It was announced the Youth Leaders' Retreat is scheduled for February and the LIT Retreat is scheduled for April.

Windshield Sticker - It was agreed to obtain window sticker SPJST logos and that they be distributed to our members by enclosure with billing notices and otherwise.

U.S. Constitution Project - It was agreed to endorse promotion of the NFCA U .S. Constitution celebration project.

SP JST History - Furnishing of a copy of the SP JST History book to those institutions qualifying for Czech language grants was authorized.

Advertising Display - It was agreed that the officers look into suitable portable advertising displays.

Recess for lunch was taken.

Scholarship Program - Changes to the rules of the scholarship program were recommended and considered.

The· following changes were approved: (1) Limit to one scholarship per individual for applicants in the 1987 88 school year and thereafter (starting with the 1987 - 88 school year, no more than one scholarship will be awarded to any applicant during his/her scholastic years.

(2) Require full benefit membership of a minimum of at least one year prior to application date.

(3) Minimum insurance requirement discontinued.

Office Equipment - Request was made for authorization to purchase telephone answering machines for the four SP JST field representatives. The request was approved.

New Insurance Plans - Report was made on status of new plans of insurance.

Sales Representative Misrepresentations - Report was made on three material misrepresentations of life insurance application by SP JST sales representatives. After review of the matter a motion was adopted whereby the Supreme Lodge is directing the Insurance Department to establish a procedure for such occurrences allowing a probationary period for first offense and dismissal on the second offense. Opportunity for a hearing would be afforded.

VII An informal session was held primarily for the purpose of setting the agenda ťor the day and recess was taken until 4:30 p.m. to allow time for meetings of the Products Committee, the Fraternal Activities Committee and the Financial Planning Committee.

The meeting was called back to order at 4:30 p.m. and the entire Board viewed the final draft of a video program on Czech history and culture.

The meeting recessed at 5:15 p.m. and was called back to order at 8:30 a.m. on October 7, 1986.

Minutes The minutes of the July 7 - 9, 1986 Supreme Lodge meeting were considered and approved on motion duly adopted.

Reports The Supreme Lodge officers' reports were acknowledged on motion duly passed. The reports will be placed of record in Exhibit Volume 5.

Old Business Czech History /Culture Video - The video program developed by KNCT for the SP JST and public television was approved.

The following motion was adopted: (1) To obtain 30 copies for loan from the LAM and the Video cassettes be marked with instruction that they are the property of SP JST and they cannot be altered or copied without written permission of SPJST. (2) That contact be made with the Institute of Texan Culture in San Antonio to try to get it on their viewing agenda.

Domino Tournament (1987) - The following motion was adopted: That the. tournament begin at a local lodge level and the top two teams in each participating lodge be authorized to go to the state domino tournament.

The sum of up to $1500 was authorized for the straight and 42 domino tournaments.

Taroky Tournament (1987) - After discussion a Taroky tournament was authorized on motion duly carried. It was understood that the participants must register with a local lodge. Funds to put on the tournament were authorized.

One hundred dollars ($100) would be paid to the lodge hosting the state. tournament to defray their cost. This amount to be paid from tournament expenses.

Fraternal Fest - The matter of a Fraternal Fest for 1987 was considered. It was tentatively decided that a Fraternal Fest be scheduled for

1987 with details to be worked out later.

The Fraternal Activities Committee was charged with the responsibility of planning the fest, recommending a location and a method of handling the activity.

Recess for lunch was taken.

Youth Department - A list of the expenditures and projections of costs for 1987 were reviewed.

SP JST Lodge - Representatives of a local lodge appeared before the Board.

They explained their short - term need for funds to improve the facility. A motion was made to execute the loan.

Youth Department - It was agreed to have a Leaders - In - Training Retreat in 1987.

Youth Camp - Report was made that a list of youth attending camp in 1986 is now available.

Taroky Video - Purchase of 3 video training tapes of the Taroky game for the LAM was authorizěd.

Editor Rudy Sefcik - Editor Sefcik visited the meeting and was given the opportunity to bring up any item needing consideration.

NFCA Fraternal Section - It was reported that Vice President Gebala presided over the Fraternal Section at the recent NFCA meeting and he was complimented on a good job representing the Society.

Refinancing/Modification Mortgage Loans The refinancing/modification program approved in the July Supreme Lodge meeting was extended to January 31, 1987 unless withdrawn earlier by mail poll of Supreme Lodge members.

Delinquency of Local Lodge - The delinquency of a lodge building loan was considered. The prior actions were reviewed and it was decided to proceed as decided in the July Supreme Lodge meeting.

Concerning a request to rent the property, the request was tabled. It was agreed to report this action to the lodge president.

Recess for the day was taken at 5 p.m. until 8:30 a.m. on October 8, 1986.

Legal Matters - Report was heard on matters pertaining to loans, reported tax suits, threatened foreclosures, bankruptcies and problems with delays in receiving loan closing instruments from abstract companies.

Abstracts - The acceptance of abstracts to approve title in connection with loan securities was discontinued on motion duly adopted.

Child Abuse Prevention - After discussion, it was decided to encourage the participation in the program and proceed with promotion of the project.

New Business Youth Department -The request for authorization for 2 representatives per district to attend the LRL in Brownwood, including mileage reimbursement, meals and registration was approved. In selecting the two representatives, the DYC has precedence but selection of the second position should give precedence to

Delinquent Loans Recommendations on delinquent loans were considered and approved.

SP JST Mortgage Rates - Mortgage rates were lowered li.i percent. The rates are: 10 percent for 1 - 10 years 10 li.i percent for 11 - 15 years 10Y2 percent for 16 - 20 years Commerical Loans: 11 percent for 1 - 10 years 11 ll.t percent for 11 - 15 years It was agreed to continue the present loan allocation policy.

Mortgage Loan Requirements/Policy - There was a review of the mortgage loan qualification policy and the policy was left unchanged. It was agreed to allow the Investment Committee to interpret the policy and to make exceptions but that exception should not be made to the one year membership requirement.

Annuity Rate - The interest rate for the accumulation period on annuities was set at 8 Y2 percent annualized for the period from October 31, 1986 through January 31, 1987.

Burglar Alarm - A new electronic security system for the home office was approved.

Refund to Lodges - The refund to local lodges was set at 8 percent of premiums remitted to the Supreme Lodge.

Discount A & B Certificates - The usual discount of 25 percent on premiums was granted to all members in Class "A" and '.'B" . whose certificates were in force 35 years or more and who have attained the age of 70 or more, plus an· additional 25 percent discount when they attain the age of 75. The question was put and unanimously adopted.

Delegate Number Bylaw interpretation of Article 4(a) (2) concerning insurance goal was considered.

The following interpretation was approved.

1. Determine base year most advantageous to the lodge by selecting the year (1983, 1984, 1985, Qr 1986) where the lodges' net premiums income was the lowest; 2. Multiply the amount above determined by 15 percent; 3. Multiply the year with the lowest premium income by three; 4. Add 2 and 3 (above) and this is the net premium income that has to be received for the lodge to meet its goal.

Scholarship Applicants - It was decided to mail an appropriate letter to all applicants who are not selected to receive scholarships.

Loan Request - A request for a loan to construct a gymnasium type of building was discussed. Mechanical problems were discussed and the SL officers are to review and reply by letter to the association requestion the loan.

The next Supreme Lodge meeting was set to begin at 9 a.m. on January 5, 1987.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:45 p.m.

SPJST Maintenance Man Accomplished Musician

SPJST Sponsors Theme Contest The SP JST Supreme Lodge Board has authorized a theme contest for SPJST members 18 years and older.

The selected theme would be used on all 1987 publications concerning the Society. The winner will be selected by the Supreme Lodge Board at the January meeting and will receive a monetary award of $100.

The theme should be brief, concise and reflective of the Society and its endeavors.

Cottonwood Held October Meeting Dear Readers: Our October 5th meeting was held at Lodge 6. Kevin Dobecka and Keith Hykel led the pledge, also all reports were given and approved.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz reported they took cakes to the rest home. They are working on their Christmas crafts. They donated to St. Martin's Picnic, Heart Fund, March of Dimes and Muscular Dystrophy.

