Czechoslovakian Heritage and the State's 150th Birthday were major themes behind this first place winning float of SPJST Lodge Jaromir, No. 54 in West. In total, the fraternal benefit societies which comprise the NFCA spent more than $242 million last year on non - insurance fraternal benefits.

Fraternal Milestone Fraternal Benefit Societies Celebrate 100 Years Of Providing Unique Benefits in The Insurance Industry WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 25, 1986) -- What began 100 years ago as a volunteer movement to help the tens of thousands of immigrants pouring into the United States has developed into multi - billion dollar industry.

Fraternal benefit societies were formed to help immigrants learn the language, customs and values of America; to help the newcomers find employment; to connect individuals with common backgrounds to solve common problems; and to provide financial support, including passing the hat to collect burial funds when members died.

The 100 fraternal benefit societies that now belong to the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) still maintain this same concern, and many of the same activities, for their members, but the hat - passing is long gone. In its place are fraternal insurance programs that provide more than $100 billion of life insurance protection to 10,000,000 people.

Fraternal benefit societies, under the organizational umbrella of the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA), are celebrating their centennial this week at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in the same city where the organization was born in 1886.

The history of fraternals reflects frequent changes to meet the changing needs of consumers. In addition to the development of sophisticated insurance programs -- fraternal insurance is essentially identical to commercial lines -- when support programs encouraging cultural assimilation were less needed, new fraternal programs were cultivated to tap member volunteerism.

It is this focus on volunteerism that makes fraternals unique, for in addition to providing insurance protection to members, fraternals provide financial and organizational support to help their members accomplish humanitarian, service, social, educational and religious activities to help individuals and institutions in their local communities.

Last year, fraternal volunteers gave more than 25,000,000 hours of their time through 7,000,000 volunteer projects to provide needed help and services. Fraternal benefit societies maintain and support orphanages, homes for the aged, churches and other not - for - profit institutions and agencies. They provide financial support for the indigent, the dying and others needing a helping hand. They give volunteer and financial support to the stricken and homeless who are victims of floods, tornadoes, fires, drought and other disasters. In addition to this volunteerism, fraternals maintain some of the world's largest private systems of scholarships and other educational support, providing more than $11 million last year for students and the institutions they attended.

868 -- John Jordan Upchurch initiated the first fraternal benefit society, Ancient Order of United Workmen.

1886 -- National Fraternal Congress organized with 16 societies at Washington, D.C. Supervision by state insurance departments invited and uniform laws for fraternal insurance enacted.

1890 -- Fraternal Monitor magazine founded by M.F. Van Burkirk and published exclusively for fraternal benefit societies and their members.

First society designed exclusively for women organized.

1891 -Canadian Fraternal Association (counterpart of NFCA) holds its first annual meeting.

1900 -- Juvenile life insurance authorized for fraternals.

1913 -- National Fraternal Congress and Associated Fraternities merge to become the National Fraternal Congress of America.

1925 -- First woman president of the NFCA. 1932 - 33 -- Fraternal benefit societies fully meet every just claim in the country's severest financial depression.

1944 -- U.S. War Bond purchases by fraternal benefit societies reach $277 million.

1945 -- Fraternalists from several ethnic societies deliver talks broadcast in their native tongues over the "Voice of America" radio network to pierce the Iron Curtain during the immediate post - World War II period.

1948 -- Fraternalists lead the way for a new type of insurance, juvenile insurance, by sponsoring the Juvenile Bill and seeing it passed in the state of New York.

The Wisconsin Fraternal Congress establishes National Fraternal Flag Day Foundation to further promote the annual celebration of Flag Day in conjunction with Fraternal Week.

Delegation of fraternalists succeed in getting Congress to add the words "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance.

1955 -- National Association of Insurance Commissioners approves the Uniform Code for Organization and Supervision of Fraternal Benefit Societies.

1962 -- National Association of Insurance Commissioners ratifies Uniform Code, with amendments.

1971 -- NFCA and its member societies resolve to participate in fight against drug abuse.

1976 -- Birthplace of Flag Day, in Fredonia, Wisconsin, established as a shrine by fraternalists.

1983 -- NFCA and entire fraternal industry approve the new Model Fraternal Code.

NFCA Law Committee begins task of having the code enacted into law in all 50 states.

1984 -- Rhode Island is first state to enact Model Fraternal Code.

1986 -- NFCA celebrates 100th anniversary.

17 New Tabor To Hold Fall Festival Lodge

Dear Members: Our regular monthly meeting was held on the first Sunday of this month with all officers present with the exception of Financial. Secretary Martha Trcalek. Secretary Melvin Skrabanek performed her duties for the day.

A resolution was read for departed Sister Lydia Sebesta. We extend our sympathy to her family and loved ones.

Plans were finalized for our October Fall Festival. Folks, this is one festival you "don't want to miss."

Activities Director Bud Petty will be in charge of a "42" couples' tournament to be held on November 9th with proceeds going to local

charities. Watch the Vestnik for further information.

New members are Bridget Paul, Milton Engleman and William (Buddy) and Jo Ann Warren. We would like to welcome them heartily.

There will be plaques for our lodge "42" and "Straight" domino winners (those going to the state playoffs).

Lodge 80 Holland Meeting Dear Members and Friends: Our September 17th meeting was called to order by President Bohac at 2 p.m. with all the officers present. The president requested all members to rise for the Pledge of Allegiance which was recited by 21 members present. They remained standing for a moment of silent tribute to our departed members.

Secretary Latham read the minutes of our August meeting; there were no corrections or additions to the minutes and they were accepted as read by the secretary.

Under correspondence, a thank you card from Joe Barabas, Jr. was received.

Secretary Latham gave the members a good report from all departments of our lodge.

