Remember the District V YAD on Sunday, August 3rd which will be hosted by Lodge 88 at 1435 Beall Street in Houston. *** Observations on Dallas Sesquicentennial Celebration Day --For the past 50 years we have been hearing about the Czech Texans' Centennial Exhibit at the State Fair and the accompanying weekend of activities in Dallas. Almost all the 1936 Centennial activities of the Czechs were concentrated in Dallas.

This year there have been and will continue to be many sesquicentennial activities throughout the state, but the Dallas Sesquicentennial Czech Days (SCD) still may be the "big show" of the 1986 Sesquicentennial.

For over a year, President Stanley Patak and the delegates from the 20 or - so member societies of the American - Czech Culture Society of Dallas have been planning and working to design and develop a very ambitious program of events and activities for the Sesquicentennial Czech Days in Dallas, October 3rd through 5th.

Many, many people, particularly Czechs, from all over Texas, most states of the USA, and all over the world will be in Dallas for that Czech weekend. As an accommodation for those many visitors, most of the activities planned for the weekend will be designed just about to breakeven financially.

The one item which will not breakeven financially will be the 30 day Czech Exhibit at the State Fair.

Most if not all of the member societies of the American - Czech Culture Society each have pledged $250 for the $10,000 plus cost of the exhibit, but they need the help of all Czechs throughout the State of Texas, if the exhibit is to be outfitted properly to tell the proud story of the Czech Texans to people from all over the world.

Anyone can help fund the exhibit by one or more of the below suggestions: 1) Buying an ad in the Souvenir Program booklet at $25 per quarter page, $50 per half page or $100 per full page. However, the deadline for purchase of these ads is July 31st [postmark]. Sketch the layout of the ad, make checks payable to the American - Czech Festival, and mail today to 6307 Saratoga Circle, Dallas, Texas 75214. Be sure to give the name of the organization which is to receive credit for the ad sale.

2) Purchase the Souvenir Program booklet when it becomes available on about October 1st. However, if you purchase a $25 or larger ad, you will get a copy of the Souvenir Program booklet free. The regular price of the booklet probably will be in excess of $5.

3)Make an outright cash donation to support the exhibit, if you prefer to help in this way.

The Souvenir Program booklet will be about 100 pages, with enamel cover, pictures, proclamations, program of events and activities, and much information about the Czechs of Texas (history, organizations, and the exhibit at the State Fair).

An Czech - founded, state - level [not local level] organizations are encouraged to send information about themselves which the committee can consider for inclusion in the Souvenir Program booklet. Mail to American Czech Cultural Society, P.O. Box 271221, Dallas, Texas 75227.

The ad section of the booklet will be a virtual statewide directory of Czech businesses, organizations, individuals, and friends who are supporting and extending their well - wishes to the Sesquicentennial Czech Days in Dallas.

For the next 50 years, people all over the world will be recalling and talking about the Czech Texans' Sesquicentennial Exhibit at the State Fair and the accompanying weekend of activities in Dallas.

Let's all help Dallas make it a big one - one that will be hard to match or beat in the 2036 Texas Bi - Centennial.

Help fund the exhibit and make your plans now to be in Dallas on October 3rd through 5th.

It seems that SPJST members and lodges are really getting behind this worthy cause.

District V - Family Day September 21, 1986 The Executive Committee of District V met Sunday, July 19th at Lodge 172 in Pasadena to discuss the fall meeting of District V to be held September 21, 1986 at Lodge 172.

This meeting will be a "Family Day" get - together and should prove to be fun and entertainment for all ages. Theme is "Old - Fashioned Picnic." We expect to have the Lodge 88 Choral Group and Orchestra, and games are being planned so that everyone will be able to participate in the activities.

The meal will be served from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. and will be covered dishes furnished by those who attend and the meat furnished by District V. Be sure to bring enough vegetables and salad for your family. Cakes and pies donated will be auctioned whole.

We hope to make this an enjoyable FAMILY DAY for everyone. We look forward to seeing you there.

4 Plans Annual Family Day Activities Lodge

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, July 13, 1986 at the Grant Building in Hallettsville. Due to the passing away of our President Linda Mikush in May after a brief illness, Vice President Annie Vahalik took over as president.

She extended sympathy to Mrs. Mikush's family. She will be missed by

the members because she was a loyal and dedicated lodge member, having served as president, vice president, youth leader, assistant youth leader and on various committees.

Pledge to the flag was led by Janelle Chudej. Resolutions of sympathy were read by Gaye Galetka for our departed members, Linda Mikush and Stazie Jahn.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the previous meeting which were approved.

Correspondence followed. Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave her report.

Erwin Holy announced a sales seminar will be held in Hallettsville in July.

It was decided not to elect another vice president since election of officers will be held in November.

Plans were discussed and made, with committees named for our annual Family Day to be held on Sunday, August 17th at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville beginning with a noon meal of fried chicken and the trimmings with a fee of $2.50 for adults and children under 12 for $1.50.

Ladies of the lodge are asked to donate desserts of cakes, pies, kolache, etc. to be served with the meal. The youth club will have a money - making project as usual. A Surprise Walk will be held following a short meeting.

Anyone interested in bringing prizes for it should have them wrapped and worth about $1. Also, if possible, a Straight Domino Tournament for members will be held with $1 fee per player. Erwin Holy will check with District VI Director Matt Vanek if he can attend. Refreshments will be served as usual.

Due to the Vsetin social on the second Sunday in September, our lodge will not meet that month.

Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka gave his report. The meeting then adjourned.

July, August and September birthdays were honored. They were Erwin Holy, Annie Vahalik, Patsy Zabransky, Hilmer Galetka and Gaye Galetka. Brother Hilmer Galetka won the birthday cake. A special Father's Day door prize went to Erwin Holy and the door prize was won by Vernon Zak. Refreshments and lunch were enjoyed.

