`Editor' COMMENTS

In this column this week let us touch on SPJST, first, before other items and news.

All members, and especially students, including all readers and friends should read all the articles from our Supreme Lodge officers on Paee 3.

First is the report from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar pertaining to changes to the SPJST Scholarship Program for the 1987/88 school year. Read this carefully!

Second is the Annunity Program report from Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernard Gebala which is very appropriate and informative.

Keep in mind that, on many investments that earn interest, you are taxed by the IRS on that interest as earnings. However, on SPJST IRA and Annuity Investments, your earned interest is tax - deferred until you start withdrawing the account which, in all probability, will be after you retire and then your earnings will be less and you will not be taxed on your interest nearly as much by IRS. Think this over, carefully, even if you are in a younger age category!

Third is the report from Supreme Lodge Secretary/Treasurer Leonard Mikeska concerning the loan interest rates beine lowered and adjusted. Also please read that information carefully.

Remember, the SPJST is your Society and your SPJST, through the Supreme Lodge Body, tries to be fraternal and considerate of its fellow membership. ** * In this issue is an updated list of donors to the Czech Educationl Foundation of Texas (CEFT) to establish a permanent endowment (chair) of Czech language teaching at University of Texas (Austin) or Texas A&M University ($500,000). Please read it and see the amount of donations contributed to the related matter.

There is also a list of present CEFT officers and directors to whom you can give your donations and they will forward them to Professor Jos. J. Skrivanek. Your editor is one of them.

Professor Skrivanek ends his personal note to the editor with: `Brother Sefcik, we just have to reach the $500,000 in 1986!" Let us NOT disappoint HIM including OURSELVES. ** * This past week the editor's office received numerous long distance calls from various parts of Texas advising us how they enjoyed the Czech Day spectacular in Dallas on October 5th.

It was gratifying to hear good results of the American - Czechoslovak Day Program which included a performance by a Czech orchestra, a speech by U.S. Representative Joe Barton, a promenade of Czech authentic (kroje) costumes, children's songs and dances, Czech folk songs by a united group from all over Texas, plus Louisiana and Nebraska, a special Sokol gymnastic group and 35 Czech Beseda dancing groups.

We commend the program coordinators, committees, participants and supporters of this huge undertaking for your participation in the Grand Sesquicentennial Program, despite the rains. Let us continue keeping our Czech culture and heritage alive! Your editor regrets not being able to attend, however, we were there in spirit with all who participated.

Some scheduled appointments at Scott & White Hospital in Temple for Monday and Tuesday kept us from attending. The results turned out well.

The NFCA is a trade association of 100 fraternal benefit societies that provide 10,000,000 North Americans with life and health insurance, and the volunteer opportunities to help others in their local communities. Fraternal benefit societies that are members of the National Fraternal Congress Association have a combined total of $104 billion of life insurance in force, or about three percent of all ordinary life insurance in force in the United States, and last year they spent more than $242 million nurturing one of the continent's largest volunteer networks, composed of their members.

The three - day annual convention was attended by more than 800 delegates and guests and included a number of workshops on insurance and fraternal issues. The event was held at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Washington, D.C. Parents can save time and money by having their young children take three vaccines at one time, rather than three months apart. The vaccines are for MMR (measles, mumps and rubella), DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, or whooping cough) and polio. Previously, the first MMR shot was administered at age 15 months and a fourth DTP shot and a third dose of oral polio vaccine at 18 months. Now, the immunization practices Advisory Committee at the National Centers for Disease Control says it's O.K. to give all three doses in the same doctor's visit. The timetable for other doses of DTP and polio vaccine, which begin at two months, doesn't change. *** Users of microwave ovens -- now found in half of all households -should take care when heating water, because it may not boil even if put through the heating cycle several times. Yet the water can soar above the normal boiling point of 212 degrees Fahrenheit during this process. Result: The cup may be too hot to hold. You risk severe burns if the water spills. If you add such substances as instant coffee or cocoa powder, the water can boil over. To make liquids boil as they should, manufacturers suggest stirring them before putting them in the microwave. *** The last thing you think of when renting a safe - deposit box is whether your valuables are insured. But vaults can be robbed or destroyed by fire, leaving renters unprotected. Just a couple of years ago, thieves drilled through the vault of a bank in a large city and stole $3 million from safe deposit boxes. If your bank doesn't provide insurance, as many don't, you can add a floater to your regular homeowner's policy. ***

From 71-!-te President's Office ATTENTION TO ALL SPJST MEMBERS: I would like to bring to each and every member's attention, the following changes that took place in the October meeting of the Supreme Lodge. The Board met and the following, changes are in effect for the SPJST Scholarship Program: [1] Limit to one scholarship per individual for applicants in the 1987/88 school year and thereafter [starting with the 1987/88 school year, no more than one scholarship will be awarded to any applicant during his/her scholastic years.

[2] Require full benefit membership of a minimum of at least one year prior to application date.

[3] Minimum insurance requirement discontinued.

The deadline for requesting application forms is April 30th, with the completed forms to be in by June 30th.

From The SecretaryTreasurer's Office SPJST LOWERS MORTGAGE RATES The SPJST has reduced its interest rate on Home, Farm and Commercial mortgages. The new rates for Home and Farm loans are: 10 percent for 10 years 10 1/4 percent for 11 to 15 years 10'/z percent for 16 to 20 years The new rates for (owner - operated) Commercial mortgages are: 11 percent for 10 years 11 1/4 percent for 11 to 15 years The property to secure a loan must be one of the following: (1) Dwelling to be occupied by owner (2) Rural or Farm property on which there is or will be a dwelling which will be used as an owner residence (3) Farm or Ranch property to be used as an owner - operated Farm or Ranch (4) Certain types of Commercial property on a selective basis when the property is used to conduct an owner operated business.

One year membership is required to qualify for loan consideration.

Additionally, the applicant and spouse should have at least $25,000 of SPJST insurance in force. If you have less than $25,000 SPJST insurance, you should purchase the additional amount

needed prior to filing a loan application.

The SPJST can lend up to 75 percent of the appraised value on first - class residential real estate. For example, if the land and dwelling are ,appraised at $40,000, the maximum we can lend on such security is $30,000. All appraisals are made by one or more of our appraising directors. The maximum that we can lend to any individual is $100,000.

