organization to have a constant flow of new ideas in order that it can remain vibrant and responsive to the constant changes around us.

The major portion of the committees' efforts are devoted to matters that _correspond with their assigned functions. However, the committees are not restricted and can consider and brainstorm any matter that might be in the best interests of the SPJST. _ The Products Committee is charged with matters dealing with marketing and marketing - related areas. This inclades the broad area concerning sales, advertising, developing new products, membership services, and planning the future product needs of the Society.

The Fraternal Activities Committee considers matters dealing with the fraternal programs of the Society. Its responsibilities include items such as the scholarship program, local lodge fraternal programs, fraternal services and various fraternal affairs.

The Financial Planning Committee deals with financial related matters. It studies and makes recommendations on general investment policies, the mortgage loan program, interest rates

New committee appointments were made during the January 1987 Supreme Lodge meeting. The purpose of the committees is to facilitate the flow of business during regular Supreme Lodge meetings. The committees meet prior to each Supreme Lodge meeting and on other occasions if the need arises. The three committees are the Products Committee, the Fraternal Activities Committee and the Financial Planning Committee.

The committees assist the Supreme Lodge by considering matters assigned to them. Each committee then has an opportunity to consider matters in depth and to recommend a well researched course of action. The Supreme Lodge has the benefit of a well thought through course of action on the many complex decisions that must be made at each Supreme Lodge meeting.

An additional benefit derived from the committee approach has been a flow of new ideas.. The smaller_ groups seem to be more conducive to creative ideas.. It is necessary for every

The Bulletin Board for the spring SPJST district meeting dates and times is beginning to fill up and becoming finalized. District officers are urged to send in their dates and plans if they have not done so to date. This is the first issue in February and March and April will be here before we realize it.

We are asking for your cooperation! *** In the last SL meeting there were three committees re - appointed for the 1987 year and they are pictured in this issue. SL Secretary/Treasurer Mikeska has an informative article pertaining to the committees which, he rightfully points out, help the Supreme Lodge speed up their deliberations in the SL quarterly meetings in January, April, July and October of each year. *** It has come increasingly more evident that too many of our members could use more insurance and, especially, is this true of their sons and daughters -- (they are insured with some company with less benefits) which is probably due to some of our sales representatives not following up their prospective leads. Remember SPJST life insurance is a type of insurance second to none! Check your insurance interest rates posted in the Vestnik and then check other insurance, and you will notice that SPJST interest rates are higher in all cases -- Annuity, Universal, and Lone Pay Life. it** You've probably already felt the wrath of cold weather this fall and don't need to be told the effect of wind and cold temperatures--the misery is doubled. It can be deadly, too, because wind combines with low temperature to rob the body of heat faster than the temperature alone would. If this wind chill factor is low enough, frostbite and hypothermia can develop within minutes. Example: When temperature is 35 degrees and wind is 15 mph, the temperature is really 16 degrees. ***

Music fans who spend hours each day wearing those portable stereo headsets with the volume turned up may be doing permanent damage to their_ _ ears, warns _ the National Association for. Hearing and Speech Action. Rock music, for example, can reach a noise level of 110 decibels.

That's louder than a chain saw or a snowmobile, and it's well abase the 80 - decibel level --an alarm - clock ring -that's considered _ potentially hazardous. The risk is even greater with earphones, since the noise is fed directly into the ears. Your headset is too loud if_you must raise your voice to be hard, cannot hear someone less than 2 feet away, nearby speech seems muffled or dull or you have pain or ringing in your ears after taking off_the earphones. To protect your hearing, take frequent breaks from the music and keep the volume down. *** Driving skills begin to deteriorate at age 55,_and can drop sharply _after 75.

But aging drivers frequently can cope safely with the decline by recognizing their limitations and taking _remedial action. With that _ in mind, _ the American Automobile _Association's Foundation for Traffic Safety has published a 15 -_question rating form to _help older drivers assess their own driving skills. For a $2 copy of "Drivers 55 Plus: Test Your Own Performance," contact your local AAA Club or write directly to .the foundation, 2999 Telestar Court, Suite 100, Falls Church, VA. 22042. *** Protect our children.

Are you interested in preparing a special article for the Fraternal Monitor on your Missing Children Program? Forty - six societies are enrolled in the NFCA Protect Our Children program. This is an opportunity to share what your lodges are doing to help this cause.

Contact the Headquarters Office for an outline on how to submit an article. *** Babies at risk. Because they cannot express their needs clearly, infants are especially vulnerable to hypothermia -a drop in deep - body temperature that can be deadly if not detected and remedied promptly -- warns the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. And babies' distress may not be obvious, since hypothermia can develop at relatively mild temperatures. To be on the safe side, NOAA suggests that parents keep the indoor temperature around 72 degrees. Dress the infant in a cap indoors as well as outside, since most body heat is lost from the head. Limit the baby's outdoor exposure during winter months: The smaller the person, the greater the risk of hypothermia. *** Using computers can be a terrific learning experience for children with severe mental or physical handicaps.

Children -- unlike many of their parents and teachers -- don't find the machines intimidating. They can work at their own speed, and the computers will repeat the same exercise as often as necessary, while an adult may tire. Yet finding the appropriate software can be a problem. Help is now available from the Special Education Software Center, a data base funded by the Department of Education. If given a student's particular handicap, age, reading level, type of computer and subject area to be studied, the center will advise what software is available, how much it costs and where to get it.

A change in the Law requires that IRA Contributions must be identified as to the year for which a Deposit is to be applied.

This is most important during the period, January 1 through April 15, 1987 when IRA Contributions can be applied to the previous year (1986), or the current year (1987).

This change to properly report IRA Contributions is mandated

by IRS to verify the transaction through IRS Form 5498 filed by SPJST and the Individual Income Tax Form 1040 Filing Return.

Please make certain that when IRA Contributions are forwarded, that it is clearly noted on the check, or application for what particular year the deposit is to be applied.

IF YOU DO NOT DESIGNATE WHAT YEAR YOUR IRA CONTRIBUTION IS FOR, WE WILL ASSUME IT IS FOR THE YEAR RECEIVED (1987).

