Many taxpayers are considering making major buys before year - end to take advantage one last time of the sales - tax deduction. The new tax law ends that deduction after 1986. To buy this year makes the most sense if you are among the 38 percent of taxpayers who itemize deductions on Federal Tax returns. Here are the tax savings that you can expect, assuming you are in the 38 percent bracket and the sales tax is 6 percent: Stereo System -- Cost: $1500, Sales Tax - $90, Tax Saving - $34 Computer, Printer -- Cost: $2500, Sales Tax - $150, Tax Saving - $57 Furniture, Carpeting -- Cost: $5000, Sales Tax - $300, Tax Saving - $114 If you are planning a more modest purchase, such as a $400 videocassette recorder, you may as well wait for a better price during the post - Christmas sales. In addition, plan on paying in cash. Going into debt to make such a purchase is a false economy, since the deduction for consumer interest is being phased out -- even for existing debts -- beginning in 1987. *** Heavy doors pose the greatest obstacle in public places for people with arthritis, according to a recent Arthritis Foundation survey. About 170 people with arthritis were asked to identify the barriers which make it most difficult for them to go out in public. Ninety - two percent of the people surveyed said heavy doors pose a problem. Other common barriers were stairs or curbs (73 percent), round door knobs (62 percent) and faucets and other washroom fixtures (57 percent).

The respondents were also asked to identify the barriers they encountered in their own homes. Again, round door knobs and heavy doors were identified as a problem, second only to stairs or curbs. However, the percentage of people citing barriers in the home was much smaller than those who identified problems in public places. One reason for this is that many people have made changes in their homes to accommodate their conditions. Sixty - nine percent of the respondents said that they have either made some type of modification to their home, or that they use self - help aids to assist them around the house.

Transportation poses a smaller, though still substantial, problem for people with arthritis. Forty - six percent of those questioned said arthritis has affected their ability to drive an automobile, and 50 percent said that accessibility to various modes of public transportation is a problem.

A large percentage of the respondents said various extra automobile options, such as power steering, power seats and cruise control, have allowed them to continue driving.

The survey was conducted by the Arthritis Foundation as a part of the Arthritis Advisory Network. The network is made up of people with arthritis throughout the country who periodically share their experiences and insights about living with arthritis.

The Foundation uses the information to plan programs and information campaigns, and to strengthen advocacy activities on behalf of all Americans with arthritis.

It may seem flattering when a friend or relative asks you to be the executor of his or her estate, but the task involves heavy responsibilities. To minimize complications, sit down with this person as soon as possible and ask: Where is the will? Two thirds of all Americans die without one. Is it the most recent version? Where are the life -insurance policies kept? Are burial or cremation instructions in writing? Are funeral costs adequately covered?

What properties does the person own?

What liabilities will he or she leave?

Should you actually become executor, don't pay the deceased's bills out of your own pocket. Those should be covered by the estate. *** Travelers who become ill while on airplanes now have a better chance of getting emergency treatment from plane crews or fellow passengers with medical training. A new Federal Aviation Administration regulation requires domestic airliners carrying 30 passengers or more to pack a sophisticated medical kit, including stethoscope, syringes, injections for diabetic and allergic reactions, blood pressure equipment, nitroglycerin pills for angina and tubes for opening a patient's air passages. Kits previously carried on airliners contained little more than bandages and ammonia.

Gebala Elected N.F.C. Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernard Gebala, of SPJST Society, Temple, Texas, was elected Past President of the Fraternal Section of the National Fraternal Congress of America during a meeting held in Washington, D.C. He is shown with

the other officers of the Section.

President Ronald Reagan was a featured speaker at the meeting. He asked the fraternalists to join him in the battle against drug abuse and praised them for their volunteer efforts on helping Americans help each other.

Czechoslovak Agriculturists Visit Supreme Lodge Czech agriculturists, Jaroslav - acre collective farm, southeast of

Urban, Marie Cerny and Karel Picka paid the Supreme Lodge a visit while on their tour of Central Texas and its farming communities.

Mr. Urban is the director of a 10,000

Prague; Marie Cerny is in charge of the poultry division, while her brother, Karel Picka, is director of cattle breeding.

Lodge 135 Donates $2,000 To Charity A check for $2,000 from Ennis Lodge 135 was presented to the Texas Department of Human Services.

For the fourth consecutive year, the lodge raised money to benefit abused children in Ellis County.

For three months Adell Valek and Evelyn Novotny raise money by selling

project tickets and serving food at Friday night Bingo, also by business and personal donations.

Uncorrected Minutes Of District VI Fall Meeting September 28, 1986 The fall meeting of District VI SPJST was held at the American Legion Hall in East Bernard on September 28, 1986 with Lodge 28, East Bernard as hosts. The meeting was called to order by District 1st Vice President Albert Olsovsky at 1:15 p.m.

Flag Bearer Darren Dybala presented the colors and led everyone in the pledge to the flag.

Second Vice President Katherine Wokaty read a list of deceased members in our district, followed by a moment of silence.

District Youth Counselor Janet Marek presented a short program.

Lodge 40 El Campo - Hillje gave a skit. Lodge 30 Taiton had the junior group state talent winners give their tap dance. Taiton also had their senior group state talent winners do their dance.

Second Vice President Wokaty introduced the following guests: SL Secretary -/Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and his wife, Dorothy; District VI Director Matt Vanek, and District V Rest Homes Director Louis Hanus.

