for this purpose. Thanks!

The door prizes were then awarded to Jennifer Gold, Kurt Pharis and Delia Wiederhold. The meeting adjourned by everyone. After the meeting we played games.

Next month's meeting will be held on Sunday, March 15 at 3 p.m. Wear old clothes because we will be painting the bridge.

Dear Readers, The February 11, 1987 meeting of Lodge No. 24, Cyclone Youth Club was called to order by President Christy Marek at 7:30 p.m.

Janet Macek and Melanie Zavodny led the Pledge to the flag.

Secretary Kim Schneider called the roll. Present were 23 members, 3 adults, Mr. Frankie Klinkovsky, Mrs. Darlene Pechal and Mrs. Jane Bruggman, plus one guest, Chad Bruggman.

We have two new members, Ronson and Brandon Pechal. We welcome you and hope to see you at all of our youth functions.

Correspondence from the Seaton Lodge No. 47 youth involving a chili supper on February 27th and a thank you note from the Bell County Child Abuse Fund were read by the secretary.

Treasurer Janet Macek gave her report. Our current balance was $260.90.

Our social for the month of February was an ice cream party at Baskin - Robbins in Temple on February 15th. This was held right before the District II skating party.

Everyone had a marvelous time.

On February 22nd our youth club had a dessert booth at the mother lodge barbecue. We really did good.

Youth Leader Rose Harvell told us about the Distr ict II spring meeting to be held on March 22nd in Lovelady.

There will be a couple of buses going from the Sears & Roebuck parking lot in Temple, Texas. The cost is $10 for adults and it is free for youngsters, 6 16. If you would like to attend and would like to ride the bus, please let the youth leader know on or before Marche .

Our DYC Frankie Klinkovsky told us about some of the upcoming activities, including YAD and camp.

Birthdays in February are for Craig Waits, Jeffrey Posvar, Zachery Schneider and Adam Bruggman.

OTTO HANUS, of Temple, Texas, who died Monday, February 2, 1987 at the age of 86 years.

Services were held at 11:30 a.m. on February 5th at Wilkerson - Hatch Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Howard Leshikar and Brother Sid Pokladnik conducting the services.

Burial took place in the Pavelka Cemetery in Elk, Texas.

-Brother Otto is survived by his wife, Matilda Hanus; three daughters, Rosemary Spence of Waco, Florence Clay of San Antonio and Lucille Drury of Corpus Christi; one son, Daniel Hanus of Waco; two sisters, Elsie Geibel and Mary Sugarek; two brothers, Alton Hanus and Paul Hanus; 13 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and hundreds of loving friends.

Brother Otto was the curator of SPJST Library, Archives and Museum at the Home Office in Temple, Texas.

He was a choral member of Seaton Lodge 47 and a member of RVOS Lodge 109. He was a dedicated SPJST Lodge 66 member. There was no job too big or too small for him to tackle.

No matter what you asked of this man, he never turned you down. He became an SPJST member in 1921 and lived his life for this organization.

Brother Hanus was a loving husband, a loving father and grandfather but mostly a loving friend to all of us.

May God bless him with peace and happiness wherever he is -- I am sure he is either working in God's garden or the Heavenly Museum right now.

Preceded in death by her husband, Sister Sebesta is survived by four sons, Charlie Alvin Sebesta of Grand Junction, Colorado, Billy Gene Sebesta and Leonard Thomas Sebesta, both of Alvin and Alton Richard Sebesta of Danbury; one daughter, Darlene Mae Sebesta of Danbury; three sisters, Rosie Spriggs of Galveston, Minnie Bravenec of Houston and Mavis Sanders of Hitchcock, also 14 grandchildren.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m.

Saturday, January 31 at Palms Funeral Home Chapel of Roses in Angleton.

Bolfs Wed Fifty Years Mr. and Mrs. Louis Boll of Richmond, Texas celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.by renewing their marriage vows in a ceremony conducted by Msgr. James Madden in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Richmond on December 27, 1986.

Hosting the reception, which followed in the religious education building, were their children, Annabel Sechelski of Old Ocean and Bill Boll of Comanche. Two sons, Ernest James Bolt and Marvin Boll, are deceased.

The Bolls have ten grandchildren, Vance Sechelski, Jr., and Valeri Sechelski of Old Ocean; James, Angie and Michael Boll of Rosenberg; Marvin Boll, Jr., and Christine Bolf of Beasley; Katherine, Diana and Charlotte Boll, all of Comanche.

