Read the THEME INFORMATION on Page 3 because time is short! *** There are two letters in this issue which you may wish to read with interest -- one by Brother Kevin Hannan and one by Sister Naomi Kostom Spencer. They give a very good insight into the friendly meetings with regular citizens of Moravia in Czechoslovakia and Texas in the United States. This certainly proves that ordinary people can get along much better without politics. *** Every year, you are sure to hear someone say, "I just cannot seem to aet the Christmas spirit!"

Just what is the Christmas spirit?

Here is what some writers have to say about it.

Back in 1897, a tamed editorial used the figure of Santa Claus to exemplify the Christmas spirit. "Yes, Virginia," wrote Francis P. Church, editor of the New York Sun, "there is a Santa Claus...He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give your life its highest beauty and joy."

Charles Dickens captured the spirit of Christmas in his description of Ebenezer Scrooge's overnight change from an unhappy miser to a generous. employer: "A Merry Christmas, Bob!" said Scrooge with an earnestness that could not be mistaken, as he clapped him on the back. "A merrier Christmas, Bob, my good fellow, than I have given you for many a year. I'll raise your salary, and endeavor to assist your struggling family, and we will discuss your affairs this very afternoon, over a Christmas bowl of smoking bishop, Bob." The youngsters caroling for senior citizens at a convalescent home...the shopper who takes time to wish the harried clerk "Merry Christmas"...the church members collecting food and clothing to take to less fortunate neighbors...the co - worker who invites a lonely bachelor to share a family dinner.

A sentiment expressed on the most popular Christmas card signed in the 1800s summarizes this spirit well. "I am thinking of you today because it is Christmas, and I wish you happiness.

And tomorrow, because it will be ,the day after Christmas, I shall still wish you happiness; and so on clear throughout the year."

Going back even further, a friar wrote this greeting in 1513: "The gloom of the world is but a shadow, behind it, yet within our reach is joy.

Take joy...and so at this Christmas time I greet you, with the thought that for you, now and forever the day breaks and the shadows flee away."

Christmas shoppers discouraged by the quality of toys you find on the store shelves this year, take heart.

Amid all of the faddish products are lots of educational toys, too. Some help kids deal with real - life situations, such as coping with strangers and living with chronic ailments. Others use new technology to teach age - old fairy tales.

Recognizing that many children spend a lot of time on their own, away from a parent's gaze, toy makers offer several games designed to teach basic safety rules. Let's Be Safe, from Milton Bradley, guides youngsters age 5 to 8 through risky situations around home and school. The game requires children to match situation cards with solution cards. To be resolved are such quandaries as: What do you do when a stranger comes to your door and no one else is home? What if you are asked into the home of an adult you don't know? For children too young to read, Mattel offers Safe 'N Sound.

This string - operated machine, part of the See 'N Say line, plays messages such as, "I never cross the street alone; I always hold a grown - up's hand."

Safety Home is a board game that teaches lessons on personal safety to children as young as age 4. You win if your character collects the most tokens between school and home by answerin g questions on game cards.

Questions involve such situations as learning telephone area codes, going places with a buddy and remembering to "yell, run and tell" if accosted. *** Merry Christmas In Many Languages: Christmas greetings are universal, but the languages in which they are expressed are varied indeed.

In France, for instance, you would be greeted with "Joyeux Noel!" you are in Italy at Christmas time, you will be greeted with "Buon Natale."

Germans, on the other hand, will wish you "Frohliche Weihnachten."

Norwegians say, "Gledelig Jul! In Czech, the greetings are expressed with .. Vesele Vanoce!"

In Bulgaria, it's "Chestita Koleda!"

Croatians wish you "Sretan Bojic!"

A Welshman will greet you with "Nadolig Llawen!"

In Mexico, it's "Feliz Navidad!"

Both the Portuguese and Brazilians share the same greetings: "Boas Festas!"

In Poland, you would be greeted with "Weselych Swiat!"

The Irish say, "Nodlaig Mhaith Chugnat!"

However, differently it is expressed, the wish is always the same throughout the world: "Merry Christmas!" *** Fraternal Questionnaire --- Each year the National Fraternal Congress of America issues a request for information on the Fraternal Activities and Expenditures of its member society subordinate units. Distribution of the Questionnaires will be in the near future. We ask that you make an extra effort to get your subordinate units to comply with this request. This information is very important to the NFCA, its Law Committee and the Fraternal Benefit System.

H is always cheaper to buy generic drugs rather than those with brand names, right? Usually, that's the case, but it depends upon where you shop, according to a recent article in the "Journal of the American Medical Association." JAMA studied 900,000 prescriptions in 1,400 pharmacies and found that while pharmacies pay less for generic than for brand - name drugs, the prices they charge consumers vary enormously.

Occasionally, consumers end up paying more for the generics than they would for brand - name drugs. The best advice for consumers, the study found, is to shop around for the best price without regard to whether the drug is generic or brand name.

From The President's Office SPJST Sponsors Theme Contest The SPJST Supreme Lodge Board has authorized a theme contest for SPJST members 18 years and older.

The selected theme would be used on all 1987 publications concerning the Society. The winner will be selected by the Supreme Lodge Board at the January meeting and will receive a monetary award of $100.

The theme should be brief, concise and reflective of the Society and its endeavors.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Meeting Dear Readers: Our annual meeting was held on December 7, 1986. Shirley and Tammi Dobecka led the membership with the Pledge of Allegiance.

All reports were given and approved.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz reported the youth club donated to the St. Mary's Day Care, Caritas, paper to.

West School, and to Sokol. They had a hayride and hot dogs. Sister Schuetz thanked Karen and Ronnie Kroll for I urnishing the tractor and trailer. They took cakes to the rest home. They decorated the hall on December 5th.

They will take gifts to the rest home on December 21. Those having birthdays this month are Kevin Mach and Becky Mynar. Tammi Dobecka brought the cake. Sister Schuetz received a thank you from the St. Mary's Day Care.

Sister Schuetz reported those on the sick list are Diane Berger, Stella Perez and Lydia Krizan.

President Krizan reported that the trustees voted to cut some of the mesquite trees around the hall down.

We had one new member. Welcome!

The door prize winners were Raymond Marek $2 door prize.

Brother Bruce Gerik's name was drawn for the $10 progressive door prize, and Brother Raymond Matus' name was drawn for the $9 progressive prize. Since they were not present, we will have three $10 door prizes.

The next meeting will be on January 4. 1987 at 1 p.m. Lunch will be served before the meeting at 12 noon.

The Board of Trustees' meeting will be on January 2nd at .7:30 p.m.

