In the last issue of Vestnik, on page 3, column_l, in the sixth paragraph (of SL President Howard Leshikar's Report), you can find reference to an SPJST emblem being sent to members for _display on the window of your vehicle._ Be sure to use it when you receive it.

Keep in mind the dates of February 16th, at 9 p.m. and February 27th, at 9:30 p.m. -- These are the dates the SPJST - KNCT - TV produced film "Czechs Within _ a Texas Checkerboard" will air on PBS Station KNCT TV Channel 46.

Members, also take notice of the forthcoming practice for the "Toraky" and Domino Tournaments; refer to more information on page 3 in this edition. *** Recently, in this column were names of some members who were active in Lodge Nove Kvety No. 35, Elk years ago; those were taken from the history of Lodge No. 35. Of course, we failed to mention those who came along later; members named Pavelka, Zalman, (Vincent and son, Rudolph), Bordovsky (Billy and Theodore), Vicha, John Mach, etc., which was soon after World War II. At the present time, the lodge is being kept very active by such families named Breitkreutz, Banik, Pavelka, Wood, Burney and others; this lodge's membership is always loyal to the lodge and they seem to get along very fraternally and definitely do support their youth.

The reason for these lines is the fact that yours truly feels he had overlooked some deserving members before. ***

At least half of stroke victims have high blood pressure. Uncontrolled high blood_pressure can also lead to heart and kidney failure. Therefore, it is important .to have your blood pressure checked and _follow your physician's instructions if your blood pressure is too high.

Suppose that on your next physical examination your doctor discovers that you have high blood pressure.

What should you do? _ Check your blood pressure several times over the_next six months. Even a single significant elevation of the blood pressure above the normal values in persons not_ under considerable _stress at the time it is taken is associated in a large number

of people with the eventual development of high blood pressure.

Ask your doctor about what your blood _pressure should_ be and how often_it should be checked.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure of long duration can lead to heart failure, stroke, and kidney failure. it is sometimes called 'the silent killer" because it usually does not produce symptoms. The onset of headaches, rapid_heart beat, fatigue, or nosebleeds may indicate high blood pressure in a small percentage of people.

What causes high blood pressure?

The vast majority of patients (95 percent) has_no known cause. In the 5 percent of cases when cause can be found, kidney_ disease is the major contributing _factor .

Recently, it has_been shown that the daily consumption of alcoholic beverages in excess of two ounces (1 beer 1 ounce of alcohol) per day predisposes one _to high _ blood pressure. Upon discontinuation of alcohol, the blood pressure usually falls. quickly. _ Lifestyle changes are the best therapy for mild high blood pressure.

Cutting down on salt in your diet, losing weight if you are obese, and getting more exercise if you are sedentary may be all you need to keep your blood pressure within normal bounds. First, ask your doctor if it is okay to exercise, since blood pressure increases during exercise. _ Although there is no indication that smoking directly causes high blood pressure, smoking can lead to heart disease. People with high blood pressure_ increase their risk of heart disease if they smoke; therefore, it is best _to stop smoking. Because stress can cause high blood pressure, people who are constantly under stress benefit from learning to_ control it.

Making these changes aren't always easy_ Patient education and frequent reminders are important. At Scott and White, patients with consistently high blood pressure may be referred to the Patient Education Department for more information about controlling their blood pressure. _ __ Physicians can prescribe medication for people who_ have difficulty controlling their high blood pressure with lifestyle changes. Medicines can be expensive and have side effects, however, so it is best to attempt to control _ high blood pressure by developing more healthy daily habits __ first.

If _ your doctor does prescribe medication for high blood pressure, it is important to take it exactly as your doctor prescribes. Don't decide to stop taking medication without asking your doctor.

In the last 15 years, the death rate from stroke has dropped by 45 percent, due _ largely to proper treatment for high blood pressure. It is also likely that long - term control of high blood pressure_has_ contributed to the 31 percent decline in deaths from heart disease. A commitment to taking good care of yourself, especially if you have high blood pressure, may be all you need to make these statistics work for you. ***

We wish to call attention of our members to the fact that there are times when we have to delay some Features, Youth Letters, Expressions of Sympathy, etc. because of urgent material. Priority is given to Supreme Lodge material, district affairs and local lodge letters, (especially time dated) and urgent matters; please keep this in mind.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO SPJST IRA OWNERS A change in the Law requires that IRA Contributions must be identified as to the year for which a Deposit is to be applied.

This is most important during the period, January 1 through April 15, 1987 when IRA Contributions can be applied to the previous year (1986), or the current year (1987).

This change to properly report IRA Contributions is mandated

by IRS to verify the transaction through IRS Form 5498 filed by SPJST and the Individual Income Tax Form 1040 Filing Return.

Please make certain that when IRA Contributions are forwarded, that it is clearly noted on the check, or application for what particular year the deposit is to be applied.

Attention Lodge 6, Cottonwood Members Dear Members and Friends: A reminder to all members and friends about our next Board of Trustees' meeting on January 30th at 7:30 p.m.

Our Lodge 6 meeting will be held on February 1st at 1 p.m. I hope you are still keeping in mind that there will be a dinner served at 12 noon before the meeting. All members and friends are invited to be sure and attend because we will be glad to have you.

One Correction: In my last report, it read that the gold necklace was donated by Brother Al and Sister Willie Mae Schuetz; it should have read Brother Bobby Dobecka, the winner and not Sister Mary Lander.