Sister Wille Mae Schuetz also sent get well cards to Diane Berger and David Dobecka , Brother George Straten gave the Board of Trustees' report. They are going to have an Appreciation Dinner for all the workers at the annual picnic and Westfest on November 9th. It was catered from Podzie's. They donated to the Abbott, Tours and Penelope picnics, and to St. Paul Women's Guild Bazaar.

Cyclone Lodge 24 Re-Elects Officers Dear Readers: Our November meeting was called to order by President Barbara Macek and all officers were present.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flag Bearers John Paul Chervenka and Bradly Marek.

Those on the sick list are LeVada Giestman and Johnny Svoboda. We wish you both a speedy recovery.

All committee chairmen gave their monthly reports and Terry Coots gave the Board report. Several issues were discussed concerning the Board report.

Bingo was dropped for the time being because of lack of interest by the

members; more people will have to be willing to get involved if any of the ideas are to become a reality.

There was a discussion concerning keeping the reporter's position, members then voted to keep the position and also voted to keep the salaries of the officers the same for 1987 as were for 1986.

The Rules & Regulations Committee gave their proposals and discussed the changes. The members then voted and passed the changes in the 1987 R&Rs. . Birthdays in November are John Paul Chervenka, Linda Smetanka, Jerry Zavodny, Jerry Cabla and Lynn Tschoerner.

Milton and Martha Zavodny are celebrating their anniversary. Hope you all have a special day.

The Bell County Child Welfare group is asking for donations of toys or money for Christmas presents for their children. The members decided that each family donate a new or good used toy for the children. Each family is asked to bring the toys to our next meeting ór the Christmas party on December 14th. Please participate in this and help make it a success.

Our Christmas party, as I said before, will be on December 14th starting at 3 p.m. with happy hour and eggnog. The youth club will present a program starting at 4 p.m. and afterwards exchange their gifts. A turkey and dressing meal with all the trimmings that each member brings will be served at 5 p .m. Everyone is asked to bring a vegetable and dessert.

The more food the better the meal, so make something good.ladies, Well, it was that time of the year again to vote on officers. Everything went well and here are the results.

Talton To Hold Meeting/ Christmas Party Dear Members: Our Lodge 30, Taiton meeting was held November 2, 1986 and was called to order by President Mary Mrnustik at 1:30 p.m. We were led in the Pledge of Allegiance by our youth club members.

Roll call was taken by Secretary Wanda Dorotik and the minutes of our October meeting were read and approved. It had been decided, in the October meeting, to donate a 30 dollar arrangement to the auction for the benefit of the Taiton Community Center. It was also decided to donate $10 to the youth club for their fund raiser at the Taiton Community Center Fall Festival.

Our Youth Leader Georgia Dorotik reported on the cake and animal walk at the Fall Festival. She thanked all the adult and youth members who donated and helped make the fund - raiser a success.

A 50 - dollar donation was made to the El Campo Retarded Citizens.

The December meeting and Christmas party were then discussed.

Lodge 47 Seaton Elects Officers Dear Brothers and Sisters: The last lodge meeting was held on Sunday, November 2nd at. 2 p.m. with lodge President Jerry Pechal 'onducting the meeting.

Flag Bearers Heidi Schroeder and Tacy Klusacek brought in the flags and led the pledge to our U.S. flag. We remained standing for silent tribute to the memory of Sister Marie Vanicek Maruna who passed away recently.

May she rest in peace and our deepest sympathy to the surviving family.

President Pechal welcomed alt to the meeting and recognized our visitors, Ann Balusek. Carole Pechal, Freddie Schroeder, Gert rude Kahlig, and the David Lynn family. You are being invited to the lodge meeting again.

Sister Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers and . sales representatives. The minutes of the October 12th meeting were read by our secretary and approved.

Correspondence included the acknowledgement of donation to the Blue Bonnet Chapter of the Red Cross, a thank you from Ann Hejl for get well card, and three letters from SL President Howard Leshikar regarding donating to child abuse and other agencies as the holiday season approaches and the year 1986 draws to a close, the straight domino champions, Sister Helen Janacek and Brother Joe Kohut and the lodge were congratulated, and a thank you for our lodge hosting the "42" tournament on October 18th. We will be accepting any donation, food, clothing, etc. for the child abuse program.

New members accepted into the lodge membership were Michael M. Morris (conversion), and Kenneth J. Payssee Sr.; transferees in were Charles L. Mikulas Jr. (3 policies) lrom Dallas Lodge No. 130, Mary Ann Martinez and Antonio C.S.M. Martinez from Academy Lodge No. 177. A warm welcome to each named and hope you can help with continued lodge success by attending meetings, etc.

The only members we knew of being in the hospital are Sister Mary Shenkir and Brother Anton Motl. Hope you are improving daily in your recoveries until you are well again.

Sister Rosic Craft gave the youth leader's repon ; 21 members and 9 visitors were present. Their social is bowling and pizza afterwards. She added ·that she is not a candidate for youth leader and endorsed Sister Patsy Koslovsky tor this office: The Balloting Committee consisted of Sisters Lillie Mikulas, Della Mares, Dolores Skrabanek, Ann Hejl, and Brothers Anton Vitek and Henry Janacek. Brother Woodrow Marek presented those eligible for office and those who were on this committee were Sisters. Georgia Sodek and Ruth Janacek, and Lodge 47 Secretary Dolores Skrabanek.

Board or Trustees for 1987 are Dan Balusek, Henry Janacek, Woodrow Marek, Calvin Skrabanek, Edward Mihatsch, Robert Heese and Dan Wiley. Congratulations to all elected and good luck in 1987.

The year is drawing to a close and the Christmas party for Lodge 47 members will be on Sunday, December 14th at 3 p.m, with the youth club's program first; 4 to 5 p.m. will be happy hour, and 5 p .m. will be serving or the turkey and dressing supper.

Members are asked to bring only salads or sweets. The lodge will furnish the rest. Notice that we have everything one hour earlier than usual so we could go home sooner. Sister Adeline and Brother Willie E. Kohutek are the coordinators of the preparations. Help will be needed, so volunteer, if possible. The cleanup afterwards will need many workers helping to wash the dishes, pots and pans. Be there!

Lodge 80 To Hold Annual Meeting We held our regular monthly meeting on Sunday, November 2nd at 2 p.m. in Holland.

The meeting was called to order by President Bohac at the above stated time.

Members present were asked by the president to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and also were asked to remain standing for a moment of silence for our deceased member s.

The roll call of officers showed that our financial secretary, Sister Glenda Liles, was absent due to other commitments. The minutes from our October meeting were read by Secretary Latham. After the chair asked for any corrections or additions, they were accepted as read by the secretary.

For correspondence, a letter from the Supreme Lodge regarding the contribution of local lodges details I didn't quite get due to my hearing.

Morc on this matter next time.

The secretary gave us a report on the income and expenses of the various departments of our lodge. According to his report, it looks like our expenses arc getting ahead of our income; our insurance, utilities, and liability insurance bills are outrageous. It seems as if we just have to work here at our lodge to keep up payments for the above - mentioned items.

New members accepted at our November meeting are Misty Parker, Dusty Parker, and Scotty Parker (additional insurance).

A standing ovation was given to Brother Jo1.· and Sister Mary Barabas on their 65th wedding anniversary this month.

Celebrating birthdays in November present at the meeting were Edwin Balusek and his mother, Bertha Balusek.

Czechoslovakian Orchestra To Perform AtLodge80 HOLLAND Podlužan, a Czechoslovakian orchestra and dance troupe, will be performing at the SPJST Lodge No. 80 near Holland, Wednesday, November 26th. .

The group is touring the state of Texas now until early December and they are composed of eight musicians with eight dancers, all of whom wear their colorful native costumes during performance.

Based in the city of Břeclav, Moravia, Podlužan has toured Europe several times, and has recently returned from a very successful tour of Italy. The group has been in existence for 20 years and is one of the finest of its kind in Czechoslovakia.