Annie Dubec, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Dubec of Littlefield, Texas, and Louis Bolf, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bolf of Levelland, Texas, were united in marriage on December 30, 1936, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Littlefield.

In their early married years, the Bolls lived in Levelland while he was engaged in farming. They moved to the Richmond area about 40 years ago.

After farming for several years, he worked at Freeport at the shipping docks. He retired in 1976 after working for the Texas Department of Public Highways and Transportation for six years.

Mrs. Boll was employed by Lamar School District in the Jane Long Cafeteria for 21 years. She retired in 1983.

For the anniversary party, Mrs. Boll wore a gold tone dress with black designs and had a corsage of white roses with metallic gold ribbon. Her husband had a white rose boutonniere.

The anniversary cake was a three tiered confection, iced in white and decorated with gold roses, baby's breath and swans. It was topped with the numerals "50" in gold outlined with white silk roses. The groom's cake was German chocolate and featured a caricature of a man with a large saw to depict Louis Bolf's hobby of tree trimming. The cakes were made and decorated by their daughter.

Assisting the Bolfs' children with host duties were their son - in - law, Vance Sechelski; daughter - in - law, Evelyn Bolf, and Janie Payne and JoAnn Barcak.

A barbecue dinner was served to approximately 85 guests in the evening.

Guests were from Levelland, Skidmore, Houston, Sealy and Rosenberg area.

The Bolfs are members of the SPJST Society.

Podluian Came To Victoria Dr. Clint Machann of Bryan originally contacted Marjorie Matula, state president of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, who also serves as vice president of the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society in early November about hosting the PODLUZAN in Victoria as part of a Sesquicentennial Good - Will tour following their performance in Bryan at the Music Symposium on November 15, 1986.

PODLUZAN was sponsored by the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society in cooperation with the Cultural Council of Victoria, the Victoria Fine Arts Association, the Victoria Chamber of Commerce and the Bluebonnet Convention Center.

Society President Joe D. Janak, Jr. obtained the support of the above -

mentioned civic organizations on short notice. He and Melicent Bryarly prepared attractivc iblicity flyers for the event which wa. .t for November 21, 1986 at the Blueb let Convention Center in Victoria. It is my duty to arrange accommodations for two nights. V.T. Kallus, Society director, assisted by calling Society members because time was very short.

Excitement and confusion was high as PODLUZAN arrived at the Holiday Inn parking lot on November 20th from East Bernard, accompanied by Rudy Klecka and others; that evening, the Society hosted a covered dish reception where our PODLUZAN` guests shared what type of work they did in Czechoslovakia. It was indeed enjoyable.

On Friday morning, November 21st, Frankline Elles and Robert Obsta accompanied by Jules Silvers of Houston took most of the orchestra members to Shiner (Lavaca County),

12/VESTNIK—Wednesday, February 25, 1987 Texas for a tour of the Spoetzl Brewery (several remained in Victoria to rest). The group enjoyed lunch at the Janak Retreat near Shiner. A fun time was had by all.

Robert and Doris Obsta had a private reception that evening prior to their Friday night performance. Oh, what a performance it was! It was spectacular! Over 300 attended the concert and ballroom dancing from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Thadious Polasek of Moravia, Texas graciously translated for us. Someone attending the concert remarked, "just think some people travel thousands of miles to see this in Czechoslovakia but we are fortunate to have it brought to us." The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society presented PODLUZAN Leader Tibor Janog with a trophy to be placed in their museum in Bfeclav, Moravia. Joe Janak received a dance figurine and Marjorie Matula received a ceramic bell, as did the hosting families. It was an enriching experience for each of the families -- many have exchanged cards and letters since their return to Czechoslovakia in early December.

optimistic Juren Faces Challenges At Tesoro Petroleum

By Judi Critton San Antonio Business Journal "Profile," February 9, 1987 Fifteen - year - old Dennis Juren saw two career options while growing up in the small Texas town of Ellinger: "dragging a pick sack in the cottonfield," or working at his uncle's service station. "I immediately took a liking to the petroleum business," Juren recalled.

Today, as the 51 - year - old president of Tesoro Petroleum Corporation, Juren said he would not change any part of his 36 - year career -- even in light of the depresed oil industry conditions that lead to his firm losing $211 million over the past two years.

