Tuesday, January 6th your editor attended the quarterly meeting of our SPJST Supreme Lodge; while there, information was given that Brother Sid Pokladnik, District III director, was elected chairman of the Board of Directors and Brother Matt Vanek, District VI director, was elected vice chairman (Brother Stanley Broz, District IV director, having declined renomination). Good luck is wished to all for a prosperous 1987!

During the time the editor was present at the meeting, the report of SL Secretary/Treasurer Leonard Mikeska was presented and discussed very thoroughly and at length; his report, of course, deals with the finances of our SPJST Society, which involves rather involved knowledge of the fast - moving daily movements of investments, bonds, etc. A person can see, at firsthand, that Brother Mikeska, in conjunction with the other four Supreme Lcdge officers, are handling our SL finances/affairs, etc. fraternally, and in a conscientious business - efficient manner. Your editor, on the way home, left the meeting feeling satisfied about the way our Supreme Lodge affairs were being handled safely in these days of the stock market's rather "wild, unpredictable gyrations."

While attending the meeting, some of our officers and directors expressed the feeling that some groups do not get too involved in our SPJST lodges, yet, use our weekly Vestnik for publicity in promoting their affairs; to a certain extent, we have to agree! How about getting involved -- join and work in our SPJST lodges? They need your help! ***

The editor has been a member --subscriber of the National Geographic Society and Magazine for a great number of years. In the January 1987 issue, beginning on Page 120 is a nice, educational article (with colorful

photos and maps) written by Yva Momatiuk and John Eastcott. You may wish to read it. Libraries usually keep these magazines for reading purposes. *** Christmas was, of course, celebrated mostly with the religious theme, especially here in the United States, yet, history teaches us that the evergreen tree was honored and revered including the season of the winter solstice (at 11:05 p.m.

December 21, 1986), shortest day of the year, the time, the eclipse of the earth in its journey around the sun begins bringing more sun and daylight to our Northern Hemisphere and begins to bring us the hope of spring and plants, trees, etc. begin to turn green. May it bring us much hope!

New Year's Day -- a veritable football game4Natchers paradise, was accompanied by the Cotton Bowl Parade in Dallas and the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California.

While watching the Dallas parade, your editor could not help feeling proud of our West High School "Trojan" Band as they marched (only Texas band in the Cotton Bowl Parade) by the TV cameras under the superb direction of Mr. Jack Felts.

Congratulations, Mr. Felts and band members, some of them are SPJST members!

Your editor is not the greatest of football game "buffs" and found two interesting programs beside the parades that day -- one was "New Year's Day In Vienna" narrated by Walter Cronkite on PBS (it may be repeated in your area) and another was "Murrow" -- the life of Edward R. Murrow, a CBS commentator and correspondent during World War 11 in England and in the United States after the war during the Senator Joe McCarthy era and his stalwart stand for truthful reporting displayed at all times. His life was portrayed on HBO

by Daniel Travanti of "Hill Street Blues". (It was a one-time Special, however, may be rebroadcast.) *** The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently denied a petition which would have banned the use of the anti - arthritis drug piroxicam (trade name: Feldene) in people over 60 years of age. The petition was filed by the Public Citizen Health Research Group (HRG), and claimed that the drug causes an increased frequency of serious gastrointestinal side effects in older people.

The HHS decision not to ban use of the drug in older people was based on studies by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which found no basis for concluding that Feldene is more likely to lead to serious side effects in the elderly than other non steroidal anti - inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). *** The legal rights accorded women vary sharply from state - to - state, says a new guide from the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund. Several states, for example, have begun revising their pay policies to compensate women employes the same as men doing comparable work. One state -- Montana -- has granted women equality in insurance rates. Others provide for equal distribution of property after divorce. Among the states offering the most legal protections for women are Washington, Massachusetts, and New York. Bringing up the rear, according to the fund: Nevada, Mississippi, Alabama and South Carolina. ***

TO SPJST IRA OWNERS A change in the Law requires that IRA Contributions must be identified as, to the year for which a Deposit is to be applied.

