In this issue we have the results and photos of another successful State Youth Achievement Day held at the Convention Center in Temple. From hearing many comments, the past SYAD went over quite well. Of course, this was possible due to the cooperation of the young participants.

There were indeed a large number of individuals involved behind the scenes, and our SPJST is very fortunate to have such dedicated people on all levels who work with youngsters, especially traveling so far for many years. They are, to be commended for their efforts.

The annual SYAD scholarship plus the Junior/Teen of the Year awards were presented to Lodge 9 youth of Snook which also captured King and Duke titles. Lodge 74 at Lovelady didn't do too badly either who brought home the youngest winning State Queen, a little girl we watched grown up to a fine lady. Her Duchess was equally proud of the reigning titles as were the parents of these young people.

An increasing number of individuals are enrolling in trade schools, hoping to learn skills that will get them better jobs.

More than 2 million Americans are currently attending vocational schools; that's an 18 percent increase over the last two years. Among the most popular courses these days are those that train students for computer services, parale g al work and biomedical technology. However, many schools still offer training in traditional subjects such as auto mechanics and barbering. Most students enrolled in vocational courses are high school graduates who don't see themselves as college material but who feel they need additional training to land jobs. Others are college graduates who find their academic credentials aren't helping them obtain well-paying jobs.

Trade - school programs vary in length from four months to two years, the a y era .i., e being around 10 months. courses usually emphasize solving everyday work problems similar to those encountered on the job.

Academic subjects typically aren't taught, unless specifically necessary to do the work.

Most vocational schools are private, for - profit institutions. Big corporations, such as ITT and Bell & Howell, have gotten into the business, but most institutions are still owned by small companies. And they aren't cheap. Some charge over $6,000 per year for programs such as computer sciences. But students can apply for federal assistance -- loans, grants and work - study program -- just as regular college students do. An inexpensive alternative is to enroll in a two - year community college's vocational program, but students usually must take some academic courses along with job training.

The best vocational schools can provide skills necessary to get technical jobs and to advance more quickly.

"Unfortunately," warns a public

statement by the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection, "some schools promise high - paying jobs and rosy futures, then cannot deliver." How do you find a good school?

First, ask whether the school is accredited. Of an estimated 9,000 vocational schools, only about 5,000 meet minimum standards set by an accrediting agency recognized by the Department of Education. Get catalogs from at least three institutions and compare them. Try to visit the schools for a firsthand appraisal. Are facilities and equipment up - to - date?

Do workshops simulate a work environment? Is there a refund policy it' you drop out? What percentage of graduates find jobs related to their studies? The average is about 80 percent. Don't let a high - pressure sales representative recruit you on the spot. Talk to students, faculty members and graduates. The National Association of Trade and Technical Schools publishes a free, 80 - page guidebook, "Trade and Technical Careers and Training." *** High Interest Rates. American consumers pay millions of dollars in unnecessary interest charges each year because they do not know how to use credit efficiently. Too many consumers build up credit - card debts of thousands of dollars at interest rates of 18 percent to 21 percent or more.

One solution: Those sums can be refinanced with installment loans at 12 to 15 percent. The difference between carrying $3,000, for example, in credit - card debt and the same amount in an unsecured loan can be $150 or more per year. Since interest rates vary considerably, even on installment loans, shop around. However, unless you resist the urge to build up new balances on your credit cards, refinancing can get you deeper into hock. *** Are you planning to use a loan from a qualified retirement plan to pay for home improvements or a second residence? If so, and if you want to repay the loan over a period of more than five years, arrange to receive the loan before the end of 1986. Both the House and Senate versions of the tax reform bill now being reconciled on Capitol Hill require that such loans he repaid within five years. *** Approximately 200,000 children's car seats are being recalled for safety leasons, says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration because the seats failed a federally required simulated crash test. The companies will modify or replace the seats at no charge to consumers. *** Youngsters who attend day - care centers are more likely to catch or transmit infectious diseases than those kids who stay at home. Infections range from the common cold to bacterial meningitis, which can be fatal.

To minimize the danger, parents who send their children to day - care centers should check to see if the centers maintain a hygienic environment. Because some germs can survive for a long time, frequent hand washing and cleaning of toys and surfaces like tabletops can reduce the spread of disease, according to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. ***

Photo Contest I am proud to announce that Ann Schoeneman, Lodge 9 of Snook, has been selected first place winner in the SPJST photography contest. The contest was open to adult members of fraternal benefit societies.

Mrs. Schoeneman has been awarded a check for $100. Her winning photograph will be entered in a nationwide contest sponsored by the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA). Winning entries of the national contest will receive a cash award and will be displayed at the NFCA 100th Anniversary Convention in Washington, D.C., September 24th - 28th.

The theme of the contest is Joining Hands to Touch Lives. Entrants were asked to depict how their fraternal activities and involvement serve the people in their communities to improve the quality of life.

The date is September 14th at Lodge 47, Seaton, beginning at 2 p.m. The District II officers are very enthused about this upcoming event. The district officers would like to invite you and encourage you to come. The fun carnival will be exciting and an enjoyable afternoon is planned for you. There will be carnival games, drinks and food. Almost everything is free but we ask and need YOUR HEL P to make this day a success. We are asking each family to bring a dessert and/or salad and 2 pantry items to be used in the games' booths.

Would you please attend and bring the items asked and we can almost assure you that you will enjoy the afternoon.

The short meeting will start at 2 p.m.; then, we will have a little time lor fellowship and to give us time to set up the games for you. At about 3 p.m., we plan to start the games. At about 5 p.m., we have planned a horseshoe tournament, sponge throw and milk bottle throw on the outside. At 6 p.m., we plan to have our meal, so you see we plan to have a busy afternoon.

Our district trip to Six Flags will be September 21st; please note this change of date. We will leave from the Temple Mall just north of Sears . at 7 a.m. and shall return there about 9 p.m.