Roll call of officers showed all officers present with the exception of President Ardis Bacak. All members of the standing committees, except Director Matt Vanek and Substitute Finance Committee member Albert Olsovsky, were absent. Eight lodges responded to the roll call of lodges.

Minutes were read and approved as corrected.

District VI Treasurer Anton Kellner Jr. reported there was a balance of $509.79 as of March 1st in the District VI Youth Fund. Income was $1,997.45, expenses totaled $2,226.87 leaving a balance September 1st of $280.34. In the General Expense Fund, there was a balance of $555.54 as of March 1st. Income was $550.00, expenses were $235.00 leaving a balance on September 1st of $870.54.

District VI Director Matt Vanek gave his report. Anyone wishing to check out the immigration film should contact him. Insurance sales last year were $1 1A million in District VI. So far this year, in District VI, $6,474,000 worth of insurance has been sold. new sales There were four representatives. Two sales representatives, Jerome Hlavaty and Frankie Vanek, have sold over $1 million worth of insurance in 1986. In the top 30 Sales Contest, four are from District VI -- Jerome Hlavaty, Melvin Marek, Annimae Merta and Frankie Vanek. Director Vanek said the Home Office would share, on a 50 - 50 basis with sales representatives, to help pay for advertising. Loans were available at 101/4 percent interest for 10 years, 101/2 percent for 11 to 15 years and 10 3/4 percent for 16 to 20 years for amounts up to $100,000. Universal Life was at 10 percent interest and IRAs' were at 8.75 percent.

The direct billing plan was progressing.

Director Vanek

concluded with words of praise for Secretary/Treasurer Mikeska.

Secretary/Treasurer Leonard Mikeska said that this was a very good year for the SPJST. There were the usual problems but there were record sales. Projected figures show that in 5 years, the SPJST will have $656 million worth of insurance in force.

Assets were growing with $451/2 million at the present time and projections show that there will be $100 million in 5 years. Insurance companies must grow and have new members. The annunity program was doing well because it is a sound investment. Secretary/Treasurer Mikeska said there were very good reports on mortgage loans with no foreclosures this year. He concluded by saying the SPJST is not only a good financial institution but also provides a valuable service of fraternalism. He urged all members to get involved in corrimunity affairs.

District V Rest Homes Director Louis Han us spoke a few words, telling a story about Director Vanek.

There was no old business.

Under new business, District Youth Counselor Janet Marek read her letter of resignation, effective immediately.

Joe Nezval made a motion to accept Youth Counselor Marek's resignation with a compliment on a job well done.

Anton Kellner seconded it and the motion passed. Joe Nezval then moved that Assistant Youth Counselor Anita Roye be nominated to fill the office.

There was a second by Katherine Wokaty and the motion passed. The new District Youth Counselor Anita Roye then thanked everyone and complimented Janet Marek. Lodge 30 Taiton Youth Club presented a plant to Mrs. Marek.

Also under new business a discussion on proper care of the flag and who should be responsible for its keeping between district meetings.

Anton Kellner made a motion that the flag bearer and the president of his home lodge be responsible for the care of the flag and the district banner. He also suggested that the flag bearers become familiar with the proper way to present the flag. Katherine Wokaty seconded it and the motion carried.

Appointed to the Nominating Committee were Joe Nezval, Eddie Vrana and Georgia Henderson.

There was some discussion on having only one district meeting a year. Director Vanek said at one time there were plans to have the fall meeting a social meeting but this was no longer the case. He added that Districts I and IV have only one meeting. Joe Nezval made a motion that District VI have only the spring meeting for business and decide at that meeting if it would be necessary to have the fall meeting. Georgia Dorotik seconded it and motion carried.

Lodge 32 Victoria will host the spring meeting with Lodges 97 Placedo and 143 Inez assisting.

Katherine Wokaty invited everyone to the Czech Heritage Festival in Victoria on October 19th and the Taroky Tournament.

The meeting was adjourned.

4 To Hold Election Of Officers Lodge

Dear Members: Our lodge held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, October 12, 1986 at the Grant Building in Hallettsville with Lodge President Annie Vahalik

presiding. Pledge to the U.S. flag was recited.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the July and August meetings which were approved. Correspondence followed.

Co - Youth Leader Gaynell Chudej reported that, at the next meeting, a birthday cake will be given to someone with a birthday in October, November or December.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave her usual report followed by the financial report from Family Day. Other favorable reports were given on Family Day and everyone thanked who helped in any way to its success.

Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka gave his report.

President Vahalik reminded the members that election of officers for 1987 will be held at the next meeting in November. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

The meeting adjourned with refreshments and lunch being served.

Door prize winner was Marvin McCray, guest of Gary Chudej.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, November 9th at the Grant Building beginning at 2 p.m. Election of officers for the coming year will be held. Birthdays in October, November and December will be honored and birthday cake given. Refreshments and lunch will be served as usual. Members are encouraged to attend.

15 Votes To Sell Land

Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting was called to order by President Joe Zajicek. We stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

Our visitors were Lillie Zajicek, Thomas Harwell and Marvin Williams.

It was voted on to sell some land to Milam County Precinct I for a road to be built.

Our next meeting will be on November 12th.