This is most important during the period, January 1 through April 15, 1987 when IRA Contributions can be applied to the previous year (1986), or the current year (1987).

This change to properly report IRA Contributions is mandated

by IRS to verify the transaction through IRS Form 5498 filed by SPJST and, the Individual Income Tax Form 1040 Filing Return.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Meeting Dear Members: Our lodge met on Sunday, December 14, 1986 at the Grant Building. President Annie Vahalik called the meeting to order followed by the pledge to the U.S. Flag led by Gary and Janell Chudej and Trammer Woytek .

A resolution of sympathy for our departed member, Henry A. Spanihel was read by Gaye Galetka.

President Vahalik welcomed our new member and Sales Representative Mary Matula and her husband, Frank, to the meeting and our lodge.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the previous meeting which were approved.

Correspondence followed. Youth Leader Gayenell Chudej and Treasurer Helen Zabransky also reported their reports.

After a short discussion, the members voted to contribute $50 to the SPJST Child Abuse Program and $50 to the Hallettsville United Way Fund to help these worthy causes.

Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka then reported. The meeting was adjourned. The SPJST Czech video was shown and enjoyed very much by everyone. It was very interesting and informative.

Co - Youth Leaders Evelyn Holy and Gayenell Chudej had the hall gaily decorated for Christmas. They led the members in singing Christmas carols and then Santa Claus made a surprise

visit. Santa was warmly greeted by everyone. He handed out the gifts and baskets of fruit and candy for the officers. Santa, assisted by Evelyn and Gayenell, visited and gave an apple to each member. The rest of the afternoon was spent visiting and playing games.

Refreshments and lunch were served and enjoyed. The door prize was won

by Alvin Mikush, Jr. Our next meeting will be on Sunday, January 11, 1987.

I hope everyone had a nice Christmas and best wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year.

6, Cottonwood Meeting

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting was opened at 1 p.m.

The first item on our agenda was installation of SPJST Lodge 6 officers

by Brother Jerry Mikulas from the Supreme Lodge of Temple. After that the meeting was called to order on Sunday, January 4th at 1 p.m. by President Johnnie Krizan.

The pledge was recited by Shirley Dobecka and her niece, Tammi Dobecka. The SPJST Pledge was then said by Shirley Dobecka plus all members and visitors. All remained standing in memory of our departed Sister Mary Kazda of Abbott who passed away on December 12, 1986.

Our sympathy to her family.

Next, the president introduced and welcomed our visitors, Brother Jerry Mikulas from Supreme Lodge and District III Director Brother Sid Pokladnik.

Reading of the minutes from our last meeting by Secretary Barbara Hykel followed and they were approved, also all other officers' reports were given and were approved.

Wednesday, January 14, 1987-VĚSTNÍK/5 Youth Leader Sister Willie Mae Schuetz who expressed her thanks and appreciation to all who helped decorate the hall for our Christmas party and taking the decorations down. She will have more on this in her report in the youth leader's news.

At this time, the president called on Brother Jerry Mikulas if he wished to say a few words; he accepted explaining different kinds of life insurance coverage and the refund checks -- how to be used as you wished. His talk was very interesting and understood. Our thanks and also for coming.

Then, the president called on Brother Sid Pokladník, our District III director, who gave us a few inspiring words, stating he was glad to be with us and seeing us and the good work we are doing in the lodge and keeping the hall nice and looking good. His special remarks were about President Johnnie Krizan losing weight and looking good; he said he wished he could lose some of it, too. (I think he looks good as he is!) Thanks for coming, Sid. The only regret to report is that didn't have the good attendance usually do. I guess some of members stayed home resting after holidays.

Vice President Robert Dobecka spoke and asked the membership if they would like to have dinner served at the lodge before our monthly meetings since the meeting starts at 1 p.m , Motion was made and seconded to have the dinner each month before our meeting, so let's remember this brothers, sisters and friends.

Still a little bit about our Christmas party that was well - 'attended; the program, supper and all were enjoyed by all, especially the visit from "Ole" Santa Nick thrilling all the kiddos by distributing fruit and candy bags to all youth and adult members and guests.