"From a businessman's standpoint, being faced with real adversity can yield some of the most rewarding and satisfying results," Juren said.

"You're tackling problems that require more innovation, more imagination and more care than ever before."

Tesoro last week reported a net loss of $6 million, or 61 cents per share, for the first quarter of its fiscal 1987 ended December 31, 1986. Racked by declining oil prices, the firm lost $87 million in 1985 and $124 million in 1986. Tesoro last reported positive net earnings in 1984, when it had earnings of $17 million Its consolidated gross income dropped from $2.3 billion in 1985 to $1.5 billion last year. The company has taken several measures to reverse the trend, including discontinuing dividend payments to shareholders and instituting a deferred compensation plan for its executives.

The $6 million net loss for the first quarter of 1987 was an improvement from the first quarter 1986 loss of $9.5 million.

Not surprisingly, Juren admits that he has worked harder in the past year than ever before -- and he has enjoyed the challenge.

"The environment is intensely competitive in a tight market. You've got to be able to move quickly and make decisions quickly to try to stay a step or two ahead of your competitors," he said. "These tough times can be some of the most rewarding. You know if you can move forward in these times you can really grow."

When asked about the company, Juren answers thoroughly and enthusiastically. Answers about himself come in sparse syllables.

Juren, who drew a 1986 salary of $375,000, believes personal and corporate goals are one and the same.

"If the company tends to prosper economically, I tend to prosper economically. To the extent that the company can grow and expand, career - wise I can grow and expand. The two are very closely woven together," he said.

"It stays with me most of the time. I can go off, be away from the office, be away from business, but I don't think I ever forget what it's all about," said Juren, who has lived in San Antonio since joining Tesoro in 1970.

He thinks his concentration on business is an asset. "I don't think I'm harming myself by keeping it (business) in the forefront as far as my activities are concerned."

William Crome, vice president of marketing and supply distribution for Tesoro, said Juren is a demanding, hands - on leader.

"What he expects from the people who work for him is a brief, direct analysis and rapid response. He wants you to come prepared whether it's a question he wants answered or a proposal," said Crome, who has worked for Juren for 12 years. Crome denied that that kind of exacting attention creates a tense atmosphere.

"Dennis is a shirtsleeves kind of guy. He fully expects to participate and does to the extent that you need it," Crome said.

Juren said he was an "average" high school student who was voted "most athletic" by his classmates. He sees nothing unusual in his trip from the playing field to the boardroom.

"I don't think there are any shortcuts. All the old axioms apply, at least in my case," Juren said. He attributes his climb to "a lot of hard work, a lot of preparation in formal education, and a lot of help and support from the people along the way."

After a two - year Army stint, Juren attended the University of Texas.

When a relative got him a summer job in a Houston refinery as a roustabout, his academic plans changed.

"The pay was very nominal, but so much better than anything else (that) I decided to keep working and started going to school at night." With that schedule, he earned a bachelor's degree in economics and a master's degree in finance at the University of Houston.

He was manager of track - side service stations in Gulfport, Mississippi, when an opportunity arose for him to start his own petroleum distributorship in Houston.

Four years later, he joined Coastal States Petrochemical Company in Houston as the vice president of marketing and supply.

He joined Tesoro in 1970 as senior vice president and served as group vice president before his election as president and a member of the Board of Directors in 1980.

Travel always has been a part of his career. Juren spends, about 15 percent of his time in Alaska, where Tesoro has the majority of its operations.

Juren said he sees similarities in Texans and Alaskans. "They both share a strong sense of independence, entrepreneurship and can - do attitude," he said. "People in Alaska are very aggressive and outgoing ."

Those are the qualities he hopes attract employees to Tesoro. "That's part and parcel of our ability to withstand some of the adversity that's befallen the industry right now," he said.

Despite the industry downturn, Tesoro appears to be in stronger shape than some of its key competitors, and Juren remains optimistic about the future.

"We have a very strong balance sheet. We've got in the range of 30 percent debt total capitalization, and a good, strong internally generated cash flow."

Juren said Tesoro is positioned to look at opportunities to make the company grow and prosper. Cautious growth during the boom years between 1979 and 1981 has been the company's greatest strength in weathering the current oil industry downturn, he said.

