Our members and readers are urged to keep the extended Czech Day (October 3rd, 4th, and the "Big Day" Sunday, October 5th) in mind and try to attend - ESPECIALLY Sunday, October 5th!

Our members and readers are reminded of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas' (CEFT) effort and desire to establish an endowment "Chair" for the purpose of teaching the Czech langua ge either at the University of Texas in Austin (UT) or A & M University in Colle ge Station.

A total of $500,000 is being sought to be met by matching funds from the University (another $500,000) for a total of one million dollars ($1,000,000). The University of Texas has been teachin g the Czech language since 1914 and they need help; this would be the answer.

Unless Congress comes to the rescue, the amount that medicare patients must pay for the initial day of a hospital stay is to go up to $572 on January 1st. That is an $80 jump from the current deductible. The Health Care Financing Administration has announced plans to go ahead with the increase, but the House and Senate have passed legislation that, in 1987, would hold the first day's charge to either $500 or $520. The two houses must now reconcile their differences on the maximum. Medicare, the federal health - insurance plan for 30 million elderly and disabled Americans, pays all hospital bills -except for the first day -- through the 60th day of a stay. *** The best time to call and get an answer from one of the Social Security Administration's 34 telephone service centers is after 11 a.m., during the latter part of the week, and in the middle part of the month. At other

times it may be almost impossible to get through. According to a new study by the General Accounting Office, more than a quarter of 4,044 random calls made to the centers were disconnected, received a busy signal or were put on hold. Telephones at the centers -- which were set up to relieve local Social Security offices or routine inquiries -- were generally busiest on Mondays, in the early morning and at the start of each month, when checks are due. ***

SPJST 1986 Production Soars; Volunteer Sales Total $24 Million Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) sales representatives, all of whom are volunteers, have produced a record breaking $24 million in life insurance sales during the first four months of 1986.

According to SPJST Vice President Bernard M. Gebala, universal life and single premium whole life plans accounted for most of the activity.

Mr. Gebala said, "I am extremely proud 01 the accomplishments of our volunteer sales force."

Mr. Gebala said a change in bylaws, which permitted the development of a universal life product, and the cooperation of home office staff were important to the production level.

Once the plan was approved by the SPJST Supreme Lodge, the services of the Batle y; Company, Indianapolis, Indiana, were contracted to assist in formulating a sales approach that would be feasible and productive. The pro g ramming was done by United Systems and Software, Altamonte Springs, Florida. The universal life plan was developed by John Agee, consulting actuary for the SPJST. "We are extremely pleased with our universal life plan," stated Mr. Gebala. "We are very proud of the fact that a society our size developed the entire program from A to Z and that the outstanding results are evident so quickly."

In particular, he noted that the coordination between the financial and insurance departments facilitated the establishment of computer programming to process the new sales.

Mr. Gebala anticipates substantial growth in the future "if the sales representatives continue to give us the time needed to scat."

Lodge 4 Celebrates Family Day Dear Members: Our lodge held its annual Family Day on Sunday, August 17, 1986 at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville.

A delicious fried chicken dinner with trimmings was served at noon.

President Annie Vahalik gave the meal blessing.

A short meeting was held with President Annie Vahalik presiding.

Pledge to the flag was recited and there was a moment of silence for all our departed members. Gaynell Chudej of the Resolution Committee read resolutions of sympathy for our departed members, Emil Trojacak and Victoria Brown.

The president welcomed everyone to Family Day and thanked them for coming. She recognized our guests, District VI Director Matt Vanek and wife, Henrietta of Victoria. Due to Family Day, a motion was made to dispense with the ordinary business.

President Vahalik then thanked the committees and everyone who helped make the day a success. Committee chairmen were: Kitchen/Sodawater -- Evelyn Holy Tickets -- Helen Zabransky and Hilmer Galetka Entertainment -- Gaynell Chudej and Annie Vahalik Dominoes -- Erwin Holy.

Henry Muenster for donating the beer as he has done for many years and Milton Haas, and crew for preparing the fried chicken, Mrs. Albert Kahanek and Matt and Henrietta Vanek for donating door prizes, plus those who brought pastries served with dinner.

Brother Vanek spoke to the members about the happenings in SPJST. He also reminded the members to attend the District VI meeting on September 28th in East Bernard. He encouraged everyone to visit the SPJST Museum in Temple. In behalf of our lodge, President Vahalik presented Matt Vanek an old adding machine used by our lodge for many, many years to be placed in the SPJST Museum.