Rowena Lodge 49 Officers Installed Dear Members and Friends: This is a brief summary of the year 1986 of our accomplishments and activities.

In our November 5th meeting, the following officers were re - elected by acclamation for 1987: President -- Elizabeth Walther Vice President -- James Teplicek Secretary -- Joanie Halfmann Financial Secretary -- Beverly Teplicek Youth Leader -- Linda Urbanek Newly - elected reporter is Miss Pauline Shiller.

Following the business meeting, District IV Director Stanley Broz installed the officers.

The first business meeting of 1987 will be held on the first Wednesday, February 4th at 6:30 p.m. in the Rowena SPJST Lodge Hall.

Our Christmas party was December 12th at 6:30 p.m. at the lodge hall. In lieu of gift exchange, each member brought one can of food, which was distributed among the needy. The ladies brought salads, vegetables and desserts.

Entertainment of the evening. after the dinner was domino and card games.

Other activities in 1986 were as follows: Four regular meetings, two called meetings, and four flea markets; barbecue sandwiches, sausage and sauerkraut sandwiches were sold.

April 19th and 20th we, again, took an active part in celebrating the Sesquicentennial Ethnic Festival in Ballinger, by setting up our Czech food booth, and selling 250 dozen kolache. We never have trouble disposing of them! For a number of years we ran out of kolache the first day. All these dozens of kolache were baked in the hall kitchen by approximately 15 members and friends.

Lodge No. 49 hosted the District IV meeting on April 27th. The Runnels County 4 - H awards were held in the hall on October 4th, also baseball tournaments were held on the grounds in July and August.

Improvements in the hall this year were the paneling of the foyer, one screen door, two fire safety emergency lights, and three additional ceiling fans were installed.

Four dinners for bereaved families, and a number of private parties were held in the lodge hall.

Lodge No. 49 wishes everyone a happy, prosperous and healthy New Year!

Lodge 63 Annual Meeting/Christmas Social Sweet Home Lodge No. 63 will hold its regular monthly meeting and social on December 21st at the Sweet Home Firemen's Hall beginning at 1:30 p.m. This is a very important meeting because election of officers will be held and committees appointed.

The meeting will be followed by the drawing of door prizes and someone with a birthday in October, November or December will win a birthday cake baked by Vlasta Jurica.

As usual at our Christmas social, gifts will be exchanged by those who

bring gifts. The price range is $2 to $2.25 and there will be separate boxes for ladies and men. Fruit will be given to the children.

The exchanging of gifts will be followed by games and a lunch.

Everyone is asked to bring something to serve at the lunch. Drinks will be furnished.

Be sure to mark this very important meeting and social on your calendar.

Get in the spirit of Christmas and come visit with your friends.

Helen has been active in the youth club serving as an assistant for 3 years and King and Helen worked the Teen dances. She is a member of the Choral Group and The Dramatic Club and is ever ready to burst into song when needed. She says one of her big thrills was being able to sing The National Anthem in The Astrodome.

We here at Lodge No. 88 wish to thank Helen and King and their family for being loyal lodge supporters. They are proud of their lodge and we in turn are very proud of them.

Merry Christmas

December 18th is Turkey Give Away Night at Bingo. The birds are extra prizes given away at intermission.

The Christmas Blue Room party is Sunday, December 21st starting at 4 p.m. Music is by The Central Texas Sounds, formally The Ellinger Combo. Cocktails, dinner, and the dance are all included in the ticket price of $10. Get your tickets now in the lodge office no later than December 17th.

New Year's Eve tickets are on sale, also. Tickets are $25 per couple. This is always a complete sellout so if you are planning to attend, you had better buy those tickets now. Ray Jurecka's orchestra will play from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m .

Starting January 1, 1987 all Saturday night dances will start at 8:30 p.m . Reservations will be held for 30 minutes only unless the committee is notified otherwise. Tickets are still $4 each or $3 with your membership cards and it's still BYOB with all set - ups and beer sold in the bar area.

Saturday, December 20th, The Knights of Dixie play in the Chandelier Ballroom.

The year is fast coming to a close and I have several officers to feature in my letters. I'll proceed this time with Guide Helen Hegwood. Helen Marie was born to Joe and Mary Fusig in the Heights area of Houston. Joe and Mary, and brother Joe and Helen attended many lodge functions long before this lodge building was built.

Helen attended All Saints School and Incarnate Word High School, some courses at University of Houston, and graduated from Massey Business College. She worked at Anderson Clayton before raising her family of four. Helen has been a sales representative for SPJST insurance for almost 30 years and also has her real estate license and is currently selling real estate for Mildred Holeman Real Estate Company.

Helen's love of music started at an early age. She sang in her church choir, with The Ray Krenek Band, The Nick Navarro Orchestra, and was a member of The Houston Community Choir.

While in that group, Helen played in several operettas. She met husband, King, while on -a singing engagement in Crosby, Texas. King and Helen are parents to two daughters and two sons.

Vikki is married to David Huble and they have made Helen a proud grandmother with their daughter.

Kelsie. Vivian and her husband, Eddie Baker, live in Houston where Vivian works part - time and attends University of Houston in her senior year. Son Vincent attends University of Texas in his second year, and Vernon is a freshman at Texas A&M University.

Houston Lodge No 88 News Featured officer this week is our youth leader. Marie Stayton was born in Port Arthur but moved to Houston at age 3 with her mother, brothers and sister. Brothers John and Joseph Carver and sister Mary Hammer all reside in Houston.

Marie attended Annunciation and Incarnate Word Catholic schools. She was a Scout leader while her boys were growin g up and is currently training to teach CCE at her church, Christ The King.

Marie first met her future husband A.J. at a park dance at age 15, but they didn't marry until some years later in 1944. They will soon celebrate their 43rd wedding anniversary. A.J. and Marie have 3 sons and 3 grandsons.

Melvin and wife Amelia live in Leakey, Texas where he is president of the Chamber of Commerce and owns a construction company. They have one son, Blake. Arthur Joseph III and wile, Sharon have two boys, Joseph (known as Skippy Joe) and Casey.

Arthur works for the Highway Department. Son Johnny and wife Patricia also live in Houston and he works as a food broker.

Marie has been a member of our Entertainment Committee and is currently an English play director for the Dramatic Club. She has been our lodge youth leader for 2 years.

Marie and husband A.J. have been very active at Lodge 88 since they joined our organization. A.J. is a member of the Bingo committee, has served on the Board of Trustees for several years and is now serving as chairman of that group.

We thank Marie for her years of service to our lodge and know that both she and husband A.J. will continue to be active in the years to come.

