*** We regret not being able to attend Czech Day at the Texas State Fair, Sunday, October 5th and heard that it turned out well, inspite of the drizzly, wet weather, The people responsible for all they did are certainly appreciated and deserve our thanks for the extra effort they put into the huge project.

To those of our members and readers who will still visit the fair in future days, are encouraged to go see the Czech display which, we understand, will be there until the fair closes October 26th. We are certain that you will not regret it!

*** Tuesday afternoon, October 7th, your editor attended the October quarterly Supreme Lodge meeting and listened to the deliberations on various subjects. At every quarterly meeting of the Supreme Lodge Board, the interest rates arc reviewed, discussed and, µcnerally, adjusted and you will also notice that was the case this time. The interest rate Universal Life remains at 10 percent, however, interest rate for Annuities and Mortgage have been: lowered some. Please see the rates and duration of them in the appropriate boxes pertaining to same.

*** Get flu shots now -- Individuals who are exposed to the general public, as well as those older than 70, and people with greater vulnerability to influenza because of other health problems are advised to get two flu shots as soon as possible.

Since it takes four to six weeks for the flu shots to become effective against the virus, now is the time to get the shots, said Dr. Douglas Hurley, director of the Scott and White Division or Infectious Disease, Associate Professor of TAMU College of Medicine.

Two shots are necessary this year because a new strain of influenza virus is expected to spread through the United States this winter.

*** Employment opportunities for -accountants, auditors, computer programers, analysts and other specialists in mathematics - related fields are.expected to grow much faster than the rest of the job market through the mid - 1990s, says a Labor Department report. Demand for economists is expected to grow at about the same pace as the rest of the market. The job outlook for data entry keyers should remain static. The 15 - page document "Computer and Mathemties - Related Occupations" describes trammg, earnings and outlook for such jobs.

Are you a member of a car pool that takes neighborhood children to school or school activities, such as football games? If so, you may want to check your liability coverage. Liability risks can increase significantly when you chauffeur other youngsters. The minimum liability coverage that states require of drivers is far below the amount necessary for adequate protection. In New York, for example,· the state minimum is $10,000 for injuries to one person, $20,000 for injuries to more than one person and $5,000 for property - damage liability.

Cash awards in liability trails now far exceed these amounts. In 1984, the most recent year with available figures, the average liability award in wrongful - death cases, including auto accidents, was $667,620, according to the Jury Research Service. '

*** The need for family members of patients with heart disease to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques was underscored by a recent study of 1,000 heart - attack , ictirns in Seattle, Washington. The study, by University Hospital and the King County Emergency Medical Services Department, found that the chances oť surviving a heart attack are twice as good if the seizure happens in a public place, rather than at home. lhe reason for the difference is that someone trained in CPR is more likely to be nearby if the attack occurs on the street. Of those stricken on the street, 27 percent survived to leave the hospital, compared with only 13 percent of those who suffered a heart attack at home. ·

*** With births at their highest peak in 20 years; more and more working parents are looking for decent day i: care arrangements for their new arrivals. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees has published a helpful · checklist for selecting a child · care facility. The booklet suggests, for example, that parents make sure the facility -- whether in a private home or in a large day - care center -- has been inspected for the safety of equipment, preparedness for fire and the presence oť lead paint or asbestos. *** Never give the ID number for your bank's automatic teller machine over the phone. That's · especially good advice for college freshmen, who are proving to be easy targets for flimflam artists on some campuses. ~t the University of Florida, for example, freshmen have been getting phone calls from a supposed bank representative who wants to confirm bank identification numbers, which are used to get money from the automatic teller machines. Once a student reveals the number, he or she may be faced with the fact that a lot of money, possibly hundreds of dollars or more, is missing form his or her account. Money stolen in this manner is difficult to retrieve, since there are usually no suspects and no witnesses.

News Release October 6, 1986 The Alvin Community College was recently gifted with an allocation for the 1986 - 87 school year for the promotion of Czech language studies.

Mr. Jerry Prochazka, District V Director of the Supreme Lodge, SP JST, presented a check in the amount of $800 to Linda Sue Chaput, Director of the ACC Continuing Education Department.

The Supreme Lodge of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas annually contributes various amounts

to assist ACC in providing

Czech promotional activities within the ACC District, to support the maintenance of Czech culture, history and language, and to provide classes in Czech at the College each fall and spring semester.

A Conversational Czech class is now 111 progress at ACC, and one will be available on the spring schedule. Mr. Bernard Pivonka is the instructor of these language studies.

On September 20th an excited group of members gathered at Lodge 15, Buckholts for the second annual SP JS r Straight Domino Tournament.

All participants and guests were treated to a day full of friendly competiuon, socializing and a delicious home - cooked meal provided

by Lodge 15.

As always in any contest, there are only a few winners, but in this case we feel that all who participated were winners. First place was won by Seaton Lodge 47 represented by Helen Janacek and Joe Kohut. In second

place was Floresville Lodge I 07 represented by Bob Bayer and Joe Pavliska. In third place - Houston Lodge 88, represented by Charles Veit and Perry Seeberger.

We wish to thank Lodge 15's officers and members for doing an outstanding job in hosting the playoff', the representatives from the participating lodges, tournament director; Bud Petty and staff who helped the day to run smoothly.

Lovelady Lodge 74 Meeting Om regular meeting or Lodge 74 was held at 7:30 p.m, Monday ť\ cning, October 6th at the new time ()I the month. We did not have a large attendance probably due to the time change of the meeting, but, alas! -­ another time change for our meeting date. Members.mark your calendars -­ The new date and hour change for Lodge 74 meeting is first Monday night or the month at 7 p.m. We hope this will be the last change in our meeting schedule!

The curtain has closed on the last act, the cast has taken its final bow and received its final applause. The stage is dark and patiently waits for someone to say "Five minutes until curtain time" when, again, it can come alive with the happy sounds of comedy and music. Will it be a Czech play or an English one? We will have to wait and see.