The State YAD is now over and I wish to congratulate all the winners, also all who competed; you were all district winners. A special congratulations to Sherry Michka, our new State Queen and her Duchess Amber Christian from Lodge 74, I.ovelady and to our 1st runner - up King Lance Ebner and his Duke Michael Washam who are from Lodge 20, Granger. We had several other 1st place winners from our district and their names appear in SYD Sue Meadows's report of State winners.

We finally received some welcomed rainfall which should cool the weather a little. The children are now back in school and the youth will be busy with their school activities. Plan to be with us September 14th!

Dear Readers: President Johnnie Krizan called our July 6th and August 10th meetings to order. Lanette and Keith Hykel and Kevin and Tammi Dobecka led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag. The membership stood in silent respect for our departed Sister Dorothy Glatter.

All reports were given and approved.

Brother George Straten gave the trustees' report. Lodge 6 will rent a booth from Brother Robert Dobecka for West fest .

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz gave the youth report. The youth took cakes to

the rest home June 4th and July 2nd.

They attended YAD and had 3 first place winners. Lanette Hykel received 3rd place in Queen. Keith Hykel and Kevin Dcbecka received 2nd in Group Talent and Tammi Dobecka received Honorable Mention in Talent. The youth also attended State YAD on August 17th. Lanette Hykel received 1st place on her Handicraft entry.

Kevin and Tammi Dobecka received plaques for being among the ten top in State Merit Points.

July 20th was our picnic and we did very well. Lillie Matus was in charge of the fish pond. Raymond Matus was in charge of "Dunking Sam." Sister Willie Mae Schuetz sent get well cards to Josie Mae Straten, Jerry Drozd, Bessie Velek, Josh Hykel, Mrs. Frank Mynar and Eloise Mynarcik.

A sympathy card was sent to Dorothy Glatter.

President Krizan installed the new youth officers, namely, President -Lanette Hykel, Vice President -Shirley Dobecka, Secretary -- Kevin Dobecka, Treasurer -- Keith Hykel, Reporter -- Tammi Dobecka.

Sister Rose Uptmor read the door prize winners' names. Sister Lanette Hykel won the $2 door prize. Brother Gary Parma was drawn for the $10 door prize and Brother George Straten won the $10 door prize and Sister Barbara Mechell was drawn for the $4 door prize. The door prizes for the August meeting were $2 won by Stella Perez, and Rita Jones was drawn for the $10 door prize.

Board of Trustees' meeting will be September 5th at 8 p.m. Our next monthly meeting will be September 14th.

Lodge 14, Wesley To Meet Dear Members: Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, September 21st at Mrs. Erna Pomykal's home. The meeting will start at 2 p.m.

The June meeting was held at Leroy Kamas's home. A good barbecue dinner was served. Everyone enjoyed all the good food and fellowship.

I hope to see all of you at Erna's house in September.

Attention

Members of Lodge 15 are advised to attend the October 8, 1986 - 7 p.m. meeting.

The officers and members are planning on selling about three quarters of an acre of land to Milam County Precinct No. I for a street.

This property is located on the west side of the hall. At the present time it is a drainage ditch grown up in trees and brush. This street will improve our property.

It is your duty as a member to attend this meeting to vote and express your opinion. Please come and have fellowship with us.

Lodge 28 East Bernard Meeting Dear Members: For the first time in many years, Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its monthly meeting on the first Sunday in September. Usually, the Labor Day weekend falls on the first Sunday, this year, however, the first Sunday is the 7th. The meeting will be held in our lodge hall at 2 p.m. A standard "Order of Business" will be followed with the main item on the agenda being the District VI fall meeting September 28th. There will be some other special reports besides the regular ones.

The gathering of the E.O. of L.M. will convene at the buffet luncheon table after the business meeting.

A total of 29 minutes was used to conduct the August monthly meeting on August 3rd. Brother Albert Lupik, the lod ge recording secretary, was on vacation somewhere on the East Coast. Sister Frances Haverda, lodge vice president, was gracious enough to read the minutes of our previous meeting and record the minutes of this meeting. It was reported that the lodge lost two members since the last meeting. They are Sister Amalia "Molly" Laid°If and Brother William "Willie" Kelner. Our condolences go to their families.

A report was g iven as to the status of the presentation ceremony for Sister Mary A. (Fojtik) Eastman who will be 96 years old on Au gust 22nd and will have outlived her policy with SPJST. It was then reported that there was no progress on the roof repairs.

Brother Anton Kelner Jr., lodge financial secretary, reported on the "Why" of "Direct Billing" and its advanta ges to the lodge as a whole.

All other reports were accepted as given.

Door prize winner, Sister Agnes Polasek, returns to our ranks after a long absence.

All members who stayed enjoyed the luncheon. The buffet luncheon table had more than enough food on it, thanks to Sisters Janik, Srubar, Luquette and Nezval.

We have received word that another member has left our ranks. Brother Rudolph Frank Barta passed away at the age of 78. Our condolences go to his family.

Also, as of this writing, there will be NO presentation ceremony for Sister Mary Eastman due to the "Exactness" of a letter received by this writer. With hopes that we are not stepping out of hounds, the membership wishes Sister Eastman a "Happy 96th Birthday" and may she reach and live through the age of a 105 as she had predicted many years ago.

■ )u. lodge received a letter from SL ' esident Howard Leshikar commending it on the donation to the American Cancer Society. The Victoria Convention and Visitors' sent a form so the lodge can get its 1987, Czech Fest on the bureau's schedule.

It was decided to buy a 42 - cup coffee pot for use at the Czech Fest and the Victoria Fest.

The lod ge voted to donate $100 to CEFT to help establish the Czech Langua ge chair.

Sandra Schmidt and Sylvia Kocian will furnish the Sept ember refreshments. Valeria Motal furnished the delicious refreshments after the meeting. Evelyn Horelka won the adult door prize and Jason Motal, the youth door prize.