From The Vice President's Office IRAs Maintain Their 1986 Deductibility One of the most controversial provisions of the new tax law is the elimination of the IRA deduction for most taxpayers.

The first thing our members should understand is that for the 1986 tax year, nothing has changed. The new IRA regulations do not go into effect until 1987.

You have until April 15, 1987, to make your 1986 contribution, and contributions up to $2,000 for individuals ($2,250 for couples when only one spouse works) will be fully deductible from your 1986 tax bill.

Basically, the new law limits who can deduct an IRA contribution. The deductibility of IRA contributions is reduced or eliminated for taxpayers who are covered under an employer sponsored retirement plan and have income above a certain level.

The following is a review of the new rules: *If you are not covered by _ an employer retirement plan -- you can continue to deduct IRA contributions of $2,000 ($2,250 for married couples if only one spouse works) regardless of your income. *If you have adjusted gross income of less than $40,000 for couples ($25,000 for individuals) -- you can continue to take the _ full IRA deduction even if you participate in an employer retirement plan. *If you participate in an employer retirement plan and have adjusted gross income between $40,000 $50,000 for couples ($25,000 - $35,000 for individuals) -- your tax deduction forIRA contributions is reduced by 10

percent for each $1,000 of income above $40,000 for couples and $25,000 for individuals. For example, a couple with an income level of $41,000 could deduct $1,800 ($2,000 less 10 percent), and a working spouse could deduct $1,800. *If you are covered by an employer retirement plan and have income above $50,000 for couples (35,000 for individuals) -- you can no conger deduct your IRA contributions.

However, taxes continue to be deferred on all the earnings of your IRA. Just remember that after 1986, if you are covered by a pension plan and have income of more than $50,000 as a couple or $35,000 as an individual, you can no longer deduct your IRA contribution.

In conclusion, if the only reason you have been contributing to your SPJST IRA has been for a tax deduction, you should re - evaluate the real purpose of your IRA. You, will find that contributing to your SPJST annuity program, whether it be a qualified (IRA) annuity or a-non - qualified (non - IRA) annuity is an important part of your financial security _- even if you don't receive a tax deduction.

The members of each committee are rotated each year, except for the three chairmen, (the president, vice president and secretary/treasurer) who serve as permanent chairman to give each committee continuity.

As an organization grows and matures, it must contantly look for better ways to conduct its affairs.

There is a general consensus that the committees enable the Supreme Lodge to make better decisions and develop plans for a bright and prosperous future for the Society.

V Meeting

March 8, 1987 District V will hold its annual spring business meeting on March 8, 1987 at Lodge No. 88 in Houston.

The officers of District V urge the membership of all the lodges that are in District V to attend.

There will be entertainment by the Lodge 88 Orchestra and Choral Group.

The noon meal will be served beginning at 11:30 a.m.; price $4 per plate and mini - plate $2.50. The Sunshine Club at Lodge 88 will be serving pies and cakes.

Sister Dorothy Pflughaupt, District V youth counselor, will be conducting the regular youth meeting. She is inviting all the youth, who attend the meeting, to participate in a Pizza Party after the meeting.

We look forward to seeing all the members of the various lodges in District V at Lodge 88 on March 8th.

Lodge 4 Named Committees Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, January 11, 1987 at the Grant Building in Hallettsville with lodge President Annie Vahalik presiding Janell Chudej led the members in the pledge to the U.S. flag.

Resolutions of sympathy were read for our departed members, Otto Holy and Frank Zapalac.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the previous meeting which were approved.

Correspondence was read. Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Youth Leader Gaynelle Chudej reported.

Vice President Gaye Galetka will check with the City of Hallettsville about their._ plans for the Grant Building which is our regular meeting place.

Committees named by President Vahalik and Vice President Galetka were: Resolution --_ Gaynelle Chudej, Vlary Matula, Victoria_ Zak. Audit -- Elsie Mascheck, Alfonse Holly, Patsy Zabransky Entertainment -- Evelyn Holy, Gaynelle Chudej Flag Bearer Gary Chudej Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka gave his report followed by adjournment. Refreshments and lunch were served.

Door prize winner was Evelyn Holy.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, February 8th at the Grant Building beginning at 2 p.m. January, February and March birthdays will be honored.

There will be games with refreshments and lunch to be served as usual.

Members and their families are encouraged to attend.

Lodge 29, Taylor Meeting Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29 held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, January 11th at 4 p.m. with President Melvin Steger presiding at the meeting.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by the_members; we then had roll call of officers.

We had one member, Angeline Martin, join our lodge.

Secretary Michael. Kaiser read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved. We had our treasurer's report given by Brother Machu, Property Committee _report and them our audit report for October, November and December by Sister Edith Shiller.

We had a report that the senior citizens are still having good turnouts at their meetings.

Youth Club Leader Donna Vanecek reported 26 members attended their

They had a thank_ you letter _ from Administrator Frances Schwenker of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. L for the boxes of Kleenex the youth club gave them for Christmas. Youth Leader Donna also thanked Donna Pasemann for helping her with the youth club.

President _ Steger introduced Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas from the Supreme Lodge. He discussed direct billing with the members and after much discussion, we decided to vote on it at our next meeting about how we want to handle it, so we are urging our members to attend the next meeting to see what you want to do.

A motion was made to have a fundraiser for our lodge; a _ dinner is planned for Sunday, March 1st. We will have some type of dinner for the price of $3.50 a plate. We will have cakes or pies to sell and we will need help for that event.

An Audit Committee was appointed; they are Edith Shiller, Donna Pasemann and Dorothy. Hirt.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, February 8th at 4 p.m.

Lodge 63, Sweet Home Meeting Lodge 63 of Sweet Home will hold its monthly meeting on February 15, 1987 at Firemen's Hall in Sweet Home beginning at 1:30 p.m. Following the short meeting, a domino tournament will be held for the members. The two winning members will be eligible to represent Lodge 63 at the State Tournament later in the year.

All members of Lodge 63 are encouraged to participate on February 15 so that our first tournament will be a success.

President Ladis Navratil called the regular Lodge 87 meeting to order Friday evening, January 9th at 7 p.m.

Flag Bearer Lad Zatopek led the lodge in reciting the Pledge_ of Allegiance. A silent tribute was paid to deceased members Raymond D. Collins and Adolph John Hruby. May they rest in eternal peace.

