Members of Lodge No. 29 are very proud of their new float which has been appearing in the Central Texas Parades. The float won first place as "Most Beautiful" in the Granger Lake

Taylor TIF Days Parade and Round Rock Frontier Days Parade.

It is also scheduled for Taylor Rodeo Parade and Austin Aqua Fest Parade.

Fest Parade and won second place in "Most Original" in the Pflugerville Deutschen Pfest Parade.

Sunday, July 13th, we attended the District II Youth Achievement Day at Lodge No. 177 in Academy. There was a good attendance of youth and adults at the event.

DYC Frank Klinkovsky's report and the District II YAD pictures will be published in the next issue.

Lodge 177 proved to be gracious hosts and there was a lot of fraternal fellowship displayed. It is pleasant to see such friendly competition among the youth and fraternal enthusiasm displayed by the adults. Even though the weather outside was hot, inside the hall it was comfortable for everyone to enjoy and witness the entrants' talents in various categories.

Congratulations to all the participants, DYCs, leaders/assistants, parents and, of course, the young man who fried all the delicious fish and chicken outdoors in the hot sun; he is truly a faithful fraternalist and our hats off to him!

The overall day's activities were indeed worth while attending and District II members should be proud of their youngsters who continue to participate and learn good training from SPJST leaders who care about them. Keep up the eood work! *** You will notice that, in this issue, are some articles included for your reading attention.

One is an additional list of donors who made donations (which can be changed off on your 1986 IRS tax report) to the CEFT for the establishment of an endowment (Czech Chair) for the permanent teaching of the Czech language in our State of Texas. It seems that SPJST members and lodges are really getting behind this worthy cause.

About 2 million Social Security recipients began receiving larger checks July 3rd. After reviewing beneficiaries' earnings, the Social Security Administration decided that the 2 million were due increases, based on 1984 figures not previously recorded. The raises average $14.30 per month, plus an average of $265 in retroactive payments. The increases go to people who retired before 1984 but had some earnings in that year. Some 500,000 recipients whose cases co.uld not be handled on an automated basis will have to wait until year's end for their increases. *** The Food and Drug Administration has banned the use of sulfites as preservatives for fruits and vegetables served in restaurants and sold in supermarket salad bars. Allergic reactions to sulfites -- chemicals used to keep food looking fresh -- are suspected to have contributed to at least 13 deaths. The ban, effective August 8th, does not include sulfites used in fresh potatoes, wine and some beer. The FDA says it will deal with potatoes later. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has proposed that sulfites in wine and beer be disclosed. An estimated 500,000.

Americans are allergic to sulfites.

Reactions range from nausea and diarrehea to fatal shock. *** Nature's most underrated killer is lightning, which caused 74 deaths last â– ear, notes the National Oceanic and At mospheric Administration. Most at risk are outdoorsmen, particularly golfers. If caught outside in a thunderstorm, avoid standing under tall, isolated, trees, near telephone posts or on hilltops. Get away from open water, metal equipment, wire fences, clotheslines, rails or open vehicles. Never lie flat on the ground; the earth is an excellent conductor. ***

The Customs Service reminds travelers that any foreign purchases that are mailed home separately for personal use do not qualify for the standard $400 duty exemption. You can, however, send up to $50 in gifts duty - free to a friend or relative. If you plan to send something home from overseas, it is a good idea to contact the nearest customs office for more information. It is listed in the phone directory under U.S. Government, Dept. of Treasury. ***

Does your car's engine ping, rattle or knock? If so, you may be using gasoline with an octane rating that is too low. Over a period of time, it could damage the engine. Octane ratings are marked on gas pumps with bright yellow stickers. If your engine is knocking, buy fuel with a slightly higher octane or try another brand with the same octane. The octane level recommended by the car's manufacturer can usually be found in the owner's manual. As your car gets older, it may require a higher octane. ***

The comprehensive rating document was reviewed by the Supreme Lodge during the recently concluded Board meeting and officers and directors were elated that the Society received an A (Excellent) Rating.

The SPJST has not previously been rated by Best's but has sought their rating for some five years. The obtaining of the rating has been a joint effort of the Vice President, SecretaryTreasurer, and Financial Secretary.

The A.M. Best Company recently notified the SPJST Home Office that the Society had been assigned an A (Excellent) Rating for the 1986 issue of

BEST'S INSURANCE REPORTS.

The Supreme Lodge has authorized a Taroky Tournament for all SPJST members 18 years and older. The fee is $5 and should be paid to your lodge secretary. There will not be a tournament played at the local level; only at the state.

We feel that this will provide an opportunity for members to come together and revitalize the game of Taroky.

The tournament will be hosted by Lodge No. 29, Taylor, on July 26th beginning at 10 a.m.

All lodge secretaries must have the participants' names in before July 1st.

SPJST Officials Pleased With Rating

Dear Members and Friends: The SPJST Lodge 13 held its regular monthly meeting on June 15th. The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m.

by Vice President Sister Mildred Horak. President Claud Flippen was present but still is a little under the weather since his surgery. Brother Flippen, we are all glad to see you doing so well under the circumstances.

