Our members and readers are reminded of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas' (CEFT) effort and desire to establish an endowment "Chair" for the purpose of teaching the Czech lan g uage either at the University of Texas in Austin (UT) or A & M University in College Station.

A total of $500,000 is being sought to be met by matchin g funds from the University (another $500,000) for a total of one million dollars ($1,000,000). The University of Texas has been teaching the Czech language since 1914 and they need help; this would be the answer: Professor J.J. Skrivanek, president of CEFT, has notified your editor that donations have fallen off.

Saturday, September 20th will be the State Straight Dominoes Tournament in Buckholts with Lodge 15 membership hosting this second annual affair. We hope the event turns out to be another successful one. ***

To make sure that doctors and paramedics have adequate information to treat someone in an emergency, the American Medical Association recommends that everybody carry some sort of medical identification.

Millions of Americans already wear medical IDs. Most of them suffer from heart disease, diabetes, epilepsy or othei chronic conditions that could suddenly render them incapable of telling a paramedic or a physician wh-at's wrong or whom to contact. But anyone might be hospitalized after an accident. In such cases, emergency personnel need to know the accident victim's blood type, whether he or she has a sensitivity to certain drugs, and other pertinent facts. Here are some of the more widely used forms of ID: Many organizations issue medical ID cards, including some cards that employ Space Age technology. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maryland, for example, is testing a wallet - size ID that is laser encoded to provide instant access to up to 800 pages of medical data. The insurer hopes to offer the card nationwide, perhaps as early as 1988. Meanwhile, the AMA offers a simple, old - fashioned card with basic medical information for free. Approximately 1.5 million chronically ill Americans now wear bracelets and necklaces provided by the nonprofit Medic Alert Foundation International. The jewelry is engraved with the owner's medical condition, personal ID number and a 24 - hour phone number at the foundation's headquarters in Turlock, California, where doctors can call for detailed information about the patient. For more information, call (800) ID ALERT. Perhaps 3 million children carry Lifesaver ID tags, made of a washable fabric, that can be sewn into clothing or attached to shoes. Each tag lists the wearer's name, address and age and three phone numbers for parents. It also has room for basic medical information, including a statement providing parental consent for doctors to take action to insure the child's safety. Medical personnel are often constrained from treating children with noncritical injuries until parents give permission. The Lodge 88 Choral Group and the Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra will perform during the meal time.

Dinner will be served from 12 noon until 1:30 p.m. and each family is asked to bring a vegetable, salad or dessert. Meats will be furnished by the district and free tea, coffee and beer will be served. At 1 p.m. desserts will be auctioned.

At 1:30 p.m., a short business meeting will be held and, immediately thereafter, the games and fun will begin, some of which will be the candle, fish rod, balloon, potato games and the funny money spin wheel. Don't forget to bring 3 pantry items for 20 free tickets to play the spin wheel; also, there will be domino and washer pitch tournaments.

The District V Youth Club will show the Czech History Film and also Cartoons for the children.

The officers and members are planning on selling about three quarters of an acre of land to Milam County Precinct No. I for a street.

This property is located on the west side of the hall. At the present time it is a drainage ditch grown up in trees and brush. This street will improve our property.

Sweet Home Lodge No. 63 will hold its monthly meeting and social on the third Sunday, September 21, 1986.

74 Changes Meeting Dates

Lodge

The regular meeting of Lodge 74, Lovelady, was held on Monday, September 8th at 7:30 p.m. All reports were approved as read.

New business was Donald Haynie and wife will be cleaning the lodge on a regular basis.

All senior citizens 65 and over will be admitted to Lodge 74 for one - half the admission price. We hope we will be seeing more of our senior citizens at our lodge in the future.

The members voted to change our monthly meeting night from the second Monday to the first Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. This was done with the hope that attendance to the meetings would increase. Future meetings of Lodge 74 will be on the first Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. You all come!

To the members who haven't heard the good news: Sherry Michka of Lodge 74 won the honor of being State Queen. Sherry is the daughter of Jerry and Linda Michka and the granddaughter of Mrs. Slivenna Michka. We are all real proud of Sherry. In the past we have had

Brother Curly Gustafson led the twenty - five members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

After the roll call of officers, Secretary Gilbert Kubicek read the minutes of our July meeting. The minutes were approved as read.

Congratulations went to Tim Wilson who was awarded a scholarship by the Supreme Lodge to be used to further his education.

Two new members, Dawn and Graham Williams were voted on as new members. They were accepted, giving us a total of 592 members.

The following gave their reports: Financial Secretary Lambert Peterson, Treasurer Alice Kovar, Bar Chairman Curly Gustafson, Ticket Chairman Gladys Mogonye, House Chairman Irene Heldgren, Building and Grounds Chairman Rueben Krieg and Kitchen Chairman Dale Kessel.