40 Holds August Meeting Lodge

The meeting of the El Campo Hillje Lodge No. 40 began at 9:50 p.m., following Monday night bingo.

Brother Bennie Reck led the pledge.

Departed member, Ronnie Kacal, was remembered during our minute of silence.

Secretary Laverne Bacak called the roll of officers, all were present or excused. Minutes of our June and July meetings were approved as read.

President Rita Vanek read a thank you for flowers received by Madeline Shimek during her hospital stay.

Youth Club sent a thanks for our support and for hall use. Josephine Malota memorial thanks was received from Supreme Lod ge SPJST Scholarship Fund.

First Vice President Bennie Reck spoke of more hall bookings. Albert Winters will host a FREE dance on October 5th from 4 to 8 p.m. and the LeeRoy Nlatocha Band will play.

Youth Leader Mary Ann Karasek had words of praise for 7 entries in the State YAD competition. Two entries placed, Kim Kacal and Laurie Holub.

The youth did well in the kitchen on \AD. The last party for the summer was a swimmin g party at the Dwight Holub residence.

New member this month is Nathan Duane Schroedter. President Vanek gave a capsuled treasurer's report for Madelien Shimek. Due to the good response at bingo, we are paying off our building note at a faster rate.

Czech Fest At Lodge 84, Dallas

Dear Members and Friends: Can you believe that early fall is around the corner and so is the Lodge 84 Czech Fest. We extend a cordial welcome to all our members and friends. This is a day of love, friendship, fraternalism and benefit for all.

Our members will prepare a Czech dinner of roast beef, country sausage, parsley potatoes, green beans, sauerkraut, bread, pastry and coffee or tea; the charge will be $5 for adults and $2.50 for children age 12 or under.

There will he various booths and entertainment. We will appreciate donations toward the gift booth, plant store, pastry booth and country store.

Please volunteer to help work for an hour or two at any of our stations. Feel free to call me at 352 - 5295. The dance will he free to all from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

For the members' information, once again, we wish to thank our many members for a wonderful response in sending • in the lodge dues and donations the past several months.

Three officers have worked many hours on this project and I must say, it's a rewarding feeling.

Our upcoming dances are September 6th -- Czech Mates, September 20th Nlikula, and October 4th -- Lone Star Czechs. Our, dance time is 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., but the October 4th dance will he 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. The change on October 4th is due to the next day being Czech Day at the State Fair. It doesn't seem 'possible that the summer vacation for our children and grandchildren is over. School is back in full swing and most of the moms are glad" that' made it through another summer.

Sister Mary Tilich is at home snow after her long hospital stay. We wish her a quick return to good health.

Lyn Pflughaupt, our Lod ge 88 treasurer, had a good report following his shoulder surgery to remove a bone tumor. He's ready to get back for his senior year at the University of Houston. Can't keep a good guy down!

Brother Jerry Kolancy had a cataract removed from his left eye last week and is doing fine at home.

Spouse, Bessie, is playing nurse and waiting on his every wish. It's almost a miracle what they can do for cataracts now and in such a short time.

Update On Czech Play At Lodge No. 88, Houston Dear Friends and Readers: This is the last time we will he able to remind you of our Czech play at Lodge 88, 1435 Beall Street at 15th, Houston, I e. as on Sunday, September 14th.

92 Plans Domino "Tryouts" Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: Most of you know that there is going to he a State Championship "42" games meet soon. Some have already determined their local lodge entries.

133 Domino Playoff Representation Lodge

San Antonio Lodge held their local domino playoff Friday, August 22nd at (-levers Hall. The games were very interesting and very exciting. The judge for this event was President Anthony Trilicek.

In the 42 Domino game winners are Brother Alvin and Sister Frances Schimcek.

Lodge 133 Holds Regular Meeting The San Antonio lodge held their regular meeting at the Activity Hall, 1314 Fair Avenue,on August 17th. Our meetings are held every third Sunday of the month beginning at 2 p.m.

Our meeting was called to order by President Anthony Trilicek at 2 p.m.; he then led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance, also a moment of silence was held for our departed ,,inters and brothers.

Roll call of officers revealed that all were present. President Trilicek called on Secretary Netek to read the minutes of our last meeting; he then read the minutes, there were no corrections nor deletions and they were accepted as read.

Treasurer's report was given by Sister Cathy Uribe, there were no corrections or deletions and was accepted as read.

Social Committee -- Sister Annie Stryk reported that there were plenty of refreshments for everyone and hoped that all will enjoy them.

Committee Entertainment Chairman Sister Alma Trilicek gave her report, which was very encouraging. The lodge always has a games party after the meetings and it helps us in our entertainment fund.

Many of our members and non members have inquired about ballroom dances at Lodge 172, so the entertainment group will schedule a ballroom dance, once a month in September, October and November.

Amendment to our local lodge Rules & Regulations, which was discussed at the previous two meetings, was submitted by Secretary Netek. The amendment, which involved the responsibility of our treasurer, was once again discussed. A motion was made by Brother Bill Mares to accept the new amendment, seconded by Sister Viola Fajkus. Motion carried.

New Business -- President Trilicek discussed the possibility of the members going on a short trip some Sunday afternoon to the Thousand Trails Camp. He mentioned that it was SPJST a very nice place to get together to MORTGAGE INTEREST have a covered dish and just have fun.

Latest News From Mid-Cities Lodge 183 The regular monthly meeting was held on Monday, August 11th at the hall. President Daniel Roznovsky was on vacation and the meeting was conducted by 2nd Vice President Harry Musick.

District III Director Sid Pokladnik was present for the meeting and offered some very good suggestions and some words of encouragement, also told the sales representatives to keep trying to get new members, to get the new members involved in lodge work, and social activities of the lodge.

Our members present gave Brother Sid a big welcome and hope that he can come back soon.

