Saturday and Sunday, November 15 and 16, we attended the "Czech Music In Texas - A Sesquicentennial Symposium" at the Brazos Center in Bryan-College Station and we enjoyed everything we attended, however, there were three things going on at the same time at times, so we could not attend all naturally. At times, my wife, Maxine, attended one program while yours truly attended another.

Saturday, from about six o'clock until late at night, the Poldluzan music and Dance Ensemble from Breclav, Moravia in Czechoslovakia was very entertaining. Many of our members and readers in Texas will have an opportunity to see and hear them at a reasonable price. You will enjoy them.

Their schedule, thus far, is in this issue.

Sunday, the SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston Czech Concert Orchestra and Czech Choral Group and the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra followed by the Seaton Brass Band provided very good listening entertainment (including dancing music; the dance floor was filled with dancers most of the time).

Dr. Clint Machann and all concerned with the undertaking for the Symposium are to be .generously congratulated; we realize how much time and effort they must have put into the arranging of the entire program!

From The President's Office SPJST Sponsors Theme Contest The SPJST Supreme Lodge Board has authorized a theme contest for SPJST members 18 years and older.

The selected theme would be used on all 1987 publications concerning the Society. The winner will be selected by the Supreme Lodge Board at the January meeting and will receive a monetary award of $100.

The theme should be brief, concise and reflective of the Society and its endeavors.

Meeting/Party The Granger SPJST Lodge No. 20 will have their annual meeting and Christmas party on Sunday, December 14th at 2 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Granger.

Santa Claus will make his visit to greet everyone. A barbecue supper will be served. Drinks and meat will be furnished and each family is asked to bring two dishes -- a vegetable, salad and/or dessert.

Christmas Party

For Lodge 24 Dear Readers: Just a reminder that our Christmas dinner will be held on Sunday, December 14th, starting at 3 p.m. with a happy hour and egg nog.

Our youth club will have a Christmas program at 4 p.m. and dinner will be served at 5 p.m. We will have turkey and dressing and everyone is asked to bring a salad and dessert for the meal.

The youth club will be exchanging gifts, so if you have a child in the youth club and need more information, contact their Leaders Rose Harvell or Pauline Marek.

The Bell County Child Welfare organization has asked for donations for Christmas gifts for their children.

The members decided that each family should donate a good - conditioned, used toy or buy a $5 new toy and bring it to our next meeting on December 10th or at the Christmas dinner.

Everyone is asked to please participate in this and help make this a wonderful Christmas for children.

The New Year's Eve dance is just around the corner. We will be having Jerry Haisler and his band playing.

Tickets are $7.50 per person or $15 a couple and we will be taking reservations; to get these contact Louise Zavodny at 985 - 2556 or go by Red Ranger Grocery. There will be hats and horns plus plenty of black eyed peas for everyone. Come on out and have a Happy New Year's Eve night.

News From Victoria Lodge No. 32 The regular monthly meeting was held on November 5th. Following the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our departed members, President Franklin Elles presided over the meeting.

SL President Howard Leshikar sent a letter concerning our charitable projects.

James D. Rogers and Jeri L. Rogers were accepted as new members.

Treasurer Ella Arnold's report was accepted as read.

The District VI meeting will be on April 26, 1987 at the Victoria Community Center Annex.

The Christmas party and regular monthly meeting will be on December 3rd, starting at 6 p.m. December 6th is also election night for selecting 1987 officers. Members are to bring side dishes and/or desserts. Three turkeys will be purchased from the Stroman High School FFA. Tea and coffee will be furnished.

The minutes and treasurer's report were read from our October meeting and appioved as read.

Correspondence from SL President Howard Leshikar was read reminding us of the Christmas season and our charitable projects. A thank you from the family of Joe Mezzles was read.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Christopher Pavelka, Edna Tepe, Albert Banik, Jason Brown and Louise Burney. We would also like to congratulate Edna and Joe Tepe on their 53rd anniversary this month.

Vernon Dulock gave the kitchen report; Helen has been sick. Helen, we hope you are getting better and look forward to seeing you back on your feet again. Also reported sick was Lydia Dulock. It is our understanding that she is better and we wish her the best.

We will be on direct billing the first of the year. There is a possibility this will not be effected in January and your premiums will be paid directly, to Albert Banik.

Dinner will be served at 6 p.m., Santa will arrive at 7:30 p.m. and our dance will be from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m., with a polka band. A fun time should be had by all and we hope that everyone from the lodge will attend this meeting.

Waco Lodge 66 Members' Yuletide Party Dear Members: Lodge 66's Christmas party will be held on Saturday, December 6th.

After the meal there will be a short youth program and a visit from Santa.

Lodge 81 Makes Several Contributions Dear Members: On November 16, 1986, our Lodge 81 at Needville served a scrumptious dinner that was very much enjoyed by all present. A thank you and round of applause was given to Benita Walzel for baking the delicious roast and to Mr. and Mrs. Walzel for donating the sausage.

At 1 p.m., President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order. We then stood and Mary Werner led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and also a moment of silence was held as a tribute for our departed members Tommy Wallis and Tom Kocurek.

President Charlie Matcek introduced Rudy and Fred Chaloupka, the second place winners in the SPJST Domino Tournament which was held in Temple, Texas. Congratulations to you!

All officers answered roll call, minutes and reports were approved as read.

Secretary Mary Werner read a thank you letter from Howard Leshikar for Fred and Rudy Chaloupka taking part in the SPJST Domino Tournament. A thank you note was read from the Lydia Sabrsula family for the Memorial Fund, and from Fire Chief Edgar Kleighe for donation to the Needville Fire Department.

Our lodge voted to send a donation of money to the Fort Bend County Child Abuse program; a donation to the Salvation Army, and to the Fort Bend County Women's Refuge plus a donation to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 11 in Needville toward the Organ Fund; the organ to be placed in the Activity Room for use in church service, which will be held there for the convenience of the rest home residents and for other occasions.

One new member, Audrey Peiper, was admitted to our lodge. Welcome, Audrey!

Direct billing was discussed voted on and passed.

Benita Walzel gave a report on their trip to Hawaii and Gilbert Walzel about 'a trip they made on a ship.

A round of applause was given to Edwin Susan for receiving a wrist watch for 28 years of service with RVOS Insurance.

An outdoor light will be installed in the parking area at our lodge hall, and lights over the doors of the ladies' and men's rest rooms.

A new 55 - cup stainless steel coffee pot and food warmer were added to our kitchen. Another food warmer will be bought.

