This week the Insurance Department is announcing its top producing sales representatives who achieved their "One Million Dollar or More" production in 1986.

It is indeed commendable of these individuals who contributed so much of their "free" time to the Society to acquire the suitable need for each prospect. It can be difficult to convince a prospect that life insurance is truly a necessity in every home, even though there are many members who still refrain from purchasing additional life insurance for themselves and/or their loved ones; there is still time to convince them of this fact. We trust those whom it may concern that they will not set it aside for another year or so. Those of you who receive the Vestnik see the names of sales representatives' phone numbers, we suggest you get in touch with them!

This sales force is well - trained by our State Field Manager/State Field Representatives, who stand ready to explain your life insurance needs.

It is, at this time, in order for the general membership to join the editor in expressing our "heartiest" congratulations to this outstanding working force. May the 1987 year be even more productive.

The Czech Folk Dancers of West have received an invitation to perform in Detva, Czechoslovakia in July this year. The formal invitation was received stating they would perform July 12th at the annual Folk Festival where folk dancers from Hungary, France, Yugoslavia, Romania, etc. perform each year. The group hopes they can raise enough money to make the trip. They would leave (tenatively) July 3rd and return July 16th.

The Czech government offers twenty (20) West Dancers room and board, food, spending money, and give them a tour of Czechoslovakia.

The group hopes to travel, visit people and, possibly, attend other festivals.

Many people in Texas and Oklahoma have seen this group (several of the dancers are members of SPJST Lodges 6, 35, 54 and 66) perform before; they are under the direction of Sister Maggie Grmela with her husband, Ernest who are also SPJST members.

The folk dancers would appreciate your contribution toward their air fare trip.

We wish them good luck and a safe voyage as well as safe return!

Letter To The Editor Dear Editor: It was my pleasure to view the SPJST program "Czechs in Texas" on a local television station on January 28th at 10:30 p.m.

Needless to say, I enjoyed it immensely and I do hope members of the fraternity were aware of the fact that it would be televised and enjoyed it as well.

They carry electronic paging devices, or beepers, that signal when a message is waiting from the office, a client or perhaps home. The number of beeper users is expected to double by 1990. Is one in your future? It depends. on how much you want to stay in touch.

Beepers have an. attention - getting way of going off in public, even though most have a silent mode that makes them vibrate rather than beep, when desired. _ Pagers still are carried mostly by doctors, salespersons and others who need to stay in close touch with their offices, but a big effort now is being made to sell _them to ordinary consumers for use in their personal lives. Prices have fallen from past levels of $100 to $300 to a low of $50 on sale, plus amonthly fee of perhaps $5 and a per - call charge of maybe 20 cents.

Retailers say that consumers are finding lots of jobs for beepers. Some expectant fathers now wear pagers in order to be present when the time comes. When parents go out at night, they can take along a beeper so that the baby - sitter can alert them if necessary. Some parents also use a pager to beep a youngster home for supper after an afternoon of softball or to signal a teenager out on a date that curfew has arrived. People in frail health can give a pager to a friend or relative to summon help if it should be needed.

Each pager has its own _ phone number. When the number is dialed, a signal goes _to the pager from a radio relay service. The least expensive models emit only one tone. For about $50_ more, you can buy a unit that makes two sounds, enabling you to tell whether it is_your boss or your spouse trying to reach you. At the higher end of the price scale are models with the ability to relay short voice messages, rather than beeps, and still others that can display letters and numbers, enabling them to present written messages.

Pagers require little maintenance other than a fresh battery every month or two. But because of their small size, they are easily _misplaced. Owners should be especially careful not to leave them_ in cars overnight in the winter or summer, since they can be permanently damaged by extreme_cold or heat. It is also important to limit the number. of people with the _pager's phone number to avoid confusion over who is calling. *** The key to helping a child learn to read well often lies in convincing the youngster that reading is_ not only important for schoolwork but also fun. _ To help children gain _ an appreciation for books, the American Federation of Teachers offers a 156 page guide, "Your Child Can _Be _ a Super_ Reader," by reading specialist Len Kusnetz. From The Vice President's Office 1986 Million Dollar Producers To Be Identified The SPJST Sales Representatives production in 1986 surpassed goals that had been anticipated by the Supreme Lodge.