Make plans now to attend our annual Family Day on Sunday, August 17th at the American Legion Hall beginning with a fried chicken dinner as usual. A short meeting will be held followed by entertainment and refreshments. Members and their families are invited to attend.

13, Dime Box Meeting Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: Sorry I missed the meeting Sunday!

There are times when something comes up and we have to miss a meeting.

Each of us should try to attend as many meetings as possible. There are decisions that have to be made and it is best to have as many members present, as possible, to help make those decisions. In every organization there seems to be just a few people who attend meetings and make decisions; then there are those who never come to meetings and find fault.

Everything seems to be rockir along rather smoothly here at lodge. We are fortunate to have a dedicated workcrew who does a fantastic job at all occasions. The cleaning ladies do an excellent job and we have to give our Entertainment

Committee a big thanks. They are the ones who make things happen. Thanks to everyone for a job well done.

For those of you who may not know when our meetings are held, they are held every third Sunday of each month starting at 2 p.m. The youth meeting is held immediately following at 3 p.m.

Sister Doris Ford is the youth leader at this time. She is, doing a very good job.

There are times when I really miss the youth club. I was youth leader for several years. We went to Astro World the other day and it reminded me of he days when we would go with the youth club to different places. We had about 50 active kids at that time and it was something to try and keep up with that many kids. We went to Six Flags several times and to lots of other fun places. Lots of fun! Hang in there, Doris, you are doing a great job.

Lodge 17, New Tabor To Hold 2-Day Tournament Dear Members: Our regular meeting was held on July 13th with all officers present.

Resolutions of Sympathy were read for J.C. Green and John Mucha. To the families and friends of these departed brothers: You have our deepest sympathies.

Donnie Suehs repaired and refinished the piano stool at no charge.

It looks very nice and sturdy. Thank you very much, Donnie, from all of us.

The Kolache Festival was discussed and Susan Skrabanek reported that the youth club would have a booth. She also gave her report on camp. It seems that everyone had a great time.

Plans are being made for the Fall Festival. Some of the things the youth club will be hosting will be bingo, cake auction, face painting, and cow patty bingo.

The committee to finalize plans for the adult lodge activities are Chairman Bud Petty and other members Martha Trcalek, Theodore Dusek, Sr., Gladys Hejl, Susan Skrabanek and Lola Vavra. Ben Trcalek, Jr. was appointed treasurer for the day.

Plans are made for the local domino tournament to be held August 15th for "straight dominoes" at 6 p.m. and August 16th at 2 p.m. for "42." This is a members only tournament. Good luck to all entries!

28, East Bernard Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: It seems as though this year is going by very fast, here it is time for the August meeting of Lodge Karel Jonas.

The meeting, on Sunday, August 3rd, will be without Brother Albert Lupik, our lodge recording secretary, for he will be already away on an automobile trip to eastern Canada. The 2 p.m. "start," in the lodge hall will follow a standard "Order of Business" and agenda. There will be reports on the progress of "Direct Billing" and other subjects.

The E.O. of L.M. will convene at the buffet table after the business meeting.

News of "Direct Billing" was brought to the July 6th meeting. The

lodge should be on "Direct Billing" by the end of July. Other reports were accepted as given by the dozen or so members present. The meeting was under an hour long with no motions being voted on.

Sister Alene Kortis won the door prize.

The meeting of the E.O. of L.M. was made a big success by the donation of food by Sisters Haverda, Kortis, Janik, Luquette and Nezval. There was more than enough food to go around.

Unknown to us, Brother Frank Brdecka was in a Houston hospital for about a week and was due to come home the evening of July 6th, the meeting day. A quick recovery is wished to him. Brother Willie Kelner, a sib brother to lodge financial secretary, Brother Anton Kelner, Jr., is also on the sick list and we hope he is feeling better.

About "Direct Billing:" To those members who have questions about it, you can get the answers in the meeting.

What will happen is that those members still paying on their policies will NO LONGER pay their dues to the local lodge financial secretary but WILL PAY DIRECT TO THE SUPREME LODGE FINANCIAL SECRETARY, Brother Jerry Mikulas, Jr. To the faithful, see you August 3rd and this writer remains - - Joseph D. 40 Family Day Covered Dish Dinner

The SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo Hillje Family Day covered dish dinner began with an afternoon of fellowship between friends and members. Special guests were Henrietta and Matt Vanek of Victoria and 50 - year members.

Sister Janet Marek introduced a delightful fall fashion show straight from Paris. Youth members and leaders all participated and provided a humerous fashion review. A quick dance lesson followed, with youth members and volunteers from the audience.

Michael Marek was presented a special plaque for his contribution to the preservation of the Czech heritage and all his many years of participation in youth activities. Michael is a very talented person and was a great representative at the Fraternal Fest.

Brother Matt Vanek had a short VHS cassette presentation about our Czech history and heritage. He said the cassette does belong to District VI and is available to check out.

Fifty - year members were honored with pins and tie tacks. President Rita Vanek and Brother Matt Vanek presented awards to Lorraine Cry, Joe J. Kopecky, Jr., Charlie Steno and Matilda Stropek. Not present, but also to receive awards are Clarence Kopecky, Frank Kresta and Edward F. Rod. Departed member Josephine Malota was recognized with a minute of silent prayer.

Announcements were made about the upcoming YAD on July 20th and the newly - organized Wharton County Czech Heritage Society.

Lodge 80, Holland Meeting Dear Members and Friends: The mercury was hovering around the 95 - degree mark for several days, but Friday, Saturday and Sunday it went up to 100 - 101 and Sunday 102 degrees and it looks like we will have more of the same for the next several days according to the weather forecasters. As long as it's in the 80s it's not so bad, but when it goes into those 90s, it's too hot!

I was thinking how we people stood up to this type of weather in what they called the "good old days." I remember picking cotton in that hot sun dragging that sack to put the cotton in with a straw hat on my head; if it got to burning through that hat, we would pull a few cotton leaves and put them in the hat and that would help some.