The "Divadlo" (Stage Play) is as much a part of our Czech heritage as is the Czech language, Czech style food and music.

On Sunday afternoon, September 14, between 150 and 200 people attended the presentation of the Czech play "Kos to zaridi" ("Kos Will Fix It"). Some came from over a hundred miles away. The play was presentedby

the Czech players of Hlahol Drama Club at Lodge Pokrok No. 88 in Houston. Prior to the play many enjoyed a dinner of baked chicken, rice and gravy, peas and carrots, salad and dessert. Between dinner and the play everyone enjoyed conversation, refreshments and fellowship.

I would like to share some of the day's activity with you. Even if you saw the play you might like to have an idea of what went on behind the scenes.

I arrived at the lodge at approximately 9:30 a.m. I was greeted with the delicious smell of dinner being · prepared in the kitchen, although I had just finished breakfast, the aroma made me hungry again. I was further greeted with a cheery "dobre rano"

(Good Morning) by Ernest Anders, who was busy supervising and helping clean and set up the auditorium. On stage Tim Kostom and Ted LaPesh were busy setting the scenery into its proper place, replacing burned out light bulbs in the seldom - used stage lights, etc.

One by one, the players started coming in and helping with the final preparations of the stage and brushing up on some of the rough spots in the play.

We all agreed that we would not eat a large noon meal and asked that some of the food be saved for us so we could eat after the plav, when our nerves returned · to normal.

Backstage we were provided with ice - water, saltine crackers, potato chips and light refreshments to help us overcome any hunger pains we might have. (Oh, why not admit it, some of our refreshments were more than light.)

At about 11:30 a.m. Rosalee Kostom began making up the actresses while Jan Schroif made up the actors.

Around 12:30 p.m. -- PANIC -­ "Where is our prompter?" "What will we do if she doesn't show up? Our fears were calmed when Svatka walked in almost as if on que.

By 1 :30 p.m. the actors were all made up and our director, Marie Kostomlatsky, gave us some final instructions. We were now ready to perform.

Several people came backstage to wish us well. Their visit and words of encouragement were appreciated and certainly welcome.

We , all had butterflies in our stomachs and as 2 p.m. approached, they were getting bigger and greater in number. At 2 p.m. we were told that there were still some in the dining area eating.and we were asked to delay our start for 5 or 10 minutes. It seems that the bell in the lobby did not work, perhaps we just forgot to push the button. (HURRAY, we got a 10 minute reprieve!) That was the shortest 10 minutes in my whole life.)

The play went on without a hitch, all of the actors did a fine job (at least that is what we were told). I might add that we did not make any mistakes, we simply, at the last minute, live on stage, re - wrote some of the lines in the script.

After the curtain closed on the third act, we were all introduced by Tim Kostom and received congratulations from all of the audience.

The butterflies were now beginning to disappear.

After about 20 minutes we all sat down together in the dining room and enjoyed our share of the delicious chicken, which everyone else had enjoyed at noon. During our meal I heard such phrases as: "Will we play it again?" "I hear they want a repeat performance," "Someone said Schulenburg wants us," "Maybe Dallas in November."

Perhaps we will do it, again, soon, while we still know our lines.

Our actors were Vera Cotrino, Marie Kostomlatsky, Joyce Bohuslav, Helen Kubicek, Jan Schroif, Gene Barcak, Ted LaPesh, Jerry Persan and Bill Malina. Our prompter was Svatka Link. Important Meeting ForLodge66 Dear Members: Waco Lodge 66 will hold its monthly meeting on Sunday, October 19th.

Houston Lodge 88 News Lodge 88 went on direct billing from the Home Office as of September 1st.

It took some time to transfer all the insurance records from here to there, so the September billing was a little late. Jerry Mikulas, the Supreme Lodge financial secretary and his capable staff, will handle all insurance premium billing from now on. Your local dues will be billed from our financial secretary's office here in Houston once a year. The local dues will remain at $6 per year. When you pay your local dues you will be issued a new membership card to be used for the various lodge activities, such as the cheaper dance tickets and the free barbecue dinner every summer. With over 9000 members, it is a big task to get all the information into the computer. If you think an error has been made on your insurance account, please call the Home Office or our local lodge office. A separate statement will be mailed on each account, so if more. than one family member is involved, just return all the sections of the statements to be returned and one check for the total amount due. The computer bills and stuffs the envelopes, not being able to keep families together.

The Texas Brew, a very good country /western band, will play in the Chandelier Ballroom on October 17th and The Phil Gray Orchestra appears on Saturday, October 18th. This dance is an evening - attire dance and the tickets are $15 per couple. On the following Saturday, October 25th, The Ellinger Combo, also known as The Central Texas Sounds.plays a variety of good dance music -- some country/western, some waltzes, and some polkas.

The big event of the year at Lodge 88, Czech Day, is Sunday, October 26th. A delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings will be served starting at 11:30 a.m. Dinner tickets are $4 and $2.50. The program starts promptly at 2 p.m., with the Parade of Costumes scheduled for 5 p.m., followed by the free dance with music by The Vrazels.

The Birthday Club Sisters will have their home - baked pastries for sale throughout the day. All pastry donations to their booth will be appreciated. The program will feature Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar as speaker, a youth club drill routine, and a sing - a - long with both Czech and English songs led by our song bird Helen Hegwood. Plan to spend the day at our lodge. It sounds like an entertaining day for one and all.

Lodge 88, Houston Lends Its Eyes To Others

It is so gratifying to know that these are still those who care.

Upon learning of the need for eye glasses from the director of the Community Service Center at the Houston Lighthouse for the Blind, the Fraternal Activity Coordinator of Lodge No. 88, Houston has started collecting used eye glasses from lodge members who have no further need after eye examinations reveal a need for change in their prescription.