Known in Czechoslovakia as a "Cymbal" orchestra because the cymbal, or hammered dulcimer, is its lead instrument, Podlužan specializes in the performance of Moravian folk

music, although it also performs music for ballroom dancing. Podlužan will be the first Czechoslovakian cymbal orchestra to perform in Texas, but the cymbal has been featured in some Texas Czech bands of the past, most notably the Ray Baca band of Fayetteville in Fayette County.

This "goodwill tour" of Podlužan , in honor of Texans of Czech descent on the occasion of their state's Sesquicentennial year, is part of a cultural exchange negotiated by Professor Clinton J. Machanu, of Texas A&M University, with the Českovslovenský Ústav Zahraniční in Prague and is coordinated by Jody Bates of the Brazos County Sesquicentennial Commission.

The first performance of Podlužan was part of a program, "Czech Music iu Texas: A Sesquicentennial Symposium" in Bryan, Texas during November 14th - 16th. By the way this event was organized by the Czech Ex Students Association of Texas (CESA T) and the Brazos County Sesquicentennial Commission and has received funding from the Texas Committee for the Humanities and the SPJST, as well as other individuals and organizations.

I wish to conclude that I am very proud of Lodge 80 in Holland for making it possible to sponsor the "Special Pre - Thanksgiving Night" for the Central Texas area members and friends who will have an opportunity to enjoy the performance

of eye glasses yet many people experience the need for glasses but do not have the money to buy them.

Our project here at Lodge 88 of collecting old eye glasses from members who have had prescription changes has proved very successful in the past few months since its inception.

Over 60 pairs have been donated and these have been turned over to the Lighthouse For The Blind, Houston.

You probably have wondered how old glasses might be used by someone else and especially by the Lighthouse For The Blind. Well, I pondered that question myself so I asked the Lighthouse, the recipient of your donated eye glasses.

Well, the answer sounded very logical to me so Ithought that all of us should know so here goes. (On second thought why should we learn so much so soon so look for the answer in a future copy of your Vestnik. --- So that sure is a lot of SOs in this sentence, isn't it?

In the meantime some more lodge members have "answered the call."

Lodge 92 To Host Christmas Party Dear Members and Friends: President Albert Kubala opened our Novem ber meeting on a great Autumn afternoon that solicited one's attention on the pleasant out - of - doors, but "business before pleasure." Youth club member Jon Eric Paprskar led the assemblage in the Pledge of Allegiance. Minutes of the October meeting were read and approved, also were the reports of all other officers, One new member was announced and accepted.

Following old and new business an Electing Committee was named: Liz Howard, Carl Zich and Martha Durham, and the voting procedure was expedited because of unanimous re election of several officers. The results are as follows: President -- Albert Kubala Vice President -- John Paprskar Secretary -- Christine Zich Treasurer -- Rose Jaworski Financial Secretary -- Evelyn Spacek Youth Leader -- Gordon Hubenak Assistant YL -- Cheryl Hubenak The youth club will select the flag

bearer in 1987. Richard Hubenak remains as our guide.

Our Board of Trustees for the next year will consist of Albert Kubala, John Paprskar, Al Kercho, Rose Jaworski and Kenneth Krivanek.

Fourteen senior members received birthday cards in October. Several members were ill and in the hospital; they were Millie Waters who had cardiac problems, Stephen Kercho who had knee surgery after being injured in a football game and Bennie Hundle. While this letter was being written, we learned of the death of Sister H undle. We will miss her at both the lodge functions and the Ladies' Circle gathering. Condolences were sent to the widow of Cleve Thun who died in October.

Passing on from the sober announcements that we all regret, mention has to be made of the fun we all had at the Halloween dance. The costume turnout was good and varied and the judges deliberated at length before awarding prizes. In the cake contest Jolie Paprskar won first prize with her "Ghost Cake." Second and third prizes were awarded to yours truly and Martha Durham. The pumpkin Jack -'O - Lantern contest winners determined by one cent votes were Bobby Holford, Holly Hubenak and Brette Leigh Brown. Actually they were all winners when it comes to the hard work put into them.

While the adults were occupied with the election, etc., the youth ·were busy elsewhere preparing for their part in the activities coming up for them in December. They plan to assist in the entertainment portion of the four lodge party on December 7th. Even more important to the group is their work on the Christmas and Santa party on December zr«. They were making articles to be given as door prizes on that night and are planning an auction of "Mysterious" packages.

Also there will be participation in a Nativity sketch and the candlelight procession. All youth are invited to join in this even if you have not been attending all the meetings; so, don't forget, if you've been good, plan to see Santa and be at the lodge at 5:30 p.m. that Sunday for assignments so that the program can begin at 6 p.m.

Mothers (aunts and grannies, too) please don't forget the homemade cookies to be served to all with Christmas punch and coffee.

In regard to the party on December 7th, you may wish to have the following information: Doors open at 11 a.m.

Dinner served, 12 to 2 p.m.

Installation of officers, 2 p.m.

Ennis Country . Boys to offer dancing music, 3 to 7 p.m.

Admission is free to members and tickets for non - members are $5 (adults) and $2.50 (12 and under). The barbecue and sausage dinner will be served with pastries furnished by the ladies of the lodges who are noted for their finesse with fattening desserts.

Now that you know when to come out and enjoy yourselves, let us tell you when "not" to be there. The regular monthly meeting will NOT be held the second Sunday in December.

Instead we will register at the Christmas party on December 7th.

Although those attending the Family Fun Night on October 21st had a great time at the tables of Canasta, Tripoli, Dominoes and even Trivial Pursuit, we will not have the Family Night again until January 20, 1987 because of the numerous Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and parties (and then there's all that shopping and baking to do!)

She wants to thank the sisters for their donations of cakes for the cake walk that did very well and for the goodies for the social that everyone enjoyed. The kiddos were really excited seeing B.J. (Bobby Joe Cleveland) in person and getting his autograph with him and Lester. Sister Carolyn reported they will be back for our Christmas party with Sokol Fort Worth. The date will be December 18th or 19th. (Will give more details later and date.) B. J. is a busy person; he will be hosting the Song of the South movie in Atlanta, Georgia this weekend and then MC the Miss North Texas Pageant.

Brother Jerry reported a large group of our members attended the reception for Martina Navratilova and they all got to visu with her and got autographed pictures.

He reminded us our next meeting Sunday, December 14th will be election of officers, so be sure and attend, also the Metroplex Christmas party to be hosted by Lodge 92 on December 7th. Brother Carl Johnson just returned from his hunting trip in Colorado and had good luck and Brother C.L. and Patti Gage from Wheatland, Wyoming and each got their quotas; all reported it was great.

Sister Henrietta Milan spent a week in Chicago with her family. Brother Jerry joined her the weekend to help her celebrate her 30 - year high school reunion.

We extend our get well wishes to Sister Dona Hubenak of Lodge 92 who had emergency surgery Saturday. Get well soon, Dona, and our heartfelt sympathy to· the family of Sister Bennie Hundle of Lodge 92 who passed away yesterday. May she rest in peace.

Lodge 176 Planned Christmas Party The meeting for Houston Northwest Lodge No. 176 was held on Monday, October 20, 1986.

The minutes of our last meeting were read by President Brenda Pike and were approved as read.

Lodge 180 November Meeting Dear SPJST Members: Our November 18th meeting was scheduled to be a very important one to vote for our officers and committee members for the coming year 1987.

Members were asked to help our lodge by voting in some good workers.

Our last · meeting was held on October 21st at 7:30 p.m., with President Louis Grochoske calling the meeting to order. The pledge was recited by all members.

The minutes of our last meeting were approved as read. The treasurer's report was also accepted as read, and all correspondence were read. • Various chairpersons' reports were also given and discussed.

Please remember the Christmas party for the four Lodges 92, 154, 180 and 183 to be held at Lodge 92 at 3316 Roberts Cut Off in Fort Worth on Sunday, December 7th beginning at noon. Ladies are asked to take a dessert. ,. I must say that, once again, my family had a lovely party. My youngest brother Jerry Simmank celebrated his 60th birthday and all 10 of us sisters and brothers were able to attend and enjoyed the day with a very good barbecue dinner and all other goodies.

We also played lots of games and did a lot of talking. We wish Jerry many more happy and healthy years.

We wish to send our get well wishes to all the sisters, brothers and loved ones who have been and some still are on the sick list. We hope all are on the road to recovery and feeling much better.