The SPJST does refinance mortgages. We also make loans to purchase real estate or to improve real estate by constructing improvements under a builder's and mechanic's lien contract.

If you already own the property and it is your homestead, any loan will be limited to amounts for refinancing of an existing valid lien or amounts covered under a valid builder's and mechanic's lien contract entered into and recorded prior to starting the improvements. If you feel you may want to finance any portion of improvements or cost of a construction project, we urge you to seek legal advice prior to starting the project.

Application forms and additional information can be obtained from the Secretary/Treasurer's Department in the Home Office or by contacting the director of your district.

Letter To The Editor Mr. Rudy Sefcik P.O. Box 85 West, Texas 76691 Dear Rudy: I have enclosed some pictures that I took at the District VII fall meeting and Family Day on Sunday, September 21st.

There was a nice attendance of adult members and of youth members. The meeting was held at the Bavarian Village in New Braunfels, which is owned and operated by our members, Brother Roy and Sister Theresa Haag.

The Bavarian Village is a nice facility.

District VII Secretary Betty Jurica has been a member of SPJST for 55 years and she has not missed a district meeting since the district started holding meetings. She is also one of the daughters of the late District VII Director Charles Holasek.

The IRA Program has changed considerably for tax year 1987. As we near the end of 1986, taxpayers should act now to make their fully deductible IRA contribution. There will be new limits on IRA deductibility that will be imposed in tax year 1987 so I urge you to take advantage of current allowances and make a fully deductible contribution on your 1986 IRA prior to April 15, 1987.

New legislation will limit deductions of IRA contributions for certain taxpayers in 1987. An important part of this law is that even if your ability to make deductible IRA contributions is reduced or eliminated; you can still make an IRA contribution up to $2,000 (or $2,250 with spousal account) limit, and enjoy tax - deferred earnings on your IRA investment.

The point of this message is that the SPJST Annuity Program was and is a tremendous retirement plan which will strengthen your retirement income.

Remember, the earlier in the year that you make your contribution, the more interest you will earn on your investment.

Lodge 35 To Host District Meeting Dear Members: On Sunday, October 12th, the meeting was called to order by our president.

Flag Bearer Dawn Pavelka led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The secretary and treasurer gave their reports.

Youth Leader Louise Burney gave the youth club report.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Vernon Dulock and Wendy Whitley Chairpersons' reports were also made by the following members: Ruby Pavelka -- Kitchen Randy Pavelka -- Floor Johnny Stuchly -- Refreshments They thanked everyone who helped them.

Congratulations to Sister Velma Clemons who entered items at the Waco Fair. She won 20 first places, 17 second places, 15 third places, and 14 Honorable Mentions. We are proud of you, Velma!

Lodge 35 will host the District III spring meeting next year.

We were glad to have Sister Helen Dulock back at the meeting. Sister Helen will go into Providence Hospital on October 19th to have back surgery on October 20th. Helen, we wish you a speedy recovery.

Sister Marie Reichardt is on the sick list. We hope you have a speedy recovery, Sister Marie.

On Friday, December 12th we are going to have a dance, Cherokee Rose is going to play.

On December 13th we will have our Christmas party.

Due to Verna Pavelka being out - of - town, she asked me to be the reporter. I hope she will be back next month.

Door prizes were won by Jesika Tierce -- youth and Helen Pospisil -adult.

After the meeting we had a delicious fried chicken dinner. We always have good fellowship. Come and visit with US.

Our next meeting will be on November 9th at 3 p.m.

47 October Meeting

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The October lodge meeting was held on Sunday, October 12th at 1 p.m. with lodge President Jerry Pechal calling the assembly to order. This meeting was delayed a week due to Czech Day participation of the Choral Club and two circles of Beseda dancers from Lodge 47 at the State Fair.

Flag Bearers Heidi Schroeder and Tracy Klusacek led the pledge to the flag. A moment of silence in memory of Brother John Franklin (Frank) tucker, 66, a prominent citizen of Rogers who passed away on September 17th was held. Honor to his memory and deepest sympathy to his family.

President Pechal welcomed everyone to the lodge meeting and the visitors were recognized; namely, Ann Balusek, Gertrude Kahlig, Terry Ducher, Freddie Schroeder, John and Cindy Messer. The invitation is out for you to come to any meeting again.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers and sales representatives. The minutes of our

previous meeting were read and approved as read. Correspondence included a thank you card from the family of Brother Jim Edward Mayes for the floral arrangement for the funeral service, and two requests for donations but these had been donated to previously in the year.

New members accepted were Christine L. Macek, Marina Mungia, Chris Allen Truelove, Donald E. Pisar, William John Talasek, Elsie Jez, Lonnie and Olga Schroeder. fransters from Lodge 177 were Manuel Martinez, Sr., Mary Ann Martinez, Manuel Martinez,, Jr., Samuel Martinez and Dawn Martinez.

William W. Wofford, Jr. and Joe Lee Kruse had their policies converted. A warm welcome to each named and may you become active in lodge activities.

On the sick list for September and up to meeting time were Sisters Frances Hejl, Rosie Christenson and Mary Shenkir who broke her hip recently. Brothers Walter Haisler and Arnold Dubcak had also been hospitalized. May your health improve daily until complete recovery is near.

All the officers gave their monthly reports and so did the chairpersons. l'he president reported that the State "42" Tournament would be held Saturday, October 18th at Star Hall and our representatives will be Brother Wallace and Sister Elsie Jez. Kitchen chairpersons are needed for December, and a donation to the Memorial Fund trorn Brother Frank and Sister Irma Klinkovsky in memory of Brothers Jerry rrampota and J.D. Chlapek, $10 each.

Board Secretary Adeline Kohutek read the trustees' minutes to inform members of their deliberations.

Audit Chairman Woodrow Marek gave the third quarterly report for the comm ittee.

President Pechal asked John Messer it he wished to speak. He stated that they just stopped on their way to the Westphalia Church Picnic. He visited with those present after the meeting.

They will have their social on October 18th with a wiener roast at the hall and later a hayride; sounds like fun. The youth club is selling kettle cleaners for a fund - raising project.

District II Director Willie E. Kohutek reported on the deliberations of the Supreme Lodge in their quarterly meeting held in October.