All the reports were very positive and we thank all of those persons for their devoted time and work.

The State Domino Tournament was discussed. Our representatives to both games will be picked at our September meeting.

Everyone was reminded of the District II meeting to be held at Seaton Star Hall on September 14th. A good turnout was anticipated.

As a reward for our working members, our lodge will sponsor a fish fry on September 19th to show its appreciation for the countless hours devoted by so few. We encourage all of our members to get involved, because there is always a job for everyone.

Secretary Gilbert Kubicek won the door prize after which the meeting was adjourned.

The dominoes were starting to rattle with everyone enjoying the fellowship and good time.

81 Discusses Direct Billing

SPJST I odge No. 81 of Needville held their regular meeting on Tuesday evening, September 9, 1986 at 7 p.m. with President Charlie Matcek presiding.

The meeting was called to order and Vlasta Nowotny led the members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Our lodge members then stood in silent tribute to deceased members Roslee Jurchak and Norma Lee Mikel.

Officers' reports and minutes were given and approved, except the treasurer who was unable to be with us.

Secretary Mary Werner read a thank you note from March of Dimes for donation.

Benita Walzel gave a report from the Rules & Regulations Committee.

There are to be no changes.

Mr. Darwin Jurchak was reported to be ill. Speedy recovery is wished to you from the members.

President Charlie Matcek spoke on direct billing. After a discussion it was decided to get more information on the subject.

Mary Werner gave us a very interesting report of her recent trip, traveling with her were Mr. and Mrs. Norman Short to Soothington, Connecticut to visit her daughter; her husband, Tom; and their son, Graham Benevill. While there, they traveled to Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts to a museum, and to New York to the State Empire Building, St. Patrick's Cathedral, and Rockefeller Hotel. The weather was nice and cool, everything very pretty, and green with flowers everywhere. When they left Hartford, Connecticut the thermometer showed 56 degrees. When they arrived in Houston at the airport, it showed 95 degrees. We are glad you had such a wonderful and enjoyable time.

Herbert Nowotny drew the door prize winners' names; Victor Werner and Mary Matchek, who were the lucky ones.

No. 88, Houston News Lodge

We've had lots of members having health problems lately. Mary Kosut is at home after her surgery. Angeline Miculka didn't have to have her second surgery and is at home taking a series of medicine instead of treatments. Florena Taake is still progressing from her shoulder surgery.

Mary Johnson fell and broke her collarbone but was already back at Birthday Club lunch on the first Wednesday of September. Bobby Miksch, Joe and Della's son,is at home after a hospital stay after suffering a stroke. He is having therapy and may face surgery in the near future. Retired Dr. John Jerabek was taken to St. Joseph's after colla psin g at his home.

Della Kadlecek fell and injured her left knee and had surgery. She was an outpatient at Heights and recuperated at home. She's up and going again

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, September 17, 1986 with the aid of her crutches. Husband Amos had eye surgery on Thursday, September 4th, and is at home doing nicely. Mary Tilich is confined to a wheelchair when she's able to be out of bed. J.R. Bruce had stomach surgery and is due home in a few days.

Entertainment Chairman Harley Cox had emergency surgery on Saturday, August 30th. Reports sound good and I'm sure Harley will be up and around very soon. We wish them all a speedy recovery and future good health.

Our First Vice President Marceil Malak has been elected president elect of the Houston Chapter of the Texas Association of Public Accountants. Marceil has her own accounting service and is a busy lady with all her duties.

The swimming pool is closed after a peaceful summer due to the expert management of Mike and Kathy Trefell. We'll have to wait until the final figures are examined to see if the experiment worked. Mike is doing fine after his pacemaker surgery. Wife Kathy stepped in and kept things going with the help of the lifeguards. Bobby Allbritton especially was a big help to Kathy. The pool closed earlier than usual this year because all the help are college students needing to get back to school.

Choral Group Director Tim Kostom has announced the singers will practice twice a month with the Concert Band.

Both units have important appearances scheduled for this fall.

Czech classes start again on Monday, September 15th. Brother Bill Souchek is the instructor for this session. They meet every Monday evening at 7:30 except on the monthly meeting nights.

I know just about everyone had a nice summer vacation. Here are the highlights of two of them. Rose and Tim Kostom flew to CzechOslovakia for a four - week stay. While there they attended a wedding of a family member at The Old Town Hall in Prague. The wedding reception was held at the famous Pelikan Restaurant where plenty of food and beverage kept the guests from America and family members and friends busy for six hours. Rose and Tim attended a concert which is held daily at The Palace of Culture and were impressed by the impressive and modern interior.