The meeting adjourned and the rest of the afternoon was spent visiting and playing games, refreshments were served. A surprise walk was enjoyed and a "42" Domino Tournament was held with Hilmer Woytek in charge and 6 teams taking part. Winners were Mrs. Selma Grones and Mrs. Treptow.

The youth club money - making project winners were Evelyn Holy, Elrose Muenster and Irene Barcak.

Door prize winners were Jean Zak, Joe Balusek, Johnnie Zak, Joe Siptak, Adrienne Voskamp, Tramer Woytek, Gaynell Chudej, Edward Wagner, Verline Mikush, Mrs. Jim Kutach, Julius Galetka, Ida Neubauer, John Galetka, Oscar Koerth and Helen Zabransky.

There was no meeting in September due to the Vestin Picnic and Social on our regular meeting date.

Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, October 12th at the Grant Building beginning at 2 p.m.

Refreshments and lunch will be served.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Meeting Dear Readers: Our September meeting was called to order by President Barbara Macek; all officers were present.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flag Bearers Harold Vanicek Jr. and Paul Macek. The members stood for a moment of silence for our deceased members.

The minutes of our last meeting were read and approved.

Committee chairmen gave their reports and all were in good standing.

The board has rescheduled a work day for October 15th which is on a Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is asked to come and help; please bring your tools and paint brushes.

Domino players from Lodge 24 who will be attending the playoffs are Charlie Bartek, Marvin Wilde and Billy Smetanka; we wish you all lots of good luck.

Birthdays in September are Margaret Mikeska, Charlie Waits and Doris Vanicek. Anniversary celebrants are Doris and Harold Vanicek, Bill and Linda Smetanka, Jerry and Louise Zavodny and Shirley and Charlie Waits. We hope you all had a wonderful day.

At our October 11th dance door prize will be given, so come on out and see if you can be a winner.

There are plans to start a Czech Festival in Temple; the first one will be held on November 23rd at the Frank Mayborn Center in Temple. There will also be a variety of foods and other activities.

President Macek appointed Margaret Mikeska as chairman of the Salary Committee, assisting her will be Johnny Chervenka and Louise Zavodny.

Well, believe it or not, Christmas is really just around the corner; we have set December 14th as the day for our Christmas party. At our next meeting, we will decide what we are going to have to eat and drink, so keep that Sunday evening open and plan to attend.

Right behind Christmas is New Year's Eve, and we will have Jerry Haisler and the Melody Five playing.

The cost will be $7.50 per person; that includes, hats and horns, blackeyed peas, along with great music. We will have reservations; to get tickets in advance call Louise Zavodny -- 985 2556 or go by Red Ranger Store.

For those of you who are going to the State Fair with us, we will be going October 5th from the old Temple bus station, please be there between 6:30 and 7 a.m., the bus leaves promptly at 7 a.m. We hope to be home around 8:30 p.m. Drinks and food may be brought on the bus; anyone who wants to bring their lunch and come back to the bus and eat, may do so, be on time!

Our next monthly meeting will be on Tuesday, October 7th at 7:30 p.m. The date was changed due to other community activities. See you then.

28 East Bernard Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: Lodge Karel. Jonas will hold its October meeting on the 5th even though the District VI meeting was last Sunday. The agenda will cover this meeting and other scheduled items.

A gathering, after, the business

meeting, will take place. The usual luncheon will not be served, since most of the lodge sisters, who attend the meetings, gave food for the District VI luncheon. Some kind of non alcoholic drinks will be available though.

The September meeting started on time and lasted only 38 minutes. It has been many years since this month's meeting was held on the scheduled first Sunday, September 7th. Usually, the first Sunday falls on the Labor Day Weekend and, due to the home rule on meetings, the meeting is moved to the second Sunday. There was very little business and the' reports were taken care of quickly, so the meeting was over in a short time.

Sister Julie Janik won the door prize.

A "Committee of the Whole" was formed immediately after the business meeting. This was done to make the .final plans be known for the luncheon after the District VI fall meeting.

The regular luncheon, after all of the meetings, was rather somber and quiet although there was plenty of food on the table. Sisters Kortis, Janik, Luquette, Nezval and Haverda made this possible.