We also wish to extend our condolences to the family of Bennie Hundle of Lodge 92 and the Ladies' Circle of Lodge 92. Mrs. Hundle left this life November 10th. May she rest in peace.

The members of the Ladies' Circle of Lodge 92 celebrated their Thanksgiving dinner by going out to eat on November 11th; about 50 members met at the Brown Derby and had a delicious dinner. No one had to wash dishes.

Remember our dances every Saturday night from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Our meeting adjourned to a social hour and refreshments. The door prize was won by Mydell Groch oske and she donated the gift to the lodge.

1987 OFFICERS ELECTED Almost 200 individuals attended the TIP party that was held on September 28th at Lodge 187, Round Rock.

The TIP party was sponsored by the Board of Trustees of Lodge 187 in order to express appreciation to the Hutto and Thrall Booster Club members and to all of the other volunteers who work at the hall during dances and other activities. Everyone had a good time socializing, playing dominoes, playing bingo, and enjoying a catered catfish and shrimp meal.

Norman Fuessel won a beautiful handmade quilt that was given away during the TIP party.

Memories Of Lodge 45, Vlastenec

and hot dogs were available outside the hall in the concession stand, which was a separate building. If you wanted to have some refreshment you had to go outside.

It was customary for a young single man to take the girl with whom he was dancing outside for conversation and refreshment at intermission time. The boys were well aware when the band was about to take an intermission, for the band would play a fast polka such as "Julida," "Happy - Go - Lucky" or a polka version of "El Rancho Grande." The boys would try to be dancing with their favorite girl so that when the bandleader announced "Intermission," they could take her outside for refreshment. Very few boys would bring a date to the dance, for they knew if they did the other boys would make sure that he did not get a chance to take his date out at intermission.

There were no tables inside of the dance hall, just a long bench along either side, where the ladies would sit.

Some of the younger single girls would congregate near the entrance of the hall. The men and boys would stand in the center of the dance tloor and from there go and.ask the ladies for the next dance. The dancers would dance around the men and boys who remained in the center.

When intermission was over one of the musicians, usually the bandleader, would start to play "Musikanti pojďte hrat" (Musicians Come and Play), then one by one the rest of the band would join him until the entire band was back · on stage and ready to continue playing for the dance.

Many of the young boys came into the hall after the ticket booth closed, around 11 o'clock, when late comers could get in free. Up until the late 1940s ladies were admitted free, later they were only charged IO or 15 cents for admission.

The dances were attended by young entrepreneurs (of the 5 to 14 - year old variety) who made, · in some instances, more money in a night than their parents made all week. In those days beer and soft drinks were sold in returnable glass bottles. In order to insure that bottles were returned to the concession stand, a 5 - cent deposit was placed on each drink sold. When the empty bottles were returned the 5 - . cent deposit was refunded. There were always some bottles dropped on the ground or left standing on an outside table and the kids would pick them up and return them to the concession stand for a nickel. Since soft drinks were only 5 cents, two bottles would get them a free soft drink. Sometimes the enterprising kids would pair up and carry a case around, pick up empty bottles, and return 24 bottles for a whole $1.20. Perhaps many a bottle was purposely thrown on the ground so that some starry - eyed youngster could enjoy himself.

Preparations for the dance began early in the day. Since there was no electric refrigeration, the beer and soft drinks had to be iced down early in the evening so they would be cold for the people who arrived early to refresh themselves before the dance started.

The ice and drinks had to be brought from Shiner, 8 miles away. By the time the dance started at 9 o'clock, the drink boxes had to be refilled so there would be cold beer and soft drinks available at intermission time. Ice cream salt was usually added to the ice to make it colder and chill the drinks faster. The workers were glad when their turn was over so that they would not have to place their hands into the icy - cold water to retrieve anymore

drinks. On hot evenings young mothers would bring their baby's milk bottle to be put into the cold water, until such time as she needed it for feeding her baby, then one of the workers would warm it up for her on the concession stand stove.

Lodge Vlastenec No. 45 was, as are many of our present day lodges, more than just an organization which sold insurance, it was a true fraternity, a real brotherhood. It fulfilled a purpose· and need for those early farmers, it was a place where they met to discuss all of the problems of the day and catch up on the latest news and current events. It was a place of fellowship, a place of entertainment. It was the center of that farming community.

Memories of the past are worth preserving when they bring back a few moments of joy and serve to remind us or the changes which have taken place over the years. Lodge No. 45 was not very different from many of the lodges still in existence today. The difference is that Vlastenec Lodge No. 45 served and fulfilled its purpose, while the lodges in existence today still have their purposes to fulfill, even though their roles have changed throughout the years. Perhaps this article will bring back memories of days past in your own lodge.

Lodge 47 Choral Club News Update Dear Members: On October 26th fourteen members met to sing some "old favorites" and the Christmas carols. After singing, we held a brief meeting and decided to visit and sing at Southland Villa Nursing Center on Tuesday, November 25th at 7 p.m. I hope many· will be able to go entertain these elderly citizens.

We voted to have our Christmas party early this year. We will eat at l p.m. on Sunday, November 30th.

Bring covered dishes and we will spread these for noon meal. We voted to bring the lady's or man 's gift in the amount of $5 and then have a drawing ťor a gift, as we usually do each year.

So the dates to remember are Tuesday, Novem ber 25th, entertain at Southland Villa Nursing Center at 7 p.m., and the .Christrnas party on Sunday, November 30th at 12:30 p.m. and eat at I p.m. covered dish meal and gift exchange later. Bring dominoes or cards!

Temple Museum Preserves History Of Czechs In Texas

By Mary Ann Kreps Waco Tribune - Herald Central Texas Editor TEMPLE -- The Dallas woman suddenly froze before a 1922 photograph of a man plowing a field by hand as she and her companions wandered the halls of Texas' only Czech museum.

The woman burst into tears, 'That's my daddy," she cried. "I don't even have that picture."

Museum Curator Otto Hanus, aware more than most of the value of preserving one's heritage, promptly made copies of the photo for the woman.

Preserving the heritage of Czechs, especially in Texas, is the goal of the Czech library, archives and museum, . located on the second floor of the SPJST building in downtown Temple.

The SPJST, which stands for Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu · Texas or Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas, primarily is a private fraternal insurance society.

The museum, established in 1971, contains more than 30,000 books, including 19,000 Czech language books, and more than 2,000 historical pieces, all well - displayed through a winding maze that takes one back to the earliest days of Texas. Books may be checked out of the library.

Among the museum's historical nuggets is a photograph of the first Czech child born in Texas -- Amelie (Horak) Sugarek, born in 1856; photos of SP JST members who have reached the age of 96, which entitles them to receive the cash value of their life insurance policies; Czech coins dating back to 627; a stamp collection representing 162 countries; a set of 1873 Czechoslovakian puppets that were brought to the United States in 1923; and a display of authentic Czech costumes.

A set of Bibles dating to the 15th Century, a pioneer kitchen, a. blacksmith shop, old farm implements and military displays from both world wars and Vietnam can be seen at the museum.

More unusual displays include a collection of 70,000 pencils from around the world and an 1880 "Magic Gambler" machine featuring a monkey - faced man rolling dice. The machine was used to determine who would pay for beer.

"Here 's my pride and joy," said Hanus, as he flipped on a light in a back room to reveal a replica of the first Czech home in Texas. The cabin originally was built in Nelsonville, about 65 miles northwest of Houston.

Hanus, now 87, built the replica log cabin himself at the age of 83, striving for authenticity of detail, down to a pot of beans cooking on the fire.

Czechoslovakian visitors to America who make up many of the 15,000 people visiting the museum annually are most fascinated by old photographs of Czechoslovakia and of the country's first president, Tomas G. Masaryk.

"He's like George Washington to them," he said.

Where does Hanus get all this stuff?

"To build a museum like this without money, you've got to be a good beggar," Hanus said. "And I'm a pretty good beggar."

Hanus spends a lot of time writing and rewriting pleas for donations and has traveled all over the country to pick up items.

Many things are donated to the museum by people from all over the country who see his ads in Vestnik, now published in Hillsboro.