We will have our Christmas tree and bags of. candy, fruit and nuts for children at our December 14th meeting. Dinner will be served at 12:15 p.m. The lodge will furnish the meat and ladies are to bring vegetable and pastry dishes.

Members, circle your calendar for December 14th and come to'enjoy the meal and meeting with us.

Apples and oranges are to be given to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home for Christmas.

Houston Lodge 88 News "Captain Eddie," our Lin Lesak, was teatured in an article in the Houston Chronicle along with two other "traffic watchers" concerning the perils of their jobs. Flying over the city in a small plane, Captain Eddie gives reports to Radio Station KIKK of the traffic congestion on our crowded freeways. The men stated that it gets pretty crowded up there with the small planes and helicopters.

Royal Warnasch is also one of our celebrities. His picture was in the Sunday Houston Post. His Army Division, the 10th Mountain Division, held a reunion in the Westin Galleria Hotel this past weekend and Royal was interviewed concerning how he and other Texans ended up in a ski troop in Italy in 1945.

Sister Mary Tilieh passed away on Saturday, November 15th. Funeral services were held on Monday, November 17th at Brookside Chapel with interment at that cemetery. Mary will be missed by her many friends at Lodge 88 as well as by her surviving family. May God be with husband Frank and daughter Dorothy and her family in this time of sorrow.

Louis and Elsie Roznovsky, "Rosey" and Mary Roznovsky, along with Mr. and Mrs. John Roznovsky of Austin, and Steve and Estelle Kelly went to test their skills at Las Vegas again. They came back ready to go again as soon as they rest. Royal and Laura Warnasch, Joe and Norman Miksch, and Ed and Ellen Miculka also were in Las Vegas about the same time. Oh, the stories we can all tell about the near hits!!!

There will be NO dance on Saturday, November 29th in the

Wednesday, November 26, 1986—VESTNIK/5 Chandelier Ballroom. On Saturday, December 6th, the Bobby Jones Band will play for us, and on Saturday, December 13th Al Pierson and his Big Band USA will be at Lodge 88. This is a dress code dance, meaning the gentlemen will wear coats and ties and the ladies evening attire. Tickets for this dance are on sale in the lodge office at $10 per ticket or $9 for members.

Here are some dates so remember for the month of December: The annual meeting is Sunday, December 14th; youth Christmas party on Monday, December 15th; Blue Room party on Sunday, December 21st; and on December 31st, the big New Year's Eve dance with Ray Jurecka. More information on all these events later.

Floresville Lodge 107 To Meet Lodge No. 107 met at the lodge hall on November 9, 1986 at 4:30 p.m.

President Bayer called the meeting to order. The pledge was led by Stacy Bielefeld.

It was reported Val Chilek was in the hospital in Floresville. He hoped he would be coming home this week. All the members wish him a speedy recovery.

Minutes were read and approved as read. Report was given by Treasurer Jill Suggs.

Youth Leader Polly Bayer stated attendance was small at the youth club meeting. A hayride is planned for their Christmas party. Caroling in Floresville will be part of the program.

Oscar and Dianne Korus and Roxanne Bayer and Larry Bertrand will chaperone the hayride. Refreshments will be at the hall upon their return.

This party is to take place on December 14th, starting at 4 p.m.

The adult lodge voted to have their election of officers and installation of new officers at the January meeting.

Members please note that election of officers is coming up and the January meeting on January 11, 1987 is the date set for the election.

Bob Bayer and Joe Pavliska brought their trophies they had won at the straight domino tournament.

Congratulations, "Boys" maybe next year it will be a first!

President Bayer gave a partial report on the Peanut Festival project. Due to the rainy weather, the sales were not quite as good as in the past. Everyone who helped deserves a vote of thanks for a job well done.

The door prize was won by Cy Pavliska.

Lodge 139 News

Danbury

President Vincent Hechler called the November 12, 1986 meeting of Danbury Lodge No. 139 to order.

Secretary Tommie Lostak read the minutes of the August meeting.

Meetings were not held in September and October. In September several members were out of town. President Hechler and his wife, Catherine, were visiting friends in Nebraska; Secretary Lostak and his wife, Gladys, were in Florida visiting their son, Harold and his family; and this reporter and her daughter were on a wild animal photographic safari in Kenya. In October the Brazoria County Fair conflicted with our meeting date, so a meeting was not held.

Reports were given by Financial Secretary Helen Filipp and Treasurer -Lonnie Lostak. Brother Lonnie announced the lodge donation of $500 was presented to the Danbury Volunteer Fire Department at the time of their fund - raiser barbecue in October. Brother Tommie read correspondence received since the last meeting.

Plans were made to, once again, give lodge members over 70 years of age a Christmas turkey. Secretary Lostak will purchase the turkeys and deliver them to the eligible recipients in time for Christmas.

Our December meeting will be held at 6 p.m. instead of the regular time, and election of officers for the coming year will be on the agenda. After the meeting the members will go to E.J.'s Restaurant for our Christmas dinner.

The lodge will pay $5 toward the cost of each attending member's meal. We hope for a good turnout and we urge our members to attend.

A social was held after the conclusion of the business meeting.

Dear Members and Friends: Our Christmas party, along with Sokol Fort Worth, has been set for Friday, December 19th, at 7:30 p.m.

It will be, as in the past, with a program and then Santa Claus will arrive to make the kiddos have a fun evening; and B.J. and Lester from the Club House Cartoon on Channel 39 will also be there and I am sure the kiddos will be excited.

A social will follow, so we ask the good sisters for their goodies.

The Metroplex Lodges' Christmas party on December 7th, hosted by Lodge 92, will serve dinner at 12 noon to -2 p.m. Dancing will be about 3 p.m. with the Country Boys of Ennis. No charge for members, $5 per person for guests. Let's turn out and have a fun day. It has always been a wonderful party.

Benny's sister, Justine and husband, George Valek of Dallas, picked us up Saturday for nice 3 days; visited their brother, Jerome Pavlicek in the Seven Oaks Nursing Home in Olney, Texas.

We were glad to find him doing so well at the age of 83. We then went on to Megargel to their sister, Lydia Sykora, to spend a couple of nights. Sunday morning we went to Mass at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Seymour; then had a delicious turkey dinner at their parish hall, followed by an auction of the "St. John Statue" of the Bomarton Catholic Church.

Luckily, George Valek got the statue

and understand after getting it touched up, it will be on display at the Catholic Czech Club. We really enjoyed seeing so many friends we haven't seen in years. It was a beautiful weekend.

Can you believe this summer weather after that cold spell? No wonder there are so many colds.

Let's have a good turnout on Sunday, December 7th.