Leslie Guyton passed away Friday, December 5th and was buried at Forest Park Westheimer on Monday. Brother Guyton had heart surgery and was in ICU for over 3 weeks with complications. He is survived by wife, stepchildren, 6 2 Mabel, grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren and 2 sisters. May his surviving family accept our sympathy in this time of sorrow.

On Saturday, December 20th, The Knights of Dixie play in our Chandelier Ballroom and on Saturday, December 27th The Central Texas Sounds appear. They are also known as The Ellinger Combo.

New Year's Eve tickets are going fast. You have until the 22nd to pick up your tickets. None will be held after that. Sunday, December 21st is the Blue Room party. I hope you have your tickets for that. This is always one of the highlights of the year.

Tom Jecmenek is in the ICU unit at St. Joseph Hospital. He's been there a week with pneumonia and other complications. Tom, with his strength and attitude will pull through -- it's just taking awhile.

Miroslav Bily is in traction at Heights Hospital correcting a problem atter hip surgery. He is to be there for 3 weeks so he may still be there when you read this letter. Go by and visit with him because I know he'll enjoy the company.

The Birthday Club hosted a Christmas dinner for their members and invited the officers of the lodge and the Board of Trustees for a delicious turkey dinner on Wednesday, December 3rd. It was so nice to see Sister Lillian Finn and husband Harry that day. Harry is recuperating from eye ,turgery and Lillian has just completed a series 01 a new type of chemotherapy. They were both glad to he able to attend the dinner and we certainly were happy to see them.

Classes At Lodge 88 Close For 1986 Czech

For the past 21/2 months Czech classe:s, taught by W.E. "Bill" Soucek, were held each Monday evening, with the exception of stated meeting nights, at Lodge No. 88, Houston. We had a total of 34 students enrolled in the fall class, many of whom had participated in previous classes. It was good to have so many young people attending these lessons and showing such deep interest in the Czech language.

Professor Soucek, as we call him, did an excellent job of teaching the basics of the Czech language. He kept the students entertained with his stories, which always seemed to tell something about the usage of Czech.

There was never a dull moment in Bill's class.

By unanimous vote of the class, it was decided to ask the officers of Lodge 88 to schedule another 10 - week semester of Czech classes in the spring of next year. Lodge President Jerry Ermis reported that the lodge officers had already made preliminary plans to hold Czech classes again in 1987.

Our final lesson for 1986 ended in grand fashion on December 1st. Mr. Soucek, no doubt, was prepared to teach for the usual 2 hours, but when recess came at 8:30 p.m., the ladies changed his mind. All of the ladies prepared and brought "goodies" for us to enjoy. You all know that when Czech women start out to prepare a "small" snack, it always turns out to be a feast fit for a king. This occasion was no different; no one went away hungry.

Beside being the last day of school, so to speak, it was also Mr. Soucek's birthday. (I'm not supposed to tell you how old Bill is, but no one told me not to tell you how young he is -- Bill is 81 years young.)

The class expressed their appreciation to Bill for his efforts and congratulated him on his birthday by giving him a Czech songbook, congratulatory cards and a gratuity.

Lodge President Jerry Ermis also presented him with a gratuity from the lodge.

On behalf of all of the students, THANK YOU, Brother Soucek for a job well done! We hope you will find time to teach our Czech class again next spring.

Dear Members and Friends: In thinking of December and the holidays this past summer they seemed so remote and now before you realize it, here they are; we will not have a regularly - scheduled meeting this month there is no news to report concerning lodge business.

However, some of you may care to hear about the wonderful party on December 7th. Many of you members of the four area lodges have firsthand knowledge; there was such a good attendance that, at one point in the afternoon, every seat was taken plus the workers, walkers, bar customers and the customary group of children playing on the dance floor.

We were fortunate to have SL President Howard Leshikar and family present and to have him deliver an appropriate invocation. Then Mary Ann Krivanek, dinner chairperson, and her crew had plenty of good food ready and there was ample time to relax after eating to be able to enjoy the dancing later. It is a certainty that I'm safe in saying that every Lodge No. 92 member present that day wants to tell our guests that we were so grateful to you all for making the afternoon such a success. Come again and come often, a sincere welcome is always in effect.

The installation ceremony was impressive and we wish to thank Brother Sid Pokladnik for officiating and being accompanied by his ever supportive wife, Justine. We also must not forget all the great desserts for the meal. There was an overabundance of pies and cakes, etc. of the finest quality.

Lodge 186 Celebrates Annual Dinner On November 16, 1986, the SPJST Lodge No. 186 at Caldwell hosted their annual turkey and dressing dinner. We had a fantastic turnout and had a good auction. This was a very special day for the members of our lodge.

We have just completed remodeling our lodge hall. It has taken many years of hard work from our members to be able to do this. County Judge Woods Caperton cut our renovation cake

Lodge 88 Birthday Club This is just a small tribute to two of our long devoted sisters of SPJST and the Birthday Club Sisters of Lodge No. 88 in Houston.

Words cannot express the devotion and love that Sisters Mary Tilich and Bessie Vasula expressed for all the members of our lodge and SPJST. As long as I can remember, Sister Mary Tilich has been working for the advancement of the Birthday Club and Lodge 88.

Sister Mary could always be seen in charge of all the fund - raising projects and sales of articles to benefit the youth and aged.

Sister Bessie Vasula, although sometimes very ill, always extended a

assisted by Charlsa Wine and Holly Bartell who served it.

Our other guests speakers were SL Vice President Bernie Gebala from our Home Office, Mayor William Broaddus, and District I Director Ben Trcalek.

Farewell To Podluian THIS and THAT from Lodge 88, Houston Naomi Kostom Spencer Following the events of the 3 - day Sesquicentennial Symposium in College Station last month during which the PODLU2AN ORCHESTRA and the DANCE ENSEMBLE were featured, several SPJST lodges and other organizations came forth with a warm TEXAS WELCOME by inviting this group from Czechoslovakia to perform.

Included in this tour, in recognition of the 150th birthday of the State of Texas, the PODLU2AN group also accepted an invitation from Lodge 88, Houston.

The ensemble gathered at Lodge 88 on Sunday, November 23rd, where they were hosted by the Board of Trustees, headed by Sister Annie Vala of the Kitchen Committee, who, together with her co - workers, prepared and served a complete turkey dinner.

Then after a well - attended performance which started at 2 p.m., in the crowded Chandelier Ballroom, PODLU2AN was awarded a trophy in memory of the occasion. This trophy was presented by Lodge 88.