It just doesn't seem like a meeting if you are not present.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. Sister Dorothy Rachael read the secretary's report. Sister Magdeline gave the mortuary fund report and Sister. Doris Balcar gave the treasurer's report. All were approved as read.

Old business was discussed. The speakers, belonging to the Fire Department, still have not been found .They have been missing for sometime. If anyone knows where they are please let someone know. In the meantime the Fire Department has purchased new speakers and will rent them out to organizations wishing to use them.

Under new business, we had a young man visit our lodge meeting with the purpose apologizing to everyone for having been caught consuming alcoholic beverages at one of our dances. He asked to be allowed to return and promised never to do the same. His apology was ! accepted.

Brother Flippin talked to him at length about the trouble he had caused and also let him know how much we all appreciated him coming forward to

apologize. I think it took great courage for this young man to do this. He was allowed to return with the stipulation that he check in with the floor chairman each time he attends a dance.

This will be for one year. I wish all young people would realize the trouble they cause when they consume alcoholic beverages on the premises. I think this young man truly learned a lesson.

The light bill was discussed.

Someone asked the question -- hom, much does our electricity bill run each month? The answer was: between $900 and $1,000; lots of money.

Sister Mary Kubena was recognized for her many years of work and dedication to the SPJST. Sister Mary has been active since the hall organized. She has been a faithful worker since we built our new hall but has decided to retire from helping with the cleaning. Thanks, Miss Mary, for a job well done!

It was decided to purchase a dozen new tables for the hall. The floor chairman said it was a problem at larger occasions that required more tables. Father Isidore was to purchase these for us.

There was some discussion about other small matters but nothing was brought to motion.

This day being Father's Day, we want to congratulate all fathers. May you always rememer that it's the small things you do with your children that they will remember. Take time to enjoy them. Some day soon you will wonder where the years have gone.

Your little girls and boys will grow up to be young women and men and you will have missed out on the best part of their lives. Take time to enjoy them, now.

I have to apologize for this letter being late. The older I get the slower I get get.

18 Elgin Meeting

President Roy Simank opened our June 17th meeting which was attended by 21 faithful members.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Brother Leslie Gustafson.

Secretary Gilbert Kubicek read the minutes from the May . meeting. With no corrections to be made, they were accepted as read.

The roll call of officers showed all present except the treasurer and youth leader.

Financial Secretary Lambert Peterson reported that we had 3 new members, namely, Scott and Shelly Smith and George Liardon. We also had 2 transferees, Laura and Carolyn Vrana. This gave us a total of 589 members. We need to hustle some more members so we can get over the 600 barrier. We do welcome our new members and hope that they get involved with the different worthwhile functions that exist with the SPJST. The reports from the different officers and chairpersons looked very favorable. Thus all that hard work that our devoted work members put in is commended.

The lighting of the hall and the dress code were discussed under new business. We are sticking with the no hat, no shorts dress code. We have a fine place here and we plan to keep it that way.

With no further discussions, the meeting was adjourned, followed by fellowship and, as always, a few domino games.

Society of South Texas Singers and the Victoria Czech Singers were asked to perform. Edward Malik got together a group to play during the evening. The youth club put together a nice skit for the evening's entertainment.

The Czech Fest was held on June 29th in the Victoria Community Center and a nice crowd attended. A good time was had by all.

The refreshments for May were by Lois Elles; in June by Mary Raska and in July we had some kolaches left over from the Czech Fest.

In June the lodge donated $25 to the American Cancer Society. The members voted to participte in the Victoria Fest on September 27th and 28th.

On June 22nd, Vlasta and Daniel S■ oboda celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. May they have many more. Daryl Elles, a graduate of Stroman Hi gh School in Victoria, received a four - year $8,000 scholarship from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Elles is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Elles. He and his family are all members of Lodge No. 32.

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar sent two letters on the Taroky and Domino tournaments.

At the July meeting, Joel Wesley Schmidt was appointed chairman for the lodge's part in the Victoria Fest.

He will need a co - chairman.

Lodge 35, Elk To Go Direct Billing

Flag Hall participated in the Festival held in Temple on Memorial Day Weekend.

There was much discussion on the trip to the State Fair in Dallas this year We will either go Saturday, October 4th or Sunday, October 5th; the Czech Day will last 3 days, this year, it will be a nice celebration due to the Texas Sesquicentennial. Please start thinking about going, and, at our next meeting, I will have information on how many buses we will be taking and how much it will cost, anyone interested is invited. Also any local lodge members are especially invited to join us.

Julia Bedrich, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bedrich, was winner of the All - American Girl contest sponsored by Teen Magazine. Mr. Ed Bedrich was a very active member of Lodge 24. We want to congratulate Julia.

This is a condensed version of the May, June and July meetings.

President Franklin Elles presided over the May meeting and, in his absence, Vice President Adolf presided over the ones in June and July.

In May, the lodge received thank you notes from the Spirit of Youth for sending three children to camp, also for the lodge's donation to the Statue of Liberty Fund.