This project has just recently started at the lodge and many probably have not learned of it yet, but it is quite surprising to know that thirty - five pairs of glasses have already been contributed for the cause to assist someone in seeing a little bit better.

It is certainly an asset to the Houston, Texas community to have such a fine organization as the Social Services Department at the Community Service Center, Lighthouse for the Blind, headed by Director Mrs. Mayme Townsend.

It is likewise an asset to Lodge No. 88, Houston to have such generous and thoughtful members who have already stepped forward to help others.

Lodge 142, Houston YC·Meeting Dear Readers: The youth dub oť Lodge 142 in Houston held their monthly meeting on Thursday, October 1, 1986. There were 9 youth members and 2 adults present.

We discussed our bowling party which we had on September 18th. We all really had a great time.

We decided to have a cake sale after our adult meeting on October 12th.

Lodge 180 Burleson Meeting Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our last lodge meeting was held on Tuesday, September 16th at 7:30 p.m. with our President Louis Grochoske calling the meeting to order.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read and the treasurer's report was also given. Both were approved as read.

Our get well wishes go to Joyce Russell who underwent minor surgery a few days ago and everything went well and she is feeling better.

Our District III ťali meeting was held on September 28th at Lodge 180 with a nice crowd attending. Everyone enjoyed the meeting and fellowship.

We were happy to have President Howard Leshikar and his wife, Mary, also Sid Pokladník with us at the meeting as I understand they were on a trip to Washington and had arrived back to Texas that morning. I thank all the sisters and brothers for helping.

Everything went smoothly and we all enjoyed the day. The kolache were very good. Thank you, Estelle.

The Nominating Committee has been busy trying to get together a good group of working people for next year.

Origins Of Moravian & Sílesian

Valachs (Talk delivered by Kevin Hanna as part of symposium The Movement of Czechs Across Texas on October 3rd at SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas.)

Several years ago I visited the community of Frenstat in Burleson County, Texas. Walking through the deserted cemetery, I spotted a tombstone. Like most of the other tombstones, it bore a Czech inscription. The surname on the tombstone, inscribed in perfect Czech, was Fědor. I suspect from recent research that this particular individual, like many early settlers in Frenštát, Texas, came from Frenštát in Moravia. What interested me about this tombstone and the individual buried beneath it was the surname.

Fědor is a Ruthenian and Ukrainian name. How did a man with a Ruthenian or Ukrainian name come to rest in the cemetery of a Czech community in Texas with a Czech inscription on his tombstone? I hope to present an answer to that question today.

Many of us have probably encountered names in Texas such as Bača and Rusnák. The origin of the word Bača, of course, is Romanian.

Rusnák is a word of Slavic origin, but it is most commonly found in eastern Slovakia and in the former Czechoslovak region of Ruthenia.

Rusnak means someone of Ruthenian origin or nationality. We may presume that each of the particular names I've just mentioned can be traced to an area of Czechoslovakia that was settled by Valachs.

Today l hope to present some of the theories about the origin of the Valachs and their colonization of Moravia and Silesia. I also hope to relate this information to what I believe are descendants of Valach colonists living in Texas. A great deal has been written about the Valachs, but unfortunately many of the theories about their origins conflict. No definitive study has yet been written.

Many historians have examined the Valachs only from their own particular national perspectives.

Romanian scholars have set out to prove that Valachs in Czechoslovakia were purely of Romanian origin. And then some Czech and Polish historians argue that there were no Romanians among the first Valach colonists. A problem in studying the Valachs is that we must examine the histories of several different nations: Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union, as well as the Roman Empire.

In some of these nations, the story ofthe Valachs forms nó more than an interesting historical footnote. The Valachs, of course, were shepherds.

Except for in eastern Moravia and a few other areas, they · were not a significant cultural force and they did not play an important historical role.

This is one reason that more attention has not been devoted to the Valachs.

Yet for Texans of Czech ancestry, the Valach question is quite important.

We might go so far as to say that the story of Valach migration and colonization ends in Texas, of all places. For Texans of Czech ancestry it happens that the Valachs are more than just an interesting historical footnote.

According to data compiled from a sample population by Robert Janak,

40 percent of Czech settlers in Texas migrated from the region of Moravian Valašsko in eastern Moravia. Another 40 percent migrated from the region of Lašsko, which straddles Moravia and Silesia, north of Valašsko. Both of these areas were colonized in part by Valachs. The main centers of Moravian emigration to Texas -- the Frenštát area, Vsetín, Hovězí -- were areas in which the Valachs played an extremely important historical and cultural role. We can say then that some 80 percent of Czech immigrants in Texas emigrated from areas which were colonized in great part by Valachs.

In the vocabulary of Moravian shepherds, the word Valach literally means "shepherd."

The Czech historian Davidek states that the name Valach was already in use in the Balkans in the 1 lth century. The name meant shepherd and Davidek states that it was used as an occupational title. Davidek states that it was never used to denote a single nationality of people. From the Balkans, the word was spread to areas in the north by the Hungarians. Some scholars insist that the word Valach is of Slavic origin.

One Romanian researcher traces the origin of the word Valach to the name of a Celtic tribe which inhabited parts of ancient Eastern Europe. He believes that the name came to be applied by the Germanic tribes to the Romans.

There does exist a link between the Romans and the Valachs, but this has thus far not been satisfactorily explained. Parts of modern - day Romania were settled by legions of the Roman Empire. The inhabitants of Romania were conquered at the beginning of the second century by the Roman Emperor Trojan.

This conquest was followed by a large scale settlement of Roman soldiers, who eventually intermarried with neighboring populations.

It's interesting that in Polish and some Slavic dialects the word for Italian and the word for Valach are identical. The modern Romanian language is closely related to Italian. One of the ancient provinces of Romania is Wallachia, as we call it in English, or Valašsko, as it translates to Slavic. There exists a Wallachia, or Valašsko, in both Romania and Moravia. Unfortunately the relationship between the Valachs of Moravia, the Romanians and the early Roman colonists of Romania has not been adequately explained.