29 To Elect Officers

Lodge

Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29 held their regular monthly meeting on Sunday, October 12, 1986 at 4 p.m. with President Edwin Adamek presiding at the meeting.

Tammy Machu and Nikki Rieger, representing the youth club, presented the flag and led our members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a minute of silence for our deceased Brother Tony Malish.

Roll call of officers showed all present. Secretary Mike Kaiser read the minutes and they were approved as read.

Treasurer's report was given by Albin Machu and the Property report was given by Bobby Wuensche. Sister Edith Shiller gave an Audit report for July, August and September.

New members enrolled in our lodge are Matthew Henry Parsens, Todd Glenn Parsens, Shirley Diane Julian, John William Julian and Joshua Kyle Julian. We had one transfer to Lodge 48, namely, David Lee Tegge.

Assistant Youth Leader Donna Pasemann reported that there were 34 members and 11 adults present at the meeting and 2 new members joined; 46 youngsters went to Six Flags; for their social, they will have a "lock - in" on Friday, October 17th; for a money making project, they are selling vanilla and figurines.

A letter from the 4 H Club was received thanking the lodge for letting them use the lod ge facilities for their banquet.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, November 9th. We will have election of officers and we ask all members to be present at this meeting. See you then.

29 Sets Taroky Game Dates

Lodge

The SPJST Lodge No. 29 at Taylor will have a taroky night on the second Saturday of each month (November February). The dates are: November 8th December 13th January 10th February 14th The playing time will be from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., with an entry fee of $1 and the top four players (each) will get a six - pack of their choice of beverage.

The games will be open play (player's choice to play with friends).

We will also have classes those same nights on how to play taroky. The public is invited. Friends, members and anyone who is interested in watching, playing or learning the game are welcome.

News

President Franklin Elles presided over the September and October meetings. In September, it was decided that the December meeting and Christmas party would be held on December 3rd at the Victoria Community Center Annex. The meeting will be at 6 p.m. and we will eat at 6:30 p.m. The party will be chaired by Mike and Kathy Ahlstrom.

It was voted on to have Richard Korcyznski make the reproduction of the original Charter.

Refreshments for September were furnished by Sylvia Kocian and Sandra Schmidt .

In October, James Allen Whitfield Jr. (II), was accepted as a new member.

SL President Howard Leshikar sent a letter commending the lodge on its CEFT donation.

A discussion was held on the need for an active youth leader.

The lodge made a small profit from the Victoria Fest. Twenty - two members worked in the booth.

Victoria, Inez, Placedo and LaSalle will host the District VI spring meeting. The time and place will be announced at a later date.

The 1987 Czech Fest is already in its planning stage. At this time eight booth chairmen have been selected.

Frank Rokyta was appointed Nominating Committee chairman.

Wednesday, November 5, 1986---VESTNiK/5 The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society held its second Czech Heritage Festival on October 19th and the following Lodge No. 32 members were winners in the making contest: Anna Gleinser, first place for fruit kolache and first place for Buchta; Vlasta Svoboda, second prize for fruit kolache; Katherine Wokaty, first place for poppyseed cake; Kathy Ahlstrom, first prize for prune cake; Ella Arnold, second prize for pound cake; Lois Elles, second prize for bread and third prize for Vanocka; Jarmilla Obermiller, first prize for white bread.

84 Monthly Meeting

Dear Members: Brother Olson led the group in the pledge to our flag.

Minutes of our last meeting were read by Secretary Salac.

Correspondence consisted of Dallas Ennis Fraternal Council pertaining to the meeting to be held this Wednesday (WOW host), and a letter from U.S. Post Office concerning bulk mail.

Entertainment report was given by Sister Cheri Petr.

Softball Report -- Brother Jarma reported on a fishing trip which all enjoyed, even caught a little one (fish).

Decorating Report -- Sister Olson reminded all of us about the Tuesday, October 28th "vinobrani" decoration, also November 30th at 2 p.m. to decorate for Christmas. Bring a covered dish to be used after decorating is complete.

House Committee -- Brother Salac reported that he and Brother Schultz worked on electrical wiring on outside of the building -- preparing for awning to be put up this week.

Hall rental was reported by Brother Emil Petr.

Czech Culture -- No report.

Special Committee was reported by Sister E. Salac.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported 8 circles from Lodge 84 danced at the Texas State Fair; a Halloween party to be held on October 30th and youth made Halloween favors during their meeting tonight.

Sunshine report was given by Brother Jarma: A get well card was sent to Brother Rudolph Sadecky, new baby card to Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Collins (Leslie Sill) baby girl, and sympathy card to Charlie Juricek family on loss of his sister, Wilma Brozek.

New Business: Voted on officers' salaries for coming year, selected Nominating Committee, and next lodge meeting November 17th at 7:30 p.m.

87 Announces Meeting Date

SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple met on Friday evening, October 10th at 7:30 p.m. with President Lad is Navratil presiding.

Flag Bearer Jerry Valchar led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance; the members remained standing in silent tribute to deceased members.

Old and new business were discussed and various reports were given.

New member Courtney E. Hejl was welcomed into our lodge.

President Navratil appointed the Nominating Committee as follows: Ed Reisner, Lad Zatopek and Jerry Valchar.

Guests for the evening were Wilma Machalek, Millie Schiller and Mary Reznicek.

A covered dish meal was served to members and guests.