The girls or ladies would have big bonnets made of heavy cotton material. The top part of the bonnet was made double of this material and they would sew it from the front to the back of this bonnet, a space about 11/2 inches wide was left between the sewings. The next thing for this bonnet was to make some slats (real thin) made out of cedarwood and they would be inserted in the top of the bonnets and this would keep their head cool. They say those were the good old days.

Our July meeting was held Sunday, June 29th instead of the first Sunday, July 6th. President Bohac called the meeting to order at 2 p.m.

Roll call of officers revealed that all were present except Secretary Latham who was absent.

Glenda Liles, our financial secretary, read the minutes of the June meeting. They were accepted as read.

In correspondence was a letter from the Bartlett Chamber of Commerce asking our lodge to participate in their parade in October.

Two new members were accepted to our lodge at this meeting; they are Lynn and Pat Stroud.

The charter bus to the Czech Day at the State Fair was discussed. More on this at our next meeting.

As there was no further business to be discussed, the meeting adjourned to meet.again on the first Sunday, August 3rd.

Ondrusek reported our Teen Queen is Stephanie Becan and our King is Eugene Reznik -congratulations, youth are at camp today; decorating -- no report; house committee -- Adolph Salac thanked all for their help in cleaning yard, bulb replacements, outside electrical -matters, also the building that was traded is due to be torn down for parking area.

The Sunshine Committee sent the following cards: Get well to Brother Lewis Mandak, Frank Mach, Ben Jarma and Sister I3uelah Horak, Sister Linda Collard and Julie Adamcik.

District V YAD will be hosted by Lodge 88 on Sunday, August 3rd.

DYC Dorothy Pflughaupt has announced that a spaghetti dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. with the program starting at 1 p.m. Dinner tickets are $3.50 for the regular plate and $2 for the mini plate.

Did you see the little article in the Sunday Chronicle Parade Magazine?

It was in the Almanac section and it concerned what the letters SPJST mean. It was a nice article and put our organization in bold letters for all to read about.

Sister Clara Broz is charge of the domino tournament this year. She has all the rules and needed information if you want to call her. The date for the straight dominoes is Saturday, August 16th and on Saturday, August 23rd the forty - two contest will be held. Both start at 10 a.m. Refreshments will be served. A $5 fee will be charged to defray the expenses. I know we have some very good domino players here at Lodge 88 so you need to enter this contest and go on to win at the state level.

Sounds like the youth camp was a fun time for all. We had 81 campers go

to camp from four lodges in District V. Our Lodge 88 Youth Club will hold their monthly cake sale on Thursday, August 14th. All pastry donations to the youth club will, be appreciated.

Louis Roznovsky spent some time in the hospital last week. He was released with different medication and is improving at home under the wa chful eye of wife, Elsie.

Sister Adelia Kite has been feeiing under the weather for the past seven.] weeks. She is at home, but trying to take it easy.

Bessie and Jerry Kolacny returned home safe but tired after a 3 - week tour of the northwest corner of the USA and up into Canada. They went through Colorado and camped several days in. Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and on into Montana and British Columbia, Canada. They returned by a different route, taking in the sights in Idaho and Salt Lake City, Utah. The weather was cool, going down to freezing in some of the high places.

Leon Hale, husband of Birthday Sister Virginia Hale, passed away in a local hospital on Saturday, July 19th.

He had been hospitalized for his diabetic condition and suffered heart failure. Our sympathy goes to Virginia in this time of sorrow.

Brother John Dybala, an active member of the Czech Concert Orchestra, passed away several weeks ago. He had been the treasurer of the orchestra and played the drums. Our condolences go to his survivors.

On Friday, August 1st, the Phil Grey Orchestra will play in the Chandelier Ballroom. This is a local band playing the music of the big bands. Tickets are $15 per person.

The Knights of Dixie will appear Saturday, August 2nd. They play a variety of good danceable music. en Saturday, August 9th, the Ellinger Combo comes to town. They play really good polkas and waltzes.

Doris and Henry Knapick are great grandparents for the first time. Doris' grandson, Troy and wife Debbie Fogarty, are the proud parents of Brandon Russell born on July 1st. This happy occasion also makes Betty Fogarty a grandmother and Elsie Talcot becomes a great - great grandmother. Little Brandon starts the fifth generation in this family. Our congratulations to all of them.

88 Meeting

JULY 14, 1986 The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 88 was held on Monday, July 14, 1986 with 101 members in attendance.

The various committee reports were given. We accepted 100 new applicants for insurance, 5 annuity members, 4 Universal Life, two transferees in, and one transferee out.

District V Director Jerry Prochazka reported to the membership the actions of the Supreme Lodge in their quarterly meeting.

Sister Clara Broz announced the dates of the local lodge straight domino and forty - two tournaments would be: Straight domino on August 16th and forty - two on August 23rd and that there would be a $5 entry fee; anyone interested should get in contact with her.

Benevolence Chairman Mary Kosut reported on the number of hours lodge members had given in doing charity work and working around the lodge doing work without compensation.

Members reported on the sick list were Willie Hoffman, Ida Hanka and Louis Roznovsky. Youth Leader Marie Stayton was reported at home and doing fine after her recent surgery and Ellen Miculka had spent a few days in the hospital having tests made.

Door prize winners for the July meeting were Bill Malak, Joe Knapick, Marceil Malak and Louis Chudej. Ann Gerlich won the Liberty Savings & Loan door prize.

After adjournment, sandwiches and cold drinks (beer and soda) were served to the members.

Our next monthly meeting will be on Monday, August 11th at 7:30 p.m.

Lodge Pokrok No • 88,Houston To Present Czech Players The Hlahol Drama Club of Lodge Pokrok No. 88, Houston, Texas, plans to present a 3 - act comedy in the Czech language on Sunday, September 14, 1986 entitled "Kos To Zaridi (Kos will arrange it).

As far as'we know we are the only SPJST lodge to present a play in the Czech language. It is our desire to present a good and entertaining play for your enjoyment. It is also our way of helping preserve the use of the Czech language in Texas. We had hoped to present the play earlier this year, but prior personal commitments and vacation plans would not permit it.