Perhaps we are familiar with some of the terms from the vocabulary of Moravian shepherds: Bača, koliba, strunga, etc. These words are of Romanian origin. Oddly enough, however, these words which relate to shepherding are the only words of Romanian origin that survived among Valachs in Czechoslovakia.

No evidence exists that these Valachs spoke Romanian. One argument for the Slavic origin of the Valachs is that this group gave Slavic names to the settlements they established in Czechoslovakia. Their terms which relate to nature and geography are of Slavic rather than Romanian origin.

As a matter of interest and to illustrate the con fusion which surrounds the Valachs, we can note what the great Czech historian Fran.tišek Palacký thought about the origin of the Valachs. Palacky, who was born in Hodslavice on the border between Moravian Valašsko and Lašsko, believed that the Valachs were descendants of Gaulic tribes from areas to the west of modern - day Czechoslovakia. · The first Valach settlers in Moravia, Silesia and Slovakia certainly

represented a foreign element.

Scholars generally agree that the first Valachs were not native Moravians or Slovaks who migrated to the mountains. In all regions in which they settled, the Valachs eventually merged with the native populations living in neighboring lowlands. Yet the first Valachs, even if they did not represent a single nationality, were certainly of foreign origin.

The Valachs of Moravia are an important group historically. They eventually absorbed their neighbors from the lowlands. They introduced a strong Eastern Slavic flavor into the native culture.

The historian Chaloupecký wrote: "Valach colonization into Slovakia established a Russian cultural character there.

Likewise the Valach colonization of Moravia established there a Slovak cultural character." Even today Slovak influences are evident in Moravian Valašsko -- in the folk culture, dialect, etc. Polish and Slovak influences are visible in Lašsko , We can assume that these were introduced at least in part by Valach colonists. Yet the first Valach colonists in Moravia brought with them other than just Slovak intluences. With the Valachs of Moravia and Silesia, it does not appear to be a simple case of neighboring Slovaks and Poles migrating westward.

I'd like to offer my own thoughts on the origin of the Valachs of Moravia and Silesia. I believe that these Valachs were related in part to the Hutsuls of Ruthenia in the modern Soviet Ukraine. There exist three main cultural and linguistic groups among the Ruthenians, all of whom are generally called Rusnáks or Rusýns.

These three groups are the Lemkos, the Boikos and the Hutsuls. The Hutsuls inhabit the eastern - most parts of Ruthenia and small groups of them can be found across the border in neighboring Romania. The Hutsuls differ in various ways from neighboring Ruthenian and Ukrainian groups. Tradition has it that the Hutsuls are descended from Valach shepherds. It is not known to what degree these shepherds were of Romanian origin, but certainly the Hutsuls are culturally and geographically more closely linked with Romania than are other Ruthenians and Ukrainians. It is likely that the Hutsuls are descendants of a small group of Romanian shepherds who intermarried with a more numerous native Slavic population.

I believe that the Valach colonization of Moravia, Silesia, Slovakia and Poland began with small groups of Hutsuls. As this force moved westward, it absorbed other Ruthenian, Polish and Slovak elements. As such.the Valachs did not form a single nationality, although they spoke Slavic and had no trouble communicating with the Slavic populations of the lands through which they passed. I think very few if any of the Valach colonists of Moravia could be considered Romanians, even though a few bore Romanian surnames.

Those Valachs with Romanian surnames were probably the Slavicized descendants of Romanian shepherds. The Valachs of Moravia and Silesia were a population that was chiefly of Slavic ongm. Any Romanians among the Valachs had already been absorbed into the more numerous Slavic population. I believe that . this process of assimilation took place among the Hutsuls of Ruthenia.

Certainly it did not take place in Moravia or Silesia.

As late as the 19th century, much of

the population of Silesia, Slovakia, Ruthenia and other Slavic lands did not possess a fully developed concept of national identity. Living under the rule of Austria - Hungary, Prussia or Russia, many people of these areas were not conscious of a national identity. Many, if they had any thoughts about this question at all, would have identified their nationality and possibly also their language as Slavic. This was true even for parts of Moravia. This is illustrated by the name of the organization which erected the hall we are meeting in today: SPJST, The Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas. Those populations which lived in the mountainous and more remote areas were particularly prone to identify themselves chiefly as Slavic.

A Slavic Valach, if he traveled westward through the Carpathian Mountains, did not encounter strict national, cultural or linguistic borders.

Especially in the Carpathians, the different Slavic groups seem to merge together fairly easily and one can cross these borders without noticing drastic differences. A Slavic Valach probably appeared no more foreign to the native populations of Moravia, Silesia or Slovakia than did an inhabitant of the city of Prague, for example. At that point in history, all of the Slavic groups were quite closely related to each other culturally and linguistically.

Josef Macurek, one of the greatest authorities on the Valachs,' wrote about the Valachs of the Těšín area of Silesia: "It is possible to conclude that still in the first part of the 17th·century the Valachs of the Těšín area formed a very mixed ethnic group.. Their original teastern' roots were soon touched by intermarriage with the native lowland population. In the first half of the 17th century many new Valachs arrived from Poland. These Valachs had previously inhabited Polish/Ukrianian cultural spheres and for the most part these Valachs belonged to these Polish and Ukrainian spheres. Only in the first half of the 17th century did this group gel into something that was a little different and could be distinguished from the Valachs of neighboring Slovak counties.''

Similarly, the Valachs of Moravian Valašsko at this time emerged as a distinct group, with of course more and different Slovak influences than were found among the Silesian Valachs.

I've collected quite a bit of material dealing with the Valachs of the Těšín area and I'd like to outline the settlement of this group. The first arable lands in this area were settled and under cultivation by the year 1300.

The first settlers here were Slavic Silesians, closely kin to the Moravians to the south and the Poles in the north.