After Santa said "good - bye," all were ready for the gifts that were under the pretty big tree to be passed out to them and to some adults; in a few minutes, there was a mess of wrappings on the hall floor, with happy faces. Thanks go to all donors.

Winner of the $2 door prize was Sister Annie Schroeder. Names drawn on progressive prizes were Brother Larry Joe Filer ($10), and Brother Terry Hykel ($10). Starting on a third prize for $1 will be at the next meeting.

At this time a motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting. Our next meeting will be held on Sunday,

February 1st at.l p.m.; also dinner will be served before the meeting at 12 noon.

Brother Bill Souchek has graciously volunteered his time to teach the Czech language at Lodge No. 88. Classes will be held in the dining area from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the following dates: February 2, 16, 23 March 2, 16, 23, 30 April 6, 20, 27 The only cost involved is the purchase of the textbook.

The Vrazels will be playing for the dance on Saturday, January 17.

On Friday, January 23, the big band music of Russ Morgan will be featured. Admission for this dance is $20 per couple. The kitchen will be open for the evening.

The Knights of Dixie will perform on Saturday, January 24, featuring ballroom and variety music.

The annual meeting was held on Sunday, December 14, 1986, and the following members were elected to their respective capacities: President -- Jerome J. Santa Claus made an appearance and bags of fruit were distributed. The Lodge No. 88 Choral Group and Orchestra also performed.

It is with deep regret to report the death of Mrs. Emma Runge, mother of Sister Shirley Stonaker, who passed away on December21, 1986, at the age of 83 years. Also, Brother Lee Hegwood, father of Brother King Hegwood, passed away in a nursing home in Woodville, Texas on December 23, 1986, at the age of 83 years. Our deepest sympathy is extended to these families and may the dearly departed rest in peace.

The Blue Room Christmas party was held on December 21 with a large . attendance. The dancing music was

'Lodge 172, Pasadena I would like to say, to all of you members of Lodge 172, that I hope all of you enjoyed the holidays, and especially those of you who live away from this area and cannot take part in our lodge activities.

Our annual meeting was held on December 17th and our new officers for the coming year were elected. Theiss We sincerely hope that all our members will be pleased with this selection and give them your full support throughout the coming year.

I am pleased to report to you that your lodge ended this year in a very satisfactory financial condition and that the lodge recently passed the City Health Inspection at 100 percent. We have several people who give lots of their time and effort in making the lodge what it is and keeping it in a clean and workable condition, for which we are all thankful.

We had two VIPs at our annual meeting, namely, Brothers Louis Hanus and Jerry Prochazka. Louis Hanus is one of the top sales people in District V and we were happy to have him visit, and we are always happy to have Jerry drop in for a visit.

We voted on several changes in our Rules and Regulations and all were passed as recommended. We will have copies available in the near future.

Jerry Dressler and his workers want to do some landscaping around the lodge and, if you have some small trees you don't need, we would appreciate it if you will dig them up and let the lodge know so we can make

arrangements to plant them. I am donating three oak trees. If you would like to buy one and donate it as a gift, that would be great!

Our Christmas and New Year's parties were nothing lessthan great. At our Christmas party we had a covered dish meal before the dance and the food was really outstanding. Needless 1 to say, we all overate, which, to my way of thinking, is what a covered dish meal is all about. Afterwards, a good time was had by all for dancing.

Our New Year's party couldn't have been better. The "Texas Brew" outdid themselves in playing good music and we had close to 900 people attending.

The Entertainment Committee and their helpers did an outstanding job of decorating and providing hats, horns and other New Year's paraphernalia to everyone. Cornbread, blackeyed peas and sausage were served at midnight and we heard many remarks about the quickness of getting served as well as the goodness of the food. It sure makes you feel good to be a part of showing that many people a good time on New Year's Eve. Some of our regulars have moved and didn't get to be with us. Albert and Tommie and Monty and Mary, happy New Year and we missed you!