Thank you letters were read from the Texas Parks and Wildlife for a donation our lodge made to the "Save The Battleship Texas" fund, from Arlington KC Hall for a small donation our lodge gave them, also from the Brazos County Sesquicentennial Commission informing us of the Czech Music in Texas, a Sesquicentennial Symposium to be held November 14 - 16, 1986 at the Brazos County Center in Bryan, Texas.

John Pustejovsky volunteered to build a 4 x 6 foot sign to be placed at the corner of Mayfield Road and Pleasant Valley Lane to tell the public where Lodge 183 is located, the sign will be painted by Harry Musick.

The $14 door prize was won by Rosetta Tarry, so if you do not come to our meetings, you cannot win a door prize.

Circle, Lodge 92, Ft. Worth Ladies'

Once again we are about to reach the end of another season as summer fades into fall. The excitement of school children with visions of summer vacations with "fun and frolic" and all of the anticipations of visiting friends and relatives have gradually faded away with only memories remaining of yesterday. Now school bells are tolling, telling children and parents that they must forget the pleasure of summer and settle down to the business of getting an education which is a necessity in order to survive in our world of today.

The Ladies' Circle came to order Greer, president, Florence with presiding. H ermina Cihacek substituted as secretary for Frances Blake, who is out of town. Dona Hubenak, vice president, and Evelyn Spacek, treasurer, were also present. president, Greer, Florence welcomed all the guests. They were Micki Peters, Holly Hubenak, Douglas Gilcrease and Melanie Nieswiodomy.

The members voted to give $500 to Lodge No. 92 when they start remodeling the kitchen in our building.

We were sorry to hear of the death of Elsie Krivanek's 18 - year - old grandson, who was killed in a car accident. May he rest in peace. We were also sorry to hear of the freak accident that Mary Hale had at one of our leading grocery stores. She spent the night in a hospital and then was able to go home. We should all remember to be careful when we enter a store with electronic doors.

The door prize, donated by Rose Jaworski, was won by Catherine Kosarek. Hermina Cihacek will donate the door prize for September.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Mary Hale, Frances Laux and Mike Paprskar. We hope they have many more.

Marie Prill and her daughter and son - in - law, Eva and Virgil Dockery, will leave for Germany in September.

- We wish them a happy journey.

I have just learned that Raymond Hubenak is in the All Saints Hospital for tests and Evelyn Spacek's mother, Mrs. Foyt, is also in the hospital. We hope they will soon be well.

Congratulations to Staci Hubenak on winning first runner - up for SPJST State Queen and to Kelli Kubala who was her duchess at the State Youth Achievement Day in Temple on August 17th. Staci also took first place in Individual Talent. Holly Hubenak took third place in Art. We also wish to congratulate Chris Simek from Lodge 154 on winning first place in Constructed Items.

Mary Palachek and Dona Hubenak both entertained us with special items of interest. Dona told about the fun the Hubenak family had in Temple at the wedding of their nephew, Shane Maxwell. I think they had two days of celebration.

Friendship Club Of Ft. Worth Report Continued from last week On July 3, 1986, Roy and I departed D/FW via Midway Airlines to Chicago, Illinois. Taking an early flight we were able to visit with our son, Tony, his wife, Kathy and three grandsons before departing Chicago O'Hara airport via Lufthansa (747) that same day for Frankfurt, Germany. After 81/2 hours of flight time over land and the Atlantic Ocean, we landed in Frankfurt on July 4th with a short stay before making flight connections to Zurich, Switzerland.

Boardin g another Lufthansa (727) we were landing in Zurich within an hour's flight time. In Zurich we were transferred by bus from the airport to Nova Park Hotel. The same evening we attended a get - acquainted dance at the Kongresshaus, and we also took time to view the displays and exhibits of Sokol memoirs. It was indeed a heart - warming feeling to see the American Sokol Organization souvenir book of the XV National Slet that was held in Ft. Worth in June 1981. I could not resist turning to a memorial picture of my father and show it to new friends who were also viewing the displays. I might add that the Slet of 1981 in Ft. Worth is still remembered by many Sokols who attended the Zurich Slet.

July 5th after attending an evening slet concert at Kongresshaus, the big

attraction afterwards was the large firework display held at the nearby river. The city of Zurich celebrated its 1000 year of existence. Thousands of people on both sides of the river lined the waterfront to view this great attraction. Those of us on the tour did not celebrate the 4th of July the American way, but the 5th of July in Zurich will be long remembered.

On Sunday, July 6th the VI International Sokol Slet took place at the Letizigund Stadium immediately adjacent to our hotel. The same thing happened as in Vienna in 1982; it rained, but the rain did not dampen the enthusiasm of the gymnasts nor the spectators. The spectators were under a roof, and the slet was delayed slightly due to the rain but no harm was done hsr tha warm rain It was a proud feeling to see Rome Milan of Ft. Worth Sokol carrying the American flag with the American gymnasts following in the parade of flags. I will not dare state how many countries were represented, nor how many American gymnasts took part in the slet. I can only state that from the Southern District Sokol, there were ei ght of us who made the trip. They were Sylvia Laznovsky of Ennis, Rome and Talon Milan, Mr. and Mrs. Traynham and son, Jesse and Roy and I, all of Sokol Ft. Worth.

The farewell dance at the Kongresshaus after the slet brought 4 days of activities to an end. The American Sokol dignitaries recognized were: Geor ge Basta, Sylvia Pistorius, Edward Linhart, Paul Lebloch and Emilie Ruzicka. I do believe having a camera at the right place and tittle will be appreciated by these Sokol members when they see my picture of them.

On Monday, July 7th the destination for many varied. Some traveled to other countries on their own, but Roy and I,along wih 49 other people,had a tour scheduled with Mrs. Blanche Cihak's World Travel Agency. Two Cedok buses with the drivers and two tour guides came to Zurich from Czechoslovakia to pick us up and begin a tour of Austria, Hungary and Czechoslovakia which would end on July 20th.