Seventeen members of our "All Volunteer" sales force produced over One Million Dollars of issued Life Insurance each. Charlie Waits of Cyclone Lodge 24 made available close to Four Million Dollars of benefits to SPJST members. Stanley Broz of Lodge 160, Jerome Hiavaty of Lodge 153 and Martha Broz of Lodge 160 each produced over Two Million Dollars of Life Insurance coverage to our members. To achieve this Million Dollar Plateau is no easy task and to do it on a volunteer basis is even more extraordinary.

In recognition for being a Million Dollar Producer, the Supreme Lodge has authorized a special Gold Lapel Pin to identify these sales representatives for their outstanding achievement.

The first year a sales representative attains a Million Dollars of issued Life Insurance business, he or she will be awarded an SPJST Gold Lapel Pin. Each year this achievement is duplicated a Diamond will be added to the pin.

Lodge No. 9, Snook Meeting The Snook Lodge No. 9 met for their monthly meeting on February 4 at 7 p.m.

President Richard Vajdak called the meeting to order.

Lodge Jan Ziika No. 18, Elgin Newly - elected President Dale Kessel opened the meeting held on January 20, 1987 at 8 p.m.

After the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, the roll call of officers showed all present, except for Financial Secretary Lambert Peterson.

Secretary Gilbert Kubicek then read the correspondence which was received followed by the minutes of our December meeting. The minutes were approved as read.

Reports were then read by the following: Bar Report -- Curly Gustafson Ticket Report -- Gladys Mogonye Entertainment Report -- Leslie Gustafson Kitchen Report -- Dale Kessel House Report -- Irene Heldgren Under new business, it was decided to install two additional extra lights for our parking lot.

Next, we discussed fund - raisers for the upcoming months. With the weather cooperating like it has, it's time to fire up the "ole pit" and sell some delicious_barbecue!

After the drawing for the door prize, which was again won by Sister Gladys Mogonye, the meeting was adjourned.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Meeting Dear Readers: Our February meeting was called to order by President Barbara Macek.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed for deceased members. All officers were present.

Secretary Carol Chervenka read the minutes of the January meeting, they were approved. Committee chairmen

gave their reports and the board report was also read.

New business, to start off the meeting, was a barbecue dinner to be held Sunday, February 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be barbecue chicken served with all the trimmings at a cost of $3.75 in advance and $4 at the door; plates to go will also be available.

There was much discussion on dances and hiring bands for the year.

Several new bands will be playing at Flag Hall, so come by and check them out.

Birthday celebrants for February are Tracie Chervenka and Craig Waits.

Anniversary celebrants are Johnny and Carol Chervenka. We hope you all have a wonderful day.

Frank Klinkovsky was a visitor at our meeting and asked if Lodge 24 would host the District II YAD on July 19th. We accepted and so you can start making plans to come out to enjoy the kids.

Remember, the District II spring meeting at Lovelady Lodge No. 74 on March 22nd. Chartered buses will be going, if you are interested contact Frank Klinkovsky or Barbara Macek as soon as possible.

Lodge No. 47 Seaton will be holding an old - fashioned picnic on June 7th.

Write that on your calendar so you can make plans to attend.

Our next meeting will be March 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: President Jerry Pechal called the February 1 lodge meeting to order at 2 p.m. Flag Bearers Tracy Klusacek and James Billeck, substituting for Heidi Schroeder, brought in the flags. We remained standing in silent tribute to Brother Waymond James Gerza, age 50, of the Ben Arnold Community.

Our deepest sympathy to the surviving widow and other relatives. May our lodge brother rest in eternal peace.

A warm welcome was expressed to all members and visitors Ann Balusek, Gertrude Kahlig, Joe Macek, Carole Pechal and Freddie Schroeder were introduced; all of you have an invitation to come again. Eighty - two members registered and these five visitors we had a very good attendance once again.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, sales representatives and the board of trustees; Flag Bearer Heidi Schroeder was absent.

Minutes of our previous meeting were read and approved after an addition. Correspondence included a thank you from the Waymond Gerza Family for floral offering and other courtesies; Legal Adviser Sidney Kacir asking the correct ID number on the claim for pending funds due the lodge; a letter advising that we have ten members to receive 50 - year pins in 1987, namely, Calvin Chervenka, Vlasta Divis, Walter Haisler, Miladie Jecmenek, Adolph Junek, W.E. Kosarek, Frank Sefeik, Louis A. Sirny, Georgia Sodek and Lydia Vanicek; these pins are to be sent to the lodge and awarded in the May lodge meeting; also a letter from SL President Howard Leshikar of the Sesquicentennial film to be aired on TV on February 16 at 9 p.m. and February 27 at 9 p.m. Watch the Vestnik for more details.