35 Elk Meeting

Our meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz at 3 p.m. on September 14, 1986, with 23 members present and 5 visitors. We would like to welcome our visitors, Summer Smith, Marie and David Brown from Terrell and Jeff Parker and Beth Pavelka.

The minutes of our previous meeting were read and the treasurer's report was also given. Both were approved as read.

Congratulations to our youth club and all the entries at the State YAD on August 17.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Rosemary Banik and Michael Tierce.

Committee reports were given by Dawn Pavelka, Sonny Pavelka and Henry Breitkreutz. It was voted on and passed that in the next month we would try radio advertising.

New drinking laws were discussed.

This is a hard law for the 19 to 21 age group to accept; but I am sure with the young crowd we have coming to Elk, we should not have that many problems.

On November 11th there will be an appreciation dance for Jim Lewis. This will be in thanks for all who helped re elect him county commissioner.

The adult door prize was won by Johnny Stuckley and youth prize by Wendy Whitby.

President Henry Breitkreutz appointed Sharon Tierce and Barbara Pavelka on the Nominating Committee.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned to a chicken dinner.

Lodge 40 Donates To Worthy Causes The El Campo - Hillje Lodge 40 meeting was held following Monday night bingo on September 14th.

President Rita Vanek called the meeting to order. Kim Kacal led the Pledge of Allegiance.

A minute of silent prayer was observed in memory of Angeline Kosler and Annie Kopecky. Secretary Laverne Bacak called the roll of officers and trustees. Treasurer Madeline Shimek presented a capsuled treasurer's report.

Hall Manager Bennie Reck had no report. Youth Leader Mary Ann Karasek reported on youth activities and fund raisers.

Welcome to new member Thomas D. Kana. The next district meeting will be held in Hungerford on September 28th. Volunteer help will be needed for help with the upcoming all day Czech Genealogy Workshop. Also cake and other dessert donations will be needed.

Donations of $150 each will be made to the El Campo Fire Department and the Louise Fire Department. A $50 donation will be made to the Wharton County Library for postage for Czech language books.

Copies will be available of the Alcoholic Beverage Code book for members who need them.

Meetings are to be held on the third Monday night following bingo until further notice.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our last lodge meeting was held on Sunday, September 6, 1986,at 2 p.m. with Lodge 47 President Jerry Pechal calling the meeting to order.

Heidi Schroeder and Tracy Klusacek led the assembly in the Pledge to the flag. We held a moment of silence in memory of Brothers Jim Edward Mayes and Jerry D. (J.D.) Chlapek, Jr. J.D. had been active in lodge activities for many years, being an auditor, trustee and chairman of the board, kitchen chairperson, helped with cooking at Christmas and other dinners, and very regular at lodge meetings until illness prevented his presence. He shall be missed and so will Brother Mayes. Our deepest sympathy to the bereaved families, and may we honor these brothers' memories forever.

Visitors recognized were Ann Balusek, Carol Pechal, Gertrude Kahlig, Lonnie, Olga and Freddie Schroeder; you have an invitation to come again.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers and sales representatives. The minutes of our previous meeting were approved as read.

Correspondence included a thank you note from J.D. Chlapek family for flowers from the lodge and trustees for the funeral service; a donation of $20 to the Memorial Fund in memory of Brother Jerry Trampota; $20 in memory of J.D. Chlapek, Jr. by Willie and Adeline Kohutek; and a letter concerning the Symposium of Czech Music to be held in November at the Brazos County Center in Bryan.

On the sick list for August were Brothers J.D. and Edwin Chlapek, Edmund Jeske, Albert Mihatsch, John Frank Tucker; also Sisters Millie Lesikar, Shirley Patterson and Albina Dueser. Brother John Frank Tucker has passed away since the meeting and J.D. Chlapek on August 23rd.

President Pechal reported on repairs, insurance and that the Rules and Regulations' changes are to be picked up, read and brought back to the next meeting for voting upon. The Straight Domino winners from Lodge 47 were Brother Joe Jim Kohut and Sister Helen Janacek; Saturday, September 20th they won the State Title of Champions of Straight Domino Tournament.

Congratulations! The "42" winners from Lodge 47 are Brother Wallace and Sister Elsie Jez. Good luck!

The chairpersons' reports were given plus the officers' and trustees' reports.

The audit is set for Friday, October • 3rd at 7 p.m.

In old business we appointed Sister Vallie Chlapek to serve the remainder of J.D.'s term and Brother John Hruska to serve on the Audit Committee in his place.