After a dance for all guests which ended at 6 p.m., it was time to disperse for the day. Then just how it all started, no one knows, but out of the generosity and consideration of some of those present, hospitality and lodgings were offered to the group in some of the homes. Although the group was scattered for the evening, they rested for the night before proceeding on to other parts of Texas tor engagements only to return to Houston on the invitations of Brother and Sister Tim Kostom and Brother and Sister Louis Hanus to be guests at a farewell party which was being planned for them.

As a gesture of kindness and consideration for the weary travelers who were performing almost every day since arriving in TEXAS, it is worthy to mention those who willingly obligated themselves, their time, and to say the least - all that it takes to host 16 visitors for 4 or 5 days, and the hosts were as follows: Marvin and Judy Marek of Missouri City; Tim and Rosalee Kostom, Houston; Mr. and Mrs. Jim Simpson, Houston; Miss Susan Blaha, Houston; Albert Blaha, Houston; Louis and Oleta Hanus, Houston and Robert Ermis, Houston.

Another thing came to my attention.

Expecting the visitors from Czechoslovakia, it was the above mentioned hosts that made arrangements to meet the group at the airport and to see that they were well on the way to Bryan, Texas, where their first performance took place.

Likewise, it was this caravan of 6 or 7 cars and a truck to get the musicians' music instruments and luggage back to the airport on the day of departure.

A quality of generosity and sacrifice of time and energy prevailed throughout the accommodations which were urgent. This attitude calls for kind recognition and, by all means, a measure of gratitude.

A trip to Galveston was planned to start off with. These young people found it. extremely inviting when they shed their shoes and sox to wade in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Was it Cold? Well, yes, but not THAT cold!

They found this a rare and exciting opportunity and a treat.

Followed by a ravenous appetite which is usually the result of whiling

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, December 17, 1986 away some time on the beach, their hosts coaxed them to a seafood dinner.

At first, they were reluctant to take them up on this suggestion, but, after the first bite and taste, they were pleasantly surprised and relished every bite. They were not disappointed in the least .

Following this repast, the hosts took them on the Bolivar Ferry across the bay. The weather permitted, and with the support of the Ferry personnel, they enjoyed this trip on the Gulf of Mexico.

It was now time to move on to the San Jacinto Battle Grounds where, again, they were briefed on bits of TEXAS history.

This was followed by a stop in NASA in Clear Lake City. Browsing through the museum area where much of SPACE AGE history is viewed was also exciting and appreciated. The group agreed quite enthusiastically that this opportunity which had been arran ged for them was not available to everybody.

The following day found them in Houston, again, for shopping and sightseeing. Later on in the evening they shared the Christmas Spirit in the lighting of the Christmas tree at the City Hall, also the lighting of the surrounding skyscrapers in the city.

Since this took place on the day before their departure for Czechoslovakia, Brother Tim Kostom and Rosalee together with Brother Louis and Oleta Hanus invited the performers of PODLUZAN with the generous and friendly hosts to a bash FAREWELL party at their home.

Cocktails were served as arrivals made their appearances, then some headed for the table laden with various delicacies while others were hoping for an escort to the SHOPPING MALL to do some last minute shopping in TEXAS (like computers, radios, VCRS and musical instruments). They had an immediate response from Rosalee Kostom who stood ready to accommodate them. This went on and on as other late arrivals showed up. By that time, after 10 p.m., their appetites reached another peak, and on returning to the • house, the party started all over again with cocktails and food. And this went on until the wee small hours of the next morning.

Do you wonder that a good time was had by all, even those who worked so hard?

In parting, there were expressions of warmth and sincere appreciation to Lodge 88 where they were always welcome, their visits to private homes where they were so cordially and graciously received and where they found hospitality overwhelming.

Moravian Folk Orchestra & Dance Ensemble From Czechoslovakia Tours Texas Texans were recently exposed to the authentic folk music of eastern Moravia during the tour of the Czechoslovak folk orchestra and dance ensemble PODLUZAN • The group was invited by Dr. Clint Machann of Texas A&M University to participate in a symposium devoted to Czech music in Texas, which was held in Bryan, Texas November 14 - 16, 1986. As a salute to Texans of Czech -

Moravian ancestry, the Czechoslovak government sent PODLUZAN to represent Moravian music and dance in Texas' sesquicentennial celebration of statehood. Successful performances in Houston, Dallas, Austin, Victoria, Taylor, West and other towns followed the Bryan performance.

PODLU2AN is a group of some sixty amateur musicians and dancers from the town of Bteclav in the Czechoslovak region of Moravian Slovacko. The ensemble has been in existence thirty years and has toured Europe and Asia. PODLUZAN recently returned from a successful tour of Italy.

PODLU2AN performs the authentic music and dances of the regions of Moravia and Slovakia.

Their music features stringed instruments and woodwinds. The lead instrument is the "cymbal," or hammered dulcimer, which along with the string bass, forms the foundation of the group's music. The musicians are accompanied by folk dancers who perform dances in authentic folk costumes. PODLUZAN surprised some of their audiences in Texas, who expected the happy - go - lucky polkas and waltzes which are frequently stereotyped as Czech music. Much of the music performed by PODLUZAN is characterized by richer rhythms and more complex shadings of tern perment than the traditional polka and waltz music often associated with the Czechs.

Although Texas has a large population of Czech - Moravian descent, the only vestige of Moravian folk music surviving in Texas is the hammered dulcimer. This instrument was often found in early brass dominated polka bands in Texas.

Some string ensembles did exist among the first Czech - Moravian settlers in Texas, but these were overshadowed in popularity by polka orchestras dominated by brass instruments. The PODLUZAN concerts provided Czech - Moravians in Texas with an opportunity to hear the authentic music of their immigrant ancestors' native land. Judging by the enthusiastic response, PODLUZAN succeeded in creating a great deal of interest in Moravian music among Texans of various ethnic backgrounds.

Audiences were impressed by the musicians' love for their music and their willingness to play wherever and whenever asked.

The musicians and dancers spoke about a significant increase in interest in recent years in folklore in their native Czechoslovakia. PODLUZAN has regularly performed at Europe's largest folklore festival in Str gnice in Moravia, Czechoslovakia. The people of Czechoslovakia have traditionally shown a great love and respect for their folk culture, which is among the world's richest. In PODLUZAN'S native region of Moravian Slovacko the population has faithfully and enthusiastically preserved the centuries - old folk traditions. They believe that they have preserved a great wealth of wisdom in the folk culture. For these people the common folk possess the greatest wisdom and virtue, which is richly reflected in the folk culture.

Members of PODLUZAN expressed an interest in the folk music of other nations, especially in American folk and country music. Their performance at Sokol Hall in Dallas was highlighted by a jam session with local bluegrass musicians featuring folk and country numbers.