Brother Frank Klinkovsky reported on the District II fall meeting and fun carnival held at Star Hall. He thanked everyone for the help and the food brought or prepared here. I feel that next year we will have an increased participation by members again. He was the chairman of the Salary Committee and he gave their report, with only one change in one price due to change in Rules and Regulations.

Brother Anton Vitek was chairman of the Rules & Regulations for 1987.

The assembly accepted all of the changes that were proposed minus one sentence.

Birthdays will be observed in the month of October by Dan Balusek, Nick Morris, Frank and Ruth Janacek.

Wedding anniversaries in October are Dan and Ann Balusek, Edward and Lucy Mihatsch, Alfred and Martha Klusacek. May all of you celebrate many more.

The year is drawing to an end. The committee to check on the eligibility of members willing to serve as lodge officers and trustees was appointed.

Ruth Janacek accepted to serve on this committee. The number of meetings, attended and lodge dues paid determine eligibility.

The lodge Christmas party will be held on Sunday, December 12th with the usual turkey and dressing. More details will be forthcoming when they are finalized. Salads and sweets will be brought and other food prepared at the hall.

A work day is scheduled for Saturday, October 25th at 8 a.m. with an option tor the following Saturday if complications occur.

Dear Members and Friends: On Sunday. October 12th our active members met despite the fact that most sports lovers were engrossed in the et fort s of the Dallas Cowboys.

Attendance was off a little but 'lodge business proceeded normally.

It was so good to see our Guide Richard Hubenak present because he has missed several meetings due to illness. A thank you card was read by Secretary Christine Zich from our Financial Secretary Evelyn Spacek thanking everyone for their concern hollowing the death of her mother, Sister Ida Foyt on September 22nd.

All officers' reports were made and accepted. Hall Manager Joyce Tesar stated in her report that she hoped we would all attend the Halloween dance on Saturday, October 25th, and try to bring along a guest or several friends, hopefully, wearing costumes. She also announced that the tickets we. were liven as we entered were for four door prize'drawings. The winners were Joy Paprskar, Esta Belle Hubenak, Clara Cohen and Bunny Tesar.

Our Sunshine Chairperson Martha Durham reported sending greetings to tourteen senior citizen members celebrating their birthdays in October.

Get Well cards were mailed to Marie fesar who had been an outpatient for surgery at All Saints Hospital and to Kim Ku bala who underwent emergency surgery on Saturday, October Ilth.

We all wish to extend our congratuiations to John and Mary Motl of I ort Worth Lodge No. 92 who will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on October 24th. This half century of happiness began in Temple, Texas. May they enjoy many more delightful years together!

Staci Hubenak, one of the first place w inners in the State YAD, was in Austin this weekend at the request of sYD Sue Meadows. Staci performed her winning dance number for the Texas' Fraternal Congress. Our own Youth Club Leader Gordon Hubenak stated that the young people would be quite involved in the Halloween dance plans. They request cakes from anyone who would be so kind to donate them for the cake wheel and as an added incentive to being helpful. Gordon said that prizes will be given for the best decorated cakes. The winners will be announced at the dance intermission.

There will also be a Jack - 0 - Lantern contest. The youth will enter their carved pumpkins and votes for your favorite entry will cost one cent each.

Winners will be determined by the amount of money in the jar beside their entry. This is a money - making endeavor for the children. Prizes will also be awarded to winners of best costumes in three juvenile age groups.

Awards also will be given to adults chosen from several categories.

The next discussion concerned the party for the four lodges of Arlington, Burleson and Fort Worth. Your culpable scribe apologized for the error in last month's report. It was incorrectly stated that this party and dance would be on. December 21st. The correct date is December 7th. We are looking forward to seeing a good iepresentation from all the lodges. If the ladies would kindly bring pastry to complement the noon meal, the Dinner Committee would be most grateful.

Before adjournment a motion was made to -begin our November 9th meeting at 1 p.m. instead of the '2 p.m. customar y time because of the election Of officers. The slates chosen for the tour lodges will he installed at the party on December 7th.

Plans were made to attend our first family Night on Tuesday, October 21st at 6:30 p.m. Members were asked to bring cards, dominoes, games, etc.

Our meeting adjourned at 3:30 p.m. and the membership then enjoyed a grilled steak dinner arranged by Mary Ann Krivanek assisted by a group of olunteers. Our November chefs will he Al and Alene Kercho.

Dear Readers: Our regular monthly meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 12, 1986 by President Dennis Hermis.

We had 41 members and guests who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and remained standing for a few moments of silence for our departed Sister Naomi Paul. May she rest in peace.

Secretary Alice Jochen held roll call of officers and read the minutes from our previous meeting, which stood approved as read.

Financial Secretary report was given

Elizabeth Hermis, our youth leader, gave the youth club report.

No sick members were in the hospital for this month, however, we were sorry to hear that Nancy Perez was not feeling well.

New applicant for the month was Ricky Hooper, Jr., signed up by Sales Representative Sidon Tumis.

We were happy to recognize visitors Nelson Cullum, Joe Gambil and Mrs. Burl. All of you are always welcome.

President Dennis Hermis thanked all who attended District V Family Day at Pasadena. They all reported a good time.

Capsule attendance prize for $70 went unclaimed by Thomas D. Kubeczka. The next month's prize will go to $80. Come to our meeting because you could be the lucky one.

We didn't have a- youngest member under 16 years of age who hadn't won already so our $5 attendance prize, in this category, went to the oldest member present and none other then Sister Betty Baletka. Congratulations, Mrs. Baletka!

Dear Members and Friends: Are you enjoying this beautiful weather? It sure put a spark in my step. eceding our meeting Sunday a group of our members met at Sister Martha Janea's Cate for her special Czech dinner which was enjoyed by all.

Our meeting was called to order by President Jerry Milan.

Brother Jerry led us to the pledge to our I lag and members remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed Brother Ned vlitef I. May he rest in eternal peace and we extend our sincere sympathy to all of his family.

Our guest Parker Davis was recognized.

All the officers were present, except our youth leader, she was in Huntsville along with her family and parents, sister and husband attending the Prison Rodeo.

All reports were approved as read. A thank you note from Sister Evelyn Spacek and family was read, also a card from Sisters Maria Prill and Eva Dockery while in Germany and Switzerland. They arrived home safely and reported a wonderful time Sister Mary Renfro reported on additional insurance sold.