The meeting is Sunday, December 14th, also election of officers. Be there, Friday, December 19th at 7:30 p.m. and New Year's Eve with Danny Steagall -- advance reservations.

Lodge Rozkvet No. 172 December Activities Dear Members: The last month of the year seems to be the busiest of the entire year for Pasadena Lodge No. 172. We have something planned each week to keep us on our toes.

The Czech Club with the Czech Heritage Club will have a Christmas party on Sunday, December 7, 1986 from 12:30 until 5 p.m. More on this affair in later Vestnik issues. Also, our lodge Christmas dinner and dance will be held on Saturday, December 20th, and each member and guest is requested to bring a vegetable dish or pastry. The meats and drinks will be furnished by the lodge. The Donnie Wavra Hi - Liters will begin playing their good type of music starting at 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. The cost of the dance will be $4.

The election of officers, another important event for the lodge, will take place on December 17th, and please note the change from December 24th.

This is also our annual meeting and it is very important that we elect members to various offices and committees and I urge everyone to accept if they are asked by the Nominating Committee.

The New Year's Eve dance tickets are going fast, so if you plan to attend, obtain your tickets immediately; it looks like a sellout! Remember we will be serving black - eyed peas, sausage and cornbread at midnight. The Texas Brew is our band this year and they have proved to be the country western band that draws large crowds.

The Texas Brew will also appear on our stage on December 6th.

There are several members of our lodge who have been in the hospital or plan to enter soon. Sister Tinnie Walla, our treasurer, is recovering nicely after her surgery. Brothers J.V. Thomas and Dan Berry, our vice presidents, will enter the hospital next week for surgery. Also, Brother John Hausler is planning to have eye surgery. Here is wishing all to be back soon and recovering their health.

Dear Members: I would like to take this time to tell all of you members, just one more time, to attend the Christmas party on Sunday, December 7th beginning at noon for the four Lodges 92, 154, 180 and 183. It is being held at Lodge 92 in Fort Worth this year, so mark your

calendar and come out to have a grand time, eat a good meal, meet some old friends and make some new friends.

On Monday, November 11th, twenty - six members met for the regular monthly meeting and election of officers.

We were honored to have our District III Director Sid Pokladnik with us and also welcomed two new members to our lodge, namely, George and James Wiest. Welcome and hope your stay at Lodge 183 will be a long and happy one.

Congratulations are in order for Mary Ann Roznovsky for winning the $26 door prize. It just goes to show you members who have not attended a meeting what you are missing by not attending a meeting.

New officers elected for the year 1987 are: President -- Inez Greenlees, 1st Vice President -- Tony Sanchez, 2nd Vice President -- Charles Bragg, Secretary -- Jeanne Roznos, Financial Secretary -- Daniel Roznovsky, Public Relations and Treasurer -- Norman Kneschk.

The youth leader's office was tabled until next meeting in order for the Nominating Committee to talk to a few more members and try to get some one to take the office for 1987.

Just before the last meeting there was a good old - fashioned G.1. party at the lodge with Charles Bragg, Rozetta Tary, Inez Greenlees, Daniel and Mary Ann Roznovsky, and Norman Kneschk. The hall was scrubbed and polished with members like these is why the place always looks clean and well kept.

Friendship Club Of Ft. Worth Report Dear Members and Friends: This is a reminder of our December 3rd meeting. After the meeting, there will be a Christmas dinner consisting of ham and all the trimmings. The members are to bring the same covered dish as for Thanksgiving except sweet potatoes instead of mashed . potatoes.

A gift of not less than $3 will be exchanged at the party.

Our Thanksgiving Family night dinner was. well - attended, and we welcomed many guests. It was especially nice to see Nancy and Joe Paprskar from Dallas at our dinner.

We wish to thank all the hostesses who helped in the kitchen and especially Janie Nolan and Alice Morley for their assistance in the serving line.

The homemade quilt was won by Zaga Simic of Arlington and the wooden reindeer by Annie Belota of Ft. Worth.

Birthday wishes were expressed through song to Merle Kovar, Elma Anderson, Genevieve Earle and Joe Milan.

Those of us who are members of SPJST Lodges No. 180, 183, 154 and 92 are looking forward to a pleasurable early Christmas party being hosted by Lodge No. 92 on December 7, 1986.

I have been reminded several times of a President's Ball at the Czech Club in Dallas on December 20th. This is one time the ladies can dress up in their formal dresses if they wish. Raymond Zapletal and The Ennis Brass Band will play for dancing. it sounds like fun.

Having just returned from a three day stay in Bryan, Texas, I must add that Lillie and Mac McMillen, Roy and I thoroughly enjoyed the Czech Music in Texas, "A Sesquicentennial Symposium." The list is too long to mention all the excellent performances. Not only was there entertainment, but also cultural information of the role music played in the lives of our forebearers and, last but not least, warm hug or even a soft kiss on the cheek. This is the nature of our Czech people who possess these traits of human benevolence and it prevails at such functions as this.

The Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas in cooperation with the Brazos County Sesquicentennial Commission should be proud of a great symposium.

The Podluian Orchestra and Dance Ensemble from Bfeclav, Czechoslovakia were made welcome among those in attendance. I took note of how much they enjoyed eating kukufice (corn) off the cob. As they continue to appear in other places in Texas, I am sure their introduction to our American holiday of Thanksgiving will be an overwhelming feast to them.

While in the Bryan area, we could not forego the opporunity to visit the Memorial Center on the campus of Texas A&M University at College Station where my brother, Lt. Col. Anthony Tirk, Jr. is listed as one of the cadets killed in active duty during World War II. While on the campus, every student we met on the sidewalk recognized us with a greeting. This one beautiful gesture, to me, overshadows the many Aggie jokes.

Being only 15 miles from Snook, Texas, we visited the sausage factory near that town and closer to our home one of the kolache bakeries in West.

We know that we will enjoy everything

that was purchased and even share with others.

I hope all of you readers have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Dallas Circle Of Czech Women How wonderful to see so many of our members come to the November 6th meeting so that they would be included on the group picture of our Krouzek. The photographer took several shots so we are sure to have several to pick from . It was especially nice to see Mary Nesuda (95 years young), Libby Smith, Josephine -Kankrlik, Rose Noska, Esther Cunningham, Mildred Chervenka and Theresa Carper.

The guests were Bob Zvolanek, Phil Reames, John Trojacek, Frank Noska, Arnold Vrla, Julius Podhrasky, Charlie Kocian, Robert Cunningham, Roy Alholm, Milton Nesuda, Amelia Strange, Frank Houzvicka and little Jessica.