Although numerous brass bands from Czechoslovakia have toured Texas in the past, this was the first visit

Texas Czech Souvenirs The American - Czech Culture Society is offering a selection of souvenirs commemorating the participation of Texans of Czech ancestry in the 1986 Texas Sesquicentennial. The American Czech Culture Society, a non - profit organization composed of cultural and fraternal societies, has sponsored Czech Days at the State Fair of Texas since 1928. Numerous activities, including a symposium and a Czechoslovak program in the Cotton Bowl stadium, were sponsored this year by the American - Czech Culture Society as a part of the Texas Sesquicentennial. The exhibit "The Czech Texan: A Living Heritage" was

organized by the American - Czech Culture Society as part of the 30 - day State Fair of Texas.

As a means of financing the exhibit and other activities, a souvenir book THE CZECH TEXAN and other items are being offered for sale. The souvenir book contains the complete program for the Czech Sesquicentennial Celebration, information about past Czech Days at the State Fair and additional information about the Czechs of Texas. It is expected that Texas Sesquicentennial souvenirs will become sought - after collectors' items. Pavel Ktilkovskf (1820-1885) (Continuation from last Vestnik) Reduta, where often played K IlikovskST 's quartet, is located in the historical Kernel of Brno, the capitol city of Moravia. This kernel is bordered on one side by rocky Petrov with its cathedral above the greenery of the neighborhood park. The border of the Old Brno on the other side is the park belt Koli gte with interesting monuments and with new Janieek's Theatre. The overall borders of the Old Brno were formerly town's ramparts which could be even now somehow established by the different monasteries which were originally built at these now non-existent city walls.

Reduta originated from 4 burgher houses. In the XVII century it was a tavern with a tap-room for imported wines, and the hall, in which German

and Italian companies gave theatre performances. After fires which broke out several times here in XVIII and XIX centuries the building was reconstructed many times; its present state is the result of reconstructions after WWII. While remembering the great Silesian Pavel KffikovskST let us at this occasion include the extract from the publication Mesto v notach (City in the Musical Notes) from Karel Tachovskjr, dealing among other things also with Kfflkovskrs pupil and successor Leos Jangek. TachovskST wrote the following: Brno's luck was to have the temperamental conductors. First it was Bohumir Rieger, who once during his 50 years stay as conductor grabbed in indignation his conductor stand and was ready to throw it at the bassists, who got out of tune in scherzo of the Beethoven's Symphony. Rieger conducted with great captivation and Gusto even at his ripe age of 81 years.

And here under this passionate man

studied Pavel KrakovskSt, whose musical activity made a great epoch in the history of musical Brno. This outstanding musician conducted, played viola and composed unforgetable choir music anchored in the folks poetry. It was he who actually founded the magnificent tradition of choir singing, and it was he who became one of the most important composers of the pre-Smetana's era.

This humble but very industrious musician comprehended his creativity as a modest means of giving an undemanding service to his homeland. Whatever was left from his written activities (his compositions only as copies) was preserved only by chance, as KfinovskST burned, shortly before his death, all his manuscripts thinking they do not have any importance. As Pavel Kfiikovsk* was an intimate friend of 5 years older JanRek's father, he therefore arranged for 11-year-old Leo§ to become a fundatist at his Old Brno's monastery in September 1865.

Leo JandUk (baptised Leo Eugene)-future musical composer-was born on 3rd July 1854 in Hukvaldy, under the ruin of the biggest Moravian castle of the same name from the second half of the XIV century. His father Jiff (George) JanaCek (1815-1866), teacher, principal of the school and a choir director was originally from AlbrechtiCky in Silesia and Leo's mother Amalie, maiden name Grulichova (1819-1884) was from Pribor in Moravia. (In Pffbor, known in German language as Freiberg, as born in 1856 Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis).

The arrival of the 11-year-old Leos to Brno was sad, because he felt all along among strangers, after his mother departed for home. He soon though found new friends among the young singers. Modra:Cci (Blue boys) -- the fundatists dressed in blue, white hemmed robes were singing like in heaven in the church choir but they often were just like any other boys instead of the little angels. Jande'ek always remembered an episode in the monastery's garden where he and the other boys were caught by their choir director KffikovskS7 while they climbed trees picking the fruit. They had to, one by one, like it or not, pass him at the gate and it was like a musical scale.

Because of a few apples hidden in the pockets a musical scale from the low pitch to the highest pitch. "The slap on my face sounded like the highest pitch" recalled Jan gek without any malice towards KffilovskSt. In the remembrance. of his fundatist years JanaZek composed a charming sextet Mladf (Youth) and melanchonic cantata Amarus, a song of monastery's solitude and of unattainable love.

Well, KflikovskS, used to say way back on the choir of the monastery in the Old Brno that "Jan gek will one of these days grow over our heads". And heaven behold, Jan gZek, just 22 years old, was substituting KifikovskSr at the choir, was teaching music at Brno's schools, conducted since 1873 a singing group Svatopluk, composed of the artisans of the city, from 1876 he conducted Brno's Beseda, was giving concerts of the new school for organists, which was the foundation of the future Brno's conservatory. Jan gek musical activity and his long road to success started in the gangways of the Augustinian monastery, it continued on his daily walk to the teacher's institute, where he wrote long into the night his first operas. His walks through Brno's parks, through its streets and through city open markets gave him new ideas for future compositions. These sounds or notes he heard during his walks he wrote right away into his pocket

notebook because they represented daily life as it really was. Life -- according to Jangek -- is an endless stream of polygonal music. This deep belief in life shines out of practically all Jangek's compositions. Jangek's great work is also motivated by the beauty of the Moravian and Silesian folksongs. The example of Pavel KffnovskSt played an important role in Jangek's creativity in this field. Here ofr example belongs the collection Morayske pfsn6 milostne (Lovely Songs of Moravia) and passionate dramatic piece Na Solani Cartak from his native Beskydy mountain range.

Kfilkovskrs influence was also a definite factor to Jan gek's creation of his world-wide famous Glagolitic Mass in Old Church Slavonic. Leo§ Jangek thought highly of his patron and teacher Pavel Kffikovsk9 and gratefully remembered his stay as a singer, conductor and composer of the choir in St. Thomas church at the Augustinian monastery in Old Brno.

At his point let me bring forth another outstanding personality from KffikovskSt's surroundings at the monastery in Old Brno. When Kffikovsk5r became a novice of the Augustinian order in 1845, Rehof (Gregory) Mendel form Hyneice in Silesia, who later became a worldwide known scientist in the field of heredity, was already for 2 years a monk here.

