Yes, we will and, definitely, shall and must remember a dedicated, devoted, honest, hard - working, loved family individual as well as sincere fraternalist, Brother Otto Hanus, the curator of our SPJST Library, Archives, Museum, who was laid to eternal rest today, Thursday, February 5th at the SPJST Pa yelka Cemetery in Elk (McLennan) County, Texas.

Otto Hanus, 86, of Temple died Monday, February 2, 1987. Services were_held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Wiikirson :Hatch Funeral Chapel with interment in Elk. Brother Hanus. was a member and Czech reporter of SPJST Lodge 66, member of Seaton Choral Club (Lodge 47.), member of Texas Association of Museums, member of RYOS Lodge 109, and was also an inarumental member during_ the 1960 and_ 1980 ?IST _Convent:02S held in Waco. _ include_ his _ widow, hda zianus of Waco (residing in a rest '1,-;;;::.,e), three daughters, one son, two sisters, two brothers, 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and a large number of friends.

The family has designated SPJST Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box _100, Temple, Texas 76503 for memorials.

This is most important during the period, January 1 through April 15, 1987 when IRA Contributions can be applied to the previous year (1986), or the current year (1987).

This change to properly report IRA Contributions is mandated

by IRS to verify the transaction through IRS Form 5498 filed by SPJST and the Individual Income Tax Form 1040 Filing Return.

District V Meeting March 8, 1987 District V will hold its annual spring business meeting on March 8, 1987 at Lodge No. 88 in Houston.

The officers of District V urge the membership of all the lodges that are in District V to attend.

There will be entertainment by the Lodge 88 Orchestra and Choral Group.

The noon meal will be served beginning at 11:30 a.m.; price $4 per plate and mini - plate $2.50. The Sunshine Club at Lodge 88 will be serving pies and cakes.

Sister Dorothy Pflughaupt, District V youth counselor, will be conducting the regular youth meeting. She is inviting all the youth, who attend the meeting, to participate in a Pizza Party after the meeting.

We look forward to seeing all the members of the various lodges in District V at Lodge 88 on March 8th.

Lodge No. 88 Houston Dear Brothers and Sisters: The dance held on January 24th featuring the Knights of Dixie was enjoyed by a large crowd.

Make your plans to attend the Anniversary Celebration on Sunday, February 15th. A braised - beef dinner will be served starting at 11 a.m. Adult plates will be $4 and mini - plates will be $2.50. The Birthday Club Sisters will appreciate pastry donations.

Sister Sophie Larriza passed away on January 26, 1987, at the age of 84 years. Graveside services were held on January 28th with interment at Brookside Memorial Park. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Sister Lamza.

The District V spring meeting will be held on Sunday, March 8th at Lodge No. 88. More details about the meeting will be provided in the near future.

San Antonio SPJST Lodge 133 plans to celebrate the 70th anniversary of our lodge on March 15th. Details of our celebration are not complete at this time; we hope to have all the information by our next meeting which will be on February 15th.

Dear Members and Friends: Hello Everybody! I hope all of you, who have been under the weather, have been able to shake off your ailments and are well on the road of a busy new year. All the holiday, activities are just happy memories now and most of us are striving for even a better year in 1987. The world is still a wonderful place, always so very much to be done and always with plenty of room at the top.

The motto of my high school graduating class was: "Aim High and Do Your Best". That reminds me to remind all Lodge 172 members to turn in a record of work in charitable areas and community involvement for 1986.

If you just tell me how much of your time you gave to charity and how much money it cost you, it would be very helpful for me to compile a report of all the members of Lodge 172 to be turned in to the Supreme Lodge so they can compile a report of all the SPJST lodges in Texas. Please do your best and PLEASE no later than April 15th.

Our regular January meeting was well attended. There were 43 members present. Our District V Director Brother Jerry Prochazka, conducted the installation of Lodge 172 officers for 1987. Sister Dressler was handy with her camera. I will take a chance that the pictures will be good and will send them to the Vestnik with names of all the officers as soon as possible with a picture of the Entertainment Committee, too.