They were separated from the Slovaks by huge tracts of forested and mountainous land which would later be settled by Valachs. The first phase of settlement was completed by 1300 and the second phase, which involved the Valachs, took place between the 15th and 18th centuries. In this second phase, Valach colonists settled in the uninhabited mountainous areas which were previously considered uninhabitable.

The arrival of the first Valachs took place in the 15th century, when King Matyáš of Hungary ruled parts of Silesia and Moravia. At this time many Hungarian nobles acquired estates in Moravia.

The Hungarians were already familiar with the Valachs of Slovakia and Ruthenia, areas which were also under Hungarian rule.

Valachs had been settled in Slovakia

and Ruthenia for some time prior to this. The new Hungarian proprietors of estates in Moravia recognized the advantage of importing Valach colonists.

Davidek states that the first group of Valachs to settle in the Těšín area was quite small. As the value of Valach colonization was recognized, more Valachs were invited from lands in the east. Davidek states, however, that no more than one hundred original Valach families were settled in the Těšín area. The settlement of foreign Valachs in Těšínsko lasted no longer than 150 years. The first Valachs arrived in the late 15th century. One hundred and fifty years later this colonization ceased.

Although the number of foreign Valachs who settled in the Těšín area is quite small, the descendants of these first Valachs played an important role in the settlement of the whole region.

To quote Davidek, the Valachs were a healthy, tough and fertile people. He believes that their birth rate was higher than that of the native population living in neighboring lowlands. The Valach population multiplied. There was no shortage of uninhabited land in the mountains for the Valach offspring to settle. Descendants of the first Valachs would eventually settle all of the surrounding uninhabited lands.

Some of the Valach settlements were founded in relatively recent times.

From The Youth Leaders Lodge 6 Cottonwood YCProjects Dear Members and Friends: The youth club meeting was held on October 5th at 2:30 p .m. with a fair attendance. I wish more of you could attend our meetings. We also had one guest; come back whenever you can!

On October lst our youth dubbers donated cakes to the West Rest Haven. also donated items to the Tours Church Picnic and other charities.

The club members started a rest home project; if anyone has old Christmas cards, we can use them for our project. • There will be a Halloween party on October 31st, plus a spookhouse so everyone is invited to attend andhave fun. The club will furnish hot dogs and drinks. Everyone is asked to bring chips and sweets. Remember, the youth plan to have a good spookhouse.

October 12th the youth club and parents planned a trip to Six Flags.

Lanette Hykel was our October birthday celebrant. Kevin Dobecka brought a cake and it was good.

On November 9th our lodge meeting will start at l p.m.; youth dub meeting begins at 2:30 p.m.; also youth dub games and an appreciation supper for all who worked at our annual lodge picnic and Westfest booths, donated food items. or whatever you did to help out at both annual projects.

Start thinking about a Christmas program because it is almost around the corner.

Hoo's Who In Youth Evelyn Schwab has been an active member of SP JST for 9 years in the Centerville lodge. She has spent 5 years working with the youth club. She has helped organize for the District YAD and has served as a chaperone at camp.

Evelyn's two children, Jake and Tina, are also active members of the lodge and youth club.

Lodge 66 Youth Club Activities Dear Members, The month of September has been a very busy month for us. Sunday, September 14th,we went to Six Flags.

We all had a great time and enjoyed our trip very much.

September 21st we had our youth club meeting with 24 members present and 5 adults.

Our lodge was celebrating its 80th birthday. We had a small program which included a song by Candace Pavlicek and Katherine Warren, who sang the "Green Meadow Waltz" in Czech. Katherine Warren and Denise Pavlicek did a gymnastic routine.

Larry Yates brought the birthday cake.

Our plans for October include a Halloween party. We arc going to dress in costumes and have judges. If you have a friend you would like to bring. we would like for you to do so.

The party will be October 27th at 7 p.m. at the lodge.

On September 28th we had our District lil fall meeting at Burleson. I am the only one from our club who attended. I am glad that I went and would like to see more at our District III meeting.

Oddíl Dopisovatelů Tak Všelicos Anežka Houdková V pátek 3. října jsme s bratrem se byli podívat do síně řádu 84 SP JST, kde ·se večer konal ten symposium který se konal pro naše krajany v Tex­ asu když Texas oslavoval ten "Ses­ quicentennial". Už jsme dávno se nebyli podívat v síni řádu 84 a tak jsme si řekli, že už je čas jíti tam se sejít s přátely. Nejdříve jsme se sešli s panem A. Bláhou, kterého jsme poznali před lety na Shiller-Leshikar sejití, Byli jsme tomu rádi, že zas jsme ho uviděli a s ním si pomluvili. Pak on nám představil paní Marjorie (Mičan) Matulovou z Victoria, která jest předsedkyní toho spolku který se jmenuje "Czech Heritage Society" čili "Česk5· dedičný spolek v Texasu".

Rádi jsme jí a jejího manžela poznali neboť jsou velmi přátelští.

Pak později začali krajané přichodit, a pak to začalo. Nejdříve pan Bláha z Houstonu měl velmi pěknou a zajímavou řeč ohledně faráře Arnošta Bergmana, který tak dávno před lety přijel do Texasu z Moravy a co vše on dokázal. On totiž napsal dopis po příjezdu do Texasu a pochválil jak je možné zde prácí a přičiněním docíliti aby se naší krajané měli lépe než se měli za Rakouska před lety. Psaní šlo z ruky do ruky ve staré vlasti a následkem toho mnoho lidí z Valašska a jinde na Moravě se rozhodli jet do toho Texasu. Pan Bláha řekl pravdu, když sdělil, že kdyby nebylo jeho tak mnozí dnes by zde v Texasu též nebyli tady dnes. Pověděl nám o celém jeho životu a co vše se událo a též, že je pohřben na hřbitově ve Corsicana, Texas. Také byly přítomné jeho (pana Bergmana) vnučky a byly nám představené. Bylo to vše moc zajímavé, a líbilo se to lidem přítomným.