New members are Kristin R. Simmons, and 'conversions" are Kristen Bartek, Irma A. Klinkovsky, Sara Nicole Wagner, Jessica L. Lyon, and Elizabeth A. Sodek. We are proud you chose our lodge for membership and do come to the meetings. Also Brother Albert Koslovsky transferred from Lodge 89, Rosebud to our lodge.

On the sick list were the following: Brothers Edwin J. Chlapek, Frank V. Spanhel, Louis J. Kohutek, Louis Simy and Sisters Joyce Klinkovsky and Vallie Zavodny. Sister Dorothy Morris has been hospitalized since the meeting. Hopefully, everyone is feeling better.

Officers' reports included: The president reported on the refrigerator unit that was moved recently and he wanted to know what to do with the electronic filters that will be in the way when we use the building they are being stored in; they will be disposed of. Brother Dan Balusek, District II rest homes director, reported that, due to some impending circumstances, the 30 - year celebration of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor was postponed to Sunday, May 17th. Also, the Domino and Taroky Tournaments are fast approaching. On the Lodge 47 Committee are Brothers Willie E. Kohutek, Dan Balusek and Dan Hejl.

Dates set are: Friday, March 13 -- "Straight," 6 p.m.

Friday, April 3 -- "42," 6 p.m.

Be sure to check with the committee if you wish to play. Other officers, chairpersons and Board Secretary Adeline Kohutek had their monthly reports.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky gave her report; 24 members were present, 4 adults and 2 young visitors. They made Valentine favors that they took to the Colonial Nursing Home in Cameron to all of the residents, including Brother Frank and Sister Mary Shenkir, parents of Sister Adeline Kohutek on Saturday, February 7; fourteen members plus six adults from Lodge 47 were in attendance. They went to the park and were then treated to cookies and sodawater afterward. It was nice to see the Shenkirs, again, and they were glad to see us.

The District II skating party was set for Sunday, February 15, training session for youth leaders next weekend, and the fund - raiser -- chili supper/auction on Friday, February 27 at 6 p.m. Be there to support the youth club with donations of cakes, auction items and, especially, your presence.

District II Director Brother Willie E. Kohutek gave a detailed report on top sales representatives of our district and other upcoming changes in insurance.

DYC Frank Klinkovsky informed Lodge 47 members that buses will be going to Lodge No. 74, Lovelady for the District II spring meeting on Sunday, March 22; contact either the president or Brother Klinkovsky if you wish to go by bus by Sunday, March 1st, also skating party -- February 15th.

New business was the upcoming picnic; Chairperson Dan Wiley did not have the various booth chairpersons assigned, yet. A few have volunteered.

February birthdays will be observed

by Wallace Jez, Helen Janacek, Raymond Bragewitz and Freddie Schroeder. Wedding anniversaries in February are Dorothy and Nick Morris, Rosie and Bill Craft, Claudette and Tim Reese, Ruth and Frank Janacek. May you have the "special" day celebrated the right way and enjoy many, many more in the future years.

Door prizes were won by Irma Klinkovsky and Woodrow Marek. We enjoyed a stew supper prepared by Willie E. and Adeline Kohutek and their helpers, after adjournment.

92 February Meeting

Dear Members and Friends; Sunday, February 8th, weatherwise was more like April, a beautiful day that perhaps was the reason for a very nice attendance at _ our monthly meeting. "Grandpa" Albert Kubala opened the meeting following many congratulations on the birth of another grandchild, Christina Elaine, born on January 26th to Sherry Kubala Watkins and husband, Mike. Later Miss Christina made an appearance and most certainly was the youngest member present, and promptly was taken in charge by grandmother Helen. Another granddaughter, Kelly, led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers' reports were given and all were approved and three new members were accepted.

Under old business, further plans for bar and kitchen improvements were explained and discussed.

It was nice to see Flora Koci, Florence and Jimmy Greer present; they have not attended lately; come again, often!

Sunshine Chairperson Martha Durham told us that she had sent 14 senior citizen birthday cards for the month of February. Birthday members present were serenaded with the ever popular "Happy Birthday." They were Evelyn Zak, Clara Cohen, Youth Leader Cheryl Hubenak (a leap - year person) and, last but certainly not least in claiming the greatest number of birthdays, was Bennie Bartek who was a wonderful 91 on February 2nd.

Many of us would love to be as active on our lesser natal days.