Hanus, who retired from the hardware department of Cogdell's Store in Waco at 65, mounts and frames the hundreds of photographs on the museum walls and is continually tinkering with items he finds to display in the museum.

His current project is a wooden buggy dating back to 1895. "Can you believe that sold for $17.45 back then?" asked Hanus, who can recite the original price of many items in the museum.

Hanus said the museum has had visitors from every state in the U .S. and from 17 foreign countries.

The museum is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Arrangements for

Letters From The Youth Lodge 9 YC Holds Indoor Rodeo Dear Vestnik Readers, .The Snook SPJST Youth Club had an indoor rodeo with about 75 cowboys and cowgirls having loads of fun. We had all kinds of events such as pole bending and calf roping. The final event was the crowning of a rodeo queen.

Texas Czechs Souvenirs The American - Czech Culture Society is offering a selection of souvenirs commemorating the participation of Texans of Czech Ancestry in the 1986 Texas Sesquicentennial. The American Czech Culture Society, a non - profit organization composed of cultural and fraternal societies, has sponsored Czech Days at the State Fair of Texas since 1928. Numerous activities, including a symposium. and a Czechoslovak program in the Cotton Bowl stadium, were sponsored this year by the American - Czech Culture Society as a part of the· Texas Sesquicentennial. Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SP JST held its monthly meeting on November 2, 1986 at the Taiton Community Center.

President Marcy Dorotik called the meeting to order. Craig Dornak led the pledge and Kim Dornak recited a prayer. Secretary Jean Dorotik read the minutes and Treasurer Linda Treumer gave the treasurer's report.

Under old business we talked about going to Texas Fraternal Congress. We had lots of fun. We also discussed the cake walk we had at the Fall Festival.

We would like to thank all those who donated something to the cake walk.

We made $408.50 and we gave $58.50 to the Taiton Community Center (hall) which left us with $350.

For new business we discussed our Christmas party which will be on December 19th at the Taiton Community Center. We will have a meeting which will start at 5 p.m. We decided each mother would give their own child a gift. We also had volunteers for the Decorating Committee to decorate for the party.

We then played a game and our meeting adjourned and refreshments were served.

Our youth club meeting for November was held on November 9th at 2 p.m. , Tracy Breitkreutz called the· meeting to order. After the Pledge of Allegiance, Windy Whitley read the minutes of our last meeting and treasurer's report was given by Dawn Pavelka.

Old business was about selling tickets on a Honey Joe Bear. Junior Breitkreutz has donated a beautiful ceramic basket to also sell tickets on.

We would like to say thank you to Junior for this basket.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the officers and members of Lodge Pokrok Jihu No. 72, Cameron, extend our deepest heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our lodge brother RICHARD EARL WILUAMS, who passed away Saturday, September 27, 1986 at his home. He was 57 years of age.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 30th in Mare-k - Burns Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron with Rev. Keith Whitaker officiating.

Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Brother Williams was born on April 23, 1929 in Cameron, Texas. He was the president of First National Bank in Cameron. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Lodge Pokrok Jihu No. 72, Cameron since June 5, 1958.

Survivors include his widow, Mary Jacquelyn Williams of Cameron; , a son, Richard Earl Williams, Jr. of Cameron; a daughter, Debora Williams of Temple; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Williams of Cameron. He was preceded in death by a son.

Brother Machu was a crew leader of custodial services at the University of Texas, a World War II veteran, a member of the Granger American Legion Post 282, Granger SP JST Lodge No. 20, and a member of.St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. from the St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Lonnie Urban and Msgr.

George Tydlacka officiating. Military graveside rites were in Machu Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Delores Machu of Taylor; two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Arline) Miller of .- College Station and Mrs. Dennis (Patricia) Mikulencak of Taylor; a son and daughter - in - law, Johnny L. and .Marilyn Machu of Taylor; a sister, Mrs. Emilie Sralla of Georgetown and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on October 18th from the Nelsonville Brethren Church on Saturday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Albert Michalik officiating. Burial was in the National Cemetery near Nelsonville.

Pallbearers were his grandsons, Joe Briles, Daniel Merz, Bruce Mikeska, Barry Mikeska, Gary Mikeska and Elden Mikeska, Jr. Brother Mikeska was born on June 15, 1905 at Bleiblerville. He attended Victoria Public School near Bleiblerville.

He was a member of the Nelsonville Brethren Church and SP JST Lodge No. 33.

On January 7, 1925, he was married to Tillie Maresh at the Nelsonville Church. They lived and farmed near Bleiblerville until they moved to Houston and he worked for 30 years for the Mosher Steel Company until his retirement.

Survivors include a daughter, Loris Briles; two sons, Connie and Elden Mikeska of Bellville; two sisters, Mrs. Frances Task~ of Blessing and Lillie Schultz of Houston; one brother, Ladgie Mikeska of Houston; 13 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Tillie Mikeska, three sisters, four brothers, one granddaughter and one great granddaughter.

Funeral services were under the arrangement of Pete E. Etlinger Funeral Home, Bellville.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 15, Buckholts in behalf of our membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother FRANK H. SVETLIK, who passed away in a Temple hospital on Saturday, October 19, 1986 at the age of 92.

Brother Svetlik was born in Milam County, Texas on July 27, 1894. His parent's were the late John and Marie (Adamek) Svetlik.

He was a World War I veteran serving his Country overseas. He was also a member ofSPJST Lodge No. 15 since 1912, a member of San Andres Masonic Lodge No. 170 of Cameron, also a member of the Buckholts.

Brother Svetlik was a retired farmer/rancher . and, at one time, a cotton buyer.

Funeral services for Brother Svetlik were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, October 20th at the Marek - Burns - Laywell Funeral Home Chapel in Cameron, with Rev. Milton Maly officiating.

Burial was in the Hope Lutheran Memorial Park in Buckholts.

Survivors include a brother, Anton Svetlik of Buckholts, two sisters, Rosie Matyastik and Frances Vogelsang, both of Cameron.

Pallbearers were nephews, Ernest Fuchs, Elbert Svetlik, John Thomas Svetlik, Jim Matyastik , Edgar Harris and Richard Ruzicka.

The members of Lodge Volna Cechie No. 135, Ennis, Texas, express their sympathy to the family of ANNASTAZIE JURCIK, who passed away October 30, 1986, at the age of 73. Sister Jurcik was born 24 July 1913, in Ennis, the daughter of Charles and Frances Janek Elleven.

She was reared in Ennis and also attended school there.

On November 3, 1931, she was married to Charlie A. Jurcik of Ennis.

After their marriage they lived in the Creech ville community.

Sister Jurcik is survived by her husband, Brother Charlie A. Jurcik; one son, Charles L. Jurcik of Ennis; two daughters, Mrs. Harold Hamilton of Italy, Mrs. John Zajíc of Ennis; five brothers, Charlie Elleven of Ennis, Frank Elleven of Wilmer, Jerry Elleven of Pasadena, Joe Elleven of Salinas, California, Johnny Elleven of Gary, Indiana; two sisters, Bessie Laznovsky of Ennis, Frances Torres of Avalon; 14 grandchildren and 15 great - grandchildren.

A prayer vigil was held at Keever Chapel in Ennis on October 3.lst.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

November lst, in the Keever Chapel with Rev. Larry Pichard officiating with Brother George Prevratil of Dallas assisting. Interment was in Myrtle Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Stuart Hamilton, Mark Hamilton, Danny Jurcik, Tony Jurcik, Lewis Zajíc, Lee Hamilton and Robert Zajíc.

Honorary pallbearers included William Snodgrass, Buddy Whitley, Bill Rose, Mark Kelly, Ben Maca, Jerry Laznovsky and Larry Laznovsky.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Jaromir Lodge No. 54, West, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother FRANK J. HLA VATY, 91, of West, who passed away on October 31, 1986 at a local hospital.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. on November 2nd at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. on November 3rd at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption with Msgr.

George Doskocil as celebrant. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Brother Hlavaty was born 2 August 1895 in Fayetteville to Joseph and Johanna Hlavaty. He had lived in

West since 1901. He was a World War I veteran, serving in the United States Army and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption where he was an usher for many years.