Monica Vanek was accepted as a member.

The, lodge was in the process of preparing for the Czech Fest on June 29th. Frances Motal and the youth club made the table decorations; Leo Majek's Orchestra was engaged to play for the dance; Sandra Schmidt made the signs for the booths in both Czech and English; the Czech Heritage

Our meeting was held Sunday, July 13, 1986 at 3 p.m. President Henry Breitkreutz called the meetin g to order with Flag Bearer Dawn Pavelka leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read by Rosemary Banik and approved as read. Treasurer's report was also read and approved as read.

Youth Leader Louise Burney had :a thank you to the lodge for the bus the lodge furnished for our youth club to go to YAD. We were furnished with some great entertainment by the youth club. Jesika Tierce did a tumbling act she had done at District III YAD. Timmy and Tommy Pavelka and Jana and Robin Breitkreutz did a lipsync to the tune of "Don't Mess With My Tutu." A well - done job to all! Jesika Tierce and Stefanee Callaway will go to State YAD to represent Lodge 35.

Needless to say, we are very proud of these girls and wish the best of luck.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Velma Clemmons, Jana Breitkreutz, Henry Breitkreutz and Nathan Tierce.

Congratulations to Henry Breitkreutz on celebrating the 24th anniversary of his 39th birthday.

During the 26th of July dance, when the Country Lights will play, there will be a keg of beer. This beer will sell for 5 cents a glass until the keg is gone.

Albert Banik announced that our lodge will go on direct billing in November or December.

We had one guest Karen Miller, present. Thirty - three members were present with the adult door prize going to Ernest Clemmons. John Phelan was called for the youth door prize but, not being present, Tracy Breitkreutz received the youth door prize.

47, Seaton To Host District II Meeting

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our last lodge meeting was held on Monday, July 7th at 7:30 p.m. with Vice President Alfred Klusacek opening the meeting.

Flag Bearers Heidi Schroeder and Tracy Klusacek brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Brother Jerry Trampota, 67, who passed away recently. Until his recent 11/2 - year illness, he was active in lodge activities helping at workdays and with bar/kitchen chores at dances/picnics and regular at meetings. He had served as a trustee and on other committees for several years. We lost a good neighbor and friend and the family lost a good husband, father and grandfather. May he rest in eternal peace and honor to his memory forever. Deepest sympathy to the surviving family.

Visitors recognized were Brother Jerry Prochazka of Crosby (District V director), Ann Balusek and Lonnie, Olga and Freddie Schroeder. Brother Bill and Sister Martha Wofford were asked to stand becatise this was their first meeting for them since they transferred to our lodge. We enjoyed having all of you present and do come again when the opportunity arrives.

Fifty - three lodge members registered at the meeting.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers and sales representatives with all officers present. Only correspondence was an invitation to the 13th anniversary of Lovelady Lodge 74, but the event had been held before this meeting.

New members accepted were Anton F. Pechal, Angela Denise Pechal and Doris Ann T \ I och. Conversions included policies of Daniel E. Kohutek, Edward F. Heil, Amanda B. Paulson and Meagan A. Ray. Welcome to each named and may you all become active in the lodge.

The sick list for June included Brothers Tom Merka and Lanny White and Sisters Georgia Sodek and Sharon Mikeska. They all had surgery so I hope you are recovering nicely and well on the way to good health.

On the officers' reports, Brother Dan Balusek spoke on the improvements and new furnishings that rest homes are receiving and the additions to the Needville Rest Home.

Persons wishing to buy these furnishings may do so by contacting a district rest home director for the prices, etc. Treasurer Lucy Mihatsch and Financial Secretary Adeline Kohutek gave their respective reports and Sister Kohutek read the trustees' minutes. Audit Committee Chairman J.D. Chlapek gave their second quarterly report. Chairpersons all gave good reports.

Next, Brother Prochazka was called on to speak. He expressed his pleasure of being at our lodge meeting and commented on the precise system of communication between lodge members; the detailed reports of all chairpersons and officers and auditors, too. He also stated that District II Director Brother Willie E. Kohutek is an asset at the Supreme Lodge; that he has good ideas, is a friend to all and is very conscious of all activities carried on by the SL. Brother Jerry, we enjoyed your visit and hope you can come, again, soon.

Wednesday, July 23, 1986—VESTNiK/5 DYC Frank Klinkovsky invited all to District II YAD at Academy Lodge 177 on Sunday, July 13th. Since this has passed, I will report on some results. We had 36 members from Lodge 47 but it should have been about twice that amount because Academy is not as far as most of the other lodges. The competition was keen in the king and queen contests, as well as talent and the crafts. Everyone should be making plans for the next District II fall meeting at Seaton Star Hall on September 14th which will be a family - fun carnival as last year.

Congratulations to all YAD winners and better luck next time to who did not win first! District II camp is coming up this week and I hope everyone has a safe fun - time.

Youth Leader Rosie Craft gave her report 18 members and 4 visitors present and she also commented on the trip to "Wet 'n Wild" last month.