Brother Milan apologized for not being able to be the Master of Ceremonies on Czech Day at the State Fair. We are happy to report he is feeling somewhat better. We got good reports on the fair by Brother Frank Kovar and Sister Rose Steinman. The rain didn't dampen the spirits of those attending and, luckily, it quit raining in time for the program in the Cotton Bowl. Everyone said I really missed a wonderful day. (I was working the Octoberfest for 2 days.) I am still hearing about the delicious dinner served by Sister Bessie Petr at the banquet. It seemed like everyone had a big time. Congratulations!

Sister Merle Kovar encouraged all to attend the Musical Festival in Bryan on November 14 - 16, and Brother Milan encouraged us to attend a reception at

the Round Up Inn on Thursday, October 23rd for Martina Navratilova at 7:30 p.m.

Brother Brad Durham said he was asked if we could have some Beseda rings for the Cowboys Home Game.

Brother Milan announced we would have our "42" Domino Tournament on Sunday, November 2nd. (I failed to get the time. You may call 237 - 5181, 237 - 4237 or 624 - 8631.)

Sister Carolyn Cleveland left word that at the Halloween party on Thursday, October 30th at 7 p.m., B.J. and Lester from the Club House Cartoons on Channel 39 will be there to sign autographs: Sisters are asked to bring cookies, or some goodies for the social following.

Melissa Johnson arrived home safely from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She was District Student Council of 'Azle High School. Trey Steinman also arrived home safely from Pennsylvania where the Dorothy Shaw Bell 'Choir performed. This is Prey's third year. On December 18th he leaves for New Zealand, Australia.

Sisters Anna Johnson, Rose Steinman and Mary Pavey worked in the Czech Museum at the State Fair last Wednesday. Seeing that we were tiorn Fort Worth on our name tags, we met several people who were surprised that we knew their families. We came home with messages to give their lan-nly. We had a busy day and so many commented on our display. It was a fun day.

A new flag was donated to our lodge and Sokol by Joe Shaw.

Sister Jeanie Mason 'was our door prize winner, after saying, "I never k in!" Never can tell!

We extend our get well wishes to Mary Tesar and Natalie Maly who are now home recuperating, and to Kim Kubala who 'is in the All' Saints Hospital. Get well soon!

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, November 9th at 3 p.m.

The meeting adjourned to a lot of goodies, which we didn't need after that dinner and domino games.

Memorials were made in memory of Brother Don Steinman by the M Bank Services, Missy Lloyd, and J.A. and Betty Jordan of Carmichael, California.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave her report and it was a good one Sunshine Reporter Mary Kosut also g Ne her report and she sent get well cards to the sick sisters, and birthdays cards to the ones who had a birthday in October; namely, Sisters Frances Olexa, Mildred Holman and Mary Kosut. We missed the sisters who are still ill and not able to attend the meeting. Our prayers are with each and everyone.

The Birthday Club decided to take a pot plant to Emily Bily.

Thanks to Ima Lero for the cards she donated to the club and to Georgia Buchanan for the cremora she gave.

October 26th is Czech Day and the Birthday Club will appreciate all the pastries and cakes they can get for that day.

I want to say thanks to Pearl Hanka for doing the last report for me.

Hostesses for October were Kathy Trefell, Betty Kulhanek, Rita Alexander and Edna Froelich. The second Wednesday was Gladys Pulley helping instead of Rita Alexander. We want to say special thanks to Mike Tretell and Homer Alexander for helping. These men are great!

156 Informative Meeting Lodge

Baytown Lodge No 156 met on September 29, 1986 at 7 P.m. in the Wyatt's Cafeteria.

President Cleo Leibhatn called our meeting to order. Minutes from our last tneeting were read and approved, also the financial secretary gave his report.

We were very lucky to have Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Prochazka as our guests.

Brother Prochazka is the District V director and he gave us a brief outline of the business aspects of the lodge and also talked about direct billing. It was a very informative evening for all of US.

The next lodge meetin g will be held on December 3rd.

SVPS Chapter No. 9 Meeting Dear Members: This cooler weather feels good and makes e‘eryorrefceLlike fall is in the air. The rain that we received was welcomed too although some of us received more than others.

Although there are a lot of activities in the coming months, we hope all of you will be able to attend the next meeting of Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association of Chapter No. 9 on Sunday, October 26th at 2 p.m. It will be held at the National Hall, 3316 Roberts Cut Off Road.

The officers will report on the progress of our Chapter and the business that has been transacted since the last meeting.

Election of officers and committees for the coming year will be held at this time, also.

It having been the-practice at the last two meetings, there will be , three drawings of $25, each, to members only, who are present at this meeting.

We hope this will encourage more of you members to attend.

The ladies are asked to kindly bring pastries to go with the meal which is provided by the local chapter.

Since our last meeting, two of our members who passed away were Sister Christine Hvezdos and Sister Ida Foyt.

It was also brought to my attention that David Earl Roden, stepson of Brother Tirk, passed away recently.

We were glad to hear that Natalie Maly is at home after being hospitalized as was Mary Tesar who is teeling much better now See you all on October 26th.

The Czech Heritage Society Of Texas The (State) Czech Heritage Society of Texas would like to clear up a misconception. This society is non denominational. People of all religions who are interested in the Czech culture, herita g e, language and genealogy are welcome.

A Czech genealogy seminar was held on September 27th at the SPJST Lodge No. 40 in Hillje, Texas. It was hosted . by the newly -'formed Wharton County Ciech Heritage Society. Rev. Benton Thurmond gave the opening prayer and welcome speech.

Mrs. Marjorie Manila, president of the (State) Czech Heritage Society of Texas, presided over the seminar, announced the agenda and introduced the speakers. They were Leo Baca, Dorothy Bujnoch, Doug Kubicek, Albert Blaha, Annie May Gloeekner and Mr. Bujnoch, who spoke in the absence of Marilyn Hrncir.

A regular meeting of the Czech – Heritage Society of Texas was held at 1:30 p.m. State officers and directors present were introduced.