President Zvolanek opened our meeting with the pledge to the flag and a moment of silence was observed for departed Jerry Matous (brother of Sister Helen Vrla, Sr. and uncle of Helen Vrla, Jr.), for Stacy Jurcik (aunt of Bertha Podhrasky, Frances Jurcik, sister - in - law of Sister Libby Slovak and Sister Vlasta Jurcik), and for Al Blake who we all knew from Sokol Zizka.

Minutes of the October meeting and treasurer's reports were given. There were no corrections.

Correspondence was received from the Cal Farley's Boys Ranch and the American Lung Association.

Membership chairman reported all members are paidup for the year.

Three new members were signed up at this month's meeting. Welcome Annie Staglik, Bobbie Anne Bickle (mother and daughter) and Nita Houzvicka.

Sunshine Chairman Adelle Vlk sent get well greetings to Josephine Kankrlik, Rose Kopecek and Otto Graeser (Lillian's husband). A sympathy card was sent to Helen Vrla, Sr. Birthday cards for November celebrants were sent to Mary Nesuda, Lillian Moran, Libby Smith, Lillian Graeser and Rose Ann Parma.

Dorothy Reznik presented a birthday cake to her aunt, Lillian Moran, who was celebrating her 80th birthday.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to all birthday girls.

Hostess chairman announced hostesses for the month of November; namely, Dorothy Reznik, Millie Noska, Libby Slovak and Lillian Moran. Last month I failed to mention who served at our October meeting -Anne Zvolanek, Mary Sebestik, Lillian Graeser and Alice Roberts.

The Telephone Committee contacted everyone to come to the November meeting to have their picture taken. It was also reported that Sister Mary Dusek has a new room Number 206 at the Doctor's Nursing Center.

Bertha Podhrasky reported on the Czech Day at the Fair. She thanked all the sisters who donated their time in working in the Czech Museum.

Souvenir pins and books are still on sale at this time for those interested in purchasing these items. President Zvolanek thanked those who brought pastries to the social at Sokol Hall.

Zdenka Skotak was congratulated for being chosen "Queen for the Day" at the Fair on Czech Day. Dorothy Reznik announced the date of the Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council meeting to be held at the SPJST Lodge No. 84 with the same lodge hosting.

Under old business, everyone was reminded to attend the Christmas party at Northlake Wyatt's Cafeteria on Thursday, December 4th at 10:15 a.m. We will have our meeting first, then lunch and a short program.

Please bring your wrapped prize. It would be nice if you would wrap it in Christmas paper to fit the occasion.

Mildred Chervenka spoke on the CEFT Czech Chair Fund and how much need there is for any donations from people here in Texas and elsewhere. Our circle will donate towards this from what monies we collect at our December meeting. We also voted to donate, once again, to the Ronald McDonald House and to the Veterans Hospital Gift Shop in memory of Marie Toberny.

Donations to our circle this month were from Libby Slovak and family and Vlasta Jurcik in memory of Stacy Jurcik. Lillian Graeser made a donation for the pillow made by Sister Skotak. The money from ticket sales for pillows donated by Zdenda Skotak was given to our Circle.

President Zvolanek recognized David Podhrasky for all his help during the year to our Krouzek in setting up tables, etc.

Now for the news of our Circle members and their families -- Teresa Noska (Millie's granddaughter) will be marching in the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. She is with the Garland High School Drill Team.

Bertha Malik spent two weeks visiting with friends in Portland, Oregan. Renee Zvolanek of Austin was presented at the Longfellows Debutante Ball in Longview, recently.

She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Ervin E. Zvolanek of Longview and the granddaughter of Joe W. Zvolanek of Temple. She is also the niece of Bob and Anne Zvolanek .

Miss Zvolanek attends the University of Texas in Austin and is majoring in Business Administration.

She is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Social Sorority and of Christ Campus Crusade for International.

I am very proud of my 8th grader Jonathan who made the Honor Roll (all As) at Lake Highland's Junior High. The teachers told me, at Open House, that Jonathan was indeed a success story. He has, all of a sudden, blossomed into a fine scholar. I feel it is all a result of what good work our Governor Mark White did in promoting better study habits for our children and screening teachers. His teachers in Junior High are to be credited for his great progress.

Several of our members went by bus to attend the Czech Music in Texas Sesquicentennial Symposium in Bryan, Texas at the Brazos Center. While there we visited with some of our sisters who came by car. Many of our members performed with the Dallas Czech Singers. It was a very enjoyable two days for those who love Czech music.

This month is so full of special days such as Father of Texas Day -November 3rd, Election Day -November 4th, Veterans Day -November 11th, and Thanksgiving -November 27th.

In these times of adversity we all have to live one day at a time with only our faith to carry us through tomorrow.

Czech Research Library To Be Established

The Czech Heritage Society of South Texas in Corpus Christi has begun a major undertaking which is expected to project the organization into the forefront of the Czech community in the State of Texas, according to society President Alvin J. Prochaska.

To begin with, the society will be restoring a vintage Czech - Texan built house which will be prominently located in the Heritage Park section of Multicultural Plaza, a major civic undertaking in the Corpus Christi Bayfront Arts and Sciences Park adjacent to the Bay front Plaza Convention Center in Corpus Christi.

When restoration to its original state is complete, the house will serve as the permanent headquarters of the society.

Most significant, however, will be the establishment of a Czech History and Genealogy Research Library combined with a photo gallery of South Texas Czech pioneers, Prochaska indicated.

It is believed that the undertaking of the establishment of this particular library will not only be unique, but the first and only one of its kind in the State of Texas.

The Czech Heritage Society of South Texas received its State Charter on September 11, 1980, after months of organizational efforts. Prochaska was co - founder, assisted in the writing of the Bylaws and Constitution, and was the Charter vice president. He is now in his fourth term as president. He also organized the Czech Heritage Singers.

The society, which has grown to over 450 members, now also presents a

Wednesday, November 26, 1986—VESTNIK /7 Czech Heritage Festival early each Spring. The celebration is held in the Exhibit Hall of the Bayfront Plaza Convention Center, a gigantic weatherproof facility in Corpus Christi.

March 28, 1987, will be the date of the next festival. Right now it is a one - day event, but it is expected to expand in the future.

At the moment, however, the prime focus is the newest project -restoration of a historic house to serve as headquarters of the society and the establishment of the Czech History and Genealogy Research Library.

Karas Of Houston During this year's musical symposium taking place at the occasion of the 150th birthday of Texas it is very appropriate to remember an outstanding Czech musical composer. The Czech nation is fortunate to have quite a few excellent composers. Which one thus to choose?