Youth Leader Rosie Craft gave a report -- Nineteen members and four visitors were present. Laura Gibson won a first place trophy at State YAD. New business was the appointment ot Brothers Frank Klinkovsky, Henry Mares and Anton Vitek to the Salary Committee. They will have a report in the October meeting. Wallace Jez was selected as a sales representative from Lodge-47.

Since "Grandparents' Day" was September 7th, President Pechal requested all grandparents to stand.

The majority at the meeting were grandparents.

Brother Klinkovsky gave his report on the District II fall meeting and fun carnival for all ages. Since this has passed, I'll report that 210 members and 13 guests were present, with a good time had by all. Everything went smoothly and the supper topped the day off deliciously. Thanks for coming!

Birthdays for September were Sisters Annie Jakubec, Elsie Sodek, Mary Reznicek, Dorothy Morris and Frances Hejl, also Brother Emil Hejl.

Activities At Ennis Lodge 135 Annual Dinner/Charity Project

Sister Stacie Hejny, wife of Past President Joe B. Hejny, was present to enjoy and help with the festivities.

Houston

We'll start out with the good news first this week. Entertainment Chairman Brother Harley Cox is at home recuperating after his two major surgeries. He'll need plenty of rest and relaxing to get his strength back after his hospital stay. We all wish him a speedy recovery and continued good health.

Franklin and Almedia Bravenec, Jake and Louise Jacob, Bernice and Enos Wessels traveled to the northwest and that area in Canada on their 10 day vacation trip. They flew to Great Falls, Montana and then proceeded by motorcoach through Glacier Park, crossing the Continential Divide and on to Lake Louise via the Trans Canada Highway. This highway is the world's longest, going from the Atlantic Ocean cross country to the Pacific. After spending some time at the Chateau Lake Louise Hotel, they went on to Jasper National Park where they saw many ever g reen forests, blue green water, and Mt. Victoria with its massive hanging glaciers. The highlight of this area was the snowcoach ride on the glacier. They viewed Banaff National Park and Calgary where the 1988 Olympics will be held before heading for home.

Doris and Henry Knapick are back home from their 3 - week camping trip through northern Florida. They stayed along the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, drove on to St. Augustine, Florida, where they stayed several days taking in the many historical sights before heading to Disney World and Epcot.

After staying in that area for 6 days, they headed for home with stops in Jackson and Natchez, Mississippi where they toured some of the old plantation homes. In Vicksburg National Cemetery, Doris found the gravesite of one of her Talcott ancestors who was killed during the Civil War in 1863.

To continue the series of officers' features -- this week it's Lynn Ptlughaupt's turn. Lynn was born in Houston, the youngest of three children to Josephine and Leander Ptlughaupt. His brother, Larry, lives in Houston, and sister Carol Goedke resides in Spring, Texas. Lynn graduated from Reagan High School where he was listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students. He graduated with highest honors and was awarded a Jessie H. Jones Scholarship. He is currently a senior at University of Houston majoring in Accounting and plans to get his CPA degree. Lynn is a lifelong member of Lodge 88, belonging to our

SPJST Lodge 135 Ennis held their annual dinner which was well attended by members and guests.

Fifty - year membership pins were presented to nine Lodge No. 135 members during a special ceremony.

The 50 - year pins were presented by Lodge President Tom Valek, Lodge Secretary Sylvia Laznovsky and SL Secretary/Treasurer Leonard D. Mikeska.

Lodge 135 Sales Representative Larry Laznovsky discussed the new SPJST Universal Life Policy, an exciting new interest sensitive plan and the SPJST Annuity Program.

A prom-am on Child Abuse Prevention was presented by Mary Jenkins of the Ellis County Child Protective Services. A project and cakewalk followed the program for the benefit of the child abuse prevention charity. The fund - raiser was directed

142 Houston Meets

Our lodge meeting convened at 2 p.m. All members and guests stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of our departed Sister Silvia Kelarek. May she rest in peace.

The minutes from our previous meeting were approved as read after Secretary Alice Jochen held roll call of officers. All officers were present for the month of September.

We are happy to report two new members, Shanna Caka and Laura Kopecky, signed up by Brother Sidon Tumis.

All other officers and committee reports were read.