The minutes of our previous meetings in November and December were read and approved as read.

Correspondence was read and discuss'ed.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The Vrazel dance held on Saturday, January 17 was attended by a capacity crowd. It was great to see so many of our members and guests enjoy the music.

The Russ Morgan dance held on Friday, January 23 was well - attended and enjoyed by all.

The Choral Club and Concert Orchestra have resumed their rehearsals in order to prepare for their upcoming performances. These groups are always willing to perform at various functions in an effort to inform people about the SPJST and the Czech heritage.

All members are urged to attend the regular monthly meeting to be held on Monday, February 9 at 7:30 p.m.

Also, the Anniversary Celebration of Lodge No. 88 will be held on Sunday, February 15th. A braised beef dinner will be served starting at 11 a.m. Adult plates will be $4 and mini plates will be $2.50. Bingo will be played from 2 to 4 p.m., followed by a free dance from 5 to 9 p.m. to the music of Ray Jurecka.

Sister Vernie Mary Nona passed away on January 21, 19137 at the age of 79 years. A wake service was held on January 22 with interment at Forest Park Lawndale. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Sister Nona.

Houston Lodge 142 Celebrates Christmas Dear Members: Lodge 142 Houston held their Christmas party on December 19, 1986 at 7:30 p.m. Santa made his yearly visit to greet all the boys and girls. He gave bags of goodies and handed out gifts to the children.

Lodge_ 142 Youth Club presented a play which was entitled, "T'was The Night Before Christmas." They all performed very well and it was enjoyed by all. _ Music was provided by "The Legends." Their variety of country music is very entertaining.

Lodge 189 Donates $100 To Charity A Christmas dinner was held December 14th at Ramada Inn in College Station, Texas. The membership of Bryan - College Station lodge gathered there at approximately 12:30 p.m. After a delicious meal, the quarterly meeting followed.

Under new business., there was. a discussion of contributing to the local Cheer Fund. It was decided we would contribute $100 this year.

Congratulations were sent out to Debbie. and Danny Sikorski on the birth of their son, Jared Lee. Guests present at the meeting were introduced, namely, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Leshikar, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Trcalek, and Mr.. and Mrs. Guy Huffman and family. _ Mr. Leshikar spoke to the membership after he installed the 1987 lodge officers.

A door prize was donated by Ernest and Billie Wentrcek and was won by Matthew Huffman.

I do—apologize for being so late in my report this time. It seems like the Christmas season sort of crept up on me this year, and then it was a little procrastination on my part after the holidays. I realize it's a little late to wish you a happy Holiday Season, but my sincere wishes for all of you are that this new year will hold nothing but the good things in life for each of you.

Good health is certainly at the top of my list for everyone. After hearing of all the illnesses last year, it makes one really appreciate good health even more.

Many times a person who has gone through a tough time fighting an illness will make the remark that they would trade all their material things for good health.

Our Christmas meeting was held at the Northlake Wyatts Cafeteria on December 4th. President Anne Zvolanek opened the meeting with the pledge to our flag and special welcome to our guests visiting from Czechoslovakia. The guests were introduced as follows: Mrs. Ludmila Mnackova, Mrs. Jarmila Bonzetova, Mrs. Anna Hofman, Mr. Vaclav Hofman, Mrs. Sidney Bridewell, Mrs. Billie Elie, Jerry Kohn, Joe Vik, Bob Zvolanek, Roy Alholm, Frank Noska, Gilbert Kalich, Bob Cunningham, Phil Reames, Charlie Kocian and Frank Houzvicka.

When everyone finished their lunch, President Zvolanek resumed the meeting. Mary Sebestik read the minutes of the November meeting.

Sister Alice Roberts, secretary, was not with us due to the illness of her husband. Treasurer Vicki Kohn gave her report. There was a donation to our Circle from Mary Kubacak in memory of her husband, John. Mary Sebestik also read the correspondence in absence of Helen Vrla Jr. There were Christmas cards from Czechoslovakia available for purchase if anyone wished to have these special cards.

Membership Chairman Bertha Malik reported we have another new member. She is the daughter of Vlasta Jurcik. We welcome her to our Circle.

Greetings were relayed to us from Frances Konakovsky, Hattie Ground, Rose Noska, Evelyn Trojacek, Anna King and Alice Roberts. It was reported that Sister Hattie Hamusek was in a convalescent center, but as of this report I am sorry to have to tell everyone of Hattie's death.

There was no old business to discuss. Under new business it was announced that Lodge 88 from Houston (SPJST) would present a Czech Play in January if there were enough people interested.

Bertha Podhrasky and Mildred Chervenka told us about the Podluza.n group from Czechoslovakia who performed at the Sokol here in Dallas.

Bertha Podhrasky also announced the Sokol Christmas party to be held December 21st starting at 1 p.m. Our Circle will contribute towards this party.

Sunshine Report: Adelle Vlk sent a sympathy card to Libbie Smith. Libbie Elsik sent a get well card to Tom Roberts.

There were no hostesses for this month, but Mary Sebestik reminded everyone that we will have NO meeting in January. Please bring a covered dish to our February meeting.

The December birthday celebrants were numerous this time. They were Lillian Spain, Floy Pokladnik, Frances Sparks, Justine Pokladnik, Frances Barfield, Lillian Kaska, Ann Skrabanek, Bessie Reames, Adela Lesikar, Agnes Mach, Vicki Kohn, Linda Kartous, Evelyn Cechan, Florence Perressenyi, Mary Kubacak and Agnes Finch. Our Birthday Card Chairman Bessie Kalich had a lot of cards to address. "Happy Birthday" was sung for all our December celebrants.

Our Telephone Committee was, once again, recognized for the good job they are doing. They are Rose Kopecek, Aggie Mach, Lillian Graeser, Hattie Ground, Mary Sebestik and Anne Zvolanek.

Announcements were made regarding the American - Czech Cultural Society meeting of January 26th at SPJST Lodge 84, and the Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council's Christmas party at the Catholic Czech Club on December 11th. Our Circle will retain the same delegates to the Czech Cultural Society this year.