"The temptation existed during that time to rapidly expand business and take advantage of redeploying capital in some form or fashion. There was ample opportunity to leverage up, borrow money to further expand.

"Lenders were quite eager and willing. Projections were based on crude oil not only staying in the $30 range, but growing linearly out to the future projecting prices of $50, $60, $100 per barrel."

When those projections "turned out to be fiction rather than fact," projects crumbled. Juren said firms that over - expanded and over committed themselves were the first to feel the downturn. Oil prices were at $18 per barrel last week.

Juren flatly refuses to classify any aspect of his life as exceptional.

"To think that you're exceptional is egotistical. So much of what anyone accomplishes in a corporate environment is a function of the contribution of the team, not just the guy who happens to be quarterback or president. I think there might be some problems with a person assuming he is exceptional."

George Leslie, a neighbor when the Juren family lived in the Sage Crest area, has been a friend for many years, but he still does not have a handle on Juren. "I don't know a whole lot about the rascal's background, because he just doesn't talk about himself," said Leslie, vice president of Delray Oil Company in San Antonio.

"The only thing I didn't like about the guy is he's always gone -- no time to visit."

Work and the related travel are not the only things that keep Juren on the go.

His community service involvements include the Executive Board of the Alamo Area Council, Boy Scouts of America and the Bexar County Hospital District, among other area organizations.

"He's not the kind of person to put his name on something just for the credit. He works one - on - one with kids and in committees," Leslie said.

Juren is in the process of restoring an old farm outside of Bandera.

Rather than hiring contractors and approving plans, he is swinging an ax, clearing land and fencing.

"Whacking away at a cedar tree with an ax is a good way of venting the business frustrations that accumulate during the week," he said. "I like to engage in that kind of activity and think about work in a different environment."

Its common usage is relatively new, but it has almost replaced "dobre odpoledne" meaning "good afternoon" and has been making inroads in replacing even "dobre rano" or "dobre jitro". "DobrS7 den" has replaced also quite a few overly polite greetings such as "poklona, ma ticta, rukulibam, etc." Good riddance. *** "Dobre rano" is used more in the country, while "dobre jitro" is more common in the cities. "Dobre jitro" is becoming more and more common.

Since "jitro" is a poetic word and not otherwise commonly used, you may run across an abbreviation "dobrSitro", which is strictly colloquial.

"Sbohem" has a religious origin.

Literal translation is "with God" and traces apparently to the phrase "Jdi (or Jdete) s Bohem". "Jdi" is singular, while "Jdete" is plural imperative (meaning "Go with God"). The religious meaning has been slowly lost in the common usage, therefore, it is written now as one word, "sbohem", instead of "s Bohem".

The religious meaning has been largely preserved with the longer form of the same greeting "s Pattern Bohem", and, therefore, it is usually written as three separate words with capital letters. Literal translation would be "with Lord God." Occasionally, you may see it written as one word, "spanern bohem".

"DobrSr veeer" and "dobrou noc" is used similarly as in this country. The same is true of "na shledanou".

"Nazdar" was made popular by the Sokols, and in this country it was regarded as a special Sokol greeting.

This is no longer so. "Nazdar" is very common, and no longer connected with Sokol use exclusively. When you meet someone who is older or whom you do not know closely, then the greeting of "dobrSr den" would come to your lips, while a close friend or contemporary you would greet with "nazdar". From the point of an English-speaking person, the usage of "nazdar" is peculiar in the sense that it could and actually is commonly used, not only when meeting a person like the American "hello", but also in parting, instead of "na shledanou" or "sbohem". *** (Nowadays: "Ahoy!" is also used very much for Hello and/or Farewell or Goodbye.— Editor.)

Perspective and Imperative Verbs.

According to the character of verbal action there exist two types of verbs in Czech, perfective and imperfective.

They occur in pairs.

1) The imperfective verb emphasizes the course of the action (Something is going on.), or its repetition (Something happens often, more than once.). The verbs given so far in this course were all imperfective.

2) The perfective verb presents verbal action as perfected, completed, emphasizing the outcome, consequence or product of the action. We look at the action quickly, as if summarizing it up.

The imperfective verbs may be roughly compared with the English simple (I write) or continuous tense (I am writing), the perfective verb with the English perfect tense (I have done).

The perfective and imperfective members of each verbal pair are formally differentiated.