A welcome ovation was given to Joe Barabas, Jr. after being absent for some time due to major surgery in July. I want to thank President Bohac, and fellow members for this much appreciated welcome. Thank you, once again concerning my surgery. I was operated for gall stones. After surgery, the surgeon came to the recovery room and asked me if I had some chuck holes in the yard;that he had the gravel to fill them up; a large plastic bag full. I am doing fairly well, however, still a little weak.

Members accepted at our lodge during the September meeting were Dale Dawson, Iris Sikes, Derek Stroud, Shannon Stroud, Ronald Mucha and Ignac Steffek. We welcome you to our lodge and make it a point to attend the meetings.

A bus trip to Czech Day at the State Fair was discussed. I think it was decided to go on Saturday, October 4th, if the trip is finalized.

Since it was "Grandparents' Day," the .following at our meeting received prizes: Mr. and Mrs. Glen Latham, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Barabas, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Ligie Ivicic, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pajestka.

September birthday recipients were Mrs. Glen Latham and Joe Barabas, Jr. The meeting adjourned at 3 p.m. to meet again on Sunday, October 5th at 2 p.m.

Well, we have had a lot of rain for the past two or three weeks which has hindered the cotton crop harvest and lowered the grade considerably.

JSTLodge 92 Plans "Fun Night"

Dear Members and Friends: It is almost a certainty that many of you have been busy getting the children settled in school and by now accustomed to the familiar routine.

This can only mean that Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas follow

with the busy days of Autumn events.

At our meeting on September 14th, we found ourselves discussing a number of such activities and not enough weekends to accommodate them.

Our meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Staci Hubenak of the youth club. A resolution of sympathy was rendered by Secretary Christine Zich and a moment of silence was observed in memory of Sophie Batik Newton. We acknowledged two guests from Pilot Point, namely, Victor and John Kubala, brothers of our president. We also welcomed William and Ann Lesikar. May I take this opportunity to correct a recent mistake made naming Louis Kubala as one of the Domino Tournament winners. The winner was his brother, Dan Kubala. Sorry, Dan! Martha Durham reported sending a large number of birthday cards to members over 65 and then the members present who had September anniversaries received an "a cappello" rendition of "Happy Birthday." They were Liz and Elmer Howard, Raymond Hubenak, Evelyn Spacek, Mary Cecelia Krivanek and her mother, Mary Ann. When new business was discussed Mary Ann Krivanek was named chairperson of the Planning Committee for the four lodges of Fort Worth, Arlington and Burleson to be held on Sunday, December 21st. It is not too early to mention that the election of officers for next year will be held in November and that they will be installed at the aforementioned holiday party. The chosen slate will take over their duties in January.

Because a majority was in favor of having a "fun night" once a month or perhaps more often, we planned on testing our first one on the third Tuesday in October. No formal hours were set, just any time after 6:30 p.m. with departure time left to each member's option. Bring your favorite game, cards, dominoes, etc., and then it's up to you. The lodge will furnish sandwiches unless you had rather BYOF (food).

Gordon Hubenak reported that the youth club went to Wet 'n Wild in conjunction with other groups from District III and that they also enjoyed a pizza party at the hail. When we have our Lodge Halloween Dance on October 25th, they would like all youth club members to be in costume and particularly want the adults to dress up. Many did last year and this resulted in a numb& of hilarious getups. It is not premature to be seeing on or planning a winning costume.

There has been a change in the time of the St. Thomas Church Men's Club Dance on October 11th. The hours will be 8 to 12 instead of 9 to 1. There will also be a change for the KC Dance.

The new date will be on Sunday afternoon, October 19th instead of Saturday night. The hours will be 4 to 8 Sunday afternoon. Therefore, with the October meeting on the 12th and so many activities forthcoming we just must see you at one or more of them.

San Antonio Lodge No. 133 will be enjoying themselves at a party on Wednesday, September 24th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the McArthur Park in Pavilion No. 4, 1611 NE Loop 410.

We welcome all members to participate and enjoy the afternoon with your fraternal brothers and sisters. We will have games.

Members are asked to bring their dominoes and cards; also, if you have a card table bring it with you just in case we do not have enough tables. We are also asking all members to bring two covered dishes; one meat and a vegetable or pastry dish; tea and coffee will be furnished. Lodge 154 Ft. Worth To Meet Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting was called to order by president, Brother Jerry Milan.

All officers were present and Brother Milan led us in the pledge to the flag and asked the members to remain standing for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased Sister Christine Hvezdos. Our sincere sympathy to all of her family and may she rest in peace.

Brother Milan made welcome several guests.

All officers were present and all the reports were approved as read after a minor change.

Sister Mary Renfro reported no new candidates, but sold additional insurance.

Brother Milan attended a special Culture Society meeting and gave us the change on some of the program.

Brother Frank Kovar also gave his report and looks like everything is going great for the Czech Day at the State Fair on Sunday, October 5th.

There will be a lot of activities at the different halls in Dallas and the mass, dinner and dance at the Czech Club.

This is a reservation affair. Get your tickets early.

Sister Carolyn Cleveland, youth leader, gave a report on the District III camp. She said Sister Bessie Petr and SYD Sue Meadows had everything so well organized and that it was one of the best fun camps. She praised Sister Meadows highly for the fine job she is doing. Carolyn also gave the plans for the Halloween party. It will be Thursday night, October 30th (due to bingo Friday) 7 p.m.

We were reminded of the District III meeting on Sunday, September 28th hosted by Lodge 180, Burleson.

Sister Mary Hale enjoyed her daughter, Sister Mary Katherine Garrison for 2 weeks. Her first visit here in 7 years and everyone enjoyed seeing her. I had the pleasure to ride to St. Louis with her. She spent the night with my niece, Sister Mary K. Harrison and family, which they really enjoyed. She and my sister hadn't seen

each other in 59 years, so there was a lot to talk about.

I got to spend a week and gained 5 pounds with all that delicious homemade bread, and all of Mary K.'s good cooking. It was good to see my brother looking so well. He didn't even know Benny and I were there in April.