The next meeting will be on Friday evening, November 14th at 7 p.m. due to the time change.

Annie Plsek announced light refreshments to be served in November.

Lodge 88 News

Houston

Ed Kadlecck Jr. and his band from New Braunfels were the featured entertainment on board a seven - day Octoberfest cruise. On October 11th, along with the band, his mother Louise Kadlecek, sister Mary Lou Jamar from Bedford, Louise's niece Pat Proctor from Temple and Ed's wife, Marlene, boarded the MS Caribe I for a Caribbean cruise. They visited San Juan, St. Thomas, St. John, and Puerto Plata. They visited the casinos, did lots of shopping in St. Thomas, toured a rum factory in Puerto Plata, saw the old forts, missions, and palaces in the area and had lots of good food, plenty of sunshine, and I know they danced until dawn to that good polka music.

Gus and Ann Urbanovsky took granddaughter Hillary Markuson on a short trip to points of interest in East Texas. They went to the Indian Reservation in Livingston and took the train ride from Rusk to Palestine and back again. Hillary is in the first grade at Lamar Elementary School.

On Tuesday, October 14th, Oleta Hanus hosted a luncheon for the wives of the Men's Club and a few other close friends in the Club House at their condominium. Helping Oleta serve were Roselee Kostom and Mickey Rice, and husband Louis Hanus was there to help when needed. Before and after the delicious buffet, groups wandered over to see Oleta and Louis's new home. After moving from their big house, they had to do some condensing but everything looked beautiful and I know they are proud of their new "little home." Maybe we all should start thinking along these lines.

We could forget the lawn and yard work, the painting of the house, the roof repair, etc.

The Youth Club will have their monthly cake sale on Thursday, November 13th in the lobby during the Bingo session. If you can, bring them some homemade pastry.

Elsie Talcott, at the age of almost 89, had another first in her life. On Friday, October 24th, she went for a ride in the Goodyear Blimp at Spring, Texas. Accompanying her were daughter and son - in - law, Doris and Henry Knapick, Joe Knapick, Ed and Ellen Miculka. Mrs. Talcott said the blimp ride ranked right up there with her first automobile ride as far as the excitement of it. It was a thrill for all of us. I'm glad Henry had "connections."

On Saturday, November 8th Al Pierson and his big band USA come to town. Advance tickets for dancing in the Chandelier Ballroom are $10 each or $9 with your membership card. This

is an evening - attire dance. The kitchen and Blue Room will be open and it's still BYOB in the ballroom.

Beer and set - ups are sold in the bar area by Bar Manager Joe Miksch and his staff.

On Thursday, October 20th, during our Bingo session, turkeys will be given away as extra prizes. Come on out -- you may be one of the lucky ones.

In one of my recent letters, concerning the dinner that the Men's Club cooked for their spouses, I inadvertently forgot to list Milert Antrich as one of the cooks. He was there all afternoon and helped turn those steaks to perfection.

Lodge 155 Reports

Austin

Our last meeting on September 14th was held at the large unique mobile home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Robertson, nestled in an enchanted forest southeast of Austin, 15 miles from downtown. It was questionable of expecting a sizeable attendance, but all officers and several members were present. Included were the hostess, Georgia Mae Matejck Robertson and her husband, Louis, Mrs. Lillie Hejl and Marianna Wood, John and Laverne Hejl, Sharon Gavin, Faye Mares, Charles and Mina Sponberg, Gary Chmelir, Joe Mikolaj, Raymond and Alice Prasatik.

Meeting was called to order by our President Sharon Gavin with the Pledge of Allegiance recited by Charles Sponberg.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Charles Grohman who died suddenly August 21, 1986 at the age of 66. He was a member of our lodge for 38 years.

Minutes of the previous meeting and communications were read by the secretary including a card from the family of Charles Grohman acknowledging our lodge's expression of sympathy.

It was announced that member Melissa Ann Janak, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Janak (also members), received a $500 scholarship from the SPJST Supreme Lodge. She is attending Texas A&M University, majoring in Industrial and Safety Engineering. She is the first recipient of an SPJST scholarship award in our Lodge 155 and we're proud of her.

Vice President Mina Sponberg read the final corrections of our Rules & Regulations. The committee did a good job.

Nominating Committee for election of 1987 officers include Faye Mares, Gary Chmelir and John B. Hejl.

Members were pleased to see Raymond back in circulation after his prolonged illness. He thanks all of you who remembered him in your prayers for a complete recovery. He is fine and is through with his uninterrupted series of radiation treatments. He thanks you for all the get well cards and personal messages from members of other lodges as well and visits. Our entire family was so supportive in many different ways. Raymond Prasatik has been secretary and financial secretary of this lodge for 52 years.

After the meeting we were given a tour of the home and its additions -- all attractively furnished and comfortable. Louis attached his metal

feet and leg braces so that he could walk with the aid of a walker -- slowly recuperating from a serious stroke over a year ago. He received a round of applause.

After a delicious supper of chicken nuggets with all its trimmin gs and dessert, the members reluctantly parted to go home. Thank you, Georgia Mae and Louis for a delightful, relaxing afternoon.

The next meeting will be on Sunday, November 9th at 2:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Faye Mares, 2815 Glenview; phone 478 - 1055. Be there!