Leo Baca, chairman of the Educational Symposium that was held during the Czech Days , at the State' Fair, gave a progress report. Vice' President' Victor Peter explained the`benefits of belonging to a county chapter of the society: Marvin Marek of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas told of the goaK-Of CEFT in, obtaining funds for a Czech language chair at either the University of Texas or at Texas A&M University. The first reading of Roberr`Janak's'proposal membership designations - was given. concerns regular,' contributing and patron memberships. The meeting was adjourned at 2:30 p.m. and the seminar continued.

Mrs. Matula installed the officers for 1987 of the Wharton County Czech Heritage Society. They were Rev. ' Benton Thurmond, president; Edwin Hrncir, vice president; Jo Ann Fabrygel, secretary; Lisa Stancliff, treasurer; Laverne Bacak, reporter.

Directors were John P. Marek, Frank Midler, Annie Gloeckner and Lillia Peter.

A lunch was served by the SPJST Lodge No. 40 and entertainment was furnished by the Gulf Coast Czech Singers. One hundred twenty - eight people attended the seminar.

Our next meeting of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will be held on December 6th at the SPJST Lodge No. 29 Hall in Taylor, Texas. A seminar will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Czech Heritage Society of Texas members from Victoria who attended Czech Days at the State Fair were Mr. and Mrs. Julius Matula. Mrs. Matula, state president of the CHS of Texas, was one of the principal speakers at the symposium held in conjunction with the Czech Days.

Sincerely, Clinton Machann CESAT Symposium *** A musical group from Czechoslovakia which specializes in Czech and Moravian folk music will perform on Saturday evening, November 15th in Bryan, Texas. The folk orchestra, named Burcaci, will be accompanied by a dance troupe named Vlcnovjan, which will perform native Moravian dances. The orchestra will also provide music for ballroom dancing.

This spectacular musical and dance performance, in full folk costume and of a type which has never been seen in Texas, will be a Czechoslovak salute to the important Czech - Moravian heritage of the state. However, this is only part of a three - day program entitled Czech Music in Texas: A Sesquicentennial Symposium, scheduled for the Brazos Center in Bryan, November 14 - 16, 1986. Co sponsored by the Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas and the Brazos County Sesquicentennial Commission, the program includes lectures by prominent folklorists, musicologists, writers, and other scholars; panel discussions on the value and meaning of Czech music in the state; and performances of Czech classical music by concert pianists, in addition to appearances by popular polka bands, orchestras, choral groups, and dance groups from all over Texas.

The program will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Friday evening, with a dance by the well - known Texas - Czech band,the Vrazels,and will end Sunday night with a dance by the popular Jodie Mikula Orchestra. Among the featured performances on Saturday and Sunday will be those by the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra, the SPJST Lodge No. 88 Czech Concert Orchestra, the Seaton Brass Band, the Czech Choral Group of Houston, the Dallas Czech Singers, the Czech Singers of Victoria, the University Czech Singers, the Czech Folk Dancers of West, the Texas Czech Beseda Dancers, Norbert Blazek and the Texas Czech Folk Singers, the Gulf Coast Czech Singers, the Heritage Singers of South Texas, Bob Schlecte and Friends (polka band), and special "surprise" guests.

Individual performers of classical and folk music will include Markus Hanus, Michael Beckerman, John Novak, Zdena Salivarova, Kevin Hannan, and Barbara Dybala.

Among the speakers will be the Czech novelist Josef Skvorecky, who now lives in Toronto, the anthropologist Zdenek Salzmann, and several other Texas, American, and international scholars, such as Josef Rostinsky, Svatava Jakobson, James Leary, John J. Karas, and Calvin Chervenka. Bernard M. Gebala will moderate a panel of Czech music radio hosts on the subject of "the future of Czech music in Texas "– Helen Pavelka, Al Kozel, Alfred Vrazel, Rudy Sefcik and Lada Cerny. James W. Mendl will conduct a series of interviews (open to the public) with current and former Texas Czech bandleaders and members of their bands and families. This project is being coordinated with Joseph Janak and other researchers who are reconstructing the history of Texas Czech bands and orchestras. Exhibits of antique musical instruments, song books, and other artifacts will be on display.

A Catholic mass with Czech liturgy and music and Czech Protestant services will be held on the symposium site on Sunday morning.

Origins Of Moravian & Silesian Valachs [A continuation talk delivered by Kevin Hanna on October 3rd at SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas.]

By the 17th century the Valachs were no lon ger completely isolated from the rest of the population. The "Valachization" of the lowlands population was underway at this time. fhe Valachs play an important role in the history of 17th century Moravia.

Valach uprisings took place in 1621, 1626 - 1627 and in the 1640s. The Valachs were revolting a gainst the Hapsburg rulers and the feudal authorities. In 1643 Valachs joined with the invading Swedish armies against the Hapsburgs. This is a fascinating but involved story, which like most episodes in Czech history, doesn't lend itself to simplification. I won't be able to go into this chapter of Valach history any further. he Valachs brou g ht an entirely new way ot lite to mountainous Moravia and Silesia. This was the same way of life, shepherding sheep and goats in the mountains, that Valachs had lived or cent uries in lands to the east. The Valachs founded settlements which were inhabited by their families. Each spring the Valach left his settlement and took his herd to the mountains.

The Valachs were supervised by an ot hem' called "vojevoda." The duties ot the vojevoda were often somewhat similar to those of the "fojt," the mayor of the lowland village. The \ ojevoda was the intermediary between the nobility and the Valachs.

The vojevoda administered the laws and collected taxes, which the Valach paid for using the pasture lands and consumin g wood on these lands. In some places the fojt of a village also served as vojevoda of neighboring Valachs. The fojt had a permanent official residence, however, unlike the ojevocia. The vojevoda, who supervised groups of Valachs scattered 0\ er great expanses of mountains, \ cd a less settled life than the village tojt.

Each spring the vojevoda assembled all the Valachs under his juridiction and counted their herds. The Valach was assigned specific pastures and a "sala" according to the size of his herd: The sala was the mountain camp or residence of the Valach and his assistants. According to Davidek, herds of 500 sheep were found at 17th century salaks. Goats were also raised and later cattle. By the 18th century 20 - 40 head of cattle might be found on a sala. At the end of the season the vojevoda visited each sala:g to determine the growth of the herds. The Valach paid a tax of every tenth sheep and goat and every thirtieth cow.

Valach families residing in settlements paid a similar tax.