As the multitude of Czech Texans is from Valagsko (Northeastern Moravia), from around FrSrdek (where Valagsko is changing to Silesia) or from the Czech Silesia proper, I chose for this reason the excellent choir director, orchestra conductor and the outstanding musical composer Pavel KfisikovskS7 who was born in Silesia and who lived quite a few years of his adult life in Brno, the capitol city of Moravia.

Pavel KilikovskSr (baptized by the name Karel), the composer and foremost resurrector of the Czech singing, was born on the 9th of January 1820 in the historical village of Holasovice, sometimes called Holasice, in Silesia. This village, as any other place in the Czech lands under Austro - Hungarian Empire, had up to 1918 also a German name Kreuzendorf, which, translated into English, could have several related meanings. Kreuzen is an infinitive of the German verb to cross and Das Dorf is a noun in German for a village.

As this village is located on the right bank of the river Opavice close to the border of, at that time Kingdom of Prussia, the name Kreuzendorf could

thus mean a crossing village (or crossing place) across the Opavice River or a crossing across the border of Prussia. --- Kingdom of Prussia seized almost all of Silesia in the first Austro Prussian War in 1743. Silesia was, at that time, a hereditary land of the Czech kings; it was lost to the Czech crown at the beginning of the reign of Empress Maria Theresia (1740 - 1780).

After Otto Bismark (known as The Iron Chancellor of Germany) united the German states into the Second Reich, the mentioned borderline with Prussia became, from 1870 to 1945, the official border with Germany and since the end of WWII it is a border with Poland. --- The village of Holasovice is in the Opava County and before also belonged to former administrative region called Hejtmanstvi in Opava. The closest parsonage, rectory and church were located during Kil1kovskk's life in .Neplachovice, and the post office was in Skrochovice. According to the excellent Ott& naue'nSr slovnik (Otta's Encyclopedia) 1890 edition, Holasovice, the birthplace of Pavel (Paul) Ktilkovsk, had at that time, 94 houses' and 700 hundred people with more than 560 of them speaking Czech. There was a one - room school, the guard house for the custom officers, two mills and the railway station in the village. The railtrack going through there was at that time called Central Moravian - Silesian Railroad (Olomouc - Krnov - Opava).

At the site of present Holasovice it was before the XII century a castle, and here was a main center of the at that time extensive Holasovice region, which also was at that era called Golesisko; when in the later times Opava became a town, Holasovice lost its importance, the name of the region changed to Opava region and its administration also moved to Opava.

Later Holasovice belonged in 1130 to the office of provost at the cathedral of St. Wenceslas in Olomouc and afterwards it belonged to the Dukes of Olomouc, to the Moravian margraves and directly to the Czech Kings. In the XIV century the owners were Piemyslovska knfiata z Opavy (Premyslide Dukes of Opava) and for some time after the year of 1377 the owners were the Dukes of Krnov.

During The Thirty Years' War (1618 1648) Holasovice was completely ruined, later in 1778 it was headquarters of the Prussian army. At that time, 1778 - 79, there was another Austro - Prussian War, this time because of the Bavarian heritage.

When Austria laid claim to Bavaria after the death of its King Maxmilian Joseph, the Prussian King Friedrich II invaded Bohemia as he did 3 times before already during the reign of Maria Theresa. This war ended by a peace treaty in rain when Austria, instead of Bavaria, obtained part of the city of Inn. --- In the first Austro Prussin War (1740 - 42) Friedrich II seized almost all of Silesia and also Kladsko; both these territories were undivided crownlands of the Czech (Bohemian) Kingdom. Second war between Austria and Prussia (1744 45) and The Seven Year War 1756 1763 did not force the Prussians to return the stolen lands belonging to our old country. --- The village of Skrochovice, where the closest post office was for the birthplace of KiTikovskST, in 1890 had 70 houses and 560 people. This settlement located at the railroad Krnov - Opava had at that time a telegraph office, a mill, a sugar refinery and a chemical factory. The village of Neplachovice, where a nearest parsonage and church was for KiakovskST 's Holasovice, in 1890 had

a population of 516 people (36 of them Germans), and there were 89 houses in the community. The parsonage exists here since 1257 and the church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. In this village was a one - room school, a mill, Czech Farmers Bank and a large agricultural estate named Neplachovice - Jemnice with the old chateau, which was owned in 1890 by Gizela Elgger from Fromberk.

Jemnice, often called Jamnice (Jamnitz in German), part of the above - mentioned estate, had the nearest parsonage and a post office in Stebofice, which itself, centuries ago, was a large estate presented by the margrave Vladislav Jindfich (brother of the Czech King and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV) to the monastery at Velehrad. Jemn ice or Jamnice is mentioned for the first time in 1250. In XVII century there existed here a large independent agricultural estate, which belonged to MI (George) Seliha z Ruchova in 1620. In 1638 the owner was Jan (John) z Hortunkova, whose descendants lived here for more than 150 years. Further records are almost non - existent because they contain just 2 owners. One of these was Jan (John) Beyer and the other was Vaclav (Wenceslas) Jemnic14, who lived here

in 1797. In 1890, when Jemnice had 44 houses and 308 people, the owner was already - mentioned Gizela Elgger.

Karel KfakovskS7 spent his childhood at his uncles Jacob and John, who were cobblers and also musicians.

Uncle Jacob, who took over little Karel's upbringing from his poor parents, was a well - known clarinetist.

It was though decided that little Karel (Charles) would learn a trade, never mind his outstanding musical talent he showed by learning, without any help, to play on the clarinet and to understand notes. As a matter of fact, he was often spanked, when, against the school regulations, he went to the taverns to listen to the bands playing in there, and later, when he would --even though he had been forbidden --run to Opava on Sundays, 2 hours away, there to listen to the church music. Meantime in 1826 he started his elementary education in close by Neplachovice where he was able to start singing and learn music at the local teacher Alexander Urbanek. He also started to sing in the choir at the local church.

Cordial Invitation to Christmas At Old Fort Conch°, December 5-7, 1986 Fort Concho National Historic Landmark 213 East Avenue D, San Angelo, Texas HISTORY Fort Concho was founded in December 1867 at the confluence of the Concho rivers as the central point in a line of forts along the Indian frontier. The fort's strategic location allowed soldiers to move west along the Middle Concho into the Trans Pecos and Big Bend regions inhabited by the Apaches and along the North Concho onto the High Plains and the hunting grounds of the Comanches.

The fort was the start - point of the Goodnight - Loving Cattle Trail which led west to the Pecos River, then north through New Mexico into Colorado.

In 1872 and 1874 Col. Ranald Slidell Mackenzie and his 4th Cavalry campaigned against the Comanches using Fort Concho as their starting point. The 1874 campaign ended with the decisive defeat of the Comanches at Palo Duro Canyon.