Mickey sends her regards to all her friends in Fort Worth and Dallas. I flew back and had a wonderful trip.

Brother Carl Johnson just returned from a business and some pleasure trip in Los Angeles.

Benny and I received a call from Brother Jerry and Sister Bessie Pavlicek, his cousins from Lodge 88 in Houston. It's been over 33 years since we've seen them. We were sorry we didn't get to see them. They were on their way to Dallas.

We extend our sincere sympathy to the family of Sister Sophie Botik Newton. May she rest in peace.

Our congratulations to Frankie, Jr., and Janet Prochaska on the arrival August 30th of a son, Joseph Keith.

We were sorry to hear of Jewel Clark's (Carrie Milan's mother) accident at the airport on her way to South Carolina. Get well soon!

Brother Bobby, Sister Carolyn Cleveland and son, Ky, after taking Carrie Ann to the Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, took a couple of weeks off visiting friends in Tennessee and Bobby playing golf and some sightseeing. They had some beautiful pictures to show.

Before the meeting adjourned, "Happy Anniversary" was extended to Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan, their 29th. Brother Joe and Sister Carrie Milan missed the meeting; their daughters, Carolyn and Marlyn and their spouses gave them a long weekend at Los Colinas, after a family dinner there the night before -their 42nd. May they have many more.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Sister Mary Hale, her 85th and yours truly for her 76th and a large group of September celebrants were mentioned.

We wish all our October celebrants a "Happy Birthday" and may you all have many more.

After the meeting, the men played horseshoes, women dominoes and then we had a feast -- so there went our weight. Everything was enjoyed by all.

Then the "Straight" domino players played for the tournament.

Brother Joe Milan was our door prize winner but was out celebrating and missed it.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, October 12th at 3 p.m. So until --Keep Smiling!

ST— Lodge La Parita 161 Meeting

Dear Members: Our lodge meeting was held Sunday, September 14, 1986 at 11:30 a.m. at K - Bobs Restaurant, Pleasanton, Texas; a well - attended meeting with 17 members and 2 guests present.

The meeting was called to order by President Lloyd House asking all members to stand and repeat the Pledge of Allegiance of our flag.

Secretary Sister Tillie Valchar read the minutes of our last meeting, followed by the treasurer's report which was read by the president and was approved.

Correspondence was read by the secretary regarding a musical fest to be held November 14th- 16th in Bryan, Texas at the Brazos Center.

President Lloyd House complimented Sister Tillie Valchar

from SPJST as lead insurance salesman for District VII for the month of July -- from January to September a total of $68,000 insurance for 13 new members.

President Lloyd House expressed appreciation on another $500 Scholarship fund to his daughter Sandra McCann from SPJST. A motion was made by Henry Mann and seconded by Jim Zezula to hold the meetings for a year at K - Bobs.

Motion carried.

A get well card was sent to Joyce Neill. She expressed her appreciation which helped her get well.

Jim Zezula made a motion that the cost for framing the certificate from the Statue of Liberty be refunded.

Motion carried.

Bette House asked the group for consideration of a donation to charity for the year to be discussed. It was decided to keep the Scholarship Fund.

The lodge then decided to send $100 to the Stholarship Fund for the year.

Secretary Tillie Valchar recognized and named the new members present and guests. There were several members who asked the secretary to help them get their premium refund checks straight and also some wished to receive their Vestnik.

The next meeting will be held Sunday, December 14, 1986 at K Bobs at 11:30 a.m.

Vlasta Juricek made a motion that the meeting adjourn completion of business with; Vince Pivonka seconded the motion.

A table prayer was given by Joe Juricek with everyone enjoying a meal of their choice.

Hello to all of you! On September 7th, our lodge held a social for members and guests and if you were not present you surely missed a great time. Seems that everyone there was in a party mood and enjoying every minute of it. For entertainment, we had a clogging group from Friendswood and they gave a fantastic performance which we all enjoyed immensely. The Vaneks furnished the music and I must say. they really did a wonderful job in their selection of songs as well as how they were played.

The food was delicious and we all overate as usual.

We had quite a few people from out - of - town who came to join us and a large crowd of local members and guests. Seems the crowds are getting bigger with every social as we go along and this is great.

We held a special benefit auction for a family in need and raised $455 for which we were very thankful.

We have something nice in store for our active members beginning in January 1987. Each local lodge member will receive two (2) free dance tickets on their birthday. These tickets will have no time limit but can only be used for our regular Saturday night dances. Special dances and New Year's Eve dances are excluded. We thought this would be a nice thing to do for the members who pay local dues and are otherwise active in their lodge. As you know, we have one of the nicest lodges in the state and, if you are not presently attending our dances, etc., we urge you to start. Be with us and be one of us.

The tickets for the New Year's Eve dance will go on sale October 4th to

December 6th for reservations. The tickets will be $12.50 per person either through the mail or at the door and there will be NO tickets held at the door per telephone reservations; it will be necessary to get the checks for your tickets in by December 6th in order that your tickets can be mailed to you in plenty of time. To avoid overcrowding we are only selling 850 tickets for this dance. I hope to see you there.

Be sure to post the following dates for ballroom dancing with Henry Tannenburger on your calendar so you won't miss out -- September 26th, October 17th and November 21st.

These are DRESS - CODE dances so put on your best bib and tucker and come on out.

We want to extend our sympathy out to Bonnie Brinlee in the loss of her father recently. Our thoughts are with you, Bonnie.

We also want to say "Hi" to our out - of - town members, Jerry Becka of Nederland, Natalie Bennett of Brazoria and Richard Bezdek of Rosenberg, and we want to add a hearty "congratulations" to Joe Tanecka and wife, Rose, on their 31st wedding anniversary and wish them many more.

From Lodge 183, Mid-Cities Greetings

Dear Members: The last monthly meeting on Monday, September 8th was brief because everyone wanted to go home and watch the Cowboys' game on TV. All necessary business was conducted in a short time.