District V Youth Counselor Dorothy Pflughaupt was present at our meeting and spoke to us about a youth club; we would like to see one started. Thank you, Dorothy, for the encouraging words. We enjoyed having you and your husband, Larry, and the children.

District V Director Jerry Prochazka spoke briefly about all the good things happening in the SPJST. We were also honored by the presence of President of the Supreme Lodge, Brother Howard Leshikar. He also had a lot of good things to say about the things that are taking place and more are to come up in the future in the SPJST. We really had the brass with us this time. We hope they liked us and will come, again. We had the District V youth counselor, District V director, and Supreme Lodge President, all at one time. We are glad you all came and come, again.

We will have a Czech Festival in Pasadena at Lodge 172 for the first time. This festival will be sponsored by 3 organizations, namely; The Czech Heritage Society, The San Jacinto Czech Club, and SPJST Lodge No. 172. The big day of the festival will be on Sunday, November 8, 1987. This festival will actually get started on Saturday, November 7, for those who have the Czech Heritage Society meeting on Saturday, may as well go to the dance on Saturday night if they wish and, of course, many others will join you. Variety music will be played Saturday night for the dance. There will be entertainment all day Sunday during the festival with many groups from other areas participating. Much talent will be displayed with all kinds of booths and games, plus plenty of food and drinks. Watch for details in the Vestnik and start making plans to come.

180, Burleson Meeting

Dear Members and Friends: With the year _1986 in the past now and getting welLinto the_year_1987, we should all work at making it a good year. Our lodge will be having several big events this year, so everyone should stay busy.

Our January 20 meeting was called to order by President Louis Grochoske. All present recited the Pledge of Allegiance and remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed members and friends.

The minutes of our last meeting were approved as read. The treasurer's report was also accepted and all correspondence was read.

All chairpersons' reports were also given and discussed.

We, the members and friends, wish to extend our heartfelt sympathy to the families of Hattie Marie Sulak, member of Lodge 180, who passed

away 'January 17, 1987. She was a native of West, but resided in Ft. Worth for the past 34 years. 4She_will be missed but may she rest in peace.

Also, we the Simmank family and friends, wish to extend our sympathy to the family of Otto John Simmank, Sr., of Columbus, Texas (formerly of Houston), born in Bell County, Texas who passed away January 30, 1987. He had been ill for several months. Burial was in Houston on February 2nd. The family also wishes to extend our heartfelt sympathy to Albert and Helen Hejl and family of Rosebud, Texas on the loss of their son - in - law, Waymond Gerza. May they rest in peace.

It was nice to hear that my brother, Raymond's neighbor in Houston recognized my name in the Vestnik as a reporter, so now they pass the Vestnik to Raymond to read about Lodge 180.

The attendance prize was won by Randy Payne. The meeting adjourned to refreshments.

Passing Of An Era

The

Dear Friends/Members: Today is a sad day for the SPJST. Brother Otto Hanus is being buried today. I'll leave the details to others, but I feel campelled to write these words in tribute to a wonderful individual.

The history of the SPJST tells us that Brother Otto began his employment in the Library - Archives Museum area of the SL on 1 March 1970. The rest of his activities are now a part of history and legend. I had personally known Otto since my family's membership at Lodge 66 Waco in the early 60s. We worked together on several large events at Lodge 66, including the staging of two "American - Czech Festivals" at that lodge, plus the organization of the Lodge 66 Choral Group. Later, he literally threw himself into his new position at the SL with the same force, energy, and enthusiasm that had characterized his lifelong employment positions.

Whenever he was given an assignment in the SL, all you would see was a "puff of smoke."

Otto was gone, and returned shortly after with the completed item. He was a source of constant amazement because of his ingenuity and many talents. Everyone loved and respected him. He didn't know what a clock was.

You could always depend on him -- no doubt about it.