The scientist Mendel, who was doing all his experiments and studies in Brno's monastery at St. Thomas, was elected as a prior of the cloister in 1868, the same year when Leos Jandeek, at the age of 11 years, arrived here as the choir fundatist. Pavel KffikovskSr was at that time active in the religious music only because of the prohibition of his secular creativity by the German hierarchy.

The choir maestro composer Pavel KflikovskSr and the greatest Moravian composer Leos Jande'ek on one side, Rehof (Gregory) Mendel, the scientific genius on other side, made the Augustinian monastery in the Old Brno the very important center of Czech music and Czech science.

As far as Pavel KffikovskST is concerned, one cannot help but wonder how far he would have had progressed, if he had not been forbidden to compose the secular music.

Lodge 177 Youth Club Activities Dear Readers: At our October 8th meeting we had 15 members and 2 guests present.

During the month of October we participated in Super Bowling Saturday. Our members really enjoyed it and won many prizes.

During our November 12th meeting we had 8 members present. We brought canned goods for a needy Family. The next day a family in Academy lost almost everything to a tire. There are four girls in this family who go to school with our members.

We sent the canned goods to them. We plan to attend our lodge Christmas party in December.

Our mother lodge now allows us to sell cakes and sandwiches each week at Bingo. It sure has helped our bank account and we really appreciate them letting us do this. Our December meeting will be a Christmas party. We hope everyone has a Merry Christmas.

Remember Jesus is the reason for the season!

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 186, Caldwell, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother FRANCES ANN WOTIPKA, 97, of Caldwell, who passed away Sunday evening, March 2, 1986, in the Leisure Lodge Nursing Center where she had been a resident since April 15, 1982.

She was born 8 January 1889 in Lee County, Texas near Dime Box to the late John and Marie Micnevek Hejtmancik.

Mrs. Wotipka moved to Burleson County at the age of 16 to the Deanville community. She was a homemaker and was very agile and alert at her age of 97. She was a member of the Caldwell Brethren Church and a member of the SPJST since 1916 and was honored last year

by Lodge 186 for her membership of 69 years.

Sister Wotipka was married to Joe Lesikar 12 April 1908; he preceded her in death in 1939. She married Frank J. Wotipka on December 20, 1951. He died January 24, 1957.

Preceding her in death were also two sons, Joe D. Lesikar and Edward Lesikar; brothers, Joe Hejtmancik and Antone Hejtmancik; sisters, Lydia Ripple and Milady Hejtmancik.

Survivors include one son, George Lesikar and daughter - in - law, Belauk Lesikar of Homeland, California; one daughter, Mrs. Frank Lydia Kristoff of Caldwell; 14 grandchildren; 31 great

- grandchildren; two daughters - in law, Mrs. Ella Lesikar of Deanville and Mrs. Ruth Lesikar of Belton; four sisters, Albina Blaha and Mary Wolz of Caldwell, Annie Maluschka of Dime Box, Josephine Hejtmancik of Austin; and one sister - in - law, Mrs. Ella Hejtmancik of Caldwell.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Wednesday, March 5th, in Phillips Luckey Chapel with the Rev. Henry E. Beseda, pastor of the Snook Brethren Church, officiating. Burial was in the San Antonio Prairie Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Lloyd Lesikar, Albert Blaha, Milton Englemann, Kurt Koehler, Lloyd Hejtmancik, Lanceer Wolz, Frank Lynn Kristoff, Linn Hejtmancik, Eldie Koehler, Dennis Englemarin and Tommy Fabion.

FICK, JR. who passed away at 7:15 p.m. on Sunday, November 16, 1986 at the Veterans Hospital in Houston at the age of 63 years.

Brother Fick was born in Bleiblerville on October 31, 1923 to Emil and Martha Fick Sr. He was raised in Bleiblerville and attended Victoria School, also in Bleiblervitie.

Brother Fick served with the U.S. Army in World War II. He married Miss Katie Rasch on August 20, 1946 in Caldwell, Texas.

He was a carpenter, also a member of the Industry Brethren Church and the SPJST Lodge No. 33 of Bleiblerville.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Katie Fick of Bleiblerville; daughter, Mrs. Nancy Moerbe of Houston; son, Allen L. Fick of Houston; sister, Mrs. Lillie Mae Kainer of. Houston; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mrs. Rosalie Cou f al .

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

November 19th from the Industry Brethren Church with Rev. Milton Maly officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Kenney Kainer, Chris Kainer, Alois Cmajdalka, Leo Hollis, Casper Balke and Herbert Schovajsa.

Services were under the direction of the Pete E. Etlinger Funeral Home of Bellville.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 15 in Buckholts, Texas, wish to express heartfelt sympathy on behalf of our entire membership to the family of CAROLINE BUNDLE SVETLIK, who passed away November 4, 1986 at the age of 86 years in a Cameron hospital following a long illness.

Sister Svetlik was a native of Flatonia, Texas; her parents were Frank and Annie Jilak Hundle. Most of her life was spent in Milam County as a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ladie Svetlik.

Surviving are three sons, Steve Svetlik of Buckholts, Albert Svetlik of England and Theodore Svetlik of Dallas; three grandchildren and three great - grandchildren.

Funeral services were held for Sister Svetlik at 2 p.m. on Thursday in the Chapel of Green Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Laferty officiating. Burial was in the Corinth Cemetery near Buckholts.

She was a member of Lodge No. 15 since 1920.

Of Sympathy Darryl Wayne Graham, beloved son, brother, grandson, cousin and special friend to all who met him passed away September 8, 1986 when he was killed in an automobile accident at age 18.

Darryl Wayne was born on November 14, 1967 in Houston, Texas to Rose Marie and Claude Graham.

He was a senior at Waltrip High School and a part - time employee of Flemming Foods Company. He attended St. Anne De Beau Pre Church where he served as an altar boy in his younger years. He was a member of Lodge 88 and a visitor to the youth club at SPJST Lodge 142. He loved his Sunday night dancing with his sister, Debbie, and all his friends at Bill Mraz. He loved rebuilding motors and had just completed a 454.

Survivors include his mother, Rose Marie Graham; his sister, Debbie Graham; his father and step - mother, Claude and Donna Graham; his stepbrother and sisters, Jarred and Janet Raseberry, Carrie and Carla Graham; grandparents, Robert and Martha Skobla, James and Doris Franks; his Godchild, Keith Thomas Skobla; aunts, uncles and cousins who all loved him very much.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Wednesday, September 10th at Pat H. Foley Northwest Chapel. George Strait music was played at the funeral home because he would have wanted his friends to remember the happy time they had together and would not have wanted them to be sad. He was laid to rest and to be with the Lord at a funeral mass at noon Thursday, September 11th at Christ the King Church with Father John Hardman, SSJ and Father Horn officiating.