He was also an owner and operator of a Mobile Service Station in West from 1934 until 1961.

Brother Hlavaty was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 54, the West Longhorn Club since 1940, American Legion No. 478, VFW Post No. 4819 and was a lst Lt. in -the Texas State Guard. He was a member of West Volunteer Fire Department from 1934 until 1974 where he was a former Fire Chief and City Fire Marshal. He was past president of Bold Springs Country Club and was instrumental in beautifying and maintaining the flower bed and grounds at West Rest Haven.

He was also an avid bee - keeper until 1985.

Brother Hlavaty was married to the former Esther Rydel, who survives him; also one brother, Eddie Hlavaty of West; two sisters, Millie Baca of West, Julie Mazanec of Waco; several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Henry Rydel, Bernard Hlavaty, Lawrence Hlavaty, Alfred Gerik, C.J. Hlavaty and Darren Bohannan.

Members of West Volunteer Fire Department and members of VFW No. 4819 and American Legion No. 478 served as Honorary Pallbearers.

Aderhold Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Resolution Committee: Maxine Sefcik Jan Vaculík -SPJST-

Features West Grads On Who's Who WACO -- Edwin (Bubba) Sefcik and Mary Louise Coleman, both Drafting and Design Technology students at Texas State Technical Institute (TSTI) in Waco, were recently named to Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges.

Edwin, the son of Rudy and Maxine Sefcik of West, is a 1984 West High School graduate and a fifth quarter student at TSTI. Mary, the daughter of Louise M. Bartosh of West, is also a 19.84 West High School graduate and a sixth quarter student at the school.

The two West grads were among 65 students from TSTI selected for the honor, joining an elite group of students selected from more than 1,400 institutions of higher learning in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign states.

(Sefcik and Coleman were outstanding band members of the West Junior High, West Senior High and West High School Polka Dots; they also participated with the Trojan Band/Polka Dots at the 1985 World's Fair in New Orleans. Edwin is a member of SP JST Lodge No. 54, West.)

Sixty-Fifth Anniversary Celebrants On Sunday, November 9th, Brother Joe and Sister Mary Barabas Jr. observed their 65th wedding anniversary.

The day began with a Mass of Thanksgiving by their beloved pastor Father Walter Matus of SS Cyril and Methodius Church of Granger.

We want to express our sincere thanks to Father Walter Matus and Rev. Msgr. George Tydlacka (former pastor of SS Cyril & Methodius

Church of Granger) for his sincere talk to us at the Mass and to the Bishop of the Austin Diocese for the nice Sacrament of Matrimony Certificate for our 65th anniversary.

We also would like to thank the Senior Choir of SS Cyril & Methodius Church for the beautiful songs that they rendered during the ceremony.

To our many friends and relatives who were present at our Mass and reception and for the well wishers, we will be forever grateful.

The Barabases were married on November 8, 1921 at SS Cyril & Methodius Church in Granger by the late pastor Father Francis Pridal.

They have one daughter, Mrs. Joe Fronek of Holland, Texas. (Another

daughter, Doris Marie passed away at the age of 2 liz years); three grandchildren, Connie Gooden of Houston, Joe Edward Fronek of Austin; and one great - grandchild, Stephanie Sladornik of Austin. ~tary and Joe are still living on their farm, 7 miles northeast of Bartlett. in the Pecan comniunity, where they haYe liwd since their marriage and where Joe has spent 75 years of his life on this farm.

She was a JV Cheerleader during her Sophomore year in high school. She has served on the Student Council for 4 years as the president of her Freshmen and Sophomore classes, Junior Class Representative and currently the Student Council Secretary.

Lisa was voted as the Sophomore of the Year. During the past 2 years, she has served on the Student Foundation Board.

She was also elected to the National Honor Society last year and is currently their Historian. Her college plans have not yet been confirmed but her future would include a career where she would be working to help others.

Lisa, we are proud of you at Lodge 84; keep up the great work.

-SPJSTThis article mainly concerns Annie Mae Hejl who recently was awarded a plaque from her employer for her 25 year dedicated services as LVN in the Operating Room at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas. She doesn't only excel. dedication among the confined individuals, she is also known to be a very devoted SPJST Lodge 47 member with her husband, Gene at "Seaton Star Hall," who are presently cleanup chairpersons and who keep the facilities nice, clean and very much in order. They have also worked in the kitchen for a month at a time, plus worked for other chairpersons in the kitchen/bar areas.

They are always there on workday, cleanup day, and other functions.

The "Spotlight On Caring" is only fitting for Sister Hejl who takes care of many persons in her profession as well lodge sisters and friends.

Her husband Gene also is employed at Scott & White Hospital.

Golden Anniversary Honorees· Mr. and Mrs. Casper Balke of Bleiblerville celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house Sunday afternoon, October 12, 1986 at the Bleiblerville SP JST Hall.

Their children and grandchildren helped with the reception; namely, Mr. and Mrs. Byron Balke of Bleiblerville, Mr. and Mrs. James Balke of Waco; Marian Balke (daughter) of Bleiblerville; Virgil and Lee Ann Balke of Bellville, Phyliss Balke of Houston, Kelly and Susan Balke of Waco (grandchildren).

Nieces and nephews were in the houseparty,

Herbert Catering Service served the food. Mrs. Jo Ann Schovajsa did the decorations and arrangements.

Mr. and Mrs. Balke have operated a general mercantile business all of their married life in Bleiblerville. Mrs. Balke served as postmaster of Bleiblerville, Texas.

Guests included relatives and friends from Bleiblerville and out - of - town.

Lisa Reznik On October 1 Oth, Lisa Reznik was crowned Homecoming Queen of Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas.

Lisa is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Reznik of Lodge 84, Dallas and our 1985 - 86 SP JST State Queen.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Siptak of Caldwell, Texas [holding the plaque] received an award for being the longest married couple [58 years] present. Mr. Siptak was also honored as King For The Day for being the oldest gentleman [81] attending and received a trophy. Czech Day President Stan Patak [right] made all the presentations while Mildred Chervenka [left] and Anne Zvolanek assisted at the Band Shell activities held in Dallas.

Most people deal with daily stresses like traffic jams and work deadlines without too much trouble. But even people who are on a fairly even keel most of the time face occasional periods of great stress.

Bereavement, financial difficulties, íll - health, and worry are all part of life. According to the Texas Medical Association, it is when several such events occur together that. mental health can suffer.

Since you cannot always avoid stress, learning to deal with it effectively helps ease tension that can build up. There are many ways to relax. Often the problem seems to center around finding the time to "get away from it all." The following exercise routine does not take very much time and can be done on your own without going anywhere.

Try to do the exercises regularly, not just when you feel tense. A gradually acquired ability to relax may help you deal with occasional periods of great and unavoidable stress. l) Loosen or remove any tight clothing. Lie on the floor, face up, eyes closed, either in a warm room or covered with a light blanket.

2) Tighten the muscles in your face and then let them relax.

1) ·Lift up your head and let it fall gently back. Keep your jaws and neck relaxed so that you can feel your throat opening.

4) Press your shoulders down onto the floor. Then relax them.

5) Stretch out your arms and fingers.

Hold them taut for only a moment before easing the strain completely.

6) Lift your buttocks and let them fall again, feeling your spine stretch and relax as you do so.

7) Keeping your heels together, stretch your legs and toes. Then relax them completely.

Continue these exercises, one after the other, for a few minutes until you feel totally limp and relaxedfrom head to toe. Rest with your eyes open or closed. Before standing up, turn and lean on your side for another two or three minutes. Repeat this routine every day.

Rodiče té židovské rodiny již řádu Pokroku se těší na vaši návštěvu, kterou podpoříte naše české národní zesnuli, ale děti a bratranec jejich se dědictví zde v Texasu. Čistý výtěžek sešli s Macogowskimové členy a sice tohoto programu "Obzvláště pro vás" těmi dvěma z Polska. Jistě je to historka zajímavá Anežka Hvudková o lidech kteří měli zlaté srdce tehdy v Tak už máme po těch volbách 1942.