Under new business, we changed the October 5th meeting date to Sunday, October 12th.

Birthdays observed in June by members were Sisters Louise Marek and Kathy Pavlica and Brothers Frank Spanhel, Willie Kohutek, Jerome Orsag, Jimmie and Lonnie Schroeder.

Wedding anniversaries will be observed by Brother Louis and Sister Louise Marek "57 years" and Brother Jerry and Sister Annie Chupik "54 years." Happy anniversary to these couples and happy birthday to those named and many, many more!

Door prize winners were Brothers Woodrow Marek and Emil J. Hejl.

We enjoyed the drinks following the meeting and the fellowship visiting among the members. Next meeting will be Sunday, August 3, 1986 at 2 p.m.

Mary Werner read a thank you note from Martha Marx, S.A.D., for the donation to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville.

Several items of business were taken care of.

Gilbert Walzel and Charlie Matcek were winners in the drawing of door prizes drawn by Gilbert Walzel.

Our next meeting will be held on August 12th at 7 p.m. We adjourned to celebrate the birthday of our President Charlie Matcek by having cake and coffee served to us by Mary Matcek.

92, Ft. Worth Holds July Meeting

Dear Members and Friends: On July 13th our monthly meeting was opened by President Albert Kubala with all other officers present.

Our youth led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Last month's minutes were read by Secretary Christine Zich and were approved. Treasurer Raymond Hubenak gave a detailed and

informative financial report including an account of the extreme raise in tax rates and appraisals. This was followed by an accounting from Financial Secretary Evelyn Spacek.

Vice President John Paprskar told us of the activities and findings of the Board of Trustees. Mary Ann Krivanek related that the Auditing Committee found all figures in order.

We were informed that 9 members over age 65 received birthday cards.

Greetings were sent to sick members Margaret Kratky, Mary Picha and Florence Greer. We were pleased to see Richard Hubenak back after recent surgery but were sorry to learn that Rudolph Wruble was returned to the hospital on Sunday morning. It was with sorrow we heard of the death of Bruce Dolkos who was stricken unexpectedly at Six Flags. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Dolkos and grandson of longtime member Sister Vlasta Dolkos.

On a happier note congratulations were sent to Courtney Cooper graduating in Wilton, Connecticut.

She is the daughter of Ben and Lillian (Matusevitch) Cooper and she will be attending Rice University in Houston.

We would like to sincerely thank Editor Sefcik for his complimentary tribute to our lodge in a recent issue of the Vestnik concerning the activities of the District III YAD held here and we were pleased that he and his wife were present on that day and were active in taking photos. While on the suject, may we also thank State Youth Director Sue Meadows for her attendance, also Bessie Petr and EVERY person who helped and whose name I may have missed. It was gratifying to have the company of Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and his wife and their children, including their young exchange student from Germany. Also in attendance was Director Sid Pokladnik. Many kudos to Gordon and Cheryl Hubenak for their work with the children and compliments to Cheryl and her good job as MC at the meet.

Last but not least, a big THANK YOU to all you young folks and parents from all the other lodges who made the effort to attend and gave us such a delightful program. You were the necessary ingredient and without you it could not have happened. On Sunday Gordon announced the election of the youth club officers of our lodge for the year June 1986 - 87.

He also said that they were planning a pizza party on August 18th to recruit new members.

We hope that everyone passing through the vestibule noticed the lovely, authentically - dressed Czech doll. It was donated by Ed Farazial and its costume was made by his sister.

It's summer traveling time again and Clara Cohn excitedly told me she was in Las Vegas and won 500, then in the next breath explained it was 500 nickels. John and Joy Paprskar lately returned from San Francisco. John was sent on business by his firm but Joy went along to enjoy the weekend when he was free from duties. Justine Chaloupka has been to Canada and the World Fair and Martha and Dick Durham also made a motor trek to Frisco and points between.

When our meeting adjourned we found that Ron Holcomb along with Dick Durham (and little grandson Paxton) had been frying catfish outside plus fries and hushpuppies. In the kitchen, Evelyn Spacek, Clara Cohn, Justine Chaloupka and Martha Durham worked completing the meal that everyone enjoyed. Next month's hostesses are Mary and Joyce Tesar.

Joyce reminds us to remember the dance with the Don Peachy Orchestra on Saturday, August 30th. Good health to all and plan to be at the August meeting.

[NO AUGUST MEETING] Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by President Jerry Milan, and he led us in the Pledge of Allegiance; we remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased Brother Andy Winters. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family and may he rest in peace.

Brother Milan welcomed all our guests.

All officers were present and all the reports were approved as read. Our youth leader, Sister Carolyn Cleveland, and Brother Bob left that Saturday for a week in Jamaica to celebrate Carolyn's 40th birthday. (We were sorry to hear that he ended up in the hospital of food poisoning late Sunday night and was released Monday.)

A thank you was read from Brother Jeff and Natalie Maly. Sister Pavey also read a nice thank you note from Brother Otto Hanus of our SPJST Museum.

Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan stopped by the museum on their way to Fredericksburg and took a Manikin to Brother Otto and enjoyed their visit and with State Youth Director Sue Meadows.

Sister Pavey reported on all cards sent, and a greeting received from Brother Roy and Sister Lydia Alholm.

They are kept busy and enjoying every minute of it, meeting many friends they met in the Vienna Slet in 1982.

She said Brother Rome Milan carried the American flag in the Slet that was held in Zurich, Switzerland.

Rome and Tal Milan are due home this weekend. They will have a lot to talk about.

Sister Rose Steinman gave a good report on the District III YAD that we all enjoyed at Lodge No. 92. We were proud of our youth member Chris Simek who won first place in ages 6 to 9 in Constructed Items, he is looking forward to the State YAD. Chris is the son of Brother Charles and Sister Georgia Simek. Congratulations, Chris! We also extend congratulations to Staci Hubenak and her Duchess Kelli Kubala and to all the contestants.

They did a terrific job.

Congratulations also to Brother Frank Prochaska. He received a beautiful diamond ring for coming in 11th place out of 3500 Ford salesmen in his district. Keep up the good work!

Brother Frank Kovar is in Czechoslovakia attending the Czech classes at Charles University in Praha.

Glenn and Sister MaryIn Douglass just returned from a vacation in Florida. They visited Disneyland and all the surrounding sights. They reported a wonderful time.

We missed Sister Anna Johnson at the meeting. She flew to New Orleans and joined her sister - in - law for a cruise. We know she will enjoy the islands.

We are happy to report that Brother Frankie Milan is doing well after his surgery. I talk to Brother Frank Picha daily, checking on Mary; she had a triple bypass surgery on June 30th. She suffered a stroke the next day and is

still critically ill and still in the Intensive Care Unit. We pray for her recovery. Get well wishes also for Brother Rudy Wruble of Lodge 92, who is in the Harris Hospital.

There is a lot of excitement in the Milan family. Vera Matustikova Carpenter who came here from Kunovice, Uherske - Hradiste will wed Bruce Richards in a garden wedding in' Canada; her mother Vera and grandmother Frances Vitovski will be here for the wedding on July 26th.

They plan later to come and visit the family in Fort Worth after seeing the sights in Canada and Seattle, Washington where Bruce and Vera will reside. We wish them much happiness.

We took time out from the meeting to watch the style show that Sister Henrietta Milan got together. It was narrated by Sister Donna Parker. I know I have missed some, but they all did a good job and there were a lot of laughs.

Challenge To All SPJST Members

Lodge 177 , Academy Heard Reports President Otis Beck of Academy Lodge 177 called the July 9th meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. Members stood for the pledge to the flag.

Treasurer Josie Tomastik was absent in the roll call of officers.

Congratulations are in order for Josie and Jerry Don on the birth of their grandbaby. Twelve members were present.

Correspondence was from the Supreme Lodge on Direct Billing and kind words for Helen Bland on the good work she had done while financial secretary; the lodge also gave Helen a hand. A thank you card was received from Louis Driska. We were glad to have Louis back at the meeting and bingo. We need about 12 more members like Brother Louis; he is always willing!

Our 2 new members are Glen and Kathy Ross.

Treasurer's report was given by Youth Leader Ann Tomastik.

We had no sunshine report in the absence of Libbie Bartek and we missed her smiling face. Libbie is another faithful member and worker who is always missed when she isn't there.

Board of Trustees' Report -- All members present except for Edward Bartek; material is ordered for the

per member so if all SP,IST members in the State of Texas would match this amount, it would go a long way to help in the project. The organization helped restore the Statue of Liberty so let's get in there and help restore the Battleship Texas; it is the oldest battleship in a state park and has a grand history, commissioned in 1914 and served in two World Wars and yet it has the smallest budget trying to keep it in condition for all of us to visit and enjoy its history, so it needs a little help.

Jerry Mikus has returned from the National Bass Tournament for the deaf. He and his partner, Mr. Krager from Louisiana, caught a total of 11 lbs. and 2 ozs. and won 8th place even though it rained for 3 days of their trip. Congratulations, Jerry!

There was a lot of discussion about financing and ways to improve relations at the lodge along with some criticism, but criticism in a way is a compliment: It shows you did something too important for the critic to ignore.

One member transferred into our lodge, namely, Timothy Mynarcik, and 7 new members Britni Stump, Marcia Stump, Michele Burnea, Johnna Dominey, James Dominey, Melinda Gipson and Stephanie Schneider. Congratulations to B.J. Hiavaty for his efforts in selling these new members some insurance.

Jerry Mikus received 8th place position during the National Bass Tournament for the deaf which was held recently. (country/western band) playing for our pleasure so mark your calendar and be there.

There was a good crowd at the July 5th dance with Jim Bochnicek even though a lot of members were on vacation. Maybe next year we can have them on a better weekend and have a bigger crowd.

New Year's Eve dance was discussed and who to have play for the dance, also the amount our lodge could spend; it was tabled until next, meeting in August. We would like to have more members present and have your opinion on who to have and vote on the motion on the floor.