We had no youngest member under 16 years old who had not previously won to receive a prize, so the prize went to H.J. Ognoski -- oldest member present. Door prizes went to Henrietta Veselka, Robert Kieschnick, Lydia Froehlich and Sidon Tumis.

The $60 attendance prize went unclaimed due to the absence of Laury Ann Banks. The next month's prize will be $70; come out and join our meeting because you could be the lucky winner.

177 Makes Many Contributions Lodge

President Otis Beck called the September 9th meeting of Lodge 177 Academy to order at 7:30 p.m.

All officers were present and everyone recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Beck asked if anyone was known to be in the hospital or sick at home.

Minutes from our last meeting were read and approved.

Correspondence was from the Academy Elementary School thanking our lodge for the new piano given to the elementary school. (Kids, this piano was donated and bought from the Bingo Fund. Larry Bland was able to purchase this $4,500 piano for $2,312.) A thank you came from the American Red Cross, Cecil and Minnie Lagrange, the March of Dimes asking for our usual donation (it was decided to give $50 from bingo), and a letter from SL President Howard Leshikar praising our lodge for our many donations. If it weren't for our good faithful workers on Saturday and Tuesday nights, we wouldn't have been able to do and donate so much money for our hall for so many worthy causes.

All chairpersons' reports were in good order.

Eighteen members and two guests were present in the youth club; and twenty - two members were present for the lodge meeting.

Trustee Report -- Edward Bartek was absent. The gutters have been installed and worked good during our rains; popcorn kettle has been ordered and should be here this week, hopefully. I was appointed to take over the kitchen for the remainder of the year.

Audit Report -- All books were in good order with a few discrepancies.

Billye Leuch was accepted into the lodge by a show of hands.

A plaque was presented to the lodge from the Academy Little League by Ann Tomastik.

A motion was made to donate 3 cases of sodawater for a booth at the District II fall meeting on September 14th; also Jesse Barber donated some pictures.

Othean Jezek thanked the ones who had helped her in the kitchen and I would like to say a "thank you" to Othean for leaving the kitchen well stocked and in perfect order. Othean always had an excellent report from the Health Department.

The workers who made the trip to Las Vegas over the Labor Day Weekend had a wonderful time; everyone came back tired but now everyone is ready to go again.

Two dances have been held by the workers and still have one more to go.

Sandwiches were made and sold on bingo nights and really went over

greatly with the bingo players. All this was done to pay back the lodge for the plane tickets; everyone paid for their own lodging and spending money.

Thanks to the other workers who operated the hall the weekend that we were away.

After our workers are through selling the sandwiches, I have asked Youth Leader Ann Tomastik if her youth club would like to sell sandwiches and cakes on Tuesday nights and, therefore, make money for her youth club. The sandwiches went over so good that we will need to continue them. We enjoyed having Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Gebala and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Mikulas along on our trip; are you all also ready to go, again?

Folk Orchestra/Dance Ensemble To Perform In Bryan Moravian

A musical group from Czechoslovakia which specializes in Czech and Moravian folk music will perform on Saturday evening, November 15th in Bryan, Texas. The folk orchestra, named Burcaci, will be accompanied by a dance troupe named Vlcnovjan, which will perform native Moravian dances. The orchestra will also provide music for ballroom dancing.

This spectacular musical and dance performance, in full folk costume and of a type which has never been seen in Texas, will be a Czechoslovak salute to the important Czech - Moravian heritage of the state. However, this is only part of a three - day program entitled Czech Music in Texas: A Sesquicentennial Symposium, scheduled for the Brazos Center in Bryan, November 14 - 16, 1986. Co sponsored by the Czech Ex - Students Association of Texas and the Brazos County Sesquicentennial Commission, the program includes lectures by prominent folklorists, musicologists, writers, and other scholars; panel discussions on the value and meaning of Czech music in the state; and performances of Czech classical music by concert pianists, in addition to appearances by popular polka bands, orchestras, choral groups, and dance groups from all over Texas.

The program will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Friday evening, with a dance by the well - known Texas - Czech band,the Vrazels,and will end Sunday night with a dance by the popular Jodie Mikula Orchestra. Among the featured performances on Saturday and Sunday will be those by the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra, the SPJST Lodge No. 88 Czech Concert Orchestra, the Seaton Brass Band, the Czech Choral Group of Houston, the Dallas Czech Singers, the Czech Singers of Victoria, the University Czech Singers, the Czech Folk Dancers of West, the Texas Czech Beseda Dancers, Norbert Blazek and the Texas Czech Folk Singers, the Gulf Coast Czech Singers, the Heritage Singers of South Texas, Bob Schlecte and Friends (polka band), and special "surprise" guests.