After departing Zurich, our tour guide visited with each bus passenger to make their acquaintance. She also asked in which state each resided. Roy and I, being the only Texans on this tour, our guide quickly made the statement that she had been in Azle, Texas. Right then we knew that she was the Vera Seifortova who visited Lad Maly with his cousin from Czechoslovakia in August 1984 and of whom I had reported her visit in my August 1, 1984 report. The reason for not meeting her before was that Roy and I were traveling on the east coast in August 1984. Vera mentioned many names of people she had met while in Texas. She especially enjoyed playing the game Bingo.

For three days we had sightseeing tours of Innsbruck, Salzburg and Vienna, Austria. We had been to these cities before, but there were still many new attractions. An evening in Grinzing at one of the wine cellars in Vienna was one place the tour group had a chance to put their vocal cords to use along with my solo of "The Eyes Of Texas."

Departing Vienna for the Hungarian capital city of Budapest, we saw fields of sunflowers and corn, also many high rise apartment buildings.

Budapest has much to offer to a tourist for the first time. The American built Atrium - Hyatt hotel was just gorgeous and, in my opinion, the No. I hotel of the eight listed for

this tour. Many of us enjoyed the American - style breakfast at the hotel.

We ended our one overnight stay in Budapest by attending a Hungarian Czardas party which included food, wine and music.

We left Budapest for Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, the capital of Slovakia, and since this was on a Saturday, the Skoda cars were packed to the roof tops and were coming and going across the border at a very fast pace. This was the only place we had a delay in traveling. After almost 21/2. hours in getting passports and visas checked, the two buses were rolling again.

In 1982, Roy and I stayed in hotel Kyjev in Bratislava, so the surroundings were familiar. It was here that I had my first opportunity to call nearby relatives living in Slovakia (a cousin in Prievidza). Another gala dinner in the Zochova Chata was enjoyed, but the unfriendly attitude of several waitresses made many of us wonder if we Americans were liked.

On Sunday, July 13th we departed Bratislava and traveled the width of Czechoslovakia to the high Tatra Mountains. We made a luncheon stop en route at the famous spa and resort of Piestany.

The high Tatra Mountains of Slovakia are sometimes called "Little Switzerland." Our hotel, Bellevue,was located in a surrounding of tall forest pines of Horny Smokovec. In this area we went si g htseeing in Kezmarok, a stop in Levoca, a town which has been restored and rebuilt the way it was in the 16th century. We also visited the castle of Spissky.

Our last evening in the hotel, while having dinner, a tall figure came and stood at our table. I looked up, only to recognize a cousin I met for the first time in 1975. My surprise and happy embrace brought cheers and claps from the entire American tour group who were in the dining room. The rest of the evening was spent visiting with my cousin and his wife. He promised to fulfill my mother's one request to try to bring home (which I was able to do) some dried houby (mushrooms).

After breakfast on Tuesday, July 15th, we departed the Tatra Mountains for the city of Olomouc. Our route of travel was via Roznova to Skansen, a museum in the country. Here I met a lady named Budilovsky who was working in a souvenir candy booth.

She pulled an address book from her purse and read my people's names she had visited in Texas in 1981. From her list of names, I was sorry to have to relate to her that Brother Oldrich Parma of Dallas had passed away.

On July 16th we arrived in Praha and Roy and I were lucky to be assigned a suite in the beautiful Alcorn Hotel, located near the Vaclayske Square. The following morning we took a tour of Karlovy Vary. I feel that most everyone who has ever been to Czechoslovakia, has also been to this famous spa and resort. My efforts were in vain, but I did try calling Maria Rambouskove, a Czech lady, I took to several Czech socials while she was visiting here in 1984.

Many tracks were made during the four days' stay near the center of Praha. Besides all the sightseeing and shopping, we attended a Prague theatre and saw the show, "Magic Lantern." This excellent performance was one - half live and the one - half movie part was on the order of the Omni Theater shows in Ft. Worth.

The last day in the hotel it rained, but it did not dampen our spirits. We had an escorted sightseeing tour of the castle, Konopiste, with its great collection of furniture, art and

On July 20th the "Heart of Europe" tour came to an end. Of the 49, about half said good - bye to those who departed to the Praha airport to fly back to the USA. Those of us who remained for a longer stay had relatives to meet us, and we all departed in different directions.

Roy and I extended our stay, eight more days, so we visited both my mother's and father's relatives by spending overnight stays in three different homes. Not only did we continue to visit our relatives in Praha, but also traveled to Uherske Hradiste and to Litvinov.

We not only saw Mrs. Vera Matustik and her mother, Mrs. Frantiska (Obal) Vitovska depart from the Praha airport to Vancouver, B.C. to attend the wedding of their daughter and granddaughter, Vera; but we also had a ride with husband, Frank Matustik back to Uherske Hradiste, Moravia where we visited cousins.

To make a long story short, that took thousands of miles for it to happen and it makes the world seem small, since we saw Mrs. Vera Matustik, Frantiska Vitovska and the new bride, Vera Richards at a gathering in their honor at Sokol Hall in Ft. Worth on August 13th.

An unexpected death to a relative happened while visiting in Praha, therefore, on July 24th, we attended a surviving iuneral of my only Czechoslovakia aunt, Zdenka Tyrkova, age 72 years. The funeral services were held in a crematorium.

Afterwards at the family dinner, I met many cousins for the first time. You can bet that 1 really got in a good session of Czech language, the Texas style!

Prior to our journey homeward on July 28th at Praha airport, Martina Navratiloâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;a was standing 3 feet from us. She was waiting for the same flight to Frankfurt, Germany. After a transfer in Frankfurt her connections were not known to us. I am only sorry I did not let her know that we were also Czech - Texans.

I carried a small plastic bottle of American brand instant coffee in my purse the entire trip. I refilled it from a large bottle that I kept in the hotel room. Before leaving Czechoslovakia, the relatives enjoyed the coffee immensely and were amazed that the grains dissolved and that there was no coffee mud in the bottom of the cup.