While still on the subject of celebrations, we were told that Justine Chaloupka and Evelyn Spacek will be going to Buckholts, Texas to help honor Evelyn's aunt, Matilda Sisa, who will be 100 years old on February 11th. She is the mother of Lodge 92 member Clara Kunesh. The has received a centernarian congratulatory message from President Reagan. All were pleased that only one get - well card was sent but regretted to hear that the recipient was Margaret Kratky who recently

Several families had good news to relate. Clara Cohen informed us of the honor received by her grandson, Curt Tweed. He was named Junior Class Favorite at Arlington Heights High School. He is the son of Marsha and Chuck Tweed and his siblings are Sheri and Brad.

Al and Alene Kercho's son, Stephen, will be attending Rice Unversity in Houston on an Athletic Scholarship following his graduation from high school this Spring.

Jon Eric Paprskar was elated at being named second place winner in the Hurst area elementary schools Science Fair that was comprised of a sizeable number of entrants. Hey, that's our grandson! Jon Eric's little sister, Jolie, is a competition skater.

Another granddaughter, Brette Leigh Brown, received fourth place honors in her class of fifty.

A discussion concerning the Domino and Taroky Tournament ended in a decision to have prospective entries chosen at the family night gathering and that the entry fee for the winners of Lodge 92 will be paid for by our lodge.

At 4 p.m., Carl Zich made a motion for adjournment and we enjoyed a delicious dinner and social time. Next month's hostesses are Marie and Joyce Tesar.

On Monday, following the lodge gathering, several reports were received about the lovely baby shower that was held for Corina and Robert Cranfill after the meeting. It was attended by nearly 100 guests who presented the parents - to - be with enough gifts to supply baby with both necessities and luxuries for some time.

Grandma and Grandpa Joyce and Frankie Tesar supplied a keg of beer for the menfolks who usually don't care to take part in the gift opening and later everyone enjoyed a sumptuous meal.

142 Gains Many New Members Lodge

Dear Members and Readers: Our regular monthly meeting was called to order on Sunday, February 8, 1987 at 2 p.m.

We had fifty members and guests present who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Secretary Alice Jochen read the minutes from our previous meeting which stood approved as read. Roll call of officers showed all were present.

The financial secretary/treasurer's report was read by Sidon Tumis.

Keith Kieschnick read the youth club report. Keith thanked everyone who helped the youth by donating paper sand cokes, plus all those who helped on the paper routes.

We had no report from the Sick Committee, Grievance Committee and Auditing Committee at this meeting.

Brother Sidon Tumis reported the names of our new member Diane Christen, Samantha Battalia, Erika Perez, Eugene Stepanik, Betty J. Stepanik, Dorothy Marman, Ricky T. Hooper and Lillian R. Dockel; these were signed up by Sales Representatives Sidon Tumis (7), and Raymond Budewig (1). We also had 3 members who changed over to single pay life.

President Dennis Hermis recognized our visitor and District V Director Jerry Prochazka. He spoke and reported that the Supreme Lodge LAM Curator Otto Hanus had died.

We were so sorry to hear the sad news.

He also informed our membership about the reduced loan rates and that anyone with high interest outstanding loans can get these modified down to 10 percent; there also will be a "Fraternalist for the Year," and a deserving person can have his name sent to President Howard Leshikar at the Supreme Lodge by the end of the year.

Visitors at our meeting were Jerry Prochazka, Joe Gambil, Jo Buri, Kasten Walther and Jo Ann Buri.

Our President Dennis Hermis had taped the TV film on "Czechs and Texas Checkerboard." He will show this film at our next meeting on March 1st, at the request of our membership.

Remember, our next meeting date has been changed to MARCH 1st at 2 p.m.; changed from March 8 due to the District V meeting at Lodge No. 88 on the same date.

Capsule drawing for $10 went unclaimed by the absence of Doren Wayne Dornak. The next month's capsule prize will be $20.

The oldest member present, Ms. Erna Febrle, received a $5 attendance prize. Congratulations to Ms. Febrle.

Door prizes went to Frank Tumis, Henrietta Veselka, Alice Jochen and Fred H. Buri.

Our meeting adjourned at 2:50 p.m. after which everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch of fried chicken and all the trimmings, also refreshments.

Newly - elected officers and Board of Trustees of Lodge No. 187 were installed during the December 28 Christmas party.

The officers for 1987 include President Gene Landry of Lodge 187, Treasurer Victor Kunz, Financial Secretary Joan Boydston and Secretary Larry Rohlack.