At our Christmas party this year, we decided to give the money contributions towards the Czech Chair Project. Liddie Pavelka suggested we make a contribution, annually, towards this chair. It was voted on and it will indeed be one of our projects to contribute towards a worthy cause.

Mildred Chervenka brought greetings from the Czech ambassador who will be visiting Dallas in the near future.

We enjoyed singing Christmas carols. Yours truly played the piano while Mildred Chervenka led us in singing.

President Anne Zvolanek presented her officers and committee chairmen gifts. We certainly appreciate this, but we must also give much credit to Anne for the excellent job she has done this past year as our president. She certainly goes out of her way to make our Circle so wonderful and encouraging it to grow. We have gained several new members this past year as I have been reporting.

President Zvolanek thanked everyone for coming to the Christmas party and wished each of us a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. She thanked Vicki Kohn for the peppermint candy canes, Dorothy Reznik for bringing the flag for the officers' table, and she herself brought the Christmas centerpiece. Zdenka Skotak passed around her delicious rum balls.

News of our members --- We are sorry to report the death of Frankie Laznovsky, brother of Libbie Smith.

Otto Graeser, Jr., son of Otto and Lillian Graeser, recently graduated from Amber University of Dallas, Texas. Otto received his Masters Degree in Business Administration, graduating with academic distinction.

Jerry and Vickie Kohn went to Las Vegas to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on November 4th. They are to be congratulated for this special occasion.

Since we are now into a brand new year, I would like to send my report with this message which was in a card we received from our dentist, Nace Formagus, Jr.: `Once upon a time, in a world so long ago everyone was happy and would often tell you so."

They smiled at one another, gave help when it was needed; taught the children how to love and never felt defeated.

They would say, "Hey, thanks for being who you really say you are;" treated rich and poor alike, made friends with those afar.

Today sometimes we fail to see that we are rich as well; as blessed as those so long ago who knew the meaning well.

They knew the riches we desire dwell within us all.

It's not a question who we are, how great, how big, how small.

Do we have love and joy and kindness? We need no one to tell us so.

Let's give ourselves, our hearts, our minds and help each other grow.

Kollar (1793 - 1852) Jan

This commendatory article was put together to honor the great Slovak poet and writer Jan Kollar at the occasion of the 135th anniversary of his death in the latter part of January 1852. Kollar was born in the village of Mo govce not far from Turcansky SvatSr Martin, in the District known at that time as Ture'ansk y stolice on 29th of July, 1793. His family was of the Protestant faith and the elder Kollar was a mayor of the community in Jan's early youth. After elementary schooling he was sent to study to the town of Kremnica, from where he transferred, after a few years, to the Protestant Lyceum in Bariska Bystrica. After graduation he studied theology and philosophy at the Protestant Lyceum in Bratislava (Pre§purk) while working part-time as a supervisor at that city's Evangelical orphanage. ---Lyceum (plural Lycea) was a certain type of gymnasium, which in turn is a school of higher learning. The name itself originated in Greece.

There was a certain gymnasium called Lyceum near Athens, where the great philosopher Aristotle taught in the Antic age. --- Jan Kollar returned to Banska Bystrica in 1815 as a private teacher but at the end of September 1817 left for the University of Jena in present East Germany to further his theological studies. His two years' stay there formulated the whole of his future life. The nationalist and patriotic currents at that time among the German students, together with Goethe's type of idealist philosophy and romantic history, made a powerful impression on young Kollar and strengthened his earlier decision to work as much as possible for the national awakening of the people in the old country. He first of all observed quite a few Slavic place names in that part of Germany, remnants of the past Slavic habitation in the region, which was centuries ago forcibly Germanized. He met, in Lobeda in 1818, Fridericke (Bedfi g ka) Wilhelmina "Minna" Schmidt, the daughter of a Protestant pastor, who besides being his Platonic affection, became the in-

She was thus a symbol or a living model for the Slavic Goddess Slavy dcera (Daugther of Slava). --- The word Slava, besides being the first name Slavomira or Slava, means also a Glory. --- According to some sources certain forefathers in Schmidt family from the mother's side were Sorbish (Wendish).

As mentioned above, Jan and Frieda met in 1818, Kollar was 25 years old at that time. He left the charming university city of Jena in 1819 and returned via Prague, with a stop there to visit his friends and many acquaintances, to Slovakia.

He was then consecrated in the historical mining town of Banska tiavnica as the Evangelical priest and was given a Slovak parish in Budapest, the Capitol city of Hungary. Although he remained there until 1849, his life was very difficult there because of the constant conflicts between Slovaks and Hungarians and also Germans. His beloved Frieda could not, possibly for these reasons, bring herself to move there until 1835. It was thus sixteen years after they met when she consented to marry him; Jan Kollar was now 41 years old. In 1841 and 1844 he made two study trips to Italy, where he indulged in quite a bit of romantic theorizing which dealt among the other things with life of the ancient Slavic people in this area. In 1849 he was named at first a state advisor in the Slavic matters in the Hungarian part of Habsburg's Empire and later in the same year he was selected as Professor of Slavic Antiquities at the University of Vienna. He died there on 24th of January 1852 at the age of 58 and half years. In 1904 his body was to Prague and re-interred there at the famous Slavin cemetery at fabled Vykhrad.

Kollar's first poetic work titled Bane (Poems) were published in 1821 in Praha (Prague) with the help and advice of Josef Jungmann (1773-1847), the leading resurrector of the Czech nation. This collection expresses a stirring desire to serve the motherland and to help the oppressed Slavic Nations. In the early years of his difficult priestly activities in Budapest, Kollar became an author of a volume of sonnets Slavy dcera (The Daughter of Slava), a book which continued to grow throughout most of his life.

The first edition written in trochees contained 150 sonnets which were divided into 3 parts of 50 _sonnets each. Each part is named for a river, once Slavic but later lost, partly or entirely to the Slays.