On the whole the Valach lived under a different economic and social system than did the peasant. The Valach law or privilege was often less burdensome than the feudal requirements which taxed the peasant of the lowlands. The Valach was proud of the relative independence which he enjoyed. We see that the Valach often took up arms when he felt that his rights were encroached upon.

With time the Valach assimilated into the lowland population. Actually since the Valachs were more of a dynamic force in many ways than their lowland neighbors, we might speak of a "Valachization" of the neighboring

peasant population. Davidek claims that the Valachs, though originally a small group, had the higher birth rate.

We know that the Valach had more land at his disposal than did the peasant. New settlements in the mountainous areas were populated by descendants of the first Valachs.

The Valach eventually adopted agricultural methods, just as the peasant adopted some of the Valach ways. The first evidence of a Valach becomin g proprietor of a "grunt," or I arm, dates from the 17th century. By adoptin g this way of life the Valach lost the privileges of Valach law and he became bound by the same obligations as the peasant. The villages of Moravian Valagsko, Lasko and parts of Slovakia were relatively poor, however. Farms in these regions could not compare with those in other parts of Moravia and Bohemia. Those parts of Mcravia, Silesia and Slovakia which were settled by Valachs were the poorest parts of Czechoslovakia.

We often associate the Valachs only with Moravian Valasko. The Valachs of Moravia Valasko played an important historical role there and they left an indelible mark on the development of the area. Yet we have seen that Valachs also settled in other areas. We find traces of the Valachs in Croatia, Serbia, Dalmatia, Sedmihradsko, Bukovina, Ruthenia, Poland, as well as in Slovakia, Silesia and the region of Lasko. For Moravians of Texas the Valach Mora settlement of Lasko -- of the areas around FrYdek and Freatat -- is as important as that of Moravian Valasko. ['he Valachs of Lasko did not become as visible a group as those of Valasko. Coal began to be mined in the area near Ostrava in the 19th century and various industries developed here. Lasko prospered with this and the importance of the Valach colonization of the region was in many ways overshadowed by the immi g ration of a new wave of settlers who came to work the coal mines and factories.

Moravian Valasko remained a poor, relatively undeveloped region, however. The Valachs there remained a prominent symbol of the region and the difficult way of life shared by its inhabitants.

The name Valasko did not come into common use as a name for the whole region of Moravian - Valasko until the 19th century. In some places the exact borders of Moravian Valasko are open to interpretation.

The well - known composition Lachian Dances by Lea Jan gek was originally entitled "Valachian Dances." Before the first performance of the work Jangek decided that his native village of Hukvaldy, which inspired him to write the piece, was more a part of Lasko than Valasko. He changed the name to Lachian Dances. This illustrates the confusion among 19th century Moravians about their correct national and regional identity. It was not until the 19th century that Valasko was commonly accepted as the name for the region. By this time the name Valach no longer, meant shepherd and it was used as a name for any inhabitant of Valasko.

We find the surname Valach in Tegin in the 17th century. This indicates that there were Valachs in this area at that time. Many Czech surnames, as is the case with English names; derived from occupational titles. Valach and Bga are examples of this The historian Davidek extracted the names of Valachs from the official documents of the Tegfn area He notes that in the year 1577 over 14 percent of the Tes'in population did not -.possess

surnames. These people, who most likely lived in the more remote areas, were known only by their Christian name. It was not until the 17th century that all of this population possessed surnames. This illustrates the development of surnames in areas settled by Valachs. In the case of the surname Bea, for example, we see that this name could have been acquired as late as the 17th century. A man who became known as Ba6a was probably employed as a bae"a or head shepherd. It he acquired his surname in the 16th or 17th centuries, there is very little chance that he was of Romanian nationality. From the Valach names which Davidek extracted, we see that most of this population was not Czech. Most of the surnames indicate some relationship to Slovakia, Poland, Ruthenia and areas to the east.

Among the Te§in - Valachs, Davidek notes some surnames which may indicate a foreign origin: Savor, Cech, Moravec, Nemec, Polak, Rus, Slovak and Turek. These particular surnames indicate some relationship to these areas: Bavaria, Bohemian, Moravia, Germany, Poland, Russia, Slovakia and Turkey. He emphasizes that among these, there is no surname which would indicate Romanian nationality. Among Moravians in Texas, we find similar surnames which denote some relationship with a foreign region. Slovak, Slovgek, Polaek and Rusnak are examples of this. These particular surnames in many cases may be related to the settlement of Valachs. Slovak and Polish names which are found among Moravians in Texas may also indicate a link to the Valachs. We find many such Slovak names in Ennis, Texas for example: Kraj6a, Dlabaj and others.

Among the surnames of immigrants From Lasko in Granger, Texas, we hind names that may indicate a Polish Valach origin: Najzer, Gajda and Kostka, l'or example. Some other relatively common names in Texas which probably can be related to the Valachs are Kalu2a, Hutka, Kocian, Orsak, Kulhanek, Hajdaek, Ronovsk, Valigura, Kolibal and numerous others.

In trying to understand who the Valachs really were and how they related to the Czechs and Moravians of Texas, it may be helpful for us to view all of the Valachs of Moravia, Silesia, Slovakia, Poland and Ruthenia as a single cultural group. These Valachs, who settled in parts of modern - day Czechoslovakia, Poland and Soviet Ukraine shared a common language until quite recent times. We can still speak of a common Carpathian folk culture which is evident today in these nations. It is of interest to note that the folk culture of north - eastern Moravia is not only one of the most interesting examples of this common Carpathian folk culture, but as ethnographers have suggested, this may be the richest folk culture in all of Czechoslovakia, The Valachs of Moravia and Silesia had their roots in lands to the east. The folk culture of Moravian Valasko, Lasko and the Tegin area originated in great part in lands to the east. For these Valachs parts of the Slavic East were culturally much more accessible than areas of Moravia and Bohemia to the west. Through his folk culture, folk arts, folk customs and through the dialects he spoke, the Valach of Moravia and Silesia shared strong cultural ties with the Valachs of Slovakia, Poland and Ruthenia. These dated from a time when no sharp national . differences separated the Slavic people of the Carpathian

region. Only in the 19th and 20th centuries did the Valachs develop national indentities which correspond more - or - less to the post - World War One political borders. In examining the Valachs, it is helpful if we picture all of the areas of the Carpathian re gion in modern day Czechoslovakia, Poland and the Ukraine as sharing a common folk culture.