Pallbearers included Kenneth Kominczak, Curtis Kieschnick, Chris Cooper, Mark Stepanski, Ronnie Zientek, Don Buxkemper, Scott Meineke, Lance Franks, James Skobla and Jeff Kalina.

Honorary pallbearers were Keith Skobla, Chad Skobla and Jarred Raseberry.

Brother Junek was born in Merle, Texas in Burleson County. He was married to Emilie Hejl and farmed in the Seaton Community. They later moved to the Rosenberg area where they farmed until his retirement.

Before moving to Roenberg, he was a very active member at Star Hall, serving as officer in the 50s.

Survivors include a son, Clifton Junek of College Station; four brothers, Adolph Junek, Will Junek, Earnest Junek and Emil Junek, all of Temple; two sisters, Vlasta Junek and Agnes Janes, both of Houston; two grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

His wife passed away in 1983 and a son in 1954.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Sunday, November 30th in the Keever Chapel with Rev. Charles McClure of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment was in Myrtle Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Johnny Laznovsky, Larry Laznovsky, Gregson Laznovsky, David Smith, Ted Smith and Stuart Hamilton.

Brother Laznovsky was born June 22, 1933 in Ennis to Frank and Mary Trojacek Laznovsky. He was reared in Ennis and attended Mott schools. He also attended Ennis High School.

After school he entered the U.S. Air Force in 1954. During his 21 years in the service, he served two tours in the European Theatre in England and Germany. He also served two tours in Thailand. After returning from overseas, he retired as a staff sergeant in the Intelligence Operations in the 68th Bombardment Wing (SAC).

After retiring from the service, he was employed by Fallen's Automotive in Ennis.

He was a member of the VFW Post No. 7106, the Sokol, and SPJST Lodge 135.

Survivors include four brothers, Jerry Laznovsky and Edwin Laznovsky, both of Ennis, Stanley Laznovsky of Dallas and Milton Laznovsky of Paris, France; two sisters, Libby Smith of Dallas and Vlasta Laznovsky of Ennis and a

Ray Weber officiating. Burial was in Hope Lutheran Memorial Park at Buckholts.

Mr. Jeske was born in Falls County, the son of Paul William and Elsie Kurtz Jeske. He lived in the Rogers area most of his life. He worked for Baugh Manufacturing Company of Temple.

He married Evelyn Motl on July 30, 1950. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Temple.

Survivors include his widow, Evelyn Jeske; two sons, Ral Wayne Jeske and Larry Jeske, both of Rogers and two grandchildren.

The couple will live in Temple.

The bride attended TJC and is a geography major at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos.

The bridegroom also attends Southwest Texas State with a major in education.

The bridegroom's parents were hosts for the rehearsal dinner at Pelican's Wharf in Temple.

Anniversary Celebrants The couple celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on November 19, 1986.

Brother Mikeska, age 90, and Mrs. Mikeska, 89, were married on November 19, 1919 and both are SPJST members of longstanding at

Lodge No. 68, Nelsonville. They made their living farming in that community.

A dinner was enjoyed by all their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends.

Mikulas-Heatherley Wedding On November 28, 1986, Miss Donna Jane Mikulas and Shayne Heatherley were united in marriage in Temple Brethren Church. The Rev. Mark Labaj and the Rev. Ralph Person officiated at the 7:30 p.m. ceremony.

Music was provided by Kim Dillard of Temple, organist, and Laurie Bagby of Lorena and David Williamson of Temple, soloists.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Mikulas, Jr. Mr. Mikulas is the financial secretary of the Supreme

Lodge SPJST. Donna is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar H. Lorenz and Lillie Mikulas, all of Temple.

The groom is the son of Mr. Francis (Doc) Heatherley of Waco and Joyce 0. Heatherley of Hewitt.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a satin gown featuring a seville lace bodice accented with pearls, long. lace sleeves accented with pearls, and a train trimmed in floss lace.

Golden Wedding Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Walter Haisler of Temple were honored on thei r 50th anniversary by their children and spouses, Walter and Delores Haisler, C.W. and Betty Browning, Danny and Karen Haisler.

The celebrants were honored on December 6, 1986 with a reception, supper and dance at Seaton Star Hall at Seaton, Texas.

Walter Haisler and Ella Helen Haisler were married on December 26,

1936 in Temple.

They have three children, Walter Haisler, Jr. of College Station, Betty Browning of Mabank, and Danny Haisler of Carlisle, Arkansas plus six grandchildren, David, Paul and Susan Haisler, Deborah Motl, Amanda Hobbs, and Nathan Haisler.

Mr. and Mrs. Haisler and their family are members of Star Hall Lodge No. 47 at Seaton, Texas.

Mrs. Haisler was honored with receiving her SPJST 50 - year membership pin in 1985. Mr. Haisler is an SPJST member for 49 years.

Items Of Interes Qualifications For SPJST Scholarship The Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas established a Scholarship Fund in 1982 to encourage young members to further their education and to help them to achieve career goals. Funded by the SPJST and voluntary contributions by SPJST members, the Scholarship Program is administered by the SPJST Supreme Lodge as an investment in youth and in our economic and social progress.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE? Applicants must be qualified members of the SPJST. Qualified members are those having an active SPJST insurance certificate in force.

The certificate must be in force one year at the time of application to be considered.

Application may be made during the high school senior year. Scholarships will be awarded only to recipients who have graduated from high school, or its equivalent.

College undergraduates may apply for a scholarship for the next school year.

SELECTION Scholarships are awarded by a committee selected by the Supreme Lodge of the SPJST. The committee consists of persons who have a recognized standing in the field of education and who are not associated in any other way with the SPJST or the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

Applicants who are high school seniors may take either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (S.A.T.) given by the College Entrance Examination Board.

Arrangements to take the S.A.T. or A.C.T. should be made with their local high school.

Criteria for selecting scholarship winners from among high school seniors include: Results of the S.A.T. and/or A.C.T. High school records References and recommendations The committee's judgment of the applicant's potential SPJST involvement Applicants who are college undergraduates must submit official transcripts of past college work with their application.

Exact due dates and requirements for both the freshmen and undergraduate programs will be furnished the member after they have sent in the initial application prior to April 30th.

The committee's decisions will be announced before the beginning of the fall semester.

SELECTION OF ACCREDITED COLLEGE AND DEGREE Scholarship winners may attend any college that has programs leading to a Bachelor's Degree in the United States of America accredited by a recognized accrediting body. Negotiations for admission must be conducted entirely by the scholarship applicant.