Pak pan Robert Janák z Beaumontu nam pověděl mnohé historické příběhy o historii našeho Texasu, což též bylo velmi zajímavé. O mnohých jsme před tím ani nevěděli a tak se to hodilo též.

Pak přišel na řadu pan Kevin Hannan z Dallasu. Ten měl pěknou řeč o Valašsku a jejich začátek nejen ve staré vlasti ale i v jiných okolních zemích a pak ovšem i zde vtom našem Texasu. Měl několik velkých map a vše vysvětloval. To velmi zajímalo ty, kteří byli z Valašska anebo jejich předkové byli odtud.

Naposled ještě pí. Matulová nám vysvětlila co ten spolek který se jmenu­ je "Česky dědičný spolek v Texasu" znamená a co vše míní podniknout aby se to naše krajanské dědictví se udrželo nadále pro ti, kteří přijdou po nás, aby mohli spolupracovat pro dobro všech krajanů. Měla velmi pěknou řeč a také se všem to líbilo.

Pak bylo po všem řečnění a lidé šli si koupit večeře které krajanky v kuchyni nám připravily. Já s bratrem jsme ale měli ještě jet jinám, tak jsme museli odřeknout. Až podruhé zas tam něco bude tak si to vynahradíme. Bylo to vše pěkné a zajímavé a sešli jsme se s mnohými přátely které jsme již dávno neviděli a člověka to potěší.

15. řijna-1986 V sobotu byl tam další program ale my jsme nemohli se zůčastnit , ale doufáme, že i ten se vydařil též. Dnes je nědele a hlavní den našeho českehó dne, jenže počasí je nepěkné, v noci pršelo a je zamračeno. Snad program na výstavě nebude tolik poškozen-­ vždyť to vše dalo tolik práce a starostí a tak je potřeba aby to dobře dopadlo.

Doufám, že pan Leo Bača prodal dosti těch knih ve kterých je seznam těch přistěhovalců kteří sem přijeli před le­ ty, ze staré vlasti do Texasu.

Očekává se, že v pondělí 6, října má přijít první ochlazení do D~llasu, již dněs je též už chladněji. Prý má být možná jen 50 stupňů. Já si pamatuji, že maminka říkala, že když bratr Vilém se narodil 6. řijna že v noci přišel takový severák, že jí bylo moc zima a že nemohla vzbudit otce aby jí přinést přikrývku a že musela čekat až do rána v té zimě. On bratr by měl (kdyby byl živ) už 76 let. Bohužel, už spí věčný sen přes 7 měsíců. Velice ho postrádáme neboť on nám tolik pomáhal se vším a je moc smutno po něm!

Tak zase se bude stavět velká budova, (snad? zde v Dallasu) kdy známá firma Wal-Mart se spojí s Cullum společno stí a postaví budovu 150 Jisíc čtverečních stop a bude tam nyní i leccos od jídla mimo všeho jiného. První obchod by se otevřel později v 1987. Bude prý třikráte tak veliká jak nynější Tom Thumb ob­ chod, ale ještě se nerozhodli, kde ta budova bude stát, a každý ten společník bude míti 50 procent všeho.

Prý asi 65 procent bude míti ta budova všeobecné zboží a 35 procent bude tam k dostání potraviny. Ta firma Wal­ Mart má více jak tisíc obchodů (v Arkansasu a 21 jiných státech) a ten výdělek její je přes 327 milionů dolarů za rok. Tak i když jsou časy všelijaké přece jen se bude dále stavět-- a snad se jim to podaří.

Ten Peterek o kterém jsem nedávno psala, že okradl svého otce a ujel a nechal nemocného hladem a žízní po celých 5 dní, je ve vězení a pod velkou zárukou. Bude asi soud a musí být potrestán za jeho ošklivý čin.

Nyní policie hledá člověka který je v podezření, že sekerou zabil tři ženy v Lancaster, Texas. Jedna znich byla 64 letá a slepá, jedna 37 letá a třetí byla 20 ti letá. Je to opravdu strašné když byly zabité sekerou, a on ujel pak pryč.

On nějak se nepohodl s tou jednou a zabil jí a pak zabil i ty dvě druhé též, ač mu nic neudělaly. Co vše se nyní děje, že člověk tomu všemu nemůže uvěřit.

Doufáme, že zločince brzy chytnou a potrestají dokonale za ten strašný čin.

Zase oznamovali, že asi 400 dělníků té USX čili spojené ocelářské unie se rozhodli jíti na stávku minulý týden ve středu zde v Dallasu a ve dvanácti jiných středisek. Ovšem, neví se jak dlouho stávka potrvá a jestli získají dělníci co si přejí. Snad se to vyřídí dobře.

Federální soud dal právníkům těch bratří Huntových jen pár dní kdy se má rozhodnout zda ten soudce "Barefoot Sanders" nemá být zúčasten soudnímu jednání anebo má být zvolen jiný soudce to soudit. Huntovi jej nechtí aby on mohl rozhodovat v jejich případu. Druzí zas chtějí aby tento· soud se konal v Dallasu a Huntovi chtí

aby byl v New Orleansu. To též nemůžou jaksi rozhodnout a asi se to ještě potáhne delší dobu když se jedná o moc velké peníze.

Automobilové· firmy podaly soud proti státnímu návladnímu Mattoxovi že ten zákon který nedovoluje prodej aut v neděli není spravedlivý když druhé firmy a obchody mohou prodávat vše co chtějí a jim prodávacům aut to zakazují. Tak nevíme, jak to vše dopadne, ale asi bude to dosti težké to rozsoudit.