We can also approach the Valachs with a Pan - Slavic outlook. Pan Slavism is an idea which emphasizes the cultural, historical and linguistic ties that bind the Slavic nations of Eastern Europe. Pan - Slavism developed in the 19th century. The first advocates of this idea were Slovaks and Moravians, but later all of the Slavic nations embraced Pan Slavism with varying degrees of enthusiasm. Besides the Slovaks and Moravians, important advocates of Pan - Slavism were found among the Russians and Croatians. Some individuals have rejected Pan - Slavism as impractical and utopian. The Pan Slavic idea has traditionally been very dear to the Moravians, however. One reason for the Moravians' enthusiasm for Pan - Slavism may be the cultural ties that linked Moravian - Valachs with Slavic lands to the east. It will be quite difficult for us to understand the Valachs if we confine ourselves to a study of a sin g le modern nation. By approaching the Valach question with the traditional Moravian - Pan - Slavic outlook, it becomes easier for us to understand the whole picture of Valach migration and settlement. A Pan - Slavic outlook helps us to understand a history and folk culture that is shared by several Slavic nations in modern Eastern Europe.

As should be obvious at this point, many questions about the Valachs remain unanswered. In tracing the origin of the Valachs we encounter as many myths as we do hard facts.

Unfortunately there is very little information available on the Valachs in the English language. There do exist several excellent articles and publications in various foreign languages that need to be translated to English. Let's hope that some means of financing this project will be found in the future.

As was the case among the Slovaks and Poles and other groups, many 19th century Moravians were forced to emigrate for economic reasons. Those Moravians who came to Texas came from the poorest parts of Moravia: Vsetin, Fran§tat, Hovezi, Valagska Polanka, from FrOek in neighboring Silesia. It happened that Valachs played an important 'part in the colonization of each of these areas.

Over three - quarters of Czech Moravian immigrants in Texas emigrated from areas which were orginally colonized in large part by Valachs. I'm not prepared to offer any type of estimate of the percentage of Czechs in Texas who may be descended from Valach colonists from eastern Slavic lands. It will be difficult, although not impossible, to determine this, due to the scarcity of documents dealing with early Valach settlers. By tracing villages of origin and examining surnames we can trace links to the Valachs. Many very obvious links between the Valachs and settlers in Texas are evident today.

I've found that the entire Valach question is fascinating. Researching the Valachs has shown me a new approach to the history and culture of Eastern Europe, in which there is greater emphasis on shared cultural traits than on the historial

I've found much that is to be admired in the history of the Valachs. Those of you here today who could trace your ancestry back to early Valach colonists have a great deal to be proud of in the Valach heritage. Those of us who perhaps have no direct link with the Valachs must recognize the important

historical link between the Czech communities of Texas and Valach settlements in Moravia and Silesia. I hope that one reward of the efforts put forth this year by the Czechs of Texas will be an increased interest in and further research related to the Valach colonists of Moravia and Silesia.

Dear Readers, [he monthly meeting of Lodge 24 Cyclone Youth Club was held on Tuesday, October 7, 1986 at 7:30 p.m.

President Christy Marek called our meeting to order. Rodney Posvar and Bradley Marek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. the roll was called by Melanie Zavodny. In attendance were 23 members, 2 adults Mrs. Jane Brugginan and Mrs. Nancy Posvar, also I guest Chad Bruggman.

Pauline Marek, assistant leader, assisted us through the meeting.

Treasurer Janet Macek gave her report. After all expenses were paid, our new balance was $515.93.

Nis month's social will be a Halloween party. It will be held on October 26th at Flag Hall beginning at 3 p.m. [here will be games and a costume contest. Everyone is invited to dress up and come out and have a super time.

We will go caroling to the Southland Villa Nursing Home in Temple. We worked on gifts for the residents on October 18th.

On October 28th the Float Committee and the mothers will meet at 6:30 p.m. at Flag Hall. Then, on November 4th they will meet again.

Our money - making project will be held in November. More information will be provided later on.

Our new Scrapbook Committee consists of Susan and Melissa Holtman, Janet Macek and Melanie Zavodny. Good luck to them!

Our meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m. The next meeting will be November 12th.

October birthday celebrants include Carl Macek (October 9th) and Melanie Zavodny (October 22nd). Happy Birthday!

The last monthly meeting of the Dime Box Youth , C1,,,b was held on Sunday, September 21, 1986 at 3 p.m.

President Susan • Spacek called our meeting to order.

There were 19 members and 2 social members present.

There were no minutes read due to the absence of the secretary.

The treasurer's report was then given.

We discussed having a youth dance.

Nominations for bands were Texas Unlimited and Texas Redneck Band.

We also discussed having a booth for the Dime Box Homecoming from 12 to 5 p.m. Eric Fritz made the motion and Monica Spitzenberger seconded it. We will have a dart throw.

We would like to thank Snook Youth Club for inviting us to a party on September 27th which was in honor of King John W. See III and Duke Ashley V ictorick Door prizes were won by Mrs. Kostelka, Mrs. Cottrell and Lamar Hervey.

We, the members of SPJST Lodge No. 9 in Snook wish to express our sympathy to the family of our departed sister OTI IDA KUBICEK, of Snook, who passed away on Friday, August 22, 1986, at the age of 76.

Mrs. Kubicek was born on 2 June 1910, in Snook, to Joe and Frances Sebesta Jakubik.

She married Tony Kubicek in Nelsonville on August 15, 1931. She was a homemaker and member of the Snook Brethren Church, member of Snook Christian Sisters, and a member of the Snook Extension Homemakers.

She also was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 9, Snook.

• Kubicek was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two brothers, Ed and Joe Jakubik.

Sister Kubicek is survived by daughter and son - in - law, Doris and Virgil Floyd of Rosenberg; son, Raymond Kubicek of Houston; four sisters, Rosie Spriggs of Galveston, Valina Sebesta of Danbury, Morris Minnie Sanders of Hitchcock, Bravenec of Houston; six grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, plus other relatives.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on August 25th at the Snook Brethren Church with Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating. Burial followed in the Snook Cemetery under the direction of Strickland Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Johnny See, Sherwood Rollish, Kenny Richards, Larry Kovar, Rayfield Slovacek and Alphonse Budnik.