---The river which is lost completely to Slays is Saale (Sala) which starts southwest of the Czech city of As, the most western point of Czechoslovakia, and flows north through Jena, Merseburg, Halle before emptying itself into Elbe (Labe) south of Magdeburg. Saale (Sala) is entirely in Germany; it starts south of the town of Hof in West Germany, enters East Germany north of that city and flows through that country into Elbe (Labe). --- Slavy dcera (The Daughter of Slava) is opened by the magnificent prologue in hexameters, a moving lament for the past glory and present oppression of the Slays. In these sonnets the poet is shown as meeting the daughter of Slava and falling in love with her. Kollar's love sonnets are influenced by Petrarch (Francesco Petrarca, Italian poet, who died in 1374), and the senti-

ment of love in his posey merges with that of patriotism as a symbol of the latter. Yet Kollar looks forward to a time of future greatness, once the Slavic nations achieve cultural unity, which in turn will usher in a golden age for the rest of humanity. The second edition of Slavy dcera (The Daughter of Slava) was substantially enlarged; the sonnets increased to 615. The second section called Labe (Elbe) in this now bigger second edition accommodated, beside now included Czech river Vltava, also the rivers Lethe an Acheron from Greek mythology. Jan Kollar seems to be influenced here by Dante (Dante Alighieri, Italian poet, the author of The Divine Comedy, who died in 1321) and Byron's Childe Harold's Pilgrimage (George Gordon Byron, English poet, 1788 - 1824); he wanders through the Slavic heaven and hell, describing what he sees.

--- River Lethe, whose water, according to Greek mythology, causes forgetfulness of the past in those who drink it represents here the heaven, river Acheron is part of hell. --- Hell is peopled by those who have persecuted the Sla ys. The weight of historical and archeological information which Jan Kollar incorporated into his poetry became so great that he was compelled to publish VYklad, Ptime'tky a vysvetlivky ke Slavy dcere (Annotations, in other words Additions and Explanations to The Daughter of Slava). --- Kollar was also a successful publicist. He wrote, in this field, an excellent ar: ticle called My g lenky o libozvanosti obzvla g te 'C'eskoslovanske (Thoughts about the Euphony of the Languages as such, Especially of the Language of the Czech Slays), which was printed in the magazine Krok (a Step) in 1823. Kollar collected and published in 1834 - 35 two volumes of Slovak folk songs as Narodnie Zpievanky, but there is no trace of folk influence on his poetry, though his ideology is romantic. Kollar's pan - Slavic ideas were expressed in the article titled 0 literarnej vzajemnosti mezi kmeny a nale'C'imi slayskYmi (On the Literary Kinship of Different People and Languages of the Sla ys); this article appeared in German in the Hronka magazine in 1837. A shorter version was published a year earlier in Czech in the same publication. As a Protestant preacher he also wrote several textbooks for the Evangelical schools and published, in the years of 1831 and 1844, two volumes of his sermons.

Although he used, in his sonnets, quite often the Slovak language (this was in line with his theories about the harmony of the Slavic languages) he was --- as were many Czech writers at that time --against the formation of the literary Slovak language, stressing the necessity of the united literary language for Bohemians, Moravians, Silesians and Slovaks.

Kollar advocated the cultural union of all Slays. A common Slavic alphabet (Latin) should be formulated, but no common Slavic language is needed; language and culture should be left distinct for the sake of variety. Kollar pan Slavic ideology was very popular in the old country, be it in the Czech lands or in Slovakia. Certain parts of his Slavy dcera (The Daughter of Slava), such as for instance the great prologue, produc-

ed in addition a lofty, dignified and moving poetry. Some examples of Kollar's poetry are found translated into English in John Bowring's A Cheskian Anthology (1832); Paul Selver included some stanzas from Kollar's poems in Anthology of Czechoslovak literature (1929); E.W. Underwood mentions Kollar and his poetry in The Slav Anthology (1931) and the same did R.A. Ginsburg in his Soul of a Century (1942).

In the old country, Kollar's literary work was for example analyzed in 1947 by Blahoslav Capek in his book Zateni ducha i slova (The Glow of Mind and the Spoken Word); another excellent write-up titled Jan Kollar was written by Franti§ek \facial/ Krej 6 . 1 in 1920. The patriotic poet Kollar is also very popular among Czechs and Slovaks living outside of Czechoslovakia; I owned a house in the late fifties on Kollar Drive, close to Masaryktown, in Scarborough (a suburb of Toronto) in Canada.

(There is a Palacky Street and Beran Drive nearby Masaryktown, too.) The pan-Slavis movement ardently advocated by the great Slavic poet Jan Kollar is alive here in Houston's St. Cyril and Methodius Heritage Society. This society consisting of the membership from several Slavic backgrounds is in charge of the religious and secular festivities every year, second Sunday in July, to commemorate the arrival of St. Cyril and Methodius, the apostles of Slays, at Great Moravia 1124 years ago.

Let us re-dedicate ourselves to our Czech heritage; our old country has a very rich history with plenty of outstanding people, one should be proud of, in all walks of life!

Are you 55 years or older? If the answer is yes, then this could apply to you.

Are you interested in saving 10 percent on your automobile insurance premium on each driver in your household who is the principle driver of a car? This course is conducted by a trained member of AARP and restrictions as established by AARP sets a maximum of 30 students per class.

The course is an innovative classroom driver - retraining program designed to help senior citizens improve their driving skills.

The course material covers 'he effects of aging and medications on driving, basic training rules, license renewal, local traffic hazards, adverse road conditions, energy savings, and accident prevention measures, etc.

The Texas State Driver's Handbook and Workbook are used as a guide and slide presentations are most valuable in the teaching of this course.

Have you realized that research studies show that senior drivers are involved in more accidents than our younger counterparts when the record is based on actual miles driven?

I certainly didn't know this until I participated in this course in April 1986. My wife, Rita, also took the course and we are now both enjoying a 10 percent discount (20 percent discount total) on our automobile insurance premiums which is good for a three - year period. Then it's time to take another driver's course to re establish premium reductions benefits.

AARP has certainly tried to make it easy on us "old - timers" by not asking us to sit in class all day long.

There are two 4 - hour sessions at Lodge No. 88, Houston on Thursday and Friday, February 19 - 20. And to make those two sessions easier for us "old - timers," we get a 10 - minute break at the end of each hour and an hour for lunch. You may want to "brown - bag it" or go to lunch at one of the early eateries or maybe you might just want to sit around during lunch hour "shooting the breeze" about the world's problems; we all have a tendency to want to do that.