Individual performers of classical and folk music will include Markus Hanus, Michael Beckerman, John Novak, Zdena Salivarova, Kevin Hannan, and Barbara Dybala.

Among the speakers will be the Czech novelist Josef Skvorecky, who now lives in Toronto, the anthropologist Zdenek Salzmann, and several other Texas, American, and international scholars, such as Josef Rostinsky, Svatava Jakobson, James Leary, John J. Karas, and Calvin Chervenka. Bernard M. Gebala will moderate a panel of Czech music radio hosts on the subject of "the future of Czech music in Texas "– Helen Pavelka, Al Kozel, Alfred Vrazel, Rudy Sefcik and Lada Cerny. James W. Mendl will conduct a series of interviews (open to the public) with current and former Texas Czech bandleaders and members of their bands and families. This project is being coordinated with Joseph Janak and other researchers who are reconstructing the history of Texas Czech bands and orchestras. Exhibits of antique musical instruments, song books, and other artifacts will be on display.

A Catholic mass with Czech liturgy and music and Czech Protestant services will be held on the symposium site on Sunday morning.

Festival/Tarok Tournament The Victoria Czech Heritage Society will hold its second Czech Heritage Festival on Sunday, October 19, 1986 at the Victoria Community Center Annex located at 2905 East North Street in Victoria, Texas. In conjunction with the festival, the second Texas State Tarok Tournament will be held. The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society is doing this to help preserve the centuries - old card game.

Preregistration forms can be obtained from the society at 108 E. Forrest Street, Victoria, Texas 77901, Room 113; when preregistering, please enclose a self - addressed envelope with your request. The fee will be $10 per contestant.

Registration at the annex starts at 12 noon. The tournament will begin at 1 p.m. Prizes of $100 for first place; $75 for second place and $50 for third place will be awarded, plus trophies.

Deadline for preregistering is October 5th.

October Vestnik Project Making Sauerkraut In the fall, many families would buy a small load of cabbage heads from a farmer and make sauerkraut. First, the cabbage was thinly sliced on a special cabbage slicer (strudhadlo), and piled in tubs. Then a clean, wooden barrel was set in the middle of the room. The older children would be bathed and dressed in clean underwear. They would then take turns getting into the barrel and treading the cabbage. The mother or father would dip out the juice from the cabbage. When enough juice was squeezed out, then salt and Name

caraway seed was sprinkled on the crushed cabbage and another layer of fresh cabbage was added and trod.

Sometimes, the mothers would also tread the cabbage, but, never the men.

Some people pounded the juice out of the cabbage, but this was not as easy as treading.

District II officers wish to thank all members for their help; to Lodge 47 officers and members for preparing the meal; decorating the hall; setting up stands and chairs, and for the use of their beautiful facilities. Thank you so much, Lodge 47!

The winner of the handmade quilt was Lodge 187, Round Rock. Winners of the horseshoe tournament, in the youth department, were Allan Haisler and Craig Waits; in the adult department, were Josef and Michael Morris.

It was very satisfying to see everyone help out in a way that you did and we certainly thank you for it.

Dear Readers: Our September meeting was held on September 10, 1986. We had 18 members present.

Plans were made to attend the fall District II meeting and the. District II Six Flags' trip. Four,members of the youth club and two guests attended the district fall meeting at Seaton. We really enjoyed ourselves and won lots of stuff. Frank looked good wearing a pie; so did several others.

Fourteen members were brave enough to get on the bus and go to Six Flags even though it was cloudy. We had a real good time. Gloria Ebner really knows how to celebrate a birthday -- three bus loads of kids and Six Flags!

At our upcoming meeting, we will discuss our fund - raisers and some charity projects.

A Kolache Festival was held on September 13th with the New Tabor Lodge No. 17 SPJST Youth Club participating. The youth club members set up a booth at the festival and the opera. We sold sandwiches and chips.

The festival is an annual event in our town celebrating the customs of the Czechs. It was a day of fun.

We talked about State YAD and the winners, we also discussed the Taiton Community Fall Festival which will be held on October 19th at the Taiton Community Center. The District II Six Flags' trip on Sunday, September 21st was a lot of fun and I think everyone enjoyed it.