We want to extend our prayers and sympathy to Henrietta Krenek i11 the loss of her mother, Albina Bobolí .md also to William Moseley who lost his mother, Bessie Moseley, in recent weeks. May you take some comfort in knowing they have gone to a better place. · We also want to extend our thoughts and wishes to the members who are ill: Heather Chandler, Lucille Jackson, Doug Wiley, Tommie Wallace, Mark Barcley and Michelle Moore. We understand that Mark and Michelle are both feeling better at this time, and we certainly hope so. We also want to send our wishesthat Margie Hrabina's health problem, for which she is undergoing tests, will be nothing serious.

The following members have undergone surgeries of different types in recent weeks and are now on the mend: Tennie Walla, John Hausler, J.V. Thomas, Joyce Glass, Dan Berry and Frank Adams. We wish for them all a full recovery and as quickly as possible.

Czech Classes Planned At Lodge· 88, Houston Whoever is interested in studying Czech is welcomeat SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston.

We completed a very satisfactory term of study ín December and, requests were made to begin another series. The lodge has set aside every Monday at 7:30to 9:30p.m. beginning February 2. With the exception of the lodge meeting nights, alwaysscheduled for the second Monday of each month, we shall adhere to the following times: February 2, 16, 23 March 2, 16, 23, 30 April 6, 20, 27 You are invited to come and refresh your memories beginning with the tenses during our first lesson.

Czech Language Classes At TJC The following credit courses in the Czech language are being offered at Temple Junior College for the coming spring semester. They are as follows: DAY CLASSES Czech 1614.01 Beginning Czech I (4 hours credit) and Czech 1712.01 Beginners Czech I (2 hours credit) on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. The lab for the first course only is Wednesdays from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

EVENING CLASSES Czech 1712.02 Beginners Czech I (2 hours credit) on Tuesday from 7:00 to 9:50 p.m. Czech 2613.01 Intermediate Czech I (3 hours credit) on Thursday from 7:00 to 9:50 p.m.

The last day of regular registration will be Wednesday, January 14th, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Registration is alphabetical so you will need to call (817) 773 - 9961 - Extension 212 for your registration time or for other information.

Sewing Circle

We welcome 1987 with hope that it will be a good one for everyone. The year 1986 was a busy one with the Texas Sesquicentennial celebrations throughout the year. Have you made any New Year's resolutions and/or have they already been broken?

The Ennis Sewing Circle met November 13th and December 11th. I will report some of the news from both meetings.

President Sadie Kubin presided at both meetings. All the other officers gave their report. Visitors at our meeting were Julia Harris, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Noska, Bob Zvolanek, Joe Houdek, Leslie Vrla and Julius Podhrasky.

After the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, a few moments of silence were observed in memory of Sister Annastazie Jurcik. A thank you note was read from Charlie Jurcik and family for flowers for Sister Jurcik's funeral.

Sister Alice Roberts was the lucky winner of the quilt donated by the Circle. I appreciate all the work done by the sisters who did the quilting.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to November birthday sisters. They were Annie Jaska, Mary Kopecek, Rose Ann Parma, Vlasta Parma, Betty Slovacek, Mildred Trojacek and Millie Vytopil.

There were twenty - three members and seven visitors present.

We had a very nice December meeting. First we had the regular order of business, followed by luncheon and then we exchanged gifts. The turkey and ham were furnished by the Circle.

Turkeys were cooked by Sisters Kubin and Zabojnik; the dressing by Sisters Bednar, Podhrasky and Zvolanek.

Sisters Georgia Tupy and Libbie Wisniewski decorated the tables.

Our guests were Bertha Malik, Libbie Elsik, Julia Harris, Milan Dujka, Jerry Kohn, Wesley Tupy, Bob Zvolanek, Julius Podhrasky and Leslie Vrla.

Sister Wisniewski, our sunshine chairman, sent Christmas greetings to sisters who are not able to attend the meetings.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to December Birthday Sisters Agnes Dujka, Bettie Houdek, Vojteska Janicek, Vickie Kohn, Bettie Marusak and Ludie Nesuda.