On the sick list for the month was Albert Greenlees who had surgery. The members wished him a speedy recovery and good health.

One new member, Barbara Andres, was voted on and approved. Welcome to SPJST, Barbara, and hope your stay at Lodge 183 will be a long and an enjoyable one. Come and attend meetings, socials, and see what the other members are doing.

The Nominating Committee was appointed at this meeting; they are Norman Kneschk, Inez Greenlees and Jeanie Roznos. If you members wish to have someone to run for office for the 1987 year, please let the committee know. We need some help and would like to know what you, the members, think about the way the lodge is being run.

Our President Daniel Roznovsky announced that he would not be seeking the office of president for 1987 because of his work. He said that he would not have enough time for lodge duties, so, at the present time, the office of president is open for nominations; anyone wishing to run please step forward. Remember that elections will be held in November this year and the installation of officers will be at the Christmas Party in December. Everyone get your thinking caps on and let's get a good slate of officers for 1987.

The next District III meeting will be held Sunday, September 28th at Burleson Lodge No. 180, so make plans to be there, a lot can be learned at these meetings.

If you are interested in Texas Czech History, there will be a Texas Czech History Symposium that will take place at Lodge No. 84, 2625 Floyd Street in Dallas, Texas on October 3rd and 4th, 1986. The symposium is sponsored by the American Czech Society under the direction of Lee Baca of the Czech Heritage Society.

This should be very interesting. It is believed that there will be visitors from all over the United States.

Also coming November 14 -16, 1986 at the Brazos Center in Bryan, Texas will be Czech Music in Texas: a Sesquicentennial Symposium. It will begin Friday evening at 7:30 with a dance by the well - known Texas Czech Band, the Vrazels and ends on Sunday night with the popular Jodie Mikula Orchestra. Saturday evening folk music and dance performance will be provided by the Cymbal Orchestra "Burcaci" and the dance Ensemble "Vlcnovjan," both from the Uherske Hradiste area of Southern Moravia.

Saturday, Saturday night and Sunday events will be filled with musical performances, lectures, decisions, interviews, and multi media presentations by participants from across the state, also including a panel of "Czech musical radio hosts, band leaders, Czech scholars, teachers, music students, and fraternal leaders.

This could be a very entertaining weekend for anyone interested in Czech music so mark your calendar and be there if you can.

Maybe you have heard people talk about getting old; well,age is just mind over matter, if you don't mind, it doesn't matter. See you in the funny paper and keep smiling; things could be worse!

ST— Lodge 187 Tip Party Planned

The existence of Lodge No. 187 Round Rock is due mainly to the volunteer services of a large number of individuals.

Members of the Thrall and Hutto Booster Clubs donated endless hours working in the kitchen during various activities and a lot of friends and relatives of the Board of Trustees donate an immense amount of their free time working in the bar and helping with the selling of tickets.

Without the continued support of the booster clubs, friends and relatives, Lodge 187 would be unable to continue to serve the community in the grand style that it has over the past 8 years.

Expressing appreciation to the large number of volunteer helpers is difficult to do satisfactorily. One mechanism that the Board of Trustees use to try and say "Thank You" is to hold a "Tip Party" several times a year for the volunteer workers and their family.

The tip parties are designed to allow the volunteer workers with an opportunity to get together and socialize, play dominoes or cards, pitch horseshoes or toss washers and , enjoy a catered meal.

At their August meeting, the Board of Trustees of Lodge 187 voted to hold the "Fall Tip Party" on Sunday, September 28th. The regularly scheduled general meeting will start at 2 p.m. with the tip party starting immediately after the short meeting. A catered meal will be served at about 5 p.m. Those interested in playing dominoes or cards are asked to bring them and everyone is asked to bring a dessert for after the meal. Allen

88 Birthday Club Report

The Birthday Club Sisters of Lodge 88 met on September 10th at 11:15 a.m. for their regular monthly meeting and luncheon. We had a good attendance although we have quite a bit of illness.

President Rita Alexander opened the meeting.

Secretary Rosalee Kostom read the minutes of the August meeting, which were approved as read. She also read correspondence from St. Rosa Lima Catholic Church, thanking the sisters for the memorial given to Virginia Hale, a Birthday Club Sister, in memory of her husband, Leon Hale, who recently passed away. Mrs. Hale gave the money to the church library, which was greatly appreciated.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the financial report, with a balance as of August 31, 1986 -- $1,843.17.

We needed some soup spoons and Lillie Spies had found some nice spoons at a reasonable price, so Vice President Mary Schenburn made a motion, seconded by Esther Holton,to buy 100 spoons. The motion carried.

Our sick sisters are Mary Tilich, who has been ill for some time; however, is at home now recuperating and Mary Kosut, our Sunshine Lady, was welcomed back after surgery and a long absence. Mary thanked Evelyr.

Mikolas for sending the cards for her.

President Rita thanked Emma Jarisch for the cards she donated to the club.

Della Kadlecek fell and twisted her knee, which required surgery, but is or crutches and doesn't miss a thing at Lodge 88. "What stamina she has!"

We have certainly missed Emily Bily who was a very faithful member for many years. Mary Johnson broke her collarbone, Minnie Bravenec has been very ill, too, and she's being missed a lot. Lillie Spies stated that her sister, Bessie Vasula, had several small surgeries; she's an in - and - out patient, and is doing fairly well. Mrs. Albina Drawe, a longtime member, is in a rest home and well taken care of and Mrs. Sylvia Melia has been ill, too.

Florena Taake has been suffering with a shoulder problem.

I, Pearl Hanka, went to see my precious mama - in - law at the Needville S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home and she was doing fine after a seige in the Poly Ryan Hospital in Rosenberg. We had an enjoyable visit, also Mrs. Helen Valcik is there now and she and Mrs. Hanka are eating at the same table, so they reminisce about the past at Lodge 88.