Lodge 28, East Bernard Meeting Dear Members: The February meeting of Lodge Karel Jonas will be held on February 1st at 1 p.m. The "Order of Business" will be standard. There will be a special report or two. The location of the meeting, at present, is the main hall but may be moved downstairs in an old office facing Leveridge Street.

A limited gathering will take place after the meeting since the lodge will not participate.

The January meeting, on the 4th, started rather abruptly. It lasted a little longer due to a lengthy oration. A motion was made and passed to allow Brother A.J. "Tony" Kelner to act in behalf of the "Board of Trustees" to get the electricity turned on in a small office downstairs. A second motion was made and passed to move the meeting, on a trial basis, downstairs into an office facing Leveridge Street.

A third motion was made and passed to place lodge papers, CDs and money in a safety deposit box. A fourth motion on Bingo failed.

Although the lodge spent very little for the luncheon, few stayed. The festive "Air" of past luncheons was not present but it seemed as though everyone enjoyed each other's company. Sisters Polasek, Kortis, Luquette and Nezval donated the bulk of the food. Sister Luquette sent some food even though she could not attend.

It was learned that Sister Annie Kubena fell and hurt herself again; she just came home from the hospital.

It is our hope that she will get well soon.

RE: Editor's comment on "National Geographic's article on Slovakia, Page 120, January 1987. This writer also has been a member a long while and read the article in question. This writer's father was born in Kosice. The writer must have done a lot of research for what he wrote about Slovakia being a mixture of many people is true. This

writer's father told him, many times, of the many different nationals working in the Brick and Kermit (sic) plant where this writer's grandfather was the "Ober Meister" of the kiln.

There were Poles, Serbs, Germans, Austrians, Hungarians, Slovaks (naturally) and others.

40 Contributes $150

The El Campo - Hillje SPJST Lodge No. 40 held their meeting on Monday, January 19th. President Rita Vanek called the meeting to order. A minute of silence for our departed members was observed. James Bacak led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers answered the roll call.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Treasurer Madeline Shimek presented the treasurer's report, pending_ audit.

Hall Manager_Bennie Reck reported on _hall bookings. Second Vice President Dora Lee Kopecky had no new report. Youth Leader Mary Ann Karasek gave her report.

We welcomed new members Eugene Bena, Sharon Bena_ and Daniel Bradford. We also welcomed transfer members Yvonne and Lisa Morris.

The date set for our Family Day gathering is Sunday, July 12th.

The membership voted to donate $150 to the Youth Club.

Door prize was won by Floyd Shimek.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The first lodge meeting of 1987 was held on Sunday, January 4th at 2 p.m.

President Jerry Pechal called the meeting to order. Flag Bearers Heidi Schroeder and Melanie Koslovsky led the pledge to _the flag.

Brother Willie E. Kohutek, District II director, installed the officers and spoke to the assembly. He detailed the duties of each officer and the trustee.

He, also, complimented the lodge reports of all the chairpersons_ and officers_ The open - type meeting is the most informative for interested members. Brother Kohutek asked that all members.cooperate with the newly. installed officers so the lodge _ will progress as in the past. President Pechal thanked Brother Willie for performing the installation and the impressive speech.

The lodge president then_ expressed thanks to Brother Alfred Klusacek for serving as vice president for last five years and also _to Sister Martha and him for all_their help in these years; also thanks to retiring _ trustees, Brother_Henry Mares and Sister Vallie Chlapek, for their services last year and previously, Sisters Rosie Craft and Mary Ann Billeck for serving as youth leaders and _ assistants, thanks _ to Johnny Hruska for serving as auditor for half a year, Gene and Ann Hejl for being cleanup chairpersons for 1986 and congratulated_Brother Anton and Sister Julia Vitek for receiving the Special Award for 1986. He welcomed all newly - elected officers, youth leaders_ and trustees.

President Pechal welcomed everyone and wished them all a "Happy New Year." There were 90 members and 7 visitors present. The visitors were Frank and Frances Kotrla, Ann Balusek, Gertrude Kahlig, Willie Hegar, Albert Koslovsky and Nelda Marek. We were glad you took time to visit our lodge _ meeting and invite _you to come,_ again, real soon.

Roll call of officers and sales representatives was held and the minutes of the _previous lodge meeting were read by Sister Delores Skrabanek and they were approved as read.

Correspondence received were a letter from SL _President Brother Howard Leshikar inquiring if our lodge would bid to host either of the tournaments of the three scheduled, a thank you from Brother Edmund W. Jeske family for floral wreath sent by our lodge to the member's funeral, and season's greetings from Foxworth Galbraith Lumber Company saying they appreciated the purchase from them during the year.

Under officer's report, the president thanked everyone for helping with the Christmas party in whatever way -decorating, cooking, being on the program and cleaning up afterwards.

He thanked everyone for helping in any way in 1986 and hoping the same will hold true again this year; also thanked Alfred and Martha Klusacek, Henry and Helen. Janacek for helping with tablecloths for New Year's Eve dance and to Alfred and Martha Klusacek _and Calvin and Delores Skrabanek for helping undecorate the hall on New Year's Day. __ The controls for the parking lot and gate lights being inside the hall is really working wonderfully; sure beats getting out of the car in the cold or wet

weather that we are now experiencing!