Our cast was brought together by our able director Marie Kostomlatsky, with help from the very resourceful Ted LaPesh. Our casts consists of six veteran actors - Marie Kostomlatsky, Vera Cotrino, Helen Kubicek, Jan Schroif, Gene Barcak and Ted LaPesh; and three new - corners to the Czech stage - Joyce 13ohuslav, Jerry Persan and Bill Malina.

We have a lot of fun at our practice sessions. At times some of the lines are not said the way they should be and the whole cast breaks out in laughter, at other times we skip a' few lines or ad lib and confuse everyone on stage including our very fine prompter Svatka Link. There are also times when the mind sits down when we get on stage and nothing seems to go right so we simply start over and try again.

By curtain time on September 14th we will have the "bugs" worked out and we will present what we hope will be a very enjoyable play.

Our thanks go out to our volunteer stage manager, Tim Kostorn, who always se,-: to it that the stage is in good shape for our practices.

Lodge La Parita No. 161 Meeting Dear Members: Our lodge meeting held on June 1, 1986 at 11:30 a.m. at K - Bob's Restaurant was very well - attended, with 15 members and 6 guests.

Lloyd House called the meeting to order asking all members to stand in a moment of prayer for Sister Frances Mutine who passed away. While standing, the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag followed.

Sister Tillie Valchar read the minutes of our last meeting as secretary, followed with the treasurer's report which was approved as read.

A thank you card was read by President Lloyd House on the donation to the Scholarship Fund for Silas Smith, followed by other correspondence.

New Business -- A motion to raise the door prizes to $3 of $2 was made.

Motion passed and carried.

President House after some discussion asked that Josie's Place be checked out for the next meeting place in September.

Decision was finalized after the findings were not appropriate for a change. So we return to K - Bob's Restaurant on Sunday, September 14th at 11:30 a.m.

Recognition of our selfless sacrifice to protect and preserve the world's symbol of freedom, personal contribution given in the year 1985 has been officially recorded and our lodge's name entered on a permanent Register of Contributors to be displayed at the Museum of the rebuilt Statue of Liberty, Port of New York United States of America, for our this members to cherish of contribution, a framed acknowlegement from the office in New York.

Joe Juricek was asked to give the table prayer with all members to stand.

Rozkvet No. 172, Pasadena News Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: The June meeting was well attended and all went smoothly. We missed our president, Brother Dressler, who was on vacation. The meeting was conducted by Vice President Brother Dan Berry.

After the pledge to the flag and a moment of silence, we had roll call of officers, followed by reading of the minutes of our last month's meeting and reading of correspondence.

All reports were given and all were good. We seem to be doing better as time goes on.

Brother Tommy Wallace did some painting on the bathroom walls and other work. Also,work is being done on building a storage building or rather a storage place next to our outside barbecue place.

I also overheard some talk that we need to make more improvements on our hall. We will let you all know,when plans are more definite, just what we are doing.

The District V fall meeting will be held at Lodge 172. Watch for details in the Vestnik and do try to come out to Pasadena and enjoy the day with us.

The date has not been announced yet.

Several members will receive 50 year membership pins at the District V meeting. They are Christopher Coroneos, Edward Fojtik, Vlasta Machann, Adolph Stepan, Sadie Stepan, Joe Zucha and Daniel Zucha.

This is such a busy time with reunions, anniversaries and weddings.

Brother Wink and Sister Marie Appelt of Lodge 172 celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 13th. It was a beautiful occasion and we wish them many more. On July 26th another couple celebrated a wedding anniversary but theirs was their first. A year ago Denise and Lewie Bosley were married and they live in Gove, Kansas. Denise is the daughter of Leona and Julius Zella of Houston and Lodge 172.

I hope all of you are having a nice summer. Don't forget our lodge meetings on every 4th Wednesday of the month.

Dear Members: Warrenton Lodge 179 met for its regular meeting on July 10, 1986 at 8 p.m. President Harold Bergmann presided.

Financial secretary, secretary and treasurer gave their reports.

In old business, discussion of a feast for second Sunday, August 10th was re - opened. Since this would be our 10th year of being chartered, a motion was made and seconded that we should continue to have our feast. It will consist of the following: A fried chicken dinner with trimmings; a variety shoot beginning at 1:30 p.m.; a cake walk and/or cake auction also at 1:30 p.m. Brother Lee Leonhardt agreed to donate all the potatoes we will need. Chicken to go will be ready at 10:30 a.m. selling for $6 for 10 pieces. Adult plates will sell for $4.25; child plates 6 years over, $2.25; under 6 years old -- free.

Under other business, our trip to Houston Astrodome was brought to attention. The bus was to leave at 11 a.m. from Warrenton grocery, would return around 8 p.m. that evening.

No other business was brought forward. The meeting was adjourned.

The Food Committee at meeting date did not advise what would be for next month's meal.

LODGE 179 TAKES TRIP On July 13th at 11 a.m., Lodge 179 chartered a Trailways bus and went to Astros' baseball game. There were 44 seats taken and 4 tickets that were to meet us in Houston. A large majority of them were members and their family with a few guests. Everyone had a good time, however, Astros lost by one run in extra innings. The bus arrived at 8 p.m.

Our lodge held its regular monthly meeting Sunday, July 13th at 2 p.m.

Vice President Gus Florian called the meeting to order because of the absence of our President Dennis Hermis who was vacationing with his family in Colorado.

We had 49 members present who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. All remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of our departed member, Gretchen Tanner. Gretchen was the daughter of Virgil and Wila Tanner. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the Tanner family.

Secretary Alice Jochen held roll call of officers and then read the minutes from our previous meeting which stood approved as read.

Rosie Turnis read the financial secretary's report. Sidon Tumis gave the treasurer's report.

The Board of Trustees and bar reports were read by Rosie Schilhab.

The youth club report was given by Keith Kieschnick.