Také ze západního Německa vyšla texaského guvernéra a mínění je všeli­ jaké. Někteří bylí pro Clementsa, zpráva že nejstarší bratr bývalého který vyhrál ale též mnoho jich bylo presidenta John F. Kennedyho byl pro Whitea veřejně se vyslovili proti střelen a zabit v Druhé světové válce.

Ten pes byl obrovsky a vážil prý 100 liber. Ten větší hoch skočil mezi menším hochem a tím psem a odehnal ho, jenže pes se vrátil a napadl toho většího a velice jej pokousal šestkráte na ramene a ruce a musel byt vzat do nemocnice na ošetření. Lidé ho mají rádi a je u nich hrdinou!

Teď myslím zase bude to vše napjaté když mnoho těch evropských zemí se konečně jaksi přidali k tomu; aby se Syrii přerušili styky a povolali své kon­ sulové pryč domů. Ovšem, Arabové jsou při sobě a nemíní ustoupit a asi se budou mstít těm kteří nejsou s nimi.

Tak se zdá, že války budou nadále ve všech částích světa a nikam to nepovede. lran také je proti USA a Khomeini řekl, že války nepřestanou i kdyby on zemřel. On totiž není v dobrem zdraví a už není mladý a kdožví co by se pak stalo, když by on byl mrtev.

Dnes je úterý a je velice chladno a včera nám zde hodně pršelo a při tom bylo chladno velice, takže to bylo ošklivé pro každého kdo musel býti venku. Má prý přijít ještě větší zima ve středu v Montáně a Severní Dakotě.

Náš president opravdu se snaží obstarat propuštění těch zajatců v Lebanonu, kterých je celkem ještě šest.

Dosud ale neměl žádné výsledky ač každy by byl velice rád kdyby i tito byli vysvobození, neboť už jsou zajatí dost dlouho a rodiny jejich jsou nyní v důvěře, že i oni přijdou domů, když ten Jacobsen byl puštěn odtud. Snad se to konečně podaří. Doufáme!

Bylo oznámeno, že poprvně za 5 měsíců se ukázalo, že bylo méně ma­ jetků kde byly vzaté za dluhy a to bylo v listopadové dražbě. Ti kteří půjčili peníze na majetky, tak převzali 475 kusů za dluhy. V září jich bylo 600, a říjnu bylo 50 procent vydražených a ještě je finanční situace velmi vážná. Říkají, že možná, že v příštích dnech bude to ještě horší nebo majetky jsou velmi zadlužené a někdy se neví kudy kam.

Náš Dallas začíná míti stále více lidí z cizích zemí, kteří investují peníze a usazují se zde též. Nyní Japonsko a Čína se zajímají o obchod v Dallasu a též těch cizích jídelen je stále více.

Naproti tomu, známá firma McDonald's prý míní postavit jídelny v Yugoslavii a Maďarsku a tak zase naše produkty se šíří po Evropě. Co vše se časem nestane, že? · V Austin, Minnesota dělníci ob­ chodu Hormel's, kteří balí masové produkty a šli na stávku už více jak před rokem, a jsou nezaměstnaní, tak budou míti benefitní koncert 20. listopadu aby se získaly peníze které budou upotřebeny ke koupí jídla které oni potřebují.

Tamních 30 dětí těch nezaměstnaných dělníků obklopily toho zpěváka který se tak laskavě nabídl to učinit. Asi 1500 dělníků šlo na tu stávku v srpnu 1985 a továrna se zavřela. Později se otevřela s jinými dělníky. Snad konečně se to vyřídi dobře.

Minulý týden se sešel minister ruský Eduard Shevardnadze s naším sekretářem naší země Jiřím Schultzem, ale nijak se nepohodli ve Vídni kde dlouho o tom rokovali jak to dokončit ku spokojenosti obou stran. Jestli prý se nedohodnou do I .ledna tak prý bude povšem, Prý Amerika nechce slíbit to o čem se jednalo už v Icelandu.

Tak kdožví jak to bude? Tak nám oz­ namovali, že automobílka GM míní zavříti celkem osm továren -- totiž v Pontiac a Flint, Michiganu, v Nor­ wood, Ohio, též v Hamilton, Ohio, v St. Louis, Missouri, Willow Springs, Illinois a to bude pry 27 tisíc dělníků bez práce. Prý ty cizí firmy jim moc kazí obchody a dělníci jsou moc rozhorčení. Jeden řekl, že už tam pracuje 30 let a teď ná stáří, že nemá práci. Bude to asi velice zlé, Někdo -nyslí, že Amerika by měla zakázat cizí urta sem do naší země. Jak bude dál?

Také vláda pokutovala továrnu Chrysler jelikož neoznámila pravdivě kolik dělníků bylo poraněno při práci.

Tedy budou muset zaplatit pry 910 tisíc dolarů za to. Prý se vynašlo. že asi 182 dělníků bylo poraněno mezi lednem 1985 a dubnem 1986. Jeden člověk také byl rozmačkán k smrti a pak inspektoři začali býti více ostražitější, neb měli podezření, že vše není v pořádku. Tak se jim to nevyplatilo to skrývat, že ano?

Dallaská konvenční společnost chtěla by, aby více lidí drželo své schůze a konvence zde v našem městě, a tak zahájila kampaň, aby město mělo mnohem více peněz, když přijedou delegáti různých spolků, a jiné ob­ chody utrží též více známostí-­ obzvláště z jiných částí naší země a též odjinud. Prý mnozí lidé ani moc neví, že Dallas je velké město a potřebuje obchod.

Bylo nám oznámeno, že zrovna hned nám zvýší poplatek na plyn, totiž o 4 procenta více. Zdá se, že už platíme teď dost, a ještě chtějí více. Co budou dělat ti starší kteří mají menší pensi, když vše je tak drahé?

Však všude kde člověk jde, tak zboží je všechno mnohem dražší než dříve.

Ten zločinec Gadhafi z Libye oznámil, že USA a Anglie jsou vinní, že tak chtěli obvinit Libii a Syrii, že oni byli zapletení v tom bombování a terorizování a řekli, že oni se pomstí dvakrát za každé jedno ublížení jim.

Prý tolik lidí podporovali Gadhafího za to co Amerika udělala v dubnu když velice bombovala jeho zem. Tak každý bude muset být na stráži aby on něco špatného nevyvedl nám. On je schopen všeho a nic mu není líto když zabije nevinné lidi pro nic a za nic!

Napadlo hodně sněhu-- prý 25 coulů a několik hor ců kteří byli v horách tak se pohřešují a též ve Wyomingu hodně lidí bylo poraněno a někteří zemřeli v té bouři. Tak pořád se něco stává někde a je to špatné.

navštívil svého otce který je 92 letý a velice byl šťasten, že se setkal se synem po tak dlouhé době. Ještě ale jsou tam několik zajatých a dosud se neví, kdy ti budou osvobození, na které čekají je­ jich rodiny.

Josef Jaroslav Langer (1806-1846)

-Dvojí výročíDnešní článek je zepsán k eulogii vlasteneckého básníka a spisovatele Josefa Jaroslava Langra, jak příležitosti výročí jeho letoších listopadových narozenin před 180 lety, tak i k vzpomíncejeho úmrtí v dubnu před 140 roky. Josef Jaroslav Langer se narodil 12.listopadu 1806 v Bohdančiu Pardubic v Čechéch. Tento městýs, často též zvaný Bohdaneč u Přelouče, byl již v XIV století předem plánovanou a dle plánů pak postavenou osadou, což dodnes ukazu­ je pravidelnost původních ulic a celkový ráz tohoto historického městečka. Langrovo rodiště leží v polabské krajině, která v těchto místechbývala proslulá svýmirybníky.