Brother Dan Balusek, S.P.LS.T. Rest Homes _ director, reminded everyone to make plans to help the rest home in. Taylor celebrate the 30th year on March 29th and he thanked Sister Margaret Gibson for making lap robes for the residents of the-rest home. _ All of the other officers gave their respective reports, both monthly and annual. The chairpersons' and Audit Committee reports followed.

Newly- elected Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky gave her report. There were 24 members. present and_ 2 new members, Erin and Gary Skrabanek, and 3. visitors. They visited the SPJST Museum at the Supreme Lodge and had ice cream afterwards for their January social. Jennifer Pechal was the only one having a birthday this month.

Brother Frank Klinkovsky, DYC, thanked the retiring youth leaders and assistants. He then reminded the youth of the skating party on February_ 15th and of the District II spring meeting in Lovelady on Sunday,,_ March 22nd.

Birthdays were being observed by George Pavelka, Lydia _Kotrla, Ann Balusek, Dam Wiley, Julia Vitek, Leo Kahlig, Lucy Mihatsch, Agnes Trampota, _Georgia Sodek, Gladys Marek, Emily and Floyd Stuteville, Alice Banning, Marie Hegar and Delores _ Skrabanek. Wedding anniversaries will be observed by Johnny and Vlasta Hruska (43 years), and Lonnie and Olga Schroeder (45 years). After adjournment, we enjoyed leftovers of turkey, dressing, gravy and green beans from the Christmas party and heated by some volunteers.

The youth club has. set Friday, February 27th for their fund-raiser, a chili supper and auction. Be watching the Vestnik for more details. They will be looking for help by donations of cakes to be used, either in kitchen, cakewalk or auction and also items to auction. Be there to support the youth club of Lodge 47! _Lodge 47 will be having a lodge picnic on Sunday, June 7th. 47 Presents Annual Award

December 14, 1986 at the lodge's Christmas party, Lodge 47 President Jerry Pechal is shown presenting the Brother and Sister Award to a deserving couple, Brother Anton and Sister Julia Vitek. _ They have been active in lodge activities for more than 50 years. They still come regularly to the lodge meetings, _workdays, and help_with any special occasion with the cooking, etc., and serve on many of the committees_ at different times.

They, also, celebrated their golden wedding _anniversary recently. In his acceptance speech, Brother Vitek said that their anniversary celebration was a surprise and this award was another one. They had been sick and, with the

January Meeting Lodge 66, Waco

Sister Parma _gave the trust fund report. She thanked Barbara Brem for keeping the books, she did an excellent job. Sister Parma was then presented a check for $50 for the fund. _Entertainment Committee report, given by Sister Ruby Orsag, was that members are to bring_ sandwiches to the February meeting _ and the committee _ will provide_ chips and cookies. Sister Orsag is chairman of the _ committee, with _Leona Nors serving as co. - chairman, Polly Gaidusek as secretary/treasurer, with other members _ serving on the Telephone Committee. _ The Fraternal Committee reported that there was no money to be given away this month. She read a thank you from Chris Spence and stated that the VA had been able to purchase its van with the help of contributors such as our lodge. The same committee is serving with the exception of Sue Pauling. Dorothy Moore will take her place. _ _Get well cards were sent to Ira Niswanger_ and William Winkle.

Sympathy cards were sent to Mr. and Mrs. Leon Hensel and Ed Mazanec, Sr. Our youth leader reported that 24 members and one new member were present at the youth meeting. Sister Yates reported _the _ club donated money to three charitable causes in December. She also reported that the youth would go see a movie on February 10th, and that they would make Valentine boxes for their February meeting. _Sister Yates thanked_ Barbara Stanislav for being her_ assistant the _ past year. New assistants will be Sister Patty Neslony and Brother Richard Pruitt.

The auditing chairman reported that all the books were in good shape.

Brother George Shilling, bookkeeper, gave the quarterly report. _ The following new members_ were accepted: Stacie_Thrasher, Frances B. Stewart, Christopher _Kofnovec, Robert Urbanovsky, Rebecca Matus, Natalie Culleton, Michael D. Niswanger, Steven Chudej, Lisa Chudej, Melissa Chudej, Monica Vahue, Cory Vahue and Amy Vahue.

Another year has begun and the first month of the new year is almost gone.

Everyone_ is_ preparing for all the coming activities including the Taroky and Domino Tournaments. Hope all of you have a very successful New Year.

Our January meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m. for the last time by outgoing President Ray Orsag. Flags were presented by Bill Warren _and Larry Yates with Donna Stanislav leading everyone in the pledge.

At this time Brother Orsag turned over _the gavel and podium to our new President George Pauling. Brother Orsag thanked everyone for their support and asked everyone _ to continue supporting Brother Pauling.

President Pauling also thanked everyone for all their help. _ Guide Tommy. Forbes gave the roll call_ and all officers were present.

Visitors were Dorothy Staccone and 0.E_ "Cotton" Blume. _ Secretary Bonnie _ Pruitt read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved_ She thanked everyone for their concern during her time of illness.. _ _ Sister Pruitt then read correspondence _from the _ Supreme Lodge concerning _ the upcoming Domino and Taroky Tournaments.

She also read a thank you from Brother Ira Niswanger.

There was discussion about Lodge 66 possibly holding one of the tournaments at our lodge.

Sister Engelke read a note from John _ and Margaret Daniels of Longview, a thank you from the Kennan family, a letter from the Ed Screeny family and reported that she had _received the 8 percent refund check from_the Supreme Lodge. _ Board minutes were read by. Sister Longlotz, who happens to be our new vice president. She reported that the members of the board agreed to letting hats be worn in the hall once again, but that it would be on a three - month trial period.