Hostesses for September are Mary Schenburn cooking for Sylvia Melia, Bessie Dewer cooked for Ann Hoffman, Margaret Bohac and Esther Holton cooked for Ann Green.

President Rita Alexander asked the members to bring pastry for Sunday, September 14th, for the Czech play.

The Birthday Club is to sell the pastry.

Circle Of Lodge 92 Ft Worth Ladies'

The Circle met at the National Hall on Tuesday morning, September 9th, with President Florence Greer presiding. All officers were present except Reporter Flora Koci who is recuperating at home after knee surgery. After calling the meeting to order, President Greer welcomed members and visitors, Agnes Reznicek, Mary Pavey and Roberta Peters.

Officers read their reports and few minor corrections were noted.

Secretary Frances Blake read correspondence from members thanking the Circle for our thoughtfulness in remembering them during their absence.

Sunshine Committee Lillie McMillen reported sending cards and money to members who were sick.

From a meager beginning, the Circle has grown to 88 registered members.

This is good because we can donate substantial gifts of money to SPJST Lodge No. 92 for improvements to the National Hall for permitting us to use their building for our monthly meetings, a very attractive place in which to meet.

A brief discussion was held regarding the election of officers in November for the next 2 - year term.

At our Tuesday meeting on October 14th, plans will be made for our November Thanksgiving dinner. Clara Cohen will check with the Brown Derby Restaurant on the North Side, and she will give a full report on October 14th. Please come to the October 14th meeting to learn more about our Thanksgiving arrangements.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to ten members. Mary and Don Powers will celebrate 53 years of happily - married life in September. Mary Hale won the door prize, and Rose Zalesak will donate the door prize for October. The hostesses in October will be Ida Mayer, Julia Dueser and Frances Simmank.

All members bring your covered dish and come to the October meeting.

Our Domino Tournament winners have been announced by Clara Broz who was in charge of the local sessions. Straight domino winners are Charlie Veit and Perry Seeberger.

Forty - two champions are Adolph and Robert Juricka. Both pairs will represent Lodge No. 88 in the state finals. Good luck guys and draw good rocks.

Sister Mary Quider, chairman of our auditors, is planning a two - week trip to the Orient. While there she will tour Tokyo, Kyoto, Hong Kong, Macaw and Seoul. She is looking forward to seeing the Imperial Palace in Japan and the International Market in Seoul, Korea. The tour is planning on having dinner at a floating restaurant in Hong Kong. She'll be home the first part of October with plenty of nice memories of her long - awaited trip.

Entertainment Committee Chairman Harley Cox had a second major surgery on Tuesday, September 9th for removal of a kidney due to another tumor. He is at SouthWest Memorial Hospital if you would like to send him a cheery card. Harley has had two major surgeries in a little over a week but his reports are still good. He just will need plenty of tender loving care for a while. Wife Viola has been at his bedside constantly to make things easier for him. We all wish him good health soon.

Plans are underway for Czech Day on Sunday, October 26th. A turkey dinner, a short and lively program, parade of costumes, and a free dance with music by the Vrazels are scheduled. More details will be available later. Just mark your calendar for now.

The big band sounds of the Jan Garber Orchestra will ring out in the Chandelier Ballroom this Saturday, September 27th. Tickets are $10 each or $9 if you show your lodge membership card. That card is becoming very valuable. Keep it with you at all times.

Dear Members and Friends: The September 3rd meeting was attended by 33 members and guest, ,Stacy Koch. Stacy has retired after many years of employment with Edison's Jewelers.

Birthday members were Thodore Bugaj, Josephine Bugaj, Annie Belota and Mary Pavey.

The hostess chairman, Jo Prochaska, gave and collected quilt tickets. She also reported Ima Lou LaPlant, Mary Pavey and Lydia Alholm as October 1st hostesses.

Game Chairman Rose Steinman read the names of members who brought game prizes. Our many thanks for the continued support for the nice prizes, especially to Ann Sustala for the lovely bonnet she had her husband, Andy, to deliver. We assured Ann that Andy was in good hands while she was at work.

The door prize, a homemade apron and potholder, donated by Marie Tesar, was won by Elma Anderson.

Elma Anderson will bring the door prize for the October meeting.

Various reports were made by several members.

Jo Prochaska announced that she and Frank are grandparents of a new grandson, born on August 30th. This is their 8th grandson. The proud parents are Janet and Frankie Prochaska.

Marie Tesar reported that her father, Mr. Kubecka of Shiner, Texas, will celebrate his 100th birthday on November 23rd; also, her brother, Gus and his wife, Mary Kubecka, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on the same day.

Lydia Alholm also announced that she and Roy celebrated their 4Qth Dallas wedding anniversary on August 31st.

Roy is visiting in Minnesota and attending the program of his cousin's induction into the "Football Hall of Fame" at St. Cloud State University.

It was so nice to see so many of you Mary Pavey was in St. Louis, at our September 4th meeting! Our visiting her brother, sister and sister's guests, as always, welcome–Lillian family. She was absent in presence, but Moran, Charlie Kocian, Phil Reames, not in thought because many of her Frank Mach, Roy Alholm, Bob volunteer duties were done by others at Zvolanek, Julius Podhrasky, Frank the meeting.

Since this is the Texas Noska and Bob Oates. Sisters who have missed a few meetings were Sesquicentennial year many especially welcomed back; namely, celebrations are planned, especially the Alice Roberts, Lydia Alholm, Millie American - Czech Days at the State Noska, Lydia Dirkx, Helen Oates, Fair of Texas on October 3rd, 4th and Elaine Skrabanek, Lillian Graeser, 5th.

No. 84 in Dallas on September 14th President Zvolanek welcomed was most enjoyable with food, games, everyone and then led us in the pledge prizes and dancing.