Otto will be missed. Yes, he will be replaced, but it won't be easy. When the Good Lord made Otto, He threw away the pattern. I have many personal fond memories of him that I'll never forget.

My family sends our sincere condolences to Otto's family and relatives. We had let it be known that we would attend the funeral services, but Dorothy was scheduled for surgery at almost the same time as the funeral.

A devoted SPJST advocate, and worker has passed on. His place in the annals of the SPJST is permanently etched. God rest his soul!

Ladies' Circle Of Lodge 92, Ft. Worth Dear Members and Friends: The Ladies' Circle met January 13 with 33 ladies, 6 men and 3 guests; they were Sue Sims, Donna Thompson and Mary Pavey.

The officers for 1987 were \,-stalled and are: President -- Dona Hubenak, Vice President -- Betty Billington (who was absent and Clara Cohen stood in for her), Secretary -- Clara Marchioni, Treasurer -- Evelyn _Spacek. We thank Mary Powers for installing our new officers.

President Hubenak welcomed all members and guests.

Minutes were read and approved.

Thank you cards were read , from S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I in Taylor for the donation from the Circle, from Ann Sinek, Betty Phillips, Frank and Myrtle and Annie Langer's daughter thanking the Ladies' Circle for the cards sent to her mother and father.

Treasurer's report was read and approved.

Sunshine Chairman Lillie McMillen reported Roberta Peters had been in the hospital; a card was sent to her and a sympathy card was sent to Rose Nieswiodomy (her sister - in - law passed away), and birthday card to Bennie Bartek. Marie Prill was on the sick list and, being a hostess for the meeting, guest Mary Pavey very graciously filled in for her. Thank you, Mary.

Hostesses for the February 10 meeting will be Josephine Prochaska, Lillie McMillen, Maggie Konecny and Janie Allen.

A motion was made to elect a second vice president in _case neither the president and/or vice president could be present. Motion passed and Clara Cohen was nominated and elected.

The vote was unanimous.

Joyce Tesar announced there would be a youth dance on February 14th.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to all January birthday members, Julia Dueser, Annie Langer, Eva Dockery, Ed Simmank, Joe Gregory and Frank Kovar.

The door prize for February was donated by Maggie Konecny.

88 Czech Concert Orchestra. lodge

Muzikanti, Pojdte Hrat [Musicians, Come and Play] This is the name of a piece which was played after a break during dances at halls in south Texas in the 1800 early 1900s. Beer was not served in the hall so, at the break everyone would go outside for refreshments.

At the end of the break time, one musician - usually a coronet or trumpet player would get back on stage and start playing "Muzikanti, Pojdte Hilt." The others would finish their beverages and return to the stage to join in. Well, the holiday break is over and the first LODGE 88 Czech Concert Orchestra rehearsal for 1987 was Wednesday, January 21st.

(That's the first Musician) the orchestra is looking for more members.

We know that there are many inactive Czech musicians, for they talk to us at the various events where we play (there is a Lodge 88 officer who played clarinet in high school). But

when asked to join us they claim that it has been too long, or that they have given their instrument away.

Length of time since you last played is not important - some of our current members had not played in 15 years when they joined the orchestra.

As for lack of instruments, this is a good time to pick up good buys in pawn shops and/or garage sales. rental Another place is the departments of music supply companies. We need a second drummer, because the main one works in construction and cannot be at all of our concerts and rehearsals. Also one of our prime needs is an alternate piano player which has an instrument provided.

This is a fun organization whose purpose is to promote interest in Czech Music, so we invite everyone who likes music (seniors, the middle aged, yuppies and college and/or high school band students) to visit our rehearsals on Wednesday nights at 7:30 p.m.

We regret the loss of Mary Klobedans, Sophie Lamza and Mary Vacek. Mary, Sophie and Mary will be missed by our staff and other residents.