84 January Meeting

Dear Members: Our meeting started at 7:30 p.m.

Sister Vickie Gerlich led the group in the pledge to our flag. A moment of silence was observed for two departed members, Sister Hattie Hamusek and Brother Ralph Walters. The membership extends sincere sympathy to the surviving families.

Correspondence from Dallas City Planning and the SPJST Supreme Lodge (invitation to the tournament of cards and dominoes) was read.

The following committees gave reports: Entertainment -- President Cheri Petr gave the report Youth Leader -- Bessie Petr gave a report of Junior youth having their meeting now; the Teen Club was invited to go to Killeen to demonstrate the steps to the Beseda, which was video taped for future use by students of the local college; a thank you note from Brady Center for donation of foods given during Christmas collected by the youth as well as from Christmas party and also the yearly financial report was given.

Auditing -- Brother Gilbert Kalich reported our books were in good order Fraternal Coordinator -- Sister Schultz asked for rules for this newly formed office

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The recent dances held at our lodge have been well - attended. Members and their guests are encouraged to attend our dances as a variety of music is scheduled for upcoming _weeks.

Please remember that the dances are __ from 8:30 to 12:30 p.m. _ _ Brother _ Frank and Sister Minnie Krotky celebrated their golden wedding anniversary _ on Sunday, January 11th with their family and friends at the lodge. We wish Brother and Sister. Krotky many more years of happiness.

The monthly meeting was held on January 12th and was well - attended.

It was_reported that Brother Tom Jecmenek is home from the hospital.

Brother Joe Knapick is in Heights Hospital and Brother_ Jimmy Pokluda is in Westbury Hospital. Sister Agnes Pederson is now home from the hospital. We wish _all of our sick members a speedy recovery.

Sister Willie Mae Powell passed away. on January 8th at the age of 77 years. Services were _held on January 10th at South Park Funeral Home Chapel. Sister Ruby LaRue passed away on January 15th at the age of 75 years. Services were conducted on January _17th at Heights Funeral Chapel._Sister LaRue_will be missed by the Kitchen. Committee_ as she was always willing _to work during the Sunday activities. _ Mr. William J. Gerlich, father of Sister Gladys _Hagan and brother of Sisters Lillie Spies and Annie Skyvara, passed away on January 14th at the age of 91 years.

Services were held on January 17th at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in

Hallettsville. Our deepest sympathy is extended to these families.

All members interested_in learning the Czech language are encouraged to attend the classes to be taught by Brother Bill Souchek and to be held at our lodge on the following dates: February 2, 16 and 23 March 2, 16, 23 and 30 April 6, 20 and 27 (Time: 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.)_ Manny Green will be playing for the dance on January 31st. This_ is a dress code dance and admission is $17 per couple. _ _ _ Advance tickets for the Jan Garber dance_to be held on Friday, February 6th will be_available on January 20th.

The _dress code will be observed and admission_ is $20 per couple. _ The kitchen will be_open for the evening.

Advance tickets for the Al Pierson dance to be held on Saturday, February 14th will be available on January 26th. The dress code will be observed and admission is $20 per couple.

Rudy Kurtz will perform at the dance on_ Saturday, February 7th. The kitchen is open during all Saturday dances.

The regular monthly meeting will be held on Monday, February 9th at 7:30 p.m.

The Anniversary Celebration of Lodge No. 88 will be held on Sunday, February 15th. A braised beef dinner will be served starting at 11 a.m. Adult plates will be $4 and mini - plates will be $2.50. Sister Kathy Uribe on the fine job she was doing. _Lodge_133 decided not to go with the direct billing system offered by the Supreme Lodge. The members felt it was in their best interests to remain with the system used at present.

Don Netek spoke about plans for the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the local lodge. At present a _dinner is planned with the lodge providing the meat and members the vegetables/pastry dishes. _ Brother Netek said he would be contacting members for help with the _ planning and asked that the members cooperate as much as possible._It was announced, as of the present time, SL President Howard Leshikar will be present as the guest speaker.

Best wishes from the Society were extended to Mrs. Jaroslav Kleprlik and Mrs. Mildred Strobel who were on the sick list.

Attendance prize winners were Agnes _ Popp, James Dlugosh, Viola Spacek and Julia Sefcik.

Birthday members were then honored. The meeting was adjourned and the members enjoyed refreshments and a games party.

The first meeting in 1987 of Danbury Lodge 139 was called to order on January 14th by President Vincent Hechler.

After Financial Secretary Helen Filipp made her report, Treasurer Lonnie Lostak gave his report and read correspondence. Secretary Tommie Lostak was unable to attend the meeting because of the death of a member of his wife's family.

It was announced that two members of Lodge 139 are ill. Bennie Heiman is in a Houston hospital, and Velena Sebesta is in the Angleton - Danbury Hospital. We wish both of them a speedy recovery.

142, Houston Meeting Lodge

Members celebrating their_birthdays in January included Dominic_ Netek, William Mares, Anthony Trilicek, Joe Spacek, and Frances Konecny.

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 133, San Antonio, Texas, was held on Sunday, January 18, 1987 at the St. Margaret Mary's Activity Center. President Trilicek opened the meeting with the. Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for deceased members was held. _ President Trilicek made mention of the fact that the retiring secretary, Brother Dominic Netek, had actually been an officer of the lodge for 14 years instead_of the 13 years mentioned at the December meeting. The president, again, thanked him for his years of dedication.