Classes on these two days start at 9 a.m. and are completed at 1 p.m.

The price for all of this "good stuff" is only $7 per student.

Checks are to be made to AARP and presented on the first morning of class, of course, cash will not be refused if you prefer.

Nemcova (1820-1862)

Boiena

This commemorative article is intended to honor the great Czech novelist and creator of the immortal classic "Babieka" (Granny), Bo2ena Nemcova, who died in January, 125 years ago. Bo2ena Nemcova(nee Barbara Panklova) was born on February 4, 1820 in Vienna, at that time the capitol city of Austro Hungarian Empire. (Vienna's population was_ almost one - fourth Czech in 19th century.) Her father, Johann Pankel, Austrian of the German stock, was a coachman in the services of Count Schulenberg; her mother, Terezie, nee Novotna, was Czech, who worked in Vienna as a maid - servant. Bo2ena (Barbara) was still an infant when her parents moved from Vienna to the estate of_ the Duchess Zahailska at Ratibo?ice close to the historical town of Ceska Skalice in the Northeastern Bohemia. This town was, at that time, a center of the progressive revivalists of the Czech heritage and a place of the renowned Dahlia festivals. Little Bo2ena (also called Barunka) grew up under the beneficial influence of her grandmother, Magdalena Novotna, from Nachod's district, who lived at her daughter at Ratibofice in the years 1825 - 29. Bo2ena received her rather modest education at Chvalkovice and in the district town of Ceska Skalice.

At seventeen she married, at the insistance of her mother and without true affection, Josef Nemec in 1837 at the church of the Virgin Mary in Maid Skalice. (Her _ parents, Johann and Teresie Panklovi (Pankel) were married in the same church; Maid Skalice is located to the northwest of the district town Ceska Skalice on the other side of Upa River. Boiena's husband, Josef, a minor official of the revenue service, fifteen years her senior, was an upright but somewhat rigid man who apparently had little if anything in common with his wife. At his job he was transferred almost all the time; they moved, after the wedding, almost every year until 1842.

After the wedding it was cervenY Kostelec, in 1838 they lived at Josefov, in 1839 they moved to Litomy gl, in 1840 they were at Polna and in 1842 they moved to Prague. During that constant moving, Bo2ena Nemcova gave birth to four children in five years of marriage. (Hynek 1838 - 1853, Karel 1839 - 1901, Theodora 1841 -_1920 and Jaroslav 1842 - 1898.) While in Prague (1842 - 45) Nemcova met and struck a friendship with almost all _ leading representatives of the Czech and Slovak cultural world of that time.

Among her Czech friends were CelakovskY, Erben, Frie, Havlieek, Hanug , Klacel from Brno, NebeskY, Purkyne, Sofie Podlipska and Karolina Svetla; from Slovak writers, her friends were Andrej Sladkovie, Janko, Kral, Samo Chalupka, Jan Chalupka and others.

The above mentioned Klacel from

Brno was an educator and patriot. He, Sugif, Wurm and others strengthened composer Pavel KfinovskY's love for the Czech heritage. Franti§ek Matoug Klacel was similarly, like Pavel KflikovskY, persecuted by the German religious authorities in Brno. Ir contrast to KrakovskY, Klacel was able to immigrate to the U.S., where he became an editor of Slovan Amerikansky in Racine, Wisconsin.

He died on March 17, 1882 in Belle Plaine, Iowa.

In 1845, the Nemec family moved from Prague to the historical town of Doma2lice in the colorful region of Chodsko in Southern Bohemia. Here Nemcova occupied herself with ethnography and was active politically for the well - being of _the local Czech people. Her patriotic striving was disliked by the Austrian authorities and was partly the cause of new moving for her family and eventual demotion of her husband. After the unsuccessful Prague's revolution of 1848, Josef Nemec was transferred as politically unreliable from DomaAice to the town of Nymburk and, in 1850, demoted to the city of Liberec in Northern Bohemia. At the end of the same year, he was transferred to Mig kovec and later to Darmoty in the Hungarian part of the Austro Hungarian Empire. His wife, Boiena, already alienated from him emotionally, decided to stay with her children in Bohemia and settled in Prague. Her 12 years spent there were only interrupted by a short stay in DraIdany (Dresden) in today's East Germany and by 3 trips (1851, 52 and 55) to Slovakia, known at that time as Upper Hungary, and to Hungary proper, to see her husband. Her financial situation was poor and became critical when her husband was forcibly retired with a measly pension in 1857. The growing tension between Bo2ena and Josef Nemec came finally to the breaking point in 1861 when Nemcova moved to the historical town of Litomyg l in Eastern Bohemia. She was invited there by a publisher Augusta to edit severaLcollections of her prosaic work, which she hoped would bring her some money. She became seriously sick there though and returned to Prague. Exhausted by hard work and constant want (she was supporting her children), she died there two weeks before her forty second birthday. Her grave is in the famous Slavin cemetery at Vy gehrad in Prague.

Bo2ena Nemcova entered the literary literary field by her excellent patriotic poetry in the years of 1844 - 48. Her first prosaic work Narodni Bachorsky a povesti (National Stories and Fairy Tales) and later composed Slovenske pohadky a poveiti (Slovak Stories and Fairy Tales) put Nemcova, because of her outstanding narrative style, into the front ranks of the Czech writers.

After the death of her favorite son, Hynek, during the constantly increasing hardship, Nemcova turned to the happy memories of her childhood for literary inspiration and wrote her masterpiece "Babieka" (The Grandmother) in 1855. She presented, in an idealized autobiographical setting, a series of remarkably well drawn characters as well as the atmosphere _ and custom of the countryside in Bohemia. Around a slight plot the authoress skillfully constructed a book which gives a deep impression of a simple and meaningful life. The immortal classic "Babieka" (The Grandmother) is, without a doubt, one of the most_widely - read and best loved_ works of Czech literature._ This excellent book reached

its 312th copyright in Czechoslovakia in 1962 and it was translated into 64 different foreign languages . q3abieka" (The Grandmother) was translated into English in 1891 by Frances Gregor. Boiena Nemcova then proceeded to write quite a few short stories, a number of them dealing with themes from the countryside of the old_country_ It was for example, Pohorska vesnice (The Mountain Village) in 1856, V zamku a v podzamei (A Life in the Chateau and Life in its Shadow) in 1856, Chudi lide (Poor Folk) in 1856, Dobr' elovek (Good Man) in 1858, Chyle pod horami (Cottage Under the Mountains) in 1859, Ueitel (The Teacher) in 1860 and others.