Our Sick Committee reported that William Janik was in the hospital and they reported he is home by now. We all wish William a speedy recovery.

We had no Grievance Committee report and no Auditing Committee report at this meeting.

New applicants were Lisa Renee Machacek, Leslie Machacek, William M. Machacek; they all were signed up

by Sales Representative Sidon Tutnis.

We were happy to have Joe Garnbil and Mrs. Fred Buri as visitors in this meeting.

Capsule prize for $40 went unclaimed by Joyce Gruetzner; the next month's prize will be $50. The youngest member $5 prize went to Priscella Perez. The door prizes went to Robert Kieschnick, Henry Linhart, Millie Linhart and Nelson A. Roemer.

Brother Henry Linhart took the podium and read an article on SPJST and what it means. This article was published in Sunday's Houston Chronicle on page 4 of the Texas Magazine.

The meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m.

187 Promotes Polka Pfest/Battle Dance

Lodge

Members of Lodge 187 in Round Rock will be busy during the remainder of July and August with special dance activities.

A Polka Pfest will be held from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. on July 27th. Three polka bands will perform including Eddie Ray & The Polka Dots, Fritze Hodde, and the Vrazels. A German plate lunch including sausage, beans, potatoes and sauerkraut will be available during the dance.

A battle dance between Leather & Lace and the Debonaires is scheduled to last from 6 p.m. until 11 a.m. on August 17th.

Other special dance activities during the month of August include a special appearance by Jana Jay (Hee Haw TV Star) on Thursday, August 8th and Johnny Dee & The Rocket 88s on Saturday, August 30th.

Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy some summer fun at Lodge 187.

The next Board meeting is scheduled for August 20th and the next general meeting is scheduled for August 24th.

Interesting Facts About Alief

Although most people living in Houston and its surrounding area more or less know where the community of Alief is located, there are many others, especially in the other parts of Texas, who are not aware of its existence. This short article is written to acquaint the latter group at least partially with this progressive community. Alief, one of the fast growing areas in southeast Houston, has its own school district which starts in the east at S. Gessner and runs in the westerly direction to Barker reservoir.

In the north it begins at Westheimer and its southernmost point is south of W. Bellfort. The community of Alief was named in honor of Mrs. Alief Ozelda Magee, the first postmistress.

She was born Alief Ozelda Morris on November 18, 1851, in Italy, Texas.

She married Dr. J.S. Magee and had two children who died in infancy. She and her husband came to Dairy, Texas around 1896 and filed an application in 1897 for a post office. (The original village called Dairy was founded in 1894 by Jacamiah S. Daugherty, said to be a school teacher from Missouri, who introduced the production of rice to the community.) Because the postal officials advised the applicants "Dairy" was too similar to an existing post office "Daisy," the name of the post office was changed to Alief in honor of its postmistress Alief Magee.

Mrs. Magee died on July 6, 1899 and was buried at the homesite just east of Bray's Bayou and south of Alief Houston Road. When this road and its extension -- Alief Clodine Road -- was widened, she was reburied in Alief Cemetery on Bellaire and Alief Cemetery Road. This cemetery will soon be dedicated as a state historical site. Alief area began developing around 1894 as a farming community dealing with cotton, cattle, dairy farming and especially rice which got a big boost from the American Canal Company by pumping water from the Brazos River into the rice fields through a network of canals. (By the way, the well - known Andrau Airpark was originally an airport and rice farm owned by Dr. Andrau. The former canals for rice irrigation are still visible from air.)

After WWII the community started to turn to industrial development closely followed by the commerce and residential build - up. There is no accurate count of the number of residents in Alief (Dairy) in its early settlement years but in 1940 the populace was at 150, including a couple of Czech families. In 1984 that figure jumped to 135,000 - 140,000 people. As far as the education is concerned, the communities of Alief, Addicks and Barker were one school district until the year 1906. In 1917, the Dairy School became an independent school district and changed its name from Dairy to Alief. From 1911 to 1926, Alief (Dairy) operated a 10 grade system. The eleventh grade was added in 1926. A three - story brick building was erected in 1911 on the 4 acre site where the annex, gym and the tax office are now located. It served the Alief district until it was condemned in 1939. As of August

Wednesday, July 30, 1986—VESTNiK/7 1984, the Alief Independent School District (AISD) has 14 elementary schools, 5 middle schools and 2 high schools which house over 22,500 students.

In the above totals are 2 schools which carry Czech names. It is James Holub Middle School and Elsik High School. The former school is named after James Holub, who was a member of AISD School Board from 1962 until 1968. The oldest of 4 children, J. Holub was born November 12, 1924 in Chicago. His family moved to Michigan when he was 6 and he grew up on the farm. To get an education, he followed the railroad tracks to a country school where there were only 3 other students in his grade. He graduated from high school in a neighboring town. James Holub served in WWII, married in 1948 and spent the next 6 years farming. Moved to Houston area in 1955 and settled in Alief in 1960. Five of Holub's children were educated in Alief Schools. Mr. Holub utilized his skills as the superintendent of the River Oaks Country Club to the benefit of Alief students. He established and maintained the first football field, partially financing the project himself.

He also spent countless hours upkeeping and supervising care of all district grounds and outdoor facilities.

He was active in Alief PTA, charter member of Alief Middle School PTO and was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. James Holub Middle School at 9515 S. Dairy Ashford was opened on August 24, 1981 with 1,000 sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. The 2 - story building has 154,000 square feet and a capacity of 1,400 students.

Outdoor facilities include physical education athletic practice and playing fields, 2 tennis courts and an all weather track.