Sorry to hear about the loss of Paul De Lion of San Antonio, who was the brother of Mary Trevino, LVN. Monday afternoon, January 5 and 19, Betty Seiler_came from the library to show a movie and helped with the popcorn.

On Monday, January 12, the Hope Lutheran_Church of Beasley came to have services and brought cookies and had a social afterwards. They also brought prizes for bingo. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon.

The KCs came to play bingo Tuesday evening, January 13 and 27, with the residents. The residents enjoyed the bingo and visiting with the ones present.

Thursday afternoon, January 15, Garland and Julie Huryta and Mary Gaffinet with the Fort Bend Humane Society brought dogs for therapy for the residents.

Saturday afternoon, January 17, Willie Mae Tielke, Freda Klawitter and Dora Guttenberger entertained _their mother, Dorothea Bockhorn with a birthday party. A few relatives and the other residents attended.

Thursday, January 22, Larry Ognoski, Fred Gerke and George Lolley provided music and singing for the residents. Everyone had a great time.

Take Advantage Of All The Activities On The Local, District and State Levels

Youth,

From The District Youth Counselor District II Skating Party This Sunday The District II skating party will be held this Sunday, February 15 at 5 p.m., at the Skate. Haven in Temple.

Many prizes plus bonuses will be given if you wear something red or pin on a red Valentine. I hope to see you there.

District II spring meeting will be held on March 22 at Lodge No 74, Lovelady. The regular business meeting will be held with the election of District II officers, a short youth program, plus other outdoor activities for the youth. A late afternoon meal will be furnished by District II and Lodge 74, Lovelady.

We are asking each family to bring a

February 11, 1987--VESTNiK/9 sweet or salad or vegetable; some drinks will be furnished and door prize drawings for youth and adult members.

We will have one or two _buses available if you_would prefer to ride on the bus. Contact your lodge president before _March 1, because we MUST have a count on how many plan to ride in the bus by MARCH 1st. The youth through ages 16 may ride free; adults (ages 17 through 64) will pay $10, and adults 65 and over will pay $5 per person. A bus will leave from Taylor and possibly one from Temple, but for now, we_need to know how many of you are interested in riding on a bus.

Final results and time of departure after the March 1 reports from local lodge presidents.

The weather has been nice and warm and soon e‘ervthing will turn green and beautiful. This is my favorite season of the year.

Lodge 6 members taking Christmas gifts to the West Rest Haven on December 20, 1986.

Lodge 6 YC Anticipates Good Times Ahead Dear Members and Friends: The youth club meeting of Cottonwood Lodge 6 was held February 1 at 2:30 p.m. with a good attendance and one guest; come back again!

Our youth clubbers brought cakes to West Rest Haven on February A, donated clothes to Goodwill, cookies to VA_Hospital, and are working on Valentines for the rest home residents.

We also will_ make Valentine posters.

The Valentine party will be held February 13 and the youth may bring their friends; the adult members and friends are also invited, so all of you come and have fun. We will have hamburgers, chips, dips, _ sweets, drinks, plus exchange Valentines and have games. Be sure to join us for an enjoyable evening.

On February 14 is St. Paul Valentine's Sweetheart Ban q uet which requires reservations; tickets are per

plate, $3.50 for children under 7 and it is a barbecue plate and dessert.

The youth members are still selling get well, birthday and sympathy cards, also knives. I have received new

Whistling snowmen at the Christmas program.

10/VESTNiK—Wednesday, February 11, 1987 Chriltrnas party on the 22nd. We played bingo for prizes only , no money exchanged. Each member brought a gag gift which was exchanged. This was a fun game. The players were in a circle after each selected a gift. Mrs. Siler read the Christmas project and every time the word "and!' was read, the players would pass their gift to the one to the right. When the story ended, each player had a _gift and then they could_open the package. Many unusual surprises were revealed and all had a good laugh. December 23rd several members made a trip through town to view the. Christmas lights, followed by an eat out at Pizza Inn. January 3rd -- Bowling trip to Ayers Bowling Lanes; on The 16th to Nueces County Junior Livestock Show in Robstown; a regular monthly meeting on the 17th and an eat out at Wendy's;

a movie trip on the 24th.