88 Birthday Club

On July 9th at 11:25 a.m. President Rita Alexander called the meeting to order. She asked Sister Pearl Hanka, who was sitting in for Sister Rosalee Kostom who is vacationing in Europe, to read the minutes from the previous meeting.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave her report which she does real well. It was a good report.

Sunshine Reporter Sister Mary Kosut sent get well cards to the sisters who were ill and birthday cards to the sisters who had birthdays in July.

The sisters who were ill were Minnie Bravenec and Florena Taake; we wish them a speedy recovery. Sister Ida (Grandma) Hanka was taken to Polly Ryan Hospital this morning. Our payers are for her.

It was good to see Sister Lillian Finn back at the meeting. Her husband, Harry, was back too, and doing fine from his surgery. We missed both of you.

Thanks for the skillet Sister Bessie Lero donated to the Birthday Club.

Sister Helen Hegwood was all smiles and excited over her first grandchild,a granddaughter. We who have grandchildren know the feeling.

Hostesses for July were Sisters Esther Holton and Bessie Dewer who cooked for Mary Tilich and Inez Jeanes. The second Wednesday Ardith McCellan cooked for Inez Jeanes.

The meeting closed by singing "Happy Birthday" to the sisters who had a birthday in July.

East Texas Lodge 191 Activities This time it's HOWDY instead of ALOHA. I kinda got lazy and delayed on this article, not that we haven't had a good time in between. On June 14th we danced to my DJ western music and on June 28th we danced to the Southern Touch western band. We had very good crowds for the month of June and, again, we want to thank G.W. and Murriel Hawkins and Blackie and Veda Bourge for hosting the month of June and thanks to all who helped make the June activities such a big success.

Also in June, Lodge 191 had a very special event. Lodge 191 completed another long range objective. The first $500 scholarship was awarded to Lufkin High School graduate John Dunks, the son of Walley and Patsy Dunks, who are all members of Lodge 191. Sam Slaydon made the presentation at the Lufkin High School commencement.

July 8th we had our lodge meeting and attendance was very light as expected through summertime activities and vacationing of our members. July 12th we danced to DJ Towers western music and the ladies had homemade ice cream. Everyone had a good time. July 26th we will have an anniversary dance. Roy West's KOUNTRY KICKERS will be playing for us. Members will be admitted free and guests $5. Members are asked to bring a covered dish - potluck. Come one, come all and have a good time.

Texas Czech State Fair Celebration Czech - Americans from throughout the United States are expected to gather in Dallas, Texas on October 3, 4 and 5, 1986 to honor the Czech Moravian community of Texas and celebrate the sesquicentennial anniversary of Texas' independence.

Texans of Czech descent comprise a large segment of the state's population. The Czech language, brought to Texas by 19th century immigrants, remains the third most widely - spoken language in the state.

Organizers expect that this event, which will be a once - in - a - lifetime celebration for many, will be a :gathering place for representatives of the entire Czech - Moravian population of Texas. Various programs and entertainments, a banquet, a symposium devoted to historical subjects, a special bus tour of Dallas, polka dances and other activities have been planned for October 3rd and 4th. The celebration will climax on Sunday, October 5th with programs in the Cotton Bowl and at the state fairgrounds in Dallas. An exhibition illustrating the history and cultural heritage of Czech Texans is scheduled to open at the State Fair on September 26th and run for 31 days.

The participation of groups and individuals from throughout the United States is needed to insure the success of this celebration. Particularly ambitious is the organizers' goal of filling the Cotton Bowl with participants and spectators. The Cotton Bowl programs will showcase several aspects of this group's colorful cultural heritage.

1. Dancing of the Beseda, the national dance of Czechoslovakia; of singing Choral 2.

Czechoslovakian folk songs; 3. Choreographed dancing and singing by children and youth groups; 4. A gymnastic exhibition similar to the gigantic Spartakiada exhibitions of Czechoslovakia by gymnasts of the Sokol organizations.

It is expected that each of the numerous Czech - Moravian communities in Texas will be represented in the Cotton Bowl program by Beseda dancers and other participants. Instructions and information about each of these activities are available by writing to the American - Czech Culture Society.

Time still remains for interested groups to obtain instruction materials and information about participating in the programs. Instructions and music for dancing the Beseda are available by writing the address listed below to the attention of "Beseda." Choral groups may request the words and music for the choral program by writing to "Song." Children and youth groups may participate in the programs by requesting instructions from "Youth." Inquiries about the Sokol gymnastic exhibition should be addressed to "Sokol." An information packet dealing with group and individual accommodations at local hotels, motels, RV parks and in the local community is available by writing "Housing."

Organizers of the Texas Czech State Fair Sesquicentennial Celebration expect that this special event in Dallas on October 3, 4 and 5, 1986 will be the highpoint of the commemorative sesquicentennial activities for the hundreds of thousands of Texans of Czech ancestry.

Vice President Marjorie Matula presided over the June 19th quarterly meeting of the Victoria County Czech Heritage society. Several future projects were discussed.