Nemcova's literature creativity and excellent narration were highly evaluated by many competent experts.

The following translated quote of Vaclav Tillie says it all: "The height of Nemcova's eloquent style was not reached by any of the fellow - writers of her time. Even the Czech literature of the later era has very few such accomplishments of the perfect balance of a word and thought, and of such a pure, simple, and at the same time, very artistic narration"----.

Bo2ena Nemcova, as described by her contemporaries, was a beautiful, sensitive, and emotionally intense woman, who played an important role in the Czech national revival.

If only we would have the fervency of Nemcova for our ethnic goals in Texas!

Taking A Personal Inventory

By W.J. "Bill" Malina The year 1986 has come and gone.

Where did it go? Only memories of it remain. As we look back upon last year, we can see many things that we should have done, things that we should not have done, and things that we started to do, but did not finish.

Many of us made "New Year Resolutions" for 1986 with full expectations of fulfilling them, but, for one reason or another, did not.

Were these reasons merely excuses for not really wanting to do them? Now it is too late, we cannot go back and change anything.

When we look back into the history of our lives, and 1986 is history, we find that events fall into three general categories -- events that were enjoyable, events that were distasteful, and events that were neutral; that is, they were neither enjoyable nor distasteful. The memories of distasteful events seem to remain with us for a longer time than do the others.

Somehow, we must look at the brighter side of the distasteful events, learn from them and turn them into positive influences in our lives.

All too often we are so busy feeling sorry for ourselves that we fail to see the good things around us, and tend to view the entire world with pessimism.

Put 3 ounces of water in a 6 - ounce glass and show it to a pessimist and he will say it is half empty; show it to an optimist and he will say it is half full.

Another illustration is the story of two poor homeowners who lived across the street from a prominent and rather well to - do family; one, feeling sorry for himself, claimed that he was unfortunate because he could not afford to live in the style which the rich

neighbor enjoyed; the other was thankful that he had the privilege of living close to someone of the rich neighbor's prominence. It is, after all, only a different point of view.

Whether you consider a particular event in your life as distasteful, neutral or enjoyable depends entirely upon your point of view of that particular situation.

On Thursday, November 27, we celebrated "Thanksgiving Day." Most of us recounted the many blessings we received during the past year. Did we really take inventor y of all the good things that happened to us? It is so easy to take all our privileges and blessings for granted and let Thanksgiving become a mere meaningless ritual or excuse to over indulge in a big feast.

Up to this point we have looked at ourselves rather pessimistically, which is very easy to do. Somehow we must convince ourselves to take a more optimistic point of view. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale emphasizes this very thing in his book "The Power of Positive Thinking." Songwriters have tried to do the same thing with words like "look for the silver lining" and "You got to accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative."

There seems to be something mystical or magical about that moment of time when December 31st turns into January 1st. In reality nothing changes except attitude; negative feelings about the old year turn into positive feelings for the new year. The old year becomes history and heritage, something to be looked back upon; the new year becomes an opportunity for us to fulfill desires or ambitions and make changes in our lives and attitudes.

At the end of each year most large companies look back upon the past year to determine how well they did by preparing lengthy reports to show their financial status. The inventory listing is an important part of the annual reports. Large factories and huge office buildings are highly visible, but there are thousands upon thousands of seemingly insignificant items that must be accounted for. It may well be that the entire operation of a large factory depends upon a ten - cent item. It is essential for the management of that company to know that this ten - cent part is available when it is needed.

Like the large companies, we as individuals should take periodic inventories of our lives, balance the good with the bad, and make sure that we have the little, seemingly unimportant things accounted for. In an old hymn we find the words "Count your many blessings, name them one - by - one ---," which tell us that we should take a personal inventory of our lives. Like the large corporations we, too, have blessings that are highly visible; a comfortable home, one or more modern automobiles, good health, etc. We must also look upon the small, seemingly insignificant events we have experienced up to this point in our lives and, especially, during the past year.

We must reflect upon the new friends we made, the joys we had, the difficulties we successfully overcame and all other things that in some way made our lives a little happier or easier. It is easy to have a pessimistic outlook when we hear of all the crime and violence around us, the bad shape of our economy, the unfortunate accidents happening on our highways, etc. In spite of all that, if we honestly take inventory of ourselves and the effect of 1986 upon our lives, we will find that we are so much better off

How fortunate we are to have the privilege of living in such a wonderful country as the United States of America.

Czech Heritage Society Of Texas Meeting/Seminar In Fayette County The first Czech Genealogy Seminar in Fayette County will be March 7, 1987 in the SPJST Lodge No. 1 Hall in Fayetteville. Registration will start at 9:30 a.m. The seminar will last until 4 p.m. A Czech meal will be served at the lodge hall.

Persons researching the genealogy of their Czech ancestors will be told about Czech passenger lists, research in Czechoslovakia, their Czech ancestors' villages of origin and Czech cemeteries in Texas. Experts from the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will talk and assist with your problems.

District II officers will have 2 or maybe 3 buses going to the meeting.

We welcome each of you to go with us.

The youth club children ages 6 through 16 will be permitted to ride free; also all children under 6 years of age ride free. All adults ages 17 through 64 will pay $10 per person for a round trip and adults ages 65 and over will pay $5 per person for a round trip. One bus will leave from Taylor and one from Temple. Please let the president of your lodge know before March 1st if you are planning to ride the bus.

Lodge 13 YC To Sponsor Dance

December was a busy month for us.

On December 5, we helped decorate our lodge and also practiced our Christmas program; on December 10, we had our Christmas dinner at Lazy Fisherman's and I can speak for all of us when I say everyone got their fill.

We had a nice time, especially when we got to exchange gifts; on December 13, we had our Christmas party and our program was at 4 p.m. We did skits. The first one was "Interview With Santa" and the second one was "A Special Gift From Santa."

Everyone did .a great job and we had a lot of fun doing that.