The latter school is named after Mrs. Jewell Griffin Elsik who was a director of Health Services at AISD at the time of her retirement at the end of the school year of 1976. This statement is precise and more appropriate than a statement I used in my article "Special Ellis Island Ceremony Sought" in SPJST Vestnik dated June 25th, page 8, first left hand column at the bottom, that Elsik School was named after the Czech pioneer Elsik family. Thanks to Marguerite A. Elsik of Houston, sister - in - law of Jewell Griffin Elsik, everything is now as it should be. The very modern Elsik High School (2nd high school in Alief) was formally dedicated on May 2, 1976. Mrs. Jewell Elsik (this school is named after her) was a third of 6 daughters born to George and Bettie Griffin. After graduation from high school at Val Verde, she pursued her life's goal and graduated in 1931 from Scott and White Hospital School of Professional Nursing in Temple, Texas. She met her future husband, the Superintendent of Snook Consolidated Schools, Johnnie Elsik while working as private nurse there, and they were married in September 1934. Two sons were born to them -- Hubert in 1937 and Donald in 1943. Jewell Elsik became the first school nurse for the Aldine School District in 1949 where she worked for 7 years. In 1957 she accepted a position at Hermann Hospital and became a school nurse consultant with the Harris County Department of Education in 1962. Her husband, Johnnie Elsik, passed away in 1963 and shortly thereafter Mrs. Elsik moved closer to Alief. In 1967, she accepted the position of full time nurse with AISD and she retired as a director of the Health Services in 1976. Elsik

High School, adjacent to Hastings High School designed by Simmons Cavitt McKnight Weymouth Inc. architectural firm, cost 5.9 million dollars to build. It is one of the most modern schools in Houston area.

I enjoyed very much to teach Czech language classes at Elsik High School before the relocation of the Alief Evening School adjacent to Hastings High School North. I am also proud of the fact that 2 schools in Alief bear a Czech name. There are quite a few Czech - Americans living in Alief as corroborated in the local phone book; how to get them though to sign - up for the Czech language course being offered right in their hub?

Czech Class At Alief Alief Independent School District is again offering a Conversational Czech course right after Labor Day at its evening school which is established at Hastings High School North. This high school is located between Bellaire Blvd. in the south and Alief Clodine in the north, on the southwest side of the intersection of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the eastern part of Alief. The first class of this now offered 12 weeks' course will be on Wednesday, September 3rd and, henceforth, once a week -- always on Wednesdays -- from 7 to 9 p.m. The tuition, set by the school, will be $40.

County Czech Heritage Chapter Met

The Wharton County Czech Heritage Chapter met Wednesday, July 9th, at the Czech Catholic Home for the aged in Hillje. Father Thurmond, president, opened the meeting with prayers in the Czech language. Special guest was Sister Julianna Kouzech, assistant professor of Lady of the Lake University, San Antonio, Texas. Sister Julianna stated the Czech people are the second largest group in Texas, and Czech is the third most spoken language in Texas.

The purpose of the Czech Heritage organization is to prepare family histories, Czech school histories, Czech church histories, Czech family orchestra histories, and to study and practice the Czech traditions and heritage.

This being the Sesquicentennial Year of Texas, we invite you to join a chapter near you. All ' persons interested in the Czech Heritage are invited to attend a seminar on Saturday, September 27, 1986, at the SPJST Hall in Hillje from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Relax with friends, old and new, over a delicious meal. Then dance the hours away with a Czech dance.

Dinner will be served between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. The dance will be held from 8:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. Both activities will be at the Catholic Czech Club, 4930 Military Parkway.

Texas Czech Exhibit An exhibition of Czech history and artifacts in an informative display arena. See how the Czechs of Texas have progressed through the passing of time.

Display is located in the Centennial Building on the State Fairgrounds. The exhibition will be open for the duration of the Texas Sesquicentennial Fair September 26th through October 26th.

Admission to the fairgrounds allows admission to the exhibit.

Family Holds Reunion

Saturday, June 28, 1986 the family members of Matthew Marak held their third family reunion at S.S. Cyril & Methodious Catholic Church Parish Hall at Marak, Texas, with 155 family members attending.

Registration began at 10 a.m., followed by a barbecue dinner at 12:30 p.m. with Sister Mary Martin Haidusek, cDp of San Antonio leading the group with a prayer.

Following the dinner a meeting was held with Raymond Peters as Master of Ceremonies. Hattie Marak Pavlicek and Mary Marak Macha, both of Seymour, 2 surviving daughters of 9 children of the late Matthew Marak, were introduced as special guests.

Family members of the 9 Marak children -- Mollie, John, Roman, Emil, August, Matthew, Jr., Mary, Sophia and Hattie - were recognized and family group pictures taken.

Hattie Marak Pavlicek modeled a dress worn by family members in the 1850s as a special event of the evening program. Plans were made to hold a fourth reunion in 3 years with time and place to be announced at a later date.

An evening meal was served at 6 p.m., followed by a dance with Bedrick and Christine Peters as honored guests who observed their 50th wedding anniversary recently.

Family members attended from Shreveport, Louisiana, Mt. Clem mons, Michigan; New Orleans, Louisiana; Guymon, Oklahoma; West, Wharton, El Paso, Fort Worth, Dallas, Tyler, Odessa, Pasadena, Cedar Park, Austin, Dale, Seymour.

CC Rehearses For Czech Day At Fair

I haven't written for a few weeks but the time for the Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas is fast approaching.

Those going to perform need to be at every rehearsal. We have the song sheets and the music now. There will be a combined chorus of all singers from the state in one group. It is very important to be present at each rehearsal.

We had skipped the July 22nd rehearsal but now every second and fourth Tuesday until October, we will practice for this special performance.

From The Youth Counselors August Vestnik Project Czech Journalism In Texas 1879 The first Czech newspaper in Texas was established at La Grange in 1879.

Prior to that time, many Czechs subscribed to native language newspapers published in northern cities. F.J. Gleuckman published the La Grange weekly and called it simply, Texan. His ownership lasted five months - from February through July. The paper was sold then to Frank Lidiak, who renamed it Slovan. The journal was published in a magazine type format and was devoted to fiction, laws and customs of the country and current interest topics.