Between 1875 and 1881, Fort Concho served as headquarters for Col. Benjamin Grierson's 10th Cavalry, an elite unit of black troops commanded by white officers. Their most famous campaign was conducted against Vittorio in the Big Bend area in 1880 and led to the virtual destruction of the Apache band. Only a small group led by Geronimo escaped to New Mexico and Arizona, where they were pursued for the next six years. Lt. Henry 0. Flipper, first black graduate of West Point, served at Fort Concho in 1880.

As the frontier moved steadily westward, Fort Concho declined in importance. It was closed in 1889.

Survivors of Pearl Harbor Recall "Day That Lives In Infamy"

By Javier Rodriguez Staff Writer San Antonio Light About 20 survivors of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor gathered in front of the Alamo Saturday to commemorate the 2,043 Americans who died there 44 years ago and reminded a small audience that the United States must always be vigilant to avoid another such tragedy.

"It means we need to be a nation alert with the sense of pride, the dedication, the resolve, the qualities that bind a people together in good and trying times," said Gene Camp, past president of the Alamo Chapter of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Inc. Camp delivered the keynote address during the brief morning ceremony Saturday.

Both the Alamo and Pearl Harbor, Camp told the group of about 20

survivors and about 200 observers, served as rallying points and both led to battle cries -- "Remember the Alamo" and Remember Pearl Harbor." But the battlegrounds are different in a most important way, he said, noting the Japanese attack left survivors.

"We're not heroes," Camp said.

"But we were there and we can tell it like it was."

Paul I. Jean, current president of the Alamo chapter, said he was an Army private stationed at Schoffield Barracks when the American fleet was attacked as it lay at anchor in Pearl Harbor.

The ceremony was preceded by a high school ROTC drill team competition. An all - girl Navy squad from John Marshall High School won the contest.

Later in the day, the Association of Former Prisoners of War in Romania placed a wreath at the Alamo.

A memorial that was dedicated at Praha, Texas in memory of Rev. Marcus Valenta who was getting ready to say the Mass at that Schoffield Barracks Post Chapel the morning of December 7, 1941.

Colonel Valenta remained with the 35th Infantry Division for the entire War and had served more time in a Combat Zone than any chaplain in the history of the United States Army.

Rev. Marcus Valenta was the National - Chaplain for the Pearl Harbor Survivors and held annual memorial services at Praha until his death.

State Fair Symposium

GENEALOGY WORKSHOP The State Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold a regular meeting on December 6, 1986 at the SPJST Lodge No. 29 hall at Taylor, Texas. We would like to stress the fact that the Czech Heritage Society of Texas is not just interested in genealogy. Our primary goals are to preserve the heritage, culture, language and genealogy of the Texas Czechs.

A Czech Genealogy Workshop will be held the same day. Registration will start at 9 a.m. and the workshop will continue until 4 p.m., with time out for lunch and for the Czech Heritage Society of Texas meeting.

Research experts will be speaking on how to locate your ancestors in passenger lists, courthouse records, church records and in the Federal census.

Books written by these experts will be for sale and for browsing.

SPJST Lodge No. 29 will host the seminar which will be conducted by the Czech Heritage Society of Texas. Food will be available at the hall.

To cover expenses, a $2 registration fee will be charged each person.

Sister Rohan served as auditor for 12 years, vice president 6 years and president 4 years. Brother Rohan served as an apprasier of Chapter 11 for 22 years. CHS Festival & Second Texas STT Held On October 19th, the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society held its Czech Heritage Festival and the second Texas State Taroky Tournament at the Victoria Community Center Annex.

Approximately 400 people attended with 40 Taroky players in the tournament.

After 60 rounds that took seven hours, the winners (with their address as given when they registered) were Alton Demel (Kathy) -- 1st place $100 plus a plaque; Ben Janacek (Karnes City) -- 2nd place $75 plus a plaque; Joseph D. Janak Sr. -- 3rd place $50 plus a plaque; Tim Janacek -- 4th place, a deck of Taroky cards.

Food offered for sale was noodle soup, sausage links, sauerkraut and kolache.

From The Youth Leaders From The State Youth Director DECEMBER VESTNIK PROJECT CHRISTMAS CUSTOMS IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA How warmly the Czech people celebrate Christmas! It was and still is a deeply stirring family reunion starting with prayers. The eldest of the family begins by reading a part of the Bible about the trip of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. After prayers and Christmas Eve supper, someone would secretly leave the dining room and go into the living room to light the candles and later turn the lights on the decorated Christmas tree.

There was an old custom in some villages in eastern Moravia, and more so in Slovakia, that is still practiced today on Christmas Eve night. The farmers went to their fruit trees in the orchard and put bones around the roots to assure an abundant crop. It was also customary to take a part of each Christmas food to give to the domestic animals; to the hens to ensure plenty of eggs, to the cows so they

would give more milk and to the pigs so they would fatten properly.

Another custom was to cut an apple in half to foretell from the picture of the core and seeds. If there was the shape of a cross, it meant an unfortunate fate for the one who cut the apple. But if the shape was that of a star, that meant that person would have a happy year. The same was done with a walnut broken in half.

The practice of forcing cherry blossoms into bloom for Christmas is another very old custom in Czechoslovakia. At the start of Advent, a branch from a healthy tree is cut and placed in water in the kitchen.

The flowering branch serves, not only as a harbinger of spring, but also as a beautiful decoration for Christmas. If the branch blossoms forth on Christmas Eve, good fortune is in store for the maiden who cut it and cared for it, for she is sure to find a good husband within the year. ***

From The Youth Leaders Lodge 6 Cottonwood YC News Dear Members and Friends: The youth met on November 9th at 2:30 p.m. with a fair attendance.

On October 10th, 17th and 24th, the club members did crafts, also held games and held socials.

October 31st they held a Halloween party and had a spookhouse. Everyone had lots of fun and enjoyed hot dogs, goodies and sodawater.

Our clubbers brought cakes to the West Rest Haven, also donated coffee cans with lids to Caritas to be used to distribute powdered laundry detergent to the needy, donated items to the St. Mary's Day Care which will be opening soon.

The Appreciation Supper on November 9th was well - attended. The youth club had a Bingo social (no money involved, just gifts). The gifts were donated by our club members and the callers were former youth club members Terry Hykel and Karen Hykel Kroll. Thank you for helping us. Everyone enjoyed these games and after a good supper, we had enjoyable music furnished by Bobby Dobecka.

On November 21st the youth club had a hayride and a wiener roast.