Charlie Jurcik and family sent a thank you note for the memorials for Sister Jurcik. A Christmas greeting was received from Sister Ludie Nesuda who now resides with her daughter in Mesquite, Texas. Sister Lillie Hejny sent her regards. Membership books were distributed. There was no quilting.

We voted to keep the same officers for next year.

At our March 12th meeting at 10:30 a.m., David Podhrasky will show video tapes of "PODLUZAN," the Czech musicians from Czechoslovakia. Free offering will be given to the CHAIR. (Put this date on your calendar!)

A speedy recovery is wished to all our sick folks -- Bill Foit, husband of Sister Doris Foit, who is recuperating from hip surgery. My husband, Tom, suffered a stroke early Thanksgiving morning. He is in Baylor Institute For Rehabilitation, progressing very slowly.

Sisters Mary Kopecek and Sophia Holey visited Sister Kopecek's son in California in November.

Our next meeting will be on February 12th. We will not have a meeting in January.

Take good care of yourselves. Don't let the "flu" bug bite you!

who passed away Sunday, November 30, 1986 at 4:30 p.m. at the Stevens Convalescent Center in Hallettsville, at the age of 84 years.

Brother Spanihel was born August 26, 1902, in Lavaca County, Texas to Mr. Rudolph Spanihel and Annie (Katura) Spanihel. He was married to Rosie Schaefer on 12 November 1923, at Hallettsville; she died on October 25, 1984.

Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart Church in Hallettsville at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3rd.

The body was taken from the Kubena Funeral Home to the church at 2:30 p.m. Interment was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Rose Klekar of Houston and Mrs. Gertrude Henneke of Tomball; one brother, Rudolph Spanihel of Eagle Lake; one sister, Mrs. Annie Rainosek of Hallettsville; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Sister Zalesky was preceded in death by her husband, John Zalesky in 1937 and a son, Arthur Zalesky in 1963.

Survivors include one daughter, Irene Raska of Cameron; one sister, Mary Krenek of Cameron; two grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one great - great grandchild.

12/VESTMK—Wednesday, January 14, 1987 observance of the Bicentennial warrants more than balloons and candles.

Americans everywhere are developing many ways to celebrate.

This is important, because the success of the Bicentennial depends mainly on local and regional efforts. Some activities are scheduled only for 1987, while others will begin in 1986 and continue through 1991, the year the Bill of Rights was ratified.

The easiest way for you to get involved in these anniversary celebrations is to work through a local Bicentennial commission in your state, county, city or town. If there is no commission near you, here is the opportunity to insure that you and others in your area take part in the commemoration.

Forming a Commission The Commission on the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution in Washington, D.C., serves as a clearinghouse for the nation's commemorative activities. One of its main functions is to guide and encourage the formation of state and local commissions, which will organize the various regional events.

There are several ways to establish a state commission. The state legislators can create a special committee to oversee Bicentennial preparations, or it can assign this responsibility to an existing state office or organization.

The governor's office and the state supreme court can also establish commissions. Here are some examples of how this has been done: In Alabama, the Humanities Foundation has officially been designated the coordinator of Bicentennial observances in the state.

The California Bicentennial Commission was established through state legislation to develop a calendar of events for the next five years.

The Illinois Supreme Court has created the Committee to Commemorate the U.S. Constitution in Illinois, which is acting as a Bicentennial clearinghouse for observances throughout the state.

The Kentucky Department of Education has been officially designated to oversee activities in that state.

The Office of the Secretary of State is handling Bicentennial plans in Michigan.

In Utah, the Governor's Commission on Law and Citizenship was established by executive decree to coordinate Bicentennial celebrations.

The National Commission has model legislation, executive orders and proclamations available for use in creating a state commission. If you are either unsure of the status in your state or you need the sample documents, contact the Commission in Washington. Once a commission has been established, the governor or state legislature should then notify the National Commission to be officially recognized.

To form a county, city or other local Bicentennial Commission, the process is similar. An organization or agency can be given the responsibility of coordinating the activities in your community, or a local official can establish the commission through legislation or by proclamation. To receive official recognition, as well as permission to use the official Bicentennial logo, the local Commission must apply for approval from its State Commission. Once approved, the local commission then applies to the National Commission.