Members of the Board of Trustees include Neil Boydston, Darlene Burkland, Albert Lange, Arnold Leschber, Wilbert Nelson, David "Red" Oman and Henry Wobus.

The officers and trustees were installed by Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar. Other dignitaries attending the installation ceremonies were Mrs. Mary Leshikar (Brother Howard's wife), the District II Director Willie E. Kohutek and his wife, Adeline.

A special presentation was made during the December 28 meeting by members of Lodge 187 to Mr. David "Red" Oman. The presentation was made to publicly recognize and thank "Red" for his many years of unending service and dedication to Lodge 187 and the community. "Red" is well known for his unselfish willingness to actively support activities involving the Hutto and Williamson County area.

Lodge 187 is truly honored and blessed to have individuals like "Red" Oman as a friend and member of the Board of Trustees.

80 Contributes $750 To Charity

Dear Members and Friends: I didn't make a report of our January meeting of Lodge 80 in Holland. I am reporting some highlights of the January 1987 meeting.

President Bohac called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 4 after the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent tribute to our departed members.

President Bohac welcomed our guests, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and Mrs. Leshikar.

First order of business was to install the officers of our lodge for 1987. The installed officers are: President -- D.I. Bohac Vice President -- Jerry Massar Secretary/Treasurer -- Glen Latham

Financial Secretary -- Glenda Liles Reporter -- Joe Barabas, Jr. The installation was performed by our honored guest, SL President Leshikar who also spoke to our membership later in our meeting.

The minutes of the December meeting were read by Glenda Liles because Secretary Glen Latham was absent. The minutes were accepted as read.

After various discussions pertaining to our lodge, the meeting adjourned to enjoy a social hour anda delicious chili meal with all the trimmings was served to the members and guests present at our meeting. The meal was donated by yours truly and my son - in - law Joe Fronek, who did most of the preparing.

Now' we go to our February meeting, which was held on Sunday, February 1st at 2 p.m. The meeting started at 2 p.m. with President Bohac presiding, which began with the Pledge of Allegiance and the members were asked to remain standing for a moment of silent tribute to our departed members.

Minutes from the January meeting were read by Secretary Latham and accepted as read.

Under correspondence, we had a thank you card from Mary Barabas, while she was in the hospital and also a letter from President Leshikar pertaining to the Czech film to be shown on TV Station KNCT on February 27th at 9:30 p.m.

New members admitted to our lodge are Timothy Vickers and Andrea Vickers, Welcome, young folks to our lodge!

In other business, the American Legion Post #526 of Holland donated 10 tables to the hall.

It was voted to give $250 to the SPJST Cemetery here near Holland and also voted to give $500 to the Junior Youth Fair in Temple from the Bingo Fund.

At the meeting we gave a pause to our Financial Secretary and SPJST Sales Representative Glenda Liles for winning a trip to Memphis, Tennessee and the Grand Ole Opry, for being one of the top 20 sales representatives for selling the most SPJST insurance sales in 1986; she and her husband will have an expense - paid trip for 4 days.

Our congratulations to you, Glenda, keep up the good work!

Dear Members of the SPJST: A few months ago, during the Sesquicentennial Symposium that was held in Bryan, Texas, by CESAT, John J. Karas, as a guest speaker, delivered an excellent speech entitled, "Pavel Ki• ikovskSi (1820 - 1885)."

The life of Pavel KfakovskS7 appeared in the Vesta( SPJST Herald, both in the Czech and English languages. John J. Karas also gave his efforts to re establish the Czech language at the University of Houston in 1972.

Over many years, the multitude of his interesting and educational articles appeared in the Czech - enthnic press here in Texas. John's writeups, some in English, but most of them in Czech dealing with wide range of subjects, are truly dedicated to the preservation of our Czech heritage in the State of Texas. During the past 38 years, he has written many articles for the preservation of our Czech language in such countries as England, France, Italy and Canada. His articles began appearing in our Vestnik some 18 years ago. John's articles in our Czech Texas press should be appreciated by all who care about our Czech heritage.

Czech Folk Dancers Of West To Perform In Czechoslovakia The following letter arrived on February 6, 1987 from the Embassy of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic Office in Washington, D.C. MATICA SLOVENSKA Mildred Dokupil Czech Folk Dancers of West 103 Oakland Drive Waco, Texas 76705 The U.S. of America Dear Countryman, Matica Slovenska, and the Office regarding the Slovaks abroad, organize; the 20th annual jubilee of folkloric dancing groups under the name of the traditional festivals under Polanou Mountain in Detva in 1987.