Everyone was asked to invite a friend.

We also practiced for our Christmas program. Our program and supper will be held on December 7th. We start with a lodge meeting at 1 p.m., youth club meeting will begin at 2:30 p.m., supper at 5 p.m., youth club program after supper with Santa Claus and exchange of gifts plus distributing fruit sacks from Santa.

We will practice again on December 5th and I need everyone to come and practice because I need all of you, so don't forget.

We will have a bake sale on one of the Fridays before Christmas.'

Birthday celebrants for November are Christi Mach, Michele Mach and Marvin Mynar, Jr. Keith Hykel brought the cake. Tammi Dobecka will bring the cake for our December meeting.

Lodge 24 Cyclone YC Activities Dear Readers, The monthly meeting of Lodge 24 Youth Club was held on November 12, 1986 beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by President Christy Marek. Melanie Zavodny and Janet Macek led the Pledge of Allegiance.

In attendance we had twenty members, one guest Chad Bruggman, and three adults Mrs. Jane Bruggman, Mrs. Nancy Posvar and Mrs. Judy Jeske.

Under unfinished business we decided to cancel out on the Christmas Parade float due to lack of time.

We also decided to come back to Flag Hall instead of going out to eat when we finish Christmas caroling at the Southland Villa Nursing Home in Temple.

On Sunday, November 16th we had a Christmas party practice at the lodge hall. We also drew names at this meeting for our Christmas party to be held on December 14th.

Janet Macek gave the treasurer's report. In our fund we had $462.29.

Our youth club has decided to give the Child Abuse Program $15; also each youth child was asked to bring from 50 cents to a $1 and/or a small gift to the November 16th practice.

November birthdays include Brent Vanicek, Gary Coots, Kenneth Jeske, Jason Harvell, Bradley Marek and John Paul Chervenka.

Door prize winners were Melissa Holtman and Zachery Schneider.

The next meeting will be held December 10th beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The last meeting was held on November 6th at 7 p.m. in the Commercial State Bank Gold Room.

President Jody Henderson called the meeting to order. Secretary Kim Kacal read the meeting. Darren Dybala called the roll and collected dues.

The Christmas party will be on December 4th, for which we will bring a gift for the needy. We brought baby items for the needy.

We made gifts for our mothers for Christmas.

After our meeting was adjourned Mrs. Borak served refreshments.

Lodge 66 Meeting & Halloween Party Dear Members, On October 20th, we had our youth club meeting with eight members present.

We voted to bring canned goods to our November meeting to make a basket for the needy.

We also finalized the plans for our Halloween party. We had our party on Monday, October 27th. We all had a great time.

We had a costume contest that was divided into three age categories. In age group 4 to 6 Amanda Neslony, Steven Warren and Matthew Pavlicek won; age group 7 to 12 -- Pat Wright, Chris Pavlicek and Candace Pavlicek won; Age group 13 to 17 -- Chris Owen, Donna Stanislav and Larry Yates won. I would like to thank our judges, Ira Niswanger, George Shilling and Paul.

We also had a Pinata which we all enjoyed very much. We "bobbed" for apples and had a wiener roast.

We would like to say a special thank you to Charlie and Irene Mueller for the hay and trailer for our hayride. We all enjoyed the ride very much.

We all had a great time at our party and we want to thank everyone who had a part in making it successful.

Dear Members and Friends: The Lodge 47 Seaton Youth Club meeting was held on November 2, 1986. There were twenty - one members and seven guests present.

Our social for the month was to go bowling at Action World Bowl Center and afterwards go eat pizza on Sunday, November 16th.

We wish to express our sadness at the recent loss of brother MOJMIR TRUKSA, who was a member of SPJST Lodge Thomas Jefferson No. 149, Alvin since 1928. He served as an officer in various different positions for many years. He will be deeply missed.

Brother Mojmir Truksa, 77, of Alvin, passed away on October 15, 1986 at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was born March 7, 1909 in Port Lavaca and was a resident of Alvin for 69 years. He was employed

by Phillips Petroleum Company in

Wednesday, November 26, 1986—VESTNIK/11 Chocolate Bayou and served as an appraiser for Germania Insurance after his retirement until he became ill.

Brother Truksa left as survivors, his wife, Mrs. Ella Truksa of Alvin; a sister, Miladie Borm of Hamilton, Montana; a brother, Otto Truksa of Alvin, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews and other friends and relatives.

Funeral services were held on October 18th in Froberg Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lloyd Seabolt officiating. Interment was in the Confederate Cemetery under the direction of Froberg Funeral Home, Inc. May he rest in peace.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple, in behalf of the officers and entire membership wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of ROSE HE NDLER who passed away on Tuesday, November 6, 1986, in a Dallas nursing home, at the age of 90 years.

Mrs. Hendler, formerly of Temple, was born in Lithuania. She was a retired merchant of Temple and the widow of Selig Hendler.

Services for Rose Hendler were held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 7th at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home on Garland Road in Dallas with Cantor Nathan Kaplan _officiating.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. at Rodef Sholom Cemetery in Waco with Rabbi Mordecai Podet officiating.

Survivors include one son, Dr. Albert Frank Hendler of Dallas; one daughter, Florence Hendler Feldt of Houston; ten grandchildren and eleven great - grandchildren.

She was a member of Lodge No. 87.

Golden Anniversary Couple Honored On On November 9, 1986, Mr. and Mrs. Henry 0. Baros of Westhoff were honored with a celebration in observance of their 50th wedding anniversary. The event took place at the Westhoff American Legion Hall.

The reception dinner and dance were hosted by their son, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Baros of Westhoff and their daughter, Mrs. Glenneth Kraatz of Victoria.

On Saturday, October 4, 1986, Miss Donna Kay Steger and Tim Vanecek were united in marriage in St. Paul Lutheran Church. The Rev. David Bulgerin and the Rev. Lonnie Urban officiated at the 3 p.m. ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Steger of Taylor. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. John Schneider of Taylor, Mrs. W.C. Steger of Temple and the great granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Wendler of Bartlett.

The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mr. Dan Vanecek of Taylor. He is the grandson of Mrs. Marcella Gola of Taylor and George Vanecek of Granger.

Church decorations included lighted hurricane lamps lining the aisle. On the altar were two candelabras with greenery and two brass urns arranged with carnations and gladiolas in shades of peach and teal green.

Wedding music was offered by Becky Kubala, organist and vocalist, and Terry Hughes, vocalist.

Veronica Schneider attended the bride as honor attendant. Bridesmaids were Pam Butler, sister of the bride, Brenda Urbanek and Jennifer Zavala.