They will now look for the American brands of instant coffee when shopping in the Tuzex stores.

In closing, 1 must add that we had no ailments whatsoever. If so, the Becherovka was plentiful for the stomach, and just a sniff of the Slivovice would cure all the other ailments.

My display of gifts are beautiful, and my mother has lipova kvet, meduna and hermanek for making tea which has to last until the.next trip.

I cannot but boast about my Czech language; I was proud of the high praises given to me by relatives and strangers, especially after they were told I was a native Texan. Roy survived the entire second trip, and he loved it all. Many new friends were made which we will cherish for a lifetime.

Board DISTRICT II The District II fall meeting will be held on Sunday, September 14, 1986 with Seaton Lodge No. 47 (Star Hall) hosting the meeting. ***

Mayor of Temple to open the afternoon session of talent.

The Royalty competition was held at the end of the day. Excellent piano music set the mood for the contestants to march in by. The king and queen contestants were all shining examples of what the youth program is all about. The results were very close and I hope that all contestants will try again next year.

The State YAD is a very special day for all our youth and it isn't possible without the support of all the parents and youth leaders. My sincere thanks to the parents, youth leaders and the 60 people who worked behind the scenes to make this State YAD a most successful event.

State YAD Held Aug. 17th At Mayborn Center The Mayborn Convention Center was the site for the 1986 State YAD. It was an exciting day for the 185 participants and the audience of over 600.

The youth performed 22 individual talent numbers and 10 group acts. The talent contestants offered a variety of performances; from pantomime, tap and jazz dancing to clogging and an accordian solo. The 5 Beseda circles which performed in their colorful costumes were a delight to watch.

Canoeing was a favorite sport this year. The lake had a lot of clear and beautiful water.

Lodge 13 YC Hold Meeting [Delayed] The last monthly meeting of the Dime Box youth was held on August 17th, at 3:15 p.m. President Susan Spacek called the meeting to order. eryone then recited the Pledge of Allegiance led by Matthew Ford.

Secretary Trudy Krenek gave her report, and it was approved as read. [here were 16 members, 5 social members, 6 adults and no visitors present.

Due to the absence of our treasurer, there was no report.

Unde r new business the New Tabor Youth Club invited us to a swimming party at the Caldwell pool. It was August 18th, we left the hall at 5:15 p.m. and returned around 8:45 p.m.

We also decided to have a dance to raise money; a date and band has not been decided yet.

The new Scrapbook Committee will be Trudy Krenek, Mike Whitsel, Susan Spacek and Monica Spitzenberger.

I or the Firemen's Picnic which was set for August 31st we agreed to have a dart throw, and we decided to blow.the balloons there.

Door prizes were won by Shauna Lawhon, Mike Whitsel, Sue Ellen Flippin. Trudy and Susan then adjourned the meeting.

[Delayed] Dear Vestnik Readers, The SPJST Lodge 40 El Campo Hillje Youth Club held its monthly meeting on August 7th. We met at 6:30 p.m. in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Holub. After the meeting we had a swimming party and hot dog supper.

In attendance we had a total of 33 people. There were 12 youth club members, 15 adults and 6 guests present.

Jared Dybala was our only birthday celebrant. Our meeting was adjourned after some other brief discussion. A hot dog supper was furnished by the youth club and the mothers brought desserts. Later we all enjoyed swimming in the Holubs' pool. Our next meeting was set for September 4th at 7 p.m.

Lodge 47 Seaton Summer Outing [Delayed] Dear Vestnik Readers, This summer has been very busy for odge 47 Youth Club. We went to Wet n' Wild from the money we raised from our fund raiser.

District II YAD was held in Academy on July 13th.

Congratulations to all the winners. I was proud to have placed first in Junior Points from our lodge, and second place in Junior Talent.

We just got back from Junior Camp. It was great! This year we got to go canoeing, horseback riding, swimming, hiking, play T - Ball, and lots of fun parties. We had swim races and a shaving cream party on our last night. 1 wish we could have stayed longer.

My brother, David, got to go this year; he is 6 years old. He loved it. We met a lot of new friends from District II. We still had planned a lot for this year: State YAD, Six Flags' trip, and the District II fall meeting at our lodge. I hope to see you at this event.

Dear Readers, The August 13, 1986 meeting of odge 24 Youth Club was called to order by President Christy Marek.

Carl Macek and Kenny McNeill led the Pledge of Allegiance.

In attendance we had 21 members present; 3 adults, Mrs. Monica Mikeska, Mrs. Jane Bruggman, Mrs. Nancy Posvar; and one euest, Chad Bruegman.

Treasurer Janet Macek gave the treasurer's report. Our new balance was S421.14 after all expenses were paid. Our social for August was a swimming party held at Walker Pool in Temple on August 31st.

The District II Six Flags' trip was changed from August 24th to Sept ember 21st. We will leave at 7 a.m. and return at 9 p.m.

A discussion was held concerning entering a float in a Christmas parade.

More information will be given later on e had five District II YAD winners who represented our lodge and district ery superbly in the State YAD on August 17th. they are Janet Macek, 1st place - Handicraft; Christy Marek, 1st place - Hobby Kits; Kristie Waits placed 2nd in Foods; and Melanie /a odny is a 2nd place winner in Science/Education; Michael Harvell won a 3rd place ribbon in Constructed Items. This year at State there were seven Craft entries, two Royalty participants, and a Scrapbook entry from our lodge. Kim Kacal won 2nd place in the 10 to 12 Science/Educational Category. Lori Holub won 3rd place in 15 - 17 Handicrafts.

30 Youth Capture Many State Awards Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST members went to Temple, Texas on August 17th to attend the 1986 State Youth Achievement Day at the Convention Center.