After five years under Lidiak's direction, Joseph Cada, a new owner, moved the press to Bryan, where it ceased publication in 1889. Probably

one reason for the decline and death of Slovan was the establishment of another Czech - language newspaper. called Svoboda. It too, was founded in La Grange in 1885, the same year that Slovan was moved to Bryan.

Augustin Haidusek was the first editor of Svoboda, serving until a New Yorker arrived to assume charge.

During the career of this gentleman, Svoboda went increasingly in debt until Haidusek was forced to take control again. After three years of hard work, the paper was free of debt, had over 2,000 subscribers and was the most influential Czech language newspaper in the state.

Today there are only a handful of Czech newspapers: Bratrske Listy, published by the Czech Brethren in Texas; Nasinec, organ of the KJT; and Vestnik, spokesman for the SPJST. But only one, Hospodar, published at West, Texas, is printed entirely in Czech. ***

From The District Youth Counselor District II YAD Results The YAD of District II was weL attended by both youth and adults.

The youth were full of enthusiasm and they were well - represented from the whole district. There were 50 youth who participated in the talent and royalty contest and there were 204 craft entries in the arts/crafts contest.

We had 2 kings and 7 queens competing in the royalty contest.

On the district level, all active youth clubs, except Round Rock, including Academy, Seaton, Taylor, Cyclone, Granger, Elgin, Beyersville and Lovelady were very well - represented.

I would like to thank the youth leaders/assistants, District II officers, SL President Howard Leshikar, Director Willie E. Kohutek, SYD Sue Meadows and many other brothers and sisters who were so efficient in helping make our YAD such a great success. It was through your help that made this day successful and we certainly do thank everyone. I would espcially wish to thank the 5 people who did all the tabulating. Brother Willie E. Kohutek supervised this committee; others on the committee were Lad Zatopek, Ronnie Rieger, Michael Kaiser and Frank Pajestka, Jr. The local lodge youth leaders with their assistants did their part and certainly did it well. Thank you again, one and all!

I also wish to thank the judges because they donated all their time and we certainly do appreciate the use of their time and talents. All the members of District II wish to say thank you to Lodge 177, Academy who was such a good host lodge and helped in many ways to make our YAD a great success. A special thank you to the members who worked that day in the bar and kitchen, also for the delicious meal they served and the use of their fine facilities.

Our special thanks to Bruce and Ann Tomastik and their children for setting up most of the tables, decorating the stage, etc. Thanks also to Melvin Steger, Geraldine Steger and my wife for setting up chairs/tables and preparing the hall for YAD. I will not name anymore, however, there were many leaders/assistants and others who helped throughout the entire afternoon.

Thanks to Brother Curtis Young, Brother Rudy Sefcik, his charming wife, Maxine, Brother Melvin Steger, Mrs. Curtis Young and Frank Pajestka, Jr. for getting all the names and pictures of our first place winners.

This was a great help.

Many thanks to my substitute Melvin Steger and all leaders/assistants for all of their devotion to the youth of District II and their willingness to help. I would also wish to include their wives/husbands and my wife for their help and support. All of these people worked hard and it takes a lot of cooperation from everyone to make the day a success.

Last but not least, I would also like to thank the youth for participating and to everyone who came and kept close attention and quietness. Thanks to all!

The royalty will compete for State King and Queen on the same date at the same place.

I would like to congratulate every contestant for a fine performance and I wish all the first place winners much luck whenever they perform at state.

The audience is also to be complimented for being quiet.

The youth received their point awards from the Supreme Lodge. The most active youth from each lodge were the lucky winners. The first place Junior of the District award was presented to Travis McKenney of

Lodge 74, Lovelady. The first place Teen of the District award went to Scott McKenney also of Lodge 74, Lovelady.

This year we were also honored to have a Beseda circle to perform for us and they were a group of youngsters from Lodge 74, Lovelady. They did a fine job and had no competition at district so they were first place winners and will compete at state level.

The MC for our talent portion of the program was Brother Melvin Steger who is my assistant and for the royalty portion, we were honored to have Lowanna Price, our 1985 District II Queen to MC the royalty. Both of them did an excellent job. Thank you Melvin and Lowanna. Thanks, again, to everyone.

Lodge- 40 YAD Winners Dear Vestnik Readers, District VI YAD was held on July 20, 1986. It was hosted by the E. Campo - Flillje lodge. In the next paragraphs are the results from"' our lodge.

In 6 - 9 Crafts -- Sharron Borak won first place in Science/Educational, second in Handicrafts and third in Foods.

For the 10 - 12 category there were two participants from our lodge.

Danny Borak won first place in each of the followin g categories: Foods, Hobby Kits and Handicrafts. Kim Kacal won first place ribbons in Science/Educational and Needlecraft.

She also won second in Foods and third in Handicrafts.

We also had winners in the 15 - 17 age group. Jody Henderson won first in Sewing, second in Foods, and third in both Hobby Kits and Handicrafts.

Lori Holub, another member of our club, won first in Handicrafts, second in Pictorial Arts and in Science/Educational and third in Foods.

Point awards were awarded to the following: Juniors -- 1, Kim Kacal; 2,

Danny Borak; 3, Sharron Borak; 4, Martha Bartos; 5, Darren Dybala.

Jody Henderson of our club was crowned District VI Queen for her third consecutive year. Sharron Borak was her duchess.

47 Has Many YAD Winners Lodge

Dear Members and Readers, Seaton Lodge 47 Youth Club meeting was held on July 7, 1986 at 7:30 p.m. There were 18 members and guests, Shannon Pechal, Lisa Greger, David Kortis, Jason Smith, Veronica Smith and 4 mothers.

We elected a new committee which w as a Recreation Committee at the meeting. I am the only one from our youth club who is celebrating a birthday this month. Door prizes for the month of July were won by Joshua Smith and Jason Reese.