AMOUNT OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS The SPJST will award scholarships in the Freshman and Undergraduate Programs in the amount of $500. You can only be a recipient of one SPJST Scholarship. However, if you are

unsuccessful in your initial application you may reapply the following school years or until you are a recipient.

RESPONSIBILITY OF SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS Winners of an SPJST scholarship must enter an accredited college not later than the fall term following the announcement of the scholarship award.

They must attend college on a full time basis and carry a normal academic load without interruption and in accordance with the college calendar. They must maintain academic and personal standards satisfactory to the college and to the committee.

MILITARY SERVICE AND ILLNESS If a scholarship recipient enters military service, the scholarship will be held in reserve for a period of up to six (6) months after the date of his/her release from service. Illness and injury that causes a delay in acceptance or continuance of a scholarship will also be considered good cause for holding an award in reserve.

ADMINISTRATION The SPJST Supreme Lodge has full authority to establish the rules and regulations governing the Scholarship Program or to amend them at any time as it deems necessary. Administration and financing of the programs are the exclusive responsibility of the SPJST. The committee has exclusive jurisdiction in selecting scholarship winners. It acts in an advisory capacity to the SPJST Supreme Lodge. The SPJST assumes no responsibility for the conduct, personal affairs, or debts of scholarship winners of scholarship applicants and will not be liable therefore in any manner.

PAYMENT OF AWARDS Funds covering scholarship awards are remitted direct to the college, after proof of enrollment is received by the Supreme Lodge. The scholarship is to be used for tuition, fees and books.

Christmas In Early American Times Although Americans in Colonial times did not have Christmas trees or Santa as we know him today, they knew how to celebrate the season with merriment.

Christmas festivities in the Colonies began a week before Christmas and lasted until Twelfth Night, January 5th.

In Virginia, a huge bonfire would be lit to usher in the season and candles placed in every window. Cannons would signal the start of the festivities, at which time the candles would be lit.

These candles would be lit each night until the new year.

Throughout the season, the strains of fiddles and caroling would fill the air, as Virginians would attend balls, fox - hunts and enjoy social visits.

Wreaths of sprigs, scented spices and dried flowers were popular Colonial decorations during the holidays. Mantels were adorned with pine or soft cedar branches, pine cones and bayberries. Sprigs of holly were tucked between picture frames and walls, following the English -custom.

Pomegranates were also popular decorations.

Feasting was integral to the holiday season in the Colonies. The wassail bowl symbolized cheer and hospitality to many early Americans, just as it had to their British forebears.

Dutch settlers enjoyed doughnuts, sweet cakes, short cakes, ginger cakes, fruit pies, preserves, fried shad, roasted chicken and bowls of milk and cream during the holidays.

In Virginia, roast turkey was the centerpiece of holiday meals, augmented with kumquats, roast beef, cranberry mold, spiced crab apples and glazed sweet potato slices.

Greetings among the widely scattered settlers would often be accomplished with the firing of muskets, a custom which has evolved into the setting off of firecrackers in some parts of the South today.

Christmas Day was a day of worship in Colonial America. In this land of freedom of religion, worship services ranged from morning services for Protestants to midnight mass for the Catholic settlers.

Although the Puritans objected to the revelry surrounding Christmas in 1659, they enacted a law imposing a fine on anyone "found observing by abstinence from labor, feasting, or in any other way, such days as Christmas Day" -- the settlers in early America found much cause to celebrate, according to the country of their origin.

When the New Style Calendar was adopted by England, the Colonies subsequently followed suit, and took off 11 days from the year. Thus December 25th became January 6th, which was celebrated as "Old Christmas" by many.

The very first Christmas in America was a time of hardship, but even then the Pilgrims managed to bring joy to the occasion. Harriet Beecher Stowe described the first Christmas in the colonies in one of her stories: "The men had come back from their work on shore with branches of green pine and holly, and the women had stuck them about the ship, not without tearful thoughts of old homeplaces where their childhood fathers and mothers did the same. Bits and snatches of Christmas carols were floating all around the ship, like landbirds blown far out to sea."

Even in the midst of their difficulties, the earliest Colonists took time to celebrate Christmas as best they could, a tradition that Americans continue to this day.

Christmas In Other Lands i ne joy of Christmas is boundless --it circles the globe and is celebrated in as many ways as there are nations.

In Panama, for instance, Christmas is a time for visiting. The visits begin on Christmas Eve, when friends come to your home. Together, you go on to yet another friend's home. So the visits continue, until Christmas night, when it's time for a party. Children open their gifts at midnight in this country, where decorated trees, both artificial and green, add to the holiday atmosphere. On Christmas Day, special fruitcakes and yellow cakes are served in honor of the holiday.

Italian children look forward each Christmas to the arrival of Babbo Natale or Father Christmas. Another Italian custom popular with youngsters is the exchanging of panettone, special cakes baked at Christmas time. Attending mass and gathering together with other family members for a big dinner are other Christmas traditions in Italy.

In Brazil, the holiday celebrations begin at midnight on Christmas Eve. Factories sound off their sirens at this time, and the cities are brightly decorated with lights, as stores stay open all night. After church services, families gather together for a feast of turkey or lamb, tropical fruits and Christmas cake. And, they toast each other with champagne. In this country, you will find only artificial trees in the homes, because of the warm climate.

Bavarian children eagerly await a visit from Knecht Ruprecht on December 6th. This Santa - like figure distributes candy to good children, while naughty youngsters get a spanking from "Grumbles," a devilish fi gure carrying sticks or a switch. The Christkindl or Christ Child brings presents on Christmas Day as well.

It's summertime in Peru durin g the Christmas season, so instead of going sledding, youn gsters there go roller skating and bikin g on Christmas Day. The festivities begin with midnight mass on Christmas Eve, after which families go home for hot chocolate with panettone (an Italian cake bread) and open presents. There is food in abundance at this time, notably roast pig or turkey, either cooked on a spit or in the ground. Musical instruments are played while everyone sings folk songs and there is much dancing.

Firecrackers are set off during these holiday parties in Peru.

Denmark celebrates Christmas as the greatest holiday of the year and preparations are elaborate indeed in this Scandinavian country. The season begins with Baking Day, when the dough is mixed for bruneka ge, a paper - thin spice cookie served at Christmas.

The Christmas and New Year Season is one of lifted spirits, when we wish each other good fortune, good health, and prosperity in our exchange of Holiday Greetings.

It is also a good time to turn our minds to the SPJST Scholarship Fund. What we do today in the way of gifts will mean much to deserving young people in the future.