This year's State YAD was very exciting. Jeanine Dorotik, Valerie Roye and Lenice Kaspar won first place in Junior Group Talent to a tap dance entitled "Poodle Hop." We also won first place in Senior Group Talent -- Jean Dorotik, Michelle Srubar, Marcy Dorotik, Jennifer Dluhos, Linda Treumer and Stephanie Roye performed a prop dance to "Fire on the Bayou." In Individual Talent ages 6 to 9, Valerie Roye placed 2nd to a prop dance to "It's a Hard Knock Life." In ages 10 to 12, Stephanie Roye placed 2nd to a jazz dance called "Conga." In ages 15 to 17, Jean Dorotik placed 3rd to a jazz dance named "Danger Zone."

First place winners in Craft were Jean Dorotik, Stephanie Roye, Lenice Kaspar and Jeanine Dorotik.

We also won first place on our Scrapbook.

Adults attending were Youth Leaders Georgia Dorotik, Assistant Leader Karen Kaspar, also Dorothy Srubar, Wanda Dorotik, Mary Ann Dluhos, Marjorie Treumer, Jenna Mae '1reumer, Bobby and Anita Roye.

The August meeting was called to order by President Susan Spacek. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Matthew Ford. Minutes from our July meeting were read by Secretary Trudy Krenek. Twenty - one youth members and six adults attended the meeting.

During our meeting, we discussed and decided on having a dart throw at the Dime Box Volunteer Firemen's picnic. We also discussed what time we should leave for the New Tabor swim party.

The Dime Box lodge would like to greatly thank the New Tabor lodge for their great hospitality.

Our last meeting was held on August 5, 1986. We planned to play games after our meeting.

Marie Stayton, our youth leader, told us we now have a stand for our banner and a Canon Sure Shot camera which we earned from our bake sale money.

Door prizes were won by John Green and Gwyn Hall. We made 574.90 at our last bake sale.

District V YAD was held on August 3rd at Lodge 88. I won first place on my train needlepoint. Everyone had a great time.

Brother John P. Mucha, 78, was born 10 August 1907 in Caldwell, Texas.

Services were held on Tuesday, May 6th at 2 p.m. at Colonial Chapel Cook Walden Funeral Home with Reverend Paul Stephens officiating. Interment was at Austin Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife, Fannie Mucha; one daughter, three granddaughters, one great granddaughter; four sisters, Jewell Kerns of Sacramento, California, Tracy Hejl of Caldwell, Annie Hejl of College Station and Georgie Kortis of Cameron; and several nieces and nephews.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 17, New Tabor, in behalf of our entire membership, wish to extend our sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother JOHN CABNIS [LC.) GREEN, who was found dead at his residence on Wednesday, April 30, 1986. He died of natural causes.

Brother Green was born February 19, 1922 in the Providence Community in Burleson County to the late Nathan and Emma Leach Green. He grew up in Burleson County and graduated from Caldwell High School. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on September 18, 1942 at San Antonio. He served with the Marines in Foreign Service and at sea in the Asiatic Pacific, New Guinea, Solomon Islands and China. He was honorably discharged on February 11, 1946.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the SPJST Lodge No. 17, New Tabor. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 4458 in Caldwell and was very active in post activities. He lived in California for several years following his army duties. He was a mechanic in a steel factory. He moved back to Burleson County in 1966. He was a foreman at Kellar Ladders in Caldwell before his retirement. He was also a rancher. He was a member of the Providence Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by wife, Bea Summers Green, in 1984 and Inez Bowers Green on February 5, 1981. A son, John Gary Green preceded him in death on November 22, 1977. He also was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Leona Payne.

Survivors include one son, Richard Lee Green of New Ulm; one daughter, Shirley Gordon of Houston; three grandchildren; four sisters, Aileen Blazek of Caldwell, Rosalie Thomas of Brownwood, Ella Upham and Annie Montalbano, both of Houston; and two brothers, Walter Green of Brenham and Alvin Green of McKinney.

Funeral services for J.C. Green were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 1st in the Phillips - Luckey Chapel with the Rev. Jack Mitchell and Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Interment was in the Providence Cemetery.

Serving as active pallbearers were members of the VFW Post 4458, Herman Constable, Frank Frieda, Herman Gascamp, Charlie Cowan, Henry Gaas and Ted May. Honorary pallbearers were VFW and SPJST members Earl Wiederhold, Ray Zgabay, Alfons Pivonka, Larry Lindley, Daniel Hejl, A.E. Smith and Antone Haisler.

Brother Rountree was born September 6, 1960 in San Angelo. He graduated from San Angelo Lake View High School and was married to Melissa Moore on February 20, 1982.

He was a service aide attendant at San Angelo State School.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 23rd in Hillcrest Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Oglesby officiating. Burial was in Fairmont Cemetery directed by Johnson Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife, Melissa; his parents, Bobby and Maudie Rountree of San Angelo; maternal grandmother, Edna Parker of Ballinger; paternal grandparents, Carl and Lucille Rountree of DeLeon; several aunts and uncles and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Sheila Rountree.

Pallbearers were Noel Zapata, James McClellan, Larry Magill, Brian Martin, Mark Bell, Stan Hemphill, John Hyatt and Jeff Heinatz.

Honorary pallbearers were the 1979 graduating class of Lake View High School.

She was a member of the Vsetin Czech - Moravian Brethren Church and the Christian Sisters Society and a member of the SPJST. She was preceded in death by her husband, R.B. Brown in 1958; also three brothers and a sister preceded her in death.

The body lay in state at the Kubena Funeral Home until 1:15 p.m.

August 15th, when it was taken to the Czech - Moravian Brethren Church at Vsetin for 2:30 p.m. funeral services.

Burial was in the City Cemetery in Hallettsville.

Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Julia Roeber of Hallettsville, Mrs. A.W. Glover and Mrs. Ben Hathaway, both of Victoria.