172, Pasadena Activities

Dear Members and Friends: We were afraid the rain would continue to miss us, but we finally got our share of it with more than we hoped for. Our fall garden will be a late one. Maybe it will be a good winter garden if it doesn't freeze too soon.

Sometimes things seem to be going so slowly but time sure isn't slow. It flies by without stopping. Here, again, Thanksgiving is almost here and Christmas is very near.

We are planning to spice up things for Thanksgiving and especially for Christmas. I am talking about decorations not the turkey. A new tree and a few other decorations will help a lot.

New Year's Eve tickets are on sale at $12.50 each. We have a limited number of tickets printed to sell. When those are gone, that's it. We feel that people don't like to be too crowded.

We want to make everyone as comfortable as possible. The music will be furnished by Texas Brew (C..), they are a very popular band here.

We've had two of the once a month Friday night ballroom dances. The music was by Henry Tannenberger, dress code and admission only $4. The music was great and enjoyed very much.

Our last Friday night ballroom dance for 1986 will be held on November 21, 1986, with music by Henry Tannenberger. Please come so you can help in the planning for 1987.

Let us know if you like it and if you have some other band you would like to suggest. People have been asking for some good ballroom dances; that was how we came to have them. If you came to at least one or two or all three, you know what you liked or didn't like but how can you say anything if you didn't come at all. That's fair, isn't it?

Our September regular monthly meeting was well attended. All reports were given. We accepted, by voting, one new member. Welcome to our lodge, Esther Pasterano!

We wish to thank all the members of District V who worked to make the District V meeting on September 21, 1986 a great success. It was enjoyed because someone worked and planned for it. We thank you!

Our last dinner/dance social of this year was scheduled for Sunday, November 2nd. The dinner consisted of roast beef and sausage plus potatoes, pickles and other vegetables to choose from, served from 1 to 3 p.m. The dance was from 3 to 7 p.m. with music by Texas Brew (C..). This was our fourth anniversary celebration of our new and our own lodge home at 3609 Preston in Pasadena, Texas 77501. Members, friends and neighbors were all welcomed.

News From ifoeige 172, Paseena I've been thinking of some of the happenings around our lodge in recent weeks and thought I'd take a minute to express a few thoughts.

We would like to send our condolences to the family of Ann Bingham who recently passed away.

Ann was a member of Lodge 172 for several years and worked diligently, along with her husband Lloyd for as long as she was able to do so. She will be missed.

There have been several of our members who have had illness in recent months and some of them did not make it known, so I would like to take this opportunity to wish the following people full recovery and let them know they are missed.

Ann McKee who recently had back surgery and is now recuperating at home. We hope to see you and Tex dancing before long.

Bonnie Eggleston who was very ill and is now recuperating and since no one knew of her illness, no acknowledgement was made, for which we are very sorry. Hurry back when you are able.

J.B. and Lucille Jackson, both of whom had heart surgery are on the recuperating list, also not known in time to receive acknowledgement or visits. Lucille, let us know how you and J.B. are g etting along, and come back.

Eurline, we hope you are feeling well and we miss you and James. Try to get back to see us soon.

We would like to say "Hi" to Monty and Mary Green who recently moved to Arkansas when he retired from Crown Central Petroleum in Pasadena and she retired from teaching. Hope your retirement and all the work that goes with changing residences 'hasn't been too hard on you. Come back to visit with us just any time. We miss you both.

Reporting From Lodge 172, Pasadena Hello to all of you! We are coming into the season of good feelings and feeling good, and what a time it is. We

all feel good because the first cool spell has come and we know that fall or Indian summer or fall is here and the holiday season is near. Other good feelings come from getting up in the morning and stepping outside and feeling the fresh, brisk, cool air, your ball team winning, and anticipating a successful fall hunting or fishing trip and, most of all, coming from one of our enjoyable dances at the SPJST Grand Ballroom with friends.

Our Lod g e 172 year will be coming to an end soon and you will be electing new officers to run the lodge for the coming year. The December lodge meeting date of December 24th has been changed to December l7th.This will be the monthly and annual meeting, which is the night new officers are elected for the coming year. Lodge members working together is what keeps the lodge hooking good and running smoothly and we need your help in working all the events of the coming year.

PLEASE NOTE: On November 21st, we will have our last ballroom dance of the year to the music of Henry Tannenberger's orhcestra, so come out and join us for a night of good music, good friends_ and for a truly enjoyable evening.

The Christmas party and dance will be held on December 20th for all members and their guests. The party will begin at 6 p.m. with a covered dish meal and dancing will begin at 9 p.m. to the music of Donnie Wavra's C.. and Variety band. Bring your covered dish and join us for a good time at this party. Don't miss the best meal of the year.

We pause for a moment to the memory of Ann Bingham, our beloved friend and sister who passed away recently. We send our best thoughts to her family during their grief caused by her passing away.

Ladies' Circle Of Lodge 92 Dear Members and Friends: It may be me, but it seems as if this entire year has been beyond our wildest imagination in tryine to predict any one season of the year. For instance, last week our weather was a picture of rain and misty fo g with just a touch of dreary winter weather mixed in. It seemed as if the sun and rain were playing a game of hide - and - seek. Now, this week is the opposite.

Our weather is almost a perfect summer - type one. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?

Our meeting day just happened to be a nice pleasant one and everyone was glad to be outside once again. We had 45 ladies and 10 men present.