Známá firma Neiman-Marcus, která prodává drahé a luxusní zboží, nyní vydala katalog k vánočnímu nákupu a jedna věc tam je opravdu zvláštní že mají na prodej koťata za 1400.00 dolarů jednu. Ty koťata jsou prý strakatá jako levharti čili "leopards" a už snad rrtají 100 objednávek pro někoho kdo obdrží tyto zvláštní zvířata-- prý to bude trvalý dárek a též to bude něco co každý nemá a také si nemůže dovolit. Tedy když mu zámožný přítel dá kotě k vánocům, tak bude to na dlouhý čas upomínat darce.

Ale kolik z nás by chtěl dát tolik peněz za kotě? Jistě ne moc jich, že ano?

Ten reporter Daniloff byl tedy propuštěn a je rád že je ve svobodné zemi americké. Jenže ti další zajatí a držení v Lebanonu ve vězení jsou velmi zlí na presidenta Reagana, že tomu Daniloffovi tak rychle vymohl jeho propuštění z Ruska, ale že pořád nic nedělá v jejich případě aby je vysvobodil též. Tak nevíme co bude s tim děláno, ale ovšem ti zločinci v Lebanonu chtí je pustit ale pod tou podmínkou, že jistí arabští zločinci kteří jsou ve vězení za to bombování a zabití tolika lidí, nezískali svobodu. A to je ovšem těžký oříšek k rozluštění, neboť případ je docela jiný neboť zbytečně zavraždili nevinné lidi pro nic a za nic a ti ovšem nemohou byt hned tak puštění. Myslím, že president má velmi těžkou úlohu a neví jak se zachovat aby všem vyhověl správně.

Letos prý státní výstava má míň všelijakých těch nehod jako krádež , přepady, vražed, pračky; poněvadž policie letos zvýšili počet policistů­ misto 50 policistů mají tam 200 jich aby dohlízěli na pořádek. Vše je lepši.

V pátek minulého týdne Židé začali oslavovat jejich vzláštní "svaté dni" které potrvají několik dní, a také konečně se všechny ty různé víry přece prý spojily dohromady a už prý nebudou dělati rozdíly mezi sebou.

Totiž nejpřísnější je ta "Ortodoxní" část a pak ta "Konservativní" a ta "Reformníje" mnohem liberální a není tak přísná ve všem jako ty druhé.

To znamená zě ve víře a v jídle nejsou přísní a mnohem lépe se s nimi může jednat. Nyní když jim stále hrozí bom­ bování a střílení od těch Moslímů a Arábů, tak musí býti sjednocení, aby se mohli lépe bránit. Svátky jejich trvají 10 dní a tak se budou muset činit a připravit se pospolu proti všem zločincům. Slíbili, že budou pod­ porovat jeden druhého!

V té Oklahomě opravdu mají nyní velmi špatnou situaci když tolik deště spadlo a asi 25 tisíc lidí se museli vystěhovat z jejich domovů a počkat někde jinde až zátopy opadnou. Budou míti velké škody neboť voda se dostala až dovnitř domu a tak zkazila nábytek,

koberce a mnoho jiného. Mnohé osady poblíže města Tulsa byly moc postiženy. Letos už těch špatných věcí bylo více než dost, a člověk musí politovat ty lidi kteří jsou postižení takto. Ještě když nikdo nepřijde o život anebo není poraněn, tak je to přece lepší, že ano?

Také nám sdělují, že náš president a ten Rus Gorbačev prý se sejdou v tom Reykjavíku v "Icelandu" už brzy a že asi možná schůze budou v domě který se jmenuje "Hofdi" a je tam prý strašidlo které straší. To by bylo cosi zvláštního aby dva vůdcové se sešli v takovém domě-- nemyslíte? Snad se jim nic ale nestane, aspoň doufáme!

V neděli bylo ráno ošklivé počasí a to jsem byla překvapená, že mě volaly dvě krajanky a chtěly přijít se podívat na mé Čsl. panenky a poznat mě. Jed­ na byla pí. Siptáková z Caldwell, Texas, a druhá byla až ze státu Iowa.

Tak jsem čekala že přijdou, ale pak když se vyjasnilo tak šly na výstavu a na Český den a pak asi jeli domů když to počasí bylo nejisté. Škoda, že se to neuskutečnilo; mohly jsme vespolek se pěkně pobavit. Možná že v 1987 při­ jedou zase a pak snad štěstí nám bude přát! .

Ctění bratři a sestry: Nás řád slavil naše 80 leté narozeniny a než jsme začali naši schůzi jsem poobědvali na tom nejlepším obědě co jsme měli za mnoho roků. Naše sestry se skutečně postaraly o mnoho dobrot a veřím, že každý byl spokojen.

Naši schůzi zahájil náš předseda bratr Ray Orsag ve 2:43 za přítomnosti něco přes 80 členů. Návštěvníci byli bratr a sestra Howard Leshikar, předseda Hlavní úřadovny, Sid a Justine Pokladník, ředitel třetího okrsku a Rudy J. Šefčík, redaktor našeho Věstníku, kteří byli srdečně vítáni a doufám, že nás zase brzo navštíví.

Po dobrém obědě náš předseda bratr Ray Orsag zahájil naši schůzi ve 2:43 za přítomnosti něco přes 80 členů a tito návštěvníci Dorothy Stacone, Chris Warren, Mary Traywick and Cotton Blume. Vlajky nastolili Larry Yates a Michael Warren a Billy Warren nás vedl při odříkání čest vlajce a odříkání spolkového hesla.

Pak byl čten protokol z minulé schůze a byl přijat tak, jak byl napsán.

Dále byly čteny dopisy a účty; dopisy se vyřídily dle potřeby a účty se zaplati­ ly.

Pak podala zprávu sestra Mary Alice Langlotz za naše dozorce, která jako vždy byla dobrá ale jedna věc mne také zarmoutila že bratr Frank Miller resignoval své řádové zaměstnání.