The application process is usually

quick, as there are few requirements.

The local commission membership should be broad - based and representative of the population at large; it should be duly authorized by local officials; and the commission should have a good idea of what it wants to accomplish. It need not be funded at its inception, but it should have a plan for raising funds for an operating budget.

The Commission in Washington receives ideas for projects from groups and individuals around the nation and makes the information available to those interested. A number of states and localities have already started planning Bicentennial events. To give you an idea of what some of them are doing, here is a partial list of projects.

Next Step: Staffing the Commission The Commission is usually a board comprised of government, business, education and civic leaders. The number of commissioners might range from 5 to 25, led by a chairman, usually a high - ranking official, such as the chief justice of the state, the head of a state agency, a member of the legislature, or a prominent citizen.

The selection of a staff director or program coordinator will vary. An existing state agency or organization which is overseeing Bicentennial activities may use its own employees and officials, while a newly - created commission might hire an executive director or find an experienced volunteer. The person responsible for organizing and leading the staff should be someone with a record in other government, business or community projects. Delaware is planning to pay tribute to a local patriot who was prominently involved in the adoption of the Constitution: As part of its observance of the Bicentennial, it will complete restoration of the John Dickinson plantation and produce a film about the statesman.

Illinois will hold a re - enactment of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 in the old State Capitol Building in Springfield.

Maryland will commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Annapolis Convention, which helped the foundation for the Constitution, with an 18th - Century fair, performances of a commemorative play, and an Army - sponsored event at Fort Meade which will include the assembling of 18th - Century militias, a mock battle, band concerts and exhibits.

New Hampshire plans a traveling exhibit on patterns of town development in that state between 1780 and 1800, and a theater production on New Hampshire's ratification of the Constitution.

Pennsylvania school children will visit a Bicentennial mobile museum.

Virginia will offer a statewide public awareness campaign, using public service time on radio and television, to highlight key provisions of the Constitution, and to remind citizens of the important role of Virginians in the drafting of the Constitution and the formation of the new government.

Where to Find Resources

Local Programs

Local commissions, like the National Commission, probably will have limited resources in people, time and money. You will have to depend on the assistance and expertise of other organizations and institutions to launch a successful Bicentennial celebration. Teachers and students, religious groups, unions and business groups, corporations, civic organizations and professional associations --- all can play a major role.

These groups can help you initially by providing volunteers in the staff offices and at the various Bicentennial events. Students may wish to offer their time for the work experience.

Other forms of assistance might include the donation of office space, supplies and equipment and the use of business and institutional facilities for the distribution of material.

After establishing the local Commission, a well - planned program of activities will be your next step. It is the key to a successful celebration.

Philadelphia will be the focal point for the Bicentennial of the Constitution, since it was there on September 17, 1787, that it was signed.

The local Commission --- We the People 200 ---are planning a large number of events, such as a recreation of the Grand Federal Procession of 1787, special exhibits, concerts and balls. On the evening of September 17, 1987, a gala will be held at the city stadium, including fireworks and other festivities.

The Commission for Knoxville and Knox County, Tennessee, will conduct public forums on various constitutional issues and will also publish a series of articles in local newspapers on what the Constitution means to Americans today.

Public and private schools in South Bend, Indiana, will organize Bicentennial exhibits and sponsor poetry, music, story and theater contests among their students.

Mesa, Arizona --- with a Citizens' Constitution Week Committee that has prepared a program of celebration for the Constitution's birthday every year since 1970 --- is scheduling a variety of events for 1987, including concerts of patriotic music, lectures and fireworks.

An extensive program by the local Commission in San Diego for 1986 and several tennis 1987 includes tournaments dedicated to the anniversary, a commemorative ball, a Bicentennial Parade of Ships in San Diego Harbor and a Bicentennial 10 kilometer run.

A growing number of cities across the country, including Garfield

Heights, Ohio; Hamilton, New Jersey; Pleasanton, Mesquite, Texas; Biloxi, Mississippi; California; Richland, Washington; Fridley, Minnesota; St. Joseph, Missouri; Evanston, Illinois; and Portsmouth, Virginia, have issued proclamations declaring September 17, 1987, "United States Constitution Day," and are preparing to celebrate accordingly.