Membership Chairman Bertha Malik was not present. We did gain another member, my aunt, Lillian (Urban) Moran, who has just recently moved here from scenic San Francisco, California. Welcome to our Czech Ladies' Circle, Aunt Lil! Sunshine Chairman Adelle Vlk reported she mailed a get well card to Stanley Slovak, sympathy cards to Libby Slovak and Lydia Dirkx.

Sunshine Chairman Libbie Elsik mailed a sympathy card to Sister Martha Kocian.

Birthday Card Chairman Bessie Kalich sent cards to those who had September birthdays; namely, Hattie Hamusek, Virginia Blatney, Frances Jurcik and Bertha Malik. Our Chairman Bessie Kalich also celebrated her big day on September 15th.

Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council and the American - Czech Cultural meeting dates were announced. It seems everything is in order for the State Fair Sesquicentennial Celebration.

Under old business, President Zvolanek informed us she contacted two photographers for prices on pictures. Helen Vrla Jr., made the motion that we engage the services of Stephan Studios to take our group photo.

Our trip to South Fork will be tabled until our February meeting because there are too many activities scheduled by the different fraternals, etc. at this time of year.

A list was passed around to sign for our covered dish dinner in October. As you know, the fried chicken will be furnished by our Circle. All you need to bring is either a salad, vegetable or dessert.

Under new business, our Christmas dinner was discussed. We all decided to go out and enjoy ourselves at Wyatt's Cafeteria (Northlake location) in the Fireplace Room which Sister Mary Sebestik reserved for us.

Our door prizes were furnished this month by Ann Zvolanek, Bertha Podhrasky, Lydia Alholm, Alice Roberts and Zdenka Skotak.

Flowers this month were compliments of Libby Slovak and Lillian Graeser. Material samples compliments of Zdenka Skotak (any sales going to our Circle).

Yours truly led our group in singing "Happy Birthday" to our September celebrants.

Libbie Elsik was so proud to announce her brand new grandson, Philip Michael.

The month of September has a lot of special days, starting with Labor Day, September 1st (To honor the working man and woman, which was first observed in 1882). September 7th, Grandparents' Day, Citizenship Day, September 17th (Designated in 1952 by Congress, to commemorate the signing of the United States Constitution in 1787).

On September 23rd the Fall Season officially begins. To quote author unknown: "Just after the death of the flowers, and before they are buried in snow, there comes a festival season when Nature is all aglow."

On September 26th the Big Texas Sesquicentennial Celebration begins at the State Fair of Texas. If any of you are unable to get to the Fair on Czech Day and would like to attend, please call me at 348 - 2233 and I'll try to help you get there. We wouldn't want you to miss out just because you don't have a way.

Now remember, next month dress in a pioneer (frontier) fashion, bring your covered dish, hitch up that old:wagon, and come out and have fun with us at our October 2nd meeting.

46 J. J. Skrivanek, Jr. 1. CEFT was officially born on October 19, 1954; that's when the

Charter was signed by the Secretary of State in Austin. The charter was set up for 50 years; however, our attorney, Mr. Sidney Kacir, is looking into its extension.

2. I am now going to read some of the charter so that you all will know something about CEFT: ARTICLE I. The name of the corporation shall be THE CZECH EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION OF TEXAS. ARTICLE II. The purpose for which the corporation is formed is the support of any educational undertaking by providing for or making contributions as gifts or donations in cash or property to persons or institutions engaged in the promotion of learning and understanding of the Czech language and culture, the study of the origin, structure and modification of the Czech language and its grammatical relationships as given and preserved in literary embodiments, the dissemination of information to the public concerning the importance of a knowledge of Czech and other Slavonic languages in our citizenry to the effective leadership of the United States of America in international affairs, and to do each and every thing necessary, suitable or proper for the accomplishment of any of the purposes or the attainment of anyone or more of the objects herein enumerated.

ARTICLE VIII. In furtherance but not in limitation of the powers conferred by law, the Board of Directors is expressly authorized: (a) To adopt, amend and rescind Bylaws. (b) To make gifts, donations and contributions out of the net income or assets of the corporation to any party and in any amount as they may determine in their absolute discretion; provided, however, that any such gift, donation and contribution shall be made exclusively for the educational purposes herein enumerated and not contrary to any limitation or condition imposed by the donor or to any provision of these articles of incorporation. (c) To accept funds and gifts for the corporation subject to any limitation or condition imposed by the donor as to the use or investment of such funds or gifts or the income therefrom, except that no such limitation or condition may be inconsistent with or contrary to the purposes for which the corporation is created. (d) To purchase, acquire, hold, use, sell, convey, assign, lease, pool, unitize, mortgage, invest, reinvest, exchange, encumber, manage and control each and every portion of the property belonging to the corporation, real or personal, mineral or fee, segregated or undivided, as they may determine in their absolute discretion to further the purposes for which the corporation is formed. (e) To solicit gifts and donations for the furtherance of the purposes for which the corporation is created.

5. Since reorganizing, we have added another project to our goal - the main goal - The Establishment of a Permanent [Chair] Endowment of the Czech Language and Culture at one of our state universities - either at the University of Texas in Austin or at the Texas A&M University in College Station. The important thing is not where to set it up, but to do it. Both universities are very interested and have offered to help us finance the project. They believe that we need about one million dollars for a permanent chair. We are to raise a half - million and they are to match our $500,000.00.

6. Our plans are to establish an internationally recognized program of teaching and research in the area of the Czech language, linguistics, culture, literature and literary theory. The establishment of a Czech scholarship in the field of linguistics and literary theory today is unquestionable. The richness of Czech traditions are everywhere evident in parts of Texas and generations of young Czech Texans have received their higher education at our state universities.

7. A state university is founded by a legislative - mandated formula and subject to the regulations of the Coordinating Board for Higher Education in Austin. Therefore, programs that attract small numbers of students suffer accordingly from a relative lack of financial support and cannot normally be taught. For example, I was teaching in a public school when I was invited to come to Texas A&M University to teach Czech.