The meeting opened with all officers present. Florence Greer, president, opened the meeting with a welcome to all. Frances Blake, secretary, read the minutes after which Evelyn Spacek gave the treasurer's report.

Lillie Chairperson Sunshine McMillen sent a card to Bennie

Hundle. Marie Tesar was reported in the hospital as an outpatient and Dona Hubenak, our vice president, had eye surgery. Thank you cards were also read from Evelyn Spacek, Nancy Paprskar and Edwin Simmank.

Since we will not have a business meeting when we have our meeting in November, we discussed our December meeting which will be on December 9th. Hostesses for this meeting will be Tillie Gillis, Herrnina, Phyllis and Mary Cihacek.

Helen Jaworski made a motion to bring a $3 exchange gift for our Christmas party. Motion carried.

Door prize for December will be given by Elma Anderson. The door prize, furnished this month by Rosie Zalesak, was won by Catherine Kosarek.

Joyce Tesar announced the October 25th dance for the youth group and Esta Belle Hubenak asked for cake donations for this event.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to the ones having birthdays in October and November. Czech Genealogy Workshop In Central Texas

A Czech Genealogy Workshop will be held in the SPJST Lodge No. 29 Hall at Taylor, Texas on Saturday.

December 6th. Registration will start at 9 a.m. and the genealogy workshop will continue until 4 p.m.

Talks and instructions will be presented on how to research your Czech ancestors in Czechoslovakia, and how to locate them on passenger lists. Also, advice will be given on how to research persons of Czech ancestry in Texas courthouses, churches, and the Federal Census.

Books on Czech Genealogy will be available for browsing and for sale.

"Experts" will be available to help you on your family research. SPJST Lodge No. 29 will host the seminar which will be conducted by the Czech Heritage Society of Texas.

A registration fee of $2 per person will be charged to cover expenses.

Moravian Folk Orchestra & Dance A musical group from Czechoslovakia which specializes in Czech and Moravian folk music will perform on Saturday evening, November 15th in Bryan, Texas. The folk orchestra and dance troupe, named Podluzan, will perform native Moravian dances. The orchestra will also provide music for ballroom dancing.

This spectacular musical and dance performance, in full folk costume and of a type which has never been seen in Texas, will be a Czechoslovak salute to the important Czech - Moravian heritage of the state. However, this is only part ot' a 3 - day program entitled, "Czech Music In Texas: A Sesquicentennial Symposium," scheduled for the Brazos Center in Bryan, November 14 - 16, 1986. Co sponsored by the Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas and the Brazos County Sesquicentennial Commission, the program includes lectures by prominent folklorists, musicologists, writers, and other scholars; panel discussions on the value and meaning of Czech music in the state; and performances of Czech classical music by concert pianists, in addition to appearances by popular polka bands, orchestras, choral groups, and dance groups from all over Texas.

The program will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Friday evening, with a dance by the well - known Texas Czech band The Vrazels and will end Sunday night with a dance by the popular Jodie Mikula Orchestra.

Among the featured performances on Saturday and Sunday will be those by the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra, the SPJST Lodge No. 88 Czech Concert Orchestra, the Seaton Brass Band, the Czech Choral Group of Houston, the Dallas Czech Singers, the Czech Singers ot' Victoria, the University Czech Singers, the Czech Folk Dancers of West, the Texas Czech Beseda Dancers, Norbert Blazek and the Texas Czech Folk Singers, the Gulf Coast Czech Singers, the Heritage Singers of South Texas, Bob Schlecte and Friends (polka band), and special "surprise" guests.

Individual performers of classical and folk music will include Markus Hanus, Michael Beckerman, John Novak, Zdena Salivarova, Kevin Hannan, and Barbara Dybala.

Among the speakers will be the Czech novelist Josef Skvorecky, who now lives in Toronto, the anthropologist Zdenek Salzmann, and several other Texas, American, and international scholars, such as Svatava Jakobson, James Leary, John J. Karas, and Calvin Chervenka.

Bernard M. Gebala will moderate a panel of Czech music radio hosts on the subject of "The Future of Czech Music In Texas:" Helen Pavelka, Al Kozel, Alfred Vrazel, Rudy Sefcik, and Lada Cerny.

James W. Mendl will conduct a series of interviews (open to the public) with current and former Texas Czech bandleaders and members of their bands and families. This project is being coordinated with Joseph Janak and other researchers who are reconstructing the history of Texas Czech bands and orchestras. Exhibits of antique musical instruments, song books, and other artifacts will be on display.

A Catholic Mass with Czech liturgy and music and Czech Protestant services will be held on the symposium site on Sunday morning.

Choral Club To Perform At Praha Memorial Services

The officers and directors of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas will meet in Bryan, Texas on November 16, 1986, from noon to 1 p.m. This will be during the Czech Music Symposium on November 14th through 16th. All officers and directors are urged to be there. The place for the Music Symposium will be at the Brazos Center, just off Highway 6 on the East Bypass.

Once again, the San Antonio Czech Choral Club has been honored to perform at the annual Veterans Memorial Services on Sunday, November 9th.

The group will lead the audience with the Pledge of Allegiance in Czech; also singing will be in Czech; "My Country Tis Of Thee" (Ma vlasti), "The Battle Hymn Of The Republic," and "God Bless America," all at the cemetery. During dinner, they will be performing in the Praha Pavilion.