Z to rodiny Petrovy dosud iiji pani Boiena Bro2kova, ktera v Toni byla poctend od SPJST to se do2ila 96 let a byla dlouho elenkou toho krajanskeho spolku, a jeji sestra pani Marie Nesudova ktera byla asi 9 mesicu stars kdy2 prijela do Ennis v 1892. Zname tuto rodina a jejich eleny a v2dy jsme byli dobrmi prateli po celf ten eas. Jedna dcera pani Jareshova zesnula pied lety a syn Frank Petr, kterj, byl 14 leo'ikdy2 prijel do Ameriky, ji g take je na veenosti.

Deti a vnouaata z Petrovy rodiny dosud 2iji zde a v Ennis. To sejiti se konalo pry na sokolovne a bylo pfitomno 65 lidi a asi 17 ad. Mai se dobfe, dobry ()bed a v ge se pekne vydarilo. Pokraeovini z minuleho Vestniku John' J. Karas z Houstonu Z doby panovani Pern gtejnii na Pferovsku, ktere tak vYrazne zasdhlo do dejin pferovskeho hradu a mesta Pferova, pochdzi vznik noveho mestskeho znaku. Po ziskani mesta Vilemem z Pern g tejna byla k dosavadnimu symbolu dvou ve2i, kterY pry pochazi z doby pied znieenim Pferova Tatary v roce 1241, pfidana zubfi hlava, rodovY erb Perngtejnit.

Zubfi (jednotne eislo zubr), zvifata podobna americkYm bisonum (Buffaloes), se nachdzela ye stare vlasti pry al do 13. stoleti. Do teto doby to zejmena pry bylo na eeskomorayskem pomezi, kde osidlovdni taktka liduprazdnYch pralesfi bylo mnohem pomalej gi net' v jinYch edstech stare vlasti. Centrem teto tak zvane "Zubfi zeme" na Ceskomora yske Vysoeine bylo tizemi mezi 2d'arem nad Sazavou a Poliekou (obe mesta v Cechach) a mezi NovYm Mestem a Bystfici nad Perngtejnem (obe mesta na Morave). V srdci tohoto tizemi lei mesteeko Jimramov, kde kdysi bylo hradigte Jimrama z Kamene (Zubergtejna), pfedchfidce pern gtejnskeho rodu.

Prvni zachovald pisemnd zminka o pozdej gim hradu Pern gtejnu je z roku 1285, kdy tu byl panem Stepan III z Pern g tejna. NecelYch 100 let pozdeji v roce 1378 ( rok umrti "otce vlasti" cisate Karla IV) byl pdnem tu Vilem I z Perng tejna, zakladatel velke slavy a moci tohoto rodu. Tento Vilem byl v. roce 1397 starostou zeme Morayske, pozdeji nejvygg im komofim a v roce 1421 byl zemskym hejtmanem moray skYm. Z vnukfi tohoto Vilema byl to jeho jmenovec Vilem II, kterY koupil hrad Pferov a mesteeko v jeho podhradi, jak ji2 v tomto eldnku zmineno, v dubnu 1475. Jmeno perngtejnskeho rodu, jak je snad kaidemu z etendffi tohoto elanku jig zjevne, pochazi od hradu Perngtejna.

Toto jmeno je psano nestejne v ruznYch starch zaznamech (Bernsteyn, Berstoyn, Perenstayn, Pernstan a podobne); spravne v gak bylo to Barenstein, to je Medvecli skdla Medvedi hrad. MestYs pod hradem jmenem Nedvedice by sprdvne•mel nesti nazev Nedvedice stejne jako tu tekouci fieka Nedvedieka by se vlastne mela jmenovat Medvedieka; oba tyto

nazvy i jmeno hradu jsou si toto2ne a pfipominaji, le kdysi tu bylo hodne medvedfi. Hrad Pern gtejn, pftvodne v ranne gotickem stylu, na nevysokem skalnatem ostrohu pfi toku fieky Nedvedieky, nebyl nikdy od nepfitele dobyt. Pro svuj sveraznY sloh a vnej gi i vniffni zachovalost bYya tento hrad dodnes east° nazYvan krdlem morayskYch hradfl. Pany z Perngtejna, kterYm tento hrad patfil vie jak 311 let (do roku 1596) tu na vane easy ptipomind rodovY znak eerne zubfi hlavy se zlatYm kruhem ve stfibrnem gtite. Zubfi hlava v pferovskem mestskem znaku ma ye svYch nozdrach hottlev, na rozdil od zlateho kruhu v nozdrach zubfi hlavy ye stfibrnem gtite znaku pant). z Pern gtejna. Jak k perngtejnskemu tak k pferovskemu znaku se vale nekolik povesti. Dle nejvice roz g ifene zkazky byl zakladatelem pern gtejnskeho rodu uhlif (vYrobce dfeveneho uhli) Venava, proslavenY svou nebojacnosti a silou.

Tento uhlif pfivedl na knfleci dviir za houiev prostreenou nozdrami obroviteho zubra, ktereho pfemohl holYma rukama. If you want a vacation cottage or condominium but find it's financially out of reach, maybe you should consider time sharing, or the purchase of a unit in a resort condominium for a specific week every year, has spread rapidly since it was first introduced into this country in the early 1970s.

There are now more than 1,000 time sharing resorts in the U.S. Most are in Florida, Colorado, California, Hawaii, South Carolina and Texas, according to the National Time Sharing Council. Tainted initially by some disreputable practices, time sharing has regained some respectability as such big - name corporations as Marriott and Sheraton have gone into the business.

Prices for fully outfitted time sharing units -- including furniture, dishes, silverware, even sheets -- range between $2,000 and $20,000 for an annual week, and average $7,000. The price varies according to the resort's location, its amenities and whether the week you buy is in the peak, shoulder or off reason. The developer usually provides financing, with a down payment of 10 to 20 percent and the balance paid over a 5 to 10 - year period. In addition to the purchase price, there is an annual maintenance fee of about $200.

Many resorts let owners exchange their units for comparably priced ones in other time - share resorts in the U.S., Europe, the Caribbean or elsewhere during any given year.