I took the job but I had to take a $3,000 cut in salary because the Czech classes were almost always smaller in enrollment than those in Spanish or some other foreign language class.

What happens in cases like this? Most of the Czech teachers will give up teaching Czech and go to a better paying job. Over a period of 40 years there is a terrific loss in earned dollars and when one retires, the retirement pay will also be less.

8. Our CEFT program would eliminate these problems: A student or students who would want to study Czech or Czech culture would know that it would be offered, regardless of how many students would sign up for it. The professor would be satisfied salary - wise because his pay would be as much or more than other professors. CEFT would have interest - earned money to supplement his salary and that, in turn, would attract better qualified professors and more students would be interested in enrolling in the study of Czech. Fact of the matter is that there would be two professors at the endowed university: The first would be a chair; for example, The Bedrich Smetana Chair in Slavonic Studies. It would be held by a renowned figure in literary theory with a principal research interest in Czech literature. The second, a named professorship would be held by a capable scholar in Slavonic Studies whose principal function would be to tend to the development of the instructional program in the Czech language. Both scholars could teach the beginning and advanced courses in Czech if it became necessary. Perhaps later even other East European languages could be added, but never at the expense of the Czech language!

9. So you can see that the endowed chair could lead to "other avenues:

There is a national interest and emphasis on East European Studies.

Our Federal Government has announced its renewed support for the teaching and development of a number of critical languages (prominent among these is Czech). Equally significant are the new East European Program and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the Enhanced East European Component of the International Research and Exchange Board Programs, and the Fulbright - Hays Fellowship Program which my late twin brother, John, participated in. Other possibilities are: Brother John and I developed the Prague. Summer Program and, because of his death in 1972, it fell upon me to take over and complete the program.

In the summer of 1973, I took the allowed 15 students with me to Charles University. This university was founded by Charles IV in 1348, the oldest university in Central Europe.

These students were from Texas universities, mostly from Texas A&M and the University of Texas. The following summer, we were allowed to take 25 students, some from other states. Why the allowance? Because the Czech University and Government paid for everything except the airfare, and even some allowance was made there. This was board, room, tuition, theatre, opera, etc. At the end of the 6 - week session we were taken on a trip for a week; one summer we went to Moravia, one to Cechy and one to Slovakia. Weekends were spent going to places like Lidice and on weekends that were spent in Praha, those who wanted to go to church were taken.

Some students went to see relatives, in Praha or out - of - town. In 1975 we were again allowed 25 students; over 50 from the United States applied.

10. I retired from Texas A&M University on August 31, 1975. I turned the Prague Summer Program over to the University of Texas. The reason I did this was that the following spring I was told that the Czech Program would be. phased out. The only reason given was that they could not find a competent teacher. This angered me because I did not think that they tried hard enough and, naturally, the program would have ended. I sincerely believe that this program did more to rekindle interest in Czech than anything else that has been done in the past 25 years.

11. The other thing that helped considerably in encouraging students to study the Czech language and culture here in Texas was Dr. Vaclav Hunacek. In 1968 or 1969, Brother John was in Praha on a year's leave.

While there the Texas Education Agency wrote him to select 3 outstanding professors who would be willing to come to Texas for a year and work with them in setting up a good social studies' program and the Czech language program in our schools. John sent them the 3 names. They then called him and asked him to select one from the three names. He selected Dr. Vaclav Hunacek. I do not feel that I have ever met a more knowledgeable and intelligent man anywhere. He speaks five languages fluently; I would hesitate to even discuss American history with him because he would probably embarrass me. In 1971 when I spent 60 days in Czechoslovakia, he devoted half of each day taking me around in Czechoslovakia to places like Lidice or wherever I wanted to go.

We attended 27 churches; Catholic, Protestant, East Orthodox; many protestant churches such as Moravian Brethren, Church of Czechoslovakia, Lutheran, Czech Brethren Evangelical,

Unity of the Brethren, Baptist, Methodist, etc. The thing that puzzled me the most was that many people attended church services. For instance, we went to a Baptist church one Sunday morning. To my surprise I had to stand up; all seats were taken. Later the word got around that there was a "Texasan" among us. An elderly gentleman got up, took me by my arm and made me take his seat. After church, we talked. He told me that he was a fourth generation Ukrainian and had moved back to Praha.

12. We are preparing a Permanent Book[s] that will be given to the endowed university. The name of each individual and amount donated will be entered into it; however, those who may not want their names entered may let us know and they will not be included. We are also thinking about museums such as the SPJST museum in Temple, if they would like to have a copy of the permanent book, please let us know. ***

III Wet n' Wild Trip

Our monthly meeting was held on September 14th at 2:30 p.m. with ten members, three adults and two visitors present.

The old business was about our trip to Wet n' Wild. Our new business was that each family is asked to bring canned goods to our meetings for a donation to a .needy cause; we also decided to have a skating party on September 20th.

With no further business we adjourned the meeting.

Waco Lodge 66 Youth Entered State YAD Dear Youth and Readers, On August 17th, we went to State YAD in Temple. We had three youth entered in four categories.

Chris Pavlicek placed third in Foods (10 - 12); Larry Yates, third in Handicraft (13 - 14); Donna Stanislav, second in Hobby Kits (15 - 17).

I want to thank my parents, Youth Leader Betty Schoenemann and District Youth Counselor Susan Skrabanek for their help and support in reaching this goal.

I had a chance to work with Mrs. Meadows and Mrs. Bartosh in the Mini - Museum this past weekend. It was a lot of fun and we visited with many parents and youth who were not familiar with SPJST. Let me say that if I can help your lodge or youth club in any way in the coming year, please let Mrs. Meadows or me know. With youth activities in local lodges this can be a good way to introduce other youth and their parents to the opportunities that are available by becoming a member of the SPJST. Dear Youth Members, On September 6th, we went to Wet n' Wild with the lodges in District III, also youth from Lodge 66 went, namely, Terry Gilchrest and Larry Yates. All the youth members had a good time and were happy that it wasn't raining there like it was in Waco.