Městečko patřilo ve svých ranních dějinách k hradu Blatníku, později ma­ jitel obce byl proslulý Opatovský klášter a pak byl to hrad Kunětická Hora, na hoře stejného jména. Kterýsi z majitelů Bohdanče postavil za osadou nalevo od tak zvané pardubické silnice tvrz. Po bývalých pardubických pánech z Miletínka zdědilo městečko Bohdaneč svůj nynější znak šachovnici s žebříkem, rozšířený asi 15 let po skončení 30 letě války, během vlády Leopolda I (1657-1705), andělem stojícím za šachovnicí(vidětje horní čast jeho těla od pasu nahoru) s rozpjatými křídly, držícímnad hlavou velikou královskou korunu jež přechází v čast hrudi, krku a hlavy korunovaného supa malou zlatou korunkou. Nad velkou korunou, .na supově trupu, je velké zlaté písmeno "L", jež zřejmě připomíná zmíněného již habsburského panovníka Leopolda I. Předtím za panování Jagellovců Bohdanečtí obdrželi od krále Vladislava II (1471-1516)v roce 1491 právo na výroční trh, a o jedenáct let později, v roce 1512 bylo králem městečku schváleno vybírání mýta.

Obě práva pro Bohdaneč zařídil par-

dubický pán Vilém II z Pernštejna, dvorní kancléř českého království, od něhož pak Bohdaneč koupil ves Jilovku. - Vilém II z Pernštejna byl majitelem celé řady panství, především na Moravě, kde se v "Zubří zemi" na CeskomoravskéVysočiněnachází hrad Pernštejn, který je často nazýván králem moravských hradů. Nejvyšší kancléř českého království Vilém II z Pernštejna koupil též 22.dubna 1475 hrad a město Přerov. Viz obšírný soupis vlády příslušníků pernštejnského rodu v tomto městě, spolu s pověstí o vzniku tohoto rodu a popisem Pernštejny vylepšenéhoznaku města Přerova v mém třídílném článku "K SO.výročíStředomoravské výstavy v Přerově v SPJST Věstníku v létě 1986.-Od Vilémovavnuka Jaroslava z Pernštejna dostali Bohdanečtí v roce 1554 okolní lesní pozemky, od habsburského Ferdinanda I (1526-1564) městečko získalo právo třetího výročního trhu a od krále Max­ miliána II (1564-1576)obdrželo roku 1574 les Lužec. Roku 1772 takřka celé městečko vyhořelo. V roce 1880 bohdaneč měl 160 domů a 1846 obyvatelů.

Mimo Bohdanče u Pardubic, který je rodištěm Josefa J. Langra, existuje též Bohdaneč u Ledče nad Sázavou.

Tento Bohdaneč, o němžjsou záznamy již v jedenáctém století, měl do 30 leté války obšírnou historii. Ke konci zmíněné války zdejší tvrz a městečko byly bohužel vypáleny a od té doby tento Bohdaneč zůstal pouze vesnicí.

Dřívější slavnější dobu dokazuje starobylý chrám Zvěstování Panny Marie s mnoha náhrobky rodu Bohdaneckých z Hodkova a panů Robmhápů ze Suché.

Do třetice všeho dobrého; dle Ottova náučného slovníku z roku 1890 v he­ jtmanství a okresu královéhradeckém se nachází vesnice Bohdaneč s 390 obyvateli v 35 domech.

Langrův otec byl městským důchodním a rodina měla v městečku též hospodářství. Po základním vzdělání v rodném městě rodiče dali Josefa Jaroslava studovat v Hradci Králové, kde zvláště zásluhou Václava KlimentaKlicpery(1792-1859)a Josefa Chmely (1793-1847) se v tuto dobu rozvíjel čilý kulturní národní život.

Gymnasijní profesor Klicpera s Chmelou a dalšími buditeli vytvořil tu ochotnické divadlo a literarně kulturní

středisko, v němž vyrůstala řada nových mladých pracovníků. V tomto středisku i v divadles velkýmnadšením působil Josef J. Langer během svých středoškolských studií. Po maturitě magna cum laude odešel na filosofickou fakultu do Prahy. Tu na filosofii (do roku 1828) a při studiu práv se Langer věnoval literatuře, pro­ to také práva přerušil a od roku 1830 žil střídavě v rodišti a v Praze jako soukromý učitel a redaktor. Koncem roku 1831 se na přímluvu Františka Palackého stal archivářem u knížete Kinského. V tu dobu Langer přispíval také svými básněmi do různých časopisů (Jindy a nyní, květy, Časopis Českého muzea a jinde). Josef Jaroslav Langer někdy používal k svému psaní pseudonym Kopřivarius. V Čechoslavu tehdy vyšlajeho báseň České lesy, sym­ patizující s polským povstáním, jíž Langer se stal politicky podezřelýa byl pak sledován rakouskou policií. V Praze udržoval přátelské styky s bývalými kolegy z hradeckých středoškolských studií (na příklad s Josefem Kajetánem Tylem, 1808-1856, tvůrcem české národní hymny, výz­ namným prozaikem a zakladatelem moderního českého divadla) a dalšími obrozeneckými pracovníky. J .J. Langer byl však stále nespokojen s celkovými výsledky své tvorby a se svým osobním životem; na naléhání otce, aby se ujal rodinného hospodářství se nakonec přemluven vrátil v roce 1832 do rodného Bohdanče. Maloměstské tak zvané šosácké prostředí nejen mu nevyhovovaloale i duševnějej ubíjelo, doma se cítil "jako v hrobě". V tuto dobu též prakticky skončila celá jeho dřív tak nadějná literární činnost.

Josef Jaroslav Langer zemřel v mladém věku pouhých čtyřiceti let dne 28.dubna 1846 ve svém rodišti. Tento básník, spisovatel a vlastenecký nadšenec je z velmi mála lidí, natož umělců či literátů, kteří se narodili a zemřeli ve svých rodištích, neřku-li v rodných domech. (Toto štěstí není dopřáno takřka nikomu z nás.) Jelikož J.J. Langer s oblibou používal svého druhého křestního jména Jaroslav, tak není bez zajímavosti, že zemřel den po těchto jmeninách 28.dubna 1846. Svátek jmenin Jaroslava je totiž jak v českém tak ve slovenském kalendáři 27.dubna.

i v mnoha jiných evropských zemích daleko víc oslavovány než svátek narozenin.) - Josef Jaroslav Langer podobně jako František Ladislav Celakovský (1799-1852) vycházel ve své básnické tvorbě z českéa slovenské lidové prózy a poesie. (F.L. Čelakovský se stejně jako J .J. Langer zastával polských povstalců a rovněž pak pracoval u knížete Rudolfa Kinskéhojako knihovník.) J .J. Langer vydal v roce 1830 sbírku epickýchbásní zvanou Selanky, ve které čerpal látku z českých pohádek a pověstí. V této sbírce je i nejvýznamější Langrova báseň Devatero krkavců. V té době též vyšly v Časopisu Českého muzea jeho Ceské krakováčky lehceprocítěné lyrické básně, tu a tam elegické, odrážející jeho básnické citové vzplanutí. Některé jeho verše mu zhudebnil přítel a krajan František Škroup, spolupracovník J.K. Tyla.

Deset Langrových alegorických satir a bajek vyšlo v letech 1829 až 31 v Časopisu Českého muzea. Langer se v těchto dílechdotýká kriticky ale jinota­ jně (alegoricky)jak některých událostí z české historie tak ze své součastnosti, Šedesátiveršová satira Bohdanecký rukopis je zajímavá tím, že paroduje RKZ (Rukopis královédvorský a zelenohorský),o jejichžpravosti Langer nepochyboval; kritizuje zde některé nedostatky tehdejšího měšťanského života. (Rukopis královéhradecký "objevil" v roce 1817 Václav Hanka.)

Další Langrova satira v próze Den v Kocourkově (1832), stírá - i když ne příliš ostře - společenské, národní i literární slabosti tehdejší doby. Snad nejlepší z Langrových prací je cyklus Hraběnce na památku (v Časopisu Českého muzea 1844), typ romantické subjektivní poesie, velmi vzácné ve staré vlasti. Ke konci svého života Josef Jaroslav Langer věnoval některé ze svých článků vytištěných v Musejníku české a slovenské lidové tvorbě; z těchto spisů byl to na příklad článek nazvaný Ceské prostonárodní obyčeje a písně nebo Úvod k překladům - Starožitné básně ruské.

J.J. Langer i přes svůj krátký život se řadí svou literární tvorbou a svým vlastenectvím k významným osob­ nostem staré vlasti v první polovině minulého století. Lidí Langrova typu je nám tu v Texasu potřebí k probuzení z letargie k osudu naší krajanské větve.