The Auditing Committee reported that the records of the lodge were in good standing_ They complimented

All members gave a big hand to Rosie Tumis for being a great fmancial secretary and now that position has been eliminated, due to direct billing, we still have her as our great kitchen manager and the membership wishes to thank her and everyone for the fine job on preparing the many delicious foods for our Christmas party on December 17th. Also thanks to Elizabeth Hermis and her youth club for the nice skit and _Santa Claus. A special big THANK YOU to the Legends Band for the good music and they played for such a reasonable rate.

That good music just made our party the greatest.

Lodge 177, Academy Contributes $600 The first meeting of the new year was called to order at 7:32 p.m. by President Otis Beck.

All officers were present. Minutes were read and approved from our last meeting. Correspondence was also read from the Bell County Youth Fair. and the Little River - Academy Center.

Youth Leader Anne Tomastik reported seven members and two guests were present and requested the lodge for a youth club dance on February 20th.

Libbie. Bartek sent get well cards to Cindy Redelsperger and Virginia Halter.

All chairpersons' reports were good.

Board of Trustees' Reporter Edward Bartek was absent. Young farmers were given use of the hall for January 23rd. Clem Mikeska will have his usual barbecue and dance for the participants in the Bell County Youth Fair. A new ladder has been purchased for the hall.

There was no report yet from the Auditing Committee.

Two new members were accepted into the lodge; those being Brittany Lane and Iva Lee Parriott.

Donations: $100 was donated to the Bell County Youth Fair, and $500 to the Little River - Academy Center for enlarging the center; both of these were donated from Bingo.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:07 p.m.

Dear Members: A new year begins and the first meeting of 1987 was held on Monday evening, January 12th, with your new President Inez Greenlees and other new officers in charge. Things are looking much brighter; the last quarter of 1986 showed a great improvement in income and also securing a new loan from the bank gives the lodge a great push to move forward and to accomplish more for you members.

President Inez told all those present that the lodge must move forward and not look back.

Several new ideas were discussed and things are on the move:There is a very good thought expressed by Will Rogers, Jr. "Even if you are sitting on the right track and sit there too long, you can get run over." So let's act on new ideas.

The new Entertainment Chairman Edd Kral announced there will be another dance on January 31st with the Country Swing Billy's Country and Western Band playing for your dancing pleasure and on March 7th, The Last Call (country/western) band will be playing. This band has played several times at the lodge in the past and several people asked to have them to come back and play again.

Two new members were voted on and approved this month -- Melvin Haisler and Gina Diane Newman; welcome to Lodge 183!

Well, this month Daniel Roznovsky won the $16 door prize.

Congratulations, Daniel! It seems that the Roznovsky family has been very lucky and also that they have been coming regularly to the meetings.

Did you know that some people play the stock market for a living; some

dabble in the market. A few days ago, my friend received the following letter: Dear Sir: Our records show that you are holding stock in the following companies: American Can Company, Northern Water Company, Southern Gas Company, and Western Tissue Company.

Due to uncertain delays and conditions within the stock market, we advise you to sit tight on American Can, hold your water and let your gas go.

You will be interested to know that Western Tissues touched new bottoms today and thousands were wiped clean.

Birthday

The Birthday Club Sisters met for their regular monthly meeting on January 14, 1987.

President Rita Alexander opened the meeting with a memorial for our deceased members of 1986. Rita asked that we dedicate 1986 to Sister Mary Tilich and Sister Bessie Vasula. It was a great loss to our club since both died within a week. They will certainly be missed by all of us. We stood in silent prayer and concluded with the Lord's Prayer.

Secretary Rosalee Kostom read the beautiful article that Sister Lillian Finn wrote to the Vestnik, about our deceased beloved Sisters Bessie Vasula and Mary Tilich. She then read the minutes of the previous meeting, which were approved as read.

Vice President Edna Froehlich gave the financial report for Treasurer Lillie Spies, who was ill with a cold.

Rosalee announced that Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Jarisch celebrated their 57th anniversary, and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Finn their 56th anniversary.

Sunshine Lady Mary Kosut read her report on cards to the sick and bereaved members. Lillian Finn thanked all the members for their love and concern, while she was ill. Marie.

Pokluda's husband, Jimmie, has been in the hospital, but is at home now improving. Clara Jecmenek's husband, Tommy, proved to us that he can whip his illness and is back home now after a stay in the hospital. I think, Marie and Clara get some credit here, too! Emily Bily is about the same. Emil, her husband, treats her with lots of love and good care. Mrs. Agnes Pederson has been in the hospital, but supposedly doing much better.

Then, on December 23rd, Helen Hegwood's father - in - law died. We sympathize with Helen and King.

Lillian Finn was elected English reporter, but declined and asked that Pearl Hanka take it, and Lillian will assist if necessary. Pearl accepted.

A Fiesta Dinner was discussed and the date was set for March 4th, but will have to be changed to another date due to circumstances.

We voted to have a fund - raising project for Splash Day - Homecoming on June 15th. More on this later.

Delores Condon read an amusing article entitled "Undated Church."

We had Florence Taake, Della Miksch, Alice Bily and Helen Hegwood as hostesses in January. We adjourned at noon.

Once again, the Texas Czech Beseda dancers joined hands and began their twirling and dancing of the Beseda in San Angelo at "Christmas at Old Fort Concho," an annual citywide event.