They attended the play, "My Fair Lady" at the Hudebni Divadlo Karlin.

The play was naturally in Czech and was enjoyed. They spent an enjoyable evening at the U Fleka Cabaret, known for its entertainment plus the black beer and garlic toast. Tim also visited the town of Kostomlatsky. At the airport leaving for home, Rose and Tim found another lodge member (Jan Schroif) who was returning after a month's stay in Czechoslovakia. They all spent the six - hour layover in Amsterdam shopping. They all returned home with plenty of hand carried baggage.

Ann and Gus Urbanovsky toured the Pacific Northwest on a 24 - day bus trip. They left Houston on July 5th. In Pueblo, Colorado, Ann visited with two good friends who live there. They visited . the Royal Gorge, toured Salt Lake City, stayed at the MGM Grand Hotel in Reno, Nevada and saw Lake Tahoe. Gus and Ann spent three days in San Francisco. They saw the California redwood trees, some of which are 300 feet tall and over 3000 years old. They went on to Portland, Oregon, Seattle, Washington, saw Mt. Ranier from a distance, took a ferry to Victoria British Columbia and toured the 130 - acre Butchart Gardens. They cruised through the Georgia Straits to

Vancouver where they spent two nights. While there, they attended Expo 86 and took a city tour. They went to Glazier National Park, stopped at Lake Louise, and drove through the mountains and forest to Banff and Jasper National Park. They even enjoyed a snowmobile ride in the ice fields. They came home via Great Falls, Montana, Yellowstone National Park where they saw Old Faithful, Colorado Springs, Amarillo and enjoyed the play "Texas" at Palo Duro Canyon. Ann said they had nice cool weather in the Northwest and didn't enjoy coming home to that 100 degree weather we had.

Don't forget the Texas Brew plays country/western music in the Chandelier Ballroom on Friday, September 19th. This dance starts at 8:30 p.m. and it's still BYOB. The Vrazels appear on Saturday, September 20th playing polkas, waltzes, and some country/western music.

Lodge 88 made a $500 donation to MDA during the Labor Day Telethon here in Houston. President Jerry Ermis presented the check but did not get to appear on TV as we had hoped.

Some of this news was contained in a letter that I mailed to the Vestnik on August 18th. Due to the post office gremlins, again, that letter never got to West. This explains why no letter appeared in the Vestnik on August 27th. Sorry about that . . . All I can do is try again!

Experts to help Czech family genealogists and historians on various phases of Czech and Moravian genealogy will be assisting at the Czech Genealogy Mini - Symposium on September 27, 1986 in Hillje.

This affair will be held in the lodge hall of SPJST Lodge No. 40 on Saturday, September 27th.

Choral Club Plans State Fair Trip Fifteen members met to practice the songs for the special Sesquicentennial performance at the State Dair in Dallas on Sunday, October 5, 1986. The bus will be leaving Temple's downtown Goodyear parking lot at 5:30 a.m. to arrive in Dallas at 8 a.m. in time for rehearsal of joint choral groups from the entire state. The bus will be

situated about halfway to the Cotton Bowl, where the choral and the Beseda groups from Lodge 47 are to perform, and the bandshell where the Czechs always gather for Czech Day. As I had stated before in a report, the Choral Club or Beseda dancers will have the priority on the bus. If you belong to either group and want a seat on the bus, you need to call Martha Klusacek (817) 778 - 7395 in the mornings or after 5:30 p.m. before Tuesday, September 23rd. After that, Lodge 47 members will have until September 25th to have the money to her to assure your seat on the bus.

After you pay and you find out you are prevented from going, it's up to you to sell your ticket to someone else. All inquiries will be taken as space is available.

Box 85 West, Texas 76691 Dear Rudy: This is another way that Czech Texans can honor the memory of their forebears and that their names will be permanently inscribed in the book listing all donors and amounts that will accompany the endowment to the chosen university. *** STAVINOHA REUNION DONATES TO ENDOWMENT OF A CHAIR OF CZECH STUDIES The descendants of Ondrej and Marianna Stavinoha held their 9th annual reunion on Sunday, August 10, 1986, in Hostyn (Fayette County) Texas. The Ondrej Stavinoha family arrived in Galveston, after leaving the village of Palkovice in Moravia on September 16, 1860, aboard the Jeverland, a small sailing bark. They first settled at Ross Prairie in Fayette County and then moved to the Bluff area near present - day HoStyn.

In memory of Ondrej's and Marianna's pioneering and brave spirits, the descendants voted to donate $160 to the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) to assist the drive to endow a Chair of Czech Studies at either Texas A&M University or the University of Texas.