District II YAD was held on July 13th at Academy Lodge 177. Winners from our lodge were: In Craft -- Laura Gibson, 1st place in Science/Education, Home Arts and 2nd in Foods; Lori Greger, 2nd in Home Arts; Tommy Gibson, 1st in Science/Education; James Billeck, 1st in Foods; Deanna Culp, 1st in Home Arts and 3rd in Foods; Melanie Koslovsky, 2nd in 6 to 9 Individual Talent; Lori Greger, 3rd in 6 to 9 Individual Talent; Tommy and Laura Gibson, 3rd in Junior Group Talent.

Our lodge was presented 3rd place for our Scrapbook. Everyone who entered something in YAD did a great job. Point winners from our lodge were Michael Morris, Daryl Kortis, Melanie Koslovsky, James Billeck, Deanna Culp, Lori Greger and Tracy Klusacek.

Lodge 49, Rowena Youth Club News Our last meeting was held July 10th at 7:30 p.m. at the SPJST Hall in Rowena. There were 9 members and 4 adults present.

A discussion was held on what a success the District IV YAD had been on June 22nd at Rowena. Several of the members are looking forward to competing at the State YAD in August.

The members are also looking forward to attending camp on August 1st through 5th. It was decided the members should meet at 1 p.m. at the SPJST Hall in Rowena on August 1st to leave for camp.

It was decided to change our meeting date and time beginning in August. All members please note we will now meet on the second Saturday of each month at 9 a.m.

The meeting was adjourned.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

Saturday, May 24th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Celestino Say officiating. Burial followed in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Kubena Funeral Home.

CALVIN LEE KOLAR, 57, of Victoria, who died June 27, 1986 at his residence.

Brother Kolar was born 12 September 1928, in LaSalle to the late John and Annie Hejl Kolar. He had been employed for 30 years as a sheet metal worker with Alcoa.

A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, Brother Kolar was also a member of SPJST, the United Steel Workers of America Union, and of the Edna Presbyterian Church.

Funeral services were held at the Colonial Funeral Home Chapel at 3 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Harry of the Johnson, pastor Edna/Vanderbuilt Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial was in the Colonial Gardens Cemetery.

Survivors include his widow, Jo Ann Kolar of Victoria; two sons, Steven Louis Kolar and Dale Wayne Kolar of Victoria; two sisters, Lena Short of Corpus Christi, Dorothy Mowry of Houston; two brothers, Eugene Kolar and J. B. Kolar of LaSalle.

Swinford, a graduate of Northside High School of Ft. Worth, Texas, is the director of meetings and conventions for WNS, Inc., the Houston - based franchisor of Wicks 'N' Sticks candle shops, Deck The Walls and Prints 'N Things art and custom framing stores, and Wallpapers To Go wallpaper stores.

Swinford was described by the publication, one of the leading journals in the meetings' industry, as a "dynamic innovator whose work is bringing increased professionalism to the field."

Swinford joined WNS, Inc., in 1977. She coordinates two conventions for 1,400 attendees and 14 smaller meetings each year. She is a member of Meeting Planners International.

Kathryne's mother is a member of Lodge 92, and her father was also a member.

He entered the Navy as a Carpenter's Mate Third Class, but at the Iwo Jima landing he had already attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He was called to report to the commander. He was given the assignment to make a flagpole. He did admit that it was an odd request, especially at that time but, what the heck, this is war, and they may just need something like a flagpole. The flagpole was to be above normal size, in length and width; little did he know that the pole was to be used to raise the American flag on Mt. Surabaci on Iwo Jima.

So today when you see Joe Spacek looking at the picture where the

Marines are raising the flag, you can bet your bottom dollar that he is not looking only at the flag, but the fine WORKMANSHIP on that pole; at least that is what he tells us.

After going to Australia, the Phillipines and most all the other islands in the Pacific, he returned to the States in 1945 and was discharged at Camp Walters on October 1945.

After 32 years in Government Service as a supervisory engineer technician, he is retired and makes his home with his wife, Viola, in San Antonio, Texas.

Funeral services were held at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church with the Rev. Clement Quainoo officiating.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. at the Fayetteville Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers were David Palinek, John Barber, Edward Chalupa, Sam Popp, Ricky Chovanec and Donald Barber.

Receives National Recognition Kathryne Swinford, daughter of EstaBelle Hubenak and the late Joe P. Hubenak, Sr. has been named one of the nation's top 10 meeting planners

Joe T. Spacek

Veteran Recalls World War II Brother Spacek, a member of SPJST Lodge 133 in San Antonio, remembers Mt. Surabaci on the island of Iwo Jima very well.

Joe T. Spacek, who served in the Navy from July 1942 through October 1945, served on the attack transport USS James O'Hara. Although he served his country as many others did in World War II, he did have a very unusual assignment given to him, which later was associated with a very important event, and which today is written in our history books. I will tell you about it later in our story.

Let us begin with some of the places his ship transported the Army and Marines. Joe was involved in seven different invasions of Sicily, Salerno, Saipan, Leyte, Lingayln, Anguar and Iwo Jima. In July 1943 the first invasion in North Africa, then the invasion of Sicily in 1943, taking part in landing our own Texas National Guard, The 36th Division, also at Salerno, and Naples, Italy. In the early part of 1944 the ship was re - assigned to the Far East.

Once again, the James O'Hara took part in the landings on Guadalcanal, Leyte, Guam and Saipan. Then came the big one, IWO JIMA in 1945. Of course, we know what happened there; it was a tough battle and very expensive, but a part of real estate that had to be taken. Joe tells the story with a lot of modesty; trying to get this story from him is like pulling a wisdom tooth.

Wedding Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Henry E. Vitek celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a dinner and reception at the Granger Brethren Fellowship Building in Granger on July 13th. The reception was hosted by the couple's daughters, Laura and

National Award Winner The United States Achievement Academy announced today that Sheryl Danette Macha has been named a United States National Award winner in Foreign Language.

This award is a prestigious honor very few students can ever hope to attain. In fact, the Academy recognizes less than 10 percent of all American high school students.

Sheryl Danette Macha, who attends Needville High School,was nominated for this National Award by Mrs. Judith Reyes, a Spanish teacher at the school.