Brother Ernest Chalupka, ites the public to attend chairman, invites this solemn and most impressive service; the least we can do is to attend such memorial service somewhere, some place for those who have paid the supreme sacrifice and to always remember them in our thoughts and prayers, also be thankful for the many blessings that we have received because of their deeds.

Brother William Pavliska, member of San Antonio Czech Choral Club and of SPJST Lodge No. 107, Floresville, is showing the judges his fine peanuts he raised this year on his 250 - acre farm. Bill said this was the best year he had and hopes the weather continues to be in his favor for the remainder of the harvest season. Good luck, Bill!

Czech Choral Club Wins First Place The San Antonio Czech Choral Club, who participated in the annual Floresville Peanut Festival, came home with a blue ribbon. Although it rained most of the morning before the parade got started, the members kept on singing and at the same time had a lot of fun and enjoyed it very much.

Our 10x 20 -flat bed trailer float was decorated with peanuts all around it. A white picket fence was placed with greenery wrapped around the posts and red roses were placed on the picket fence on both sides of the trailer. A g reen indoor/outdoor rug covered the floor and bales of hay were placed on the floor for members to sit on. Our

prize was awarded for singing and having an artistic float. The group later performed on the city square for 45 minutes.

We wish to thank Brother Edward Hosek for drivin g the pickup that pulled our float, also want to thank Polly's Flower Shop for helping with the flowers, to Brother Bill Pavliska for furnishing all the peanuts and having a place to decorate the float, plus many other details that had to be worked out.

Members in the group mostly consisted of members from Floresville Lodge 107 and San Antonio Lodge 133.

The Czech singers are now making preparations to go to Praha Veterans Memorial Service on November 9th where they will take part in the program at the cemetery.

New Tabor SPJST Held Banquet

District VII Youth at District VII Meeting on September 21st -- Amy Doeppenschmidt, Jennifer Marek, Stacie Bielefeld, Donald Marek, Trey Bielefeld, Brett Doeppenschmidt, and April Haag.

The New Tabor SPJST Lodge 17 Youth Club held its annual appreciation banquet with the theme of Texas Sesquicentennial. After a meal was served by the youth club, entertainment was presented and awards eiven out.

The youth club members who had perfect attendance were Mica Petty, Kristen Cannon, Holly Suehs, Mindy Suehs, Lana Urbanovsky, Chris Beasley, Tim Beasley and Shaunna Haisler.

A trophy was given to the winners of a Straight Domino Tournament that we had after a meeting during the year.

Winners in the Junior division were Jason Paul and Dana Urbanovsky.

The Senior division winners were Kristen Cannon and Lana Urbanovsky.

An individual talent show was then presented by some of the youth club members. They were Holy Suehs.

Dear Readers, Our September 13th regular meeting was held followed by a movie trip, also supper at Pizza Inn and finally for dessert at Dairy Queen. Birthday celebrant for September was Susan Carey, sgt. - at - arms and reporter for the club.

September 26th and 27th at Bayfest '86. This trip was enjoyed because at this occasion, there are many performances: art exhibits, games, etc.

The crowd was estimated for the 3 days at 500,000.

On September 21st District VII held its fall meeting and Family Day at the Bavarian Village in New Braunfels, which is owned and operated by Brother Roy and Sister Theresa Haag.

The youth were kept busy making assorted ornaments and decorating gingerbread men. Sister Betty Doeppenschmidt, youth leader of No. 185 Hill Country, instructed the youth.

These crafts were enjoyed by youth and adults.

On October 11th several youth clubbers attended the Shrine Circus; also the club sponsored handicapped children to the circus.

October 18th regular monthly meeting was held. Swann Hill was the October celebrant.

October 25th a very successful Halloween party was held at 6 p.m. at Jackson Woods Scout Hut. The members decorated the Scout Hut. The fun thing that evening was the Pumpkin Pinata. This was hung in a tree and the workers were Donald Marek and Alex Landin. Next on the agenda was Bingo (no money involved) only prizes. The attendance was good, 24 children and 8 adults.

November 8th -- Movie trip is planned November 15th -- Making Christmas decorations for nursing home November 22nd -- Regular Meeting The project for September was clothing to abused children. November project -- food for a needy family.

December project -- gifts to nursing homes. This is all that is planned.

Besides working hard durin g the year, they also plan fun activities like swimming parties, camp and social parties. All kinds of creatures were lurking in the dark. Here is a guest and Tommy Harrison is waiting for the next victim.

Dear Members, The Taylor Lodge No. 29 Youth Club meeting was held on October 12th at 3 p.m. We had 34 youths and 14 adults attending. Four new members joined our club. They are Jonathan Kubala, Jenny Kubala, both of Thrall, Misty Johnson and Mandy Johnson, both of Round Rock. The youth leaders brought Halloween candy, cookies and popcorn balls for the snack.

The Fund - Raising Committee passed out the items to sell. The members will be selling decorative match boxes at $4 each and vanilla extract at $1.50 each. Please make sure you sell everything because we cannot send it back.

The youth voted to have a "lock in" at the hall on October 17th as their social. We had 80 kids and 10 adults.

The Decorating Committee met October 16th and built a spookhouse.

It was a big success. The Teenagers went to sleep about 5 a.m. and the Juniors stayed up all night watching movies and played games. We had lots of guests attending the "lock - in."