During these festivities countrymen will present the complete program which is viewed by thousands of enthusiastic viewers each year.

Organizers of this dramatic program are inviting your dancing group to participate in this program. The number of participants should not exceed 20 people.

The stay of your dancing group is from July 3 to July 16, 1987. With secure participation in folklore festival in VSrchodnej for July 6 to July 19, 1987. During this stay we will cover lodging, food, pocket money and travel expenses within the territory of Czechoslovakia.

Ing. Ondrej Karkus *** Bill and Mildred Dokupil met friends Jana and Joska Ciganek in Hluk in July 1986. They, along with Karl Vaculik of Hluk, traveled to Detva on July 12. There the Dokupils were introduced to Mr. Karkus who heads up all the festivals in Czechoslovakia. After a meeting with Mr. Karkus, they all went to the Detva Festival. There we were treated like royalty. VIP seats for two days.

Privileges were given to use a Video camera. After the program, they again met with Mr. Karkus. He then invited the Czech Folk Dancers of West, by oral invitation, to participate in their festival in 1987. He stated that a written invitation would be sent after we arrived home discussed it with the group's approval. A letter was written, a video of the dancers was sent to Mr. Karkus.

After a long waiting period, the letter and invitation finally arrived.

CESAT Executive Committee Meeting Held In Temple January 31, 1987 The first Executive Committee meeting of 1987 of the Czech Ex Students Association of Texas (CESAT) was held in the RVOS Headquarters Building in Temple, Texas on Saturday, January 31, 1987.

The meeting was opened by President Calvin Chervenka with words of thanks to Mr. Glen Hutka, president of RVOS, for the use of the RVOS meeting room and facilities.

Mr. Hutka replied in kind words with a welcome to the CESAT Executive Committee and members and a pledge of support for CESAT activities.

Inasmuch as this was the first Executive Committee meeting called

by President Chervenka, most of the meeting was devoted to review of the work of the various committees during the past several months.

A preliminary report furnished by Dr. Clinton Machann on the CESAT Music Symposium held in Bryan last November which sponsored the Podltilan cymbalista orchestra, song and dance ensemble indicates that this entire program was completed without a deficit and whatever amounts to a surplus after all costs are cleared will be donated to the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT).

Congratulations and expressions of appreciation were extended to the CESAT members and the people of various Czech organizations who cooperated so wonderfully to make the PodluIan tour a success.

Secretary/Treasurer Miss Donna Kaspar reported that the new membership dues schedule approved in the 1986 annual meeting now in effect as of January 1, 1987 is an follows: $2.50 per year -- Student or Associate Member $7.50 per year -- Sustaining Member $15.00 per year -- Contributing Member $25.00 per year -- Patron of the Scholarship Fund All members are urged to send their contributions to: Miss Donna Kaspar 424 West Lake Drive Taylor, Texas 76574 Charles Heyda reported on the renewed interest in the study of the Czech language as indicated by the record enrollment of 24 students in the Czech classes at the Spring Branch Westchester Education Center plus classes at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, Alief and Alvin.

At the annual meeting last June a proposal was approved to pay the cost of course, tuition and books for any student enrolling in a Czech language credit course. So far, no students have availed themselves of this offer, and so it is evident more publicity about this program may be necessary by the Foreign Language Department at University of Texas - Austin.

A report by Mr. Ace Chlapek, treasurer of the Texas Council of Higher Education, indicated that the student loan program is in good financial order with 14 loans outstanding on which repayments are being made as planned.

Acknowledgment was made of donations to the T.C.H.E. by RVOS -$200 and KJT $150.

Mr. Albert Blaha reported on the activities of the various Czech heritage organizations in Texas and the need for an "umbrella" organization to

coordinate the activities of the different groups. Such an organization could make available to all persons interested in Czech ancestry information on Czech books, publications, archives, etc.

In a brief discussion of the CEFT campaign to raise funds for the establishment of a Czech language chair at a-Texas university, President Chervenka reported that plans are underway to launch an advertising campaign to help raise the balance of the $500,000 fund which is nearing the half - way mark.

Next Executive Committee meeting of CESAT is scheduled for Saturday, April 11 at the SPJST Hall in Taylor.

Czech Heritage Society Of Texas Meeting/Seminar The Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce in Fayette County is hosting a Czech Genealogy Seminar at the SPJST Lodge No. 1 Hail on March 7, 1987 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The registration fee for the seminar will be $2.