This event features ongoing heritage demonstrations, chapel services, a live Nativity, wagon rides, visits with Santa, music and dance by more than 500 entertainers and ethnic food and events.

The Texas Czech Beseda dancers sponsored by SPJST Lodge Jaro No. 130 have participated in this event for the three years that one of the Officer's Quarters was designated as the "Czech

House." This year was extra special for the Czech community because of the invitation and visit of Ambassador from Czechoslovakia, Miroslav Houstee'14, his wife, Marie, and Science Attaché Dr. Jiff Zddrek.

On Friday, December 5th, our group assembled at the Olae Coach Motor Inn. Helen and Arnold Vrla, Stanley and Martha Vrla, Ken and Suzanne Vrla and Julie, David and Kelly Hlavenka and Jillian and Joshua, Roseann Parma, Alden Smith as dancers, along with Helen Vrla, Sr. as Matriarch, descended on Fort Concho fcr t he first event of the weekend. The pageant, "A Fort Concho Christmas Carol" was presented each evening past sundown.

This pageant depicted the origination of San Angelo and Fort Concho from the time of the Indians occupying the territory to the present time. Featured as its finale were the Beseda dancers

Representatives of the visiting communities presented gifts to the honored guests, depicting their local specialties. Ours was the only entertainment for the event. We danced both the Czech Narodni and Ceska Besedas for the audience, then presented our guests with our gifts.

Again, we concluded our program with the traditional serving of slivovice, bread and cheese to all present.,Our visits to San Angelo and "Christmas at Old Fort Concho" are very special to us; the officials at Fort

In the museum, you will rind items back to the year 627 and there_are only 23 of these items known to exist in the entire world. We have an outstanding military department, the largest pencil and pencollection you have _ever seen.

Just decently we have received an addition to the pencil collection from the Netherlands which_was very much appreciated. Our musical department is also tops _where we feature musical instrument used by the first Czech band in Texas in 1860, musical instruments that are over 127 years old and many _others that you_ don't see anymore;_ if you love music you will _ enjoy seeing the display. _ We have an outstanding kroj (costume) display, with krojs going back to the year 1&65; then, there are the Mrs. Jim Matlock's prize - winning ribbons that she won from 1938 to 1971 all at the Fort Bend County Fair; you will be amazed to see so many ribbons won by_one person.

Our pioneer kitchen display has, just about everything the pioneers used when_ .they came to Texas. Our

Religious Department is outstanding; here you will find pictures of our pioneer ministers, both Catholic and Protestant and many RARE, RARE religious books and other _religious items; one of the outstanding items is a quilt made by _20 ladies of the Ocker Brethren Church which consists of 20 squares each embroidered by twenty or more named members of the church in 1928.

Next, we have the doctor's office of Dr. John J. Shiller, a pioneer doctor, who started his practice here in Temple, then moved_ it to Praha, Texas, later to Victoria and, finally, settled_ at Rowena., Texas; it's something that you will want to see. _ Next is an unusual display of wood carving with 181 pieces carved out of wood from a plain axe to a cotton gin putting out miniature bales of cotton carved out of _wood by _Frank J. Bohuslav in his spare time while operating a drug store in El Campo, Texas and every item is in working order; this display is worth seeing even though you live in El _Paso or Texarkana, it is so outstanding!

Next is a display of STAMPS OF THE WORLD and this _ postage stampS. collection covers 162 countries of the_ world out of a total of 187 countries. We have had many offers from stamp collectors, but they are NOT FOR SALE at _any price.

Next is a puppet display made up in Czechoslovakia in 1873 and brought to Texas _ in 1923, show charging admission until they began losing money; they were retired and packed inboxes until they were donated to the museum. In this collection, is a "HASTERMAN" that most of us were told that he would get us if we didn't behave. It is indeed worth a trip to come see the. Hasterman from anywhere in Texas. _ Now for the last outstanding display is our pioneer room where we have built a replica of the FIRST CZECH HOME _built in Texas out _ of East Texas pine logs complete, with a fire place and furnished. _ In between these displays are many smaller _ displays _ that are very interesting,, also which you should see.

It doesn't cost you anything to see it and will benefit you in many ways. We are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Monday through Friday and special arrangement can be made for either Saturday or Sunday to see it; just contact us and let us know when you would like to come and we will gladly come _ show it to _you. Children especially school _children, will PROFIT from seeing the many displays.

Without any advertising (just by the people who have seen it), we have had visitors from every state in the union and seventeen foreign countries and every visitor was happy with what he or she _saw; so come and see it, too, and bring the children!

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting was called to order on January 7th with several of our members missing due to various reasons.

Our special guest, Sister Charlotte Vesely of Lisle, Illinois enjoyed the fellowship of her many friends; also Carrie Ann Cleveland was our guest, since she was home for the Christmas

holidays after attending her first semester of college in Lynchburg, Virginia. Carrie Ann sang a couple of songs for the members. It was indeed a joy to have both of these visitors at our meeting.

Frank Kovar, one of our birthday members, was made welcome after a stay in the hospital due to a heart attack. The two other birthday members who were not present were Linda Rangel and Eva Dockery.

A report on member Roberta Peters was encouraging after a stay in the hospital since November. She is out of intensive care and doing well.

Game Chairman Rose Steinman thanked the members for their cooperation in bringing game prizes and for being in favor of paying an increased rent fee for the facility where our monthly meetings are held. A new price on game cards was also announced.