We also sold tickets on a ceramic centerpiece which was won by Karen Kubitza, and on a Honey Jo bear which was won by Billie Boatman.

The lodge served a delicious turkey and dressing dinner. After dinner we had a Polka Band playing music and everyone had a great time.

Our youth club will be sponsoring a dance at the Dime Box SPJST Hall.

The hand playing will be "Texas Unlimited."

The Junior group went to see "Song of the South" at the Giddings Cinema on January 22nd.

Lodge 13 Dime Box YC Held,Meeting The last monthly meeting of the Dime Box Youth Club was held on January 19, 1987 at 3 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President Susan Spacek, and Matthew Ford led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The roll was called and the secretary's minutes. were read by Secretary Trudy Krenek. Treasurer Jennifer Gold then gave us the treasurer's report.

We talked about the dates of YAD and camp.

The youth club will sponsor a dance on February 7th. The public is invited.

The tickets will be $3.50 each.

It was also decided that the Junion will go to a movie on Thursday, January 22 at 8 p.m. The meeting was then adjourned.

Dear Readers, The El Campo - Hillje Youth Club meeting was held on Tuesday, January 6, 1987 at the Commercial State Bank Gold Room. Mrs. Alfred Brandt was hostess.

Jody Henderson opened the meeting. Danny Borak led the pledge.

Miss Kacal read the minutes. Darren Dybala gave the treasurer's report.

Charleen Mondrik gave a report on the Christmas party. We will go to Camp Wagon Wheel, July 17th through 19th.

Prior to our meeting, we took magazines to Garden Villa Nursing Home.

We began our meeting at 6:30 p.m.

First, we elected our new officers and discussed our new members. We also have a new youth leader since Mrs. Evelyn Schwab handed the position over to Mrs. Natalie Guevara.

We have discussed Camp Val Verde and other yearly vacations.

We've made plans for our Valentine project. We are going to have a. dance contest on Valentine's Day, Saturday, February 14 at the SPJST Lodge 188 and we will be selling tickets on an alligator that will be given away.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, February 8 at 2 p.m. at the Lodge 188 hall in Centerville. The meeting then adjourned at 7:30 p.m.

for FRED Funeral services STEFFEK, 95, a resident of River in Oaks Convalescent Center Columbus, Texas, were held Thursday, December 11, 1986, from St. Michael's Catholic Church, with burial in the parish cemetery, with Father Charles Carolan officiating.

Brother Steffek, a retired farmer, died December 10, 1986 at 10 a.m. in the convalescent home, where he had lived the past 15 years.

Born 28 November 1891, in Nyrkovice, Austria, he was the son of Florian and Mary (Kalmus) Steffek.

He and his family came to America when he was 13, landing in Galveston, Texas in September 1903 and settling near Dubina. Later they moved to southeast of Weimar.

Brother Steffek married Frances Kroboth in 1915 at St. Michael's Catholic Church. They lived near Borden and moved to Holman in 1920.

Brother Trojacek was born March 28, 1918, in Telico to Joe M. and Mary (Vrla) Trojacek. He was reared in Telico and graduated from Telico High School in 1936. He was employed by the American Carbon Paper Company and worked there until WWII. He entered the U.S. Army and served in the Persian Gulf and in the European Theater of War. After his discharge, he returned to work for the American Carbon Paper Company June 12, 1946. He was married to Emma Cikanek of Ennis. After their marriage they lived in Ennis. He retired in 1980 after 40 years of service as supervisor of the plant. After his retirement, he became more active on his farm in Telico.

He was a 54 - year SPJST member of Lodge 25 in Ennis, serving as treasurer for 10 years, club manager for 15 years, a 40 - year member of the American Legion Post, charter member of the VFW Post No. 7106, serving as past Post Quartermaster and All - State Post Quartermaster. He was currently serving as Post Trustee. He was treasurer of the Telico Volunteer Fire Department.

Brother Trojacek was a member of St. John's Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Emma Trojacek of Ennis; two daughters, Mrs. Neva DelBosque of Ennis and Mrs. Kathy Navarro of Ennis; three sisters, Mrs. Lillie Forson, Mrs. Vlasta Sramek and Mrs. Alice Honza; two grandchildren, Kimberly and Steven Navarro and several nieces and nephews.

Two brothers, Emil and Arnold Trojacek, preceded him in death.

Mass of Christian Burial for Joe H. Trojacek, 68, was celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. John's Catholic Church with the Rev. Larry Pichard as celebrant and Howard Leshikar, president of the SPJST Supreme Lodge in Temple, giving the eulogy.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday in Keever Chapel. Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary with the following serving as pallbeaters: Ronnie Cikanek, Pat Archibald, Larry Honza, Ricky Sramek, Rex Spurgeon and Frankie Svehlak.

Honorary pallbearers were Raymond Honza, Jr. and Gene Jakubik.

The annual Czech Heritage Day will be held in San Antonio on Sunday, March 1, 1987. Sponsored by the Czech Cultural and Educational Foundation, it will be held at St. Margaret Mary's Activity Center, 1314 Fair Avenue. Registration for the full day's activities is $5 per immediate family or household. Advance registration is encouraged!

The day will begin with Mass including Czech music at 10:30 a.m., followed by a ceremony honoring couples who have been married 50 years or longer. Honorees should be identified and registered no later than 4 weeks prior to the celebration!

Immediately following, a Czech - style dinner will be served -- sausage or ham and all the trimmings. The cost will be $3.50 for adults and $2 for children under 12. For dessert we are asking all participants to bring their favorite sweets.

You are invited to enter your baked goods in a "Czech Pastry Bake - Off." Entries will be accepted at the door in the following categories: Kolache, buchty and other pastry. Trophies will be awarded. After being judged, all entries will be added to dessert table for all to sample.

The San Antonio Czech Singers will entertain at 1 p.m., followed by the Wence Shimek dance orchestra from 1:30 until 5:30 p.m.

During the dance, a drawing and door prize will be awarded. Tato replika je postavena z vychodniho Texasu z klad (loksu); je y e zvlaStni mistnosti pionyrske, ye ktere take pfipravujeme vystavit koear, ktery byl koupen v 1891 (jen co bude dobarveny).