Thr February, charity project is taking cookies and cakes to Westwood Nursing Home. Many more charity projects are being planned for the other months.

I want to say "many thanks" to our State Youth Director Sue Meadows for the good work she is doing in the Youth Department, especially the Vestnik Projects every month. At the regular monthly meetings, the members work the projects. The first thing_I'm asked, "Are we working the projects?" all of them hurry and take the copies and get to work. Frances McDonald makes the copies for which we all are thankful. The club has fifteen active members, who I'm very proud of.

Lodge No. 117 Youth Club Robstown

Dear Readers: The Robstown Youth Club_has had several busy months and will continue to do more charity projects in the coming months.

September 26th and 27th Bayfest 1986 and Circus on October 11th. A regular meeting was held on October 18th and a very successful Halloween party with 15 youth clubbers, 8 visitors and 3 adults. A movie trip on November 8th was _ taken. At the regular monthly meeting on November 22nd, the youth decorated straw wreaths; these were taken to S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville, also g, g.y wrapped gifts were_ given to the No. II home. A movie trip was made on the 22nd. _ December is always our busiest month for _charity projects and activities. Christmas wreaths were also taken to Westwood Nursing Home on December 12th. A trip was taken to see the _ Harbor Lights on the 5th, Christmas Tree Forest on the 12th, a movie trip on the 13th, and a regular meeting was held_on the 20th with all the youth working _ the._ December Vestnik Projects. Dear Members, We had our Lodge 66 Youth Club meeting on January 18. There were 24 members present and we had one visitor, Angela Hanley. Angela, we would like for you to come visit us, again. We also had a new member at our meeting, Justin Engelke. Justin, we are looking forward to having you in our club.

On Tuesday, February 10, we are going to Shulmann 5 Theaters.

Everyone is to meet 15 minutes before the first movie.

For our February meeting, we are to make Valentine boxes with goodies in them. They will be judged and then given as door prizes.

Our first place door prize was won

We held our Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club meeting on Sunday, February 1, 1987 with 5 members present. We had three guests Sharon, Samantha and Susan Hrabal.

Correspondence was read from Barbara and Edward Hykel.

The club took cakes to the Rest Home_ on Wednesday, February 4th.

We will be taking Valentines to them (residents) on Friday, February 13 at 7 p.m. We will also have a Valentine party February 13 beginning at 8 p.m.

We will have hamburgers, chips and sweets for refreshments. The club will furnish the meat and hamburger buns and everyone is asked to bring the rest of the "fixings" for our hamburgers, chips and sweets. I hope to see you there.

There will be akite - flying contest at our next meeting, which will be Sunday, March 1st.

Birthdays for February are Stephanie Mynar_and Celia Dobecka. I will bring the cake to the March meeting.

The second meeting of Lodge 133 Youth Club had six youth in attendance.

We made sack puppets, and learned about our United States Flag, sang songs and played a bowling game. We also started a scrapbook._ Some youth enjoyed playing bingo with the adults after our youth meeting.

Open Letter To Lodge 133 YC

On December 21 was the opening of Lodge No. 133 San Antonio Youth Club. Lodge 133 is open to boys and girls of all ages. At the first meeting we made name tags. On the name tags they wrote their age and their interest.

During the meeting, they made reindeers out of candy canes and pipe cleaners. Afterward, they saw a puppet show and played games such as "Duck, Duck Goose," and "The Farmer and the Dale;" then, they sang songs for the_SPJST lodge.

Before the close of the meeting they elected officers. The president for Lodge 133 Youth Club is Charlie Kutil, secretary is Jeffrey Spacek. The song leaders are Leona and Nicholas Morrisey and the game leader is Robbie Popp.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Lodge No. 30 Youth Club met on Sunday, February 1, 1987 at the Taiton Community Center.