They wore floor - length dresses of moire taffeta designed with a fitted bodice and V - neckline and puffed sleeves. They carried a single, peach colored silk flower with greenery.

Ashley Butler was flower girl. She was dressed in a peach - colored, floor - length moire taffeta dress with lace trim on the rounded neckline. She carried a basket of flowers.

Tom Vanecek served his brother as best man. Groomsmen were Steven Saul, Kevin Kostroun and Jeff Manning.

Ushers were Andy Bulgerin, Mark Steger, brother of the bride, Raj Nadkarni, Chris Sikes, Richard Moore and Scotty Casey.

Jason Cockrum was ring bearer.

Candlelighters were Mark Steger, brother of the bride, and Richard Moore.

The bride was escorted to the altar by her father. She had chosen a Victorian - inspired gown designed with a fitted bodice of Venise lace re embroidered with pearls. The leg o'mutton sleeves were of illusion with lace appliques. Her full, satin skirt was scalloped at the hemline with lace medallions and extended to a cathedral train.

She wore a picture hat with Venise lace, pearls and silk flowers.

The bridal bouquet was of peach colored and white roses, carnations, baby's breath and greenery.

Following the ceremony, a dinner and dance reception was held at the Taylor SPJST Hall. Houseparty members included Nana Krieg, Sue Rieger, Janie Kollman, Inge Havalda, Diane Havalda, Jennifer Havalda, Barbara Leech, Jeana Matetzschk, Martha Wagner, Jan Wagner, Darlene Waiser, Frances Gomez, Kay Motal.

the room. There were also garlands, bells, ferns and balloons, all in the chosen colors of peach and teal green.

The bride and groom cake tables were set with lace clothes as were the tables for the wedding party. Other tables featured skirts of lace and ribbons with hurricane lamps as centerpieces.

Dance music was by Breakaway.

The bride is a 1982 Taylor High School graduate and is employed by State Farm Insurance Company in Austin.

The bridegroom is a 1982 graduate from Taylor High School and a 1986 graduate of the University of Texas with a BA in Computer Science.

Following a wedding trip to Jamaica, the couple will make their home in Taylor.

A rehearsal dinner was hosted by the groom's parents at their home on Friday evening.

The bride and groom are both members of SPJST Lodge No. 29, and the bride is presently serving as youth club leader. The bride's parents are also members of Lodge 29. Her father, Melvin Steger, has been recently elected president for 1987.

American College of Physicians Dr. Ben A. Merrick In honor of their loyalty and longstanding membership in the AMERICAN COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS The Laureate Awards for 1986 are presented to: Ben A. Merrick, MD, F.A.C.P. and Julian C. Barton, MD, F.A.C.P. The distinguished physician that the North Texas Region honors today was born Benjamin August Mikulencak, May 19, 1913 in Granger, Texas, the tenth of ten children, all of whom spoke Czech before learning English.

He was valedictorian of the Granger High School Class in 1931, took his pre - medical training at Baylor Belton College and the University of Texas, and his M.D. from Baylor University College of Medicine in 1938. A third year Alpha Omega Alpha, he graduated near the top of his class, in close competition with two other notable physicians, E.R. Hayes, MD, F.A.C.P. and the late Dr. Charles T. Ashworth.

Dr. Merrick took his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Baylor Hospital and at this time Anglicized his name to Merrick, in the time - honored American melting pot tradition, and to the relief, no doubt, of hospital page operators.

There followed illustrious service with the 56th Evacuation Hospital (the Baylor Unit) for two and a half years that included North Africa, Italy, and the. Anzio Beachhead. He edited (1945) "The History of the 56th Evacuation Hospital," which book was used in part for the movie, "The Homecoming," which starred Clark Gable and Lana Turner.

Dr. Merrick was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1946 having taken the written part of the examination two years

previously in a hospital tent north of Florence, Italy. The examination was proctored by Dr. Merrick's Chief, the late Dr. Henry Winans, Sr. Dr. Merrick became a Fellow of the college in 1956.

Subsequently; in 1946 Dr. Merrick embarked upon his career in private practice, teaching and public service conducting teaching rounds at St. Paul Hospital that included Drs. Tinsley Harris, Henry Winans, Grady Reddick and Arthur Grollman. Among many services and activities, Dr. Merrick has been President of the Dallas County Medical Society (1963) and as such was part of the welcoming committee for a President who never arrived. He was President of the Baylor University Medical Center Medical Staff, President of the Dallas Academy of Internal Medicine, and of the Dallas Internists Club.

As significant and colorful as all these contributions have been they do not fully express our reasons for honoring Dr. Merrick today. This special quality that we recognize today in Dr. Merrick is for having done what every one of us in his heart truly aspires to do: He has gotten up every morning for 40 years, gone to work, been an extremely effective physician and finished strong.

Ben and Letha, who were married in 1979 after their respective first spouses had passed away on, share 5 children between them, and 8 grandchildren.

We wish Dr. and Mrs. Merrick a happy and active retirement. We honor ourselves and our profession by naming Ben A. Merrick, MD, F.A.C.P. the Texas Academy Chapter, North Texas Region, Laureate for 1986.

(Editor's Note: Congratulations from the SPJST Society! Dr. Merrick has held an SPJST insurance policy since 1937, enjoys reading the Vestnik each week and his mother, Anna Mikulencak of Granger, also an SPJST member, died at age 103 in January 1971. He still is able to speak and write Czech fairly well and is a trustee of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas. This editor wonders if the other awardee, Julian C. Barton is also of Czech ancestry.)

Enjoyable Activities At S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1

Other projects included a program on bluebonnets, with a painting of bluebonnets given to a resident as a door prize. Also a private manicure for any resident wanting their nails done.

Bud vases of flowers were made and placed on the dinner tables for special holidays.

The Taylor Garden Club president, Mrs. Jo Ann Frankeny, said they had many other projects such as beautifying the City Park, the Hike

and Bike Trail, the Lou Bell Harris Garden Center, and the Moody Museum. They also sponsor a Christmas Door Contest, Arbor Day Tree Planting, and a flower show every year.

The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home residents recognized that the Community Concern Project brought them closer together and gave them something to look forward to each month.

Sixtieth Anniversary Celebrants Joe and Gustie Kudelka of Alvin will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Sunday, November 30th at the Germania Hall in Alvin from 1 to 4 p.m. Their family asks that their friends and relatives gather their memories and stop by for a visit with them at this time.

Texas Czechs Souvenirs The American - Czech Culture Society is offering a selection of souvenirs commemorating the participation of Texans of Czech Ancestry in the 1986 Texas Sesquicentennial.