Included in the discussions were the society's participation in the SPJST Czech Fest on June 29th. The group sponsored a booth co - chaired by Mary Joyce Hermes and H.B. Milberger. Joseph Pustka, banner chairman, presented ideas for the society's banner.

Texas Czech Bands, the society's Sesquicentennial project, was brought up, with members being reminded that much information is still needed.

Thadious Polasek, Czech instructor from Moravia, Texas, presented slides and gave a brief history of Czechoslovakia and of his several trips to that country to study the language.

Since then we have learned that he has been awarded a $1,000 grant from CESAT for expenses to attend a 3 week language seminar at Charles University, Prague, CSSR. July 7 - 30, 1986.

V.T. Kallus, Joseph Pustka and H.S. Milberger were appointed to the Nominating Committee and will report at the September quarterly meeting.

Eight society members (among others) have completed two semesters of Czech classes at Victoria College during the 1985 - 1986 year.

At the March 20th quarterly meeting, Fred and Elizabeth Stock bauer, gave an interesting talk on their Czechoslovak trip and showed many Czech items that they purchased while there. We apologize for reporting this so late, but we wanted to be sure they received the credit due them.

A list of events scheduled include the September 18th quarterly meeting and election of officers; September 27th State meeting and Czech Genealogy Workshop in Hillje; October 3th - 5th, Czech Days at the State Fair in Dallas; October 16th Victoria County Czech Heritage Day; October 19th, "Czech Heritage Festival" and second Texas State Taroky Tournament.

A Texas Czech History Symposium What: The History of the Czechs of Texas: A Symposium When: October 3 and 4, 1986 Where: SP JST Lodge 84, 2625 Floyd Street, Dallas, Texas As a part of the Texas Sesquicentennial Celebration, a symposium devoted to the history of Texans of Czech ancestry will take place in Dallas on October 3rd and 4th. The symposium is sponsored by the American - Czech Culture Society under the direction of Leo Baca of the Czech Heritage Society.

The symposium is one of a series of activities in Dallas on October 3rd, 4th and 5th, which are sponsored by the Czechs of Texas and which are expected to draw visitors from throughout the United States.

From the time of the early European colonization of Texas, through Texas' War for Independence and up through modern times, Czechs have made important contributions to their state.

The past decade has witnessed a rebirth in interest in this group's language, history and culture.

Speakers at the symposium will include various authorities on the Czech Moravian people of Texas, a group which numbers today in the hundreds of thousands.

The symposium will open on Friday, October 3rd at 3 p.m. at SPJST Lodge 84, 2625 Floyd Street in Dallas. A social will follow the conclusion of the presentations at 6 p.m. Registration on Saturday, October 4th begins at 9 a.m. at SP JST Lodge 84. The program on Saturday begins at 10 a.m. and will last through 3 p.m. A nominal admission fee will be requested. The general public is encouraged to attend.

The presentations will address different areas of history, culture and genealogical research relating to the Czechs of Texas. Special attention will be devoted to those Texans of Czech ancestry who have made outstanding contributions to the state. A question and - answer forum will follow the presentations. Various speakers will have their books and other materials available for purchase.

Upcoming District II Camp Camp will start this Friday morning, July 25th at 10:30 a.m. for the Junior group and they will stay until Monday morning at about 10:30 a.m., and the Teens will arrive at the same time on July 28th at 10:30 a.m. and will leave on July 31st at about 10:30 a.m.

We hope to have a good turnout.

Many plans for a good camp have been planned.

Last minute addition-- Please bring an empty liquid soap detergent bottle if possible; it is not mandatory. If any of you have more than one bring it for your friend. It can be the squirt pump style or the pull - up lid squirt bottle.

Dear Readers, We were very successful at YAD. Four of our members received first place honors. They were Kevin Dobecka, Shirley Dobecka, Keith Hykel and Lanette Hykel. Dear Readers, The July 9, 1986 meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Christy Marek, club president.

Kenneth Jeske and Carl Macek led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

The roll was called. Present were 27 members, 1 visitor, Chad Bruggman and 2 adults, Jane Bruggman and • Nancy Posvar.

The minutes were read and approved. Janet Macek gave the treasurer's report and our current balance is $749.24.

Under old business our youth leader reminded us of our dues for the following year. These dues need to be turned in to our Assistant Youth Leader Pauline Marek.

A discussion was held concerning the upcoming camp dates. We will be having several Juniors as well as Teens attending camp this year.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The members of Lodge 30 attended the District VI tour on June 25th.

Everyone met in Wal - Mart parking lot at 6 a.m. Our first stop was at The Blue Bell Creamery in Brenham. We toured the factory and had a sample of their ice cream.

We then stopped for a park lunch in Temple. After we finished eating, we toured the SPJST Museum. We also viewed an interesting film on the history of Czech and the SPJST. Afterward we headed toward Austin for a tour of the Inner Space Caverns.

After a full day of seeing many interesting things, we stopped for a bite in Bastrop and then headed home.