Members, you need to encourage the guests to join at our next meeting on November 9th at 3 p.m.

Lodge 17 Youth Club Meeting The president of Lodge No. 17, New Tabor Youth Club called the monthly meeting to order on October 5th.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led and roll call was called. The minutes were then read by our secretary.

We finalized our plans for the lodge's annual barbecue held in October. Each family member of the youth club was asked to bring a cake for our youth club's cake auction.

Under new business we made plans for attending an A&M football game.

The meeting was then adjourned.

Dear Members, The month of October has been a very busy month for us. On Tuesday, October 7th, we had our monthly meeting.

Every Wednesday, we practiced Beseda until October 26th which will be Czech Day. Wednesday, October 22nd, the Juniors had their Halloween party. We played games and had a costume contest. We had refreshments for everyone.

Sunday, October 26th was our annual Czech Day. The youth club cleaned tables. Three Beseda groups danced for the program. Everyone had a good time.

(Littimarittin We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother ALVIN GLENN SCHILLER, who passed away on September 19, 1986 in Burleson County Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was 62 years of age.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 21st in Phillips - Luckey Chapel in Caldwell , with the Rev. Phil Lovelace, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating. Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery.

Brother Schiller was born in Caldwell, Texas, the son of the late John W. and Clarice Johnson Schiller.

He was married to Frances Wade on September 20, 1945 in Lake City, Florida.

Brother Schiller was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy based in the Air Station in Lake City, Florida. He also served overseas in the South Pacific Theater. After his service duties, he returned to Caldwell.

Brother Schiller attended Mortuary School in Houston, receiving an embalmer's license in 1949 and funeral director's license in 1948. He was associated with Harvey Schiller Furniture Store and Funeral Home, serving in this profession for 38 years.

He had been with Phillips - Luckey Funeral Home since 1972.

He participated in community projects, was a member of the Caldwell Lions Club, Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department for 38 years, member of Warren Lodge No. 56 AF&AM and the Order of the Eastern Star of Caldwell. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Texas Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association.

Survivors include his wife, Frances of Caldwell; daughter, Glenda and son - in - law, Gary York of Waco; two grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Bernice George of Caldwell and ten nieces.

One brother, J.W. Schiller, preceded him in death.

May our departed lodge brother rest in eternal peace and may his memory live among us forever.

"There is so much land that is not in production," said Urban, with the assistance of an interpreter, J.C. Zbranek. "But we are impressed by the great many material possessions, the technical advancements you have here in farming. We were impressed with the beautiful and modern city of Austin and all the implement dealers."

Urban, Mrs. Cerny and Picka are from a farming collective near Olomouc, southeast of Prague in central Czechoslovakia. They are spending three weeks touring Texas at the invitation of State Agriculture Commissioner Jim Hightower to learn more about American methods of farming.

Urban serves as the head of the collective, while Picka is the director of cattle breeding and Mrs. Cerny cares for chickens.

They stopped in Temple on Tuesday, where they toured the SPJST Museum to examine the history of Czechs in Central Texas, and visited a farm and a ranch.

With the help of Zbranek, who lives in Devers, and his brother, L.L. Zbranek of Liberty, the Czech threesome learned about embryo transfer at River Oaks Genetics in Rogers.

Ranch owner Jim Brown explained the process of implanting embryos of superior Brahman parents into average "surrogate mother" cows, such as a Holstein - Brahman mix.

The process allows ranchers to greatly increase the number of full blood Brahmans born each year and, as Brown told Picka, "feed the world."

services. Rev. F.T. Sager gave a small devotional for the volunteers. He expressed what a great feeling of peace that overcomes you when you do for others.

Pauline Kovar, activity director of the home, read two poems, "I've Never Seen God" and "He Pointed His Finger At Me." She expressed that the volunteers' time made life a little brighter for each resident. Afterwards everyone enjoyed the refreshments and fellowship.

Picka, who has a degree from the Agricultural University in Brno, Moravia, said most of the cattle on the collective are diary cattle, which the Czechs must also use for beef, resulting in lower quality meats.

"We want to do some crossing to try to improve our beef," Picka said.

"The real purpose of our visit is to gain some knowledge and experiences over here that we can take home to improve our agriculture system."

The Czech collective has about 10,000 acres, 1,024 head of cattle and about 1,000 employees, Urban said.

Of the 10,000 acres, about 4,500 are forest, which is cut for hoe handles and other implements. The rest of the acreage is tillable.

"We have a marginal wheat crop," Urban said. "But our principal land is pasture for the feeding of our cattle and sheep. We also have a machineshop to do repair work on our machines."

Picka said he visited Canada about 20 years ago and was impressed then with the technical advances in North American farming.

"Since then, there have been many changes," he said. "I like the high productivity of work here. People make good use of their technology."

Mrs. Cerny said she is most amazed by the technical advances in the American home.

"The American housewife has a much lighter role," she said, with help from intepreter Thelma Bartosh, "because of all the appliances, Microwave ovens, dishwashers, air conditioning. The American woman doesn't realize how lucky she is compared to" women in some European nations.

The trio will depart for Czechoslovakia November 4th, taking with them many notes and photographs from Texas.

"We read and study a lot about agriculture in America," said Urban, "but it is simply not possible to appreciate all you have here until you see how it all works. We will tell our families and friends about what we have seen here, and we will use our knowledge to improve agriculture in our country.