Persons from Fayette and surrounding counties interested in Czech culture, heritage, language and genealogy are urged to attend. There will be performances by two groups of the Fayetteville Beseda Dancers and the Fayetteville Czech Singers. A Czech lunch will be sold at the hall.

Speakers for the seminar, who are members of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, are Leo Baca -Czech Passenger Lists, Robert Janak -Cemeteries of Czech Texans, Albert Blaha -- Research in Czechoslovakia, Marlyn Hrncir -- Czech Catholic Records, Dr. Ben Merrick -- Czech Brethren Records, Dorothy Bujnoch -Texas Czech Census and Courthouse Records, Jeanne Jacques -- Your Family History. A history of the Beseda will be given by Mrs. Helen Mikus of Fayetteville. She will also have a Czech exhibit.

The Czech Heritage Society of Texas will have a regular meeting at 1 p.m. A Fayette County Chapter of the Society will be formed at that time.

State King & Queen In Christmas Parade On December 16th, the SPJST State King and Queen participated in the Temple Christmas Parade. They were just one of the 97 entries in the annual parade. State King John See and Queen Sherry Michka rode in a convertible provided by LaVon Fox of Temple. Marchers escorting the car were Youth Leader Rose Harvell, Carl Macek, Jason and Michael Harvell of Lodge 24. Also marching were Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky, David and Melanie Koslovsky of Lodge 47.'

This was one of the four public appearances that the State Royalty is encouraged to do during their reign.

John is the son of John and Dorothy See of Lodge 9, Snook. Sherry is the daughter of Jerry and Linda Michka of Lodge 74, Lovelady.

Memoriam

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Jaro No. 130, Dallas and the entire membership, express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of MILDRED KAMAS, who passed away January 15, 1987, at the age of 64.

Sister Kamas was born November 14, 1922 in Ennis, Texas to the late Joseph and Mary Pluner Skrivanek.

She married Ed Kamas on May 10, 1942 in Dallas and to this union two daughters were born, Carol Jane Benjamin of Aiken, South Carolina and Rita Gayle Minsheu, of Forny, Texas.

Sister Mildred was active in SPJST Youth Club, PTA and Scouting. She was an exceptional artist and enjoyed all types of crafts and needlework.

She also enjoyed outdoor activities including camping, fishing and boating.

Her health began to deteriorate about 20 years ago, but she kept going because of the love of her family and friends. Her treasures were her 4 grandchildren, Robert and Sarah Benjamin and John and Lauren Minsheu.

Services were held at Restland Funeral Chapel.

May our departed sister rest in eternal peace.

Of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge No. 89, Rosebud, Texas wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of RALPH HANSFORD GRIGGS, who died November 24, 1986, in a Temple hospital. He was a faithful member of Lodge No. 89.

Services were held for Brother Griggs, age 72, at Temple Brethren Church with the Dr. Mark Labaj and Rev. Larry Koslovsky officiating and burial with full military honors at Woodland Cemetery at Rosebud, Texas.

Brother Griggs was born in Long Beach, California. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1940 until his retirement May 4, 1960. While in the Navy, he traveled to the South Pole with Admiral Richard Byrd in 1946 and 1955.

Brother Griggs married Annie Hering of Rosebud, Texas on July 16, 1952 in Ocker Brethren Church.

Following his retirement from the Navy, he worked at Olin E. Teague Veterans Center until his retirement in 1981.

He served in several offices at Temple Brethren Church and taught Sunday School there.

Survivors include his widow, Annie Hering Griggs of Temple; two sons, Ray Hering Griggs and Ross Alan Griggs, both of Temple, Texas; one sister, Dorothy Jacquot of Topeka, Kansas.

Harper - Talasek Funeral Home of Temple was in charge of arrangements.

Brother Hughes was born in Leesville and was a Navy veteran in WWII Pacific theater. He was a former Bell County deputy sheriff and a member of Little River United Methodist Church.

He was a member of Academy SPJST Lodge No. 177, the Little River - Academy's Lions Club, Zerne Lodge No. 615 AF&AM in Bartlett and the Bartlett Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans Posts.

Survivors include his widow, Acnia Johnson Hughes of Little River Academy; two daughters, Sandra Watson of Houston and Judy Bennett of Little River - Academy; two brothers, L.V. Hughes of Houston and Granville Morgan of Oklahoma, also three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

Friday, February 6 in Little River United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Johnson officiating. Burial was in Wilson Valley Cemetery.

Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Sam Houston No. 73, Seymour, Texas, in behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepeSt and sincere sympathy to the family of our departed brother RUDOLPH A. "DOC" HRNCIRIK, of 510 South Stratton, Seymour, Texas, who died Friday at the Seymour Hospital, at the age of 87.

Rosary was held at 6 p.m. Saturday at Seymour Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral mass was celebrated at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Harry Fisher officiating. Burial was in the SPJST Cemetery.

Brother Hrncirik was born in Shiner (Lavaca County), Texas,on December 10, 1899. He moved with his family to Baylor County in the early 1900s.

On May 31, 1927 he married Bertha E. Mazac in Seymour. She died on April 7, 1986. Later that year, in November 1927, he became a faithful member of the Seymour SPJST Lodge No. 73, was elected president in January 1951 and held this position at the time of his death in 1987, having been a member for 60 years and president for 35 years.

Brother Hrncirik farmed in Baylor County until his retirement in 1966.

He was also a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Lillie Mae Novak of Seymour; two sons, Junior and Joe Hrncirik, both of Seymour; three brothers, Emil and Albert Hrncirik, both of Seymour, Jerome Hrncirik of Vernon, Texas, nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

I knew in my mind he would never Ever be able to see his dream come true.

But I'm assured he's happily in Heaven with grandma, Just like they were meant to be.

Oh, grandpa! God knows I'll miss you.

But I still love you.

And I'll never forget you...My Grandpa!

Brother Leschber was born in Deltmold to Gus and Erna Thaler Leschber. He served in the Army in Germany during WWII. He retired from Montgomery Ward & Company in 1982 after 35 years of service.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1820 and also a member of SPJST Lodge No. 47.

Survivors include his widow, Mary Leschber of Temple; one son, Dennis Leschber of San Antonio; one daughter, Sharron Pate of Lawton, Oklahoma; one brother, Alfred Leschber of Thorndale and eight grandchildren.

A memorial has been established at the First Lutheran Church.

In Memoriam died Walter J. Bartek, Sr. Wednesday in a Baytown hospital. He was born August 21, 1913, in Temple,

Texas. He operated a cafe in Temple with his wife until moving to Baytown 43 years ago.

A retired Exxon welder, he was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and was active in Boy Scouts, Lutheran Brotherhood, Cedar Bayou Volunteer Fire Department, Christian Service League, SPJST Lodge No. 156, and the Baytown Senior Citizens.

Survivors include his wife, Lydia Bartek of Baytown; one son, Walter J. Bartek, Jr. of Spring; one daughter, Mary Bartek of Houston; one brother, Charley Bartek of Zabcikville; five sisters, Wilma Younts and Antonie Zucha, both of Cyclone, Annie Doskocil of Zabcikville, Janie Jecmenek of Temple and Bessie Kleypas of Marlin; four grandchildren, Todd Eric, Jo Lynn, Paul Leon and Todd Anthony Bartek.

Visitors were received at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday for Brother Walter J. Bartek, Sr., 73, of Baytown, Texas, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Rev. Charles Probst officiating. Burial was at Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers were Robert Gold, Jim Tapp, Charles Albright, Eddie A. Foster, Larry Miller and Clyde Grayson.

Honorary pallbearers were the Christian Service League of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, T.M. Beal, Freddie Friedrich and the Rev. Ed Weatherly.

Services were under the direction of Navarre's Paul U. Lee Funeral Home.

Faced with health - care costs shooting up almost 9 percent each year, companies are passing many of these expenses on to. their workers. For example, a survey--by one of the companies-found that 70 percent of employers use comprehensive medical plans, which require employes to pay a deductible before any medical expenses are reimbursed. In 55 percent of the comprehensive plans, the deductibles are higher than $100. Ten percent of the employers are considering a reduction in medical benefits for retirees. *** It's getting easier for an estimated 500,000 Americans--mostly ast limatics--who suffer severe reactions from sulfites to avoid the chemicals, which are widely used as preservatives. Earlier this year, the Food and Drug Administration banned the use of sulfites in raw fruits and vegetables. Beginning January 9, 1987, warning labels will be required when the chemicals are used in baking and other food processing. Labeling already is required when sulfites are added to packaged foods. Prescription drugs containing sulfites must be labeled starting next June 3rd. And the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has ordered that alcoholic beverages containing sulfites be so labeled by January, 1988.