Hostess Chairman Jo Prochaska was absent due to an ear problem. We thank Agnes Reznicek for filling in as a hostess for Rose Mary Gribble, who was absent. Our February 4th hostesses will be Merle Kovar, Mary Dunlap and Billye Starr.

Anna Johnson was the door prize winner of a glass dome marble cheese tray donated by Maria Prill.

Our congratulations to Liz Howard who retired after 15 years working for the Ridgeway Print Shop of Ft. Worth. While Liz was honored by a group of friends, her husband, Elmer, also in attendance, had a minor accident, but he is is doing well, and I am sure this is one fall he will not forget.

Our congratulations also to Henry Seviek who retired after 40 years working for the Delta Airlines as an engine mechanic.

May these two retirees enjoy many days of relaxation, good health and pleasurable moments in their daily lives.

Many of us have observed that several of the old black and white movies are being scheduled for TV viewing. Seeing "The Sound of Music" brought back European memories since Roy and I were at the place in Salzburg, Austria, where the movie was filmed. Many in our tour group took pictures of the house and the gazebo this past July. I might also mention that December 28th, a surprise phone call was received from a relative in Czechoslovakia. With modern communication, the call was made direct with no operator assistance.

We express sincere sympathy to Anna Mae George and her family on the loss of her husband, Sammie, who passed away recently.

A schedule of events was received from West Fraternal Auditorium, so we will look forward to dancing to the music of the Ernie Kucera Orchestra from Abie, Nebraska on Saturday, February 21st. We are hoping to see many of our friends there. _ Lydia Alholm —SPJST-

Section Youth Department Calendar YOUTH LEADERS' RETREAT

Attention All Youth Leaders And Assistants The annual Youth Leader's Retreat is scheduled for the weekend of February 20 - 22 at Camp Lone Star in La Grange.

All youth leaders and their assistants are encouraged to attend this training event. This is an opportunity to meet other leaders and share ideas and ask questions. All the DYCs and the State Youth Director will be present to coordinate the training. You may look forward to the following schedule: FRIDAY EVENING: Organized social with competitive games SATURDAY: Consultant on working as a positive link in a team, an update on the Youth Department changes for 1987, group games, and workshops on crafts, basic first - aid and how to teach the Beseda.

SATURDAY EVENING: Recognition Banquet, Folk Dance Instruction SUNDAY MORNING: Group work on planning camp programs, group presentations and question - and answer panel

The organized social will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday evening and the formal training will begin on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. and continue through noon on Sunday. The first meal to be served will be Saturday breakfast.

Lodging will be provided by the Supreme Lodge for each leader/assistant and their spouse.

Mileage reimbursement will be paid for one car from each lodge. The sleeping accommodations do not permit couples to share the same room. It is necessary to house at least 4 females or males per room in order to accommodate everyone who signs up for this event.

WHAT TO BRING: Personal items, warm clothing and flashlight. All the bedding and linens are furnished.

Bring along a swimsuit so you can enjoy the hot tub that is available. We will have a craft fair this year, so please bring a craft item with instructions to share with the other leaders.

The early Czechoslovaks who came to Texas relieved their loneliness by bringing with them from the villages and farms and the forest of their native land some of the fairy folk, who for countless generations, had lived with them and their forebears.

One of the most virile of these sprites is the Vodnik or Hasterman (water sprite). In Czechoslovakia this little man with green hair and hawklike nose and eyes always appeared in pretty clothes. He would wear yellow trousers, a green or red coat with long coattails and a green or gray hat decorated with flowers. He is recognized by the water dripping from his coattail. In his hand, he carried a green whip with which he lashes the water. Being as soft as wax, he is very hard to catch. His voice is nasal and foreign sounding. He likes to change into a fish, snake, frog or horse. Under the deep water near mills he had big halls and rooms set with crystals and diamonds. There he keeps drowned souls in pots covered with lids. If the lids are raised, the little souls escape like bubbles.

He lives alone or with a wife and children. His wife likes to change herself into a frog and is more friendly to people than is her husband.

In the water the Vodnik splashes until the fish pond looks like a sea and terror seizes the passer - by. At times he swings himself in the trees on the shore. Performing different jokes, he lures different people, especially young women and children, to himself.

Sometimes he sits in the form of a little boy on a footbridge and with loud cries falls into the water. He then takes into his power whoever tries to help him. On the shore he is weak, but in the water no one can get away from him. Nine times a year he comes out of his cold palace to the warm earth to lure people into the water. There are many variations of the Czech fairy tale about the Vodnik. In most cases in America, today, the Vodnik is a sinister character who is rich and can often be heard counting his money under a bridge. ***

Letters From The Youth Dime Box YC Holds Meeting The January meeting of the Dime Box Lodge 13 Youth Club was held on Sunday, January 18, 1987.

President Susan Spacek called the meeting to order.

Mattheau Ford led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Trudy Krenek read the secretary's minutes. They were approved as read. There were twenty three members, four adults and one visitor, Paul Herzog,present.

Treasurer Jennifer Gold gave the treasurer's report.

Our Youth Club dance is going to be held on February 7th and Texas Unlimited will play.

We had a bake sale on Friday, January 16th and made around $60.

We decided on taking the Junior Group to go and see "Song of the South" on Thursday, January 22nd.

We went to the Giddings Cinema, met at the hall at 7:15 p.m. and left at 7:30 p.m.