We especially enjoyed riding the new "Avalanche Bobsled" ride.

Scribe Mindy Suehs registered members and visitors. The door prize was won by Kristen Cannon.

Under new business we planned our annual barbecue held for October. We decided each family member bring a cake for the auction and sell tickets.

We decided the tickets should be sold by our next meeting.

At the Kolache Festival, we decided the youth club will have a booth selling sandwiches. Each family member should bring a dozen sandwiches to sell.

After our meeting was adjourned we made a craft. Our next meeting will be at 3 p.m. on October 5th.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Hi! I hope you had as much fun as I did this summer. One of my favorite things was Camp Val Verde. I love horseback riding and swimming the most. I could do that every day! Also there's nothing like coming in for breakfast early in the morning to find your underwear hung up for all to see.

Just wait, girls! One thing I had a small problem with was keeping all my stuff together. When I got home, Mom told me I had a Gumby t-shirt and some Lee jeans that didn't belong to me. How was I supposed to know!

They have to belong to someone who stayed in the big cabin, Contact my leader, Bessie Petr, Lodge 84, and I'll get them back to you!

State YAD in Temple was a real experience. I enjoyed being Charles Pokladnik's duke. He's a real nice guy and by the way -- those chairs up on stage are real comfortable.

I'm real sorry summer is over; can't wait until next year.

Pace and distance combined make walking a workout. In order to receive benefits from walking you should move at a steady pace that makes your heart beat faster and causes you to breathe more deeply. Remember to hold your head erect and keep your back straight and abdomen flat.

The only "special equipment" required to walk is a good pair of shoes. Your shoes should be comfortable, provide good support, and not cause blisters or calluses.

Good running shoes are good walking shoes, as are some of the lighter trail and hiking boots and casual shoes with heavy rubber or crepe soles. The shoes you select should have arch supports, and the uppers should be made of materials that breathe, such as leather or nylon mesh.

Walking generates lots of body heat, so you will want to wear lighter clothing than the temperature seems to indicate. In cold weather, it is best to dress in several layers of light clothing.

The layers will trap heat, and are easy to shed if you get too warm. Wearing a wool cap when walking in cold weather also helps trap body heat.

Put on your walking shoes, light weight hiking boots, or running shoes.

Put a tape of Sousa marches in your portable cassette player. Now MARCH! That is one way to walk for exercise. While most of us walk to the breakfast table, to the bus, or stroll around the neighborhood, that is not really exercise. You need to put out some effort. Yet walking could very easily be the most popular form of exercise today. Of the 165 million American adults who exercise regularly, two - thirds • of them list walking as one of their activities.

Walking to keep fit is so popular because it doesn't take any special equipment and doesn't require any special skills. Almost everyone can do it. And walking, or any other form of exercise, will make you feel better, not only physically, but mentally as well.

If you think that you might like to turn your everyday walking into exercise, but want to make sure you begin "on the right foot," the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports has a booklet for you. Use of capital letters: There is a difference in the usage of capital letters in Czech and English. Ex.: Yesterday was Wednesday, July 14, 1968.

—before and after an adverbial clause: Jakmile me uvidel, g el prye.

Finally, quotation marks are always preceded by a colon. Ex.: Otec fekl synovi: "Pracuj a ue se!" (In Czech, the first quotation marks are on the line, not inverted, and ARE inverted at the end of the quotation. Our machines here do not print the double inverted quotation marks. The trend here in the US is to use the standard English quotation marks— "").

Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole, the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech.

Here are other important points in spelling: Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the POLITE—FORMAL usage are capitalized, as are those of the FAMILIAR—INFORMAL usage: Vy, Vam, Va g ; Ty, Tvilj, Tobe. The latter are ALWAYS in caps; the polite form is capitalized only when referring to one person. If you are referring to a group (plural), then the pronouns are not capitalized.

A common error made by many Czechs in this area is that when they use the formal Vy, Vas, Vam, they use a PLURAL VERB, ALTHOUGH THEY ARE ADDRESSING ONLY ONE PERSON. WRONG Vy, (1 person) jste veera jeli do mesta. Do not use a plural verb unless you are speaking to more than one person.

The pronoun jd is not capitalized: neither do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality. (This IS done in English). Ex.: Mdm eeskou 2enu. (I have a Czech wife). Mluvime