Robstown Lodge 117 Y C Activities Dear Readers.

It's school time again and the busy time of summer fun such as camps, district outings, district "YADs, State YADs, trips, movies, plus other fun thinus arc behind us. It was a fun -unuuer and now the youth, once again. must take 10 the b~oks.

Robstown Youth Club has been busy throughout the summer. The year ol our youth club activities ended with a graduation social honoring Brad Fllzcy at K - Bobs. Brad was president ol the club for 1985 - 86.

On June 8th several made a trip to Temple to attend the Fraternal Fest which was wry successful. Donald and Jennifer Marek helped with the movies and moonwalk, also the club had a dessert booth.

On June 14th a regular youth club meeting followed by a beach trip.

Eighteen youth, guests and adults enjoyed the beach; some played in the surf, while others made sand castles.

June 26th through 29th, we went to, H.E.B. Camp at Leakey. There aren't any charges for the use of the camp but C\ crybody is asked to bring enough lood for their group. The cooks did a good job of barbecuing; in fact, no one went home hungry. Robstown <. 'lub was represented by eight youth and tour adults.

Regular meeting was held on July 12th. We took a movie trip and ate out on July 5th.

July 20th was District VII YAD at Floresville. Robstown youth received ten lst places, several 2nd and 3rd. fop District VII Teen is Donald Marek and Top Junior is Jennifer Marek. I am proud of the youth who took time to participate at the Y Ai::.

July 26th we took a movie tnp and ate supper at Pizza Inn. Movies are always the favorite pastime for the youth dubbers.

District VII camp at Val Verde was combined with District IV with a wonderful group of children and adults. Camp began on August 1st and ended August 5th. The days went by rapidly and everyone was occupied with activities. I helped with the craft in decorating straw wreaths and stenciling.

Canoeing, archery, horseback riding, craft, swimming and games were the activities. It was a

membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister BESSIE DUSEK, who passed away on July 1, 1986 at the Colorado - Fayette Medical Center, Weimar, Texas after a short illness.

Funeral services were held on July 3rd at the Weimar United Church of Christ with Rev. Ernest Dean officiating. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery.

Born on February 13, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Alvina (Barton) Krizak. She was married to Emil E. Dusek on November 15, 1927. Her husband passed away on November 3, 1979.

Sister Dusek was a member of the Bila Hora SPJST Lodge No. 16 and the Dorcas Circle of the United Church of Christ.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ann Redder; a sister, Irene Francis of Seymour; two grandchildren and four great - grandsons.

Born October 5, 1934 in Inez, Texas to the late Charles Leo and Antonia Holy Janecka, he was self - employed as an independent insurance agent.

He was an officer of Lodge No. 143, serving as financial secretary, and also was a member of several organizations in Victoria.

Services were held on August 30th at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with the Rev. John Peters as celebrant. Burial was in the Resurrection Cemetery in Victoria, Texas.

Surviving are his wife, Esterleen A. Adamek Janecka of Victoria; five daughters, Karen Gifford of San Antonio, Jerilyn Joseph, Jill Friedel, Jean Janecka and Neysa Janecka, all of Victoria; three sons, Russel C., Darrell M., and Richard W. Janecka, all of Victoria; a brother, Melvin L. Janecka of Victoria and two grandchildren.

Brother Moss was born in Jackson, Tennessee and had lived in Corpus Christi for almost 14 years. He was retired from Goodyear Aerospace and the N.A.S. He was a lifelong member of American Sokol Corpus Christi Unit, SPJST Lodge No. 79, a lifelong member of VFW Post #2369, a member of the American Legion, and Bill Roper Country Post #364.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Marie Moss of Corpus Christi; one son, Grady Moss of Phoenix, Arizona; two stepsons, Leon Castro of Corpus Christi and Gordon Castro of Victoria; one stepdaughter, Linda Lynn of Natchez, Mississippi; three brothers, Bill Moss of Meridian, Mississippi, Charles Moss of Ingleside, Texas and Robert Moss of Corpus Christi; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 3rd in Seaside Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. R.T. Rudisell officiating.

Honorary pallbearers were Cecil Martin, Frank L. Sacky, Frank Sijansky, Bob Clarke, Herb Gatliff and Louis A. Sacky.

Kulhanek Reunion The fourteenth Kulhanek reunion of the Antonin and Celestina Kulhanek descendants will be held on Sunday, September 28, 1986, at Sts. Peter and Paul Dining Hall in Frelsburg, Texas.

A Holy Mass for deceased family members will begin at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

*** QUESTION OF CONTROL Many operators of heavy - duty trucks believe that disconnecting brakes on the front wheels makes the vehicles easier to control while stopping. But, according to recent research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, that's a misperception.