Door prizes were won by Wesley Ford -- 1st, Tony Ford -- 2nd, Drew

Davenport 3rd.

Our lodge meeting was held on January 11th at 2 p.m. We had 14 members and 4 adults present.

Old business discussed was our canned goods drive which we will continue until Easter.

Our new business was to have a Valentine cookie contest at our next meeting and a trip to the Rest Home in Mart.

After supper each family is to bring a dozen cookies.

We also will have cake walks January 17th and January 29th.

From The Youth Leaders Lodge 47, Seaton YC Activities Dear Members and Friends, The members of Lodge_ No. 47, Seaton _enjoyed a very interesting social visiting the SP JSI Museum on January 18th. Our special thanks to

Ms_ Thelma Bartosh for the educational and exciting tour.

February is planned to be a busy month for our youth. At our February 1st _monthly meeting, we will be making Valentine treats for the nursing home. On February 7th we will meet at Star Hall at 2 p.m. and travel to Cameron. We will visit with the residents of the Colonial Nursing Home and pass out our treats. _ February 15th _ is the District II skating party at Skate Haven. Hope to see you there for a fun afternoon of skating.

Dear Readers, We were very busy in December. On December 3rd, we helped decorate the lodge for Christmas; we also made Santa stockings and practiced our program.

On December 6th, we had our Lodge 66 Christmas party. We had a great time and enjoyed presenting our Christmas program.

We had our youth club meeting on December 22nd. There were fifteen members and one visitor, Kelly Scott, present. Kelly, come back and visit us again.

We had pizza and exchanged our gifts with Mr. Right. We also had a pinata that we all enjoyed very, much.

We ended our party with everYone

playing bingo. It was a great Christmas party.

At our meeting, we sent a $10 donation to the following: Cantos, Meals - on - Wheels, and Salvation Army. We also donated our food basket to the Family Abuse Center.

Our Santa stockings and fruit leftover from Christmas was also given to Family Abuse Center.

I want to wish everyone a happy New Year and invite you to come join in our youth club meetings and activities.

Sister Sladek was born April 26, 1909, in Williamson County, Texas.

She married Victor Steve Sladek on October 26, 1927, in Taylor. He preceded her in death on December 11, 1984.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral and had been a resident of San Angelo for 16 years.

Survivors include two daughters and sons - in - law, Doris and Johnny Kohutek of Miles and Joyce and Emmitt Hoelscher of San Angelo; one brother, Richard Kneblik of Pasadena; one sister, Sophie Bezenski of Houston; 10 grandchildren and 23 great - grandchildren.

Grandsons were pallbearers.

The family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 49 Rowena.

May she rest in eternal peace.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Rowena Lodge No. 49, wish to express our sincere sympathy, in behalf of our entire membership, to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother WILLIE DUSEK. Funeral services for Brother Willie Dusek, 81, of Lowake, Texas, were conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in the Chapel of Rains - Seale Funeral Home, whose directors completed arrangements. The Rev. Don Shepherd officiated. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Rowena.

Pallbearers included Bob Dusek, Calvin Dusek, Ed Dusek, Clifton Kotrla, Kenneth Doss, Gene Doss, Victor Zak and Bennie Schroeder.

The farmer - rancher died at 7:25 p.m. Wednesday in Shannon West Texas Memorial Hospital, San Angelo.

Brother Dusek was born 13 December 1904 in West, Texas and lived virtually his entire lifetime in the Lowake community.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Kvasnicka Dusek; a son and daughter in - law, Carlos and Linda Dusek and two grandchildren of Midkiff; two sisters, Hermina Hoch of San Angelo and Estelle Doss of Brownwood; two

brothers, Enman of San Angelo and M.A. Dusek of Ballinger.

A sister and brother preceded him in death.

Brother Dusek was a member of SPJST Lodge 49, Masonic Lodge 898 and the Lo wake Community Association.

Brother Zapalac was born in Wied (Lavaca County), Texas on November 30, 1894 to the late Charles and Mary (Kostelnik) Zapalac. He had been a resident of Jackson County since 1962 and was a retired farmer.

Brother Zapalac was a veteran of World War I, a member of SPJST and the St. Agnes Catholic Church of Edna.

He was preceded in death by his son, Johnny Zapalac, who died on May 20, 1977.

Surviving are his wife, Julia Zapalac of Ganado; two daughters, Julia Moore and Annie Mae Chanek, both of Ganado; a son, George Zapalac of Port Lavaca; eleven grandchildren and eleven great - grandchildren.

Hundreds of thousands of children fly alone each year to visit parents or other relatives, especially during the holidays. This advice could help relieve your anxieties: Make reservations, if possible, on a nonstop flight. Tell the reservations agent that your child will be traveling alone. Unaccompanied children are usually charged the full adult fare. Most airlines won't accept children under the age of 5.

Unaccompanied children between ages 5 and 8 will generally be accepted on flights involving no change of planes. They must be brought to the airport and met at the destination by responsible adults. Most airlines will help children who are 8 to 11 make connections--for a fee, typically $20.

Some airlines, have supervised lounges especially for youngsters waiting for connections at hub airports. Get your child to the airport well before departure time, and introduce the youngster to the ticket agent. Remind the agent if the child will need help changing planes. Lost or stolen tickets are negotiable, so make sure they are kept in a safe place. Also, be certain that your child has proper identification and cash for emergencies, including change for phone calls. ***