We had a surprise on our trip to Dallas. We made a "pit stop" and had the privilege of meeting Ronnie Millsap. We were all excited about having our picture made with him, but our mothers were more excited.

I am looking forward to our next District III outing and hope to see more of you there. Don't forget the District III meeting on September 28th at Burleson.

Dear Readers, The monthly meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was held September 10, 1986 beginning at 7:30 p.m.

President Christy Marek called the meeting to order. Susan and Melissa Holtman led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Kim Schneider called the roll. Present were 30 members, 2 adults, Mrs. Nancy Posvar and Mrs. Jane Bruggman and one guest, Chad Bruggman.

We received a correspondence from Sue Meadows. It mentioned that she was proud of our youth club for having a superior amount of Lodge No. 24 youth who participated in the August Vestnik Project.

Under unfinished business we elected a committee to be in charge of the float we will have in the Christmas Parade. The committee consists of Janet Macek, Kristie Waits, Christy Marek, Melissa and Susan Holtman, and Melanie Zavodny.

Our fall money - making project will be a dinner. More information will be given later on.

For our Halloween party we will go to a spookhouse. Then we will go eat ice cream. Dates will be given at our next meeting.

We will go Christmas caroling to a nursing home in Temple in Decembe*.

We will have a few practices before this event.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:25 p.m.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The El Campo - Hillje Lodge No. 40 Youth Club held its monthly meeting on September 4, 1986. We met in the Commercial State Bank Gold Room at 7 p.m.

President Jody Henderson called the meeting to order and Kim Kacal led the Pledge of Allegiance. Treasurer Darren Dybala called the roll and collected dues. Secretary Kim Kacal read the minutes and correspondence.

The guests and new members were welcomed. Our two new members are Phelan and Tucker Scott. Valerie and Stephanie Roye were guests.

We discussed various events such as State YAD, District VI fall meeting, charity projects, fund - raisers and other future events. ,„ Phelan Scott and Crystal Roye were birthday honorees.

117 YC Attends Many Functions

Dear Readers, The Robstown Youth Club held its monthly meeting on September 13th at 1:30 p.m. President Donald Marek called the meeting to order and Donald led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Our new member is Clinton Siler.

A birthday party, after the meeting, was for Susan Carey. Door prize, donated by Dalad Marek, was won by Carlos Perales.

Our next meeting will be held on October 18th. The Halloween party will be held on October 25th at the Scout Hut. Youth Clubbers will be going to Bayfest on September 26th and 27th.

On August 17th, the State YAD was held at the Frank May born Convention Center in Temple. We had 7 youth clubbers who entered their items; namely, Donald Marek, in Science/Educational won first place and second in Hobby Kits, Stefnie Hill won first place in Individual Talent, Ben Hill won second place in Hobby Kits, Jennifer Marek won in Handicraft, Darryl Foster and Alex Landin won third place in Royalty, and Scrapbook received third place.

We are hoping to do better next year.

Lodge 35, Elk Youth Take District Outing

On September 6th, our lodge traveled to Garland to meet with other District III members for a day at Wet n' Wild.

When we left Waco, it was raining so we really had our doubts about a fun - day because it continued to rain all the way to our planned location.

We made a stop at a station and it just happened Ronnie Millsap also stopped; after talking to him, Manager Louis Burney managed to get him to say "Hi" and to take a picture.

Everyone was excited about it.

Once we got to Wet n' Wild, it wasn't raining just misting and we almost had the park to ourselves; we swam all day. The other kids played volleyball and everybody had a great day. I want to say thank you to Bessie Petr who arranged this; we appreciate it.

Our last meeting was held on September 6th at the skating rink at Ballinger. After a short meeting, we had a skating party. It was attended by 12 members, 10 guests and 6 adults.

Everyone had a fun - time skating, playing games and falling.

Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 33, Bleiblerville, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister HULDA RASCH, who passed away on September 3, 1986 at Sweetbriar Nursing Home in Bellville at the age of 94.

Mrs. Hulda Rasch was born 16 September 1891, the daughter of William and Marie (Lampie) Schaeffer.

On November 5, 1912 she was married to August L. Rasch in New Wehdem. She attended school in New Wehdem.

Sister Rasch was a member of Bleiblerville SPJST Lodge No. 33, and a member of the Industry Brethren Church.

Sister Rasch spent her entire life as a housewife and lived on a farm raising crops, cattle and gardens. She loved to make quilts.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on September 5th from Industry Brethren Church with Rev. Milton Maly officiating. Burial was in Industry Brethren Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Herbert Schovajsa, Herbert Schramm, Albert Fick, Allen Fick, Milton Chaloupka and Casper Balke.

Survivors include two daughters and sons - in - law, Ladgie and Marie Schovajsa, Katie and Emil Fick; one son, Walter Rasch; one sister, Mrs. Lena Huebner of West Columbia; one sister - in - law, Mrs. Alvina Schaffer of Brenham; three grandchildren; and one great - grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one son, one grandson, six sisters, and five brothers.

Services were under the direction of the Pete E. Etlinger Funeral Home of Bellville.

Sister Hvezdos was a member of the St. Andrews's Catholic Church and Lodge 154 for 31 years.

Rosary was recited Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Mount Olivet Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m.

Wednesday from St. Andrew's Catholic Church with Rev. Theodore Bradower, celebrant. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery..

Survivors are sisters, Mary Ne Smith of Fort Worth and Martha Novak of Seymour; brothers, Louis Novak of Seymour and John Novak of Seymour; and 18 nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Bob Briscoe, Jimmy Novak, Roy Novak, John Kuban, Martin Kuban and Patrick Wright.

Kdyt jsem posledne byla v Ennis tak jsem se dovedela, to zas jedna mlada divka eeske rodiny byla zabita ye veku 18ti let.