State Programs Other Ideas

Getting Involved: Planning Activities For The Bicentennial Should the Bicentennial be observed solemnly or festively? Obviously, the occasion calls for both approaches, since there are as many ways to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Constitution as there are individuals and organizations willing to assist and sponsor activities.

The following is a list of additional ideas for Bicentennial activities that any local Commission or group can organize: Reaffirming the Constitution.

Americans everywhere can reaffirm the principles of the Constitution by setting up programs to have their national and state leaders re - enact the signing of the document in special ceremonies, coinciding with parades and other events.

Creation of State and National Holidays. The National Commission supports the creation of a one - time National holiday on September 17, 1987. We urge you to do the same in your state. Cities can participate, too, by proclaiming September 17 "U.S. Constitution Day." The National Commission can provide an official proclamation form.

Ratifying the Constitution. Whether yours was one of the original states to ratify the Constitution or not, all 50 states can commemorate the dates they sought entry into the Union and were officially accepted. Thus, each state can have its own, unique celebration on those dates.

Celebrations at Historic Sites.

Historic sites related to the founding of the nation, the lives of the founding fathers, and the origins of the states abound in the U.S., where states and cities can arrange celebrations.

Living Memorials. The Bicentennial offers an excellent opportunity to establish living memorials across the nation, dedicated to local heroes and historic events. States and local groups can plant trees, create new public parks and refurbish historic sites.

Bicentennial Festivals State and County Fairs. State and county fairs are held in every state, offering a perfect setting for celebrating the Bicentennial.

Educational booths can be set up, or mobile museums, to display items of the United States. There might be re enactments of the debate about the Constitution, and booths where people could meet "George Washington," "James Madison" and "Alexander Hamilton."

Film Festival. Libraries can offer movie festivals, directed at all ages, featuring educational films and slides depicting the founding of the nation and the lifestyle of early Americans.

Colonial Fair. An 18th Century fair, with authentic early American music, food, crafts and dress, might be held.

Ethnic Fair. In a celebration of America's cultural diversity, various ethnic groups in a community can join together.in holding a fair, which would include music and food from the various cultures. Different booths could be set up for each group, to explain what each brought to America and, in turn, what America gave to them. The emphasis would be on the significance of the Constitution and its basic freedoms and rights to those who emigrated to this nation over the past two centuries.

Sestry a bratfi.

V nedeli, 21.prosince 1986, byla konana posledni scheze na geho fadu v tomto roce. Zaeli jsme s podavanim bohateho obeda ve 12 hodin 30 minut.

Navg teva byla velmi pekna, celkem 75, veetne deti. Sestra Thelma Hrneifova, feditelka VII.okrsku a jeji mantel, Eugene Hrneif, poctili nas svoji navg tevou. Vic o torn dale v teto zpravu.

Pfedseda fadu, bratr Anthony Trilidek, zahajil schfizi, pfivital pfitomne a hned jsme pfikroeili k jednani. Po slibu vernosti vlajce a vzpomince zesnuljrch elene tajemnik fadu, bratr Dominik F. Netek, pfeeet1 svoji zpravu, ktera byla pfijata beze zmeny. Nato pfeeet1 podekovani Lillien Claussove, za projev soustrasti nad timrtim jeji rnatky Emilie Amburnove. Nasledovala zprava fin.tajemnice, sestry Kathy Uribeova, rovne2 byla pfijata nezmenena. Sestra Uribeova se pak vzdalila, aby pfipravila deti pro chystanjr program.

Sestra Alma Triliekova, pfedsedkyne zabavniho vjrboru, podala svoji podrobnou zpravu. Bylo plijato jak steno.