I would like to thank the SPJST for providing the tour and also Mrs. Marek and Mrs. Roye for arranging it.

Lodge 30, Taiton YC Holds Meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held its monthly meeting on July 6th at the Taiton Community Center.

Our meeting was called to order by President Marcy Dorotik. The pledge was led by Jeanine Dorotik and Jennifer Dluhos said a prayer.

Poems were read by Jean and Marcy Dorotik and Lenice Kaspar.

On July 14th, we had a swimming party at Playdium Pool in West; after the swimming, we had watermelon and all of us enjoyed it very;much.

We had 16 youth members present with one visitor. There were also 8 adults who enjoyed watching, swimming and eating watermelon.

We were very happy to have 2 of our ex - youth club members swimming with us. They were Janice Stanislav and Karen Shelton.

Our next fun -time will be camp and I am looking forward to seeing you all at Camp Val Verde.

Campo-Hillje YC Holds Meeting

Dear Vestnik Readers, The SPJST El Campo - Hillje Lodge No. 40 Youth Club held its monthly meeting on July 3rd at 7 p.m. in the Commercial State Bank Gold Room.

There were eight members and six adults present.

We discussed the Educational Tour, YAD, YAD cards, Family Night and our next meeting. YAD cards were also collected.

We honored Michael Marek as our July birthday celebrant. He was serenaded by the club members who sang "Happy Birthday."

Later we rehearsed a skit and had refreshments. These goodies were served by Mrs. Janet Marek.

Our next meeting will be a hot dog supper and swimming party. It is scheduled for August 7th at 6:30 p.m. in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Holub.

Dear Vestnik Readers, June 8th, three youth members, our youth leader and her husband went to Temple to work at the Fraternal Day Festival. We really enjoyed all the entertainment at the festival.

We had a swimming - hamburger supper at the Landa Park Estates Island on June 16th. Everyone`enjoyed the cold water and stuffed themselves on hamburgers and goodies.

June 19th, we had a supper for all adult members of the club at the Cibolo Park. We prepared fried chicken and all the trimmings. We also had election of officers and discussed YAD projects and contributions for our Polka Festival on July 27th.

Three youth members and our youth leader and her husband went to the HEB Camp in Leakey, Texas.

Everyone had a good time with all the activities and good food.

Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 20 in Granger, Texas wish to express our sympathy, on behalf of our entire membership, to the family of MRS. MILLIE MACHU, who passed away on June 1, 1986, at John's Community Hospital in Taylor, Texas.

Sister Machu was born on January 26, 1901 in Ellinger, Texas where she lived until her marriage to Anton Machu in 1921. After their marriage, they made their home in Granger.

She was a very faithful member of the Granger Brethren Church and the Granger Brethren Christian Sisters.

She was a member of the SPJST Lodge 20 in Granger.

Survivors include her husband, Anton Machu of Granger; one daughter, Sadie Blaha of Taylor; one son, Darwin Machu of Austin; 2 granddaughters, 2 grandsons, and 3 great - grandchildren.

Services were held June 3rd in the Granger Brethren Church with Rev. Gordon Ha, of Granger and Rev. Dan

Marek of Caldwell officiating.

Interment was in the Machu Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Larry Raesz, Daniel Blaha, Jr., Greg Machu, Bobby Roten, Albin Machu and Johnny Machu.

Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 33, Bleiblerville, Texas in behalf of our officers and entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother EDMUND MIKESKA, who passed away at his home at Bleiblerville on June 23, 1986, at the age of 70 years.

Brother Mikeska was born in Bleiblerville 31 March 1916, the son of Thomas and Anna (Siptak) Mikeska.

He was reared in Bleiblerville and attended the Victoria School. He was engaged in farming and ranching and for the past 12 years he was employed with Schovajsa Catering. His family was of utmost importance and he also enjoyed the simple things in life.

He was a faithful member of the Nelsonville Brethren Church and the SPJST Lodge 33 of Bleiblerville. He was also willing to work for the lodge when called upon.

On November 18, 1937 he was married to Lillie Dierking in ceremonies performed in New Wehdem.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, 3 brothers and 2 grandchildren.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Lillie Mikeska of Bleiblerville; daughter and son - in - law, Betty and Paul Folsom of Brenham; son and daughter - in - law, Donald, and Gloria Mikeska of Trinity; sisters, Frances Taska of Blessing and Lillie Schultz of Houston; brothers, Joe Mikeska of Beliville and Ladgie Mikeska of Houston; grandchildren, Paula Page, Stephen Folsom, Donald Mikeska, Jr. great Mikeska; Lori and grandchildren, Megan Page, Carey Page and Brent Folsom.

Funeral services were held from the Nelsonville Brethren Church at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25th with the Rev. Albert Michalik officiating.

Burial was in the National Cemetery near Nelsonville.

Pallbearers were Dalton Mikeska, Kirby Mikeska, Leonard Mikeska, Elden Mikeska, Tommie Richter and Daniel Dierking.

Funeral services were under, the direction of the Pete E. Ettinger Funeral Home of Bellville.