May our departed sister rest in peace" and may her memory live among us forever.

Brother Cooper was a World War II :eieran, 90th Division, member of Woodland Lodge No. 1157, the Shriners and SPJST Lod ge No. 84, Dallas. He lived in the Houston area 1 or 42 years.

12/VESTNIK—Wednesday, October 22, 1986 and groom wore black tuxedos and red rose boutonnieres.

A reception and dance were held at the church hall. The bride's and groom's tables were covered with ivory organza. The wedding cake was four tiered, decorated with red roses and topped with a nosegay of red roses. It set 'on a water fountain base. The groom's cake was chocolate with a Texas A&M University emblem on it.

Diane Deily, sister of the groom and Peggy Gajdica, sister - in - law of the groom, served the wedding cake.

Music was provided by the Czech Mates.

The bride is a 1983 graduate o

Sherman High School and she graduated from Texas A&M University in 1986. She is employed as a programmer analyst by General Dynamics in Fort Worth.

A 1982 graduate of Plano Senior High School and a 1986 Texas A&M University graduate, the groom is employed as an accountant by Deloitte, Haskins and Sells in Dallas.

Following their honeymoon in the Caymen Islands, the couple is making their home in Arlington, Texas.

The bridegroom is a member of SPJST Lodge 130, Dallas.

Gajdica-Bednarz Wedding Suzanne Elizabeth Bednarz and John Patrick Gajdica were married on September 13, 1986, at 7:30 p.m. in a double - ring ceremony at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Duncanville.

Re\ erend Gale White, director of family life ministries for the diocese of Dallas, performed the ceremony. The parents are Jay and Colleen Bednarz of Duncanville and Laddie and Helen Gajdica of Plano.

Karen Birtchett of Duncanville was organist and Ronnie Gajdica of Bryan, brother of the groom, played the guitar. Soloists were Kim Buckingham of Sherman and Allison Sanders of Austin. Diane Deily of Plano, sister of the groom, and Travis Bednarz of San Antonio, brother of the bride, read from the scripture. Mothers of the bride and groom, escorted by the fathers of the bride and groom, lit a candle on each side of the unity candle.

The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a princess silhouette gown of ivory satin, embellished with French Alencon lace trim. The bodice featured a high Victorian neckline and a sheer yoke with a jeweled lace collar. Long Genevieve sleeves were complemented with beaded lace motifs and the cathedral train of Alencon lace had tiny seed pearl appliques. The bride chose a cathedral veil which was secured by a princess tiara of pearl encrusted Alencon lace. She carried a cascading bouquet of white sweetheart roses, stephanotis and baby's breath.

The groom wore a black Pierre Cardin tuxedo with tails, ivory shirt. black satin cummerbund and black bow tie. His boutonniere was a white rose and stephanotis.

Julie Bednarz of Dallas, sister of the bride, was maid of honor and Geralyn Kever of McKinney, sister of the bride, was matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Lori Bednarz of Dallas, sister of the bride, Marsha Krajewski and Jean Curtis of Sherman, and Becky Beazley of Dallas. They wore tea length dresses of iade satin and matching satin shoes. :Ds fitted bodice featured a rolled collar neckline, cascading to the back in a deep V, forming a bow at the waistline. They carried bouquets of red long stemmed roses and baby's breath.

Kristin Cooper of Arlington was flower girl. Her;dress was floor length, matching those worn by the bridesmaids. She carried a basket of red sweetheart roses and baby's breath.

Rodney Edge of Plano was best man. Groomsmen were. Ronnie Gajdica of Bryan, brother of the bride, John Laubacher of Richardson, John Zikos of Dallas, Bill Brooks of Plano and Paul Fazio of Newtown, Connecticut. Ushers were Travis Bednarz of San Antonio, brother of the bride, Mark Kever of McKinney, brother - in - law of the bride, and Scott Walker of Plano. Carlton Hitchcock of Sherman was candlelighter. World Shooting Championship Achievers. Connie Schiller from United States winning third place, Svetlana Demina from Russia [first place], and Michelle Rink from West Germany [second place].

Participates In World Championship In East Germany Connie Schiller has recently returned from. the 44th World Shooting Championships held in Suhl, East Germany.

Connie is a past member of the Brazos County, Texas 4 - H Sportsman Club, whose members concentrate primarily in shotgun shooting. This past summer, she received a special invitation to participate in an intensive shooting clinic for three weeks conducted by the Army Marksmanship Unit at Fort Benning, Georgia. During this time she was coached in mental training and an intensive daily shooting schedule.

In July, Connie completed in the U.S. Team tryouts at Prado, California where she won the Ladies' International Skeet Championship.

This qualified her to participate in the National Sports Festival in Houston,

Texas and also to represent the United States in the World Championships that were held in September„ In. Suhl, Gerniany, Miss Schiller was topped only by Russia's Svetlana Demina, and Michelle Rink of West Germany. After three days of intensive competition, Connie was tied for third place, with four other women. She won the Bronze metal in a shoot off.

There were 61 countries represented at Suhl, East Germany. This was a dramatic increase in competition over previous years.

Presently, Connie is a senior at Texas A&M University majoring in Animal Science, and will graduate in December 1986.

Connie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Schiller of College Station, Texas and granddaughter of Mrs. Agnes Schiller of Temple, Texas and Mr. and Mrs. John Mach of Axtell, Texas. The entire Schiller family are SPJST members of Lodge 35, Elk. --SP J ST--

Tam vpfedu je tabule. Na tabuli je slovo t eskoslovensko. Nalevo je velke okno. Na ste'ne napravo je obraz. Na obraze je mesto Praha. Vpfedu je Staromestske namesti. Na namesti je stard radnice. Vzadu napravo je feka Vltava. Na fece je lodla. A nahofe na kopci je PraiskY hrad.

2. When answering the question Kde je? (Where is ...?) we choose the preposition v (ye) in the meaning inside, or na in the meaning on the surface of something. The noun following the preposition is in the locative case.

Soft nouns of all three genders (types stroj, ulice, pisen, kost, more) form the locative by taking the ending -i. The type ncidrati does not change. E.G. Petr je na ulici, na mofi, na nadra21.