Sestra Marcella M. Kleprlikova oznamila, 2e man2ele Otto a Jane Hurtovi letos oslavuji svoje 47.vjrroe'i, mantels J. a Kathy Uribeovi oslavuji svoje 6.vjrroei. Letos obdr2elo corsage celkem 7 manielskjch pare. V zaveru pak pfala v gem mnoho gtesti v pfigtim roce. Dale pak sestra Kleprlikova oznamila, 2e sestra Mildred Strobelova je po operaci, eeka ji deg operate.

Spoleene s bratrem William J. Maregem a sestrou Stellou Maregovou ji navg tivili v nemocnici. Sestra Viola Kurtzova. oznamila, 2e jeji vnuk, 26 lets' Edward Mazae, je velmi va2ne

nemocen. Pfedseda fadu, bratr Antho0 Trilieek projevil politovani a nemocnemu peal brzke uzdraveni.

Rozpfedla se velmi Iiva debata o t.z. vpfimem tletovini. 0 veci promluvila podrobne sestra Thelma Hrneifova, feditelka sedmeho okrsku. Debaty se ztieastnili: Emil E. Mattila, Dominik F. Netek, Viola Kurtzova, Viola Fajkusova, Alvin Schimeek. Bylo rozhodnuto, aby o veci bylo dale jednano v nagi pfigti schezi. Navrh podal bratr Alvin Schimeek, podporovala sestra Viola Fajkusova.

Sestra Thelma Hrneifova k tomu dodala, 2e bude o veci jednat a pak nam oznarni.

Pro rok 1987 byli jmenovani na tieetni vjrbor: sestry Viola Kurtzova, Evelyn Matulova a bratr Joe Stryk.

Pfedseda, bratr Anthony Trilieek, podekoval sestfe Hrneifove za ochotu a vgem pfal mnoho zdaru v praci.

Bratr Trilieek podekoval bratru Dominiku F. Netkovi za jeho vzornou praci tajemnika fadu po dobu 13 let a odevzdal mu nadhernou plaketu. Bratr Netek podekoval a dodal, 2e pracoval rad a ie i naddle bude inn pro fad a SPJST. Pfal vgem vesele svatky vanoeni a gfastnjr novj rok.

Dalgi plaketu odevzdal pfedseda fadu, bratr Trilieek, mne za dopisovatelskou sluibu do Ceske easti Vestniku po dobu 13 let. Mile pfekvapen jsem podekoval za uznani a nova dopisovatelce, sestfe Miloslave Phelpsove, jsem pfal mnoho zdaru.

Jsem rad, 2e !name velmi schopnou dopisovatelku pro eeskou east Vestniku, je toho velmi zapotfebi. Je to eegtiny ye Vestniku poskrovnu a kdy2 o tom pigi, chci upozornit na velmi hodnotne a pouene elanky ye Vestniku, ktere pige bratr John J. Karas z Houstonu. Vyueuje tee eatine v reznjrch mistech a zajadi i do nagich SPJST, mist, nedavno bylo tomu tak na symposiu Ceske hudby v Bryan, Texasu, kde mel pfedna gku na tema Pavel Kffikovskjr, hudebni skladatel Moravy, jak je oti gteno ye Vestniku.

Chceme-li udflet narodni dedictvi musime se sna2it vic mluvit Cesky, eist a take zpivat na ge pfekrasne pisne.

Bratr Karas zasluhuje uznani a dik za jeho namahavou praci! Je na nas,

V mesici prosinci oslavuji svoje narozeniny Bob Popp, Jenovefa Schultzova, Mary Poppova, Frank Fajkus, Viola Kurtzova, Anna B. Riley, Emil Rohan, Grace Rohanova a J. Bienek. Vgichni ale nebyli pfitomni.

Vgem jsme zazpivali "Happy Birthday", pogratulovali a porozpraveli.

Sestra Thelma Hrneifova osobne podelovala gfastlivce darky, ktere darovala, na6e2 bylo losovani: 1.vjhra pfipadla-Mary Poppova, 2.cenaAlbinu Poppovi, 3.cena-Helene Pendletonove a 4.cena-SteIle Maregove.

Po vyeerpani v geho scheze byla ukoneena a nasledovala detska nadilka. Pfi pfijemne zabave bylo pak pfatelsky debatovano ph spoleeenske hfe.