Bratr Miller byl náš knihvédouci po 25 let a skutečně byl jeden z těch nejlepsích. Poděkoval; jsme mu což si skutečně zaslouží a nřejerne hezký od­ počinek.

Pak podala zprávu sestra Gladys Yates za naši mládež a pověděla nám, jak se měli dobře v taboře mládeže (youth camp) a na výletu do šest

praporu (Six Flags) a také, že planují Halloween veselici a též žádala rodiče aby přivezli své děti do okrskové schůze, která bude v Burleson. V teto schůzi se každy přiučí.

Pak podala zprávu sestra Libby Par­ ma za náš "Trust Fund"; pověděla nám, že sestra Jeanette Smith darovala $15 na památku jejího manžela bratra Silas Smith. Dále řád ji daroval dalších $50 z "Bingo Fund" za což poděkovala.

Pak podala zprávu sestra Ruby Or­ sag za zábavní výbor a pověděla nám, že v říjnové schůzi budeme mít "hot dogs," chili a sýr a žádala sestry o přinesení sladkosti, tak nezapomeňte.

Pak podala zprávu Sestra Jeanette Smith za náš "Fraternal Fund" a přečetla několik děkovných dopisů. Při tom jsme měli diskusi ohledně jaké procento musí bingo darovat a rozhodli se, že nase bingo daruje přes 53 procent.

Pak podala zprávu sestra Leona Nors za nemocenský výbor; řekla nám, že poslala pozdravní karty těmto: Agnes Mazanec, Bertha Dawson, Roland Webb, Joe Kozlovský a Lee Reich; dále, že poslala soustrastné kar­ ty těmto bratrum a sestře Ed Mazanec st. a bratru a sestre Charlie Mueller, pak nám přečetla několik poděkovných dopisů.

Pak promluvil bratr Geo. Pauling a rozdal na tisknuté papíry ku studování našich řádových stanov, že v příští schůzi stanovy s novými zméname budou přijaté.

Pak zavolal bratr Orsag bratra Millera a daroval mu plaketu s hodinami za jeho 25 let poctivé práce což si zasloužil neboť bratr Miller vždy konal svoje povinnosti .\ nejlepšímu zdaru našeho řádu a já tasé ti děkuji za tvou práci.

Pak byl zavolán bratr Frank Parma a bylo mu děkováno. za jeho práci kterou vždy vykonal pro náš řád což si také zasloužil neboft jeho práce vždy byla výborná.

Pak byla obnovena diskuse, aby jsme měli každý měsíc besední večírek a v dobré náladě jsme se usnesli aby jsme takový večírek odbývali druhé úterý každý měsíc.

Pak promluvil k nám bratr Rudy Šefčík, redaktor Věstníku. Řekl nám, že nám gratuluje k naší 80-lete schůzi našeho řádu a dále nám řekl o tak zvaném (CEFT) což je "Čzech Educa­ tional Foundation of Texas" a má za ukol sebrat okolo půl milionu a založit

českou stolici na naší universitě. Je to skutečně něco co by nám přineslo mnoho dobrá. Universita, která dostane tu stolici také da půl milionu a úrok (interest) z těch peněz se budou platit výlohy českých studií kdyby jenom jeden student studoval. Prosím vás otevřte své srdce a darujte dle své možnosti za což vám děkuji.

Pak náš předseda Ray Orsag požádal sestru Leshikarovou aby přišla k podium a daroval ji věnec 150 narozenin Texasu za což mu poděkovala.

Narozeniny v září měly sestry Lisa Trefny, Annie Hanuš, Mary Vrána a Ruby Orsag a bratři Ira Niswanger, Jessie Briggs, Tony Glatter, Michael Warren, Robert Seith a Pat Wright.

Zazpívali jsme jim "Happy Birthday."

S tímto byla schůze ukončena a prosím vás aby jste se dostavili ve velkém počtu do příští schůze neboť budeme hlasovat o přijmutí zmén našich řádových stanov a to je důležité.

Náš Zalov Řád č. 88. Houston Važení čtenáři, Se smutkem v srdcich oznamujeme, že v patek 26. září 1986 v odpoledních hodinách, po delší nemoci, zemřela Miluše Kovandová.

Byla dlouholetou členkou českého ochotnického divadla "Hlahol" u řádu 88. v Houstonu. Miluše nebyla členkou SPJST, ale kdykoliv se hrálo divadlo ani se režiseř divadla nemusel ptát a už Miluše řekla ANO, tak měla ráda tu svou mateřskou řeč a aniž by se dožila a mohla se do té české země podívat na dcerku a vnoučata, které vůbec neviděla.

Miluš, odpočívej v pokoji. My všichni, co jsme tě znali tě nikdy nezapomeneme! Kdykoliv budeme hrát české divadlo, budeš v našich srdcích hrát s námi!

Astronomická tradice Na každých 100 000 obyvatel Československa připadá jeden astronom.

Je to vysoce nad mezinárodním průměrem.

Většina specialistů působí v Astronomickém ústavu Československé akademie věd v Praze a jeho observatoři v Ondřejově • (Ondřejov) ve středních Čechách.

Astronomie má v Čechách dlouhou tradici. Z vědců staršího období se o světový vývoj oboru zasloužil Tadeáš Hájek z Hájku (1525-1600), který přesným měřením dokázal, že nová hvězda, která se v roce 1572 rozzářila v souhvězdí Kassiopeje, je skutečným vesmírným objektem. Svým osobním vlivem dosáhl i toho, že jeho přítel Tycho de Brahe (1546-1601), tehdejší nejlepší astronom-pozorovatel, nalezl útočiště v Praze na dvoře Rudolfa II (1552-1612), když ztratil možnost pracovat doma v Dánsku. Do Prahy pozval i německého astronoma Johan­ nese Keplera (1571-i630), který zde na základě vlastního pozorování a pozorování Tycha de Brahe, se kterým spolupracoval, objevil tři zákony, popisující pohyb planet kolem Slunce.