With the absence of our president and vice president, Youth Leader Georgia Dorotik opened the meeting at 2:30 p.m. The pledge and prayer were recited.

We discussed dates for the district VI meeting, camp and YAD. A workshop was held at the home of Georgia Dorotik on Wednesday, January 28 to make Valentine favors for the rest home.

Everyone is asked to make a kite for a craft project for the month of March.

A program on "Spring" will be held.

Brother Krizak was a member of the Weimar United Church of Christ, the Churchmen's Brotherhood, SPJST Lodge No. 16, RVOS, and Senior Citizens.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Rutherford; four daughters, Jane Shannon of Houston, Linda sutler of Old Ocean, Texas, Gale Rutherford of McDade, Charlotte Ponder of Houston; three sisters, Retta Preston of Austin, Tommie Christensen of El Campo, Vinnie Ashman of Conroe; 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 31st at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Newby Funeral Home in Elgin with the Reverend Steve Buckland, pastor of the McDade Baptist Church, officiating. Interment was in the McDade Cemetery.

Pallbearers William were Christensen, Keith Wayne Christensen, H.J. Plummer, David Christensen, Herman Cary and Kenneth Cary. Honorary pallbearer was Leon Justice.

Teenage girls are especially eager to master English and Viennese waltzes, foxtrot, polka, jive and tango in regal surroundings worthy of balls held during the Austro - Hungarian empire.

Libuse Pinterova, a teacher at the prestigious Savarin palace in downtown Prague, said tickets for girls are snapped up when they go on sale each January for the following September.

More persuasion is needed to get teenage boys to don full evening dress and take to the dance floor.

Advertisements in newspapers and at cinemas, plus leaflets circulated to schools, precede boys' enrollment every September.

Boys also pay considerably less than girls. Organizers say the price difference exists because the girls' fee includes a seat for their chaperones.

At Prague's Obecni Dum, a typical course of 11 two - hour lessons, two formal dress dances and a grand ball costs about 180 crowns, or $18, for a girl, but only 80 crowns, or $8, for a boy. In 1980, the per capita income was $5,800 a year.

In the past, when boys and girls went to separate schools, the dance lesson often was the place to meet one's first sweetheart. Today, that's not so important. But youngsters are still enthusiastic.

"It's the foundation of social behavior," said 15 - year - old Monika Divisova, who studies nursing.

Jan Pavel, 16 - year - old apprentice bricklayer, said he started dancing "to stop being clumsy" and was glad he joined his friends.

"The boys are different from those we are used to, much more serious," said another teenager who would not give her name. "Actually, mother likes to come more than I do."

Parents and teachers welcome the dancing lessons as an alternative to modern temptations.

"It's better for them to go dancing than to drink or take drugs," a teacher said.

Dance mistress Marie Hartmanova said parents also like the instruction in social graces that is an integral part of lessons.

Miloslav Janous, a dance master who recalls being dragged to lessons by his parents, said the older generation still insists on having offspring learn to dance.

"Even at the height of the disco dancing wave, dancing lessons here are seen as part of general education almost a duty," he said. "Parents will force the boys mercilessly to attend."

But modernity impinged on the tradition that goes back to the Austro Hungarian empire and 19th century nationalists who learned Slavic dances like the polka.

"The children hear the music less, they are deaf" because of disco dancing, Mrs. Hartmanova said.

"The development in the way youngsters move is going downhill and that is alarming," dance master Dusan Konecny recently told the weekly newspaper Maldy Svet.

Konecny said more than 100,000 teenagers attend dancing lessions every year. Czechoslovakia has a population of 15.4 million.

A recent survey about the costs of dresses worn at dancing lessons suggests that some things haven't changed from a hundred years ago.

"It doesn't matter what the price is," a girl identified as Ilona told the daily newspaper Svoboda. "The Main thing is that it be pretty and modern. If my mother doesn't want to buy me something, my dad will always reach into his pocket."
